I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: - Protect your website

Wonder if this site (Malwaretips) could actually be possible to do it since there is a "Malware Hub" that contains active and dangerous samples.

I design websites using Joomla and host them with I want to learn how to scan my files for code from hackers. Can you give me some safe ideas and/or links to do this?
Thank you

Answer:how to scan/protect website files from hackers

Greetings, plainjane8...

I write my own code and pretty much know if something's been added/altered, so I can't cast any light on the use of Joomla. However, you could periodically submit your url(s) to VirusTotal which will give you a good idea about whether your code contains any nasties.

Running 8.1 on Toshiba laptop.
I realized my Malwarebytes 2.0 wasn't turning on when I booted, and then when it did, it would flag "Unable to access update server".
I have tried the uninstall tool and reinstall, and an update works. I scan, it doesn't find anything, but then falls into the same problem with the next boot.
Also, the Real-Time Protection status stays as: Malware Protection Enabled, Malicious Website Protection DISABLED
Any ideas?

Answer:Malwarebytes can't connect to update server or keep on Malicious Website Protect

Hello otarsus:
If your system did not have any unresolved malware issues from any type of previous MBAM2 scans, and your laptop has the correct date, time zone and time, then, since you already have performed a Clean Re-install process, it would be helpful see three diagnostic logs posted in the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Help sub-forum.
Please establish membership via Create Account and then read the following and individually attach the 3 requested logs in a post to the above sub-forum: Diagnostic Logs along with a copy/paste of your post's narrative from above.
Thank you.

Hello everyone. I'm A+ certified but anti-virus is not my strong point. I'm cleaning a computer for a friend of a friend. They are complaining of their computer going slow and having pop-ups.
The details I have gathered so far:
Windows 7 operating system
primary user has no password (forgot to check if account was in the admin group)
users use internet explorer 11 mainly
What I have done so far:
1) Ran the Avira Rescue System (scan takes several hours on this machine so I could not be present for it's finish)
2) Examined the problem. Appeared that the users were getting redirected to phishing websites (wvd. proresync. net specifically) as well as internet browser advertising popups caused by the proresync website. I noticed that there did not appear to be any pop ups from navigating the computer itself.
3) Ran Spybot S&D - First immunizing then scanning. Spybot found some 1500 entries. all but 13 of them could be fixed. I looked over the 13 entries, I noticed they all contained a reference to "Search Protect". Let Spybot attempt to remove the 13 entries after a reboot.
At this point I decided that to continue I needed to research Search Protect and the proresync website.
4) Left the Avira Rescue System running to see if it could remove what Spybot left behind.
From some Googling I gathered that the website was an advertising website that hackers could direct traffic to and that Search Protect was a virus... Read more

I'm a complete novice at technical stuff, so I need some hand-holding and patience. A reader of my website has recently informed me that my "website contains an "HTTP Malicious Javascript Encoder" from It was blocked by our systems, but it is very nasty and could harm others."

Answer:Website has been hacked by a HTTP Malicious Javascript Encoder, Website redirection

The HIJACKTHIS output from your machine most likely has nothing to do with this problem. There is no virus, your site has been hacked. The "infection" is on the webserver.

WordPress has exploits discovered every couple months, and if I assume correctly, you have not been updating it when a new version comes out. The hackers have used one of the exploits to upload a .asp script or something similar which then edited your page, causing the redirects. Obviously, I (nor anyone else here) can be 100% sure what the problem is without further information.

Your best bet is to install the newest version of wordpress, use some "wordpress-hardening" guides that are out there to make it less susceptible to hackers, and then convert and migrate your existing database to the newest version if it can be salvaged.

To whom it may concern:My comp has been acting strange for several weeks now. Windows date and time are messed up and refuse to stay corrected when i do fix them. The time and date are always correct but the year constantly reverts back to 2005 after i continuously change it to 2008. Because of this many different websites are not compatible with my IE because they have date sensitive certificates and my IE doesn't like them. I get asked about 5 times per site if it is okay to proceed and it is very annoying. Also I cannot do any online banking because the transactions are date sensitive. Is this a virus/trojan/bug/etc? or is this a hardware issue. My problem sounds very much like a post by Pinky Smalls at this link. I followed his/her protocol and still have had no luck clearing the issue. I tried synchronizing with internet time, but it keeps giving me and error that it is unable to connect. I have already tried replacing my motherboard battery with no help. Perhaps its time for a new mobo? or do you think it is a virus? I'd rather not end up like this guy once i put a new mobo in and infect that one too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. -dodsong

Hi folks,
I started having this problem sometime in the latter part of 2014. While reading my medical journals and moving on to the next article, the fbi website pops up and supplants my medical journal website. I have to close and log in to my medical website all over again. Sometimes, even that does not work and I cannot get back to my original website anymore on that day. It happens to my PC laptop, my wife's Macbook and even a brand new Macbook Air that I tried out. For some strange reason, it only happens at home on all 3 computers. I don't get this problem reading my Journals in the Hospital where I work. Interestingly, when I go to the park away from my house and activate the mobile hotspot on my handphone and do my journal reading there, it does not happen.( not yet anyway).
I would like to attach a picture of the fbi website for you but I don't see any paperclip icon on the toolbar.
I would really appreciate any help anyone can provide on this matter.
Thank you

Links to websites, either from emails or from shortcuts pinned to my PC desktop's task-bar have suddenly been directed to Google Chromes search page. There are four icons pinned to the task-bar that work;Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Google Earth and Windows Live Mail all of the rest, such as Facebook, YouTube and others now default to the Google Chrome search page.

I have run numerous anti-virus scans all of which have not picked up anything sinister.

The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. I am not a IT tecky but should be able to follow straight forward instruction, if anyone has any ideas on this problem.

I have a website that I made with Front Page 2000.

What I need now is a free website hosting site that supports Front Page extensions.

Also the hosting site must not add add banners to my site/pages. Or at least the banner should be as small as possible at the top of the page.

I have been searching different hosting sites, but most do NOT support Front Page extensions on their servers.:dead:

I need to find a free hosting service that supports FP 2000 extensions.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the Windows 8 Consumer build 8250 installed on my Toshiba NETBOOK. Everything is all dandy except certain features on certin websites.
I am unable to actually upload pictures to flickr. Like when I click the "Choose files to upload" nothing happens, no box allowing me to choose the files in explorer appears and nothing happens. I have tired with adblock on and adblock off and it makes no difference. Also when trying to play games within facebook. The games do not load or nothing appears.
Its like as if the adblock is on but there is no adblock on. When right clicking it shows that the flash plugin/extension is running but not the product. This only started when i installed windows 8 consumer. The developer build did not have the issue. I also have tried Chrome, Firefox, and Internet explorer and all errors/issues are reproduced.
Anyone have any ideas?

Here is the MSDN Social issue i posted in they're forums.

I am not sure if this is correct forum to post my issue....but here it is:

Currently my company website ( is registered with company called Within i access the account info and I see that there a setting for under Web Services that point to an ip address (assigned to one of statis dsl lines) the ip forwarding is setup with option as "Use Simple DNS" entry.

My company has the main website as hosted with a different company. The hosting account contains a setting that will redirect from to

My issue is that when I am at work logged to company domain, I type and I get error message about web site not found. When I go home using my home pc I type and I get redirected to

Is this problem related to network issue such as access blocking, ip address issue, or something else?

Answer:Company Network, Website, and Website Redirection

I have a differnt problem, I click and I cannot get there, but I go to and it works.. hmm..
A few things:
- Make sure you have a dedicated IP
-Once you have found that you do, and what is is, go to domain management and edit the A record to that IP, and you should be good.
I think that is your problem. I am not 100% sure, I could be wrong. Wait for someone else to reply.

I have a basic family website (it's now about 25Mb) to share photos and news etc with family. I've been using MS FrontPage for this. I read recently on click here that MS is about to upgrade FrontPage to challenge the heavyweight products like Dreamweaver and aim for the corporate market. Is there a consensus on what sort of web-publishing software that personal/home users should use? I don't mind paying about £100 for a decent software package that's been properly tested etc, but if FrontPage moves toward the corporate market I can't justify paying £300+ for a family webpage software package. Editor/Forum Moderator - Is there a chance that PC Advisor will review/do an article on this in the near future?

Answer:Basic Website Design for a Family Website

The up and coming release of FrontPage as part of Office 11 or as a standalone program is superb. It is by far the very best release I have ever seen and I'm including all of the Office 11 programs in that sweeping statement, not just FrontPage.I think you have already answered your own question to a very large extent though. You specify two things straight away; your level of need (family website for news and pictures etc) and your budget limit. I only wish more people kept a handle on those two prime requisites before making purchase decisions. Nobody can decide for you, but I would say that if the version of FrontPage you are currently using is serving your needs well, why change it at all ?I design websites professionally and I still use FrontPage 2000 quite a lot although I do spend most of my time in the current version (FrontPage 2002, sometimes called FrontPage XP) and a lot of other software. Keep in mind that the program is there to make your life easier and more productive and efficient. The designer can design regardless of the editor he or she uses, but the editing software should be a hige help and speed advantage. I can't think of any other web editor that is more adept at this than FrontPage from version 2000 onward.Unless you have some pretty exotic needs, you could do far worse than save your money and keep using what you currently have, as long as it meets your requirements. As your needs grow, so could your demand for software. The up and coming release of ... Read more

I'm having trouble setting up my internet on a computer. I tried all the usual things and have narrowed the problem down to something between the computer and the router. I opened up the router (Linksys Wireless-G) page (with all the router settings, I know its got a name...) on the computer and have checked all the settings against another computer on the same router that works fine. I then went into the diagnostics page of the router settings and began trying to ping various websites. It successfully pinged, but when I tried to open the same site in Firefox it would not load. I pasted the IP address for Google,, into Firefox and it loaded the page. When I try a search, or try to navigate away from the page I'm told that "the page cannot be displayed" just like before. I don't understand the problem, I can send and receive data but I can't open any webpages. I'm assuming there's a setting somewhere that I've overlooked, could someone please point me in the right direction?

Answer:Solved: Can ping website but cannot load website

I tried to have it scanned on ,but it said 0/63 what does that mean ?also it said -No engines detected this URL-the reason I suspect is because another website re-directed it to that and then windows and task manager would Not let close it until after a re-boot.

Hello all!
My girlfriend decided to try and download something and apparently it wasn't from quite the right place I've run Malwarebytes and ADWCleaner, but I'm still getting a Malicious Website Blocked warning from Malwarebytes for an Outbound threat called I've run a number of full scans, but nothing seems to be able to clean it. It's coming from a chrome.exe deep in the users/.../appdata directories.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi there

For a couple of weeks I have not been able to access our business website or the hosting company website from our main office. I can access all other websites.

I can ping the website with no loss through a command prompt. Other people can access the website no problem and I can access it fine from my pc at home.

I have checked the hosts file and the address is not blocked.

I have contacted the ISP and the hosting company and they can find nothing wrong, so I am assuming the problem lies with me.

Does anyone have any ideas why this may be happening?

Many thanks in advance

Hi all, this may sound like a stupid question... but if one wants to save photos from a website all they do is right-click the photo and click save, right? In most cases, unless the photo is copyrighted or protected by it's owner. I'm viewing my own website on Netscape 7.1, I want to save all my own photo's from my site. After a system crash a few months back... I lost all the existing photo's that were on the drive (yes stupid of me not to back-up). Now I'm scrared that in case something was to happen to the website, all photo's would be lost forever. If you wanna check-out my website: (Halloween Based), see if you can save photo's or not? Does anyone know why I cannot save my own sties photo's? To me it sounds odd, I can right-click on them and it says "Save Image As", I supposedly put them into a folder that I put all my photo's.... when I go back there through "Windows Explorer", the folder is there, but none of the photos I just saved...?

Hey guys,

I've been racking my brain on this for a while now, and I can't seem to put my finger on what's gone wrong. Maybe i've been working on it too much now.

trying to access from the company website and the page cannot be displayed on any browser on any of our domain machines.

Accessing that same page from outside our network works fine.

The website resolves correctly in the DNS when i try NSLOOKUP -->

Tried TRACERT and can only get to the Firewall and not beyond.

I can view any other website perfectly except this one.

Checked with my ISP and they said we don't seem to have anything blocking our outbound connections.

We have a Sophos UTM9 Firewall setup... and none of the web filtering options are enabled.
Any ideas on what I might be missing ?
Thanks for any help you guys can provide !!

Answer:Website Access problem with only 1 website

Solved my own problem after all !!

Just FYI in case anyone experiences the same frustrations with this...

ICMP was disabled on the Firewall and a Country Code block was in effect that I had not initially noticed.
So voila ! Solved

Hello there, I have a problem that began yesterday afternoon and actually, I didn't think it was a problem at first. I was updating some webpages and when I was about to upload the changes and I just couldn't. Then I tried to open my website but the browser wouldn't load it and I just got a error saying it couldn't connect to the server. I thought the server was probably down so I when to sleep. On the next day I kept noticing this frustrating problem which made me contact my hosting service and ask what was going on; it turns out there were no problems at all with my website; in fact, a friend of mine told me he had no problems whatsoever when typing my website's URL.

What I've done:
I decided then to check for myself, turned on my laptop (not usually connected to the internet), unplug my ethernet cable from my desktop computer and connect it to my laptop, I opened the browser and voila! .. I was able to access my website. I went back to my desktop computer, tried accessing my website but I still couldn't. So there's obviously something wrong on my computer.

I rebooted my compuer in safe mode in order to run a full scan with Norton Internet Security 2011 and it did found 4 things. It deleted them and then I ran a second full scan, this time with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware but now it didn't find anything. I rebooted my computer in normal mode hoping that this problem would go away but the problem is still there.

I recently attempted to go to a website ( : yes it is pornographic, yes I'm a bad person. When it loaded up however, it was a different site (,0,0,0,0). At first, I thought it had just been purchased by them, but then my wife tried it on her computer, and was not redirected.

I immediately ran every program I could think of, and a few more I had to search for (Avast, SpyBot S&D, Windows Live OneCare, CCleaner, CWShredder, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, and of course HiJackThis), to see if any of those spotted anything out of the ordinary. They found a couple of tracking cookies, 1 bad file (a keygen I downloaded, due to losing my serial# during a move), cleaned all my temp files, reset all my IE settings to default, and yet the website is still being hijacked.

I downloaded the Beta of Safari, and the website does not get redirected using Safari. This tells me that it changed a setting somewhere having specifically to do with Internet Explorer. I tried everything I could think of, and am now turning to you for help. I appreciate any advice/help in advance.

The problem is Guestlines sites wont work from this internet connection, click here click here, and the program used for hotel bookings that they provide doesnt connect either.Their sites are working as I have another connection avaiable which I am having to use currently for the program to work, so nothing is wrong with their servers. I have been in contact with them, they have no idea why and say they never block ip addresses. Our isp is providing both lines, one which works and one which doesnt (with these servers), and they have not blocked any sites either. When I trace route the site I get "Request Timed Out". On the other connection it leaves our isp's servers after 3 hops according to them, which leaves about 6 more servers it passes through before it reaches the destination. They suggested it may be getting blocked by one of the other servers. I don't know why that would happen but I also can't think of anything else it might be.Thought I would try here incase someone else has encountered something like this before as I can't find much about it by searching the internet.Hope someone can help, thanks.

Hi all,
I have a little bug with my internet explorer 8: the website logos that appears before the website name on the tab or in favourites, or before the address in the address bar are mixed up and change around. It only happens to sites that are in my favourites, and only a few of them. For example the home page for major geeks currently has the windows logo next it in the tab, the address bar and in my favourites. But any other page at Major Geeks and its the usual icon. I know that it is only a small thing, but one of them happens to be the my banks signing in page. Probably just a coincidence, but my worry is whether a corruption to IE8 has occured as a result of a virus.
This only started yesterday and doesn't affect other users on the computer. I have ran Norton 360 and Spybot who say no virus. I have deleted the sites from my favourites. Even after deleting the icons are still wrong if I go back to the page. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled IE8.
I would be very grateful on people's opinions on whether this could be a security issue or any ideas on how to rectify, or whether it's not worth worrying about!!
Thanks very much for any feedback.
Jono Roto

Answer:Website logo next to website name in the tab?

I don't have a solution for IE because I don't use it but if you want to google around for ideas, the little pictures are call favicons.

Edit: Just to add--this used to be a more common problem in FF and was just a fluke not malicious. I haven't seen it occur in a while. Again, not sure about IE.

It sounds like you are asking for a recommendation for an anti-virus program.I like Avast!: - the Home Edition is free. This program combines anti-virus with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit protection.Keep checking back, other Forum members will have additional recommendations.Best of luck!

Hi, I'm 17 and recently my 34 year old brother (dad's side) moved in, and well, i'll spare you the drama- I'm no longer speaking to him. this morning there was a bad argument, because I didn't say good morning which ended with him threatening me and my dad warning him that he had no right to do that and it will not be tolerated- and i ended up on his computer which he left on, and i found text files with my usernames and passwords to my myspace and facebook accounts, as well as to accounts I don't even remember having. Apparently he used "cain and abel" password cracker. Before this he had radmin server on my computer, and all computers in the house, so if i'm connected to the internet he can watch my screen and even control it. I've changed my passwords, deleted the text files from his computer, and now i'm going to clear my saved passwords on internet explorer and firefox. My question is- is this enough to protect myself? he's a computer repair tech who recently became interested in "ethical hacking" although obviously he's dropped the ethical part. I just installed norton antivirus to check for any keyloggers. How can I protect myself? my files, my conversations with friends- how do i keep that safe? He's on the network, does that give him easy access to my computer?

I just fixed this problem for a friend. It's not too sophisticated.

Here's what's happening. Apparently someone inadvertently installs some antivirus protection (ESET). This program then gives a false warning, telling you to fix the problem you must purchase their full protection system at this address:

Instead of reinstalling OP, here's what I did (BTW, the system infected was running XP)

1. Go to safe mode - F8.
2. go to RUN, then type "msconfig"
3. Go to 'Start Up', scroll down looking for fqtsftv and egui and disable
4. Go to control panel 'Add Remove' and look for anything related to "ESET" and uninstall
5. Go to Documents and Settings. In all profiles search 'Application Data' and 'Local Settngs' for anything EST. Delete. Also go to program files and find anything EST and delete
5. Go to Internet Explorer Browser and click on tools, internet options, connections, LAN SETTING...then undo proxy settings

You should be good to go

I think you have it wrong, see is a known malware site, using the fake AV front.Louis

I'm tired of ppl messing up with my sisters pc, hehe, I just formatted the whole system and downloaded some security, I gotta head to work in 1 hour, what is the best way I can protect her pc?(malware, spybot etc) safe browsing.

any help?

Answer:best way to protect pc

Take a look at SafeSpace or SandboxIE for running browsers in virtual space. Or if she can handle it, run the whole OS virtually with Returnil or DeepFreeze. For people who don't install a lot of things, it's ideal. You can even uninstall all the AV and still be pretty safe (Returnil includes AV) and the machine runs much faster.

Virtualization Solutions (Malware attacks become impossible because either the browser or the whole operating system are isolated from the real system):

SandboxIE (Virtualizes IE, Firefox, or any other browser and works on most other programs, too)
VMWare Browser Appliance (Runs in the free VMWare Player. The Player also will run any of 100's of preconfigured operating system and appliance images downloadable for free from VMWare, and you can even make your own VM's to run in it with the open-source VMmanager)
Artificial Dynamics Safe Space (Similar to SandboxIE, safe browsing and protection from malware and hackers)
Fortes Grand Virtual Sandbox
Microsoft Web Sandbox (Open-Source) (In development but usable)
Returnil Virtual System (The Premium version allows you to save all changes inside the virtual OS to the real system, but even the free version has a virtual drive where items can be saved outside the virtual container)
Windows Steady State (Now supports Vista, too)

Hello,My name is S_R_S and i'v been spending a  lot of time around hackers to understand how they think..I'm giving you guy's a quick few things to think about to protect yourselves.Part 1:What type of hackers are there? There are 2 main types of hackers.  The first kind is the kind we are all afraid of. We think and talk of these people as "Script kiddies" they use programs programmers make and use them to hurt people. Most of the computer crimes are happening by these people. Most of them are young and trouble makers. The second type are true hackers.  Most of these people are older, intelligent, and they want to see what they can do.These people are normally programmers and web designers as well.  This group of people are not harmful (not that I think hacking is ok) they just get a thrill out of hacking and they want to push themself to the limit.this thread is how to protect yourselves from both types.Part 2:staying safe from Viruses and worms..This part is mostly from protecting yourself from the first kind of hacker. Here  are some programs I use and like to protect myself:Symantec antivirus, (Virus protection)Macafee, (virus protection)Norton, (virus protection, not many people here like it ;p)Zone-Alarm,(Firewall)Ad-aware,(spyware/add remover)Spybot search and destroy,(spyware/add/trojan & more remover)Spyware terminator, (Key logger killer/deleter)Spyware sweeper, (spyware remover)and almost any pop up blocker to blo... Question: Protect Your PC

Running WIndows 7
Protect your PC did a drive by download on my wife two days owns me.
Have tried the guide on and it appears that the trojan has morphed, or I have another virus as well.

Had rkill and malwarebytes on this from a previous version of this delightful trojan.
run rkill it says everything is good. Howeer, no .exe file can run in normal mode or safe mode
This means I cannot run malwarebytes.
Cannot open Task Manager to manually work, normal or safe.
Cannot open explore to move malwarebytes RKill, Kaspersky or others from USB or DVD onto desktop
Cannot get into regedit etc etc.
Trying any of these will get a PYPC pop up.

Managed to get Webroot up and running but it stops after two files on the winlogon.dll.

It was a cheap PC so the box I don't care about, need a small portion of the data, not backed up for a few months.

I am a relatively adept end user but not computer geek.

Question: Protect USB

I have this USB that I use on all computers at work. This has all the applications, utilities, anti-viruses etc that I need. I run a workgroup of 30 PCs. Every now and then a colleague comes with their or a friends laptop asking me to remove viruses/ install programs etc.

Now when i plug in the USB, it immediately gets infected. Before it was that hide file and folders in that unnamed folder. But now it is that cc**f** virus that goes onto corrupt files.

Question :Is it possible for my USB to be protected from being written to until i want to? Just remain read-only so I can use it for installation on any type of computer.

Nothing complex. Simple stuff will do.

Thank you

First, I apologize for my rough syntax, but I'm French and I do not control verywell the language of Shakespeare.
I own a Z50 , and I would protect the theft tale. I created an administrator and user password for the bios, but apparently this does not prevent reinstallation of the system via OneKey Recovery.
Would there some way (eg password) to prevent reinstallation of the system?
Thank you.Mod's Edit: System model added to front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

Answer:Z50 - Protect my PC

Hi Dwiri,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
What you need is Intel Anti-Theft Technology
The Z50 do not have this feature.
Lenovo Notebooks with Intel® Anti-Theft Technology are ThinkPad T , X and W series
Its is directly on the Intel processor itself that safeguards a pc against theft.
Other than the BIOS administrator password and harddrive password, you may want to check on other options with these article
Hope this helped you answer your query.

I was recently browsing and came across a suspicious website on IE8, and it proceeded to load on the ave.exe trojan. I ended its process tree in resource monitor and then found and deleted its keys in the registry. This seems to have removed it. It's a nasty bugger that runs itself again everytime an executable is opened. What concerns me is that I run very tight security zone settings in IE8 on a fully patched system, yet somehow this was able to get in without my consent. I also have Win7 set to prompt me anytime a program runs, but this didn't phase it a bit. I would like to know what hole this trojan is exploiting and what settings I might change in IE8 to prevent it from hijacking my computer again. Does anyone have any experience with this?

After a week or so of Vista Forum membership, I have realized I know so little computing but am enabled with so much power to.. RUIN my PC. Yep, I confess I am a click trigger happy sort.

So, I activated the built in Administrator and made myself STANDARD account user. And right away I am confronted with issues I am clueless on:

Apparently if I create a password for built in Administrator, she (I always thought she is a lady, dunno exactly why) will lose EFS-encrypted files, personal certificates and stored passwords for Web sites or network resources.

Do I want to so divest her or ask to make a password reset floppy disk? Either way, I am clueless. And what are all those I typed in BOLD?

Answer:Protect your PC from yourself.

I would use a user account that stops you from doing stupid things. Only use the administrator to install new apps.

Hello everybody,
I have been using my social security number for my taxation purposes. But I have been recently intimidated by my lawyer that since the crime of identity theft has been on the high I should be careful in using it. I am really concerned about this and need to know whether there are any ways by which we can protect them.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Is there any way to protect SSN???

Im no lawyer but i think i know a few offhand:
1. If you are sending that information online, make sure the connection is not open, but encrypted. (Usually the url box or status bar will have a gold lock in it).
2. Make sure the computer used to transmit the information is not infested with any form of malware, or spyware. If there is any of these problems, never let that machine see ANY personal information till you know its clean! They can have key loggers or some other exploit that may extract this info. One idea if you do alot of banking and such online is to have a dedicated office pc possibly with internet content control to ensure you do not go anywhere that you can pick up something unfriendly accidentally.
3. Keep the card secure. Maybe if you have a filing cabinet or strongbox with this info, keep it all under lock and key.
Do all of that and you should not have any problems.

hello all,

i work as a manager in an internet cafe and i dont have great knowledge in networking or LAN connections.I have 33 PC connected through LAN to two servers . Both servers give 2 mb speed for all the computers. I have two problems..

the first is: one of the customers was able to hack into the network from a client's PC and stop one of the servers, he was able to monitor and cut off any other client connection he wishes to disconnect. How can i protect myself from such attacks and hacks? and how can i detect those who try to hack into the LAN ?

the second question is: how can i control the amount of internet speed given to each PC? because some customers mainly download stuff from the internet which causes the internet speed for the rest of the PCs in the cafe to become very slow ?

i wish someone can help..thanks

Answer:how to protect myself?

what OS's are running on the 33 PC's? Hopefully they are restricted user accounts on all of them which it sounds like they aren't. Do you have encryption on the network if it's wireless?

My brother's PC has managed to get infected, despite using Avast and Sandboxie for his browsing, so I'm looking at changing his account to a LUA and setting a SRP as per this guide to prevent programs running from other than the specified folders.
Preventing computer malware by using Software Restriction Policies. | Peter Gubarevich

I don't think this will be effective unless I change his account to a LUA, as otherwise malware could easily just change the registry key to disable the SRP. I think I also need to set the SRP to NOT apply to administrators, so that he can switch to an Admin account and do stuff that the SRP blocks under his LUA.

The issue I have though is how he will install/update software when he needs to. I know he can switch to the Admin account to do this but then won't the software be installed under that account (or the Administrators group) and thus not accessible to him? It's also quite inconvenient if he has a browser open that explains how to do something and then he finds it can't be done under the LUA, so he switches to the Admin account but then he can't see the guide anymore and has to keep switching back, or open a browser under the Admin account, copy the url from the LUA and then paste it into the Admin browser.

Also, Avast seems to run it's updater from the temp folder and I obviously can't include that in the SRP whitelist as then anything could run from there.

I found I can run some stuff with Shift+Right click -> Run as different... Read more

Answer:Using SRP and LUA to protect PC

Does the computer in question have the User Account Control (UAC - formerly LUA) turned on?

I would set it at the highest level and he should be using a standard account (also formerly called Limited User Account).

I've not used SRP - so I'll not comment on that.

Apps installed while logged on as admin might be available to all users - it depends on the app.

Question: Sys Protect

Dear Sirs,

I have had a problem with Sys Protect invading my computer. I have run Hijack This and can't find the virus on my computer.

At first, every time I tried to conncect to the internet, this pop up came up and asked me if I wanted to download Sys Protect on my computer. As a few of your users have already stated, we finally downloaded it to our computer and it wouldn't stop coming up with that pop up. Every time it came on, it went to Mozilla Firefox and it asked me if I would like to download this. If I didn't, it would shut down my computer. I finally downloaded it and it subsided for a while. Ever since I have deleted Mozilla, it has happened less frequently, but it still comes up every once in a while.

Our computer freezes occasionally and it has never done that before. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it has happened ever since that has been put on my computer.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I recently had some bad time with a person. Right now, I am in danger of being attacked by a hired hacker to destroy important data from my PC and denigrate my image in front of the ones I know. This would be a big hit for me, so I want to know what can I do to protect myself.

Right now i checked the following:
1. Antivirus software
2. Firewall configured with a list of trusted programs
3. Password manager application (no more passwords stored in browser)
4. Changed all the passwords to more powerful ones (15+ random generated characters)
5. Bought a VPN

Please let me know what else can I do. I don't think there are any law regulations in my country that can help me, so I'm on my own.
Please consider this as being serious. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Help me protect myself

Your questions are ones that are frequently asked, please take a look here: Answers to common security questions: Prevention & Choosing an Anti-virus or FirewallPlease keep in mind that nothing is 100% attack/bulletproof. The only way to achieve that, is not be connected to the web.

Question: p/w protect?

I carry a floppy around with the backup to my financial info, I would like to password protect it but I am not sure how. Is there a FREE utility that can do this? Thanks in advance

Answer:p/w protect?

Well I use a program called Paranoid to password protect files and folders. It works well and it should work for what you want to do. There are other free one's but i haven't bothered to try them. But to access the files on the floppy after protecting them with Paranoid you'll need to have Paranoid installed on any pc you want to use the floppy on. You can get Paranoid v1.4 here:

A tip: If you unprotect a file or folder with Paranoid and it won't open, just close Windows Explorer and then reopen it and then the file or folder will open.

Another tip: If you have alot of files on the floppy, create a folder in Windows Explorer then transfer all the files from the floppy into that folder. Then right click the folder and click 'send to 3 1/2 Floppy' to send the whole folder to the floppy. Then just password protect the folder on the floppy rather than all the individual files seperately.

Like xp or IE ask for an password before letting you acess to IE?

Answer:XP Pro... protect

I would just take steps to remove such things as they begin to accumulate, since keeping them completely out can be a real pain in the ass. Ad-Aware and Spybot are my favorites for clean-up.
