Satellite A200-1FL: RAM upgrade - What memory can I use?

Question: Satellite A200-1FL: RAM upgrade - What memory can I use?

I'm thinking to upgrade the RAM of my laptop, but I don't know which kind of memory I should buy and which brands are compatible.

The current RAM is 2 GB and I would like to pass to a 3 or 4 GB.
On the other hand I would like to know if this laptop is compatible with Linux.

Preferred Solution: Satellite A200-1FL: RAM upgrade - What memory can I use?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite A200-1FL: RAM upgrade - What memory can I use?

Theoretically you could use the memory modules from different manufacturers.
But the memory modules must support the right specifications.

You should use the modules which are DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM.

You could update the memory up to 4GB but I think it?s not necessary to do this because the windows OS will recognize only 3GB due to the 32bit OS limitation.

Regarding you Linux question;
Fact is that Toshiba doesn?t release any drivers fro the Linux and therefore you have to search for the drivers on any other 3rd party websites. But generally I don?t see any gig troubles with the Linux installation on Toshiba notebooks.

I asked toshiba service here in greece about upgrading the memory that my A200 23W has and they told me to buy a 2gb memory module (I saw than that there was no need for 2 as there was only one module on it but anyway...).

I did so and installed the new memory but since that in System information i can only see this:

OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista Home Premium
Version 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001
Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name COMSPI08-PC
System Manufacturer TOSHIBA
System Model Satellite A200

BIOS Version/Date TOSHIBA V2.40, 15/5/2008
SMBIOS Version 2.4
Windows Directory C:\Windows
System Directory C:\Windows\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume2
Locale Greece
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.0.6001.18000"
User Name ------------------
Time Zone GTB Daylight Time
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4,00 GB
Total Physical Memory 3,00 GB
Available Physical Memory 2,01 GB
Total Virtual Memory 6,19 GB
Available Virtual Memory 5,12 GB
Page File Space 3,29 GB

So my question is WHY AVAILABLE PHYSICAL MEMORY IS STILL 2.01 GB? when i have installed 4GB and the system can see that only in theory.

Answer:4GB memory upgrade on Satellite A200-23W

There is nothing wrong with your system. As you already posted, windows shows your total amount of 4GB physical memory and the total physical memory of 3GB.
The part with the available memory is a windows thing and shows how much memory is left for other programs, because windows needs some of it your its own.

So, if you want to use the full amount of your 4GB you will have to use a 64bit version of Vista, because 32bit versions are limited to a maximum size of 3,29GB as your page file space already indicates.

Hope this cleared some things now.

Hi there!

I have a +*Satellite A200-1AG*+. I'm planing to upgrade the memory to 4GB. Mine uses +(2x1GB) DDR2-667Mhz+ and I've seen that 2 modules of +2GB DDR2-667Mhz+ cost the same as +2x2GB DDR2-800+. Will I benefit in any way from that upgrade? Can I damage my laptop? I've heard that my laptop will run anyway at 667MHz, but I will like to know your views on it before I purchase it.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite A200-1AG - Which memory modules for upgrade?

You can buy both module types. The point is that the fastest modules (DDR2-800) always downgrade compatible to lower system speed. This would mean that the modules will run at 667MHz.

So you don?t destroy your notebook, it?s just a feature. Everything will work properly.

As far as I know your notebook can runs at 667MHz speed.

Hello all,

The Satellite A200-19K is come with 1024MB System Memory. Is that 2 of the 512MB Memory cards or just 1 of 1024MB Memory card in the laptop system?? I would like to add another one 1024MB RAM, is that more slot be available?

The second question is about the NVIDIA graphic card. The Product Specifications mention the Graphics adaptor like below ....

manufacturer : NVIDIA®
type : NVIDIA® GeForce??? Go 7300 supporting TurboCache??? technology
memory : 64 MB dedicated VRAM (up to 335 MB total available graphics memory using TurboCache??? technology with 2 GB system memory)
memory type : DDR Video RAM (resp. DDR Video RAM and DDR system memory combined)
connected bus : 16x PCI Express

My question is, after upgrade from 1024MB to 2048MB System Memory, is that the NVIDIA GeForce will automatic upgrade from 64MB to 256MB for the graphic memory??

Answer:Satellite A200-19K : RAM and Graphic Card Memory upgrade

> Is that 2 of the 512MB Memory cards or just 1 of 1024MB Memory card in the laptop system
I think the notebook was delivered with one 1GB memory module and the second bank should be free.

Now something about the graphic card.
Well, the GeForce Go 7300 graphic card supports own 256MB graphic memory (not shared memory!!!)
But it supports additionally a dedicated memory.
This memory amount is variable and depends on the available main memory.

I think everything runs automatically and you will not need to change any settings to assign this dedicated memory after main memory upgrade

Hi, I am first time here.

I have bought a Toshiba A200 PSAE0E-03J02JDR with 2 GB ram memory. I bought a pair of Corsair ram (2*2GB VS2GSDS667D2). After I installed the memory the computer won't boot. I have intel 945 chipset, which is capable of 4 gb (manual page1-2). The bios version is 1.8 from 2007.

Can anyone help me, please.

The A200 series supports different chipsets;
Intel 945PM
Intel 945GM
Intel 943GML

As far as I know your notebook supports the *Intel 943GML* chipset and this chipset supports max 2GB RAM.
Take a look in your notebook?s user manual *Page 18.*

Summery: 4GB RAM are not possible and therefore your notebook does not boot up.

I am a real novice with this stuff so please bear with me and my dumb questions.

I have a Satellite A200 PSAE3A-07M007. I have had no upgrades at all.
It only has 1gb RAM. It is so slow its driving me nuts.

Cant afford new PC. Can i upgrade it?
What do i need to buy. I am a bit scared of going to someone at the moment as they could tell me anything and i would believe it!

Answer:Satellite A200 PSAE3A is slow - memory upgrade possible?

Hi mate

According to the info which I found [here| ] the memory of Satellite A200 PSAE3A-07M007 can be upgraded up to 2GB RAM.
This means that you can purchase another 1GB RAM module (1GB RAM PC2-5300 memory module) in order to upgrade this unit.

The upgrade is not very difficult.
Check this:

Good luck

I have a small problem!
I have a Satellite A200-1CR and I want to upgrade my memory to 4 GB.
After a little search I found that my pc has 2 slots and supports memory type DDR2-667 with maximum memory 4 GB.

So, I bought two Kingstons KVR667D2S5/2G (2 GB DDR2-667) and after reading the manual, I removed the previous 512 MB and I put the new ones. I started my pc but nothing. Just a black screen!

I put back my old 512 Mb and everything was normal.
Please if you know something, help me...
I don't know if it is important, but I am using WXP and bios version 5.20.
Sorry for my English and thanks anyway!

I tried only one memory every time and everything went normal with 2 GB.
So I think, the problem is that BIOS can't recognize 4 GB.
Is there any possibility to solve this problem?

Answer:Cannot use 4 GB Memory on my Satellite A200

Do you mean the notebook doesn?t start anymore?

The BIOS is able to handle 4GB RAM.
In my personal opinion the both modules cannot work together. Who knows why ?:|
I think you should replace the modules.

According to this page you should use the DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM

I???ve got a Satellite A200-1AB, Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, which has 1GB RAM (2 memories of 512MB). Now I want to expand its RAM capacity to 2GB. If I only change one of its 512MB memories to 2GB will it work like 2.5MB or it is not possible?
Should I match two memories of 1GB each to obtain 2GB instead?
If I set up 1GB + 2GB will it work as a 3GB?
What is the RAM limitation of this notebook?

Answer:Satellite A200-1AB expansion memory

when you place a 2GB and 512MB modules together than you will have 2.5GB RAM memory installed. It works, so don?t be in doubt (the times have changed and we live now in a world with DDR memory which is more flexible than EDO-RAM or SD-RAM) the configuration works and it?s possible.
Check this link to learn more about Random Access Memory and its possibilities.

To match the modules is always a good idea since then the modules will work in the "DUAL-Channel mode" together which brings some more performance.
Here?s a link with more informations about DUAL-Channel:

Yes, the 1Gb + 2GB configuration will also work but not in DUAL-Channel mode.

The RAM limitation is 4GB but you cannot use the whole 4GB due some chipset related limitations.
Please check this link to know more about the "4GB Boundary":

Hope that I answered your questions.. :)

Answer:Need memory modules for Satellite A200-1AE

I found this site:

The 2GB DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) costs about ?81.
You have to use the PC2-5300 but it?s no matter what manufacture it is.

Some no-names modules are not so expensive but the performance is not good.
Anyway, these modules are from Kingston and as far as I know these modules are not bad.

The spec for my Satellite Pro A200-1JV says:-

standard : 512 MB
maximum expandability : 2,048 MB

2 x memory slots (1 to configure)

I assume that I need to "configure" the second memory slot, but cannot figure out how to do this.

Any help gratefully received

Answer:Memory expansion for Satellite A200-23W

You can upgrade the RAM with 800 MHz modules but as far as I know this will not improve the speed and the RAM will ?only? run at 667 MHz.
The reason for this is that the chipset doesn?t support 800 MHz.

The Satellite A200-23W supports up to 4GB so any upgrades are not necessary.

Back to your issue;
Did you check if your notebook Satellite A200-23C supports this kind of card?

As far as I know this notebook supports:

- SD Card 8MB-2GB
- SDHC Card 4GB
- xD picture card 16MB-2GB
- Memory Stick 8MB-256MB
- Memory Stick Pro 256MB-2GB
- MultiMediaCard 8MB-1GB
- miniSD (with SD adapter) 32MB-2GB

Hi All,

I have recently purchased new ram (2 x 2GB) for my Toshiba A200-1DN and I would really appreciate it if you could give a step by step guide to installing it myself.

Also I've heard that static could be bad while doing this. Is this true? If yes, how do I ensure that I'm static free?

My system information is as follows :-
Intel Core Duo T2350 @ 1.86 Ghz 32 Bit
Running Windows Vista Home Premium
Current Ram Installed - 2 x 512 Mb (1GB)

Sorry if my questions seem silly but I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance :o)

I cannot give you a step-by-step installation instruction but I can give you a [LINK|] where pictures are telling more then thousand words. :)

Regarding the static electricity: just take the modules on the edges an avoid touching them on these little black squares (the memory chips). Otherwise there is no special advice I can give you..

Answer:Question about memory frequency on Satellite A200-1GH

That normal, since your CPU is working with a FSB of 533 which does not mean that the FSB rises if you install faster modules. Why do you think, does tosh install such modules if the CPU would be capable of more FSB.
IF the CPU would be capable to run on a higher FSB then why don?t they install faster modules? Because the CPU does only run on a FSB of 533.

Here?s a site which shows the FSB of your CPU ->

Yours is the core2duo mobil "T2450".

Hello, i have an Satellite A200-1CK which has 2gb RAM and up to 256 mb shared graphics memory.

is there a way to check how much my laptop is currently using of this 256 mb and can you manually change this?

for example set the graphic memory to always using 128 mb whether the laptop needs it or not?

i already checked with google and i found some sites which say that you can change something like this in the BIOS but i cant find it there.

Answer:Shared graphic memory in a Satellite A200-1CK

Hi, usually it should be possible if the Bios of the machine supports to change the amount of used memory. Just go into the Bios and check if such option is available. If not then the video RAM is changed automatically which depends of the installed amount of RAM in your machine.

So, just check if your bios supports it to change the size of video memory and if not then you have bad luck. :/

The video RAM will be assigned automatically and you can?t change it. That means if the system needs more video RAM then it will be assigned more video RAM automatically.

But I don?t understand why you need more as 128MB video RAM. I think this is enough because the graphic chip isn?t designed for games.
There are better graphic cards on the market for games.

There is no driver for it for Windows XP, because XP doesn?t support the cache function, it is supported only by Vista.

Answer:Satellite A200-1AG shows 0 MB video memory

I don?t know how you tested it or what you have done with your notebook but the Satellite A200-1AG PSAECE was delivered with the nVIDIA GeFoce Go 7300 graphic card and it supports a External video memory with TurboCache.

Local cache is 64MB and the TurboCache value depends on the main memory amount for example;
64MB of turbo cache with RAM 512MB
256MB of turbo cache with RAM 1024MB

The total video memory is a sum of local cache and Turbo Cache.

I think you have checked the graphic card memory simply in wrong way!

Hi, another question.

I am unsing an A200-1CC, it has an Intel 945 Express Chipset Family implanted. I was trying to install a game that requires 256MByte Grahics Memory. I received an error message "Shadow Pixel 1.1" maybe not supproted ... and the FAQ-page of the maanufactured told me to be sure to habe 256MB in use.

The A200-1CC has a 1024MB RAM and uses only a little more than 100MB graphic memory. I check the Intel web-page. My 945 Chipset supports Shadow Pixel; and the maximum grpahics memory in use in 256MB. So I have increased my mainboard-memory to 2048 MB today. However; it still shows 122MB graphics memory in use. The intel-page states that sometimes you can adjust the DMTV in the bios, but that does not apply to my system.

Any chance to set the graphics memory in use to 256MB? --- I am using a Vista system.... ???

Thanks in advance for any idea you might have.

;-) Ingo

Answer:Satellite A200 - How to increase the graphics memory?

No, you can?t increase the video RAM and there is no option to change this.
The video RAM will be assigned automatically but you can?t change this.

I know these aren?t good news but in my opinion the Intel graphic card is not designed for gaming. A nVidia or ATI graphic card would be a better solution for gaming.

please i need a BIOS update , i need that 4 GB in my machine.

Hi there,

thats normal because the shared video memory is increasing when adding more main memory to the system. I have the same problem so I just have 3 Gigs of main memory and 1 Gig (!!) graphics memory. But a technician which is a friend of me told me, everything above 2 Gigs of RAM is totally urecognizable till you have really BIG files to open.

Short explanation ;): You have 4 Gig of main memory and the intel chipset is taking 1 gig (or 768MB) for shared video memory.

I have a Satellite A200 12x (PSAECE) with Windows7-64 bits and I wanted to increase its memory. This laptop has 2GB (4GB MAX), so I bought one stick of 2GB to try it and everything was ok. Then I bought another memory stick of 2GB, same model as previous one, and after installing it Windows says: Installed 4GB - usable 3GB.

My first thought went to the BIOS so I searched an upgrade for it, but there is just two BIOS upgrades for this laptop: Windows vista 1.8 (I have this one) and Windows XP 5.2.

Is there any path I can take to achieve the memory increasing? or this possible memory upgrade to 4Gb was just a marketing hook.

The A200 Equium computer comes with 2GB onboard (2 x 1GB) I understand that it can be upgraded to at least 4GB. Now I am aware of memory limits to 32 bit systems so I was considering upgrading to 3GB (ie., 1 x 1GB and 1x2GB). Is it possible to do this without any problems? Your thoughts are welcome and thanks also included in advance!

Answer:Upgrade of Memory for Equium A200-15i computer

If the notebook can handle with 4 GB RAM I do not see any problems with upgrade using 1 x 2 GB module.

Have you already founded a compatible one?

My laptop is a Satellite A200-1WR, code PSAE3E-05J01CCE, having 2.048 (1.024 + 1.024) MB RAM memory.
I'm wondering if it is possible to upgrade to 4GB memory
In the specifications, it is stated that the maximum expansion is 2GB.

However, I don't know if 2GB is the maximum expansion for each slot, being possible to have two modules of 2GB each, or the mother board is only able to stand 2GB altogether.

Thanks in advance

Answer:RAM upgrade in Satellite A200-1WR

Unfortunately this notebook model can handle with 2GB RAM only.
Sorry but upgrade to 4GB is not possible.

I'm planning to upgrade my HDD and RAM.
Currently I'm using a 120gb SATA HDD and 2x512mb ddr2 667Mhz (out of the box state).
My questions are:

[1] Will a WD Scorpio blue 500gb 5400rpm SATA II HDD work on my laptop? if not, what is the max allowed GB for my laptop's HDD (if there's any)?
[2] Will a 2x2gb ddr2 667Mhz work? if not, what is the max allowed?

Btw, Specs are Intel Core2Duo T5300 1.73Ghz, Vista home premium sp2 OS (pre-loaded), Phoenix ver. 1.20 bios, Chipset is intel 945 (I think).

Thanks in advance.

Answer:HDD and RAM Upgrade for Satellite A200 1AE

> 1] Will a WD Scorpio blue 500gb 5400rpm SATA II HDD work on my laptop?
It should work since SATA controller is not limited to any HDD size.

> [2] Will a 2x2gb ddr2 667Mhz work? if not, what is the max allowed?
The notebook supports the Intel? 945GM chipset. The RAM upgrade depends on the chipset.
As far as I know the 667Mhz RAMs would be clocked down to 533Mhz?
But you can upgrade this to 4GB RAM (2 x 2GB)

I am thinking of upgrading my RAM, from 2 gig to 3 or 4 gig.
I know windows 32 bit only recognises 3 gig max, but I was wondering if it would be better to install 2x2g then 1x2 gig and 1x1 gig?
Another question I have:
I opened my laptop to see what was inside right now, and it seemed that it had 2 parts of ram inside (photo:
. So I was wondering, is this 2x1 gig? Or is one of them just a fake one to fill the slots?

So in short: do I have to buy a 1 gig or a 2 gig RAM, and do I have to remove one that is installed in order to install the new (2gig) one?

Answer:Satellite A200-1TW - I want to upgrade the RAM

It?s not a fake the both modules that have 2GB (2 x 1GB).

Your Satellite A200 can be upgraded to 4GB RAM. So you can buy 2 x 2GB DDR2-667 RAM for notebooks.
But don?t forget that Windows XP will only recognize 3GB. For 4GB you need a 64bit OS.

Here you can read more about the limitation on 32bit OS:

I would like to upgrade my CPU.
Currently a T2080 is installed and I'd like to install a T7300?

Can anyone tell me if this is possible with my motherboard?

The motherboard has the following specifications:
Intel 940GML/943GML (Calistoga-GML) + ICH7-M / U
ID Laptop Model: Satellite A200-1AS (PSAE0E)

Does anyone have a list with all CPU running with this motherboard?

Thanks for helping.

Answer:Satellite A200 - CPU Upgrade possible?

Did you read some threads here in the forum about the CPU upgrade possibilities?
Do that!

Fact is that CPU upgrade is not easy as for example on desktop PCs.
The BIOS is always different and modified by notebook manufacturers.
So even if the chipset would allow you to upgrade the CPU, there is still a question if BIOS would handle this new CPU. So such upgrades are always risky.

The notebook uses the Mobile Intel 943GML Express Chipset

So you have to check what CPUs are supported by this chipset:

Here on the page 30 you can find this:
+All features supported by Mobile Intel 940GML / GM Express Chipset shall be supported+
+by Intel 943GML Express Chipset unless noted otherwise below.+

_+Processor Support+_
+? Intel? Processor A100 and A110 on 90 nm Process with 512-KB L2 Cache 400-MHz+
+front side bus (FSB) support+

So you should check what CPUs are supported by Intel 940GML

Here you can find the list of ?Compatible Products?

hello.. i would like to know what is the max number of ram which i can use at my laptop if i install the vista service pack,
can my laptop get 8gb and vista can use all of them?
thnx for all:)

Answer:Satellite A200-10W - max RAM upgrade

Google found this:

It can support 4GB max.

Only the new Intel Montevina chipset in the latest laptops support 8GB.

Windows XP and Vista 32bit are limited to about 3GB. The memory address space above 3GB is virtually mapped to the Video Card and other devices. So you will waste 1GB if you installed 4GB of RAM.

If you want to use more than 3GB, you need to install Vista 64bit.

I don?t know how much it costs to upgrade to 4GB RAM. This depending on the modules that you can buy and where do you buy it.
For upgrade the RAM you need modules with DDR2 (667MHZ) specification.

And changing the RAM is pretty easy. Check your user manual, there you can find some instructions and pictures how to do this. ;)

Hi mate,

you can upgrade your machine up to 4GB but only 3.5GB will be recognized. So if you want to upgrade your machine to 2GB then there is no problem, the 2GB will be recognized as 2GB.

You do only need 2x 1GB DDR2 SO-DIMM modules

I want to upgrade processor in my A200-1M8 (now there is T7100).

I consider two processors:
a) T7700 Merom with 65nm, Sockets Supported PBGA479, PPGA478
b) T8300 Penryn with 45nm, Sockets Supported BGA479, PGA478

I'd prefer Penryn becouse of low power consumption and less heat generated then Merom.
But I don't know for sure, will Penryn run on my laptop?
There are also no bios updates for A200-1M8 (PSAE6E) - I gess, that my bios doesn't support newer T8300.

I searched internet and didn't find anyone who did this before.

Thanks for help

Answer:CPU upgrade on Satellite A200-1M8

Hi, upgrading the CPU is not advisable since the cooling system and power supply are designed to support a certain range of CPU's. If a high performance CPU is installed, it can cause stability/cooling problems, or it may damage the Mainboard, or not boot at all.

If you must upgrade the CPU, the best option would be to use a CPU model that is available in the other PSAE6E-xxxxxx models. If one of those other PSAE6E models use a T7700, then it should work fine in your A200.

Hello, im a owner of laptop A200-1N7 and i want to upgrade parts in it. Could some of the staff provide information of:

-max supported CPU for this laptop
Wonder will those cpu work:
T4500 FSB is 800Mhz
T3400 FSB is 667Mhz
T2390 FSB is 533Mhz - same as T2310 in A200
Now I would say T2390 will work for sure, T3400 maybe, but it would be good if T4500 would run. All those are Socket-P, all have TDP35W and all are at roughly the same voltage.

-max supported ram - i know book says 2gb, but maybe there is some BIOS upgrade or so that takes care about that limit, at least 2x2gb would be awesome

-max supported drive + max power the drive can take up, I was wondering about buying a SSD drive, since this is a laptop just for few months and I could use it later in the new one

-link to the latest drivers & bios page

I would really appreciate the help. Please don't answer in style: You should do that or that because you can damage it/you should go to TOSHIBA center and bla bla bla. I have Satellite Pro A200-1YK with the following features
1. Intel? Pentium? Dual-Core Processor T2330 1.6 GHz
2. 2048 (1024 + 1024) MB DDR2 RAM (667 MHz)
3. 200 GB hard Disk

Can I upgrade the RAM to 4GB (2048 + 2048)? If Yes, should it be DDR2 or DDR3?

Can i upgrate the hard drive too? If yes, will the system support 500GB hard Drive? If yes, what would be the model/product you recommend?

With change in RAM, do I have to update the drivers? If Yes, what are they?

Answer:Can I upgrade Satellite Pro A200-1YK?

Both components you can upgrade: RAM and HDD.

RAM upgrade:
According the specifications of Satellite Pro A200-1YK it uses an Intel GL960 Express Chipset. That means it supports up to 2GB RAM and therefore an upgrade is not possible because you have already 2GB.
Here are specifications of your chipset:

HDD upgrade:
I think on HDD upgrade there is no capacity limit because your notebook supports already SATA interface.
So I assume 500GB should be no problem. You need a 2.5? notebook HDD with SATA interface and that?s all! :)

Hello all,

Don't worry I'm not here to ask about only 3GB of RAM showing in a Windows 32bit system! :-P

I am wanting to upgrade the RAM on my A200 and what I was wondering was can I only upgrade with 667MHz RAM? I know the FSB on the processor is 800MHz so can I not use 800MHz RAM? I had a look in the BIOS to see if there was an option to change the speed ratios like on my desktop but I couldn't find anything. Is the RAM speed locked and if so is there an update to the BIOS available that will allow it to be changed?

Hopefully this isn't a really dumb question but thanks in advance!

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro A200 - RAM Upgrade

RAM with more MHz will not make your notebook faster. I am not 100% sure but FSB speed on mainboard is 533 MHz and RAMs you have inside are 667MHz.

If you can upgrade RAM up to 4 GB use compatible 2 GB RAM with part number PA3513U-1M2G.

I was planning on upgrading my A200-1QK (320Gb HDD).

I was looking for a HDD with more space and possibly with more speed, I work with audio mixing composing and recording software and libraries tend to eat a lot of space (I know a desktop would be the best option and I have one but sometimes I need a more portable solution). I even thought of running the OS from an external SATAII 1TB HDD but I don't know if it possible.

Well but the question here is:
What are the technical proprieties I must look for in a HDD so it would work on my laptop?
Is there any 7200rpm avaible for laptops? I'm looking for something 500GB or bigger.

Thank you in advance =)

Answer:Satellite A200-1QK - Need new HDD for upgrade

Theoretically you can buy an HDD with 7200rpm but it produces more heat and need a little bit more power as 5400rpm model. So it?s your choice what you buy. ;)
You can buy every 2.5? notebook HDD with SATA or SATA2 connector. If you search a little bin on online shops you should find enough 500GB HDDs with 7200rpm.

I have good experience with Hitachi and Western Digital HDDs.

how do you assign more memory to the graphics card on Satellite A200-1V0 laptop?

Answer:Question about graphics card memory on Satellite A200-1VO

Hi there,

in your case it?s not possible to change the size of graphics memory by yourself because the graphics memory in your machine is shared with the main memory, so if you upgrade the main memory then the graphics memory should increase. But this is regulated by the chipset and the user has no influence on it.

First of all the Satellite A200-1M5 seems to belong to the PSAE0 series and you should choose exactly this model on Toshiba European driver page if you want to download the compatible drivers.

Now back to your issue;
Did you check if the SD card controller has been recognized properly?
You should do this!

The point is that you need the Flash Media Driver to get the SD card controller working!
The Flash Media driver is for your Bridge Media Slot.
This slot lets you insert either a SD card, Memory Stick (Pro) or xD picture card.

If you have already installed this then I think you should reinstall it again?

Hi everybody,

I want to improve the performance of my computer Toshiba A200 and then I have decided to buy a 2 Gb Memory Ram Module.
Looking the results of this forum and the report from an application called Everest (I am sure you know it) the memory I must buy is DDR2-667 MHz (PC5300) DDR2 RAM 200 pin SO-DIMMs.

I was about to buy this kind of memory and then looking for more information on the internet, I found a very interesting page with lots of useful post about computer world. One of the post was titled 'Selecting RAM for your LAPTOP', and it explains that the memory that suits to your computer depends on the processor you have... It's curious because my processor is T7500, and in the post I find this

Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 Processors:
DDR2-800 MHz (PC6400) DDR2 RAM 200 pin SO-DIMMs

So, what do you think, can I buy this kind of memory (faster than the one I have assembled), or the information in this post is false.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Curiosity about RAM upgrade on Satellite A200

The processor will run at the speed the bios is locked to. Some people like to nudge the bios and buy a faster mem chip hoping to overclock. Ram is backward compatible speed wise ie 800 ram will work at 667. Buy the recommended ram and pop it in.

Hi to all.....
I would like to ask something.....

I have toshiba Satellite A200-1cr with 120GB HDD.....

I would like to change my HDD. I 've found a hard drive 2.5" with 250GB.

My questions are the following:

1) My knowledge of desktops are very very good. Is it easy to change it on my own?
I guess it is but i want to be sure.. I suppose it gets IDE on it, right?? No SATA at all?

2) If i changed it am i losing my guarantee?

3) Can i give my notebook in a Toshiba official shop in greece and let them do the change?
Can i take it in an unofficial shop, too??

4) Can i put on the notebook 2x 250GB such us new toshiba laptops?
Is there enough space in the notebook for such a change?

thank you in advance.......

Answer:Satellite A200-1CR: Question about HDD upgrade

Hi buddy

It?s good that you ask this.

1) The Satellite A200-1CR supports SATA and not IDE interface and therefore you would need a SATA HDD. It?s really not difficult to replace the HDD and as far as I know you should find some details in the user manual. There is a useful instruction and pictures which explain the whole procedure.

2) Hm? as far as I know the HDD replacement does not cancel the warranty and has no affect on the warranty state.

3) You can also contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country for a HDD replacement but in my opinion this is really not necessary because the replacement is not very tricky. As I said above, check the user manual.

4) I don?t think that your notebook would support 2 x 250GB HDD.
Of course, there are some other notebook series which are abele to support two HDDs but I don?t think that your A200 notebook support it.

Just a little comment about the new HDD:
Fact is that some bigger HDD are not supported by BIOS. I mean a upgrade from 120GB to 250GB HDD is really a big step an possibly your BIOS would not recognize the HDD correctly.
Therefore I would recommend testing the HDD firstly before buying.

You have to use the DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM memory modules. Usually it?s no matter what RAM manufacture it is. It?s only important that you would use the right memory modules which support the right specifications.

By the way; you can also order the right memory module from the Toshiba ASP. Just contact the ASP technician and ask for the compatible parts.

Resently i bought Intel T7500 (2,2ghz)..
Can i upgrade this laptop with this cpu?? What bios can i updated it to?

Sorry for my language mistakes...

Answer:Satellite A200-23Q - Cpu upgrade question

Usually the CPU upgrade is not advisable.
First of all the BIOS which was developed for this unit, has not been tested with different CPUs and in worst case the BIOS will not be compatible with the new CPU.

The Chipset should support this CPU;

Chapter 1.1.1 Processor Support:
The chipset supports the Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile processors 533Mhz and 800Mhz FSB support.

The Intel? Core?2 Duo Processor T7500 supports 800 MHz FSB so it should be supprted by chipset.

But once again; there are other reasons why the CPU upgrade should not be done;
The BIOS is one reason.
The second reason is the higher heat dissipation which would be created by stronger CPU? this could affect the notebook functionality as well.

Hi Guys ,,
MY laptop is Satellite A200-10w , I wanna ask if there is a place to install second HDD or not and can I upgrade my HDD to 1TB (1 tera) or the mother board doesnt support this ?

Answer:Satellite A200 - upgrade to 1 tera HDD

If I am remembering well at the bottom side you will find two HDD covers. Remove the second one and check if HDD connector is available.
If connector is there you can put second HDD.

What to say about new HDD. I believe you are the first one who wants to have 1 tera HDD in notebook. As far as I know some new notebooks support HDDs up to 500GB and I am not sure 1 tera will be recognized properly.

Lets see if someone else can confirm this.

Approximately 2 years ago I bought Toshiba notebook Satellite A200-23P with Windows Vista perinstalled. Now I want upgrade to Windows 7. I download Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, it wrote me that:

1) More info from TOSHIBA TOSHIBA has a website that might give you more information about getting Windows 7 running on your PC. Visit the TOSHIBA website
(i haven't found any information on your web-site regarding updates issues)

And information about TOSHIBA software like: Disc Creator, DVD Player, Config Freeetc... that they "don't have compatibility information about this version of the program"

I want to know is it safe upgrade to Windows 7? Do i need to make some preparations or smth like that? Or is it better to just stay on Vista ).

Answer:Satellite A200-23P - Upgrade to Windows 7

As far as I know on official Toshiba website there are no information anymore regarding Windows 7 upgrade because this Windows 7 upgrade offer did already end few months ago.

Before you make an upgrade or new installation, check on Toshiba website if all drivers and tools are available for your notebook.
If yes the upgrade shouldn?t be a problem but I would prefer a clean installation. Properly it will run smoother instead the upgrade version.

I have a Satellite A200. PSAFCA-01K00J. This is the system bought in Australia around mid 2007. There is currently a Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 GPU intslalled on the system.

Initial inquiry leads me to belive there is limited upgrade options for the latop, however there seems to be a number of anomalies to lead me to think upgrade may be within reach. For example.

In my user manual, it describes my gpu as the following:

lnVidia GeForce Go 7300 model:
External 128 MB VGA DDR2 RAM (depending on the model you purchased).

Now the external word i believe refers to type of interface. As some A200 have the Intel 258mb Gpu marked as intergrated (and i am aware intergrated means no chance of upgrade). This sugests the nVidia is not intergrated and leads me to belive it is MXM connection and therefore changeable / upgradeable.

Another thing to back up this idea is the Nvidia software found in the control panel, has a section on system information and it describes the bus as PCI express X16. That if i am not mistaken refers to a normal PCIe slot - definately changeable. However being a laptop they may have made it Mobile and hence Mobile PCI Express Module and i am back to MXM with upgrade capabilties.

Can this be confirmed please, and are there any toshiba fans that could lead me to an apropriate card - maybe off the shelf Nvidia or even a used one from a later toshiba laptop. preferable 512mb or at least a 256mb.

I ike using this latop, never had a problem. ... Read more

Answer:Satellite A200 (PSAFCA) - Can I upgrade the GPU?

In my opinion it?s not possible to exchange the graphic card. As far as I know the graphic chip is soldered on the mainboard.

Furthermore if the graphic card would be exchangeable I think the mainboard and/or BIOS will not support the new graphic card. The point is that notebooks are not so upgrade friendly as desktop PCs.

Check this Toshiba document and think about this:

Hi friend,

what you need are two "DDR2 PC5300" RAM sticks with a frontsidebus of 667Mhz.

Like these one:

I would recommend kingston since they are known to work well in almost all mobile computer devices from a big brand..

Hi there everybody,

I bought Satellite A200-13O and as i found in forum Jayjay says:

bq. "the notebook can be upgraded up to 4GB (2x 2GB). But Windows OS will not recognize the full 4GB. It recognized only 3 GB due to the 32bit OS limitation":0

Q1- is spare 1GB of RAM cause any problem, when is not used?

Q2- can spare 1GB wait in my notebook until is 32bit upgrade to 64bit?

Q3- how can i upgrade 32bit processor to 64bit?

And just need confirm a report from R2D2 about advice to guy with A200-14D who have "problem with RAM" which is similar to my confusion-

bq. "...The notebook was equipped with the 667Mhz modules but the FSB supports max 533Mhz. Therefore the modules run max with the 533Mhz (double channel) speed..."

Q4- can i install 2x 2GB DDR2 667MHz PC2-5300 SO-DIMM despite FSB run just 533MHz?

PS: could you recommend good antivirus, i'm not satisfied with norton because it's really really really slow!

thanks to everybody for advice (!)

Answer:Satellite A200-13O: Need some answers about RAM upgrade

This article can be interesting for you

Q1 ? No
Q2 ? Yes
Q3 ? as described in technical document 4 GB will be recognized if you install Vista 64-bit.
Q4 ? Yes you can.

Antivirus ? the best thing, for me, is AVIRA antivir -
The application does not need many resources and runs perfectly. I use it for years now.

I have Satellite A200-1CR, PSAE0E-02G01TSK
I have 2Gb of RAM
Can I install 4Gb of RAM (because I try 2x2Gb, 800MHz) and don?t working.

Do I need only 667 MHz or my laptop supports only 2Gb?

Answer:Question about RAM upgrade on Satellite A200-1CR

Your notebook can be upgraded up to 2 GB only and for upgrade you must use compatible 667 MHz modules.
For successfully upgrade I recommend you 2 X 1 GB DDR2-667 with part number PA3512U-1M1G.

My Satellite A200-1AB has an MK8037GSX GB hard drive.
It's in working order but I'd like to replace it with a larger capacity drive, say 500 GB.

Can anyone tell me if this would be straightforward, for instance would any new 2.5" SATA drive be compatible?

I have the Windows Vista Home Premium product recovery CD which came with the machine, and assume that I can just swap the drives and reinstall from the CD.

Answer:Satellite A200 HDD drive upgrade

SATA controller is not limited to an specific HDD size?so it should not be big problem using bigger HDDs like 500GB.
It's important that you would use SATA 2.5? HDD?

Answer:Processor upgrade on Satellite A200-18W

Hello Xavier

As you probably know CPU upgrade is not supported. I understand you that you want to have more powerful machine but have you tried to make lower level hardware upgrade to get better performance? I mean RAM.

Satellite A200 is known to me and I still use old P200. With maximum RAM and Win7 32 bit my P200 runs perfectly. For everyday activities and older games machine is perfect si I think CPU upgrade is definitely not necessary.

Is there some ?special? reason why do you need faster CPU?

I have a toshiba Satellite Pro A200 running Vista. Vista came preloaded and I don't have any discs for it. I have had it since new (Sept 2007). The hard drive is split into drives. Recently my C drive has competely filled up and I now have no space left (55gigs gone) I store no data in this drive. All my media (music, photos, other files) is in my E drive. I have to run C Cleaner each time I boot up in order to have enough space to operate the computer. I also have to delete all but the most recent restore point in order to function.

I am at my wits end and think I must have a virus or something. Is there a way to restore the computer to 'new'? I have all my files backed up on an external hard drive so I don't mind starting from scratch. Bearing in mind I have no install discs as Vista came pre-loaded.

Can anyone help????? please!

In the manual of my Equium A200 PSAE8E it is described the possibility for the user to add a second internal hard disk and to upgrade the memory from 2GB to 4GB. This can be done by the final user without taking the notebook to the local service for repair.

I would like to order a 200GB second internal hard disk, as well as to replace the 2 chips of 2GB Ram with 2 chips of 4GB, but I cannot find the product IDs for those add-ons, since it seems that Toshiba model PSAE8E is not recorded for compatibility.

Anyone has technical details on product IDs and cost to be sure to order the right parts without compatibility issues?

Answer:Equium A200 PSAE8E: Need additional info about the memory and HDD upgrade

I would like to add some info about the second HDD upgrade on the Equium A200 notebooks.
As far as I know all A200 are delivered with the second HDD slot. This slot is available but not all A200 notebooks could be upgraded with the second HDD because the second HDD controller interface is missing.

Therefore you should be 100% sure if your notebook can handle the second HDD.
You can simply check this removing the second HDD slot cover and check if the HDD connection is available.
If not, then you cannot upgrade the notebook with second HDD.

Now something about the memory modules;
I have investigated in the internet for some compatible modules and surprise, surprise ;)
Found this wonderful site:

According to the info the notebook supports DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM memory modules.

All parts like memory modules or HDD can be ordered also from the authorized service provider in your country!!!

Answer:Can't load BIOS after RAM upgrade - Satellite A200

I don't know what have you done and why this happen but what you can do is to check if ?fast boot? option is enabled.
Open Toshiba Assist > optimize > HWSetup > Boot priority and check boot speed option there.
Be sure it is set to ?Normal?.

Please check this and send some feedback.

After SP3 upgrade of XP I have problem with TFncky.

- A200/PSAE7
- XP Pro (2x XP with OS selector, 1st XP main OS, 2nd XP for gaming)

After XP startup of my main XP installation I always get an error message pop-up stating that there is prob with TFncKy and TFncKy has to be stopped. As "problem signature" I get following:

+AppName: tfncky.exe AppVer: ModName: ntdll.dll+
+ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 00012ace+

Using one of following keys on keyboard always results in above described error pop-up but key are functional:
WinLogo, DEL, HOME, PGUP/-DN, END, right SHIFT, FN + F-Keys etc.

My second XP installation (stripped down for gaming) runs smooth after SP3 upgrade - no error TFncKy related error message.

As my second XP runs without any problems after SP3 I am not sure if the proplem is related with +tfncky.exe+ or +ntdll.dll+.

Which driver package includes "tfncky.exe"? Toshiba Controls?

Thanks in advance for any information or hint to solve this problem!

Best regards,

Answer:TFncKy.exe problem after XP SP3 upgrade on Satellite A200

the problem was already discussed in another thread:

The last post was probably the solution for the whole case. The user mentioned the "TfncKy.exe" belongs to the Toshiba Hotkey utility which must only be removed and reinstalled to resolve that issue.

Additionally it would make sense to perform a registry check with e.g. CCleaner before reinstalling the Hotkey Utility.

*Hello !*

I have got a dual boot with windows xp/ubuntu. I want to upgrate my BIOS for more functions but can I replace the v1.7 to the v5.6 ? I have read : "This Bios is only compatible for Notebooks with Windows XP". -->

Bios 5.6 and my computer

I don't want to crash my computer.

Sorry if my English is not perfect... I am French.

Answer:BIOS upgrade question on Satellite A200-25B

Hi there,

I would suggest that you stick to the WXP BIOS updates. The reason v5.x upgrades are available (and saying that the BIOS is only compatible with notebooks with Windows XP) is because they are BIOS updates to enable installation of Windows Vista.

If you do not wish to upgrade to Windows Vista, stay with WXP BIOS's in the range v1.x - v2.x (also check that the BIOS is specifically for Windows XP or not).

Hope this helps.

Is it possible to change the graphics card on Satellite A200 and if its possible how to do it and witch card to use?

Answer:Graphic card upgrade on Satellite A200

Yoo should try search first, because I remember this topic. And no, it is not possible to upgrade graphic card, because it is part of the mainboard and it is not like easy or intended to change graphic cards.

I think if you really want to have more performance, at least for games, then you have to look for an other machine like the Qosmio ones.
Sorry to tell you that, but those days it is impossible. Maybe it will be with future notebooks but, who knows?

I read several times that I can install 4gb ram in this laptop (2 2gb) but it only works with 2gb.

I bought it here: c.htm&SNO=00000886

I know that the Toshiba website says it would only accept max. 2gb.
Both 2gb ram work, I tested both of them seperate. Also 2gb plus 512MB won't work. So is it true that it only accepts 2gb? I run Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
Thanks a lot for your help! I'm almost about to send the other 2gb ram back, but I would really like to make it work! ;-)

Answer:Satellite A200-1CC doesn't start after 4GB RAM upgrade

This model has a Pentium DualCore T2080 CPU, which is limited to 2GB max RAM. The models with a Core2Duo (T7xxx series) usually support 4GB or RAM.

So the optimal solution would be to use 2 x 1GB RAM Modules.

You may have luck getting one 2GB module working with a 1GB module in the second slot, but its not recommended and may be unstable or cause other problems.

Installing Vista 64bit wont help. Its a limitation of the CPU/Chipset.
