I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Re: Satellite A500 - How to recover data from sandisk

I assume you have copied the single applications which were placed in C:\Programs Files folder to the SD card. Is it right?

Well, usually it?s not possible to copy these programs again and then to start it?
The point is that this will not work because such programs should be installed firstly on the HDD.

You can copy just some ?stand alone? files like movies, pictures, mp3 file, data files? but you can not copy (copy and past) the software?

I tried updating the BIOS to improve performance of the laptop but the update was corrupt and now the laptop will not boot.
Can you help me to recover the bios?

Thank you very much in advance.

Answer:How to recover BIOS on Satellite A500-18Q?

>I tried updating the BIOS to improve performance of the laptop but the update was corrupt and now the laptop will not boot.

In such case you have to get in contact with an local ASP.
The ASP technician would be able refresh the BIOS using crisis BIOS disk.
You cannot do this because such disks and trad-BIOS update is available just for ASP technicians only :(

I've just purchased a new Satllite A500-1GL laptop (like 3 weeks ago)
it came with Windows 7 Home Premium.

I've installed too many programs/apps/games.. and It became too slow,
i tried to use defragment, scandisk, i uninstalled millions of softwares.. but it still very slow, screen sometimes blinks, it just need a format but i cant do it! :s

Now i want to fromat it, and set it back to the factury default state.

I've found this link somewhere in the forum
I tried to follow the steps, and here is what happened:

I tried to restart the laptop, hit F8, enter the "Windows Repair" option,
i chosen the language, entered the administrator passowrd,
Now, when i reached Step 4, I didnt had the "Toshiba HDD Recovery option"..!!!?

So, what should i do now? :/ :s
My laptop is getting slower and slower,

P.S: I have a drive (13 GB) labeled as Data Recovery, and it has "HDD Recovery" folder.. !!
P.S2: I tried Option 3 (Windows Complete PC Restore) and tried to Browse the H Drive (the one that has the HDD Recovery files), but it didnt work also..

Answer:Satellite A500 - How to recover to factory settings?

> I tried to restart the laptop, hit F8, enter the "Windows Repair" option,
You have to press F8 and have to choose ?Repair MY Computer?!
You have chosen Windows Repair?

The Repair MY Computer is the first option in the list!!!

However, you should create the Toshiba recovery disk using the preinstalled tool called Toshiba recovery disk creator!
This should be done at the beginning before doing anything else on this notebook!!!

Hello guys,

Recently , a week ago, i bought a new Satellite A500- 1HK. I installed everything and after i installed Office 2007, after the restart my PC stack on Windows 7 Logo. Pls notice that at this time a had an external HDD connected. That was my first mistake.

My second mistake was that after 5 minutes of inactivity i powered off my PC (not shutdown) and that was it. My PC totally crashed.

My third mistake was that i did not make recovery disks from the beginning and unfortunately i dont have recovery CDS. The recovery program its on a separate partition of my laptop.I tried to solve the problem as follows: I boot the PC, pressing F8 and i went to the repair menu. At the first time after the repair nothing was happened. after this i tried to proceed to the recovery option. i choose the US language and pressed enter. Nothing was happened. the screen shows an error saying: You must log in to access sytem recovery Options. If you are having trouble logging in , please contact your computer administrator for assistance. Click ok to restart the computer.

The only thing i imagine is that the recovery partition also crashed. What can i do now? I alrweady ordered the Recovery CD's from Toshiba and expecting them during the 2 next weeks.
What is your opinion . What happened? I hope that the rexcovery programm will work with CD'S and i will face no problem any more.

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite A500 - Windows doesn't start, how to recover now?

Hi buddy,

> I alrweady ordered the Recovery CD's from Toshiba
So in my opinion your question is already answered. Jus wait for the Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings.

If HDD recovery doesn?t work, your only option is Toshiba recovery disk and now it?s time to wait for it. I?m sure you will get the disk as fast as possible.

Good luck! :)

Hi all, because the system was running slow I have decided to restore the system using the system restore DVD (1,2). The problem is that I did not saved anything from drive D and after the restore all the files were deleted. My logic was sure that the restore would deal only with the drive C (system disk) and leave the drive D as it is, but I was so wrong.

There is a way to recover some or all the lost data?

Please help me out. Thanks.

Answer:Satellite A500-1CO - lost data after system restore

Hi mate

Unfortunately, I think there is not much to do now.
The Recovery DVD sets the notebook back to the factory settings and therefore this disk formats the whole HDD and also all partitions and therefore you will loose all data if you don?t backup this before starting this procedure.

You should read the user manual or information before starting such recovery. :(

I get a disk read error when I try to boot my Sat Pro M30 running XP Pro, just after the In Touch with Toshiba screen.

Using the Revovery DVD that came with the computer when purchased and entering advanced mode I'm trying to use check local Image File. It doesn't seem to find any Image file. Is it possible to recover or rebuild image file?

There are some data I would like to recover from the HD so I'm trying to avoid reinstalling the system until I've recovered the files.

Have tried to read from the HD using a cabinette and a new NP running Vista but it didn't work. Is there a general problem reading a XP HD from VISTA?

Any suggestions how to recover the data would be very much appreciated!

Answer:Satellite Pro M30 - how to recover the data?

cabinette ? Do you mean "USB Hard Disk Caddy" ?

To recover your data, you can connect the HDD using a USB Adapter to another PC running XP or Vista. The drive should show up as a Drive letter (such as E: Drive), and you will be able to copy the files.

When you say "but it didn't work", what was the problem exactly?

Hello all
I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-110

The question is how can I recover my laptop with the recovery DVD without lose any data located in the hard disk drive?

Answer:Satellite L300-110 - How to recover without loosing data on the HDD?

A recovery installation from the recovery disk without loosing data on the HDD isn?t possible. If you use the Toshiba recovery disk the whole HDD will be formatted so you must backup the data first.

The only way I know is to use the HDD recovery function in the advanced boot menu. The HDD recovery function formats only the first partition of the notebook and all data that you have stored on the second partition are available after recovery.

On switching on my laptop yesterday I was faced with a blue screen error message which even after running chkdisk keeps on appearing, even when rebooting in safe mode.

The problem is I only have Toshiba recovery disks (not an XP disk - XP was pre-installed on the laptop) and they say on them using the recovery disk wipes the computer and I need to recover data on the hard drive before reformatting.

I've taken the laptop to the local repair centre and they say they have to reformat and dont do data recovery.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

In my opinion there are two solutions. Either try to obtain WXP installations CD and see if you can repair it using WXP repair option or use delivered recovery media and make a clean OS installation. After doing this you will have ?factory setting? again and everything will be OK again.

Basically, my laptop has been stuck in a start-up repair loop so my only option is to use the recovery CD. However, I have some files which I did not back up before my laptop decided to fail on me. Is there a way in which I can recover these files whilst simultaneously fixing my laptop ?

I am running Windows Vista SP1.

Thank you for any help,

Answer:Satellite A210-11K - Can I recover my data before using the recovery disk?

You can backup your data if you put the HDD in an external HDD case. Then you can connect it to another notebook or PC and you can save the data on it or burn it on a DVD.
That?s all!

Such external HDD cases are very cheap. I have bought my external HDD case from eBay and it?s working well.

But there is no other way to save the data because the Toshiba recovery disk wipes the whole HDD and all on the HDD will be erased.

I will try to help you.
> 1 I?d like to reinstall vista without formatting D partition (where my data is)
>Find this guide for HDD recovery procedure
>What steps should I follow?
As far as I know on second HDD partition in folder HDDRecovery is saved recovery image. When you start HDD recovery installation (F8 at start-up) recovery image from partition D will be installed on partition C. In this case partition D will not be deleted. Just partition C will be formatted before recovery image installation starts.
Just use F8 option and go to ?repair my computer?. Just follow menu on the screen and choose option ?Recovery of factory default software?.
> 2 If HDD is defective, how can I re-install supplied OS (vista) to a new HDD ?
After reading this question I see you didn?t read user?s manuals document. You should create recovery media (recovery DVD) and this recovery DVD you can use for recovery image installation if there is some problem with HDD or you want to install original recovery image on new HDD.
> 3 Unrelated to the above, can I update to Windows 7 (clean install) 32 or 64bit version?
Of course you can do this. Visit please Toshiba download page on and check if all drivers, tools and utilities are available there. Of course before you do this, create recovery DVD.

If you have more questions you are welcome.

Dear Friends.
Hope this finds you well!
I'm not certain this is in the best forum, but it is a Windows 7 computer
I was trying to do another sets of DVD's from existing MP4 files from a SanDisk Ultra 32GB card. These would then be used with DVD Flick and ImgBurn to make the DVD's. The first(2) DVD's worked well but somehow a few of the files were not copied entirely. So, I was redoing these again to make certain I had ALL the files for the next (2) DVD's.
These are files my older brother entrusted to me for me to convert them to a DVD format. They are files of his daughters nearly entire basketball season [frames] of about 70 files and were sentimental to him and his daughter.
I feel personally responsible to correct this if it is at all possible!? It could get ugly
It was an honest error on my part as I mistakenly deleted what was titled Video 100 on the SanDisk which contained all these MP4 files. I didn't realize I was removing them from the SanDisk. I'm hoping there is a free date recovery app I could use for this one application so that an expensive license would not be required!?
Thank You in advance for your care, compassion and cooperation. I'm stuck in the mud...

Satellite A500-02F costs about 10% more than Satellite A500-025.

Is the Satellite A500-02F much better and worth the extra money or are they basically the same . The Satellite A500-02F has a T6066 chip compared to T6065 in the Satellite A500-025 much difference?

The Satellite A500-02F has DDR3 memory, will this make much difference? Any other differences?

Answer:Difference between Satellite A500-025 and A500-02F

Hi junglo,

I think you have already answered the question yourself. The Satellite A500-02F has a faster CPU and DDR3 memory. It should be a little bit faster in programs they need a high CPU performance and in games for example.

It?s also depending on the programs that you want to use but I would choose the faster model. I don?t buy every year a new notebook so I would choose the faster one and 10% difference isn?t so much. ;)

I just put my 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SD Card into my laptop and nearly had a heart attack. When I go into the folder, none of my photos/videos are visible. The strange thing is, Windows tells me there is 13.4 GB free of 29.7 GB. I took some pics just there to see if it still functions and it does, I can see the 4 pics I just took. What are the main differences between the L505-144, L555-11K and A500-1GL?

They are the same price and seem to be very similar, with only small differences in processing power, graphics card and sound.

Which is the best model?

Answer:Re: Differences between Satellite L505-144, L555-11K and Satellite A500-1GL

I think you should take a look on the Toshiba notebook specification page and should compare both notebooks:

*Satellite L505-144*

*Satellite A500-1GL*

Satellite L505-144 has been released in UK and the Satellite A500-1GL has been released in Germany.

The L505-144 supports faster and better CPU, it has been delivered with Win 7 32bit and 64bit. It supports the nVidia instead of ATI GPU but the HDD is smaller 320Gb instead of 500GB?

Hi Forumites,

I've been trying my darndest to understand how a computer can possibly sync correctly with the user, when there is no instruction book on how to load all of the supposed software this computer comes with.

I can't link my phone and the A500 together via bluetooth. The stickers on the bottom of the computer state that this service is available on this computer, but when I follow the "NO" help files, (control panel, type in bluetooth and click on things) the options that "help" gives me simply do not exist.

The specifications state that this computer comes with Picassa software (photo editing), but where is it exactly? It's certainly not in the programs list, it's not mentioned in the help files, it's not coming up with an answer in any search of the C:.

The support phone number is constantly engaged. Yes it answers my call, but then puts me into a constant loop of extremely boring "yadda yadda blah blah" about how great it is to own said computer, every so often asking me to leave my number so they can call me back. Hello! My number is unlisted. How can you possibly do that?

How the 'darn firey environment mentioned in religious text' is one supposed to gain assistance in such matters? Oh yes. The FAQ. Hi mate

Your posting is really long and to be honest you are speaking about different issues?
That?s confusing?

Anyway? you asked if the notebook Sat A500 supports Bluetooth.
Well, if there is an BT label on the bottom of the unit then the BT module is installed.
In order to enable to BT you have to use the FN + F8 key combination. This helps to switch between the WLan and Bluetooth!
More detains are mentioned in user manual!

Regarding the preinstalled software:
I think the Picasa2 software is preinstalled and you should see an shortcut on the desktop.

Regarding the WLan connection:
The Wlan router supports an range of IP addresses and usually you could connect different devices to the Wlan router. The IP address would be assigned automatically.
So you could connect both notebooks as the same time!

Check your WLan router manual for more details!

my Satellite A500 getting hot every day and shut down every second day.
Where is the vault and what can i do?

Answer:Satellite A500 getting hot every day

Try to clean the cooling ventilators using a compressed air spray.
Dust and debris inside the fans might prevent the air from circulation which leads to higher temperature.

You should also use the Toshiba graphic card drivers instead of any other drivers from any 3rd party pages. The drivers from Toshiba page contains an GPU overheating protection which other drivers don?t.

I got what i have to call a somehow big problem.
For a while now, my laptop (A500-14L) sometimes become too hot, and shut down automatically. I discovered it was specially the left side of the computer (i guess, display driver) which was burning up, and can sometimes manage to use the computer for a long time if i put it only half way on a table (left side on nothing...)

Today, i tried to buy a cooler (logitech), and tryed to play to starcraft 2... Well, i simply can't!!.... Cooler is not enough, and, according to a software i just downloaded, GPU fastly goes up to more than 100?C, or 230?F. It's far too hot i guess but, i don't know what to do ? What more than a cooler could I buy ? Is it usual ? My GPU is a Ati-Radeon 4650
Thank you very much for any help. As you may have guessed, it's quite frustrating....

Answer:Satellite A500 is too hot

Sounds like there is dust build up in the heatsink. Buy some Compressed Air and blow it through the vents. Also ensure you are using Toshiba supplied drivers, other drivers could overheat the system.

What you mean with *Tj* for CPU?

The notebook is equipped with Intel Core i5 430M CPU. The maximum clock speed is 2.26 GHz and 2.53 GHz maximum turbo frequency. If you run programs with high CPU usage the CPU will automatically overclocked to 2.53 GHz that will give you a performance boost. This technology is called ?Intel Turbo Boost Technology?.

I am trying to connect my Satellite A500-17X to my HD TV via HDMI Cable, but I keep getting No Signal appear on the TV screen.
Can someone tell me does this laptop support HD?
Can this laptop be connected to a TV?
Thank You.

Answer:Satellite A500-17X and HD TV

Yes, your laptop can be connected to TV. As you can see this notebook model is offered with HDMI port to allow you best video and audio signal transfer from your notebook to the TV.
HDMI port on your Satellite supports HDMI V1.3 (1080p).

Important is that you must enable right port on TV to get picture there.
So connect your notebook to the TV, enable video-in port (it can be HDMI1 or HDMI2, depending on TV) and use FN+F5 key combination to switch between notebook?s display and your TV.
In user?s manual should be explained how it works.

If you don?t have it you can download it HERE .

Has anyone ever tried installing a SanDisk SSD to a Toshiba Satellite laptop or know if these two in general are compatible or not?

Hi waelagina,

For me it sounds like that your new modules are faulty or not compatible with the computer. I mean if the old modules work properly, the RAM slots are ok and Windows is installed properly.

You should test other modules. Try Kingston modules or order pretested modules by Toshiba from an authorized service provider.

Sorry but that?s all what I can say at the moment.

My laptop began to overheat almost every 30 mins in the last couple of days and my fan is acting the exact opposite of it's original purpose. When the temp is around 40-45% the fan works at 60-70%, but when it starts to heat up and reaches 80% the fan slows down to 15-20%.

Is there anyway to manually configure the fan to keep working at 90% or something ? I just cleaned my laptop a while back (2 weeks or something.)

EDIT i do not understand why it is not working, but my guide is not putting up the pictures here.

so please refer to:

Greetings from Canada!

I have found it extremely difficult to find out how to install an SSD into my laptop.
With much research and effort, this is what I have come up with... :)

I found the May 2009 Toshiba A500 Maintenance Manual First Edition, which lays out the schematic for the NSKAA motherboards. In particular, my A500-01V (canadian) has the same motherboard; it is from 2010 with i3-330m and nVidia 310M GeForce.

In addition to the - HDD connector - ODD connector It DOES have the - SSD connector. What may make it difficult, however, to discover is that (especially for the novice user) the SSD connector is not even close to the HDD or ODD connector; it is directly left of the mouse pad. Also, it requires you to open up the bottom of the laptop in order to install the SSD.

Here is the underside of the motherboard, where all the concerned connections are. This is the NSKAA motherboard with socket 989 rPGA. Take note of the TaiTwun 7in1 card reader near the bottommost right corner; I believe there is a motherboard model that is incompatible, in fact, I don't understand it... it's what I got when i once googled A500 Toshiba motherboard...

Note that there the card reader is in a completely different position! I am not sure which time frame (?) these models are from, but this motherboard has no... Read more

Dear All

Was anyone lucky enough to get all the drivers for this model to run it on Windows XP? I've just managed to get sound & lan - no luck with chipset, graphic(nvidia drivers from their website are not working) and others.

Please please please help - honestly can't stand Windows 7. Want XP back on my laptop!

Many thanks!

Answer:Satellite A500-19X - Where can I get XP drivers?

Why you want to use this old OS (XP) on new Satellite A500? Windows XP is the past and you should be happy with preinstalled OS from Toshiba. ;)

Normally you can get all drivers on the Toshiba page: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

As you can see this model isn?t XP supported. That means you have to collect the drivers yourself. Look on external websites like Intel, Realtek, etc. or you download the drivers from another model that is equipped with similar hardware.

Good luck!

If you want to have English version you must buy Microsoft Win7 installations disc for English language.

I have to re-install the factory installed Win 7 on my Satellite A500-1DU because I am not able to install SP1.
The cause is that the product information inside Win 7 is missing.

Regarding this I like to install a new HDD with more capacity (current 400gb).

Which HDD can I install and what is the max capacity (1TB, 750gb)?

BIOS is current.

Any hint is welcome.

Thank you in advance

Answer:Satellite A500-1DU - What is HDD max capacity

From my knowledge there is no limitation in HDD capacity since the SATA controller is used and the SATA controller should support more than 400GB.

I have bought a laptop satellite A500 -1Dn and want to install Windows Xp as the second OS. Can I do it?

Answer:Windows Xp on Satellite A500

Yes, you can install Windows Xp itself on your computer but there are no drivers available for Windows Xp on Toshiba driver page. So, this procedure is useless. You can use Vmware program , it's a virtual machine and there you can install Windows Xp enviroment.
And forget to burn a recovery disk, don't postpone it!

This problem started last Sunday. My computer shut itself down 3 times in 2 hours. It was plugged at first. Then I put on the battery and kept it plugged in, thinking if it was a problem with the cable, the battery would save the computer from shutting down. But the problem still occured.

Then for 4 days, nothing happened. Now, the computer shut itself down again all of a sudden.

It is not hotter than usual. The fan always noisly worked from day one and i had it checked and found out that it was

I had iTunes, google chrome, Steam and Portal video game on at the time. Do you think I overloaded the computer or something?

Do you have any suggestions or sollutions?

Answer:Satellite A500-19W shutting down

>Do you think I overloaded the computer or something?

Well, usually the notebook would shut down automatically to protect the hardware from damage?
So yes, the higher temperature could be the reason why the notebook shuts down automatically.

Mostly the fans would not work properly due to the dust and debris in the cooling modules.
I think you should clean the cooling modules using a compressed air spray which helps you to remove dust and debris from the fans.

Check this!

I have recently puchased a Toshiba Satellite A500-19x and its a great computer but every now and then it powers itself up from cold.

I have tried testing this many times. I will use it for a while and do a "Shut Down" on windows but every now and then it powers itself up. Often I will power it down before I go sleep and when I wake up the computer is on standy by and does not required booting up when I know I performed a SHUT DOWN. I have also tried it using hybernate and various permutations but still no joy.

I tried reading a simular thread

don't this its the same but I will try to find a BIOS update file.

Does anyone know whay this is happening as it is very disheartening after spending so much money on what appeared o be a great laptop

Thanks in advance. Kuldip

Answer:Satellite A500-19X - Powers up itself

Hi mate,

I had a similar problem on my notebook that it powers on itself. So I went into BIOS and disabled the following ?features:
-Wake up on LAN
-Wake up on Keyboard
-USB Sleep & Charge

Now this didn?t happen anymore and so I could save a little bit battery power.

Furthermore the FAQ section here shows also an interesting article:
[What should I do, if my notebook starts up alone at 8:20 o' clock every morning? |]

So try also updating the BIOS. You can find it on the Toshiba European driver download page. :)

I have a Satellite A500. It keeps freezing.

Sometimes it will boot when turned on, but then as soon as I select a program to open, it freezes.
I cannot do anything. I cant control alt delete to open task manager. The only thing I can do is turn off.
Then when I turn it back on, it asks to start in safe mode, I say yes, but the same thing happens.

Sometimes it will start up and you can go into outlook and check a couple of emails, and think it is working fine, then it stops and says not responding. Then I go to explorer and the same thing happens.
I try task manager, but it wont come up.

So I have to turn off again. It is very frustrating.
I have Norton installed and nothing comes up to say there is a virus issue.
I don't have any error messages, it just stops working.

Please help!!!!!

Answer:Satellite Pro A500 keeps freezing

Does the same happen when you start it in safe mode? Test it please. Play a bit with some options or applications.

Since when have you noticed this behaviour?
On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen. It will be interesting to know how your notebook works with ?factory settings? so if possible back-up all your data and install OS again using original recovery installation disc.

A lot of people have complained about the noise of the fans on these laptops and time and time again they are told to clean them.
In many cases the laptops were new. Mine is new and makes a noise so *PLEASE DO NOT* tell me to clean it.
This is not what's causing the problem.

There is an issue with noisy fans on this laptop and I noticed it was an issue on earlier laptops in this series too.
Those users managed to get Toshiba to take note and eventually release a BIOS update to fix the problem.

Please can someone from Toshiba take this problem seriously too so users of the A500 GM, GL models can also receive a solution to this noisy fan.

If you own this laptop and suffer from this problem then please add your name below.

Answer:Re: Satellite A500-GL- noisy fan

Noisy fan? You mean the cooling module run too fast or what?
The cooling module would run faster and longer if the internal notebook temperature would be too high.
You can control the notebook performance and cooling in Win 7 power management!

Take a look here:

It?s about Vista but the settings are very similar in Win 7

PS: A friend of mine is an A500 owner and the cooling modules work as usual?

A500 series have a lot of problems!
Fan problem was sovled after 6 months with a simple BIOS update, speaker noise exists and no support from Toshiba!

I own a Satellite A500 PSAR3A-026002. It has BIOS version 1.50, on the Toshiba website it shows the latest version as 1.90. I'd like to know what has been changed from 1.50 to 1.90 but can't find the information anywhere. Just wondering if anyone could tell me the changes or point me to a website that has them.

Not planning on updating BIOS at this stage as everything is running fine, just curious as to what they updated, fixed or added.

Answer:Satellite A500 - What are the changes in BIOS 1.90

Such information is not published on the Toshiba European driver page.
But you can visit the Toshiba US page.
I found some of the Satellite A500 series and the details about the BIOS versions.
But at this time the BIOS 1.9 is not available on US page? Just the v1.8.

However, if your notebook is running properly I would not recommend changing anything.

I got a Satellite A500 (Windows7) which I can't shut down.

-) Normally to shut down the laptop I go to the 'Windows' symbol on the bottom left hand corner of the screen and choose the 'shut down' option. This shut down option doesn't respond. Yesterday I clicked on 'shut down' several times but it just doesn't respond. I gave up and just 'hibernated' the laptop.
-) I ran a virus check to make sure everything was ok from point of view and it is.
-) There are no background programms running.
-) Other than the issue with the shut down everything is running fine (as far as I can tell).
-) Recently I also have a red cross across the battery symbol warning me that the battery doesn't hold charges properly and should be replaced - I assume the two are not connected?

I'm a rather basic user (surfing the net, up/downloading music/photos), so there are no 'hightech' things installed or going on in any way. I would really appreciate your help guys!

Kind regards

Answer:Cannot shut down my Satellite A500

I don?t know where you got this notebook but if you want to start to use it for private usage I recommend you to start to use it with clean preinstalled operating system.
Install original recovery image using HDD recovery option or using recovery disc if previous user have created it.

After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS and ?factory settings?. Everything should be OK and you can configure it how do you like it and also be sure that there is no some virus or anything else that can disturb you.

Unfortunately there is no much you can do about it. Cooling fan is controlled automatically. I don?t know which power options have you changed but try please to change option for cooling method. You can find it in advanced power options > Toshiba power saver > Cooling method.
Use option ?Battery optimized?. This should reduce cooling fan activity.

I have recently purchased a Toshiba A500 1GL. No sooner had I started it the fan kicked in which is very very noisy and continuous.
I thought it might have been a fault so had the laptop replaced due to it being under 28 days old.

The new laptop is doing the same, the fan is so noisy.
I can not concentrate on working and as such feel that I will not use the laptop.

I have two other Toshiba laptops and neither make any where near as much noise and are not on as often.
Has any one any ideas?

Answer:Satellite A500-1GL - Noisy Fan

Hi mate

Fan activities depend on the heat dissipation!
There is a simply explanation; the stronger the CPU and GPU, the higher heat dissipation and higher temperature which requires stronger and faster fans!

So don?t wonder about this fact!
What you can do is to enable the Eco utility.
You can also change some settings and option in Win 7 power management!

You can find and nice How To here:

Very interesting is the option called: TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings -> Cooling Method

I would really need some help. Since nobody from the forums in our country know what exactly is wrong with my laptop this is my final option. Last time my laptop didn't work they charged 75? just to change the keyboard:-o i still have it under warranty but anyway thats just too expensive.

So lets get to the problem. My LCD doesn't work as it should for 2 months now. But recently it got way worse. I have to move my screen to a certain position for it to work correctly. If not, I have horizontal lines all over my screen, or it freezes a bit. But since 2 weeks ago it doesn't start every time (it starts just the screen doesn't work), if the screen is not put in the correct position from the moment i press the power button. It wont recognize it anymore. Sometimes i have to put a little bit of pressure on the screen(sometimes it helps), because if it doesn't recognize it right away it wont recognize it at all later. It works totally fine on my external display.

Could it be the cable connecting the motherboard and the screen? If it is how hard is it to fix it?

I would be extremely happy for every answer and help i could get! i asked everybody and nobody know:(

Answer:Satellite A500-13F - LCD problems

Hi apaljapaz,

Normally if the screen works only when it?s in a certain position it means the cable has a loose connection? So my personal opinion is that the internal LCD cable needs replacing?
It?s strange that the LCD isn?t working anymore but this could be also caused by the cable?

Have you already connected an external monitor?
If it?s working properly the internal graphic card is ok and it?s related to LCD itself or cable.

In your case I would replace the LCD cable and see what happens. It?s a lot of cheaper than LCD ;)

Hello everyone.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite A500-18R (Windows 7 64-bits) in January. During the first half of year do not use it too much, but in these last 3-4 months I've experience several problems. I would like to know if someone has experienced the same and also can help me:

# When I turn off wifi antenna from the switch on the front of the laptop and afert i turn on again, if I try to find a wireless network Windows tells me that wireless functionality is not active (I have to go to the Control Panel to reset the device)
# When I play music from Windows Media Player, Winamp, Traktor ... the music sounds like "slowed". I even tried to plug my external USB soundcard (ESI U46 XL) and the result is the same ...
# The laptop battery is consumed even when off. I have had several laptops and this never happened ...
# When i try to burn a blank CD, most times It do not recognize the disk as empty. I know this is not a strange event, but I tested with many brands and only recognized very few (i think isn't normal)
# Another problem with DVD/CD drive is that not recognize me some original CDs. The last problem I had with a CD of drivers for my external sound card (not recognized).

My laptop is still on warranty, but i would like to know if someone has experienced some of this issues or if the drivers update can fix them.

Thanks a lot and sorry for my english, isn't very good.

Answer:Satellite A500-18R - Several problems

Hi Fran

Please tell us if this Win7 is your own installation or you got it with your notebook?

I will try to offer some answers:
# When you switch WLAN to ON you must always check if WLAN LED is ON. You can leave WLAN switch to ON position and enable/disable WLAN module using FN+F8 key combination
# This phenomena is not known to me but what you can try is to check for newer sound driver.
# This is normal that over night battery looses a little bit capacity. If you leave it for longer time off it can lose up to 25% capacity. No reason for panic.
# I don?t know which burning software do you use and what you are doing exactly. It is not easy to say what is wrong there.
# ?some CDs? is pretty general statement and not so good base for discussion. Which CDs? Music CDs, software CDs? It can be that they are bad quality and cannot be readable. It is not possible to offer precise answer to this.

If you have some friend with very good PC knowledge put your notebook in front of him and let him see what happen exactly.

On this virtual way is not so easy to give precise answers.

I earlier tried to start my laptop and I got absolutely nothing. It's not a power cable issue, and I have tried turning it on with the battery removed etc. Nothing seems to work.

I did briefly get it to turn on and a message came up saying it did not start correctly and was going to perform a system restore to take it back to it's last working point. After 20 seconds or so it shut itself down and has not started again since.

I'm worried it's a hardware issue.

Hoping someone can provide with me some insight. I'm buying a new computer and other than Harmon Kardon speakers, I don't seem to see a huge difference between the L500 and the A500 series. To be more specific, here are the models I'm looking at. As you can see, they differ in price quite a bit, so what's the story? Is there a huge difference in the system other than the speakers?

And yes, I'm aware of all the customization options, but even if they have the EXACT same specs, that A series is still more expensive. Why?

Answer:Satellite A500 or L500 - which is better?

I would go for the A500, because its generally a higher end model with faster components.

The A500 has an Intel CPU and dedicated ATI graphics, compared to the L500D which has an AMD CPU and a slower ATI Graphics chip.

Hey, i've had my A500 for almost a year now, and i've had to downgrade to windows XP, but I can't find any drivers for it, is there anywhere I can get them from?

Answer:Need WXP drivers for Satellite A500-15N

I have checked Toshiba support page and for this notebook model WXP drivers are not available. This model is not supported for WXP.

Only chance for you is to use drivers from supported models but with same or similar hardware configuration.
It will be hard work to find it out. You will probably not be able to have full configured notebook but I?m pretty sure you will be able to make good hardware configuration with some missing Toshiba specific stuff but I think it is not so important.

For instance:

-GM45 chipset driver > you can use THIS
-display driver ATI M92XT > you can use THIS one
-sound driver is Realtek ALC272

So you must see how to find all them.

Answer:My Satellite A500 does not charge

I assume you are meaning the battery.
The battery does not charge but the notebook can be powered up? is it right?

Hmm? sounds like an battery issue?
Try this;
Remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor
Leave the notebook powered off for a longer time.
Then put the battery again into the notebook, connect AC adaptor and check how it works.

You could remove the battery from notebook and could use the notebook without the battery the whole day long?
Next day try the battery again?

If all this workarounds would not help, then you should get in contact with an local ASP in order to check the battery.

Use this part number and check exact specification. Compatible Kingston RAM module has part number KTT1066D3/4G.

I recently bought a Toshiba A500-134 notebook, and I have two problems with that.
First, the bigger: the fans are always going pratically. In this moment, the tempertures are the followings (I checked with the Everest):
CPU: 37
CPU 1st core: 36C
CPU 2nd core: 36C
GPU DispIO: 46C
GPU MemIO: 44C
Notebook's temperature: 34C

The fans speed (Toshiba utility): 73%, and sometimes higher (and that's waaay to loud)
Is it normal? A tried another (same type) notebook, and seems it makes the same things. It doesn't make anything, only the Vista's desktop is running, and the fans are always going.

The second problem is a high pitch noise, coming from the speakers. I think, the CPU's speed affect it. When I change the notebook to powersaving mode, the noise is quiter, or it disappears.

Answer:Satellite A500-134 fan problem

Hi buddy

To be honest I don?t see any problems with your fan or notebook temperature.
The CPU and GPU temperature seems to be low and it?s nothing unusual.

The cooling modules performance can be changed in the Vista?s power management:

Hello there,

my notebook always changes the speed of the fan from 70% to 90%.

I recently installed the latest Bios version but the problem didnt solve. As i am writing this text Toshiba PC Health Monitor says that the CPU-Temperature is 40% and the speed of the fan is between 80% and 90%. I set my notebook to energy saving mode but why is the fan working at such a high speed?

Is there anybody who has the same problem or is it just me?

Answer:Satellite A500-13W - Fan changes speed

Have you checked if battery optimized cooling method is set in Windows power plan settings?

May I ask you if you use the preinstalled Windows OS from Toshiba?

Overheating can be also caused by the display driver so it?s important that you use the newest Toshiba display driver version.

I have a problem at the moment. I'm trying to play a game on my A500-12W.

The game is not that demanding for this kind of laptop, we are talking about witcher from 2007. After about 10 min my latop switches itself off. Looks to me like its overheated but cant really find a reason why. The fan speed is actually stuck at around 80-90% all the time even if there are nearly no programs running. I have a dual core 2,53GHz, 4GB RAM and 1GB radeon mobility 4600hd in it so I dont thing that the game is too demanding.

Can someone help?

Answer:Satellite A500-12W - Switches itself off

The typical recommendation in your case:

1 Clean your computer using the compressed air spray to blow out the dust from the cooling module that can be clogged and causes the system shutdown due to overheating.
2 Choose the ,, Maximum Performance ,, in cooling method in high performance power plan.

And as addition, check what the Gpu driver you' ve installed. It should be a Toshiba pretested driver that a little bit modified with overheating protection.

Bought a new A500 a couple of months ago, installed printer software nothing else and every day I get at least 1 blue screen, sometimes 2 back to back. Removed printer software and carried out system restore but still the same.

Contacted Toshiba tech but not much help, said they could collect the machine but if it turned out to be a software issue then I would be charged!

Not sure what info is needed from the event viewer for advise?

Any advise would be appreciated. Cheers

Answer:Satellite A500-17X - BSOD appear every day

It would be interesting to know which BSOD you get exactly. Maybe you can post this information and search a little bit with Google? You can do this yourself ;)

But of course, if it?s a software problem you have to pay for it. Only hardware issues are covered by warranty.

If you use the Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings and the error still occurs, it seems to be a hardware issue.

J just bought a new A500 and i think its just great the only problem is that i dont like windows 7.
I want to revert to windows xp.

Can i do this and still keep all the toshiba features?

Answer:Got new Satellite A500/026 but i want Windows XP

If you want to use Win XP then you will need to install the Win XP using the clean MS Windows XP CD.
But the point is that Win XP are not available for A500 because this is a new machine and newer notebooks are preinstalled always with newer Win 7.

You will have to search for Win XP drivers at your own hand and you will not be able to use all the preinstalled tools by Toshiba? such tools are available only in Toshiba image and are not ready for download.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to know if anyone knew when will the Satellite A500 come out in Europe (France more particularly) because I was going to buy the A300D-219 ( [ ge=1] )

But if the A500 comes out in 1 month it maybe doesn't worth it, I need it for my studies, so for september...

Thanks !

Answer:When does the Satellite A500 comes out in Europe?

I read somewhere on certain pages that the Satellite A500 should be released in July 09?.
So maybe you could be able to order it end of July or beginning of August

But I recommend asking your local dealer for more details?

recently purhased a Toshiba Satellite A500-19w laptop. I found out that the modem port is sealed shut. (with plastic covering) and there is no way to open it.
Do all the A500-19w have this same problem. Plus i did not receive a remote with this laptop. Should that come with the package?

Answer:Few questions about Satellite A500-19W

Satellite A500 is offered with several different hardware configurations and it is not easy to say all of them are the same.
You must also understand that notebooks are ?country specific? product and I know that all platforms will not be offered in every country.
So it can be that all A500 offered in your country will not have modem port.

To be honest in year 2010 modem will not be used so often and my personal opinion is that 90% notebook users will not miss it.

With remote control is the same. if specification for your model doesn?t offer info about it as part of the package then all must be clear for you.

I would like to connect my Satellite A500-134 to a CRT TV set. The output ports are D-SUB and HDMI. The input ports on my TV set are RCA and Scart.
Is there any possibility to watch movies on the tv set?

Thanks for your reply.

Answer:Satellite A500 - How to connect to TV?

If you want connect this notebook to a TV you have to use an adaptor, e. g. D-SUB to RCA.
Here is a picture what I mean: [D-SUB to RCA|]

On my Satellite L300 I use such a D-SUB to RCA adaptor and it works without any problems. I’m very satisfied with this solution.

I have an A500 about 12months old which does not boot up.

The battery charged light is showing white and the on AC power light is on as well.
When the "power on" button is pressed and released the laptop ON light flashes briefly and then the battery light turns orange briefly and the ON light turns off.

The battery has been removed from the case and it has been fully discharged and it still will not power up with or without the battery. It has been plugged into another toshiba power supply with the same results.

The difficulty powering up has been seen two days ago. After about 10 minutes on charge it eventually powered up.

I saw a post where the chap had discharged the internal cmos memory and it eventually came up - would that have anything to do with this?

Any clues from anybody?

Answer:Satellite A500 does not boot up

I think it?s something wrong with the motherboard or motherboard part.
The point is that notebook should power up even if the battery is empty and the ac adaptor is connected? so possibly it?s something wrong with the memory or power supply electronic on the motherboard.

I would recommend checking the memory parts firstly. Remove one module and try to boot up the unit using only one module.

Of course this can not help you too.. so in such case it could be a serious motherboard issue...

Hey guys,

I have a Satellite A500-02S running on Windows 7 Home Premium.

So I got a virus today, and here's what happened:

1. At the task bar, I normally have Libaries pinned there, that icon became a white notepad, and when I clicked it, it said it wasn't there anymore and asked if I wanted to remove. I clicked yes.

2. Many failed attempts to pin it back. when I right click the libraries icon in the taskbar, the only option that shows up is "Close this window", whereas before it would have a jumplist and a few more options like "pin this to taskbar"

3. I looked on line to see if I could find a way to fix it, and found some similar solutions where I had to make sure IsShortcut.lnk was still in the registry, which it was. So no use there.

4. Restarted my computer and after having typed my pw to log in, a blank white screen showed. I freaked out at first, but then googled this on another computer and found that explorer didn't run automatically.

5. Opened task manager, tried to run explorer.exe, BUT IT WASN'T THERE. (by there I mean at C:/Windows/explorer.exe

6. Regardless I found another "explorer" link in another folder to run, and was able to start explorer that way.

7. Since then I have used Norton 360 to do a full system scan, Malbyteware to do another full system scan (which removed a few viruses in the registry etc), but after a restart all I get is just a white screen.

8. Tried a system restore to a point fr... Read more

My serial number is 1A190982K.

I've been given a number for the LCD cable for this laptop: 6017B0201901. This isn't too easy to find from a UK supplier.

I saw another today under DC02000UD00. Is this one also right for this model?

I'm going to buy a Toshiba Satellite A500-14k , and I would like to know:
- has he got a backlight keyboard?
- has he got a "slot loading DVD drive"?
- is his telecommande really on express card format?

I precise that I'm French, and the French A500 series is maybe different.

I don't speak a good English, excuse me ;)

Have a nice day.

Answer:Questions about the Satellite A500-14k

Is this notebook already on the market in France?
I mean if nobody here can give you precise answer you can contact your local dealer or online shop to pick up info directly.

Google a little bit around. I am pretty sure you can find some dealer that can help you.
You are right about different models and I also believe all A500 will not be the same in all European countries. Please also note that this is first A500 series on the market and I also believe for French market it can be modified in the future. It is possible that in few months you will be able to find more different models in France.

In my country Satellite A500 is still not on the market. :(

My problem is the fan speed thats really high despite the fact both CPU and GPU usage is pretty low. So, at the momment while running just Toshiba's webpages on Google Chrome, MSN, Norton, some Toshiba utilities (just those that are already installed after recovering windows) and Speedfan application, last one shows 82 degrees on GPU which is marked as sort of fire sign, 1st core is 51 degrees also with a fire sign, 2nd core 55 with a fire sign, 3rd is 44 and its ok, 4th is 43 and its also ok.

Now Toshiba's PC Health Monitor shows that the fan speed is 90%, energy usage is like 35% and it says CPU's temp is 65%.Guess I should add that a laptop lays on a desk, not bed or things like that.
The thing is its really annoying working on it, having that ugly sound of the fan all the time.

Any solution?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Re: Satellite A500-1g2 overheating GPU

You should try to clean the cooling system:

If you don't have a compressed air, you can use a vacuum cleaner. (not the best solution but better than nothing :)

Hi mate,

I also don?t know why this happened but can you please post the exact BSOD code? If the Bluescreen appears, you can see a message like STOP? There you can also see the BSOD code like 0x000000

Theoretically it could be a software issue. Have you installed any 3rd party programs or have you checked the computer for viruses?

You can also try to reinstall Windows using HDD recovery option. Therefore go in advanced boot menu and select ?Repair my Computer?.

Hi there,
is it possible to upgrade my A500-19N with Bluetooth?
I do have a USB-Bluetooth dongle, but i'm not satisfied with this setup.
Thus I was wondering wheter there is a possibility to upgrade my Laptop, as many other satellite a500s DO have BT.

Kind regards

Answer:Re: Is Bluetooth upgrade on Satellite A500-19N possible?

I don't believe anyone here can give you final answer.
Generally speaking such upgrade is not easy because the whole notebook must be disassembled; BT antenna placed on the right place (behind the display) and the cable must be placed on the right place.
The question is also if the mainboard on your A500 has prepared for BT upgrade.

I am afraid for all this you need professional help and if anyone can help you about it, it is Toshiba authorized service provider in your country.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A500 00L00 with Vista x64. When I installed the SP2 I had to turn off all the services from the "msconfig", but when I turned them on back, the Fn key button stopped working and some of the touch buttons too.
So i tried to install the Value Added Package, but when I start installing, the installing program suddenly disappeared after one or two black ms-dos screens shows.

So I cant install it!
Please help!

Answer:Re: Satellite A500 - Can't install VAP on Vista x64

Before you can install new Value Added Package you have to remove the old version first. Go in control panel > Add/Remove software and choose VAP. Reboot the notebook and install the new version.

I don?t understand why you had to disable some services before you installed SP2. I have also installed SP2 on my Vista notebook but I didn?t disable anything and the update was installed successfully.

HI All

i have a satellite A500 mahcine (PSAR9A-01H001) which supposedly has an inbuilt digital tv tuner in it.

When i first got the machine it had windows 7 home - which was upgraded at work to Win 7 Prof as i needed domain access.

The thing is that there is no sign in the hardware manager of a tv tuner card and WMC reports no card installed.

Ive tried downloading and installing the drivers from the toshiba site, however it just runs and does nothing

Anybody got any clues how to get this thing running (if it in actuality exits)

Answer:Satellite A500 and TV tuner functionality

What do you mean with ?supposedly?? Has your notebook TV tuner or not?
I have tried to find exact notebook specification but unfortunately I didn?t find it.

I?ve checked Toshiba download page and was not able to find TV tuner driver so I think your notebook model (PSAR9A-01H001) doesn't have it.

By the way: if your notebook has TV tuner on the right notebook side there should be placed TV tuner jack. It should be placed between USB ports and DC in jack.

I have been trying to upgrade BIOS on my Satellite A500-1GL (PSAR9E) for a while now but I have a dead battery so cannot get past the security check at the beginning. Is there anyway way around this, as I am connected with AC power so I don't see what the problem is!! Could I have the self extracting zip files possibly.

Any help would be much appreciated as this is very frustrating!

Answer:Satellite A500-1GL - cannot upgrade BIOS

I think you will not be able to update the BIOS if your battery is dead.
The Win based BIOS update can be updated only from running Windows system and there is a security option which allow you to update the BIOS only if the notebook is connected to AC adaptor and if the battery is charged.

You could update the BIOS using an traditional BIOS version but as far as I know only an Toshiba service partner could do that.

So you?ve got two options:
Purchase a battery in order to update the BIOS using win based BIOS version or you will get in contact with an ASP in your country and will ask for BIOS update using traditional BIOS version.

But is BIOS update necessary for you?

I've got a notebook with old BIOS version and i did not update it even if new version was released.

I have a Satellite A500 and I cannot seem to get the computer to recognize the keystrokes when I am typing in my password to get into the computer. Therefore I cannot get into the computer at all. The cursor is blinking in the password box and when I click with the mouse it recognizes that function too but I can't go any further.
This has occurred a number of times now and it has been really inconvenient

Does anyone have a solution for this please? Is this to do with tapping? FN + F9 don?t work.

Answer:Re: Satellite A500 - Keyboard isn't recognized

Hi Aussie,

Do you mean the password of your Windows user account? Normally if you start the computer you can start with password enter because the cursor blinks already in password box.

Can you enter the password if you connect an external keyboard? If yes it would mean the internal keyboard is malfunctioning. Furthermore it would be interesting to know if you can access the BIOS by pressing F2 key on internal keyboard. So you can check if the problem is software related or not.

By the way: FN+F9 can only disable/enable the touchpad but not the keyboard.

Please help

Configuration Satellite A500 with Windows 7 Home

Any solution?

> I've reinstall fron the original fab the whole disk and the 2 drivers as a response on the forum but nothing clearly works!
What is original fab?
What have you installed exactly? Have you used the original Toshiba recovery disk?

Well, I think if a single key doesn?t work there is not much what you can do expect exchanging the keyboard because single keys are not replaceable.

What you can try is testing the situation with an external keyboard. Can you use the Windows key properly?
If yes the internal keyboard is malfunctioning and should be replaced from an authorized service provider they can order original Toshiba spare parts.

I plan on doing a reformat of my laptop sometime soon. If I restore windows to factory state using the backup image I made when I first got the laptop would it overwrite both the C and D drives? Or would it just overwrite the C drive?

I ask this because I use the C drive for Windows and programs and I use the D drive for all my media and games. I only need to wipe clean the C drive.

I made the backup image using Toshiba's media recovery program.

Answer:Satellite A500 - Reformat question

I hope I will be able to explain to you how it works.

For recovery image installation you have two possibilities:
# to use recovery image saved on HDD (second partition in ?HDDRecovery? folder
# to use recovery DVD that you can create alone using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery disc creator

When you use HDD recovery option - - only partition C will be formatted. All data saved on second partition will be there.

When you use created DVD for operating system installation the whole HDD will be deleted and formatted. That means you will lose all your data.

You can't change speed fan yourself as there is no option Bios. i also tried to change with some utilities like a fan speed control utility. But i couldn't handle it. maybe, one day they will release Bios with fan speed control support. :)

I have a Satellite A500 and cannot turn it on. If I plug in my charger the light comes on but still will not start.
Is this the battery?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite A500 wont turn on

If only the battery would be dead, you should still be able to use the notebook with an connected AC adaptor.
So even if the battery is not inserted, the unit should work properly.
So in such case its not battery problem.

Try this:
Remove battery, disconnect AC adaptor.
Press and hold power button 30 sec long.
Now connect the battery and AC adaptor and try to power unit the unit.

If this fails, well, the next step you should be RAM check.
The best would be the usage of good tested modules?

But I?m afraid it could be an motherboard problem.

The FN key flashcards (that drop down from the top of screen) worked nicely for the first week of using this new notebook, they seemed to disappear by themselves (windows updates are the devil, so I point the finger at that) and I've spent an inordinate amount of time resolving this issue.

I have downloaded the latest TVAP and flashcard utility from Toshiba support. installed tvap and then rebooted and then ran the flash card utility installer which uninstalled the utility and then rebooted and then reran the utility installer, rebooted and still no joy.

my FN keys are still working, but without the flash card I cant see where im scrolling through wifi/bluetooth on/off.

What else can be done once tvap and flash card utility have been installed?

Answer:Re: Satellite A500 - Flash Cards don't appear

I had a similar problem that Flash Cards didn?t appear anymore... As far as I know it was related to an additional software that I installed? If I remember rightly, it was VMware?

So if you install this program remove it. Furthermore make sure that Flash Cards Support Utility and Value Added Package will be started properly.

Before you install newest versions, remove the old one firstly and start CCleaner to clean up the registry.

I hope it helps!
