Satellite C660 - keyboard issue - missing letters while typing

Question: Satellite C660 - keyboard issue - missing letters while typing

I have a Satellite C660 laptop. The keys are driving me crazy! They keep sticking, and miss letters I have pressed.
As a touch typist this is very frustrating.

I'm not very PC litterate - so if someone can give me a simple solution I'd really appreciate it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using a foldable keyboard and a remote keyboard and have been having problems:

1.Characters not showing when typed.
2.Cursor jumping from typing position to another place usually outside the box that I am typing in.
3.Characters repeating while typing.
4.Actions ie Backspace not operating.

These problems do not seem to happen in Gmail and are not happening as I type this.
The problems have occurred so far in Google Calendar,a text doco and login to a site.
The problem did occur with the on board keyboard once so I am wondering if it is a malfunction or a virus.

Any ideas ?.

Last week, I bought my first laptop - a C660.
A few days after I bought it, I noticed that it was typing doubles of characters or missing characters out completely.
Now, it might just be that I'm adjusting to the keyboard, but I was wondering if there's been any problems with the keyboards?

Answer:Satellite C660: keyboard issue - doubles or missing characters

maybe, there is a keyboard hardware defect. Do you run Os with factory settings? otherwise, contact the service center. they will fix it for free.

OS: OS-independent (Tried multiple: OpenBSD, Linux, WinXP, Vista, Win7)

Other posters with same problem:

Key-presses drops out or gives wrong output. The problems occurs randomly, either right at boot or after <random> uptime. Looks like its a hardware related issue and not a OS issue. Problem occurs in multiple OS?s and even in the BIOS-meny. None of the solutions posted in this forum/other posts resolves the problem.

Removing battery is not a solution (as suggested in other posts), problem reoccurs after <random> uptime and sometimes even right at reboot. (And lets face it, a laptop without a battery is a _stationary_) =)

No! Its not a heat/overheating issue, problem can occur right at bootup after a complete powerdown with battery and power removed. (and no, its not a dust-problems or a issue of broken/fault cooling-fans/cooling)

Answer:Satellite C50-A-1DV - keyboard typing multiple letters

Connect the external USB keyboard and check if the same ?double letters? issue would appear using such external USB keyboard.

If the double letters symptoms will not appear using external keyboard, then the internal notebook keyboard must be faulty.

This would mean that the internal keyboard must be replaced to fix the issue.
But if the double letter will appear even using the external keyboard, then the keyboard controller (part of the motherboard) could be affected.

Not quite sure if this could be fixed by BIOS update but in case your BIOS is not up to date, try to update the BIOS.

Otherwise I would recommend you to contact Toshiba authorized service provider for an check.

I am using a Satellite M105-S3084 (Windows XP MCE) and have been unsuccessfully struggling with a keyboard problem since I first bought it. I tend to type fast, especially double letters and find that very often only one of the double letters shows up on screen. For instance "kk" would result in "k" only and similar missing letters even if not doubled. This causes a lot of wasted time correcting what I type.

I know that there are settings under Control Panel\Keyboard ("repeat delay" and "repeat rate") that permit setting speeds, but I have found them frustrating to use. I've tried both at various settings and still have a problem with missing letters. Maybe I just do not know which way to set which setting and I am just getting frustrated, or there is another setting somewhere else whic I do not know about.

Have others had this problem with mising letters while typing and found a solution?

Answer:Missing letters when typing on Satellite M105

Hello Jeff

If I am remembering well there was similar issue with Satellite L10 or L20, I can not remember. This was fixed with new BIOS version. US notebook models are not known to me but if you have time you can check Ask IRIS on US Toshiba page. There you can find many interesting documents.

Check it under

Maybe you will be lucky and find something about your issue with keyboard.

I recently bought an L750D-14R laptop and it has problems with the keyboard completely skipping letters when typing.

If I type any faster than the pace of 1 finger on each hand then I may as well give up typing altogether.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so is there a fix?

Yes, I know such issue.
As far as I know this has been fixed by BIOS update?

Check the Toshiba European driver page and download the latest BIOS for your notebook model.

Does the same issue happen if you would use external USB keyboard?

If external USB keyboard would work properly, the double letters problem is related to the internal keyboard malfunction.
Then there is just one solution: keyboard replacement.

Hi there!

I've found a lot of articles regarding my problem in the internet, but i didn't find a solution

My keyboard on my P300-22R ist not working anymore. If i write a little bit too fast, there are some letters missing or they are coming twice.

I have read already the by Toshiba, that I should install a BIOS-Update to solve the problem. The Bios-Update was successful, the notebook restartet properly. But it didn't seem to work so far. Still some letters are missing.

Do you have any other ideas? It's really annoying writing a text like this :-P

Do you need more information?

How to understand this? And in the past everything was OK?
Which operating system do you use?
When you type a bit slower is there any difference?

To be honest this issue on P300 is not known to me because I?ve installed on my brothers Win7 32bit about a year ago and until now everything work perfectly.

I bought Satellite P750-10F. It's is very annoying to write something, because of missing letters whie typing. Bios is upgraded, new drivers installed. I have to type very slow and push buttons very hard to write text without missing letters. I didn't even thought about playing games, chat, using communicators. This is horiible. I sent laptop to shop, they had to fix this (guarantee). They told me that there is no problem, and gave back laptop with broken keyboard (because i still think thats it is broken).

Is there some solution for this, or i have to go to court - shop doesn't want to replace this laptop for working one.

I hope someone might be able to help me.

I have had this laptop for nearly a year and slowly this is driving me mad. I have to type very slowly and deliberately when using IE.

For some reason it doesn't seem to pick evey key stroke up. It is fine when using office apps though. It seems to possibly be linked to the fan being on constantly.

Online games run slowly too.

I have bought an air duster can but not much came out of the fan area, so the fix that everyone keeps suggesting on here for fan issues hasn't helped, the fan is still noisy and it has taken me ages to type this.

Please help me!

Answer:Satellite A300: missing letters while typing fast & noisy fan

What plugins are you using in IE? Some plugins/toolbars can drastically affect the performance.

Have you tested it in FireFox or another browser? You can download FireFox from here:

Did you install Windows yourself? Or are you using the factory Windows installation?

Maybe you are missing some drivers, for example if you have not installed the correct Graphics Drivers, Windows will run in VGA Mode (software mode), which is very slow.
Have a look in Device Manager for driver problems.

It can also be caused by installed software. Perhaps you have two Antiviruses installed? Maybe you should try backing up your data and running Recovery. That would determine if its a hardware or software problem.

A BIOS Update may also help. You can get the latest BIOS from the Toshiba website in the support section.

When typing, very randomly, it doesn't register that I hit a letter. Even when I type one letter at a time very slow I might have to push the letter 2 times for it to display. It's almost like the computer is thinking but that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried using an external keybord and it isn't helping.

This is on a T43p IBM ThinkPad running Windows Vista. Any ideas?

I am having an issue with the keyboard on my Satellite c660 laptop, part number: PSC1LE.
The best way I can describe it is as a stuttering problem because it comes and go's (fine for a few hours, then not for a short while).

The problem is that for reasons unknown to me I keep encountering a problem where the A, N and Enter keys do not work when pressed. Occasionally pressing the key repeatedly (they aren't jammed) just makes the letter come out, but I can't keep pressing the key five or six times to get one letter. Just to mention, I have not spilled anything on the keyboard.

I have done full anti-virus and spyware scans but have found no issues.
I have this evening done all of the windows updates available to me, however it doesn't seem to have done the trick.

After restarting the device following the updates all worked well for about 15 minutes, until the same three keys stopped working again. On this occasion it lasted only for a couple of minutes, and now I am writing this with the same keyboard.

Note: I am not using the original keyboard. I changed the board due to minor material damage but had it done privately.
However this was done the better part of a year ago and has worked perfectly since being installed, until this new issue occurred in the last few weeks.

If anyone has any further recommendations or suggestions as to what may be the cause or any solutions then please share them.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard issue

I think you would understand that nobody is able to say why your keyboard malfunctions.
Only if the notebook hardware has been checked/scanned, it would be possible to say what?s wrong here?
But generally speaking there is a good workaround to diagnose the problem.

You could connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook and could check if the same problems with the mentioned buttons will occur.

In case the external USB keyboard would work properly, I think that your internal keyboard is the troublemaker? in such case you would need to replace the keyboard once again.

This started to happen a few days ago and I only recently bought this laptop, about 4 weeks ago. But anyway, whenever I type, the keyboard keeps missing out letters, symbols and spaces. There doesnt seem to be a pattern of which lettters etc are left out. It looks like a delay between each letter while typing / the keyboard is slow to respond.

Hello Everyone.

I am just new to this forum. Im so sorry for my bad english from now. I hope i can explain my problems.
I just bought a laptop from United States with a bargain price. It is an awesome laptop but there are 2 problems and they r big problems for me.
It is Toshiba Satalite P305D-S8828 which is not available in europe, only is sell for USA.
Thats the link :

Laptops keyboard looks nice, soft and good at typing, but especially on a msn messenger box or forum reply page, when i am typing, it miss some of my typings??? I mean i normally use my keyboard fast, but it is like it doesnt press all the buttons but i really press the letters. So the things i write are mixed, not understandable cos of missing letters.

This is not my first laptop. I used a few more before but nothing like this happened before.
It doesnt happen always but generally happens.
I dont know what to do and this really do my head in.
I am using Vista Ultimate Turkish. Do you think this is an OS problem? Or maybe the bios? Its the latest one (v1.90) I heard the same problem happened to some Fujitsu Siemens laptops but with a bios upgrade it was solved. I hope you understand my problem and someone help me.

My second problem is my FN+F9(function key) doesnt work. But some of them working, like FN+F1, FN+F2, FN+F3... work but FN+F9 DOESNT? :(

Go to the Toshiba US site and download the latest BIOS. Having the latest BIOS is important on new models.

For the Touchpad issue, download and install the latest Value Added Package for the P305D, and reinstall the Touchpad driver.
If you installed drivers for your USB Mouse (for example Logitech or Microsoft drivers), remove them. They may be conflicting with the Touchpad

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Hi guys,

I just bought a new optical keyboard and mouse (made by kensington and quite cheap). The mouse is fine, but I've got problems with the keyboard. I realised that I was having trouble typing in passwords and things as it was doing strange things, so I decided to test it out in notepad. I realised that although certain keys are typing fine (mainly the outside ones), some of the inside ones are doing very odd things. e.g. the 'y' key shuts down my computer, the 'n' or 'm' key seems to type about 3 different letters and it goes on, certain keys open up new windows, and other functions in windows start happening, and I can't figure out why. Answer:Keyboard is typing several letters instead of one needed

Try an external (USB) keyboard
If that works without issue, then it sounds as though your laptop keyboard is faulty (dust or moisture)
You could try blowing it out with high compressed air (compressed air cans can be purchased from many electronic or computer tech stores)
But you may need to replace the faulty keyboard

This has been happening every other day for me recently where I will be typing and my keyboard will randomly start typing the wrong letters or pressing certain keys will open the menu bar, but my computer to sleep or just type completely random letters. I've googled it once before and found that I should change the settings in control panel > regional and language settings which worked for me once but lately it doesn't.

I've even purposely added a foreign language and then re added my normal one (UK) but hasn't helped, it was already on the proper settings anyway. The last two times it has happened was on the night and left my keyboard unplugged, the next day I plugged my keyboard back into the tower while the computer was still loading up and it has been working fine now and did the same again last night. I don't know why it does this? Also google suggested a FN key but my keyboard doesn't have one.

My mother's computer started having issues with the keyboard, recently. I'll say it how i see it, but obviously, i might be missing something.

When typing the letter q on the keyboard, "qt" comes up. w and e are fine, r types "re". This happens with two different keyboards. I brought by my (this) keyboard, and it worked fine, but i only tried for a minute. On her computer, i tried both a ps2 and usb keyboard (native for both, no adapters).

Right now, if i try to login, when i click on a user, it fills in the password field (as if there was a stuck key) and tells me the caps lock is on. Capslock button does turn it off, but it did not look like backspace was doing anything. The bios did not complain of a stuck button. Safe mode (i happened to try with networking) has the same issue. No issue using the keyboard before windows loads.

Using teamviewer from my computer to hers is tough. I can hit capslock with sometimes works, keys sometimes work and sometimes don't, if it types in two letters, i can use the mouse to highlight one (to overwrite) when continuing. With a lot of effort and time i can login. Clicking icons on the desktop does not work, from the start menu does.

I tried hitting the helper menu to get the on screen keyboard for logging on. The first time i tried, it came up and worked. Now the button doesn't do anything.

I got myself a Scorpion K9 two weeks ago and it was working perfectly. Yesterday it just suddenly began to type in wrong letters, such as "X" is now "GX", "K" is now "LD". The number "1" is now my shutdown button.

Things that I've tried:

Pressing FN+NUMLCK.
Removing my keyboard drivers.
Simple restart of the pc.
Sytem restore.

Please can you help me out?

I have THINK PAD X40 that is a few years old.  I was working away today and all of a sudden the key board is typing numbers instead of the letters.  I am using the alpha keyboard - not the numbers.  I tried everything I can think of but nothing I have tried has worked to turn the numbers off so I can't even sign on because my password is coming up numbers instead of letter!  Can anyone out there help me?

I have a new Pavilion laptop with Windows 10 and very annoyingly when I type fast keystrokes are missed.
This occurs on any key and so it appears to be a software/op system problem.
Any solutions please?

Answer:missing letters when typing fast

@Maxlondon? The keyboard speed may be set too slow. Adjust the keyboard speed pretty much in the same way this worked in previous versions of Windows. Control Panel > icon view > Keyboard > Keyboard Properties >> adjust as needed Example Reference:Typing speed is slow on windows 10, how to change keyboard speed? Other than that, make sure you have installed / updated your relevant HP Drivers for Windows 10.  Sometimes the Drivers in the computer's Driver website support page are newer than your "new" notebook. When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

My laptop keeps typing numbers as opposed to letters on certain keys.

I have run my antivirus programme and it is clear ? I am running Windows XP.

Any ideas as to what to do? I have checked the languages and all seems ok there. I have run my spyware and privacy guardian. All reports clear.

Basically, I am now stuck as to what else to try........

Hope someone can help.

Answer:Keyboard typing numers, not letters on certain keys

Many laptop keyboards have a section which can be used for numeric data entry only.

These keys are normally just a block of the main QWERTY keyboard and accessed by using a Function key.

You have probably got the keyboard into this "mode"

when i hit letters in my applications, it says im hitting numbers, and even when i hit the numbers on my keyboard, it starts going "1,2,3,4,5" ect. just from hitting 1 number. for instance when i go on youtube and hit 1 on a video player, its supposed to keep taking me to a certain part of the video, but it just keeps going forward until it restarts and then goes through again. also when i play minecraft and i try changing my settings, if i want to set "move left" to "a" it says i it number 1!?!? i know a good bit about computers, but this is just BAFFLING me, i have looked ALL OVER this website and all of the people that had this problem just had there NUM lock on, and i cant use any applications while this problem is going on, so please, anyone, help me out

Answer:Keyboard is typing numbers instead of letters? (NUM LOCK IS NOT ON)

If this is a laptop see if this helps.

If you're writing numbers instead of letters when you press the keyboard of your laptop and you must hold down the Function key (Fn) to write normally.

This is due to the fact that the digital lock is activated. To solve this, simply press the Fn+Numlk or depending of the model, press the button or Fn + Shift +Numlk

I have had my del laptop for about a year and a half. everything has ben fine, but earlier today, my cat walked acros the keybaord, and now, as you may be able to se, it won't alowe me to type double leters or even backspace. i've given up trying to corect my typing so i apologize for the erors. i did some research and found some people with similar prolbems, but they were al with newer laptops. ive never had this problem before and i am prety sure it's the result of my cat probably hiting a key or something. regardles, i do not know how to fix it. i cant scrol using the aros, type properly, or even backspace. i can't even highr my volume. can anyone help me?

Answer:laptop keyboard not typing double letters or

First try System restore to any date before the incident (preferably a few days or a week). If that does not work, uninstall the keyboard in device manager and restart, that should allow windows to reinstall the drivers. The cat probably hit a strange combination of keys like ctrl+Shift+something else and you could look all day and not find the options to correct it directly. One of these should help. In the future, put the system into sleep if you walk away for a few minutes (or close the lid), Hibernate if for longer, and shut down for hours or overnight. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

That is most likely a virus, you need to run a full scan with your antivirus and make sure it isn't compromised. I would also recommend you move this to the malware forum, then you will get it touch with people that are certified to help you with this.

I am about to embark on writing a few french (and German) letters on my computer at home which has as you can expect a British keyboard. Is there any way that I can change the language over to French or German standards so that it picks up and recommends where words and accents should go without me having to "insert symbol" or do strange letter contributions? Does this make sense?Or do I need to buy a French and German keyboard to get the accents in?Thanks!

Answer:Typing French letters on a British keyboard

You need to load the French and German Spell checkers. Type as normal then do a spell check and point the spellchecker to the relevant language. It will change them for you.

Can we have the model number of the laptop? Have you tried an external usb keyboard? If an external also misses letters then it is the motherboard. Otherwise it likely needs a new keyboard and cost and difficulty of replacement is all over the board (so to speak) depending on the model.

Hello. I have just received my Y700 a couple weeks ago and have noticed that while im typing it intermittently types double letters. It iis not all the time, but as you can see it just happened. It happens more when i am typing full words and sentences quickly, and not while trying one letter at at time trying to provokke it to happen. I had hoped after all windows updates were finished it would fix itself. it is getting quite annoying to have to correct everything I type. It is a brand new laptop so not to happy about this. Has anyone else with this laptop experienced this? I have updated all the drivers and seems to happen in any program i have tried.  If anyone has any insight to whether this is a hardware problem or some sort of software/driver problem, please let me know.  thanks

I have 2 problems and would love to hear your thoughts. (Bold)
Before couple weeks ago, my mouse started to act weird, like it stops moving for couple second and I hear the sound of a new device plugged in then it goes back to work, afterwards ... it stopped going back, a restart was a must for it to continue working EVEN THO the mouse lights were still on.

In few days, the keyboard of the laptop it self (built in) stopped typing some letters (back-space, enter, D, I), I've booted into a portable OS and the keys weren't working too, I assume it's hardware problem.

I went and bought new mouse and an external keyboard, the same USB problem that happened with the old mouse happened, I thought it could be some drivers or some software interupting, I formatted my PC and the problem still persists! BUT I do not remember the USB disconnecting or any sort when the windows was FRESH and not connected to the internet (were some drivers could be installed through windows itself).

Laptop is N53SN ASUS Laptop.

- Built-in keyboard: any thoughts? And what shall I do about it? Replace or is there something I can do other than replacing?
- USB disconnection, the lights still work on both keyboard and the mouse when they disconnect, I have disabled the "Power management setting" that makes the PC turn off the USB ports for power-saving.

Thanks, and sorry if I missed any needed information, it's my first topic.

Answer:USB ports disconnecting / Keyboard stopped typing some letters

Ok, so I had Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, but I wanted Professional because I heard it takes advantage of the dual core thing when Home doesn't, so I installed Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition 2005 and then upgraded to Service Pack 2. I didn't do anything on the computer before upgrading to Service pack 2, except register the computer and things, which I found out my problem. When entering my Email, instead of the @ sign coming up, the " sign came up.. here is a list of the keys that shouldn't be coming out when the button(s) is/are pressed(Note, I have an American Keyboard and an American copy of Windows):

Shift+'[email protected]
Not this / but the other slash=#
Shift+Not this / but the other slash=~

Is there anything known to fix this? Because this is getting very annoying, and I just want my keyboard to be normal lol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

my mother has a Toshiba Equium, and has just phoned to say that its stopped typing the letters "s", "d" and "g" - does anyone have any ideas why this would happen?

Thanks, Clare

Answer:Re: Equium's keyboard has suddenly stopped typing some letters

Looks like a keyboard malfunction...
In my opinion you should contact the ASP technician in order to replace the keyboard.
The point is that it?s not possible to replace the single buttons... of course you can replace the key caps but nit the full button...

Therefore a keyboard replacement would be necessary in order to solve this problem.

Hello all! So I looked around the forums for an answer before I posted, and I found a topic that was about this same problem. The person finally solved the problem by system restoring their laptop to before September 19th. I did this and disabled automatic update installation, and I was fine. Then yesterday my dad was using my laptop to look something up. Apparently he thought it would be "helpful" to install any updates I had, and he updated my laptop before he gave it back. Today the problem came back, where I'll be typing and my keyboard will decide to give me numbers instead of letters. I tried another system restore, but it didn't list any days before the beginning of October as options, no matter how hard I looked, so I can't possibly restore to before September 19th. Is there any way I can get rid of this problem, or did my dad just ruin my laptop?

HelloWe have an issue where our users of the Lenovo Yoga type in Word or Excel.Whilst typing a sentence users have reported a series of sevens (7777777777) appearing like that randomly throughout.  Sometimes random letters too.  This sequence does not stop until you press Enter. You have to constantly keep deleting and restarting a sentence. This happens when using an external USB keyboard and monitor.  Our Yogas do not have NUMLOCK function on the laptop itself.  Any help solving this mystery would be appreciated! thank you

Answer:Keyboard randomly inserts numbers/letters whilst typing

Hi Redr,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with mistyping the letters on your Lenovo Yoga.

Please let us know is the system is Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga or Lenovo Ideapad Yoga?
Check with booting the system into safe mode and check if the issue persists in that also.
Check with uninstalling all keyboard adapters from device manager.

Hope this helps!

Gone though the "Add-ons" one by one.
Uninstalled Google Earth.
Uninstalled Itunes.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support.
They had me turning things on and off and still no solution. (I had plans to go see Jeff Dunham so I had to go. He was great BTW.)

I've been the owner of a Toshiba Satellite C660 for approximately five days, and I'm already experiencing severe keyboard lag. Like users of the L270 model, and other posters on this forum, the keyboard has dramatically slowed down and letters are being omitted, slowing down the typing process.

I've tried to update my BIOS, as numerous posters have suggested, but my BIOS is bang up to date.

I haven't tried removing the battery or anything like that. Frankly if I have to do that to get my keyboard working properly the computer is going straight back and I'm demanding a refund.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Several keyboard lag

I never saw any L270 users here... As far as I know there is no such a notebook model?

Anyway, that?s really strange and I never heard about such a problem on Satellite C660. In my opinion everything what you can do is updating the BIOS and using preinstalled Windows version. If you can still notice the same behavior, ask the seller for a replacement model.

I agree with new: This shouldn?t happen on a five day old notebook.

Good day!

my concern is about my Toshiba laptop I bought it 2 months ago in Europe when I reach in Philippines my son keep on playing it suddenly it was turn off and it didn't open anymore.

I go immediately to Toshiba centre at Cagayan de oro city and I found out that it was the keyboard problem but they could not replace it because there are no available keyboards suited for that laptop. How can I fix it?

Answer:Need new keyboard for Satellite C660-1DG

At first I must say that biggest problem for you is that warranty cannot cover keyboard replacement and you must pay keyboard exchange alone. Notebooks from EMEA (Europe ? Middle East ? Nord Africa) countries have EMEA warranty only so warranty is, unfortunately, not valid.

To be honest I don?t understand why the keyboard must be exchanged if the notebook doesn't start properly.

Anyway, this notebook model has keyboard used on many models so to find new one should not be problem. Best way to order new keyboard is eBay. In last 3 years I?ve ordered several keyboards over eBay. You will not believe me but all of them I ordered from China.

Since we bought this laptop in November '10 it has had an intermittent problem with typing. Occasionnally the keyboard will either miss out characters typed or double type them. It can happily do this all day and then stop and go back to normal.
We have restored this back to factory settings and it still does it intermittently. Our IT man insists this is a software problem but has been unable to find out what it is.

Bizaarly we bought two of these laptops at the same time and they both have the same fault.

The question mark and forward slash key plus the last letter of the alphabet - cannot type the letter!
None of these will function with or without the shift keys.
I have updated the driver - nothing has been spilt on the keyboard.

Is this just a key combination issue or should I return the laptop to supplier.

> The question mark and forward slash key plus the last letter of the alphabet - cannot type the letter!

Does this function pressing other keys; for example Y is Z and Z is Y or @ is ? and so on?
Possibly the keyboard layout does not match the right language.

Check this Microsoft page how to change this:

Otherwise if this will not help you, then I would say its hardware related issue so in such case the keyboard should be replaced by ASP!

Hi there

Got a Toshiba Sat Pro C660-1UX with a crazy keyboard.
Just started yesterday.

Pressing some keys I get nothing, some wrong letters and when I press 'd' I get the date and time appears !
Have updated the BIOS, no change. Plug in a USB keyboard, that all works Ok.

Will a new keyboard fix things ?
I see they're ?20 on eBay.

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro C660-1UX keyboard gone crazy

> Plug in a USB keyboard, that all works Ok.
Yes, this means that keyboard controller is OK and the internal keyboard needs to be replaced.

> Will a new keyboard fix things ?
Yes, new keyboard should fix this.

This question relates to a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-1UX Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Some of the onboard keys (E, T, U, I, O, A, B, N, together with the Enter key) fail to register.
All of the other keys tested so far appear to register normally.

When connecting an external USB keyboard, all keys function properly. However, when using either the onboard keyboard or the external USB keyboard, it is necessary to hold down whatever key is selected for approx 2-3 seconds in order for its character to register. This makes typing incredibly slow and is understandably unacceptable.

I've checked device manager looking for errors, but am unable to find any. The driver for the keyboard is listed as installed and working properly, and driver update says that the latest version is in already in use.

I have also scanned for viruses using Malware Bytes and Spybot, and also with the laptops own pre-installed antivirus software. All of the full system scans return a no threat found message.

I have read that the keyboards on these machines can sometime be problematic, which could answer why only certain onboard keys function. The fact that all keys on the external USB keyboard work would seem to confirm this. However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this probl... > When connecting an external USB keyboard, all keys function properly.

This means that keyboard controller is OK and the internal keyboard is faulty.
To fix this keyboard issue, the internal keyboard should be replaced.

>However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this problem.

Hmm? I don?t think so?
The keyboard delay may be related to the settings.
You can check this in control panel -> keyboard

My keyboard stopped working and after trying different things I read in other forums I went ahead and replaced it. New keyboard was working perfectly until now that it all came back but slightly different...

Original keyboard wouldn't let me type any numbers and letters, v,b,n,f,g,h,r,t,y, were dead, plus the whole row of F1 to F10. The new keyboard was working perfectly but now mouse pad doesn't work and I get extra letters when I type "R" I get r5y78 instead...""vm" rather than m, and fh rather than h...

I'm not sure whether it's a motherboard issue but it's very strange that usb keyboard and mouse work fine however new keyboard worked great for about a week and now I'm using USB keyboard again...

Any suggestions?

Laptop model: Toshiba Satellite c660
OS: Win 7

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite C660 keyboard not working

If external USB keyboard works correctly, the keyboard controller should be OK. So I don't think its motherbaord problem.
I guess the new keyboard is faulty too and you will need to get another try and will need to replace the keyboard once again.

Hi everyone,

I recently updated the BIOS to version 1.60 on my C660 PSC0LE-02300JEN (1 year old) and the keyboard is not working properly at all and at times stops working completely, rendering it not usable (I'm writing this on an external USB keyboard.).

There was a recurring problem a few months before I updated the BIOS with the keystroke being delayed or unresponsive sometimes when typing but in the main it still worked.

So I updated the BIOS, as suggested, and I am getting the following serious problems:

The spacebar is either unresponsive or when pressed writes +2 or +++++++++++++++++++++++ over and over until I stop it by pressing the spacebar again.

None of the numbers work.

At times the whole keyboard stops working and none of the keys elicit a response.

Solutions I've tried:

Taking out the battery.

cleaning the keyboard to get anything dislodged from out underneath the keys.

Reinstalling the 1.60 version of the BIOS.

I'm unsure what to do next and would really appreciate advice and help before I attempt to get the keyboard replaced. It would be great to get an opinion before I payout for a fix.

Replies really welcome.

Many thanks

Answer:Satellite C660 - keyboard is not working

I think this keyboard issue is not related to BIOS update not to other installed software.
Fact is that you can use the external USB keyboard as you said above? this means that the BIOS is ok and also the keyboard controller functions properly?

This means that the issue is related to internal keyboard malfunction. I have no explanation why this happened after the update but it could be simple a bad luck?

In my opinion, the issue can be solved by keyboard replacement.

Hi all,

wondering if there is such a thing as a backlit keyboard that can be fitted to the Satellite C660-2D7 , the old one is very easy to remove.

Answer:Can I use backlit keyboard with my Satellite C660-2D7?

As far as I know you cannot do this. Connector for such keyboards is quite different.

Recently I bought a Satellite C660, but now I would like to know if it's possible to replace the standard keyboard with an illuminated one. Will an illuminated keyboard not work because it needs some kind of a power cable for leds ? Does Toshiba sell such component individually ?

Answer:Illuminated keyboard on Satellite C660

Such upgrade is not possible.
Illuminated keyboard needs power supply and it must be connected on small port placed on the mainboard. So if your mainboard doesn?t have it there is no chance to use illuminated keyboard.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite C660-10D for my birthday last August and was a bit disappointed to find that it didn't include the Windows 7 disk - instead I found a "Recovery" partition to be used if there was a problem. Another disappointment was finding that the 500Gb hard drive I thought I was getting was actually about 360Gb - the remainder apparently partitioned off for the "Recovery".

After a few months use I decided to check out the recovery option and found it was inaccessible (Press F8 at boot up just didn't work). Scouting around the 'net found another option (I think that was something like ESC 0 at boot up) but that didn't work either.

I should have taken the darn thing back to the shop at that point but it was a 10 mile round trip and an injury kept me from driving. Anyhow, I decided to make my own back-up with Acronis (which has been a life-saver on my desktop PC).

The main installation took 3 DvDs and the "Recovery" partition went on another DvD. With hindsight, I should have backed up to a spare USB harddrive - it would have been quicker.

Anyway, Sod's Law, a few months later and I had to do a re-install from the Acronis back-up and, whilst everything seemed to install OK, I now just get the dreaded BOOTMGR IS MISSING message. Scanning the hard drive shows that the Windows installation is there but it just will not Boot.

Scouting around the 'net only came up with suggestions that involved using the installation... Read more

Answer:Satellite C660-10D - Bootmgr is missing

> I bought a Toshiba Satellite C660-10D for my birthday last August and was a bit disappointed to find that it didn't include the Windows 7 disk - instead I found a "Recovery" partition to be used if there was a problem

The user manual provides an information that you can create own Recovery Disk using the preinstalled software called Toshiba Recover Media Creator. So apart from the HDD recovery, then Recovery disk could be used too.

So its always recommended to create an the Toshiba recover disk in case something wrong would happen to the HDD recovery or the HDD itself?

The Bootmgr is missing could be solved by new installation.
So wither you would use an Win 7 Microsoft disk and would install the drivers which could be downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page or you will order the recover disk here:

From my knowledge it?s not expensive: about 30?

Hi folks,

I have Satellite C660,
at first i had a virus, and tried to reinstall windows, but no good.
When it came up to the point of saying there was not enough space on the disk to install windows,
I realised i had forgot about the partition bit.

Now when i try to boot up again, its a black screen which missing.
So when i try to boot up again, i get to the same point about not enough space on the disk
so im going round in circles, and getting no where,

I'm thinking about getting a new hard drive, but does anyone know how to fix this before i do have to buy a new drive.. cheers

Answer:Missing BOOTMGR on Satellite C660

Missing boot manager is a common error message which appears if the notebook cannot find and boot the system.
So you have to find the reason why the system cannot be found.
I think its HDD problem. Probably the HDD or system partition is faulty.

In my opinion you should access the BIOS and should check if the HDD is listed on the first BIOS page.
In case it does not appear in the first BIOS page, the HDD isn?t recognized and therefore I think it should be replaced before trying to install the system again.

I have a strange problem with a Satellite C660-18C, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

This is a friend's laptop that crashed a little while ago. He appears to have tried to reinstall an operating system, although not using the recovery media, which he never made when the notebook was new. He has not managed to do this, so asked me to take a look.

The hard disk is still the original Toshiba disk that shipped with the laptop, although it has been removed and replaced. This was done to do some basic testing on the hard disk, which showed no errors.

If you boot the laptop from a USB stick with a Windows 7 Pro installation image, you get as far as choosing a partition to install Windows on to. It shows "Disk 0 Unallocated Space 232.9GB"

However, it reports "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I have looked in the Bios and I can see no trace of the hard disk. For instance, if you look under "Boot", this list only shows, CD/DVD, FDD, LAN and USB.

It seems to make no difference whether the SATA mode is set to "AHCI" or "Compatibility"

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Satellite C660-18C HDD missing from BIOS

Usually good working HDD should be listed in BIOS (first BIOS page).
There you should see the HDD name and the size.

If first BIOS page does not provide any details about the HDD, then the HDD was not recognized by BIOS and in most cases this means that the HDD is faulty.

If you are 100% sure that this HDD isn?t faulty (for example it works in connection with another notebook), then an HDD controller malfunction could cause the problem?

But I guess it?s an HDD issue?

Hi folks,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help...

I've got a Satellite C660-10T (p/n: PSC0LE-00j00JEN)..

I've just reinstalled Windows 7 (Ultimate, x64 from my own DVD). I've got all the shipped apps and drivers going apart from the Fn+F8 Wifi on/switching.

The flash cards app shows along the top of the display when I press Fn, but there's no F8/Wifi panel and pressing Fn+F8 does nothing.

The Wifi driver is installed and the wifi's currently on and working, but cannot be turned off.

I've got these installed:
Value Added Pack-20101130111348
Flash Cards Support Utility-20110519151724

Both of these two wifi drivers lead to the same behavior:
WiFi RTL8192ce_WindowsDriver 1005.31.1222.2011.F0066.P0830 ISS 1.00.0180.L
Win8 20121203105641
(it's the Realtek RTL811CE, according to device manager)

I have a Norton Ghost image of the same flavour of windows within which the Fn+F8 combination works fine, so I think I can be sure all relevant hardware's good (thats the slow old install I'm trying to replace).

I've tried every varient of every driver or app I can find, but the results are either WiFi looks to be installed OK but can't be turned on at all or looks and connects OK but can't be turned on/off.

Does anyone know the trick to getting the Fn+F8 Wifi /off feature both showing and working with a fresh windows installation please?

Answer:Satellite C660-10T - Missing Fn+F8 Wi-Fi switch

I bought recovery system disc (Disc R15379SO) on Toshiba support to refresh my C660 1R3 Satellite. Unfortunately my computer continue to block with this message : BOOTMGR missing.

It's the first time I try to reinstall factory settings on this computer from 2011 and it's impossible.

If you have any advice about this message and the real meaning I thank you.

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-1R3 - BOOTMGR missing

In my opinion this message appears because the notebook did not boot from optical disk drive but tried to boot from the HDD.
Are you sure you booted from CD/DVD drive?

In case you are 100% sure that the notebook booted from the inserted Recovery disk, then in my opinion the new ordered disk is faulty. You should get in contact with the supplier and replace the disk
