Satellite C70D - How to boot from DVD

Question: Satellite C70D - How to boot from DVD

Just bought a Satellite C70D with Win 8.1. Everything works (as far as I know until know), except boot from DVD. I disabled in the bios the Secure Boot and changed the boot order to DVD first, then USB and then HDD. The DVD drive starts, but then it skips to the HDD and Windows is started. First time I tried there was a message like "DVD boot not supported" or something like that.
The DVD is bootable, so that is not the problem.
I would like to install Linux Mint alongside Windows.
Anyone solved this problem already?

Preferred Solution: Satellite C70D - How to boot from DVD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite C70D - How to boot from DVD

Update: changing from UEFI to CMS in the BIOS Advanced tab makes it possible to boot from DVD, but Windows won't boot anymore.... Is there any possibility to boot from DVDE and still be able to start Windows as well?

After a regular shutdown I cannot boot the system anymore.
System starts but does not boot.

Referring to the manual (section 6, solutions of problems) I tried to hit [F12] after power on but nothing happened.
Same when hitting [F2].

My impression is that something failed on hard disk drive.

P.S. system has Win10 installed.

Hello everybody,
the Toshiba Sat C70D-B-317 (PSCLEE01L009FR) is on it's way and I don't have it for the moment but I would like to know if there is a way to add some Ram to this machine without opening everything?
Also, is it possible to change the HD in the future in the same conditions?

sorry, but it's my first PC laptop and as a Mac user I'm completely lost with all these models and different serial numbers.

I thank you in advance for your answer.

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-317 - Ram upgrade

1. yes you can upgrade your RAM, This laptop has 2 slots with one 4GB standard so if you would you can put one more 4GB. With 2x4 you have Dual-channel and that works much faster than single

I don't know if your HDD can e upgraded. When it's not possible you can always buy a external HDD

I hope i helped you

I want to upgrade RAM with additional 4 GB but at the bottom of the notebook there is no RAM cover so I don't have access to the RAM slots.
I don't want to cancel valid warranty so I don't want to open it alone.
What should I do ???

I have a C70D-A-107 and want to speed up this notebook. Already placed 4gb extra memory so the notebook has now 8gb internal. I doubt whether it is usefull to put in 2x8gb. I think the processor is just to slow. It has a AMD E1-2100 inside. Is it possible to put in another (faster) processor?

Answer:Speed-up Satellite C70D-A-107

The Satellite C70D-A-107 was equipped with an AMD Essentials E1-2100 Accelerated CPU (1,00 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache)
It’s not the fastest CPU therefore the notebook performance isn’t the best…

But CPU upgrade isn’t officially supported by notebook manufacturer... therefore I don’t think that you will be able to upgrade the CPU…

I read about successful Intel CPU upgrades but did not meet anyone who was able to perform an upgrade with an AMD CPU

My wive purchase this computer coupple of months ago. It was from the beginning ferry slow on windows 8
The wurst laptop we ever had. We feel robbed of our money.

2 months ago we started with Ubuntu. It Still slow. IS there anybody with the same problems?

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-108 is very slow

Hi Marco

I don't have this notebook model and cannot confirm what you wrote but fact is that almost all new notebooks are pretty slow at the beginning. Many applications are set to start with Windows and this, of course, slows down boot time.
Windows updates are also set to automatic so in the background the machine will download and install many updates so this will slow down your machine rapidly.

In my opinion you should install original OS that you got with this machine and optimize it a bit.
Remove all useless stuff, change start-up option and disable automatic Windows updates.
In the past I have noticed that original preinstalled antivirus is also responsible for notebook?s performance so I don't use original preinstalled application but my own version of Avir Antivir and it runs perfectly.

Check all these options and I hope your machine will run much better than before.

Can someone help me out with it?

Answer:Need some drivers for my Satellite C70D-B-10U

According notebook specification your machine was delivered with preinstalled Win8.1 64BIT ML.
Original preinstalled version is perfectly configured with all necessary drivers.

The question is: what are you doing with your machine?
Do you try to use some older Windows version?

Good evening,

I'm sorry to disturb,
but I find myself in a situation to which I find no solution,
that's why I come here asking for some help.

A friend has just purchased the following laptop:
- Satellite C70D-B-307

but the worry is that apparently it is impossible to have access to the HDD recovery to execute the factory restoration.
I try all possible solutions that I find on the web and none of it works.

what to do ?

does Toshiba sell the recovery DVDs that will restore the computer to its factory state?

Thank you very much .

I'm looking for a new display for my Toshiba Satellite C70D-A-11K!

Please help!

Answer:Need new display for my Satellite C70D-A

The Satellite C70D-A-11K was equipped with the 17.3" LED color LCD panel with the supporting max resolution of 1600 x 900 px
You should be able to order such display panel from local Toshiba authorized service provider or you could check some 3rd part online dealers who provide compatible notebook parts…

As I mention above: you should look for the 17.3" panels.

I picked up a brand new c70d-b-10u today from a well known retailer.
I turned it on, set the language, gave a computer name, hooked up to a wi fi and then it asked for Other User Password!

I never entered a password to start with so why is it asking for one?

I cannot get to the shop again until next week and urgently need to get up and running.

Any ideas greatly received.

Answer:Brand new Satellite C70D-B-10U wants a password?

Try to recover the notebook once again using the HDD recovery option.

The recovery procedure would reset the notebook back to factory settings… usually after that no passwords should be set…

My girlfriend bought me a new Toshiba laptop C70D-B-10U (my second Toshiba), it is a good laptop apart from the speakers they are terrible. I didn't want my first post to be a complaint but, Toshiba cut corners when it put the speakers in this series of laptops.

Or have I not set them right has anyone else had this problem, any ideas or solutions thank you.

Answer:Bad Speakers on Satellite C70D-B-10UM

I think your notebook has only small stereo speakers and the sound is not the best. I have Satellite S50-B with Harman/kardon speakers and sound is really good.

You can try to change sound options but if you want to have better sound I’m afraid you need external speakers, Maybe BT speakers.

Hi All,

I have an Satellite C70D-A-11D ... when I use once the FN Key to do a Print Screen or use the Screen-Zoom on the Space Key...

I am not able to use the Keynumbers 1 to 4 neither the space Key to enter a space between two always change between the bigger screen solution or the normal solution...

I only can change the FN Key again after change the settings in Display settings and after a reboot...
So I cant use FN without a reset with the F1 to F12 Key use and a reboot...

Normaly the FN Key works only if it is pressed...if not the normal Function of the Keys 1 to 4 or F1 to F12 will work if configured in the settings, or not?

What to do?

Kind regards

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-11D Function Key deactivate after use

First of all you can change between the special function key mode (without pressing FN key) or normal (standard) mode (Hold Fn first to use standard F1-F12 functions.)

This function can be changed in BIOS.
In BIOS go to Advanced -> System configuration

Check this option.

Hi all,

My grandmother recently bought this Toshiba, mostly i recommend people a Toshiba but this is going to far.

I wasn't aware that she bought a laptop untill she called me and said she needs help because she never worked with such a slow computer as this Toshiba.

So my question is

How much logic does Toshiba has? I mean putting 6GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM ( ok nice for a casual laptop ) doesn't quite fit with a >>1GHz<< processor. for the rest the specs aren't terrible.

Can somebody explain me why this laptop has a 1GHz processor with 6GB of RAM. this doensn't makes sence at all

So I bought this laptop a few months ago.
For the past few weeks the Laptop stopped playing sound.
I watched a stream in Chrome.

So actually I should be able to see the sound playing in the mixer.
But I wasn't able to play any sound or get any deflection in the mixer.

Then I installed Speccy and as this administration window popped up a sound was played and it worked.

I have no idea why the sound stopped working and why it started again.
Is someone able to help me?

I am using Windows 8.1

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-11D - no sound, random

The main thing is that you have sound again. It is not easy to say what was wrong there.
Have you installed some updates or anything else that can be responsible for this sound issue?

I have a Satellite C70D-A-114...

i hardly used it because it was slow

so i wanted to sell it

first i wanted to set it back to factory settings

doing that, in that process i seem to have deleted all files

so now i get message no bootable disc etc.

Tried everything, there is simply no recovery file

So where can i find such a file for free? It's just not normal that it is not on the site.

Answer:Need recovery files for my Satellite C70D-A-114

All you can find for free are all drivers, tools and utilities. Original recovery image (software package) is not for free and if you need it you must order recovery disc directly by Toshiba.

You can order it on

By the way: in user’s manuals document is clearly described how you can create recovery installation disc. I’m wondering you didn’t make it in the past.

Answer:Can I replace the HDD in my Satellite C70D-B -00P model with an SSD?

Generally speaking yes, you can do this but problem is that your notebook model doesn't have HDD cover at the bottom side.
To have full access to the HDD the bottom cover must be removed completely but it should be done by authorized service only.

Of course you can try to do it alone but I?m afraid you may lose the warranty.
If possible contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country, explain the situation and ask for help.

I have 2 issues with my new Satellite C70D-B-32U.
When I put it in sleep mode, it does. But after about 5 minutes, it goes automatically to hibernate. This I don't want. And I don't want to disable hibernate, because I do use it when the laptop is not in use for longer periods. The power settings in control panel do not reflect this behaviour. In the settings, I specified that the laptop should never go to hibernate. Hybrid state is disabled.

And secondly, more importantly. Whenever it goes to hibernate, I can only wake it up with the power button. Not with the (internal) keyboard, not with the usb mouse. I would like an option to wake it from hibernate by pressing any key on the keyboard. In bios power on keyboard is set to on. Is there anything else I can change to have this available?
Actually if issue 1 is solved and the laptop stays in sleep mode, this issue is also solved since from sleep I can wake on a mouseclick which is also fine.

The OS is windows 8.1

Hi There,

I have had a Satellite C70D for about 18 months now, but have not used it in the past year as I have been disputing with customer services about the windows licence for the machine as I lost it when I formatted the original hard drive before installing an SSD and they wouldnt send me a copy of it. I have now bitten the bullet and bought a windows 10 licence again. However since building the machine a few days ago, I have been having a couple of issues and as it is now out of warranty, I cannot contact customer support (Who I found unhelpful even when it was in warranty!)

The first issue is when I boot up the machine, occasionally the keyboard will not work, I cannot type the BitLocker pin and I have to remove the battery and press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, this then fixes the issue for a few reboots before it goes again.

The second is that occasionally it will boot up with a red x next to the WiFi symbol, but it detects the WiFi card, usually a reboot fixes this but not always. I have reseated the card and still no avail.

Can anyone shed any light on what may be causing this? The BIOS is up-to-date as are all of the drivers.

Thanks in advance for your help

I have buy a Satellite C70D-A-11T and pass it on Windows 7 64 bits Home Premium.
I install all the drivers and I haven't any problems.

When I want to connect it to my TV for first time, I discover there is no sound on the TV.
I try to go on the speaker (near the clock of windows), right click, sound, first tab (I think it is "Playback" in english... I have a french Windows) and my device (TV) doesn't appear.

I come back on Toshiba Support website to download the last driver "HDMI Audio driver" for my laptop, I connect the cable, and it appear in the sound properties. I select it as my default device and the sound come right from my TV.

Great !

But when I restart my laptop (with or without the HDMI cable), the TV disappear from the list in the sound properties, the only one solution to recover the sound is to reinstall the HDMI Audio Driver.
If I start the driver installation with the "advanced" option, I have the list of drivers to install and I see all drivers are already installed, but the HDMI Audio Driver will be upgraded... I install it and it work until the next restart.

Could you explain me why the version of the driver don't stay on the system, and how to make it work without reinstall it everyday ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi all,

excuse the new thread but I haven't found any answers anywhere online, just speculation and it's for different models.

So I have a C70D-B-10U, running windows 7 64bit pro. When I formatted it and updated everything, it just kept crashing when trying to play back videos on Windows Media Player. I cleaned the inside and replaced thermal paste, updated to even newer drivers, and started using VLC as my default media player. It rarely crashed BUT it always does when I try to start playing games (nothing heavy - League of Legends). Laptop seems to be doing well with memory tests, no faults detected.

I've read that this could be caused by:
Faulty GPUFaulty BatteryFaulty PSUBad Capacitors on the MOBO

Has anyone had any similar experience? I've reinstalled Windows and it's the same story. If it's a motherboard issue, I guess it would be better to just get a new one?

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-10U no warning crash (power, GPU or capacitors)

Update: I decided to test the RAM and it seems like it can't handle 8GB. Both 4GB sticks work on any slot, but when I have all of it on the machine it crashes. Do you think it is a motherboard issue?

Hi there,

I was bought the above model of laptop for an early Christmas present which usually sits down in the living room, my old Satellite Pro sat down there with no issues however with this device the wireless signal is very low and I appear to be having it sitting right next to the wireless router (which is located upstairs in my sons bedroom), I wondered if there's any steps I could take to improve the signal?

It baffles me how a new system has such a poor wireless signal when my old Satellite Pro which was 6 years old had no wireless issues whatsoever.

My other issue is from the moment I switched the laptop on (yesterday when it was delivered) the updates on Windows Update are slow or don't start at all, is this an issue or just normal?

I'd appreciate any help or input at all, thank you.

I have since week 1 Series Toshiba Satellite C70D-A-11E notebook,
Unfortunately, I am at the moment not really satisfied with the image.. game lags because my graphics.

My question is where can you find how much I consume from the 4 GB.

And where I can set that I consume more or less. since it is a separable memory yes.

My English is not perfect. hope someone understands.

Please reply

Answer:Satellite C70D-A: game lags due to graphic chip?

Well, I?m wondering why you purchased a unit with an internal (part of CPU) graphic chip if you want use the notebook for gaming?

The notebook supports the AMD Radeon HD 8400 graphics which is part of AMD Quad-Core A6-5200 CPU.
Such GPU is similar to Intel HD GPU which is also part of Intel CPUs.

Such internal graphic cards are not really designed for gaming? of course you would be able to run and to play a game but don?t expect too much?

Latest driver is installed.

Message was edited: posting has been translated

Answer:ODD on my Satellite C70D-A-11E wont read DVDs anymore

If optical disc drive is installed properly maybe is reading lens dirty. Try to clean it up.

Other way, if your ODD can read CDs but not DVDs it can also be hardware malfunction. The reading lens cannot be calibrated properly and cannot find the right position to read DVD media.

In such case ODD must be exchanged.

Try to clean lens up and check if the problem persists. If yes contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-306 - 2 unknown devices in device list

There is a good method in order to find out what drivers are missing.
First of all you should check the DEV (device) and VEN (vendor) IDs

Here is an short instruction how to find this details:

Knowing the device and vendor ID, it should not be a big deal to get the right drivers.

At the other hand you should install also additional Toshiba software (Toshiba System Driver) released for Win 8.1
Please note also that there are two Win 8.1 driver areas: ?Win 8.1 update? and ?Win 8.1 32bit/64bit? categories
In case you would not find all drivers within the Win 8.1 update check also the Win 8.1 32bit/64bit categories.

Hello everybody,
brand new C70D two days old, if I want to look a Youtube video full screen after a few minutes, the C70D stops, blue screen with a message : your computer gets a problem, we collect informations ect.
After a restart the same problem comes again a few minutes later.
I have 14 days to accept this machine, but if it's a graphic card problem I prefer to return it to the vendor.

I thank you in advance for your answer.

Answer:Satellite C70D sops after a few minutes with YouTube full screen

Would be grateful for any advice to remove the back panel.

I've removed battery, ~16 screws + 1 tiny screw at the optical drive and whilst it does 'unclick' everywhere else, there seems to be something stopping the panel being removed just above the battery compartment and don't want to force it.

Even our IT guys at work cannot work it out.

PLEASE new laptop is very slow so have purchased RAM but can't access the back.

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-30D: How to access back panel after ~16 screws removed

At first I must say that you should not remove bottom cover alone because it will cancel valid warranty. If there is no RAM cover, RAM should be exchanged or upgraded by authorized personal only.

I know every of us think it is easy to do and want to do this alone.
What I know is follow:
2 screws in the middle are fixing the keyboard. What must be removed are 14 screws and small flat screw at the optical drive. That’s all. There is no other hidden screw.

Of course there are also small plastic holders and bottom cover must be removed very gently.

I've only noticed today that when I turn up my laptop's volume up to about 28 (even with headphones in), there's this high pitch noise that comes from the speakers. And I'm sure it's the speakers and not anything else.
But the sound is sort of that real ear-killing noise so I can't listen to it for long. It even sometimes sounds like thousands of crickets - a complete nightmare

But with my volume at any level below 28 I can listen to whatever through headphones without the sound bothering me.

Does anyone have any ideas for a solution? I do know a thing or two about computers but nothing about anything extremely technical and I'm not sure if I want to take it apart, unless I really have to.

If you could help me it would be appreciated!

I got a wireless mouse and so, using F5 disabled the touchpad. Now I can't get it to work again. I was told, by the support robot/person here, to turn the laptop off and then to remove the battery and AC adapter before pressing and holding the power button on the laptop for 10 seconds. Then I should replace the AC adapter, leaving the battery out, before turning the machine on and then immediately start tapping the F2 key. This will take me into BIOS. Once there and the BIOS menu has loaded, tap the F9 key and then press Enter. This will reset BIOS to the default settings. To exit the BIOS, tap the F10 key and then press Enter. This will restart the laptop.

The trouble is I cannot do any of this as the battery is does not seem to be removable, by the customer at least, on this product.
Had I been able to achieve this and found the cure not to have happened that I should reinstall the touchpad driver.

As I cannot do what is advised, in correct sequence, I am at a loss as to just what I should do. HELP PLEASE.

Answer:Touchpad on Satelite C70D-12U not working

You dont need to remove the battery, you can do a hard reset by holding down the power button for 20 seconds.

Does the touchpad work in the BIOS?
If no, there may be a hardware problem.
If yes, uninstall the touchpad driver in Control Panel, then let Windows Update install the new driver.

I have two C70D's. Both died within weeks of each other, and went back for repair with RepairTech, under warranty.

Both machines failed to boot, with an error code(?) of three flashes of the power button.

One machine came back within a week, fully working.

The other took three weeks, came back with a change of motherboard (they say). I unpacked it, and it was still not booting, still flashing three times on the power button.

I phoned repairtech, immediately, sent it back, the next day.

Today it came home, again, I opened wont boot, and does the same three flashes on the power light.

Back on the phone. They've booked it in again, saying maybe it's a peripheral. The only peripheral is the power adaptor. I have two. It doesn't work with either.

I believe the problem is battery related, but it's an internal battery so I can't open it without voiding the warranty.

Has anyone else had problems with RepairTech? Does anyone know if this is a battery problem?

Does someonw know which boot key combination is working for the L850-1k0 ?
I flashed a modded bios, that first worked, then changed settings for the graphic card, shut down and now the laptop is with black screen (also at external monitor on VGA or HDMI).

Now I try to reflash the original BIOS (InsydeH20 6.8) with wincrisis ( which should boot from usb, which would be indicated by the flasing light on the usb), but this needs certain key combinations held during powering on, that differ: I tried with the ones I found googling for similar models, Fn + Esc, Fn + Esc, Windows + F, Windows + B, Fn + B - but nothing worked, no activity at the usb.

So does someone know the working combination f?r this model L850-1k0?
I did not find something searching for it online!

Help would be very appreciated!

I have a Toshiba P200-17c running vista machine and it wont boot up, hangs on boot screen. I
have used iso image to boot from and have run disk repair, makes no difference.
Machine wont get beyond microsoft loading page (with yellowish bar scrolling).

My question is: how can i replace / repair the boot.ini to get machine to boot up or disable all apps / drivers for apps in order to get machine to boot.

I did not (my own fault) create a back up or restore disk.
After booting machine from cd, running system repair and attempting to run system restore also doesn't work...

Can anyone advise on a way to replace/repair boot.ini or deactivate drivers?

Trying to avoid paying a further ?30 pounds for a recovery disk as i have already paid for licensed software, not sure why.
If paid for you don't get a Vista copy with machine....

Tried booting Vista in safe mode? You can access this mode by pressing F8 before Vista starts. In this mode noe drivers are loaded.

To be honest the issue sounds strange to me? usually the notebook shuts down because of the higher temperature but in your case I doubt that this could be related to an over heating issue.

You could try to remove the HDD and could try to access the BIOS.

Hope someone can help me please.

I have a friends Toshiba Z930 Ultra book.

When you boot the laptop it does not boot but comes up with the meesage PXE-E61 : Media Test Failure.

This is a Windows 8 Laptop 3rd Gen i7.

I can boot from HIREN's and the Hard Drive is found and is selectable and all files appear to be intact.

I have gone into the BIOS and discovered that Boot mode is set at CSM Mode.
However Windows 8 requires the boot mode to be UEFI.

I can not find how to change the Boot Mode from CSM to UEFI.
The option is greyed out and can not be selected.

Answer:Satellite Z930 - Boot mode set to CSM Boot and Greyed Out

Try load setup defaults. I'm not aware if Z930 has UEFI Support but I guess. Mabye there is some kind of superuserpassword you haven't entered to gain full access to bios functions.

The failure is about LAN/PXE Boot, nothing to worry about.

Win8 doesn't essentially requiere UEFI. it also works with CSM, but may need other bootloader and BCD container to run current installation.

i have an Satellite A30 and sometimes it does not boot.
After powering on, not even the BIOS starts,
even though sometimes the BIOS starts, but OS does not load.

I figured out that its related to USB-devices connected at boot time.
If no USB-devices are connected, it boots without problems.
Even if boot hangs, as soon as you disconnect the USB-devices BIOS starts.
Its ok to connect the USB-devices later, once the system has started.
I disabled "booting from removable devices" and "boot from network",
just in case, but it makes no difference.

BIOS is newest version (1.70) and it happens with all kinds of USB-devices,
printer, mouse and (self-powered) external USB hard-disk.

Is this a known issue?
Is there any known workaround?

Answer:Satellite A30 does not boot with USB-device connected at boot time

I don?t know why it happens but it has to do with the BIOS.
The same happened on my old notebook. I could not boot up my unit while the USB printer was enabled and connected.
The only solution is to disconnect the external USB device during the boot process.

Ps; you should check if the booting order in the BIOS was set to HDD firstly.

Hello to everyone

I got a Toshiba C850D-140 laptop, bought about one-two years ago. I decided to reinstall Windows 7 and I began the whole process. Everything was good, the "expanding windows files" bullet finished successfully and then the laptop restarted automatically. Then the problems started.

No Toshiba logo showed up, only an underscore at the upper left corner, non blinking, just laying there. After about two seconds the system restarted and the underscore showed up. This process loops forever. I can enter BIOS menu, I can enter boot list menu but the problem is that the laptop cannot boot from any device. Neither HDD, nor USB nor DVD. The DVD contains genuine Windows 7, working and tested on other PC's but the laptop refuses to boot from it.

Any ideas?
Thanks beforehands

Answer:Satellite C850D-104 - no HDD boot, no ODD boot, just black screen

From my knowledge the ?blinking underscore? means a HDD problem.
But you said, the underscore does not blink but its ?lying?.

In some cases this could mean an RAM malfunction. However this is just an idea.

Question: did you set the BIOS to default? In BIOS press F9 to get default settings and pressing F10 save the changes.

Is HDD listed on the first BIOS page (HDD name, size,)???
If not, this means that HDD is faulty.

*Model: Satellite M40-237 (PSM40E)*

I decided to reinstall windows, my hard drive is currently formatted. So as usual, boot from Windows CD is needed to start instalation but it simply won't boot. I never had problems like this, boot always worked. It is like there is no bootable CD in the drive (but it is bootable and it is working on another PC).

- i have the latest BIOS
- BIOS detects optical drive and everything is ok, HDD is primary ODD is secondary
- i tried selecting boot priority with F12 and/or setting it from BIOS, but it won't work either way

What could be the problem here? Drive not working properly (i hope it is that and not something worse)? I had some problems with the drive i before (writing...), but it reads CD/DVD's normally and like i said boot was working fine before. I cleaned the lens a little, disconected it and put it back. Is there anything more i can do ?

I am trying to find someone who has the drive that fits so i can try with that one, but who knows when will that be.

Now, here is the second question i have related to this. Because my laptop is practically useless currently (i can't install anything), is it possible to boot from:
a) external USB optical drive
b) USB flash drive

Bios on this laptop has no USB boot option, it has HDD / CD / FDD / network. But I've red somewhere that FDD = USB if legacy emulation is enabled.

If that is correct i should just plug the USB drive and select FDD as boot option ? If i can't find U... Read more

Have you original recovery CDs? Have you tried to use them for OS installation?
Power up your notebook with installations CD in ODD and press C button several times. It should force ODD to be first bootable device. Please post the result.

As far as I know if you want to use external USB ODD you need DOS driver for it. The drive will not be recognized automatically. You must start your notebook with DOS floppy start disk, load DOS driver for external ODD and when you have access you can see the content of CD/DVD and start installations procedure.

I don't know how but my Grandson has seriously broken his Satellite C660-2EV

Boot from HDD - Boot Mgr not found

Boot to recovery partition - Boot Mgr not found.

Boot from a (Generic) Windows 7 install disk - boots, starts to install, finds it has not got a required driver (but doesn't tell me what it is). Allows me to access drives C:, D:, E: and X:

Boot from Toshiba recovery DVD. White bar gets around 25% across screen then stops with "You have removed USB media during install" (or something like that, laptop currently in pieces).

Removed and re-seated memory and DVD drive. Removed HDD, plugged into my PC through USB adaptor and scanned the two visible partitions (300Gb each) at bad sector level. No problems.

Help! I'm out of options.

Laptop must be (basically) functional as it will boot from (non-Toshiba) DVD.

HDD seems OK when checked externally and from (Non-Toshiba) boot

What's left?

Answer:Satellite C660-2EV doesn't boot - Boot Mgr not found

All you have done is right and I would make the same tests.

Set BIOS to default settings and test it with another HDD, if you can obtain one for testing purposes.
I cannot say for sure but somehow I feel HDD is the troublemaker.
Try to install original recovery DVD on new HDD.

Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)

The problem started yesterday, the computer was going slow as an application closed, so I held the off button untill the pc turned off. When I restarded the laptop it went to a screen saying: Start windows normally or repair Windows (recomended)

When started normally it just hangs at a blank screen, the repair Windows recommends a system restore to earlier point which didnt work. As it just hangs again. I tried pressing F8 and starting in safe mode but again it just hangs. Then after a few times trying safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After this the computer goes past the Toshiba logo screen with F2 and F12 options (which both still work), and then it comes up boot failed then goes blank and comes with boot failed bootfailed with some numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box titled boot menu with 4 options. These are
HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX

If I press ESC it goes through the bootfailed loop and ends up at same screen, if I press enter on "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then it quickly comes back to screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] is failed.

I dont understand why it got worse over time. Can anyone think of why this has happend and more importantly how can I get my pc working again? Note: holding 0 then starting does nothing for me atm

regards, Matthew

I would really, really appreciate any help on this one.

On Saturday I bought a Toshiba A210-17I. On Monday, I plugged it in, to charge the battery and when it was charged, switched on - Vista completed the installation and everything seemed absolutely fine. I powered off overnight but this morning, I am getting problems :-(

When I power up, the system appears to boot and in due course, I see Windows is Loading Files, followed by the "(c) Microsoft Corporation" message with the progress bar. This scrolls across the screen for a while, the HDD light flickers a few times and then the screen goes completely blank and it is as though the laptop has gone into some sort of hibernation mode - the Power light (O with a vertical line) remains on.

Exactly the same happens if I boot from the "Product Recovery" DVD - having pressed [F12] and selected to boot from the DVD Drive.
The installed OS is Windows Vista Home Premium OEM.
The battery is fully charged.
Memtest86+ v1.70 hasn't found any errors.

Any suggestions as to what I can try next? I don't have any data on the system so I don't care if everything is refreshed, I just don't know hoe to proceed. Incidentally, I do have access to (legitimate) copies of Windows 2000, 32-bit & 64-bit XP & 64-bit Vista if that will help in any way?

Very many thanks for any useful feedback ;-)

Answer:Satellite A210-17I doesn't boot as it should - actually, it will not boot

It seems that I have now resolved this problem. I couldn't get anywhere using the Toshiba "Product Recovery" disk (which quite frankly, I might as well throw away since it doesn't appear to work) or a Vista installation disk.

In an effort to get round the problem, I tried installing XP Home. I booted from an installation disk, deleted the "Data" partition and reformatted it to install XP onto. XP reported that the laptop needed to reboot to complete the reformat (not seen that before). When it rebooted, out of curiosity, I allowed the laptop to try loading Vista - it started to do so and then announced that it needed to correct a problem. I left it for a while and when I went back to it, Vista was running again.

The only thing that I can think of was that the MBR must have gotten corrupted.

It is most unlikely to have been a Virus because the laptop had only been on the Internet for a few moments to complete the initial setup / registration - after which it went wrong.

I had thought of proceeding to load XP so that I could have a dual-boot system - however, setting up a system to dual-boot Vista & XP doesn't seem anything like as simple as dual-booting XP & Linux, so I will forget about that for the present.

So last night I was using my Toshiba Satellite laptop.
I don't know many specifics because i'm not very good with laptops. Here is where the problems starts.

So after I finished I shut it down.
The next morning I wake up, it wouldn't start windows.
I'm currently using windows 7. So anyways it tells me to shut down. I boot it again and then it only gives me 2 options: startup repair or run windows normally.
When i try run windows normally it says "starting windows" but it never boots.

Then when i try startup repair it goes to attempting repairs and i've been doing that for 8 hours and no luck. it says a recent hardware or software removal may have cause it. But i've had nothing plugged in except the charger.

It looks like the Windows OS was muddled up? I?m not quite sure why but such things happens simply?
However, you can try to recover the notebook using the HDD recovery option. But this will work only, if you didn?t format the HDD and didn?t delete the HDD recovery partition.

So try to power up the unit, press F8, choose repair my computer and then choose Toshiba recovery.
Note; this will format the currently system partition which means that you will lose the files on the C partition.

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite C50-A-1JV laptop which has no operating system. I tried to install windows XP but I get the following error: No bootable device -- please restart system. I turn on the laptop, put the Windows XP CD inside then restart then I press F12, I set the boot order to ODD-->HDD from the menu then restart again then press f12 then click on ODD but it won't boot.

How do I fix this?

Answer:Satellite C50-A-1JV won't boot from ODD (CD or DVD)

Windows XP is old operating system and not supported for this machine. Even Windows 7 is not supported for all machines produced in last 12 months.
To be honest there is no sense to try to install WXP on your new machine.

Please visit Toshiba download page on and check which operating systems are supported. If possible I recommend you to install Win7 64bt.

I have a A30-203 notebook. When powering on all front lights indicates but the unit does not bootup

Answer:Satellite A30-203 does not boot up

Try this:
Remove the battery, disconnect the AC adaptor from the notebook and wait a little bit? about 1 hour.
Then connect both parts again and check if the notebook would boot up.

If this will not help then I assume that an serious hardware problem cause this and you will need someone who could check all the notebook parts like RAM, CPU or motherboard.

Yesterday my Satellite C50 would not boot. When powered on, it displays the Toshiba logo and then the little circles just keep spinning.

I have booted in recovery mode and ran chkdsk but there are no errors on the disc.

When I then rebooted it, it said the following:

Preparing Automatic Repair
Diagnosing your PC
Checking disc for errors
Attempting automatic repair

Then at this stge the little circles just keep spinning.

I have booted it in safe mode and enabled boot logging.

Attached is the NTBTLOG file

Many thanks,

Answer:My Satellite C50-A-1DV does not boot up

Power OFF the notebook
Then press power button and immediately after that press F12 button
Then you should see a screen similar to this one:

Then I would recommend you to choose the HDD Recovery option…. The last option in this menu.
This would start the HDD recovery procedure and would recover the notebook back to factory settings…

Hi. i have just acquired a free secondhand A30 for my daughter, I know nothing of its history. When I start it up (On either AC or battery), the lights come on, the fans start up, it has a couple of goes at starting the dvd drive then the fans go off and it just sits there with the power light and HDD light on. I get nothing on the screen during all of this. Can anybody help with a possible cause.Thanks.

Answer:Satellite A30 won't boot up

HI Chris,

When you first power on your A30 you should see a 'Toshiba' splash screen whcih is displayed while the BIOS is loading. Following this (usually after about 10 seconds or so) the screen should go black and then you should see the initial loading screen for your operating system.

If you see neither screen then there is possibly a problem with your display in which case you will need to have the unit checked/repaired by a Toshiba Authorised Service Partner. If, however, you do get the Toshiba splash screen after which the display stays black then it is possible that the previous owner has wiped the hard drive and you will need to obtain either a recovery CD for the unit or a Retail copy of Windows which you will then need to install.

Answer:Satellite L40 does not boot

Remove the battery and try to start your notebook with AC power supply only.

I`ve tried removing the CMOS Battery, still won't bootup!
Note:I am Living in East Libya, TOSHIBA ASP 800 km away from me

Best regards

Answer:Satellite P10-792 won't boot up

Check the voltage of the AC Adapter, if its giving less than 19volts, it could be faulty.

Otherwise it sounds like it needs a new mainboard. You might be able to find one on eBay.

Answer:Satellite C50-A-1DV won't boot

Its very annoying if notebook start to malfunction but the good news is that warranty is valid and in case of hardware problem, the unit should be fixed free of charge.

Anyway, try some kind of universal workaround which sometimes helps to fix different problems.
You should disconnect the AC adaptor and should remove the battery.
Then you should press and hold the power button; let?s say 30-50 sec should be good enough.
After that connect both parts and try to power up the unit.

I keep finger crossed that this simply workaround would help you

I have what has uptil now been a fairly reliable Toshiba Satellite M60. A few weeks ago I tried to boot up and the power light came on, the disc light flicked momentarily and the fan went on. Within 2 to 3 seconds the fan stopped, the disc light also went out. During this the screen never ever came on at all, ie the Toshiba splash page did not come up. The computer will not budge from that position, its almost dead.

However...... if I leave it and come back to it maybe the next day the machine boots up perfectly. Wont happen again for a few days then happen again. Its getting most annoying and I wish to get the problem rectified. Anyone have any experience of this? And any help on fixing it before I send it back to Toshiba?

My problem is that knowing my luck if I send it back to Toshiba, they wont experience this intermitent fault and thus wont be able to fix something they cant see is wrong.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite M60-164 sometimes boot, sometimes not

This sounds very strange?. Looks like hardware would malfunction? motherboard????
Who knows? it?s not easy to say without running any tests? you know.

Did you try to update the BIOS?? Check if Toshiba has published a new version. But be careful.
Be sure that you use the right BIOS and right BIOS update procedure.

Anyway, if the problem persists you should definitely contact the service provider in your country for notebook check.

I have a Satellite Pro A10 which has stopped responding. If I have the HDD connected I get an' insert System Disk..' message, I have checked the HDD with a 2.5" USB Connector in another computer and it appears OK.

The laptop will not allow me to change the Boot order to select CD-Rom so that I can try the recovery disks. I can get into the BIOS but the Boot Priority option is not selectable.

Any help appreciated.

Answer:Satellite Pro A10 will not boot from HDD

many notebooks will boot from USB when pressing U on startup, or C for CD-ROM.
Try it. Maybe it works.

I'd be grateful if anyone could suggest what may be wrong with my laptop;

Sometimes it just won't boot up - lights up, fan comes on, then it shuts down.
Other times it boots up, but screen is black.
Most times it starts after a few attempts - but now I don't want to turn it off!

Answer:Re: Satellite M40 does not boot up sometimes

Different reasons might be responsible for that.
Faulty RAM, motherboard issue, higher temperature, etc?

In your case I would recommend checking the cooling modules? you should clean the modules and should remove the dust.
The dust might prevent the fans from working with best performance and this leads to higher temperature which affects the internal parts.
I clean the fans from time to time using compressed air spray.

At the other hand it might be a mobo issue? but this cannot be solved by common user? just an ASP might be able to detect the fault and to resolve this?

Hi, I have had several problems over the past couple of weeks with my Toshiba laptop. I decided to back up all my files and use the recovery disk to clear everything out. I put in the disk and then changed the BIOS so the CD/DVD drive was first. (I hope the Toshiba L10 Series Tools and Utilities CD-ROM, is the right disk)

This just loaded windows as normal and I can not seem to get the disk to boot. If you have any advice for me please reply asap.

Thanks in advance :) Ashley

Answer:Cannot boot up from the CD on Satellite L10

You have in the included and delivery a recovery CD, Tools and Utilities CD-ROM, is not the same. Use the recovery CD for your Backup.

I'm getting the following messages...

WHEN BOOTING FROM HDD: "Invalid partition table"

Consequently, even though I have the recovery CDs the computer cannot read them.

I tried changing boot order to no avail. Created a Bart's bootable CD which works in my other computer but not in this laptop. Are there special drivers I need for this CD-ROM?
I am at wits end on this one.

Answer:Satellite M45: Cannot boot from CD-ROM or HDD

I think your partition on the HDD is corrupt and therefore you cannot boot from the HDD.
In such cases the HDD should be completely formatted and then you could try to install the OS.

It seems also that your drive cannot recognize the bootable CD (WinXP???) and therefore it?s not possible to boot from the drive.
Well, it?s really stupid situation :_| really stupid!

However, did you try booting from other CD? For example original Microsoft Windows CD?
If not I would recommend to do it and possibly the drive will be able to read the other CD.
If not so I think the drive must be checked. Possibly it?s also corrupt.

I have the above, and it will not boot from cd/dvd. I know the cd/dvd is bootable and works ok. I can boot from FDD and access the cd/dvd no problem, but this dose not allow me to load windows XP. So its not the drive or cd/dvd. So whats the problem?

Answer:Satellite Pro A60 will not boot from CD/DVD

How did you try to boot from the CD drive?
Did you try to press the ?C? button immediately after the notebook starting?

You could also press F12. The boot menu should appear and you should be able to choose the drive as booting device.

Hi all,

I have a Satellite m40-244 with a DVD drive which is unfortunately out of service.

I would like to know if it is possible to boot from a USB key so as to reinstall Windows or Linux. In the BIOS, there are only the options HDD, FDD, CD-ROM and LAN.

Does someone know how to boot from a USB key? I tried a external USB DVD Drive, it's not working. I don't know if I am doing the right way.

Answer:Satellite M40-244 --> Boot from USB key

As far as I know this is not possible because the BIOS of M40 does not support this!
As you mentioned in your posting; there is only a option for booting from HDD, ODD, LAN and USB FDD (diskette)

my Satellite L40-10U wont boot up. I switch it on, fan, DVD-ROM, battery LED works. Hard drive LED only flashes once (If I'm lucky). The screen is blank, at sunlight I noticed it darkenes when switched on, but no further activity (I tried external, still nothing). I tried also the trick with removing the battery and pushing the power button, then plugging the charger, etc. but still nothing.

Now, I noticed that when I remove the RAMs (or try plugging just once at the time) it still does exactly the same thing, so I want to ensure if it is a problem with dead RAMs? Is there a way to check the RAMs without plugging it to another ntb (i dont have any)?

And what happen at this point? Notebook stays ON or switches OFF automatically?

By the way: check please

Hi everybody,

I experience a curious problem...
The internal hdd crash down. I mounted the hdd into others pc's, no access, not detected in bios...RIP.
That is the starting point of my problem.
So, I decide to replace the hdd. the new one is detected by bios, everything fine but...
I could not boot on usb stick, CD/DVD neither the internal hdd that I prepared before (linux installation don't care about changing the host pc).
Of course, I've deactivated the BIOS Secure Boot option.

So, my question is: is there a relationship between the original hdd and boot functionality ? How to solve that ?

Thanks you in advance !

Answer:Satellite C75-A-13Q - No boot with new HDD

As far as I know there is no any kind of ?relationship? between original HDD and boot functionality.
You can exchange HDD or upgrade it with SSD but so long BIOS recognized new device you should be able to install new OS.

I have upgraded y machine with SSD and installed original recovery image without any problem.

Which notebook model do you have?
Have you tried to install original recovery image using created recovery media?
