Super slow Satellite C660/C660D

Question: Super slow Satellite C660/C660D

My Mum bought a Tosh Sat C660/C660D about 5 months ago. From day one,it has been slower than a snail with a cold.

*Problem:*
When you click on the start button, it can take a good 10 - 20 seconds for the menu to pop up. When you select say MS Word, that can take 30 - 40 seconds to load up. Even opening IE can take a good 30 second, and then theres the time for the website to open on top of this.

System monitor shows (CPU between 3% & 7%), (Physical memory (84% Used) : This is when system is at rest, not doing anything, no programs running.

Laptop has Celeron 1.5ghz, 1gb RAM and Windows 7 (64bit). I know its not like the BEST laptop out there, but I think is stud react a little quicker than it is doing.

Dont have a lot installed, mainly MS office. No games or graphic programs.

***WHAT IVE DONE SO FAR***

* Done the Toshiba, build in system recovery. (Several times)
* Reg Clean, System Clean, Defrag
* Updated BIOS & Chip Set

Any Ideas????????

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

>System monitor shows (CPU between 3% & 7%), (Physical memory (84% Used)

In my opinion you should upgrade the RAM.
84% is already used by system therefore it takes much longer to start other application.
Your notebook use 1GB RAM running Win7 64bit?dude? I don?t not wonder that your notebook is running slow.

I recommend updating the RAM to 2GB or better 3GB or 4GB RAM

Hello

I'm having problem with my Toshiba Satellite C660-1LD PSC0QE

let me share the problem.

I use to use it without The battery so most of The time when sudden blackout happens my laptop also turns off. Then I'm having trouble booting it up it just stays on The black screen. I tried changing The memory to different slots an checking The HDD and troubleshooting it. The last thing I did was reformat The HDD and tried to reinstall windows. Here are my observations:

- If The configuration of my SATA on bios is on ACHI, windows is telling me that it can't detect any bootable partition so windows installation is not possible to any partition of my HDD, but If I switch The SATA configuration on bios to COMPATIBILITY, Then windows continues to be installed on any partition I want.

I thought everything are going smoothly but, when windows are finishing its installation suddenly an error pops up

Now I don't know what to do. It is so frustrating. Then I accidentally inserted the Recovery media and the laptop started booting up on the disc and install windows and restore it to the factory setting with its bundled software.

Now here is the problem. It is so slow. Even the startup andbootup of Windows isso slow it would take about 30 minutes just to boot up. the mouse cursor responds accordingly except when you open a program or clicking the right button it would take 10 minutes. Everything is so slow. Now I don't really know what to do.

Now I'm trying to re... Read more

Answer:Satellite C660-1LD is super slow

My advice for you is to use recovery image only. Set BIOS to default settings and install OS using recovery media. Recovery image contains all necessary drivers, tools and utilities so you will have perfect OS configuration.
What you need is small OS optimization.

Take some time and read http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
This is older thread but the principle is the same on new machines too. As small test remove preinstalled antivirus application and check if start-up is faster.

Hy,

On the manual stayes that I can upgrade my dedicated video ram till 4Gb but I do not find this option in Advanced Option, neither in Bios, I have a Satellite C660/C660D.

By the way, my CPU is supporting 16 Gb and my motherboard also, Why can't I set on it 16?, because in the manual it is said only 8!

I don't know which model do you have exactly but video Ram cannot be upgraded ?directly?. All you can do is to upgrade RAM. With more RAM more memory will be used for graphic operations.

There is no option to disable it on this laptop, I have searched for the answer online but nothing, there seems to be no way to do it on this model of laptop. I tried downloading the new touchpad driver from this site but had absolutely no effect and gave me no more options to disable it, it changed nothing. Completely stuck now and its driving me crazy!

The mouse also clicks on its own randomly even when Im not touching it, always seems to get bad when im gaming.

I still want to use the touchpad to move the pointer around, just don't want to use it to click.

Answer:How do i disable tap-to-click on Satellite C660/C660D?

On my Satellite S50-B is installed ELAN software and tapping option can also not be disabled.

Explanation: one finger tapping always performs Point/Click/Select function, which is equivalent to clicking the left mouse button.

It is really strange that this option doesn't exist.

Anyway, if you don't need touchpad in general you can enable/disable it using Fx button (don't know exactly which one on this notebook model).

Hello admin,

I would like to know if my Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D supports 3D video. I played one of the sample video on YouTube and use one of the simple 3D glasses (which I received free when went to cinema watch 3d movie) but that seem to be not working, or could it be my laptop which doesn?t support 3D.

Please explain in details. Many thanks

Dear reader,

I am struggling for days now with my Satellite C660/C660D 1FH (SN: 2C092277K).
I did a clean install of a legit Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and installed the drivers in the correct way as maild to me by the Toshiba customer support.

But when I install the ATI videocard drivers it says "installing" but after that nothing is installed.
My laptop is still using the standard VGA adapter and my maximum resolution is 1024x768.

I called tech support several times but all they tell me is "install in the right order".

I did a clean install 3 times (4 in total) and followed their guide, but nothing. Is there anyone who can help me out on this matter as I am getting a little bit frustrated *lol*

Yours sincerely,

Angelo

I have a satellite C660/C660D laptop and, having been nagged for months by windows pop-ups which said that my machine is suitable and eligible for an upgrade to windows 10, I finally gave in and clicked to receive the upgrade to windows 10.

(The machine came with windows 7 and had worked fine for me)

After the "upgrade" to windows 10 things like email and internet searches worked fine and so (apart from having to find my way around the screen anew) I was happy. Just recently though I tried to use interactive graphs on some of the websites I use and, instead of the graphs that I usually see, I got a rectangle with a chequered pattern and nothing else. The next problem was with my disc player, which was not even recognised.
A friend who is more IT savvy than me suggested that I should check that I still had Javascript (needed for the interactive stuff so he said). I found that Java was missing completely and so downloaded it again; after this the interactive graphs worked for a day. The next morning the interactive stuff had disappeared and Java was once again missing from the listed programmes.
My friend suggested that I have a disc in the player and then start the machine; this worked and I got my sound back - - - but no picture. My friend suggested I update Adobe Flash, which I tried resulting in a string of links each of which suggested that Adobe Flash has serious security issues.

The next problem is that Youtube and other video sources will n... Read more

Sorry for such a dum question but I have dial up internet (living in rural France).
Could someone tell me what I need to buy to be able to use my dial up connection (there doesn't seem to be a built in modem).

I would also like to be able to use the wifi internet at MacD's what do I have to do to be able to do this ?

Thanks for any help ;-)

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - Dial Up Modem and Wi-Fi Question

Hi LaVidalerie,

To setup an dial up internet connection you need an external modem like [THIS|http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-56k-V-92-External-Modem/dp/B00294EQ5U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302532267&sr=8-1] one. You can connect it to your computer via USB port and then you can plug in the phone cable.

Regarding the WLAN connection: I don?t know what you mean with ?MacD?s? but you should ask the local system administrator how to setup the WLAN connection and what settings are required.

Check this!!!

So this morning after trying to power up my Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D I was met with a black screen.

The power lights both work and light up, the fans whirl when I power up but nothing ever comes up on the screen, I was wondering if anyone could help here?

It's less than 3 months old.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D will not boot up (black screen)

To be honest I really don?t know how to help you.
Remove battery, leave notebook for a while and try to start notebook with AC power supply only. Try to do it several times with and without battery. If nothing helps there must be some hardware problem so I recommend you to contact Toshiba service and ask for help.

Warranty is valid so there is no reason to be worried about it.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - shift key causes the screen to go black

Hi

> I am disappointed to see the shift key (left) as well as the CTRL key causing the screen to go black intermittently when typing my blog...

What does this means exactly? Pressing SHIFT and CTRL button disable the display and you are not able to see anything on the monitor?
Is this right?

Did you check if this happens using an external USB keyboard too?
If not, I would assume that your keyboard malfunctions and needs to be replaced.

A friend of mine has had a issue with my keyboard. The cursor jumped around and some characters were displayed twice? this could be solved by BIOS update?I?m not sure if your notebook uses the latest BIOS but you could check this too.

Hello Toshiba community

I'm a new Toshiba user, I have a new laptop of Toshiba as model of it's Satellite C660 / C660D, I'm using my new laptop for 6 months and I'm kind of having a lot of time on my laptop. Sometimes I keep it open for more than 10 hours.

My problem is like 3-4 months ago at the right-bottom of the screen a warning came out like "There is something wrong with your hard-disc, you should give it to any Toshiba service for the guarantee".
But that's happened because I played on the users, I mean the users option for windows, not something about hardware, just changing the current user's name caused this and it now has weird name when I reversed the name change; it turned to something like TOSH~1 etc.

After several time, I mean like 1 month ago my computer got very slow. I was playing video games with their high resolution but now the laptop lags even I put them at low resolution.. I didn't change any hardware or touched it. But it's frustrating to see that I can't do the things that I used to do anymore.

Another thing is, I'm scared from laptop's heat. Is it normal to have 49-50 degrees? Because when I play games it's around that degree. I live in a hot city.

Some people offered me to use HD Tune to check if I have a bad sector on hdd, I did it. Didn't work either.
I deleted some of my files to get free space on my HDD also, likely 150 gigs at total. I even wiped the empty area in my HDD via CCleaner. I often do the registery-fix w... Read more

Answer:Re: Overheating and lagging issues on Satellite C660/C660D

It is not easy to say what is wrong there. Generally speaking you should think about upgrading RAM to maximum level. With more RAM notebook should have more ?power? and different operations should be done much faster.

To make my notebook better and faster I?ve upgraded RAM to maximum level and also changed HDD to SSD. There is so big difference and now notebook runs as rocket. Think about RAM upgrade.
>Another thing is, I'm scared from laptop's heat. Is it normal to have 49-50 degrees?
From my point of view this temperature is normal and definitely not too high. When you use your notebook place it on the desk and be sure cooling fan and cooling grill are free and not blocked.

Don?t open your notebook. You cannot do anything anyway, except to cancel your valid warranty. RAM upgrade can be done by notebook owner and it will not cancel your warranty.

Hi

I?ve lost the disk which u restore with. Is there any other way to restore it.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - lost restoring disc

Toshiba notebooks can be restored to ?factory settings? on two ways:
1- Using Toshiba recovery DVD
2- HDD recovery installation as described on - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm

If none of these ways work for you, you must order new recovery disc on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

Hi

Of course it?s color cam.
It?s a common webcam? Do you have just black/white webcam picture?

Furthermore in the ?Image? tab you will find some controls like: brightness, gamma, hue, saturation and sharpness. Play around with these settings.

So is the data on D safe if I use recovery?

thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite C660/C660D will using recovery erase data on D partition?

Hi

From my knowledge using Recovery Disk would format the whole HDD and all partitions would be created again during this process.
This means that your data on D partition is not safe.

But from my experience the usage of HDD recover would format only the system (C) partition? not quite sure if this applies to all the Toshiba notebooks so possibly you should test this first time? in such case would recommend backup the data in case D partition would be erased.

I'm trying to fix this laptop for a girl I know, I've built machines and fixed many before and this is my first time needing help but I am stumped.

Basically she told me her hard drive had stopped working, this was verified by a third party. I told her what hard drive to buy, she got it and I installed it.

I initially tried to install windows 7 from a USB, it was recognised in the but I was getting a failure.

I assumed something was up with the USB so tried to install from CD which is also failing:

[ CD/DVD&nbsp;&nbsp; TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633C] is failed<br><br>The hard drive is recognised.

I have tried changing the SATA controller mode to compatibility, which is the only other option from AHCI

Somewhere it pops up Media Test failure, check cable but very quickly so I barely can read it, but CD, hard drive and USB's are all recognised.

Any thoughts? I've had this laptop for a couple of weeks now, she is getting understandably impatient, please help :/

My Toshiba C660D has become very slow responding to all commands. The fan is constantly on. I have downloaded SpeedFan app and it indicates GPU at 81 Celsius and Core at 80... All updates installed to date. I'm told this may be to some issues with cooling system.

Answer:Satellite C660D-15X - Overheating and Slow

Hi

As I can see on the screenshot the temperature is not on the critical level.
I don't know how long do you use preinstalled OS but in my opinion your machine needs a bit “maintenance”.
I recommend you to clean it up. You can buy compressed air and clean it up and make cooling vents free of dust.
What can be done too is to reinstall OS. Back-up all your important data and reinstall original recovery image. After doing this optimize preinstalled OS and I’m pretty sure your machine will run much faster and quieter.

Hi all,

I have a friends C660D-19X PSC1YE here because after 2 yrs it works more and more slowly.
Part of the problem should be the RAM with only 2GB too.

We tried to reset the device with installing an acronis image from the time 2012 as all works fine.
Did this and also Windows update over 9 hours and more than 1000 MB.
But after a lot of restarts it works to slowly.

So we think we should try the originally chipset driver.
But in which package is this inside on the download page by Toshiba? What name has it?

Should be an AMD chipset. Right? Should we find a better offer on the AMD page?

If this doesn't work too we will try to recover from recovery partition.

What do the experts say?

Answer:Satellite C660D-19X works slow - search for chipset driver

Hi

In my opinion you are on the wrong trace?
First of all chipset driver has nothing to do with the notebook performance.

As you said, the notebook was equipped with 2GB RAM.
This isn?t the best configuration. I would recommend you upgrade the RAM up to 4GB.

Furthermore the replacement of HDD to SSD drive would provide the best performance boost.
You don?t believe how fast the notebook could run using SSD drive.

Last but not least all the processes and applications running in the system background would slow down the notebook. Mostly such background applications can be disabled from loading while booting the system. I recommend you to use some freeware software like CCLeaner. This helps you to clean the registry and to remove the temporal stored files. Also the background processes could be disabled which appear in StartUp tab

So as I said, forget the chipset driver. It?s already installed and part of the image?.
You need just to pimp up the system

Just bought this laptop at Argos a week ago. I know other people have had similar problems. Basically the whole things runs really slowly whatever you do, escecially when you go on the internet. Takes ages for anything to happen, then you end up with multiple windows open and the whole thing freezes up.

On the suggestion of some people on this forum, I removed the free McAfee anti-virus and installed my own Norton one instead.

I installed the BIOS update when prompted to by the Toshiba updates.

Another problem is that there are about 36 windows updates which the machine is trying to download but it keeps failing to install them and then tries again every time you switch it on.

Any advice appreciated.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Very slow and freezes

Hi buddy,

> Basically the whole things runs really slowly whatever you do
Does it happen with preinstalled Windows version or have you installed your own version? What additional software programs you have installed and have you connected any external devices?

> Another problem is that there are about 36 windows updates which the machine is trying to download but it keeps failing to install them and then tries again every time you switch it on.
I would recommend installing Service Pack 1 before you start with single Windows updates. You can download the whole Service Pack 1 on official Microsoft Website. After installation try to download Windows updates again.

Hi

I have a C660-2E1 which has always run very slow since I bought it two years ago and I know I should have done something about it before now.

I noticed that it only has 1GB RAM, could this be the problem?

I was going to replace the 1 GB with a 4 GB Module.Does anybody know if this needs to be a 2X2 GB matched pair or can I use a single module?

I understand that as I`m running Windows 7 home edition that it can only address a maximum of 4GB?

Answer:My Satellite C660 is running very slow

Yes, 1GB RAM is definitely not enough to get the notebook running smoothly.
I recommend you to upgrade the notebook up to 4GB RAM or higher? the RAM can be extended up to 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB RAM)

The compatible RAM modules are:

2GB PC2 DDR3 1333MHz (part number PA3918U-1M2G)
4GB PC2 DDR3 1333MHz (part number PA3918U-1M4G)

Answer:Satellite C660-1ZM is running very slow

What are ?basic programs for you??
What happen exactly?

I believe you that your notebook pretty slow is. Preinstalled OS must be configured properly.
You must remove all useless stuff from the system, configure start-up option to avoid long start-up and have better notebook performance.

Can anyone help solve my ongoing problem with Satellite C660-23r?

It's quite possibly the slowest competer i have ever used. To perform any task on this machine has become extremely tiresome, even opening internet explorer takes at least one minute to load up not to mention the hassle switching tabs.

Is there a simple solution to this frustrating problem? Is it faulty?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660-23R - slow performance

Hmm, this seems rather bizarre! If it has been like this since purchase, then I reckon it is indeed a faulty machine. If it started out okay and got really slow all of a sudden, this indicates some sort of spyware/virus.

You could try scanning your machine using "Spybot - Search and Destroy". Here is also a list of commonly used anti-virus software - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_antivirus_software

Pay attention to the column on the right hand side, it shows which software is free and which isn't.

If this does not help you, then I recommend wiping your hard drive. This is not as easy as it used to be, the powers that be do not seem to like people taking control of their own paid-for product and cleaning it, instead they'd rather you bought a new one. Google "windows 7 how to wipe hard drive" or something similar, there are many guides out there.

Good luck!!

Hi,

I was asked to replace a screen on my sons Satellite C660, which a did,
After testing the laptop I noticed it was incredible slow. I asked him why it was so slow and he said it had always been that slow since he purchased it from Argos 10 months ago ( it?s his first laptop and he is not very computer savvy)

Anyway I ran an anti-virus scam and spyware scan and nothing was found.
So I decided to do a factory reset (f8) but the problem is still there.
My other son who lives with me as the same laptop ( only difference his is a pro) and difference between then like night and day,

I notice that the physical memory is always on about 93% with nothing running in task manager and his fan keeps coming on every minute or so.

Any suggestions regards D

Answer:Slow Satellite C660 - physical memory 93%

What is the exact model number of the Satellite C660-xxx
How much memory RAM does this notebook support?

Mostly the system runs slow due to high amount of processes running in the background.
It?s advisable to check the startup tab in MSCONFIG and to disable some not really important processes .
I recommend also cleaning the system using CCLeaner and possibly the RAM should be upgraded if it?s too low.

The keyboard on my Satellite C660-108 is very slow in response. Some characters are not displayed at all, some only after a short delay. This is very inconvenient when typing text and passwords (!) because I have to double check everything I type (and 1 out of 3 words has spelling errors, due to the keyboard issue)

Is there a way I can troubleshoot what's wrong?

Thanks,

Herbert

Answer:Satellite C660-108 - Slow keyboard response

Hi buddy,

As you can read in many other threads you have to update the BIOS to get rid of this problem.

Toshiba has already released an article about what you should do:

A few days ago I purchased a new battery (10.8V, 4400mAh) on Amazon (from Batterytec) for my Toshiba Satellite C660-13Q PA3817U-1BRS , 10.8V, 4200mAh .

The Problem is that this battery takes about 12 hours to charge: it's very very slow!!!

I've already done a complete charging cycle to calibrate it and the battery life is of 2 hours and 25 minutes, after calibration. With the original toshiba battery (fault) I never had this problem.

What can I do to solve the problem of "slow charge"?
Is it a defect in the battery?
such behavior is normal?

Thanks in advance

Any Suggestions.

Answer:Satellite C660-1F1- Slow after recovering from DVD's and fans constantly running

Hi,

Try to optimize OS version. Check start-up options and disable all applications that you don’t need.
Be sure all useless applications will not start with OS. Remove from the system all stuff you don’t need.
Play a bit with all this.

Hi, I've recently started to experience problems with the above laptop, during start up the screen hangs on the "windows" screen, the HDD light does not function either.
The computer does load up eventually, but is very slow.

Please note, the laptop was recently dropped only from a relatively sho height - the problems started shortly after.

I do believe it may be the Hdd, Pls assist.

Thanks

I agree with you. It is probably HDD hat doesn?t work properly anymore.
HDDs are not expensive and you can exchange it alone so I recommend you to obtain new HDD, exchange it, install original recovery image and test functionality.

If you need some assistance you are welcome.

Hello Forum - I hope someone can help.

My kids (PC people) run a C660-IST (two years old). I say 'run' - the machine is going at a snail's pace. Confession - their dad has only ever worked on Apple (I know, i know....) so [email protected] thrashing around trying to help them. With limited success.

I've found something called 'Computer' and it says:

Hard Disk Drives (3)

WINDOWS (C:) 81.3 GB free of 149 GB
Data (D:) 141 GB free of 148 GB
Microsoft Office Click-toRun 2010 (Protected) (Q:)

I had supposed that the kids had simply filled up the memory running games (Sims and Zoo Tycoon) but - looking at the memory available that doesn't seem to be the case.

So I ran the 'Diagnostic Tool' programme. Everything looked fine....until it ran the 'HARDDISK'. And it says 'FAIL' in the 'results' box.

That's as far as I've been able to get. Not sure why the 'FAIL' result is there. Not sure what the kids can have done to the machine for this to happen.

Two questions:

- would the 'HARDDISK FAIL' be the cause of the machine running so slowly?

and

- is there anything I can do to try and fix the problem?

Please be gentle with any response - PC management is NOT my forte!

Many thanks

Helpless Dad

Answer:Satellite C660 is running slow - hard disk 'fail'?

> would the 'HARDDISK FAIL' be the cause of the machine running so slowly?

Yes, a faulty HDD can be the reason for slow notebook performance.

> is there anything I can do to try and fix the problem?

There are some things which should be clarified.
If its an physical HDD problem, the only one real solution is: HDD replacement.
If the issue is related to bad sectors and files stored on the HDD, the solution might be much easier:
First of all I would recommend cleaning the system using CCleaner (freeware software)
You could delete the temporal stored files.
Additional you could defrag the HDD partitions .
Here a nice article from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx#fbid=opdomAEomx0

but finally if you would not notice any improvements, you could format the HDD and install the system again using the Toshiba recovery disk.

Hi folks,

my 2009 toshiba a300 is a great laptop but after 5 years of usage it slows down a bit.
I tried to upgrade it with new CPU - unfotrunatlly BIOS won't let it run.

So let me show you my current specification: T2390 1,86MHz dual core, 4gb of 533 RAM, HD3470 GPU, windows 7 64bit home premium and to speed everyting up I recently bought 120gb 840 evo ssd.

Results? Horrible..
17,4mb/s while copying random file.

Guys, help me.
It has got the lastest intel ich8 drivers (I can't install Intel Rapid Storage - don't know why "this platform is not supported"), GPU beta drivers, Samsung Magician ssd frimeware fully updated, Bios 1.80 WIN. Boot time is very slow too.

Answer:Satellite A300-1ED - super slow SSD performance

>Results? Horrible..
I'm not quite sure but think that the SATA HDD controller supports SATA I ? so you can expect the theoretical speed of 150 MB/s. (or lower) but to be 100% sure you should install some hardware diagnostic tools like Everest Home Edit or AIDA64. In best case it could be SATA II

What SATA mode is set in BIOS? AHCI or compatible?
In case it?s set to compatible mode, the SSD drive would not use the SATA properties.

In order to use SATA performance, you have to set AHCI in BIOS and while Win 7 system installation, you should add the SATA driver (part of the intel storage manager package IRST)

Hi,

Can someone please help,

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D for my nephew, We have forgotten the administrator password and we don't have password reset disk is there anyway around this.

Thanks

Answer:I forgot my administrator password on Satellite C660/C660

Hi

I assume you are talking about windows system password and not about BIOS password. Right?
It?s not very big problem if you forgotten the System password but if you mean BIOS password then you are in trouble because the BIOS password can be deleted just by an Toshiba ASP technicians?

So I assume you mean Windows password? so start the notebook and press F8
Now you can choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.
This would start a HDD recovery procedure which would reinstall the system? during the setup you can set anther admin password.

Of course there are some other methods but as far as I know this requires 3rd party software/tools or Win 7 DVD? so I think the HDD recovery is the fastest solution.

I have a Satellite L300-PSLB8E. It came with Vista Home Premium. After I made my recovery DVDs, I made a SATA disk from the drivers downloaded from the Toshiba website. I did the F6 thing, but kept still getting a blue screen when the setup program got to the "starting windows". I changed the SATA from AHCI to Compatibility in the BIOS and then managed to install XP without the SATA Disk. What is strange is that the sound lags and the disk access is super slow. I ran a speed test program and it showed that the HDD performance is only 5% of the performance in Vista. I have actually tested this on another identical laptop that was downgraded and it had the same problem. Any advice? Is it the AHCI Mode?

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-PSLB8E runs super slow on Windows XP

>I changed the SATA from AHCI to Compatibility in the BIOS and then managed to install XP without the SATA Disk

This is the reason why your L300 is running slowly using the Win XP.
You have set the SATA to compatible mode and now the HDD is not able to use the SATA performance.

Your notebook would run faster using the SATA mode and the SATA drivers.

I live in South Korea. The internet here is unbelievably fast. I've done 3 speed tests tonight, and the download speed averages between 20-40mbps, upload speed between 40-75mbps. However, when I try to watch streaming videos online, it's ridiculously slow. And it's not just one site. It seems to be all of them. Youtube, Comedy Central, BBC, and MSNBC have all been really slow. I notice it the most around 10:00-11:00pm here (only because that's when I come home from work), which is right at the same time most Americans are starting to go to work. Is it possible that the United States 9-5 workforce uses up so much bandwidth on their morning rounds through the internet that it could devastate my access to streaming video here?

A brief synopsis: The majority of videos I try loading require an obscenely long buffer time (upwards of 20 minutes for a 2 minute video). Not always, but usually. However, oftentimes YouTube will only buffer the first 20% or so of the video. So after I play it for a little bit, it inevitably catches up with the buffer and I have to wait again. Even video quality as low as 240p still sometimes takes an awfully long time to load.

Does anybody have any theories? I was able to watch the presidential debate earlier today live just fine (10am here, 7pm Denver time). Am I just trying to play videos at peak bandwidth times? Are there any ways around this? Could there be another explanation? This has been a rather consistent problem since I got i... Read more

Americans use the Internet non-stop round the clock, so that's not the probable reason. I think your ISP is throttling your speed for videos sites. You should contact your ISP and complain.

We recently got 100Mb fibre optic broadband from Virgin Media, but it's been 2 days now and various speedtests report only 2-3Mbps. Other computers around the house get around 20Mbps (none have 100Mbps).

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron N5110, so it's not old, and I run both Linux and Windows 7 (dual boot) - neither OS gets more than 2-3Mbps. I've also tried moving to various spots around the house, to no avail.

I also tried downloading a large torrent (legal) with thousands of seeders to see how fast it would download, and it stuck at around 1Mbps, never any faster.

Why is this? If we're paying for 100Mbps, surely I should expect more than 3Mbps? Other computers on the same network get 10 times this so the issue is with my laptop?

Thankyou for sorting out my Desk top. (From which I am writing this.)

Now, my office laptop has gone on strike. It is an HP Pavillion XP. I have already downloaded HihackThis and the Analyzer, to C:\ HJT, but I am not sure how to disable the 'system restore' to begin the log.

It was going slow before I took a short break, and yesterday, having taken an age to start up, it then kept sticking. At one point I timed it taking 3 mins to open the menu from 'Start' and then another 7 mins to open the 'Programme' menu!

I did an NAV Update- 3 times -as it would not install after downloading. So, I followed the Symantec site advice and downloaded the Intelligent Updater direct. Then I ran LiveUpdate again. I assumed the virus updates would be complete, but they ALL updated again. But, this time successfully. Then I did a scan, but all was OK. I noticed, however, that the laptop was working much better after this action, at least it IS working.

Recently, (before this) after failing to download SP2 on Dial-Up, the hard drive crashed. I took it to a 'PCDoctor' had the disk backed up, and they re-installed from the CD QuickRestore System Recovery, before re-installing from the backup copy. (In fact, I had to return it to be re-done as they had obviously used their own CD not my original one.)

Just recently got rid of spyware from this computer. It was running just fine. I downloaded spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm on my system. Didn't seem to have any problems. I went out of town on Saturday and when I tried to use my computer on Sunday, it acted like it had crashed. I reset my monitor, first and a pop up floated on the screen that had something like no connection found. Then I rebooted my computer without any problems. No sign of the pop up that was floating around before. However, my internet connection browsers (IE & Mozilla) & Outlook Express have been extremely slow, sometimes taking over 5 minutes to load webpages. My email has sometimes stalled and had to start over again and I get 4 or 5 of the same email.
I uninstalled spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm, hoping they were the cause of my slow internet connection. NO such luck. I called my service provider (cable connection) and they report there have been no problems with the connection in my area.

Hello!

I am the owner of the notebook series satellite, model Toshiba Satellite C660D-164 (PSC0WE-00R00URU) and I do not know where to find drivers for WiFi, hotkeys and video card. My operating system is windows xp 2 SP.
Please help me.

Answer:Need WXP drivers for my Satellite C660D-164

Problem is that this new notebook model is not supported for old WXP so with drivers you are on your own.
WLAN driver you can find on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/wlan/?page=downloads and you probably need Broadcom WLAN driver version 5.60.48.35.
The same graphic card has older Satellite C650D (PSC16E) so try to install all WXP stuff listed for this notebook model.

Hy there,

My laptop (Toshiba Satellite C660D-10M) came with Free-DOS. I have installed WIndows 7 and all the required drivers from Toshiba website except the driver for my Network Adapter. I can't go to the Internet because of this!

From this page: http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU

I enter the correct info:

Notebook - Satellite - Satellite C Series - C660D - PSC0WE - Windows 7 32bit.

A) There are no CHIPSET drivers for my laptop here? But i think they are merged with the DISPLAY DRIVER and i could install only them.
B) LAN DRIVER - after installing this driver, in my DEVICE MANAGER -> Network Controller has a question mark and is not installed.

Checked BIOS - it is enabled.

Uninstalled, found my NIC SPecific driver on realtek website. Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet. -> Installed the driver for win7, ----- NOTHING!!!

I don't know what to do next?

Please can you help me?

You are right about chipset driver. By AMD based notebooks it is integrated with display driver.

The same LAN card has Satellite C660D ? PSC0UE so the right Win7 32bit LAN driver you can find HERE . It must work. All offered drivers are tested.
Please test it and send some feedback.

Have you installed WLAN driver?
Be sure unknown device in device manager list is definitely related to LAN and not WLAN card.

1. Laptop was left on for several days unattended

2. When next it was looked at there was a Windows error message that Windows had not closed down correctly and that the computer should be restarted in Safe Mode BUT at that time the whole keyboard was inoperative so, although the touch pad still worked, it was not possible to start in Safe Mode as neither the Return key nor the Enter key would work.

3. I then tried to reset the computer by switching it off, disconnecting the AC power and removing the battery. However, when I reconnected the battery and AC supply, the computer wouldn't power up at all - no lights, no fan, absolutely nothing. I have also tried pressing and holding the power on button with no AC supply or battery connected. Nothing

4. Any ideas? Is this a dead motherboard?

When you connect notebook to AC power supply are DC-in and battery LED ON?
Have you maybe noticed flashing power LED?

On this virtual way it is not easy to say for sure what the problem is. It can be power supply electronic. All such important parts are placed on the mainboard.

You cannot use and VGA to HDMI cable?
The VGA provides analog signal, HDMI provides digital signal?
It NOT possible to convert analog to digital signal!

So if your notebook provides only VGA port, so you have to use and VGA to VGA (RGB) cable.

I've just unpacked my Toshiba Satellite C660D-10L laptop, and problem is that I cannot find any drivers. My computer came without OS in it, so I will install Windows 7 or XP, but problem is that I cannot find apropriate drivers... There is no drivers for 10L.
My biggest problems are WLAN card drivers.

Can anybody tell me what is wifi chipset in this laptop? Realtek? Broadcom? Atheros? and what model... I've found some drivers for 660D, but none are specified to 10L.
Also when I try to find my computer trough serial number or part number it doesn't find it... I didn't even start using it and already I'm little bit dissapointed with support.

Answer:Need drivers for Satellite C660D-10L

I've found wlan drivers but only for win7 64bit version, there is none for 32bit...

Hi,
I have problems burning CD/DVD on my Satellite C660D-1GH under Win 7 x64. With the standard windows explorer burning - the process starts however it is incredibly slow and after 2 hours of burning 1 MB file on 4GB drive - it dispays an error that there is no enough space.

I installed CD Burner XP - it doesn't even recognize the burner.
Any ideas how to fix that?

Answer:Cannot write CD/DVD on my Satellite C660D-1GH

Can you please test functionality with some ?well known? application like NERO burning ROM?

By the way: do you use original preinstalled OS that you got with your notebook?

Hi,

Hoping that someone can help me.
I have had the above machine now for approx 2 months and it is so unbelievably slow. It has 6GB ram and a dual core processor and was bought to replace a 4 year old other notebook.

It constantly hangs while loading pages. farmville being the worst offender, however it happens with all pages.
I am at a complete loss as to why what should be a quite capable machine cannot cope with the most basic of tasks that an old Dell has no problems with at all.

I have searched the forums and have read about possible software conflicts, however all i have loaded is AVG software.

If someone could please point me in the right direction, I'm now seriously thinking of contacting Toshiba for my money back this machine is that bad.

Answer:Performance issues with Satellite C660D-181

Hi

I know what you mean? I think I can help you?
I had a similar problem with new notebook? the point is that many different applications run in the background and this might slow down the performance. The CPU and RAM might be overloaded. In your case I would recommend disabling some not necessary processes.

But first of all download and install the CCleaner. This is free software which allows you to clean the registry and remove the garbage from system.

Then start the msconfig and switch to the tab called ?Startup?.
Here you will find all processes which are loaded at the startup, while booting up the windows.

Remove the mark in order to disable the process.
If you don?t know exactly what is controlled by the single process, don?t disable this.

Hello,

I've recently got a Satellite Pro C660D-187,
When do i "update drivers". I'm not technically minded so don't have much of a clue, unfortunately.

Many thanks, C

Answer:Satellite Pro C660D-187 - When should I update drivers?

Hi

I would update the driver only if I would notice some problems with my notebook.
For example if WLan connection would not be stable; I would update the driver for Wlan card?

But I always follow this advice: never change a running system? you know?
OF course windows updates should be always done to close security leaks?

I started system recovery via F8 on my Satellite C660D-15X and when it started the process where the command box starts up with the "X drive" process I accidently touched keys on the laptop and it froze so I decided to restart the computer and I ended up with the message

"BOOTMGR is missing
press ctrl - alt - del to restart"

There was no discs which came with my computer but I did do a backup of the recovery discs when I first turned on the laptop out of the box originally although these discs dont do nothing?

What do I need to do to fix my computer or should I just take it to pcworld and let them do it?

Thanks
Anthony

Answer:Satellite C660D-15X - Bootmgr is missing

Hey,

> There was no discs which came with my computer but I did do a backup of the recovery discs when I first turned on the laptop out of the box originally although these discs dont do nothing?
That means you have created the Toshiba recovery disk using Toshiba recovery media creator or what have you done exactly?

This bootmgr error message means that the boot manager of Windows is corrupt and therefore you have to reinstall Windows. You can do this with Toshiba recovery disk that can restore the original out of box settings.

Everything what you have to do is booting from recovery disk and follow the screen instructions. All drivers and tools will be installed automatically.

Hi,
I have Satellite C660D-13H and I just wanna to work with win XP but unfortunatley i can't find any drivers for my model on Toshiba site. It is possible for that model to work with XP? Because that CPU is too weak for Win 7?!
Can somebody help me?

Thanks in advice,
S. Stoev

Answer:Drivers for Win XP Toshiba Satellite C660D-13H

Hi

It seems that Win XP is not supported on Satellite C660D and therefore you cannot find the drivers on the Toshibas driver pages.
But even if the Win XP drivers are not available, you can install Win XP.
But you will have to search for the XP drivers at your own hand.

Here is a nice document how to determine the needed drivers:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=78

You can also try some XP drivers released for other notebook models like Satellite C650D

But I recommend using Win 7 since this is the best OS from Microsoft.
The CPU is not too weak. Even my 6 years old notebook uses Win 7. I installed this OS and it runs properly.

I'm trying to improve a Toshiba Satellite laptop for a friend of mine who says the laptop just isn't pulling its weight when doing things like watching films, etc.

I've noticed that the processor in the laptop is a 1.3GHz dual core AMD E Series chip.
I've also noticed that the chip has Radeon shader clocks on it as well, so it's not as simple as just swapping it for a faster CPU that runs on the same socket.

I was wondering if there's a list of compatible processors somewhere which I could use as a reference.

I believe the chip that's in the laptop at the moment is an E300.
I've done some digging and apparently there's an E450 CPU which operates on the same 18 Watts and has the 80 shader clocks and other similar features, but has the a core speed of 1.6GHz.

Before I attempt to buy and fit a CPU like that, I want to make sure that it will work in the laptop and that there aren't any better CPUs I should be using instead. Please advise.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers
Adrian

Answer:Satellite C660D-1GD Compatible Processors

Hi

CPU upgrade is always tricky because its not supported officially by any notebook manufacturer.
Therefore you can do that but just at your own risk.

The notebook supports AMD A50M chipset and as far as I know the C660D/C665D/Pro C660D Series is based on a Dual Core/Quad Core Processor series with AMD Champlain core CPU.

CPUs with Champlain core can be identified by CPU ID.
CPU id numbers of Champlain CPUs are 100F53 and 100F63.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Phenom_microprocessors#Phenom_II_mobil e_processors

However, first of all you should ensure that chipset would support the new CPU. If it does, then there would be still an question regarding the BIOS support.
Unfortunately, there are no details if BIOS would support other CPUs since such upgrades are not supported? so I see just one option for you: you need to test it at your own risk?

Hi all,
I've had my C660D for a couple of years now without any major issues cropping up. However, a few days ago, I switched it on and everything was loading as normal (the desktop loads fully), but then the fan became very loud and the laptop froze and was unresponsive.

It keeps repeating this problem, it is useable for the best part of 2 minutes then freezes again. I have managed to do system restore and even took it apart to clear the fan out, but still the problem persists. I have tried safe mode, but still get the same problem.

Please help!
Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660D is freezing after start-up

it is not easy to say what is wrong there and why this happen. If somehow possible try to back-up all your data and install OS again using original recovery image. After doing this you will have ?factory settings? and if there is no some hardware problem everything should be OK again.

I know it is most radical method but, in my opinion, most effective to check hardware functionality and test if such issues can be related to some software problem.

What do you think?

So my laptop is unrecoverly dead ;(
(Toshiba Satellite C660D-1D3)
but the HDD still works (Toshiba HDD2L04 320GB)
the problem is, I protected it with a password that I can't disable.

I have the password, I also could save all my important files running it from an old crappy HP laptop.

But now I would love to use it as an external drive, which I cant as long as it has the protection (I tried a few pcs, none worked).

When I try to disable it in the BIOS from the old HP, it asks me about a second password, a master user password... but I have never had one in my Toshiba :/

What now? Do I have to go to a store and try it from another Toshiba or is there a tool to disable the pasword from windows or linux?

Answer:Satellite C660D-1D3 - How to remove HDD password?

Hi

The unknown HDD password cannot be removed… even the Toshiba authorized service provider will not be able to remove such unknown HDD password.
In such case the HDD will be useless

Take a look into this Toshiba FAQ:

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, but not to Toshiba Laptops,

I bought my girlfriend the Toshiba C660D-181 earlier today, and myself, i think it's a great laptop for the price. Especially the amount of Ram
and the Graphics Card.

One thing i'm confused on is the 3D Capable part.
What is meant by 3D Capable, what does it enable me to do? Do i need extra hardware?
I've no idea how to use this feature, or what it actually does. I know 3D capable usually means (Well on 3Dtv's) that you can view 3D content with the use of Glasses,
but how exactly does it work, if so, on this computer?

I'm a little confused on this to be honest, and any help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance!

Paul

Answer:Satellite C660D-181: Questions about 3D feature

Hi

The notebook is equipped with the AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphic card.
This graphic card supports the 3D Graphic Accelerator and a 120 Hz screen supports 3D, Toshiba TruBrite HD and LED backlighting.

This means the screen is 3d compatible so you can see 3d on the screen with DLP or polarized or shutter (all are special and rare) glasses.
Therefore the notebook is 3D ready.

You will need such glasses in order to watch 3D content.

As far as I know satellite C series are offered with ?standard? 60Hz displays and none of them can be used for 3D.

Hi there,

I've got a Toshiba Satellite C660D-102 operating Windows 7. Basically, if my computer is left unattended and goes to screensaver, it freezes and needs to be restarted by holding down the power button. If I'm listening to music, it makes a screeching noise when it does this until it is turned off.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?
Thanks, Matt

Do you use standard Windows screensaver?
Have you installed some additional software that runs in the background?

Sorry for all these questions but it is not easy to give you simple and precise answer what the problem can be.

Answer:Satellite C660D-155 battery problem

>How can I find out if the problem is the laptop or the battery ?

To test this you will need a new good tested battery :(

But in many cases the battery needs to be pre-charged? this happens if the notebook was not used for a longer time?if this is a case, then connect the AC-Adapter to allow the system to pre-charge the battery. I read that such pre-charge process can take up to 3 hours.
Once this process is finished the notebook should automatically start the normal battery charging procedure.

I have the following problem on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit with SP1:
I started with an absolutale fresh install of Windows, and following Toshiba drivers were installed: AHCI, Display driver, LAN and WLAN drivers, Sound driver, Webcam and TouchPad drivers. At this time some of the Fn keys were working (but not all and without OSD indicator). Then I installed the Value Added Package, and just the volume up/down Fn keys (Fn+3/4) were working. I have tried all the settings of the Flash Cards application, but did not help. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the Value Added Package, but just with the Flash Cards application (the other applications were not selected). The symptom was the same.

(Of course I rebooted the system after every installation.) When I uninstalled the Value Added Package, the same Fn keys were working again as at the beginning.
I have tried also Value Added Pachage v1.3.22 and v1.3.19.

How can I use all the Fn keys (with OSD indicator would be the best)?

Hi, I've had this laptop for about a month now and everything was fine up until a few days ago when a few strange things started happening.

Firstly, at random times it wont let me scroll using the touchpad and secondly it won't let me click anything on the task bar or tabs on my internet browser and sometimes nothing on the screen is clickable at all. Another problem is, just randomly I'll be typing and the right click options will keep flashing up and if I press left click, it doesn't stop it, the right click options keep showing.

All of these started at the same time so I guess they're related. The only solution is If I use the task manager to stop explorer and then run it again then it works again for a while but it's just unpredictable when it will happen again but it happens for about 60% of the time I'm using the laptop. It's getting really frustrating now as I've got lots of work on at the moment and slows me down having to run task manager all the time.

Please can someone shed some light on what they think might be causing this and how I can solve it. Thanks :)

Hello,

I just bought a Laptop Toshiba Satellite C660D-1GR last Week :
Windows 7 Home Premium
AMD E-300 APU with Radeon (tm) HD Graphics 1.30 GHZ
AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics
Driver date 28/06/2011
Driver version 8.863.0.0
64 bit Operating system
Screen Resolution 1366x768

My old HP laptop has broken up, and I needed a laptop to practice my driver licence theory tests and hazard tests (videos)
I also regularly watches dvdrip tv shows.

The one thing I realized immediately was the really bad quality of the video resolution, I am watching the exact same videos than my old computer, I can even see the pixels ...
On some of the drivers hazards tests, I can't even recognize the details of the videos.

This is what I tried without any result
I tried downloading latest version of Directx
I tried other video players , VLC, Media Players
I tried updating the video driver
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the video driver

Unfortunately all of this did not help

do you have any idea of what I should do now ?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660D-1GR - Bad Video Resolution

>do you have any idea of what I should do now ?
Good question but not easy to give you proper answer. Obviously you make comparison between old and new notebook.
Out of curiosity but do both notebooks have identical display with identical native resolution?
If yes then I can understand your question but if not then I really don?t know what to say about it.

Put original DVD movie or start some HD video from YouTube and you will see that video resolution will be perfect.
I?m afraid this software you use s old and designed for PCs/Noteboks with old ?standard? resolution of 1024x768.

However when I unpack the Bios update for a Tosh c660D I see there are 2 folders, each with 2 .ROM files in them.

Folder DIS

BIOS.rom (2048KB)
EC.rom (128KB)

Folder UMA)

BIOS.rom (2048KB)

Well, this is certainly a weird problem with my father's Satellite C660D-140 notebook.

A few days ago, he wanted to use it, but upon booting, it would attempt to boot in PXE. In the BIOS, the hard drive couldn't be found and the hard drive was not making a single sound. I assumed that the hard drive was done for, and since I was already planning on giving the notebook an SSD to speed things up, and had the data backed up, I ordered a Crucial BX100 250GB SSD, and installed that in the notebook, with the screws in place. To my surprise, the BIOS didn't pick it up either!

Then I did what I should have done before ordering the SSD: Checking the hard drive by plugging it into my desktop. And would you believe it: It worked fine. So, the conclusion is that the notebook fails to power the drive, so either the SATA power plug isn't delivering any power to the drive, or insufficient.

What causes this? Nothing weird happened to this notebook, it happened all of the sudden.

Answer:Satellite C660D-140 - No SATA power

On this virtual way it is not easy to offer exact diagnostic and all we can do is to speculate what the problem can be.
In my opinion there is some problem with HDD controller. I presume it is defective so what you need is professional help.

Is the warranty still valid?

Hi, so i got the C660D - 155 Satellite Laptop for my birthday 09/04/1993.
I turned it on, let it do it's own thing to install windows 7, registered as a user and started the laptop as normal.

There where no problems at all at first!
Then suddenly my audio driver decides to just remove itself from my computer (i think it was after a windows update).

To make things worse my firewall is off and i found out that *i am blocked from doing anything that requires administrator rights.*
I can't reinstall my audio driver and i cant turn my firewall back on.
I read that it could be Malware/Virus/Spyware related?! Is that even possible? I have PC Tools Spyware Doc installed and updated to the most recent software.

I have tried the Ctrl+Alt+Del at the main screen to try and log in as admin and that doesn't work...
Why am i not administrator? Who is?!

Any help?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite C660D-155: No admin rights

Hi

I?m not quite sure what you did with the notebook or the system but maybe you should simply try to reinstall this once again using HDD recovery.
If it?s a new notebook then this should not be a problem;
Power up the unit, press F8 then choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.

Setup the OS once again and check if you have the full control.

Hi folks

I'm looking for a recommendation for an SSD for my laptop, Satellite C660D-10W

I want to do a clean build - I have a new licensed copy of Windows 10 Pro.

I bought a Kingston drive following some research online, but subsequently found out from Kingston themselves stating they don't support use of this device in my laptop.

Toshiba customer support put me on to Topaz who recommended product + service (albeit not an SSD!!!) costing in excess of ?250. For that price I can get a like-for-like replacement of the laptop, under warrantee!

I'm looking for a simple option where I can buy an SSD and do the install myself. 250Gb to 500 GB for in the region of ?60ish.

Hi, my dtr has the above notebook, only purchased in sept 2012 (so not too happy!!), and a month or so ago it had a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" problem, so advice was to reinstall Windows and all drivers.

I did try a few re-installs but in the end just did a full recovery (F8-Advanced boot- Repair your computer), and although i can log on in safe mode i cannot log on in normal mode. It went through the first Toshiba installation screen ok (loading drivers etc...35/35) but then when it says finishing installation it just goes on for hours and hours. I have tried going back to the Advanced boot screen (F8) and maybe doing a re-repairing the Windows, but now the "Repair your computer" prompt is not showing on the screen.

I have been told that i will probably need Recovery discs (she forgot to make them!) but not happy with having to pay 35.90eurs for them bearing in mind age of the machine and the amount of use it has had! Needless to say there wont be any more Toshiba products in this household for a good while....

Any info to a limited knowledge techy would be much appreciated...

Please don't be mad on me but I would like to start with this last sentence. I?m really wondering you wrote this. Toshiba systems are not different than other systems offered by other notebook manufacturers. None of them put recovery discs in the box and there is no big difference between Toshiba and some other non-Toshiba notebook.
It is strongly recommended creation of back-up recovery disc that can be used in case if there is some problem with HDD or preinstalled OS.

Anyway, you have two options now: either you can order original recovery disc and install original recovery image (factory settings) or you can install OS using original Microsoft installation disc. Al necessary drivers, tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

If you will decide to install own OS and need some assistance please let us know.
