Preferred Solution: Vista on Satellite A100 - Unknown device listed in device manager

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Vista on Satellite A100 - Unknown device listed in device manager

Hi there,

may I ask you which drivers you?ve downloaded? And regarding the new founded hardware: Did you checked your device manager for that device?
What is standing there as the non-installed device? Mass-storage or multimedia? Please be more precisely with your explanation and don?t forget the drivers to list.

1. The original drive is not working. Upon inserting a disk the drive's light does shine and it does spin - but nothing further.
A little investigation shows no optical drive listed in the BIOS or Device Manager (naturally).

2. Perhaps I'd like to reinsert the drive, but I can't find any instructions on the internet about removing/replacing this drive.
Neither in the owner's manual.

Can someone steer me to these instructions?

Many thanks

Answer:Satellite A100 CD/DVD drive is not listed in BIOS or device manager

?Owner?s manual? is not the same as maintenance manuals. Please note that this is not the same and exact description about notebook disassembling procedure is for authorized service only.

Anyway, as far as I know the optical disc drive is fixed with one screw and it can be removed from the bottom side. The screw is placed near the memory cover exact over the optical drive. Not on the side of cooling vent but on the other side.

Be careful because all you do is on your own risk.

Hi can anyone tell me whats wrong with this laptop?

The problem is im using my DVD-ROM drive and it stops working. I went into the device manger and it wasnt there and it wasnt in my list of drives. I went in and checked the BIOS its not listed there either and the BIOS wont pick it up all I get is check cable or conection.

Would be grateful if some knows whats happened or if my drive is past it.

Answer:Satellite Pro A100 - CD/DVD drive is not listed in device manager and BIOS

If the CD/DVD drive is not listed in device manager and BIOS it seems to be faulty and must be replaced.
What do you think about this?

You can exchange the drive yourself. Check the user manual for a compatible CD/DVD drive or you go to an authorized service provider. The technicians can order a new drive and exchange it.

Sorry but if the drive is not listed in BIOS it seems to be faulty.

Hi All

Just installed vista on my A100-237.. after doing the BIOS upgrade and installing the Value Pack "unknown Device" with the location "on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System" appeared in my device manager, any ideas on how to sort this out??

Thanks in Advance!

Could you please check if you can see the "Batteries" entry under "Computer? in the device manager?
As far as I know the batteries entry should have a "Microsoft SMART Battery" & "Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem?.

If there is an unknown device this could have something to do with Microsoft ACPI Compliant Embedded Controller.
In such case it seems you need a driver for MS SMART Battery & MS SMART Battery Subsystem.

Hi everybody,

I've got a A100-926, in device management it show me that there's an unknown pci device at bus 7; function 3, but there's no way to know what is it and how I can install it because if I push reinstall driver it can't find the right one onto the toshiba tool cd.

I don't know if it's related to this but in some application the button delete must me pushed for more than a second to work :-(
Is there anyone that can help me?

Answer:Satellite A100-926: unknown device bus pci7; device:6; function: 3

Did you reinstall the operating system on your notebook?

Usually the notebook is delivered the Toshiba image and there should be unknown devices in the device manager?

In the forum some guys have placed the link to the very useful Toshiba document.
It described how to identify the unknown devices.

Maybe it will help you to find out what device it is.
Then you can download the right driver from the Toshiba page?

Hello Everyone,

I got a an A100-797 with Vista Home Premium 32Bit and I was cruising along the system properties. Via "Control Panel -> System" I saw the CPU spec as

Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00 Ghz, 2.00 Ghz

Then I checked the Device Manager CPU section, it showed me two CPUs

Do you think this is normal?

hopefully I have selected the correct section to post this question.

Basically my PC(Dell Dimension 2400) has stopped recognising USB devices (1 exception).
I have tried connecting an iPhone, an external hard drive, a flash drive and a digital camera.

I've read a few forums and after trying a few things have noticed that there is an Unknown Device shown in Device Manager. On looking further I found that it is USBROOT_HUB20.

I am assuming this is the cause of the problem.

So far I have tried the following

Deleting unknown device and restarting PC, no effect
Re-Install chipset drivers
BIOS Update
All of these worked in their own right, but not with regards to fixing the unknown device issue.

The one exception I mentioned is a printer which has its own power source, so thought perhaps that could be the cause i.e. a lack of power to the other devices.

Can anyone help and is this possibly the cause of my problem with the above devices ?

The technical information on my PC is:

Operating System: Windows XP Personal (SP2)
Anti Virus Software : Active Virus Shiled
Anti Spyware Software : AdAware
How do you connect to the net : Netgear Wireless Router

Answer:USB\ROOT_HUB20 listed as Unknown in Device Manager

Good information helps, thanks.

This is normally a driver issue ... is there a yellow exclamation/question mark by the device in Device Mangler, if so, it needs updating, worth checking the Windows Update Site anyway, use the "custom" button to look for all updates.

However, you could try using an external USB "powered" hub ... beg, borrow or buy one. Look for "HighSpeed" sticker or logo. Cheap enough.

It's not unusual for a USB to fail, or cause the devices to fail, by trying to draw too much juice. A std hard drive needs 12v but the std USB port typically only produces 2.5 watts at 5 volts ... we seem to be a bit short.

That was only a loose example, but you get my drift.

Here is a great source of anything USB ...

Welcome to the forums.

I am having a slight issue with my new setup, appears to be driver-side. Every time I restart my computer a window pops up stating that a driver could not be installed for "IDE channel." This box appears six times in which I have to close out. There are six of these "IDE channel" devices listed (under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) in the Device Manager w/ the little (!) next to them. When I go to install a driver for each of the devices I get "driver is not intended for this platform" or something like that. I don't know what I should do because I'm really not sure what I am looking at exactly. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I've installed all the drivers for my motherboard, graphics cards, and sound card ...all of which work fine. In the Device Manager, I am also seeing two "PCI device" and a single "Unknown" device. The only PCI card I have installed is the Sound Blaster and I installed the drivers for that; it works fine. No idea what the "Unknown" is...

I'm really stuck, so I'd appreciate help if someone can give it.

I'm working on someone's computer. I should mention that I am doing this remotely, & I don't have another choice just now.

Due to a whole mess that with his computer, we needed to do a full destructive installation of windows. (XP Pro SP2)

Now, here's the problem. There were no USB devices listed in the device manager in windows after the new installation. There also aren't any unknown devices. There had been one, for audio, but I've fixed that.

The computer is older & the motherboard is a Microstar International MS-6738. I went to their site. i've run their live update multiple times but it just isn't finding anything missing regarding usb controllers and I did the 3 available updates for the motherboard. They didn't seem related, but i tried just in case. No luck, besides of course the audio working.

At this point I'm really at a loss. I feel like throwing the computer out the window, except I can't even reach it to do that! lol

Any ideas? Thanks for spending the time, for anyone who read this.
I did also run belarc advisor. If it would help, ask & i'll post it, as long as that's ok on this board.

Hello there!

I would be very grateful for any help/hints if somebody has an idea what to do....

My gf has the above mentioned laptop (w/o preinstalled OS) and we can not get the display adapter to work properly - situation is as follows

1) mobile intel 4 series express chipset family and an unknown device with a question mark in device manager
2) both are on the same PCI BUS 0, device 2?
3) intel is not working because it has no free resources (should I delete the unknown device?) to work with
4) HW ID for the unknown device is pci ven_8086&dev_2A43 and for intel is pci ven_8086&dev_2A42 (so basically the same, right?)
5) last, but not least, if I go to Desktop-personalize-advanced (first of all no 1280*800 resolution) i see under adapter type: . Exactly, nothing... under properties, this appears: non plug and play device, Super VGA and under driver, I see just the status and option to Stop, Disable, Automatic, Demand.... the device on startup... .If i disable it, the display just does not light up when the laptop is turned on....
Any ideas? I am going insaneeeeee......

Vista Home Premium, all other Toshiba SW installed (value pack, intel, BIOS 1.9, etc... - maybe BIOS did this?!)

Thanks in advance!!!

p.s. maybe SP1 that I am installing now will help?!

Answer:Satellite L300 PSLBGE - Unknown device in device manager

Wait a moment: I have checked Vendor ID and Device ID on and this device is the Intel graphic card. So I think this is the reason why you can?t change the screen resolution.

I assume that you have forgotten to install the display driver. Check the Toshiba website because there you can download the driver: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

After this you shouldn?t have any exclamation marks anymore.

You can install SP1 for Vista but this will not solve the problem with the missing display driver. But you should install it because it contains a lot of security updates they are important. Furthermore I would recommend to install SP2 for Vista.

I have a Dell Inspiron M731R laptop upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Home 64-Bit that suddenly quit connecting to the home network. Was using wireless, so switched to an Ethernet cable, but still no luck. I just discovered that ALL of the network-related devices are now listed under an "Unknown" tab in the Device Manager. A check of properties of each item in that folder says they are all working properly, but that obviously isn't the case. I tried uninstalling each of the 4 items, but when they are recognized again they still show up under the Unknown tab. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Answer:Network devices listed under Unknown in Device Manager

Well, oddly enough I managed to resolve this. I removed the devices under Unknown, then attempted to install an external USB wireless device (Realtek chipset). I used the installation disk for Windows 7 since there didn't appear to be one for Windows 10. When the OS set up the new device, it also rescanned and installed the other network devices... Properly this time! I uninstalled the new external device and all seems to be well with the world. I have no idea why this worked.

It WinXP Pro + SP 3.
In Device Manager display, as an unknown device. Try all drivers, who were on a disk along with the laptop, nothing helps. Give the solution!

Answer:Re: Satellite 5200-701: Unknown device in the device manager.

who should give you THE SOLUTION? I mean, you tried all drivers and nothing did installed... So, does your machine run properly? Does some device not work like it should?

Please check this firstly before installing all drivers without any success. Try to guess which device it could be, so then we can search for some solution.
A good beginning would be to check the device in the device manager and write some of the information which is contained in the Properties window of the device.
Please post the details which are in the properties of the device, maybe someone here in the forum can find out which device won?t work.

I assume also that the SP3 makes some problems, so another good option would be to deinstall the SP3 and go back to SP2.

I have a Satellite A80 127. I have an issue with my CD drive.

When I was trying to upgrade my XP home edition to XP Pro SP2, display said on rebooting that it couldn't read from my CD drive. On inspection I found that my CD/DVD drive is unable to read CDs though it can read DVDs. From what I remember, it was working fine couple of days before.

I was trying to locate the source of problem and through the Troubleshoot option I found that I have a yellow exclamation mark against my SCSI/RAID host controller in my Device Manager (with error code 39). I haven't been able to update the driver it will give me error message. Also, there was a Nero SCSI/RAID controller. I tried removing it to check whether the main one works, but still no success.

Any suggestion would be great and in the meantime I will try to find similar threads.

I'm looking for some help with a recently purchased A500-17X running Windows 7 64 bit. The Webcam was working when purchased, but has suddenly stopped functioning. The Web camera application software is up to date with the latest download from the Toshiba website but returns the following message when launched:

"Web Camera initialization failed" Please check you camera device & restart application or computer.

I have checked the Device Manager under Imaging Devices for the webcam & it is not listed (This is my own laptop; I also have a Toshiba laptop provided by employer & this is where the webcam is listed on that one, so I presume it should be listed in the same place!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be a loose connection to the webcam itself, i.e. a warranty issue or is there a software solution to check if the webcam is actually present? I have run scan for new hardware & nothing new is detected.

Thanks in anticipation!

Answer:Satellite A500-17X - Webcam not listed in device manager

Hi Jon,

At the moment it?s really hard to say why you get this error message. Firstly I would also try to reinstall the webcam driver but you have already done this.
What about BIOS update? Did you try it? In my opinion it?s worth a try and maybe it can help you. You can get it on the Toshiba website too. Before you make the update, update all drivers from zip-archive and close all running programs.

If it doesn?t work I would try reinstalling the OS. Maybe a 3rd party application is blocking the webcam.

In worst case you need professional from an authorized service provider but this should be covered by warranty! :)

Im afraid you dont have a hw com port on the unit. The com ports that you have on the laptop are "virtual ports". If you are expriencing diffuculties connecting to the internet, could you please go to device manager ( by going to the system in control panel and choosing hardware tab ) and then go to the properties of the Toshiba software modem and go to the diagnostics tab and then click on the query modem button and post the outcome.

P.S you will only have com port listed under the device manager if and only if you have a serial port on the computer.

Is there a problem with my driver software or what? Keeping in mind that when I click SYSTEM in control panel it shows me that the processor is T5300 @ 1.73GHz 1.73 GHz.

I need to know if there is any problem with my laptop because I feel that it is not working fast enough.

Answer:Two processors listed in device manager of my Satellite A200-1MD

Yes, it looks like this is a common Vista issue.
At first time my CPUs on the L30 notebook were recognized as two different CPUs with different speeds.
You have to remove the CPU from device manager and have to reboot the notebook.

After new reboot and new CPU installation the device manager will show the right speed ;)

Answer:Unknown device on Satellite A100-153 after BIOS update to 5.1

ACPI -> Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
ACPI defines hardware and software interfaces that enable OS-directed configuration and Power Management to enumerate and configure motherboard devices.
For example: ACPI is needed for the stand by and hibernation mode.

Now to you question; the new BIOS was updated and configured for VISTA usage.
It seems the VISTA was not compatible with the previous BIOS version because of the ACPI interface. Now you can install the Vista on the notebook but it seems you will need an driver. Possibly new chipset driver release could help. But as you probably know, the drivers are not available at this time. Unfortunately?

I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it?

I checked the device manager and the only audio devices listed are my GPU and 'intel display audio'... my mobo's audio device isn't listed there so i'm guessing this is the reason none of the outputs are working.

Anyone know a way around this? I only noticed this after installing windows 10.

Answer:Mobo audio device isn't listed in device manager

Looks like you have posted a picture but i can not access it.
What mobo do you have? you should be able to download the drivers from the mobo manufacturer's site.
but first try Start - Power - Restart (not shutdown) this sometimes forces windows to see hardware and install new drivers.

Hi there.

I am hoping someone might be able to help me. I have recently bought a 2nd hand A100-998. When I boot it up I get several 'question marks' over various items: Ethernet controller, mass storage controller, network controller, sm bus controller and video controller (vga compatiable).

I also get a message after the machine boots up which says: The ATI control panel failed to initalize because no ATI driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not working properly. The ATI control panel will now exit.

The computer also says its found new hardware (all of the ethernet controller etc) but
I have no driver disc's for these, and can't find any.

I think the problem is that my recovery disc has on it windows XP home edition, and it looks like the system should be windows media edition. Is there anyone out there who knows what I can do or any solution to fix this.

Answer:Satellite A100-998: several question marks in the device manager

Hi David

All this yellow question marks appear due to missing and not installed drivers.
You have to install all the compatible and available drivers and you will get rid of all these issues.

On the Toshiba driver page you will find all XP drivers for A100 PSAA9E. Your A100-998 is a one from the PSAA9E series so visit the Toshiba European driver page and download all available drivers and tools.

Additionally you should take a look into the installation instruction document. This document shows you the right installation order!
The right drivers installation order is important and necessary!

good luck

The drivers that I tried from the Toshiba home page didn't solve the problem.
Sorry for my bad English I hope you can help me with my problem.

Answer:Satellite A100-411: yellow (!) mark in device manager after XP installation

Hi Sebastian

It?s funny? it seems you are the first person who wants to DOWNgrade the OS and not update the notebook to Vista.

Anyway, at this time I would prefer to use XP.
It seems you have installed the drivers in the wrong order or some drivers are missing:
Very important is the Intel Chipset V7.2.1.1006

Ethernet controller -> Lan or/and WLan driver
In my knowledge this unit supports this LAN card: Intel 10/100(Ekron)/GbE(Vidaria/Tekoa) Wired and you would need the LAN driver version 9.3.29

You will also need and sound driver. I think you have to install the Realtek audio driver with UAA bus driver V5.10.0.5253.

The CD/DVD drive doesn't appear on the windows manager and I can't incert CD
The BIOS display "none" in the place of "optical device"

Does it mean that the CD device is dead ?

Answer:Satellite A100: CD/DVD drive doesn't appear in device manager and BIOS

Hi Micky,

Unfortunately it probably does :-( . You could try to remove the optical drive and then re-insert it into the notebook, then power on and see if it is recognised as a new device.

Also check that it is not shown in device manager and if it is remove it before trying the above.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have a look here:

Select your operating system from the drop-down list, expand the VGA category and download whichever drivers you want.

I'd be inclined to save them before you install them in case you need them in the future.

I have a Satellite A100, Model PSAANC-3605C. I recently reloaded Windows XP Professional on it, and now I am unable to get any sound (it worked before the reload). If I select Start, Accessories, Entertainment, Volume, it tells me there are no active mixers available. I have tried reloading the chipset, and various audio drivers, including UAA driver, still no luck.

Also, in my Device Manager I have a PCI device that shows as not available (yellow question mark), and I am unable to load a driver for it. What am I missing? How can I get my sound back?

Answer:Satellite A100 sound issue - yellow question mark in device manager

> I recently reloaded Windows XP Professional on it, and now I am unable to get any sound (it worked before the reload)

Hey mate? I had exactly the same trouble after Win XP installation.
I could solve it?.

I have updated the Windows XP to the latest state. I have installed SP3 because this package contains necessary patches.

Important: The SP3 has to be installed before sound driver!!!
If you have installed sound driver then you need to remove it firstly! This can be done in device manager?

I did it and it worked?.

I have a problem with battery driver. I'm using Microsoft Windows XP professional. Manager of devices shows battery 2x (unknow devices!). Anybody have the same problem?

I'm waiting for answers. I am greeting everyone. Sorry for my English

Answer:Satellite L500-1GE - Battery unknown in device manager

There is no battery driver that you mean. It?s a part of Windows and you don?t have to change anything on it.

So please check the device manager again. What devices you mean exactly? Have you already checked the device and vendor ID?

Maybe you should try to remove both entries and restart the notebook. After this the drivers should be installed automatically.

I have the following listed as question marks in my device manager:

?Multimedia controller
?Network Controller
?Unknown device

I have installed the sound and it works
I have installed the network adapter and it works

What are the above devices?

Answer:Satellite A200-1LA - unknown devices in device manager

Wait a moment. Which operating system you try to configure?

Have you checked on Toshiba download section if ?installations Instructions? document is available? If you just follow this document you will install all you need and everything will be OK.
Anyway, multimedia controller can be Multicard reader device, network controller is probably wireless card. I cannot say what unknown device is because I do not know which drivers you have installed already.

satellite L300 OS - Vista 32

I installed new software to use USB port to connect the board and program that board During this installation some things went wrong and all my USB port are not responding or not working at all...

When i checked the Device Manager it shows like Other device -> Unknown device..

I install the chipset from Toshiba download and still I can?t solve the prob....

my USB all port not working..
my WiFi is not working..
my Camera is not working...

rest of all work i guess any suggestion to solve this problem?

Answer:Re: Satellite L300 - Unknown devices in device manager

Could it be possible that the 3rd party software which you have installed to use the USB ports has muddled up the whole system?

The driver for the unknown device which appear in the device manager can be identified very easily.

I recommend checking this HowTo:

You need the Vendor ID and Device ID and using these both ID in pci database would help you to find out the right driver.

By the way: if your Wlan and cam don?t work, install the drivers? die you already tried this?

Answer:Lenovo Solution Center Shows Unknown Device But Device Manager Doesn't

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to inform that it is a false indication from Lenovo solution center. Since Windows doesn?t detect any missing device drivers within the device manager, there is no driver that is missing.
If the warning keeps popping up, change the reminder settings to ?never?. Probably, you have to wait for an LSC update in which the bug would be fixed.
Refer here for further information regarding the issue.
Hope it helped!

Let me just say this; the Windows 10 app on my pc (runing Win7 Ultimate) did not say anything about this issue, that's why I upgraded.
Under my windows 7 I had 2 Realtek RTL8168D PCI-E Gigabit Nic; which I had setup for teaming with the Realtek Teaming Utility;
after the upgrade I found out that utility was not compatible with Windows 10, which sucks.
My real problem is under the Device Manager I only see one (1) Nic listed.... is this normal for Windows 10?
Also, does anyone know how to setup a NIC Team without using the Realtek utility?

Answer:Device not listed under Device Manager

I figure it out myself; here is what I did:

1. Downloaded but did not install the new Realtek drivers from website for Windows 10
2. Uninstall all NIC cards from pc thru Device Manager (also deleted the drivers)
3. Restart the pc
4. Install the new drivers which I download on step 1
5. Restart the pc
At this point I have all my NIC cards showing in Device Manager
6. Downloaded and install new version of the team utility; did not run yet
7. Windows 10 created a folder on my C:/ drive called Windows.old when I did the upgrade
8. Rename the team utility executable file to *.old (from the regular Realtek Utility folder under program folder from the new windows
9. Copy the old version of the team utility executable file from the windows.old folder into the new folder of
the utility under Windows
10. Run the utility

New Team is created with no issues

I'm using the W540 with an ultradock and external monitors. After upgrading my W540 to win8.1 64 bit, device manager is showing an unknown device. I'm not quite sure what it is, but almost everything seems to be working fine and Lenovo solution center isn't finding any driver updates. I did notice that the solution center hardware scan did not test the video card memory and listed that test as N/A. I have a Toshiba laptop, model L505-ES5018. I had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed on here, but decided to reformat my hard drive using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. After the reformat was finished, I ran Windows Update and it found several items to download and install for me. I noticed that it also found optional items to download and install for me, so after all the important updates installed, I ran the optional updates. After all of this installed, I checked Device Manager to see if there were any errors and I found nothing. I assumed everything was fine. I decided to check Devices and Printers and under my laptop icon, there was a yellow icon with an exclamation point on it. I decided to run the troubleshooting option when I right-clicked the gave me a solution to download a Toshiba password utility program, so I did that and nothing happened, even after restart. Same icon appeared. When I clicked on the icon a second time, I noticed that the model of my computer at the bottom of this window, changed from L505 to TIAS. I have no idea what this is. I decided to do another reformat on my hard drive. This time, I ignored the optional updates. I checked Devices and Printers again, the same icon appeared but the model of my computer said L505, like it should. There is something in the optional updates that is changing this. I recently put together a new computer, and in the process of of installing the USB 3.0 connector from the front of my GX500 case, I either bent numerous pins on the motherboard USB 3.0 header or the motherboard shipped that way and I inadvertently made matters worse. Anyway, that header on the motherboard is without a doubt unusable.
Since I don't really need the USB 3.0 functionality, I bought a USB 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter cable, connected one end to the connector on the front of the case and the other end into the USB 2.0/1.1 header on the motherboard. Unfortunately, when Windows 7 boots and I plug a device into the front ports of the case, Windows detects the front USB ports as "Unknown Device" within Device Manager yet says the driver is successfully installed. I've already downloaded the most current Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard, deleted and reinstalled all USB drivers, and all rear USB connections are working perfectly fine - it's just the two front ports that are connected from the case to the USB 2.0/1.1 ports via the adapter cable.  I've tried both USB 2.0/1.1 headers on the motherboard, and I've tried plugging in several devices to the front USB ports, and this problem still persists.
I've ensured the connection inside the case is solid, yet I cannot get Windows to recognize the front USB ports.  However, I have confirmed that power is being sent to the front ports because it charges my phone when I connect it to the front USB ports via m... Read more

Hi everybody.

I just bought myself a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 yesterday. After installing the card and the required drivers everything works like a charm. However, every time I start up my PC I get a message saying that a new device has been found on my system. On checking Device Manager I found an "Unknown device" entry under "Other devices".

I'm attaching a screenshot of Device Manager.

Are there any drivers I'm missing? It only happened after removing my old card (after uninstalling all its drivers) and installing the Radeon.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Unknown Device In Device Manager After Installing Radeon HD 4890

I have a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 (I also have a Gigabyte 4890 and XFX 4890 in two other PCs). I think you need to install the latest ATI Catalyst Suite. You may have installed the driver only package. Anyway, I think it has to do with the HDMI capabilities of the card. High def sound is built into the card (the HD part of the card name) and the HD sound driver is part of the Catalyst Suite. When you use an HDMI cable to an appropriate display, HD sound is also transmitted through the same cable from the Radeon graphics card.

Of course, be sure to install .NET Framework 2.0 as it is required before you can install the full Catalyst Suite. The HD sound driver won't install without it. At least I had trouble before I installed .NET 3.5. I went to Windows Update and installed .NET Framework 3.5. 2.0 is included in that update and 2.0 wasn't available separately.

Answer:Satellite Pro U300 - 2 Unknown devices in Device manager running XP

One could be the unknown PCI memory manager.
This PCI memory controller is Intel Turbo Memory also called Intel Flash cache logic chip.
It is a new technology designed to support new Vista capabilities.
There is no driver for it for Windows XP, because XP doesn?t support the cache function. Only Vista supports this!

I have no idea what could be the other unknown device. Check simply what devices don?t run and you will know what it is!

One more yellow ? to go.  Thanks to the good advice rampant on this forum, I was able to figure out how to install the other drivers I needed.   This last one is messing with my mind tho.  It's unfair for a problem to not even have a name, doncha think?   About all I can fathom about this 'Unknown device' is its location:  'on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller'. I tried the driver for 'Embedded Controller' and when I double click, it takes over the computer and tells me not to shut it down and begins installing 49 fixes.  When I did it, the program got to the 21st fix, and that was as far as it would go.  I shut down the computer after about 20 minutes.  It did not remove the 'Unknown device' remark in Device Manager. What's a poor boy to do? Also, Windows is taking forever to load. This was not the case yesterday.  Thanks for all your help. 50GreenDodge in Phoenix

The latest versions for your ThinkPad T40 Model 2374-75U can be found here on Lenovo's web site. If if that does not work, you could try going back into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), selecting the Unknown Device to view its properties and then go to the Details tab, where you should see several values listed in the property sheet for things like "Device Description", "Hardware IDs",  "Compatible IDs" and so forth.  Try using these as search terms in your favorite search engine to see if doing so leads you to a more detailed description of the device, including a manufacturer, brand, model or part number. Once you have that information, it may be easier to find the appropriate device driver for the unrecognized hardware. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

I have a x200 that I am just setting up. I have one Unknown device in the device manager, after downgrading it to Win Xp. The only ID i can see is ACPI\Intc0102\  I have already installed the intel chip set updates, TPM , Fingerprint reader.Anyone have a good guess what driver I need?

Answer:X200 Loaded with Win XP Unknown device in device manager

All you have to do is download Lenovo Update.  A list of other updates you'll need after that are the following: Bluetooth Manager from X200 Driver Page (if you bought it)Intel 5100/5300 Drivers from Intel Webpage (if you bought it)Intel Matrix Storage 8.5 Drivers from Intel Webpage. That should be everything.

I recently got a Satellite A100-912 (PSAA9E). Windows XP home was the preinstalled os. But when I installed Vista Ultimate, device manager is showing that one device is missing driver. Its properties show that it is located on PCI Bus 7, Device 6 and function 3.

I downloaded all listed drivers for the system from toshiba site. So, can any one tell me what device it is and where I can find the driver for it? All of the devices such as display, sound, modem, lan/wlan, card reader, finger print reader, multi media buttons, Super multi drive and touch-pad are working nicely.

Answer:Satellite A100-912 (PSAA9E) one device is missing after Vista installation

Hi buddy,

I really don?t know which device this is, but you can try for example a linux live cd. The live cd lists you at bootup a pci device list so you can find out which hardware is in your machine.

Alternatively you can search under google for "pci list Vista" and you maybe find some pci listing tools which can help you to get some information about thjat unknown hardware.

Hi there,

I have the following problem:

I downloaded the official Toshiba Mobility Driver for Windows Vista 32bit (I got a Satellite A100 (PSAA9) for the built in x1400 mobility.

Once I start the setup, it will install ccc, but the actual driver, no matter what I do! If I try to install the driver manually, Windows says

"Cannot read from the device (ATI Mobility X1400)"

As an error message during install. It won't work in safe mode, either.
May someone help? Thx alot!

Greetz Jens

Answer:Satellite A100 - ATI Vista driver wont install - cannot read from device

I am not 100% clear on your problem you say the Driver has installed then in part this is not so? What is the function of the
ATI Mobility X1400 ?

Try viewing the device in Device Manager :

You will then see a list of Devices with a + next to each one

Locate the ATI Mobility X1400 then click the + sign next to it and see if any errors are diplayed yellow mark ! (Also note what the error is)

If their is yellow mark ! >> uninstall the Driver and reinstall it.

Answer:B590 - Unknown device in Device Manager

hi nikos78,
Can you check if this is the driver for it.
Check if the Hardware ID of this device is a ACPI\VPC2004
on that same windows that you posted click the Details tab and change the value to Hardware ids
Now check the detail that will show below, if that shows ACPI\VPC20004 then that is a Lenovo Energy Management Controller.

device Manager (XP) shows 'problem device' at PCI Slot 17 (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 1) and if i delete it wants to reinstall. I don't know what it is or what drivers it wants. I have a Gigabyte 8400GS installed as display adapter at PCI Slot 17 (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0) if that is significant. Any advice for me please?

Answer:device manager unknown Problem Device

Is that what it says, "problem device"? And I could be wrong, but I kind of doubt it's "PCI Slot 17".

Answer:SL 500 - Unknown device problem in Device Manager

I have this exact same problem-it occurred all of the sudden one morning when I tried to log on.I believe the "Unknown Device" (one of the "System Devices" in the Device Manager) is the ATK0101 ACPI Utility and uses a driver called A0101X32.sys which seems to be nowhere on my computer (I have no idea where it went or why it vanished). However, I cannot manage to find this driver on the website and download/install it, and what's more, when I try to do so, the "Update Driver" dialog boxes informs me that the file I must find is one with the extension "*.inf" which doesn't make any sense whatsoever.Has an answer to this problem been found?

Hello everyone, I hope you could give me some clue that may have caused the appearance of an unknown device. All information here : An unknown device appears

First, That was solved by uninstalling and rebooting, did not appear anymore. But as I said in the previous topic, that solution does not leave me entirely peaceful.
Since when searching for information on the issue, some say it may be a virus. But also by the HWMonitor. I prefer it was caused by HWMonitor instead of a virus.

Can give me a hand to remove my doubts about whether it was caused by a virus or not.

I scanned all the PC with ESET 6 and nothing.

Thank you for your time and help

Sure, lets begin:

1.) Download herdprotect: (choose the portable version)

Download herdProtect - Free Anti-Malware Platform

2.) Run the scan.

3.) When the scan finishes, save the results per the screenshot below. Then upload the log here.

DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING YET. I will advise if anything needs removed when I receive the log.

Answer:K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

hi ktmcmo,
As per the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Guide by Lenovo, certain components and their functions might be affected after upgrading the unit to Windows 8.1 (this includes the USB Port).
Just to verify, have you tested both the USB 2.0/3.0 ports using any usb devices (flashdrive, mouse, etc.)? If you see that one port is not functioning, you can try to:
1. uninstall all USB Root Hubs under USBView or Device Manager.
2. Install the Intel Chipset Update Utility.
Intel chipset Driver
     Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
3. Reboot the PC and observe.

I just replaced the hard drive with a new one. I reinstalled all the software; however I can't seem to find the software needed to correct the error. I've downloaded the power manager and TRM software, but the problem remains. I'm running XP Pro 32 bit with SP3. The software listed states it's for SP2, not 3. Maybe that's the problem. I can't seem to find anything "new" in the company database. Besides this one error everything else is loaded and running fine. My computer is a 7417-TPU.

 2) Unknown device Upon further inspection of the Unknown device I found the following which doesn't appear to result in much when googled:

Now as far as I have seen from using the laptop for 2 hours or so everything on the laptop seems to work but I would love to know what these two mysterious devices are that appear to be missing driversThanks for your help

Under the Details tab, choose the "Hardware IDs" dropdown option and post (or Google) the VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx string.  That usually gives enough to point you in the right direction.

Dear All,

I bought a Satellite L30-PS33 with Vista but due to driver issues with my existing peripherical equipments, I decides to change from Vista to XP.
I have a problem with internal HUB usb, even if the installation is OK with windows XP generic drivers when I plug an USB devise, I have the message: Unknow device.

Can you give a link to find the good drivers I have to use in my computer?
It's very difficult to use a computer without any USB equipment?

Thank you and I hope you have any solution for me.

Best regards.

Answer:Satellite L30-SL33 : Unknown device after pluging external device to USB

There are no USB drivers for any Windows operating system.
Fact is that USB driver are a part of the Windows system and you will not find any 3rd party drivers for a USB port.

In your case I would recommend updating the BIOS and to update the Win XP to the latest state. All XP patches and updates should be installed!!!

Could you give me a link to the drivers (ideally the entire package of drivers for this computer system and WIN7 x32?)

Thank you.

Hi,The Computer is Fujitsu Siemens Scenic ET. Windows 98.There is no CD-Rom listed in the Device Manager Tab. When I start the Cd player the following message appears on the screen:"There is no cdrom player attached to this computer. Cd Player cannot start."I have no idea as to what caused this problem??Thanks in advance!!

Answer:No CD-Rom listed in Device Manager!!!

Open the case and check the connections from your cdrom to the board, it could simply have come loose, make sure you earth yourself. Any light from the cdrom? There are 2 connections, a ribbon lead and a power lead. If you have a spare power lead from the power supply unit try that one in place. Also make sure the ribbon lead is firmly pushed onto the M/B.

I have a dual core AMD CPU. In Device Manger, it shows that I have two of them. I deleted one of them once but it came back.

Anybody have any thoughts on the subject? Should 2 be listed because it's a dual core CPU?

Answer:Two CPU's Listed in Device Manager

Yes, there's supposed to be 2 there. It counts 2 "logical" CPU's, but there's still only 1 physical CPU. It's the same in my Core 2 Duo computer; and if you were to have a quad core, there'd be 4 listed in the device manager.

I cannot currently get online through wifi or an eithernet cable. In my device manager one iteam is listed as an 'unknown device' and I believe it may be my network driver. Also I get a driver error when trying to connect to my wifi, but I am able to see my wifi and connect to it with my phone. I'm assuming I'll need some sort of driver download, but being as my older phone is the only way I can get in the internet right now it's been hard tracking down what I need. I own a NV57H20u laptop. If someone could link the download for me that would great. Or let me know what I should do instead. Also I've already ran the computer in safe mode with networking and AVG as well as Malwarebytes without any luck.

Answer:Network driver is listed as 'unknown device'

On the unknown device in Device Manager, right click and select Properties. Under the Details tab select Hardware ID's in the dropdown box. Please copy and paste the first line in your next post.

Hey guys, I Recently had Windows 7 installed on one of my computers but the computer isn't very good so I downgraded back to windows xp sp2.

My problem is after Windows Xp installs on this computer it doesn't detect my network device. What I mean by this is there is no network tab or anything listed in the device manager.

My ethernet is built into my mboard which is an EVGA nf66.

I've tried installing all sorts of drivers and combinations of the such and nothing seems to work. The internet worked fine prior to installed xp and has had xp before without this problem.

Also, in the device manager there are 3x devices that are listed with yellow exclamation marks beside them that I am unsure what they are.

-PCI device
-other pci bridge device
-sm bus controller

I previously had another computer with this same exact problem that I couldn't fix as well, the only way I could fix it was to install windows 7.

Please help guys I really need this to work.

I'm using an dell inspiron laptop with windows vista. Few days back, installed windows Xp professional successfuly. The main purpose I installed xp was to program a microcontroller via the com ports. But to my surprise the com ports were not listed in the device manager in XP! Any help??

Answer:COM Ports not listed in device manager

Are you sure the laptop actually has a COM Port? Finding a laptop with a COM port newer than a Pentium III model is rare, as they have been all but replaced by USB.

Make sure you're not confusing a VGA port for a COM port. Same size and shape but the VGA has 3 rows of contacts (15 total) instead of 2 rows of contacts (9 total) for a COM port.

If the laptop shipped with Vista I'd be surprised if it did. Even many 4-5 year old laptops that shipped with XP don't have a COM port.

If it does have a COM port, check in the BIOS to make sure it's not disabled
