Application Control - Settings

Question: Application Control - Settings

Hey,

which settings do you use if you configure application control? Is "automatic mode" really secure?

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: Application Control - Settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Looking for advice on how to find where the touch pad settings may be hidden on this laptop I'm working on? I've looked in the control panel and there is no icon for touch pad and I've looked in the mouse settings without finding any options to change the settings for the touch pad? The laptop is an acer Aspire 5520-5912 running Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Any ideas?

Answer:Can't find touch pad settings in Control Panel/Mouse settings anywhere?

Hi loki2007 Usually, Windows install it's own Microsoft Legacy Drivers for a touchpad on a laptop, and these drivers doesn't enable the "Advanced" settings that allows you to control the touchpad. In order to do that, you have to install the laptop touchpad drivers which will add that tab in the Mouse options.Download and install these drivers:http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/TouchPad/Touchpad_Synaptics_9.1.16_Vistax86.zip?acerid=633639058794305220&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%205520&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_4Let me know if they install or not.

Introduction
Corporate network security is one of the most pressing issues for companies today. Malicious programs can cause substantial harm to a business, and a firm?s reputation is not the least of its worries. Companies specializing in IT security offer a variety of costly solutions, although in many cases, installing these solutions can actually lead to a steep increase in network maintenance costs. However, traditional security solutions cannot always provide guaranteed protection against unknown threats ? especially when it comes to targeted attacks.

This article addresses an alternative approach to protecting corporate networks: the Whitelist Security Approach.

This approach continues the developments in launch control technologies (otherwise known as Application Control) which add Default Deny mode support and innovative new whitelisting technologies, or Dynamic Whitelist.

At Kaspersky Lab, we believe the Whitelist Security Approach is one of the key elements of protection for corporate networks of the future. Products that use this approach are capable not only of protecting a network against unknown threats but also offer netwo... Read more

.Conclusion

It?s brilliant ? but is it user-friendly?

The idea behind Default Deny is very simple and logical. However, until now this approach was focused exclusively on a very narrow target audience. This was primarily because of the technical challenges arising on the road toward developing a solution that would be appropriate for broad use, and without a number of critical limitations.

Dynamic Whitelist. Kaspersky Lab currently works with several hundred international partners and tens of millions of participants in the Kaspersky Security Network global data network, in addition to an extensive network of automated search agents. Combined, these components provide continuous updating of Kaspersky Lab?s dynamic knowledge bases, with an average of over one million new files per day.
The quality of Kaspersky Lab?s Dynamic Whitelist was proven in an independent test conducted by West Coast Labs. The study showed that Kaspersky Lab?s database contains data on 94% of all clean software released around the world.
It is necessary to carefully control all of the programs entered into the Dynamic Whitelist, and most importantly to keep its reputation up to date. A program classified as ?clean? today can, after more careful analysis, turn out to be a carrier of threatening malicious code t... Read more

Win 10 64 Pro Anniversary Build Latest Update
Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 Latest Update
No other RealTime security software.

My portable programs SecurMyBit, VidCoder, etc... were under "Low Restricted" in Application Control.
I move them to "Trusted" in AC.
After couple of days, the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".
When I run the programs, they appear under "Low Restricted" And I again move them to "Trusted" But after couple of days the same mentioned above i.e the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".

Is it a bug or bug on Win 10 64 or bug in KIS 2017 or ............?

Any info?

Any Kaspersky users experience the above?

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control

Yes, this happens & not only in 2017 but in earlier versions as well.

I experience it as well, but not quite often as you are. Mine comes when i am disconnected from internet for a while & then connect again, then (i guess) KSN checks the app control rules again & places them (apps) as described in the KSN rule-set.

The problem come from the setting 'Load rule for applications from KSN' in application control, which is enabled by default.

This shouldn't be a problem if you are using default settings (Auto-mode) as Low restricted is basically Trusted in auto-mode. But if you use interactive mode, this causes a lot of prompts which can be quite annoying.

If I enable TAM and allow a file to run (add an exception), I notice the file is added to the Low Restricted category on Application Control. Does this mean that not only does Kaspersky TAM act as a default deny, but also places exception unknowns with restricted rights in Application Control too? If so, pretty cool stuff.

Thanks!

Answer:Kaspersky TAM and Application Control?

Yes, TAM also is provided with white listing and KSN data to assign a trusted group for an unknown application:

How to enable or disable the Trusted Applications mode in Kaspersky Internet Security 2016

Anyway if You know that unknown application and trusts on it You may move it to Trusted group.

Advanced Control Enable Microsoft Catalogue Utilization what is this?
Also under OS Firewall there is "enable OS Firewall" and it is ticked, do I need this enabled?
Should I be sunning the OS firewall and ZoneAlarm?
Are all these enteries slowing down ZoneAlarm?

Answer:Zone Alarm- Application Control

What OS are you running; for Win7 and Win8/8.1 you are best to use the built in Windows firewall.
You should not run more than one firewall; therefore either the OS one or ZoneAlarm in your case.
As far as removing the multiple entries, I personally would not do so as there are various components to individual programs.
From: ZoneAlarm Forums :
"Enable Microsoft Catalog Utilization
When enabled, prevents alerts for programs that are cataloged by Windows as known and trustworthy. Enabled by default. (Depending on your settings, ZoneAlarm may still alert you about such programs if they attempt to act as a server outside your Trusted Zone.) "
If you decide to uninstall ZoneAlrm then ZoneAlarm Uninstall 12.0.118.000 Tool

If anybody knows of such a program please share,Thank you!

Answer:Per application volume control in WIndows XP

Unless the programs you're using have their own volume controls, this isn't possible, except as a master volume control which Windows already has.

Hi

I just wondered if anyone here had an idea of the best application control setting for kaspersky that offers the best protection?

Tony

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control Setting???

Hardening privilege control mode
Most of the widely used programs are automatically placed in the Trusted category, because they either have a digital signature of the manufacturer, or are included in the KSN Allow list. This allows toughening the restrictions for the other programs: they can be automatically moved in the High Restricted orUntrusted category. In the latter case, KES will automatically block the start of unknown programs that have no digital signature and for which there are no allowing rules within the policy. If a program necessary for work is blocked, you can configure an exclusion for it.Click to expand...

http://support.kaspersky.com/learning/courses/kl_102.98/chapter3.1/section2

Set to untrusted for any unsigned application instead of heuristics analyzer by default that chances are going to low restricted or high restricted which sometimes can execute the program in all matters.

Answer:VB 6 Database application login control

Create a form with two entry fields -- one for the user name and one for the password. Don't make it the startup form but instead show it from the Form_Load event procedure in your main form. Capture the user name and password and return it to the frmMain.Tag property. Once you're back to the main form, login in to the database using the supplied credentials.

I am trying to open the add/remove icon in control panel and keep receiving message fpqx.exe not found cannot open application. I tried opening several other icons on this particular computer in control panel and get the same message. The computer uses OSWindows 98.

Answer:application message in control panel

I've no idea what fpqx.exe is, can't find anything on google search about it . . .

but it sounds like a virus to me.

Make sure you've got the latest definitions for your A-V software
and run a full virus scan.
Better still, run an online scan at one of these places:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/

It sounds as though your registry has been modified so that *.cpl files open with fpqx.exe instead of rundll32.exe

Folder Options -> File Types tab -> CPL (Control Panel Extension)

I'm not sure what the default command line is in Win98, but in WinXP it's:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %1,%*

Hopefully, a Win98 user will come along and tell you what the correct Win98 command line is. Then you can edit the entry yourself and the problem will be fixed

Full question: How to add a new/duplicate volume control in the 'Volume mixer' (aka application specific volume control) in windows 7? specifically, how to add another duplicate chrome to control different sounds in different tabs.

example: opening 2 tabs: 1 youtube, 1 hulu in chrome and having two 'Google Chrome' applications in volume control so I can mute one and keep the other one still playing with sound.

I've done it before, but I'm not sure HOW I did it, I just know its possible. Sometimes when i open another video it just automatically does it, and sometimes it doesn't.

I just want to know if there's a specific way to do it, unless its just a bug then I guess I'm just screwed and have to install another chrome.

Answer:how to duplicate application in volume control

Don't think there's a way to 'duplicate' the volume controls. Sometimes when you mute videos and start another 1, the browser saves the setting so the 2nd stream auto mutes, may be this what you did?

You can also check out this addon Flashblock, it blocks the (flash) content from automatically streaming.

I am trying to provide an interface to control an application I created (3 perl processes).

I can start them from batch file (start /B), but once I do that I don't know how to identify them to either verify they are running or terminate them (killtask - but it wants PID or image, which in my case is perl - not well qualified enough to go killing processes)

Is there a way that I can start processes, verify they are running and terminate them from batch files?

Answer:Automated control of application tasks

There is probably a perl process that can handle this, but I have no idea if there is or how to call it.

Everytime I start my PC this message pops up

I always click Make Trusted so that it will move it to the trusted group but it just keeps on popping up!

It also tends to pop up when I am watching TV via Media Centre and there are the odd occassions when others pop up ie Windows Search, msn etc.

I assume it is not being moved into the trusted group (otherwise it wouldnt continue to keep popping up every hour or so) but I am not sure how to do this manually.

To be honest, I am not even sure what this application is!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to help someone with a Win XP computer. They are trying to set it up for basic internet/skype functionality but also wants parental controls in place. She uses FireFox and from my preliminary research there appears to be no built in parental control options. It looks like there are quite a few extensions available to accomplish this but i think the extensions can be easily removed/disabled by any user (without Administrator control). I was wondering what steps i could take on XP to require the Admin's approval to remove/disable extensions in FF or to uninstall FF or other applications.

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control - KIS 2017 bug?

I am trying to set my monitor's screen give accurate renditions of my pictures. I use Quick Gamma to set gamma. When doing this I can use either Nvidia's controls or windows controls (right click desktop>Nvidia Control Panel. When using Nvidia's Control Panel, there are two choices: Use other applications control color settings or Use Nvidia settings.

First question: Am I correct in assuming that the former setting is Windows?

I always check the button to use Nvidia settings (and then Apply>OK), but when I go back to this screen at a later time, the Other applications control color settings is always selected. How come? I'd like to default to Nvidia.

Answer:Nvidia color control vs Windows color control settings?

Hi, have you found a solution to your problem?
I'm having the same issues and its just annoying going to nvidia everytime i reboot to put those settings back in.

Hello there, I am in need of some help. I recently cleaned out some unneeded applications on my control panel, and restarted my computer, but now I've lost my volume control/ dimmer control. There use to be a little black box that would pop up whenever i increased or decreased my volume or dimmer, but now its gone. I would like to have that back. I don't remember the application i deleted. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:Need help, deleted application, and now no volume or dimmer control.

There's proprietary software that provides this functionality. You may need to scour Lenovo's website for downloads of this nature, or contact them directly to see if they can provide you with a download. Or if the laptop came with backups of this kind where you can install the various software from CDs, then start looking.

Application control is a crucial line of defense for protecting enterprises given today?s threat landscape, and it has an inherent advantage over traditional antivirus solutions. Specifically, application control flips the model from one where all applications are assumed trustworthy by default to one where applications must earn trust in order to run. Many organizations, like the Australian Signals Directorate, understand this and frequently cite application control as one of the most effective means for addressing the threat of executable file-based malware (.exe, .dll, etc.).

While most customers inherently understand the value of application control, the reality is that few customers have been able to employ application control solutions in a manageable way. Consequently, adoption of application control solutions is low. In fact, we estimate that only about 20% of our customers are using any type of application control technology; in many cases these customers use it only on a subset of devices because of the difficulty of creating and maintaining a comprehensive Allow/Deny list. With Windows 10, version 1709, also known as the Fall Creators Update we think we have changed that, and now have a solution that is a viable option for most of our customers to adopt and deploy across nearly all of their devices.

I know that the setting "allow application to take exclusive control of this device" can be changed by going to the properties of the playback/recording device and unchecking the box, but is there a way to change this setting via the registry
or a GPO (for large-scale managed changes)?

Answer:Allow Application To Take Exclusive Control Of This Device via Registry

Hi,
I have tried to determine the registry changes when clear/select the option, and the result here seems this action mostly related with the device drivers, couldn't find out any generic registry controlling this device related behavior.
So back to your question, there seems to be no way to change this for large-scale managed.

I run a lot of applications that transfer data over the internet and lately I've been wondering if there's such a thing as an application that will "dynamically control my bandwidth?" By this I mean that I'd be able to manually set how much bandwidth a particular application is allotted. This would give me greater control over transfers and would allow me to place a higher priority on transfers that are more important than others. A tool that could do this for me would be very useful.

Any suggestions? TIA.

Theoretically speaking, if different types of malware files where to penetrate past Kapsersky's protection and get placed into "Low Restricted", how much damage is possible under default settings?

Answer:Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

Theoretically speaking, damage same as trusted group. Low restricted is basically trusted group in default settings (Automatic mode). Application control is for interactive mode, in which the prompts gets issued, then Low restricted is useful as much as the user knows.

Now that Bitdefender announced there Application Control Whitelisting feature for the business solutions, do you think it is necessary to implement it in the home products?

What is your opinion about Application Control / Whitelisting and will it become an important layer of defense in the future?

"With more than 450,000 unique malware samples a day, mostly targeted at infrastructure or departments that play key roles inside the organization, the Application Control Whitelisting technology can allow IT managers to keep all threats at bay by default-denying the execution of unknown software."

You can read the full article here.

Answer:Bitdefender - Application Control Whitelisting for Home users - Need it?

It would never be a bad decision to integrate this into their home products. If it is provided as an option, the users that want it have the ability use it while the others just keep it disabled. Panda has a similar application control too in their products and I'm really a fan of it. In their products it's also disabled by default. You can easily control which executables run and you prevent that malicious applications can sneaky launch and infect your system. Of course this is something not every user wants to do. I can assume that the average 'not so technical minded' home user wouldn't be happy to need to allow each new executable that launches on your computer, but personally I really like this approach. Also if they make it 'self learning' that already earlier allowed exe's can start without warning, it's more comfortable to use it. You keep full control and prevent even the launch of malicious exe's where the AV doesn't have signatures for. It probably wouldn't become an important layer for the average user, but if you want full control, it's really an interesting feature for them to implement. The best antivirus is still the human brain and the application control makes it a bit easier to keep control of the running processes on your machine.

I just purchased two HIS HD 5670 video cards and installed the hardware and drivers with no problems. Where I am getting a problem is with the Catalyst Control Center. It will not open. Every time I try to open it, I immediately get a windows error which says Catalyst Control Centre: Host has stopped working. I've tried uninstalling every piece of ATI software on my computer, re-installing, different versions of the software, etc. Nothing fixes this issue. My graphics work just fine, but I cannot get in to change the settings or turn on Crossfire. It is very frustrating and I have tried everything I can think of short of re-installing windows. Hello,

Problem: When I right-click on my desktop and select "nvidia control panel", I get an error that says "nvidia control panel application, 4.4.730.0 has stopped working". The log file simply states the executable for this program crashed and gives no additional information.

I had been running the 296.10 driver on my machine with no problems. I upgraded the driver to 301.42. I had no problems for about a month and don't currently believe the driver version is related to the problem. The only change I made prior to this issue coming up, I installed Leisure Suit Larry which was speced for XP. The install may or may not be related, I can't think of how it would be.

Thus far, I've tried the below steps to resolve the issue with no luck:

-Installed 296.10 driver using "Clean Install" option.
-Installed 301.42 driver using "Clean Install" option.
-Uninstalled nvidia driver using Revo Uninstalled, then performed a "Clean" install, tried this with both 296 and 301 versions.
-Utilized Driver Cleaner Pro, followed by Revo Uninstaller to erase old GBU drivers and Physicx Drivers. Reinstalled 301.42. Restarted system. I was able to access the Nvidia Control Panel after the restart. I restarted a second time, and the same error this post is about occurred again. The error continues.

The only thing I can think of is to uninstall every single item marked 'nvidia', but I feel like that probably wouldn't... Read more

Answer:Solved: nvidia control panel application, 4.4.730.0 has stopped working

I found a guide, that when followed, corrected the problem I was having. http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1174372&mpage=1

The key differences I noticed between what I was doing and what I should have been doing are as follows:

-Should have only been using default uninstaller application. Not Revo or driver sweeper.
-I should have been deleting every single item marked nvidia from my computer, except of course my mobo drivers and Raid management software.
-I needed to disable the function in windows that automatically downloads drivers from win update
-I should have let win7 load the default VGA driver, then restart without clicking a single other thing and finally installing the new driver from EVGA and then restarting again without touching anything else.

Read up the article if you have any more difficulties.

It can't have escaped people's attention that many programs opt to replace the conventional window title bar and borders with their own style. This makes the programs appear much more uniform across themselves; but ruins the flow of the rest of the UI- especially when using third-party msstyles. Is it at all possible to disable their ability to do this; forcing a Windows controlled titlebar and border on these programs. The sort of program I'm talking about is Windows Live Messenger (I think; I haven't used it for a long while), Spotify, Steam, Tune-Up Utilities, etc. I know it's probably more a matter of how these programs are written, but if it's possible to at least add a correct titlebar and border I'd love to know.

Cheers,
Dean

Answer:[SOLVED] Disable application's control over the title bar and window borders?

Hi themoodude,

Such applications are made to specifically have their own GUI. You will not be able to change it's appearance without changing its source code, which is going to be a problem. You could request to their support/development team to add it as an extra feature, other than that you can not change it.

Greetings,
We applied some UAC settings via Group Policy to all Windows 7 machines. Now some old applications are throwing up a prompt and the users normal credentials wont run the app. The point is that the app DID NOT require admin privileges before we applied
the settings. The users were able to launch the app without prompts and run it successfully.
Does anyone know which security or UAC setting may be causing this? Remember that the apps ran perfectly well before these settings were applied  without an administrative account.

I am using a custom windows 7 theme that uses my preferred combination of window color choices etc.

However, this color scheme does become an inconvenience when I am working in certain applications like Autodesk and Photoshop as it makes their respective UI's very obscure.

Is there a way to exempt certain applications from personalization settings?

Welcome to the Seven Forums
You are going to get that with a custom theme and some programs look just fine while others do not. You will need to either find a new custom theme or switch to the default Aero theme when using those programs.

Hello, I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data.

My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives).

My query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.

I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily).

I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list.

Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Thanks.

Answer:Application data/settings backup

If you need to backup Photoshop, you need to find it's directory (probably under Adobe), and for Word it's probably under Microsoft or Office. Another option is to simply backup the entire AppData folder, that way you can't miss anything.

If you're talking about a large-scale backup for your whole system, you will probably want to backup drivers as well (you only need to back these up once, all the drivers are installed in C:\swsetup, but I prefer just saving the installer files).

I reinstalled my OS multiple times, with my personal data on another drive. What I backed up from my C drive was:

Select folders from AppData (only for programs' settings that I wanted to backup)Fonts that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Fonts)Themes that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes)Custom Power Plans (exported/imported through powercfg.exe in command prompt)Start Menu folder, for lots of links I created (AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Private Profile, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Public Profile)Certain folders in Program Files of older programs that I run as Administrator for compatibility purposes (programs that need Administrator privileges to save stuff in Program Files)I did not backup the registry in anyway, because the registry changes I made were saved as .reg files. Other registry changes are made while installing programs (which after a clean install will be done anyway)
What you think is vital to backup depends on your s... Read more

Dear forumers,

I have an issue with a non-unicode program. I want to learn to type the Russian standard keyboard layout (ЙЦУКЕН) so have an application which teaches me called Anykey 1.02 Demo. The problem is that this is not a fully unicode application and since my system is not set to russian at Control Panel -> Regional Settings -> Advanced tab, Anykey won't display cyrillic letters correctly, it shows questionmarks instead. Of course, it'd be simple to just set up the system run non-unicode applications in Russian, but it also messes up everything (another non-unicode apps). It's not really comfortable to restart the system every time I want to practice by Anykey, so I'm asking if there's any way to run an application (only one, separately from the other) with different non-unicode settings (eg. a command or *.manifest file or sg.)?

Thanks for your help

The SID No. is S-1-5-21-823518204-842925246-1343024091-1000 (All Users?). Only this drive has the displayed SID since a reformat and reinstall of Windows 2000 Pro on my master drive (c:\). The slave drive was present on this system under the previous 2000 installation before format. Is this normal? Also is it safe to delete this users permission for my slave drive?

Answer:SID Reg key within Access Control Settings (W2K)

After readin a few articles on it... I believe its not a problem. A security identifier (SID) is a unique value of variable length that is used to identify a security principal or security group in Windows 2000 click hereIts part of the Windows 2000 NTFS File Encryption, and Windows NT and Windows 2000 Protected Storage etcclick here If its not a problem it may be best to leave it. But I am willing to stand corrected on this.

Answer:How To Control The Start up Settings????

You can always go into each of those applications themselves and set them not to startup when windows starts.

Otherwise go to

Start-Run

and type in "msconfig"

Under the "startup" tab you can disable startup items.

When I set up my network settings to automatically connect to my home network it changes back to manually connect when I reboot. Help?

Answer:control panel changes settings

If you log in as administrator, try setting up a user account and log in that way. I have heard that it will do that if you're logged in as admin.

I've been getting this nagging message whenever I boot windows.  Tried uninstalling and re-installing the driver and ATI software from Lenovo's site but the problem persists.  I can produce the message at anytime by running "ATI Restart Runtime".  Someone please tell me how to fix this, it's really annoying.

When installing applications they appear to install correctly. An icon is created on the desktop and I can access the program.

In control panel under programs and features... the application is not showing up. I cannot uninstall the programs, because they aren't showing in programs and features to uninstall.

Yes, workarounds can be used to delete the program, but there is something wrong. The programs are not installing properly.

I ran sfc/ scannow as admin no problems indicated
After a couple hours messing with this:

Thought I should add this... When I right click on the installer/setup exe file and select to run as administrator the installer works and does show up in programs and features... Also, I can delete the program as well from programs and features.

I have never had to do this before even though I am admin...(in name mostly) unless I am willing to allow more vulnerability to my system by turning on all the time. Still having to run as admin does seem a bit much for installing programs. The worst part...the installer will run, installs the program, yet leaves off the ability to uninstall or change in the programs and features page of control panel

Answer:application installed doesn't show control panel - programs & features

Have a look at this MS website & see if there is anything there to help you. There are some links you can follow & there is a "fixit" there as well in one of those links.
Injudicious & over use of registry cleaners is one of the causes.

The DistributedCom error message appears in Event Viewer on ALL my personal computers only the CLSID, APPID and NT SIDs change.

I know the CLSID and APPID, how can I identify the software these numbers represent?
I know authority to launch the service for user S-1-5-18 has not been granted, who is S-1-5-18?
I wonder how to use the Component Services Admin tool to grant local launch permission, assuming launch is desirable.

An Ontario Housing site will not allow me to log in. It requires the application number (which I have) and my password (which I have lost). Neither "forgot your password?" or "Log In" are clickable and
a popup notifies me that I need: IE 5 or above (I have 10); pop-ups enabled (I have allowed this); Active Scripting enabled (Options > Security > Custom > Scripting > Active scripting > Enable) and cookies enabled (I tried both Accept All and Medium).

Tried Firefox -same problem as IE.

What else can I try?

edit: I have IE 11, not 10.

Answer:can't access important online application despite settings - IE 10

Hi,
This is usually a sign the site does not recognize ie10 using compatibility view,
The easiest is to notice if you see the Broken page icon the address bar is Blue which means it's activated,
Gray is not activated,

Otherwise to force a change hit the F12 key click on Browser mode and switch to ie10,
The page will auto refresh after,

I have a problem in that a few applications arent remebering their settings each time I restart my pc (win xp pro sp2). For instance, in outlook i went into email account settings and selected to leave email on the server. I go back after a reboot and see that it is no longer set. Also, i had set winamp to dock in minimised mode to top of the screen but when i reboot it appears undocked half way down the screen. Anyone any ideas why? I'm suspicious there is one windows settings file for all apps that should be saving these settings but isn't doing its job?

Answer:Application settings aren't saving on restart

No ideas :(But this will bump it back to the top of the list at least

Hi good day!

I'm having a problem with my OS today,

I can't access some settings on control panel,
nothing happens whenever I clicked those icons inside the red box (as shown in the image).

I already tried accessing the Hidden Administrator account, but still can't access those settings.
I tried doing sfc /scannow, but "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation".
I also tried to system restore but its not always succesful.

Hope you can help me.
Thanks!

Have you tried system restore?

My little brother has completely messed things up on his netbook. It has Windows 7 Starter on it. The sound doesn't work, and it doesn't give me a option to change it. Another thing is, it doesn't let me change any program ideas. If I go on to uninstall a program it won't let me press uninstall, or if I try to delete a user, it won't open up the program to change it.
I've tried to Restore it, but it says there's no restore points, which I know there are.
* Also, the programs like 'Windows Update' and 'Default Programs' have the icon saying they're not installed, and they can't find them.

Answer:Control Panel Can't Change Settings

Try starting the netbook in Safe Mode through advanced boot options. See if you can access control panel, restore points, etc. (Heed the warnings and tips for restore points.)

Advanced Boot Options

System Restore

If that doesn't work you might consider resetting to factory specs. I believe this should work: Turn the netbook off. Press and hold "0" (zero) key on the keyboard and then power on the machine. Keep holding down the zero key until, hopefully, the Toshiba HDD Recovery screen appears. You should be able to select Restore Original Factory Image. Follow the prompts and heed the warning that everything will be erased.

So recently today I got an issue that came up. I am the only admin and only user on the PC.

While I was wanting to change my audio device I got a message that read "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

It also is making it so I can't open control panel, settings at all, and many other apps that are pretty important. Anything branching off from Control Panel and/or Settings is also locked up or just won't open.

When I open settings it just instantly closes with no error message. Control Panel and the Audio Settings give the error box that I put below

Error message box here.

I'm not sure what is going on and I tried looking into it and nothing was helping. Any ideas?
Also here is the policies (I'm sure you will end up needing it XD)

Hello, I've searched all over the internet and can't seem to find some info. Please help :)

I am running on Windows XP on a Dell desktop using SoundMax Digital Audio.

I read somewhere that having the volume control bars (volume control, wave, etc) adjusted wrong can ruin your sound quality (i listen to a lot of music) and somewhere along the line I have adjusted it without knowing it could be ruining my sound quality.

What is the correct/default settings for these scroll bars? I can't find what they should be at anywhere!

Thank you

Answer:Default Volume Control Settings?

I haven't adjusted mine so this is what the defaults look like

Hi,

I cannot find any parental control settings for a user account I have created for my young child.

I have read a number of blogs as well as Microsoft's windows 10 help site, and it seems the options just aren't there.

I'm setting all this up from the administrator account, so that shouldn't be the problem.

For example, when I follow Microsoft's instructions, I do not see the option "Set up parental controls for any user".

What am I missing? Is there a way I can get to a parental control window by for example executing a command in cmd or similar?

If it makes a difference, none of the accounts on my PC have an associated Microsoft account - and I'd really prefer not to make one unless it really is necessary.

(As for the parental controls I'd like to establish, my child is 5 years old, so I'll probably have to install extra software so he can't accidentally delete important files if he accidentally ends up in windows explorer and gets delete-key-happy, unless windows has settings for that too. But as a stop-gap measure, anything windows 10 has out-of-the-box would be great)

Thanks

Answer:Cannot find any parental control settings

Hello Jodes, and welcome to Ten Forums.

In Windows 10, Parental Controls is not handled through Family settings (aka: Family Safety).

Unfortunately, you would need to add a child account that requires using a Microsoft account. This is so that you can also manage the child account online.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5...dows-10-a.html

You can then make changes to the settings to restrict the child account how you like.

Is there a path from the settings icon in the startbar to the sound control which is in Control Panel > All Control Panel Items?

I'm finding that I'm having to build my own Settings control, which contains the settings that I can't find in the standard Settings control!
