Satellite C660 keyboard typing issue

Question: Satellite C660 keyboard typing issue

I have been using a foldable keyboard and a remote keyboard and have been having problems:

1.Characters not showing when typed.
2.Cursor jumping from typing position to another place usually outside the box that I am typing in.
3.Characters repeating while typing.
4.Actions ie Backspace not operating.

These problems do not seem to happen in Gmail and are not happening as I type this.
The problems have occurred so far in Google Calendar,a text doco and login to a site.
The problem did occur with the on board keyboard once so I am wondering if it is a malfunction or a virus.

Any ideas ?.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Satellite C660 laptop. The keys are driving me crazy! They keep sticking, and miss letters I have pressed.
As a touch typist this is very frustrating.

I'm not very PC litterate - so if someone can give me a simple solution I'd really appreciate it.

I am having an issue with the keyboard on my Satellite c660 laptop, part number: PSC1LE.
The best way I can describe it is as a stuttering problem because it comes and go's (fine for a few hours, then not for a short while).

The problem is that for reasons unknown to me I keep encountering a problem where the A, N and Enter keys do not work when pressed. Occasionally pressing the key repeatedly (they aren't jammed) just makes the letter come out, but I can't keep pressing the key five or six times to get one letter. Just to mention, I have not spilled anything on the keyboard.

I have done full anti-virus and spyware scans but have found no issues.
I have this evening done all of the windows updates available to me, however it doesn't seem to have done the trick.

After restarting the device following the updates all worked well for about 15 minutes, until the same three keys stopped working again. On this occasion it lasted only for a couple of minutes, and now I am writing this with the same keyboard.

Note: I am not using the original keyboard. I changed the board due to minor material damage but had it done privately.
However this was done the better part of a year ago and has worked perfectly since being installed, until this new issue occurred in the last few weeks.

If anyone has any further recommendations or suggestions as to what may be the cause or any solutions then please share them.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard issue

I think you would understand that nobody is able to say why your keyboard malfunctions.
Only if the notebook hardware has been checked/scanned, it would be possible to say what?s wrong here?
But generally speaking there is a good workaround to diagnose the problem.

You could connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook and could check if the same problems with the mentioned buttons will occur.

In case the external USB keyboard would work properly, I think that your internal keyboard is the troublemaker? in such case you would need to replace the keyboard once again.

Last week, I bought my first laptop - a C660.
A few days after I bought it, I noticed that it was typing doubles of characters or missing characters out completely.
Now, it might just be that I'm adjusting to the keyboard, but I was wondering if there's been any problems with the keyboards?

Answer:Satellite C660: keyboard issue - doubles or missing characters

maybe, there is a keyboard hardware defect. Do you run Os with factory settings? otherwise, contact the service center. they will fix it for free.

I own a Lenovo 3000 y410  and as my title indicates it is constantly typing q even without  touching the keyboard. This doesn't seem like it is a physical problem because i was able to take the key totally off ( so that there was nothing on the sensor), and clean this area with compressed air. Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

I've been the owner of a Toshiba Satellite C660 for approximately five days, and I'm already experiencing severe keyboard lag. Like users of the L270 model, and other posters on this forum, the keyboard has dramatically slowed down and letters are being omitted, slowing down the typing process.

I've tried to update my BIOS, as numerous posters have suggested, but my BIOS is bang up to date.

I haven't tried removing the battery or anything like that. Frankly if I have to do that to get my keyboard working properly the computer is going straight back and I'm demanding a refund.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Several keyboard lag

I never saw any L270 users here... As far as I know there is no such a notebook model?

Anyway, that?s really strange and I never heard about such a problem on Satellite C660. In my opinion everything what you can do is updating the BIOS and using preinstalled Windows version. If you can still notice the same behavior, ask the seller for a replacement model.

I agree with new: This shouldn?t happen on a five day old notebook.

Good day!

my concern is about my Toshiba laptop I bought it 2 months ago in Europe when I reach in Philippines my son keep on playing it suddenly it was turn off and it didn't open anymore.

I go immediately to Toshiba centre at Cagayan de oro city and I found out that it was the keyboard problem but they could not replace it because there are no available keyboards suited for that laptop. How can I fix it?

Answer:Need new keyboard for Satellite C660-1DG

At first I must say that biggest problem for you is that warranty cannot cover keyboard replacement and you must pay keyboard exchange alone. Notebooks from EMEA (Europe ? Middle East ? Nord Africa) countries have EMEA warranty only so warranty is, unfortunately, not valid.

To be honest I don?t understand why the keyboard must be exchanged if the notebook doesn't start properly.

Anyway, this notebook model has keyboard used on many models so to find new one should not be problem. Best way to order new keyboard is eBay. In last 3 years I?ve ordered several keyboards over eBay. You will not believe me but all of them I ordered from China.

Toshiba Satellite Pro C660

Since we bought this laptop in November '10 it has had an intermittent problem with typing. Occasionnally the keyboard will either miss out characters typed or double type them. It can happily do this all day and then stop and go back to normal.
We have restored this back to factory settings and it still does it intermittently. Our IT man insists this is a software problem but has been unable to find out what it is.

Bizaarly we bought two of these laptops at the same time and they both have the same fault.

My keyboard stopped working and after trying different things I read in other forums I went ahead and replaced it. New keyboard was working perfectly until now that it all came back but slightly different...

Original keyboard wouldn't let me type any numbers and letters, v,b,n,f,g,h,r,t,y, were dead, plus the whole row of F1 to F10. The new keyboard was working perfectly but now mouse pad doesn't work and I get extra letters when I type "R" I get r5y78 instead...""vm" rather than m, and fh rather than h...

I'm not sure whether it's a motherboard issue but it's very strange that usb keyboard and mouse work fine however new keyboard worked great for about a week and now I'm using USB keyboard again...

Any suggestions?

Laptop model: Toshiba Satellite c660
OS: Win 7

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite C660 keyboard not working

If external USB keyboard works correctly, the keyboard controller should be OK. So I don't think its motherbaord problem.
I guess the new keyboard is faulty too and you will need to get another try and will need to replace the keyboard once again.

Got a Toshiba Sat Pro C660-1UX with a crazy keyboard.

Have updated the BIOS, no change. Plug in a USB keyboard, that all works Ok.

Will a new keyboard fix things ?

My daughter has purchased a new laptop - 30 days ago - the keys seem to be playing up.
In particular the arrow keys will not function at all ( the arrows on the number pad are OK though)

The question mark and forward slash key plus the last letter of the alphabet - cannot type the letter!
None of these will function with or without the shift keys.
I have updated the driver - nothing has been spilt on the keyboard.

Is this just a key combination issue or should I return the laptop to supplier.

Answer:Keyboard fault on Satellite Pro C660-187

> The question mark and forward slash key plus the last letter of the alphabet - cannot type the letter!

Does this function pressing other keys; for example Y is Z and Z is Y or @ is ? and so on?
Possibly the keyboard layout does not match the right language.

Check this Microsoft page how to change this:

Otherwise if this will not help you, then I would say its hardware related issue so in such case the keyboard should be replaced by ASP!

Recently I bought a Satellite C660, but now I would like to know if it's possible to replace the standard keyboard with an illuminated one. Will an illuminated keyboard not work because it needs some kind of a power cable for leds ? Does Toshiba sell such component individually ?

Answer:Illuminated keyboard on Satellite C660

Such upgrade is not possible.
Illuminated keyboard needs power supply and it must be connected on small port placed on the mainboard. So if your mainboard doesn?t have it there is no chance to use illuminated keyboard.

Hi everyone,

I recently updated the BIOS to version 1.60 on my C660 PSC0LE-02300JEN (1 year old) and the keyboard is not working properly at all and at times stops working completely, rendering it not usable (I'm writing this on an external USB keyboard.).

There was a recurring problem a few months before I updated the BIOS with the keystroke being delayed or unresponsive sometimes when typing but in the main it still worked.

So I updated the BIOS, as suggested, and I am getting the following serious problems:

The spacebar is either unresponsive or when pressed writes +2 or +++++++++++++++++++++++ over and over until I stop it by pressing the spacebar again.

None of the numbers work.

At times the whole keyboard stops working and none of the keys elicit a response.

Solutions I've tried:

Taking out the battery.

cleaning the keyboard to get anything dislodged from out underneath the keys.

Reinstalling the 1.60 version of the BIOS.

I'm unsure what to do next and would really appreciate advice and help before I attempt to get the keyboard replaced. It would be great to get an opinion before I payout for a fix.

Replies really welcome.

Many thanks

Answer:Satellite C660 - keyboard is not working

I think this keyboard issue is not related to BIOS update not to other installed software.
Fact is that you can use the external USB keyboard as you said above? this means that the BIOS is ok and also the keyboard controller functions properly?

This means that the issue is related to internal keyboard malfunction. I have no explanation why this happened after the update but it could be simple a bad luck?

In my opinion, the issue can be solved by keyboard replacement.

This question relates to a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-1UX Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Some of the onboard keys (E, T, U, I, O, A, B, N, together with the Enter key) fail to register.
All of the other keys tested so far appear to register normally.

When connecting an external USB keyboard, all keys function properly. However, when using either the onboard keyboard or the external USB keyboard, it is necessary to hold down whatever key is selected for approx 2-3 seconds in order for its character to register. This makes typing incredibly slow and is understandably unacceptable.

I've checked device manager looking for errors, but am unable to find any. The driver for the keyboard is listed as installed and working properly, and driver update says that the latest version is in already in use.

I have also scanned for viruses using Malware Bytes and Spybot, and also with the laptops own pre-installed antivirus software. All of the full system scans return a no threat found message.

I have read that the keyboards on these machines can sometime be problematic, which could answer why only certain onboard keys function. The fact that all keys on the external USB keyboard work would seem to confirm this. However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this probl... Hi everyone

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-2JD.

The keyboard has stopped working it only works when the on screen keyboard is selected as soon as I close the on screen keyboard it stops working. I have plugged in another keyboard that won`t work either only the mouse works and the keypad on the laptop works ok. I have used the Ubuntu live CD and the keyboard works with it but not in windows.

I have restored the laptop to factory settings and also done a clean install still does not work only when the on screen keyboard the keyboard works. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem is? It seems something is preventing the keyboard driver from loading up.

Have you tested it using \Windows in “safe mode” (F8)?

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

Answer:After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

Satellite C660-28H

Win7 64bit

antivirus Kaskpersky deleted "system32/driver/cekbfilter.sys" file for keylogger reason (Kaspersky Support said It is mistake of Kaspersky antivirus, file is not virus or virused), and after I restart OS I find keyboard and touchpad not working at all.

Also I already asked about this at [US Toshiba Forum|] and there was advise to ask here too

I can not use Windows recovery (do not have recovery point) , and I do not want to do full recovery to factory default - there are many soft and personal data stored.

So Is here way to recover drivers? As I already said at US Toshiba Forum - I already tryed delete touch pad driver and instal from Synaptic official website, and I not changed anything.

Also I think antivirus may delete not only file, but do some fixes to remove "wrone" driver

Answer:Re: Satellite C660 - keyboard and touchpad are not working

Huh it is very stupid situation now. I never had such problems but it will be interesting to find solution to this.

Have you tried to connect external mouse, just to see if this can work? I mean it is much easier to use windows with mouse and choose different options.

If this works try to open device manager and properties for keyboard. There you can find option for driver update. Check if some driver update can be found. Fact is that keyboard uses standard Microsoft driver so f you are online maybe some driver can be found.

Of course best and easiest solution for you is recovery installation. If you don?t want to do this try to find right drivers using such driver update option.

One more thing: if you have so important stuff saved on HDD you can remove it from your notebook and connect it to other PC/notebook as external device and make backup. After doing this you can install recovery image and problem is solved.

In an attempt to get the FN key working again, I installed the latest 'Flash Cards Support Utility', which has made the problem considerably worse. No keys on the keyboard work (there is still power going to it, as the number lock light is lit) and the touchpad doesn't respond either, along with its buttons.

I'm guessing it was something to do with what i just installed but i don't really know where to start. I have a usb mouse and a spare keyboard so am able to use the laptop but would be very grateful for any help fixing it.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard and Touchpad failing

Before we start the discussion one question: do you have problem with FN keys only or you cannot use whole keyboard?
What is with touchpad? Is touchpad maybe disabled? Have you installed Synaptics touchpad driver?
It is really not easy to say what is going on there but maybe you should install recovery image and test functionality with ?factory settings?. I mean with clean OS installation everything should be OK. If not there must be some hardware problem.

I am the owner of an Toshiba Satellite C660-PSC1GE and my laptop suffers from the known keyboard problem (keys working twice or not working at all).

I already updated my BIOS to the newest version 1.90 which according to Toshiba should have solved the problem. A reboot later the problem is persisting though.
Any suggestions? I really need the laptop to work right now and would really like to avoid to bring it to a shop.

Answer:Persistent keyboard problem on Satellite C660

Indeed the keyboard issue should be solved by BIOS update as mentioned here:

You could also try to press "Fn" key then "N" key then "1" in order to check if the keystroke issue still appears?
But of course it could be possible that the mentioned issue is not the same and possibly its related to keyboard malfunction?
In such case the keyboard should be replaced in order to check if this could help.

By the way: does the external USB keyboard work properly?
It the USB keyboard work properly, then this issue is NOT related to BIOS but possibly to internal keyboard malfunction.

As far as I know you cannot repair single buttons. What you can do is to remove keyboard cap and eventually clean the small plastic mechanism placed under the cap.
Later you can place key cap in the right position and press it down gently. When you hear ?click? the cap should be in place again.

If you try to do this be careful and gently.

I?m wondering about your statement about external USB mouse and keyboard.
I thought that your problem was related to faulty touchpad module and internal keyboard but now I?m thinking that this cannot be the case since the external USB keyboard does not work as well as the external USB mouse.

Probably its more serious hardware malfunction: maybe something related to the motherboard??? Who knows? an hardware diagnostic test needs to be done to confirm this?

Just one question: are you able to access the BIOS? I mean does the F2 keyboard button work in order to access the BIOS?

Hey guys,

In the last few months my laptop had become almost unusuable.

It started off with the odd key stopping working or getting hard to use but now it's happened to a lot of them and last night my touch pad stopped working all together.

I'm not really a tech head and am struggling with this.

I have a Toshiba satellite C660 28T.

Any help would be great thanks.
Maybe even a factory reset?

I wouldn't even know how to do this.

Answer:Satellite C660-28T - Keyboard and touch pad problems

Regarding the keyboard issue:

From my point of few the described keyboard problem sounds like a hardware related malfunction… probably in order to fix it, the internal keyboard should be replaced… just to ensure that your internal keyboard is affected, please attach the external USB keyboard and check whether it would work properly.
If you will not notice any issues, the problem is caused definitely by internal keyboard malfunction and as mentioned before, you would need to replace the keyboard.

Regarding the touchpad:

I’m not quite sure if both issues are related to each other but touchpad can be disabled using the function keys… I recommend you to check this… (function key details can be found also in user manual)… you can also try to reinstall the touchpad drive.

Additional tip: this forum contains many threads about similar issues… therefore I would recommend you to read the recommendations posted in this community.

Hi all

I am completely stumped as my keyboard has gone haywire and am quite annoyed i cant fix it

Am running windows 7 on toshiba satellite pro laptop and was wondering if its a software or perhaps hardware issue.

Here is what is happening:

- Caps lock light doesnt stay on anymore but it flashes when i press it. It does still work properly though
- Left SHIFT key still works but when i press also creates this symbol ~ at the same time within UK keyboard. If i change to US keyboard then it enters the PIPE symbol.
- The ~ key above the tab key actually does this ?
- And the pipe key which is above the Enter key types this: #7

I updated the BIOS earlier today but to no avail...

Does anyone have any idea on how i can sort this as its quite frustrating! Thanks for any ideas.

Answer:Keyboard button problem on Satellite Pro C660

>Am running windows 7 on toshiba satellite pro laptop and was wondering if its a software or perhaps hardware issue.

Keyboard is controlled by an Microsoft driver which is part of the Window system.
So the story is quite simple? either your internal keyboard is faulty or the keyboard controller on the motherboard does not work.

How to find out what part is affected?
This is also quite a simple procedure? you need to connect an external USB keyboard.
If you notice the same problems using external keyboard, the problem is related to keyboard controller. If you don?t notice any problems using the USB keyboard, the internal notebook keyboard malfunctions? in such case it needs to be replaced.

Hey all,

I have a Toshiba C660 PSC0QE, and recently some of the letters have stopped working. Well I think it happened when my 1year old smacked the keyboard! :[email protected]
Its just random keys but the following are not working;
e, t, u, i, o, z, x, c, v, m, space bar, shift, back space, ctrl, 2,4,8,9 and prob some other keys.

Is this a common fault on these models?
Could a bios update fix this? - how do you perform this?
Or do i need a new keyboard ?

I've been having the same trouble and after trying a few things I eventually tried upgrading the BIOS which has totally knackered my laptop (same model as yours), now it won't even switch on!

The keyboard on my Satellite C660-108 is very slow in response. Some characters are not displayed at all, some only after a short delay. This is very inconvenient when typing text and passwords (!) because I have to double check everything I type (and 1 out of 3 words has spelling errors, due to the keyboard issue)

Is there a way I can troubleshoot what's wrong?

Answer:Satellite C660-108 - Slow keyboard response

Hi buddy,

As you can read in many other threads you have to update the BIOS to get rid of this problem.

Toshiba has already released an article about what you should do:

Hi there

I'm completely stuck I have a c660 satellite laptop the keyboard wasn't working.
So I bought a replacement keyboard and installed it and checked in the device manager and it says it's there and is working correctly but the replacement keyboard is still not working.

I have updated bios and uninstalled keyboard drivers and reinstalled them I have done everything I can think off to get try and get this new keyboard working but I am having no luck and could so with some help.

Answer:Satellite C660 - new internal keyboard does not work

Did you ever check if the external USN keyboard works properly?

I?m asking because in case the external keyboard would not work properly, the internal keyboard problem could be related to faulty keyboard controller (motherboard) or system problem.

In case the external keyboard would work properly, you simply had bad luck with the new keyboard. It could be possible that the new keyboard malfunctions.

Anyone know how to change keyboard sensitivity? Having real issues when typing of laptop missing letters.!
Very annoying!!

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-167: Anyone know how to change keyboard sensitivity?

I think this issue could be solved by BIOS update.
Please take a look on Toshiba European driver page and download the latest BIOS.

I read here in the forum about the similar issue with another notebook series and BIOS update did the job.

Good luck

Did you notice the same keyboard problem using an external USB keyboard?

Please check this because very often such issues were caused by internal keyboard malfunction.

Hey Guys,

I've been having an on and off issue with my touchpad for at least a couple of months now. I've tried doing the function +F9 thing with little effect. I also re-downloaded the synaptics driver which seems to make it work for a little while but then it started working only sporadically.

Currently my touchpad works some of the time, if it fails at first pressing Ctrl Alt Del and then Esc seems to make it work for a little while longer but after that it simply stops working. I'm a student and not having a fully functioning laptop is often a great hindrance so any help would be great.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660 - on and off issue with the Touchpad

My first question is: when did you notice this touchpad issue.

I mean, the Sat Pro C660 is an older notebook and if this issue did not appear from first day of purchase, then something has affected the touchpad functionality in the past.

The question is: is there something wrong with software or maybe touchpad module.
I think this can be answered only settings the notebook back to factory state.
If you recover the notebook using Toshiba recover disk, you will get exactly the same state like at the first day of purchase.

If touchpad would still not work properly, well then there is some hardware problem

i have this notebook just about 2 months, so the solution of this problem cant be that my notebook is old and inside is dust..
if am i just surfing on internet, temperature of notebook is about 40-60 degress, but if am i gaming it goes quickly up (65-75)
- maybe after 2 hours gaming temperature goes up and i must quit game.
If temperature is about 75 degress, computer started to be noisy and i think it goes down..

What i have to do?

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-11W - overheating issue

After reading your posting I don?t know what the problem is. The temperature you mentioned in your posting is not on critical level so I think there is no reason for panic.

When you want to play the game, close all useless applications, switch to high performance power plan and be sure notebook is placed properly on the desk. Cooling fans should not be blocked and notebook must be able to ?take a breath?.

Until there is no ?unexpected switch off? there is no reason for panic.

Hi there,

I have purchased a Satellite C660-17J and occasionally when I turn it on (holding the power button for 2 or three seconds and then releasing) - it doesn't seem to power on properly eg - fan starts - power light comes on - but not screen. If I hold the power button again it goes off. Then if I try again it will come on but the date and time resets itself to 2008.

Any ideas or will I have to send it back to Amazon as faulty? (could do without doing that!).

Answer:Satellite C660-17J - Power on issue

Hi ebarnyard,

When you connect an external screen, can you see something on it or is it still black as internal screen?

> Then if I try again it will come on but the date and time resets itself to 2008.
Do you mean the time of Windows or BIOS?

Generally speaking I must say this is no normal behavior and in my opinion it?s something wrong with hardware itself. So I would contact an authorized service provider in your country and ask the guys to check your notebook what?s wrong with it because hardware repair is for free due warranty time ;)

Hi I have just recently been provided a Satellite C660 for my further education, though I do believe in my haste to get it set up how I like to set up my computers I might of turned off the hot-keys now reading about on this forum I have found that to make them work again I will need to allow TOSHIBA Button Support to run at start up, but no matter how hard i try to find it on msconfig it no longer seems to be there, any one have any ideas about where I could find it on the C drive?

Though one of the strangest things I have noticed about this problem is that the volume hot-keys still work perfectly its just the rest of them.

Just to let other people out there know I think I have solved my problem, here is the process I used to fix the hot-key issue.

Start menu - -> write msconfig in the search box on vista or windows 7 (if using XP type it into the run box) --> go to start up --> look for KeNotify Application and select it to run at start up.

There you have it it seemed to fix my issue so I hope it helps you out.

Hi all!

I have Toshiba Satellite C660-1GK for about year and a half. After 6 months my hard disk drive died.

First the laptop got really slow and then started the famous clicking sound from the disk.
I've made backup and checked the drive with Hirens tools. Toshiba diag won't even read it, S.M.A.R.T. said that his health is poor (30% or so), bad sectors started popping out.. so I've took the laptop to my ASP.

They replaced the disk and then, 13 months later (a week ago) the same story! Disk health went even lower (was at 11%) and bad sectors started jumping out like maniacs.
Again a trip to ASP.

I've got my laptop today with a new disk. After reading posts on this forum, I'm worried that it's or motherboard/power supply problem or we're just all with bad luck with drives.

I just can't accept that disks randomly die every 4-12 months as an answer. My last disk on HP laptop lasted 4 years! I have about five more months of warranty and I'm really not happy with situation. This laptop is on my work desk, has it's own station with a nice, big fan so it's not overheating - basically I've took it out of house last September.

I'm careful with it! But if this drive dies before end of year, maybe it's time to get a new laptop.
Not Toshiba this time :(

Please, do you have any thoughts, advices..?

Answer:Satellite C660-1GK - HDD partition C issue

Some years ago i purchased an notebook from another manufacturer.
My first HDD died after more than 2 years of usage. I bought another one, replaced the old HDD and the new HDD died after 4 month of usage.

Any HDD will die sooner or later because its expendable part? it?s a matter of HDD usage and matter of how you handle the unit.

In my opinion it?s a bad luck? of course its always pity if an HDD start to malfunction but I?m afraid there are no many options to prevent it.
Of course you could switch to an SSD drive which is much stable in use. I did it some month ago? I purchased the 250GB SSD drive and replaced the internal HDD

When my wife got off the plane a baggage handler helped her by pushing her mother in the wheelchair and dragging one of the bags behind him allowing my wife to take care of the rest of the luggage. Unfortunately the laptop that was sitting on top of that bag decided that it didn't like the ride, it jumped off the bag and tried to enter the terminal under its own battery power.

There is no visible damage to the laptop as it was inside the laptop bag and no cracks or anything on the screen. When the laptop turns on, the screen can remain blank, flicker or it will display the log on and desktop but instead of showing white it displays a pinkish purple, only white is affected not off white. Other colours display correctly although they do look as if the display is set to 256 colour or using the wrong driver.

I connected an external monitor to it and that works fine with full colour. If the laptop screen flickers a light tap to the back of it will get it to stay on but the colour isn't corrected. I am thinking that it may be just a loose connection or broken wire between the screen and the motherboard but not sure if the change in colour would be caused by this.

Satellite C660 (PSC1LA-00J001) looks brand new but I don't think it would be worth taking in to get fixed.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

It took me 2 1/2 hours to post this exact same message because somewhere in there is profanity or inappropriate language. :(

Answer:Satellite C660 - screen issue

On this virtual way it is not possible to say for sure what is wrong there. Your notebook must be disassembled and all must be checked. Graphic card seems to be OK so there must be some problem with connectors, cable or with the display itself.
>Satellite C660 (PSC1LA-00J001) looks brand new but I don't think it would be worth taking in to get fixed.
Why not? Even display exchange is not so problematic. Googling around you will find many online stores where you can order new display, if necessary. Even on eBay you can get it for reasonable price.

If you don't have experience with this stuff I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider or some independent IT service and ask for help. Check which options are available and how much you must pay for repair.

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Answer:HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

>It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.
On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

i am having a kind of software glitch on my laptop. when i turned it on, it showed a message with options either to launch startup repair (recommended) or start windows normally. i chose the first option as that seem to be the recommended option and i thought this might repair if there was any damage. however, after the repair process was completed, it showed an error message with steps to install Windows. i am getting this message now everytime i turn my laptop on!

Since i have the software pre-isntalled on my laptop, i do not have the Windows 7 disc with me. this is really strange as i am unsure why this happened.

Although my laptop is covered with the warranty, i am not sure if it covers the software warranty too?

Please can some one advise me on the best way out of this problem.

> however, after the repair process was completed, it showed an error message with steps to install Windows. i am getting this message now everytime i turn my laptop on!

Looks like something has gone wrong with the installed OS.
Not sure why but it seems that you need to reinstall the windows once again.

> ince i have the software pre-isntalled on my laptop, i do not have the Windows 7 disc with me. this is really strange as i am unsure why this happened.

You did not receive any disks because the notebook supports the HDD recovery and additionally there was/is a option to create a own recover disk.
You could use the Recover disk creator software in order to create such disks?
But not sure if this would be possible now because of the error?

So would recommend starting the HDD recover as described here.

Answer:Satellite C660-1TK Windows start freezing after 55C and keyboard lags

Keyboard lag can be solved by BIOS update.
Update the BIOS to the latest state.
The BIOS can be downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page.

Furthermore you should clean the cooling fans.
Possibly the dust prevents the fans from rotating faster? use an compressed air spray to get the dust removed?

Dear all,

I have a strange problem with my keyboard for several weeks already. It performs strangely - lags all the time. In every program or Internet site (in the different Internet browsers) - characters (it doesn`t matter which one) would once appear and on the next time would simply not. Sometimes they just appear several times while I am typing. Sometimes simply nothing appears on the screen. Another test - pushing down one character for a long period of time would appear on the screen, but would stop for a fractions of the second and then would continue again visualizing on the screen. This is really annoying. You simply can not write. If I hold down a different character individully and slowly, I wouldn`t have any problems, but I can not write in this way.

That is why I decided to format my Windows OS today (XP PRO SP3) - no effect at all. No viruses. I tried from the WIndows services to turn them on and off one by one - no effect again.

After following these steps:

Workaround Procedure
1.Press then release the 'Fn' key
2.Press then release the 'N' key
3.Press then release the '1' key

Ever since I got this new PC with Win7 two weeks ago, I've had problems when typing text in applications, web forums, etc. I'll be merrily typing along and somehow a random combination of keys I hit causes some unintended action, such as the opening of a new window, switching focus to another open application, opening a different application, or activating some feature I don't want. Does Win7 and/or typical apps have tons of keyboard macros or shortcuts on by default, and how can I disable them?

All I'm doing is typing normal text, I swear I'm not hitting the Windows key or some combination of ALT_CTRL_X or anything like that. Maybe it's this crummy USB keyboard, is it possible that it interprets rapid keystrokes as the wrong thing?

Good day, fellow Toshiba notebook owners.

I have a little trouble upgrading my BIOS to a "newer" (according to Tempro) version.
I just installed the Tempro application, and it detected that my BIOS needs an upgrade, so I naturally downloaded the "new" BIOS. Everything went fine, but when I tried to install it, a message popped up in the install window:

"*The program will be closed!* There is an error occurred, please check below items. Bios version above 190. Battery capacity more than 10%. AC is attached."

No matter what I do, I get the same error, over and over again. I looked the problem up before I posted this thread, and other people encountered it, but, unlike my case, advices like "Close all background applications", "Charge your battery", or "Make sure the AC is attached" really helped them.

I tried closing everything, my battery is always fully charged, as I rarely disconnect the AC adapter, and, of course, the AC connection issue is not the cause, since it is almost always plugged in.

I checked my BIOS version in +msinfo32.exe+ and it is 1.90 already, but I remember upgrading it months ago (sooner than the release date of this last version), and if, hypothetically, I have the last version already installed, why doesn't Tempro acknowledge it and keeps alerting me over a non-existent issue?

Maybe there is something wrong with Tempro, but I just need to be sure before... Read more

Answer:Satellite C660 - 1C7: BIOS upgrade issue

Tempro notify you about new uploaded drivers or BIOS?
The Toshiba European driver page provides all the drivers and BIOS files and the latest BIOS version 1.90-win has been uploaded at 04.06.2012 and therefore you received this notification by Tempro software.

Who knows why they uploaded this file once again.. but fact is that your BIOS is up to date and therefore you cannot update the BIOS once again using the one and the same version.

Hi all

I was updating BIOS on TOSHIBA SATELLITE C660-13R from windows 7 64 bits. Downloaded driver from toshiba web. Half way the installation laptop freezes. I have left it for 40 mins to run but it did not get back to normal state. As motherboard fan has started to move on high speed I decided to take battery out. In result when I power back my laptop I have 1 beep from the motherboard and black screen.

Can some one help me please ?

Answer:Satellite C660-13R - BIOS update issue

Obviously the BIOS update procedure has failed. Something went wrong during the update process and it looks like the EMRPOM module has not been flashed properly.
This is the reason why the notebook does not work anymore.

Possible solution?
Well, if EMPROM isn?t damage, it should be possible to re-flash the BIOS module once again using special BIOS version and BIOS crisis disk.
Usually the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country should be able to re-flash the module using such crisis disk.

I read also in this forum that some people managed to re-flash the EPROM module using some 3rd party crisis disk found somewhere in the internet? but this did not work always?
So probably the ASP will be your last resort?

However, use the forums advanced search option to find related threads about the BIOS crisis disk? could be interesting for you

Last year I purchased a Satellite C660-1G3 laptop from UK; even today, I am using the factory settings, and running the originally installed Windows 7 OS. The following is the issue that I started facing yesterday onwards:
- Even when the battery is well-plugged and the laptop running, the Power Meter indicates a falling charge level, with the "Plugged in, Not Charging" notification. The orange LED keeps blinking

- However, when I completely shut-down the laptop, without touching anything (not even touching the adapter or the power cord), the orange LED indicating battery charging process stops blinking and becomes stable

- On re-starting the laptop, for about 1 minute or so, the battery appears to be charging (orange LED not blinking and "Plugged in, Charging" message). However, soon the orange LED again starts blinking and the nuisance message again comes up

A couple of things:
- the battery seems to be working fine and charging properly when laptop is shutdown (in fact, till a couple of days back, the battery used to show 2:30 hours of time available on 100% charged level)
- is there some issue with the Operating system? no idea on that

can experts help me in resolving this issue? I do not really want to approach the Service Center due to long distance involved.

- Biren

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-1G3 - "Plugged in, Not Charging" issue

Hi Biren

Not sure if I can help you but I would like to provide you some tips.

1) Check if your BIOS is up to date. If Toshiba European driver page provides newer version, then update the BIOS. Additionally set the BIOS to default pressing F9 and save changed pressing F10.
2) Try to calibrate the battery. To calibrate the battery you should discharge the battery completely and charge the battery again. Repeat this procedure 2-3 times in the row.
3) Remove the battery and AC adaptor and press power button (30 sec long) then connect both parts and check if the LED would start blinking again.

Finally I think that the notebook should be tested using new, good working battery. But if the issue would still persist, then I would assume that your motherboard might be affected.

Do you have Satellite L670?
I read about such issue here in the forum.
There is a temporal solution; update the BIOS.
Then the issues should be solved.
If it will come back, then you should disconnect AC adaptor and battery. Wait some time and connect both parts again.

Hope this helps a little bit.

2 things.
Firstly - altough i am a two finger typer - no matter which application i am in i seem to type faster than machine can cope with. I often end up not looking at screen and at keyboard, when i look back at screen the cursor has moved to earlier part of text - all messed up, really frustrating, really frustrating. Am i doing something wrong. Surely somebody has seen this before, i can't believe it's speed typing issues (thats 4 times its done it in typing this so far).
Also- does this laptop have an in built mic. I just assumed they all do, as i skype etc alot. Will i have to plug in a mic then. Hope i'm just blind and cannot see it somewhere.

Hello everyone, I am a new Lenovo user. I got my w530 thinkpad a few weeks ago.I have an annoying issue with my keyboard. Answer:W530 Keyboard typing issue

This is probably not your issue, but: I've disabled the touchpad in BIOS. I only use the TrackPoint, since I always accidentally touch the TouchPad with my hand when typing, which moves the mouse and sometimes even perform a click, activating the wrong window or moving the cursor to the wrong place. Otherwise, no. I have never ever seen anything like your issue no matter how fast I type.

I got a new z50-70 core i7 running win 8.1, 8gb ram, 15'' screen. Since I opened the box and turned it on for the first time, I keep getting this issue: sometimes, when I hit one key in the keyboard (normaly the "A", but it has happened to other keys, E, O, M...) it types it twice. For instance, hit the A, got AA. It is not something that happens all the time, but it happens a lot. I don't believe it is hardware related, or it wouldn't happen with every key. Also, it has nothing to do with the keyboard repeat config, as it kept happening even when I have disabled it. Since this happened the first time I opened it, I can't even return to a previous restore point. I was thinking this might be driver or virus issues. Does somebody have a clue on how to solve it?

I downloaded the software google sketchup 8, dedicated to the architecture drawing, but it doesnt work, I always have a bug message informing that it is necessary to update de drivers of the graphic card (According to google support it seems that OPENGL functions should be implemented in the drivers of my laptop)

So I have downloaded the last available drivers for the configuration I have ( Intel HD graphics for pentium, windows 7 64 bits) ;

the link ( french website, the one for Intel is not currently available, it is an .exe document)

I have tried to manually update de graphic card driver with the device manager menu (graphics card > update the drivers button> manual file.exe selection ), but at the end there is no update, I only have a very quick message informing that windows has determinated that the drivers are already updated.

Actually there is no changes on the drivers (still the same date of the pilotes 28/07/2010 in the graphics card properties) and sketchup is still out of work

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660 - Intel HD Graphics update issue

What C660-xxx do you have exactly?

If you have an Intel graphic card, you should download the driver directly from the Intel website.
There you should find the latest driver version

New to this forum so dont know if this problem has been covered.

Have installed Photoshop elements 11 and premier elements 11.
The elements program runs ok but cannot get get premier elements to open new project. Adobe advised trying to update drivers which I have tried without success.

When running driver update on laptop it says latest driver installed.
On checking Toshiba update site it shows later version
Have downloaded this ,I then unzipped it and it says will start automatic installation when finished but nothing happens.

Have tried several times but once unzipped it will not install.

Any help would be appreciated and infact confirmation of latest driver.

We have an L450D-119 running Windows 7 64bit.

Occasionally, the keyboard simply stops typing. There is no explanation and no repeatable event. It does not seem to be after any repeatable activity like suspend or hibernate, it just seems to happen. A reboot cures the problem.

It is worth noting that when the keyboard has stopped accepting characters the mouse pad and buttons still work.

This is my second L450D-119, the first was returned with 24 hours for the same reason.

It seems this one has always done it to some extent and the user, not me I might add, has simply seen it as an annoyance and rebooting - clearly this is unacceptable.

My choices are fix it or take it back. So by posting on this forum I am hoping to find a resolution but if nothing is forth coming I shall be forced to take it back and this time it will be for a refund and not exchange.

Thank you for your help and any suggestions

Answer:Satellite L450D-119 - Keyboard just stops typing

Have you installed any keyboard/mouse drivers? (for an external Logitech mouse for example)
Maybe there is a 3rd party driver installed that is conflicting.

Also check the Sticky Keys settings. If you hold down some keys, Sticky Keys may activate. Untick "Turn on Sticky Keys"
Win7: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use

A BIOS Update may also help. You can download the latest BIOS from the Toshiba Website.

I am using Toshiba L730 Satellite Pro with part number PSK09L - 009005.

While typing on keyboard, the cursor jumps to random locations and its hard to complete at least a sentance without errors.

I tried searching for Keyboard Drivers but I don't get to see the Part Number PSK09L - 009005 to choose right BIOS or Keyboard Drivers.

Please advise.

Answer:Satellite C50-A-1DV - keyboard typing multiple letters

Connect the external USB keyboard and check if the same ?double letters? issue would appear using such external USB keyboard.

If the double letters symptoms will not appear using external keyboard, then the internal notebook keyboard must be faulty.

This would mean that the internal keyboard must be replaced to fix the issue.
But if the double letter will appear even using the external keyboard, then the keyboard controller (part of the motherboard) could be affected.

Not quite sure if this could be fixed by BIOS update but in case your BIOS is not up to date, try to update the BIOS.

Otherwise I would recommend you to contact Toshiba authorized service provider for an check.

Hey, everyone. I'm having some issues.

A while ago I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and found out that I could no longer change the screen brightness. This was my only issue with the upgrade. So, I suffered through, later caught a virus through a bad download, and did a complete system restore, ridding myself of everything and restored my laptop back to Vista. I recently--just a few hours ago--upgraded again to Windows 7, updated my BIOS, and thought everything was peachy--my brightness was fixed!

However, other things have taken revenge on me. The number keys (not the 'number pad') 1-0 do not work at all--only 7-0 if the number lock function is activated. I've triple-checked and restored my keyboard options to US standard but nothing doing, as well as tested other regional keyboard settings, all with the same result. All of the other keys work except the numbers (and resulting symbols, !, @, #, etc).

I'm not sure but this may have something to do with it. As well as suffering through numerical madness, I've discovered that a driver I didn't realize I had, GuardedID, is not functioning properly, warning me with every few keystrokes:
"GuardedID keyboard driver is not responding. More detail on the error is available in the Event Viewer under Manage in the toolbar. GuardedID is now turned Off." Not only am I irritated with this message popping up every ten strokes but I'm becoming paranoid. There is no trace of GuardedID on my computer whatsoe... Read more

Reboot the unit and wait until Windows OS has reinstalled all USB controllers once again.

I recently bought an L750D-14R laptop and it has problems with the keyboard completely skipping letters when typing.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so is there a fix?

Yes, I know such issue.
As far as I know this has been fixed by BIOS update?

Wondering whether someone can help. I recently purchased a Satellite L500 and the keyboard is giving problems. Every day two or three times it starts typing giberrish - i.e I type L it will type another letter and so on - and it only fixes the problem by doing a reboot.

Any idea what may cause this problem or how it can be fixed? Its a brand new machine so I am surprised by the problem?

Many Thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite L500 - Keyboard starts typing Giberrish

Hi Partha,

> Its a brand new machine so I am surprised by the problem?
That makes no difference. Such problems or other ones can happen always even the notebook is few days old.

Regarding your problem: Have you checked the keyboard input language? I don?t know which native language you want to use but I would recommend removing all other languages.
Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Language > Details

In worst case if it would be a hardware issue, you should get a new keyboard for free from an authorized service provider due warranty.

My Satellite C55-B803 laptop keyboard has started typing double letters all of a sudden.

Pls do help ..

Does the same issue happen if you would use external USB keyboard?

If external USB keyboard would work properly, the double letters problem is related to the internal keyboard malfunction.
Then there is just one solution: keyboard replacement.

I recently purchased toshiba Satellite C660 M21G Laptop with windows 7 32 bit installed (not licensed) and I installed all the hardware drivers except the SM Bus Controller and the Nvidia GeForce graphic adapter driver, this because it does not exit on toshiba web site, or by other mean it exist but when I try to install either the Chipset utility or the display driver (VGA driver) an error message appear in both installation indicates that I didnt matched the minimum system software requirments for installing both the Dispaly adapter and the chipset.

I dont know why those requirments does not included in the error message ?

I have more that 12 hours trying to find a way out to install the dispaly driver because the standard VGA driver that windows 7 (32 bit) installed is very poor and i cant running any games or playing video smoothly
I am suffer and I need help

best regards

Answer:Satellite C660-M21G SM bus controller and display driver installation issue

From my knowledge the Satellite C660-M21G belongs to the PSC1SE series.
I?m wondering where did you find the right display driver for this series?
The notebook seems to support the NVIDIA GeForce 315M

I checked the Toshiba European driver page and not all Win 7 32bit drivers are released on the European driver page? I think you tried to install wrong or not compatible graphic card driver and therefore this error message appeared while installing the drivers.

But it seems that Win 7 64bit driver is available for this series therefore I would recommend testing the driver for Win 7 64bit.
The SM bus controller might be the Card reader and in such case you should install the Card Reader Controller driver from Realtek. There is also an Win 7 64bit driver version available on European driver page?

Test it simply?

Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.

Don't know if anyone can help me but I'm losing the will to live.

I never had the recovery disks so I've clean installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit twice in the space of 3 days because each time, Windows Update will not work. It simply sits on checking for updates and never finishes. I've tried EVERY solution going - ive reset windows update, done all the fix it programs supplied by microsoft to no avail.

As I said, this is a totally clean install, no anti virus, no 3rd party firewall, updates attempted via both ethernet and wifi. Am I missing a driver of some sort? There are no exclamation marks or warnings in device manager?!

It's doing my head in. What am i doing wrong?!

One observation, both installs have required me to activate via phone, it wouldn't work via the internet?! Is this related in any way?
Drivers installed:

Is there any that I'm missing that are important?

Go to the Toshiba US site and download the latest BIOS. Having the latest BIOS is important on new models.

For the Touchpad issue, download and install the latest Value Added Package for the P305D, and reinstall the Touchpad driver.
If you installed drivers for your USB Mouse (for example Logitech or Microsoft drivers), remove them. They may be conflicting with the Touchpad

Can someone please help,

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D for my nephew, We have forgotten the administrator password and we don't have password reset disk is there anyway around this.

Answer:I forgot my administrator password on Satellite C660/C660

I assume you are talking about windows system password and not about BIOS password. Right?
It?s not very big problem if you forgotten the System password but if you mean BIOS password then you are in trouble because the BIOS password can be deleted just by an Toshiba ASP technicians?

So I assume you mean Windows password? so start the notebook and press F8
Now you can choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.
This would start a HDD recovery procedure which would reinstall the system? during the setup you can set anther admin password.

Of course there are some other methods but as far as I know this requires 3rd party software/tools or Win 7 DVD? so I think the HDD recovery is the fastest solution.

Are you able to disable the CapsLock and NumLock?

If the USB keyboard would functions, then this means that the internal keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.

You have not wrong drivers but maybe the keyboard language settings have not been set correctly.

The settings can be changed in Regional & Language settings which can be found in Control panel.
There you have to choose second tab called language -> details

Then you should be able to choose the keyboard language or to add and second language to the settings.

I have had my T Sat L70-A computer for awhile with no problems.

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite L70-A

You could try to connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook in order to check if this keyboard button behavior will appear using external keyboard.
If the USB keyboard would work properly, then the problem is caused definitely by internal keyboard malfunction. In such case you would need to replace the keyboard.

Is you warranty valid? In case it is, the replacement could be replaced free of charge.

Hi there,

I have the Satellite L50-A model and whilst typing today, whenever I tap one of the letters on the /eyboard (from previous word it should be easy to figure out which letter it is!) it is substituted with / (forward slash).

My computer is only a couple of months old and is very well cared for (no food or liquids allowed near it!). I have heard of many people having an issue with letters being substituted by numbers, which I believe is a num loc/ issue. I have tried this, even restored computer to factory settings but still no luc/!

Hopefully someone may be able to help me out?
Than/s :)

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite L50-A

> have tried this, even restored computer to factory settings but still no luc/!
I?m sure this is a keyboard hardware problem and I guess everything would work properly using external USB keyboard. If you did not test this in the past, I would recommend you doing this just to confirm that the usage of external keyboard wouldn?t be a problem.

I assume there is no other solution for you as to replace the internal keyboard with a new one.
I assume the warranty is still valid because the L50-A is new on the market and therefore you should contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in order to get it fixed free of charge.

Addresses and phone numbers you can find on

Have you tried to use it with external keyboard?
