Ever since the transition over a year ago after my longtime internet service provider sold its assets in my area to another company, I have had great trouble with the spam filtering. The ISP spam filtering traps huge numbers of perfectly legitimate emails that I don't want kept from my Inbox. NOT ONCE has it trapped any of the "You just won a lottery you didn't enter" or "I need help with an inheritance" type emails that come. I don't get a lot of those, maybe one a month. It let a phony Walgreen's phishing email through 13 months ago. Fortunately I didn't bite.
I am too busy right now to go the trouble of changing ISPs. One support person told I could disable the spam filtering, but another subsequently told me I couldn't. I desire to disable it because it is doing nothing for security and is a big nuisance.
I have my email now with Outlook Express, but I will soon be switching, probably to Thunderbird. I don't want browser-based email because I don't want to navigate from column to column.
Any suggestions?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I would give Thunderbird a try, I use it here and am quite happy with it. Easy to setup and use.

We use a custom webapp for online training that has a feedback page built-in, all written in PHP. Whenever an email is made from the site the app uses the user's email address as the From address in the email header and sends it to our organization's email server. However, none of the emails come through. After a few months of back and forth with our Network Management Office, I realize the problem. Since the email is given a From of, say, [email protected], and comes from a private server on a static IP (no domain name), our local email server can't verify the domain to the sender and trashes it as spam. Our techs refuse to white list this, so I've been forced to BCC all the email to my personal account, and manually forward it in.
The server runs Red Hat Linux and sendmail. I'm not very comfortable with sendmail, and don't even know where to start. Basically, I need it to send emails that can legitimately enter our network. I tried setting From: to [email protected]<ip> and that didn't work. The email came through as "Apache <[email protected][hostname].local>".
There are critical emails, and I'm breaking a few regs by having my personal account in the mix, so I'm trying to find a good solution.
Do what you can to get the emails white listed.
As I type this I read off InBoxer at the bottom of this page under the heading PC Advisor Market Place. The pc runs Me and already has NAV installed. Is there any that actually do work mainly them viagra advert mails or Mortgage ones. My Gran keeps getting them.
I have these 2 contacts to whom I can never send emails together. My email to them is always returned and undeliverable. I can successfully send them emails separately. I am not sure if they have spam programs installed in their email system or not, but I am just wondering if spam program can block the emails for multiple receivers.
Or what else is a possibility of blocking my emails to them? Thanks
Posted via Mobile Device
When a message comes back undeliverable that message comes from the ISP's smtp server because it cannot find the user on the system. You sure the address is correct. I have made the mistake in the past of having the same person in my address book twice but their email address had one charcter transposed.
anyone got a list of spam words / key phrases that they use for a spam filter?
You know, a list of words that, if contained in an email, the spam filter will delete the email.
I'm using spamguard and need a list... I'm assuming someone has one... IF not, lets all contribute and create one for us to use!!
thoughts?

3 more repliesToday when using the internet on my phone, I got a pop-up message saying that I had accessed child pornography (which I was not viewing, never have done and never will!) and it asked me if I wanted to reload a page. It had the United Nations logo in the background and outlined the legal aspects of this in the UK, ie fines and prison sentences. Obviously I kept selecting "Don't reload" but it kept coming up. I don't know if this is fake or real, and that if it is real, I was being redirected to a website with that sort of content on it. I've done a scan on my phone and nothing's come up so I don't know what's going on! I'm really worried about this and don't know what to do.
It's completely fake. It's probably ransomware:
Ransomware is a type of malware which restricts access to the computer system that it infects, and demands a ransom paid to the creator(s) of the malware in order for the restriction to be removed.
Could you provide a screenshot of that pop-up message?
Though I don't know much about android security and malware, there are lots of free antivirus apps in GooglePlay, like Avast, AVG, McAfee... you could try scanning with several of those apps until something is detected.
But maybe wait for someone who knows more about this than me to reply.
Just chill out, you're safe, the messages are fake.
Accusations of stuff like child porn and copyright infringements are really common in ransomwares.
I run a simple web site of information about our Parish Council and village. When launched it contained links which would forward email to the proper recipients ... big mistake. There was an immediate increase of spam to all those with links.Within a day or two all links were removed except to the Parish Clerk who was happy to continue as the only contact. Now I notice, there is a proportion of spam which has a random start leading to @domain etc.I have phoned the host, got nowhere in Darjeeling or Mbai except to be asked to submit a ticket on their support address - a reply within an hour. (No reply after 6 hrs)I know I'm impatient, but if I remove the last link for email forwarding, will that stop the nuisance or is it too late?
If it starts with random letters/numbers where the username would usually be before the @ then it is your domain that has been harvested and that can happen without the link.I get this kind of mail for domains that don't have web pages associated with them so there are no links to be harvested.Your web host may offer a "black hole" facility which means that any mail that is not addressed to a bona fide account will get dropped into a black hole and not delivered. But that does mean that you have to be sure to set up a mailbox or redirect for every variation to which a genuine e-mail might be addressed (e.g. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]).

Several freeware/shareware (trial) programs to take a look at here.
Can anyone tell me about an easy, convenient to use, cheap or free spam filter for OE.
I have tried a couple but they either took ages to run, caused problems with OE or didn't do the job.
Thanks

Jenny check out Mailwasher http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2054 I use the Pro version which costs $$ but the version above is the freeware version of the same app but with a few less functions and will only monitor 1 email account.
I'm getting more spam than usual in my email, can someone suggest freeware spam blocker that has a good reputation?
Take a quick look at this one, ive never used it i kno a friend used some version of it..its only for MS Outlook and expressSpamfighter

I use Outlook Express to recive my Mail however in the last few months I have been reciving alot of unwanted spam about Invest ments I canot unsubscribe as each time the mail comes back or I get the site is unavailable is there a spam filter in Outlook I can set
Why don`t you set a Message Rule (Tools>Message Rules> Mail) Or add the senders to your blocked senders list? The latter will prevent delivery. Not Knowing your ISP, you may also be able to log into your account and set the filter(s) there.
3 more repliesWhenever I come across a spam-filter software or application (from download.com) I find that they function only with Outlook and Outlook Express.
Is there any spam-filter software for web based emails like yahoo or hotmail?
Web base e-mails like Yahoo and MyWay have there own spam filters. Any SPAM you receive, you can identify it as SPAM and it will be blocked after that.
MailWasher can block SPAM for OE or Hotmail accounts. There is a version you can buy, but I've been using the free version for a couple of years with OE. You can get either version here:
http://www.mailwasher.net/
The free version is limited to one account and doesn't work with Hotmail.

10 more repliesMy server has a filter and all the Viagara ,University degrees, Mortgages etc no longer hit my account. However I am now inundated with American Share Tips where the sending address changes all the time and reporting as Spam has no effect. However 90% of these are addressed to mainly three accounts ,none of which are mine, and apparently arrive on my acccount because my account is I am told by the Server BC in the original e-mail. My account must be BC three times because invariably these e-mails arrive in threes. It used to be fairly easy to tick and delete all these as Spam on the web but my Server is now introducing a new (improved!) web Mail Account where the delete process is much longer. Is there a free Spam Filter that can pick up e-mails on the web account not addressed to me and put in the Web Mail Spam Folder?
Mailwasher with some suitable rules; click hereor Magic Mail Monitor - less than 200kclick hereI use MMM3 and have filters to auto-delete any emails including the words `micro` and `cap` (amongst another 20 or 30 rules) - they seem to catch most of the `penny stock` spam, the text ones anyway. GIF images are easy to catch and delete too, another way of hiding spam from filters.

Read somewhere that much of the spam received is not addressed to you personally. Therefore, you can set up a filter through OE Message Rules for the content of the 'To:' field in a message.
How can I get an e-mail message if my e-mail address is not used? Do not quite understand. Would apppreciate an explanation or a good article regarding this specific issue.

Hi, Can anyone recommend a freeware email spam filter, I am using win 7 and outlook 2002. I was using an early free version of Mailwasher but it does not work with win 7. It must let you view the email senders and the subjects before you downloaded and if possible let you view the email as a plain text view. It must also accommodate 6 email addresses. Thanks
If you'd still like to continue using MailWasher, try installing AND running it in Compatibility Mode click here. G
1 more repliesI use a web account to access most of my mail.
But some of my friends are having severe problems with SPAM MAIL.
One of them even purchased Norton Internet Security 2005 package, which includes:
Firewall (I like ZoneAlarm better)
AntiVirus (I use AVG... better)
Privacy control ?
Spam Filter - which hooks into the email client (Eudora, Outlook)
The Spam Filter doesn't seem to be doing a good job... anything that works better? Or is there a setting in Norton that may help?
These idiotic spammers are making email bloody useless!
PS: Also, Perfered "child" filtering program... I've heard of such names as cyber nanny and cybersitter... It would need to block sites, but also log attempts to sites.
For filtering, I know of a freeware application called iProtectYou .
The spam filtering can probably be adjusted in the spam filter application. For me, I like the filter found in Pegasus e-mail client. It is much safer than Outlook, a lot more flexible, and is freeware. Also, it is a bit more complicated to use than OE.
I've had friends tell me that K9 is a good spam filter.
I am now totally fed up with all the crap that arrives daily in my inbox. I get at least 50 emails a day to my home account and most, if not all of them, are spam.
Although it is quite cathartic deleting email after email, the theraputic effects have become less of a novelty.
Honestly, whether "Molly likes it huge" or not, at my age I do not need to be "rock hard for hours".
Aslo, I have better things to do with my money than buy a Rolex, real or not.
So, I need a competant anti-Spam program and I'm considering investing in Spam Arrest.
Does anyone know if it's any good or would you reccommend something else?
First, I would see if your ISP (your internet provider) offers free software for filtering spam. Many do, and often they offer pretty good products. If it doesn't offer any, check out this listing/review of free spam filters:
http://email.about.com/od/windowsspamfightingtools/tp/free_spam.htm
To some degree, it depends on what email program you use - Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc.
I did think about posting this topic under the Web & Email section of the forum, but I've had a lot of help from you guys involved in the Security section, so I value your opinion.
Recently, I have had a marked increase in the amount of spam email (I don't need another watch; I don't need any medications; I don't require an online degree in less than 2 weeks, and I don't want to see my next door neighbours daughter try out her new webcam!)
I am running Win XP and using Outlook Express 6.
Anyone recommend a good filter?
Rhynos
depends on how much you want to pay.
most spam filters work on a Bayesian filtering system, meaning that the software "learns" what is spam and what is not spam by attributes of the e-mails. There'll be a time when you'l have to manually tell it what is spam and what's not, and there'll be false positives and false negatives, but they'll go down (quickly) after a few days of use.
I haven't used these products personally, but here's a few reputable and good products (did research on them). http://spamassassin.apache.org/ Spam-Assassin
http://www.spamihilator.com/
Spamihilator
just run a google search for "spam filter" for more
Also, may I suggest switching to Mozilla Thunderbird? Fully configurable, easy to use, plus has a very good built-in Bayesian spam filter. http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
I saw an update for the built in Outlook Spam filter in the latest Windows Update batch, and it seems to have made a HUGE difference.
I don't know what they did, but my mailbox is much improved since installing it (way more so than other updates in the last few years).
If you use MS Outlook 2007 I'd strongly recommend installing the latest junk mail filters as they are excellent this time round it seems
It's flippin brilliant - I haven't had any spam in my inbox at all!
Is there a free spam blocker on Major Geeks or elsewhere that I can download for windows ME?
Hi, try this one, PopMan. Only works with POP3 email clients like Yahoo but allows you to view your messages on the server before you download. You can delete any which you don't want straight off the server.
The address is: http://www.ch-software.de/popman
Currently, I use Spamfighter for my email filter and love it. However it causes problems on my wife's desktop. I use the free version of spamfighter. Now I'm looking for a replacement for such a filter. I am looking for recommendations for a commercial filter that shows up in outlook. The software needs to be user friendly and easy to use.
I am getting deluged with spam; credit offers, vacations, the usual..I have had it. Is there software someone can recommed to filter it all out? I am sick of it.
I have Outlook express.
The easiest way would be to call your ISP and create a new email address and abandon the old one.
And don't fill out any surveys on any websites. That's one way your email gets put on mailing lists.
I have been with Lineone.net/Tiscali for years. I've had lots of spam which Mailwasher has managed easily. Now, all of a sudden there is virtually no spam (good news)but nowt on the TT website about what has been removed. How do I know whether TT's filter has removed something it decides is spam but which, for me, is not?
Have you checked your Spam or Trash folder on the TT website - you normally have to open a message in this folder - then a "Not Spam" box should pop up for you. I hope I am on the correct track here for your query.

I've been using ThunderBird since the beginning of time and have loved the program. I do have an issue that has popped up that maybe you guys can help me out with. Ok, lets get to the issue.
Just recently I formatted my PC but wanted to keep my old mail. I had read that you can save the Mail folder located at :
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\
This will save all your old mail / Filter Setting / Subfolders / Ect. After you install Thunderbird you can just overwrite the default mail folder and replace it with the Mail Folder you save. Everything works fine and all my mail, Filters & Sub-Folders are just as they were before I formatted the PC.
The Problem:
It seems now everytime I get Spam, it moves it to the Junk folder just as I configured it to but for some reason it marks it as read during the move. Before it would be labeled as Unread after the move to the junk folder. From what I have heard some Spam is intelligent and can send a " I've been open " back to the sender via an HTML Link. I'm not sure if automatically marking it as read will do this. I never open spam, I just hit the Junk Button at the top and send it to my Junk Folder. Any ideas how to switch it back to it not showing as read.
I'm using ThunderBird ver. 1.5.0.2
Thanks guys........
Our secretary today told me that the Verizon rep she's been talking to for weeks has suddenly been getting bounce backs from our exchange server. In the bounceback it mentions the spam filter.
This only happens when he sends email from his iphone to our secretary. It doesn't happen when he emails me.
Odd...
Have them forward you a copy of the NDR and/or check the logs. It's the fastest and easiest way.
I use outlook express as my mail client at home and my inbox is becoming overrun with spam about viagra and penis enlargement pills. I'm so freakin sick of it I just want to strangle the bastards wasting my time. Any recommendations on something that works well w/ Outlook Express?
The best stuff I've come across has been server side.
I use spam assassin, and it works fairly well.
There might be a stand alone application that can interface with OE, but I've never seen it.
Hi all
I've been using Spamihilator for some while now and I was wondering whether there are better ones out there.
Spam'tor used to filter out many spam emails and put them in the 'Training Area' but it's put nothing in there for a few weeks now.
This itsself is very unusual but, at the same time, I've noticed that I've not received several emails sent to me by known and trusted sources.
I've now lost confidence in Spam'tor and would like to use another recommended programme.
Thanks in advance,
Slime.
You can use GMail as a spam filter and retain your current email account, You configure gmail to fetch your email from your current provider and then get your email from GMail. Keep your existing SMTP settings and you'll still be able to send as your existing account. There directions on doing this on: http://www.computerhope.com/tips/tip133.htm. GMail's spam filtering is very effective.
1 more repliesI have been using Thunderbird for well over a year now and in general like it very much.
The problem I have is the spam filtering. It is only doing a so-so job.
I am not having any false positives but the adaptive filtering does not seem to detect 60% of the junk.
For example, I have been constantly marking as junk "Watch Replica Spam", but I keep getting five or more of this type of mail every day. If I could just filter out the word "replica", I could eliminate most junk of this type.
In addition much of the Vallium, Cialis and other unwanted "pharmaceutical" mail is not being filtered (although about half of it is being filtered).
To sum it all up, I am still getting much mail that is almost identical to mail I have previously marked as junk.
I believe I have set the Junk Mail control settings and adaptive filter properly. Is their anything else I can do?
Do you ‘create filter from message’ when you get these Replica emails? You probably know this already, but here’s the info’ just in case: select the message [don’t open it] and click on Message on the menu bar, click on ‘Create filter from message’ and enter the word replica or whatever you want – you can make two or more separate filters for the same message, to catch everything this pest sends you – then tell it where to put the message and mark it as Junk. That should send it straight to Junk or Trash, according to where you directed it when you set up T’bird.
I note that this received the PCA Gold award in the January 2004 edition.click hereHas anyone tried it yet, and if so, what is their opinion?.
I have used Inboxer for over three months as a test for some clients. It is a superb spam filter and learns very quickly. I have set it to check an account that is deliberately made available to advertising and a few friends. In all the time on trial it has never sent a serious email straight to spam but holds them in a review file. Once the message has been allowed it learns immediately/ You can set Inboxer to delete spam automatically or let you review it. The only downside is that it will only work in Outlook not express. It now deletes all the spam/advertising without me reviewing any of it.G

I'd like a spam filter that works with AOL version 7 ( preferably UK version). I don't know how that differs from the USA version but I liked it better than the Australian version 7 so I installed UK, rather than continue with the OZ version.
The link below is a comprehensive review of 15 spam fighters that work on various ISP's and Operating systems. Only 2 work with AOL.
http://www.spamfilterreview.com/?engine=kanoodle!881&keyword=spam+stopper
The reviews may be of interest to MG users.
I had previously bought and tried MailWasher Pro (not reviewed here), but could not get it configured to work properly with AOL v7 UK despite many emails to and from MWP and much assistance from them. I bought it on the proviso that it worked. It didn't, they refunded my money, so no complaints there.
So, after all this, I am after a MG user that uses AOL and have found a program effective against spam. If it sends an "invalid address---not found" message back to the spammer so much the better. This was the prime reason I tried MWP.
If you have not had first hand experience with AOL please do not bother to reply as AOL is a special beast (not POP3, as I understand it).
Thanks, AOL users. Baz

More repliesMy email account is with a local ISP, ie. not one of the majors
like gmail or hotmail. I use Thunderbird on Linux as my email
client. The ISP uses Postini for email security.
I am being flooded by spam emails, which I suspect have the
same source. All are from hotmail addresses, with the sender
name a somewhat garbled combination of letters. The "to" address
does not appear to be my own, but I receive the emails anyway.
Since neither the "from" or "to" addresses are constant, I have
been unable to filter them out in either Postini or in Thunderbird.
I'm more than a novice but less than an expert, and I think I
understand that the sender address can be spoofed, tho I'm unclear
on how my own address can be spoofed such that I receive emails
that do not appear to be addressed to me.
Certainly my basic question is how can this happen and how can
I put a stop to it. Beyond that, what I'd really appreciate is a
pointer to some article, website, etc that would help me understand
the mechanics of this type of spamming, and the methods or options
to filter it out.

Hey guys,
As the network specialist/administrator here at my credit union, I have the responsibility of researching out the best corporate spam filter as we have been receiving increased complaints of users receiving spam. Several of us here use SpamBayes spam filter, but that is only client-side filtering. Instead of setting this up on every single computer we have (70+ right now, plus we are opening up a branch in the spring which will add about another 20, with other branches in the planning stages), I thought it best to go with a corporate spam filter that resides on our Exchange 2000 server, running on a Windows 2000 Server machine.
Of course, when I want to research something like that, one of the first things I think about is the [H]ardForum. I am assuming that some of you guys have experience with this, so I'm gonna ask for your opinions. What have you guys used for corporate spam filtering, how much does it cost, how does it perform, and why is it the best in your opinion?
Thanks in advance for your help...it is much appreciated!
Jeremy

Since Virgin Media moved me from ntlworld.com to virgin.net, many of my emails have been siphoned off by the spam filter. This means every day I have to access web-mail, and then the spam filter, in order to deal with emails that previously appeared in Outlook Express as expected. What can I do about this?
The usual way to deal with this (certainly in Google Mail, for instance) is to add the sender's address of the 'genuine' e-mails to the address book at Virgin's web mail service.

There seems to be an explosion of junk mail recently within our own ofice and that of clients to teh point where built in Junk Mai filters dont seem to be able to handle it anymore.
Can anyone recommend a Spam filter that is easy to setup, easy to use and most of all effective.
Open source would be nice but if it takes cold hard cash to get something that works then so be it.
Even tho I'm very careful who I give my email address to and frequenly scan my computer for spyware I'm still getting too much spam thro.
I've looked at the programmes available that will help to sort out the spam from my emails and found "JetMailMonitor' Cowan system. It gets a good write up, I'm wondering if anyone uses this programme and the usefulness of it.
Thanks.
First off, it's it says it's newsletters that you are subscribed to, at the bottom of each email there should be a unsubscribe link. Yes. I know you didn't subscribe to any of these probably, but your email gets signed up one way or another.
A solution:
Use 2+ emails. 1 as your primary email for friends, family, or business. The others for signing up with websites and registrations.
Hope I helped :-)

Please can any body recommend a free spam filter for my sister-in-law to use, like me she is NOT very techie so an easy to use one would be preferable, Many thanks for any replies I may receive, Brian.
try mailwasher ,it`s free just "google " for it.
3 more repliesCan anyone advise on a good software package to filter email and reduce spam, without blocking other legitimate mail? Needs to work with AOL.Thanks in advance for any help :-)
Many anti-spam programmes around, but most seem to only work for Outlook or Outlook Express. However, I found this:click hereIt is claimed to work with AOL 7.0 and 8.0.There is a 15 day free trial, so you could try it out.

Does not sound very good to me because even if it knows the email is spam it just moves it to your spam folder.
That means you had to download the spam still.
Better of with MailWasher so you can filter out the email at the server and bounce, delete the spam there so you only download good email so then your have no need of a spam folder because you never download any spam.
Anyone have a good FREE spam filter for Office 97?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew of some signup sites or such to completely blast an email account with spam.
I just set up [email protected] so I could train my thunderbird filters.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hello:
I am in need of a good, simple pop spam filter.
Here is the catch: This would be for a recently widowed person who does not know much about her computer(her husband took care of that stuff).
Ideally I would recommend going to Thunderbird and training her email box, but what I need is something that would filter most spam out on its own that can plug into outlook express or outlook.
I know there is no single silver bullet that would get rid of all the spam, but I'd like to be able to cut most of it out.
Thanks in advance
Greg
There are a few in the freeware section of this forum. Check my sig.If not to your liking try thisone
2 more repliesI bought this new spam filter, paid good money for it, and want to test it. Its a new email address and I can't tell if the filter works. Spam me as much as you can, and if I don't get anything I'll know it works. Don't hold back I really want to test this, and if the spam gets through I can just create a new address, so its no problem.
Heres the address, Thnks.

Enviorment is a small buisess with less than 20 email accounts with an exchange server running Server 2K3 and Exhcnge 2K3. I run Ninja as my exchange spam filter but we got Crushed over the past couple of days. So bad ninja almost choked..(I dont blame ninja, This is not some huge exchange server and getting tagged with 30K+ emails in a couple of hours put a toll on any small server). Our average is almost 1000 emails a day getting caught by our filter but by the end of this week we had gotten over 30K in one day. That number is going down and the situation is now under control however i was looking for a secondary solution that would filter traffic before it even got to my exchange.
Any suggestions on any products that may be out there? Does such a product even exsist?

Is there any spam filters for Thunderbird mail? All the ones I have found are for Outlook or Ourlook Express. Probably 85% of my mail is spam and I am tired of creating message filters for each one.
Always thought Thunderbird had its own good adaptive Spam Filter built in? ( dont use th eapp so not 100% sure its as good as the 3rd party ones available you already mentioned for OE )

Hi,i have a yahoo e-mail account that is getting close to 300 e-mails a day----270 of the 300 are spam.I have as many as possible on my "block addresses list" but they seem to keep rolling in.It`s like a snowball rolloing down a mountainside at this point------if i don`t figure a way to stop the spam,it will be a real problem---in fact it already is.
Is there a good free spam blocker available that will work with my yahoo e-mail to stop this spam problem?
Thanks for any information.
I have some questions about spam in emails.
What is the best program to use against spam via a pop email account? Best freeware one and best pay for one.
How do you stop gettings hundreds of emails in per day that are just plain junk? Got a client with this problem and I'm not very experienced when it comes to emails since I don't use email much. No viruses or spyware are on his system. We called her isp too and they said she had a virus and it wasnt thier problem and I checked her system and she had 0 viruses or spyware with the latest versions of AVG and spybot.
Best spam filtering software is hands down Norton AntiSpam. I have it and it works great. It integrates with Outlook 2000, XP, 2003, etc. Uses no resources, in fact you cant tell it's even installed except that it filters the spam. It is incredibly accurate. PC Magazine reviewed several spam applications...MacAfee, Norton, and some others. Norton won by a large margin.
The free ones they reviewed all seemed to perform poorly. Especially compared to Norton or even MacAffee's antispam software.
In september's edition of PC-Advisor, page 115 were details of how to set up a spam filter in O.E.6.X.I have tried to get this to work on 2 computers, one at work and mine at home, but despite following the instructions, mails which include the selected words in both the subject line and the message still get through to the inbox. What have I done/not done???Both computers are running I.E.6 and O.E.6, one runs on XP Pro, the other win. 98.
More repliesOn my 2006 version of Norton internet security I had the option to create an anti spam folder in outlook express. When I right clicked a spam message I was given the option to say "This is Spam" and all future messages were sent to the anti spam folder. I am now running Norton Internet security 2007 and cannot find this useful facility, any suggestions
you have to download it as an extra in nis2007. I did not think norton antispam was any good so did not down load it. its a free download with a few other extras from nortons web site.a freeware program called mailwasher is a bit better
1 more repliesI'm not very familiar with Outlook Express (I'm an Outlook 2003 person myself) so I was hoping someone on this forum can point me in the right direction...
Is there a spam filter available for Outlook 2003, preferably free/open source, as a friend of mine is getting an increasing amount of spam coming in to his mailbox?
Thanks.
He needs to use the web interface and notify the provider of the spam messages so they can upgrade their filters to stop it.
Other than that he needs to mark each message as Junk (Right Click on message) and it should send it to his Junk Mail Folder. At which point he will just have to empty that folder.
There is also this.
I'm getting more and more spam on Outlook after years of it being minimal and I can't find any filter. Anyone out there any suggestions?
Get the latest office updates first. Then there are many filtering softwares available out there. But they are not free. I would recommend mailwasher.
4 more repliesI subscribe to a legitimate weekly e-mail newsletter (WXP News).I've just changed my delivery address for this newsletter to my Google Mail address. On checking my Google Mail I noticed that the newsletter had gone straight into the spam folder, so I marked it as 'Not Spam'.Will Google Mail now 'remember' that this particular weekly newsletter isn't spam or will I have to move it out of the spam folder every week?
Have you added the sender to your contacts? This isnt 100% though. Setting up a filter may be another option
5 more repliesI use Thunderbird to read my AOL accounts. I've always been pretty satisfied with AOL's spam filter; even when it lets something through that's spam, I could let Thunderbird's spam filter catch it.
But what about the reverse problem? If see that AOL has marked something as Spam that I think is valuable, I have to log in to AOL's webmail site, go into the Spam folder, and mark the message as "Not Spam". Otherwise all similar mails in the future will be caught too.
Is there a way to use AOL's "Not Spam" button while still in Thunderbird?
I need your help to tackle a corrupt Council and the Microsoft Spam filter is the key to this.
Long story short. My Email address was blocked to Councillors, complaints departments and every department at a UK Council. This happened after I started contacting departments to object to a council application. I only found out because an employee told me they had stopped receiving Emails from that address. I also never received any acknowledgments from the Council that my Email address had been blocked.
Anyway I made a complaint and the council stated that the Microsoft Spam filter had blocked my email address and put my emails into quarantine and then deleted them 14 days later because I used prohibited words. So I provided them with all my Emails from that address so they could find the prohibited words.
Months pass by and now I'm informed that the Council has contacted Microsoft to find out how my Email Address became blocked.
The reality is that I know it was blocked by Council staff because I was disrupting a council planning application. I know they haven't found any prohibited words and to make matters worse they almost certainly blocked me when no Email was sent.
Please help me by providing me with information about the Microsoft spam filter and how plausible or in-plausible their excuse is? I need to send a well written technical insight into the Microsoft spam filter to the borough solicitor and then my local MP.

Does anyone know a good spam filter for Outlook? I downloaded a couple of them, but they cost $39. It seems like a lot to pay for a plug in to an existing application. But the free stuff I have looked at was lame.
I would like to have the ability to bounce a message as undeliverable, to appear to the spam sender as if my email is not valid. Also, it is nice to be able to flag which messages are spam and which are not, so the filter can learn what my valid messages look like.
Anyone have a cheap or free favorite?
Thanks in advance,

The above page has a free spam application. It has limitations on it such as only one e-mail account can be checked by the app. The reason for the limitation is the pay for version called 'Pro' is available.
I'm thinking of upgrading to Outlook 2003 (currently using Outlook 2000 under XP). The only reason for this upgrade would be that I've read that Microsoft has built in a fairly good spam filter.
However, someone just told me that the Outlook 2003 spam filter only works if you're using Outlook in conjunction with an Exchange email server. Our email is through our webhosting company (Verio) and therefore is POP type email.
Will the spam filter work with POP email? If so, how well does it work?
Thanks!
Not true. You do not need an Exchange sever for Outlook2003 to use it's built in spam filter.
Personally I use SpamBayes. It's free, very simple to use, and it pretty much catches all my spam. Much prefer the programs that integrate with Outlook since it it a lot easier to use.
I’m looking for a cheap solution to filter SPAM on a small network for a nonprofit organization.
They’re running Exchange 2003 on Windows Small Business Server 2003 with about 20 XP clients and Outlook 2007.
The current built in filter rules in Exchange do not catch the majority of SPMAs.
They’re getting on average 50 to 100 SPAM per day. Not all users are getting spammed so I’m not sure if a desktop solutions is suitable for that environment.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
If I define the ?To:? as my email address and use the ?IS NOT? on this To: address, then ask it to move that spam email to the Discard folder then it should work, BUT IT DOES NOT. It moves correctly addressed emails to the Discard folder.Could this be that the ?To:? email address is changed to my name by the sender when its sent. It gets the name from the Outlook Express (Version 5.5) address book.EXAMPLETo: [email protected]When I look at the incoming email it displays my name ? To:Fred BloggsIs this why the filter does not work?Any helpful ideas would be very much appreciated to reduce spam. Thanks Fred Bloggs, alias David.
I personally work it the other way round. That is anybody in my address book and a few others are moved into there own folder. I leave the spam in the Inbox or where ever and check it just in case. The trouble Spam changeds its headings to often to try and keep up with it.This is my way of beating Spam and has worked for the last 2 years.Hope this helps

I am having a horrific time with spam coming through Thunderbird. I have tried Thunderbirds filters without any luck. I see there are a number of highly rated spam filters eg: Spamfighter, Cloudmark, Mailwasher to name a few. I'll bet there is also freeware spam filters.
Can anyone suggest one they know works well? Free or buy I don't care.
Thanks
I paid for a Mailwasher lifetime license back in the day. Which I later learned was no longer 'lifetime'. When they went to an annual subscription I quit paying and went with Mailwasher free. All I lost were a few bells and whistles. I'm sure there are other things the 'Free Version' that may be missing compared to paid, but I didn't miss them.http://www.mailwasher.net/

We use GFI spam filtering, and a large quantity of spam is still getting through.
For a given word that has been flagged in GFI, some emails containing it are being blocked whereas others are getting through. There does not appear to be a consistent pattern. As a result of this, someof our users are getting large quantities of spam.
I have never used GFI before, and have been thrown in at the deep end, so I would be grateful if anyone had any thoughts or had experienced this themselves?

Like most, I've been inundated with spam recently. "Adding to Blocked senders list" doesn't help - I must have hundreds of these, and imagine they only serve to slow the system down. Can I configure Outlook so that an eMail is posted to my Inbox ONLY if my Inbox already contains mail from that sender? And divert all other mail to another folder that I can peruse at leisure. That way I could at least know anything in my Inbox was welcome.ThanksPhilip
click here for a guide to using Outlook spam filters; it will allow you to filter by address in your contact list.
3 more repliesHi All,
My spam seems to be increasing and I am considering using a spam filter program. There are a few on the market.
Spamilator, Mailwasher etc
Do they work? If so, any recommendations please?
Thanks!
I actually use gMail to process my spam.
A free gmail account has the ability to check and collect emails from a number of other POP3 based email servers and then organise and present them for reading, Gmail works with POP3 or IMAP (recommended for anyone who wishes to check from more than one device, and has Broadband Internet access).
Gmail's default spam filters are IMO at least as good as the specialist programs on sale and it also allows you simply add to the filters for your specific needs, (just click the mark as spam button, for anything that does not end up in the spam bin that you feel is spam).
Spam is automatically deleted from the spam bin after thirty days but I tend to check every few days just in-case anything has been incorrectly classed as spam (extremely rare in my experience)
You can also create rules to control anything that, although is not specifically spam, you wish to clear from your inbox but save to read later, (I use it to save away my regular informational emails that I have subscribed to
Hi All,Is there a Spam Filter that can filter Hotmail....I keep getting smut in my inbox. Preferably one that does not involve a third party knowing my hotmail password.thanksD.
Mailwasher - version two does, but it costs a few AUS dollars. Or if you can find a beta of version two around, it is still free. But they will need to know your password to log onto the a/c.
5 more repliesI am looking for the best exchange 2000 spam filter. This needs to be a server side app. I have been shying away from a lot of the ones i've found on the internet because they are all ranging about $40 per license. I don't want to spend a bundle since we will probably be upgrading our server to 2003 within the next year.
If anyone has any cheap solutions, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
We are using a Barracuda Spam Firewall. It is wonderful. It may be a bit more than you are looking for, but it works great! This way if you swap out your Exchange server, it isn't effected by that. Also if you have to take down your Exchange server for a while, it acts as a backup mail server and will hold everything till the Exchange server is back up and running.
I highly recommend them. LDAP lookups mean that your Exchange server isn't spending time dealing with messages that don't go to anyone, so it drops the load on the Exchange server. It clears out Viruses, spam, phishing attacks.
Can someone recommend one that actually works on android well?
thx
I never had any issues with Hotmail's spam filter until somewhere fall last year where they removed the "low" setting and now many of my valid emails end up in the Junk Email box.
I have sent complaints to MS about this but no answer nor solution.
Marking a sender as safe doesn't help. Emails keep ending up in the spam folder.
While searching I couldn't find anything about this, only people complaining the filter is not strict enough. But in my case it is way too strict.
Hope someone has a solution. Would upgrading to paid Hotmail help?
Hey Guys,
Long time lurker here...
I'm having issues with a specific domain. The company has about 15 e-mails that are all getting about 40-60 spam e-mails a day. I was wondering if there is a recommended program free or paid that you gurus can recommend me.
All computers are equipped with Avast but they are not the paid versions with no e-mail filtering options. We could switch over to a new AntiVirus program that has exceptional e-mail filtering embedded or a 3rd party stand alone software.
Thanks in advance.
Does their email server have any anti-spam solution such as SpamAssassin or similar? I prefer to filter at the server level if possible.
