Verify Apps: Protection against Potentially Harmful Apps (Google Android Security)

Question: Verify Apps: Protection against Potentially Harmful Apps (Google Android Security)

Source: Why Android malware scares are almost never as bad as they seem
On Android, it's split between the OS and Play Services.
Google Play Services is a system-level app, which is updated in the background by Google on every Android phone going back to 2010's Gingerbread release. As well as providing APIs that let developers interact with Google services, and porting many features back to older versions of Android, Play Services has an important role in Android security.Click to expand...

Google Android Security: Shielding you from Potentially Harmful Applications
Earlier this month, we shared an overview of the ways we keep you safe, on Google and on the web, more broadly. Today, we wanted to specifically focus on one element of Android security?Potentially Harmful Applications?highlighting fraudsters? common tactics, and how we shield you from these threats.

?Potentially Harmful Applications,? or PHAs, are Android applications that could harm you or your device, or do something unintended with the data on your device. Some examples of PHA badness include:

Backdoors: Apps that let hackers control your device, giving them unauthorized access to your data.

Billing fraud: Apps that charge you in an intentionally misleading way, like premium SMS scams or call scams.

Spyware: Apps that collect personal information from your device without consent

Hostile Downloads: Apps that download harmful programs, often through bundling with another program

Trojan Apps: Apps that appear benign (e.g., a game that claims only to be a game) but actually perform undesirable actions.

Verify Apps is a cloud-based service that proactively checks every application prior to install to determine if the application is potentially harmful, and subsequently rechecks devices regularly to help ensure they?re safe. Verify Apps checks more than 6 billion installed applications and scans around 400 million devices per day. If Verify Apps detects a PHA before you install it or on your device if, it will prompt you to remove the app immediately.

Sometimes, Verify Apps will remove an application without requiring you to confirm the removal. This is an action we?ll take very rarely, but if a PHA is purely harmful, has no possible benefit to users, or is impossible for you to remove on your own, we?ll zap it automatically.Click to expand...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Google Android Security: How we stop fraudulent apps from holding you ransom
Recently we shared our 2016 Android Security Year in Review, which looks at how we protect Android users and their data. Today, we're taking a closer look at how we shield people from a rare?but particularly disruptive?potentially harmful app (PHA) known as ransomware. We?ve long had protections from ransomware in Android, and we added new ones in Nougat as well.

Ransomware is a type of app that restricts access to your device until a sum of money is paid. Ransomware usually presents itself in one of two forms: apps that restrict access to your device and then demand payment to regain access to the device, or apps that encrypt data on the device?s external storage (such as an SD card) and then demand payment to decrypt your data. To make the scam more convincing, fraudsters sometimes pretend to be from a credible law enforcement agency and accuse you of doing something illegal so you?re more likely to pay.Click to expand...

Safety blinders: Apps can no longer see which other apps are active. That means scammy ones can?t see what other apps are doing?and can?t inform their attacks based on activity.

Even stronger locks: If you set a lockscreen PIN prior to installing ransomware, ransomware can?t misuse your device?s permissions to change your PIN and lock you out.

Whacking clickjacking: ?Clickjacking? tricks people into clicking something, often by obscuring permission dialogs behind other windows. You?re now protected from ransomware attacks that use this tactic to sneakily gain control of a device.

Just bought a new android phone, Sony Ericsson xperia w8...

Do i need a security app like android antivirus? or just use the phone as it is...

This question is not just for me to all everybody else also....

Answer:Does Android need security Apps?

No.

Normally I don't say to rely on Common sense but in this case it's enough. Phones don't have the resources for bulky AV's and the Android OS is fairly secure (Sandboxing and the Java VM) it's just socially engineered malware to look out for.

Only download applications that have "high reputation" ie: lots of downloads and lots of good comments. Check what the application has access to (it says so before you download) and ask yourself "Why does this application need so many rights?" if it's suspicious.

Android is secure. It's just dangerous because Google's being incredibly thick about their market place regulations.

When it comes to information about computer security, few sources are as definitive as AV-Comparatives, an Austrian non-profit that focuses on researching anti-virus software. Recently, they released one of the first reports ever to focus on Android security apps.
The report reviews protection from BlackBelt, BullGuard, ESET, F-Secure, Kaspersky, McAfee, Trend Micro, VIPRE and Webroot. It?s not a malware detection report, which means it does not include in-depth research into malware detection rates, though some basic tests were conducted. All apps besides Trend Micro Mobile Security, which failed to detect a specific group of samples, passed with flying colors.
Flaws were found elsewhere, however. AV-Comparatives noted that although all of these apps supposedly have the ability to wipe data remotely (in the event of a phone being stolen), none of them managed to irretrievably remove information. According to the report, ?in all cases it was possible to recover photos, music, documents and so on from the external storage card, even using a free program.?
Obviously, that?s a serious issue, and one that developers need to address. Most security apps claim the ability to wipe data remotely as an important feature. If it doesn?t work properly, users could be purchasing a false sense of security.
AV-Comparatives? full report is 48 pages long, so go check it out if you?re interested in Android security. Ultimately, the report finds that no particular app is a stand-out vict... Read more

I installed many apps locker they all work fine but I can still access apps from the all apps list.

Answer:My apps locker work fine but apps can be accessed from the all apps list, how can I prevent this?

Yes. There is no such thing as a real app locker app in Windows Phones. This is because third party apps are not allowed to interact or interfere with other third party apps due to Windows Phone Sandboxing technology.
If the developer was careful with his app, he or she would have indicated the limitations of the "app locker" he created in the app description. Otherwise, if there is no such disclaimer about the limitations of the app in the app description, the user is encouraged to report the app to Microsoft as a fraudulent or misleading app.

The primary symptoms are listed in the title. By "Security apps", I mean any anti-malware programs that I attempt to run outside of safe mode. The programs WILL operate in safe mode.

Even in safe mode, "iexplore.exe" will open without my input and keep re-opening after being closed through task manager.

Google searches are hijacked in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. I suspect that it has to do with the Conduit Toolbar, which I never knowingly installed but that appears to be installed anyway.

As to the diagnostic tools I was directed to use:

Last night my Lumia 925 randomly locked up (which it seems to do quite often) so I did a soft reset and then noticed a bunch of problems.
First I noticed a bunch of my app tiles were blank or only displaying the app name. That happens from time to time when apps are updated or decide to lose track of the day. So I tried to go in and refresh them. But a lot of them wouldn't open. Others will open but crash immediately, and others still will open and display their info but won't update their live tiles. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of them but it has had no effect.
In addition to apps not behaving, various settings windows won't open. I thought maybe my phone updated and the update was buggy, but I can't check because Extras+Info crashes before opening.
Also, in my app list the first 4 apps are things I did not install, and don't look normal. @{Miscrosoft.BingTranslate, @{Microsoft.MSBatterySaver, @{Microsoft.MSCalendar, and @{Microsoft.MSPodcast. Pretty sure none of those are supposed to be displaying that way.
I didn't attempt to install anything. I've been running 8.1. I don't know if there was an update pushed out last night that I didn't notice installing.
But my phone isn't working and I am frustrated.
Anyone know what's wrong or have suggestions?

Today i will give you some info about the two most used files for checkin MD5, MD4 and CRC32 checksums(hashes). As you might know the leaked builds for Windows 7 are infected with Trojans and malwares and it becomes necessary to check the MD5 check sums before downloading the torrent. So i give you two apps to choose from. One is ?MD5 Checker? and the other is ?Marixio File Checksum verifier?. MD5 Check
MD5 Check is a small tool that will help you create and check MD5 checksums. An MD5 checksum (hash) is usually displayed as 32 hexadecimal characters, one for each 4 bits of the checksum. With MD5 Check you will be able to verify the data integrity and authenticity of any file and compare the output data with any given one.You can download it here. Marixio File Checksum verifier
Marxio File Checksum Verifier is a small portable tool which can help you in calculating and also verifying Checksum like CRC32, MD5 & MD4 hash etc. Some of the supported checksum formats are CRC32, MD4, MD5, SHA1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512.You can download Marxio File Checksum Verifier here.

Answer:android apps

If it's running Android 1.5, the market isn't available on it. Go to the Pandigital website to see what applications, features, and updates are available for your particular model.

Unfortunately, manufacturers of these cheap devices have, in many cases, seriously misled buyers into thinking they're getting a fully functional Android tablet by advertising that they run Android. The truth is that there are many versions of Android which do not all offer the same features. In some cases, devices run a customized version of Android. It's an open source operating system, and distributions can be altered which means they offer different features and functionality.

Google?s convergence of Chrome and Android is taking a big step forward this week. After launching a limited App Runtime for Chrome (ARC) back in September, Google is expanding its beta project to allow Android apps to run on Windows, OS X, and Linux. It?s an early experiment designed primarily for developers, but anyone can now download an APK of an existing Android app and launch it on a Windows / Linux PC, Mac, or Chromebook.

You simply need to download the ARC Welder app (based on Android 4.4) and obtain APKs from Google?s Play Store.

I work from home. If you haven't done this before, the only way describe working from home to those that don't. This of it like I'm doing a job like a carpenter, plumber, electricians work. You have one job you're working now as a sub contractor building a home from 9-5, mean while you make really good money doing emergency work during off hours. Basically even though you are working right this minute, you're always looking for another job so as to keep the money flowing. And that's where I'm at now.

That's where I am not. I just finished a 6 week long project, I'm doing misc work in the mean time and I need a new contract job. I found one but I need help with it. This job I wish to do is mean to work on a smart phone using android or ios. Either I need to find a good shell program so I can install and run the android app required to do the work. I know I seen one before, but I can't find it now. The other choice is to get VMware and then install android that way. I'd like to avoid that, since Vm is somewhat of a resource hog, slow my system down. Suggestions???

Answer:How would you go about being able to run Android apps from Windows 10?

I'm not into VMs yet but could suggest an inexpensive 7", 8" or 10" Android tablet, many department stores carry them at about $75 for 7" to $180 for 10", my wife got me a 7", fun to play with.

Got Windows 8 last week and love it after saying for so long that i would not buy it but after looking at the App store could it grow in time to as big as Android?

Shame that there is not the Real BBC News App but am pleased so far with all the Apps that Windows 8 have.

Answer:Windows Apps could they be as many as Android?

I think it will grow considerably in near future. Ms has just released help for programmers for Apps and future windows will relay on Apps more and more with "unified" OS that will allow same Apps to work same on different devices. Those are only plans for now. When in next iteration of Windows comes and maybe even before, plans are for Apps to be able to have resizable windows and true multitasking, only than we'll see some really useful Apps from the store and even independent ones. To tell you frankly I didn't find any really useful App yet, at least as not as good as tons of free desktop programs of same genres.

You might want to sit down for this one, folks. In addition to letting developers easily port their Android apps to Windows universal apps, Microsoft is likewise offering a similar capability for iOS apps for iPhone and iPad. And the way this happens is via a secret new project that’s been in the works for years. The best bit? You may already be running the first app ported from iOS.

I know. It’s crazy. But it’s true.

“This capability has been available for some time,” Microsoft executive vice president Terry Myerson told me this week in San Francisco. “King used it to bring Candy Crush Saga Windows Phone in late 2014. And that game has over 40,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.5.”Click to expand...

I have an Icon, and I L.O.V.E. the windows phone experience (not the Verizon experience, though! GRRR!) but there are a couple of apps that are only available in either iTunes or the Google Play store that I really need.
The first is my bank, it's a small town bank and I want to be able to use their actual app so that I can use the "mobile deposit" feature now that we live 50 miles from the nearest branch (no, we're not interested in changing banks).
The other is called "Encirca", and it's an app by DuPont Pioneer that is the only thing holding my husband back from getting a WP. Well, that and the bank app that still works on his ancient iPhone...
Heck, I'd try to build them for WP myself if I thought it were possible to do that with someone else's software and had the knowledge to do it. I'd read about something called BlueStacks, but it only seems to work for windows tablets/computers, not the phone. If there is something else similar, I'd be happy to give it a try too.
Thanks!

Hello,
I am considering getting my first tablet. The thing that prompted me into looking into getting one of my own was that my husband is now bored of me stealing his (hateful) iPad to play games on it that I cannot get on my Lumia phone. (Don't know the model number but it is the now discontinued one with the big screen, the 15-something)
Anyway. I am Windows through and through. My first smart phones were Android but that was back in th very early days of Apple alternatives and it didn't do much then like it does now.
Are the apps for Windows tablets just as limited as they are for Windows phone?
Is there any way to run an Android simulator on a Windows tablet to get access to Android apps and games and would the simulator work as well as having an actual Android tablet or should I just break the chain and get an Android based tablet?
Any help gratefully received as I do not want to part with upwards of 5000,- Danish Krone for something I either can't get to work properly or don't enjoy using.
Thank you.

Answer:Tablets - Windows, Android and Apps

You can also dual boot windows and android tablets, from Chinese OEMs.
There are more UWP games on tablets, due to the centennial bridge, but few of them are touch enabled. An example would be Dark Dream, which is PC only but touch enabled.
There are a few win32's that are touch enabled that generally blow any mobile app game out of the water (although not many, and some require good hardware) - witcher 3, sims 3, trine 2, civ 5 and civ beyond earth, the shadowrun series, the legend of grimrock games (there are a few more - really only witcher 3 is high hardware btw)
Some games that are not specifically touch enabled can be run with some tweaks touch only (if they are mouse driven games). An example I can think of is tides of numerena - with gesturesign mapping a few keys it can be made playable in touch only. If you add a keyboard dock you can add some more games (ie all of the games on the platform), also if you use a controller.
There are some touch based game controllers as well, but I have little experience with them (TouchFox and TabletPro). You use these to overlay a touch controller on top of the game. I've never really had a problem finding enough games to play, and never been into first person shooters, so never really bothered with these.
...
Here's a list I made awhile back that includes some steam games, some windows store games that all play touch only for tablets...(which may save some folk some work)25 Best Touch Games for Windows Tablets ? Tap That Blog |... Read more

So I am curious, I have been hearing all the talk about getting Android Apps to Side Load onto Windows 10 Phones and I delved into it by side loading Fallout Shelter onto my 930.
I got it to work, although it often crashes at startup, heats up my phone and sucks away my battery, but once you're in-game, it is stable and very playable. This is to be expected after all since the Project Astoria is still early into development and Android Apps by default will try and connect with the Google Play Store that doesn't exist.
My question, however, is whether or not these same Android Apps could be side loaded into the desktop version of Windows 10.
Both the PC and Mobile use the same Kernel they say, plus Windows 8/8.1/10 all run similar styled Apps. I figure if W10M can handle other OS apps, then surely the Desktop OS can run loops around these things.
One game I play often on my Phone is Airport City. It is also available in the PC App Store. I know it's not the exact same app since when it came out Windows 9 was only being talked about, let alone what he have today.
But is it possible to take the same Fallout Shelter app from the Google Store and port it into my PC or even my 10.1" ASUS Tablet?

Answer:Side Loading Android Apps on W10 PC?

Android apps that will be ported over using astoria will not be universal apps :) They will only work on the mobile version. If the developer wants his android app to be universal, he/she will have to build it all over again

I bought this tablet for my daughter exactly 2 years ago and the big disappointment has been the apps or lack of them !
A while back i tried to sideload some via goodereader which required my laptop to download them first for some reason i cant recall before adding to the playbook - this was a total disaster which resulted in numerous virus / adware / spyware and my laptop is still not right.
so i wonder what my options are ? she wants to access android apps like style me girl etc
been on the blackberry site and you cant even email them for help any more ..... will never ever buy another rim product ever !

Answer:BB Playbook advice re android apps

Hi
Sorry to hear you've had such a bad time with your laptop since.
I've got a Playbook and have side loaded without issue. As far as I know, the only way to install .bar files is via the DDPB Installer, which I assume you used? You can't install .apk files, as you presumably appreciate.
There is a very helpful forum for the Playbook which has lots of 'experts' who will try to help you - Blackberry PlayBook Forums. There is a section for Android Side Loading too, which may be of considerable help.
Not all .apk's have been converted to the necessary .bar files so it's possible the game/app you want isn't available for the PlayBook.
This particular thread on the Playbook forums may help you especially. Perhaps it would be worth posting your issue on the PlayBook forum?
I hope some/all of this helps you ...

For the first few weeks since i joined the forums, I've come to know tools that could help maintain my pc and keep it from slowing down from malware, adware, cluttered files and broken registry keys. Are there any suggested tools or apps that could help properly maintain android devices?

Answer:Any suggested apps for Android maintenance?

I don't use Android, Smart Phones, Tablets, iPads, third party apps, etc...but here is a quote from my Colleague Didier Stevens, Microsoft MVP Consumer Security.Several smartphone operating systems (OS) offer no API's at all for AV applications to be able to perform. In iOS (that's the OS of the iPhone), an AV app is like any other app, it has no special privileges or access so that it can monitor the phone resources for malware. So there can not be any good anti-virus programs for the iPhone, because the OS does not provide the features required for an AV program to be able to do a good job. With that said, here is some reading material I have collected on the subject:Does your smartphone really need antivirus software?Do smartphones really need antivirus software? How effective is antivirus software on smartphones?Does Mobile Antivirus Software Really Protect Smartphones?Let's dump anti-virus software and move onWhen it comes to mobile devices, viruses are not the problem they are made out to beAnalyzing Malicious Traffic in Cellular CarriersESET Mobile Security for AndroidIf you have further questions, I suggest you start a new topic in the Tablets & Mobile Devices forum where others using such devices may have more suggestions or comments to add. Net Security said:

Even though malicious Android apps can occasionally be found on Google Play, Chinese third-party online Android markets are known for offering them by the hundreds, if not thousands.

Most of them do one of two things: collect personal and device information, or send out pricy messages to premium rate numbers. But now and then, an app that doesn't follow that pattern crops up.

Researchers of mobile security company TrustGo have recently unearthed a new type of Android malware whose goal is to surreptitiously buy apps and other content from China Mobile?s Mobile Market without alerting and needing the permission of the user.

Dubbed MMarketPay, the Trojan comes repackaged with a number of legitimate travel and weather apps, and is currently offered on no less than nine online Chinese Android markets.

According to the researchers, it has already been downloaded and likely installed by more than 100,000 users.

The malicious apps takes advantage of the easily subverted Mobile Market's payment workflow

Yesterday, we leaked the official documentation for Project Astoria ? Microsoft?s Windows Bridge for Android which will allow developers to bring their Android apps to Windows 10 Mobile with minor modifications. Following the leak, the folks from China leaked the wconnect tool ? which is what we need to install Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile. After fiddling around with wconnect and the Android SDKs, I was able to Android app on my Windows 10 Mobile device ? and let me tell you, it?s awesome.

For those wondering, I installed Twitter, Slack and Snapchat for Android on my Windows 10 Mobile device.

Installing the Android apps on my Windows 10 Mobile device was fairly easy. I just downloaded wconnect, and the Android SDK (ADB part only), enabled developer mode and used the Command Prompt to install the app. If you?re wondering, no, I didn?t have to modify the APK ? I just download it from APKMirror and installed it without even modifying a single line of code.

So how?s performance of an Android app on Windows Mobile? It?s pretty good. I have not noticed any bug on the Slack and Twitter apps yet and everything seems to work pretty well. Unfortunately though, Snapchat doesn?t work as it requires Google Play Services ? however, I?m pretty sure someone will be able to get it to work after modifying the app and removing Google Play Services from the app.

Nonetheless, here are some screenshots of the apps:

Hi guys, I have an Android Archos 101 Internet Tablet, which is fine, as far as it goes, or would be if I could get the Apps I want. My problem and it would seem the problem of many others, is that I can't get apps from 'Google Play' or anywhere aother than by clicking the onboard carrier bag icon!
Yes I know how to download apps to my PC, then connecting the tablet to the PC and transmitting the app that way. But I'm uncertain if this only works with the Free ones. As I want to buy 'Sketch Book Pro 6 for Android'. Which is only available through Google Play and when I try to download anything from their it just tells me to click the icon on my tablet.
Suggestions please

A recent Windows Central article: Alleged photo of curved Lumia display hints at Microsoft's flagship Windows Phone | Windows Central included a post with a link to this article Microsoft's Plan To Save Windows Phone: Android And iOS Apps has got me fired up to do something to let companies know about the capability that I have been aware of since first announced. Like many using the Windows platform (phone and PC), I also have an Android (or iOS) device to give me access to apps that I need. I would much rather be totally on Windows hardware, so, I have decided to email the companies that develop apps that I require but only exist on Android or iOS.
"Hello, I'm a Windows Phone and Windows PC user and very comfortable using technology. I find it very frustrating that the Windows platform is not seeing support from the Business and App Developer community.
As a member and wanting to use your services on the platforms I use, I am writing this to inform company name about an upcoming capability for Windows 10. Microsoft is providing developers a way to very easily port existing Android of iOS apps over to Microsoft. Android: https://dev.windows.com/en-US/uwp-br...roject-astoria iOS: https://dev.windows.com/en-US/uwp-br...ect-islandwood
I urge you to seriously investigate and consider the opportunity to service a platform that has been responsible for a large part of your success in business. There is a great opportunity to significantly increase your user base as Windows ported... Read more

Answer:Email companies about porting Android/iOS apps now!

We currently have certain things going on and in some cases actually managed to book some success, in the form of beta or an acknowledgement that an app is coming (real madrid app for instance; now we already have the app).. http://forums.windowscentral.com/win...1/331993-6.htm
But you're being specific to w10 and the "simple" porting options. Keep in mind that the porting will mostly work for simple apps/games (candy crush), MS did try to make that clear..
As for developing an app right now? most devs will avoid w10, because it's still too "buggy"

You must have some Adobe products. I've never see it on my PC but have on my Mac. It is used by Adobe as a download manager.

I have just opened my new computer (HP) yesterday and tried to add Kaspersky system to the computer. I did so by searching for Kaspersky on the web. Found a number and called. Talked to Jonathan in India (literally) and he proceeded to go through my files (after I did allow him to log in to the computer, as he said he would be helping me add Kaspersky software to my computer) and said I had a tremendous amount of problematic spyware, etc etc that needed to be removed first. This he would gladly do today for $299.99. After choking on my soup, I told him "no" and began interrogating him a bit, ultimately hanging up and disconnecting his log in to my computer. Uggh! I then called a friend who said I could easily add my current Kaspersky software from my old computer to my new as I had three licenses for it. She told me if I was worried about any real threats, you all would be VERY helpful, as you have helped her in the past.
IN addition, I have added Kaspersky software, but when looking at my system and security center, I seem to be unable to turn on my firewalls, spyware, virus protection, etc. Is that because the Kaspersky program is taking care of all that and preventing any additional software from doing it?
Thank you so much for your help in advance.
