Function key Issue on Satellite L70-B-119

Question: Function key Issue on Satellite L70-B-119

I have an Satellite L70-B-119 and recently after a trip abroad my function keys have reverted to standard use instead of function which they were set at. I have tried changing this in system settings but nothing seems to work.

Any help or suggestions please ?

Preferred Solution: Function key Issue on Satellite L70-B-119

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Function key Issue on Satellite L70-B-119

To be honest I don't know what do you man but what I know is that you can change between special and standard mode.
I send you screenshot where you can change it.

If I have misunderstood your question please be nice and explain exactly what do you mean.

Hello, I am new to this forum so please bear with me if I am in error.

I have just bought a Satellite A100-049 and inadvertently pressed the F10 key. The LED below the key illuminated and I discovered to my horror that I could not type certain letters and, worse, I could not turn off F10, whatever that is! I eventually had to restart.

I can see what F1 to F9 do from the drop down list at the top of the screen, but I cannot work out what F10, F11 and F12 do, and am in constant fear of pressing them again! The handbook and Toshiba web site don't seem to offer any help, although it is probably because I don't know where to look.

Can any of you kind experts out there fill me in?

Many thanks,

Answer:Function keys issue on a Satellite A100-049

Hi there,

maybe I know how to resolve your problem. Try to press "Fn+F10" (Hold Fn and press F10 at the same time).
Then your keyboard should work properly again.
Maybe you pressed a key combination (e.g. "Fn+F10") and then the alternate keypad on your keyboard was activated.

Please give some feedback if my hint helped you.

Question: Function Key Issue

Hmmm... oddly enough, we have a wonderful yellow lab that chewed up part of my keybord - no joke. I got a new one from Dell and was able to replace it. It works perfectly except for one thing. My function key - which I rely on heavily - won't do anything. I searched for help but to no avail. Anyone know what the issue may be? Thanks

Answer:Function Key Issue

The keyboard is probably a different model, so you don't have the driver for it. It should have come with a CD-ROM that has drivers. If not, you can look at the model number (probably on a sticker on the back) and go to Dell's site and download it from there.

The F11 key where I can switch the sound on/off doesn't work!
The other keys are working fine.

Anybody knows how to give back it's function?

Answer:Satellite Pro C50 A-153: F11 function key does not work

Are you using the ?Special function mode? or ?Standard F1-F12 mode??
The ?special function mode? allows you to use special functions without pressing the FN key.
This means that if special function mode is enabled, you need to press only F11 to turn the sound on and off. In case the special function mode is disabled, you have to press FN+F11 to turn the sound on and off.

You can enable or disable the special function mode in:
Desktop -> Desktop Assist (in task bar) -> tools & utilities -> Function key

But I'm wondering if the F11 button works using other software?
For example: pressing F11 button while using Internet browser (internet explorer) should enable the Full-screen mode. Can you check this?

Maybe the F11 keyboard button is faulty and therefore the sound ON/Off function does not work

I have had this problem for a while, and I wondered if anyone had any suggestions to fix this.

I have a more or less working Satellite Pro 4270 (4200 Series) laptop, with XP on it.

The USB does not work. I do not know why it does not work. I have tried replacing the USB module on the motherboard that has not worked. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version, not worked. Deleted and reinstalled the drivers in XP, not worked. I am out of ideas.

IrDA works fine.

Some suggestions please. Thanks

Answer:Satellite Pro 4270 - USB does not function

Have I understood right, have you been soldering the USB module out from the mobo and then soldering another module in?

Or, what have you done with the USB module, replacing it? Sorry, I do not remember exactly how the USB module was connected to my SP4270 mobo seen last some half a year ago ... If soldering, I wouldn't wonder the problem ... but if not, maybe there is some solution ...

Best regards,

Pete V.

I've got a Satellite L25-S1215. I can't get the Function key to unlock. Tried using the utilities, but no option to disable the FN keys (I'll never use them). Initially, laptop boots up and I'm able to log in to windows, but there after, the function key turns itself on and won't shut off.

I had a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, but have uninstalled the keyboard for troubleshooting, didn't fix it. I've searched the forums, and found nothing.

Answer:Satellite L10-119 does not function properly

that sounds like a hardware problem. I mean if you didn?t install anything or if no one poured (for example) some liquids over the machine then the mainboard could be defective.

The problem is that the machine is probably out of warranty and you will have to pay for a repair. But if you anyway would like to keep the machine for a longer time then check the following link and contact a ASP (Authorized Service Partner) for a hardwarecheckup or repair:

Sorry mate, but I think your machine is gone to heaven. :(

I can switch it off or on from the BIOS, but that kind off defeats the purpose.

Hi Colin_B,

Is the WLAN card recognized properly in device manager or there is yellow exclamation mark? The newest WLAN driver can be downloaded here:

Generally speaking for FN key combinations the Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility must be also installed and can be downloaded on official Toshiba page.

I just recently experienced an issue with my usb keyboard, but now i notice that my mouse isn't working normal either.
The functions on my keyboard have switched. Example: When i try typing a web address in the search engine, I'll press the H key and it will bring up the history tab. And other keys will bring up other things. However, My CTRL ALT DELETE works. I lso noticed with my mouse that when i have a minimized window that i can't just click it to maxamize, i need to right click and the click on maxamize. The only key that appears to be performing is the spacebar. I've tried plugging in a different keyboard and the problem still persists. I did use the mouse and keyboard with my laptop before plugging them back into my desktop, i dont know if that would have an effect on its function or driver.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all,

I have had many happy years using my Toshiba laptop without problem. The operating system is Vista Home Plus.

About a year ago, my son dropped the machine, which resulted in the display cracking. In order to keep using it I plugged in a spare mouse and keyboard, and linked it up to a flat bed monitor.

Using Fn+F5, it has worked perfectly as a defacto desktop for ages until relatively recently: the cable linking the laptop and the monitor became detached which resulted in the monitor going into sleep mode. When reattached, the display did not return and I have had persistent problems ever since. Using the F5 key now has no effect.

Points of note

- as the machine powers up, the external monitor displays the usual text, but when the Windows logo appears, it reverts to sleep mode and the laptop continues to boot up cleanly.

- when I boot up in safe mode the F5 key functions perfectly

- I have cured the proble previously by booting up in safe mode and restoring back to to a checkpoint taken a few days prior. This is a temporary fix, as whenever the machine is powered down it reoccurs. What is interesting though is that there always seems to have been a recent Windows Automatic update downloaded when I look at the list of recent system checkpoints and what triggered them!

Getting thoroughly fed up with the whole thing now. Any help very much appreciated.

Answer:Satellite Pro M - F5 Function Key no longer working

It?s really not easy to say what the reason is for this problem but it would be interesting to know what notebook you have exactly.
Can you add this information, please?

Anyway, at the moment I would recommend to update the display driver and BIOS. Both you can find on the Toshiba website: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

Before you start the BIOS update close all running background programs, also your antivirus and firewall. You should be logged in as administrator.
Furthermore I would recommend removing the old display driver before you install the newest one. After removing restart the notebook and clean it using CCleaner. Restart again and install the newest version.

I hope this can solve your issue and by the way: Have you installed SP for Vista?

Hello, I have recently downgraded my Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 from Vista to WindowsXP. Everything is working fine except the function (Fn) keys for controlling screen brightness, volume. Some work like mute but most do not do anything when I try to use them. All drivers installed fine the device manager shows nothing missing or errors.

I have tried installing all the drivers for the keyboard, Fn keys, hotkeys and still I cannot get them to work at all. Has anyone been able to get these keys to work after installing WinXP or do you know what drivers/software I am missing? Can these keys be used in XP or do they only work in Vista?

Answer:Satellite Pro L50-A - function keys not working

Hi Dang

Every new notebook with preinstalled original recovery image (operating system) has preinstalled right drivers, tools and utilities so I?m really wondering you cannot use function keys.
Have you noticed some problem with certain keys or with al F keys?

You can try to fix it installing Toshiba system driver and Toshiba function key utility but my opinion is that you should, if possible, reinstall OS using HDD recovery option. After doing this notebook will have ?factory settings? again and everything should be OK again.

Please check if you can change the settings regarding the special function key mode in the BIOS.
Usually this option allows you to use the function keys without pressing the FN button.

Play around with this setting and don?t forget to save the changes in BIOS.

Furthermore ensure that BIOS is already up to date and the VAP was installed properly.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and very much in need of help. I'm not sure how long it's been since I bought my Laptop (probably 3 years) but last night I had decided to open it since my CD/DVD Drive wasn't working (because I had dropped it). It wasn't hard to fix it but then I thought I best open it further to clean out some dust. When I had finished, I put everything back, pressed the power button and for some reason it wouldn't turn on. So, I opened it again and:

Image 1
Image 2
Image 3
Image 4
Image 5

As you can see (in image 5) the teeth on it have been broken. I think I tried to force it or something (it was 2am) and broke the teeth.
I know it can't be fixed so what I want to know is if I can buy that part somewhere?

Answer:Satellite P100-434 - Where to buy an Function Button FFC

All parts could be ordered from Toshiba ASP (authorized service point) in your country.
I think if some parts are not available then the ASP could order it from the Toshiba directly.

So in your case you should simply contact the guys and should ask for the needed parts.

Here you can find the nearest ASP: -> Support & Download -> Find an Authorized Service Provider

Hi Sanka_2,

Yes, there is a workaround here in forum for FN keys if you install VMware... As far as I can remember you have to change or delete some registry keys.

Anyway, FN keys are controlled by Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility. In your case I would recommend the reinstallation of these tools. That means remove the old versions, restart the computer and install newest versions from official Toshiba page.

What is original fab?
What have you installed exactly? Have you used the original Toshiba recovery disk?

Well, I think if a single key doesn?t work there is not much what you can do expect exchanging the keyboard because single keys are not replaceable.

What you can try is testing the situation with an external keyboard. Can you use the Windows key properly?
If yes the internal keyboard is malfunctioning and should be replaced from an authorized service provider they can order original Toshiba spare parts.

So, I've posted this a couple of days ago on the "Tools & Utilities" board, but haven't gotten any answers yet, so maybe I should be more patient. But, since this board seems to be slightly more active, I thought I'd try it here as well. Who knows, maybe some people with a Satellite S have experienced the same thing!

I've looked for an answer on google and on this forum for days, but haven't been able to find anything useful (especially in combination with 'windows 10', I have no idea if installing it had any effect in this).

I installed Windows 10 last week, and I'm not sure if that's when the "problem" started, but since yesterday I've been aware of the fact that the "special function modus" of the F-keys (i.e. the function in which you don'thave to hold the funtion key to access the special functions under the (former) F-keys) doesn't work any longer.

I've already tried:
- Restarting my system
- System Settings > Keyboard > Function key modus (but that was set correctly!).
- Tried any combination of Fn with any other key possible.

So I don't know what the problem is. Could it have something to do with the installment of Windows 10?

Preinstalled with Windows 8.1, upgraded to Windows 10 Home last Tuesday

Thanks to anyone who can help me!

Answer:Satellite S50-B-14M - Function key and F-keys switched

I solved it myself! Turned out I just needed another obvious solution: reinstall the function key utility driver. Why didn't I think of that before...

I read there are some problems with updating drivers in Windows 10, so that was most likely the problem: the function key utility driver wasn't installed properly after the installment of Windows 10.

When I bought this laptop (Toshiba Satellite) It came with Vista preloaded on it. I was having lots of problems with it and I installed Windows XP on my computer. Now, when I go on MSN or whatever, there isn't any icon for the webcam option there to click on. So I looked online for the driver, but I'm not entirely sure that it is the right one. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A200 -AH3 (Or so it says on the bottom of the laptop) and my webcam has worked when I had Vista. My current OS is Windows XP Professional. So, do I have the wrong drivers, or what's wrong? Can someone please help me? Thanks in advance

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Webcam won't function

Hi Mate,

Welcome to BC. Is your webcam built in or separate one. Anyways first find the manufacturer of it. Start-->computer(right click)--->Manage-->Device mananger-->Find the webcam here-->(right click)properties-->select properties. In the note the four digits following DEV and VEN.

Type them in the and then look for proper drivers.

Hi All,

I have an Satellite C70D-A-11D ... when I use once the FN Key to do a Print Screen or use the Screen-Zoom on the Space Key...

I am not able to use the Keynumbers 1 to 4 neither the space Key to enter a space between two always change between the bigger screen solution or the normal solution...

I only can change the FN Key again after change the settings in Display settings and after a reboot...
So I cant use FN without a reset with the F1 to F12 Key use and a reboot...

Normaly the FN Key works only if it is pressed...if not the normal Function of the Keys 1 to 4 or F1 to F12 will work if configured in the settings, or not?

What to do?

Kind regards

Answer:Satellite C70D-A-11D Function Key deactivate after use

First of all you can change between the special function key mode (without pressing FN key) or normal (standard) mode (Hold Fn first to use standard F1-F12 functions.)

This function can be changed in BIOS.
In BIOS go to Advanced -> System configuration

Check this option.

Hello All,

I have a old M30-107 which i recently reinstalled and updated the OS on.
The Function keys controling the screen brightness, volume etc do not seem to be working.
I believe I have updated all the drivers for the laptop.

Is there a specific driver ( ie chipset driver pack) I should be looking at that controls these function keys or should they work with out ant intervention from driver packs etc bios related???

Sat M30-107 XPHome edition SP3

Thanks in advance.. C.

Answer:FN function keys don't work - Satellite M30-107

Satellite M30-107 is a part of the PSM30E series. Is it right?
You could check this number if you would look at the bottom of the unit. There should be a label with such model number.

Go to the Toshiba European driver page and search in ARCHIVE area.

Choose +Archive -> Satellite -> Satellite M series -> Satellite M30 -> Win XP+

You have to download the *Common Module*

This Common Modules must be installed at first!!!
Then you need to install additional software like Touch Pad On/Off Utility, Hotkey Utilities for Display Devices.

These programs will enable the Fn buttons

Hello together,

i have been using nice nice device now since a few weeks and starting to get troubles with it.

I have the problem that randomly the touchscreen get without any function, i can touch the screen
however i want but without any reaction.

It just starts without starting any applications or anything before, i just browsing in the web and from one second to another.

If i restart the PC, everything is working normal again, i still using the drivers that were pre-installed and did not any changes to the Drivers so far.

Any suggestions what could cause this issue ?

Kind Regards

Answer:Satellite U920T-10G - touchscreen without any function

In my opinion an process which controls the touchscreen hangs or does not response anymore and therefore you cannot get the touchscreen function to work.

Would recommend to reinstall the +Toshiba System Driver+ from Toshiba EU driver page.
If this does not help try the system recovery and test the unit with factory settings.

Hey all

i installed XP a few weeks back and updated the bios to the xp version
I didn't like it and i went back to vista but now my function doesn't work.

I press it and press the screen brightness key but the controls don't show up anymore and i have to manually use it with my mouse or through the mobility center
is it because of the bios? I downloaded the new vista bios and now it says that rom space is full and quits

What do i do? Help much appreciated

Answer:Satellite A200-1AX function key not working

The problem is that you need to update the BIOS to the XP version if you want to use all the notebook features on this notebook.
After the installation of XP you have to update the BISO XP and then you have to install all the available Toshiba XP drivers and utilities.

This should helps.

Did you take a look on the Toshiba European driver page?
Check this path: -> Support & Download -> Download Drivers

In your case I would recommend installing the Common Module firstly, then Toshiba Controls, Hotkey Utilities for Display Devices and Utilities.

Have a P200-144 Notebook. Did a clean install from Vista home premium to vista ultimate.
When pressing FN & F5 I have no options available to use external.

Any help appreciated. Installed the latest nvidia driver today.

Answer:S-Video function not available on Satellite P200-144

first uninstall the Nvidia drivers. Thats the worst thing you could do. The original nvidia drivers do not fit to mobile graphics chipsets. Use rather the Omegadrivers (,
the are standard up-to-date nvidia drivers with modified inf files for mobile computers.

The other thing is, to get the FN-F5 functionnality back, download the "FN-F5-Tool" (or called displayswitch tool) from the toshiba website and install it to your machine.
It should work. :)

If you got any further questions - just ask ;)

I recently bought a Satellite L50-C-20W with Windows 10. The default behavior of the function keys is the functions like volume, toggle WiFi, etc.\
To use F1, F2 etc. one should press the FN button. Very annoying when not used to it. Always dimming the display when I want to edit field (F2).

How to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Toggle function key / FN permanent on Satellite L50-C-20W - Win 10

Hi Theo,
start START > All Apps > TOSHIBA > System Settings.
Select [Function Keys], there you find the options [SPECIAL KEY MODE] and [NORMAL KEY MODE].
With NORMAL KEY MODE (F1-F12), the normal F1...F12 functions are activated without pressing the [FN] key first.

Pls don't mind if the naming of the options differs a bit, i have translated it, because i have got a German system installation.

Hope i could help, Dieter

how come there is no colour when i switch to the tv?

Answer:Satellite A50 .No colour when u switch to tv function

there can be more than 1 reason:

The most common reason is that the machine shows the TV signal in NTSC-format while the TV itself is built / set to PAL (or vice versa). Please check the videodriver to see if that setting is there.

If Your using an S-video connection to the TV and need a converter to connect that cable to the TV, it is also possible that the TV itself is not fully compatible with that signal-type. It could result in an black&white experience. It should normally not be the case though if the TV is new.

All this is assuming that the cabling You use are correct in all respects of course!

Hope this helps

hi all...
yes i'm new here, but have been reading all over the internet regarding the issue i'm about to post. (including several topics here in this forum). nothing seems to fit exactly, and the possible suggested fixes just don't hit me as something i'm either willing or competent enough to try.

i left for work one morning, and all was fine on my brand spanking new Dell PC. (like a week old lol). 12 hours later, my desktop had holes where shortcut icons used to be. poof...vanished...gone.

in one thread, (and forgive me if i don't recall sn's of the posters, but i've read so dang much it's all pretty much mooshed together by now), it was mentioned that this is a normal function of Win7, system maintenance. that if there are more than four broken shortcuts, a system tool vaguely related to old desktop cleanup wizard just automatically removes them. ok... i can find and kill that....maybe.
problem is...none of the shortcuts were broken.

they all were shortcuts to different things too. so the possible solution of "reinstall the program" doesn't fit. i rarely allow installations to drop shortcuts to my desktop, but sometimes find later that it would be faster and handy to have one, so i go set one. (going to program files, setting "send to" from the app's .exe) .
nothing seems, in my case, to fit across the board.

one short was directly to My Documents (only one ID/user account set for this machine).
one shortcut was to a simple .txt file ... Read more

On the place, it is the functions F1, F2, F3 etc. who set off. I have just installed Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit, got the ISO from Microsoft MSDN Academic.

I also downloaded Toshiba Upgrade Assistant from the Support Page and it has installed almost everything, drivers and software from Toshiba (for my Satellite R830-16K).

But some function Keys does not work. Fn + F6 or F7 (brightness) simply does not work. Other function Keys appears to be working as normal. I have uninstalled and re-installed "Toshiba Value Added Package" and "Toshiba Function Key". Also, the Function Key program doesn't allow to configure the brightness keys (F6/F7).

Any ideas? Anybody could help me, please?

Thank you!

Answer:Satellite R830-16K - Function Keys (Fn) on Windows 8.1

The Toshiba EU driver page provides the Win 8 upgrade package.
It?s for Win 8 and NOT for Win 8.1
Therefore some tools and utilities could not work properly.

But listen: If you are using Win 8 (not quite sure about Win 8.1) very important is the installation of Toshiba System Driver.
Such Toshiba System driver can be found on Toshiba driver page too.

By the way: ensure that display driver is installed

I'm submitting the same report I sent to support but reposting here in case i don't get a helpful solution.

Yesterday, I reset my Toshiba Satellite C55-A5310 (Part #PSCF6U-0EF066 Serial #9D362065Q). It was factory reset, then had Windows 10 reinstalled automatically. After restarting, my special function keys were set back to normal F1-12 function and found no way to change them. Toshiba settings were removed after the reset (not my doing), so I searched in my BIOS settings, but found no keyboard options available, then reinstalled any possible drivers necessary to change them back (Toshiba Service Station and HW Setup). HW Setup provided the option to use special functions or default Fn settings but after choosing special keys, apply, and ok - nothing changed. I ran the program as administrator and still no changes.
Being only 16 years old with only a basic understanding of computer functions I please ask for any simple solutions that don't require any sort of "hacking" or adjusting permissions (which made me reset in the first place) or editing the registry. I'm way too scared to do that again and ruin any functioning of my laptop!

Answer:Satellite C55-A5310 - Special Function Key not working

There should be a Special Function key setting in the BIOS.

HW Setup is for Win7. Toshiba System Settings replaces it, you must have Toshiba System Driver installed for it to work. Sounds like you may have installed Win7/8 drivers/utils in Win10.

Answer:Satellite L450-136 - Scrolling function lost

The virtual scrolling function is controlled by touchpad driver. So probably you have changed some touchpad settings?!
You can check the scrolling function in touchpad driver (control panel > mouse > Advanced).

Furthermore you can try to reinstall the whole touchpad driver. Have a look on Toshiba website to download it:

Please advise and direct me to any resource that expands on the process if available. Thanks

Answer:Satellite L675D - Function of the primary partitions

I don?t know what you mean exactly but fact is that the first partition C: contains the operating system (Windows 7) and all programs that you have installed on this drive and saved data.

The second partition usually contains a folder called ?HDDrecovery? to restore the original out of box settings as described in your user manual. It has nothing to do with new software that you can install.

For example you can use the second partition to save your own files like photos, videos, music, etc. and install new programs only on first partition.

Can anybody tell me if this notebook has a touchpad with scroll-function?
And if, only page down or also "left to right"?

Answer:Satellite L500-164 - Does the touchpad has scroll function?

Yes, the Satellite L500 supports virtual scrolling.

But therefore you need the touchpad driver, this feature is software based as on other notebook. It?s not a problem because the driver is already preinstalled and additionally you can download it on the Toshiba page. :)

Have fun with a new Satellite L500. Friend of me bought it too and it?s really great and the price is also good.

I would like to completely disable on/off function to laptop lid switch of Satellite P100 series.

I have set on/off power button to 'hibernate'. ANd use Fn F3 for Stand By.
When full shut down/reboot is required, I use 'Start' on desktop. I nearly always use hibernate.

I have noticed that whether or not I am running on AC OR Battery, the panel power remains functional. I have been forced to completely shut down laptop when carrying it in a bag because one time (in hibernation) the lid switch had moved in my laptop bag, and after an hour or so, the machine had been running and getting very warm and draining the battery - waiting for me to enter the bios password.

I want to be able to hibernate, and know the lid switch will not start up the laptop. - I've tried but -control panel/power options/advanced does not disable lid on 'open'.

Maybe this is not possible ?

Answer:Satellite P100: How to disable on/off function of Lid switch

Hello Robert

As far as I know something like this can not be disabled. If you do not use your notebook for longer time it is maybe better to shut it down because the startup time is not much longer than after waking up from hibernation mode.

We can just speculate why your notebook was suddenly ON. I presume LCD lid somehow has been moved and the notebook ?thinks? that display is opened. The result is wake up from hibernation mode.

Fn buttons are controlled by Flash Card Support Utility.

The error window comes out every time I insert the empty disc and click the dvd rom icon.

Because it's a dvd/RW rom, usually I can just open it and drag any file I want onto the disc, and then burn it easily.

Any solutions?

Answer:Satellite M200 FN Function not working after downgrade to XP

First of all I have to say that the Satellite M200 cannot be a Toshiba European notebook model.
I didn?t find any Toshiba XP drivers on the Toshiba European driver website.

Possibly it?s Toshiba US notebook series or Toshiba Australian notebook model?.

However, I think the FN buttons don?t work on Win XP because the right driver is missing and not installed (common modules, etc?) or the BIOS does not support the XP fully.

I noticed a similar issue on a A200 notebook. After XP installation the FN buttons didn?t work? but after the BIOS XP version update I get the FN functionality back?

So both is possible?
I don?t know if an BIOS update especially for the Win XP is available but you could check it? if it?s not available then you have to use the notebook without the FN buttons functionality.

Hi I have a Toshiba Satellite L350 Laptop with Windows XP Professional. I have no idea if I am in the right category but here is my issue. I can not activate any of my function keys. This is very problematic because the function key turns on the switch for the laptops WIFI, I can not connect to the internet through WIFI without it. According to the Toshiba forums it is a driver issue related to the TVAP (Toshiba Value Added Package). I have tried downloading the drivers from Toshiba's sight but none seem to open correctly. I think I need to delete the TVAP currently on my laptop but have no idea how to do this. Again my guesses above are summations from 4 hours of reading forums from other sights. I honestly have no idea what is wrong and inherited this laptop from a family member 2 days ago, in an attempt to allow me to work from home to help me with meeting a deadline for work. Anyone familiar with this issue your help would be greatly appreciated.

If you use the Vista OS then you should firstly check if the Toshiba FlashCards are enabled. This tool is connected with the FN + F1-F9 button functionality.

If the Flashcards are already enabled then you should try to reinstall the Toshiba Vista Value added package.

After installing a new HD and using restore disks and updating to XP sp2, the wireless will not function and if the card is installed XP hangs then runs in spurts. If the card in not in place, no difficulty at all.

Booting from a Linux CD, the card works perfectly! I thus assume the driver is the problem. The wireless card is the original, an Agere MPC13A-20/R, with Toshiba p/n PA317U-1MPC.

I've found some Agere drivers but am unsure

1) if they are correct
2) how to install them since the machine functions in a limited fashion with the card in place.

Any advice?

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100 wireless will not function after HDD restore

I have checked the driver page and the only available WLan driver for the Windows XP is the Agere v.1.11.108 driver.

1) Try simply to install this driver. If the driver is not correct or not compatible then windows will not install the driver and you will get a notification. So simply try?

2) Usually you could reinstall the driver from the device manager. There you have to open the network controller tree and then you could reinstall the driver.

But this is only possible if the windows has booted properly?

P.S: Did you check the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Update information on the Toshiba driver page.
I found out that you have to update several utilities if you have installed the SP2 on this notebook.

Hi All,
I tried flashing my BIOS through windows as recommended on my Laptop Manufacturer (Toshiba) website. I guess the process went wrong as after 2 hours still the message "Do not interrupt" was getting displayed. I had to force power off my PC. Now it is not booting up.
The Laptio is Toshiba SA50-114, Satellite series.Model No - PSA50E

I have tried suggestions in following link
However, this did not work.

However, I don't have the recovery disk tool and BIOS/ROM file. Have tried searching on internet, but with no results.

Can someone please help me with
1. How can I perform the BIOS update to get my PC running back.

2. Point me to links where I can find the files in the above link.

Many Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,

Answer:Satellite A50 doesn't function after BIOS update

> 1. How can I perform the BIOS update to get my PC running back.
Not possible if your BIOS ROM module was wrong flashed.
If you are a lucky man then only the ROM module must be flashed again using an special procedure. But this can be done only by an authorized service provider in your country.

> 2. Point me to links where I can find the files in the above link.
There is no link! You will have to ask the ASP for the help.

I have an L350-20G.
Is it possible to get the funcion buttons at the top of the laptop (play/pause; stop; back; forward) to work with iTunes?

Answer:Satellite L350-20G - Can I use the function buttons for iTunes?

As far as I know you can only configure the first button which starts the application (iTunes).
The other buttons that you mean like play, stop and pause can?t be configured. There is no Toshiba tool for this available.

I don?t use iTunes but in WinAmp you can configure the button functionality but I don?t know if iTunes allows you to customize these settings too.
Try it and post your result. :)

Does this model have WiFi capability and if so how do I turn it on?

Answer:I can't turn on the Wireless function on my Satellite C50D-A

It is not known to me that there is one single Toshiba notebook model without WLAN and I must also say that Toshiba offers user?s manuals document for each model so all important info you can find there.

I don't have this notebook model but try please to disable airplane mode using F12 or FN+F12.

I have a P870-335 in which I placed a SSD disk and installed Windows 8 Pro (now 8.1) and was able to get most devices working with the drivers that I found by the Toshiba autodetect program.

However one of the items still missing is that I can not see/control the functions that are on the Function keys, (like swichting Bluetooth/Wireless). I know from my previous Toshiba laptop that at the moment I press the Fn key I see a OSD that show me the options and the status of them.

I cant find which software I have to install in order to restore this functionality. Somebody got a hint/link for me?
Assume that this software is also available for Windows 8(.1) Pro?

Thanks in advance, Herbiek.

Answer:Satellite P870-335 - Function key actions not visible

For Win7 Toshiba has created Toshiba Value Added Package. This package included several tools and utilities and one of them was important for FN+Fx keys functionality.
Now Toshiba uses two other tools:
Toshiba System driver and Toshiba Function Key Utility.

I?ve checked Toshiba download page -
You can find them there.

Check it out please.

Is there a way I can turn off the zoom function on my touchpad.
It's very annoying when it continuously changes zoom.

Answer:Satellite C50-B - How to disable touchpad zoom function?

Go to control panel -> mouse
Here you should check the last tab.

The name of this last tab depends on the touchpad driver which is installed on your notebook.
There are two possibilities: either its ELAN or Synaptics driver

In case your notebook supports ELAN touchpad, go to ELAN tab.
Now you will see new ELAN Smart Pad window providing 3 tabs: One finger, Multi finger, Additional
Choose ?Multi-finger tab? and disable the option called Zooming.

I recently Reinstalled Windows on my Laptop because of a Virus. As i was done with instaling drivers i saw that the Fn-Key and the Softkeys did not work any longer. So i was looking for the reason and discoverd that some drivers would not install properly. Is it because i now have 32bit instead of 64bit?

Is there a version for 32Bit? And which driver is the one for the Fn-Key and Softkeys?

Ch S

Answer:Function Keys of Satellite P775-11P do not work

>Is there a version for 32Bit?
Sorry mate but have you checked which operating systems are supported before you?ve started OS installation?
I?ve checked Toshiba download page on and Win7 64bit version is supported only.

Do you have recovery discs? Install original OS that you got with your notebook?

I am using a Satellite P750. There is a row of "Function Buttons" between my keyboard and the display screen. These buttons no longer work.

The biggest problem with this is that I can't seem to activate my wireless. When my ether net cable is not plugged in, it usually detects wireless networks that i can connect to. now it doesn't detect any of the networks. i know that it is not a problem with the wireless router. when troubleshooting the connection issue, it advises me to use the function button to activate the wireless communication.

I tried removing and re-installing the value added system driver, the flash cards support utility driver, as well as my wireless adapter driver. and the problem still persists.

I also tried a system restore to a date when i know that these problems were not present. and this didn't work either.

i would greatly appreciate help on this.

Answer:Re: Satellite P750 - function buttons are not working

Hello Jason

Generally speaking VAP reinstallation should help with this.
If not you can reinstall OS using HDD recovery option. After doing this you will have ?factory settings? again and everything should work again.

Is this option for you or you don?t want to reinstall OS?
By the way: which operating system do you use?

Hi all

I am using windows XP Professional.
I am unable install a driver fo the below mentioned PCI device which is listed as follows

In Device manager one question mark "?" coming with a description "PCI DEVICE"

I have already installed Modem, wireless Lan, display sound and IEEE1394

So please help me how to solve this. I need the answer for the following queries

1) This PCI card is using for which device?
2) How can i find out the exact driver software
3) Why the device name (eg: modem,) is not displaying
4) How to find out which device i am missing to install

your immediate support is highly appreciated

Answer:Satellite M70-131: PCI BUS 6 -DEVICE 4 -FUNCTION 4, driver required

Hello Peter

I really do not know what are you missing but fact is that on Toshiba download page you can find ?Installations Instructions? document. All you must do is to install all stuff listed there and in exact listed order. After doing this everything should work well.

I have M70-159 and using the same document I have installed WXP successfully.

BTW: I am not 100% sure but maybe you are missing driver for 5 in 1 card reader (cardbus driver).

Recently I bought a new U400-13J this is without OS.

Therefore I myself installed WinXP SP3 and all the drivers downloaded from Toshiba support page. The machine operates well, but some of the function keys, namely Fn+F1, F2, F3, F4, and Toshiba Zoom do not operate. All others are OK.

What can be the reason?

Answer:Re: Function keys not working on Satellite U400

To install drivers this is not enough. For some functions you must install the Toshiba tools from the Toshiba website.
Install the Hotkey Utilities and the Toshiba utilities.

Maybe you should also update the BIOS. You can find it on the Toshiba website: => Support & Downloads => Download drivers

I have a problem with the HWSetup utility. The problem is that, when i press FN in the keyboard, that bar at the top shows up right, and there i use the F keys to use any of the options listed there.

Well the problem is that just a while ago i had the option for the WLAN, to turn it off or on. But well a while ago i was checking something with the WLAN driver and uninstalled it and installed it again, but then i guess that caused the WLAN option in the FN keys at the top bar to disappear.

It was in F8 but now I no longer have a F8 in the bar, and i don't know how to bring it back and I need it so if please someone could tell me how to bring it back?

And I use Windows Vista Home Premium btw, 32 bit

here's a screenshot in case your not sure what i'm talking about

Answer:Satellite A205-S5880 - How to get back the FN+F8 key function

I would recommend firstly checking your WLan card if it has been recognized properly in the device manager.
Secondly I would recommend reinstalling the Toshiba Flash Cards Support Utility for Windows Vista

Check it out

PS: Hopefully you know that you should use the Toshiba US page for driver download!
