Satellite A500 or L500 - which is better?

Question: Satellite A500 or L500 - which is better?

Hoping someone can provide with me some insight. I'm buying a new computer and other than Harmon Kardon speakers, I don't seem to see a huge difference between the L500 and the A500 series. To be more specific, here are the models I'm looking at. As you can see, they differ in price quite a bit, so what's the story? Is there a huge difference in the system other than the speakers?

[] []

And yes, I'm aware of all the customization options, but even if they have the EXACT same specs, that A series is still more expensive. Why?

Preferred Solution: Satellite A500 or L500 - which is better?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite A500 or L500 - which is better?

I would go for the A500, because its generally a higher end model with faster components.

The A500 has an Intel CPU and dedicated ATI graphics, compared to the L500D which has an AMD CPU and a slower ATI Graphics chip.

Satellite A500-02F costs about 10% more than Satellite A500-025.

Is the Satellite A500-02F much better and worth the extra money or are they basically the same . The Satellite A500-02F has a T6066 chip compared to T6065 in the Satellite A500-025 much difference?

The Satellite A500-02F has DDR3 memory, will this make much difference? Any other differences?

Answer:Difference between Satellite A500-025 and A500-02F

Hi junglo,

I think you have already answered the question yourself. The Satellite A500-02F has a faster CPU and DDR3 memory. It should be a little bit faster in programs they need a high CPU performance and in games for example.

It?s also depending on the programs that you want to use but I would choose the faster model. I don?t buy every year a new notebook so I would choose the faster one and 10% difference isn?t so much. ;)

The A500-025 says that it had centrino T6500 processor while the A500-02f model has T6600 processor. Does it make a difference that one says it`s a CENTRINO processor or is there any difference...or are they both centrino but just wasn`t mentioned in the specs.

What are the main differences between the L505-144, L555-11K and A500-1GL?

They are the same price and seem to be very similar, with only small differences in processing power, graphics card and sound.

Which is the best model?

Answer:Re: Differences between Satellite L505-144, L555-11K and Satellite A500-1GL

I think you should take a look on the Toshiba notebook specification page and should compare both notebooks:

*Satellite L505-144*

*Satellite A500-1GL*

Satellite L505-144 has been released in UK and the Satellite A500-1GL has been released in Germany.

The L505-144 supports faster and better CPU, it has been delivered with Win 7 32bit and 64bit. It supports the nVidia instead of ATI GPU but the HDD is smaller 320Gb instead of 500GB?

Hi Forumites,

I've been trying my darndest to understand how a computer can possibly sync correctly with the user, when there is no instruction book on how to load all of the supposed software this computer comes with.

I can't link my phone and the A500 together via bluetooth. The stickers on the bottom of the computer state that this service is available on this computer, but when I follow the "NO" help files, (control panel, type in bluetooth and click on things) the options that "help" gives me simply do not exist.

The specifications state that this computer comes with Picassa software (photo editing), but where is it exactly? It's certainly not in the programs list, it's not mentioned in the help files, it's not coming up with an answer in any search of the C:.

The support phone number is constantly engaged. Yes it answers my call, but then puts me into a constant loop of extremely boring "yadda yadda blah blah" about how great it is to own said computer, every so often asking me to leave my number so they can call me back. Hello! My number is unlisted. How can you possibly do that?

How the 'darn firey environment mentioned in religious text' is one supposed to gain assistance in such matters? Oh yes. The FAQ. A long and really quite useless listing of answers to stupid questions any Richard Head would know. Yes I realise there are people out there not qualified to operate an alarm clock, but really ...

Answer:Software gone on Satellite A500 / Satellite A80 on net, but no pages avail

Hi mate

Your posting is really long and to be honest you are speaking about different issues?
That?s confusing?

Anyway? you asked if the notebook Sat A500 supports Bluetooth.
Well, if there is an BT label on the bottom of the unit then the BT module is installed.
In order to enable to BT you have to use the FN + F8 key combination. This helps to switch between the WLan and Bluetooth!
More detains are mentioned in user manual!

Regarding the preinstalled software:
I think the Picasa2 software is preinstalled and you should see an shortcut on the desktop.

Regarding the WLan connection:
The Wlan router supports an range of IP addresses and usually you could connect different devices to the Wlan router. The IP address would be assigned automatically.
So you could connect both notebooks as the same time!

Check your WLan router manual for more details!

I need a new keyboard for my L500 and found out, that the keyboad of the P200 (and some other models) seems to be the same (105 keys, num pad, 2 win keys). Are those keyboards 100% compatible or do they just look the same?

Answer:Satellite L500 and Satellite P200 - compatible keyboards?

In my opinion this question is for Toshiba service and not for user-to-user forum.

Anyway I think that both keyboards are not the same and you should order 100% identical keyboard designed for your notebook model.

Question is: why do you look for keyboards for old notebook models if you can order new one for L500.
On eBay you can get it quite affordable.

hi there!!

i had a toshiba satellite a300 that unfortunately died... i want to take the hard disk drive from it an put it on my cousin's toshiba satellite l500 laptop...
I siply put it to l500 but it stacks at a point that shows again and again something about media test and more...

What i'm supposed to do?
Te strange (to me that i'm not very computer guy) is that at bios setting shows the model of the hard disk...
I mean that the l500 recognises the drive...please help me...

thanks in advance..

Answer:HDD swop from Satellite A300 to Satellite L500

Satellite A300 supports the same HDD like a Satellite L500. Both use the SATA HDD therefore the inserted HDD should work.
Its good sign, that the HDD is visible in BIOS. This means that HDD is recognized and in good condition.

I?m wondering what you have done after the HDD has been inserted.
Did you try to install the system using Toshiba recovery disk or another disk?
Did you try to format the HDD firstly?

Try to boot form the system disk and format the HDD firstly.
Then follow with system installation

I am trying to connect my Satellite A500-17X to my HD TV via HDMI Cable, but I keep getting No Signal appear on the TV screen.
Can someone tell me does this laptop support HD?
Can this laptop be connected to a TV?
Thank You.

Answer:Satellite A500-17X and HD TV

Yes, your laptop can be connected to TV. As you can see this notebook model is offered with HDMI port to allow you best video and audio signal transfer from your notebook to the TV.
HDMI port on your Satellite supports HDMI V1.3 (1080p).

Important is that you must enable right port on TV to get picture there.
So connect your notebook to the TV, enable video-in port (it can be HDMI1 or HDMI2, depending on TV) and use FN+F5 key combination to switch between notebook?s display and your TV.
In user?s manual should be explained how it works.

If you don?t have it you can download it HERE .

If youhave more questions you are welcome.

my Satellite A500 getting hot every day and shut down every second day.
Where is the vault and what can i do?

Answer:Satellite A500 getting hot every day

Try to clean the cooling ventilators using a compressed air spray.
Dust and debris inside the fans might prevent the air from circulation which leads to higher temperature.

You should also use the Toshiba graphic card drivers instead of any other drivers from any 3rd party pages. The drivers from Toshiba page contains an GPU overheating protection which other drivers don?t.

I got what i have to call a somehow big problem.
For a while now, my laptop (A500-14L) sometimes become too hot, and shut down automatically. I discovered it was specially the left side of the computer (i guess, display driver) which was burning up, and can sometimes manage to use the computer for a long time if i put it only half way on a table (left side on nothing...)

Today, i tried to buy a cooler (logitech), and tryed to play to starcraft 2... Well, i simply can't!!.... Cooler is not enough, and, according to a software i just downloaded, GPU fastly goes up to more than 100?C, or 230?F. It's far too hot i guess but, i don't know what to do ? What more than a cooler could I buy ? Is it usual ? My GPU is a Ati-Radeon 4650
Thank you very much for any help. As you may have guessed, it's quite frustrating....

Answer:Satellite A500 is too hot

Sounds like there is dust build up in the heatsink. Buy some Compressed Air and blow it through the vents. Also ensure you are using Toshiba supplied drivers, other drivers could overheat the system.

I got diferent numbers in Aida and HwMonitor and I wnat to know which 1 is real (if any is;bouth programs have customization)?!

Answer:Satellite A500-1GH - TJ max for this CPU?

Hi Proday,

What you mean with *Tj* for CPU?

The notebook is equipped with Intel Core i5 430M CPU. The maximum clock speed is 2.26 GHz and 2.53 GHz maximum turbo frequency. If you run programs with high CPU usage the CPU will automatically overclocked to 2.53 GHz that will give you a performance boost. This technology is called ?Intel Turbo Boost Technology?.

All specifications about this CPU you can find on Intel page directly:

Hello everyone.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite A500-18R (Windows 7 64-bits) in January. During the first half of year do not use it too much, but in these last 3-4 months I've experience several problems. I would like to know if someone has experienced the same and also can help me:

# When I turn off wifi antenna from the switch on the front of the laptop and afert i turn on again, if I try to find a wireless network Windows tells me that wireless functionality is not active (I have to go to the Control Panel to reset the device)
# When I play music from Windows Media Player, Winamp, Traktor ... the music sounds like "slowed". I even tried to plug my external USB soundcard (ESI U46 XL) and the result is the same ...
# The laptop battery is consumed even when off. I have had several laptops and this never happened ...
# When i try to burn a blank CD, most times It do not recognize the disk as empty. I know this is not a strange event, but I tested with many brands and only recognized very few (i think isn't normal)
# Another problem with DVD/CD drive is that not recognize me some original CDs. The last problem I had with a CD of drivers for my external sound card (not recognized).

My laptop is still on warranty, but i would like to know if someone has experienced some of this issues or if the drivers update can fix them.

Thanks a lot and sorry for my english, isn't very good.

Answer:Satellite A500-18R - Several problems

Hi Fran

Please tell us if this Win7 is your own installation or you got it with your notebook?

I will try to offer some answers:
# When you switch WLAN to ON you must always check if WLAN LED is ON. You can leave WLAN switch to ON position and enable/disable WLAN module using FN+F8 key combination
# This phenomena is not known to me but what you can try is to check for newer sound driver.
# This is normal that over night battery looses a little bit capacity. If you leave it for longer time off it can lose up to 25% capacity. No reason for panic.
# I don?t know which burning software do you use and what you are doing exactly. It is not easy to say what is wrong there.
# ?some CDs? is pretty general statement and not so good base for discussion. Which CDs? Music CDs, software CDs? It can be that they are bad quality and cannot be readable. It is not possible to offer precise answer to this.

If you have some friend with very good PC knowledge put your notebook in front of him and let him see what happen exactly.

On this virtual way is not so easy to give precise answers.

Hey guys,

I have a Satellite A500-02S running on Windows 7 Home Premium.

So I got a virus today, and here's what happened:

1. At the task bar, I normally have Libaries pinned there, that icon became a white notepad, and when I clicked it, it said it wasn't there anymore and asked if I wanted to remove. I clicked yes.

2. Many failed attempts to pin it back. when I right click the libraries icon in the taskbar, the only option that shows up is "Close this window", whereas before it would have a jumplist and a few more options like "pin this to taskbar"

3. I looked on line to see if I could find a way to fix it, and found some similar solutions where I had to make sure IsShortcut.lnk was still in the registry, which it was. So no use there.

4. Restarted my computer and after having typed my pw to log in, a blank white screen showed. I freaked out at first, but then googled this on another computer and found that explorer didn't run automatically.

5. Opened task manager, tried to run explorer.exe, BUT IT WASN'T THERE. (by there I mean at C:/Windows/explorer.exe

6. Regardless I found another "explorer" link in another folder to run, and was able to start explorer that way.

7. Since then I have used Norton 360 to do a full system scan, Malbyteware to do another full system scan (which removed a few viruses in the registry etc), but after a restart all I get is just a white screen.

I earlier tried to start my laptop and I got absolutely nothing. It's not a power cable issue, and I have tried turning it on with the battery removed etc. Nothing seems to work.

I did briefly get it to turn on and a message came up saying it did not start correctly and was going to perform a system restore to take it back to it's last working point. After 20 seconds or so it shut itself down and has not started again since.

I'm worried it's a hardware issue.

You are right. You can upgrade Ram up to 8GB.
In your case there must be some compatibility problem. According notebook specification compatible RAM for your machine is 4GB DDR3-1066 - PA3677U-1M4G.

Very good and high quality RAM modules you can also order by Kingston -

This problem started last Sunday. My computer shut itself down 3 times in 2 hours. It was plugged at first. Then I put on the battery and kept it plugged in, thinking if it was a problem with the cable, the battery would save the computer from shutting down. But the problem still occured.

Then for 4 days, nothing happened. Now, the computer shut itself down again all of a sudden.

It is not hotter than usual. The fan always noisly worked from day one and i had it checked and found out that it was

I had iTunes, google chrome, Steam and Portal video game on at the time. Do you think I overloaded the computer or something?

Do you have any suggestions or sollutions?

Answer:Satellite A500-19W shutting down

>Do you think I overloaded the computer or something?

Well, usually the notebook would shut down automatically to protect the hardware from damage?
So yes, the higher temperature could be the reason why the notebook shuts down automatically.

Mostly the fans would not work properly due to the dust and debris in the cooling modules.
I think you should clean the cooling modules using a compressed air spray which helps you to remove dust and debris from the fans.

I recently bought a Toshiba A500-134 notebook, and I have two problems with that.
First, the bigger: the fans are always going pratically. In this moment, the tempertures are the followings (I checked with the Everest):
CPU: 37
CPU 1st core: 36C
CPU 2nd core: 36C
GPU DispIO: 46C
GPU MemIO: 44C
Notebook's temperature: 34C

The fans speed (Toshiba utility): 73%, and sometimes higher (and that's waaay to loud)
Is it normal? A tried another (same type) notebook, and seems it makes the same things. It doesn't make anything, only the Vista's desktop is running, and the fans are always going.

The second problem is a high pitch noise, coming from the speakers. I think, the CPU's speed affect it. When I change the notebook to powersaving mode, the noise is quiter, or it disappears.

Answer:Satellite A500-134 fan problem

Answer:Satellite A500-1GL - Noisy Fan

Hi mate

Fan activities depend on the heat dissipation!
There is a simply explanation; the stronger the CPU and GPU, the higher heat dissipation and higher temperature which requires stronger and faster fans!

So don?t wonder about this fact!
What you can do is to enable the Eco utility.
You can also change some settings and option in Win 7 power management!

You can find and nice How To here:

Very interesting is the option called: TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings -> Cooling Method

Greetings from Canada!

I have found it extremely difficult to find out how to install an SSD into my laptop.
With much research and effort, this is what I have come up with... :)

I found the May 2009 Toshiba A500 Maintenance Manual First Edition, which lays out the schematic for the NSKAA motherboards. In particular, my A500-01V (canadian) has the same motherboard; it is from 2010 with i3-330m and nVidia 310M GeForce.

In addition to the - HDD connector - ODD connector It DOES have the - SSD connector. What may make it difficult, however, to discover is that (especially for the novice user) the SSD connector is not even close to the HDD or ODD connector; it is directly left of the mouse pad. Also, it requires you to open up the bottom of the laptop in order to install the SSD.

Here is the underside of the motherboard, where all the concerned connections are. This is the NSKAA motherboard with socket 989 rPGA. Take note of the TaiTwun 7in1 card reader near the bottommost right corner; I believe there is a motherboard model that is incompatible, in fact, I don't understand it... it's what I got when i once googled A500 Toshiba motherboard...

Note that there the card reader is in a completely different position! I am not sure which time frame (?) these models are from, but this motherboard has no... Read more

I got a Satellite A500 (Windows7) which I can't shut down.

-) Normally to shut down the laptop I go to the 'Windows' symbol on the bottom left hand corner of the screen and choose the 'shut down' option. This shut down option doesn't respond. Yesterday I clicked on 'shut down' several times but it just doesn't respond. I gave up and just 'hibernated' the laptop.
-) I ran a virus check to make sure everything was ok from point of view and it is.
-) There are no background programms running.
-) Other than the issue with the shut down everything is running fine (as far as I can tell).
-) Recently I also have a red cross across the battery symbol warning me that the battery doesn't hold charges properly and should be replaced - I assume the two are not connected?

I'm a rather basic user (surfing the net, up/downloading music/photos), so there are no 'hightech' things installed or going on in any way. I would really appreciate your help guys!

Kind regards

I don?t know where you got this notebook but if you want to start to use it for private usage I recommend you to start to use it with clean preinstalled operating system.
Install original recovery image using HDD recovery option or using recovery disc if previous user have created it.

After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS and ?factory settings?. Everything should be OK and you can configure it how do you like it and also be sure that there is no some virus or anything else that can disturb you.

A lot of people have complained about the noise of the fans on these laptops and time and time again they are told to clean them.
In many cases the laptops were new. Mine is new and makes a noise so *PLEASE DO NOT* tell me to clean it.
This is not what's causing the problem.

There is an issue with noisy fans on this laptop and I noticed it was an issue on earlier laptops in this series too.
Those users managed to get Toshiba to take note and eventually release a BIOS update to fix the problem.

Please can someone from Toshiba take this problem seriously too so users of the A500 GM, GL models can also receive a solution to this noisy fan.

If you own this laptop and suffer from this problem then please add your name below.

Answer:Re: Satellite A500-GL- noisy fan

Noisy fan? You mean the cooling module run too fast or what?
The cooling module would run faster and longer if the internal notebook temperature would be too high.
You can control the notebook performance and cooling in Win 7 power management!

Take a look here:

It?s about Vista but the settings are very similar in Win 7

PS: A friend of mine is an A500 owner and the cooling modules work as usual?

BIOS is current.

Any hint is welcome.

I have a Satellite A500. It keeps freezing.

Sometimes it will boot when turned on, but then as soon as I select a program to open, it freezes.
I cannot do anything. I cant control alt delete to open task manager. The only thing I can do is turn off.
Then when I turn it back on, it asks to start in safe mode, I say yes, but the same thing happens.

Sometimes it will start up and you can go into outlook and check a couple of emails, and think it is working fine, then it stops and says not responding. Then I go to explorer and the same thing happens.
I try task manager, but it wont come up.

So I have to turn off again. It is very frustrating.
I have Norton installed and nothing comes up to say there is a virus issue.
I don't have any error messages, it just stops working.

Please help!!!!!

Answer:Satellite Pro A500 keeps freezing

Does the same happen when you start it in safe mode? Test it please. Play a bit with some options or applications.

Since when have you noticed this behaviour?
On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen. It will be interesting to know how your notebook works with ?factory settings? so if possible back-up all your data and install OS again using original recovery installation disc.

I have a toshiba Satellite A500-025 laptop and I got some water splashed on keyboard and some keys are no longer working. I was going to replace the keyboard. Mine was bought in Canada and has a bilingual keyboard english/french.

I was wondering if I can order an english only keyboard as the bilingual ones are more difficult to find.
Also if someone can suggest a site to order from that is reasonably priced.

Answer:Need new keyboard for Satellite A500

Cheapest keyboard you can find on eBay. I have ordered two English keyboards for Satellite P300 and L300.
I paid 15 euro for one keyboard. It is not expensive.

My laptop began to overheat almost every 30 mins in the last couple of days and my fan is acting the exact opposite of it's original purpose. When the temp is around 40-45% the fan works at 60-70%, but when it starts to heat up and reaches 80% the fan slows down to 15-20%.

Is there anyway to manually configure the fan to keep working at 90% or something ? I just cleaned my laptop a while back (2 weeks or something.)

Answer:Fan issue on my Satellite A500-19U

>My laptop began to overheat almost every 30 mins
What happen exactly? is notebook pretty hot or what?

>I just cleaned my laptop a while back (2 weeks or something.)
How have you done this?

For everyday usage I recommend you to use balanced power plan and in advanced options for this power plan set cooling method to ?battery optimized? option. After doing this your notebook should run much quieter.

I have an A500 about 12months old which does not boot up.

The battery charged light is showing white and the on AC power light is on as well.
When the "power on" button is pressed and released the laptop ON light flashes briefly and then the battery light turns orange briefly and the ON light turns off.

The battery has been removed from the case and it has been fully discharged and it still will not power up with or without the battery. It has been plugged into another toshiba power supply with the same results.

The difficulty powering up has been seen two days ago. After about 10 minutes on charge it eventually powered up.

I saw a post where the chap had discharged the internal cmos memory and it eventually came up - would that have anything to do with this?

Any clues from anybody?

Answer:Satellite A500 does not boot up

I think it?s something wrong with the motherboard or motherboard part.
The point is that notebook should power up even if the battery is empty and the ac adaptor is connected? so possibly it?s something wrong with the memory or power supply electronic on the motherboard.

I would recommend checking the memory parts firstly. Remove one module and try to boot up the unit using only one module.

Of course this can not help you too.. so in such case it could be a serious motherboard issue...

I have upgraded my Satellite A500-1f4 running Windows 7 64bit from 4GB to 8GB RAM. Now the BIOS can read the 8GB [2*4GB - bus 1066 MHz] , however windows never started, just hang and screen blank and never changed. When I remove the * GB memory and install original one 4 GB [2*2 GB] it works fine. I even tried to use only 4GB [1 memory chip - 4 GB] but also same issue and read on BIOS but windows never started.

Here is the RAM I used:
4GB PC3-8500 (1066Mhz) 204 pin DDR3 SODIMM (CKS) by Hynix
I bought from amazom :

Can you help me?

I need to upgrade memory to 8 GB, Kindly advise me

Answer:Satellite A500-1F4 - How to upgrade to 8GB RAM?

Hi waelagina,

For me it sounds like that your new modules are faulty or not compatible with the computer. I mean if the old modules work properly, the RAM slots are ok and Windows is installed properly.

You should test other modules. Try Kingston modules or order pretested modules by Toshiba from an authorized service provider.

Sorry but that?s all what I can say at the moment.

My problem is the fan speed thats really high despite the fact both CPU and GPU usage is pretty low. So, at the momment while running just Toshiba's webpages on Google Chrome, MSN, Norton, some Toshiba utilities (just those that are already installed after recovering windows) and Speedfan application, last one shows 82 degrees on GPU which is marked as sort of fire sign, 1st core is 51 degrees also with a fire sign, 2nd core 55 with a fire sign, 3rd is 44 and its ok, 4th is 43 and its also ok.

Now Toshiba's PC Health Monitor shows that the fan speed is 90%, energy usage is like 35% and it says CPU's temp is 65%.Guess I should add that a laptop lays on a desk, not bed or things like that.
The thing is its really annoying working on it, having that ugly sound of the fan all the time.

Any solution?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Re: Satellite A500-1g2 overheating GPU

You should try to clean the cooling system:

If you don't have a compressed air, you can use a vacuum cleaner. (not the best solution but better than nothing :)

Answer:Windows Xp on Satellite A500

Yes, you can install Windows Xp itself on your computer but there are no drivers available for Windows Xp on Toshiba driver page. So, this procedure is useless. You can use Vmware program , it's a virtual machine and there you can install Windows Xp enviroment.
And forget to burn a recovery disk, don't postpone it!

I have a problem at the moment. I'm trying to play a game on my A500-12W.

The game is not that demanding for this kind of laptop, we are talking about witcher from 2007. After about 10 min my latop switches itself off. Looks to me like its overheated but cant really find a reason why. The fan speed is actually stuck at around 80-90% all the time even if there are nearly no programs running. I have a dual core 2,53GHz, 4GB RAM and 1GB radeon mobility 4600hd in it so I dont thing that the game is too demanding.

Can someone help?

Answer:Satellite A500-12W - Switches itself off

The typical recommendation in your case:

1 Clean your computer using the compressed air spray to blow out the dust from the cooling module that can be clogged and causes the system shutdown due to overheating.
2 Choose the ,, Maximum Performance ,, in cooling method in high performance power plan.

And as addition, check what the Gpu driver you' ve installed. It should be a Toshiba pretested driver that a little bit modified with overheating protection.

Dear All

Was anyone lucky enough to get all the drivers for this model to run it on Windows XP? I've just managed to get sound & lan - no luck with chipset, graphic(nvidia drivers from their website are not working) and others.

Please please please help - honestly can't stand Windows 7. Want XP back on my laptop!

Many thanks!

Answer:Satellite A500-19X - Where can I get XP drivers?

Why you want to use this old OS (XP) on new Satellite A500? Windows XP is the past and you should be happy with preinstalled OS from Toshiba. ;)

Normally you can get all drivers on the Toshiba page: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

As you can see this model isn?t XP supported. That means you have to collect the drivers yourself. Look on external websites like Intel, Realtek, etc. or you download the drivers from another model that is equipped with similar hardware.

Good luck!

Hey, i've had my A500 for almost a year now, and i've had to downgrade to windows XP, but I can't find any drivers for it, is there anywhere I can get them from?

Answer:Need WXP drivers for Satellite A500-15N

I have checked Toshiba support page and for this notebook model WXP drivers are not available. This model is not supported for WXP.

Only chance for you is to use drivers from supported models but with same or similar hardware configuration.
It will be hard work to find it out. You will probably not be able to have full configured notebook but I?m pretty sure you will be able to make good hardware configuration with some missing Toshiba specific stuff but I think it is not so important.

For instance:

-GM45 chipset driver > you can use THIS
-display driver ATI M92XT > you can use THIS one
-sound driver is Realtek ALC272

So you must see how to find all them.

Hi users,

I'm trying to update RAM modules to my laptop.
It uses 2x2gb 1033 Mhz modules.
I've bought two new modules of 4gb each, but them do not work, only leds opens...

The new RAM modules are Kingston model KVR13S9S8/4 (1333Mhz)
I've actually updated BIOS to the latest version 2.00-WIN, and still do not work.

Could someone please advise?

I cannot find anywhere if this increase of frequency is in deed the main problem.

Thanks in advanced

Answer:Satellite A500-18Q - RAM update

According notebook specification you can upgrade your notebook with 8GB RAM so you can use 2x4GB RAM module.
Compatible 4GB RAM module have part number PA3677U-1M4G. It must be DDR3 1066MHz.

Use this part number and check exact specification. Compatible Kingston RAM module has part number KTT1066D3/4G.

recently purhased a Toshiba Satellite A500-19w laptop. I found out that the modem port is sealed shut. (with plastic covering) and there is no way to open it.
Do all the A500-19w have this same problem. Plus i did not receive a remote with this laptop. Should that come with the package?

Answer:Few questions about Satellite A500-19W

Satellite A500 is offered with several different hardware configurations and it is not easy to say all of them are the same.
You must also understand that notebooks are ?country specific? product and I know that all platforms will not be offered in every country.
So it can be that all A500 offered in your country will not have modem port.

To be honest in year 2010 modem will not be used so often and my personal opinion is that 90% notebook users will not miss it.

With remote control is the same. if specification for your model doesn?t offer info about it as part of the package then all must be clear for you.

Not sure what info is needed from the event viewer for advise?

Any advise would be appreciated. Cheers

Answer:Satellite A500-17X - BSOD appear every day

It would be interesting to know which BSOD you get exactly. Maybe you can post this information and search a little bit with Google? You can do this yourself ;)

But of course, if it?s a software problem you have to pay for it. Only hardware issues are covered by warranty.

If you use the Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings and the error still occurs, it seems to be a hardware issue.

I have recently puchased a Toshiba Satellite A500-19x and its a great computer but every now and then it powers itself up from cold.

I have tried testing this many times. I will use it for a while and do a "Shut Down" on windows but every now and then it powers itself up. Often I will power it down before I go sleep and when I wake up the computer is on standy by and does not required booting up when I know I performed a SHUT DOWN. I have also tried it using hybernate and various permutations but still no joy.

I tried reading a simular thread

don't this its the same but I will try to find a BIOS update file.

Does anyone know whay this is happening as it is very disheartening after spending so much money on what appeared o be a great laptop

Thanks in advance. Kuldip

I had a similar problem on my notebook that it powers on itself. So I went into BIOS and disabled the following ?features:
-Wake up on LAN
-Wake up on Keyboard
-USB Sleep & Charge

Now this didn?t happen anymore and so I could save a little bit battery power.

Furthermore the FAQ section here shows also an interesting article:

So try also updating the BIOS. You can find it on the Toshiba European driver download page. :)

Can i do this and still keep all the toshiba features?

Answer:Got new Satellite A500/026 but i want Windows XP

If you want to use Win XP then you will need to install the Win XP using the clean MS Windows XP CD.
But the point is that Win XP are not available for A500 because this is a new machine and newer notebooks are preinstalled always with newer Win 7.

You will have to search for Win XP drivers at your own hand and you will not be able to use all the preinstalled tools by Toshiba? such tools are available only in Toshiba image and are not ready for download.

Unfortunately there is no much you can do about it. Cooling fan is controlled automatically. I don?t know which power options have you changed but try please to change option for cooling method. You can find it in advanced power options > Toshiba power saver > Cooling method.
Use option ?Battery optimized?. This should reduce cooling fan activity.

I'm going to buy a Toshiba Satellite A500-14k , and I would like to know:

- has he got a "slot loading DVD drive"?
- is his telecommande really on express card format?

I precise that I'm French, and the French A500 series is maybe different.

I don't speak a good English, excuse me ;)

Have a nice day.

Answer:Questions about the Satellite A500-14k

Is this notebook already on the market in France?
I mean if nobody here can give you precise answer you can contact your local dealer or online shop to pick up info directly.

Google a little bit around. I am pretty sure you can find some dealer that can help you.
You are right about different models and I also believe all A500 will not be the same in all European countries. Please also note that this is first A500 series on the market and I also believe for French market it can be modified in the future. It is possible that in few months you will be able to find more different models in France.

In my country Satellite A500 is still not on the market. :(

I own a Satellite A500 PSAR3A-026002. It has BIOS version 1.50, on the Toshiba website it shows the latest version as 1.90. I'd like to know what has been changed from 1.50 to 1.90 but can't find the information anywhere. Just wondering if anyone could tell me the changes or point me to a website that has them.

Not planning on updating BIOS at this stage as everything is running fine, just curious as to what they updated, fixed or added.

Such information is not published on the Toshiba European driver page.
But you can visit the Toshiba US page.
I found some of the Satellite A500 series and the details about the BIOS versions.
But at this time the BIOS 1.9 is not available on US page? Just the v1.8.

However, if your notebook is running properly I would not recommend changing anything.

I would really need some help. Since nobody from the forums in our country know what exactly is wrong with my laptop this is my final option. Last time my laptop didn't work they charged 75? just to change the keyboard:-o i still have it under warranty but anyway thats just too expensive.

So lets get to the problem. My LCD doesn't work as it should for 2 months now. But recently it got way worse. I have to move my screen to a certain position for it to work correctly. If not, I have horizontal lines all over my screen, or it freezes a bit. But since 2 weeks ago it doesn't start every time (it starts just the screen doesn't work), if the screen is not put in the correct position from the moment i press the power button. It wont recognize it anymore. Sometimes i have to put a little bit of pressure on the screen(sometimes it helps), because if it doesn't recognize it right away it wont recognize it at all later. It works totally fine on my external display.

Could it be the cable connecting the motherboard and the screen? If it is how hard is it to fix it?

I would be extremely happy for every answer and help i could get! i asked everybody and nobody know:(

Answer:Satellite A500-13F - LCD problems

Hi apaljapaz,

Normally if the screen works only when it?s in a certain position it means the cable has a loose connection? So my personal opinion is that the internal LCD cable needs replacing?
It?s strange that the LCD isn?t working anymore but this could be also caused by the cable?

Have you already connected an external monitor?
If it?s working properly the internal graphic card is ok and it?s related to LCD itself or cable.

In your case I would replace the LCD cable and see what happens. It?s a lot of cheaper than LCD ;)

Hmm? sounds like an battery issue?
Try this;
Remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor
Leave the notebook powered off for a longer time.
Then put the battery again into the notebook, connect AC adaptor and check how it works.

You could remove the battery from notebook and could use the notebook without the battery the whole day long?
Next day try the battery again?

If all this workarounds would not help, then you should get in contact with an local ASP in order to check the battery.

Good luck

So i follow the toshiba webpage to recover my computer and upgrate to 64bit Window7. But final i found out the ram still 4GB (2.84GB used)

Answer:4GB ram use on Satellite L500/049

Not sure if it solves your problem but try:

Go Start-Control Panel-System security -Administrative tools- System configuration-Boot - advanced options
make sure that maximum Memory option is not checked. If it's checked, uncheck, press Apply, Ok and restart.

Since few days, my screen is completely black and I can use it only with a secondary display.

The notebook was verified by the local service suppliers and everything is OK (screen, cables, connectors).
I've got a sugestion to flash the Bios but the software downloaded from Toshiba Europe announced me that I have the latest version and the Bios will be not flashed. Any support will be apreciated.

Answer:Black screen on my Satellite A500-138

I?m wondering how an technician can say that your display is OK if the internal display is black?

It definitely not graphic card problem because in such case the external monitor should not work too.

Did you try the combination: Fn + F5?
This switches between external and internal monitor.

Can you see the Toshiba splash screen while booting up the unit?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A500-19X with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. It came with 4GB DDR3 1066 MHZ RAM. Can anyone let me know the the maximum supported RAM for this hardware and OS configuration.

Answer:Satellite A500-19X - What is the maximum supported RAM?

Hi buddy,

You can answer this question yourself!!!

I have checked the specifications for this notebook on the Toshiba website and you can upgrade the RAM to 8GB. Therefore you need DDR3 RAM (1,066 MHz) and two 4GB modules. They should be from the same manufacture to avoid incompatibility issues.

My HD recently crashed. My laptop was still in guarantee, so I send it back, and they replaced the Hard Disk.

When I got it back, I installed Ubuntu, and it's working fine.

But, I need Windows Vista for some programs (Visual C++, some games, ...) that won't run under Wine. Since I've hadn't done a lot of things, I thought to use the recovery media. Normally you should be able to do this from the setup (hold 0 or F8). But that won't work (I get a different screen, without any options).

After some searching, i saw I could order a recovery-dvd. I just wonder if it will work, since my laptop is already running on ubuntu? And will it re?nstall Vista?
It would be stupid to spent more than 30EUR for a recovery dvd that doesn't work. If that's the case, I'll just buy Windows 7, but that seems like a waste of money, since I've had it before my HD crashed (free upgrade).

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite A500-14Q - Question about Recovery- DVD

Why to use Vista on this machine? It must be Win7 supported so before you spend money for old and not so perfect Vista buy Win7 and you will have great machine with newest operating system that runs much better than old Vista.

I tried updating the BIOS to improve performance of the laptop but the update was corrupt and now the laptop will not boot.
Can you help me to recover the bios?

Thank you very much in advance.

In such case you have to get in contact with an local ASP.
The ASP technician would be able refresh the BIOS using crisis BIOS disk.
You cannot do this because such disks and trad-BIOS update is available just for ASP technicians only :(

Try to roll back OS to earlier time using system restore tool just to see if this will help.

If not try to reinstall Toshiba Value Added Package.

i've wanted to update my notebook to the new bios version 1.30. i've startet the windows based update. the update failed in the middle(6 pakets or something left) of the installing process and the system was frozen. after i've rebooted, i wanted to start the bios update for a second time, but the installer said, that i have already installed the bios version 1.30.

How can i update my notebook completely, because my fan is still running on a high level.

best regards

Answer:Satellite A500 - How to update BIOS?

You should be happy that your ROM module isn?t damaged as yet because this happens normally if the update fails.

Anyway, try to load the default settings in BIOS and try the update again. You must be logged in as administrator and close all running programs (also AntiVirus, firewall, etc.) Don?t forget to extract all files from zip archive.

If it doesn?t work you should contact an authorized service provider. The technicians should reflash the whole ROM module and then you can have new BIOS version too. Maybe it will done for free due warranty. :)

Following a viral infection + repair my Toshiba A500 (W 7) I lost KeNotify.exe.

This executable is part of the Toshiba utilities that manage specific functions activated by pressing the FN.
I reinstalled all modules assigns a link with "Flash Cards", "Value Added Package", etc ...
But I can not find KeNotify.exe.

Originally it was installed under C: \ Program Files (x86) \ TOSHIBA \ Utilities \ KeNotify.exe
So it was a 32bit executable ...!? I'm in Seven 64bit Premium and all utilities are reloaded from the library W7-64 Support from Toshiba.

I tried without success in other modules 32 or 64 bits if this executable was there.
Do you know where to find KeNotify.exe?

Thanks in adavnce for the help.

Answer:Satellite A500 - Do you know where to find KeNotify.exe?

As far as I know the KeNotify.exe is a process running in the background and its part of Toshiba Hardware Setup (HW Setup) utility.

I bought a Satellite A500-14L three months ago, I have just update the bios with this link but after that two USB ports ( on the left side of the computer) don't work.

I try to upload new driver for them but with no sucess.
Do someone now how can I fix this issue?

Thanks and sorry for the English language, I'm French...

Answer:Satellite A500-14L can't recognize two USB ports

What OS are you using?
Is it Win 7?

How about USB port status in device manager?
Are there any yellow exclamation marks visible?

In your case I would recommend checking if all necessary drivers were installed.
For example the Chipset Utility should be installed. This is very important.
There is also the USB Sleep and Charge Utility USB Sleep and Charge Utility. This utility is able to either enable or disable the USB Sleep and Charge function. It also shows the positions of USB ports that support the USB Sleep and Charge function and displays the battery's remaining capacity.

Please check these applications!

First of all, excuse me for the awful thread title. I couldn't come up with anything better.

For the past two weeks, my laptop started having problems. Whenever i lock my computer while i have an internet explorer page open, i get the "not responding" message for it after i open the lock. Why is that?

I also have a more frustrating problem. Whenever i type online, to Facebook or to a forum (like this one) keyboard seems to fail at times and skip a letter once in a while. So i can't type fast because some letter always don't show up on the screen although i am certain i pressed the key.

And the computer seems to be running slower these days. Before, when i clicked on a folder or a Word document it immediately opened. But now, it takes couple seconds.

Are there problems caused by the laptop? Or my first two problems are caused by Internet Explorer?

Answer:Re: Some running issues on my Satellite A500

To be honest I don?t understand this issue with internet explorer. Have you noticed the same with other browsers?

Typing issue ? try to disable touchpad using FN+F9 key combination. Maybe you touch touchpad accidentally while typing. Check it out.

Slow notebook ? Satellite A500 is not the newest notebook model and I can imagine you use it for a while. I presume your operating system must be optimized and ?cleaned-up?.
For such purposes you can use different applications.

If you need some assistance with this let us know.

I got a Toshiba Satellite A500-14l with a radeon mobility HD4650.

I replace Vista by Windows 7 in september 2009 (thank's to msdnaa), installed the latest driver I found. Few month pass, I decided to update my graphic driver. As you can see, there is no updated driver for Windows 764bit for my laptop model psam3e. give me ati driver 8.563.1.5 or 8.634.1

I wanted to try catalyst 10.7 (8.753) to use ati acceleration with vlc 1.1.1, so I cheat, I pretend my laptop was a L670-psk3ee to get a 8.712.2.1 version of catalyst.
That works great, and this is the only way i found to get an "almost" up-to-date driver. Then I installed the Hydravision from website (because it's not included in toshiba driver).
Now, the CCC entry in the right click is missing, and the hydravision tab is missing in CCC too. I never see this problem before, so if anyone have a idea...

Thank's in advance.

* Using Windows 7 64bit, up-to-date, except ati driver due to toshiba policy.
* ccc mean Catalyst control center. the shortcut in "all programs" runs fine.
* Hydravision is a usefull tools to manage multi desk and display. As there is no entry in the CCC i can't configure it, but the multi-desk exe works fine too.

Everything runs fine on my computer (not the laptop), so I think the problem came from Toshiba driver (as AMD can't provide the generic one due to s... Read more

Answer:Satellite A500-14I - ATI CCC entry is missing

You can?t use the drivers from AMD directly because they are only designed for desktop cards. There is no mobile driver that works with notebook graphic cards. So I think that?s the reason why CCC entry is missing.
Please remove this driver and install official version from Toshiba website.

But one point would be interesting to know:
Why you try updating the display driver? If everything runs properly, no update is necessary! :)

I have been trying to upgrade BIOS on my Satellite A500-1GL (PSAR9E) for a while now but I have a dead battery so cannot get past the security check at the beginning. Is there anyway way around this, as I am connected with AC power so I don't see what the problem is!! Could I have the self extracting zip files possibly.

Any help would be much appreciated as this is very frustrating!

Answer:Satellite A500-1GL - cannot upgrade BIOS

I think you will not be able to update the BIOS if your battery is dead.
The Win based BIOS update can be updated only from running Windows system and there is a security option which allow you to update the BIOS only if the notebook is connected to AC adaptor and if the battery is charged.

You could update the BIOS using an traditional BIOS version but as far as I know only an Toshiba service partner could do that.

So you?ve got two options:
Purchase a battery in order to update the BIOS using win based BIOS version or you will get in contact with an ASP in your country and will ask for BIOS update using traditional BIOS version.

But is BIOS update necessary for you?

I've got a notebook with old BIOS version and i did not update it even if new version was released.

I have a Satellite A500 and I cannot seem to get the computer to recognize the keystrokes when I am typing in my password to get into the computer. Therefore I cannot get into the computer at all. The cursor is blinking in the password box and when I click with the mouse it recognizes that function too but I can't go any further.
This has occurred a number of times now and it has been really inconvenient

Does anyone have a solution for this please? Is this to do with tapping? FN + F9 don?t work.

Answer:Re: Satellite A500 - Keyboard isn't recognized

Hi Aussie,

Do you mean the password of your Windows user account? Normally if you start the computer you can start with password enter because the cursor blinks already in password box.

Can you enter the password if you connect an external keyboard? If yes it would mean the internal keyboard is malfunctioning. Furthermore it would be interesting to know if you can access the BIOS by pressing F2 key on internal keyboard. So you can check if the problem is software related or not.

By the way: FN+F9 can only disable/enable the touchpad but not the keyboard.

As I'm willing to upgrade memory of my notebook, at the moment my notebook has 2x 2GB DDR3 PC3-8500 @ 1066Mhz (at least this is what specification says). I plan to remove them and put inside 2x 4GB, but PC3-10600 @ 1333 Mhz. *Is my plan doable or the 1333Mhz memories won't be compatible with my laptops motherboard?* Problem is, getting 1066Mhz is quite unreal where I live, as they are a quite rare product and most shops offer only 1333Mhz and higher.

Thanks in advance for any answers/suggestions.

Answer:Satellite A500-1H1 - Memory upgrade

According notebook specification your notebook model can be upgraded up to 8 GB.
If you want to have 8GB RAM you can upgrade it with 2 x 4GB. Compatible 4GB RAM for your machine has part number PA3677U-1M4G.

Try to find online store where you can order RAMs with this part number.

I'm having problems with my Toshiba A500 1G2, it freezes randomly. When the freez accures the only way to use the computer is to turn it off and then on. Freezez occures while playing online games (World of Warcraft), and wathing youtube, so I think it could be network card related.

What I've already tried:
1. Updating drivers
2. Doing a fresh install of Windows
3. Cleaning the fans
3. Graphics card stress tests (10 hours)

Problem still exists. Computer can work 7 days without any freez, or can freez 3 times in 1 hour there is no rule.
I'm afraid that if I send my laptop do the service, they will send it back to me with information everything is ok (becouse the randomness of this issue).
It is very anoying for me, plese help.

Answer:Re: Satellite A500 1G2 - hangs/freezes

>I'm afraid that if I send my laptop do the service, they will send it back to me with information everything is ok (becouse the randomness of this issue).

I?m afraid this can/will happen if you would send it to the service. In most cases it?s important to reconstruct the issue to solve this and if you cannot reconstruct the issue then it would be very hard to understand what?s wrong.

But you said that this happen ONLY playing games and watching movie streams?
Does it happen playing usual games; not online?
I think you should try to update the graphic card driver.
Try the compatible driver for NVIDIA GeForce 310M from nVIdia page too.
Of course the Toshiba driver should be tested as well.

BIOS update might be helpful too? update it if you have a old BIOS.

Good luck

Hi guys,

Firstly my apologies if I'm not in the right subforum here.

For approximately two weeks now my laptop (Satellite A500) is e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y s-l-o-w. Very often (not always) I get an error message after start up (which takes about 15 minutes) about a 'JIT debugger' and to click ok if want to abort the application or cancel if I want to debug it.

What does all that mean??? Where does it come from?

More information:
-) I have not installed any new programs or anything for at least 6 months now.
-) Recently it takes about 15 minutes for the laptop to start up and another 15 minutes to be able to log on to the net (through a wireless usb modem)
-) I have a run a virus check (just in case ;)) and nothing was found.
-) I have done a 'soft format' that I found pre-installed on the computer. This type of format apparently gets rid of all your errors without the need to reinstall all your programs. This 'soft format' has not improved the performance at all.
-) I have brought up the Task Manager to see which application causes that JIT-debugger issue but the Task Manager box is empty. Nothing that's running in there.

Could anyone plllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaas sssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeee let me know what could be going on and how I could maybe fix this? Your knowledge and help would be greatly appreciated!!!

All the best everyone!

Hello guys.

I decided to upgrade HDD in my 1-year old Toshiba A500-138 (PSAM3E). Now I've got 400 GB HDD, and would like to have 1 TB - Toshiba MK1059GSM to be precise. The only thing that keeps me from ordering it right now is that this HDD is 12,5 mm high, while my old 400GB is 9,5 mm (which you can consider as standard).

Do you think it would fit into A500 chasis? Maybe someone has done similar upgrade in the past?

One more thing - will Toshiba A500 even recognize the HDD? I think that 1-year old notebook shouldn't have any problem with it, but I could be wrong.

Any help and suggestions would be highly appreciated:)

Answer:Satellite A500-138 (PSAM3E) - HDD upgrade

I had the same situation on my old Satellite A300 and I can say that you can use both HDD. It doesn?t matter which high the HDD has. You can use both of them.

I presume you are the first one here on this forum with such upgrade and it will be nice to hear your personal experience but I think new HDD should be recognized properly on this newer notebook model.
