Satellite L500 - cannot flash BIOS

Question: Satellite L500 - cannot flash BIOS

Hi all,

Looking for some help here - I have a Satellite L500 series and recently the battery has stopped charging - went from 3 hours to 0% - not charging overnight. Have tried altering the eco settings, holding down the power button for 40 seconds and even a new Power Supply unit (we have these at my work), but nothing seems to work. The only thing I can do without purchasing a new battery is to flash the BIOS.

Problem: I am getting an error saying that the BIOS cannot be flashed because it has less than 10% power. Any idea for a work-around?

I'm more inclined to purchase a new laptop than to spend any money repairing this one (CD drive and a USB port have also stopped working) but want to try everything to keep the ol' faithful going.

Any hints or tips?

Preferred Solution: Satellite L500 - cannot flash BIOS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite L500 - cannot flash BIOS

To flash the BIOS using win-based version, the battery needs to be charged.
If it?s not charged, the BIOS update process would not start up.

But why you want to update the BIOS?
BIOS update does not solve the problems with CD/DVD drive or USB ports.

Hey all,

Got as Satellite L500 here (PSLS0A-084002). I'm having the battery not charging issue and everything I'm finding points to a BIOS update.

Sure enough there's a new BIOS to download from the laptops drivers page. So I have the WinPhlash file "sl500(mv)_bios_w210.exe". However running it causes it to fall over before flashing the BIOS with a Error Number: 144.

This is due to the battery being bellow 10% charge however I can't get it above 10% charge as the laptop won't recognise it.

There must be a way of getting WinPhlash to run without doing that check. I read you can run it with the "/forceit" switch and that will ignor the error however that was from a while back and it seems WinPhlash have changed that as it still spits out the error.

I read running it from DOS helps but after creating a dos boot cd it claims the exe can't be run from DOS (ffffuuuuuuuu!).

Any help appreciated. Thanks =).

Answer:Cannot flash BIOS on Satellite L500 due to low battery charge

Sounds like WinPhlash can't talk to the hardware directly due to a software problem.

Did you uninstall the Toshiba Value Added Package? Download and install the latest TVAP from -> Support -> Downloads

If it still doesn't work, then your Antivirus/firewall software may be blocking WinPhlash or you need to login to Windows as Administrator.

Hi there,

After starting from sleep mode the screen is fine for 3 or 4 minutes, then I will notice a quick flashing. This gets worse and worse until I then have to restart the laptop, or put it into hibernation and power up again. I've tried to gently move the screen to see if the connection is loose but the screen just continues to flash as before. The flashing is random, its like watching the CPU light flash but its my whole screen going. It only seems to happen after sleep mode, it doesn't happen every single time but i'd say more than fifty percent.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm wondering what I should do next or who to contact. I only got the laptop in July!

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can offer,

Answer:Satellite L500-1XD - why does my screen flash after Sleep Mode?

Hello Anna

Have you noticed this behaviour from the first day?
You know, sometimes some Microsoft updates can have negative influence on such standard functions. Since few months I have noticed strange situation on my Satellite notebook. After standby I get some stupid error and mouse is death. I didn't have it in the past.

What you can try is to install OS again using HDD recovery procedure and test functionality with ?factory settings?. I am pretty sure with clean preinstalled OS everything will be OK. if the problem persists maybe you should contact nearest Toshiba service.

I have recently Installed Windows 7 64 bit onto my Mother's Laptop (L500 - PSLJ0A-01E013) and from downloading either version of flash cards from the support site ( [here|] )

Results in (from what I can tell) only kenotify.exe and the relevant install info being created. Using the other one results in the original one being uninstalled, and then the same thing happening. While kenotify is running, noting happens if I use FN-F6 (brightness down) or FN-F7 (bright up) or any of the other ones.

Also, Toshiba support station doesn't seem to find any "updates" for the software, and it doesn?t even want me to download the BIOS update which I haven't got.

Answer:Trying to install flash cards on Satellite L500 - Win7 x64

Your posting is somehow confusing for me.
Do you have problem with SD card driver installation, keynotify.exe or FN keys functionality?

Have you installed own OS version?

I am using windows 7 ultimate x64 on L500-126, the new win7 x64 drivers have been available since yesterday.....

However, the Flash cards (Fn Hotkeys) still doesn't work after the installation of the new VAP. The flash cards is able to show up at the top of my screen, I can click them by mouse, but the Fn combinations does not work at all!

I've noticed that there is a downloadable driver called "Flash Cards support", even I installed this application the problem still remained.

Then I uninstalled VAP and kept "Flash Cards support", to my surprise, the combination of Fn+F6 and F7 (Adjusting brightness) worked! however, without VAP I could not use other combinations.

Are there still problems with the new VAP for win 7 x64?

P.S. The new "Hardware setup" seems to be a problem as well, I tried to change some configurations in this application but after re-boot all the options went back.

Good day,

My L500-21t is installed with windows XP OS.
Once the system is switched on, the system waits idle with a blinking black screen.

Even if we press F2 the system wont start the bios.
I tried holding the power button with battery removed and with power cable plugged.

It was of no use.

Please advice.

Answer:Satellite L500-21T cant access the Bios

Did you press the F2 immediately after the notebook has been powered up?
Try to press F2 several times?.

But to be honest it smells like a serious hardware issue? motherboard or graphic card issue maybe?

I don?t see many solution proposals for you as to checking the hardware parts? but this is a job for notebook technicians?

Good afternoon ,

My problem is I have a Toshiba L500 - 246 to that for oblivion , put a password on Windows 7 and now can not remember .

I decided to start from scratch and remove the entire computer. I clean the fan, I put thermal paste to the processor and graphics, and decided to delete all partitions and create a single .
Wanting to boot from the DVD, I went to the BIOS to change the boot BOOT, and on the first screen I get the following message: "HDD / SSD Not Installed ". I changed various settings in the BIOS, but still the same.

When I enter the Windows 7 DVD, you read me well until the window that says it needs the disk controller, and in that window I do not see any disk. I tried it with two SATA disks, and I get the same message.

Putting his ear to the hard disk when the disk starts the laptop makes the characteristic sound of light, but still not leaving anything in the BIOS.

Now, entering the browser to find the driver , I get the following:

An X Boot Disk: 30 MB of capacity

The USB flash drive appears as drive me C :

And finally, I get the CD as drive D :

Why might this be?
Why do I get the USB as a disk C ?

Thanks and regards

Answer:Satellite L500-246 - HDD not found in BIOS

Your posting is really confusing.

First of all it would be useful to know if the HDD or SSD drive is listed in the BIOS (first BIOS page)
If its listed, the HDD is OK and you follow with system installation
If its NOT listed, you should replace the HDD

Lets assume, the HDD is OK and you started the installation.
During the Windows setup you will be asked to add the SATA controller.

On the Toshiba EU driver page you will find the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
This driver contains the SATA files which you could add during the Windows installation.

Hope this helps

Hi Guys,

Yesterday, my mother-in-law was using her computer, and playing some game. The computer froze and I had to force a shutdown. Upon reboot, the computer continued giving the following message:
PXE-E61: Media check failure, check cable (Or something similar)

I removed the HDD, and replaced, it, with no avail. I checked the BIOS, and the HDD isn't even registering in there, so not sure what the hell has happened.

Anybody have any ideas on this? I'm looking at a new HDD otherwise.

Answer:Re: Satellite L500 - HDD not recognized in BIOS

If the HDD is not recognized in BIOS anymore I think it?s defective and you need a new one. This would be the reason why you get a PXE boot message at start up.

Is your notebook still under warranty? Then you can get a new HDD for free from an authorized service provider.
Otherwise you have to buy it yourself but it?s not expensive. You can use every 2.5? HDD with SATA interface.

Does anyone know where I could find the BIOS change logs .. I am interested to know what changes were implemented in BIOS version 2.00 for the satellite L500 series?
A link or any info would be much appreciated ..

Can you see a BIOS changelog file on the Toshiba page where you can download the BIOS update?
No? Then the case is clear: There is no BIOS changelog file available.

Don?t understand me wrong but that?s fact?

And let me give you a word of advice: Everything ok with your notebook? No problems at all? Then forget the BIOS update.

Hi there

Such updates are not offered on public download page so what you can try is to contact nearest Toshiba service and ask for help.
I?m pretty pessimistic about that because Toshiba doesn?t support CPU exchange or upgrade. I presume you know that. Do you?

I've noticed that a new BIOS version (v 1.90) for Satellite L500 Notebooks. My model - PSLS3A-01301D does not appear in the list of L500 models on the MyToshiba website, and I am very wary of installing the update incase it turns my laptop into a very expensive paperweight. Could anyone give me an idea if this new BIOS update is safe for my model?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Satellite L500 - Is BIOS version 1.9 compatible?

Hi Evan,

On which Toshiba website you have searched? Notebooks are country specific products and by using Google I have founded your notebook on the Australian page:

If your notebook model doesn?t appear in the compatibility list, I think this update is not compatible to your model.

Furthermore why you want to update it? This update should only be done if your notebook doesn?t work properly. Otherwise it?s not necessary to make a BIOS update!!!

Hello everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500-1HW, and today TEMPRO shown to me three alerts, one of them about a BIOS update. When I tried to run the BIOS update application (Phoenix UEFI WinFlash) it completed the first four steps, "Load new BIOS", "Analyze old and new BIOS compatibility", "Read old BIOS" and "Save old BIOS to backup file", but when it reached the las step, "Flash new BIOS", it got stuck showing the message "Programming Bios region...". Now the laptop is on and actually I can use it since the BIOS update application does not block the system, but I don't know what to do, I don't dare just to finalize the program because I don't know if the BIOS is right.

Please help me with this problem.

Thank you.

Answer:Re: Satellite L500-1WH stuck when updating BIOS

Maybe your Virus Scanner or another security application is blocking the BIOS access? Try disabling them and see what happens.

Also check if there is a UAC prompt in the taskbar.

> My laptop has now been updating for 3 hours at the programming step 3 of 37 stage on BIOS flash and is completely frozen it wont do anything at all.

The Bios update takes several minutes to complete. it looks like that the Bios failure process goes wrong. If you turn it off, you will get a blank screen. I even don't know what to advise you. You can wait but I don't think it finishes well.

The bad thing is that you have to go to ASp (service center) and ask them to reflash for money. Unfortunately, there is no warranty for Bios failure

I've been re-organising my nephew's laptop (part number Satellite L500-19X PSLS0E-00F01DEN), tidying files etc, applying outstanding updates etc and foolishly agreed to the Toshiba's utility offer to upgrade the BIOS which totally froze part way thru (at step 11 of 37 IIRC).

I've now got nothing but a black screen.

As I do have some IT skills, I've looked around and was going to go down the WINCRIS.EXE route creating a bootable USB drive to try and recover that way.

However, the latest BIOS for this laptop seems to be an .exe file, not a zip file from which I could extract the boot rom.

Guess I still have the option of taking the drive out of the laptop to try and recover the backup bios file the update utility said it saved to another machine anduse that to try to regress that way, but I would appreciate any advice - or indeed a bootable image - anyone could offer.

Guess I'm hoping for too much to think Toshiba themselves could supply such an image...

Answer:BIOS update bricked Satellite L500-19X

>However, the latest BIOS for this laptop seems to be an .exe file, not a zip file from which I could extract the boot rom.

The exe file isn?t ?real? exe file but it?s a package.
You can extract this exe clicking right and choosing ?Extract here??

I use WinRAR to extract the packages. Also WinZip or 7Zip should work.

But to be honest I?m not quite sure if you would be able to fix this issue.
From my knowledge an BIOS crisis disk would be needed to reflash the EPROM module and usually this can be done by Toshiba authorized service provider

However, please keep us up to date.

There is no relation between Bios and hard drive. They will reflash your Bios, all data on you hard drive will be untouched. But you should know that Bios reflash is not free procedure, you will have to pay.

It is just a small thing, but my last Toshiba laptop has the option of booting from USB. I could boot a Linux, and Windows from a USB flash drive, and this was great. So here is my question. Is there a way to boot from USB without a BIOS update?

Well, I know the answer is probably no, so I will ask the next question. Thinking that there is a update for my BIOS, I visited the website, and found out that the only update avaliable is the one I currently have. Next I went to the BIOS makers (Pheonix) website, that directed me to, which scanned my computer to check for updates. It claims that that is a new BIOS update avaliable, but I have to sign up and PAY for a yearly subscription to just get to see what the version number of this update is. So my question is, where is this "update" and does it support booting from USB?

Answer:Satellite L500 (PSLS9A-01U012) - BIOS update better than 1.6?

Hi Hambo,

The point is that not all notebooks support booting from USB device and if it?s possible is described in your user manual.
As far as I know it?s only possible to boot from USB floppy drive on Satellite L500 but not from USB stick?

Furthermore BIOS update does only fix bugs and not add new features so I don?t see a reason for an update.
But if you make a BIOS update anytime, you should download it form Toshiba website. This is the only website there you can get a compatible BIOS.

If everything works well and if you didn?t notice some serious problem there is no reason for update.
It is OK to be informed about available updates but the question is if they MUST be installed.

Generally speaking BIOS update is not dangerous but for some reason it can be screwed up and then you will have big problem.
My advice is: do not touch well running system.

yesterday i bought this new NB and have a problem with install OS WXP (Sata HDD drivers). I wanted to flash my BIOS on the newest version, but in OS Vista it did not going (through some ACPI drivers) so my question -> exist any other solution to flash, for example in BIOS?

The BIOS DOS-version doesn?t exist. If you want to update the BIOS you have to do it from the Windows OS because it?s a win version!!!

However, the BISO update is not necessary if you want to install the XP.
You have to install the Intel Storage Manger driver. This package contains the SATA drivers which are necessary to recognize the HDD.

Good luck

I have a Satellite A215-S7444 that originally came with Vista 32 bit, I have since done a custom install of Se7en 64 bit. There is an issue of when coming put of sleep mode that the audio device disappears. OK, so there is a Bios update for my model that is supposed to correct this issue.

If I remember correctly in the forums someone had posted "not to boot from within windows or u could completely bork your system." I have dl. The Bios update and created a "bootable" CD per the instructions using windows disc image burner but that is as far as I have gone.

So I would like some someone to post step by step instructions for me on how to SUCCESSFULLY flash my Bios. As far I know u have to hit F12 during bootup, then select the "boot" tab, then select Boot from disc." Then u have to select "Save and Exit with changes" or something along those lines. And then reboot. Is this correct or am I missing a step? I know that there is only ONE shot at this so I want to get it correct. Has anyone else successfully flashed the Bios?

Thanx in advance for all usefull information.

Answer:BIOS Flash on Satellite A215

Make sure the BIOS update is correct for your PSAxxx-xxxxxx model number. You can't just use any A215 BIOS.

The process is straight forward:

Recharge the battery and plug in the AC.
Boot from the CD (F12, select CD)
If it doesnt update automatically, type "dir" to view the batch files. You may need to run "BIOS.BAT" or similar.
Let it update and shut down by itself.

Thats it :)

Answer:Satellite 3000-x4: bad flash BIOS

It sounds like you have used a wrong BIOS version to update the BIOS on the unit. Well, I don?t know if you know it but the wrong version or a wrong BIOS update procedure can damage the mainboard. Furthermore it?s not possible to upgrade the BIOS for example 1.6 to 1.3.
I recommend to contact the service partner in your country because only the ASP can install the BIOS again. Hope the motherboard is not broken.

Hello dear forum users,

I have a BIOS virus and nothing seems to help. First I installed a BIOS version from 1.10 to 1.30(.exe), then I wiped my HDD completely and installed the newest version, which is 1.40. Now I can't reinstall the BIOS, because it says the version is the same as that installed on my laptop(1.40). Is there a flashable BIOS installation for this laptop? I couldn't find one in toshiba europe's driver page.

You will not get other BIOS update (traditional BIOS). Only win-based BIOS are available on Toshiba page!

Furthermore you should be able to install the Windows even the BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant.

What Windows do you try to install?

A BIOS flash will not wipe the password on a laptop...and may render it un-bootable at all if it's the incorrect flash. For BIOS password recovery on laptops it needs to be taken to a Toshiba Service Center to retrieve/reset the password.Be prepared to show proof of ownership as they will ask for it.

I need your help to fix my laptop since BIOS is not included in the warranty.

What happened:

I was downloading all drivers from Toshiba website to make a drivers CD-ROM in case I need it.
I accidentally clicked the BIOS update when I was doing drag and drop to a new folder and the BIOS begin without asking anything and freezz at about 50% I wait 30 min because I know BIOS is critical but after all this time I have no other choice then to power off the computer.

Now when I power on the computer I have no image the disc try to read and that it.

Now what I want to do is a CRISIS recovery since its the only option I have for now.

What I need is the BIOS file not the stupid .exe but a .rom or .bin I think and instruction on doing it on this particular model.

Thanks for looking to my post and I hope some one can help me here because a 80$ repair for a budget notebook is big.

Answer:Need you help to recover from bad BIOS flash on Satellite L300D-01P

I doubt you could be able to repair this notebook by yourself.
The point is that the ROM module was flashed not correctly and I assume it must be flashed again using an traditional BIOS version.
Such BIOS version is NOT available on the Toshiba page. Only a win based BIOS version.

Therefore you will have to contact the ASP in your country for a BIOS module flashing.

Sorry mate but I don't see any other solution for you problem.

Please I ask all people here on this forum if you can help me with my situation.

I have a Satellite L670-10P and I wanted to do a BIOS upgrade. I downloaded the BIOS update from the drivers page and ran the executable inside. The program started flashing BIOS at once without even asking anything or showing some information.

The problem is, that during flashing, for some reason the laptop just powered off - looks like it was overheating, because I had it on my bed and didn't realize that perhaps the air can't flow through the openings at the bottom.

Anyhow, now I have a non-working computer. Every time I want to turn it on, the fan starts a bit and then it turns off again after 1 or 2 seconds.

I also noticed, that if I plug in any USB stick and power it on while pressing Fn+B, it wants to read something from USB. I figured this out while trying to recover it using this Phoenix Crisis BIOS Recovery tool, but I had no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestion what can I do? Surely - some BIOS recovery tool, built into the notebook, is trying to access USB stick and looking for something, but what do I need to put on it?

Answer:Satellite L670-10P BIOS flash error

> Does anyone have any suggestion what can I do? Surely - some BIOS recovery tool, built into the notebook, is trying to access USB stick and looking for something, but what do I need to put on it?

Well, fact is that the BIOS EPROM module has not been flashed properly. The update procedure has been interrupted and therefore the notebook does not work anymore.

As far as I know such problems cannot be resolved easily. To reflash the EPROM you will need an special BIOS crisis recovery tool.
Usually the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country has access to such software and could help you to resolve the issue.

But I found some comments in another threads about the corrupt BIOS issue and how to solve it:

Hope it helps otherwise the ASP has to be contacted.

Did you also download the right BIOS for your notebook? I mean is the update designed for PSAA9E series or another one?
If you update the BIOS you should be logged in as administrator and close all running programs.

And why you try to update the BIOS? This update should only be done if you have problems with your notebook. It?s a little bit risky because you could destroy the ROM module in worst case.

I updated the Bios of a Toshiba C855-21Q. But during the flash, laptop restart.

Now, the computer won't start (black screen + power led on + wifi led blinking).

I will try the recovery mode.

I extracted the exe. Rename the FD file to PLCSF8.FD.
Copy on the root of usb stick (256Mb FAT16).

Then i plug it on laptop with AC, HDD, unplug. Just the USB KEY.
Plug the AC, hold <Win> + B and start the computer.

But nothing happen. The USB is not read (no blink)...
I also tried with other key like Fn +F / Fn+B / Fn+Esc ... still nothing.

What are the keys to start recovery.
The process is okay ?

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite C855-21Q does not start up - BIOS flash did not function

Unfortunately, you need special BIOS version to be able to flash the BIOS from USB flash memory stick.

The point is that you could download only the Win-based BIOS version from Toshiba EU driver page and this BIOS version requires preinstalled system.

In your case it looks like something went wrong during the BIOS update procedure and the EPROM module has not been flashed properly. To solve this issue, the EPROM module should be flashed once again using special BIOS crisis disk.

From my knowledge this can be done by Toshiba authorized service provider.

However, I also read in this forum that single users managed to reflash the BIOS by using the Phoenix Bios Crisis Recovery Tool. Not quite sure where you could find such software but recommend to google.

Hello everybody,

I have two laptops, Satellite Pro A300 and Satellite A300. Both have the same configuration, C2D E8300,2GB,ATI 3650 512MB and so on.....

Today I flashed BIOS to the latest version (from V3.90 to V4.20) on both of them. On the version 3.90 cooling was OK, fan worked only when it was necessary. But now after flashing the BIOS fan works permanently, it does not stop.

What I did make, in Vista's Power Options under Toshiba Power Saver I changed the Cooling Method from Maximum Performance to Battery Optimized, the cooling reversed to the normal operation, but the cover (keyboard area) became hot a little bit.

My question is, what is the problem with cooling in the new version (v4.20)? And how to solve this problem?
Again, problem didn't exist before BIOS flashing and the problem is on both computers.

Thank you for your help!

Best regards,

Answer:Cooling behavior after BIOS Flash - Satellite Pro A300

> What I did make, in Vista's Power Options under Toshiba Power Saver I changed the Cooling Method from Maximum Performance to Battery Optimized, the cooling reversed to the normal operation, but the cover (keyboard area) became hot a little bit.

I doubt there could be something wrong? I mean you said that after modification of cooling method in Toshiba Power Saver, the ventilators don?t run all the time?
Usually the cooling modules are controlled by Power Saver and the BIOS contains only the fan table.

My notebook's keyboard or the left notebook's side becomes warm too because at this side you will find the cooling modules which blow out the warm air?

So nothing unusual...

Hi Folks

I tried to upgrade my BIOS on my Satellite pro P300 series laptop, and it seems to have gone wrong. I have now read a lot about the winphlash version going wrong. I managed to create a recovery CD, and it starts the flash procedure, and almost runs to the end, but then cuts out and reboots. I have no idea how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try to flash the BIOS within the Windows OS?

The BIOS is win-based and you could flash the ROM module using the win based BIOS version.

For that you need an installed Windows OS.

Found a very interesting HowTo doc about the BIOS update.

I need to be able to flash my Satellite P100-240 from a bootable CD.

I?ve seen BIOS 4.40 for P100 on other Toshiba sites, eg: 524xml&sliceId=&dialogID=56504155&stateId=0%200%20 56506013

But not sure whether that is appropriate for P100-240.
They seem to be completely differently named. Not sure if that?s a country based thing.

Will the BIOS in the link mentioned be ok to run on my p100-240??

Answer:Need a BIOS flash boot disk for Satellite P100-240

Your notebook is NOT US series but European series and you have to use the BIOS from the Toshiba European driver page!
The wrong BIOS can damage the notebooks BIOS ROM module!!! And this would lead to the point where you wouldn?t be able to boot the machine!!!
Therefore you should ALWAYS use the BIOS designed for this notebook series!!!

Furthermore you will not find any traditional BIOS updates on the Toshiba page!
There are only windows-based BIOS updates and you could update it ONLY from running windows OS.

If the notebook?s BIOS cannot be updated from the Windows OS then you have to contact the Toshiba technician and have to ask for the help!!!

This is everything what you can do?

Probably you did run Toshiba Service Station using an account without administrator privileges. If you update the BIOS you should be logged in as Administrator. Also disable all programs that you don?t need before you start the update, like Antivirus, Skype, ICQ, Internet Browser, Office, etc.

Generally speaking BIOS update is not necessary if everything is ok with your notebook. If you don?t notice any problems I would do this update. Just have fun with your notebook. :)

Answer:HDD swop from Satellite A300 to Satellite L500

Satellite A300 supports the same HDD like a Satellite L500. Both use the SATA HDD therefore the inserted HDD should work.
Its good sign, that the HDD is visible in BIOS. This means that HDD is recognized and in good condition.

I?m wondering what you have done after the HDD has been inserted.
Did you try to install the system using Toshiba recovery disk or another disk?
Did you try to format the HDD firstly?

Try to boot form the system disk and format the HDD firstly.
Then follow with system installation

make sure that maximum Memory option is not checked. If it's checked, uncheck, press Apply, Ok and restart.

With more RAM your notebook will have better performance.
According notebook specification your notebook is delivered with 2 GB RAM but it can be upgraded up to 4 GB.

Does someonw know which boot key combination is working for the L850-1k0 ?
I flashed a modded bios, that first worked, then changed settings for the graphic card, shut down and now the laptop is with black screen (also at external monitor on VGA or HDMI).

Now I try to reflash the original BIOS (InsydeH20 6.8) with wincrisis ( which should boot from usb, which would be indicated by the flasing light on the usb), but this needs certain key combinations held during powering on, that differ: I tried with the ones I found googling for similar models, Fn + Esc, Fn + Esc, Windows + F, Windows + B, Fn + B - but nothing worked, no activity at the usb.

So does someone know the working combination f?r this model L850-1k0?
I did not find something searching for it online!

Help would be very appreciated!

I cannot get my Toshiba Satellite L500 13T PSLJ3E to work. Here is the timeline:

1. I brought it with Win Vista, It worked great for about 6 months but started slowing down and I decided to change it to Windows 7

2. I installed the Windows 7 using custom install(creating new "windows" folder, not upgrading Vista). Once again it worked great for about a month, but once again it ran into trouble - showing the Windows 7 version of the blue screen of death for 0.5 seconds followed by a restart.

3. I browsed the net and they said that the easiest way to get rid of the problem is to re-install. I did it(after trying several windows repairs) but yes, thats right, it died - before starting the windows it showed problems with Realtek Wireless.

Once more time - doesnt work, but this time I cannot even get to install it - the windows installer stops at around 60% of the expanding files and says: problems with the media device. And after the restart I cannot find the Hard Drive(the BIOS shows only FDD and CD/DVD)

Answer:Cannot run the OS on Toshiba Satellite L500

Blue screen and then restart sound's like something with hardware is wrong. I had something like that when my RAM module failed. Check your memory using memtest.

PS. I will not recommend installing windows on windows and reinstalling it. Better format drive and install new clean OS.

edit: or maybe something with your hard drive - if you had an option pull out you hard drive and check it on another computer using HDtune (or something like that)

I see that I have three Primary partitions already made on this new L500 ~
1.) 2GiB /dev/hda1 for Toshiba Recovery,
2.) 330+GiB (C:) for Vista and 3.) 12GiB /dev/hda3 ???.

I need to dual boot two windows installations and use and extended partition for Linux and Storage.

What is the third partition for and can I configure things so that I can save it within a Logical Partition ?

My aim is:

/dev/hda1 = Toshiba Recovery
/dev/hda2 = Vista
/dev/hda3 = Windows 7 ~ RC7
/dev/hda4 = Extended for all others ( including Linux, the 12GiB existing and a common storage space as well.)

Any suggestions or thoughts before I dive in ?

Regards, SnapafunFrank

Answer:Satellite L500 - What is the third partition on HDD?

The third partition belongs to Vista.
Vista creates two partitions; one a usual partition to install system and the second hidden partition for backup files. These backup files are important for Vista. Vista needs it to repair the OS if something will go wrong?

So it?s strongly recommended to leave this partition on the HDD?

I can't associate the freeze at any activity or any program.
The notebook freeze at startup or even afrer hours, with apparently no reasons (mouse pointer and keyboard freezed).

I've installed all the latest drivers and software available from Toshiba site.
I've tested the ram modules with different utility

I've disabled all settings regarding power management
I've controlled the temperature but it's ok when the system freeze, nothing strange BUT it freeze randomly.
At the end i've also uninstalled the graphic drivers and the system have installed the intel version automatically (now the system seems to be less freezzable).

I've uninstalled bluetooth and some other utility i don't use.

I don't know what other to try.

Windows 7 it's up to date and i've scanned the system with three different antivirus softwares + antispyware and it's clean, i can't uderstand what is the possibily cause

I won't return the notebook at the assistence becouse i'm sure that the problem it's not simply and becouse i've activated the Office Ready Product and i won't buy another licence key if the notebook it's replaced.

i don't see any problem to activate Microsoft office if you have a serial key. You can it do as much as you want. :)

hi everyone, i currently have a toshiba satellite L500, running windows 7, 3 gb ram 350gb hdd..

it was running fine until a fortnight ago, when my computor kept popping up message in the far bottom right hand corner saying windows error, critical error, youre hdd is missing, missing RAM etc etc, a window popped up telling me to do a system scan which i did and it came up with all these very bad errors.. it them popped up a program calle dmemory optimizer and told me to scan and do a defrag.. which i did.. and then teh next thingi knew, the hdd had disapeared from my computor, i couldnt access anything on the desktop, but could tab between the pages i already had open. then teh whole thing crashed.

i did a recovery on my own, and the error appeared to be fixed.. but then would only work properly in safe mode. so i took it to a repairer who charged me $188, reformatt teh whole drive, put on a copy of kapersky and office full version..

the day after getting it home, i noticed when i was typing things, the cursor would move about the page on its own, and id end up typing in the middle of what id already typed, sooo frustrating!! so the tech man suggested i download a program called touchfreeze.. and it fixed it..

now the last day or two, ill be in the middle of working on my laptop and it will just go to a black screen.. and it will resume when i press the mousepad, or it will completely turn off and go into sleep mode..
theres no settings on for sleep or hybernate,... Read more

does anybody know why the L500-1VT is out of stock everywhere online and the estimated times till new stock arrives keep getting pushed back?

are Toshiba replacing this model with one just a good? i.e. i5 CPU and decent ATI graphics?

Answer:Satellite Pro L500-1VT - not on stock anywhere?

As far as I know the Satellite Pro L500-1VT is available ONLY in Italy and UK.
If you are leaving somewhere else, then you would need to search for another Pro L500 model with the same hardware specifications.

I?m sure some online dealers would offer similar Pro L500 models?

I have a Toshiba L500-176 with Windows 7 Home Premium (64), only one month old and I have a problem with it.
Suddenly, it stopped connecting via wifi, I thought it would be to have installed or uninstalled a program and restores the system to a previous point where if it worked, but still did not detect connections, so I restored the former point, asin but I kept working.
I have tried to activate the wifi with the famous combination fn + f8 but as happens to many people is no particular combination appears on the screen (but on the keyboard). So look at the ConfigFree where it appears that the wlan connection is not available. "

The connections via ethernet cable running smoothly, but as withdrawal cord, no wifi option anywhere.

I tried to fix it with drivers available for this model but no way, as a last alternative format the computer to see if he returned to its original state, but still not working, the wifi light comes on only when you reboot, at first.

There a solution? why looking for information I've found many people with the same problem and few solutions.

PD: certainly in the device manager you see only the Realtek PCIe Controller Family. And right now I have no ethernet cable connected...

As I see, you have made a factory restores settings but it is still not working. Also, it's not shown in device manager that makes me think that there is hardware malfunction related to wifi module. You said it's only one month and still under warranty. So, contact the Asp (service center) in your country:

Dear Forum members!

I have a Toshiba L500-1XR (PSLJHE-001001HU) device.

Its originally shipped with core i3-330M (C2) CPU.
I'd like to upgrade it to i5-520M or better CPU -which same socketed, and have same power consumption.

From this i5 CPU, there are 2 steppings: c2, k0
My CPU have C2 stepping.

My question is:
Is BIOS 2.00 supports K0 steppings CPU's also, or - downloadable newest(?) BIOS 2.10 supports K0 stepping, or not at all?

So, can I use all, same socketed CPU's, or C2 stepping's only?

I didn't find any relevant information on internet.
Where can I find more information about the BIOS changes?

Answer:Satellite L500-1XR CPU compatibility

As I see, 51+ person opened my question, but, still no answer.

IF is it so difficult question, please, provide me with an idea, where, how can I get this information?

So today I decided to restart my computer because it was being a bit slow.

Now the whole laptop wont even boot up. In the picture that happens, then it brings me to the boot menu.
I try every boot option but it just brings me back to the boot menu.

When i try to system recover, the screen turns black after it says 'Windows is loading files'.
I havent done anything to it in the last 24 hours.

What it looks like when i boot up.

Answer:Satellite L500 won't boot

On the picture its visible that the notebook tries to boot from the HDD?. But obviously this procedure fails.
Therefore I would assume that the internal HDD does not work properly?
Probably the previous slowdowns were related to the HDD issues.

Try to boot from using a Linux Live CD or another bootable system live disk (WinPE)
Such ?Live CDs? don?t install anything on the HDD and usually even if the HDD would be faulty, the notebook could be booted up.

Finally I think you will need to replace the HDD in order to reinstall the system.

Answer:DVD is not recognized on Satellite L500-1XJ

It is not easy to say what is wrong there.
We don?t even know which DVDs do you use.

Maybe you should write little bit more about all this and offer some fact and relevant info. You know, for better understanding.

By the way, which driver you have installed again?

I just bought a new Satellite L500-1EH, Windows 7 and none of my function keys work with the fn keys seem to work (meaning that when I press fn key + one of the function keys nothing happens). Does somebody know how can I solve it?

thank you very much,

Answer:Satellite L500-1EH - Nothing happens if I press a FN key

What do you think about installing the drivers for FN keys?
You have to download Toshiba Value Added Package that you can find on the Toshiba website. > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

I had a similar issue and after installing this Toshiba all everything works. :)

My brother's Laptop refuses to start up, It won't even let me get into Safe Mode by pressing F8, I have to hold the power on button but when I let go the power light comes on for about a second but then disappears.

This happened after It asked him to do a System Restore at start-up, but then it didn't boot up after that, Any help?

Answer:Satellite L500-DT1 won't Start Up

Can you enter the Bios pressing F2 on powering up? Have you tried to restore from Hdd recovery? You say that has started after trying to do a System restore, so I guess the bootsect.exe corrupted... If you have Windows live Cd try to boot up from it.

Hi I have a second hand Satellite L500-1XC, the previous owner has installed Ubuntu (which I can't access due to password) as well as windows 7 and I'm trying the laptop restore it to factory settings but I just don't know how.

I've tried turning it off and then holding 0 and pressing the start button. On start up the bottom of the screen does say HDD Recovery at the bottom left of the screen but after that it just goes to the selection part for me to pick either Ubuntu or Windows 7 and then just loads the laptop as normal.

I have tried looking for the Recovery Media Creator but I can't find it. It seems many of the original Toshiba utilities and supports have been deleted.

If anyone can help me to fix this laptop I would be so grateful as I really can't afford to buy a recovery disk from Toshiba.

Answer:Satellite L500-1XC HDD Recovery help

> I'm trying the laptop restore it to factory settings but I just don't know how
I don?t think that HDD recovery would work because the Linux has been installed on the HDD and I think the partition table has been changed.
This might be the reason why the HDD recovery isn?t working.

You could still check this Toshiba document which describes the whole HDD recovery procedure:

So now HDD recovery does not work? in this case you can use only the installation disk.
You can try to install Windows 7 using Microsoft disk (the Toshiba drivers are downloadable) or you will order the disk from Arvato:

I bought the notebook in last year and I need my notebook every day. Thank you so much for your help.

Best regards,

As far as I know you cannot order one single key but if only the small key cap is broken but small mechanism is not defective you can try to contact Toshiba service and ask for help.
I?m 100% sure they have enough defective keyboards and can give you this single key cap.

Pay a coffee and maybe you will get one. ;)

Hi All!

I have noticed that Intel have released new drivers for their 4500MHD graphic card, however, the one's released on Toshiba's site for my Satellite L500-1KK are older and are never updated as frequently as those released on Intel's site, my questions are:

1. Is it safe to use the new drivers from Intel for their chipset or should I stick to the ones released by Toshiba?
2. What possible differences are there between these Intel drivers and Toshiba's? ?:|

Thanks all!

Answer:Satellite L500-1KK - Which driver to use?

You see, dude, If everything works fine don't touch the system with any driver update. I still run my laptop with the old drivers and satisfied.

Yes, you can use intel chipset drivers and shouldn't be worry :)

I have an 4-5 years old Toshiba L500-128 and I'd like to upgrade the CPU. Atm I have a Core 2 Duo T6500. I know that I can put a T9500 in it, but if possible I'd like to put even a better one. So I have a few questions:

1) Can I put a CPU with 1066 FSB speed and will it work? T6500 has 800 FSB.
2) Can I put a CPU with 44 or 45W TDP? T6500 has 35W.
3) If answer is yes to both previous questions, can I put a CPU with 1066 FSB and 45W?

Is possible I'd like to put something like T9900 or even a Quad Core.

Thanks in advance :)

Answer:CPU upgrade for Satellite L500-128

>1) Can I put a CPU with 1066 FSB speed and will it work? T6500 has 800 FSB.

In my opinion you should check the chipset compatibility and the CPU support.
As far as I know the notebook?s motherboard supports the Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset

On Intel Ark page I could find the Intel mobile GM45 chipset specs and compatible products:

However, fact is that new CPU needs to be supported by the chipset and BIOS.
If one of the parts (chipset or BIOS) would not support the new CPU, the notebook will not boot up.

Additionally you should also know that notebook manufacturers don?t support CPUs upgrade.
What does this mean exactly?

This means that even if the chipset would support new CPU, the BIOS could be the troublemaker and would not support the upgraded CPU. From my long experience, there are no information about the BIOS support. Therefore the CPU upgrade is always an risky procedure. Maybe it will work, maybe not?
