Problem with side USB ports and Bluetooth on Satellite A100-237

Question: Problem with side USB ports and Bluetooth on Satellite A100-237

Hello, I own a Sattelite A100-237 notebook and I have an annoying problem for quite a while now. The two USB ports in the side as well as the Bluetooth device do not work. As far as the bluetooth device is concerned it is just not recognised by the system, as if it wasn't there (that's what the driver installation says too) while any device I connect to the side USB ports doesn't work either.
The other two USB ports in the back work just fine.

Preferred Solution: Problem with side USB ports and Bluetooth on Satellite A100-237

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Problem with side USB ports and Bluetooth on Satellite A100-237

Maybe are this two ports really defective and there is no much to say. Either you will get your notebook to repair or you must live with this and use other two USB. Sorry but I see your posting just as a short report and not as some ask for help.

Bye and good luck!

Spanking new A100-PSAANE (on Vista Premium Home Edition) problems:

1) LCD display -
Suddenly the display starts moving sideways as if you are in a merry-go-round and everything is running sideways! When I close the lid and open it again all is well and the display is exactly the same as it was before the problem started!

2) Hitting the scroll bar causes restore -
Quite often hitting the scroll bar causes that window to restore and clicking the same again causes the window to return to maximize.

Anyone knows the solution to these please???

Answer:Satellite A100 PSAANE: display moves from side to side

Your issues sound very strange and therefore it would be very interesting to know some more details;

Regarding point 1.) Do you mean the whole display or the single windows??
Did you try to change the screen resolution??? What graphic driver do you use???

Regarding point 2.) What scrollbars do you mean exactly??? Did you mean the ?internet explorer? window scrollbars or the "Windows Explorer" scrollbars???

Finally it would be very interesting to know if these issues happen on fresh recovered Vista OS. I would like to know if the same happens on notebook with factory settings!!

Good morning every body

I have formatted the harddrive of my Toshiba Satellite A100-712 notebook and dowloaded the sound and BT drivers from this amazing site.

But still there is a problem.
In the device manager there are yellow signs with the bt and realtek drivers. I don't know what to do?

Please, can you list the steps for proper installation for these drivers?
bcz i'll be crazy ... :(
thank you

Answer:Problem in installing Sound and Bluetooth drivers in a Satellite A100-712

First question: Why you don?t use the Toshiba recovery CD?
This CD contains all drivers, tools and utilities and you will not need to install all the drivers separately?

Secondly: On the Toshiba driver page you should find the ?installation instruction document??
Simply follow the installation order mentioned in the txt file and everything should works!!!

PS: Be sure that you use the right drivers?. I think the A100-712 is apart from the PSAA9E series?

I have the following problems with the above machine:

1) I've attached an external serial COM port to the machine. However, I can't connect to this COM Port using Hyperterminal.
2) I've installed a Bluetooth USB Adapter but I can't view the configuration for the protocol.

Each of the above work perfectly with another laptop which has no Bluetooth or even a network card.

Has anyone experienced any similar problems. I'm using WinXP SP2.

Answer:Satellite Pro L10 Problem with COM Ports/Hyperterminal & Bluetooth

1, In which way is the external COM port connected? Is it detected in a right way in the device manager? What is the error msg of Hyperterminal?
When it's connected via PCMCIA, try to change the PCMCIA slot settings in BIOS!

2, Try to reinstall the Toshiba Bluetooth stack! There can be some problems. The MS Bluetooth stack does not work properly with Toshiba devices and one of the earlier Toshiba Bluetooth stacks was not signed by WinXP Service Pack 2!

my screen display has turned up side down on my A100 Toshiba lap top
How can I fix back to normal? brijoy1i

Answer:Re: Satellite A100 - display has turned up side down

There is a hotkey to change the orientation of the screen, but it depends on what Graphics Chip you have.

I did a quick search on google and found some hotkeys:

Intel Graphics: CTRL+ALT+Down and CTRL+ALT+Up
ATI Graphics: CTRL+SHIFT+8/9/0
nVidia: CTRL+Shift+R
nVidia (New): CTRL+Shift+ [arrow keys]

If nothing works, then you can change the orientation in the Graphics Card's own Control Panel (Advanced settings).

I think its a monitor problem as when I take a screenshot they don't appear, but I could be wrong. They've been there for a while, at first I didn't really think much of it, but they kinda annoy me. Each line is a pixel wide and runs the full length down my screen. They are various colours with one or two gaps, the gaps being slightly wider than the lines themselves, in-between. Any help appreciated.

Answer:Satellite A100-197 has coloured lines down right hand side

Hi there,

you proved it right, it?s definitively a monitrot problem. If you cannot make a screenshot of it then it?s surely something with the electronic of the lcd.

If I were you I would contact an authorized service center (and if you are still in warranty you should take some benefit from it). If you need some link to contact an ASP then just click [HERE| 000000871] and ask them for a hardwarecheckup or a repair of your machine.

I've a problem with the 2 USB ports on the right side of my laptop Satellitte L670D-10E with Windows 7. This morning there was no problem, I utilised my optical mouse without a problem, but when I restart my computer this afternoon the ports doesn't work anymore.

I tried to desactivated and reactivited the ports but it doesn't help. In the control pannel of the hardware everything is set as "good working".

Can somebody help me?

Answer:Satellite L670D-10E - USB ports on the right side don't work

> I tried to desactivated and reactivited the ports but it doesn't help.
How you have done this?

Probably it?s something wrong with chipset driver that controls the USB ports? In your case I would reinstall the chipset driver from official Toshiba website.

Have you installed additional software or driver for your mouse? If yes I would recommend removing this software.

Hi all,

I bought a Satellite P850-12Z laptop with *4* USB 3.0 ports. Two ports on left side and two ports on right side with sleep and charge functions.

If I connect a Verbatim USB 3.0 external drive to ports on left side, everything is working properly. Transfer rate is about 70-90MB/s, but if I connect the *same drive* to USB ports on right side I see the pop-up message "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 port" and transfer rate is about 20-30 MB/s. These ports are working like USB 2.0 ports.

I repeat that all ports available on the laptop are USB 3.0.

Does anybody know what is happening with USB 3.0 ports on right side?

I don't have another USB 3.0 drive to do more tests.

Answer:Satellite P850-12Z USB 3.0 Ports on right side don't work at USB 3.0 speed

> I repeat that all ports available on the laptop are USB 3.0.
You are absolutely right.
I?ve checked notebook?s specification and all ports are USB 3.0 ports.

It is not easy to say what is wrong there.
What you can do is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for explanation.
They should know what is wrong there.

Maybe some driver update or BIOS update offered in the future will ?fix? this issue. In my opinion you should continue to use ports on left side for data transfer.

I have a Satellite P50t - A0338 laptop.
It has a full keyboard and numpad. The numpad side of the laptop is faulty. And yes i have tried turning it on and off by pressing the num lock button. I have also restarted numerous times. Checked the BIOS un-installed all keyboards and restarted to have the drivers, then, reinstall. The problem persists.
I am now typing using the keyboard. I want to now demonstrate what happens when I use the numpad side.
I am going to type the following using the numpad: 1234567890.-+/* in that exact sequence.

Here goes:

Damn I switched tabs three times, it asked me whether I wanted to shutdown and it took me the log off screen & more.
The num pad used to work. It hasnt been working for some time now. I can not remember the exact day it stopped working.
I don't download crap. Only use this laptop for work and listening to music. So it has MS Office and Itunes installed, it came with AVG antivirus.

I therefore think it is a driver issue. However the drivers are for a standard keyboard, there aren't any strange drivers installed under the keyboards. I have accessed the BIOS to check whether there are any settings which I can change, and I couldn't see any.

Oh there is one more thing, both USB ports on the left have stopped working.
The keyboard lights can be turned on and off by using fN+z...
Please help.

Hi all.

I have brand new Notebook A100 and I just replaced win vista by XP.

Nearly all of devices installed inside are operational using appropriate driver (downloaded from this site).

But I can't find driver for Bluetooth. When devicemanager launched, there is unknown device listed, labelled as acpi/tos6205/2&daba3ff&0.

Please, could you tell me if it really is BT and if so, how could I make it operational?

Thank you very much

When I insert a flash drive into one of the dead ports, initially the message pops up indicating that the computer recognizes something has been inserted into the port, but then it immediately disappears and the port is dead. I went to Device Manger-->Portable Devices and tried to fix one of the three dead ports. At some point (after I scanned for hardware changes, I think) it did show the drive letter, but it had a yellow triangular error-message  indicator. I right-clicked and selected Properties, and it said "This device cannot start (code 10)." Then the drive letter disappeared, though it has come back sporadically. I hope this is clear. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks. Jane Doe

Okay this is a really interesting situation. After a week of trial and error I've narrowed the problem down enough to have a workaround for it and to ask about it. I'm running XP SP3, the keyboard in question is a dell multimedia bluetooth keyboard and the usb ports are on board, not a hub.

When I boot up my machine (or come back to it in the morning even if its left on) the keyboard won't work. The -only- way, and I've tried tons of stuff, that I've been able to get it to type again is to disable the bluetooth dongle in the settings, move it into a new USB port (tho I may have only ever swapped it with the mouse USB port), re-enable the device, remove and re-detect/add the keyboard. This is the absolute only way I've been able to get it to work again including reboots, driver reinstalls, batteries, re-pairings, etc. It also does not depend what USB port the dongle was in last, this always happens. I've also checked to make sure that the Bluetooth service is started automatically at boot and it is.

I really have no idea why this would happen and while I'm happy to have figured out a workaround, I would be even happier if I was able to skip this 5 minute process every time I want to use the keyboard. I'd also like to note that the machine stays on overnight (not hibernating or anything) and that the keyboard doesn't seem to 'shutdown' if I leave it alone for 10 minutes or so. I figured that it could be related to ho... Read more

I have a problem with a question mark that appears next to the SM Bus in the Control Panel and I can't get rid of it. What is more, I have found out that due to this problem I cannot connect my mobile phone (Nokia) via USB cable (mouse works ok, though).

Now, I tried to find some sort of chipset drivers on the Toshiba EU download site, but there just aren't any! What is more - there's no such group (am I missing something??). I've tried to update the driver via Windows Update - of course, it won't bugde.

Could someone give me hint regarding this? I am a total loss, and I need my phone connected quite urgently.

Answer:Satellite A100-529 SM Bus problem

Hello Pakna

It is really strange that you have those problems with almost latest and newest notebook. What did you done with it? As far as I know the unit is preinstalled with recovery image and after first start the hardware configuration is perfect.

It is really not necessary to install any additional driver. I recommend you to use delivered recovery media and reinstall the OS. On this way you will have factory settings again and no more entries in device manager.

If you don?t want to do this please visit Toshiba download site and there you will find everything you need.

Please help guys!

I installed Win 7 32bit on my Satellite A100-912 laptop. Everything is working perfectly aside from having problem reading external usb HDDs ( drive appears on disk management but can't be accessed). These drives are not defective as I use them on other Pcs. Thumb drives are not an issue at all. Tried to use self-powered USB hub but no success. Not sure if this is a Bios related issue or a hardware limitation of this unit. Thanks!

> Everything is working perfectly aside from having problem reading external usb HDDs ( drive appears on disk management but can't be accessed).

The HDD appears in disk management but do you see the additional HDD in ?My Computer??

I?m not sure what could cause this and it?s strange that you cannot access the USB HDD even if it has been recognized properly?
Maybe you should try to update the chipset driver.
The chipset driver controls the USB interface/ports? so it?s definitely worth a try

Hi mate,

since when does this problem occur? Do you have still warranty on your machine? If yes, then send it immediately to an [Authorized Service Partner| 000000871] for a hardware checkup/repair, but if NOT find some repair shop or some notebook technician and ask him to check your machine on some hardware failures.

I suppose that something with your cooling system is not working properly, so it might be the cooling paste on the CPU which has dried out or maybe the fan which could be clogged with dust...

Last summer we purchased twenty Satellite Pro A100 laptops for use in our school. In the last six months, we have had several issues with keys detaching from the keyboard. This is a great disappointment as it was at my suggestion that we purchase Toshiba laptops. Is there any way we can get this situation remedied? I think the easiest approach would be to transfer all the ?missing? keys onto one laptop and then return it, however if this is going to be an ongoing problem with losing keys then I would prefer that another solution be found.

I would appreciate a reply as soon as possible, as we are currently without the use of these machines.

Answer:Satellite Pro A100: Key detachment problem

Hello Simon

I read this forum for a long time because I use Toshiba notebooks for years. To be honest your story is really amazing. For me key detaching cannot be done without using a power and pull them upwards. Every single key is secured with small plastic hooks. I use keyboard on my Satellite M70 (older than your A100) every day and pretty intensively but keyboard is still in good order.

Please do not be mad on me but usage in school is also .... how to say ... in question. Are you sure that the pupils in your school use notebooks properly? In my opinion you should contact nearest authorized service partner and try to clarify the situation.

Hi to all!

Once again the same problem with BIOS updating...

Quotting from there

"I decided to update the BIOS on my Toshiba Satellite A100-712 PSAA9E laptop to the latest version available (6.00).

The installation finished normally(went through all the steps, wrote all 21 blocks) without any errors but after rebooting I noticed that it now hangs at the Toshiba logo screen.

The blue progress bar moves twice but then gets stuck about 1/3 of the way through.
In order to see how bad the damage was, I pressed esc at the beginning of POST and saw that it gives me the right BIOS Version (6.00).

It also tells me that "No TPM or TPM has problem", and "2039M System RAM Passed."
It then displays the message "Press <F2> to enter SETUP" (which makes the message disappear, but otherwise does nothing.

If i press F2 during the Toshiba logo screen, it replaces the message at the bottom with "Please wait" and nothing happens"

Sollution "go to ASP" in not sollution.

Is there someone who can explain how to use Phoenix Crisis Disk (PCD)?
I've made diskette from PCD, replaced BIOS.WPH with my BIOS version.

After pressing WIN + F and power on diskette starts to work and beeps are from my note. After 1 minute - everything freez... Same with bios.bak - old version of my BIOS made after starting Winphlash.exe...

I posted this already in the other posting regarding an similar BIOS issue.

For me it looks like something went wrong during the BIOS update procedure and if you are lucky man, the BIOS ROM reflashing could help you.

As far as I know you would need a special rescue BIOS version and disk to reflash the ROM module which you don?t have and therefore you have to contact the ASP in you country for a help.

This is not a real solution which you would expect but it?s an advice how to get a solution?
Therefore I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country for notebook check

Good luck buddy

I copied a recording of a film from my PVR to my Satellite A100, converted it from .rec to .mpg and edited it (chopped off the adverts at the beginning and end). Up to this point, everything went well - I could play back the edited film on my laptop. The problems began when I tried to burn it to DVD.

The first time I tried this, using Windows Movie Maker followed by Windows DVD Maker, it took about two-and-a-half hours (for a 1 hour 45 minute recording) and then I found the end of the film was missing!

My second attempt (same recording) was using Ulead DVD MovieFactory for Toshiba. This was much quicker, taking about 45 minutes but, having tried to play the DVD, I found that from about 50 minutes into the film the sound stopped - the soundtrack at this point changed to that at the end credits (but not the picture) and then went silent.

I tried each software application again with different media (first, Philips DVD+R; second, Verbatim DVD+R), and found exactly the same problems each time.

Could anyone suggest what I am doing wrong before I waste any more time or DVDs on this?!

Answer:DVD burning problem on Satellite A100

Well, I have now tried a number of times, using different settings. Whenever I try to burn this film using the Ulead software, the same sound problem occurs and always at the same point in the recording (48 minutes). This is very strange, especially as there is no indication of any problem at this point on the recording before burning.

Also, I noticed the mpeg compression was set at "quality = 90 percent". Is this why the process took only 45 minutes? Thinking that setting 100 percent meant no compression, I tried this and found that the process was even quicker at 30 minutes. Have I got this the wrong way around?

I would be very grateful for anyone's thoughts on this, as no-one seems to have replied yet.

Hi I just recently bought a brand new satellite pro a100 with XP pre-installed- one of my main reasons for choosing this as well as the price was the built-in s-video connector so I could get my screen up on to my tv. However I havent yet got this working and would appreciate any assistance.

It is connected to my TV via a s-video cable connected to a working s-video/scart adapter. Nothing is displaying on the screen and, in the ATI displays setting, panel is the only option available to me. The other 2 including TV are greyed out.

Maybe something else needs to be configured but I havent found any information of any use yet.

I will try to describe my issue in details because i hope so it might help!

I have a 5 years old satellite A100-011, Nvidia 7600 Go. Recently i fixed a display issue which i used to, however, this time (two weeks ago) the laptop came back from the workshop with this heating problem. Which is the first time! The problem is the fan.

When i start the PC the fan works as it used ti be for years, at maximum for 3-4 seconds. After that the fan barely works! I feel the air coming out but very very low! lower than how it used to be for years! I came back the same place i fixed the PC. They checked it and claim its fine and working! So, i give it a shot and tried the PC.

Obliviously, there is problem. Because the temp of the GPU which has the problem, in idle reach around 60c (SpeedFan) and goes higher (65-67) while surfing the net! And that way too much for internet using!

What makes it even worse the fan still at this very slow speed!! The speed may increase little bit when it reach 67c!

This way i cant use any high performance program because the PC gets over heated then shutdown.

Note: I have tried the following:
1-BIOS (latest version) no fan control available
2-Power settings does nothing and there is no cooling method options
3-Software for fan control. Unfortunately nothing worked

I really dont know what the problem is! Since the fan is working but not all the time and why the GPU is getting that hot without doing anything really serious! Is it a ... Read more

Hello i was wondering is the monitor out on the side of my laptop the same as a DVI output? I am looking to connect my laptop to my hd tv, what is the best way? Can i use some sort of HDMI cable? Like a DVI to HDMI cable? Or is there a special cable for this?

Answer:Equium A100-306 Is the monitor out on the side the same as a DVI out?

On the left side you will find two ports;
- RGB (monitor port)
This can be used to connect an external monitor to the notebook

- s-video out port
This port can be used to connect the notebook to the TV via s-video cable.
There are different s-video cables.

Check this:

But you will never ever be able to connect to HDTV to get a HD resolution!!!

I just bought a Satellite A100-692 with an intel T2050 Core Duo processor and an ATI Radeon X1400 graphics card. I am quite surprised how often the left side fan is working. Sometimes it even works when the system is idle or I am just surfing the web.

I would be really thankful for your answers.

Answer:A100-692 left side fan works very often

Hello Christian

I know that this is very annoying but it is not a problem as you described. If you see other notebooks from other producers there is the same situation. Newest notebooks are really powerful if compare them to previous models.

Increasing performance has one disadvantage ? produce more warmness. If you check this forum carefully you will find a lot of discussion about similar theme.

Even if I do this, the machine "hangs" and won't close down. I have tried starting up in Safe Mode and then closing - which it does correctly, but then when I start up normally and try to shutdown, it reverts to "hanging" again. The OS and all other programmes are fully up-to-date.

Can anyone suggest a solution, as from other online fora, I see others have the same problem, without a solution yet.

In anticipation of your help, thanks!

PS - I can't find any reference to TSrsTRAYWND anywhere.

Answer:Satellite Pro A100 (PSAAC) with WIN XP - shutdown problem

I have searched on my notebook for a TSrsTRAYWND.exe file but I couldn?t find anything. If you search for this file on the HDD do you get a result?

I think this has something to do with the drivers/software which will be loaded on Windows start up. You should try to disable all programs in msconfig => start up that you don?t need. Then try it again.

Sorry but that?s all what I can say at the moment.

Hello all,

I am having an issue with an audio driver. I can't seem to find one that works anywhere, I have looked at multiple forums and the Toshiba website for suitable drivers with no success. I've basically hit a wall, so hopefully someone can provide a working solution. :)

Audio device:
Device: 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
Manufacturer: Intel

(Details retrieved using a Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD)

Although a windows system labels it as "Realtek High Definition Audio Controller"? (I'm no expert with drivers, so maybe thats a stupid question...) :)

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite A100-920 (PSAA9E) running Windows XP Professional.

I have spent hours trying to solve this so I'm hoping this is the last mile. :) Thanks to anyone with any suggestions.

Best regards,

I have a Toshiba A100 with Windows XP (German) and I would like to clean install a Windows XP (English). During CD boot setup normally inspects the hardware configuration but after that it hangs. I left it for 15-20 min but there was no response and then I had to quit the installation.

The windows xp installation guide says that it has something to do with hardware compatibility. (I tried pressing F5,F6,F7 to skip this step but did not help)
The same installation CD I tried on my friend's notebook (of another brand) and it worked! I wonder what is so specific about the Toshiba notebook hardware compatibility with windows xp.

However my recovery CD (german OS) works fine!

Can someone help me on this issue?

Answer:Problem during Windows XP installation on Satellite A100

Normally you will need to integrate SATA drivers into the installation disc, so that the Windows XP setup routine can find the HDDs. Well, in your case XP does not tell this explicitly, but you could try to do this, just in case.

Use forum search on nlite and you will find enough threads covering this topic.
Another thing could be, that you will have to integrate SP2, if this is a pre-SP2 installation disc. This can be done also be using the nlite tool.

I've bought "line6 toneport ux2" and it doesn't work proper with my laptop (dual core 1,73GHz, 1GB ram, Windows Vista).

The problem is when I'm listening music through this device it sounds like I'd listening scratched CD, from time to time there is a short interruption. The same thing is happening when I'm using Gearbox (software which let you play electric guitar using audio device). I checked everything, including change OS for Windows XP.

I've got the newest drivers for tone port (vista ready), I downloaded Gerbox 3.5, only toneport is connected to my computer, I turned off every flashing facilities in vista, power plan is set for high performance. I've turn off the sound card. I've checked my laptop with line6 monkey and it says that everything is ok. I checked the audio device on my friend's desktop and it works ok.

I desperately need help.

Answer:Satellite A100 and USB audio device problem

Hello Marcin

In my opinion you must be sure that your notebook run well and according to your posting I do not see there any problem.

So in your case you have problem using some additional hardware or third part software. Am I right? If there is some problem I do not see any reason to search solution with Toshiba. You should contact manufacturers from all devices and software you use. They should have enough experience with own products and they should offer good support in troubleshooting.

My notebook (I bought it 1.5 years ago) has a big problem when operating with battery.
First of all, with a fully charged battery, the notification for "limited battery status" pops up after 2 minutes of operation and after 5 minutes it goes to stand-by mode due to very low battery level.

Then, I plug it on the AC power and the LED for the battery remains yellow for about 15 minutes and then turns blue.
(The battery is OK, I have tested it on another Sat A100)

What can be the problem???

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite A100 - problem with battery operation

Since You Have tested the battery in another Sat A100 the problem must be in your computer settings:

2>> You will now see a screen wich displays your power plans and note *one of them* has a tick i.e a small dot in a circle:

7>> YOU SHOULD HAVE : You will have to have play with these settings or you could click restore plan defaults to see if this will solve your problem

Note clicking the *+ SIGN next to tany of these options below will allow you to change what event takes place on your computer.

I am trying to install Windows XP Prof. on my new notebook A100-773 (WinXP Media Center Edition preinstalled). After I put in the installation disc, restarted the computer and then selected CD-ROM from the boot menu it said something like "checking hardware configuration". Following that the screen got black and nothing more happened.

Furthermore I tried to start Linux (Knoppix) from CD. Same problem, at a certain stage the system stops and does not do anything more.

Does anyone have an idea how this problem could be solved?

Thank very much for your answers in advance.

Answer:Satellite A100-773: Problem with installation of WinXP Pro

Maybe you should try to start the unit in safe mode and made a new install from the display driver.

I upgraded RAM and HDD on a Satellite A100-803 and when I restore Windows Vista from the recovery disk the process goes fine, but after the reboot windows says that "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer?s hardware".

I think that the problem is the one listed here. .

But the problem is that in the BIOS I can't change the RAID setting and during recovery install I'm not able to add the required additional drivers.
The new HDD is a WD 500GB driver (WD5000BPVT)

How can I solve this problem?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A100-803 - Vista recovery problem

First of all I don?t think its BIOS problem.
The notebook does not support RAID.

I think the problem is your new HDD size. You upgraded the HDD with 500GB and its bigger than the original HDD equipped in A100.

The point is that a recovery disk creates automatically the partitions on the HDD but due to different HDD size the partitions size would be different too.
I think you will not have the same problems installing Vista or Win 7 using the Microsoft disk

Answer:Satellite A100 01G BSOD overheat problem?

BSOD's can be caused by almost anything.

Test the RAM for errors. You can use the free Memtest utility:

1) Go to and download the "Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)"
2) Open the ZIP file and extract the ISO file to a temporary folder.
3) Burn the ISO to a blank CD using an "Image-to-Disc" or "Bootable CD" project in your CD/DVD burning software (dont use a normal Data Project).
4) Insert the Memtest CD into your laptop and turn it on, press F12 to launch the boot menu, and select "CD".

Test the Hard Disk for errors by using DFT.
DFT Download:

Download the ISO File and burn it to a CD-R Disc (There is also a Floppy Disk version if that's easier).
If you dont know how to burn an ISO file, read this guide:
Restart your laptop and boot from the DFT Disc.
Choose the "Advanced" Test and let it run (it may take an hour or so).
If you see a red message box, the HDD is faulty.
An error code 0x70 means there are bad sectors and the HDD needs replacing.

If they pass the tests, then Windows may be corrupted. This can be caused by viruses, power losses, file system corruption, faulty RAM, etc..
You would need to backup your important files and documents, then run Recovery from your Recovery Discs.

I have a Toshiba A100 Satellite psaa9a-118038 notebook. When I put a CD or DVD into the drive the disk spins up and in many cases it causes the computer to freeze. The only way to get out of this 'locked problem' is to hold the off/on power button to close the computer then restart again. I have taken the notebook into Toshiba for repair 3 times, the CD has been replaced. A problem CD that was copied on their computers then the copy run on mine does boot up and runs without problems. The tech at toshiba suggested my problems could be related to having installed the software for my Lexmark printers, and this has caused my problems. He suggested that the CD rom had picked up some code the then prevented other cds beinag able to load.Has anybody come across this problem before and can you help with a solution. Because this problem has been going on for a number of months I feel like dropping my Toshiba from a high building and never buying another Toshiba, but I may damage the pavement!

Hi folks,

My Satellite A100-225 won't hold charge when running. If I am using processor heavy apps, the battery will drain in about half an hour, and will only charge when the lid is closed (standby mode ) or the laptop is turned off.

When the battery does run out and the laptop turns off, I have to remove the battery, press the on/off switch, replace the battery, then let it charge for a while before I can use it again.

The laptop will not power up at all if I remove the battery and run off ac power.

I have tried a replacement battery, but exactly the same happens.
I have also updated the Bios to the latest version ( 6 ) .
Laptop is running Windows XP Home.
Laptop is out of warranty.

Anybody have any ideas?

Answer:Satellite A100-225 - Battery Charge problem

Seems like a hardware related problem. I mean, if your battery drains when the machine is connected to the wall trough the AC-adapter (thats what I did understand) then something in the power subsystem of your notebook fails.

Did you already sent the machine to an authorized service partner or is the machine still in warranty?

We have recently bought an A210-1B1 laptop that has Windows Home Vista installed.

As the laptop has provision to add another hard-drive, can we load an XP drive, so that the required system can be opened, depending on the requirement, at the time.

We are trying to use a 'DJ' programme, that isn't compatible with Vista.

Answer:Can Vista and XP be used side by side on a Satellite A210?

First of all I?m not 100% sure if your notebook supports 2 HDDs.
I?ve got a A210 Satellite and it has 2 HDD bays but it cannot be upgraded with a second HDD because the second SATA controller is not available. I?ve removed the second HDD bay plastic cover and didn?t find any connectors.

But you can use both operating systems on one HDD.
You could create a second partition and on this partition you could install the Win XP.

But this is a little bit tricky.
The point is that the XP would overwrite the Master boot record and would change the Vista boot manager.
After the XP installation you would be not able to chose the Vista OS.

But don?t worry buddy? I found a solution. You would need an original Vista DVD. (I borrowed it from a friend)
After the XP installation you have to boot from the Vista CD. This would install the Vista boot manager again.

Now you need a free tool called ?EasyBCD?. This helps you to edit the boot manager and to include new XP entry.

If you want you can google for EasyBCD and more details.

Hi all!

I have a problem with fresh installation WIN XP on Satellite A100-259 (PSAA2E).
I have already deleted partition, formatted (NTFS) and tried to reinstall from recovery disc which originally came with laptop. But every time I try to install a problem is detected (mostly it is 'page fault in nonpaged area').

I also tried to install OS directly from MS Windows XP Home Edition SP2 CD - the same problem.
I have checked partition using PQ Magic and found out that there is 'partition table error #110'. So, what I did:

1) Delete partition -> create new partition -> format (NTFS) -> reinstall from recovery disc -> failed again;
2) Delete partition -> install from original WinXP CD using create and format partition option -> failed again;
3) delete partition (using pq magic) -> create partition (using pq magic) -> format partition-NTFS for win xp option -> check partition-OK no problems -> installation from original win XP CD-install without changes option -> failed again
4) delete partition (pq magic) -> create partition (pq magic) -> format partition-NTFS for win xp option -> check partition-OK no problems -> installation from recovery disc -> failed again

Every time different error is detected, so I can't identify problem. I have no idea what to do. Does anybody have any ideas?

Answer:Problem with fresh installation of Windows XP on Satellite A100-259

Seems there are some problems with the partitions standards.
A friend of mine tried installing the OS from the recovery CD on the notebook which was formatted with Partitions Magic 8 and the installation failed.
It was very strange?

Finally we have formatted the whole HDD using the original Windows XP Pro CD.
We have not deleted the partition but simply booted from this CD and after the passed Setup process, we have formatted the whole HDD and installed the XP without creating any partitions.

Answer:Keyboard problem after spilled drink on my Satellite A100

Hi Bipin,

Unfortunately the only way to repair your notebook will be to replace the keyboard. Usually any liquids which get into the keyboard will leave a residue which shorts the contacts inside and renders one or more of the keys inoperable.

Luckily, new keyboards are not that expensive to buy, and are also relatively easy to replace. Check out the detailed instructions here :-

So both are Intel chips.

Answer:Satellite A100-153 screen lock problem and Windows login?

According to these Toshiba BIOS FAQ document the BIOS update can be done with 2 different procedures: IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

It's possible that you have useed the wrong BIOS update procedure or wrong BIOS.
Well, it's not easy to say why the notebook login freezes. The fact is that the Satellite A100 is a very new notebook and it was delivered with all Microsoft service packs (SP1+Sp2). I don't know if you have installed the unit manually or not but you should use the Toshiba recovery CD.

I would recommend recovering the notebook with the Toshiba recovery CD and then you check if the login problem persists.

I have a audio glitch problem with my Toshiba Laptop.

A USB Alesis Photon x25 USB 1.1 Audio Interface. (which works fine on other computers).

but all still produce this annoying glitch.

Answer:Audio Glitch Problem when playing/recording on Satellite A100

I had the same problem with my Satellite Pro A100 - basically every time the fan kicked in or out, there was a glitch in the audio which pretty much rendered the laptop useless for music.

In the end, I followed the advice from Nelucard and changed the processor/computer driver from ACPI to MPS Multiprocessor PC on Device Manager. I then had to re-install most of my drivers but once this was done, the fan was on all the time, so there are no more glitches - at least not once the laptop has warmed up... initially, the fan still comes in and out but after 3-4 minutes, it's on all the time. I can live with that.

It's far from ideal but in my case it worked and I can now use Reaper, stream audio and use a load of plug-ins without any problems. Hopefully Toshiba will come up with a better solution via a BIOS update in the future but I think this problem has been known about for 7-8 months and nothing has been done so far...

Anyway, good luck and I hope this is of some use.

I' ve recently had problems with my laptop. The probem is that it can't complete a simple automatic function wich is:

Trying to hibernate, standy by, shut down, or restart.

(I am using windows xp home edition)

For example say I want to shut down the computer I normally follow these steps: start menu > turn off computer > turn off.

Then evetually it gets to the screen with the blue backround that says: "Windows is shutting down...", and just stays there and doean's shut down so I have to press and hold the power button until it switches off. So, basically it doesn't complete the function.

The same thing occurs when attempting to Hibernate (stays on the screen saying "Prepearing to Hibernate", Stand by "Stanting by" something like that and on restart it goes to the "Windows is shutting down..." screen.

I don't know exactly why this is happening but I'm assuming some sort of windows problem or a harware problem. I tried to do System Restore but that didn't work because it goes to the same screen again as I mentioned above. I read somewhere that it might be something to do with my profile being to large but im not too sure about that. I asked my uncle about it and he said I should save everything I need and format my computer and then I would have install windows on it. Im thinking that there should some other solution
but I don't know.

Please help!

Hello all,I have a Thinkpad P50 purchased in back in October 2016. I have an issue with both USB ports on the right side, where USB storage will no longer detect after the computer has been on for quite some time (3-4 hours). Other items like USB mice will always work though, and there seems to be power being supplied to the drives. (Lights will come on, USB HDD will spin up). The backside USB ports will always work but I need all of them running. A restart will always fix this, but it's getting troublesome to work with, not to mention I've already had my motherboard replace once due to faulty right side USB ports, and had to wait 3 months for a motherboard. I'd like to take it in for repair, except it will be a PITA to migrate my work files to another computer since I don't have another computer that will take an M.2 at present, nor do I have the time to have my laptop wait at the service center for another 3 months (yes, Lenovo outside the USA is like that). Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this at this point? I have already tried:1. Turning on 'always on USB' in the BIOS2. Doing the same in the Lenovo power settings3. Disabling USB selective suspend setting in the Windows Power Options.4. Disallowing the computer to turn off the USB devices in the device manager.5. Using multiple USB storage devices to test. There doesn't seem to be any newer USB device drivers I can update to at this point.I am running Windows 10 64 Bit. It sounds li... Read more

The usb ports on the side of my P50 (not the ones in the back) won't keep contact with any usb device that I plug into them. I've tried external drives, card readers with and without cables, flash drives, different cables, 3.0 and 2.0 devices, etc. I sent it to Lenovo for repair, and they sent it back saying everything was working properly, even though everything is not. Lenovo's tests must not include use cases of actually plugging devices into those drives.  When I plug a device into the side ports, Windows 10 finds it, then loses it, then maybe finds it again, and always loses it again. Sometimes Windows doesn't find it at all. I have plenty of memory and storage, and an i7 processor. Does anyone know of a video on how to replace the side usb's? I can't find one. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

May I ask what notebook you have???

You said something about the installation of any drivers (newest)?.
Did you really install all necessary and right drivers???
The notebook runs successfully after installation of the Toshiba recovery CD because this CD contains all drivers and important tools?
It occurs to me that you did not install necessary drivers

I have a problem with my notebook, namely with my USB ports.

Few days ago I connected my mp3 in order to charge its battery. I did it when system Windows was starting and after a few seconds ports stopped working. They work for a circa 5 min after start of my computer but only after my notebook is turn off for couple of hours for example night.

They work properly and all of a sudden sound of a disconnected device can be heard and usb ports turn off. I tried a lot of solutions but nothing worked. I deleted all USB ports in device manager.

I checked in BIOS but everything seems to be okay. I tried to disable shutting off usb ports in order to save energy, nothing. Tools which were provided by Toshiba to check hardware see usb ports as working properly. Only usbdview program sees it as unknown device, I tried uninstall it via this program but still nothing.

Do u have any idea what could happened? Or If there is any possibility to fix it without visit in service?
I would really appreciate your help.

Answer:Satellite C650 problem with USB ports

Did you test these USB ports connecting an USB mouse or an USB keyboard?
Do these devices work properly?

I don?t think you need a visit the service.
I think it?s just an software issue?
Since the USB ports are controlled by chipset, I would recommend reinstalling/updating the chipset driver?

The other solution is a little bit drastic? I think about notebook recovery...
It could be possible that registry has been muddled up or some 3rd party software preinstalled on the notebook could affect the USB ports.

I remember that my USB ports did not work after the installation of iTunes.
I had to reinstall the OS once again to get the USB port working again? funny thing was that I installed iTunes once again and the USB still worked properly?

This system has worked well up until a few weeks ago, then suddenly many of the ports on the left side (USB, Ethernet, phones) have failed. I haven't tried the mic or the modem. The PCMCIA slots work. As well, the system could not recognize what video adapter it had, although it works with the default driver. Does anyone have any ideas on the problem and fix?

Answer:T42 failure of many or all of the ports on the left side

your southboard chip on your motherboard could be detaching, but i haven't see many ethernet and phone ports that fails too. akjula66 knows bit more on this issue than i do. If it is indeed the southbridge chip that is causing grief, then you could try a solder reflow or a second hand motherboard change. Or time for a second hand or new upgrade to a new laptop.

My y410p usb ports on the right side of the computer is not working. I plug a device in and it does not do anything. I have reinstalled drivers, rebooted, checked the bios, and even tried running some of the lenovo tools and it says my usb is fine. The USB 3.0 port on the left side of the computer works fine. Any thoughts? It is still under warrenty, but I don't want to set it back in again.

Answer:My Y410p USB 2.0 ports ( on the right side) not working

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Try doing a reset of the BIOS to see if that will clear the problem with the USB ports.  A soft reset can be useful in resolving hardware conflict problems.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
I would also recommend that you shine a flashlight info the ports.  Check to see that there is no debris obstructing the contacts and that the contacts are all aligned and not touching each other.
If the above doesn't resolve the problem then I would suspect there is a problem with the audio card that has the ports mounted on it or the ribbon cable connecting the audio card to the motherboard is not fully plugged in.  Since your system is still under warranty, further repairs are best left to Lenovo Support.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support by using the link below....

The problem had been intermediate and usually happened a day or so after beginning to use machine (it's only used for travel). It has been a week now. I tried removing power cord and shuting down over night and also running battery all the way down, no luck. Most annoying!

Answer:C710-both USB ports on right side do not work, but...

According to this picture the two are connected to the motherboard by a ribbon cable. I'm betting the cable has come loose or is cracked. If you are still in warranty, I'd have Acer fix it for you. If you are out of warranty a decent technician should be able to reseat the cable fairly cheaply.

I bought a computer case with 2 front side usb ports. There are two cables with 3 connectors (one is a 4 wire connector, red-white-green-black, connector two is red-white-green, and connector 3 is just one black wire with a "v" on it) there are two sets of these (usb1 and usb2). Why is there a seperate "v" black wire? and what do the colors represent (+5v, ground etc..) the reason I ask is that the motherboard I bought says it is important that I connect them in the right spot or damage may be done. Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Front side usb ports. what do the wires mean?

You need to check the motherboard manual to ensure you connect to the motherboard properly. Check the manufactuers website for a diagram.

I have a fairly new Lenovo Y510p laptop (only about 3 weeks old). I have had a wireless keyboard and mouse combo hooked up to one of the two USB ports on the left side of the machine. Today, the computer fails to recognize anything plugged into these two usb ports. There is one usb port on the other side of the laptop (right side) that works just fine. I've spent the past few hours trying to troubleshoot the problem to no avail. The laptop seems to vent heat very well and I have not noticed anything else to indicate overheating. Here's a list of the things I have tried, with no success: -System Restore-Uninstall USB root hub in the device manager and reboot-Update the chipset drivers-Multiple system reboots-Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the mouse/keyboard combo (its a Logitech Wireless Wave Combo MK550)-Try different usb devices in the two non working slots (including a wired keyboard and an external wifi adapter)  I really hope that this is not a hardware problem, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was. If anyone has any ideas on what else I can try, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Where can I find any information about the mainboard types used in Toshiba's notebooks?

Due to a BIOS problem I have the option to send my notebook in for repair or change the mainboard by myself.

Now the question:
Is it possible to change the mainboard from the A100-590 with the one from an A100-480?
Are they the same (except maybe graphics card, installed processor ...)?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A100-590 and A100-480 same mainboards?

> Where can I find any information about the mainboard types used in Toshiba's notebooks?
Maybe you could find some info in the internet but such details are mentioned only in the maintance manuals and such documents are not for public usage :(

> Due to a BIOS problem I have the option to send my notebook in for repair or change the mainboard by myself.
I would not recommend doing this. Maybe the motherboard is not damage and only the ROM module must be flashed again with special BIOS.

Satellite A100-590 belongs to the PSAA9E and the A100-480 belongs also to the same series. So I assume both motherboards are the same.

I am considering buying this laptop or maybe the a100-049.... any thought or reviews by people?

I have heard the A100-998 you can't partition the hard drive... but I just want an overall view of these laptops.

Answer:Need some opinion about Satellite A100-998 and A100-049

If you compare both units you will see that A100-998 has better hardware but is delivered with WXP Media Center Edition and A100-049 is delivered with Vista.

I can not tell you anything about price but maybe is A100-998 better solution. It is important that hardware is good enough und you can order Vista anytime. For about 17euro you can order Windows Vista Home Premium.

About partitions I can not tell you much but I can really not believe that you can not do this. Using delivered recovery media you can create partition (it works if you install OS again).

I am very close to buying one of the above. I know the 049 comes with Vista, the 998 withh xp media which can be upgraded to Vista for a nominal amount.

Firstly, does the 049 come with 64 bit or 32 bit vista, I cannot find the answer to that.

Secondly, the 998 has a dedicated graphics card, the 049 seems to be more of a shared one. I am not a game player but you never know. I do like to burn dvd's, edit a few photos etc. Also aware of hard disk sizes.

Since I can get them at a similar price then that is not an issue, I would just appreciate any opinions with reasons. You may tell me something I had not considered.

A100 049 is here

A100 998 is here

Answer:Need your opinions: Satellite A100-049 or A100-998

> Firstly, does the 049 come with 64 bit or 32 bit Vista?
In my knowledge Toshiba delivers the notebooks only with 32bit OS (Vista and XP)

It seems the 049 supports a little bit weaker devices: smaller HDD size and graphic card external memory.
But both cards are not shared memory graphic cards. It?s an external memory.

In you case I would choose the 998 satellite. It seems this notebook supports better hardware performance.

I dropped my laptop about 40 cm onto a wooden floor the other day.
Now both side USB ports are totally broken, and the back 2 are pretty much broken too (If I wiggle the mouse usb cable in the back one I might get lucky for about 10 mins)

What can I do to fix this? and if it's not going to be easy to fix, are there any wireless mouses available which don't need a usb connection?

Answer:Equium A100 - USB ports broken - all 4 of them.

You cannot fix this because the USB ports are a part of the motherboard and if you would like to fix this, then the whole motherboard should be replaced and this is vey expensive.

But as far as I know the notebook supports an PC Card slot. You can use PCMCIA cards, PC Card16bit and Cardbus (32bit).

You could purchase an USB PC card which provides a USB port functionality.

I just bought my wife a brand new HP laptop at Costco. The left side USB ports work, but not the right side. The mouse, flashdrive, etc are ok when plugged in on the right side, but not the left. What gives? Is there an easy fix?

Answer:Brand new HP laptop, right side USP ports not working

This is a little confusing. You say the right side USB ports don't work but the left side ports do. Then you say the mouse and flash drive work on the right side but not the left. If it is new it is still under warranty. Contact Costco to replace it under warranty if there is a problem with it.

I bought my laptop a few days ago and I have problem already.
I've got OTG Databank with HDD (it's Apacer ShareSteno CD211 with 20GB IBM Travel... Disk).

And this is my problem:
Computer cannot start this databank. When I plug it in, Windows notice there is a new device, install driver and... bah! there's nothing next.
No new disk in system. And when I look into Device Manager there's a "!" next to databank and error called "Code 10".

I found info, that it happens because USB port cannot provide enough energy to databank. So I bought a cable which can be plugged into 2 USB ports so it takes additional power from 2nd port. But it doesn't work too!

I'm quite sure databank is fuly operational because it works with at least 2 other laptops and 3 desktop computers.
Could anyone help me?

Answer:A100-529: OTG Databank doesn't work on USB ports

According to the Microsoft page the "Error code 10" appears If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you receive the following error message:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Recommended resolution
Device failed to start. Click Update Driver to update the drivers for this device. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

Ps: This is only a Microsoft tip but if the USB device cannot work because of the low power supply you should check if it work with the external USB hub wich supports a external power supply

I installed an Advent webcam (before exchanging it for a better creative one). Part of the installation process involved installing a USB controller from Microsoft. (OS is Windows XP Home). I uninstalled the Advent software when I returned the webcam.

Since then I've started to get messages every time I plug in a USB device, about a high speed device needing a high speed port.

When I look in Device Manager, I have two sets of USB Serial Bus Controllers:

The first one includes 2 standard OpenHCD USB Host Controllers, 2 USB composite devices, 1 USB printing support, and 2 USB hubs. Their drivers are dated 2001.

The second one includes 1 PCI class USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller and 1 USB Root Hub Device. Their drivers are dated 2006.

I have 4 USB ports and all seem to be using the first set of USB controllers. If I disable any of the controllers, then various USB devices stop working.

As my laptop is only 18 months old, I would have thought that all USB ports were version 2.0?

How can I 'force' the laptop to use the second set of controllers?

Answer:High Speed USB ports on Equium A100

Hi there,

I think the biggest problem is you would waste more time to fix such an driver related issue then just grabbing the recovery CD and performing a recovery of your whole system.

Maybe the fastest way to bring some high-speed life back to your USB 2.0 ports. Otherwise I had suggested to remove all ports from the device manager and let windows after a restart reinstall all drivers, But before you perform the restart it would be better to remove manually ALL previously installed drivers.

Maybe it helps, but if not it would definetively better to perform the recustomization..

The problem started today. None of my microsoft office programmes open up - Word, Excel etc. The suite has been istalled on my computer for the last year and have had no problems. However, yesterday when a update for my sony reader failed to complete I had to 'end task' the sony update - could this have corrupted something? I've removed the sony software from the computer but still nothing works. Everytime I click on the word/excel etc icons to open up the applications I get this message: This file does no have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations panel.

So I accessed the control panel and looked over all these applications and the extensions. All extensions like .doc etc have the correct default programme - e.g. .doc is defaulted to Word. But the problem is that I can't even open up the Word application itself.

I uninstalled the microsoft office 2007 suite through control panel, rebooted the computer and reinstalled. And then I tried the following:-

When I double click on the Word icon on the desktop to open it that way, I get the message: This application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

- I did check out the event log and found this message:

MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have installed correctly.

Answer:Side-by-side configuration problem and file association. Please help!

If you Google the last error message and the CLSID of {b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510} you will find lots of people with the same problem, but they don't all appear to have been "fixed" the same way.
Some involve a DLL file and others seem to implicate AVG.

I am a new notebook user and I wondered if anyone can tell me if my A100-338 psaaqe has bluetooth and where to find it ?
Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Does Equium A100-338 have bluetooth?

Check the bottom of the unit. If the notebook was equipped with internal BT PCI card then a Bluetooth label should be available.
