Preferred Solution: ODD on my Satellite C70D-A-11E wont read DVDs anymore

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ODD on my Satellite C70D-A-11E wont read DVDs anymore

If optical disc drive is installed properly maybe is reading lens dirty. Try to clean it up.

Other way, if your ODD can read CDs but not DVDs it can also be hardware malfunction. The reading lens cannot be calibrated properly and cannot find the right position to read DVD media.

In such case ODD must be exchanged.

Try to clean lens up and check if the problem persists. If yes contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

OK every since i sent my HP elitebook 8730W to get repair by hp my dvd drive wont read dvds anymore but it will still read cds i'm running windows vista business 64 bit. I'm thinking it is the drivers but i'm have trouble find them on google all i keep getting is software that will update all my drivers up you have to buy it.

Answer:DVD drive wont read DVDs anymore

What you could try is to run this information HERE and the FixIT and maybe also the manual instructions.

DVD/CD drives these days dont really need drivers, off one does but in the main they do not the main issue in read/write issues is the upper lower filters as in the above link should fix or the drive is dead.

After a regular shutdown I cannot boot the system anymore.
System starts but does not boot.

Referring to the manual (section 6, solutions of problems) I tried to hit [F12] after power on but nothing happened.
Same when hitting [F2].

My impression is that something failed on hard disk drive.

P.S. system has Win10 installed.

Evening, I have recently been testing out various OS's on my laptop and finally decided to revert back to Windows Pro.
It was working fine until a couple of days ago, but then the disk drive started to make a clicking noise as if the R/RW head was sticking.

Now it wont read CDs or DVDs, can someone please help and tell me if this is a software fault or a hardware fault and how best to fix it?

Answer:Satellite L30: drive wont read CDs or DVDs

It's a hardware problem, not because you changed the OS. A service could fix this problem (I think they must change the drive). I heard from another user, that he had problem with the optical drive. He had Panasonic (Matsu****a). If you have that type (not LG), maybe you have the same problem.

hi there,

my computer is really stuffed up, it goes to the blue screen a lot of times and now it can't read cds or dvds that i put into the computer. when i go to y computer it says that the drives are empty and please put a disc in. i was hoping that someone could help me, my previous topic was called 'computer restarts frequently' if you wanted to look at it. i was also wondering if i'd be better off by just formatting my computer and start from scratch. but i want to point out that i only just formatted my computer 2 months ago. and prior to me formatting the computer, the blue screen of death also appeared. please can someone help me.

thanks a tonne

Answer:Computer Doesn't Read Cds Or Dvds Anymore

Well if it is reseting with BSOD all of the time and also now not being able to read CD's then I would say that is it likely a hardware issue. Or a driver issue. Since you have only just re-formatted and it is still happening then the later is less likely. do you have any information from the BSOD screen.

I have a Satellite A80-131 and after bios update (last version 2.5) by windows procedure update, my DVD drive do not read DVD medias anymore. It is possible to read CD medias, but not DVD one.

Can I reinstall the old bios? Can I reinstall the firmware?

Ronai Lisboa

Answer:After BIOS update DVD driver do not read DVDs anymore - Sat A80

On the Toshiba driver page you will find also 2 Firmware updates.
Check which drive you unit has and try to update the firmware.
Try also to install the DVD ram driver.

PS: It's not possible to roll back the BIOS or to install the early version of BIOS on the unit. Only the Toshiba service partner can DOWNGRADE the BIOS

I had a probelm which required me to delete some keys in the registry and by mistake i delete a wrong one. As a result when i now play DVD it comes up with error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.

I know u need to be carefull so i made a system restore but it wont work. Does anyone know what i can do? DVDs now only work on VLC player. I have done a repair with the special CD but still no luck? i have tired to reinstall WMP (11) but same result. i do have codecs.

thanks in advance

I can help you get it to work again... But I need to know "what" codecs you already have installed.

Could well be connected. Before going through any software routes (such as background tasks and any software that you have installed since it had been working well), try cleaning the lens heads.

My A60 notebook won't burn cd's and dvd's anymore.
It just don't seem to read the empty discs.
Some regular it reads but won't start and some it won't
even start.

Answer:Satellite A60 won't burn CDs and DVDs anymore

Sounds like a corrupted drive device.
Usual such issues happen if the drive lens cannot calibrate properly.
In my opinion there is no much to do. I think only the drive replacement will solve such problem.

My CD Drive has started giving me problems.
It doesn't read all the CD I put in (Particularly Audio CDs).

It Plays DVDs fine.
I'm also unable to burn CDs as the system doesn't detect a CD.

Any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite A100-033 - ODD doesn't read all CDs but read DVDs

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

When it worked, dvds would automatically play on Toshiba HD DVD player. Now the disc whirls around a few times and then. Nothing, except for the odd one working.

If I click on DVD player on my desktop, a box comes up saying 'The specified drive cannot be located. Check the setting by going to Settings - Action Settings - Source, or otherwise check that the drive has been properly connected to the PC.

I haven't checked the Settings as I have no idea where to look for them but I presume the drive has been properly connected to the PC as it used to work perfectly.

Any help, or even a direction pointed in will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite P200-1EE won't play dvds anymore

Do you mean you cannot ready any DVDs using the Toshiba DVD player?
Did you try to use other software like VLC player for example?

I know that there is an update for Toshiba DVD player but I?m not sure if this issue is related to the Toshiba DVD player or to ODD (optical disk drive).
Therefore you should test if you can use other software.

Are you able to burn something on the DVD disk?
If not then a hardware problem could be possible?

Thanks for your quick reply...

Answer:Satellite A100-00N doesn't burn DVDs anymore

Sometimes the burning and reading does not work due to the wrong settings in the registry. Maybe you are a lucky guy and you have to change this;

Try this:

Remove the CD/DVD driver from the device manager and reboot the notebook. Then the OS should recognize and install the drive again.

The do this:
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Hope it helps

I've been using a prepackaged Sonic Record Now v.7.31 on my Satellite M45-S169 for three years now.
I've been able to copy dvds using this software.
Until recently it wont burn anymore.

What's more frustrating is the memory space on a blank dvd becomes all used up once I attempt to burn dvd files onto the cd.

Answer:Satellite M45-S169 - Sonic v.7.31 cannot burn DVDs anymore

Did you try to remove the upper and lower filters in the registry of the Windows OS?
No? Try this:
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Furthermore I recommend trying other and different disk (DVD and CD) from different manufacturers.
But of course it could be also a hardware issue. I mean the drives laser lens has stopped working properly due to the mechanical stress.

Make sure data cable is fully inserted at drive and motherboard. If that is OK and it does CDs but not DVDs then most likely is DVD laser or alignment US so send it back.

Hello all!

I have a HP dvd1170 w/lightscribe internal drive and here's my problem. the drive will read both cd's and dvd's written on other computers and will read and allow me to burn cd's but if i put a blank dvd in the drive the drive spins and spins and spins but that's it. it wont recognize the blank dvd. it wont allow me to write to the dvd and it seems that the entire drive locks up. it wont eject unless i reboot. at first I thought it may have been the brand i was using but i have since tried 5 or 6 different brands and they all do the same thing. any suggestions?

Answer:hp dvd1170 wont read blank dvds

It sounds like the DVD burning laser is gone. On drives that can burn both CDs and DVDs, one laser can stop working and the other will continue working fine.

If you have a friend with an external DVD burner, you can attach that and see if you can burn a DVD. If you can, then it is your burner; if you can't then it is a software/windows problem.

The DVR+/-RW on my father's "e-Machnes 5255" would read both CDs and DVDs fine until sometime in June. After that, for some reason, it would no longer read CDs. I've tested this myself: Any DVD I've loaded works fine both playing it as well as exploring it. However, when loading a CD nothing appears to happen. When you finally click on the E-drive it opens but is blank. I have tried 5-10 different CDs, cleaned the CDs, bought & used a CD-drive disk - all to no avail. This behaviour is the case for bought CDs that my father was previously using without a problem.
Seems to not be a hardware problem but more a software setting (OS, drivers, applications...) Can anyone give me a clue as to what to check as I have run out of ideas!

Answer:Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A - Wont read DVDs

It is likely that your DVD drive is worn out , or out of alignment. Better to just replace the drive for $24 that try to fix it. The CD read/write and DVD read/write are separate functions for different setups of the drive. It is not unusual for one function to work while the other has gone bad.

Answer:dvd rom playing up and wont read dvds or games?

It is possible you are looking for a software answer to a hardware problem.Do you have any bootable DVDs ?If so attempt to boot up to it. That will tell you definitively whether you have a hardware or software problem. If it will not read a bootable DVD before windows loads then the hardware is faulty and should be replaced.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well?

I have just been given a laptop for my son and I needed to wipe it. So I uploaded my Vista on to it which seemed to go ok. Now I switch the wireless internet switch and on the Connection icon on the bottom right I open it and it will not let me search any wireless connections as it says I have not got a wireless network adapter installed?

So I went onto the Toshiba website and downloaded the correct drivers. Well I think there the correct drivers. As I cannot get on to the internet I have done this via another laptop in the house which is using wireless internet. I then put the driver onto a DVD disc and tried to put it in the Toshiba laptop and it will not read the disc at all?
So I tried putting a normal DVD in there one of the kids and still will not read it. It sounds like it wants to read it then it just stops?

The model of the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro L40

If anyone could help me I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Satellite Pro L40 won’t read DVDs

WLAN card must be installed properly. The status can be checked in device manager.
To enable WLAN card properly you must enable WLAN switch and use FN+F8 key combination (VAP must be installed). Using this key combination you can enable/disable WLAN card.

What to say about DVDs? On this way it is not easy to say much about it. I presume you have installed Vista using installations disc and obviously SP L40 could read this disc properly.
Try to install WLAN driver using USB stick and when Vista is installed properly test optical disc drive using different CD/DVD medias.

I have a windows XP computer and for a year have had no major problems with it. however the warantee has now ran out and for a long time the slot where the disks go in (im a computer illiterate) doesnt seem to be working. the disk goes in fine and then all the normal bleepy noises it makes when reading a cd-rom, cd or dvd can be heard, however nothing then comes up on the screen, and if i go into 'my computer' or anything like that the computer doesnt seem to know that theres a disk that should have been read! it doesnt matter what i try to put in, before it would read and burn onto cd and dvds, and i could install programs from cd-roms, but now it doesnt recognise anything! it'll cost a fortune if i have to send it away to get fixed, and like i said i know NOTHING about computers... someone please help me!!!

Answer:why wont my computer read disks anymore?

I highly doubt its a driver problem, but you can check...

Right click My Computer->manage->Device Manager->CD/DVD Drives->Right click on the drive and select update drivers. Restart.

Or click on properties (the same menu as update drivers) adn see what version it is. Compare this to the ones on the Samsung website for the most curreny.

Another idea is to flash the firmware, See if you can grab them from Samsung's site.

If that doesnt help than I would just buy a new optical drive and throw it in there.

Hello, I have an Asus N53S laptop, and im having issues with my DVDROM, its a Slimtype BD E DS4E1S. Just recently when trying to back up some data i got a message while using DVD Author Plus, that the "Seleced CD/DVD drive has been disconnected." I tried using other various programs such as Express Burn, and the built iin burning tools through Windows and would get other error messages. I found a Firmware update through Asus' website and that fixed the problem for one more burn, but now its back to the same old errors. I have no problem reading discs of every kind, but writing just isent working. Through the device manager every says its working fine. Im running Windows 7, 64 bit, service pack 1.

Answer:DVD drive will read, but wont write anymore.

Just to put you right, it's not a DVD-ROM drive, it's a DVD-R R/W drive with Blu-Ray reading capability.
A DVD-ROM drive, by definition, cannot write to anything, it just reads CD-ROM & DVD-ROM discs (ROM = Read Only Memory).

Device Manager is a very useful tool but it's not very clever at knowing when a device is physically broken, as I suspect your drive is. Provided the drive is connected up properly, will turn on, & has it's driver installed, Device Manager will be blissfully ignorant and tell you "This device is working properly" even when the device has an internal fault.

I tried to store alot of files I use on my pc many months ago (mainly very large bitmap images for photoshop and image utilities) by burning them onto a dvd as one or two large 7z files (high compression). I verified the dvd disc in Nero after burning, and it was stated that it was a good burn, and sure enough it copied back onto the hard drive and unzipped just fine. Only recently I've found out that the disc will no longer read, I click on my computer after inserting the dvd and a few secs later it reads as a raw file blank CD instead, with 0 bytes as free and 0 bytes total size, and just like a blank cd no files are listed. The only thing I can think of is that I have recently installed Nero 7 (I used am earlier version, 6, for burning), but I doubt that this could be the problem. I dont want to uninstall nero just in case anyone might know another way around the it-thanks for any help, anyone???? :)

I own a Satellite M40-145 purchased just over one year ago; the DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... peculiar. It still reads commercial DVDs and burned DVD+R, but apparently it doesn't read burned DVD-Rs anymore. I have tried with different DVD-Rs I burned through the same DVD player, with no success; trying to access the DVD yields a "insert disk in D: drive" message.

In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVDs. Please tell me there's a way to solve this without sending the computer to customer service...
I'd hate to think it broke down just days after the expiration date of the warranty.

Well, you can try to remove the drive form the device manger.
After new reboot the drive should be recognized again. Check then if it?s possible to read the DVD-R CD.

But the issue sounds as a lens calibration error. If you use different media the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in such cases only the drive replacement will solve this issue.

I own a Toshiba Satellite L755-16C Laptop. The DVDs I have run on it before (installing games, softwares, movies, etc) are no longer detected by the DVD Drive. CDs do work for some reason.

Whenever I insert a DVD Disk in the drive, the light blinks and I feel some movement and hear some noises that typically happens when a Disc is entered and being read. However the contents of the DVD Drive do not show. If I click open the DVD Drive from My Computer, the DVD ejects and the computer asks me to enter a Disc, as if there was no Disc inserted.

I downloaded the latest BIOS files from their website but nothing changed.

Answer:Satellite L755-16C - ODD can Read CDs but not DVDs any more

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there. At first try to clean the lens up. Maybe is lens dirty.
Other way it can be mechanical problem. Fact is that lens position is different for reading CDs and DVDs. Maybe is there some problem with lens calibration.

Try to clean it up at first and post some feedback.

I have a Satellite A60 with UJDA760 CDRW/DVD drive.
The drive won't read DVDs (DVD+R not at all, DVD-R sometimes (if the drive is cold(?!?))).

Can this be a firmware problem? And if so, does anyone know, where I can find a firmware update for this drive? (I tried the pack from the Toshiba web site, but an update for the drive is not available)

The drive reads CDs without problems.

Thanks for any comments!

Answer:Satellite A60: Can't read self-created DVDs

Here is the Firmware update for your A60. I hope this helps to resolve any issues you have. A tip is to make sure that you do not create multisession DVD's. This can render them non-readable. It is a good idea to close all DVD's after you burn them so this does not occur. I hope this fixes any problems you happen to have. =2&selFamily=2&selSeries=153&selProduct=536&langua ge=13&selOS=10&selType=all&yearupload=&monthupload =&dayupload=&useDate=null&mode=allMachines&search= &action=search&macId=&country=all&selectedLanguage =13&type=all&page=1&ID=46804&OSID=-1&driverLanguage=42

Purchased Satellite P300-16T about a month ago, using Vista Home Premium. Up until today my cd/dvd rom drive was working fine.

Now when I try and insert any dvd it is not being recognised at all i.e. as though there is no disk in the drive. Audio cds are playing fine but any type of dvd whether it be original or dvd-r/rw is not recognised.

When clicking on the drive itself in 'computer' the drive then ejects and I get a message to insert a disk in the drive. I am not over knowledgeable about these things but I have checked the drivers are up to date.

I have unistalled and reinstalled the driver and also set a system restore point up to a week ago but still no luck. I would rather not take it back to the store as I have photos and videos now on the laptop and it would be a pain to remove them so if anyone can provide a solution would be grateful. I have also deleted upper registry values in redegit and deleted any added burning software like nero. Is now driving me mad

Thank you

> I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver and also set a system restore point up to a week ago but still no luck.
Ok... you have tried to set the OS to the early time point but did you also try to boot from a Toshiba Recovery DVD.
If this issue is related to the CD/DVD drive hardware problem then it shouldn?t be possible to boot from the Toshiba recovery DVD.
In such case the CD/DVD drive should be replaced by ASP

But if it?s possible to boot from the Toshiba Recovery DVD then your ODD is not damage and this could be only a software issue.
In this case an new OS installation and the usage of recovery DVD should help you to solve this CD/DVD drive problem.

In my opinion it?s worth a try?

I have a notebook Satellite M30X-144 and I am having a problem with my DVD player(Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-8315).

I can read CDs but when I put any kind of DVDs in it, it does not read anything.

What can I do to solve it?

Answer:DVD-RAM of Satellite M30X-144 cannot read DVDs

Hi Joao,

you have a problem with your DVD drive? I suggest you the following:

Remove the drive in the "device manager" of windows, let windows reinstall it, test if it works. If the same problem persists contact a local ASP (authorized service partner)
because then your drive is probably faulty and your machine needs to be checked by an technician.
Here a site where you can find the nearest ASP:

I hope I helped you a little bit with the problem of your Satellite M30X. ;)

I have a new satellite A100-049 that came with vista home premium pre-installed. After returning to the computer from sleep/standby (Whatever the mode is when the light pulses yellow) no discs can be read in the drive. The disc will spin continually but nothing will happen.

Everything works fine when the computer is turned on first time, but after sleep it stops reading discs. Is there anything I can do about this?

Answer:Satellite A100-049: CDs and DVDs don't read after standby

What happens if you will remove the CD or DVD media from the drive after the notebook returned from sleep/standby???

I mean you should try to remove the medium, close the drive drawer, then open the drive, insert the CD/DVD and check if the notebook recognizes the medium.

About a fortnight ago my DVD drive stopped playing/burning DVD's and now only plays/burns CD's. I followed the guides for removing the Upper and Lower filters and reformatted my laptop to the factory state and the DVD drive didnt work.

I bought a new replacement drive and this doesnt play DVD's either so im presuming my original DVD drive worked but there is something wrong with the laptop hardware itself?

I bought the laptop in Nov '09 so is it still in warranty or is there anything else i can try?

Answer:Satellite L500D - Can't read/write DVDs

Hi mitchello,

> and reformatted my laptop to the factory state and the DVD drive didnt work.
If you have tested it with factory settings and it still doesn?t work it?s hardware malfunction but it?s strange why it doesn?t work with a new drive?

What program do you use for read or write DVDs? I can recommend VLC media player for playing all multimedia content and CD Burner XP as burning program. Both programs are freeware and working perfectly. Never had a problem with these tools.

Did you buy a new drive from an authorized service provider? I ask this because not all drives are compatible with all notebooks due different pin assignment. If the new drive is not working you can return it to get a replacement.

Answer:Satellite Pro M30: Can't read DVDs on DVDrw drive

The ?I/O device error? occurs if drive has a problem with the disc or your system config (mainly a disc problem).
The DVD drive can?t read all DVDs or just the burned DVDs?
Which burning software did you use?
As far as I know you should always closed the burning session.

Furthermore if you need the DVD Shrink software please check this links:

I am a user of a Toshiba Satellite M40-110. The CD Recorder refuses to read some DVDs, and gives me the following error whenever I try to access the drive from the windows explorer:

D:\ is not accessible.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I don't know if this is related to my problem, but yesterday it gave me "Power Callibration Errors" when trying to burn some CDs with Nero. However, after inserting another firm's CD, it worked with no errors at all.

Please reply at your earliest convinience.

Answer:Satellite M40 – the drive doesn’t read some DVDs

Does this error occur if you use Nero burning software? Is there ?power calibration area full'' error message?

I would recommend possibly trying a higher quality brand of media with the drive such as TDK, Verbatim, or Imation to determine if those work properly for you.

Answer:Satellite L750-11W - DVD rom doesn't read all DVDs

I found your other threads you posted some time ago about CD/DVD drive malfunction.

My idea was to clean the laser lens but this was already suggested in the other threads as well.

From my opinion there is no much to do? sometimes firmware could be updated to improve the compatibility between the different disks but this is only possible in case such firmware would be available.
I checked the Toshiba EU driver page and firmware update is not available for L750 series.
Therefore I guess your issue is related to ODD malfunction.

I have a SatA40 (almost 3 years ago now) and the cd/dvd unit doesn't work right, the cd will not read or write, but the dvd reads all my dvds.

Does anyone have an idea why one doesn't and the other does work?? (Everyone I mention it to thinks it strange - thinking if one doesn't work the other shouldn't either.)

Answer:Satellite A40: Drive doesn't read CDs but DVDs

You description sounds like the drive lens cannot calibrate in the right position.
Usually before the drive will read or write the medium the lens must be calibrate.
In you case the lens cannot calibrate and therefore the drive does not recognize the CD.

Generally in such cases the drive must be replaced.
But maybe you?re a lucky man. Try to clean the lens gently. But be careful?

I've got a really serious problem with my DVD reader.
It stopped to be working. I mean, it does read CD's but not DVD discs.
I dont know what is the issue.

I went through the internet and didnt find any solution.

Please help me.
It is not a software problem, because my notebook does not boot from DVD's, but from CD's does...

Answer:DVD-RW DVR-K17LF for Satellite A series doesn't read DVDs but only CDs

The issue could be related to the malfunction of drive?s laser lens.
Possibly the lens cannot handle the DVDs due to a hardware stress.
In most cases the lens cannot calibrate properly and therefore different medias would not work.
In such case there is no much to do? In most cases the drive must be replaced.

But maybe you could try to clean the drive?s laser lens using a professional cleaning set which could be purchased from different computer dealers.
I?m not quite sure if this will help you but it?s a worth a try?

PS: try also this:
Remove the drive from the device manager, access the registry and remove the upper and lower filters from this key;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then reboot the notebook and check the drive?s functionality.

I have been having this problem, whenever I insert a DVD, or even a CD that has data stored, my laptop will not be able to access those files.
When I go to My Computer, there will be icon to recognise the DVD or CD, I will occasionally get a message saying that the extensions of the file is not recongise and that I will have to change it.

Funnier still, when I try to insert a DVD-ROM, it recognises the DVD as a BLANK disc; an icon would appear in My Computer that would suggest that the DVD CD is in fact a blank disc. I simply cannot run any DVDs or data CDs whatsoever.

I have the latest drivers, I run Vista 32bit and am clueless as to the cause for my problems.

I hope I can have this problem resolved by your help.

Answer:Satellite A120: CD/DVD drive cannot read or recognise DVDs

I?m not quite sure what could be the reason for such strange ODD issue but let?s hope that this could be solved changing some registry entries.

First of all please access the device manager and remove the CD/DVD drive from the device list.

Then start the registry editor and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then reboot the notebook and check if the CD/DVD drive would work after new driver reorganization and installation.

I have a problem with my DVD drive, it works just fine for most of the time, but sometimes it decides to just not read DVDs. In this particular case I put a (brand new) DVD from a game in the drive, it mucks around for a while, then nothing happens, no autoplay or anything.

If I try to click on the drive manually it pretends there is absolutely nothing inside... The drive is (as far as I can tell) a GMA-4082N, appears to be made by LG. I figured I?d go ahead and try to update the driver, but neither Toshiba nor LG seem to provide anything of the sort...

This is really annoying, I?m hoping someone can tell me what the problem is...

I've got a Satellite A20-130 laptop, running WinXP and Ununtu Dapper in a dual partition. My 2nd laptop is not Toshiba one. When I burned DVDs (DVD+R) with my non-Toshiba laptop and played them in my Satellite it all worked fine.

However, when I bought a new optical drive for my 2nd laptop my Toshiba suddenly stopped playing the DVDs burnt in this new optical drive(I was using exactly the same disc brand and format as before-- DVD+R). I tried the old DVDs (the ones burnt in the laptop before the optical drive hardware was upgraded) and they can still by read perfectly fine.

This problem applies to both Ubuntu and WinXP. Support from 2nd laptop says this sounds like a firmware problem with my Toshiba. I updated the driver for my SD R2412 Toshiba optical drive (which, according to the file manual, seems to fix a DVD-Ram compatibility issue). Now the drive occasionally reads some of the new burned DVDs (after making loads of noise and waiting for ages), but more often than not I get an error message saying the device cannot be read because the format is incorrect or the device needs to be formatted.

This non-Toshiba laptop reads the DVDs it burns using the upgraded optical drive perfectly fine.

Answer:Satellite A20-130: SD R2412 cannot read DVDs burnt in certain optical drives

Satellite A20 is pretty old notebook model and after intensive usage it can be that drive is more ?sensitive?. If all this happen ?occasionally? there is no simply explanation why this happen.

I know it is pretty annoying but I do not see any ?magic? solution. At the end you must test it with brand new drive.

Any idea?

Thank's Kalle

Answer:Vista preinstalled Satellite P100-10U cannot read DVDs - event code 11

I?m really surprised because such error issue should be solved after the new OS installation.
Furthermore as you already suggested the Upper and Lower filter in the registry key are mostly responsible for such strange drive issues.

Anyway, I would recommend removing the drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook. After the new reboot the OS should recognize the CD/DVD drive again. You should see a message like ?new device was installed? or something like that?

Additionally it would be advisable to use a system repair program like ?CCleaner?. It?s freeware!!

Finally you should check the registry again if the Upper and Lower filter exists and delete it.
Don?t forget to reboot the unit!

Good luck

I've had an A100-538 for a week now. Yesterday evening I was working on it (AC-power)and then I left the house for about half an hour, leaving the laptop on. When I came back the computer was off and I heard a soft ticking noise. (I'm sure it hasn't got anything to do with the Toshiba Power Saver) I couldn't restart it at that moment.

After about half an hour I was able to turn it back on again and it seems to be allright again. But..... it won't run on the battery anymore. According to the system tray icon the battery is full 100%, yet when I disconnect the power adapter the computers goes dead instantly. What made the computer go off in the first place and why won't it run on the battery anymore?

Answer:Satellite A100-538 wont run on battery anymore

Sounds like it went dead because the harddrive made a false contact causing the computer to shut off. As well as making the ticking noise. It wont run on battery because the battery is still somewhat shorted out and will not allow the battery to function like normal. There is a new battery cover that will resolve this problem. I advise you take it in to your ASP and have them change the battery cover and do a few quick tests to make sure nothing else was damaged.

Hello everyone,

But the orange LED is lightened up, when I have it plugged in and the battery in its slot, suggesting that it should be charging?!?

Also, I have two batteries, but it wont charge neither of them.
Does anybody have any suggestions/help?

Thanks people,

Answer:Satellite A-series wont charge the battery anymore

Hi mate,

it seems that the charging electronic kissed goodbye. (which means -> malfunction :) ). So, in this case you must send your machine to an ASP (authorized service partner) for a hardwarecheckup and repair of that component.

I mean, if both of your batteries won?t charge then it MUST be the charging electronic, another logical conclusion is not present at the moment..

If you need some help to find an ASP just click [HERE| 000000871] and contact the nearest one in your country.

Answer:Satellite A30 wont read dvd's but will read cd/cd rom's

Try to remove the drive from the device manager.
After notebook rebooting the OS should recognizes the drive again.
Maybe it helps.

When I try and play HD-DVDs through my laptop I get the same message pop up unable to output to an external device!!
I?m not trying to play it through the TV. I want to play it through my laptop.

Can anyone help???

Sorry if I?m being thick cheers guys. It?s a Satellite P200-1EE.

Answer:HD-DVDs wont play on Satellite P200-1EE - unable to output external device

Have you installed TEMPO?
This is the Toshiba update program for their computers and is currently showing 9 updates for the P200-1EE, 2 of which are updates for the HD-DVD Drive.
The download speed is slow but it does solve this error.

My wive purchase this computer coupple of months ago. It was from the beginning ferry slow on windows 8
The wurst laptop we ever had. We feel robbed of our money.

2 months ago we started with Ubuntu. It Still slow. IS there anybody with the same problems?

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-108 is very slow

Hi Marco

I don't have this notebook model and cannot confirm what you wrote but fact is that almost all new notebooks are pretty slow at the beginning. Many applications are set to start with Windows and this, of course, slows down boot time.
Windows updates are also set to automatic so in the background the machine will download and install many updates so this will slow down your machine rapidly.

In my opinion you should install original OS that you got with this machine and optimize it a bit.
Remove all useless stuff, change start-up option and disable automatic Windows updates.
In the past I have noticed that original preinstalled antivirus is also responsible for notebook?s performance so I don't use original preinstalled application but my own version of Avir Antivir and it runs perfectly.

Check all these options and I hope your machine will run much better than before.

I'm looking for a new display for my Toshiba Satellite C70D-A-11K!

Please help!

Answer:Need new display for my Satellite C70D-A

The Satellite C70D-A-11K was equipped with the 17.3" LED color LCD panel with the supporting max resolution of 1600 x 900 px
You should be able to order such display panel from local Toshiba authorized service provider or you could check some 3rd part online dealers who provide compatible notebook parts…

As I mention above: you should look for the 17.3" panels.

I want to upgrade RAM with additional 4 GB but at the bottom of the notebook there is no RAM cover so I don't have access to the RAM slots.
I don't want to cancel valid warranty so I don't want to open it alone.
What should I do ???

Just bought a Satellite C70D with Win 8.1. Everything works (as far as I know until know), except boot from DVD. I disabled in the bios the Secure Boot and changed the boot order to DVD first, then USB and then HDD. The DVD drive starts, but then it skips to the HDD and Windows is started. First time I tried there was a message like "DVD boot not supported" or something like that.
The DVD is bootable, so that is not the problem.
I would like to install Linux Mint alongside Windows.
Anyone solved this problem already?

Answer:Satellite C70D - How to boot from DVD

Update: changing from UEFI to CMS in the BIOS Advanced tab makes it possible to boot from DVD, but Windows won't boot anymore.... Is there any possibility to boot from DVDE and still be able to start Windows as well?

i see that the site don't provide all download drivers. In the device management I have still 2 drivers missing
pci encryptions/decryption controller and unknown device.

Can someone help me out with it?

Answer:Need some drivers for my Satellite C70D-B-10U

According notebook specification your machine was delivered with preinstalled Win8.1 64BIT ML.
Original preinstalled version is perfectly configured with all necessary drivers.

The question is: what are you doing with your machine?
Do you try to use some older Windows version?

Hello everybody,
the Toshiba Sat C70D-B-317 (PSCLEE01L009FR) is on it's way and I don't have it for the moment but I would like to know if there is a way to add some Ram to this machine without opening everything?
Also, is it possible to change the HD in the future in the same conditions?

sorry, but it's my first PC laptop and as a Mac user I'm completely lost with all these models and different serial numbers.

I thank you in advance for your answer.

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-317 - Ram upgrade

1. yes you can upgrade your RAM, This laptop has 2 slots with one 4GB standard so if you would you can put one more 4GB. With 2x4 you have Dual-channel and that works much faster than single

I don't know if your HDD can e upgraded. When it's not possible you can always buy a external HDD

I hope i helped you

I have a C70D-A-107 and want to speed up this notebook. Already placed 4gb extra memory so the notebook has now 8gb internal. I doubt whether it is usefull to put in 2x8gb. I think the processor is just to slow. It has a AMD E1-2100 inside. Is it possible to put in another (faster) processor?

Answer:Speed-up Satellite C70D-A-107

The Satellite C70D-A-107 was equipped with an AMD Essentials E1-2100 Accelerated CPU (1,00 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache)
It’s not the fastest CPU therefore the notebook performance isn’t the best…

But CPU upgrade isn’t officially supported by notebook manufacturer... therefore I don’t think that you will be able to upgrade the CPU…

I read about successful Intel CPU upgrades but did not meet anyone who was able to perform an upgrade with an AMD CPU

Good evening,

I'm sorry to disturb,
but I find myself in a situation to which I find no solution,
that's why I come here asking for some help.

A friend has just purchased the following laptop:
- Satellite C70D-B-307

but the worry is that apparently it is impossible to have access to the HDD recovery to execute the factory restoration.
I try all possible solutions that I find on the web and none of it works.

what to do ?

does Toshiba sell the recovery DVDs that will restore the computer to its factory state?

Thank you very much .

Hi There,

I have had a Satellite C70D for about 18 months now, but have not used it in the past year as I have been disputing with customer services about the windows licence for the machine as I lost it when I formatted the original hard drive before installing an SSD and they wouldnt send me a copy of it. I have now bitten the bullet and bought a windows 10 licence again. However since building the machine a few days ago, I have been having a couple of issues and as it is now out of warranty, I cannot contact customer support (Who I found unhelpful even when it was in warranty!)

The first issue is when I boot up the machine, occasionally the keyboard will not work, I cannot type the BitLocker pin and I have to remove the battery and press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, this then fixes the issue for a few reboots before it goes again.

The second is that occasionally it will boot up with a red x next to the WiFi symbol, but it detects the WiFi card, usually a reboot fixes this but not always. I have reseated the card and still no avail.

Can anyone shed any light on what may be causing this? The BIOS is up-to-date as are all of the drivers.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi All,

I have an Satellite C70D-A-11D ... when I use once the FN Key to do a Print Screen or use the Screen-Zoom on the Space Key...

I am not able to use the Keynumbers 1 to 4 neither the space Key to enter a space between two always change between the bigger screen solution or the normal solution...

I only can change the FN Key again after change the settings in Display settings and after a reboot...
So I cant use FN without a reset with the F1 to F12 Key use and a reboot...

Normaly the FN Key works only if it is pressed...if not the normal Function of the Keys 1 to 4 or F1 to F12 will work if configured in the settings, or not?

What to do?

Kind regards

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-11D Function Key deactivate after use

First of all you can change between the special function key mode (without pressing FN key) or normal (standard) mode (Hold Fn first to use standard F1-F12 functions.)

This function can be changed in BIOS.
In BIOS go to Advanced -> System configuration

Check this option.

Hi all,

My grandmother recently bought this Toshiba, mostly i recommend people a Toshiba but this is going to far.

I wasn't aware that she bought a laptop untill she called me and said she needs help because she never worked with such a slow computer as this Toshiba.

So my question is

How much logic does Toshiba has? I mean putting 6GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM ( ok nice for a casual laptop ) doesn't quite fit with a >>1GHz<< processor. for the rest the specs aren't terrible.

Can somebody explain me why this laptop has a 1GHz processor with 6GB of RAM. this doensn't makes sence at all

I've a angry grandmother xD with a crappy laptop so I builded quick a pc for her where so does her work on for now

Answer:Satellite C70D-B-108 - Slowest laptop I've ever saw

AMD E1-2100, 6 GB, 17.3 inch, 1600x900, AMD Radeon HD 8210, 750 GB,
that realy makes no sense they even put in a decent gpu and bottleneck it whit a 1ghz low budget AMD E1-2100.
ow well logic sometimes .
i hope it works out for ur grandmother

I picked up a brand new c70d-b-10u today from a well known retailer.
I turned it on, set the language, gave a computer name, hooked up to a wi fi and then it asked for Other User Password!

I never entered a password to start with so why is it asking for one?

I cannot get to the shop again until next week and urgently need to get up and running.

Any ideas greatly received.

Answer:Brand new Satellite C70D-B-10U wants a password?

Try to recover the notebook once again using the HDD recovery option.

The recovery procedure would reset the notebook back to factory settings… usually after that no passwords should be set…

I have a Satellite C70D-A-114...

i hardly used it because it was slow

so i wanted to sell it

first i wanted to set it back to factory settings

doing that, in that process i seem to have deleted all files

so now i get message no bootable disc etc.

Tried everything, there is simply no recovery file

So where can i find such a file for free? It's just not normal that it is not on the site.

Answer:Need recovery files for my Satellite C70D-A-114

All you can find for free are all drivers, tools and utilities. Original recovery image (software package) is not for free and if you need it you must order recovery disc directly by Toshiba.

You can order it on

By the way: in user’s manuals document is clearly described how you can create recovery installation disc. I’m wondering you didn’t make it in the past.

It is not easy to understand your problem.
Do you use your notebook with original Windows that you got with your notebook or maybe own OS version?

My girlfriend bought me a new Toshiba laptop C70D-B-10U (my second Toshiba), it is a good laptop apart from the speakers they are terrible. I didn't want my first post to be a complaint but, Toshiba cut corners when it put the speakers in this series of laptops.

Or have I not set them right has anyone else had this problem, any ideas or solutions thank you.

Answer:Bad Speakers on Satellite C70D-B-10UM

I think your notebook has only small stereo speakers and the sound is not the best. I have Satellite S50-B with Harman/kardon speakers and sound is really good.

You can try to change sound options but if you want to have better sound I’m afraid you need external speakers, Maybe BT speakers.
