Satellite C660D 15F - black screen after start

Question: Satellite C660D 15F - black screen after start

Satelitte C660D 15F

Hi guys,

I have a big problem with my laptop. When I started it - from standby mode - two days ago, I heard the computer start normally but the screen remained black. No mater how often I tried to restart, the screen shows nothing, no message no image. The normal operating light on the side remains on but the lights on the keyboard stay off. I can hear the computer run normally (fan etc.).

I tried hitting shift F8 start buttom on the first night and the image was back on the first attempt when I started the machine and everything seemed normal again ! The next days though, I had a black screen once more and the trick never worked again, no matter how often I tried.

Can somebody please help me out of this mess ? Has anyone encountered a similar problem ? How did you solve it ?

My machine is now exactly four years old.

Thank you so much for your ideas ! I really need to access some files on there !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Disconnect AC power supply and remove the battery. After doing this press power button for about 30 seconds and try to reset your machine. Leave it for a while and try to start it with AC power supply only.

If the motherboard is ?fault? we don?t need to discuss much about it. Your notebook must be repaired.
I presume BIOS chip is screwed up.
How old is your notebook? Is warranty still valid?

So this morning after trying to power up my Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D I was met with a black screen.

The power lights both work and light up, the fans whirl when I power up but nothing ever comes up on the screen, I was wondering if anyone could help here?

It's less than 3 months old.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D will not boot up (black screen)

To be honest I really don?t know how to help you.
Remove battery, leave notebook for a while and try to start notebook with AC power supply only. Try to do it several times with and without battery. If nothing helps there must be some hardware problem so I recommend you to contact Toshiba service and ask for help.

Warranty is valid so there is no reason to be worried about it.

I download the Bios on Toshiba by writting my Serial Number of my laptop.
I checked first my current bios and it was 1.5 I think. The new one was 1.60. I flashed it on WIN 7 64bit
First it verified, it erased and then it wrote after the wrote process, the laptop did a restart automatically. But after the laptop closed and powered again, It stucked at blank black screen. Fan, CD Rom, Keyboard were working. I think USB too because when I connect my phone to laptop, my phones battery is loading. Please I need help. I'm out of warranty.

What I tried so far:
Pull battery out
Plug Power Cable out
Hold power button about 1 minute
Plug Power cable back
Press Power Button
Solution: Same; Blank Black Screen

I?m afraid something goes wrong with BIOS update and now BIOS is ?screwed up?. Usually in this case you need professional help from Toshiba service but it can be pretty expensive.

On this forum you can find many threads where people have described the same problem. Some of them have been able to fix this. one very interesting thread you can find here . Check it out please.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - shift key causes the screen to go black

> I am disappointed to see the shift key (left) as well as the CTRL key causing the screen to go black intermittently when typing my blog...

What does this means exactly? Pressing SHIFT and CTRL button disable the display and you are not able to see anything on the monitor?
Is this right?

Did you check if this happens using an external USB keyboard too?
If not, I would assume that your keyboard malfunctions and needs to be replaced.

A friend of mine has had a issue with my keyboard. The cursor jumped around and some characters were displayed twice? this could be solved by BIOS update?I?m not sure if your notebook uses the latest BIOS but you could check this too.

I tried to update my Bios on my Satellite C660D (psc1YE) notebook last week (big mistake).

Something went wrong during update and now when I switch on I just get a black screen (just LED?s and fan).

After having investigated, the conclusion is I have corrupted the BIOS which now needs to be flashed blind.
So I got hold of a 512MB memory stick, formatted using FAT through windows XP, and used Wincris to create a bootable disk ? having added the bios.rom file (renamed to Bios.wph) which I extracted from the latest BIOS update from the Toshiba site.

My memory stick has three visible files on it ? Phlash16.exe, bios.wph and minidos.
I plug stick into laptop with battery, DVD drive, and power cable disconnected, hold Fn+B down while re-connecting cable?and switch on.

The fan whirs at full speed and the USB stick lights up and then flashes for a minute as if being read. No matter how long I leave on, the fan keeps whirring and the USB light stays on and when I disconnect and re-start ? still a black screen.

I have tried different sticks, (up to 4 GB, with FAT32 format), different boot disk programs (e.g. HP utility) but still no luck.

Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? I have tried looking for a more recent version of Phlash16 just in case that was the problem, but cannot find one anywhere (mine is 2008 version)

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated?even if its just to tell me I am wasting my time because the pc is un-fixable.

Answer:Black screen on Satellite C660D (PSC1YE) after BIOS update

I cannot say you if you wasting your time or not because I don?t know if the motherboard ROM module is OK or not?

In most cases it should be possible to reflash the ROM module again using the crisis BIOS disk but such disk is available for Toshiba authorized service technicians and as far as I know such reflash method is not always the same?

However, in some cases it could be possible that the mobo could not be fixed by crisis disk? this would be the worst case?

I recommend you to get in contact with an Toshiba authorized service provider in order to check this? the guys would be able to use the crisis disk and could test if its possible to reflash the ROM module?
If it would not be possible?well? in such case you would need new motherboard :(
But lets hope you do't need it...

Ok pretty much the most dense person you will ever likely to meet when it comes to things like this. but will try my best to explain.

Couple of days ago my laptop froze on me resulting on me having to turn it off and start it again by the power button. When I started it again the message below appeared.

Windows failed to start . A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
If windows files have been damaged or configured in incorrectly, start up repair can help and diagnose the problem, if power was interrupted during start up, choose start windows normally.

-Launch Start up repair (recommended)
-Start windows normally

When I press Launch Start up repair it goes to a screen with a big cursor (which you can move around) but nothing else happens.
When I pressed on the start windows normally setting it went through to the windows logo whilst starting up but then stalls at this point.

My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense :p

Thanks for looking

Answer:Satellite C660D froze and does not start - Windows failed to start

>My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense

I think its easy to fix but you would need an Toshiba Recovery disk.
Did you create one in the past?

If not, try to start the HDD recovery: power up the unit, press F8. Now choose Repair my Computer.
Now new Window should open and here you should choose Toshiba HDD recovery option. This would set the notebook back to factory settings.

In case this isn?t possible, you would need to boot from a recovery disk to reinstall the system.

I was just wondering if the web camera on the Satellite C660/C660D is colour or black and white?
If its colour, how do I change it to colour?

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - Webcam colour or black and white?

Of course it?s color cam.
It?s a common webcam? Do you have just black/white webcam picture?
In your case I recommend checking the webcam software options.
Start the Camera Assistant software and in the Properties you could find the option called ?Backlight Compensation?. Check this option.
Furthermore in the ?Image? tab you will find some controls like: brightness, gamma, hue, saturation and sharpness. Play around with these settings.

i was installing win 7 via the toshiba recovery wizard, but during the installation the notebook freezes and i have to power off.

When i start it again, it show ups two error messages:
1) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
2) Reboot and Select proper boot device

From then on i can not go to the recovery wizard (F8), it only appears these messages. I have deactivated the lan on the bios. The first message disappears but the second one is still there. The hdd is recognized by bios and the bootsequence is ok.

What i have done:
1) Reset the bios to his default
2) Try to install with a win xp cd, but it crashes after a while and gives me a blue screen.

What else can i do ? I appreciate all your help. Thanks.

Answer:Re: Satellite C660D-1C7 don't start

If you want to have factory settings again you must install recovery image using recovery disc.

Hi all,
I've had my C660D for a couple of years now without any major issues cropping up. However, a few days ago, I switched it on and everything was loading as normal (the desktop loads fully), but then the fan became very loud and the laptop froze and was unresponsive.

It keeps repeating this problem, it is useable for the best part of 2 minutes then freezes again. I have managed to do system restore and even took it apart to clear the fan out, but still the problem persists. I have tried safe mode, but still get the same problem.

Please help!
Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660D is freezing after start-up

it is not easy to say what is wrong there and why this happen. If somehow possible try to back-up all your data and install OS again using original recovery image. After doing this you will have ?factory settings? and if there is no some hardware problem everything should be OK again.

I know it is most radical method but, in my opinion, most effective to check hardware functionality and test if such issues can be related to some software problem.

What do you think?

Hi Guys,

I have a laptop, it is a Toshiba Satellite C660D-15F
Part no : PSC0UE-02R00MFR

At startup it blocks on password (Bios), but the owner does not remember it.
I know there is 2 nodes on the motherboard to jumper to reset the BIOS.
Can anyone tell me what is the label of those nods or give me any solution to unlock the BIOS ?

Thank you very much

Answer:Re: Satellite C660D - how to reset BIOS password at start-up?

BIOS password is very important security feature and we cannot discuss about this on public forum. Why to protect my notebook when someone who steals it can post on Toshiba forum can ask how to remove my protection?

BIOS password must be removed by authorized Toshiba technicians after check if you are real owner.

_sometimes_ my sattelite A660-10x (PSAW3E) wont start.
I turn it on, you hear the fan coming up, on screen you see blinking cursor on left top screen, than it sort of jumps more to left and top more into corner and stops. Nothing happens, after a while i turn off the laptop.
If i do this 3-5 times eventually it starts. Sometimes it starts on first attempt.

What i tried:
Reinstalling the PC from disc partition with Win7
Taking out HDD into my desktop PC and running CHKDSC with scanning and repairing errors.
Cleaning up the whole PC from dust, fans etc.
Pulling out/in battery/AC
Memory check (RAM)
Processor power management change the minimum processor state from 5% to 100%

I understand PC well but so far have no idea what can cause this. The only thing what comes to mind is that the partition at start of the disc has errors which i cant reach since there is boot partition, original-installation partition, and the rest which is the only one i cant reach with CHKDSC.
What i heard that someone tried is changing the Motherboard battery (the small round one), can it be it?

It doesnt seem to be disc or LCD problem, nor RAM memory.

Answer:Satellite A660-10X sometimes wont start - black screen at start-up

> I turn it on, you hear the fan coming up, on screen you see blinking cursor on left top screen, than it sort of jumps more to left and top more into corner and stops. Nothing happens, after a while i turn off the laptop.

Flashing cursor in the left upper corner is a known sign and could be related to faulty HDD or RAM memory problems.

Memory check could be performed and from my experience such memory checks provide approximately correct results. But even if the memory check would not find any RAM problems, it could be still an RAM related issue.

Of course, I cannot say for sure, if its RAM related issue or maybe its related to another faulty part.
Fact is that such issue is caused by hardware problems and in worst case the motherboard would need to be replaced.

I'm having an issue with flickering horinzontal lines randomly appearing on the screen for a random duration (during all kinds of situations, web browsing, video playback, high or low cpu usage, etc.). Very similar behavior can be seen on these videos:

The motherboard has been changed already to no avail.
Based on sources around the internet the current best guess for a cause is the advanced power management, which dinamically changes the core speeds (in CPU and/or GPU). Disabling these (turing off PowerPlay, setting Windows power management to maximum performance, etc.) doesn't help though.

The issue's been present for months. 1 single BSOD happened, possibly caused by a directx / display driver issue, not sure if there is a connection.

Still couldn't reproduce the issue (tried universal stress tests, cpu-memory-vga tests, etc.). The issue is very random.
System: Windows 7 prof. 64bit, latest drivers from toshiba website.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite C660D-16E - flickering horizontal lines on screen

I?ve checked this first video but I don?t see anything.

On this virtual way is not easy to discuss about such issues but what I want to know is follow:
Have you tried to connect external display and check if the same will happen again?

In my opinion such issues can be result of graphic card malfunction. To find out what the problem can be you need time and more testing. Obtain second HDD, put it in your notebook, install original Toshiba recovery image and test it several days with ?factory settings?.

If the same will happen again and again it must be hardware related issue.

What do you think about that?

So I thought it might be a windows issue. I reinstalled XP home and I ran the update for SP3.

After the restart computer starts but nothing is shown on the screen, not even Bios

Help me please

Answer:Satellite A210-183 won't start - black screen

Do you see the Toshiba Logo? Did you change any hardware recently? Install more memory?

I would try swapping around the memory modules, or try just one module in case one is faulty.

I noticed some Toshiba models have a separate BIOS for XP and Vista. So check the Toshiba website for a suitable BIOS, if there is no dedicated XP BIOS, just update the BIOS to the latest version.

XP SP3 is know to cause problems on some PC's. I would install XP SP2 instead and see how that goes.

Answer:Black screen when I start the Satellite A100-773

It?s hard to say if it?s a faulty GPU or the internal notebook display.
You could try to connect an external monitor to the notebook to check if something will appear on second monitor.

If you will not see any pictures or anything else then I assume the graphic card is dead.
This could be the worth case because the GPU is fixed on the board and therefore the whole motherboard replacement would be needed.

Seems you have to contact a technician from the authorized service point in your country for the notebook check and the fault diagnosis.

If the warranty is valid everything should be done for free!!

Hi Guys, I need some help please. On Thursday I was on my computer and noticed the time was wrong I thought I must of done something wrong and was going to fix it. I went to restart my computer but it wouldnt boot just had a black screen. I knew I hadnt damaged the screen. On Friday I charged my battery up for an hour and put it in the computer and that worked too so I thought the problem was solved.

Unfortunately today my computer will not start at all with or without the battery in still get the black screen. The fan is going but apart from that its very quiet. I tried putting the cd in to see if that would do anything but it didnt.

Any suggestions please?

Have you installed any extra Memory? Try re-seating the RAM or boot with just one RAM Module (turn off the notebook first before removing RAM).

If still no good then it may be a Mainboard problem. There is a Repair Center list on the Toshiba website.

Hello to everybody,

first to say that i've searched through this forum and found several ppl with similar problems and the solution was to bring their laptops to service.
However straight to the problem; it just happened after a copmuter freeze.

I tried to start the laptop and all the lights were on, hard disk working for 5-10 sec, dvd-rom responding and also when I plugged/unplugged the power light responded to that the only thing is I don't get anything on my monitor and nothing is loading.

I assume as the hard drive stops wokring.
I tried to remove the battery and the power cord and i left it like that for 30min/1h , even all night... , replaced the ram and still nothing.
Of course i will bring it to an authorized service but there isn't one located in my town so I'll be happy if someone found solution to this problem

10x to everybody in advance.

Ok ,sorry i forgot. The model is Satellite A300D

Answer:Black screen on start up on Satellite A300D

When you removed the battery and power cable for 1 hour or more and then is the same, it?s a hardware issue.
I think it?s really the best to go to an ASP. They can check your laptop and exchange the hardware because I think it?s a problem with the mainboard.

You can also send the notebook to an ASP if isn?t one in your town.

But here you can search for ASP?s if you didn?t do this: => Support & Downloads => Find an ASP

I just bought a new laptop toshiba satellite NB10-A-10V but I hate windows 8.1 and I wanted to install ubuntu 14.04.

Now, when I start my laptop a black screen replaced the toshiba's logo and any key worked (F12,deleted,escape)
So how I can handle this issue? Why toshiba doesn't want or blocked an another OS than windows 8.1?
I just called the support and they told me that it is 70 euros for that. it is almost a steal!

So I think it is a good laptop and I just want to use it with ubuntu, I don't see where is the problem.

Else I will repair it in a shop specialize of this kind of issue and I will never buy an another toshiba in my future.

So, If you can find a solution (for free,300 euros already for the laptop just 4 days ago.) it will be very cool

Answer:Black screen at start of the Satellite NB10-A-10V

Usually after new product purchase new owner should read user?s manuals document at first. There is described that original preinstalled recovery image (original Windows version) is saved on HDD and every new owner before to start make some experiments or install anything else should create recovery media. It can be DVD or USB, depending on machine model.
Have you created such recovery media?

Very important thing is that Toshiba doesn't support Linux but, generally speaking, you can do with your machine whatever you want. Nobody force you to use preinstalled Windows version. Many people use Win7 or Linux on different Toshiba models. Due to this Toshiba has created separate Linux category on this forum where you can exchange information and experience with other forum users.

I must also say that you are wrong if you think that Toshiba blocks something. That?s definitely wrong. When you shutdown preinstalled Win8 completely you will be able to enter BIOS settings and change BOOT MODE. After doing this you can install whatever you want.

More about that you can read on

It happens from time to time when I try to start my Satellite Pro U200 PLUA1E-02802QS4, then I'm getting a black screen even from the BIOS.
What's wrong and howto solve this problem?

BTW I've already this BIOS version: P0044v370.exe installed.

Answer:Satellite Pro U200 -> Black screen after Start

This happens from time to time???
This means that you cannot replicate this issue???

Hmm? it?s not easy to say what this issue could be?.
Maybe BIOS update will help you? at the moment you can find the BIOS 3.7-win on the Toshiba European driver page.
If you have a lower BIOS version installed, then I recommend an update.

It?s also possible that this issue is related to an hardware part; motherboard, display, etc?
In such case the part should be replaced? but first of all it?s necessary to know what part is affected and I think only the ASP technician can do this?

What do you think???

This problem happened a couple years ago. It has been unused and untouched until today. A couple years ago, my Toshiba L350D-11D was able to turn on but the screen was black. Nothing showed up. Just plain black.

Today, I took it out again and tried to do things I read on the internet. None of those worked. They were on different models though. I decided to create my own post for my specific laptop. My laptop only turns on if the charger is connected. If the charger is not connected and the battery is still attached, it won't turn on. The power jack is not loose and the charger isn't either. The CD/DVD thing still opens, closes and works but the screen wont.

Hopefully this is enough information to give someone an idea to what the problem is. I have tried ESC + Power and Power + 0 but none worked. I also tried holding the power button for 1 - 2 minutes with no power source and reconnecting, but it also didn?t work.

It looks like serious problems with hardware related to mobo (vga). Can you enter Bios on startup or the screen just stays dark? Is external monitor connected to the laptop?

I'm using the L30 - 10Y model with the following memory specification:

standard : 512 MB
maximum expandability : 2,048 MB
technology : DDR2 RAM (533 MHz)
expansion module sizes : 256, 512, 1,024 MB

I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic with a 32 bit operating system.

When installing, I removed the standard 512mb module and added 2 compatible 1 gb modules. On start up it just remains on a black screen.

However, if i removed 1 of the 1gb modules and put the old 512mb module back in to give me 1.5gb, it works.

Just wondering if anyone knows why this is and if there is anything I can try to get the maximum 2gb, if this is indeed possible.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite L30-10Y Black screen on start up after installing new RAM modules

Maybe they are too fast or don't have the correct SPD settings required for the Chipset/CPU.

What Speed and Timing are those new RAM modules? When you buy new RAM, you should match the speed and timing with the original RAM.

If you mix fast RAM with slower RAM, both modules will run at the speed of the slower RAM. Which may explain why it works when the 512MB module is installed.

I have a problem with a Satellite C50D-A-133 that doesn't start (stays on black screen).
I tried the reset procedure, and replaced the RAM without success.

Did anyone have this issue ?

Thank you in advance.

PS : For information, if somebody from Toshiba reads this message, the french support website doesn't work (redirects to the homepage when entering serial number or selecting model from the list).

Answer:Satellite C50D doesn't start (black screen)

By reset procedure did you mean removing the battery and pressing and holding the power 30 sec long?
This is the common procedure in case the notebook does not wake up anymore.
But of course this will be useless in case of hardware problem.

It could be also possible that corrupted CMOS BIOS data prevents the machine from booting. This may happen in case of BIOS EPROM module problems? but this should be checked by authorized service provider?

As you see, it?s really not very easy to say what could be wrong here?

Satellite M30, WinXP

Sometimes, the screen stays very dark, what means that you can see a tiny little bit the startup info in the background and also the windows desktop, for up to 2 minutes before suddenly becoming really lit.
Not even the latest BIOS update did a change. And what is bizarre is that it appears not always. A non-stop start-and-shut-down-sequence showed that it appears about 2 out of 3 times.
What could be the reason?

Answer:Satellite M30, Screen stays sometimes nearly black after start up to several minutes

Hi LeTom,

did you use the toshiba recovery os or a own installation?

It seems that the Display has a defect, so here are some questions to play it safe!

Did the failure occure also when the red Toshiba logo is shown shortly after starting to boot?

If you use a own OS installation, you should do a complete new installation with the Toshiba recovery CD (be carefull all data will be lost, make a backup).
Then the notebook is setted back to software default settings and if the failure occures yet, you should check up the hardware by a Toshiba service partner!

I think the M30 is still under warranty!

Bye Pelox

my laptop Satellite L850 doesn't start any more. When I push the start button, just the two side lights on the right (wi fi and the other) illuminate.

I have tried to take the battery out and than start the laptop but nothing happens. The harddisk is okay (I put it out and made a backup of my data).

I also tried to connect the laptop with an external monitor but the display remained also black.

There were no devices (USB etc.) connected with the laptop.

Can you help me?

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there but there must be some hardware related issue, maybe damaged BIOS. All you have done is right.

If there is no reaction and you cannot see anything on the screen, I’m afraid that you need professional help and you should contact nearest Toshiba service provider.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-011, which is almost 5-6 years old. It suddenly started to behave abnormal.

First, I started to get some black screen for 1-2 sec when it was running. The screen was on and off from time to time.

After couple of days, I could not started up my windows xp sp3 operating system. I tried to start in safe mode with networking to check if I got some spy, virus or something. I have run avast, hijact this, ad aware and some more but could not find anything at all.

Later on, I decided to format my laptop with an xp professional but this time I can not see any think happening more than fun running and a black screen. I just got a black screen at the beginning and it does not boot.

I connected it to a TV screen and there I could started up. I re-installed all drivers and formatted it but all I got is a black screen on my laptop at the very beginning.

What should I do now? Do you think I have a HW problem with my screen or a driver problem with nvidia geforce go 7600? Maybe I am missing something?

Thanks in advance for all answers.

Answer:Re: Satellite A100-011 does not boot and a black screen at the start

If you can see the pic on the TV there must be some problem with notebook?s display. Either is there some connection problem or display itself.

Do you want to repair it on your own? Can you disassemble the notebook?
I mean if you have no experience with this stuff you should ask for professional help.

Hello everyone.

My laptop suddenly decided that its monitor's native - and maximum - resolution is 1024x768 (actually it's 1280x800). The active area of the screen is situated in an upper left corner, while pixels below have the same colours as the bottommost active pixel of the same column and everything to the right is black.

Additionally, when notebook starts, it denies the mere existence of internal monitor. To turn it on I have to place my laptop into sleep mode and turn it on again.

This problem started when I updated Java Runtime Environtment and persisted after its uninstallation. It happens not the first time - but before I was able to restore my notebook to normal by uninstalling some software - specifically, a graphic tablet's driver. Unfortunately, I'm unsure what caused this problem the first time.

I've tried to connect an external monitor and it works just fine. I've tried to find the internal monitor in device manager window while it was black - and it wasn't listed there.

I've tried to update every possible driver, tried to disassemble the damned thing and even tried to uninstall some unneeded software at random but problem's still there. Now, I'm out of ideas and will appreciate any help.

Answer:Satellite A300D 14P invalid resolution + black screen on start

Try to remove the display driver from the system and after cleaning the registry install the graphic card driver once again.
To clean the registry you can use CCleaner. It?s freeware tool which cleans and removes garbage from the system.

You said that your external monitor works fine. Well, check if the internal display is set as default display and assign the right resolution to this display.

I assume you?ve got the ATI graphic chip. So the settings should be available in the ATI Catalyst

I bought the Satellite Pro P300-13m a few weeks ago and within this time I had about 5-6 times the same back screen when I wanted to startup the system. When he does this the notebook gives 3 loud bleeps (don't know what this means actually).

When he does this I have to push the on/off button for 5 sec and after a few times doing this he will show the toshiba welcome screen... then sometimes he reboots automatically again and I get that annoying black screen again. Most of the time when I wait about 10 mins and try to do the same the system starts as normal... yep.. very strange thing here.

To be honest I do not want to send the notebook to Toshiba again, as I need it badly for my business...

So.. What could this be? I updated already to the latest BIOS.

Thnx in advance,

I purchased this laptop back in the beginning of March and had to return it to store due to an issue at start-up when half the screen would turn black on the Windows log in screen. They ordered me a new one that I received about 3 weeks ago and I used it for about a week before I got the same issue of half black screen with the start-up.

Now it has been running really slow and about an hour ago I had it freeze up on me and my entire screen turn into a bunch of colorful lines.
I had to restart into safe-mode and run a virus scan just to make sure that wasn't my problem.

I don't download anything on this computer other than the basic messengers and photo editing programs.
I have an HP MP7170N desktop which i use to download everything that seems to run quicker than the laptop and I use photo programs, downloads torrents and store most of my music and photos on that one and it only has 1GB of memory compared to this ones 4GB.

What is the deal?
Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do.
I can't really return it to the store because they only give a 14-day grace period for returns.

Now, my pc started to not detect my mouse and I went to restart and it is stuck on a black screen!

First it was stuck on the Toshiba page and didn't move. I restarted again and it got passed the Toshiba page and I was left with a black screen.

I think it may have something to do with the USB. I cannot back-up my files onto my hard drive so I can wipe everything out and start fresh...

I can't do anything with it either...
I unplugged the mouse, unplugged from power source and took out the DVD I had in it and still nothing.

Can someone please help???

So i press the power button, The 3 Leds are appearing fuctional but the CPU-GPU fan fails to start!

After a while it shuts off it self and then it tries to start again but the fan fails again while only the power led is on and not the others (Led 1 and 2 on the bottom).
Must say again that the screen appear always black (might be dead also)

I thought it was an overheating problem so i cleaned up the fan but with not many signs of dust!
But that was crearly not the problem because i tested it!
Now i think it might be a GPU problem but i dunno for sure!

Any suggestions what it might be and how o fix this? Thank you!

Answer:Satellite U400-10N fails to start while showing black screen!

It can be RAM problem, it can be an motherboard problem, it can be also an CPU or GPU problem.
Any part can be affected.
So what to do?

You could check part like RAM. You could purchase new, good tested RAMs and could replace it but what happens if you purchase new RAM modules, replace it and notebook would NOT power up?
You would spend some money for new RAM but finally other part could be faulty?

Therefore I think an professional service technician should check the unit firstly.
The guys could give you a proper answer about the faulty part and then you could decide what to do?
You know what I mean?

Hello, I have a Satellite A300D-13A and the problem is, when i try to start the notebook mostly it tries to boot from the hard disk and from the DVD drive but then it just shuts down and immediatly starts again to do the same. This happens 4 or 5 times. After that it is seems like it finally boots but the only thing i see is a black screen. And the keyboard does not work either.

If i try it a few times with shutting down by pressing the power button (you know which I mean), I manage that it starts normally (but such a situation is still anoying). By the way, it seems like it happens only, when I haven't used the notebook for a while. So maybe it has something to do with the temperature. But 's more or less 20?C in my room.

In the Bios I have change the order of booting sources (I can't change there much more)

I'm grateful for any kind of help.
Thanks for your cooments in advance

Answer:Re: Satellite A300D-13A: Start problems - does not boot or only black screen

The issue could be related to the software but also to the hardware problem.
But first of all we should check if it?s a software issue.

You are using the original preinstalled OS by Toshiba. Is it right?
As far as I know the newer notebook series are equipped with the HDD recovery option.
In this case the Toshiba Recovery DVD was not delivered together with the notebook but there is an option to create one.
HDD recovery option can be used to reinstall and to refresh the operating system.
I would recommend repairing the OS and to reinstall it again pressing the F8 button. The advanced boot menu should appear and then you should choose ?Repair your Computer?.

This option will start the recovery procedure and the OS would reinstall again.
Please check if a new installation will improve the situation with the notebook.
Additionally it would be advisable to update the BIOS if a newer BIOS version is available on the Toshibas European driver page.

If all this suggestion will not help you then the whole notebooks hardware should be checked by a local ASP.

Can you access the BIOS pressing F2?
How about booting from a bootable disk like Recovery DVD?

If both is not possible, I?m afraid you have a serious hardware problem.
In such case I get just speculate about the affected parts?. Maybe its GPU problem or the motherboard?who knows?

Any ideas how to resolve this issue ?!

Please help.

Answer:Re: Satellite P100-286 doesn't start - black screen after BIOS update

Try this:
- Remove battery and disconnect the AC adaptor
- wait several time about ~30-40min
- connect both parts and try to power up

If this will not help you then you will need to ask the ASP in your country for BIOS refalsh. It looks something went wrong during the update procedure.

3. I then tried to reset the computer by switching it off, disconnecting the AC power and removing the battery. However, when I reconnected the battery and AC supply, the computer wouldn't power up at all - no lights, no fan, absolutely nothing. When you connect notebook to AC power supply are DC-in and battery LED ON?
Have you maybe noticed flashing power LED?

On this virtual way it is not easy to say for sure what the problem is. It can be power supply electronic. All such important parts are placed on the mainboard.

Hy there,

My laptop (Toshiba Satellite C660D-10M) came with Free-DOS. I have installed WIndows 7 and all the required drivers from Toshiba website except the driver for my Network Adapter. I can't go to the Internet because of this!

From this page:

I enter the correct info:

Notebook - Satellite - Satellite C Series - C660D - PSC0WE - Windows 7 32bit.

A) There are no CHIPSET drivers for my laptop here? But i think they are merged with the DISPLAY DRIVER and i could install only them.
B) LAN DRIVER - after installing this driver, in my DEVICE MANAGER -> Network Controller has a question mark and is not installed.

Checked BIOS - it is enabled.

Uninstalled, found my NIC SPecific driver on realtek website. Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet. -> Installed the driver for win7, ----- NOTHING!!!

I don't know what to do next?

Please can you help me?

Answer:Can't enable my NIC on my new Satellite C660D-10M

You are right about chipset driver. By AMD based notebooks it is integrated with display driver.

The same LAN card has Satellite C660D ? PSC0UE so the right Win7 32bit LAN driver you can find HERE . It must work. All offered drivers are tested.
Please test it and send some feedback.

Have you installed WLAN driver?
Be sure unknown device in device manager list is definitely related to LAN and not WLAN card.

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum,
I would like to upgrade my hdd but I don't know what to choose.
I don't need anything too fancy, I would like to know how to look for the right one.
Is there a way that tells you the compatible one as there is for the ram memory?

Please help
Thank you in advance.
Toshiba satellite c660d pscole....hope this helps

Answer:HDD upgrade on Satellite C660D

As far as I know some HDD compatibility list doesn't exist but to find right HDD should not be problematic. Question is: what is the reason for HDD exchange or upgrade?

Do you need more capacity or you want to use faster HDD and increase notebook?s performance?
Maybe you should think about SSD. For some basic info check please

hi ppl,

I bought my new Satellite C660D few weeks ago. Its great to work with it, but the damn A-key is broken since I've got it. What I have to do to solve that problem? Do I need a whole new keyboard? If i do, could I have another keyboard, which has a POS1-key and not that num-block ? Who could I ask about that?

sry 4 my english :( i'm from Germany but I hope u understand what i want :D

thank u!

Answer:Satellite C660D - A-key is broken

If the a-key is broken since you got the notebook I would return the whole notebook and ask for a replacement one. This shouldn?t happen on a new notebook so such an exchange should be free for you.

Please contact the seller of the notebook and explain the situation. I?m sure it will not be a problem to exchange the unit. :)

Hi, I've had this laptop for about a month now and everything was fine up until a few days ago when a few strange things started happening.

Firstly, at random times it wont let me scroll using the touchpad and secondly it won't let me click anything on the task bar or tabs on my internet browser and sometimes nothing on the screen is clickable at all. Another problem is, just randomly I'll be typing and the right click options will keep flashing up and if I press left click, it doesn't stop it, the right click options keep showing.

All of these started at the same time so I guess they're related. The only solution is If I use the task manager to stop explorer and then run it again then it works again for a while but it's just unpredictable when it will happen again but it happens for about 60% of the time I'm using the laptop. It's getting really frustrating now as I've got lots of work on at the moment and slows me down having to run task manager all the time.

Please can someone shed some light on what they think might be causing this and how I can solve it. Thanks :)

Answer:Really random problems with Satellite C660D-102

have you installed any programs recently that can affect a normal laptop operation? run antivirus to check for viruses if you have them. Restore the factory settings, then.

Hi there,

I've got a Toshiba Satellite C660D-102 operating Windows 7. Basically, if my computer is left unattended and goes to screensaver, it freezes and needs to be restarted by holding down the power button. If I'm listening to music, it makes a screeching noise when it does this until it is turned off.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?
Thanks, Matt

+Message was edited: notebook name has been changed+

Answer:Satellite C660D-102 crashes when goes to screensaver

Hi Matt

To be honest this T series notebook is not known to me. Which is the right model name or model number?
Do you use original preinstalled OS?
Have you noticed this issue from the day one?
Do you use standard Windows screensaver?
Have you installed some additional software that runs in the background?

Sorry for all these questions but it is not easy to give you simple and precise answer what the problem can be.

I have Satellite C660D-13H and I just wanna to work with win XP but unfortunatley i can't find any drivers for my model on Toshiba site. It is possible for that model to work with XP? Because that CPU is too weak for Win 7?!
Can somebody help me?

Thanks in advice,
S. Stoev

Answer:Drivers for Win XP Toshiba Satellite C660D-13H

It seems that Win XP is not supported on Satellite C660D and therefore you cannot find the drivers on the Toshibas driver pages.
But even if the Win XP drivers are not available, you can install Win XP.
But you will have to search for the XP drivers at your own hand.

Here is a nice document how to determine the needed drivers:

You can also try some XP drivers released for other notebook models like Satellite C650D

But I recommend using Win 7 since this is the best OS from Microsoft.
The CPU is not too weak. Even my 6 years old notebook uses Win 7. I installed this OS and it runs properly.

I have an Toshiba Satellite C660D-18W, and suddenly i got the message that i need to enter password when i started the computer, i tried to take out the bios battery, no luck, i try to find out how i can reset the bios, still no luck, can someone help me?

Answer:How to reset BIOS on Satellite C660D-18W?

It is not known to me that BIOS password can be set from alone and it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
Fact is that BIOS password can be removed by authorized personal only. As far as I know there are various methods for doing this but it cannot be discussed on public forum.

Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can do this for you.

I try Realtek Media + Speakers
Where could be that setting ?

Sorry but your posting is a little bit confusing. What do you want to make exactly?

You can change the volume if you click on speaker icon taskbar (left click) then you can change the volume. Furthermore you can mute/unmute the sound if you press FN+ESC key combination.

Did you already update the sound driver?

Hi folks

I'm looking for a recommendation for an SSD for my laptop, Satellite C660D-10W

I want to do a clean build - I have a new licensed copy of Windows 10 Pro.

I bought a Kingston drive following some research online, but subsequently found out from Kingston themselves stating they don't support use of this device in my laptop.

Toshiba customer support put me on to Topaz who recommended product + service (albeit not an SSD!!!) costing in excess of ?250. For that price I can get a like-for-like replacement of the laptop, under warrantee!

I'm looking for a simple option where I can buy an SSD and do the install myself. 250Gb to 500 GB for in the region of ?60ish.

Hi, so i got the C660D - 155 Satellite Laptop for my birthday 09/04/1993.
I turned it on, let it do it's own thing to install windows 7, registered as a user and started the laptop as normal.

There where no problems at all at first!
Then suddenly my audio driver decides to just remove itself from my computer (i think it was after a windows update).

To make things worse my firewall is off and i found out that *i am blocked from doing anything that requires administrator rights.*
I can't reinstall my audio driver and i cant turn my firewall back on.
I read that it could be Malware/Virus/Spyware related?! Is that even possible? I have PC Tools Spyware Doc installed and updated to the most recent software.

I have tried the Ctrl+Alt+Del at the main screen to try and log in as admin and that doesn't work...
Why am i not administrator? Who is?!

Any help?

Answer:Satellite C660D-155: No admin rights

I?m not quite sure what you did with the notebook or the system but maybe you should simply try to reinstall this once again using HDD recovery.
If it?s a new notebook then this should not be a problem;
Power up the unit, press F8 then choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.

Setup the OS once again and check if you have the full control.

My Toshiba C660D has become very slow responding to all commands. The fan is constantly on. I have downloaded SpeedFan app and it indicates GPU at 81 Celsius and Core at 80... All updates installed to date. I'm told this may be to some issues with cooling system.
Anyone care to advice?

I would like to avoid taking it to the service.

Answer:Satellite C660D-15X - Overheating and Slow

As I can see on the screenshot the temperature is not on the critical level.
I don't know how long do you use preinstalled OS but in my opinion your machine needs a bit “maintenance”.
I recommend you to clean it up. You can buy compressed air and clean it up and make cooling vents free of dust.
What can be done too is to reinstall OS. Back-up all your important data and reinstall original recovery image. After doing this optimize preinstalled OS and I’m pretty sure your machine will run much faster and quieter.

Battery suddenly stopped charging.
Laptop will only work with power cable plugged in.
Battery symbol says "4% available (plugged in - not charging)"
Tried a different power cable from another Satellite, same problem.

How can I find out if the problem is the laptop or the battery ?

Thanks, Ruth

Answer:Satellite C660D-155 battery problem

>How can I find out if the problem is the laptop or the battery ?

To test this you will need a new good tested battery :(

But in many cases the battery needs to be pre-charged? this happens if the notebook was not used for a longer time?if this is a case, then connect the AC-Adapter to allow the system to pre-charge the battery. I read that such pre-charge process can take up to 3 hours.
Once this process is finished the notebook should automatically start the normal battery charging procedure.

So my laptop is unrecoverly dead ;(
(Toshiba Satellite C660D-1D3)
but the HDD still works (Toshiba HDD2L04 320GB)
the problem is, I protected it with a password that I can't disable.

I have the password, I also could save all my important files running it from an old crappy HP laptop.

But now I would love to use it as an external drive, which I cant as long as it has the protection (I tried a few pcs, none worked).

When I try to disable it in the BIOS from the old HP, it asks me about a second password, a master user password... but I have never had one in my Toshiba :/

What now? Do I have to go to a store and try it from another Toshiba or is there a tool to disable the pasword from windows or linux?

Answer:Satellite C660D-1D3 - How to remove HDD password?

The unknown HDD password cannot be removed… even the Toshiba authorized service provider will not be able to remove such unknown HDD password.
In such case the HDD will be useless

Take a look into this Toshiba FAQ:
Is it possible to remove a forgotten HDD password?

Well, this is certainly a weird problem with my father's Satellite C660D-140 notebook.

A few days ago, he wanted to use it, but upon booting, it would attempt to boot in PXE. In the BIOS, the hard drive couldn't be found and the hard drive was not making a single sound. I assumed that the hard drive was done for, and since I was already planning on giving the notebook an SSD to speed things up, and had the data backed up, I ordered a Crucial BX100 250GB SSD, and installed that in the notebook, with the screws in place. To my surprise, the BIOS didn't pick it up either!

Then I did what I should have done before ordering the SSD: Checking the hard drive by plugging it into my desktop. And would you believe it: It worked fine. So, the conclusion is that the notebook fails to power the drive, so either the SATA power plug isn't delivering any power to the drive, or insufficient.

What causes this? Nothing weird happened to this notebook, it happened all of the sudden.

Answer:Satellite C660D-140 - No SATA power

On this virtual way it is not easy to offer exact diagnostic and all we can do is to speculate what the problem can be.
In my opinion there is some problem with HDD controller. I presume it is defective so what you need is professional help.

Is the warranty still valid?

Hi, my dtr has the above notebook, only purchased in sept 2012 (so not too happy!!), and a month or so ago it had a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" problem, so advice was to reinstall Windows and all drivers.

I did try a few re-installs but in the end just did a full recovery (F8-Advanced boot- Repair your computer), and although i can log on in safe mode i cannot log on in normal mode. It went through the first Toshiba installation screen ok (loading drivers etc...35/35) but then when it says finishing installation it just goes on for hours and hours. I have tried going back to the Advanced boot screen (F8) and maybe doing a re-repairing the Windows, but now the "Repair your computer" prompt is not showing on the screen.

I have been told that i will probably need Recovery discs (she forgot to make them!) but not happy with having to pay 35.90eurs for them bearing in mind age of the machine and the amount of use it has had! Needless to say there wont be any more Toshiba products in this household for a good while....

Any info to a limited knowledge techy would be much appreciated...

Answer:Satellite C660D won't reload after Recovery

> Needless to say there wont be any more Toshiba products in this household for a good while....
Please don't be mad on me but I would like to start with this last sentence. I?m really wondering you wrote this. Toshiba systems are not different than other systems offered by other notebook manufacturers. None of them put recovery discs in the box and there is no big difference between Toshiba and some other non-Toshiba notebook.
It is strongly recommended creation of back-up recovery disc that can be used in case if there is some problem with HDD or preinstalled OS.

Anyway, you have two options now: either you can order original recovery disc and install original recovery image (factory settings) or you can install OS using original Microsoft installation disc. Al necessary drivers, tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba download page -

If you will decide to install own OS and need some assistance please let us know.

I can't get the laptop to open, as I'm getting an error message that a USB or storage device was removed while the laptop was still running. it appears that a Internet Dongle was removed before shut-down. I'm getting an error message 0xc00000e9 I/O. The system suggests System Repair or Start normally, but each one that I try brings me back to the same error report.

I contacted Technical Support & they gave me good info but suggest I do a back-up or save first! I don't know how I can do this, as I can't open the system to create a back-up.
I can't find my original recovery disk, but I do have a few back-ups that I created some months ago.

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, but not to Toshiba Laptops,

I bought my girlfriend the Toshiba C660D-181 earlier today, and myself, i think it's a great laptop for the price. Especially the amount of Ram
and the Graphics Card.

One thing i'm confused on is the 3D Capable part.
What is meant by 3D Capable, what does it enable me to do? Do i need extra hardware?
I've no idea how to use this feature, or what it actually does. I know 3D capable usually means (Well on 3Dtv's) that you can view 3D content with the use of Glasses,
but how exactly does it work, if so, on this computer?

I'm a little confused on this to be honest, and any help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite C660D-181: Questions about 3D feature

The notebook is equipped with the AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphic card.
This graphic card supports the 3D Graphic Accelerator and a 120 Hz screen supports 3D, Toshiba TruBrite HD and LED backlighting.

This means the screen is 3d compatible so you can see 3d on the screen with DLP or polarized or shutter (all are special and rare) glasses.
Therefore the notebook is 3D ready.

You will need such glasses in order to watch 3D content.

Hoping that someone can help me.
I have had the above machine now for approx 2 months and it is so unbelievably slow. It has 6GB ram and a dual core processor and was bought to replace a 4 year old other notebook.

It constantly hangs while loading pages. farmville being the worst offender, however it happens with all pages.
I am at a complete loss as to why what should be a quite capable machine cannot cope with the most basic of tasks that an old Dell has no problems with at all.

I have searched the forums and have read about possible software conflicts, however all i have loaded is AVG software.

If someone could please point me in the right direction, I'm now seriously thinking of contacting Toshiba for my money back this machine is that bad.

Answer:Performance issues with Satellite C660D-181

I know what you mean? I think I can help you?
I had a similar problem with new notebook? the point is that many different applications run in the background and this might slow down the performance. The CPU and RAM might be overloaded. In your case I would recommend disabling some not necessary processes.

But first of all download and install the CCleaner. This is free software which allows you to clean the registry and remove the garbage from system.

Then start the msconfig and switch to the tab called ?Startup?.
Here you will find all processes which are loaded at the startup, while booting up the windows.

Remove the mark in order to disable the process.
If you don?t know exactly what is controlled by the single process, don?t disable this.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite C660D-10D with Windows 7. I bought it 6 months ago and in the beginning, my webcam was working properly, with the 640 resolution. Now, the image of the webcam is very blur, the resolution is only 320*240 and I can't change it, because this is the only option. I re-installed the driver, but the problem is still the same.

What can I do to fix it?

Answer:Satellite C660D-10D - Low resolution of webcam

The notebook supports a 0.3M Pixel web camera and the supported image sizes are:
160X120, 176X144, 320X240(QQVGA), 352X288, 640X480(VGA)
You can also record the movie in 320x240 and 640x480.
So as you can see the hardware supports the higher resolution.

I?ve no idea why the other values are locked? possibly something wrong in the registry or similar?

I though new webcam software installation could fix this? maybe you should uninstall the webcam software firstly and then should clean the registry using CCleaner and then could install the software once again? otherwise in worst case you will need to reinstall the OS

I started system recovery via F8 on my Satellite C660D-15X and when it started the process where the command box starts up with the "X drive" process I accidently touched keys on the laptop and it froze so I decided to restart the computer and I ended up with the message

"BOOTMGR is missing
press ctrl - alt - del to restart"

There was no discs which came with my computer but I did do a backup of the recovery discs when I first turned on the laptop out of the box originally although these discs dont do nothing?

What do I need to do to fix my computer or should I just take it to pcworld and let them do it?

Answer:Satellite C660D-15X - Bootmgr is missing

> There was no discs which came with my computer but I did do a backup of the recovery discs when I first turned on the laptop out of the box originally although these discs dont do nothing?
That means you have created the Toshiba recovery disk using Toshiba recovery media creator or what have you done exactly?

This bootmgr error message means that the boot manager of Windows is corrupt and therefore you have to reinstall Windows. You can do this with Toshiba recovery disk that can restore the original out of box settings.

Everything what you have to do is booting from recovery disk and follow the screen instructions. All drivers and tools will be installed automatically.

I'm trying to improve a Toshiba Satellite laptop for a friend of mine who says the laptop just isn't pulling its weight when doing things like watching films, etc.

I've noticed that the processor in the laptop is a 1.3GHz dual core AMD E Series chip.
I've also noticed that the chip has Radeon shader clocks on it as well, so it's not as simple as just swapping it for a faster CPU that runs on the same socket.

I was wondering if there's a list of compatible processors somewhere which I could use as a reference.

I believe the chip that's in the laptop at the moment is an E300.
I've done some digging and apparently there's an E450 CPU which operates on the same 18 Watts and has the 80 shader clocks and other similar features, but has the a core speed of 1.6GHz.

Before I attempt to buy and fit a CPU like that, I want to make sure that it will work in the laptop and that there aren't any better CPUs I should be using instead. Please advise.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Satellite C660D-1GD Compatible Processors

CPU upgrade is always tricky because its not supported officially by any notebook manufacturer.
Therefore you can do that but just at your own risk.

The notebook supports AMD A50M chipset and as far as I know the C660D/C665D/Pro C660D Series is based on a Dual Core/Quad Core Processor series with AMD Champlain core CPU.

CPUs with Champlain core can be identified by CPU ID.
CPU id numbers of Champlain CPUs are 100F53 and 100F63. e_processors

However, first of all you should ensure that chipset would support the new CPU. If it does, then there would be still an question regarding the BIOS support.
Unfortunately, there are no details if BIOS would support other CPUs since such upgrades are not supported? so I see just one option for you: you need to test it at your own risk?
