Google Chrome gets Master Password protection

Question: Google Chrome gets Master Password protection

Google Chrome, just like any other modern web browser, offers to store passwords that you enter while using it to improve future access to websites or services on the Internet.

Instead of having to enter the username and password manually each time you delete cookies or sign out, you can use features provided by the browser to fill out the values automatically for you.

That's very comfortable and used by many, especially since it is a feature that is set to on by default.

Unlike Firefox, Chrome did not offer any protection whatsoever for stored usernames and passwords in the browser. Some users saw this as a blatant security risks, while others and Google were quick to point out that local system access was needed to access the data.

There are obviously situations where you may allow someone to access your computer, be it child, friend or business colleague. The chance that they may access the storage may be slim, especially if you are nearby, but it is definitely possible that someone with enough knowledge of Chrome would quickly use an opportunity to look up passwords in the browser.Click to expand...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Norton Utilities...I didn't even know that was still being sold to anyone.  In any case, I suggest that you uninstall it immediately.  Unless major improvements have been made, it will create problems, rather than solve problems on your system.

Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.Click to expand...

The ability of Google Chrome to block secure website connections compromised by the Heartbleed bug is "completely broken" because the browser detects less than three percent of the underlying digital certificates that have been revoked, according to a detailed analysis recently posted online.

Hello,
Chrome browser stores my passwords in the "Password manager". However, some sites ask me annually or half-annually to change the password. But it is not replaced in the "Password Manager", it keeps the old password, and when I try to open that site, the old password is embedded, have to change it manually. Chrome does not open a pop-up window asking if to save the password, as it has one saved.
In the "Password Manager" cannot do any editing.
Answers will be appreciated.
Thanks
Motim

Answer:Password Manager in Google Chrome

I believe you must delete the saved password and then chrome should ask to save the new password the next time you log in.

Or set chrome to never save passwords and use a better password manager like LastPass.

** Password Alert requires that passwords have at least eight characters.

Password Alert helps protect against phishing attacks.
If you enter your Gmail or Google for Work password into anywhere other than accounts.google.com, you?ll receive an alert, so you can change your password if needed.

Password Alert also tries to detect fake Google sign-in pages to alert you before you?ve typed in your password. To do so, Password Alert checks the HTML of each page you visit to see if it?s impersonating a Google sign-in page.

Hi

I frequently use i a website called https://www.lectio.dk/lectio/133/forside.aspx. It is a website where i can see what lessons i have the next 2 days and see my homework and such. To get acces to the information i need a login, which i easily can remember. The problem is that i would prefer just to be able to click login when i come to the website, but it does not ask to save username and password

I have checked if the website is listed in the "never save"-list in options, and it is not there. I have never been asked to save the username and password.

PS. the website is in Danish.

Answer:Google Chrome not asking to save password

Go to the "Customize and Control Google Chrome" button, which looks like a wrench (on the right hand side of the window)> Options > on the left hand side click on Personal Stuff and click on offer to save Password. Let me know if this helps :)

I use Windows 7 Home (64 bit). When I first started using Google Chrome and I logged on to various sites a question would pop up at the top of the page asking me if I wanted to save this log in. I normally clicked yes.
This question has stopped appearing and only some of the web sites auto log in.
Can anyone please tell me how to get this facility back.
Thank you.

My computer was running slow so I went to my task manager and seen a whole bunch of Google Chrome processes running. I was confused at first because I don't even have Google Chrome installed. As I tried to stop the processes one at a time, more only popped up. Then I looked it up on the net, found others yall have helped on this site, and know there's something wrong. If possible, would like to know how and when the malware was installed as I have multiple students that use the pc and this is the first time ever had this happen, would like to know if it was a user doing something wrong by accident or on purpose (is even possible to know, but mainly would like to just get pc fixed!)

I right clicked and Disabled Antivirus AutoDetect (Norton); Downloaded zoek and have result log attached. Required a pc reboot and did that too. Problem is still happening. It also changed my home page to google.com (I changed it back). I also uploaded a picture of my task manager if that helps any.

Thanks!!!

Hello,

I'm trying to repair my parents computer. They were getting Trojan horse warning messages and crashing to blue screens. So far I have updated the BIOS and uninstalled all the browser addons and questionable apps I found on there PC. Since updating the BIOS it hasn't crashed to blue screen. However I'm getting a lot of lywqyjla.exe processes that say they belong to Google Chrome. I uninstalled Google Chrome and they are still there. Each of them is using varying amounts of memory and the CPU usage keeps spiking. I have run malware bytes and adw cleaner, each of them said they found and removed threats but these processes keep showing up.

I've tried multiple anti-everything programs from Super Anti-Spyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, Spybot S&D, and various online scans that have found nothing, or found something but never fully cleaned my system. For a week or two, Google was being redirected to various ad sites, but after my system was "cleaned" everything was fine. Now today, anything remotely related to Google won't load at all. I've tried to manually remove the TDSS google-redirecting virus, but I have none of the files that supposedly come along with the virus.

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, but I have a problem with my internal hard drive. I have set a master HDD password and user HDD password using the BIOS. Some time later I have discovered that I must have typed the master HDD one wrong twice in a row on the confirmation, as it is coming up incorrect when I try to remove it! I can still access the disk using the 'user HDD' password as long as it is inside the laptop, but because a master HDD one is set, I cannot remove the locks. This means I cannot take my drive out and put it in an USB caddy or access it from another PC or laptop. I have backed up everything that is on it, so data loss is not a concern, but is there any way to remove the master password if you know the user password? I don't want to use this disk in my laptop and then my laptop break down on me, as the hard drive is basically locked to this laptop unless I find a way to get rid of the master password- this WOULD mean data loss in the future to come if the laptop died!
The disk is a TOSHIBA MK1059GSM with firmware 50IDF3DMS (I won't post the serial number). I would just buy a new disk but as it is a 1000GB one, and they are expensive, I would rather find a way to fix the disk password than spend money a whole new drive. Like I said, data loss is not a concern, I just want to return it to a fully usable-state!
If anyone knows of a solution, please let me know!

Answer:qosmio x300 15T hard disk master password wrong, but know the user password

I've somehow figured a way. Deliberately getting the user password wrong, booting from a spare windows disk I had, and then using Hard Disk Wipe Tool to do a low level format seems to have wiped the master password. I was then able to turn off the user password by setting it to blank. Problem solved! I could only do this because this laptop has slots for two hard drives.

An install of Google Crhome browser is apparantly recording cookies while the Google Chrome browser itself is not being used;  the cookies seem to be of webpages and sites that other people in this location visit through another browser.  This makes me thing that the Google Chrome browser sneaks information from the user of other browsers on the computer, and this makes me wonder, what more is being done with this set of cookies lifted from the other browser?

This cannot be normal; is it?

Every day, I come to the particular computer with google chrome on it, open history, see the cookies listed, delete them, and only use the browser in Incognito mode.  No cookies recorded during any of my usage sessions.  Later, after other people who never use Chrome use the computer, go online (with Internet Explorer), makes their website visits, and then finish; when I come back to use the computer again and go online in incognito mode on Chrome, ... there again are more cookies listed, and mostly from sites that I did not visit.

This just seems like it should not be happening.  Tell me about it?

Did it always do this? I really can't remember and would hate to think I've been hacked and am about to hand all my logins to someone!

Does anybody here know how to reset the password from the master.psafe3 file?

I know it's an open source software, there should have a way to recover the password for this software.

Protect Forever Password (PFP)
Try our password protection software that allows you to hide your passwords against hackers !
How it works?
This software has a local database for any computers that is installed.
The password generated or defined by the user is encrypted in this database and this un-encrypted when the user want this password.
The user create the password [Create table in the local database]
The password is then encrypted in real-time with a new encryption method created in real-time for this password.

Soo :

Password ---> Stored as (ex) Md54%µ?9fp£dmz?d^¨$~#dFpQ#@2$Q*Z&*DmqO)"édmAo (for 8 length password is about like 200 length in store (encrypted))
When the user want this password for exemple, to connect to facebook :

The software decrypt this password. Not so easy. The software decrypt 50 fakes passwords in same times. So the hackers can't see where the real password is, because the encryption is not at 1 time but in 5 + 2-perchar

Soo, there is it that the hacker can see :

I want to get rid of a pass. For long time, I thought it is the supervisor pwd but now after being able to disable it, I am sure it is not supervisor pwd.It should be another pwd and I am not sure what it is. It shows up after power on and its icon is like a cylinder with number one on top of it and a lock on the right. I don't think it is Power On Password (POP) as POP has a key in BIOS and its icon is like two squares inside each other. Maybe it is Master Password. Do we have such a thing in Lenovo T60 and if yes, is there a way to remove it?

Answer:How to remove Master password? (I know the password)

You can disable any of the passwords in the bios "security" section. It will ask you to enter current password, then new password. Leave the "new" password field blank and your computer won't have any.

Hi,I am using the Lenovo Thinkpad T420 with password, and considering switching to the fingerprint protection. My question is: Does fingerprint protection provide superior protection to password protection or is it mainly a question of ease of use?If my computer is password protected, does that only make it harder for a thief to access my data, or does it also prevent him from formatting the computer, and reinstalling an OS? (afterwards he can use the computer as regularly). And what if it is password protected? Does that only protect my data, or also prevents a thief from ever using the computer again in a better way than password protection? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Fingerprint protection vs. password protection

Superior protection. Knowone can copy and/or see your password. Once logged on its all the same asuming you are accessing the same user rights (administrator/user) for either method. Its easy as well. But on that note. Why did the T520 note come with the figureprint reader. I assumed it was there from the security bragging on the website. But nope, notebook came without it. Son of a b....and no way to add it now.

Hi Guys,

This is a curious one.

I have three PCs (two desktop and one laptop) all running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (1607).

Each system has a shared partition, set up exactly the same, which has sharing set for 'everyone', with 'full control'.

Password protected sharing is turned off on each system (in "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings").

Each of the desktop systems can access each other's shared and also the laptop's shared partition.

The problem is when I try to use the laptop to access the shares on either of the desktop systems, I get a pop-up requester asking for a username and password. (see below - the laptop is "T400" and one of the desktops is "A960").

Any idea why this would be happening? I've checked the settings on all systems (sharing and network) and can see not reason for the password prompt appearing.

Previously I was running Win 10 Pro 64-bit (1511) on all three systems and never encountered this error.

Cheers,

Mike.

Chrome OS is not taking off as Google might have wanted, but the company is not slowing down on development. To get more people to get into the world of Chrome OS, Google has come up with a rather impressive plan. Apparently, the search giant is working on a version of the Chrome web browser that replicates functions of Chrome OS right inside Windows 8.

According to The Verge, the latest developer version of Chrome browser for Windows 8 can be configured to run in Metro (Modern UI). However, the browser is suffering from several bugs so Metro mode doesn?t perform well enough and there are frequent crashes. More important than that, however, is that this new version of Chrome browser brings to the table Chrome OS design, Chrome app launcher, Google app menu bar and support for windows within windows. In other words, the stepping stones for Chrome OS in Windows 8, and a major coup by Google.

Is there a way in windows that i can lock my computer, and no one can do anything without a password? Or is the only way to sign out and password protect my account? I'd like something i can just flick on when i leave the room for a few min, instead of exiting windows. People in my house are snooping around my computer when im gone, and i want my privacy.

Answer:Master Password?

What about the built-in lock computer option? Or is this something that is only available to domain users on XP Pro? I havent messed around with home versions or non-domain PC's very much.

I have tried to run Malwarebytes and Malwarebytes anti-root, MacAfee root kit, and several others. Anything I try to open, never actually opens. I am an administrator on this computer, but when I attempt to download anything now from Internet Explorer, I get a Security Alert " Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." I reset IE and it allows me to download the programs, but I still can’t run them. Hope this helps! Seems like I have a full blown infestation. L

As noted above, I'm currently having problems with a process that is being detected as Gooogle Chrome taking up most of the resources on my system. This, even though I don't have Chrome installed on my computer. I've tried deleting the file, but it just pops up somewhere else.

I ran FRST and have attached the resulting reports to this thread. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The local senior center recently dismissed an employee who had password protected a folder on the senior center's PC. The new person needs files in that folder, but the former employee is disgruntled and won't give the password. My question: Is there a way to remove password protection from the folder without having the password? I am trying to help them. The person originally used the Windows XP password protection capability to password protect the folder. Thanks for any help,Mike

Answer:removing folder password protection without password

QuoteWindows XP password protection capability to password protect the folder.Windows XP doesn't have built in ability to password protect a folder- the closest thing would be using Encryption, in which case the files are unreadable without the proper user credentials (which would require the user password).

Whenever I open Google Chrome the first time after I finish booting my computer, it hangs for three seconds, during that time I see a wild amount of solid flashing on my hard-drive light indicator.

Upon looking on my task manager, I see 4 Chrome processes running, one of which seems to be causing a'lot of activity on one of the hard-drives. After a said few seconds the process disappears leaving only three processes and no hard-drive activity.

Is there anyway of stopping this kind of strange hard-drive activity when 'm opening chrome? I'm afraid the repeat thrashing might cause my hard-drive to wear out prematurely.

If anyone can help, please respond.

Thank you in advance.

My computer is running Windows 7.

About a week ago, I started getting messages saying "Google Chrome has crashed" when Google Chrome was not open. When I opened task manager, many Google Chrome processes under the same name were running. To try to fix the problem, I uninstalled Google Chrome, but the processes are still running.

Right now there are about 15 processes named "dlxyoesklw.exe *32" with the description "Google Chrome" in the task manager. The number of running processes changed frequently, and there are sometimes more than 30 running, all using various amounts of memory. When I press "End Process," more processes just appear.

If I press "Open File Location," it now takes me to C:\Users\Owner\AppData\LocalLow\EmieBrowserModeList\igsqvescqy\mwqvrxfk
If I try to delete the .exe file, it says "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Google Chrome. Close the file and try again" but of course Google Chrome is uninstalled.

Twice I have tried to delete the whole folder by restarting the computer and quickly deleting it before the processes launched. This did not work, as the processes still appeared after the file was deleted, and the folder relocated to a new one under \AppData\LocalLow\
The folder used to be in \AppData\LocalLow\EmieSiteList\ before it relocated.

I have G Data TotalSecurity 2014 installed but it did not find anything.

This behavior is very suspicious. What should I... Read more

Computer crashes on startup fairly often - I've always thought it was due to running 4 monitors but it is getting more regular. Checked Task Manager this morning and found 11 instances of Google Chrome running before I even opened the browser.
After googling and reading several threads it appears there is some sort of mutating virus on my system. It does not appear that there is a standard anti-virus fix (yet) and I'm fairly basic in my computer tech skills. I got directed to this site from a few others hence I'm here seeking some help.

I've followed the 3 steps and uploaded the 2 files as directed

Anyone upgrading to the new Chrome stable build 42.0.2311.90 and would like to revert back to the standard Bookmark Manager, here is how....

Type about:flags in search bar, press enter.

Disable flag:

Enable Enhanced BookmarksMac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, AndroidProvides an off switch for enhanced bookmarks experiment #enhanced-bookmarks-experiment
DefaultEnabledDisabled

Relaunch Chrome (button on bottom).

--------------------------------------------------------------

The new bookmark manager does not allow choice of where to place new bookmarks, it is auto based on content and tags of site. Also, default is to show "Tiles" when bookmark manager is opened.

Done!

For the past few days when I open up Google Chrome I get a white page with a yellow ribbon at the top that says "Chrome didn't shut down correctly" and then an option to "restore" which only brings me to a new tab page.
I have looked for solutions and have tried going into appdata and changing my "Default" folder into "Default_old" then closing down Chrome and opening it again but that doesn't work (and I don't get another "Default" folder as the instructions says I should). I have tried disabling my extensions (of which pretty much all of them are ad blockers) and apps. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome but so far nothing has worked. Am I just not doing these things correctly? Is there another way I can stop this? Because I would really love to open up Chrome and have my homepages there.

Thanks!

We're good! Looks like it had something to do with my ad blocker extensions!

First I would like to apologize if this is a repeated question as I am new here and am still learning my way around the site. My question is...This is a family computer so my kids are aloud on when a parent is home which isnt always the case. I would like to know if there is a program that requires a master password entered before the user accounts come up for the user to log into Windows? Any help or direction will greatly be appreciated. Running just your basic store bought pc windows 7 ultimate 32bit. Thanks!

You can try and set a BIOS password. The steps will be different for your computer, but you can start here http://www.lockdown.co.uk/?pg=biospsw

If AVG made you set the Master Password it would be a protected file. Is there an option for you to select that says "Forgot Password" or "Password hint"

Firefox master and Pale Moon password in the one user profile will not work.

I have Firefox 2.x and a FirefoxPortable 14.x
Then Pale moon 3.x and Pale moon Portable 3.x

When the Master password box pops up I can not type anything in them at all. I can see the cursor on the left but typing does not show anything or does typing the password do anything.

What is going on that effects all 4 of these?

All was OK last night and I am only person in the computer.
I rebooted to see if it would clear things and will again shut down.

If it's just some file or files in each profile I do in the Pale moon have the same in the user and admin account so can copy over. Will almost the same or the passwords should be the same.
The signons.sqlite is 96 KB and both have the same date so are the very same.

It's just the rights getting to them does not work in the limited user account I use all the time for some crazy reason

I can't believe I've been so stupid.I have just paid the full whack for Roboform Pro and in my haste to fill in the siging up process I have forgotten my Master Password and was daft enough not to write it down. Roboform have told me that it is impossible to retrieve it again (rightly so) but I just wondered if I downloaded it again would this make a difference and re-entered my Order code? Or perhaps download the free version and then upgrade using the same order code? Has anyone else made this mistake and can offer a way out of this mess?I would be pleased to hear from them if so. I really do want Roboform, not Access Manager or Google toolbar or others.Regards cowgirl66

Answer:Roboform Master Password

Download/install PC Wizard 2008, then click on the Configuration tab in the left-hand column, then click on the Keys icon - you might be lucky and find your Password.

I am assuming this is a BIOS password. I highly doubt that a master password exists and if it did it would be a closely guarded secret. You will have to contact HP and be prepared to prove you are the original owner.

Hi Guys

Hadn't used my laptop for a few monthes, last night I cranked it up to help someone who had Vista on their computer. Was using Firefox, and it asked me for the Master Password. I don't remember setting one in the first place, and all the ones I normally use didn't work. So I figured I would have to uninstall/re-install Firefox to start all over.

Well, evidently even though you uninstall Firefox it keeps all the user info, as even the add-ons were still there in the new install as well as whatever master password I must have put on. Is there any way to delete all the passwords and start over? I've been searching around, and there is a way to do it with Thunderbird. But so far no luck with Firefox.

Not sure if this can be answered or not, as it may be against forum rules. But sure hope not, don't want to have to use IE.

Lymponus

Answer:Firefox Master Password

After removing Firefox, try deleting the profile folder then re-install and see if it still wants a master password.

Basically, we want to set a master password to prevent having to replace HD's if users begin to add hard drive passwords on their own, or done maliciously.  Ideally, we would like to find out how we can apply a master hard drive password (without locking the hard drive) that will get us past the problem because the master password will allow us to remove any password applied by the user. Thanks in advance folks,Pierson

Hi there,I am implementing where I work both BIOS Password for Power On and would also like to implement HDD Password User / Manager. BUT there is no documentation on what to expect if your passwords are entered wrong, pitfuls , etc. I setup the Power On Password User ans Supervisor, turned off my machines , turned on and typed password woring three times. All ok, just turn off , turn back on again and try again... good test. BUT, I am a bit scared to do it with the HDD. I can set it up and works fine, but I just know, there will be one user that stuffs it, and may wreck there HDD Password by typing it wrong three times.  - Whats Happend Next- How to recover (I created a CD with  rescue and recover, will this help ??- Will it lock the HDD and ask for the master password over and over ??- Will it erase or lock the HDD , with no option to type in the Master Pwrd ?? I dont have any spare laptops with no info on them, therefore, I was going to use mine. But without know what will happen when I type in the HDD password 3 times wroing, then I am a bit worried.... CheersLuis

Hi! in the company I work for, we would like to implement hdd password protection. setting user and master and giving the user to the end user. according to the documentation, this would leave us with the master pw which can be used to gain access to the system. however, in reality (tested with many thinkpads) when booting, the notebook requests the hdd pasword (which it should) but only accepts the user password and not the master. without entering the user pw there is no way to get to the bios and remove the user password with the master. this totally contradicts the documentation here:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=migr-59377 Is this a bug, or we are doing something wrong. I have  checked under linux, the hdd is in high security mode, so maximum security is not enabled. any suggestions? regardseliott
