Satellite C70D-B-10U no warning crash (power, GPU or capacitors)

Question: Satellite C70D-B-10U no warning crash (power, GPU or capacitors)

Hi all,

excuse the new thread but I haven't found any answers anywhere online, just speculation and it's for different models.

So I have a C70D-B-10U, running windows 7 64bit pro. When I formatted it and updated everything, it just kept crashing when trying to play back videos on Windows Media Player. I cleaned the inside and replaced thermal paste, updated to even newer drivers, and started using VLC as my default media player. It rarely crashed BUT it always does when I try to start playing games (nothing heavy - League of Legends). Laptop seems to be doing well with memory tests, no faults detected.

I've read that this could be caused by:
Faulty GPUFaulty BatteryFaulty PSUBad Capacitors on the MOBO

Has anyone had any similar experience? I've reinstalled Windows and it's the same story. If it's a motherboard issue, I guess it would be better to just get a new one?

Preferred Solution: Satellite C70D-B-10U no warning crash (power, GPU or capacitors)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite C70D-B-10U no warning crash (power, GPU or capacitors)

Update: I decided to test the RAM and it seems like it can't handle 8GB. Both 4GB sticks work on any slot, but when I have all of it on the machine it crashes. Do you think it is a motherboard issue?

so about 2 months ago my problem started.
My laptop (HP dv7-4085eb) would just shut down without any warning.
I could avoid this problem with doing the following: when starting the laptop or taking the laptop out of sleep mode it shouldn't be on the adapter. When the laptop would start on the adapter it would shut down after 1 min - 2 hours... This is quite annoying.

But now the problem has gotten worse, the trick to take the laptop out of sleep mode while not being on the adapter doesn't work anymore.

I do not get a blue screen or any warning it just shuts down and reboots... I have updated my bios to the latest settings...

I have searched the forums and found ([SOLVED] Kernel Power 41 (63)) but that didn't help for me, I could not run the windows driver verifier because it gave me BSOD on starting windows.

If I check the logs I get the following:

I read recently (can't remember where now) that is was good practice to occasionally:
1. Shut down the computer (Start, shutdown, etc,)
2. Turn off the power switch on the power supply (on the back near the power cord)
3. Then depress the on/off switch on the front.
This supposedly drains the power out of the the capacitors and/or whatever else on the mother board might be applicable, which is a good thing to do. I have done it a few times - when the front on/off switch is depressed there is a flash of the light on the front panel once, further pushes of the on/off switch do nothing, implying that there is a drain of power of some kind.
Ever heard of this? Is it good? Could it be bad? Does it matter?

Intel Core 2 Duo, XP Media Center 2005, Dual 350GB Matxtor HD's, 2 GB DDR2 Ram

Thanks in advance for any information on this.

I recently purchased parts to build a new PC. First five days the PC was working great, but then the power supply failed. To make sure it was the power supply I connected it to my old PC and the results were the same, the computer dies in less than a second (if you even consider the PC to be on at that point). The day after I test the defective power supply I sold my sold PC to a friend, and when I went over to hook it up for him it starts crashing. The screen goes blank but the power light is still on. Sounds like a motherboard problem, and sure enough when I open it several capacitors have burst (electrolyte fluid dried on the top of them).

Now the motherboard is 8 years old, so it isn't impossible that age is the cause of this, but I dont know a whole lot about the power aspect of electrical components so I don't really know the likelyhood that the power supply caused the damage. The defective power supply is an 800W one, so I'm guessing the potential is there for it cause to some serious damage if it isn't working properly, but I just dont know for sure. My main concern for this is because I wonder if it is possible that it caused damage to my new PC components. Anyone have an opinion about why this happened?

Oh, and the damaged motherboard is an old FIC AM37. I'm probably going to order some appropriate capacitors to attempt to fix it, for learning more than anything else. If anyone has experience with this and wants to offer some advise it wou... Read more

Just bought a Satellite C70D with Win 8.1. Everything works (as far as I know until know), except boot from DVD. I disabled in the bios the Secure Boot and changed the boot order to DVD first, then USB and then HDD. The DVD drive starts, but then it skips to the HDD and Windows is started. First time I tried there was a message like "DVD boot not supported" or something like that.
The DVD is bootable, so that is not the problem.
I would like to install Linux Mint alongside Windows.
Anyone solved this problem already?

Answer:Satellite C70D - How to boot from DVD

Update: changing from UEFI to CMS in the BIOS Advanced tab makes it possible to boot from DVD, but Windows won't boot anymore.... Is there any possibility to boot from DVDE and still be able to start Windows as well?

Good evening,

I'm sorry to disturb,
but I find myself in a situation to which I find no solution,
that's why I come here asking for some help.

A friend has just purchased the following laptop:
- Satellite C70D-B-307

but the worry is that apparently it is impossible to have access to the HDD recovery to execute the factory restoration.
I try all possible solutions that I find on the web and none of it works.

what to do ?

does Toshiba sell the recovery DVDs that will restore the computer to its factory state?

Thank you very much .

My wive purchase this computer coupple of months ago. It was from the beginning ferry slow on windows 8
The wurst laptop we ever had. We feel robbed of our money.

2 months ago we started with Ubuntu. It Still slow. IS there anybody with the same problems?

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-108 is very slow

Hi Marco

I don't have this notebook model and cannot confirm what you wrote but fact is that almost all new notebooks are pretty slow at the beginning. Many applications are set to start with Windows and this, of course, slows down boot time.
Windows updates are also set to automatic so in the background the machine will download and install many updates so this will slow down your machine rapidly.

In my opinion you should install original OS that you got with this machine and optimize it a bit.
Remove all useless stuff, change start-up option and disable automatic Windows updates.
In the past I have noticed that original preinstalled antivirus is also responsible for notebook?s performance so I don't use original preinstalled application but my own version of Avir Antivir and it runs perfectly.

Check all these options and I hope your machine will run much better than before.

Answer:Need some drivers for my Satellite C70D-B-10U

According notebook specification your machine was delivered with preinstalled Win8.1 64BIT ML.
Original preinstalled version is perfectly configured with all necessary drivers.

The question is: what are you doing with your machine?
Do you try to use some older Windows version?

Hello everybody,
the Toshiba Sat C70D-B-317 (PSCLEE01L009FR) is on it's way and I don't have it for the moment but I would like to know if there is a way to add some Ram to this machine without opening everything?
Also, is it possible to change the HD in the future in the same conditions?

sorry, but it's my first PC laptop and as a Mac user I'm completely lost with all these models and different serial numbers.

I thank you in advance for your answer.

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-317 - Ram upgrade

1. yes you can upgrade your RAM, This laptop has 2 slots with one 4GB standard so if you would you can put one more 4GB. With 2x4 you have Dual-channel and that works much faster than single

I don't know if your HDD can e upgraded. When it's not possible you can always buy a external HDD

I have a C70D-A-107 and want to speed up this notebook. Already placed 4gb extra memory so the notebook has now 8gb internal. I doubt whether it is usefull to put in 2x8gb. I think the processor is just to slow. It has a AMD E1-2100 inside. Is it possible to put in another (faster) processor?

Answer:Speed-up Satellite C70D-A-107

The Satellite C70D-A-107 was equipped with an AMD Essentials E1-2100 Accelerated CPU (1,00 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache)
It’s not the fastest CPU therefore the notebook performance isn’t the best…

But CPU upgrade isn’t officially supported by notebook manufacturer... therefore I don’t think that you will be able to upgrade the CPU…

I read about successful Intel CPU upgrades but did not meet anyone who was able to perform an upgrade with an AMD CPU

Answer:Need new display for my Satellite C70D-A

The Satellite C70D-A-11K was equipped with the 17.3" LED color LCD panel with the supporting max resolution of 1600 x 900 px
You should be able to order such display panel from local Toshiba authorized service provider or you could check some 3rd part online dealers who provide compatible notebook parts…

As I mention above: you should look for the 17.3" panels.

Answer:Can I replace the HDD in my Satellite C70D-B -00P model with an SSD?

Generally speaking yes, you can do this but problem is that your notebook model doesn't have HDD cover at the bottom side.
To have full access to the HDD the bottom cover must be removed completely but it should be done by authorized service only.

Of course you can try to do it alone but I?m afraid you may lose the warranty.
If possible contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country, explain the situation and ask for help.

Hi all,

My grandmother recently bought this Toshiba, mostly i recommend people a Toshiba but this is going to far.

I wasn't aware that she bought a laptop untill she called me and said she needs help because she never worked with such a slow computer as this Toshiba.

So my question is

How much logic does Toshiba has? I mean putting 6GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM ( ok nice for a casual laptop ) doesn't quite fit with a >>1GHz<< processor. for the rest the specs aren't terrible.

Can somebody explain me why this laptop has a 1GHz processor with 6GB of RAM. this doensn't makes sence at all

I picked up a brand new c70d-b-10u today from a well known retailer.
I turned it on, set the language, gave a computer name, hooked up to a wi fi and then it asked for Other User Password!

I never entered a password to start with so why is it asking for one?

I cannot get to the shop again until next week and urgently need to get up and running.

Any ideas greatly received.

Answer:Brand new Satellite C70D-B-10U wants a password?

Try to recover the notebook once again using the HDD recovery option.

The recovery procedure would reset the notebook back to factory settings… usually after that no passwords should be set…

My girlfriend bought me a new Toshiba laptop C70D-B-10U (my second Toshiba), it is a good laptop apart from the speakers they are terrible. I didn't want my first post to be a complaint but, Toshiba cut corners when it put the speakers in this series of laptops.

Or have I not set them right has anyone else had this problem, any ideas or solutions thank you.

Answer:Bad Speakers on Satellite C70D-B-10UM

I think your notebook has only small stereo speakers and the sound is not the best. I have Satellite S50-B with Harman/kardon speakers and sound is really good.

You can try to change sound options but if you want to have better sound I’m afraid you need external speakers, Maybe BT speakers.

So I bought this laptop a few months ago.
For the past few weeks the Laptop stopped playing sound.
I watched a stream in Chrome.

So actually I should be able to see the sound playing in the mixer.
But I wasn't able to play any sound or get any deflection in the mixer.

Then I installed Speccy and as this administration window popped up a sound was played and it worked.

I have no idea why the sound stopped working and why it started again.
Is someone able to help me?

I am using Windows 8.1

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-11D - no sound, random

The main thing is that you have sound again. It is not easy to say what was wrong there.
Have you installed some updates or anything else that can be responsible for this sound issue?

I have a Satellite C70D-A-114...

i hardly used it because it was slow

so i wanted to sell it

first i wanted to set it back to factory settings

doing that, in that process i seem to have deleted all files

so now i get message no bootable disc etc.

Tried everything, there is simply no recovery file

So where can i find such a file for free? It's just not normal that it is not on the site.

Answer:Need recovery files for my Satellite C70D-A-114

All you can find for free are all drivers, tools and utilities. Original recovery image (software package) is not for free and if you need it you must order recovery disc directly by Toshiba.

You can order it on

By the way: in user’s manuals document is clearly described how you can create recovery installation disc. I’m wondering you didn’t make it in the past.

I have 2 issues with my new Satellite C70D-B-32U.
When I put it in sleep mode, it does. But after about 5 minutes, it goes automatically to hibernate. This I don't want. And I don't want to disable hibernate, because I do use it when the laptop is not in use for longer periods. The power settings in control panel do not reflect this behaviour. In the settings, I specified that the laptop should never go to hibernate. Hybrid state is disabled.

And secondly, more importantly. Whenever it goes to hibernate, I can only wake it up with the power button. Not with the (internal) keyboard, not with the usb mouse. I would like an option to wake it from hibernate by pressing any key on the keyboard. In bios power on keyboard is set to on. Is there anything else I can change to have this available?
Actually if issue 1 is solved and the laptop stays in sleep mode, this issue is also solved since from sleep I can wake on a mouseclick which is also fine.

The OS is windows 8.1

Hi All,

I have an Satellite C70D-A-11D ... when I use once the FN Key to do a Print Screen or use the Screen-Zoom on the Space Key...

I am not able to use the Keynumbers 1 to 4 neither the space Key to enter a space between two always change between the bigger screen solution or the normal solution...

I only can change the FN Key again after change the settings in Display settings and after a reboot...
So I cant use FN without a reset with the F1 to F12 Key use and a reboot...

Normaly the FN Key works only if it is pressed...if not the normal Function of the Keys 1 to 4 or F1 to F12 will work if configured in the settings, or not?

What to do?

Kind regards

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-11D Function Key deactivate after use

First of all you can change between the special function key mode (without pressing FN key) or normal (standard) mode (Hold Fn first to use standard F1-F12 functions.)

This function can be changed in BIOS.
In BIOS go to Advanced -> System configuration

Check this option.

Hi There,

I have had a Satellite C70D for about 18 months now, but have not used it in the past year as I have been disputing with customer services about the windows licence for the machine as I lost it when I formatted the original hard drive before installing an SSD and they wouldnt send me a copy of it. I have now bitten the bullet and bought a windows 10 licence again. However since building the machine a few days ago, I have been having a couple of issues and as it is now out of warranty, I cannot contact customer support (Who I found unhelpful even when it was in warranty!)

The first issue is when I boot up the machine, occasionally the keyboard will not work, I cannot type the BitLocker pin and I have to remove the battery and press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, this then fixes the issue for a few reboots before it goes again.

The second is that occasionally it will boot up with a red x next to the WiFi symbol, but it detects the WiFi card, usually a reboot fixes this but not always. I have reseated the card and still no avail.

Can anyone shed any light on what may be causing this? The BIOS is up-to-date as are all of the drivers.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi there,

I was bought the above model of laptop for an early Christmas present which usually sits down in the living room, my old Satellite Pro sat down there with no issues however with this device the wireless signal is very low and I appear to be having it sitting right next to the wireless router (which is located upstairs in my sons bedroom), I wondered if there's any steps I could take to improve the signal?

It baffles me how a new system has such a poor wireless signal when my old Satellite Pro which was 6 years old had no wireless issues whatsoever.

My other issue is from the moment I switched the laptop on (yesterday when it was delivered) the updates on Windows Update are slow or don't start at all, is this an issue or just normal?

I'd appreciate any help or input at all, thank you.

Answer:Satellite C70D-A: game lags due to graphic chip?

Well, I?m wondering why you purchased a unit with an internal (part of CPU) graphic chip if you want use the notebook for gaming?

The notebook supports the AMD Radeon HD 8400 graphics which is part of AMD Quad-Core A6-5200 CPU.
Such GPU is similar to Intel HD GPU which is also part of Intel CPUs.

Such internal graphic cards are not really designed for gaming? of course you would be able to run and to play a game but don?t expect too much?

If optical disc drive is installed properly maybe is reading lens dirty. Try to clean it up.

Other way, if your ODD can read CDs but not DVDs it can also be hardware malfunction. The reading lens cannot be calibrated properly and cannot find the right position to read DVD media.

In such case ODD must be exchanged.

Try to clean lens up and check if the problem persists. If yes contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

I have buy a Satellite C70D-A-11T and pass it on Windows 7 64 bits Home Premium.
I install all the drivers and I haven't any problems.

When I want to connect it to my TV for first time, I discover there is no sound on the TV.
I try to go on the speaker (near the clock of windows), right click, sound, first tab (I think it is "Playback" in english... I have a french Windows) and my device (TV) doesn't appear.

I come back on Toshiba Support website to download the last driver "HDMI Audio driver" for my laptop, I connect the cable, and it appear in the sound properties. I select it as my default device and the sound come right from my TV.

Great !

But when I restart my laptop (with or without the HDMI cable), the TV disappear from the list in the sound properties, the only one solution to recover the sound is to reinstall the HDMI Audio Driver.
If I start the driver installation with the "advanced" option, I have the list of drivers to install and I see all drivers are already installed, but the HDMI Audio Driver will be upgraded... I install it and it work until the next restart.

Could you explain me why the version of the driver don't stay on the system, and how to make it work without reinstall it everyday ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi there

Pretty much every time I turn on my laptop I am being asked to enter in the date, it defaults to 1.1.2015. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can overcome this issue? Just to be clear this happens right at the point of turning the computer, i.e. before Windows even starts to load up. It must be date/time settings of the device.

Thanks for your help in advance

I have a toshiba C70D-B-306 (psclee) laptop and I reinstalled windows 8.1 from a seperate DVD because i exchange the default harddrive for a fast ssd disk.

Everything works but in my device manager I have 2 unknown devices listed (with exclamation mark), as far as I know I downloaded all available drivers from toshiba support website for this laptop and installed them but the 2 unknown devices simply will not disappear.

Can someone tell me which driver I exactly need for these 2 devices?

The 2 devices are:

As mentioned, i allready downloaded all drivers for this laptop and installed them, windows is ofcourse up-to-date. Also I let windows search for drivers on the Internet and on the whole drive, but no drivers where found.

Who can give me the golden tip?

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-306 - 2 unknown devices in device list

There is a good method in order to find out what drivers are missing.
First of all you should check the DEV (device) and VEN (vendor) IDs

Here is an short instruction how to find this details:

Knowing the device and vendor ID, it should not be a big deal to get the right drivers.

At the other hand you should install also additional Toshiba software (Toshiba System Driver) released for Win 8.1
Please note also that there are two Win 8.1 driver areas: ?Win 8.1 update? and ?Win 8.1 32bit/64bit? categories
In case you would not find all drivers within the Win 8.1 update check also the Win 8.1 32bit/64bit categories.

Would be grateful for any advice to remove the back panel.

I've removed battery, ~16 screws + 1 tiny screw at the optical drive and whilst it does 'unclick' everywhere else, there seems to be something stopping the panel being removed just above the battery compartment and don't want to force it.

Even our IT guys at work cannot work it out.

PLEASE new laptop is very slow so have purchased RAM but can't access the back.

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-30D: How to access back panel after ~16 screws removed

At first I must say that you should not remove bottom cover alone because it will cancel valid warranty. If there is no RAM cover, RAM should be exchanged or upgraded by authorized personal only.

I know every of us think it is easy to do and want to do this alone.
What I know is follow:
2 screws in the middle are fixing the keyboard. What must be removed are 14 screws and small flat screw at the optical drive. That’s all. There is no other hidden screw.

Of course there are also small plastic holders and bottom cover must be removed very gently.

I have a Satellite A60-297ITA bought with XP Home.
Now I've bought an XP Pro and I've installed it reformatting all the notebook.
Then I've installed all the drivers downloaded from your site.
The Installation of seems to work fine, but at reboot I obtain an error:
A fatal error has occurred. This program will be terminated. code: 0x7E.
What can I do?

Answer:Toshiba power saver crash on Satellite A60

Unfortunately it is not easy to say why this error message occurs. It is very important that you use Installation Instructions document while drivers and tools installation because the installations order is very important for successful installation.

Try to remove power saver and install it again.

Today I tried to use the free windows 10 upgrade.
After a few seconds I get a message that 'Installation of Windows 10 Upgrade can't edit/adjust the partition reserved for the system'
It then starts deleting the installation-files, and exits......
Anyone any idea how to solve this, and make the upgrade work ???

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade on Satellite C70D-A-11E can't edit partition reserved for system

Solved It myself, the problem was that the reserved partition for the system was only 100 MB !!!
Extended the size to 350 MB (as it should be !!!)

I've only noticed today that when I turn up my laptop's volume up to about 28 (even with headphones in), there's this high pitch noise that comes from the speakers. And I'm sure it's the speakers and not anything else.
But the sound is sort of that real ear-killing noise so I can't listen to it for long. It even sometimes sounds like thousands of crickets - a complete nightmare

But with my volume at any level below 28 I can listen to whatever through headphones without the sound bothering me.

Does anyone have any ideas for a solution? I do know a thing or two about computers but nothing about anything extremely technical and I'm not sure if I want to take it apart, unless I really have to.

If you could help me it would be appreciated!

About a week ago I got a popup from Norton Internet Security that said "We've detected an intrusion attempt from such and such IP address with the DeepThroat Trojan. This attack was blocked."

I didn't like the way that sounded so I did research on that trojan, but from what I read on the internet it didn't sound like I had it.

I ran scans with:
Norton Anti-Virus
Panda ActiveScan

And all came up clean.

Then some people said AVG was a good anti-virus, so I downloaded that, ran it, it came up clean, and then I deleted it because it slowed my computer down like crazy (constant 100% CPU usage, etc.)

Ever since then, I've been getting weird warnings and weird random program crashes.

I downloaded Firefox 3 the other day and it crashes a LOT. Some of the other programs I run have been randomly crashing, too (stock trading and charting programs).

I decided I was going to do a system restore to a month ago, but when I went into System Restore, ALL MY RESTORE POINTS WERE GONE!! I know I didn't delete them, so I'm wondering if some malware I picked up did.

I use Firefox for browsing 99.9% of the time so I usually feel safe surfing the web.

I'm using WinXP SP2.

edit - I forgot to mention that I came home from the gym the other day and when I got to my computer Firefox had crashed, all my other programs had crashed, and when I restarted Firefox, my computer rebooted. When it rebooted, there was a message from TeaTimer saying th... Read more

im not sure is this the right place to post, please help laptop had a video problem before, although it's now fixed, but there's some problem with the AC adaptor. when the AC adaptor is plugged in, my laptop crash immediately. at first i thought this would be a hardware problem or the ac adaptor itself, but then i found that even when the ac adaptor is plugged in, if it's in safe mode or should i say if it's not in WINDOW mode, it won't crash. i check ad test in safe mode, but still dont know why, my conclusion for now is something (software, programme) that are activate when in window mode are preventing/rejecting the ac adaptor.
and its quite obvious, but without the ac adaptor, i can run window mode normally. please if anyone knw what happen to my laptop please help.

Good morning, I purchased a T440s with win7 Pro.  When I received the laptop I immediately did a fresh install of Win7 because of all the Lenovo bloatware.  Specs: i5; 8gb ram; 256gb SSD; win7 pro I began using the laptop and soon ran into three issues: (1) when I enter sleep mode, the computer "goes to sleep."  About 2-3 seconds later, it kicks back on by itself and starts up at the user log-in screen, at which point it just crashes.  (2) when I plug in the power cord, it just crashes.  No boot to log-in screen.  This happens in windows, and also while in BIOS... so it seems like it's a hardware problem? (3) this isn't a huge deal but I can't tell if it's a symptom of the problem: the computer doesn't restart on its own-- it only shuts down.  Even if you choose "restart" it doesn't automatically cycle back into start-up mode, it just shuts down and you have to manually hit the power button.  So weird. I've done about 5+ hours of research and trial/error, with probably 4 fresh Windows installs.  My experimentation thus far has pretty much resulted in the probability that it is a power issue (power management, something not waking up from sleep, etc.).  It's possible there's a hardware issue, but I see no indication of that...  Here are things I've tried (all on battery and plugged in): fresh install with video drivers from lenovo support sitefresh install with video d... My computer keeps crashing with no error message or anything like that. It only ever happens when im online, so im not sure if its a hardwear issue or not, but the hard drive was new out of the box, installed windows XP sp2 home, then got on and went to msn to download the messenger and it started. so i doubt its a virus. the only thing i did before that after installing windows is instal my wireless reciever made by Buffalo, Number is 870718 G, i tried reinstalling windows, with a new disk and it did the same thing, so im assuming its a hardwear problem. i put everything i can think of in my profile about whats in the computer, but a friend built it, so im not 100% sure about anything not stated. also, about a week after i got it set up the mouse started acting up. it jumps around the screen and likes to click twice every time i single click. it dosnt seem to be any settings that are wrong, and ive tried 3 diffrent mice.
any idea what might be wrong?

Answer:computer crash warning

You story is hard to follow. Many Internet Service Providers do require a password to start the point to point protocol. But once established, the hardware does the authentication. Having the user use a password does little nor nothing to prevent scampers and com artists from trying to pull one over on you.As a rule, beware of any phone call, e-mail or other communication that tells you do something other contrary to what instruction you already received. If in doubt, tell them you are busy at the moment, but leave the 800 number (tool free)  so you can  will call back. That will stop them. With the 800 number you can find out who they really are. They don't like that. Unless it is a real company.

I'm having this problem where my computer occasionally shuts itself off shortly after hitting the desktop. My monitor just goes to standby mode - no blue screen that I could tell. I haven't installed anything new.

My whole computer is still running, fans, LEDs everything. It's as if the computer just decided to go to standby mode. I can't wake it either. I can't tell if the computer is actually on. It's not my monitor - it's occurred with other monitors as well.

I?m a member of the IT department in a relatively small company. Earlier last week, one of my users reported a strange error to me. I have never encountered this before. The problem he described is detailed further below. We have several of this model laptop; this is the first one to give us any problems.

System Information:Lenovo ThinkPad T420s
Model #: 4170CTO
OS: Windows 7 Professional 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601 (64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5-2540M (CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2 Cores)
Spec Sheet:
? The laptop locks up during normal usage, typically when running a Microsoft program such as Word or Excel. When this happens, it generally forces the program closed, resulting in loss of work.
? On 6/28/12 the computer forced a shut-down without warning. After rebooting, the machine gave an error message saying something along the lines of ?Not enough resources? to load the user profile. The message requests logging on with a user account which has been used previously on the laptop, even though the account(s) being tried have all logged on before. In order to log in again the machine had to be rebooted several times.
? Computer has yet to provide a blue screen error.I do have access to the Event Log, if it would be of any help. However, I could not find any errors associated with the log-on message we received. I am running windows xp with athlon 2900+ cpu, 2Gig ram. I recently replaced a cpu fan and since then my comp periodically crashes with a warning buzzer that sounds like an ambulance I think it may be telling me my system is over heating but not sure why. Can please help. Do you have an idea of what might be going on before I fry my chip.

Answer:Computer crash with warning buzzer

You'll have to go into the BIOS and check the temperatures of the CPU chip to see if you're overheating or not, check those and report back and we'll see if it's overheating or not, also for safe practice you might check to see for dust buildup inside the computer. Cleaning that might help a bit.

Just rebooted laptop and got this on black screen
Failure predicted on hard disc
Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disc. A failure may be imminent
Press F1 to continue
I do all my scans regularly and have no idea why this has happened.
I pressed F1 and PC seems to work ok apart from a similar message popping up occasionally without the black screen.
Fortunately I back up regularly.
Is there anything I can do apart from replacing the hard drive ?
Thankyou for any advice

Answer:Imminent PC crash warning message

This may indicate that your hard drive may be about to fail and is advising you to back up all your files onto an external device. If your hard drive fails and you have not backed up your files you will loose them.

i am trying to setup alert by email on specific hardware or system events. server is having Windows Server 2008 R2 OS
I see following events are logged on to Event Log by sources:
Power-On (source: Kernel-General, Event ID: 12, Level: Information)

Improper Power-Off/Shut-down (source: EventLog, Event ID: 6008, Level: Error)
Improper Power-Off/Shut-down (source: Kernel-Power, Event ID: 41, Level: Critical)
Proper Power-Off/Shut-down (source: Kernel-General, Event ID: 13, Level: Information)

OS Crash / Blue-screen (source: BugCheck, Event ID: 1001, Level: Error)
I had been trying to set alert by email on these events, and since its pretty easy to setup by Scheduled Task manager or directly attaching task for certain events on Event Viewer. However none of these works. I guess the reason may be the Task Scheduler
service always starts after all those events are logged on to Event-Log, because Event Log service always starts first.
I even tried setting-up alert in Performance Monitor, by creating a User Defined Data Collector Set, use System Up-time as performance counter and set an alert to send email when it reaches below 120 seconds. however this didn't work too. the data collector
set is not started when server is rebooted.
I will appreciate if someone can advise on the solution by using Windows Server 2008 R2 built-in functionalities and not using any third-party tools.
Thanks and have a great day!

Answer:Virus Warning clean computer b4 crash

Hi all,

I'm new, though unfortunately for me, this problem is not, so hopefully someone here can help.

I have a custom-built PC I assembled nearly 3 years ago now. I've had some small issues with it on and off, though I've never really been able to diagnose these probs (i.e. PC restarts fine but won't cold boot without manually switching PSU off and on again, etc.).

Recently, I purchased Dragon Age: Origins and a new problem has appeared. The computer will randomly crash in the middle of the game. It'll run fine for hours before or after playing, but while playing, it'll only last a few minutes to an hour and a half at most before completely crashing.

I've never gotten an error message and there doesn't seem to be any error log for these crashes.

I though it might be a faulty vid card (I have dual EVGA nVidia 8800GTS in SLI) so I removed one card and turned off SLI, but the problem is still there.
I've turned graphics way down on the game, but no success. I also thought the one fewer GPU might help if it was a heat issue (the system tends to run hot, approx 60C) but it still crashes.

Hopefully someone on here might have a clue with the attached info (which I think should be what is usually asked for). Thanks!

My supervisor and a coworker has experienced this problem, I have not. The issue is that it seems that Excel 2010 sometimes crashes by closing without warning, and when Excel is re-opened, there are no Recovery Files. I was wondering if anyone had similar experience and if you had any ideas what could be causing it:

I was just finishing up my review of (something work related) and had most of the files open. I had saved all but cells 17 and 18. I also had added a sheet to the workbook I use to compare iterations that was highlighting the changes I made. In total, I had 24 excel workbooks open, most from (a project) folder but a couple from a folder on my C drive. Suddenly, all the excel workbooks were gone – no error message, no delay on the monitor. I hit the “save” button with cell18 in the current view and then the only thing left on the ribbon at the bottom of my screen was my Inbox, an open email, and three open folders. Any guess on what happened? I have re-opened a couple of the (project) files and there are no “recovered” file messages. Is the a quirk of Office 2010?

My T410 (with Optimus NVS 3100m) always crashes without any warning, not even a blue screen.  No memory dumps, either. There doesn't seem to be any pattern, either. I assume it's the video card, but how do I find out what is really going on and fix it?

Ok first was running a old machine with windows 8.1, mobo died (sata controller packed it in) got a new machine only thing transfered over from old machine was HD's(1 1tb(primary), 2 350gb) machine is ga78lmt usb3, fx6300 processor, 16 gb (8x2) ram, NVidia ga750ti gc. since the switch over the new machine will restart itself or crash programs with no warning tried upgrading to 10 same results checking event viewer will mostly say usb3 driver crash but also getting memory errors and hd errors, never at the same time, blue screens will mention memory management and system thread problems.
When I do the msdiag it finds nothing wrong with the memory sticks when I do defrag it finds nothing wrong with the hd's,
crashes will mostly happen when running a graphic intensive program.
tried running one stick of ram at a time, running on board graphics, running 1 hd, still same results.
I am baffled by this problem any help would be appreciated.

Question: Capacitors

Do capacitors always bulge when bad? Looking at the capacitors In my lcd, they all appear flat with no leakage. Does that mean they are good?

Normal capacitor is indented, bad capacitors are not.
You'll notice right away if a capacitor is bad is when they begin to swell up and bulge out with white residue.

These are a few examples of what bad capacitors can do:

1) Computer won't turn on
2) No display
3) Random bluescreens
4) Lockups

Question: Capacitors

I have a few questions about some of the capacitors on one of my older mobos. My old Amd754 mobo appears to have four 6.3v 3300uF 10x23mm Capacitors next to the CPU all clustered together in a square. From what I have read these capacitors are the VRMs. 3 of 4 capacitors are raised at the top and I'm going to solder some new ones. However, just to be safe should I also replace the 4th? It doesn't appear to be raised yet. As cheap as a new mobo might be, soldering new caps are even cheaper and I know how to solder.

The motherboard is a Biostar K8T800-A7A and it runs a overclocked A64 cpu.

Motherboards that develop bad caps tend to have been built with defective batches of caps or the chemical stuff inside them, so yes, it would probably be best
to do all the similar caps.

You could make the point also, that manufacturers building the boards, used many of the components from the same plants so they may develop bad caps in lots of areas of the board. I have some that have as few as one or two, and then some have 11 or 12 puffed up. I've never replaced any caps but there are some forums where you can find lots of folks who have: (<<<<< a Macintosh info site) (<<<< lots of videos on the subject)

Recently my T430s has decided to let the batery drain to zero and switch off without shutdown without warning. This happens at about 20% power left. I have Power Manager 6 installed on windows 7. I'm unsure how PM6 communicates with Windows 7 power options but that is set at critical battery level 6% action shutdown. Low battery level 10% notification on, action sleep, reserve batter 3%. The machine never goes to sleep nor does it give a warning it goes directly to unplug. How does PM6 and Windows Power Options work together? How can I specify the T430 to go to sleep at low batteryHow can I tell the T430 to warn about low battery?   regards

Answer:power cut without warning

This is known issue. Update your Batt firmware using Lenovo tools or contact your Lenovo dealer for battery replacement.

Have 3 capacitors on this mother board that are bulged (not leaking). They are next to processor. My last computer had this same problem. I don't know if this was something that happened when it died. It blew the pwr. supply. Apparently did something to the mobo. No other physical signs (no burn tracks or leaking from caps). My ? is, is this usually the sign of the mobo being on the way out ? And would replacing a pwr. supply, before it decides to blow possibly prevent demise of mobo ?

The bulging capacitors can be a sign they're about to go,changing them is a job for someone who is a skilled solderer and has a working knowledge of electronics. The bulging capacitors are the cause of a symptom though and that is an unstable computer,if a computer is stable and working I would not recommend the capacitors be changed or any action be taken.

I'm little confused by the rest of your post,I'll assume what your tryna say though and answer.

Unless the power supply is seriously out of spec changing a working power supply for a working power supply offers little to no advantage, capacitors are rated at a voltage higher than what they're used for often 16v-35v when working at 12v so if the 12V rail is at 12.4V it may shorten the lifespan of the capacitor as opposed to running at 12V but not so significantly it warrants a new power supply as they are designed to run at that voltage.

Was at a computer store recently and overheard a Tech tell a customer in effect that the Motherboard wasn't going to last very long -- maybe couple months -- because "some capacitors are swollen and will fail pretty quick."
Is there such a thing? I haven't came across the ternm before.

How do capacitors work in an accelerometer?
the google definition says "Capacitive accelerometers (vibration sensors) sense a change in electrical capacitance, with respect to acceleration, to vary the output of an energized circuit. The sensing element consists of two parallel plate capacitors acting in a differential mode"
Can someone put this into simple terms for me since im not that good with Physics.

My old Compaq Celeron 500MHz decided to blow...I use that comp for a home file and HTTP server, so I'm trying to get it working again. It won't boot or post or anything, the HDD spins up, PSU fan comes on, and power LED, but the CPU fan (on the motherboard) doesn't come on and the CPU doesn't heat up. Holding the button for 4 seconds does nothing. It comes on and boots up at random, works for a while, then randomly shuts off or reboots. I took it apart and the only thing I can see that looks like a problem is one of the capacitors near the PSU input. There are three 1000uf, 10v capacitors. One of them is bulged up and the metal cover is pushed almost all the way off the rubber base. I'm thinking it is probably the source of the problem, so I want to replace it, but I can't seem to find 1000uf, 10v capacitors anywhere.

Will a different voltage work, or does it have to be 10v? I have some 1000uf, 50v's lying around, but that doesn't sound like a good thing to put in a computer needing 10v.

Question: Mobo capacitors

Hi,My mobo is about 2 years old and looks in good condition all over but I'm wondering about the way one of the capacitors by the RAM sticks sticks out the back. None of them are bulging, leaking or in any way malformed. This one though has the usual two wires sticking through the mobo but they seem to join on the underside in a v-shape, instead of being parallel. They look like they've always been that way and maybe even fixed in that position. None of the others do this and I was wondering if it could cause the mobo to short or any other issues.Thanks.

Question: Swollen capacitors

Whether or not this has been gone over or not:

Some random reboots are caused by swollen capacitors I have had alot of computers do the random reboot and one of the first things i check is the motherboard.

Answer:Swollen capacitors

If the capacitors on the mobo are bursting, then that mobo's life is over.

Question: Missing Capacitors

I just got my XFX 9800 GT in the mail and apparently it's missing three capacitors to the right of the fan. I've compared my card to pictures on TigerDirect and Newegg and they all show that the card has three more capacitors than it actually has. What should I do? Is this normal? What will happen if I put it in my computer? Will it function properly? Thank you.

Answer:Missing Capacitors

Exactly which model do you have?

It could either be missing capacitors or it could just be a different PCB layout that doesn't need what you see pictured online.

Question: Blown Capacitors

Well, not blown like in "BAM", but oozing out electrolyte. Almost all of those on the mobo are encrusted with it.
Started with only one of them I assume I broke during clean-up. I shoved it just a bit and it popped, already. Bad product?

Symptoms (I guess):
I need a dozen boots until XP is running. All of those things happen at random:
* not even POSTing, but automatically rebooting
* the above, but then crashing to a bluescreen
* crashing during XP loading screen (bluescreen, reboot or complete freeze)
* while rebooting, asking for normal windows start or safe mode, taking normal there's a checkdisk scan of drives D and E (nothing unusual, I know), then anything of the above can happen
* skipping the check, ditto

Bluescreen usually says something like this:
* page fault in non-paged area
* IRQL something error
* nothing (just STOP error codes)
* something else (I don't pay attention any more...)

Linux doesn't run any more at all (Suse 9.0 crash message). If XP is running it usually doesn't crash (sometimes it does, though) and a restart is going through with no problem.

I can be fairly certain that there's a connection between the cracked capacitors and this booting behaviour, right?

A few more questions:
1) Is this unhealthy? For me, I mean. I guess not, but it can't hurt to ask.
2) Can you recommend any tools to measure temperature in various hardware and the case? I'm not sure, perhaps they have ... Read more

Answer:Blown Capacitors

1) Don't use the motherboard anymore. The capacitor popped for a reason, which I'll explain below
2) You can damage components running without those caps. They assist in a variety of things inlcuding voltage stability.

Capacitors are designed to pop like that when they are pushed too far, or simply begin to wear down over time. If you notice, there is an X carved into the top of other capacitors of that type. It's intended to make capacitor pop and stop working, making it obvious it needs repair.

However, you're in luck. With just a few dollars and only a minor bit of saudering you can replace those capacitors.

You'll need to get capacitors of the same voltage and capacitance of the one(s) that popped.

Do you have a saudering iron and some sauder? If so you can heat up the contacts on the bottom of the board and slide the old capacitor out, replace it, ensuring to get the polarity correct, and apply a bit of sauder to the bottom of the board again to secure it in place.

The capacitors won't run you more than $1.

If you don't have a saudering iron, you might be able to take your board to a PC repair shop or an electrician and have them do it, or see if you can borrow one. The skill level needed to it is minimal.

I was wondering what the difference was between the solid state capacitors that are exclusively marketed on newer motherboards and the older electrolytic capacitors. I know that the electrolytic ones are volatile, lose charge capacity over time when exposed to heat and have less charge capacity when cold. They are prone to leakage and such but im wondering which if not all of these problems a solid state capacitor would eliminate.
