How was I infected?
Rogues can get on to computers without the user's consent through Drive-by downloads. When a user visits a compromised or infected website, the site immediately checks for any security vulnerabilities on the machine to inject the malicious code.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs utorrent, Limewire, and Kazaa are frequently used by hackers to distribute malware
Hackers can also trick the user into downloading a file, saying it is a legitimate file needed to view a video or pictures.

How can I prevent these infections?
1. Keep Your System Updated

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office product bugs and vulnerabilities. Please ensure you update your system regularly.

To update Windows and Office

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
2. Select Automatic (recommended) if you want the updates to be downloaded and installed without prompting you.
3. Select Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them button if you want the updates to be downloaded automatically but to be installed at another time.

To manually update Windows,
Start Internet Explorer. Go to Tools > Windows Update

2. Keep your Antivirus up-to-date

Make sure that you update your antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware programs regularly. If you don't have an antivirus, download any one of the following:
Avira AntiVir Personal- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50000 viruses. Free support.
avast! 5 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
Microsoft Security Essentials - Free anti-virus program for Windows.

3. Avoid Peer-to-peer programs

Peer-to-peer programs are legitimate but the files shared are extremely dangerous. Hackers often use fake file names to trick users into downloading malware.

4. Switch your browser

Firefox is a more secure, faster browser than Internet Explorer. Firefox contains less vulnerabilities, reducing the risk of drive-by downloads.
Google Chrome is another good browser that is faster and more secure than Internet Explorer.

Preferred Solution: How to remove MS Removal Tool [Removal Guide]

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not sure if I am following the correct posting etiquette by creating a topic here, but any help would be much appreciated. I have picked up the System Tool virus and am using this guide to remove it. Everything was fine until Malwarebytes completed its scan and asked to reboot to help it remove the infected stuff - I let it reboot and it came back on with System Tool still all over everything. Am I doing something wrong?

I have got rather annoying 'Security Tool' the rogue anti-spyware program on my PC. I have been following the excllent guide to get ridding of this on the site here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...e-security-tool and all was going well until i got to step 11. There i could not save the file to the C drive like it asked saying that 'i did not have permission to save it here' and i was to 'contact the administrator to obtain permission'. So ive ground to halt here, can anyone give me advice to continue to try and get rid of this.ThanksDavid

Answer:Security Tool - Stuck on guide to removal

Whilst trying to follow this my computer crashed and rebooted itself, now starting again it will now not even let me use rkill.com. I tried starting up Malwarebytes but that didnt work either.

Yesterday (May 13, 2011) I was struck by the MS REMOVAL TOOL malware infection. I followed the guide you posted here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-ms-removal-tool to the letter with one exception -- I did not find an unauthorized proxy server connection to disable because one was not displayed there.

After completing all the steps, I found most of my desktop folders and files were still hidden from view. I ran the UNHIDE program, because it worked for me a couple of weeks ago when I had the similar System Tool malware infection. UNHIDE seemed to work well this time too, until I attempted to do a System Restore today. I wanted to do a System Restore to an earlier date in an attempt to make certain that my PC was in an uninfected state.

When I followed the path to Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools I found that System Restore is no longer available to me. Neither are Disk Defragment and Disc Cleanup which are usually in that list of System Tools.

In fact, almost all my Start Menu programs are hidden or their folders are showing (Empty)

As I am watching GMER run, I can see that many of these programs are still on my system because GMER is scanning its components and support files. Both MalwayrBytes abd Microsoft Security Essentials show my system clean at this point. But given that I cannot find my installed programs or do a System Restore, I am certain that this PC is either still infected or permanently damaged.
