Satellite M50-130: No display after switching the external monitor to primary monitor

Question: Satellite M50-130: No display after switching the external monitor to primary monitor

I have a very strange problem.
My borther was on his user area earlier on, and I managed to get the secondary monitor to be the primary monitor and disable the laptop's monitor in return, however, when it comes to me, it won't happen...

Any help would be much appreiciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite M50-130: No display after switching the external monitor to primary monitor

Hi

Could you please be clearer? Is it possible to see something on the external monitor?
Do you see anything? What happens if you use the display device switch function FN+F5?

I don?t know how you have managed to set the external display as a primary display because on my notebook this option is grayed out.
However, you should see the notebook display if you will boot the notebook in the ?safe mode?. Please check it!

Hello everyone,

last week I got a new Tecra S2 notebook and I have the problem to set my external monitor as primary display in the dual view mode. The topic in the window is greyed out.

Does anybody know how i can activate this function?

On my old notebook (Tecra S1 with ATI graphic adapter) there was no problem to switch the primary output from the internal to the external display.

sincerly,
Martin

Answer:Tecra S2: Setting external monitor as primary display

Hi Martin

As far as I know it is not possible to set external monitor as primary one. The notebook LCD display is always set as primary one. I use Tecra M1 (similar to S1) and this option is also grayed out.

In my office I use it with docking station and external monitor. When Windows starts the first will be shown at external display but the log in window is always shown at notebook LCD.

Sorry but it is like it is. Was Toshiba designed display driver installed on your older Tecra S1?

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi nomonitor, and welcome to TSG

Check your user manual for the laptop to see if has has a special key or a Function key that lets you toggle between the internal display and external monitor.

Hello All,

I have an M200 tablet with GeForce FX Go 5200. I have a Toshiba docking station and an external LCD display. When docked, I would like to use the external LCD as the primary display and the builtin LCD as the secondary display. (I want the taskbar, icons and newly opened windows on the external display when docked.)

Unfortunately I cannot find the right combination of settings for this. If I set Windows to extend the desktop to the external screen, the "use this as the primary display" option is greyed out. I also do not get the span horizontally or vertically options in the nView utility, just Standard and Clone (and this only if I don't extend the desktop.)

How can I have the external screen be the primary while the internal being the secondary?

Thanks in advance!
With best regards,

Levente

Hi,

I would very much like to have my 17" external monitor (1280x1024) selected as the primary display device, unfortunately the option is greyed out in the display settings.

Alternatively, I would like to run 1280x1024 on both the built-in-monitor and the external monitor and then turn off the built-in-monitor, but this does not seem possible either; the resolution changes back to 1024x768 when I try to toggle the desktop onto the external monitor.

I have updated the display-driver.

I hope somebody can help.

Hello all,

I've set my external monitor as primary because the laptop screen is broken, via Q&A: How do I make an external monitor my laptop's primary display?.

However, when waking from Sleep the primary display is switched to the broken laptop screen instead of the external. If I hit Window+P on my external wireless keyboard, I am able to select the external monitor and then it will come on, most of the time.

Is there a way to set the external monitor as the primary after sleeping? Perhaps a third-party program or registry tweak? I've googled around and searched this forum, but have not had much luck. All drivers are up-to-date

I found this forum post which looks promising, but not sure if the solution proposed is applicable to my case.

Thank you.

Hi I'm using Window Vista Home Edition. I've been using an external CRT monitor with my laptop for several months without problems. To connect to the external monitor, all I do is tick the 'extend to this monitor' button then 'apply'. I can then move windows to the external monitor and watch movies.

However, since yesterday my laptop does not display images. I put on the external monitor and noticed that my desktop, icons, etc were all on the external monitor. Even worse I when I go to the display settings, I see that the external monitor is labelled 'default monitor'. On the Nvidia control panel it is shown as 'primary monitor' and has the number 1. When I try to set my laptop as primary on the Nvidia control panel it brings up a dialogue box to stop me from changing it.

To my surprise, I now have to tick the 'extend to this monitor' button to view images on my laptop, which is a blank desktop with blurred image and colour. Also I have to move the mouse to the left of the CRT monitor to get to my laptop screen, the complete reverse. When I click on 'identify monitors' it shows my CRT as 1 and my laptop as 2!

This is crazy! I need my laptop to remain as the default monitor, number 1, and primary. But it now seems the CRT has taken over as my main display.

When I power off, disconnect the CRT, and power on, the display returns to my laptop. But as soon as I connect the CRT to my laptop, my laptop display goes blank and the CRT takes over.

Hiya,

When I hook up via VGA to external monitors (I've tried various ones, Samsung, Dell, Iiyama) on my C660D-124, it can have problems switching to them. Typically what happens is that it switches fine for about 5 seconds, then switches back to the LCD. The only reliable way I can find to switch is to turn the machine off (hibernate is fine) while the machine is switched to the external display.
This is a right pain as I switch monitors all the time.

Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?

I have a rather strange problem with my Satellite L755D. I normaly use an external monitor which works fine.

If I want to switch over to the laptops monitor using Fn+F5, the laptop monitor remains dark, but you can see (more guess) the desktop.

Just the background light doesn't turn on. Same thing if I boot without the external monitor. At the beginning (BIOS phase?) you can see the normal symbols, then the monitor turns of.

Funny thing is that both problems do not appear when I cut off the electrical supply and the laptop runs on battery only.
Any ideas what the reason could be?

Thanks
Matty

Maybe you should check the power plan configuration which is used only in battery mode.
It could be possible that the backlight settings have been set to a lowest value using the battery power.
I recommend you to check this within the ATI catalyst as well as the windows power options.

Maybe is it technical limitation of Intel graphic card. I know for example that on Portege M200 it is not possible to set the external monitor as primary device and the internal screen as secondary device. No way.

Maybe some M400 owner post own experience about that.

I need to use an external monitor as my primary and I have Windows XP installed on my 3000 N100. How do I do it?Thanks in advance,Lynn

Answer:Can I use an external monitor as my primary monitor in Windows XP

Yes. This should be an option under the software driving your graphics adapter.   There is more than one way to access that.  Shut your laptop off, connect your external display to it, start the display & then the laptop..  The laptop may well show you a dialogue asking how you wish to use the external monitor, just follow the dialogue to use an external monitor as a primary one.  If not, open Control Panel, then open 'Display', go to the 'Settings' tab, where your choices will be displayed.   Some monitors have downloadable drivers that provide more options that your basic operating system provides.

Hi

I have a display problem with my laptop, which is:

When I connect my computer to an external display (projector - data show - using rgb cable or s-video), the contents of my computer are not displayed.
I used F5, Catalyst Control Center, but without success.
When I connect it with a TV using s-video, I get the message "no signal".
I think that the devices know the existance of each other, but the contents are not sent to the external display.

I don't know what is the problem. I need to use my computer and display using projector for my presentations which is very frequent.
The problem is that it used to work then suddenly it stopped displaying on external displays.
I couldn't figure out the problem then I thought that the settings may have been changed accidently.
So I formatted my computer to return it to the factory configuration, but my try failed and it still doesn't display on the external display.

My computer specifications:
- Toshiba Satellite A200-1BJ
- CPU: Intel Core2 Duo
- OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
- Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600

Does anyone know the solution??

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite A200-1BJ - No display on external monitor

In your case I would update the display driver and the BIOS. Both you can find on the Toshiba website:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

Have you tested different cables? Maybe it?s faulty or too long.

Make also sure that you use a supported display resolution and refresh rate for the external display. You can change this in Catalyst Control Center.

Hi,

is it possible to use external monitor on Satellite L40 together with built-in display with different output? For example you would have larger desktop, etc.
Simply does the laptop have two graphic adapters?

Answer:Satellite L40 - external monitor and built-in display

You can use external monitor or TV with your notebook. You can have cloned desktop or extended desktop but I don?t understand what do you mean with ?different output?.
In user?s manuals document is explained how to use it.

Do you have this document? You can download it from Toshiba download page.

Notebook doesn?t have two graphic cards.

I wish to use the external display in Windows XP. It would be necessary that the external display was the main thing, and desktop expansions occurred on the laptop display. The driver, downloaded from your site do not allow to make it... Though in Windows Vista such possibility is.

How it is possible to solve my problem?

Hi

As far as I know this is not possible. In my case this option is grayed out!!!

But maybe it?s possible on your notebook. In such case you should access the graphic card properties. Then go the last tab called ?Settings?.

There you should mark the display 2 and should enable the option called ?use this device as the primary monitor?.
But if this option is not available you will be not able to set this!!!!

I received my new Satellite Pro L300 this evening & followed the set-up instructions one by one. Although the power lights etc were lit i had no monitor display at all. I then connected it to my old pc monitor which *did* work. I tried pressing Fn/F5 but still nothing on the notebook monitor?

Thanks in advance,Adam.

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - Display only works on external monitor

Can you see a faint image on the internal screen? If yes, then the backlight may have failed.

If you dont see an image, but the backlight lights up, then the cable may be loose or the screen/cable/mainboard/vga may be faulty.

If neither the image or backlight come on, then it could be a number of things.

Is the unit still under warranty? Send it to an ASP for repair :)

I'm helping my older brother in law with his Satellite A665 laptop that has developed a very odd display problem.

As his wife has poor vision, he has been using an external Westinghouse VGA flat screen display concurrently with the LCD on the laptop.

Now though, when the external monitor is disconnected he also loses the LCD display.
I have tried switching to LCD only using the Fn/F5 display control, but when LCD only is selected it stays blank.

Next, I went to the Toshiba HW config utility and disabled autoselect monitor on power-up and chose instead LCD display only on power-up.

Restarting this way also results in a blank display, until the external monitor is reconnected, at which time both displays are active.

Bottom line is that I cannot find any obvious way to get the laptop's LCD to display without also having the external monitor connected and displaying. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this perplexing problem.

Answer:Satellite A665 no display - external monitor is working

>Bottom line is that I cannot find any obvious way to get the laptop's LCD to display without also having the external monitor connected and displaying.

Does this mean that internal display works only if external monitor is connected to the notebook?

This is really strange. As you said, usually you should be able to switch between the internal display and external monitor pressing the FN + F5.

It would be interesting to know if changing the BIOS settings to default would reestablish the internal display. I guess it will not solve your problem but it?s worth a try.

I assume that this is hardware problem (motherboard) and this will not be easy to fix

Hi there,

I just got an older Toshiba Satellite A100-283 and tried to connect it to a 22" TFT. Somehow it seems that the graphics card of that notebook does not support external screen resolutions such as 1920x1080. I can find 1920x1440 and such but no 16:9 resolutions at all.

I run a dual monitor setup, and I use two user profiles and switch between them throughout the day. I set up both user profiles identically, which is as follows:

In each profile, I run multiple instances of Internet Explorer 9, so I have four or five Internet Explorer windows open with multiple tabs open within each window. I keep two IE9 windows open on my left monitor, and three open on my right monitor. I also have MS Word and MS Excel open on my left monitor, and two notepads open on my right.

When I click on Start and switch user accounts, if I go back into my first user account, my windows will have either moved off screen somewhere, or they will have moved to the first monitor. The behavior is inconsistent in which windows are shifted around, but the windows end up moving none the less, and it ruins my work flow. I spend all my time setting up the windows back to their 'correct' positions.

Switching users to the 2nd user account will cause the same consequences with the windows set up on the 2nd account, thus defeating the purpose of utilizing multiple profiles to make work more efficient.

I recently switched to Windows 7 on a new computer. My "old faithful" has Vista 64 does not exhibit the window shifting issue.

I am running a new 2nd gen sandybridge system, with an asus h67 motherboard and an i7-2600. I have 16 gigs of ddr3, and Win 7 64 Home Premium. I have an ATI Radeon HD 6570 running both monitors, with the latest video drivers installed. I'v... Read more

Answer:Windows shifting back to primary monitor when switching users.

After doing a ton of research and then replicating the issue on a number of Win 7 systems, I'm giving up on this OS for dual-monitor business use and going back to Vista 64. I really wanted to work with Windows 7, but I've exhausted my efforts.

I tried a number of third party window management utilities and software, but they either are too tempermental and don't work consistently, or work great but mess up something else (like slow Adobe Flash performance with one window management app). It's all too gimmicky. It's really sad that such basic and expceted functionality is nonexistent in a newer version of an OS. Two steps forward, one step back.

Here is a really long thread on another forum which addresses the issue. The first post in the thread was made in January of 2010, and the thread is still going. Kinda depressing that the issue won't be addressed by MS.

Hi.

I am having a strange problem with my new Satellite L850-1V5 with AMD RADEON HD 7670M dislpay card.
(It runs windows 8 home 64bit)

At first I could not open CCC.
So I uninstalled the program and reinstalled the drivers which I found here, on Toshiba Europe website.
Now it runs fine.
But now I have another problem.

I first tried to extend/duplicate(whatever, it does not really matter) my desktop using the VGA port.
In CCC I could see that it recognized the model of my external monitor and even the mouse cursor acted like the desktop was extended.

BUT
1. There was no image on the external monitor
2. On the Input Menu(:where one chooses the port to be used, i.e. VGA, HDMI, SCART, DVI etc etc) of the external monitor the VGA port c o u l d NOT be selected, as if there was no cable on the external monitor

Then I tried an HDMI cable with the same result, with the difference that on the Input menu of the external monitor the HDMI port c o u l d be selected, as if there was a cable on the external monitor, but the monitor was saying "no signal".

I tried the same steps via Windows Control Panel(Display menu).

Same results....

I tried it on 2 different external monitors(both LG ones, even though one is about 3 years older than the other, so I guess it should have nothing to do with the monitor).

Any ideas?
Is this a Hardware problem, a Software problem? Should I visit Toshiba Service?

Hi

Please would some one be able to advise me?--- The screen on my Satellite P200 13Z laptop went black several weeks ago, since then I have linked it to an external moniter (LCD television) using a VGA cable and moved between the two using hot keys Fn + F5. This worked fine until about two weeks ago when I noticed the display was working on both my Laptop and the External Monitor - I thought 'great' my laptop is working again and I unhooked my laptop from the external monitor, needless to say when I next used my laptop I was back to a blank screen

I re-connected my laptop to the external monitor and used the hot keys again to view the screen on the external monitor, the login screen comes on and I log in, after about 10 seconds of the desktop loading the screen goes blank as though the display has toggled back to my laptop but there is no display showing on the laptop. I have tried to toggle back to the external monitor but it won't do this using the hot keys unless I switch off the laptop and start the process again.

It seems as though something is stopping the display being viewed on the external monitor as I am sure its loading OK except for the visual bit.

I would be grateful if any one has any advise that might help me solve this problem - sorry if its appears to be a long question but this is my first posting on a forum.

I?m glad to hear that!

Hi buddy,

And now you can?t use FN+F5 key combination anymore or did it work again after restarting your computer?

Well, it?s hard to say what is wrong exactly but I would try to update the display driver. Check the Toshiba website for an update and try it again with external monitor.

Do you want a new internal display?
If yes you should contact an ASP in your country. The guys can order all original spare parts but new display is not cheap?

Hello

I never heard about such an issue.
What is the native screen resolution of your internal monitor and what resolution is set if you connect an external monitor?

Maybe you should try to update the BIOS. You can find it on the Toshiba website.

If the external monitor is connected can you see a picture and what is the screen resolution of this monitor?

I have a number of these Satellite P300 PSPCCA-OC201Y and recently bought external monitors for them.
Since then we seem to be getting "Display Driver has stopped working and has recovered" messages, then after about 5 of these, it crashes.

Starting with one machine, I have updated display drivers, bios was current, all to no avail.
I then did a complete system restore back to original. Has not solved the problem.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite P300: Display Driver has stopped working using external monitor

hi Keven Dickenson,

as you said you restored the system and still there is no way to get things work it may be a hardware issue...
i my opinion you should consult a servicepartner to check this out...

is there any of the machines working with the external monitor at all?
if none of them is able to connect to ext. display maybe your installation has a problem or the monitor is faulty...
try it with another monitor and recover one system to factory installation....

My laptop screen just doesn't display anything (look like when the computer is off) but when I connect the external monitor, then the desktop will be displayed on that monitor. I tried to recover the laptop using the recovery disk and it worked again, but today, it stopped working again.

I again have to plug in the external monitor, and after I tried to reboot, I keep pressing F8 but the start up mode doesn't come up, only the sound of when you keep pressing a button for too long beeps, however, the laptop monitor works again.

How do I fix this problem?

Answer:Satellite M30X-111 screen doesn't display anything but external monitor works

What do you want to do? Do you want to recover the notebook?
If yes, you don?t have to press any F8 but you have to boot from the Recovery CD by pressing the C button immediately after notebook starting.

But this issue sounds like you have switched accidentally to external display.
I would recommend to checking the option Fn+F5. This combination let you to switch between the display and external monitor.

Hi, I have two major issues. I'm connected to an external monitor using a display port to hdmi converter, and an hdmi to dvi cable. When I am on "Energy Saving" (switchable graphics) mode, the external nomitor blinks every 5-10 seconds, but it is perfectly fine when I am under "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode, so I'm not sure that it's the cables/adapters/monitor that I am using. The second is I cannot change my brightness using fn+home/end when I go through this process: In "Maximum Performance" (power plan) mode (while plugged into ac)unplug acGo into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan) modeplug in acplug in external display to displayportGo into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) modeuntil I change back into "Maximum Performance"(power plan) mode then back into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan)mode then back into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode. This is a bit annoying, but at least I found the steps to temporarially work around the problem ... edit: Okay it happend to me again, but i can't fix it (haven't tried a reset though, but i don't want to bc I just started the computer and that's ridiculus). Also, I can change the brightness fine when the computer is in Energy Saving" (switchable graphics), but I get the blinking problem, which is why I mentioned it earlier.

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.

I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.

I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.

Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Hello,

I'm trying to get my external monitor set as my primary from my laptop. I have gone into the 'Display' and tried different settings. I've tried the FN F4 button... a message will say "Switching to external monitor" but nothing happens.

This monitor has worked before. It is an ACER. Please Help.

* Also, in the 'Display/Settings' when I click #2 as my primary and then click 'Apply' or 'OK' it always disables the #2 monitor.

I have a training environment using W530 laptops that are enclosed in an area in front of the desks. It is not pratical to get to the computer as it is hidden away and therefore I need to be able to use the dvi cabled external monitor for bios setup, boot order, etc. Right now the boot options are hidden from the external monitor until windows loads. Then the external monitor becomes active. Any way to bypass the laptop monitor altogether? Thanksruss

Answer:W530 need to use external monitor as primary

I think that BIOS always shows up on the internal, but on the W530 in the BIOS, you can turn the video mode to "DISCRETE ONLY" and then set the boot monitor to the video out.

Is the DVI attached to the Display port Via adapter?

hi,

I just recently bought a gaming PC for Christmas.

i Turned on the power with the screen connected through the mobo's Vga adapter but it wouldnt display anything, the monitor kept displaying No signal and turning off.

So i connected the VGA to my graphics card and it worked, but my problem is that i want to be able to connect 2 monitors and if 1 port (MY primary) doesnt work i cant do that.
Ps.

I can use my computer through the secondary Vga port, but its on my graphics card, so if this is a driver issue i should be able to fix it right?

PC Specs:
AMD Phenom II X2 545
4 GB RAM
Graphics card: Nvidia Gforce 9500 GT

Please help

I posted a thread for quite some time about our laptop having issues with its own screen. Now it's fixed, I was wondering how we could make our external monitor as primary. The screen doesn't work now but the laptop is usable.

We plugged in a VGA adapter to a monitor and it shows up. It starts on the "Welcome" screen. I would want to know how we can see from boot, the logo, "Windows is starting"(i think that was it), etc.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:How do I make external monitor as primary for laptop?

On some laptops, if you have an external screen plugged in, both the LCD screen and the External screen will show the POST, Starting Windows, and then the login screen. Some laptops do not, as the external could be only ran by the Operating system. I used to have an old Acer Aspire 5536 with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and I would have an external screen plugged in for gaming. My system always booted from the primary, and never showed on the external until Windows was booted.

You can set it as your primary in Windows, but not as primary in the BIOS, unless there is a setting to change that.

I have connected an external 1280x1024 flatpanel to my A2, set extended desktop and the native resolutions, everything looks "sharp".

But every time I click on the "make this (external) monitor the primary monitor" box (and apply...); the external screen goes black and the portable screen goes back to 640x480 resolution...

Before I was perfectly able to make my external screen the primary one, but since the 1.30 --> 1.40 firmware update this doesn't seem to be possible anymore... Still, in my monitor-preferences the appropriate box is clickable. I also updated the graphics-card drivers, but no better results there.

Anything that I can do to make this work like it did before? Meaning all screens on native resolution and the external screen being the primary with the Windows-bar at the bottom? All help appreciated :-)

Greetings from Holland!

Hello my friends here at Bleeping Computer. I'm here for another question. My question.

Well, rather first my description of the problem. I have a Windows 7 Laptop computer which is an HP computer. I use a seperate monitor to use it though because Its easier being that I usually don't take my laptop wherever I go and I have this set to display only on Monitor two which is the seperate monitor. I have the bottom in Screen resolutions to display monitor onl display TWO so that It does not display on main laptop's display. However, when I boot my computer up it boots up on display one and only when its booted up goes to display two. I really really really need help to fix this. That do I do? Thank you very much, and God bless.

I do not think you can, as I have a lap top as well and I do not see anywhere in the BIOS to select display out 2 for default boot up.

Hi,

I have the following problem for a few weeks now:

I have a "main" monitor attached to DVI and a beamer attached to HDMI of my GTX-960 graphics card. The monitor is set to primary display.

For watching movies, I usually switch off the monitor, leaving only the beamer turned on. For a few weeks now, the beamer automatically becomes primary display when I turn off the monitor. It did not do this before. This behavior is very annoying, because it brings a black screen for a few seconds whenever I switch on/off the monitor, which I sometimes do while a movie is running. In addition KODI sometimes crashes in this moment and PowerDVD stops playing the movie.

The only thing I have changed at that time was that I manually changed the beamer to primary for watching a 3D blu-ray, but I changed it back when the movie was finished.

Does somebody have an idea about what causes this behavior and - more importantly - how I can stop this, i.e., keep the monitor beeing the primary display even when it is turned off?

Thanks for all ideas!

So I connected my w530 to an external monitor. When my w530 is the primary display, video I play on the external monitor stutters (very choppy). However, when I make the external monitor my primary display, then there is NO lag. There is a clear difference. What's wrong?

Answer:W530 (primary) with external monitor which stutters video, help?

Hi, Poonti

Have you checked your video settings in BIOS? If not, then I would recommend doing so to make sure that this issue is not being caused by a setting.

To enter the BIOS, turn on the machine and tap Enter repeatedly. Do this until a meny appears with a list of options. Press F1 to enter the BIOS. Once in here, navigate to Config ? Display and see what the setting for the Graphics device is. Try setting it to Switchable if not already set at that.

Hope it helps,
Adam

It looks like the laptop runs of the intel card and the monitior runs of the nVidia... or do the display sizes just not work together?

I use T400 and Acer p223w monitor. From some reason I cannot make the external monitor to be the primary monitor.Using the Presentation Doctor I have the option to define the external monitor as the primary but when I test it, it says that I have illegal parameters of color depth and resolution. The problem is that the parameters I use are the parameters currently defined on the two monitors (which mean the monitors have no problem working that way).Any other color depth resolution combination won?t solve the problem. On the other hand using the same parameters if I configure the laptop monitor to be the primary everything works just fine.Any idea what causing it and how to solve it will be highly appreciated.

Hello, I'm using an SL400 with integrated Intel graphics and I have the following problem: Whenever I switch two or from the external monitor using Presentation Director, my computer freezes for a second, goes to the BSOD for a second, and then reboots. I am connecting to an external 22" LG using an HDMI to DVI cable, and I always use Extend mode when using the external. The only way I can use the monitor is if I boot up the computer or wake it up from Hybernate with the HDMI cable plugged in. To detach the monitor, I have to turn off the computer because if I don't, it will force a restart anyway. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the Intel drivers and Presentation Director. I don't think its a problem with Presenation Director, though, because the same thing happens when I try switching monitors by right clicking on the desktop and using Intel's interface. Any thoughts?

I am running W10 Pro 1607 14393.10. This problem has occured in earlier builds.

I have a 2nd monitor that I have set as an extended display. I usually keep Adobe Reader open to view pdf as I work. If I leave my pc and return to enter password, it is not fully sleep - it can just be like 10 minutes. The 2nd screen is blank (shows extended desktop) and the pdf is minimized. This happens with other programs too. When I click on it, it restores to primary screen and then I have to redrag it to 2nd screen. This issue is really frustrating.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am attempting to use an external monitor at work instead of the laptop screen (not in adition to). NVidia which makes working software has no problem seeing the external monitor (DVI) and switching to and from it.However... I was hoping to use the function key to switch between the built in and external monitor. I configured the Fn+F7 settings to switch between internal, external, and both in succession. However, pressing Fn+F7 now switches to both monitors and will never switch back to one or the other. Thus making the NVidia solution fai.So I have a work around... but I was thinking how nice it would be if the built in function key worked like it did on my old cheap laptop.Any ideas?

Hi, I have a SL400 with the nVida 9300GS graphics card.  Since day 1 I've had a problem using an external monitor (ViewSonic NX1932w) on the VGA connection.  When I switch to the external monitor using either the Lenovo Presentation Manager or the nVida control panel, it will randomly and inconsistently switch back to the laptop display only and then back to the external monitor.  This is true if I use the external monitor alone, or in dual view.  Sometimes it will happen once every few minutes, sometimes not at all, and sometimes continuously back and forth until I manually switch back to the laptop only.  Rebooting may or may not help. I've reinstalled the updated nVidia display drivers and the Presentation Manager app from the Lenovo website numerous times.  I've updated the BIOS.  I ran the PC Doctor hardware test on the video system and it passed.  I sent the unit in for warranty service, and it came back with an updated BIOS and a factory reinstall of the hard drive, which did not fix the problem.  I called Lenovo support again and was told to reset the power manager settings, which I've adjusted every which way and did not fix the problem.  I disabled the Presentation Manger entirely using only the nVIda control panel and that did not fix the problem.  I disabled the nVidia control panel using only the Presentation Manager, an... I'm not sure, but this might work: Quoted from http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=1665321. Disable TMMThis tweak is responsible cutting system start time 3-5 seconds andeliminating that blank screen flash when you start Vista. This normallyoccurs when Vista searches for external monitors on start up of Vista.If you are not using an external monitor, or don't switch back and forthalways...turn TMM off.Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:1. Go start/control panel/administrative options/task scheduler.2. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."If you use an external monitor occasionally as I do, just press and hold FN and press F8 twice to switch monitors.I'm aware this is suppose to be a boot time tweak, but if this task were running during normal operation, it would have the same or similar effects as your problem, so I'm just proposing you try this, and even if it doesn't work, you would still help with your boot time. ^^;

I recently bought an LCD TV and was looking forward to using it as the monitor for my Toshiba Tecra M2V. I have run into problems.

I seem unable to "turn off" the laptop screen and ONLY use the LCD TV screen to cary out work, play games etc. Rather I seem only to beable to COMBINE the LCD screen with my LCD, effectively creating a "two screen monitor". I have followed all the online help and still I am unable to have only one screen.

I just want the LCD TV as my screen!

Any ideas on how to do this? It is really a pain!!

TIA

Answer:Switching screen off on Tecra and using external monitor/LCD TV

Hello

Usually you should be able to do it using FN+F5 key combination. As far as I know if the unit is connected to the TV you have three possibilities (maybe depends on notebook model) LCD only, LCD and external device and just TV.

You can also try to switch it using GeForce properties:
Display properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce tab > Device Settings > Select output device.

Hello there, I am new to the forums and I've made account here to seek help from the experts about my problem.

I run on a desktop using:
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5570
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2032mw
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

While using my desktop normally my monitor keeps flashing sometimes and plays the driver "plug" "unplug" sound (well it sounds like it)

Then I go check my resolution by right clicking > Scree Resolutions >>>> Here I see my on the display bar changes after the "plug" "unplug" sound comes from "Generic Non-PnP" to "SyncMaster" and vice-versa.

Please note that the screen keeps running normally on the 1680x1500 resolution on both displays, but the transition between those two is very annoying.

I cannot seem to stop it!

I have installed all newest drivers, and driver for my monitor.

Thank you.

Answer:Monitor keeps switching between Generic Non-PnP display and SyncMaster

Welcome to Seven Forums hadihdd. Try this, it just may work. Unplug the video cable from the monitor to the PC. Shut down the PC. Unplug both the PC and the Monitor for 30 minutes. Reconnect the video cable, and the power to both. Reboot and see if this helps. A Guy

I have a new ProBook 645 G1 that I use most of the time with a Dell 34" monitor (3415w) connected via the DisplayPort with the lid closed on the ProBook. If I lift the lid on the ProBook, the display switches to the laptop fine, and if I close the lid, it switches back to the external monitor fine. However, if I switch inputs on the monitor to view a different computer, then switch the monitor back to view the DisplayPort that the ProBook is connected to, the ProBook will not display, either on the external monitor or on its own screen (if I open the lid on the ProBook, the display on the ProBook is black as well). The only way I have found to recover the display on the ProBook is to force the laptop down by holding the power key until it powers off, then powering it back on and letting it boot up. I have tried cycling the lid and waiting to see if the ProBook will eventually output on the DisplayPort or the ProBook screen. It won?t. I have tried the Windows +P keys without effect, as well as unplugging the DisplayPort cable from the ProBook, but the display on the ProBook will not come back on. The ProBook boots up fine on the external monitor. I have found that if I open the lid on the ProBook *before* I switch the input on the monitor away from the ProBook, then switch the monitor back to the DisplayPort connected to the ProBook and close the lid, it switches back to the external monitor fine. I got the Yoga 2 Pro earlier this year and love it, except for one big issue: I use it during a laptop during the day, and then when I get home, connect it to a larger 1080p monitor via HDMI.  You might guess where I'm going with this:  when I'm using it as a laptop, because of the incredible resolution, all of the icons are way too small, unless I go into the display settings and choose to view things at 200% (I think the screen says something like "change the size of all items"). That works great and things look amazing, except when I hit apply I have to log out and back in for it to take effect. Then when I hook it up to the monitor, everything is enormous - I have to go back and change the size to the smallest (I think 100%) setting.  This would be fine, but I have to log out and back in again. Every time I switch from the monitor to the laptop, I have to log out.  This is an enormous pain, as I normally have tons of programs open, some at specific locations on the screen - so I have to close them all and effectively recreate my desktop multiple times per day.  Am I doing something wrong?  Is there any way to switch from monitor to laptop screen without logging out?

During installation of v/drivers, Windows recognize the second monitor. However later, it keeps randomly switching between first and second monitor, with different intervals (from 20 sec to 20 min). I don't have this problem when i use Linux, so it doesn't seem as a problem with a cable. Thank you!

Uninstall all video drivers over Device manager and select delete software before clicking OK, after please restart PC. After booting let drivers install itself then restart after finished, if it fails to install over Windows Update itself then download latest driver from Asus site and manually install.

on 2/17/16 [Personal information removed] and again on 2/26/16 had live chats with HP to correct the issue with no longer getting sound thru my HP 750-114 to my Dell Monitor S2415H.   Sound thru the monitor works perfectly until I use some of my programs or an upload appears.  Both times the HP tech had to uninstall sound driver and reinstall the driver.  Each time I spent at least 1.5 hours on live chat while they corrected the issue.  The last correction lasted less than 24 hours and the red X at the speaker on the task bar appeared which told me to connect external speakers.  The sound works with external speakers connected but I am not happy with that solution as originally it worked fine for at least two months using my monitor. The last technician even had my dell monitor set as the default sound monitor. Even with the external speakers plugged in if I insert a CD I do not get any sound!!!!!. I am extremely frustrated with HP and Windows 10 regarding this on going issue.  My last HP has less problems over the 6 years I had it compared to this new computer.  Unfortunately I know just enough to get myself in trouble with the computer so unless I get step by step instructions I am reluctant to uninstall the driver and re install the sound driver myself. FRUSTRATED BEYOND BELIEF!! Regards, Bobby-left

Pretty much what I asked in the Subject line.

Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop's display goes obscenely dim a few seconds after windows loads up, safe mode, VGA mode, doesn't matter, and I'd assume just DOS as well. I can tell the bulb is off, as hinge area no longer gets obscenely hot. I can read what I have to with a flashlight so I can drag windows onto the monitor I've been using as an extension of the desktop, but is there any way to set that to my main display? (I.e. where the start menu and taskbar is and the such)

In theory there should be a way, but the "Use This Device as my primary monitor" option is greyed out. Anyway to override that?

The LCD panel is dark. One can see that the display is still working - only no backlight. When pushing the lid switch (which turns of the LCD when closing the lid) the dark screen turns to black. I.e. this switch is working properly. External monitor is working. When changing with "Fn/F7" between LCD panel and external monitor the backlight turns on for a few seconds but quickly turns dark again. In the moments when the backlight turns on one can see that the display colours and everything are quite fine... (so no redish which would indicate a lcd problem).  Moving the lid mechanically cannot bring the light back. I was sure it would be a problem of the LCD flex cable and replaced it - but unfortunately with no result. Would be glad about hints what could solve the problem!!!Maybe changing the inverter?Or might it just be a bad soldering joint or loose cable connection? But where? In the lid or on the main board...?Changing the panel itself is of course a quite costly affair.. Thank you for your help!!! (Model No.: 1858-3BG)

Hello,

I tried to connect an LCD on my laptop, at the first place i went control panel -- display -- settings -- advanced -- monitor -- properties -- Device usage: disable!!

That enabled the secondary LCD screen but the most stupid thing is that when I wanted to return back to my laptop screen I followed the same procedure with the LCD screen.

The result is that now both are blank. The laptop's screen turns into blank as soon as starts to load windows. Fn+F5 combination didn't help. I also tried to enter windows in Safe mode but it was not possible.
Does anybody have any ideas???

PLEASE.

Thanks

Have you tried installing the lastest drivers? And is the second monitor spanned or cloned? I don't know here to tell you to look as I'm an nVidia guy...haven't used ATI in years.

Dell engineers have appeared to have overlooked a setup on the new m5510 precision laptop.  Originally found on a laptop and pro support was going to send out a new motherboard and lcd, however I reproduced the same scenario on another brand new m5510.

If you hookup an external monitor to the laptop via the built in hdmi port and than in windows configure that as your primary (disabling the laptop screen).  Also turn off windows action to sleep when you close the lid.  Now close the lid to use the laptop as a 'docked' computer with the external monitor and mouse/keypad.   This will function fine, however once you try to 'restart windows' here is where the bios is not functioning correctly.

The laptop will shutdown and a white Dell log will popup on the external monitor and stay there.  Than the LED on the leading edge of the laptop will begin to flash an error sequence (2x amber followed by 7x white and repeat).  I am told that sequence references a defective LCD.  The LCD works fine, all diagnostics pass.

The problem appears to be that the computer/bios is not properly recognizing that the external monitor is hooked up (despite it showing the dell logo) and is throwing this error fault haulting boot to the OS.  With the lid closed the built in LCD is deactivated, but the external is definately there the whole time.

If you leave the laptop screen up however the system will properly restart.  IE:  exter... Read more

Answer:Precision M5510 External monitor (primary) & lid closed software/bios design flaw

I have the same problem, I have seen the 2x Amber followed by 7x white many times. I tried a Dell TB15 dock only to find it even more buggy. I returned it, awaiting the supposed TB16.
Question is, is Dell going to do anything about it? Do they even test things like this before releasing new firmware?
Did you ever find a solution qwerytfsadg?

Hi there!

What I want to do: "...extend my desktop on a second monitor, but, my second monitor is compounded by 2 HDMI TVs and a VGA LCD stage monitor both used as Duplicate setup in Windows 7".

How I have done this (and it works!):

-I have 4 diplay devices (2 HDMI TVs that are connected using a splitter and two monitors both on VGA);
-I also have two "video cards" (GPU): one Amd radeon hd 6570 (with VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports), and Intel HD onboard (aprox. 1GB with VGA output port).
-I have connected the TVs with a HDMI 1x2 splitter on amd radeon's HDMI port, and one of my VGA monitors (this one acts as a STAGE MONITOR for the singer / artist lyrics).
-The integrated Intel HD card has my "Control" monitor attached that I use as my primary monitor (the one that shows me the Desktop and the lyrics control application).

Software aspect of the problem: In Windows 7, I use my Intel HD video card as my primary display, then I can extend on a second monitor the desktop! (The second monitor is my VGA Stage monitor). The Third display that appears in the setup is the HDMI splitter, this one is a Duplicate of my stage monitor. I use: 1680x1050 resolution for my primary display, and 1024x768 for the second monitor... (I know, this resolution is too small for my HDMI TV's... Windows recommends me a 1900 x ... fullHD resolution, but my STAGE MONITOR does not support that much, so I need to use a small resolution).

PROBLEM: EVERY TIME I DO THIS SETTIN... Read more

Hi folks. New here.  Sorry if this has  been asked/answered, but I searched and didn't find it. My company got me this great new W500 laptop.  Came with minidock and external monitor. I have the monitor plugged into the minidock, and have it to the right of the laptop. Laptop is monitor #2, and external LCD display is #2.  works great.  UNTIL.... If I lock the console, and fold the laptop monitor closed (to have it power off - i.e. at lunch break, etc...) When I come back, the external monitor is now monitor #1 (has the windows task bar, Start menu, etc...) and it thinks the laptop monitor is monitor #2.  I can't figure out how to switch them back without rebooting.  It's very frustrating, b/c the 'sides' are swapped too.  Meaning the external LCD display which is physically to the right, is "on the left" as far as Windows is concerned, so if I drag the mouse off-screen to the right of the external display, it arrives on the left side of the laptop (which is physically to the left). Is there a simple solution to this?  I can't live with having to reboot every time I lock my monitor. I'm using Windows XP if that makes a difference.

Answer:Dual Monitor issue. Lock console & external monitor becomes monitor #1

more information... It's the 'advanced minidock' with keys. The monitor is connected via the DVI port, not the plain old VGA port.

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Answer:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

Have a large screen tv on wall connected with HDMI to computer. Have a Samsung monitor on my desktop. Cannot make the desktop my primary monitor no matter what I do. (although have had this working before). We had a break-in and monitor was stolen. So replaced with new but cannot make it primary.....always defaults to samsung tv on wall. I have tried all normal solutions.... unplugged all....began with desktop monitor....added tv, etc. Have spent way too many hours and am sure answer is simple. HELP PLEASE!

Answer:wrong primary monitor in dual monitor setup

Right click on your desktop, select Screen Resolution, then click on the screen you want to make primary. Select Multiple Displays, and it should be there!

I friend gava me a laptop that has a broken monitor display.  The circuits went up in smoke and the screen is black.   However, it does have a rear VGA output connector so I connected it to a remote flat screen monitor and it worked just fine.   With one exception.   The display did not fit the monitor.   So, while I was fiddling around tying to adjust the display , I did something wrong    and now the monitor is working as a secondary display ( I know "STUPID"    ).  It has a nice background picture but I can not use it to work with the operating system.   (Windows XP)  Can anybody tell me how to get the monitor back to working as the primary display ? ?

Answer:I need to get my secondary monitor back to duplicating the primary monitor.

Yes, you can get it back. Try to boot t in safe mode. It should work in sage mode. Then create a new user account. You will need this to help you get the feel of it. The new user should default to the duplication mode. Also, does your laptop have a blue F key to select external  monitor.? on mine it is the Fn+F8 ti turn on/off the external VGA.Didi you read something like this?Dual monitor setup  - MicrosoftHere is one of many You Tube videos  about dual monitors.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddrBGpRYlQ0This also can help:Code: [Select]Win+↑ Maximize the current window

I've searched some forums and while i have found all sorts of dual monitor problems i haven't found this one.

I have a MSI M670 laptop ( with nvidia 6100Go graphics card ) and a Samsung SyncMaster T240HD. I always connected my monitor with a VGA cable on my windows xp and everything worked fine.
After i've installed Windows 7 when i connect the monitor to my laptop automatically the laptop monitor is disabled and the Samsung becomes the primary display.
If i press windows_key+P Computer Only is selected and whatever i select from the list ( duplicate, extend, projector only ) nothing happens and Computer Only is always selected.

In the Nvidia panel under the "Set up multiple displays" option after i connect the Samsung it becomes the only option so i cannot revert to my laptop display whatever i do.
Rigurous Display Detection does not help at all.

Any ideas ?

I had posted this on the Monitor forum, but they said this is a Windows 10 issue and not a monitor issue.  When I disconnect the P2715Q from the laptop and start to use the laptop LCD, everything is OK. When I reconnect the P2715Q to the laptop, I notice font changes. In Windows 10 File Explorer the font in the left panel is larger than the right panel, and the fonts in Quicken are smaller. When I reboot the laptop, everything is back to normal on the P2715Q. Is this normal?  Is there a setting in Windows 10 that I need to make so I don't have to reboot when returning to use the P2715Q?

Having a very strange (and annoying) issue with the display. I can only see the display on my Twist after connecting it to an external monitor first. If I do not, all I see is a black screen. No cursor, no anything. If I connect it to an external display via the display port to VGA adapter, it works fine. If connect it to an external display and then disconnect my external display, the display will remain on the Twist. However, if I reboot, I lose the screen again until I connect it to an external monitor. I made sure that "PC Screen Only" is chosen in the Fn+F7 option. This is obviously a serious problem. This is for company use and our users will not have a VGA monitor handy with them where ever they go. I checked the hardware manager and all the drivers are installed with no warnings.

Answer:Lenovo Twist display issues - No display unless I connect to an external monitor

Figured out a work around and narrowed down the problem. If I hit the Second Screen key (F7) after booting, it will go PC Only as the first choice and bring up the display on the laptop after a few seconds. The puzzling thing is why it seems to choose the external monitor as the default monitor on boot, even if it is not conected. I've tried running System Updater to make sure that I have all the latest drivers. All the display settings appear to be correct.

I'm currently running lenovo y560 0640, and I'm connecting to a rather old model of AKAI HDtv. It does not support above 720p and whenever I switch my settings to TV only it automatically sets the TV setting as 1366x768 or some other resolution that my TV is unable to display and shows the error Not support.
I tried using the duplicate display option which works as I switch my display on both the laptop and the TV to 1280x720. But I am currently trying to run it on TV only so I can try playing a few games on my TV. I have AMD Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series display driver.
But using the duplicate method I am still able to play a few games
but my main concern there is whether or not it will over work the graphics card displaying the game on two separate displaying devices. And also if there is a way I can set the resolution of the TV before having to actually switch to it.

If anyone can help it will be very helpful.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

HI everyone,
I'm having an issue with my displaying settings and I'm hoping someone here can help me to solve this.

I recently had an older HP Pavilion Media Center m7760n Desktop PC rebuilt. The old power supply fried the motherboard so I need to get a new power supply and motherboard. Here are my current specs.

Mainboard : Asus P5QPL-VM EPU
Chipset : Intel G41
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 @ 2133 MHz
Physical Memory : 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
Hard Disk : WDC (1000 GB)
Hard Disk : WDC (250 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L ATA Device
Monitor Type : Hewlett Packard HP w22 - 22 inches
Monitor Type : Samsung SyncMaster - 15 inches
Network Card : AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCIe Ethernet Controller
Network Card : AR5006X 802.11a/b/g Wireless Network Adapter
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional 6.01.7600
DirectX : Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index : 2.9
As you can see from above, the "video card" is actually integrated into the motherboard.

The computer works perfectly except for one major problem. I have 2 monitors, one is 22" with 1680 x 1050 resolution and the other is a 15" monitor with 1024 x 768 resolution. At the back of my computer I have a VGA port and a DVI port. The 15" is connected to the VGA port and the 22" is connected to the DVI port.

My computer desk sits next to my entertainment system, and I have it connected to two monitors: the primary 22? Viewsonic LCD (DVI) and my 42? Toshiba TV (HDMI hooked in via my receiver). When I just want to browse the ?net or email, I use the primary monitor. For gaming and movies, I use the TV. For a couple of years now, I?ve had display options to always display the TV (monitor 1). If the TV was off, it would default to the Viewsonic, per the Windows feature to always default to the current monitor if only one was on. If the TV was on, it would stop feeding the Viewsonic and default to the TV, so that any games or movies would display on the TV and not cause any issues fullscreen. This way the TV being on or off determined whether the PC would feed to it or not, and I?d only turn on the power hungry TV for entertainment.

About a month ago, my monitors started behaving oddly. The PC would power up normally and load Windows to the Viewsonic, and during the load up screen the Viewsonic would power down. The only way to see the screen was to turn on the TV. This is on Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium (up to date).
Things I?ve tried:Set the Viewsonic to be the primary monitor and settings to only display on the Viewsonic. Result: If the TV is off, there?s no video to the Viewsonic. If the TV is on, it is black (as expected since I've set the monitor to receive the feed) and the feed goes to the Viewsonic.
Set the monitors to extend across both the Viewsonic and T... Read more

Answer:No feed to primary monitor when secondary monitor is off.

Was anything done to this system just before the problem started?

Have you swapped out the cables and/or tried a different connection to the monitors?

This sounds like a failure either at the video card or the viewsonic monitor electronics, so I would try swapping out the video card and monitor if possible to confirm or eliminate them as the culprit, this can include the cabling.

I had something similar happen when one of my monitors went bad.

Hi guys! I've been coming across an issue lately and wanted to get some insight as to what exactly is going on. I'm guessing it's the video card, and all my drivers for it are up to date, but I want to make sure.

The first time this happened was on 5/31/2014(see attached screenshot). It's happened a total of 4 times in the past two weeks and always at the same instance. I have a single monitor plugged into my video card(HD 6850) and also have my TV plugged in as well for when I want to watch movies and such. Typically I am running my PC in dual monitor mode(duplicate screens) even when the TV is off but when I turn to TV on these past 4 times, the screen flashes black as normal, but instead of both screens appearing again in tandem the TV is blank and my pc monitor now has a GSOD. I've attached another screenshot as well from 6/4/2014.

It does not happen every time but as I noted it's done this 4 times. As instructed I've also attached my zip file with all the info from DM Log Collector. Let me know if I'm missing anything else that you need. My pc specs are in my profile as well.

Hello all! I have a Problem with my W500-Notebook with the FireGL V5700 and Windows 7 as operating system .I use the Notebook-display and an extarnal monitor together for work. Now i can set the resolution on the notebook-display to the resolutions 1920x 1200 and 1680x1050 which is perfect.I want the resolution on my external LCD-Monitor also to be a 1680x1050 for its a wide screen and that is the optimal resolution for it.But I can only set the resolution on either 1600x1200 what makes the picture look horrible. or 1920x1080 what is to high for my monitor. Is this a problem with the display-driver or is the graphic-card not able to drive an external monitor with this resolution?????

Answer:Display-resolution on external Monitor

Does Win 7 recognize and identify the external monitor correctly? Possibly Win 7 sees it as a generic PnP and is limiting the resolution to what it thinks is  the max. Try installing drivers for that monitor so Win 7 knows it's capabilities.
