HDD keeps falling asleep after one minute on my Satellite M40

Question: HDD keeps falling asleep after one minute on my Satellite M40

Satellite M40x-175.

I have updated its BIOS to the latest version (1.60) and since then the hard drive keeps falling asleep after one minute regardless of Windows Power settings or Toshiba Power Saver settings.

Is Toshiba going to release an updated BIOS soon?

Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: HDD keeps falling asleep after one minute on my Satellite M40

I don?t think that it?s a BIOS malfunction. As far as I know in BIOS you can change settings for HDD. Please check it. Furthermore Toshiba Power Saver disabled the Windows Power settings. Did you check the modes settings of Power Saver?

Well i manage to fix my internal hdd from doing that, thanks to you guys a while back. But i downloaded 2 files last night, just woke up and they haven't finish, and i notice when i was trying to delete them, it was a slight pause, and my external hdd seems to be sleep, then woke up, how do i fix this so it can stay on all night when i have my computer on?

Answer:External HDD falling asleep

What brand of external? Did it come with software? This will allow you to turn the sleep mode off or change the amount of time before it goes to sleep.

So one of the users here is using a Lenovo Desktop, ThinkCentre M55 i believe... Since updating to SP3 for XP his computer has now started going into sleep mode when he is away for 20+ minutes and the only way to wake it up is the hit the power button. To stop the computer from doing this, I have always thought to simply go into control panel -> Power -> set the scheme to never turn off the HDD or go into system standby. Hibernation mode is disabled also. I have also checked the powercfg and even that says the computer will never sleep. I have checked the BIOS but there is nothing in the power about disabling these features. There is nothing in our group policy about computers being forced to sleep either. I have also logged in as administrator on his local machine and changed those user power settings thinking that maybe the admin settings would take priority over the limited user for some reason. None of these have prevented the computer from sleeping. This has happened to one other user here and the only solution was to swap their machine with another, a route I want to avoid. Can anybody think of any other potential solutions or why the computer is still falling asleep?

Hey guys looking for some help here. I had this problem at the beginning of the summer and thought i fixed it but its back. The problem being my monitor going to sleep while I'm using it and the only way to get it back is to reboot. It first happend when I was playing Mass Effect 1 and 2. After a little research I narrowed it down to my graphics card overheating. When I started monitoring it the temp would regularly get into the 90's C and also hit into the 100's. One trip to best buy later and an extra gpu fan and it was better (I think I was also careful to take breaks and let it cool). Now more recently its been doing it occasionally. It has happend once or twice in windows but I recently started taking a comp sci class and wanted to install Linux just for fun so I partitioned part of my HD for ubuntu. Now I'm not sure if its because of this but while playing in Ubuntu my monitor has fallen asleep three times today alone. Once was when I was changing the background, once when I was downloading pictures, and once when I was trying to find out how to get the sidebar I had back. So I guess my first question would be is this a hardware problem like I think or is it because of the ubuntu. My money was on graphics card but I took it out and have been using the on board gpu for the past few hours and after the last indecent mentioned above I have run out of ideas and found myself here. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

We have a Dell Vostro 1520 with Windows XP Professional, SP3. It has two user accounts and is frequently access remotely. However, it keeps going into sleep mode.
We have set both user profiles to never sleep however, when a user logs off, the settings seem to reset and the machine sleeps again.

This is becoming a major inconvenience and needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

We have tried altering the settings in Control Panel and running scripts to change the settings in the registry neither of which have worked.

Can anyone else suggest any other solutions please?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried just locking the system using ctrl+alt+del instead of logging off from a user account?

Let me know if this was helpful, meanwhile I will try to research and get more information.

Hey guys!

I have a problem. My new DELL latitude 3330 arrived last week.

All excited, I started it up without any problems. However, after a few minutes working it randomly fell asleep. I turned it back on, and within a few minutes it fell asleep again.
That's basically what it keeps doing. At random moments, at least every 3 minutes it falls asleep. It happens at all times f.e. when I'm typing, moving the mouse or doing nothing.

I contacted Dell support but they are really slow.
I have reset it to factory settings. Did the Dell backup and recovery.
Both didn't work.

I am currently in Safe mode and that seems to work fine.

Thanks for any help you guys provide. Awesome!

I recently agreed to take a look at one of my friends machines as she was fed up with the Dell support hotline. It's a rather strange problem though, the laptop itself will fall asleep at random times. I checked the power settings, and it's definitely not a problem with the way the power options are setup. Also the machine was recently reformatted and is running vista home edition... I know this isn't a whole lot to go off of,

but anyone got any clever ideas?

Answer:Dell Laptop Randomly Falling Asleep

Have you checked to make sure that Vista is actually supported for the model of laptop you are running? Vista can do some funny things if the machine it's self is not compatible.

A few weeks ago, my laptop started falling asleep in the middle of me listening to music, podcasts, etc. It never used to do this. I have the time set to turn off the screen after a minute, and then a minute after to fall asleep. Before this started being an issue, it would not fall asleep if an audio stream was in use, but now if I am on battery power, it will. This morning when my laptop was plugged in, I set the time to turn off the screen and fall asleep to a minute for when it is plugged in, and it wouldn't fall asleep while I was listening to music, so this seems to only be an issue when I'm running off of battery power.

Thanks for any help!

Hi there,

Something new I have discovered in the FCU:
When I ran Disk Clean up seems like working properly. But at the end when cleaning Windows Defender stuff the small window of Disk Clean up doesn't disappear by itself anymore, I have to click somewhere on desktop and it is gone. Is that normal? To me it looks like not completed or bug and who knows how it is cleaning up ...

Thank you all, any info is appreciated.

Hi!These three days, I have a strange new problem with my E440. After I put it to sleep (by preset power button, and I always leave the lid open), it sleeps just OK, but it would wake up again in about 10 minutes without turning on the display (but I can hear the DVD drive clicking, fans starting, and the red LED on the lid stops blinking). Aaand, in a few minutes, it would fall asleep by itself again. And again, and again, repeatedly. Everything else works the same as before, just this new feature is pretty annoying during the night. Do you have any ideas what to do with it?Thank you!

Answer:E440 - constant re-waking from sleep mode and falling asleep again

Well, I've never received any help on this forum to any question yet, but I'll try to keep posting anyway... UPDATE: Now, after waking by itself for the first time, it won't go to sleep again. So it just turns on with the display off, fans on, and is not responding to any button presses. The only solution is reset by holding down the power button.

Hello everyone,

i got a really serious problem: My screen keeps falling down, it doesnt hold itself anymore in the position i put it in.

Is there anything i can do? I got a Satellite A-87.

Thanks guys, Thomas

Answer:Satellite A87 Screen keeps falling down

Do you really have a Satellite A87? Sorry but this notebooks series is not known to me.
Please check this series again!

Back to your issue? According to your description the display hinges don?t work correctly and cannot hold the TFT display in the right position.
To be honest there is no much to do. The faulty hinges must be replaced.
Therefore you should contact the ASP in your country for the help and ask for the further handling.

Best regards

I have a Win XP based Toshiba Satellite M70-340 Laptop. Since last one week - the problem I face is that whatever window/browser/email screen I open the selection scrolls to the bottom. There are very small periods (in seconds) of time when the behaviour is not seen but it pops up again. So an email window scrolls to the bottom and if I move through the keyboard/mouse/scrollbar I am prevented from doing so and the scroll moves down again.

I thought this to be some virus/malware/spyware and I scanned (deep-scanned) with Malwarebytes, iObit i360 Spyware, Mcafee Stinger, Avast, Avira, Eset's NOD32, Microsoft's Essentials but the problem remains unresolved. Threats were found & deleted but problem remains.

This morning I noticed that the BIOS setup screen also showed similar behaviour i.e. the last parameter got chosen/selected automatically which leads me to believe that the Hw may be conking off? I also hear loud beeps when I put it on which launches Windows after I click F12.

Disabling the USB Mouse has no impact. Mostly I can scroll up with the keyboard but the scroll falls back down after some time which is most frustrating.

I have reset the BIOS to default, run the recovery disk (reinstalled/reset the OS), installed SP3 on WinXP to no avail.

What can be wrong beats me. Please help.

Sandeep Maher

Answer:Satellite M70-340 - Laptop Scroll keeps falling down

This is most probably a defective keyboard.
If the problem is in the physical keyboard, it will not help to just attach an external one.
You need also to disconnect the built in keyboard.

So if You are willing to use a screwdriver, please try remove the keyboard.
If the issue goes away, consider ordering a new keyboard for your unit. They are not very expensive.

good luck!

I'm using a Satellite L30 laptop. One thing I am finding annoying is that the fan kicks in quite loudly every minute or so, then quietens down for a while. Using a temperature monitor it looks like the fan kicks in when the temperature rises above about 50, then slows down as it falls. When the temperature is below 45 the fan stops altogether which causes the temperature to quickly rise back above 50.

I want to change the power management settings so that the fan stays on quitely at lower temperatures. I have a desktop computer where it is possible to change the fan settings in the BIOS, but I can't find anything like this on the laptop. Can anyone suggest where I should look - are there any open source or shareware tools which will do this?

Answer:Fan kicks quite loudly every minute on Satellite L30

did you already updated your bios to the latest version? If not, then hurry and check if a newer version is available since most bios updates are correcting some issues like powermanagment settings (ACPI :)) and some other stuff.

Another idea would be to clean up your ventilation system of your machine because a fan which is clobbed with dust, doesn?t work quietly and accurately . A can with compressed air from any electronic market does the trick. :)

I just buy a satellite Toshiba there two days now but the fan will turn on every minute when I go only on the web ...

Listening to music / watching videos, it is almost covered by the sound, but otherwise it's really headlock.

It blows every minute 10/20s, and force even if it is not that strong, it's really disturbing.

Is this normal?

Answer:Satellite C660 - fan turns on every minute

The fan would turn on if the CPU would be stressed.
You can check in task manager what process stresses the CPU and could check if you could disable this.

Furthermore I would recommend checking the Win 7 Power Management
There you can change the settings for cooling modules to battery optimized.

Hope this helps

My USB sockets went intermittant on Sunday night for no reason. 1 min they were working the next they are not. They seem to work when I turn on the laptop then they stop for no reason.

I have

1 removed and reintalled drivers in Driver Manager
2 installed latest chipset update
3 rebooted PC

Any one know why this would happen, the slots are secure, sometimes they work then they just stop for no reason!

Answer:Satellite C650 - USB slots working for 1 minute only

What operating system is installed at the moment?

Usually such problems with USB ports can be solved due a chipset driver update and removing the USB ports in device manager but it seems that you have done this already?

Do you see something unusual in Windows event viewer?

In your case I would also loading the default settings in BIOS (press F9 key). Have also a look on Toshiba website if there is a newer BIOS version available.

My one year old *U840-10M* on Windows 7 _irregularly stops functioning_ for one or two minutes.

This may happen either during regular operation or right after awakening from sleep.
Whether it really stops is not clear, as neither keyboard nor mouse nor touchpad react.
Hence Ctrl-Alt-Delete to check what is happening is no option.
After one minute of deadly silence activities are resumed as normal.

All drivers are up to date. Notebook is used primarily for email and surfing, hence problem appears while using Chrome and/or Outlook 2007.

Any suggestion how to prevent this erratic behaviour is very much appreciated.
Equally welcome are suggestions how to analyse this notebook in order to find out what forces this stop of activity..

Answer:Satellite U840-10M irregularly dead for one minute

Notebook is one year old but it will be interesting since when have you noticed such behaviour. Maybe some background activity blocks your notebook.

On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen. What you can do is to back up all your data and reinstall OS using recovery media. It will be interesting to know if the same problem happens when notebook has ?factory settings?.

I have a year and 3 months old Toshiba L650-1HM, running the latest Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 and Fuduntu 2012.1 x86_64 Linux, I've updated the bios and every other driver I could find in order to try and fix this but so far nothing has worked.

My guess is the shutdown delay is caused either by the ethernet or wireless boards because while shutting down Fuduntu it locks on the "Shutting down NetworkManager:_" routine before resuming the shutdown sequence.

This happens in both windows and Linux.

Obtain second HDD for testing purposes, put it in your notebook, install original recovery image that you got with your notebook and test t with ?factory settings?. If the same happen again and again then we can say: OK there is maybe some software related issue or anything else.

Hi! I need your help! Whenever I switch to battery power, suddenly, one minute later, my laptop turns off for no reason! The battery is fully charged. What do you think the problem is? My laptop is 4 years old.

Answer:After one minute on battery power my Satellite 1400 switches off

Hello Krissy

In my opinion everything that happens has some reason. According to your description I believe that battery is at the end and must be replaced.

It can be that battery status is full but there is no enough power. I have similar problem with Tecra 9000. Unit is also about 4 years old. On battery it runs maybe 10 min but after that this time it switched down suddenly.

When I turn on the computer about twenty minutes is quiet. Than fan starts like a hurricane, slows down and stops. It lasts few seconds. The fan works in this way regularly with one minute intervals.
Is there any possibility to switch the fan on continuous work in slow motion?

Answer:Satellite L20-182: fan doesn't work properly - one minute intervals

If you go to toshiba power saver you should be able to turn your up or down. Once you open this program from control panel, you have the option to change how much your processor runs as well as how much your cooling modules work. Turning either one down will make the fan not come on as much. Then you might want to try and use a vacuum cleaner to suck the air intake grills to clean any dust that could be clogging it up. Dust can make the fan run more because the lack of cool, fresh air entering the system to cool the cpu. Hope this helps.

ok so just recently about 1 week now my computer has really been acting up the biggest problem is the fact its been randomly lagging at certain times when I'm doing anything and even if I'm not doing anything such as playing games (if i just stand still it doesn't lag until i start doing actions again which ruins the purpose of playing games) , surfing the web, or if I'm scanning my PC. To be honest I saw this coming 2 months earlier when I clicked on different task or windows it would lag before opening the window or it wouldn't open it at all then I'd have to click on the one still open and wait for a bit then open it again. But what i don't get is why it took so long to slow down i have took steps in which to fix this slowdown issue like scanning my PC (with Ad-Aware, MalwareBytes, and Advanced System Care), cleaning my registry (with Advanced System Care and CCleaner), Defragmenting (with Advanced System Care and Disk Defragmenter), and I've tried Disk Cleanup
The last problem just started and I don't believe its as serious as the aforementioned but my computer seems to not want to shutdown or restart w/o a hard reboot or pressing the power button. Basically what it does is I click Shut Down or Restart and the mouse shows the little pointer and hourglass and then it just goes back to the fore most window like nothing ever happened are either 1 of these virus related?

What happens when you go to Windows Update? You cannot access Windows Update with any other browser except IE. Which version of IE do you have ? (6,7 or 8) If 6 or 7 try updating to 8.
Blow out all fans with compressed air. If a Desktop, open the side of the computer and when you turn it on, make sure all fans are spinning. (freezing and slowing down are usually overheating) Here is a good article about that:
Is your computer running Slow? You also can go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. Now type a Y and reboot the computer. The Check Disk utility will run at next boot up and try and fix any file errors.
Then you can go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow and press enter. Put the XP CD in and it will take any files it needs from the CD.

So then i upgraded to windows Vista Ultimate, i bought the disk from BestBuy, and installed it was as all great untill now.Now all of the sudden its saying my windows needs to activate, then it says its not a valid product key which it is, and ive entered it over and also all of the sudden seems to be using insane amounts of ram as opposed to what it did when i first installed, i have no idea what the problem is..Also, the Windows Aero ability seems to have gone away, i reset my performance score and tried a ton of things, still no luck. Also, i can no longer connect to my Xbox 360, it can stream music, but it cant go to WMC, it says connection terminated every time.. it used to work. I dont have a fingerprint scanner, nor do i have any firewall programs other than Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, which i opened the ports in.Im so lost as to why this is happening, and i have always been able to fix any problmes with the help of you guys, youre awesome! so i thought id see if anyone knew what my problem was. thanks!!------------------Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 6:21:11 PM, on 11/19/2008Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6001.18000)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Win... Please help because i am who i am!!!

I installed a wireless adsl router to service internet access for my laptop and desktop. My problems started like some others recently described here. Unable to load certain webpages especially msn. Whilst trying to rectify I downloaded Windows Defender, but then noticed I could not get access to updates. This seems to apply to the automatic windows updates also.
Now i notice my desktop seems to be experiencing the same problem and can no longer get to mcafee for updates.

mcafee/Trend micro/trojanhunter/AOLspyware find nothing. I tried the recommended fixes but nothing has solved it.

PS I can get access thru AOL, which is using IE as the web browser. I have turned mcafee firewall off but to no avail.
Also as i have just relocated and most stuff is still in transit I have not tried any fixes requiring my XP SP2 CD as its in transit somewhere. I will have to borrow one i suppose.

Any suggestions very welcome as i have been pulling my hair out here and i dont have any to spare.

Alright so i've had a barrage of pc issues over the last few weeks. Most of them stem from my Corrupt windows install disk.

I Bought a fresh copy of vista and everything was going fine until my pc crashed and wouldn't boot into windows.

I ran memcheck and got a pile of errors on test 3. I took out the ram, cleaned it, dusted the connectors and put it back in. Windows loaded up no problems.

Same thing happened again a week later. Windows crashed, i shut off the pc and pushed the ram into the MB and it booted up fine.

are my ram connectors damaged or is my MB not seating the ram right?

Would Putting the pc on it's side help ? Is that safe?

Yeah thanks for any help

Answer:Ram keeps falling out :)

When you push the RAM into the slot are the white locks on each side into the RAM's slots and 90 degrees to the motherboard? It shouldn't keep falling out like that if the locks are properly in place.

Ive just recently purchased netgear's rangemax wireless router and adapter. Now while installing the router on the first computer was simple enough im having some pains with the other computer. The drivers specifically. Every time i try to install the drivers i get the same error msg at the end "windows cannot find the specified file". I have the original driver disk brand new. Its a usb hookup and i had trouble with another adapter i tried to hook up to it with the same problem. But just yesterday i was using another usb adapter and no problems. What is going on???

Answer:Help The Sky Is Falling!!!

How are you installing the driver; is it through Device Manager?

Try through Device Manager (Start>Run>type: devmgmt.msc >Enter), right-click the device>Update Driver and choose the "No" option on the first screen which'll let you specify the driver yourself. Point that to the disk and see how it goes.

I love this website! There is a wealth of information, but I don't know where to start exactly when it comes to fixing my problem. Could someone walk me through correcting the problem......which is, by the way, I don't really know. The first problems started happening after downloading the current version of FlashPlayer (11 something. Can't find the specifics any longer). World wide problem, so that probably isn't causing MY other problems, but thought I'd note it anyway. Still a problem though. Updater fails daily. Games in FB don't always work properly or are slow loading.I put a post in the network forum here and now my problems are on rapid fire. I'm not getting much help there, unfortunately. Post needs to be closed. Why? Because I'm starting to believe the problem lies else where. Here is the chain of events.1) network PCs and printer can't find each other2) followed post suggestions, ran mini-toolbox, posted results (desktop & laptop)3) printer isn't recognized via pinging, desktop WAS able to print, laptop couldn't4) uninstalled printer and associated programs5) DVD RW drive no longer worked -- tried to reinstall printer software & driver6) got stop error blue screen (STOP: 0x0000008E, 0xC0000005, Ox805E1CF2, 0xA7895818 & 0x00000000. Question: XP falling over

Has anyone else got this problem - if so can they sort it for me? If I double click, particularly when using Outlook or another Microsoft program, my screen blanks and then revert to the "users screen" which shows i am still logged in and my programs are still running. No damage or loss takes place, it's just inconvenient. I'm using standard Xp Home with no bells or buzzers. All advice considered - the people on the help line are still scratching their heads and saying, "We'll get back to you""

I must have done something to alienate XP - I can't recall what it was but I'll apologize to MS if only I can find a work-around should this happen again.

There were two accounts on my XP machine - Both were set as administrator - neither had passwords - I deleted one account - the system (upon reboot) requested a password - I had none to give it.

I was unable to find anything on the www. that adressed my problem.
I searched using another PC since I could not get past the welcome screen on the primary PC.

Failure - I reformatted - loosing some email and documents. Now that I am experienced with this situation...was there an easier way that does not violate your standards against cracking a password?

Answer:Falling on my sword...

Boot the PC into safe mode by tapping F8 while the computer boots. This will give you a menu to choose from.

Booting this way will allow you to login with the default Administrator account (which should have no password, unless you specifically set one).

I bought a HP envy two years ago and loved it from the moment I got it. Unfortunately one day I opened it up and there was a large crack on the screen. Thankfully this was an acknowledged problem and HP were quick to repair the laptop. Unfortunately the problem not only hasn't been fixed, it's gotten worse. It seems that the hinge on the left has completely separated from the casing and was breaking bits of the laptop every time it was opened or closed, including re-cracking the screen. I literally now cannot close the laptop for fear of causing worse damage, and the fan makes an ominous whirring noise every so often so I try to limit use. Is there any way to fix this or is the laptop essentially written off?

Answer:HP Envy falling apart!

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

I have a pretty good gaming rig (a64 3700+, 1GB RAM, 7800GT) and it has always worked perfectly. Then all of a sudden this afternoon I was playing WoW and the FPS drops to 1 FPS! Thought I might have a cooling problem but all the CPU, Case, and GFX temps are perfectly fine. I started to defrag my comp, and then my PC locked up! For the last 3 hours I havent been able to use my PC for more than 10 min tops without freezing! (I am writing this on another comp BTW).

Answer:Why is my computer falling apart?

PC lockups totally suck... I feel your pain. Start with your RAM. If you have some spare RAM or 2 sticks in dual channel take one of the sticks out and see what happens. Then start looking at your PSU voltages in your BIOS to see how stable they are.

My father gave me a Lenovo Y50-70 Notebook as a gift about 2 years ago. I had issues with the computer itself being very sharp around the edges to the point I received multiple lacerations on my fingers due to the razor edges. Lenovo was made aware and replaced my laptop with a different Lenovo Y50-70 about 6 months later. I was content with my computer up until recently when I merely opened my laptop and the left hinge broke completely off. My computer screen is currently hanging on by the right hinge only. My computer wires are exposed and the colors on my screen all have a green hue. My computer sits on my table and is used mainly for work. I have not dropped or abused my computer and from doing research, it appears that the hinges may have been too tight as multiple people have complained of the hinges breaking on the Lenovo Y50-70. Needless to say, this is not a product I would recommend to anyone.

My XP sp3 keeps peaking CPU and Failing back to little. I know the HD is fine but this problem has been going on for months.

Any help would be good and well receieved.

Answer:peaking and falling CPU

If I am understanding you...what you describe is the routine manner that the system is supposed to work.

When the system is taxed...CPU usage should increase, as evidence of activity beyond that which is beyond the range of not being asked to do certain tasks. The more tasks asked of the system at the same time...the more usage.

Opening/using certain programs should increase CPU usage, with the time for such increase being dependent on what the program is and what it is doing.

Example: If I open and use any of my video-editing programs and proceed to render/edit video...the usage will increase dramatically and reduce only when I have completed the edits/rendering...because those tasks are very intense on the system.

If I am not understanding...please provide more details so that others may be able to contribute their comments/thoughts.

I have a G50-45 notebook and 3 of the screws now have come out. I've never touched the screws, they keep coming out on their own. I looked in the user manual (no luck), and the lenovo support site wasn't even helpful. I just need to know what size to order replacements, because the right side of the laptop is coming apart and I'm afraid the disk driver or the screen is going to break. There is one different sized screw on the bottom that's labeled a metric 2 .4 x 6 mm, so  I ordered a set of those thinking that they would fit the other holes but they didn't (they were too small). Help is much appreciated, thanks.

Hey everyone.
My PC ( Dell Dimension 8400, only hardware modification is a different video card [which was installed 2-3 years ago]) was working pretty well until recently, when I switched hard drives. I had run out of space on my Maxtor 80 GB, so I had called up and had a Dell guide help me through the installation of a Western Digital 250 GB as a primary (wouldn't recognize with it as a secondary). I kept both hard drives running for a while until I got a trial of Bitdefender and it found viruses on my older secondary drive. I quarantined and deleted the files later, and unplugged the drive. Lately I've been scanning the PC with the latest version of free avast! antivirus and the trial of the current AVG Anti-Spyware (Ewido), deleting whatever files it finds. Now the problem is, despite a "malware"-free drive, the computer crashes constantly. Programs will freeze up leaving me with no choice but to manually shut down. The freezing will occur when I open up Windows Media, sometimes WinAmp, the internet (random times), and many other programs. I can't deal with it anymore, as it pops up at random times and is becoming more and more frequent. Help please?

Question: AP Rane Falling

I have been using a Cisco e1200 v1 for a few years. Recently our household has been doing more stuff outside on our 4 acre estate. So, as the household Network Admin, I switched from the stock firmware for dd-wrt v24-sp2 and up'd the TX power to 250 mW. Im not having a heat issue and for a while it covered the whole 4 acres. A couple of weeks ago the range fell to only covering the house. On the default dd-wrt page it says the power is 251mW, even though it is set in the Advanced Wireless settings to be 250mW. I have no idea how to fix this but need it fixed as we will be having family staying a couple of nights in their motor home on our property.

About two days ago my computer started acting weirdly. I got a blue screen twice when I tried to run some programs from an external drive. Thinking it was just a hardware problem I stopped using the drive. However, the next day a Spyware Doctor scan picked up a lot of malware infections, most notably a trojan that had copied itself all over my registry files.

My system's completely falling apart now, even as I type. It's doing some erratic stuff including:

-The formatting of webpages in firefox randomly becomes messed up, with text just vanishing or being replaced by underscores and black boxes appearing in the place of pictures (for example, the google logo is just a black box and the text on the search page is all gone or replaced by _).
-Spyware Doctor's UI freezes up randomly, usually when I try to view the history but other times it freezes right after it opens up. This has not affected the scanning, however; only the process that controls the UI.
-Norton Antivirus's auto-protect disabled itself all of a sudden and rtvscan.exe crashed due to a runtime error.
-Programs such as notepad and firefox can't run. The error message I receive says something about "insufficient system resources exist to complete the service."
-I am now constantly getting a message about insufficient quota when I try to run programs or open folders. The titlebar of the message says "Bad Image".
-explorer.exe is crashing constantly, followed and/or preceded by a... Read more

Question: Screws falling out

I got my Yoga 11s a little over a month ago.  I had a screw from the bottom fall out a couple weeks ago, but I was able to get it back in.  Now I am on vacation and it fell out again and I lost it.  Then a couple days later another one fell out.  Now there is a third one loosening up.  What could be causing this?  I have not dropped it or anything like that.  Also, where would be a common place to find a screwdriver to fit these screws?  The screws are torx, probably less than a 5T.  I would order a screwdriver online, but again, I am on vacation and would like to not worry about my computer falling apart.  Thanks!

Over the last few weeks a friend of mine has asked me several times if there's a way to glue keys back onto a keyboard. The keyboard in question is on a laptop, and she really needs it - hauls it around everywhere with her - and she can't afford to buy a new one just yet.

So far three keys have fallen off. I think she may have tried to superglue them back but it didn't work, they keep popping off.

I'm thinking she could maybe plug a separate USB keyboard into it for a while, but outside of that...

I haven't a clue
how to help her with glue

So, I told her I'd ask my clever friends at TSG and see if anyone else has a solution that might help her get a few more months of use out of her laptop.

Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time!

I suspect that I might be infected even though AVG, Malwarebytes, and Microsoft Security Essentials are telling me otherwise. Vista is falling apart on me and everything that I do to try to resolve the problem seems to be blocked by something.

I had a bad virus infection about 6 months ago. I think that I managed to successfully remove it with the help of several anti-virus programs. But recently my system has been acting strangely again:

1. The Windows firewall is disabled and I cannot start the service.

2. I lost all ability to print, and I cannot add a printer, not even print to pdf.

3. I can connect to the internet, but there is a dns problem or something. No browser can locate a url, and I cannot ping to a url though I can ping to a numerical ip address. I posted about this problem under the Windows Vista forum.

4. Sometimes when I run a virus scan, the computer will suddenly turn itself off ... just like the power has been cut.

The latest weirdness started today. I found a link on this site to Vista registry keys to help resolve the firewall problem. I ran the Farbar Services Scanner and found out which keys were missing. All went well and I added those keys. I couldn't start the firewall, but I didn't get the ugly error message that I got earlier ("Windows cannot display the Windows firewall settings due to an unknown error"). So I thought that I was making progress. I ran the Farbar Services Scanner again, and found out that some legacy keys we... Read more

About a month ago i had a win 8 update (im running 64bit), upon reboot the system got to bios splash screen but no further. Im not sure what the correct term is for when a pc gives up, its like u hit the power button and all fans stop etc, i call it 'falling over', maybe u can educate me to the correct term. Anyways it would do this, get to bios splash screen, no further and fall over, then restart by itself caught in an endless loop.
Hitting f12 with the wirless keyboard was erratic in success, a wired keyboard was more relaible.
I would enter the bios and manually set boot drive and all was fine, it would then load win 8, and as long as i didnt reboot no problems occured.

Then last sunday i gave the machine a shutdown for a couple of hours, upon restart it didnt even get to bios splash screen, it just fell over (without restart cycle).
My first thought was psu fault, so i happened to have a spare one lying around, albeit only 500w i tried but alas it was failing same point 1-3 secs into boot (pre bios splash screen).

I then stripped all peripherals out of the motherboard/case so only what was connected to the motherboard was psu, wired keyboard, monitor' ram and c drive (gfx card not connected).
This helped sumwhat in that i was able... Read more

I can understand your frustration. I am not a big expert on DIY rigs, although I am pretty competent at building them and getting them to work (see System Specs). Expert or not here is what I would do at this point given the limited amount I know about your mobo, etc. WRT to Flash, don't install an update at this time. Win8 likes the one it installs. On the clean install, I would start over making sure that you have only one partition. Use the partition feature on your install DVD. Before reinstalling, you could try repairing start up with your DVD, but I'd go for a complete do over. It doesn't take that long anyway. Once you have done the do over run the Win 8 upgrade assistant to see if it picks up any problems. Once you reconnect your hardware (including only 4 GB RAM for now) run it again. I was able to run the assistant without installing it. I didn't see the link to do so, but you could look a... Read more

So about a month ago I had my hard drive replaced, bc comp. guy said it had ran out. The problem that had led to that replacement was due to my computer refusing to load. It started with a week of my computer kicking me off internet explorer after every 30 mins of being on it. Then one day after all that it decided to not upload anymore. Whenever I turned the computer on I would get first black screen that asked to select operating systems, after I did it told me there was a hardware/software problem. It told me to restart using safe mode and a million other options, none worked. So comp guy replaced harddrive and that fixed problem. Since then the comp was running like new, until i tried plugging my ipod and camera onto comp. As soon i pluged in the ipod or computer to my computer it restarts the comp and refuses to load up as long as either the ipod or camera are connected. It takes me back to the problem I had before harddrive was replaced, doesn't let my comp load to desktop and stays on those first 2 black screens. As soon as i unplug the items , it goes back to normal and comp functions just fine. What can possibly be going on? Ive tried pluging the items through back and front ports and it does the same thing. Help please!

I bought an HP Envy m6 new, and have probably had it for less than two years. For some reason one of the hinges snapped, and the back of the casing in that corner popped out. I put tape around the corner for support, which worked for a few months, but now the other hinge has also snapped. This has caused the casing to start separating from that side as well. I now have a laptop with two broken hinges, casing that is falling apart, and a crack on one of the front bottom corners. I cannot afford to replace this laptop or spend a lot of money getting it repaired, and will be needing it for a distance learning course in 2016. I am disappointed at how fragile this laptop seems to be, as I was looking forward to many more years with it, and I don't think it will last much longer in its current condition. This puts me in a difficult situation as I use this laptop regularly, and rely on it being in good working order. I no longer feel I can open and close this laptop without causing significant damage, and am at a loss for where to go from here. Is there anything that can be done?Thank you.

Answer:My laptop is falling apart

Since it is out of the warranty period you will now have to pay someone to fix it. Nothing more anyone else can do here.

I've just about had enough of Vista!
but i need some help just to make me get along better with it...

The reason I'm falling out with it is because of the stupid security!
can you turn off the thing that says are you sure you want to start this program when you start it up like this:

That little sign!

Thanks in advance.

Answer:I falling out with Vista HELP!

Yeah, those security settings get a little annoying at times. If you just switched to Vista, I can understand your annoyance, but try to get used to it because it helps protect your computer.

The problem I had turning it off was that it showed an annoying red icon in my system tray screaming to turn it back on. I didn't know now to get rid of it, so I turned it back on so Vista would stop crying. I suppose you could hide it though.

Also, I think some programs may look for that security check and won't run properly without. Don't quote me on that but, I think I read that somewhere.

But, to turn it off go to Control Panel > Security > Security Center > Other Security Settings and turn the User Account Control (UAC) off. That should stop the annoyances.

Hope that helped

Hello, can someone please help me? When I try to sleep my computer (Start, Sleep) it goes to sleep. But then after a few seconds, the loud fan comes on and the computer comes back on and it says "Resuming Windows". Then it goes back to my desktop or whatever I had open before trying to Sleep.
I reformatted my computer and it still does this.
I looked up some fixes and it said to make sure the ethernet adapter and mouse are Unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer". I did that, but I still have the same problem.
Can someone please help?

I have 5 hard drives in my machine used for storage and I'm trying to get them to spin down when they are inactive but they just dont seem to do it.

I have disabled indexing and all the other bits I can think off but they just dont seem to stop.

Is there a way I can check whether they are or not? I dont get any lag time when I try and access them through Explorer which is what makes me think they aren't and I dont hear them spin up again.

If it makes a difference they are in a hard drive rack that has a SATA backplane to connect them. As far as I am aware this should just passthrough any commands to the disks and is essentially the same as just plugging them directly onto the m/board.

Any thoughts would be great, its driving me nuts.

anyhow, woke up to my computer restarted (i never turn it off) and i logged in to find a minidump

Now i made a thread a month or two ago about my new wireless card, and wondering if that could be it again

i also just updated my video card not to long ago, so im thinking that maybe it too, that way i can RMA it.

Any and all help is always appreciated. I do seem to have a BSOD once every 2 months, so its kinda rare, my computer usually runs in tiptop shape. thanks once again.

Hi myrockyboy and welcome to Tenforums.

Have you tried holding down the power button until it completely shuts off?

Then try this:

Unplug from power.
Remove battery (if laptop).
Press and hold the power button in, counting to 15 seconds.

Plug the system back in to the wall (replace battery as well), and try to boot.

p.s. please also make sure you are using a good plug - put a nightlight or lamp into it and make sure it's working.

Question: Won't stay asleep

Each time I try to activate the sleep mode, it lasts for only a few seconds before the PC pops back to life again. Coincidentally or not, this only started happening after I installed SP1.

Answer:Won't stay asleep

J. Brian -

For what it is worth, I have the same problem on my Vista and new Dell PC with SP1 installed. However, in my case, I think my problem has always been there, even prior to installing SP1.

I contacted Dell for help and the tech took me through every conceivable fix and nothing worked. The tech finally left me with the fact she will do more research and is suppose to contact me with what she finds. However, I am not counting on her to recontact me.

Question: Monitor Asleep

I have a PC running XP and a wide screen monitor. Sometimes (often) when I boot up the monitor will go black after a few seconds. Turning the monitor off and back on again cures it, but a few seconds later it goes black again.Reboot again and it's okay. What might be causing this and what's the cure?

Answer:Monitor Asleep

Hi, usually, if there is a problem with the computer/graphic card/cable, the monitor will display a 'No signal' error. The fact that you merely have a black screen suggests you may have a defective monitor. Try using a different monitor to either confirm or eliminate the monitor as the cause of the problem.CRT or LCD monitor?exo

Question: Monitor asleep

I finished building my new rig, and everything works fine, except that when I turn on the computer, the monitor does not turn on.

I have a Hyundai L90D+. It works just fine with my old computer (that's what I am typing with now).

I cannot even manually turn on the monitor. The damn thing just wouldn't turn on.

Everything else runs fine, because I can hear the OS loading and the audio feedback is fine.

Every ten boots, the monitor would turn on.

I changed all sorts of settings on BIOS, but nothing works.

Any ideas?

The strangest thing is that the problem is intermittent.

If I press the reset button, sometimes the monitor would turn on, but most of the times not.

What the heck?

EVGA support thinks it may be a defective gfx card.

It's rare that a company would own up to its own faulty component.

I thought they would blame the mobo or the monitor.

Anyone who knows how i could use the computer with external keyboard and screen mouse ect. please let me know. Maybe a dock would work well but i dont know please let me know if anyone knows a soulotion.

P.S. I dont have the 700m yet but I want to know if using external accesories were possible while the computer was in sleep mode?????

Answer:Using Laptop while asleep?

I think you are mixed up about something. Just because your laptop has the screen completely closed does not mean it will automatically go into sleep mode or shut down. I would HATE that. I close my laptop lid all the time when i use it, whenever I put it down for a minute or stuff like that. You can configure your laptop to do whatever you want when you close the lid. For example, I have mine just do nothing. I believe this option is available when you right click the desktop and go to properties and then its on one of the tabs, with the rest of the power management stuff. The screen automatically goes off though, due to a physical switch, which is perfect. You could then use a desktop keyboard, mouse, and monitor with your closed laptop... I think this is what you're going for.

Question: Monitor Asleep!

My monitor was put into "sleep" mode while a cd was in the drive. After rebooting & leaving off over night, the monitor still will not come up. When switched on, the green lights come on the tower & monitor. Before the monitor comes up, I hear a click and it immediately goes to sleep and the green light turns orange. Any help??? Thank you!!!

Answer:Monitor Asleep!

Not sure what computer you have but you can try this if all else fails.. Unplug computer... Open it up and find the Cmos battery and pull it out.. hold it for a while 60 seconds is good then put it back.. Boot up computer and enter cmos and chose restore defaults... save and exit. You may have to go back into Cmos to put come things back in order but that should get the monitor fixed.. You may want to try the monitor on another computer to be sure it works.. I banged my head for two weeks on one that could not handle the high refresh rates of my computer but worked good on the kids computer....

My wife has a table top computer with windows XP and we hooked her computer back up and the lights come on, on the tower but the screen tells her she is in power save mode. The drives work, the fan is on for the power supply, the tower acts as if it is functioning, but if you use the mouse or press any key nothing happens on the monitor, the monitor goes into a sleep mode and tells you, your in power save mode.
We have double checked every connection, unpluged and pluged back in and tried new cables and powered up and down, nothing will wake it up, Its like the computer is in sleep mode and will not wake up. Anyone have any help how to wake it up, please.

Answer:XP is asleep and will not wake up - Help

When you cannot get a computer out of "power save mode" by any other means, typically the cause is that the button-cell-type battery of your computer, which is located on the motherboard, is empty.

Usually, this happens on a computer which is a few years old, since its batteries will have run out after such a long time. (The motherboard battery is used to store various settings when the computer power is off, such as date and time. When your computer detects this battery is empty, it goes into a low-power mode).

The solution is to replace the button-cell battery on the motherboard of your computer:

- open the case of your computer;
- visually locate the motherboard (the main electronic circuit board) of your computer;
- visually scan the motherboard for a button-cell battery (it looks like a digital watch battery, but a bit larger);
- remove this motherboard battery from your computer;
- restart your computer: it should now power up normally (you may get some warning messages during the start-up sequence, but ignore them);
- set the date and time of your computer using the "Date and Time" control panel;
- you can now use your computer normally, but you will lose date and time settings when you disconnect the computer power cord, since there is no motherboard battery present to store them;
- take the motherboard battery to an electronics store and get a replacement;
install the new battery in your computer;
- restart your computer, and set the date and t... Read more
