After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Question: After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

+The digital signature for the drivers for this device is required, can not be verified. Possible after a recent hardware or software change a file that is installed incorrectly signed or damaged, or is malicious software installed from an unknown source. (Code 52)+

+You need to restart the computer to this device changes to take effect.+ (obviously I tried that too)

Can someone please give me some help? I am at the end of my wits.

Preferred Solution: After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

Hi there

I'm completely stuck I have a c660 satellite laptop the keyboard wasn't working.
So I bought a replacement keyboard and installed it and checked in the device manager and it says it's there and is working correctly but the replacement keyboard is still not working.

I have updated bios and uninstalled keyboard drivers and reinstalled them I have done everything I can think off to get try and get this new keyboard working but I am having no luck and could so with some help.

Answer:Satellite C660 - new internal keyboard does not work

Did you ever check if the external USN keyboard works properly?

I?m asking because in case the external keyboard would not work properly, the internal keyboard problem could be related to faulty keyboard controller (motherboard) or system problem.

In case the external keyboard would work properly, you simply had bad luck with the new keyboard. It could be possible that the new keyboard malfunctions.

I have a serious problem with my A60: the keyboard doesn't work any more. I have tried a lot of solutions and the last one, recovery with the Product Recovery DVD-ROM doesn't work, because I can't use the keyboard!!

When the screen with the 3 choices appears, I have no possibility to answer!!
Have somebody an idea???

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Answer:Satellite A60: keyboard doesn't work, recovery DVD can't run

They keyboard might not be the problem or it might not be connected properly to the motherboard the best thing to do is take it to a service centre it shouldn't cost you anything, if it is still under warranty...but if it is just the keyboard and your laptop is out of warranty then it should cost you more than 100-200....can't say how much exactly because I have no idea.

I've been the owner of a Toshiba Satellite C660 for approximately five days, and I'm already experiencing severe keyboard lag. Like users of the L270 model, and other posters on this forum, the keyboard has dramatically slowed down and letters are being omitted, slowing down the typing process.

I've tried to update my BIOS, as numerous posters have suggested, but my BIOS is bang up to date.

I haven't tried removing the battery or anything like that. Frankly if I have to do that to get my keyboard working properly the computer is going straight back and I'm demanding a refund.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Several keyboard lag

I never saw any L270 users here... As far as I know there is no such a notebook model?

Anyway, that?s really strange and I never heard about such a problem on Satellite C660. In my opinion everything what you can do is updating the BIOS and using preinstalled Windows version. If you can still notice the same behavior, ask the seller for a replacement model.

I agree with new: This shouldn?t happen on a five day old notebook.

Good day!

my concern is about my Toshiba laptop I bought it 2 months ago in Europe when I reach in Philippines my son keep on playing it suddenly it was turn off and it didn't open anymore.

I go immediately to Toshiba centre at Cagayan de oro city and I found out that it was the keyboard problem but they could not replace it because there are no available keyboards suited for that laptop. How can I fix it?

Answer:Need new keyboard for Satellite C660-1DG

At first I must say that biggest problem for you is that warranty cannot cover keyboard replacement and you must pay keyboard exchange alone. Notebooks from EMEA (Europe ? Middle East ? Nord Africa) countries have EMEA warranty only so warranty is, unfortunately, not valid.

To be honest I don?t understand why the keyboard must be exchanged if the notebook doesn't start properly.

Anyway, this notebook model has keyboard used on many models so to find new one should not be problem. Best way to order new keyboard is eBay. In last 3 years I?ve ordered several keyboards over eBay. You will not believe me but all of them I ordered from China.

I ordered a set of 2 Toshiba recovery CD's and received them yesterday in order to fix this laptop from a Windows breakdown...

The problem arising at start up is that Windows 7 isn't starting up plus that the hard disk doesn't show in the BIOS (the DVD-drive does) and after the boot sequence the following message comes up: ?Reboot and select proper boot device or insert root media in selected boot device? Someone suggested the drive is broken or the cables to the same detached or lose.

The owner says, that the error first appeared after McAfee offered to "remove 15 errors found on the disk". The laptop has never been opened.

When running the recovery CD 1 the boot sequence starts the recovery but initially shows two pop-ups that indicate that the hard disk cannot be found.

First error message - ERROR: IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO \\. \PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.

Second error message says something like - There is no access to disk #0 or the RAID configuration isn't correct!

After accepting both messages the prompt hands out the error that also appears in this thread...

...and stops at this line...

X:\ windows\ system32 >

...reporting that the recovery failed.

I have fooled around with the advices in this thread...

Answer:Recovery CD's do not recover Satellite C660-1WN

(...continued from first post...)

Left to be said is that I also - before I ordered the recovery CDs - ran the second diagnostic DOS tool in the first table to check the disk and got the following report...

- HDD power cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD interface cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD master-slave setting is incorrect

...and equally that no disk could be detected.

My question is now..., what is wrong here? Is it the physical disk that might be the problem? Is it the software? MBR? Can the latter be restored by some command in the prompt? If, then how? Would it be easier to erase the whole disk and then use the recovery CDs? Or won't this work since the recovery CDs can only work with the recovery information on the disk (I assume that this information is only physically on the disk not on the recovery CDs, isn't this correctly understood)?

I am looking forward to any input and help. Thanks in advance.

I need some help for my sons laptop which is the Satellite Pro C660-1LR.

The hard drive in this laptop completely died, i did not create a recovery disc for this laptops system.
I have purchased a new hard drive which is installed..however as you have guessed i have no access to reinstalling a OS, this laptop runs on windows 7.

I am not really tech savvy so if anyone can advise me please make explain in idiot proof format!! I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-1LR - New HDD but no recovery disc

> I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.
Problem is that you don't have many options about that.
If you want to have ?factory settings? again you need recovery installation disc. You can order it on Of course it is not for free but, in my opinion, definitely the best solution.

You can buy Microsoft installation disc and install own version. You must buy valid licence for it.
In this case you must install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities additionally one by one.

Just in case that you can get this Microsoft installation and licence for free you can save some money.

Believe me the best solution is original recovery disc order.

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Answer:HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me or knows what to do. I have Satellite C660-15r it was turned off properly but when put back on it came up with start windows normally as if it has been interrupted, I clicked ok to that but instead of loading it has gone to do some sort of recovery only it hasn't been able to complete this and instead has said there is nothing to recover.

It is know stuck at this and will not go any further says to get system admin to log in however its not allowing to log in or do anything apart from shut down and restart, I have been trying to factory reset but it will not work at all I have tried many attempts with 0 and other options i have been told this doesn't work but I can get up f2 and f8 on load up all that works ok but I cannot find any option to be able to factory reset. it gives me options to recover but they take me to the same screen with no improvements and safe mode will not work.

I hope someone can help me I will be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-15r stucks and no recovery possible

At first I must say that recovery option is available if notebook has ?factory settings?. After reading your posting I don?t know if you still use original OS installation that you got with your notebook or maybe OS preinstalled on your own.

I presume you didn't create recovery media (DVD) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator, right?
In your situation usage of recovery disc could be easiest way to fix this and install original recovery image.

Can you please post exact notebook model?

My keyboard stopped working and after trying different things I read in other forums I went ahead and replaced it. New keyboard was working perfectly until now that it all came back but slightly different...

Original keyboard wouldn't let me type any numbers and letters, v,b,n,f,g,h,r,t,y, were dead, plus the whole row of F1 to F10. The new keyboard was working perfectly but now mouse pad doesn't work and I get extra letters when I type "R" I get r5y78 instead...""vm" rather than m, and fh rather than h...

I'm not sure whether it's a motherboard issue but it's very strange that usb keyboard and mouse work fine however new keyboard worked great for about a week and now I'm using USB keyboard again...

Any suggestions?

Laptop model: Toshiba Satellite c660
OS: Win 7

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite C660 keyboard not working

If external USB keyboard works correctly, the keyboard controller should be OK. So I don't think its motherbaord problem.
I guess the new keyboard is faulty too and you will need to get another try and will need to replace the keyboard once again.

I am having an issue with the keyboard on my Satellite c660 laptop, part number: PSC1LE.
The best way I can describe it is as a stuttering problem because it comes and go's (fine for a few hours, then not for a short while).

The problem is that for reasons unknown to me I keep encountering a problem where the A, N and Enter keys do not work when pressed. Occasionally pressing the key repeatedly (they aren't jammed) just makes the letter come out, but I can't keep pressing the key five or six times to get one letter. Just to mention, I have not spilled anything on the keyboard.

I have done full anti-virus and spyware scans but have found no issues.
I have this evening done all of the windows updates available to me, however it doesn't seem to have done the trick.

After restarting the device following the updates all worked well for about 15 minutes, until the same three keys stopped working again. On this occasion it lasted only for a couple of minutes, and now I am writing this with the same keyboard.

Note: I am not using the original keyboard. I changed the board due to minor material damage but had it done privately.
However this was done the better part of a year ago and has worked perfectly since being installed, until this new issue occurred in the last few weeks.

If anyone has any further recommendations or suggestions as to what may be the cause or any solutions then please share them.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard issue

I think you would understand that nobody is able to say why your keyboard malfunctions.
Only if the notebook hardware has been checked/scanned, it would be possible to say what?s wrong here?
But generally speaking there is a good workaround to diagnose the problem.

You could connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook and could check if the same problems with the mentioned buttons will occur.

In case the external USB keyboard would work properly, I think that your internal keyboard is the troublemaker? in such case you would need to replace the keyboard once again.

This question relates to a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-1UX Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Some of the onboard keys (E, T, U, I, O, A, B, N, together with the Enter key) fail to register.
All of the other keys tested so far appear to register normally.

When connecting an external USB keyboard, all keys function properly. However, when using either the onboard keyboard or the external USB keyboard, it is necessary to hold down whatever key is selected for approx 2-3 seconds in order for its character to register. This makes typing incredibly slow and is understandably unacceptable.

I've checked device manager looking for errors, but am unable to find any. The driver for the keyboard is listed as installed and working properly, and driver update says that the latest version is in already in use.

I have also scanned for viruses using Malware Bytes and Spybot, and also with the laptops own pre-installed antivirus software. All of the full system scans return a no threat found message.

I have read that the keyboards on these machines can sometime be problematic, which could answer why only certain onboard keys function. The fact that all keys on the external USB keyboard work would seem to confirm this. However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this probl... Hmm? I don?t think so?
The keyboard delay may be related to the settings.

Hi everyone,

I recently updated the BIOS to version 1.60 on my C660 PSC0LE-02300JEN (1 year old) and the keyboard is not working properly at all and at times stops working completely, rendering it not usable (I'm writing this on an external USB keyboard.).

There was a recurring problem a few months before I updated the BIOS with the keystroke being delayed or unresponsive sometimes when typing but in the main it still worked.

So I updated the BIOS, as suggested, and I am getting the following serious problems:

The spacebar is either unresponsive or when pressed writes +2 or +++++++++++++++++++++++ over and over until I stop it by pressing the spacebar again.

None of the numbers work.

At times the whole keyboard stops working and none of the keys elicit a response.

Solutions I've tried:

Taking out the battery.

cleaning the keyboard to get anything dislodged from out underneath the keys.

Reinstalling the 1.60 version of the BIOS.

I'm unsure what to do next and would really appreciate advice and help before I attempt to get the keyboard replaced. It would be great to get an opinion before I payout for a fix.

Replies really welcome.

Many thanks

Answer:Satellite C660 - keyboard is not working

I think this keyboard issue is not related to BIOS update not to other installed software.
Fact is that you can use the external USB keyboard as you said above? this means that the BIOS is ok and also the keyboard controller functions properly?

This means that the issue is related to internal keyboard malfunction. I have no explanation why this happened after the update but it could be simple a bad luck?

In my opinion, the issue can be solved by keyboard replacement.

My daughter has purchased a new laptop - 30 days ago - the keys seem to be playing up.
In particular the arrow keys will not function at all ( the arrows on the number pad are OK though)

The question mark and forward slash key plus the last letter of the alphabet - cannot type the letter!
None of these will function with or without the shift keys.
I have updated the driver - nothing has been spilt on the keyboard.

Is this just a key combination issue or should I return the laptop to supplier.

Does this function pressing other keys; for example Y is Z and Z is Y or @ is ? and so on?
Possibly the keyboard layout does not match the right language.

Check this Microsoft page how to change this:

Otherwise if this will not help you, then I would say its hardware related issue so in such case the keyboard should be replaced by ASP!

Answer:Illuminated keyboard on Satellite C660

Such upgrade is not possible.
Illuminated keyboard needs power supply and it must be connected on small port placed on the mainboard. So if your mainboard doesn?t have it there is no chance to use illuminated keyboard.

If your notebook was delivered with 64bit version you can create recovery disc for this preinstalled version only. With other words, recovery image saved on recovery partition will be saved on empty DVD disc. Nothing more than that.

If you want to use 32bit OS you must check if your notebook model is supported for it and install own version.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

I am the owner of an Toshiba Satellite C660-PSC1GE and my laptop suffers from the known keyboard problem (keys working twice or not working at all).

I already updated my BIOS to the newest version 1.90 which according to Toshiba should have solved the problem. A reboot later the problem is persisting though.
Any suggestions? I really need the laptop to work right now and would really like to avoid to bring it to a shop.

Answer:Persistent keyboard problem on Satellite C660

Indeed the keyboard issue should be solved by BIOS update as mentioned here:

You could also try to press "Fn" key then "N" key then "1" in order to check if the keystroke issue still appears?
But of course it could be possible that the mentioned issue is not the same and possibly its related to keyboard malfunction?
In such case the keyboard should be replaced in order to check if this could help.

By the way: does the external USB keyboard work properly?
It the USB keyboard work properly, then this issue is NOT related to BIOS but possibly to internal keyboard malfunction.

Hi all

I am completely stumped as my keyboard has gone haywire and am quite annoyed i cant fix it

Am running windows 7 on toshiba satellite pro laptop and was wondering if its a software or perhaps hardware issue.

Here is what is happening:

- Caps lock light doesnt stay on anymore but it flashes when i press it. It does still work properly though
- Left SHIFT key still works but when i press also creates this symbol ~ at the same time within UK keyboard. If i change to US keyboard then it enters the PIPE symbol.
- The ~ key above the tab key actually does this ?
- And the pipe key which is above the Enter key types this: #7

I updated the BIOS earlier today but to no avail...

Does anyone have any idea on how i can sort this as its quite frustrating! Thanks for any ideas.

Answer:Keyboard button problem on Satellite Pro C660

>Am running windows 7 on toshiba satellite pro laptop and was wondering if its a software or perhaps hardware issue.

Keyboard is controlled by an Microsoft driver which is part of the Window system.
So the story is quite simple? either your internal keyboard is faulty or the keyboard controller on the motherboard does not work.

How to find out what part is affected?
This is also quite a simple procedure? you need to connect an external USB keyboard.
If you notice the same problems using external keyboard, the problem is related to keyboard controller. If you don?t notice any problems using the USB keyboard, the internal notebook keyboard malfunctions? in such case it needs to be replaced.

I have read that the keyboards on these machines are prone to failure, which could answer why only certain onboard keys function. The fact that all keys on the external USB keyboard work would seem to confirm this. However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this problem.

The keyboard on my Satellite C660-108 is very slow in response. Some characters are not displayed at all, some only after a short delay. This is very inconvenient when typing text and passwords (!) because I have to double check everything I type (and 1 out of 3 words has spelling errors, due to the keyboard issue)

Is there a way I can troubleshoot what's wrong?

Answer:Satellite C660-108 - Slow keyboard response

Hi buddy,

As you can read in many other threads you have to update the BIOS to get rid of this problem.

Toshiba has already released an article about what you should do:

Satellite C660-28H

Win7 64bit

antivirus Kaskpersky deleted "system32/driver/cekbfilter.sys" file for keylogger reason (Kaspersky Support said It is mistake of Kaspersky antivirus, file is not virus or virused), and after I restart OS I find keyboard and touchpad not working at all.

Also I already asked about this at [US Toshiba Forum|] and there was advise to ask here too

I can not use Windows recovery (do not have recovery point) , and I do not want to do full recovery to factory default - there are many soft and personal data stored.

So Is here way to recover drivers? As I already said at US Toshiba Forum - I already tryed delete touch pad driver and instal from Synaptic official website, and I not changed anything.

Also I think antivirus may delete not only file, but do some fixes to remove "wrone" driver

Answer:Re: Satellite C660 - keyboard and touchpad are not working

Huh it is very stupid situation now. I never had such problems but it will be interesting to find solution to this.

Have you tried to connect external mouse, just to see if this can work? I mean it is much easier to use windows with mouse and choose different options.

If this works try to open device manager and properties for keyboard. There you can find option for driver update. Check if some driver update can be found. Fact is that keyboard uses standard Microsoft driver so f you are online maybe some driver can be found.

Of course best and easiest solution for you is recovery installation. If you don?t want to do this try to find right drivers using such driver update option.

One more thing: if you have so important stuff saved on HDD you can remove it from your notebook and connect it to other PC/notebook as external device and make backup. After doing this you can install recovery image and problem is solved.

Hey all,

I have a Toshiba C660 PSC0QE, and recently some of the letters have stopped working. Well I think it happened when my 1year old smacked the keyboard! :[email protected]
Its just random keys but the following are not working;
e, t, u, i, o, z, x, c, v, m, space bar, shift, back space, ctrl, 2,4,8,9 and prob some other keys.

Is this a common fault on these models?
Could a bios update fix this? - how do you perform this?
Or do i need a new keyboard ?

(using this on-screen keyboard is awful)

I've been using my Satellite for like a year now and I am quite happy with its functionality but lately the up arrow (Moving keys) it stuck for a bit when clicked also making a noise which can be quite annoying after a while..

I have checked on internet and I found only videos of totally removing the keyboard of a C660.
Can I just remove a button and put it back or I could damage it even more?

Please advice

Answer:Satellite C660-1PH - keyboard button stuck

As far as I know you cannot repair single buttons. What you can do is to remove keyboard cap and eventually clean the small plastic mechanism placed under the cap.
Later you can place key cap in the right position and press it down gently. When you hear ?click? the cap should be in place again.

If you try to do this be careful and gently.

I have a Satellite C660 that is about to exit the window.

The list of problems are as follows:

Keyboard doesn't work
Mouse pad and button's don't work
USB mouse and keyboard don't work (but light up with power)
It also likes to turn itself off randomly when the battery in but this is the least of the problems.

any ideas as to why this is doing this and what can be done to fix it will be much appreciated.

Answer:Satellite C660 keyboard and mouse not working

I?m wondering about your statement about external USB mouse and keyboard.
I thought that your problem was related to faulty touchpad module and internal keyboard but now I?m thinking that this cannot be the case since the external USB keyboard does not work as well as the external USB mouse.

Probably its more serious hardware malfunction: maybe something related to the motherboard??? Who knows? an hardware diagnostic test needs to be done to confirm this?

Just one question: are you able to access the BIOS? I mean does the F2 keyboard button work in order to access the BIOS?

In an attempt to get the FN key working again, I installed the latest 'Flash Cards Support Utility', which has made the problem considerably worse. No keys on the keyboard work (there is still power going to it, as the number lock light is lit) and the touchpad doesn't respond either, along with its buttons.

I'm guessing it was something to do with what i just installed but i don't really know where to start. I have a usb mouse and a spare keyboard so am able to use the laptop but would be very grateful for any help fixing it.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard and Touchpad failing

Before we start the discussion one question: do you have problem with FN keys only or you cannot use whole keyboard?
What is with touchpad? Is touchpad maybe disabled? Have you installed Synaptics touchpad driver?
It is really not easy to say what is going on there but maybe you should install recovery image and test functionality with ?factory settings?. I mean with clean OS installation everything should be OK. If not there must be some hardware problem.

Hey guys,

In the last few months my laptop had become almost unusuable.

It started off with the odd key stopping working or getting hard to use but now it's happened to a lot of them and last night my touch pad stopped working all together.

I'm not really a tech head and am struggling with this.

I have a Toshiba satellite C660 28T.

Any help would be great thanks.
Maybe even a factory reset?

I wouldn't even know how to do this.

Answer:Satellite C660-28T - Keyboard and touch pad problems

Regarding the keyboard issue:

From my point of few the described keyboard problem sounds like a hardware related malfunction… probably in order to fix it, the internal keyboard should be replaced… just to ensure that your internal keyboard is affected, please attach the external USB keyboard and check whether it would work properly.
If you will not notice any issues, the problem is caused definitely by internal keyboard malfunction and as mentioned before, you would need to replace the keyboard.

Regarding the touchpad:

I’m not quite sure if both issues are related to each other but touchpad can be disabled using the function keys… I recommend you to check this… (function key details can be found also in user manual)… you can also try to reinstall the touchpad drive.

Additional tip: this forum contains many threads about similar issues… therefore I would recommend you to read the recommendations posted in this community.

Hi everyone

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-2JD.

The keyboard has stopped working it only works when the on screen keyboard is selected as soon as I close the on screen keyboard it stops working. I have plugged in another keyboard that won`t work either only the mouse works and the keypad on the laptop works ok. I have used the Ubuntu live CD and the keyboard works with it but not in windows.

I have restored the laptop to factory settings and also done a clean install still does not work only when the on screen keyboard the keyboard works. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem is? It seems something is preventing the keyboard driver from loading up.

Start your notebook and enter BIOS settings. Does keyboard work in BIOS mode?
Have you tested it using \Windows in “safe mode” (F8)?

I have been using a foldable keyboard and a remote keyboard and have been having problems:

1.Characters not showing when typed.
2.Cursor jumping from typing position to another place usually outside the box that I am typing in.
3.Characters repeating while typing.
4.Actions ie Backspace not operating.

These problems do not seem to happen in Gmail and are not happening as I type this.
The problems have occurred so far in Google Calendar,a text doco and login to a site.
The problem did occur with the on board keyboard once so I am wondering if it is a malfunction or a virus.

Any ideas ?.

For me it sounds more like a keyboard malfunction? I cannot imagine that this could be related to the windows OS issue? did you test an external USB keyboard.

Please test this. In such case you can check if it?s really a software problem.
If the USB keyboard would work properly, then this means that your internal keyboard malfunctions.

I've just tried to fix the overheating issue on my satellite C660 by taking it apart and cleaning out the fan,
however I've inevitably messed it up somehow.

Now when I try to power it up, the fan goes, the hard drive makes some noises and the screen stays blank for about 30 seconds then the fan goes mad for a second and everything powers down again.

Does anyone if there is something specific that I've broken and if it is fixable or replaceable.

How did you clean out the fan?

Did you follow a Youtube video on how to disassemble? If not, look for a video and disassemble the laptop again. They replay and reassemble the laptop while you're watching.
You've probably forgotten to put a ribbon cable or a connector in or not tight enough.

Good luck!

Toshiba recovery disc can be created with preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery media creator tool? ONLY.

For recovery DVD creation I recommend you to use DVD-R empty medias only.

Not a licensed image, there was no desire to put, the assembly is an assembly, naturally installed such an operating system behaved badly, buggy.

Done, and now the laptop does not work.
In the service center installation of OS and drivers costs 3500 rbl.

Offensively. So I'm looking for help on the forum.

I have a laptop from a client, that is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-239, and i'm having a strange issue.

The original hard disk failed, and as the laptop is out of warranty, we bought a new hard disk, and ordered the recovery media to this model, from our local toshiba repair assistance.

After the setup copied the files to the disk, the imageX fails when restoring the image files with the error:

"the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

The hard disk is new, and i tried also with more 2 hard disks, and also with an external cd-rom drive.

I talked with the support from the local repair assistance, and they told me this occurs because the new hard drive ins't compatible with the recovery media?!

One of the new hard disks i tried, was the exact same model than the original hard disk, and the error still occurs, so the hard disk can't be the problem.

Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?

Could also be a motherboard problem?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-239 - Error restoring from recovery media

Of course this is possible.
In case the HDD is OK, the recovery media could be corrupted.

>Could also be a motherboard problem?
I don?t think so?. I presume the HDD is recognized in BIOS properly and the error message says something about corrupted directory. I guess the disk directory is meaning and I think media should be replaced.

Firstly please forgive me for being very naive regarding how pc/laptops work. I know a little but nothing more than how to do virus/malware scans and surf the net.

I have a C660-R15 (PSC0LE) laptop. I started having problems with IE8 on windows 7 (this came with the laptop). I noticed that certain webpage icons or drop down menus wouldn't work. At first i thought this was a java problem so made sure that i was running the latest version. But it still persisted. So i then upgraded to IE9 as Windows 7 suggested. This is where the problems increased.

I still cannot use some icons on the webpages and also my laptop is now running very very slow when i try to open folders/programs. The internet runs ok(ish) but sometimes goes just as slow.

I upgraded my BIOS to sort out a keyboard issue i had (it was lagging badly), which fixed the problem and i have also run PC Health Advisor program which says i need a few driver updates.

Is this a Windows 7 problem? Or is there anything else i should be looking at?

Please keep your replies in basic terms as i openly admit i am very much a technophob when it comes to the workings of pcs/laptops.

I don?t think the problem is related to Toshiba?

If your printer and scanner are pretty old I could imagine you don?t get drivers for Windows 7. You have to check this on H P page directly if there are Windows 7 drivers available or not.

If yes download and install them, it?s the same as on other notebooks and computers. If no drivers available your devices are not compatible to Windows 7.

It could be a HDD malfunction that does not allow you to install the system.

So is the data on D safe if I use recovery?

Answer:Re: Satellite C660/C660D will using recovery erase data on D partition?

From my knowledge using Recovery Disk would format the whole HDD and all partitions would be created again during this process.
This means that your data on D partition is not safe.

But from my experience the usage of HDD recover would format only the system (C) partition? not quite sure if this applies to all the Toshiba notebooks so possibly you should test this first time? in such case would recommend backup the data in case D partition would be erased.

Does anyone know how to extract the images and create the media using only the command prompt? (I can get into command prompt by booting from a friend's Win 7 disk). All boot options from the laptop's own drives fail. It says "Windows Failed to Load", and I try Startup Repair but it doesn't find any errors. Any help/thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro C660 - How to make recovery disk with command prompt?

It?s not possible to create recovery disk with command prompt. You have to use the Toshiba recovery media creator on Windows.

Now it?s too late for you but you can order such a disk here:

Hi all

Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).

As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

After own OS installation you cannot create recovery disc anymore and you can not install recovery image using HDD recovery option (F8 at start-up).

Best thing you can do now is to order original disc from Toshiba and use it for recovery image installation. It is definitely easiest way to have ?factory settings? again.
You can order it on

Strange problem. My Satellite C660D-1FM was doing a bunch of updates from Microsoft (hadn't done any updates for ages as it was used by my daughter and not connected to the internet) and after they had completed it rebooted and I got the Toshiba splash screen and then nothing. Holding F8 gives the same problem, tried holding the '0' key while powering on and that was the same. Connected an external monitor and it's the same. I can get into the BIOS and everything looks fine.

So, thinking the hard drive might be faulty I fitted another hard drive and fully installed Win7 from a Microsoft DVD (SP1 and all updates) and everything works. I then thought I'd try and restore the laptop to default factory settings using the Toshiba recovery DVD's which Id created. All worked fine during the install, all 3 DVD's installed and it went through the setup procedure, laptop got to the end when it wanted to reboot, rebooted and now back to the same error - Toshiba splash screen is ok but then it just goes blank. To convince myself I wasn't going mad I then re-installed Win7 from my Microsoft DVD and it installs fine, does all updates and has worked all day today with no issue.

Anyone any idea what's going on?

Answer:Satellite C660 - blank screen after recovery image instalation

Hmmm... something like this should not happen.
Do you use recovery discs for the first time?
Have you noticed the same result on both HDDs?

Problem is that there is no much to do about that and there is no way to change anything while recovery installation runs or later when windows setup is in progress.

Try to set BIOS to default settings and simply try to install recovery image again.

1st time forum poster so be gentle please!

My mum has just brought a Toshiba laptop and it's pretty decent to be fair. Taking a quick look at it though i noticed the recovery partition (that comes with most laptops now) is labelled "D:/Data and is 232GB in size. Seems a bit on the large side for me and wondering if it is incorrect?

Have got a screenshot and if someone could confirm either way i'd be most grateful. Can i attach screenshots?

Thanks in advance

Dear all,

I have a strange problem with my keyboard for several weeks already. It performs strangely - lags all the time. In every program or Internet site (in the different Internet browsers) - characters (it doesn`t matter which one) would once appear and on the next time would simply not. Sometimes they just appear several times while I am typing. Sometimes simply nothing appears on the screen. Another test - pushing down one character for a long period of time would appear on the screen, but would stop for a fractions of the second and then would continue again visualizing on the screen. This is really annoying. You simply can not write. If I hold down a different character individully and slowly, I wouldn`t have any problems, but I can not write in this way.

That is why I decided to format my Windows OS today (XP PRO SP3) - no effect at all. No viruses. I tried from the WIndows services to turn them on and off one by one - no effect again.

After following these steps:

Workaround Procedure
1.Press then release the 'Fn' key
2.Press then release the 'N' key
3.Press then release the '1' key

... the problem just vanished and I was advised to set the new BIOS 1.70 for my computer. After downloading this package:

and after following these steps: (Steps 2) now I have a problem.

I did everything like written in the instructio... Read more

Question about Max Temp For nvidia 315M?
Windows start Freezing after 55 degrees and keyboard lags...

Answer:Satellite C660-1TK Windows start freezing after 55°C and keyboard lags

Keyboard lag can be solved by BIOS update.
Update the BIOS to the latest state.
The BIOS can be downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page.

Furthermore you should clean the cooling fans.
Possibly the dust prevents the fans from rotating faster? use an compressed air spray to get the dust removed?

I have a Satellite C660 laptop. The keys are driving me crazy! They keep sticking, and miss letters I have pressed.
As a touch typist this is very frustrating.

I'm not very PC litterate - so if someone can give me a simple solution I'd really appreciate it.

Answer:Satellite C660 - keyboard issue - missing letters while typing

You know what?
I think I?ve found a solution to your issue?

Last week, I bought my first laptop - a C660.
A few days after I bought it, I noticed that it was typing doubles of characters or missing characters out completely.
Now, it might just be that I'm adjusting to the keyboard, but I was wondering if there's been any problems with the keyboards?

Answer:Satellite C660: keyboard issue - doubles or missing characters

maybe, there is a keyboard hardware defect. Do you run Os with factory settings? otherwise, contact the service center. they will fix it for free.

I bought this laptop 5 weeks ago and now have issues with right click on mouse does not work. Sometimes left click brings up left click functions and leaves me unable to close programmes or shut down, double clicking in pad or enter does not work also.

I have tried to do a system restore to factory but I cannot click on the next to take me throught the restore and end up having to shut down via main power switch.

Any ideas please?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Mouse click doesn't work

Do you have the same problems with an external mouse or just the touchpad?

If an external mouse works properly you can use this one to make a recovery installation. This can help you to solve the problem if it?s just software based.

Last but not least did you already try updating the touchpad driver? You can find it on official Toshiba website: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

Check this!!!

I have a SATELLITE C660-26Z after formatting and reinstalling a new version of windows my function keys are not working.

However they work until I log in and then they do not work on any account I may have accidentally turned they off if so is it possible to turn them back on? FN and keys 1-4 work but Fn keys Esc all the way to F9 do not work any ideas?

thank you

p.s. i have Toshiba Value Added Package

Answer:Re: satellite C660-26Z: FN buttons don't work after Win7 installation

You need to install VAP and Flash Card Support Utility.
The Flash Cards Utility controls the FN buttons.

Install this and test again

I have a strange problem with the using of the function buttons. When I turn on the laptop all the functions work well. However, after 30 seconds of standing on the desktop, they stop. The only fuction buttons that work after that are for the volume (up and down). The brightness, the muting button, they all stop working.

I have no idea what is the reason for that and I'll be grateful to have your help.

MODEL NAME: Toshiba Satellite C660-1MU
PART NUM: PSC1SE-00600283
OS: Windows 8.1

Answer:Satellite C660 - Function buttons don't work properly

As far as I know function keys are controlled by Toshiba system driver and Toshiba function key utility and they must be active in the background (start-up).
I have checked Toshiba download page and, as I can see, your notebook is not even supported for Win8.1. Which drivers have you installed?

Anyway, you can try to reinstall them.

I did a clean install Windows 7 and installed all the drivers from the Toshiba site but my function keys are not working.

Any idea how I can make them work?

Answer:Satellite C660 - What driver for brightness keys to work?

As you can read in many other threads the FN keys require Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility. Both tools can be downloaded on official Toshiba website: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

Install Value Added Package at first, then Flash Cards Support Utility. After installation of both tools the FN keys will work as usual. :)

I'm using a Satellite C660 32-bit laptop.
After uninstalling and deleting a lot of unnecessary programs to free up disk space i found out that my touch pad don't function correctly anymore.

It don't wanna scroll up and down, left and right anymore.
So i don't know if i deleted this program by mistake. Cannot do a system restore either because that's also been deleted.

Please help...

Answer:Satellite C660 - Synaptics pointing device does not work

I assume that you haven't disabled the device or damaged the installation of Windows - the mouse is as fundamental as the keyboard and would need some clever deleting to "remove" it.

Have you checked the status of the touch pad in Device Manager?
Have you got a small button near the touch pad that disables it?
If just the driver is missing then you have 3 options

1. Click "Support my product" near the top of this page and follow/complete the pages to find the Toshiba touch pad driver

2. Go to synaptec's site and download the driver

3 Go to, a synaptic site and download the driver - more features than either 1 or 2

For some reason my cd/dvd burner will not write to blank discs. It was working fine recently but now appears to have stopped. I have tried writing both data and normal cd via Windows Media player, Nero essentials 9 (whch was pre loaded on the pc) and through a free burning software call Burnaware. Which ever I use goes through the brun procedure , verifies and finalises the disc and the ejects saying burn was successful, but when i relload the disc it shows as empty.

Any help would be gratfully received.

tsstcorp cddvdw ts l633c is the cd/dvd on the machine. I have uninstalled and re installed but it has had no effect. it plays discs fine.

Have you tried to use empty media from different manufacturers (high quality product like TDK or Verbatim)?

my wireless button won't work.I have windows 8.1 installed,
i have vap and flash cards installed and still not working.

Any suggestion?

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-1CL - Wireless button don't work running Win 8.1

As far as I know Satellite C660 does not support Win 8.1
This means that Toshiba tools and drivers are not released for Win 8.1.
I think you can use Win 8.1 but you have to know that there is no warranty that you could use all special notebook features.

>i have vap and flash cards installed and still not working.
I doubt this is correct since VAP don?t exists for Win 8.1
Toshiba System Driver is the successor of VAP in case you are using Win 8.1

However, try to install the Toshiba System Driver and Toshiba Function Key Utility for Win 8.1
You could download such software which was released for other series like Sat C870 for example.

This is my second attempt to recovery using the hidden image. The first attempt hung at an earlier point Loading Windows 7 ;( However on this attempt it has been over an hour on the "Setup is starting services" screen with a moving light under it.

Does anyone have any reasonable idea how much time this process takes? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-1F1 Toshiba HDD Recovery "Setup is starting services" hang?

Powered off after 2 hours.

Seems that it could be BIOS version currently 1.2 needs upgrade to a more recent version so I'll have a look at that. Also possible issue with bootrec maybe.

I'll update later :)

I spend some hours to try to create the recovery disks for my Laptop (Satellite C660-1DG)

It fails on the second DVD halfway. It just hangs. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work anymore a cold boot is required to start the thing again.

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

I burned just another disk and it was full of validation errors: hundreds.

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

I have a new Toshiba Sattellite C660-1WT
Product code PSC1LE-01Y01ERU
With Core i3-2310M processor
With preinstalled Windows 7 Home Basic SP1 operation system
BIOS ver 1.00 13/18/2001 (based on Toshiba HWSetup)

Cooling fan runs on high speed, with very loud noise.
I have tried to change "Toshiba Power Saver Settings V8.9.4.64" to "Battery optimized" in "Advanced power settings" but this didn't helps.
This option work only in one way - to increase fan speed, but never to decrease.
When I turn this option to "Maximum performance" and then back to "Battery optimized" fan is going to low speed, but only for first hight CPU load operation then fan begin runs on high speed and never switch to low.

Can you help me to reduce fan noise when cpu is idle automatically?

Message was edited by: KirillN

Answer:Re: Satellite C660 - Fan speed controller didn't work properly.

I have tested and defined fan speed settings on several Toshiba notebooks (belong to my friends) and it always work. With other words the fan speed was always reduced.

I recommend you to use ?Balanced power option? for usual work. Enter additional options for balanced power plan and set ?Cling method? to battery optimized. After doing this fan speed should be reduced and work with notebook much pleasant than before.
