Chrome caching to smooth out rough patches in network

Question: Chrome caching to smooth out rough patches in network

CNET said:

Google is working on software that will improve Chrome during moments when people lose their network connection by letting the browser load its own stored copy of previously visited Web pages.

Google programmer Randy Smith said yesterday he's added support for "offline cache mode" to Chrome. It's only on the developer version of the browser so far, and it's disabled by default, but the flag to enable it says the feature will let Chrome load Web pages from the browser's local cache if the online version isn't available. That could help when reloading pages or restarting the browser with no network.

If you're interested in the feature and have the Chrome Canary or developer versions -- neither as well tested as Chrome beta or stable, of course -- here are CNET's instructions on how to enable offline cache mode.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Quote:
Google Inc. patched three vulnerabilities in the Windows version of Chrome earlier this week, marking the second time that it has plugged security holes in the browser this month.

Tuesday's update to Chrome 4.1.249.1064 fixed three flaws rated "high," the second-most-severe threat ranking in Google's four-step system. Danish vulnerability tracker Secunia rated the update as "highly critical" under its own severity ranking.

As is Google's practice, technical details of the vulnerabilities were hidden from public view, a tactic the company uses to prevent attackers from accessing the information until the majority of users have updated to the new version.

Researchers credited with reporting two of the flaws were awarded bonuses as part of Google's bug bounty program, which kicked off in January. Most flaws earn their finders $500, but researcher Jordi Chancel was handed $1,000 for the cross-origin bypass vulnerability he found in Chrome's handling of Google URL, a code library used to parse large numbers of Web addresses.

Google patches severe Chrome vulnerabilities.

Google has fixed two high-severity vulnerabilities in the stable version of its Chrome browser that could have let an attacker remotely take over a person's computer.

With one attack on Google's V8 JavaScript engine, malicious JavaScript on a Web site could let an attacker gain access to sensitive data or run arbitrary code on the computer within a Chrome protected area called the sandbox, Google said in a blog post Tuesday. With the other, a page with XML-encoded information could cause a browser tab crash that could let an attacker run arbitrary code within the sandbox.Click to expand...

Google said on Thursday that it patched ten security holes in its Chrome Web browser. The company also paid out more than $10,000 in bounties to security researchers who reported the holes.threatpostOkay $ for chrome, nice read. EnjoyKarsten

Answer:Google patches 10 Chrome holes, pays $10k in bounties

Yeah I heard about the Google handing out rewards for security researcher that found exploits. Which is By the way a great//brilliant Idea! It adds a bit of comfort to know that google is helping out researchers at the same time they are fixing their browser. I still don't like/use chrome as it doesn't run on mac os x 10.5.8 while running on a PowerPC processor. But I have used it on windows and just don't like it for some reason.

Question: Network Caching

Goals:

We only have a 1.5mbit connection, but it's guaranteed so I'd like to do some caching during the night when we're asleep to the common sites we visit/etc, and I'd also like the cache to work with windows updates, steam and origin games/patches if possible.

Semi-Plan

Since we only have 1.5mbit I'm hoping to run this on an ATOM or Intel low-low power CPU with 1 SSD to start, and then monitor writes/reads and possibly upgrade to RAID10 of S3500 drives.(Currently have ATOM with Linux already in ITX setup I could use)

I don't need this to do anything but act as a caching appliance.

We have cisco/zyxel router/firewall setup, so don't need any more duties like that.

Linux+Squid and then write a script to hit a url list I specify in the night to prime the cache?

Todd

Answer:Network Caching

I think you're going to find it hard to predicatively cache, but you'll likely be able to cache windows updates (which hopefully download at night anyway). A lot of sites will be serving cache-control headers to block caching, but hopefully you'll be able to cache css and javascript at least. (You can tell squid to ignore the rules, and cache anyway, but it's got a good chance of breaking login state or sharing information that shouldn't be shared, etc)

I wouldn't do raid 10 for cache storage either; you don't need redundancy, because the information is replaceable, and you don't need block level striping, you can tell squid to use multiple directories for storage, and it'll stripe more or less among them.

I recently joined the WHS crew and got an HP MediaSmart Server. I migrated all 1.7TB of my data off of my desktop to that machine and I love it.

However, I am having an issue with data availability. Every now and then, I lose access to my data because the WHS rebooted from Windows Updates, or a piece of software updated, or the switch gets unplugged, or something else 'minor'. During this time, my data is completely unavailable, and since 95% of the time the WHS is in use, it is massively inconvenient to have it drop out, especially without warning.

I tried experimenting with Offline Files to get it to cache files to minimize this effect, but it took forever to 'sync', never finished, and it cached a bunch of not-frequently-accessed files I didnt care about. I cannot cache 1.7TB locally, and dont want to cache items that are not 'frequently accessed'.

Is there a way, using Offline Files or something better, to have a set of network locations cached such that only the files that I have previously accessed are cached?

-Cool-

Answer:Caching a Network Drive

offline file synchronization only works with synching a folder, not recently-accessed files.

As far as I know.

What I am wanting to accomplish is adding all my network printers to a .txt file and have a bat file the checks for them and readds them if they are not present.

I guess it'd be pseudo roaming profiles. The issue I am running into is I'd like users to have all their network printers, regardless of what machine they log onto the network.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trying to find out if it's possible to cache group policy settings on a domain.

Reason I ask, and why I'm trying to find out, is this: We have several remote sites that have distugstingly slow network connections (think multiple comptuers, and a 56k link). It's bad enough, that the computers time out contacting DHCP (I wish I had control over where DHCP servers were... ugh).
When/if the comptuers are rebooted, it takes about 5 minutes to "apply settings" before it finally gets to the logon screen, and then another 5+ minutes to apply user GP settings, before the desktop is loaded up.

I've done some searching, and it looks like it's not possible, but just wanted to make sure since most of what I found was in regards to Win2k Server, and we're running a Win2k3 AD network.

Answer:M$ AD Network: Caching Group Policy?

Off the top of my head I think there's some policies for slow link detection and background processing of GPOs?

I was playing GTA 3 without any problems on my old system, then a got a new one and well the game goes smooth, then its jerky and then all of a sudden its smooth again.
I use the games capability to play MP3's during game play that my old system never had a problem with, but with the current one sometime the audio (even the games built-in ones) goes a bit funny and skips like a scratched CD. (the actual CD is fine)
My old system was:

AMD K6-2 500MHz CPU
384MB-RAM (PC133)
Gigabyte GA-5AX Motherboard
nVidia Geforce 2 MX 400 Video
Creative "Something" PCI sound
Windows XP Home

My current system is:

AMD Duron 1.3GHz
256MB-RAM (DDR 2700)
MSI KT3 Ultra2 Motherboard
nVidia Geforce 2 MX 400 (the same card)
on board 6 channel surround sound (all but the front channels are disabled)
Windows XP Home

On both systems I am running GTA at: 640x480 32bit as thats all the old system could handle. I assume the new one should be able to cope with a lot better, but it doesn't.
Of course on the new system everything is cleanly installed, so I don't know where GTA is getting this problem from.

Answer:GTA3 Smooth, Jerky, Smooth....

Try running the game off a disk image using a virtual CD-drive. such as

http://www.daemon-tools.com/

see if this helps..

Also, you could download the cache tweaks from

http://www.startdisk.com/Web1/ubd/ubd.htm

left side of page, scroll down to tweaks link. Also, check what's running in the background. Any memory managers like cacheman or memturbo set to automatically recover memory will do this.

I swear I remember reading somewhere that there is a way to set up XP laptops so they are checked and verified that they have all the latest windows updates, security patches, virus definitions and even a full virus scan prior to allowing them to connect to your network. Does anyone know anything about this?? Also, is this only for remote connections or is there a way to set this up so when a client brings their laptop into work from home, these things can be verified before allowing them access to our LAN?

Thanks!!!

Always a good idea. Set it up so it can access only the internet and not be a part of the LAN. Just put your internet gateway address and DNS addresses in the IP settings and run Windoze update. You can also download all of the security updates for XP manually or order a SP update CD directly from MS.

This is from one of my kid's computers.
He had lots of people through the house and was letting them on the computer.

Redirects out the wazoo.
I got rid of the Smitfraud and most of the Veramonde, (spelling?)but not all.
There are still weird things happening as well.
In fact, when I check internet settings, there's a message at the bottom saying that only the administrator can change some of those settings.
He IS the administrator.

I'm not at his house..mainly because I can't get to this site from there before being redirected to hotdate.com or some such.

I'd wager there was a pornfest goin on there and lots of goodies came in with the garbage.

I was able to run spybot and found Zango, and Veramonde, as well as a few others which are somewhat insideous and can't really be gotten rid of.

Here's the latest HJT log.

*Rant Mode ON*

Well, I ordered my new Alienware on 3/16 and it's been stalled in 'Phase 4' for about three days now. Looks like there is NO WAY it's gonna be shipped out on the date they gave me of the 29th. They wasted NO time in charging my credit card though. Also, in the short time I have done buisiness with Alienware they have managed to 'Overcharge' me by $500 and cause turmoil with my checking accout. The line is getting thin, but I have faith. I hope for thier sake (and mine of course) that they pull it through.

*Rant Mode OFF*

Answer:Off to a rough start.

LOL, sorry about all that man. Alienware's service seems to have taken a plunge recently...

Also, what is Phase 4? Is phase 4 the part when the burn the comp (i.e. plug it in and run it to make sure it works right), cuz a lot of companies do that for several days.

Hi, I have Vista x64 on my T400. I've installed the UltraNav trackpad driver properly and enabled virtual scrolling. However the actual virtual scrolling experience is very frustrating. It's anything but smooth. It works 3/10 tries for me and that too it's very jumpy. I tried change scrolling speed but it doesn't help. I had owned Dell inspirons in the past and I had very smooth virtual scrolling experience. Is there anything I can do in this case?

Answer:Virtual Scrolling is very rough

I'm having the same problem with a new T500 - even with 'smooth scrolling' enabled in Firefox, it's jumpy and somewhat unpredictable.    I noticed that nobody has replied to this post, so I thought it worth reviving in the hope that somebody will have an answer.

I bought a 25 dollar rosewill full atx case from newegg about a year and a half ago that came with a 350W atx psu. Somehow it ran for 1 year running a full atx pentium 3 mobo with 3 hd's and a combo drive, lan card, modem, video card, and a fan. Then it ran for about 2 months on my micro atx mobo with a amd athlon 64 3200+, 4 80mm fans, 1 120mm fan, 2 hd's, combo drive, modem, and a nvidia 8600GT. Somehow it ran all that time with no problems ever. So i went with a new Rosewill Stallion 500w psu, and it hasen't given me a problem yet.

Answer:Rosewill - diamond in the rough?

I've heard very mixed things about Rosewill. I personally own a 17" Rosewill LCD (now a backup monitor since I have a Samsung 226bw) which I've had since about 2005-2006 I think. Never had any issue, worked wonderfully and still does. I also am using one of their PSU's on my current rig, so far so good - been running 4 months with the PC on for days at a time.

Hi everyone so I've been running a T1100 AMD CPU for a while and I hate it, it's done well but in the last few months the whole system has gone to pot so I figured I'd make the move back to intel.
Now I was planing on getting a single GTX690 but then for the same money/slightly less money I can get crossfired HD7970's 6000MHz.
So this was my planned setup and it hit's the mark all par the OS but I can't get an OEM copy of windows 7 so I might have to move over to 8 for £60...

Intel i7 3770K 3rd gen
Asus P8Z77
2x Gigabyte HD7970 3GBGDDR5
Coolermaster HAF XM with GX lite 700watt PSU
8GB Corsair Dominator RAM 2666MHz
internal Blu-ray drive
Segate 750GB hybrid SSD plus an extra 1TB drive for Steam games
Windows 8 64Bit

So what does everyone think? I'll be running on a 32" 1080p Samsung LED TV.

Answer:£1500 rough budget for new PC

I would get rid of the 2666Mhz and just pick up 1600Mhz RAM. Also, what is the purpose for this PC? If it is for gaming I would probably knock the 3770K down to a I5-3570K.

I would go with a different PSU then the one you listed. For crossfire cards 700w will power them, but I'd opt for something around 800-850w range. This will allow you some headroom for the future.

When it comes to 690 vs 7970 CFX it all comes down to patience. When running two cards you will often run into driver issues and things such as micro stuttering. Additionally, it create much more heat and noise. So, if you can deal with things like that - go with the 7970's. If not, go with the 690.

For your storage, I would opt for a regular SSD instead of a hybrid and just buy a larger secondary drive.

I haven't been able to beat this one on my own and have exhausted my skill set at this point. I followed the directions and am attaching the logs. Of note, when combofix rebooted, the virus scanner (avira) reinitialized so I dont know if it interfered. Definately saw root kit activity, including avira deleting a root kit .sys file.

This is a friends computer I am working on and it does not have live internet access at the moment. (The ISP turned off her connection saying that her IP address - not wifi, btw - was transmitting continous spam mail for male enlargement products).

Thanks in advance for your help and time!

I was browsing craigslist and came across a T420 that they were asking 160 for.  The person selling it didn't appear to know much about pc's, or how to take care of them.  I asked her to email the model number and it's one with a single 4gb ram stick and a 160 GB ssd.  We met, it was filthy, but could tell the keys were barely used.  The office install she advertised wasn't working, so she offered another 20 off.  For 140, I bought happily.  Brought it home, took out the keyboard and scrubbed it down.  Now it looks like a new pc.  It had a 160gb Intel 320 ssd in it and the single stick of ddr3 4 gb 1333 ram.  Pulled out the SSD, put in my Toshiba 256 GB Q series Pro Sata 3 in, put in an 8 GB kit of DDR3L 1600 mhz ram that wouldn't work in my T410 and works just fine.  Put the 160 Intel SSD in my T410 and added the 4gb memory to make my T410 a 6gb machine.  Now my Toshiba SSD is working at over 500 MB/SEC.  being on Sata 3.  As far as I'm concerned a win win day.

Before I can give an approx price tag on your system, one thing for me needs a little clarification, maybe this to will help others slap a price tag on your system.

But I'm a little leery with the use of some words here, "just bought" and "brand new' and "few months old"! But with the BIOS having a version date of July-31-2007, how new can this computer be?

I'll just sit back a while and see if this can be clearly explained by either you and or someone else out there who might have an answer. After that I may slap a price tag on what I feel this system is worth. But do take one thing into consideration when standing by and awaiting peoples approx value of your system. Just like buying a new car, once it's front two tires hit a city street the dealership automatically devalues the car by 1/4 right from the get go, I should know I worked for Chevrolet as a car salesman for 3 years. So as like with cars so true with computers, they can depreciate their value very quickly. Even just by burning some hours on a computer, it can therefor go towards people not looking as the system as brand new anymore, but rather they might now think depreciated value.

Just something to think about!

I thought I'd make a thread that contains some useful info and some cool tools to use to make Win 8 all pretty and customised to your needs and geeky desires.

I will start with some basics and then list some tools you can use. Please feel free to add what you use and I will update the post with your suggestions and recommendations.

*Please note all tools and methods are used at your own risk , break your system and rant to me about it and I will laugh at you ~ Remember you are doing stuff Windows 8 is not designed to do but if you follow instructions provided by the authors you won't go wrong.*
Patching your system to allow Visual Styles

The first thing you will need to do is patch some files to allow you to add an unsigned custom "Visual Style" (VS) they are : themeui.dll, UXInit.dll and uxtheme.dll

You can use THIS or THIS . Please follow the instructions TO THE LETTER and you are good to go. Really easy to do and it's free.

*NOTE* Not sure if these will work on 8.1 but I'm sure they will , once a final version is released.

How to add a Visual Style.
Download a VS from your favourite source ( I will list some later on in the post) then unZip/unRar if needed. You will have to copy the unpacked files to your themes folder. This is located here :

C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

You should now have placed the "theme" and a folder containing shellstyle.dll and wallpaper ( If one is provided ) into the correct place.

I first thought it was malware...then discovered it was software...and now I believe it is in fact....a hardware problem.

So, what I need to do is install windows on my D drive, the one drive that is not screwy. The problem is how to remove everything from the c drive. Do i bother formatting it or should i just pillage what I need from that drive and then remove it myself?

Answer:Alright, you wanna play rough?

If C and D are separate physical drives.
Remove C
Promote D to master with its jumpers
Install Windows on new master now called C
Set old C to slave
reconnect old C now called D
Copy what stuff you wnat
use Fdisk or Diskpart to delete the partition on the screwed drive
Create new partition
reformat new partition.

Alright so, I've read about this problem alot about wireless lag spikes on vista, but none actually solves mine.
Tried the one with CMD with configuring global autotuning, Doesnt work...
So, my problem is this, I play for ex. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Surely the game runs well, but after 2-4minutes, i get a lag spike, which varies around 1second or until disconnect, Im running on an AMD supported computer, I dont know what brand its in, since after it got repaired, the brand sort of disappeared.
I have a completely new motherboard, No network card or anything, just a simple USB D-Link wireless adapter.

I recently got the smc8508t, a smc9462tx (64bit pci), and 2 smc9452tx (32bit pci) adapters. The smc9462tx went into the system in the sig. The other two went into a sn41g2 and a sn45g. These have 200GB wd harddrives. I copied a 2GB mpeg, a 1GB mpeg, and a 250MB folder with lots of 1-2MB files using the network browser and file sharing with winxp pro.
sn45g to sn41g2
fast 8.9-9MB/s for 1&2 and 8.3MB/s for 3
gige 30-31MB/s for 1&2 and 20MB/s for 3
gige jumbo (9014kB) 32-33MB/s for 1&2 and 21MB/s for 3

sn45g to mpx2
fast 7.3MB/s for 1&2 and 6.5MB/s for 3
gige 22MB/s for 1&2 and 14.5MB/s for 3
gige jumbo (9014kB) 23-24MB/s for 1&2 and 14.5MB/s for 3

I think this shows that my transfer rates are highly dependent upon the harddrive speed since my mpx2 has fairly slow harddrives in comparison. I did a rough estimate of the cpu usage and in going from gige to gige with jumbo frames it dropped from 55% to 45% during a 1GB transfer. I also did the tests copying the filed in the other directions but the numbers did not change too much. All in all it was about $300 for the switch, cards, and cables.

I just installed it this am, and already thinking I am regretting it.

Why is it so sluggish?
With the prior version of win10, it felt snappier.

So what is the story here?
What is the advantage?
Is it that every upgrade, ms causes the system to run more poorly than before?

Is creator update the future, meaning even if I unnstall this, it is going to be forced install someday?

Example, I click the start menu and it delays opening, the menu scrolls jerkily.
Moving the mouse around it lags or even stops responding.

I takes a longer time to open pictures.

Only 10 days to revert before your stuck with it.

I played with a Thinkpad at a store recently and was struck by the rough touchpad. I didn't like how it felt-- too much friction. I have had htis problem for ages, and now want to actually fix it!

I have permintently coloured titles on my desktop icons. I have tried going to control panel/System/Advanced/Performance/settings 'use drop shadows for icons'...etc...plus i have un-checked lock desktop icons.

Also there is a slight roughness around the icon, showing part of the same background colour as the title, as if the icon has been roughly cut out, leaving a jaggedy edge to the icon.

Anyone have similar problems, or knows how to solve this? I think I may have been a victim of spyware a few times.

Answer:Rough Desktop Icons and Opaque Icon Title

If you have ever right clicked on an item and clicked
"Set as desktop item..." then this may be the problem. You need to make sure that they are not selected.
Do this by right-clicking on the desktop >
Display / Desktop tab / then selecting "Customize Desktop".
Click on the Web tab and make sure none are selected.

The first item on the list is Repair Icons. To improve performance when loading icons into the user interface, Windows XP keeps track of all the icons currently in use in a special cache file. Guys, I'm using Lumia 720 and I'm perfectly happy with the quality of images it clicks. But now I've noticed some minor scratches on the protecting glass of camera lens. Though it do not seem to make any significant effects on the images, I'm quite worried.
Will that minor scratches have significant effects in the future? Should I repair it or just leave at it is?

Answer:Will rough scratches on camera housing affects picture quality?

Scratches can have an impact but if you do not see a problem now (and the scratch stays the same), then also in the future you will not have a problem.
So I would suggest to leave it as is.
But you could already check around how to repair it. (just in case).
I am not sure if you have glasses. But if you have then you probably know that even if they have a scratch on the glass you will not see it.
Or if the glasses are dirty. Only if the scratch is to big or the glasses to dirty you will notice.

When I use OneNote on my tablet built-in screen as the secondary display in Extended Desktop mode, ink is not as smooth as it is in Single display. The lines looks rough and jagged. See the image below to compare: I noticed this problem while trying to resolve another one (see my post here). It was after I updated MultiTouch Driver from version 3.0.7.13 to 7.0.2.19. However, since I'm not running OneNote often in Extended Desktop Mode, this might not be related to that because I didn't had the "chance" to see if I got the same problem using version 3.0.7.13. However, like mentionned in my other post discussing the driver problem, the ink looks better since I re-installed the driver correctly. However, I still notice a difference in the ink smoothing between the Single Display and Extended Desktop mode. It could be an hardware problem too. I'm using Utrabase docking station to connect my external display which I set as primary. If anyone else is experiencing those symptoms, I will be more than happy to share more details and try to find a solution.

I might pick one up just to play around with anyway, but lack of network share access prevents me from using it as my day to day PC. Well that and the inability to open TrueCrypt containers. Other than that I think it could be pretty good for most of my daily use.

Google print button doesn't work well most of the time. So far it is the weakest point of Google Chrome. If you print pages frequently in Chrome, you can install iReader which is an extension for Readability which increases page readability and adds extra options to hide images if you want.

Hello guys! I've tried everything from this thread How to remove Play-Bar.net redirect (Virus Removal Guide) to remove the playbar.net malware but it seems to keep persisting. As you can see in the picture below, this malicious search bar still exists.

I have 1) reset google chrome; 2) delete and reinstalled google chrome; 3) install karspersaky, malwarebytes, hitmanpro, spyhunter. By far only spyhunter identified playbar and network plus but charge money for deleting them. I would appreciate your help, guys. Thanks!

1) Playbar.biz infection

2) plus_network infection

3) pop up ads (random)

if ALL devices disconnect including cable connected
then its the router , internal wiring or line /bt issue

how often does it disconnect ?

Hi everyone,

Hope someone can help me. When downloading files using chrome I keep getting "unknown network error" before the download is complete. Why is this happening and what can I do about it? I am using vista on an acer aspire 5535 laptop. I tried using internet explorer a few times instead but it has also happened there. I would be very grateful if someone has any ideas.

Thanks very much.

Answer:Chrome unknown network error when downloading

Please show the following for before starting a download and then again when you get the error.

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I apologize ahead of time if this is in the wrong forum. I debated putting this into the system and security forum but I didn't know if it would fit.

Whenever I try to download any form of media, lately I am constantly confronted with a "failed - network error" message. I have run Trend Micro and Malwarebytes, and it has come up with alerting me I still have remnants of the Trovi virus in my Chrome preferences. I got rid of the Trovi, but it is still there, even after multiple quarantined and quarantined to deletes.

I have tried resetting my setting to factory setting on Chrome, but I still get this issue.

My question is; how do I get rid of this? If I uninstall and reinstall Chrome will that get rid of it? Or will it still be in my settings once I do?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Chrome assistance - failed network error

Try booting into safe mode, and performing the Virus scans.

Where are you downloading the media from? I wondering if they are infected?

Question: SSD Caching

So recently I've been playing with the Lenovo T431s, but this is not about the laptop it's about the 24 GB SSD drive they install for caching, I think it's a cool feature to have.So the default configuration is a 16 GB caching drive and a 8 GB hibernation partition which I didn't figure was needed.  So since I'm looking at distributing this model to our users I had to learn the configuration of the software.  For starters it uses the ExpressCache application which really doesn't have many configurations options the only one I found hand was the -preload option.  So the basics configuration is as follows:This is a high level overview that will be detailed laterUninstall Expresscache - Reboot RequiredRun DiskPart to configure the SSD cardReinstall Expresscache - Reboot requiredLoad desired files and foldersSince this is a mass deployment I set up the machine with all the applications and configuration settings and uninstalled Expresscache before capturing the image so I don't have to worry about the first step of uninstalling the application.Image is put on the machine with a batch file and 2 Diskpart scriptsDiskpart Script 1 =================List Disk=================This is designed to identify the correct disk to work withDiskpart Script 2=================Select Disk %dsknum% Clean Convert MBR Create Partition PrimarySet ID=73 Override Exit =================Once the correct disk is identified all partitions are removed, it... Answer:SSD Caching

Thanks for the information, sure it will be useful to those interested in SSD caching and particularly the laptops you've been using it on.Personally I've never seen the point in SSD caching generally, I would always rather just go with an SSD rather than a small SSD to cache some reads and writes.  It's not really a halfway house between SSD and HDD performance as is usually advertised, IME it's usually much less than that.  Of course, if your read/write operations are quite limited and you can always hit the cache, then you'll get much more than that, almost to the level of a proper SSD perhaps.  But, if they're so limited...why not just use an SSD on its own, as the HDD would be redundant in that case?Slightly off topic I know, I've just never really seen the point.  It seems like an unnecessary complication.

Question: Web caching

So since my earlier thread about Squid didn't go down to well, maybe this one will get a better response.

What do you guys use at work for web caching? Basically our T1 is limited to 1.5 up/down and 90% of the traffic is HTTP. I want to cache web pages so that less bandwidth is used and web pages load faster.

How can I achieve this goal?

Answer:Web caching

I would setup a transparent web proxy with content filtering courtesy of endian or astaro. If that is too much then you can always setup a plain web proxy with no content filter with smoothwall or ipcop.

You could also setup a proxy with ISA server. If you're running SBS2003 you may already have it. If I remember correctly the Premium version includes ISA.

Hi, I have a Lenovo Y510P Windows 8.1 with 1TB of HDD and 24GB of SSD in the M.2 interface. I hace also installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology, and it has no warning, seems to work fine. It's supposed that the SSD is working as a SSD cache, but I can see in THIS PC that the SSD is free everytime, there's always 21.7GB free.I've read that if the SSD is a cache drive, I wouldn't be able to see it in THIS PC, because it's not a partition.I have to say that I notice my computer really fast, it boots in 17 sec. But I've heard that HDD's can boot Windows 8.1 in 17 seg, so I don't know what to think. How can I make sure that my SSD is working? Why I have always 21.7GB of 24.9GB free of the SSD? Thanks!

Question: IE 8 Caching Bug

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

Question: DNS Caching

I just have a question about this. I got a vista home premium 32-bit gateway laptop. And I see the option to delete DNS Cache in CCleaner. All I'm curious about is, what is that really going to do? Anything major besides make my pages load .2 seconds slower?

Answer:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Question: W10 caching

On all my systems I check the Resource Monitor > Memory tab from time to time. It is my impression that W10 does a lot more caching than the other Windows. Even after little use I have a cache with appr. 3GB of stuff. What is your experience.

Answer:W10 caching

I have 10 in a VM and it's not used all that often. It has 2 gB of RAM assigned.
That being said, it's not caching all that much, but the numbers are steadily increasing as Windows Updates are being installed

Started at a bit over 800 mB
Increased to 1100 mB fairly rapidly
Slowed down after this, but still increasing at about 4 mB/minute
It varies a lot, but the 4mB/minute seems to be the average at this point.

And just after typing this, it seems to have stopped at 1164 mB

EDIT: It seems to be decreasing now, and Windows Update has finished installing updates.

Question: Smooth to Lag

Hey everyone, how's it going?

Not so good for me, but hopefully will be better. I've been gaming a lot more as of late, so I started playing CS:CZ. When I get on to play, the graphics are glitchy and it's hard to aim at the pace the game is going. I've seen this computer perform really well, while the graphics looked very nice when I use to play CZ:CS. I know my computer has the potential to do that again, but what happened? I lag so much, and everything is glitchy. When I go to hardware, and search for updated drivers.. it says I already have the most updated drivers, which I find hard to believe. I don't think it's my internet connection because I've had no problem with this before, and I've seen how well my computer can perform. No one has yet to help me solve this problem, and I'm hoping this forum might be the one. I've tried asking on steampowered.com, but no help what so ever.

Hello everyone. Thank you for your access.
I am a user of the latest version Firefox and Vivaldi Browser.

I have a question about "Hola VPN" extension on Google Chrome.

Today, I installed the Vivaldi Browser and some extensions to my desktop PC.
I am using Firefox, and I like it very much. But I wanted to try a new Browser, so I choosed Vivaldi.

I also want to introduce a VPN extension to Vivaldi. I searched it on the Google Chrome Official Store.
Then I find the Hola VPN Extension. It seemed that the "Hola" is very useful extension. I installed it to my Vivaldi.

But I am worrying that is the Hola VPN extension connects P2P networks.

In Japan, a famous magazine-blog told that Hola VPN is using P2P networks for manage the service, and Hola Client Soft is connects this P2P networks.
The article also says that if you installed and use Hola VPN Software, your bandwidth will be used by other user of Hola VPN, and it may lead to accidents.

So I want to ask everyone about Hola VPN Extensions.

Question 1:
Is the Hola VPN extension on Google Chrome connects P2P Networks?

Question 2:
Does installing Chrome extension of Hola VPN lead to using my network bandwidth by other Hola VPN users?

Question 3:
Is the news article right?

Question 4:
Did you know some Free VPN extensions for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox?

Question: Awkward caching

I've recently noticed a lot of strange lag in a lot of games right as the game finishes its load screen. When I move the camera around, it'll stop and skip around a bit, till it seems to have everything loaded, after which it's smooth, untill I move to another area where it needs to load more stuff from disk. I didn't use to have this problem and I was wondering if any of you had any tips to improve the caching in Windows, seeing as it's happening in most games.

I'm using Windows 8 Pro x64

My system specs are as follows:

Q6600 @ 3.2GHz
Asus Maximus II Formula
6GB DDR2 Memory
GF 670 2GB

Lastly, I'm not running out of memory, as that would explain noticeable swapping.

Answer:Awkward caching

What game/program? Have you got a lot of background programs running? You should check with system internal's 'autoruns' - then try disabling them all (be careful not to disable drivers and system processes in autoruns), and if that fixes it, enable them one by one to determine which one might be a problem, then find alternatives if possible. And also, are you using the newest NVidia drivers?

Kept deleting and re-caching sp3. Finnaly worked ok. Same for some of the other *.spf updates. With others the problem is ongoing but I'm sure if I keep deleting and re-caching they will work eventually. If anyone has a more reliable solution I'd love to hear it.

Hi, I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y510p with a 25gb SSD that's currently being used only for caching. I would like to use it to install some programs (video, audio and photo editors, map creator, matlab, etc). I know it has very limited space but I think these programs will run better in the ssd. Am I right? Is there any restriction abou this ssd I should take note? And how should I do it, can I just format it and start using it?

Answer:USES TO 25GB SSD (BEYOND CACHING)

If you format your SSD and try using it as a normal HDD, possibly these things can happen -

1) Your computer will boot slow.
2) Every task you do will become slow (browsing/opening Apps/settings etc.)
3) There is a chance your OS can be corrupted (maybe 5%),
4) The programs you install on the SSD will be faster (Dont know how much but yeah they will be)
5) Due to so much constant writing and reading from this SSD, it can fail quickly (depends on model and brand)

Thats just from my knowledge.
(Not sure if you can use part of SSD as cache and part as regular HDD, I think you can but the size is too small)

Now that I've been on my T1 for a few days it's rather apparent nothing is cached upstream. On my 3G connection I`m not sure if Verizon runs Cache appliances or what but I never felt like I was "Reloading" the same assets 2hrs later.

Currently I visit a site it loads slow 1st time while downloading all assets, browse around local cache takes care of it and it's super fast. Come back in an hour? Two? and it does the initial hit to download to local cache.

I`m wanting to run some type of caching appliance or custom setup (server I configure) so that I can speed up my page loads and lower my requests to the "internet".

I have no clue where to start looking or what to look for.

All I've seen is:
https://www.sonicwall.com/us/en/products/WXA_Series.html#tab=models

And it's a bit out of my budget

I'd prefer to do something on an Intel NUC w/RAMDISK & SSD. <$500

Hi

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on 192.168.0.7 and 192.168.0.9.
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls acce... Read more

My problem is that winXP will cache the files, so even though they have been updated, when i open them for a second time they show the original data, and not the updated data.

Anybody know how to disable the caching of files like this (it does the same thing with .xls files that im using) for a specific folder in XP?

Question: Caching Issue

Guys, hoping someone can help me out...

I'm experiencing a problem when I'm browsing, in that there are Mbs & Mbs being dumped into my temporary folders.

I normally use IE8, but have also used Google Chrome and they both react in the same manner.

Approx 10 mins of browsing, plus a round of Tiger Woods Online can see as much as 150 Mbs be left in either the Temporary Internet Folder or Internet Cache (depending on the Browser used).

I have to run CCleaner on a regular basis, to stop slowdown due to this.

Has anyne else seen this, or can anyone assist in rectifying?

Thanks in advance.

There is an Advanced>>Security option under IE Tools>>Internet Options to Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder when closing the browser. Alternatively, you can reduce the space allocation for the folder under General>>Browsing History>>Settings.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.
Does anyone have any ideas?

For reference, the WPAD.dat is (edited of course):
//
// Start of Script
function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{
// Convert everything to lower case
var lhost = host.toLowerCase();
host = lhost;
//Local Networking Match

Question: msata caching

Hey,
I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

Thanks

Answer:msata caching

Found some more info about this pros and cons etc. If anyone interested stumbles across this. To high level for me though ive only ever had 1 hdd or sdd and used ext hdds at home and at work its all servers.

Question: E540 Caching

We are thinking of buying lenovo E540 P/N: 20C6003TUK. This laptop only comes with a 500GB HDD, it still has the mSATA slot available. I was wondering if I can install a 16GB SSD in there, install the expresscache software, and off it goes so to speak. I know lenovo sometime place a whitelist in the bios which only allows it to accept specific SSD's is this true? I couldn't say buy a samsung/intel etc... SSD and just put it in? Thanks in advance

Answer:E540 Caching

Hi,
I recently bought an E540 (20C6003A) with 16GB SSD.
As I didn't want to use the SSD as a cache but install my OS on it, I upgraded to an
128GB MyDigitalSSD SC2 Super Cache 2 42mm SATA III 6G M.2.
It is detected as a normal drive and I'm satisfied with the performance.
Windows 7 boots up from Power button press to browser within less
than 25 seconds with a clean windows installation. I did not try to use it as a cache.

Just be aware that the slot is an M.2 Slot with 42 mm length, _not_ an mSATA slot.

Question: Write caching

Ok, so my hard drive in ACHI mode does not allow me to enable write caching but in compatibility mode it does.

Should I enable write caching?

Also this whole thing about memory loss is bugging me on what they are talking about. I have a laptop with a battery and mostly has power. But what if power were to cut off or it gets somehow unpluged, will my HD be corrupt? or would that "Word" document I was working on that was not saved be gone, everything else will be fine?

Thanks

Answer:Write caching

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.

Also a tut on how to enable it with AHCI on, but I don't think it was relevant if you read all the comments in the tutorial.

But be notified that having it enabled has caused many to have a lower reported WEI score.
