Satellite A40: Question about UJ-850 DVD drive upgrade

Question: Satellite A40: Question about UJ-850 DVD drive upgrade

I have a satellite A40 that I have recently fitted a new motherboard to. Everything is now working perfectly, and I am considering changing the CDRW/DVD drive for a dvd writer.

The current drive is a panasonic UJDA750. I am planning on replacing this with a UJ-850 for the dvd writer. Could anybody please inform if this is a good drive to go for any alternate suggestions, and if I will need any different drivers for the drive to work or should it just be a straight swap out.

Preferred Solution: Satellite A40: Question about UJ-850 DVD drive upgrade

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite A40: Question about UJ-850 DVD drive upgrade

Before you will buy an slim drive you have to be sure that this drive is compatible with the A40 Satellite.
There is a big difference between external drives for desktop PC and notebooks drives.
The master/slave/c-sel settings on the slim drives are fixed and not changeable.

If you will buy a slim drive with wrong settings the BIOS will not recognize the drive and you will get an IDE #1 error.

I would recommend contacting the authorized service provider in your country and ask the guys for compatible DVD writer for you A40.

As compatible DVD-R/RW drive you could use the Toshiba SD-R6112 or DVD?RW drive Pioneer G8CC0001L810.
I found also some compatible DVD-Multi (CD-R/RW DVD-RAM/R/RW) drives:
Panasonic G8CC00019810
TEAC G8CC00013810

Sorry for the strange numbers but I assume this are Toshiba part numbers.
Try to google. Maybe you will find a whole name.

I have a Sat A60 Laptop with a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. I want to upgrade to a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. I understand I have the choice between UJDA-750 and the SD-R2512. Can anyone offer a preference and will I need firmware / drivers for these to work?
Is it simply a matter of just replacing the unit?

Answer:Satellite A60: Question about CD-RW drive upgrade

I presume that the better idea is to have DVD burner. In this case there is possibility to burn all CDs and DVD formats. I have found info that A60 is also delivered with super-multi drive (TEAC DV-W24E) and this should be also compatible with your A60.

For functionality the firmware is not relevant as drive compatibility.

I have been trying for quite a while to get a new hard drive for my S1900 102. I think I have found one but am not sure if it will fit. The person told me that it will fit in a Toshiba but that was all. It is an 80 GB 2.5" 9 mm 4200 rpm IDE Laptop Hard Disk Drive. Will this work in my model? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite 1900-102: Question about Hard Drive upgrade

the problem here is not whether the HDD will fit in the notebook or not (BTW it will).
The problem is if the BIOS can recognise HDDs with this capacity. And I think it doesn't.
But maybe there's a new BIOS version available.
Sorry I don't have the info to say it more clearly.

I have a toshiba Satellite 1130-z24, which requires a new hard drive, the old one is a 20GB MK2108GAP but i would like to fit a larger capacity drive. What is the maximum size drive i can use without encountering compatibility problems?

Would any of the following drives work?

MK6034GAX 60GB
MK8026GAX 80GB
MK1032GAX 100GB

I have searched various forums and websites but the only information i can find is that the BIOS wont support drives over a certain size, but I cant find out how much this is.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite 1130-z24: Hard Drive upgrade question

I think this oldie supports the IDE controller.

The IDE controller handles max 128GB HDD due to the 28bit LBA support.

So in your case I would recommend choosing an HDD which is not bigger than 120GB?
so theoretically the MK1032GAX 100GB should be compatible?

Answer:Satellite A100-692: drive upgrade and Wlan shutdown question

1.) I don?t know if it helps but you can try to reinstall the Wlan driver.

2.) You should know that not all drives are compatible and supported on the notebook. The best way is to contact the Toshiba service partner in your country if you want to order the compatible drive. It?s important because of the master/slave/csel settings.
If the drive has wrong settings the BIOS will not recognize the device

i want to change the processor of my laptop that have a intel t2310 (1.46Ghz/1Mb cache) and i've tried with a intel t7200 but doesn't worked.
Can anyone tell me what processors i can install in the laptop.

Thank you,

Answer:Satellite L40-15G - CPU upgrade question

You can use only the CPUs which are supported by chipset and BIOS.
As far as I know the Satellite L40/EQUIUM L40/Satellite Pro L40/Satellite L45 computer is equipped with an Intel Pentium Duo Processor or Intel Celeron M Processor.

These processors were built in:

Pentium Duo Processor (533MHz) 1.6GHz (T2060) /1.73GHz (T2080)/1.86GHz (T2090)/1.86GHz (T2130)

Celeron M Processor (533MHz) 1.73GHz (430) /1.86GHz

I think you can use these CPUs.

Answer:Question about HDD-upgrade on a Satellite A10

Hey there,

I think you should try it, because I think that machine was shipped with a maximum of 80GB, but I am not sure. You have the following options:

1. Buy a HDD with about 120GB. Test it, you cannot damage anything. If the drive would not be recognized then bring it back to the shop and try a HDD with less memory (100GB). Repeat the procedure, if the drive was recognized, hold it. :)
2. Buy a 80GB HDD, which is known to work in that machine. Thats the "secure" way.
3. Do nothing and buy a external USB-HDD. ;)

I hope I could give you some thoughts on your way.

I am having a Toshiba Satellite A60 S-131 bought 2 years ago.
I want to know whether it is possible for me to upgrade the 40GB HDD to a higher capacity HDD(internal) and to upgrade my RAM from 512MB to higher.

Also I had already inserted a 256MB DDR RAM in the empty memory slot almost 1 year ago.

Help will be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite A60-131: Question about HDD and RAM upgrade

Hi Pranjal,

You can definitley upgrade your hard drive to a larger capacity version. You should find that an 80Gb or 100Gb will work just fine. You will need to make sure that you obtain a new drive with the same physical characteristics as you existing one. The following link will help you to remove the hard drive.

You may also wish to get a new hard drive with a faster rotational speed (5400rpm or even 7200rpm).

I believe the maximum RAM for the A60 is 1.25Gb which comprises 1 X fixed module (I presume yours is 256Mb which means that you can install one further module of up to 1Gb capacity. RAM modules are available in 256Mb, 512Mb, and 1Gb capacities.

Hi there people.

I have upgraded the memory on my gf's quite old a60 laptop, but want to upgrade the cpu as well now as she is running the celeron 2.8.
The laptop manual says i can have the followng cpu's:

Intel celeron up to 2.8ghz (which i currently have)
Mobile intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.06 ghz
Mobile intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.2 ghz supporting htt

other processors may be introduced and a level 2 cache from 128kb to 1mb

I am trying to work out whether this means i can have the northwood 130nm 3.2ghz or whether i can have the prescott 90nm 3.2ghz.

If I could have the prescott, would I not be able to get the 3.46 ghz prescott?
As these cpus are quite hard to find, i am just checking to see if i can have any of these..., also how easy is it to get in and change the chip inside the laptop :D

While I am asking, is it worth upgrading the hard drive from 40gb 4200 rpm to a 7200 rpm one?

Many thanks for your time people

Answer:Satellite A60 - CPU upgrade question

I wouldn't install a Prescott, they get very hot! The cooling fan may not be able to keep the CPU cool.

Installing a Northwood would be the best option. Looking in google, it appears this laptop can definitely accept Northwood CPU's.

The jump from a Celeron to a Northwood is a big step. But from Northwood to Prescott is only a small step.

I would choose this one:

As for the HDD, 7200RPM drives can get hot and are noisy, and are not that much faster than a 5400RPM drive. A 5400RPM HDD would be the smart choice.

I want to upgrade my notebook with a new CPU.
The (hardware) socket ist a 479. But when I ask Intel about my current CPU, it tells my that it is a 478.
The Chipset is an Intel 852/855 GM/GME, after Intel ChipsetUtility.

I am a little confused about the different data about the socket.
With CPUs will fit?

Answer:Satellite A10: CPU Upgrade question

I?m not sure about the CPU socket in the Satellite A10 but I use the tool called ?Everest home edition? and this tool provides all necessary information about the kind of socket and another important CPU info.

But as far as I know the Satellite A10 and Pro A10 was delivered with different hardware specifications and different CPU?s.
It seems the Intel Pentium 4-M and the Mobile Intel Celeron CPU are compatible:

Mobile Intel Pentium 4-M model
A 1.80/1.90/2.00/2.20GHz Pentium 4 processor with a 1.80/1.90/2.00/2.20/1.20GHz internal clock, 400MHz bus and 1.30/1.20V core operation
Mobile Intel Celeron model
A 1.80/2.00/2.20GHz Celeron processor with a 1.80/2.00/2.20GHz internal clock, 400MHz bus and 1.30V core operation

But I really don?t recommend the CPU upgrade.
As far as I know the microcode must be updated after the CPU and motherboard replacement. If you don?t update the microcode the CPU will run only at 600Mhz.

Be careful!

I have found out how easy it is to remove the current DVD Writer on my Satellite S70-A (10 seconds) so no problems there.

I see that there is a small lug at the back of the writer allowing the writer to be locked in place by the small bolt that holds the HDD/RAM cover in place

Can I buy a Blu Ray player which has this lug already fitted or I can I fit the lug afterwards?

Can anyone suggest a suitable Blu Ray player to buy as a direct replacement.

Answer:Question about Blu-ray upgrade on Satellite S70-A

Most of S70-A notebooks are offered with DVD-multi optical disc drives. Just few of them are offered with 9.5MM BD-ROM. Unfortunately I don't know which model of BD-ROM is this exactly.
It is not easy to find any information which model can be used on your machine.

I’m not 100% sure but it could be UJ162 UJ-162.

Let’s see if someone else can find exact info about that.

Anyway, in worst case you can order it and test it. if there is some problem simply send it back.

My Satellite A30-104 has recently come to the end of its warranty, and having had to open up the heatsink for cleaning and seeing that the CPU was accessible, I wonder if there is any (likely) scope for upgrading it.

The processor is a Celeron (Northwood) 2.6GHz. I'm not looking for more grunt, I'd prefer a lower-power chip, though the much larger L2 cache of a Pentium 4 is also desirable. I'd be very grateful if anyone could advise whether any upgrades are likely available, and if so which chips would be appropriate? If I can give any more useful spec information, please ask.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite A30-104?

Generally it?s not advisable to upgrade the CPU on the notebooks because nobody can say if the notebook will run properly and stable after the upgrade.
The heat and high temperature inside the notebook could be a serious problem.

Anyway, I think the notebook supports an Intel 852GME chipset.

The Intel 852GME chipset is optimized for the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor, features a 533 MHz system bus and up to 2 GB of high-speed DDR 333/266/200 memory.

But I?m not sure about the socket? it?s either 479 or 478

I want a bigger hard drive but xp home edition is pre installed. If i change the hdd i dont think the recovery disk would work to re install xp. How do i do this without buying a new version of windows? Oh it is a notebook satellite pro spa10.

Answer:Satellite Pro A10: Question about HDD upgrade

Sorry but why you suggest the Recovery CD will not recognize the new HDD?
Fact is if the BIOS will recognize the new HDD then you will not have any problems with recovering and the OS installation.

If you want to upgrade the HDD you have to use an compatible one. Then simply boot-up from the recovery CD and the OS will install on the new HD drive.

I would like to upgrade the standard HGST HDD to a faster Seagate SSHD, and the problem is that in this model L50-A-19N there is no HDD cover, the whole laptop bottom must be removed like in this Link: [Video|]

My question is can I upgrade the Disk by Myself and if not what can I do to replace the Disk not losing the warranty. I read the manual for this model and there is nothing about HDD upgrades there.

Answer:Satellite L50-A-19N HDD upgrade question

Usually on most notebook models HDD is placed at the bottom and access to it is not complicated. As you can see on your notebook model it is not so easy and HDD exchange is not supported. With other words it should not be done by notebook owner.

Valid warranty is very important so please don't do anything on your own. HDD exchange in your case can be done by authorized service provider. If they do this warranty will not be cancelled.

Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. Addresses and phone numbers you can find on

Good luck

I want to upgrade to i7

Answer:Satellite L505-138 - CPU upgrade question

> Is this possible?
Maybe, in case the new CPU would be supported by chipset and BIOS, you?ve got good chances to upgrade the CPU.
But Toshiba as well as other notebook manufacturers don?t support such upgrade and therefore everything you do is your own risk!

First of all I would recommend you to get details about your chipset. On Intel ARK page you could check what CPUs would be supported by this chipset.
Fact is that this notebook series were equipped with the Intel Dual Core CPUs belonging to the Intel Arrandale CPU family. In case you want really try an new CPU, I would suggest you to choose one from this family.

But note: even if chipset would support new CPU, the BIOS might be one of the parts causing troubles. Unfortunately I did not find any information what CPUs might be supported by BIOS

I have Toshiba Satellite L300-1A3.
Its performance good.
But the futre if i change cpu, how is supported Core2Duo series?

Thank you very much.

Answer:Satellite L300-1A3 - CPU upgrade question

The CPU upgrade is not supported by Toshiba and nearly all other notebook manufacturers.
Generally you should know that the notebooks components like CPU or GPU are not upgradeable.

In most cases the graphic card is soldered on motherboard. The CPU upgrade is more complicated and tricky because of different reasons.
The main reason would be the heat dissipation. The stronger CPU produces more warmness which can affect the notebook functionality.
In other case the CPU could be not supported by BIOS and in worst case the notebook would not boot up?.

So if you want to upgrade the computer components in the future with new CPU or better graphic chip then you shouldn?t buy a notebook but a desktop PC!

That?s my personal opinion

I wanted a laptop and my partner who is not real PC savvy(bless his heart) went out without my knowleadge and bought me a second hand laptop. Which I really appreciate his thoughtfulness.

I got a Toshiba Satellite Model Number PSA50A-7k047.
I know a little bit about PC's but not a lot I can change a hard drive and add memory and processor to a desktop but have little knowledge with laptops.

This one has a 40gb harddrive and 240 ram and I am guessing is a Pentium 4.

- What I would like to know is how old is this model and how much can I upgrade it.
- What is the maximum memory, hard drive and will it take a duo core processor.

I've never had a Toshiba before but I've heard they are really good and reliable.

Another question is I went into device manager then system devices, then system speakers I found out there was a driver that wasn't installed. 82801DBM LPC Interface Controller - 24CC

The reason I ask is I tried to plug in external speakers and they wouldn't work, I couldn't find a speaker port only mic and headphones. I thought this may be because the above driver wasn't installed. Would anyone know where I could find and download this driver.

Please when you answer remember I am 50 years old and 5 years ago I didn't even know how to bring up a browser, I have taught myself everything I know now..I have 2 blogs and do a lot of marketing, but I am not so good on the tech side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi pauline28
goo gle is your best friend... ;-)

i guess this one is about 4 or 5 years old...

i am only guessing but the limitation for ram upgrade should be 1024mb depending on the operating system and the chipset...
take a look at the manual (it can be downloaded at toshibas website)

all drivers for this notebook can be downloaded at toshiba too.

upgrading the hdd up to 120gb may work but there is no garanty, maybe you have to update the bios

upgrading the cpu is the silliest thing to do... why?
ok the cpu that is working in your laptop will be not cheap
a core-duo wont run in this socket/chipset... (not for sure)

but be sure this device will do all the things like surfing the internet ;-) not in water ;-)
play musik, if the driver is installed
and the harddrive with 40gb of space will be enough, if you dont put all your cds on it ;-)

it may be a good idea to pay a specialist for this 20min to check and install the correct drivers...

Hi all,

I am looking for some information on how to upgrade the RAM for my SATELLITE S3000-X4 (120MB RAM, 14GB HD I think!). Heres a little background...

This laptop is approx 5 years old, and I am hoping to speed it up a little. I dont not want to buy a new computer as it generally serves my needs.

I have cleared out my hard drive of unwanted programs and files. And I have run Jv16 Power Tools to clean the registry and minimise start up processes.

It is still a little slow and so I am considering upgrading the RAM as I believe I can do this for around ?50. My questions are:

What type of RAM upgrade should I look at buying? (Does this laptop have 2 RAM 'plug ins' or just one?)
What size of RAM upgrade is the maximum a S3000-X4 could cope with?
Could a novice like myself fit the upgrade DIY style?!

Thanks for any help you can offer!!

Hi Gabrielle

It is pretty old unit. I have searched some info but unfortunately I didn?t find much. The unit can use 512 MB of RAM and you can use two memory modules. I am not 100% sure but I think you can use module with follow part number PA3086U-1M25.

The unit is not known to me but please check bottom side. On most units there you can find memory cover.

Hello Thomas

Your notebook has an Intel Dual Core T3400 processor and 667Mhz FSB and 1MB cache only. And you are in Vista 32 bit. Your DDRII RAM is of 800 MHz. All this does not allow you to speed up your system.

If you want to upgrade to speed up your system, you need:
- Either change your processor by a more powerful dual-core (1066 MHz FSB as P300-20E eg with a 3MB cache).
- Or place your system on a 250 GB SSD drive (I recommend the Samsung 850 EVO 250 Gb), the migration of your HDD to the SSD software is included in the Samsung box). Modified the price is less than € 100.

I think for a beginner computer the most effective solution is the latter, especially since it is not easy to find a P8600 processor to replace your T3400.

Take the opportunity to buy a dry air bomb to remove the dust from the ventilation of your laptop.

Good luck and good Christmas holidays.

You have to use the DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM memory modules. Usually it?s no matter what RAM manufacture it is. It?s only important that you would use the right memory modules which support the right specifications.

By the way; you can also order the right memory module from the Toshiba ASP. Just contact the ASP technician and ask for the compatible parts.

Hi everyone,

after few years I decided to spend some money to upgrade the RAM.
Now, I am quite stuck to understand what to do.

I have always known that my notebook may be upgraded to 8GB.
I also have many references for this information:

- model: Satellite A300-1Q PSAGCE-07000QIT

I physically checked the slots: there are currently two slots of 2GB each.
As non-expert, I thought that the most logic way to upgrade such a configuration is to buy other two chips of 4GB each to reach the 8GB.

However, it seems that this combination is not feasible becasue I do not find it (I checked on Kingston and Amazon website). The RAM upgrade I would like to achieve is:
-800 Mhz

If this can be of help I jot down all the data on the other two RAM modules:
2GB 2Rx8 PC2-64005-666-12-Z3
800 Mhz DDR2-SDRAM

Can anybody help me to figure out what to do for upgrading the RAM to 8GB?

Many thanks,

Answer:Satellite A300-1QP - RAM upgrade question

The notebook was equipped with the Intel GM45 Express chipset and according to Intel ARK page this Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset is able to handle the 8GB RAM
The chipset seems to support the 667MHz / 800MHz / 1066MHz modules

If you want to upgrade the RAM up to 8GB RAM, the best option would be the usage of 2 x 4GB SO-DIMM (DDR2 800Mhz) modules
The present modules has to be removed and replaced with two 4GB modules.

Usually you can use different brand modules but cheap modules can cause many different and strange issue. Therefore I would recommend you to purchase good quality modules like Kingston, Toshiba, etc?

I have decided to upgrade my Satellite Pro 4600 from a 20 gig hard drive to a 60 gig.
I only get a blank screen.
When I refit my original 20 gig, it works ok.
Is there any special procedure for fitting larger drives?

Answer:Satellite Pro 4600: HDD upgrade question

Do the BIOS recognize the HDD correctly?

Possibly the HDD size is too large and therefore you?ve got some troubles with the notebook.

Fact is that not all HDD sizes are supported and the BIOS does not recognize all HDDs if the size is too large. Therefore you should try an smaller HDD?

What are the limits to upgrade my Satellite P10 Notebook? Currently I use 1GB RAM (2x512) and I still have the original 60GB 4200/min HDD. Mainly I'm interested in upgrading my harddrive to get at least one 100GB 7200/min drive. Best would be one of the 24h server ones like the Hitachi HTE721010G9AT00, as I hardly power off my computer. Which one to take and are there any limits (BIOS) (keeping in mind that there will be 200 and even 250GB drives next year)?

About the RAM: Should I put two 200pin SO-DIMM in 333 or 533 or shouldn't I change at all as it works fine and stabil now?

Answer:Satellite P10: Question about RAM and HDD upgrade limits

you have to use DDR SODIMM memory with 333MHz.
But I don't know the max capacity of HDD that will work.

Sorry for the beginner question. But if I have 512MB memory at the moment, what are my upgrade options?

Do I have to buy pairs of memory? So I can either buy 2x 1GB=2GB, or 2x 512MB = 1GB + 512 existing. Or can I say just buy a single 512MB or 1GB chip?

Answer:Question about memory upgrade for my Satellite M40-307

Since nobody wants to answer:
1. Check if your notebook supports Dual Channel Ram (it should, but just ckeck in the manual to be sure)
2. Find out what kind of RAM you have. This will add or remove a possibility to upgrade

The thing with Dual Channel is, that you have the best performance, if you using 2 RAM of the same type (really same type: company, size..)
you could:
3a. Add a 512MB RAM of the same type which you have
3b. Buy 2 pieces of new RAM of the same type (1GB + 1GB, or 2GB + 2GB) and be sure that your Notebook supports this ammount (again: manual to check)

You can find also in the manual, if your notebook is supporting DDR or even DDR2 RAM (faster)

If you lost your manual, you can download it here on the toshiba webpage

I hope I could help a bit.

I have 2Gb of RAM
Can I install 4Gb of RAM (because I try 2x2Gb, 800MHz) and don?t working.

Do I need only 667 MHz or my laptop supports only 2Gb?

Answer:Question about RAM upgrade on Satellite A200-1CR

Your notebook can be upgraded up to 2 GB only and for upgrade you must use compatible 667 MHz modules.
For successfully upgrade I recommend you 2 X 1 GB DDR2-667 with part number PA3512U-1M1G.

I upgraded the ram last year and im running at top capacity for my model, 2.0gb.

This really helped for a while, but after a couple of heavy programmes were installed this year (one software, one game) ive noticed it running as slow as before, its worth noting that my computer passed all the spec needed for both apart from the game where im running on 1.7ghz and it needs at the very least 2.0ghz from the processor, and i am running on the slowest peformance speed from the game itself.

It currently has a pentium centrino, bearing in mind a new laptop is not in my budget, is it worth getting a new processor and which would be best?

Thanks again, Rebekah.

Answer:Satellite Pro L20-PSL25E - CPU upgrade question

My personal opinion is that Satellite L20 is not designed for heavy operations and it is definitely not gaming machine. If you compare price for Satellite A and Satellite L notebooks you will understand why. I am pretty sure this notebook is designed for Internet, Office and all simple ?every day? activities.

RAM upgrade is very good and I am sure it helps a lot but CPU upgrade is not the solution. CPU upgrade is not supported. You must also understand that every hardware platform is designed for optimal hardware activity. CPU, graphics, cooling system and other hardware components must work harmonic and without overheating. Stronger CPU means more heat.

In my opinion you should optimize preinstalled operating system in hope software you use will runs better and more stabile.

I am the proud owner of a Toshiba Satellite A110-153 that I've had for a couple of years.
I'm interested in upgrading RAM but came across this controversy.

1. Internal Memory expansion module sizes are 256, 512, 1024 MB.
2. Maximum Internal Memory is 4Gb
3. 2 Memory Slots.

Now I'd like to upgrade my laptop to the maximum 4Gb RAM, but how can I do this when I'm not allowed to use 2x 2Gb modules?

Is it humanely possible to upgrade my laptop to 4Gb?

Thanks for time.

Answer:Satellite A110-153: RAM upgrade question

If you want to upgrade the RAM to max 4GB then you have to use 2 x 2GB RAM modules!

The notebook should handle the DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM modules

But note; the 4GB RAM can be used only by 64bit OS!!!
Win XP or Vista 32bit would recognize only 3.2GB!!!

Will the RAM be downrated to a slower speed in the Toshiba or will the 880 work fine?

Thanks for your time.

Sorry but I don?t know what you mean by 880?. Do you mean the DDR2 880Mhz module???

There are different Satellite P200 models but generally you could use the DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM memory modules

The compatible module is running at 667Mhz!

Hi, there

The minimum recommended memory for Windwows XP is 256 Mb and I do not understand how the company could get away selling notebook with 256 MB with built-in graphic adapter sharing the system memory.

Anyway, I want to upgrade my Toshiba and my intention is to buy additional 512 Mb memory, such as

Will it work properly with 768 Mb or shall I buy only the same pairs : 256+ 256, 512+ 512?

Thank you very much.

Answer:Question about memory upgrade on Satellite L20-181

Firstly you are not right. The Windows XP runs also with the lower memory value.
But of course, it depends on the memory if the OS applications will run faster or slower.

However, the fact is that you can upgrade the memory on you notebook and it doesn?t mater if the modules have the same memory value or not.
In this case the notebook was delivered with 256MB and you can install easeful the second 512MB memory module.

PS: I would recommend installing the 512MB in the first slot and the 256MB in the second bank.

PA3513U-1M2G(DDR2-667 2GB Memory Kit)

DDR2-533 256MB (PA3389U-2M25)
DDR2-533 512MB (PA3412U-2M51)
DDR2-533 1GB (PA3411U-2M1G)

The max memory that you can use on this unit is 4GB.

If I upgrade my Satellite A40 processor to hyper threading technology to 3.00Ghz, the problem s does not pass my chipset to hypo threading, should I have a problem to my notebook conditions?.......

Answer:Satellite A40 - question about processor upgrade

If you open your notebook and make something on your own you will lose your warranty.

Just for info; the processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturisation and heat dissipation. As far as I know because of this connection method the CPU upgrade is not possible.

Good luck!

I'm thinking of upgrading to Vista but some things are confusing me. I have a Satellite P15 with an OEM XP Home package installed. Am I fine to buy another OEM DVD of Vista to use to upgrade or will this cause some sort of conflict with the hidden recovery partition etc.

I understand either way that if I choose to upgrade and want to completely install Vista from new I will have to reformat my hard drive? That's a tough call. Is there any way to simply upgrade to Vista but keep everything I have already installed at all? I have tonnes of useful stuff and tonnes of rubbish which I'm equally not keen to lose and don't fancy spending hours backing it all up, equally I don't want to have dual boot to be honest. It's either Vista or XP, not both for me.

Any ideas?

I guess my biggest concern is OEM compatibility with another OEM package and whether the P15 will allow it at all.

Answer:Question about Vista upgrade on Satellite P15

To be honest, you're probably not going to get a decent reply, unless it's from someone who's also tried to do something similar. Pretty much, Vista has an upgrade feature, but it follows similar series (WXP Home - Vista premium, WXP Pro - Vista ultimate, and variation in between).

I personally setup a dual boot to test Vista, and enjoyed it, but I keep my WXP just in case. An upgrade install, even if you go for it, will be messy. To get the most out of Vista, and to have a clean nice slate, I'd definitely go for a fresh install. I know, backing stuff up, a pain, dual boot, a pain, but in reality, people are probably going to say 'deal with it, no whining' or try an upgrade install which could cause much more head aches than it's worth.

You could also put everything you want into a folder on your C: and then after you do a fresh install (you don't HAVE to format on a fresh install, you can install OVER a previous OS) you can delete whatever is left of the old OS that you don't need. In all honesty, there's no 'Care free' 'easy' way to install a new operating system, it took me about 8 hours to configure everything and install all my programs to how I like in vista, and that already knowing where most of the commands are and more or less knowing what I'm doing. So, put a weekend aside, and get through it, or just avoid it and stay with WXP.

my satellite 1110-z14 has an intel mobile celeron @ 1,5 ghz. The cpu is based on p4 architecture - it should be a northwood-256.
Is there any chance to upgrade the cpu?

The 1110-z20 is powered by the mobile celeron @ 2,0 ghz - all other technical specs except the harddisc are the same... (ati radeon mob m6 with 16mb, usb 1.1 and so on...).

What do you think, can i upgrade the cpu?
Which cpu's can i use?

Answer:Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite 1110-Z14

As far as I know the 1110 series computer is equipped with an Intel 845MZ system controller.
I found on the Intel page some details about the Intel 845MZ chip set. It should handle the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor - M with 400 MHz FSB
On the Intel page you can find the whole CPU family.

But generally the CPU replacement and upgrade is not advisable and nobody can say if the OS will run stable after such upgrade? Therefore be careful.

can anyone reassure me I am buying the correct, and best RAM for my 2 Satellites. One is the P100-423.
The other is Satellite Pro P100.

1) Can I use PC2 5300 DDR2 SO DIMM 200 pin modules - 667 Mhz in both machines.
I want to buy 4x 1 GB chips (all the same), so both PC's will have 2 Gig ram.

2) I have seen the above chips with 533 Mhz, but I have been told I can use this or the 667 Mhz. Is this correct?
667 Mhz would be faster and preferable would it not?

3) Some chips also are designated PC2 - 4200 - rather than PC2-5300. Again, can I use either?

4) Finally, I always thought it was best to fit 2 ram chips of the same size -which is why I want to use 2x 1 GB chips.
Yet I have been recommended to fit 1 x 1GB and 1x 2 GB in each pc.
I know a total of 4 Gig is theoretical ie only 3.25Gb is possible.
But will the unbalanced formation offer much greater performance over the balance 2x 1GB formation. ?

Many thanks for any advice offered

Answer:Question about RAM upgrade on Satellite P100-423

Using slower RAM is possible. I have a other notebook at work with 4200 iso 5300. It runs ok.

However using the exact speed is better because this gives the best performance. The timing of your system is tuned to these memories.

Nevertheless slower modules but more RAM will still give you an improved performance.

3G seems to be the max for Vista-32. The unbalance is of course not optimal but still I expect the performance is better then with 2GB.

Answer:Question about RAM upgrade on Satellite U400-138

In my opinion you should follow Toshiba and not Intel specification. Toshiba?s info is based on own tests and facts.
So, following Toshiba specification for GM45 Chipset there is clearly written:

Min(on board)/Max Capacity - DDR2 800MHz 0MB/8GB max
Type of Expansion Memory - DDR2 800MHz 1GB/2GB/4GB
Module type - SO-DIMM

So if Toshiba write about 800 MHz modules you should use them and not faster modules.
You can maybe use faster too but they will not work with maximum speed but will goes down to 800 MHz only.

If you want to use max RAM amount use recommended and tested 2 x 2GB DDR2-800 (PA3669U-1M2G).
As compatible RAM it is listed 4GB DDR2-800 (PA3670U-1M4G).

I think the notebooks BIOS should recognize the new HDD.
The new HDD is a SATA HDD and this is most important thing.

You need a SATA 2.5? HDD!
The size and the speed are not really important because the new SATA controller should handle such HDD trouble free.

I have the Satellite L40-16D PSL48-E and i want to know which is the fastest cpu that i can put on?

In the top right corner i have a dummy card. What i can put on this socket?

Answer:Satellite L40-16D: CPU upgrade & PC card question

Don?t think that you could upgrade the notebook with an faster CPU because of the overheating issues. A faster CPU produces more heat and this leads to the overheating.
But as far as I know the 1.46GHz Dual-Core CPU T2310 was installed in this notebook.
Theoretically another Dual-Core CPU could be inserted but practically it?s not advisable and in most case the notebook wouldn?t run stable.
Last but not least you would lose the warranty!

Regarding the card slot question;
Well, some websites said that this notebook handles the Express Card. Therefore it?s a ExpressCard slot ;)

So what is the maximum amount of RAM my comp can take? I would like to have more than 2GB in order to make my paging file smaller. Is 2GB the maximum I can put in?

Your machine should be able to take 4 GB of RAM (but read first this article about the 4GB limit on 32Bit systems -> ) but I would suggest you to upgrade only to 2GB since you won?t recognize personally more than 2GB when you?re working with your machine.

So, if you want you can also upgrade to 4GB but only 3GB would be available for work (4GB limit !! ).

As you can see on bottom side of the notebook it doesn?t support a second HDD because there is no second HDD bay on bottom side.
The adapter that you posted is not an official one so nobody can say if it?s compatible part or not. As far as I know for Satellite notebooks there is no CD/DVD bay adapter but you can ask an authorized service provider for further details.

The maximum RAM capacity is depending on your exact notebook model. L500D was delivered with different hardware so you must post your exact notebook model number.

I have a Satellite P100-160 which currently has a 120GB hard drive it is not enough! y=50540&NavigationKey=40970000&CategorySelectedId= 11154&PageMode=1

Answer:Satellite P100-160: Question about HDD upgrade

I downloaded the user manual for this notebook from the Toshiba page and it says that you can use the 160GB HDD.
I think it wouldn?t be a problem to use a bigger HDD like 200GB or 250GB.

The Sat P100 supports an SATA HDD controller and therefore you should use the SATA 2.5? HDD.

I am looking into upgrading my HDD which with the P100-286 is the Fujitsu MHV2200BT. I wish to find an HDD with a faster RPM and maybe a slightly greater capacity too.

I have found information on the MHV2200BT and see that it has a slightly larger casing than most notebook 2.5" HDD. Its is 12.5mm in height rather than the usual 9.5mm.

Will this make it unsuitable to purchase another HDD?
Will I need to find another housing or casing for the HDD?

Here is the stats on the current model...

I am thinking about getting this HDD to replace it .....

Thanks for any further information.

Answer:Satellite P100-286 - HDD upgrade question

Hmm? the old HDD is 12.5mm and the new is 9.5mmm
Well buddy? I don?t exactly how the HDD has been mounted in the P100 but in many cases the HDD is placed in the holder (bracket).

So the new HDD would not blend with this bracket.

But why you don?t take a 12.5mm HDD? There are a lot 2.5?, 12.5mm, SATA HDDs which would be 100% compatible with your notebook!

Hi to all.....
I would like to ask something.....

I have toshiba Satellite A200-1cr with 120GB HDD.....

I would like to change my HDD. I 've found a hard drive 2.5" with 250GB.

My questions are the following:

1) My knowledge of desktops are very very good. Is it easy to change it on my own?
I guess it is but i want to be sure.. I suppose it gets IDE on it, right?? No SATA at all?

2) If i changed it am i losing my guarantee?

3) Can i give my notebook in a Toshiba official shop in greece and let them do the change?
Can i take it in an unofficial shop, too??

4) Can i put on the notebook 2x 250GB such us new toshiba laptops?
Is there enough space in the notebook for such a change?

thank you in advance.......

Answer:Satellite A200-1CR: Question about HDD upgrade

Hi buddy

It?s good that you ask this.

1) The Satellite A200-1CR supports SATA and not IDE interface and therefore you would need a SATA HDD. It?s really not difficult to replace the HDD and as far as I know you should find some details in the user manual. There is a useful instruction and pictures which explain the whole procedure.

2) Hm? as far as I know the HDD replacement does not cancel the warranty and has no affect on the warranty state.

3) You can also contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country for a HDD replacement but in my opinion this is really not necessary because the replacement is not very tricky. As I said above, check the user manual.

4) I don?t think that your notebook would support 2 x 250GB HDD.
Of course, there are some other notebook series which are abele to support two HDDs but I don?t think that your A200 notebook support it.

Just a little comment about the new HDD:
Fact is that some bigger HDD are not supported by BIOS. I mean a upgrade from 120GB to 250GB HDD is really a big step an possibly your BIOS would not recognize the HDD correctly.
Therefore I would recommend testing the HDD firstly before buying.

Hi, new to this forum.
I tried to find a direct contact to ask this, but could not locate any email options on the website, only phone numbers, which aren't an option right now as I have other obligations during business hours at the moment.

I'm a computer technician of 30 years and have today purchased a new Satellite Pro R50-C PS566A-004001 with an i7-5500U, 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD Notebook for a customer of mine. He has requested an additional 8GB of RAM, which I purchased at the same time from my wholesaler. On opening the box I discovered there is no access to the memory slots or the Hard Drive. The Toshiba Website states in the specs that the RAM is expandable to 16GB, but it appears the back cover has to be fully removed to gain access. I would like to check if I remove the back cover will this void the warranty. The specifications on the Toshiba website do not state that it is not user accessible to change the RAM, where as from the research I did for the customer, other cheaper models do state this. I have sold Toshiba and other brands Notebooks in the past and have always ensured that the specifications for the laptop did not say the RAM was non user accessible, and as such that I would be able to upgrade the RAM as customers request.

As above, I just wish to check that upgrading the RAM on this laptop will not void the Toshiba warranty, since the specifications do state that the laptop is expandable to 16GB of RAM, and do not state that it is not user accessible/u... Read more

I would like to upgrade my laptop (p100-240), where could i find 2gb of ram for this from at 667mhz + can you add another HD and run a raid setup?

Answer:Satellite P100-240: Question about RAM and HDD upgrade

You can buy you're RAM in any other shop, it just should be compatible with you're RAM, check that out on the toshiba main homepage, or order the RAM over the Toshiba homepage (options).
You can't ad another HD but you can buy an external HD with USB 2.0 or FIRE WIRE (FIRE WIRE recommended because of higher speed).

Hi everyone

I have an A120-107 that I'm generally pleased with but the hard drive is far too small and I'm thinking of upgrading to around 100GB. What do I need to look for when buying? Any suggestions on the best drive to get? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Answer:Satellite Pro A120-107: Question about HDD upgrade

Hi there,

you just have to take care, that you purchase a Sata drive in the "Form Factor" 2.5". Thats everything.
Like I know, the biggest drive wich was shipped with this machine was a 120GB SATA drive.

Regarding the manufacturer: Feel free to take every manufacturer which you like. The best would be Toshiba at all ;)

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-803 laptop at the moment. There is an Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 cpu in it and it is a bit slow. It also doesn't support VT-x extensions.

My idea is to build a simple hobby-server which should run Gentoo with Xen on it. I can buy an Intel Core 2 Duo T7600, but there are two things I would like to know.

1. Does the bios support the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600?
2. If it does support the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600, is there any way to use the VT-x extensions?

Answer:Re: Satellite A100-803 - CPU Upgrade question

>1. Does the bios support the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600?
This is not known to me but you should check if the chipset would support the the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600. If the chipset does not support this CPU then you cannot use this CPU in your A100. but if the chipset would support the new CPU then you?ve good chances to use this part.

>2. If it does support the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600, is there any way to use the VT-x extensions?
Hmm? this is a good question; as far as I know the BIOS needs to support the VT-x feature in order to use this? of course the CPU should support this too? so I think that the VT-x should be available if the upgrade to Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 would be successful?

Hello everybody!
Can I upgrade bios on my notebook, from Bios v.2-20 to v.5-10?

In instructions, it is written:
This Bios is only compatible for Notebooks with Windows XP!!!
And this Bios is only for models with Modelnumber PSL48x, PSL49x, PSL4Bx or PSL4Cx

Two reasons:
1. I use XP operational system.
2. I have the laptop of series L4*

Answer:Question about Bios upgrade on Satellite L40

I think the BIOS description says everything;
Bios is only for models with Model number PSL48x, PSL49x, PSL4Bx or PSL4Cx

This means that if your notebook *does not* belong to one of these series number then you cannot use the BIOS!
The wrong BIOS can damage the motherboards ROM module!

Hello, i'm from greece and i'm new here, i know im newbe..

I have toshiba Satellite A200-23q (motherboard: intel gm965, cpu: t5550 (1,8ghz) )...

Resently i bought Intel T7500 (2,2ghz)..
Can i upgrade this laptop with this cpu?? What bios can i updated it to?

Sorry for my language mistakes...

Answer:Satellite A200-23Q - Cpu upgrade question

Usually the CPU upgrade is not advisable.
First of all the BIOS which was developed for this unit, has not been tested with different CPUs and in worst case the BIOS will not be compatible with the new CPU.

The Chipset should support this CPU;

Chapter 1.1.1 Processor Support:
The chipset supports the Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile processors 533Mhz and 800Mhz FSB support.

The Intel? Core?2 Duo Processor T7500 supports 800 MHz FSB so it should be supprted by chipset.

But once again; there are other reasons why the CPU upgrade should not be done;
The BIOS is one reason.
The second reason is the higher heat dissipation which would be created by stronger CPU? this could affect the notebook functionality as well.

1- I have a Ram with Buss 533 512 MB DDR2, if i changed it to Buss 667 2 GB Ram does it downgrade to 533 buss & works fine & not cuz troubles & be stable in my laptop or not?

2- what's the maximum Ram Sizes & Busses that can my laptop deal with it ?

plz replay quickly cuz i have problems in Rams upgrades thx

Message was edited by: Matrix Lover

Answer:Satellite A110-195 Ram upgrade question

What does the user manual say about the RAM upgrade?
Usually such info is always mentioned in user manuals?

But generally you have to know that RAM upgrade depends on the chipset.
The chipset FSB (front side buss) is important for RAM speed.
If the FSB supports only 533Mhz then your RAM modules would run max with 533Mhz speed even than the RAM modules would support a faster speed; ie 667Mhz.

i have a Toshiba Satelite A100-200 i want to upgrade to 4 gb.
I'm thinking of installing 2x 2GB kingston kvr667d2s5/2g 667mhz pc 5300 ddr2.

Every time i do a check on websites it tells me to install PC24200 ddr2 533.
Will the above work the same as the 4200 ddr2 533hz as the ones i want to put in are a lot cheaper.

Will both sets of ram pergorm exactly the same as long as they are paired.

Answer:Satellite A100-200 RAM upgrade question

Everything depends on your FSB (front side bus).
If the FSB supports 667Mhz then the inserted PC5300 667Mhz modules will run with full performance (667Mhz).

But if the FSB supports only 533Mhz then the RAM modules will run only at 533Mhz even you would use the faster modules (PC5300)

So what you should do is to check the FSB value. You can install a hardware diagnostic tool (i.e Everest home edition) in order to check the FSB.

I think this is a generic UEFI / Win 8.1 question (not dependent on model).

However, FWIW I have a Satellite P70-A01D (bought localy here in Australia).

This is a 17.3 inch Gen4 i7 4700MQ ? Intel HM86 ? 16GB RAM ? Win 8.0 64-bit.

I have updated the OS to Win 8.1

This P70 comes with an empty HDD bay #2 - so I have purchased a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD which I wish to use as the primary Win 8.1 boot/system drive.

I installed this SSD into #2 bay and from there I had no trouble in using the Samsun Magician cloning software that came with the SSD (V 4.0 DC) to clone my 1TB system over on to the SSD.

There are lots of instructions from Samsun and all over the web as to how to clone and 'substitute' an HDD with an SSD - however there is much less available when it comes to 'adding' the SSD - in bay #2 - whilst still keeping the original HDD fully functioning as an extra drive.

After running the cloning software I tried just going into the UEFI settings on restart and changing the order of the boot drive ? placing the SSD above the HDD.

This worked ? however there were obviously issues still as I hadn't renamed the drives ? so SSD was running as system but it was mounting as D: and HDD was still C: and most system/application paths were still set to access C: !

It led to crash and reboot cycles of the desktop (?? &/or explorer.exe ???) and two consistent... Read more

Answer:Satellite P70-A01D: changing drive letters after upgrade of 2nd SSD drive

I think you could try to change the drives letter as suggested in the Microsoft article.
In case this will not be possible, try to use a 3rd party software for example like GParted.

You could boot up the unit using the live USB version and could try to change the drive letters.
But it could be possible that your system would not boot up properly after such change.

Therefore you should not forget to mark the partition as bootable.

Feedback would be appreciated

The P300 series is new and supports a powerful CPU. You will not notice any performance boost after the CPU upgrade.

For this check this Toshiba article

This should be possible. In most cases you can find the info in user manual.
I think 4GB should be possible

Do you want to use infrared interface? In such case I recommend USB Irda stick.
It?s easy to use and to install.

Good Afternoon

Am I correct in assuming that the August 2007 upgrade for my Satellite A30 is to enable it to work with MS Vista? There is no documentation with the bios download, but the bios description states " provides added functionality"

Can anyone describe what this added functionality provides and is it really worth upgrading a 3 year old machine? I use XP on it

Kind regards

Dave Smith

I am pretty sure that old Satellite A30 is not Vista supported. Unfortunately there is no public document about BIOS update and exact list what this update is good for. One thing I can say for sure: if your OS runs well and stabile let it go and enjoy WXP.

I have a question about my notebook. I notticed there's a second HDD slot on the bottom.
Is it possible to use this to expand my storage?
And if so, how do I do that? I didn't see any connectors.
What kind of HDD should I use in case it's possible to use this slot?

My second question is about my notebook getting very hot after short period of usage.
I installed speedfan to log the temperature. When I start up the notebook it's already between 45 and 50 degrees.
It stays there for an half hour and then it starts getting hotter. When I start using the notebook for no matter what, it raises to between 70 and 80 degrees.

This doesn't seem normal to me. I tried cleaning the vents with compressed air but it didn't make a difference.
I searched the internet how to take the notebook apart to get it cleaned proparly.
But I don't want to destroy it so I didn't try that.

What could be causing this and more important, how can I solve this?

Answer:Satellite A350D-20K - Question about second HDD upgrade + temperature

Does the second HDD bay contains the HDD connectors?
If yes, then you can use a 2.5? SATA HDD.
If there are no connectors then you will not be able to use second HDD

>I installed speedfan to log the temperature. When I start up the notebook it's already between 45 and 50 degrees. It stays there for an half hour and then it starts getting hotter. When I start using the notebook for no matter what, it raises to between 70 and 80 degrees.

CPU and GPU produce a lot of warmness. The heat dissipation is always created so it?s nothing unusual that temperature increased to higher level.
You can modify the Win 7 power management settings. You can set the CPU to lower performance and can increase the fan activity? this will help to decrease the temp.

From most of the A10 models I have seen the video card is built onto the motherboard. Meaning it can not really be upgraded without changing the entire motherboard. The ram is an easy upgrade. Your best bet is to purchase RAM from Toshiba so as not to use one that is not compatible with your computer. This 512MB SO DIMM should be compatible with your computer P000331680. Have a nice day.

Thanks for anyones help.

Answer:Satellite P100-429: Question about processor upgrade

The CPU upgrade is a little bit tricky on the notebooks and in most cases not advisable and not possible.
After the CPU upgrade it could be possible that the cooling modules don?t run properly and the notebook will overheats.
Why? Well, the new and stronger CPU produce more warmness and the temp would goes up. The fan table stored in the BIOS will not match with the new CPU and the cooling fans would work not correctly.
Furthermore the CPU upgrade will cancel your warranty! This is very risky!!!

Anyway, it looks like you want definitely upgrade the CPU??
So I would check the chipset installed on your notebook.
Try to find out the details of the chipset and search on the Intel page for the compatible CPUs!!!

It?s clear -> modules seems to be not compatible ;)

> However when the original 512Mb sodimm is put back into one of the slots - it doesn't matter which - either of the kvr etc sodimms work giving a total of 1.5Gb of ram.

Cannot believe that! As far as I know this notebook was delivered only with one 512MB DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) 200-PIN SODIMM module.
Of course you can upgrade the memory up to 2GB using two 1024MB modules.

The compatible memory can you find here:

> Also is it poss. to upgrade cpu ie is cpu socketed. I've already upgraded many a laptop cpu when they had socketed cpus, so I'm aware of the problems involved
Well, what to say, the CPU is socked? you can find out it easily using an hardware diagnostic program like ?Everest?. It would provide many useful information about your notebooks hardware.

But to be honest, I?m very skeptical about CPU upgrade on the notebooks.
If you have already changed several CPUs on the notebooks then you should know that this is not very easy and more tricky like the CPU upgrade on the desktop PCs.

Hi there

I have a toshiba satelite pro 6100 and it currently has the 1.60 bios version and have seen that the latest bios update is the 1.90. My question is: Does it matter where i get the bios update from wheather it is from the UK toshiba website or the US, is it the same bios update or are they different? The other question is do i need to do the previous bios updates first, like from 1.60 to 1.70 then to 1.80 and finally to 1.90, or can i just do the 1.90 and that will have the previous updates in that latest one?

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100 BIOS upgrade question

Hi Christian,

I normally prefer to obtain the BIOS update from the same country as I purchased the notebook. However, given that the notebook was probably manufactured elsewhere in the world I don't think it really matters as long as the update is marked as compatible with your make/model of notebook. In principle, the BIOS update relates to the component parts of the notebook and is therefore more related to the actual model than its country of origin.

It is not normally necessary to load intervening BIOS versions since the BIOS is generally not cumulative but is supplied as a complete package and includes all of the requisite code.

Answer:Satellite L100-L170 - question about CPU upgrade

The L100 was delivered with the Intel-Celeron-M (Dothan) 360 1.4GHz FSB 400 CPU. Am I right?!

You should check the available chipset! I think it?s a Intel 945PM but I?m not 100% sure.
On the Intel page you should find the chipset specifications and could find out what CPU?s does the chipset supports.

The socket specs are very important! A CPU with wrong socket cannot be installed on the board! But in my knowledge the motherboard of the l100 supports the socket 478.

Anyway, the CPU upgrade is not easy, very risky and NOT advisable. Firstly you will lose your warranty and secondly the notebook could run not stable because of the overheating!

Forget this? don?t recommend installing Win XP 64bit.
Why? Because the Win XP 64bit was not so popular like Win 32bit or Vista/Win 7 64bit and you will not find many drivers for Win XP 64bit.
Either you will stay with XP 32bit or you could change to Win 7 64bit.

Regarding the graphic issue;
Did you notice this also using the old CPU (Intel Celeron M Processor 410)??
If this was not the case, then I would assume that this could be a issue between the CPU and BIOS.
Otherwise I recommend graphic card driver update.

Hoping someone out there may be able to offer some advice.
I'm now finding I probably need to upgrade this system a little. Adding memory looks straight forward but was also interested in upgrading the graphics card. Does anyone know if this is possible? Currently it has the ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 with 64MB of memory. If it is not possible to change the card is it possible instead to increase the memory on the card itself?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any advice to offer!

Answer:Graphics card upgrade question on the Satellite P10-802

No, something like that is definitely not possible.
Please do not mix the notebook technology with the ?simple? desktop PC.
You cannot upgrade the notebook graphic card and you cannot increase this graphic card memory.
Nothing to do :(

I have a Satelite S3000-X11 that I have upgraded to 512mb of RAM (2x256mb modules) plus an Hitachi 80gb 5,400rpm HD.
It is running very nicely but it does occasionally run out of physical memory. According to the Toshiba spec. for this machine, it should take 1024mb of memory, but everywhere else I look (including Crucial) says that 512mb is the max.
I have found some 512mb modules of the right type, but will they work?

Answer:Satellite 3000-X11: Memory upgrade question

The Satellite 3000-X11 has an 830MG (ICH-3) chipset included. The maximum memory supported by this machine (and chipset) is 2 x 512MB.

Hi everyone

I've upgraded my Vista Home Premium to WIndows 7 via the Toshiba Upgrade DVD's. I was just wondering, has anyone tried a clean install of Windows 7?

My reason being, I would like to do an install and have no traces of my Vista instal, plus would like to give 64bit a try. I've downloaded every drvier for Windows 7 32&64bit from the Toshiba Download section already. Is there any particular order these need doing after Windows 7 has installed?

Many thanks in advance.

Maybe something like this is possible but you must know that clean preinstalled OS will not be activated and you must pay for it.
Make a risk and test it.

I wanted to ask, how can I upgrade to Vista 64bit without loosing all the software I got packed with my Toshiba Satellite A300-1EG laptop?
Would I miss the Toshiba disc creator and so on?
Is there a way to extract them somehow from the recovery DVD?

Answer:Question about 64-bit Vista upgrade - Satellite A300-1EG

Please don't mix two different things. 32-bit and 64-bit versions are not the same and if your notebook is supported for 64-bit Vista version you can find all drivers, tools and utilities on Toshiba download page under

Have you already checked this?

BTW: recovery image cannot be used for single parts. It can be used as package only.

I upgraded my memory form 2Gb (2x1 Gb) to 4Gb (2x2 Gb) with two Kingston memory modules KVR667D2S5/2G (PC2-5300 CL5).
For two weeks there were no problems but then I got blue screen every time when system boots reffering to I guss memory error.
I tried to replace memory with original Toshiba's modules but blue screen remains. I have conctacted the service and they say that
it may be memory incompatibility, virus or hard disk malfunction.
After few days of working on the solution I reinstal my laptop with Toshiba DVD and replace original memory. Now everything works fine.

I wonder is Kingston memory cause of my problem or somethig else?
Does anyone know is Kingston memory KVR667D2S5/2G 2Gb compatibile with Toshiba?

Honestly, the Kingston offers high quality products and, I believe, you are the first one who complains about Kingston RAMs.
If you visit Kingston webpage you can find list of compatible RAMs. Is your module listed there?
