Preferred Solution: CCleaner-Updater (Formerly CCleaner+)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: CCleaner help.

I was pointed in the direction in another thread on a different topic to ccleaner. I have since downloaded it and have played with it a bit. I do not know exactly how to use it. I did a scan on the registry and have a huge page full of listings. Is there a way to copy that and post it here? I am scared to have it "clean" the registy files before I know what they are.

Answer:CCleaner help.

Most here will probably tell you not to clean the registry, even with CCleaner, which is held in high regard generally. The chances of it having a measurable effect are minimal and you are taking some risk. But some people have a compulsion to clean stuff.

I've occasionally used the registry cleaner portion and have never had any trouble. But I've never noticed any performance improvement.

If you just can't help yourself and have to use it, do a backup when it offers you the chance.

A guru I know of says he has used it for a decade on the registry with no issues, but he leaves the "unused file extensions" checkbox unchecked.

Suit yourself. I don't think the comments on this forum about not using it persuades many people.

By all accounts, the other part of it--the regular cleaner---is nearly foolproof and many here use it enthusiastically. I am one of those people. I don't notice any performance improvement, but it does save space over time.

Does anyone know what the default settings are?
In the Malware removal section, instructions were to have CCleaner set up as the default settings..

but the instructions also mentioned that CCleaner must be only from the Windows tab, and I believe default settings checks off everything from the Applications tab as well.

So what is the recommended parts to check off?

Question: CCleaner

Any CCleaner users can help me with this question. Seems like it can "clean" forever sometimes when I haven't even used the computer or browser. Ex. I can run the cleaner once, clean all the temp files and etc. Then run it again and there will still  be more to clean. After the second time all will be clean - 0 bytes. Strangely, sometimes when I run a forth time just for SnG's there will be the same files again that I could've swore I deleted on the first pass....what gives? To add, all the runs would've been done in succession.

Anyone else notice this characteristic on CCleaner? I have the most recent version.  Been using the app for a while and I like it, though this is weird I find.

Thanks

Answer:CCleaner

Mine behaves exactly the same way.  Possibly the 1st run creates some 'loose ends'.  Norton File Cleanup always seems to need 2 runs.  They all seem to be that way.  I just take it as another acceptable quirk.  IANM

After fixing, am still have the same issues. Any ideas?

Answer:Ccleaner help

Reboot, and rerun ccleaner.

See if that helps any. Some cases I found that ccleaner will mark certain registry entries for deletion, but windows will not delete them until a reboot.

Question: CCleaner or TFC?

Hello,

I have a SSD and would like to know which program between CCleaner and TFC you suggest for cleaning temp files. Some say that CCleaner is not recommended for SSD disks, and I do not know whether that statement is true or valid, so I am trusting your replies, as always, many thanks for any suggestion

Enrico

Answer:CCleaner or TFC?

CCleaner is safe to use on a SSD apart from the Wipe Free Space option which should not be used.  To be on the safe side you should also uncheck the Wipe Free Space items under Options > Settings.

The difference with TFC is that it cleans temp files for all user accounts, whereas CCleaner only cleans up the logged on user account - unless you have CCleaner Professional.  Also TFC requires a system restart after use which CCleaner does not.

Hope this helps.

If you use ccleaner, just use the cleaner. Do NOT use the registry cleaner. I would never trust anything that attempts to "fix" the registry. Also, Windows 7 defrags itself automatically, so there is no need for a 3rd party defragger.

Question: Ccleaner

Hello
I was advised to use the section of Ccleaner labeled, Windows and Applications if you use; temp files, history, cookies, urls, autocomplete, recent docs, run, recycle bin and clipboard.
Is this sound advise or should I just perform a disc cleanup?

Answer:Ccleaner

Using CCleaner that way is just fine.

Myself, I don't have the Recycle bin checked. I empty it on my own. It's a personal preference.

Question: CCleaner

I apologise if this is in the wrong section. It is just information.

Up until recently, CCleaner showed all the startup programs including Chrome. The recent updates do not show any startup data for Chrome, the panel is blank. All the other sections are OK.

This has been reported to Piriform by a number of users including me and the message is that they are looking into it.

CCleaner does seem to include Chrome files etc. in the other cleaning options, but if one area of data is missing, I do not trust it. Perhaps the files now being shown are old  files and not current. Who knows ?

Answer:CCleaner

Have you updated CCleaner recently? It may be there is a bug in the version you have. You can update CCleaner by
opening it and choosing update now.....or something similar.

There are older versions available but I have no idea what if any adware will be bundled with them. One site offering

Question: ccleaner

Okay so i have mentioned this programe before and i have watched youtube vids on it too but nobody, that i have found, tells you what not to delete. Not wanting my computer to crash or develope other nasties i like to play it safe and therefore what dangers are there in deleting things from this programe? I don't want to delete anything from my favourits section. what items should i leave unticked for complete safety and if i do go wrong how do i rectify the mistake other than do a system restore?

Answer:ccleaner

On my first run I took off all the ticks and ran analyse on one tick at a time. I let it show up what it was finding and if I did not fancy proceeding I unticked and went to next line. This allowed me to see what it was finding and gave me confidence to delete step by step. You can do a backup when dealing with registry with the built in save.Don't clean if you are uncertain but most will tell you CCleaner removes junk and not good stuff. You should always keep a backup. Even if you don't use CCleaner.

Answer:Ccleaner-Don't use?

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool that removes unused, temporary and junk files from your system to include temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, etc. While CCleaner is safe and useful for removing these temporary and junk files, I do not recommend using the built-in registry cleaning feature unless you have a good understanding of the registry. In fact, Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons. Please read: Why you should not use Registry Cleaners and Optimization Tools

Question: CCleaner

This is from the Basic Computer Maintenance thread on this forum :

'Remove invalid registry entries:
Next up is the registry. Frankly, the registry is overrated as a speed tweak, in general, but it does get large and can contain many invalid references. The registry is not an area for even the average computer user to be playing around in. The good news is CCleaner has a safe registry cleaner built in, so why not clean out old, invalid entries?

Click the issues button.
Click scan for issues.
Click fix selected issues.

Thats it, your done, a safe, fast registry clean.'

My problem is when i open the CCleaner program i cant see a button that says 'issues'. Can anyone help me out?

Answer:CCleaner

Which version are you using? In the latest version, they've replace the title, Issues, with Registry.

By the way, I would add this to the three-step procedure: Backup the registry when prompted.

Question: CCleaner?

hi

I have installed quite lot of programs and deinstalled again, if I don't need on my notebook with WIN 7 prof. 64-bit.
Sometimes an uninstallation process not really 100%, some entries still remain in the registry.
Is it a good idea to clean WIN7 time to time with CCleaner?

Answer:CCleaner?

Upiter of course it is perfectly safe to use just remembering that any cookies you use for sites that you have a password for you keep. If you don't know how to do that post back but generally speaking CCleaner is very good at cleaning the unneeded stuff out.

If you use the reg check in it whatever is thrown up just make sure you save the results to Documents - it will give you that option before fixing them. if things go ape when you tidy the registry you can go back and replace the items from that back up.

Now for the stuff in the registry if you are not sure of doing stuff in there don't go there and in future when uninstalling programs use the Revo uninstaller it delves into the reg entries and will do a much more thorough job of uninstalling any programs by searching out the reg entires.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems < the left hand list has the free version.

Hi,
I have been using CCleaner for a wile now but only for Issues.
I am running it now for the cleanner and it's been running for about ten mins.
Is this normal? I don't see a backup for the cleanner is it safe to just let it do it's thing?confused
Thanks, Dan

Answer:CCleaner

I'd just let it run... sometimes it takes awhile if you haven't cleaned your temp files in a long time.

Also, it won't back up temp files. It's pretty darn safe. There's no real damage you can do from removing temp files.

Question: CCleaner

Does anyone have a professional opinion on CCleaner's registry utility's impact on your average system? I don't like that it removes 'unused' and 'obsolete' items (as the 'usage' can manifest itself pretty much anywhere and I'm afraid it'll break programs).

Answer:CCleaner

While ccleaner's registry applet is relatively benign, it does absolutely NO good. Nor does any other registry "cleaner". There is no such thing as a good registry cleaner, only those that don't do much (if any) harm. The best of them do no damage, while the worst of them will leave your system unusable. But NONE of them do anything useful. Stay away from all registry cleaners.

Hello,I'm moving this to the Other Applications forum. That said, I see that you are receiving assistance here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/333339/hijackthis-help/ ; therefore, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.Orange Blossom

My Registry has nevr been cleaned, my computer is quite a few years old, and has had lots of use. Problem is I don't want to go anywhere near the Registry, it makes me nervous I have CCleaner. How good is It's Registry Cleaner? Is it easy to use? Any info would be helpful.......

Answer:CCleaner

Bleeping Computer does not recommend the use of Registry cleaners.Unless you have a specific problem you're trying to correct, it's best to stay out of the Registry.Registry cleaners mark entries as bad, depending on what the software creator "thinks", is bad. That's why no 2 cleaners will find all of the same, "problems".Registry "problems" actually have very little effect, on the overall performance of the operating system. Please see this article:XP Fixes Myth #1: Registry CleanersIf you're not experienced with working in the registry, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT.Improper changes to the registry could render your computer inoperable. If you do insist on using Registry cleaners, ALWAYS backup the registry BEFORE making any changes.Instructions, on how to do that, can be found here:How to back up, edit, and restore the registry(I highly recommend, you make a copy of this article.)

I updated CCleaner to the newest version 1.15.078 I can run the cleaner fine without any problems. I scan for issues and if any are found I checkmark them to fix prior to fixing I click yes to back these up and CCleaner shuts down and won't let me back up the files (no it doesn't fix them either it just shuts down).
I didn't have this problem with the previous version so yes I can go back to that but what is the purpose of having an update for people to install if it isn't going to work properly?? Yes I have also uninstalled prior to installing the updated version.
I am running WinXP SP2 with 2005 version of Norton Personal Firewall & System Works.
Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this problem? I did have Norton Go Back installed on my computer found out that it was creating a conflict with my Microsoft Digital Image Suite 9 so I uninstalled the Norton Go Back. I ran the CCleaner scan for issues after I uninstalled the NGB and when I clicked yes to back up it shut down so that dashed my hopes of there being a conflict. I even tried uninstalling the CCleaner and reinstalling it and that didn't help either.

I've ran avast scan on boot and run and corrected a hjiack this log and the problems above haven't been corrected ='(

has this happend to anyone else using ccleaner? I never made a back up of what I deleted so is there anyway I can fix it? baring in mind that I can no longer run a system restore.

Answer:ccleaner

By "cleaning out keys" you mean using the issues tab in CCleaner? It gave you an option to back-up the files, no? If you opted to back them up, then simply restore them. See how it works then.

Hope this helps,

Answer:Ccleaner?

Only if you tell it to; you are given the option when installing the program. It works fine if you don't install the toolbar.

Co-branding like that is getting more popular; it helps offset the expense of writing a program someone intends to be freeware.

And the version MG has is the same release everyone else offers, even the author's site.

Question: CCleaner

I am running Windows XP SP2 with Mcafee Security Center which has Firewall, Antivirus, Popup/Add/&Web Bug blockers in its Privacy Service.

Want to know if anyone has had any problems with CCleaner causing issues on their computer after running a complete "clean" and/or "fixing" all the issues it comes up with in the registry. Any infor would be helpful.

KM1

Answer:CCleaner

In my experience registry cleaners (including CCleaner)*often* cause problems -which is why they most often have a back-up utility -so you can restore any changes you've made.
***that's not to say that you shouldn't clean your registry using this type of software***
If you are unsure how to back-up the registry you could read this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322756
As I mentioned most programs that clean the registry automatically create a back-up -if you're unsure do it manually via the link above.
As long as you have a back-up you should be ok, and, again, it *is* worth it to clean the registry every so often -especially if you've never done it or you install/uninstall proggies regularly.
Hope this helped
Yours,
522.

Thanks and God Bless
Bruce

Answer:ccleaner

Hi

If you are meaning autosign ( where you have to retype user and password ) in for your bank then its likely that the cookie set for the bank is by default removed when you run CCleaners Cleaner, but you can protect this cookie via going to Options > Cookies > look down the left list and find your Banks Cookie and use the -> to add it to the protected ( cookies to keep list )

You can do this with other cookies.

If you connect to your bank in a different way to logging in to an online page, please advise to what method is used.

Question: Ccleaner

Hello
I would not ever use the regisrtry cleaner per se but I was told that it is relatively safe to use the Windows or Applications part exspecially if you only check; Temp files, history, cookies, mru's, auto complete, recent docs, recycle bin, clipboard and run.
Was the advice sound?

Answer:Ccleaner

The registry section of CCleaner is safe to use. It will prompt you to make a backup before it runs. If for some reason you find and issue that was incorrect, you can easily restore the backup.

Question: Help with CCleaner

I regularly use CCleaner, probably around 3 times a week. The thing is, when it cleans out Firefox and Google Chrome, all my saved logins are gone. For example, I never log out of VF, SF or EF. My logins are saved. After using CCleaner, they aren't. Which options do I need to uncheck or check in the Chrome and FF sections to not lose my save logins or passwords.

I also want to clean as much as I can including history, cache, cookies etc. What else is it safe to check? I'd like to check as many options as possible. I've attached a screenshot of my current options below.

Answer:Help with CCleaner

Uncheck cookies and that should eliminate the login problem.

Question: Ccleaner help me!!

does it actully work, it seems that the same things keep popping up, everytime i go to use it and how often should i use the program

Answer:Ccleaner help me!!

I use the CCleaner "Run Cleaner" and Registry tab, followed by the also-state-of-the-art Auslogics Disk and Registry Defraggers, after an install is completed and then about every month.

A good rule of thumb is if you have to wait long for it to complete, then run it more often.

[If it gets bogged down with temp internet files, then check "Empty temporary folder when browser is closed" in Internet Options>Advanced.]

In ten years of installing on hundreds of machines, and knowing dozens of others who have used it regularly, the CCleaner has never presented ANY issues. It simply doesn't seem to make mistakes, probably a tribute to the genius behind it.

Piriform often don't release the Slim version until ~ 2 weeks after the main software is updated.

As Mike31Jp points out in the comments section of the News article, using the Portable files to refresh your installed CCleaner gives you the equivalent of the Slim version without needing to wait for the official version to be released.

Yes it is safe but be aware that removing all cookies will remove any saved passwords. And removing History may remove things you may wish to have kept too. It's up to you. You can selectively setup which Cookies to always keep under Options>>Cookies.

Also note that eveything under the Windows tab and the Applications tab are part of what gets cleaned up when you click Run Cleaner.

Hi I just downloaded CCleaner and because I needed to uninstall Amazing Photo Editor. So I went to "tools" and selected Amazing Photo Editor, and instead of clicking "run uninstall" i accidently clicked "delete title". Its not off my computer, just off the list of programs. How do I get the Title of Amazing Photo Editor back on the list so that I can uninstall it?

Thanks!

Answer:CCleaner help please?

I don't think you can get it back on the list.

I'm not certain where CCleaner gets its list. If Amazing Photo Editor isn't in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs then you could go to C:\Program Files folder and see if you have a folder for that program and look to see if there is an uninstaller in the folder which you could run.

If no such uninstaller you could try Revo uninstaller (but again I'm not sure if it gets its list from Windows or populates itself).

I was wondering what people thought about this. I was reading this other post about there way of cleaning is. And with Ccleaner I scanned the register section and got like 50 plus missing dll and a lot of etc.. and I was wondering if it was okay to fix all those or no and don't risk hurting my computer?

Answer:Ccleaner

I've used the Ccleaner registry cleaning tool on many Pcs and lappies with zero issues.
Ccleaner will prompt you to "save changes" before cleaning up the registry.
I'd reccomend you do that, as in the UNLIKELY event of a hiccup, the registry can be restored to it's earlier state.
Quite honestly I've yet to see a post on Mg's where CC had created problems on a PC.

I downloaded CCleaner and went through the Windows and Applications part with not much of a problem.
But when I went to Registry section and I ran it, it came back with 411 entries. It asked if i wanted to make a copy of them and I did and it was put into my Documents folder.
I started going through the entries and saw some were from from programs that were installed and removed, so I knew i could remove them. But there were entries that I have no idea of what they are. Some have a huge set of numbers and others I have no idea what they mean. But there were also some of the Microsoft UPDATES in this file. So I am stuck at that point.
Should I post what these files are? If so, I am not sure if I know how.

If it isnt broken dont worry about it. If it is do a repair install, or a complete install of the OS.

Question: AVG & CCleaner

Been following the wisdom here for a while now, using CCleaner. Also been using AVG free for years.

AVG seems to create a huge temp file doing its scan and CCleaner wants to delete this each time. In CCleaner should the AVG tick in Utilities be removed to keep this temp file? Would AVG benefit by having yesterdays temp file available?

Answer:AVG & CCleaner

Hi

I would say no to keeping this temp file, was going to say unless AVG found any malware but then that would be in report. I dont see a benefit that sticks out as its likely just a history of what was scanned, are there many of these files in the temp location and what size are they?

What file extention do these files have as there was an issue with temp files being created with .MHT extention that latest version of AVG should fix.

Question: CCleaner help

I use to use CCleaner to clean the Registry and I allways wanted to ask about it.

If I un install say Audacity it will leave files in the Registry and all programs do this.

So when I use CCleaner it sould get any files that are not Hoocked into other Programs anymore.

Well how does it do this and does it work?

If say some programs are un installed then how does it look for files in the Registry to see if they are still Hoocked into other programs?

Answer:CCleaner help

There are often unused registry entries left behind after a successful uninstallation. These unused entries do not affect your computer performance in any way, and are best left alone. These are not "registry errors", as some commercial "cleaners" want you to believe, but just unused entries, taking up a few bytes on your HD.

Some people are obsessed with "cleaning" the registry, and some day they will have scrubbed their registry hives so clean that the computer won't start any more.

Question: Ccleaner????

When using Ccleaner Wipe Free Space,,,System Restore Points are deleted. Windows has a habit of deleting restore points to make disk space when it seems that there isn't any more. Filling the free space with 0 files gives Windows that impression. Hope I helped someone,,I found out the hard way!!!!

Answer:Ccleaner????

Most PC's have system restore set to 10%-12% of HDD space, I usually go with one to three percent, if it is used at all. Usually give the Recycle Bin less room too. Always install CCleaner on any PC that goes on line, that I am using, but have only used the wipe free space option on a few occasions .

Question: CCleaner and WMP

I think with the latest version CCleaner added detection of WMP files. Or at least I never saw them before.

When I run CCleaner with WMP selected under Applications it finds over 1 million KB of Art Cache .jpg files (sample attached). Can these be safely deleted?

I use iTunes as my media player for music but have found I need to run WMP to get my album art to display properly in Windows Explorer.

If deleting these files will jeopardize anything I will not touch them.

Answer:CCleaner and WMP

I doubt that anything "dangerous" will occur.
If you delete the art, WMP will just waste time downloading it and rebuilding the cache again.

If you are concerned, just deselect that option in CCleaner.

You could test it out.
Create a backup HDD image first and then use CCleaner.

Do you have an imaging program (e.g. Macrium Reflect)?

Do you know how to use Windows Backup?

If you notice any problems, you can just restore your system from the backup and deselect the option in CCleaner.

Question: ccleaner

I watched the MG tutorial about Ccleaner and have a lot of faith in MG itself.
I do not want to open up an age old debate about registry cleaners but, I was taught not to use the reg cleaners unless you are capable of working in the registry itself.
I use the Windows cleaner now and then.
Is there something about ccleaner that makes the registry cleaner safer than other reg cleaners?
Basically, is it advisable to use the cleaner periodically?

Answer:ccleaner

I use CCleaner's registry cleaner and I believe a good many other MG forum members also use it. CCleaner just has a very solid reputation as being a safe registry cleaner. It's not quite as aggressive as many other registry cleaners and this is probably a factor in it's safety record. I've used it for years, including its registry cleaner, and never encountered a problem with it.

I usually glance through the list of items found by CCleaner's registry cleaner but I usually do not take time to research them. Still, I'm curious about what it found and what I see there often intuitively seems like appropriate cleanup items to remove from the registry. For example, if I've uninstalled a program since my last use of the registry cleaner and see a few remnants of that program in the list, they are not something I feel need any research.

When using any registry cleaner, always backup your registry before allowing the scanner to make changes to your registry. CCleaner will prompt you to backup the registry and you should do so. You can periodically delete older registry backups. I usually keep the few most recent ones and delete older ones.

Hello. The program asks me whether I want to create a back up for the registry.

#1. Why does it ask me to do that?
#2. Is there any value in doing that?
#3. What happens if I do not?

Thanks
SC

Answer:CCleaner

CCleaner deletes registry objects that it deems unnecessary/wasteful/etc.

Sometimes, those registry items may not be "unnecessary", and the deletion of those that are may do odd things to your PC. So, in case something seems not right or downright wrong with your computer after it does a cleaning, it can always restore a backup of your registry to bring any of the deleted items to rectify the problem.

If you're not familiar with the registry (or even if you are) you should probably have it make a backup (just in case).

Question: CCleaner

Has anyone used the program CCleaner (a registry and file cleaner) with Windows 98? I read a few things about it and it seems that users either LOVE it or HATE it. Some posters on their forum page said it sure cleaned their computer - by deleting all their important files!

I have Windows 98 at home, but I tried it on my work computer first which runs Windows XP Pro. While it didn't delete the deaktop icons, Outlook Mailbox or MY Documents, it seems to me the computer is actually running slower!

Any inputs about this software is appreciated. Thanks!
