C50 A 17Q Windows 8.1 headphone jack delivers to right speaker only

Question: C50 A 17Q Windows 8.1 headphone jack delivers to right speaker only

On my C50 the sound is fine through the laptop speakers but when I plug in a jack to the headphone socket the sound only comes out through the right speaker. When you do a test of the IDTspeaker, you can hear both left and right sounds but both come from the right speaker (like its in mono). There is no headphone device appearing in the sound playback devices - looking at some fora it looks like there should be. I have reinstalled the idt driver from Toshiba site (2014). I have also used windows to get the latest sound driver but none of this helps. it did work before and seems to have gone wrong after a windows 8 update. Can anyone help please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Alright, so here's the problem. I just recently got this computer and plugged it into the VGA port and the sound wouldn't work. I plugged Logitech External Speakers into it and the computer didn't even acknowledge that it was there. I plugged in Headphones to see if those worked and they didn't aswell. I asked the guy who I got the computer from and he said that it (sound) would work when plugged in using HDMI. So I did that and the sound does work, but only through the TV speakers. It still doesn't acknowledge the speakers or the headphone s when plugged in. So I wen t and grabbed some other speakers I had and tried those and It still didn't recognize the speaker. My question is: How Do I Get My Computer To Recognize My Speakers? Any help would be much appreiciated.

I had to have the hard drive replaced in my computer due to a defect in the drive. Ever since the hard drive was replaced, the head phone plug-in that is on the face of the tower does not work, but the speaker plug-in that is located in the back of the tower, works just fine.

I cannot figure out what is wrong. The audio driver installed for my system was obtained from the Dell website along with the majority of my other drivers.
Any help would be great.

I have a 2.1 speaker set attached to my laptop that does not have its own headphone jack. So in order to listen to headphones I have to unplug the 2.1 from the headphone jack and plug in the headphones. I tried a cheap splitter but that didn't sound good.

What I would like is something that had two jacks that allowed me to keep the 2.1 plugged in all the time in one jack and when I want to use the headphones I could just plug them into the other jack. I would like both jacks whether used together or solo to have the same sound quality as a single jack... with no degradation in sound.

Lastly, I would like to be able to mute the 2.1 (using volume control on the speaker set) and still get great controllable sound out of the jack that have the headphones plugged in.

Is there something like that? Thanks.

Hello I've bought my Lenovo laptop about half a year ago. From the very beginning the headphone audio jack had some problems, there would be no sound when headphones are plugged in, however restarting the laptop usually helped. I have not had this problem for a few months until now. When I plug in headphones, no sound comes out and restarting the computer does not help. Furthermore, the sound of the laptop speakers seems to be a big different than it normally used to be - the sound is a bit lower and so to say ''dimmer''. Please let me know I could fix it.

I'm using windows 1064-bit. Hope anybody out there can help me out. thanks.

Answer:Speaker/headphone/audio jack problem

Hi, Omarattia  ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.

Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

Answer:whats the speaker headphone jack on the cd drive??

its analogue sound for cd's. its normally not used. in fact i think its been sort of obsolete since windows 98. there is an option somewhere in media player to disable digital sound for cd's or something along those lines which will probably allow you to use headphones on the front jack

Answer:Speaker/headphone/audio jack problem

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

I'm guessing that it's probably just a compatibility issue... or just how it is, but I'm curious:

I updated my laptop from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro a while back. It started out as just a minor inconvenience, but it's getting to be very annoying. When I plug in my external speakers (via the headphone jack) or my headphones, Windows doesn't automatically switch the sound output to the headphone jack. I have to manually switch it ("Manage Audio Devices"). The same is true for the reverse, when I unplug my headphones.

Is there any way around this, or is it likely an issue with the compatibility of my sound card?

Please and thank you!

Answer:Headphone jack/on board speaker issue

Do you have the correct Windows 7 drivers for your Audio system? The XP drivers are not compatible and you need at a minimum Vista drivers as Vista and Windows 7 handle sound functions differently than XP.

On most newer "HD Audio" systems the jack is "auto sensing" and switches "logically". On many older PC systems that is a mechanical function with the jack.

Answer:Audio combo jack vs headphone/earphone with mic and speaker connector

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.

Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

Hello, Something is stuck inside my headphone jack (really no idea what, it looks like some amber colored resin) This caused no problems until i tried to stick my headphones in (because i didn't know there was something else inside)Now the little switch inside is activated and i can't use my normal speakers anymore. Pulling the thing out is not possible it really seems glued inside, i can remove small parts of it by scratching with a screwdriver but i see no way to remove it without a drill. I googled for ways to shut off the port so i can revert back to the normal speakers (i really don't care about losing the headphone jack, i normally only use speaker sound) It seems the installed realtek drivers allow no option to deactivate it. I tried reinstalling the realtek driver, changed registry option "EnableDynamicDevices" but didnt find the more promising "ForceDisableJD".  The Windows driver also didn't help and i didn't find any other drivers available for this notebook. The BIOS also didn't have any option for this (but maybe i'm just bad at finding it) Is there any way to disable the port on the software side or a way to disconnect the hardware? I have soldering equipment here. I really don't care for a clean solution anymore, just hoping for a way to get the sound. Thanks for your help. Edit: whoops almost forgot the essentials: this is a lenovo z510 with win7 64bit that was not pre-installed (bought without OS)

Hello Jimco,
I have a Dell 5548 with a 1080p touch screen, Core i5 &12GB of Ram. After updating to windows 10 I have had a number of issues with this laptop.
1)The most annoying of all is that the speaker volume fluctuates from high to low at any given setting which is extremely frustrating. One time its loud then all of a sudden it reduces then a few seconds later its up again. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue as this didn't happen on windows 8.1?
2)The Headphone Jack is too tight. If I try too insert any earphones or headphones it will go in to a certain degree then i have to apply force but it still wont go in. If i try to apply more force it seems that it will break as there is a creaking sound. sound from the speakers isn't fine and i cant even use earphones :(
3) My laptop has a real sense camera and it just stops using its infrared sensors or depth sensors when setting up windows hello. It tells me to place my face in the centre of the screen and then no response even though i can see what the webcam is showing me.
I hope you can answer my questions as it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Also, my speaker symbol on the task bar shows a "cross" sign with "no audio output installed" displaying when I hover on the speaker icon.
Please I need help. have tried all options i can think of including driver updates.
One more thing, the sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.

Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

Hello,

I just purchased a new notebook, and I have a bit of a problem. When I plug headphones into the side headphone jack, the sound quality is downright terrible. Very shortly I noticed that it didn't sound as good/decent as my older notebook.

The speakers seem to sound fine, well you know - as good as laptops can sound.

Right now I have two notebooks side by side:
a friends Samsung Series 3 (NP300E5C), with Windows 8 (upgraded from W7) / Microsoft High Definition audio
my Toshiba L50 Windows 8 / Realteck High Definition

I dont have my older notebook anymore, but I do remember it sounding better. Comparing this Toshiba to the Samsung (both sitting on the desk side-by-side), the Toshiba sounds a little better through the speakers, but there is no comparison with the headphone - The Samsung is pretty decent while the Toshiba makes me cry.

Now granted, I'm not expecting a symphony, but if I cant solve this I'm going to have to sell the Toshiba.

I've tried uninstalling Realtek, but I couldn't get the sound to work.
Re-installing Realtek solved nothing

One thing I noticed, there is no 'headphone' icon in the device manager (Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound / or simply right click the audio icon in the taskbar). Are the headphones not high definition or something?

3.  Set the headphone as communication device (see image below).

Also please let me know if you can hear also the sound from the headphone itself

how can i connect both a microphone & a headphone ?

Answer:Laptop with combined mic/headphone jack, how to connect both mic & headphone ?

I haven't used one that had the port as a combined unit but I would assume you would need a headphone set with mic that has combined wiring, such as sets used for cell phones and such. You can also purchase an adapter that will split the port into 2 ports for mic and headphones.
Hope that gives you an idea

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Any help appreci... Read more

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

I have Lenovo 3000 Y410 laptop having Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. Realtek HD Audio latest driver is installed. But from the last 3 days, when I connect headphone through laptop, following things happen : -
1) Headphone connected popup doesn't show up.
2) Mic of Headphone connected pop shows up.

3) When I play video, sound coming from both headphone & laptop speakers.
4) When I mute sound by muting sound icon in taskbar, sound then comes only from headphone.

What I have tried?
1) Installed new Realtek HD Audio Manager.
2) Installed OS again.
3) Tried to change settings in Realtek Hd Audio Manager. But Nothing changes.

When I input headphone & mic jacks into laptop, & then check Realtek HD Audio Manager. The following image shows this : -

The green in realtek hd audio manager is for headphone & red is for mic. In the image, it is shown that headphone not connected & mic connected. But even headphone not connected shows up, sound coming form headphone.

I want to get sound from only headphone when headphone is connected. Is this a hardware problem ?

Please help....

Answer:Sound coming from both headphone & speaker but headphone is not detect

My Realtek HD Audio Manager has more options than yours.

Also, I notice you only have the microphone in the Recording Section of the Sound Panel. RIGHT click in an empty space in that Panel and then LEFT click Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. The Stereo Mix should be shown and you can enable that and make it the default Recording device.

Where did you get the RealTek driver that you installed? If you are not using the Lenovo supplied sound driver, get that and install it as a first step. I have a Lenovo Laptop and it has Stereo Mix and other functions. I haven't looked at the RealTek HD manager so I'm not sure what all it shows.

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

No it should go in. We have been getting reports of tight jacks. Don't know if it's a quality control issue. Try some different ones and insert more firmly than normally.
If none will go in all the way, but you do hear the audio, I wouldn't be too concerned. If not getting audio (the selection popup does not appear) because it won't go in, then contact tech support or send it back.

This seems to be a pretty common problem. I'm working on my friends computer, because his headphone jack isn't working.
He has an Acer Aspire M, with a third-gen i5, 6GB DDR3, Windows 8 64bit, and a Realtek card.

He had been using headphones in the side jack, and they were working fine, but yesterday he plugged them in and they weren't recognized by Windows 8. I checked the playback devices in the control panel, and the default speakers is only reading one internal jack, no external jack. The headphones do not show up in the playback devices list. I installed the latest Realtek codecs, tried uninstalling the devices from the device manager, and checked in the Realtek control panel. Nothing seems to be working. I tried several sets of headphones in the jack, and it is the same deal. I did test his headphones in my computer, and they work perfectly.

I'm kinda at a loss for this...which is sad because I have my CompTIA A+. But any help is greatly appreciated.

right click anywhere in the playback tab and select show disbaled deives and show disconnected devices

If its disabled, then re-enable it

if its disconnected then plug in your headphones and see if it changes..

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!
Sebastian

Standard headphone that fits iPhone and other laptops will not plug all the way into jack.  Audio continues to come from speakers.  I'm finding many others across boards that have this same issue.  HP says 3.5 will fit but it does not.

Answer:headphone jack broken off in headphone plug in

TOMMYSS,
If you purchased complete care from Dell you can call into Dell Alienware Support at 1 (877) 330-9732. If you did not you can possibly take it back to the store you purchased it from to see if they can help you. You can also try removing it yourself. Just make sure that it is unplugged before attempting to remove it.

Hi @chadhogan121 Welcome to the HP Support Community! I saw your post regarding the problems with sound only coming out on one side of the headphones. I will be happy to help you with that. Have you tried a different set of headphones to see if the same thing happens? This HP document No Sound from Speaker will show you how to use the built-in Windows troubleshooter. Give that a try.

I just got a Lenovo N585, and I've got to say it's one confusing laptop, at least for me. Well I tried plugging in my headphones into the head phone jack, and its works externally, but there is no sound coming out of my head phones. I am wondering if theres some program I have to run to make it work correctly. Also why is there not a microphone jack?

Answer:No microphone jack and my headphone jack isn't working. N858

Hi Awkwardness2,

Thanks for posting and Welcome to Lenovo Community,

the machine has combo audio jack ,which is 1 socket for the speakers and the microphone
you need to buy a new headphone with combo audio jack or get an adapter to fix this issue

let me know if that fix the issue or not

My speakers on my Yoga 2 Pro work fine.  Today, I plugged in headphones and only sound came through the right ear side.  I checked the headphones themselves with my phone and they worked fine.  I got earbuds out to test them.  The earbuds had sound only coming out on the left side.  Again, tested the earbuds with my phone and they worked fine.  It is the headphone jack in the Yoga Pro for sure.  Suggestions?

Hello -

This issue has been going on for a while now. It started out sporadically, but has gotten worse. The problem I am having is with my headphones. Specifically, they no longer work in Windows 7...

Now, before you jump to "Your headhones are probably bad" or "you jack has gone bad", I can absolutely assure you they are fine. I dual boot my system..Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux. This issue has never once happened in Ubuntu and my headphones work great. So I can say beyond doubt, it's a Windows issue.

When I plug them in, Windows kills the speakers. but no sound in headphones. I have uninstalled the drivers and let Windows install it's generic drivers. Same problem. So I have uninstalled the drivers, and ran the driver package from HP that is the IDT drivers for my model. Same issue. So it HAS to be something in Windows itself, since I have this issue with multiple drivers.

With the IDT drivers installed, I right click my speaker and go to playback devices. The headphone are listed as communications headphones, but will not allow me to set as default. (This is the most common fix I found on google...no joy...). With the Windows generic "High Definition Audio Device" drivers, the headphones do not show up as a playback device. In both cases, the system detects when the headphone are plugged in and disables the speakers.

Setup is an HP Probook 4530s, running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium / Ubuntu 12.04 x64

Any ideas? I am really annoyed... Read more

I have read a number of threads on this issue. My HP running windows 8.1 with IDT High Definition Audio CODEC consistently tells me that my headphones are unplugged in both the front and back audio ports of my desktop. I thought getting windows 8.1 on my new desktop would enable me to have audio. Apparently not so far.

I don't know what to do that I haven't done, but I'm not some computer tech guy.

I restarted the computer. I reinstalled the IDT drivers. I checked that they were up to date. I tried the troubleshooting method through windows that kept telling me that the headphones/speakers were unplugged. Okay, that's not true. The headphones work. Devise manager had no yellow exclamation marks.

So what's left to do? Buy windows 7 for $100 and reinstall it on this computer to so I can have sound and an operating system that's not infuriating?

I don't think this is due to some virus I managed to get in record time with minimal use of this computer. So what's next to do? Anything? I'm pretty sure I'm going to need buy windows 7 on ebay.

Advice?

Answer:headphone jack says it's unplugged in windows 8.1

The windows troubleshoot method also told me that there was nothing else wrong that they could detect other than my headphones not being plugged in, in case that wasn't evident from what I wrote above.

I also don't have realtek or whatever that thing is that gets referenced when people post about this problem.

Ok so I finished my new PC, one of the main new parts in the motherboard, a Biostar hifi a85s3.  my older gtx 550 ti, and an AMD APU.  I have everything running well on it (this is posted from said PC) except for I can't get the sound on.  I installed realtek HD audio manager (came on the disk with the mobo) and tried clearing the CMOS afterwards, but windows troubleshooting just says that nothing is plugged in.  I have tried the audio ports on the board, as well as the ones hooked up on the front of the case.  Other than that I have no idea what's causing this or what to do about it.

Answer:Headphone/speaker does not appear to be plugged in to windows 7

I'd disconnect the front panel audio cable from location in attached pic and then see if the ports on the motherboard respond to headset attached to the rear of the computer. Some cases come with 2 plugs, one with a loop and the other without a loop. If you get your audio to respond when front panel audio cable is removed then, you know where the problem is, but if the problem remains then it could be a defective board. With Windows 7, I ran into driver feature issues with Windows 7 on a Biostar MCP6PB M2+, but this board was manufactured for 2000/XP/Vista. My problems with audio are that sound works fine but I have no microphone as well as although the HD Audio Panel that use to display on the screen when a device was added to allow selection for audio system or headset to be selected as the device that is plugged in no longer pops up when this motherboard is running on Windows 7. When it use to run on XP prior using the driver software off the CD that came with the motherboard everything worked including microphone. Biostar has no extended support for this board for Win 7 so I figured out which chipset I had for audio and manually installed a Windows 7 driver and this which should have fixed the microphone port, but it didnt.I installed the Windows XP hard drive back into this system and the MIC works still so the port isnt bad. Left the hard drive in there in case I ever need to run Windows XP, however I am running Windows 7   99.9% of the time. To fix my MIC... Read more

I have had Windows 8 since last November or December and only until recently I have had problems with the headphone jack. My laptop is Dual boot between Linux and Windows 8. Linux was put on after the Windows 8. I know there isn't anything physically wrong with the jack itself, because the headphone jack works perfectly fine in linux. I have tried to search the internet for solutions and I haven't found anything that is helpful, so I have come here.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron N5110 that came with Windows 7. I had a few problems with drivers when I first put Windows 8 on the laptop. The display driver needed an update, but that was easily fixable. I don't think that this is a driver update problem because the headphone jack DID work, just recently has it stopped working.
I have tried to go into the device manager and search for driver updates, nothing. I am attaching link to a picture of my device manager incase it is helpful:

Hi all,        I've recently got a T420 4180A32 (Conexant CX20672) and the headphone jack doesn't work under Windows 7. It works when I boot (natively) into Ubuntu, but obviously when I run a Virtual Machine into Ubuntu through Windows, it doesn't work either. I have: - Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver version that came installed.- Installed,  Uninstalled and reinstalled a newer driver version.- Uninstalled the old driver and installed the new one.- Reverted to using the generic High Definition Audio driver. The speakers work fine but again, headphone jack doesn't.- Established that it obviously isn't a hardware problem.- Uninstalled then reinstalled DirectX- Tried various headphones on the off chance that they were the problem. They weren't. I haven't: - Done a full reinstall of windows 7 (although I might)- Tried Windows 8, although again, I might as I have an unused licence for it and I really want my headphones to work. That's about all the info I can give. Besides this problem, the laptop runs great! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey guys, I've been looking everywhere for a solution to this: Headphones Working Fine, Mics aren't...But totally no luck. I can see that a lot of people are having this problem and posting it on various forums, without any valid solutions or workarounds.
The Problem: Asus Laptop with Windows 8.1 with only one audio input won't read any external Headphone's MIC.
Description:
1. The Internal MIC works fine and it works everytime even when I plug in an external one.
2. When I plug in external headphone (Headphone's got 2 jacks, black which is for sound and red which is for recording) into the Only ONE audio input there is, Windows gives a popup with its current Audio devices plugged in but it just wont read the MIC. This is what pops up when I plug in the external MIC or headphone.

3. Now, When I go to the lower right corner and select Recording Devices from the sound panel, it won't show any external or added device when I plug in the new device. It would just show my internal MIC and something called Stereo MIX, but not my Microphone.

4. Okay, Now when I check Device Manager, and try to update all the Realtek Audio drivers it would just say "everything is latest with latest drivers installed", which is obvious since Windows 8.1 has bundled everything with my laptop.

5. Now you must be thinking of a solution like since my headphone has 2 wires (the red and the black), why not use a Audio Splitter which looks something like this... , I even bought ... Read more

Answer:Windows Won't recognize Combo Mic/Headphone Jack

The splitter you show will not work with a PC. Its designed for an iPhone, PS4, etc. A PC plug is only Tip, Ring and Sleeve. The one you show is Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve. A PC microphone requires +5VDC, which is on the Ring connection to work.

Usually, PC's with only one jack, can be either but not both.

I just got the phone, a little over a month ago. I had headphones plugged in to it before, but, now none of them work. Whenever I plug my headphones into the headphone hole, (I don't know the name for it, sorry.) the only audio that comes out is from the speaker in the phone instead of the headphones. I went to bed one night and they worked fine before I went to bed, the next morning nothing worked.

It is possible that some dirt might have gotten into the headphone jack. Please try blowing it out with compressed air and let us know if that helps.

Hi,

Thought I would start a new thread as noone seemed to post a definitive answer to the issue the poster was having regarding their headphones. I was having a similar problem while trying to watch Youtube, the speakers on my HP 625 were playing the sound even though I had my headphones plugged in. Not quite sure how I resolved it for myself, but when I opened up the IDT audio control panel within the 'hardware and sound' section of windows control panel, the speakers needed to be set to both default communication and default playback device. As well as making sure within this control panel that the headphones were selected for the appropriate jack, this solved the problem for me. I'm not sure if any of this stuff was different before I opened up the IDT control panel since I'd never opened it up before, but like I say the problem was solved so hopefully this may be of some help to anyone having the same problem.

Answer:Response to 'Windows 7 hates my headphone jack'

Thanks for the posting. FYI, I have the same problem on a Samsung laptop. It is intermittent, but the headphones sometimes quit working. I can get them to work via dual boot in Ubuntu just fine. My sound card is Realtek, and the headphones never show up there, so there is no default setting to change... it HAS to be an OS issue. Right?

I purchased  a  3.5mm 4 Position TRRS Male to 2x 3 Position TRS Female Headset Splitter Adapter for my hyperx cloud headphones to plug into my XPS 15, except the microphone isn't working when its plugged in.
When I plug them in a window comes up 'which device did you plug in?' Mic in, Line in, Dell Devices (lists random unknown devices to me), Headphones/headset - headphones medium, external speakers - external speakers medium. Are these details correct? should something about the microphone come up also? I go to sound options, recording and it's still using the microphone in the laptop.
I tested the headphones on another laptop without the jack and the microphone on the headset is working great. So it's either the splitter isn't doing it's job... or something to do with the laptop, any ideas?

Answer:XPS 15 9560 Headphone jack function as a mic jack?

Well for your case, the headSET option would be correct, since that means a device that offers both headphones (audio out) and a mic -- but note that you do apparently also have a Mic In option, though this would prevent audio output to the headphones.  However, if selecting the headset option isn't working, the issue with the TRRS "standard" is that it isn't a standard. The industry never agreed on which pins would be used for which connectors (Ground, Mic, Left Audio, Right Audio).  I think Samsung did it one way and Apple did it another, for example, and this of course causes interoperability issues.  So if choosing "headset" isn't working, it's probably because the XPS is expecting Option A and your splitter is wired for Option B.Theoretically, given that the audio chipset allows the pins to be dynamically assigned to various purposes depending on the device that's plugged in, it MIGHT be possible to have a "Headset" and "Headset (Alternate Mode)" device option in order to accommodate both TRRS configurations, but I seem to recall one of the TRRS implementation differences being where the Ground pin was placed, and maybe that pin can't be reassigned simply via software, which might explain the absence of such an option. Sorry!

Hi,

I am using a Tiny Media Notebook PIII, 700, Windows 98 SE. The computer is about four years old, and by now the headphone jack, which I use as my sound out port, is about fryed. The contacts have deteriated, and I can not replace the jack, as it is connected to the motherboard. Thus, aside from opting for a usb sound out, such as taking up the Soundblaster MP3+ option, I was wondering if I could reprogram the way in which sound is connected to external devices such as headphones. There are three jacks on the front of my computer: the headphone jack, the microphone jack and er I think it is a line out jack - the later jack which I have never used. Is there anyway I can swop/substitute the connection via the headphone jack say for the microphone jack or line out jack. Is there anyway I could do this?

Answer:Substituting the headphone jack with the microphone jack

No, afraid not. Each jack has it's own circuitry which provides for the needed resistance and other parameters. What you could do, if you got to the mobo itself, is to physically replace the jack but that's a major pain on a laptop.

You can try two things, one is to use alcohol and a Q-Tip to thoroughly clean the jack, then use a small bit of steel wool to sand inside with and then again with the alcohol and two, if the jack's worn too big for a tight connection, is to go to Radio Shack and buy a plug in adapter for that size jack. Some come with a slightly oversized male end and then you could plug into the female end and have a tight connection.

I'd like to plug my speakers into the back speaker jack and headphones to the front jack. I can't do this and have both work at the same time. I have a cheapo Insight speaker with a volume puck that lets me plug a headphone jack but then the speakers turn off.

Seems to me with front panel and rear panel jacks I should be able to do this but so far, I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Depends on the sound card you got. Realtek HD Audio Manager has a Device Advanced Settings option at top right, You can un-tick "Mute rear output ..." and see if it works.

I have an XPS 13 9350 running Windows 10 with Realtek audio.
When I insert headphones into the audio jack, the popup window asking to choose what type of device I inserted always appears behind all the open windows. It took me a while to figure this out. I thought the popup just wasn't working! But, it's consistent - and it always appears behind everything else - so it's the very last thing in the Alt-Tab list.
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix this?

Answer:XPS 13 9350 Headphone jack popup goes behind all open windows

That type of thing has been happening on Win 10,8 and maybe 7.  It is strange it seems to do that but I don't know of a way for a user to change that behavior.
You should have had an icon on the taskbar, possibly flashing or a different color, to alert you to the situation.

Since the Windows 10 anniversary update my headphone jack no longer works. It worked fine until then. Now, when I plug headphones in the system recognises the fact and a message pops up saying  'you have just plugged a device into the audio jack', but no sound comes through them. If I unplug them, the message is displayed that I have unplugged them. I have tried 3 different sets of earphones, so they are not the problem. Anyone else had this issue and come up with a solution?

I am set up for dual boot with the factory default Windows 7 partition, and Xubuntu 12.10. All software is fully updated, everything is generally working fine, and has been for quite some time. I spend most of my time on the Xubuntu side, but occasionally have to access Windows for some specific tasks.

I have a problem with no sound coming out of the headphone jack while in Windows 7. This was working initially, but somewhere along the line it stopped. It is not a hardware problem, because the headphones work just fine under Xubuntu. Under Windows I have reinstalled the Realtek drivers to no positive effect. The speakers cut out when you plug in the headphones, but there is no sound. I found a couple of mentions of this problem:

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-6...g-with-windows

Here it is suggested to remove the IDT Audio software. However, that is not installed on my system.

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-6...&cur=2&url=%2F

Here it is suggested to activate the headphones from the Control Panel->Sound window. However, only the internal speakers are listed. The headphones are not.

If anyone has seen this problem and can suggest something to investigate, I would be very grateful.

Regards.

Have you tried updating the drivers by going to the manufacture of your computer's website and downloading the drivers for your computer make and model?

Go to device manager by going to Start type in devmgmt.msc hit enter. Is there and read or yellow marks present? If so go to the manufacture of your computer website enter your service tag number or look up the model number including Windows 7 32bit or 64bit and download the appropriate drivers.

Hello, I'd like to know how to enable my front microphone/headphone entrance (the green and pink ones) on Windows 7

Thanks =)

Answer:How do I enable my front microphone and headphone jack with Windows 7?

The front panel should automatically be enabled, providing the cable for the front panel audio is connected to the motherboard, and you are using the correct sound driver. I assume you have Realtek as I used to have a P8Z77 LE Plus motherboard and it had Realtek on board audio.

On many PC cases there are two connections available for front panel audio, "HD Audio" and "AC 97". The HD Audio is preferred as it as some jack sensing functions that the older AC97 does not have.

I looked at the Realtek HD Audio Manager on my system and there is no option to enable or disable the front panel jacks. There is an option to mute or not mute the speakers when a headset is plugged in but that's all.

Even if you only have the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio drivers installed instead of the correct hardware drivers you should still get front panel headphone operation.

Try with another set of  headphones or test the headphones in another audio device. Also check the audio is set for analog.

If issue persists check if you have installed the Realtek software, open the Realtek HD Audio Manager , and check the " Disable front panel jack detection" option, under connector settings in the right side panel.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists.

Best Regards,
Poojitha.

It could be that the ALC665 uses the Realtek HD driver and not the AC'97, which you can find links to the latest version here,

Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version

if you haven't tried it yet.

Hello there, I noticed this happened awhile back on my X200 tablet but it's starting to annoy me now. One day my speakers decided not to work, but my headphones still work. I checked all my audio drivers and devices and even uninstalled and reinstalled them with this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS000763 Didn't work. I have included some images that may help: http://imgur.com/a/d2C3vAs you can see, it shows level changes as music is playing, but I hear no speaker sound! Help would be appreciated thanks!

Answer:No Speaker Sound, Headphone works, Windows 7, X200t

Did you make any changes to the laptop right before it quit working? Add or remove any programs? Did the laptop get dropped, jolted or banged?

This happened when I first upgraded from Vista to 7 32-bit last year, when the front output jack stopped working, and I ended up getting an extension cord to travel from the rear port.

Now I've upgraded again, and none of them work. I've got up to date Realtek codecs.

Any help is appreciated. I know I need to give more information, but it's 3am here and I can't for the life of me think what it should be.

Thanks in advance

Answer:(Realtek) Upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit, headphone jack stopped working

HEY, WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!
I tried everything, something isn't right here all of them don't fix my problem. I tried to restore to early time before I update it, it didn't work. I tried to follow every single instruction from the basic setting, still doesn't work. THIS IS WINDOWS FAULT, their market share is going down and they do little trick to make money. I tried to contact support and it says, "charge may apply." ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE OEM in my ****ing product ID.

My hardware is TOTALLY FINE, I believe yours too. WHY I know mine is fine? BECAUSE I USE UBUNTU ON THE SAME DEVICE! Open Source is your friend, you can trust it.

I have a Lenovo G780 laptop, and have had it for over a year, until 2 weeks back, everything was working fine. I started to have problems with the headphone jack where sound only came out of right ear.  Stereo Speakers were working fine. I made sure to go into Sound> Playback devices to make sure the Conexant Smart Audio was working right and the sound to L and R were balanced. I reinstalled the drivers (or what I found) and still it did not help. Now, a few days ago, the headphone jack stopped working completely (speakers still work). I retored my laptop to an earlier restor point (a month back when everything was working fine) and still no effect. Today when I tried to use the built in SD card reader, that I had used many times before, the card  reader would not detect it. I tried other Cards and they did not work either. I tried re installing the realtek drivers and got no effect. In device manager, whenever i insert the card, the wind refreshes, but nothing shows up in My Computer.I take good car of not laptop and there is no visible damage to any part of the laptop. I suspect the board inside is somehow damaged because the jack and card reader are located within a few mm of eachother. I have not yet tried factory restore, but all restore points do not fix the issue.

I got the headphones to the previous state somehow where sound comes out of right ear, but that's it.

After the windows 10 November update I am facing problem with audio device. I need to set default to switch between speaker and headphone. It means if the speaker is set as default then headphone will not work unless the headphone is set to default and vice versa.

So I have 150 OptiPlex 5050's, and a Windows 10 image deployed via WDS. I have the latest (8073) Realtek audio driver from the Dell site added to my WDS server, and when a machine is imaged the driver is installed. However, it doesn't install the Maxxaudio Waves application and services so when headphones are plugged in to the front jack Windows doesn't detect it and route the audio to the front jack.
If I install the DUP manually all the software is installed and the jack detection works fine, but if I run the DUP silently as a startup script I get the driver but not the Waves software. I have also tried running the Waves MSI that is installed with the driver, both scripted, through Group Policy and manually, but this also fails to install correctly.
I am assuming this has something to do with the reboots required after installation, but I can't manually install the driver on 150 PC's I need to automate it somehow.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a workaround? I just need the headphone detection to work properly!

Answer:Headphone jack to PC audio jack.

If the Recorder as a output jack, you need by one that as that size of jack, also check if it needs stereo or mono to a input jack that is stereo to fit the input of the Laptop i.e microphone jack socket

Question: Headphone Jack

Hey

I have a Acer TravelMate 3260. Its about a year or so old, and I am having problems with the headphone jack. For some programs it will work and others it will not. Sometimes I have to put the laptop to sleep and turn it back on before the headphones will work. Now, I have all my music on Windows Media Player, and the headphones will not work when I plug them in. I cant hear any of my music. But I can hear the sounds of the keyboard when I type, if that makes sense, the sound of the keys seems to be louder. I just want my headphones to work with windows media. There is nothing wrong with the headphones themself because they are new and work with everything else.

Please can some one help me!

Regards
Meagan

Question: Headphone Jack

I accidentally broke a headphone plug off in the jack of my Gateway NE56R31 laptop. I have tried several different methods of removing it. One method included superglue which I am pretty sure has now glued the piece in. I am looking for suggestions for removing the plug or disabling the jack so that I have sound on my computer. Would a pair of USB headphones work? I mostly only use headphones when using my laptop. Thank you.

Answer:Headphone Jack

With the plug superglued into the jack, now the only way to fix the issue is with a replacement system board for the laptop. I don't know that USB or Bluetooth headphones would provide sound.

Question: Headphone Jack??

I have a GW M6307 with Vista HP 32bit. The headphone jack has suddenly stopped working.
I have done a restore back to when it was working..uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers without results. The IDT control panel indicates something else is plugged into the jack both for the mic and HP. I also reinstalled the MS audio drivers that came with the machine. I cannot find any default anywhere to change any setting regarding this. The laptop speakers work but the default to HP when plugged in does not. The speakers conitnue to play with no sound in the HP.There are no indications of a loose connection and the laptop sits on a desk most of the time. I realize this could be a hardware failure but it's hard to believe and I know the headphones work with other devices.
Does any know where a default setting exists or how to confirm a hardware failure??

Answer:Headphone Jack??

If the HP works on other devices ..then its Ok....
So must be your pc .......
Go to device manager ... uninstall the sound card driver ... REBOOT IMMEDIATELY..."Let your pc install the original driver back"...
(BTW..When its plugged in..try to wiggle the cable ..see if it make any connection.?)

Question: Headphone Jack.

Hey there, I've so I think there must be a problem with my headphone jack, for some reason when I connect my headphone to the jack, I can always only hear on one side of the headphone. I can only hear on both sides when I apply some force to the jack, pushing it to the left and I would have to hold it to that position to get it working properly. I forgot since when I had this problem, but it has been like this for quite some time. and when I plug in the same set of headphones to my phone, it works just fine. I've tried this with 3 different headphones and a pair earphones and the problem still persists, so I'm assuiming it is the jack port that is faulty. I've been okay with having this problem because I would always usually just plug in both headphone and audio jacks in the cpu and insert a pen in between both the jacks, having the headphone jack pushed to the left all the time and making it always work. But just recenly I bought an external kareoke microphone which I planned on using to beatbox with, and when I record and playback, I can only hear from the left side of my headphone. Kinda ticks me off because I've spent a lot of money on my headphones, microphone and microphone jack converter but I still can't get the best out of my products. Plus, I would always switch from speakers to headphones, depending on whether I'm listening to music or gaming. What should I do? :/ (Sorry if I've sent any irrelevant information or my English is bad)

Hey guys,
So I bought a XPS 15 9560 16gig ram, with 512 ssd, i7 FHD screen, it arrived 5 days ago and I loved it, its simply the best laptop ever. However, I am met with a strange issue, my headphone jack is useless, not as in the widespread problem with it but its physically useless, every headphone I tried to plug in, is literally not pluging in, like it will go in and just fall out...
So out of curiousity I took some pictures of the headphone jack and put flashlight next to it to see what is going on, and this is what I got:
Is this suppose to be like this? Am I doing something wrong? or am I right for assuming the worst is that dell didn't physically put a headphone jack assembly in my laptop? Please help.
Thanks, oh and if it is the latter, I'm going to return it and never touch dell ever again, its quite insane how poor the QA is.
Jack

Answer:XPS 15 Headphone jack

Hard to tell from the picture, but can you see the actual plug in the opening?  Maybe it wasn't secured internally.

Question: LED HeadPhone Jack

Dear All, Lenovo Y410, there have a red LED on Headphone jack,  but there is no microphone LED light, ? Thanks

Nicholas K.H.ChaiMalaysiaYM: ckhown

Answer:LED HeadPhone Jack

HiIf the red LED is inside the headphone socket then this is for optical out, i.e. connecting your laptop to a surround sound amplifier using an optical cable and the red LED light isn't for finding the connection in the dark but is for carrying digital data.   The microphone socket doesn't output digital audio so it has no LED light inside it.RegardsPhil

Failed Sense Pin in Laptops with HD Audio -- [this section does not apply to older laptops with AC97 audio -- see Section 3]Dell laptops with HD audio (all models since 2006) utilize switching technology in the headphone jack, which is somewhat complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, the jack uses current & impedance-sensing circuitry to trigger software configuration and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). These techniques are called the "sense pin" in this article. When the "sense pin" fails then there is usually this combination of symptoms:    * Speakers don't work and are not muted or deselected    * Headphone jack does work    * Reinstalling audio driver does not help    * Audio test in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics passes, or the speakers work in PSA tests    * On models with 2 headphone jacks, one may be "checked" in the control panel as if in use    * Sometimes but not always, a very gentle wigg... So I just got a Lenovo laptop yesterday for the very first time and I'm having some issues with it.  I stick my external speakers into it, and it does not recognize they are there.  The same goes for headphones.  I even tried plugging them in and going into Playback Devices, but nothing pops up.  What do I need to fix this?  I mean, the audio is good, but not even close to being as good with actual speakers plugged in, especially when listening to music. Oh, if it matters, it is a P500.

O.K I've had this problem for a while now. All I want to do is have my headphone to have a different audio stream than my speakers so that I can talk to a friend through my headset and receive the voice audio, but to also have through my speakers sound from other programs. Basically I just want the system to recognise the speaker and my headphone as different output devices instead of tieing them together. The software I'm using is Realtek Audio Manager and it hasn't been helpful whatsoever, I've had two computers and I've had the same problem with them both.

Hi Cal360,

Welcome to the forum

This is an interesting request I know that it is possible to have 2 or more sounds coming out of the same speakers, but to separate these sounds??

The only way I can think that this might work would be to use 2 soundcards, a quick search through the net shows that this might well work, I am not so sure, so I am going to try it (if I can find my old soundcard) I'll let you know the result

My right headphone speaker wont work. I have had problems with there being no audio before but all i had to do was reboot my computer. But now im only hearing it out my left headphone. Is there a fix for it?

Answer:Right headphone speaker out

Have you tried the headphone is some other device to make sure it's not the headphone or a dirty plug on the headphone? Also wiggle the plug in the jack and see if you get the right side to work.

Finally, check the balance, if you have one in case it's set to left only. On my system, if I doubleclick on the speaker icon in the Sound Panel, another panel comes up and in the Levels section there is an option for L/R Balance.
