Cooler on Satellite L505 make strange noise

Question: Cooler on Satellite L505 make strange noise

I have a Satellite 505 for about 6 month, and a few days ago the cooler started to make strange buzzing noise when it works on high RPM rate. It didn't fell, got shaked, nothing.
Is there any way to fix it (maybe clean it?) without taking it to the support lab?

Preferred Solution: Cooler on Satellite L505 make strange noise

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a problem with my satellite L505-13n.

Listen what the problem is:
It makes a very annoying noise when it starts up.
This noise is coming from the speakers. I can't describe the noise, but i can't stand it!

I notice that when i move the energy wire the sound was changing to lower or higher rate.

Could anyone suggest me something?
Sorry about my english, if something is frustrating, let me know

Answer:Satellite L505-13n makes a strange noise when it starts up

I?m not sure if this would be helpful but I found this Toshiba document which provides a solution if you will hear a whistling sound coming out from the speakers.

Disable the microphone volume in the speakers properties.
This could help.

Good morning,

I had a problem with my speakers (probably the left one): during starting of windows or when windows live notifies a new message incoming the sound I hear is not clear but there's a noise similar to a robotic sound. It looks like my speakers don't work well. I bought my toshiba 10 days ago.

thanks a lot

What if you plug the headphones and check what happens? When do you listen music it exists?
I think, you should play with some windows event sound settings.

Hello again,

I have a toshiba sattelite c855 12z, and i hear a strange noise even when toshiba pc health monitor shows that the cooler is off, it's like an air blowing inside the laptop , does it have 2 coolers? or can it be the hard disk? when i bought the laptop was very quiet, now i always hear this sound..

Help please

Answer:Satellite C855-12Z - strange noise even if the cooler is off

Its always difficult to talk about things which are not checked...
There are two things which could create a noise: cooling ventilators or HDD.
Cooling ventilators are not OFF? the cooling module may run at lower speed but its not completely off.

HDD spins too but it should not create any noises if the HDD is OK?

When talking to people on Skype and MSN people say that my microphone makes this strange noise. They can vaguely hear me over the noise. People say it is kind of like a gurgling noise.

At first I thought it would be a driver issue so using Device manager in windows I searched online for an update for my Realtek High Definition Audio and it told me the version was up to date.

I went from Vista to Windows 7 about 5-6 months ago, Maybe a problem occurred when i reinstalled my drivers? Any advice would be appreciated!

Computer specifications:
-Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
-Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P7450 2.13GHz
4.00GB RAM (2.99 Usable)

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A350 - Microphone make strange noise

Driver update could be useful in this case but the sound driver is not related to internal microphone. The internal microphone is a part of webcam so in this case I would recommend reinstalling the webcam driver from official Toshiba website: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

And don?t forget to check Windows sound settings. I would try to disable the microphone boost and reduce the microphone volume.

My A110 Satellite notebook was making a noise of the cooler fan. Then their where different speeds of cooler and after 2 minutes the cooler was standing. After reboot the problem was away.

Is their anywhere someone who has the same problem? The notebook is 1 year old and I have further guarantee.

Answer:Cooler fan noise on Satellite A110

What do you mean exactly by ?notebook was making a noise of the cooler fan??
Do you mean the common noise which comes from the cooling module while the fan is rotating?

In my opinion this is nothing unusual. The fan rotation speed depends on the internal temperature and the additional settings in the power saver for example.
If your notebook doesn?t overheat (unexpected automatically shut downs) then the cooling module works properly and you shouldn?t be worried ;)

Best regards

I have this x200 for over a year now and for the last 10 days I hear some strange sounds near the cooler that is on the right lower side (the cooler under the cooler from the DVD).

I don't know how to open this notebook to maybe clean the fan or exchange it. Is there like a disassemble guide for this machine.

Answer:Satellite X200 - Strange sounds near the cooler

Sounds like the fan needs replacing.

Is the system under warranty? I would send it to an ASP for repair. The X200 is a complicated design and may be difficult/risky to pull apart by owners.

I have a noise or tuc tuc tuc every 30 or 40 seconds in the computer.
I can listen this noise from the Dinamics.

Answer:Strange noise appear every 30 or 40sec in Satellite Pro S

It?s difficult to say what could be a source of such noise?
Maybe it?s a cooling module/fan which rotates or maybe it?s a HDD?
Who knows?

Usually the notebook should not make such noises? if the HDD develops such noise then you should create an backup of your data because this can be a beginning of the end? in worst case your HDD could die and you would loose all files stored on the HDD.
So, be careful?

I noticed twice a strange noise coming out of my Satellite L40
About one or two seconds there was a sound that sounded a bit like the noise that you hear when you use a analog dial up modem and are trying to connect.

It came out of the blue and I am using a wireless ADSL connection.
The sound of my notebook was off.

Does anyone noticed the same thing or do you know what it could be?

Answer:Strange noise coming out of my Satellite L40

I have the same strange noise. It happens sometime like you said - out of the blue. It sounds like dial-up modem but I also have a feeling it sounds like a hard disk with a problem - something clicking for a second or two (it's a brand new notebook that I bought about 40 days ago and I don't do any heavy work on it - some typing, Internet browsing and such things.

I would also want to know what is it. Especially if it can harm my data some day...

Since two days I have been having a strange problem with my 1 Month old Satellite A55S1064. The cooler was very quiet since I bought the laptop but 2 days ago it started to produce strange noise that i cannot really work on the laptop, it really destructs. The laptop gets hot, but i think it's not a critical temperature- my previous laptops also got hot sometimes.

An interesting fact is, that when I hit the pc a little bit the noise stops for a couple of minutes.

My suggestion is, that cooler gets stuck or smth similar. What can I do about that? i don't want to send my laptop to the support because it'll take a while to check the problem then.

Answer:Strange Noise on a Satellite A55 S1064

It?s a very bad idea to open the notebook by yourself because you will lose the warranty.
It?s a new notebook and you should not risk the warranty.
You can bring the notebook to your dealer or you will contact the Toshiba service partner in your country.
I would take a one of these possibilities.

The hard drive has started to make a buzzing noise on my A30, I guess this is not good news, i.e. it is Kaput?

I downloaded HDDLife which tells me the hard drive is all ok, but I don't feel very confident.

I have backed up everything, and am thinking about a replacement hard drive.

So I have two Q's:

Should I get a new hard drive?

& if so, then would one of these be compatible?

Answer:Satellite A30: HDD started to make a buzzing noise

These are not great news.
3 month ago my HDD went dead. It was a simply head crash.
A day before it happened I have noticed strange sound coming from notebook inside.
But I was not sure if it?s a HDD sound.
So day after I wanted to start the notebook but? the BIOS has not recognized the HDD.

So I have replaced a hdd and all was ok.
So take care. Maybe the same will happen to you.

I don?t know if the 80GB will work but as far as I can remember some A30 was delivered with a 40GB HDD.
SO maybe you will be able to use a 60GB but I?m not sure about the 80GB. You have to test it, you know?

PS. The notebook should support the enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface

It seems to come from the right hand side under the number pad.
It does not seem to affect performance.

For the past 24 hours my laptop as detailed above has been making a short (3-4 secs) low buzzing noise approximately every 5 minutes. It appears to be coming from the top LHS of the machine. In all other ways the machine is in perfect working order. It is 4 weeks old.
(I hope I have written this question in the correct place?)

Answer:Strange noise emitting from Satellite Pro S500

Hi buddy,

What is LHS?

I think it?s hard to say what is causing this exactly but theoretically it could be related to the HDD?
If your notebook is only 4 weeks old, the repair is for free due warranty.

Hello, I have a
Satellite A100-998
Part Number : PSAA9E-0PP044EN

My speakers make a horrible high pitched noise when the laptop is plugged into the AC power, but not on battery. It happens through my in-built soundcard, my external soundblaster card, and the headphones ports on both, and they all have the latest drivers anyway, so the problem is elsewhere. The noise doesn't show up on the windows output waves, i.e. muting everything doesn't stop it, nothing is "generating" the sound like a program running in the background.

Can anyone help? Here's a link to the noise, I recorded it with the headphone port linked to the microphone port, it's quite quiet, you might have to turn your speakers up to hear it. Link:[]

I'm guessing it's some sort of interference but I'm a software guy, I don't know about these sorts of things.

Answer:Satellite A100-998: Speakers make noise when on AC power

I doubt software could cause that kind of thing, sounds like it could be an earthing issue or a component on the mainboard.

I'd take it to a service center and get them to have a look.

My brand new toshiba laptop is constantly producing a strange buzzing/static noise which appears to be coming from the fan.

I am not sure if this is the case with all of these models but it is quite annoying and I am worried that something could be wrong with the laptop.

Please can anybody help me on this one?
What may be causing the strange noise?

As I said it appears to be coming from the fan but I am not 100% sure.

Answer:Satellite C50-A-1DV makes strange static/buzzing noise

Did you notice this buzzing/static noise while heavy fan rotation?

To me it?s very difficult to say if it?s a ?common? fan noise or unusual noise which could be related to cooling module problems.

At the other hand you are not 100% sure if this noise is coming from the fan? so I think we are groping in the dark?

From my point of few the notebook is new and if you are unsure if there is some hardware problem, you should ask a service engineer for and check.

Sorry mate but at this point i have no other "solution" for you :(

Then I started to get strange scratchy noises (both from speaker and with headphone).

And now -after a month or two I started getting this problem- I can't record voice.

Reinstalling the driver didn't help. :(

It never used to do this.
Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite L20: Strange noise coming from heatsink when AC adaptor is taken out

I don't know if you hear the same sound as I do, when doing like you described, but this sound comes from CPU, when your notebook is idle or under-worked.

I don't know if this is maybe normal but I think my charger did not make this noise a few month ago.
I got my Satellite R630 14J in November 2010.

Since some weeks my charger beeps (a very high constant noise) when my notebook gets charged or even when the charger is plugged in into the computer.

Does anyone else has the same issue or know if this is a case for the support of Toshiba?

Thanks for response

Answer:Satellite R630-14J - AC adaptor make high constant noise

The high constant noise could be caused by broken AC adaptor cable.

Such noise is usual for power and appears mostly if an cable or AC adaptor is faulty.

I think you should test a new AC adaptor.

Good luck

I have a Satellite A300-1hv with harman kardon speakers.

The problem is that when I am listening to a song or anything there is a noise from the left speaker but I don't know if its the actual speaker or the case rattling/vibrating.

The speaker doesn't sound like its damaged because when I put the volume to full I can hear abit of that noise from the right speaker.

What can be done about this?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Re: Satellite A300-1HV - Strange noise appears from left speaker

According to your description there sound which is coming from the left speaker is different as the sound from the right speaker. Is it correct?

Well, you said also that you are not sure if it?s related to the case or the speaker itself.
I think it could be a hardware issue and therefore you should contact the ASP in your country for a check.
Possibly the left speaker must be replaced?

I like playing alot of music on my laptop, but lately this stranges keeps randomly occuring. It almosts sounds like the track has frozen up, but it hasn't because it keeps playing(like a scratched disc in a cd player freezing??).

Its just every now and then, but it is very noticeable especially when played through my good external speakes. It occurs through the inbuilt speakers, standard headphones and external speakers.

Just wondering if any has any ideas what it is and how i can fix it because it is really annoying me.

Your posting is pretty general and there is no one single relevant info that can help us to understand described issue.

*Hi guys* (!) :^0

I've just bought this A500-17x and its a great piece of kit and does everything it says on the box save for one issue:

Poping noise once every few seconds when playing music or game sounds (similar to a scratched or dirty record) and a worping effect (sort of blur if you will) or sinth effect about once evry 5 minutes.

Now I like music quite loud so I thought the "wee" speakers can't take the volume resulting in some popping. (similar to small cheap mp3 player speaker sets) however, I noticed that the noise can also be heard through headphones and other speakers.

As for the weird sound thats worthy of the Star Wars soundtrack it seams like its experiencing some processing trouble.

I've done the usual stuff such as changing settings, adjusting eqaliser, search for drivers but to avail.

Now if there is someone with the same issues or knows a sollution to this issue splease let me know.
Thank you in advance...

Also feel free to use this thread to discuss all your sound problems :D

Do this!

As far as I know you can get the latest Realtek sound driver on the Realtek page.
You need the Realtek HD audio driver.

Furthermore I think you should update the BIOS too?
Take a look on the Toshiba European driver page for newest BIOS?
I read here in the forum that BIOS 1.3-win should be the newest one?

Can somebody tell me how i can re-install the bios software?

Such a reinstall function that you mean is not available for BIOS. You can only update to a newer version but not reinstall the current version.

I think there is another solution for your problem but first of all it would be interesting to know if you can notice these problems with external speakers or headset too.

What are the main differences between the L505-144, L555-11K and A500-1GL?

Which is the best model?

Answer:Re: Differences between Satellite L505-144, L555-11K and Satellite A500-1GL

I think you should take a look on the Toshiba notebook specification page and should compare both notebooks:

*Satellite L505-144*

*Satellite A500-1GL*

Satellite L505-144 has been released in UK and the Satellite A500-1GL has been released in Germany.

The L505-144 supports faster and better CPU, it has been delivered with Win 7 32bit and 64bit. It supports the nVidia instead of ATI GPU but the HDD is smaller 320Gb instead of 500GB?

Im assuming after today installing the corsair h60 water cooler and switching on the terrible noise from the supplied fan. Im assuming its the fan because obviously its new, but i did a couple of tweaks to my system whilst installing the cooler, i turned the psu the other way around and connected a case fan at the front what i hadnt connected previously, which is the same type of fan i took from the back of the case to install the cooler.
So options, is it ok to replace the fan supplied with the cooler by the one i took out. Ive read i can but need to make sure obviously.
The other thing is this new fan is running at 4250 rpm, whilst the others have hovered around 1100 rpm.

I also purchased 2 pack corsair af120 performance fans, could using one of these be ok and quieter

Many thanks

Answer:corsair h60 water cooler fan noise

I have an H80 cooler. The stock fans are noisy - too noisy for my recording studio use. I replaced them with "quiet" fans after talking to Corsair who told me users that had issues with the stock fan noise were replacing them with "quiet" fans.

My H80 has a 3 speed fan switch mounted on the CPU cooler assembly. Don't know if the H60 has this.

Having 4G of RAM (2 x 2G), I wanted to to upgrade to 8G (2 x 4G). I found out that my mother board supports 8G of DDR3 1066Mhz (PC3 8500) as a maximum. I bought the following two RAM modules: Corsair CM3X8GSDKIT1066.

My BIOS accepts these and shows a total RAM of 8192M. I have the BIOS version 2.10 (the latest version). I disabled "USB Legacy Emulation".

Running Windows 7 32-bits and Linux 32-bits without PAE work. They detect 3G of RAM.
Running Windows 7 64-bits halts the laptop, even in Safe Mode. Running Linux 32-bits with PAE or Linux 64-bits halts the laptop after a few minutes. Installing Linux 64-bits with the 8G RAM in place also halts the laptop a few minutes after the installation starts.

What is going wrong in my system and how can I upgrade the RAM to the maximum supported size?

Thank you.

Answer:Upgrade RAM to 8G on Satellite L505-13J

The notebook supports an i5-430; CPU and the supported FSB is 1066Mhz.
This means that RAM modules would run max at 1066mhz
The notebook supports also the 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB)

In my opinion it looks like the new modules are not fully OK or compatible?
There are many users in this forum who had problems with modules from Corsair?

Try good quality modules from Kingston? they might be expensive but should work ok.

After I recovered my laptop with Toshiba recovery, BD-ROM turned into DVD-RW and I cannot watch BR films since then.

What should I do?

Hi everyone,

Forgive me if my english is a little weird, it's not my native language :)

I need a little help solving this mistery : I've had my Satellite 505-13X for more than a year, with Win7 pre-installed, all was working just fine and I got very fond of the Fn (Fonction) key, used it all the time !

Now sudenly it doesn't work anymore - no reaction whatsoever when I press it. And since the last time it worked I didn't install any new software or anything.
I obviously checked the key itself, but as far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with it, It moves just as the other keys... ??

I read in the manual and here in the support section that it can be deactivated by some programs. That's very instructive and all, but it doesn't say anywhere what to do when it does happen !!
Soooo frustrating.

Any ideas ?
Thanks for your help, it's not a matter of life and death but it's just really annoying when you can't use your old habits anymore... Grrrrrr !

Answer:Satellite L505-13X - How to reactivate the FN key?

Hi frogfruit,

FN keys are controlled by Value Added package and Flash Cards Support Utility. Both tools you can download on Toshiba website.

Check this!!

Answer:Fn accessiblity on Satellite L505

It is not easy to say why this happen but I can imagine you have forgot to install some important component. Fact is that drivers and all other Toshiba specific stuff must be installed in right installation order.
Here is Win7 install order and you can check if you have done it on the same way or something is not installed:

Windows 7
Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility
Realtek LAN Driver
Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
Display Driver
Realtek Audio Driver
TOSHIBA Supervisor Password Utility
TOSHIBA HW Setup Utility
TOSHIBA Flash Cards support utility
TOSHIBA Value Added Package

PatchFiles PCI PCIIDEREG-1.1

I own a Satellite L505-10T and would like to change CPU with a more powerful model. What are the supported CPUs today?

Answer:Satellite L505-10T - CPU upgrade

CPU upgrade is not supported and if you do something like this it is on your own risk. Toshiba has created one document about it and you can read it on

Also very important thing is that such action will cancel valid warranty. In my opinion it is not so good idea. Generally speaking CPU performance cannot be so bad and what you can do is RAM and HDD upgrade. RAM can be upgraded to maximum level and HDD can be exchanged with fast SSD.
I have done this on my machine and notebook performance is simply amazing. Both upgrades are supported by Toshiba and you can do this on our own.

I just got ATI 5850 and a more powerful PSU which start to raise my hardware temp.. the cpu temp is fine, but the graphics card is about 49 celcius and the motherboard is at 63 celcius. the fan is at about 1900round/min when i am not gaming. i think this is little high... so could I do anything like adding an additional fan or something else to improve this situation?

thx in advance!!

Answer:How to make my new setup cooler?

The graphics card temp isn't horrid. Like I said in the other thread, if the 63c is your idle NB temp. for 20 bucks you can get a decent NB cooler to bring it down.

Firstly my laptop: Satellite L505-13D
..and the problem: after ..let?s say.. a year, my videos started lagging. I tried to reinstall graphic drivers, codecs, media players, the problem maintains on every video player.

The problem does not occur on clips watched in internet browsers. Following few advices about Intel rapid storage technology driver, I tried to reinstalled it as well.. nothing happened.

Today my last attempt to get rid of this problem failed as I reinstalled my windows and all movies and clips continue to lag. It?s looking like 3 seconds playing and one second not.

Does anyone have any idea what can cause this and what can i do to solve this please?
Thank you, heppi

Answer:Satellite L505-13D - video lagging

I only want to add that the same movie lags when play from HDD and does not when played from CD. That might look like there are problems with HDD but there are also movies on my HDD that are playing without problems. And also when playing one movie right after my system starts, it does not lag bud few minutes later it does ..

Any clue?

Hi All,

I've bought this laptop to my sister-in-law. All is going fine But she is not able to connect skype to the Internet.
I've take control of her laptop with LogMeIn in order to check was she was doing.
We've resetted her password and can log on to the skype website.
But skype client always says something like "can't recognise username or password".
I've check the McAfee Firewall settings, saw the skype has a full access to the Internet.
I've also temporarely deactivate her router firewall... but no way.
Skype doesn't want to connect :(
If I use her username/password on my system, it works like a charm (as espected).
If I try my own account on her laptop, skype can't connect too.

Does anyone have ever had something like that and has an answer or advice ?

Thanks a lot.

PS: I've also post on skype forum:

Answer:Satellite L505-13X - Skype can't connect...

Did you try to download the latest skype version? just check it and disable McAfee at all ( you say that skype has a full access to the Internet but I think it' s still blocking)

My laptop won't start up after it received a bit of a blow to the keyboard. Given the nature of the cause, I assume it is a hardware issue... I opened it up and examined all of the components but was unable to find any obvious cracks or dents in anything.

Since the problem started, I am unable to get the laptop to come on. When I press the power button, the lights will come on like it is trying to boot up, but then it will die and restart. At this point the lights usually stay on for longer without it dying, but at no point during any of this does anything show up onscreen whatsoever. I have tried starting from the battery and with it plugged in to no avail.

Just wondering if anyone might have any insight as to a good starting point of what might be the culprit. The area that was struck was just about dead center, on the space bar, if that helps....

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Answer:Satellite L505 Doesn't Start Up

Hi, sounds like the mainboard may be damaged. The soldering comes loose when the mainboard is impacted which causes all kinds of problems.

You could try re-seating the RAM or try a different Hard Disk, but failing that you may need to send the notebook to a Toshiba Service Center and get a quotation.

I am the unhappy owner of a Toshiba Satellite L505-111 laptop (PSLS3E-01500YR3). A week after I have bought the laptop (13/03/2010) I observed that the a key from the keyboard does not work properly:

In Win 7 pressing " or ' it appears only after a second key is pressed. In Linux (Ubuntu 9.10), presing " it appears something like ".." .

The service (Romania, Scop Computers Control Service Laborator) does not recognize this unusual behavior (Service Note 26/03/2010). When I went to take the laptop (19/04/2010) I found the same behavior. Even the laptop has a Romanian keyboard, the usual English(US) keyboard settings are used.

What can be done?

Answer:Satellite L505-111 - Win 7 with Romanian keyboard

Have you tried to make settings in Clock- language- region settings? There, you can change the ,,Input keyboard,, , you can add/remove English or Romanian.
About the keyboard speed, go to Control panel, under Hardware and Sounds you will see ,, device and printers,,. Click on it, you will see ,,hid keyboard device,,. Click with the right mouse button, keyboard setting appears. You can change the keyboard speed settings.

La revedere!

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite L505 and for some reason one key will not work it?s the last letter of the alphabet.
I can?t type it for obvious reasons. I am staying in Saudi Arabia and use a keyboard with English and Arabic letters. I am English though so don?t require the Arabic alphabet.

Any ideas or should I return the laptop?

Hoping for a response. Thanks Vic

Answer:Keyboard Issue on Satellite L505

I don?t think that you have to return the whole laptop. Maybe it?s just a wrong setting in Windows so what keyboard input language did you set in Windows?
Are you running factory settings or another OS?

If one key or more keys don?t work you have to exchange the keyboard. There are no single keys so you have to replace the whole keyboard but it shouldn?t be so expensive. Just ask an authorized service provider to get a new one and they can exchange it too. :)

Hi all, I've got a Satellite L505-13Z. After recovery from Hard drive, something went wrong and I only had the F12 page.
I used the DVD recovery. It worked for an hour installing win7, then it made a reboot and I saw windows screen, so it booted again and stopped working: each time I turn it on, I have the F12 screen, to choose where to boot. Hard drive is seen, but if I choose it I got the "Boot error" and go back to the same page.

I would like to try Hiren's boot to check if hard Drive is OK or not . How can I know if it is only the hard disk or something else?

Answer:Satellite L505-13Z - BOOT error

I used a bootable cd with Hiren's and each test on Hard Disk and RAM are OK, no errors.
I inserted the DVD again to see if there was the possibility to repair an installation, but not, so I installed again. At the end I was asked to remove the DVD and reboot; I did and I went in loop: win 7 was updating registry, reboot, win 7 was updating registry ........

I asked myself if DVD was damaged, butthere's no way to download from microsoft a copy of win 7, because when I insert my serial the response is to ask the vendor .......

what can I do?

Here's the deal:

* with the battery out and the power supply disconnected I discharged the MB by holding the power button down for 60 seconds (tried this at least 10 times)
* the plugged-in LED stays on consistently
* the power supply is the correct voltage and amperage; when connected to the laptop the plugged-in LED is green and it charged the battery (battery LED went from amber to green) but the power-on LED stays not lit
* tried with just the power supply, no battery; also just the battery, no power supply
* the fan doesn't run
* removed the RAM cards, HDD, optical drive, battery

Would a bad heat sink-to-CPU contact cause this symptom? Wouldn't I get a momentary power-on indication if that were the case? Or when the RAM cards are out?

This unit is VERY clean, has no loose parts or rattles. It's not had any trauma or shocks or stuff spilled into it. Based on its general condition it seems unlikely to me that the motherboard is shot. Am I forgetting something?

I updated my bios to 2.10 few days ago everything was fine but now im getting video_tdr_failure crashes. It started with Win 10 64 bit only while playing games everything other was fine expect few pixel problems like broken colored pixels on videos, i thought the problem might be Win 10 64 bit. I changed OS to win 7 32 bit and it is worse now i can't even use firefox or chrome my video card stops right after i open them. I think it is a bios problem or my video card is dead. While i was using win 7 i was able to set resolution 1366x768 but i wasnt even able to use firefox, watch videos insta tdr crash. Right now i didn't upgrade my gpu drivers it is still ''Microsoft basic gpu'' so resolution is 1024x768 and i can use every program or watch even full hd videos but there are a lot of artifacts. I have no clue my video card is dead or it is bios problem?

Dear friends,Good Day.My Toshiba Satellite L505-10X laptops Cooling fan is not working.CPU Temperature is not displayed in PC health Monitor's application .Kindly Guide me to solve this problem,Regards,Siva

Answer:Satellite L505-10X cooling fan is not working

Just because the temperature isn’t mentioned in the Toshiba Health Monitor, it doesn’t mean, that the cooling fan doesn’t work properly.

Can you hear the cooling fan running?
Does the notebook shuts off unexpectedly?

In my opinion if the cooling fan would not work properly, the internal temperature should increase very fast to an critical level… in such case the notebook should shut down automatically…

But if the unit doesn’t shut off and if you are still able to use it properly, then I doubt that there is some problem with the cooling module.

Hello all

I have the specified model

and I want to use the designing program rhino3d v5.

Program minimum specifications can be found here:

Minimum practical system requirements are as follows:

Intel Core i5 4400 Quad Core or AMD equivalent
500 GB HD
Open GL Graphics Card
Windows 7 64bit

Is there any chance I can upgrade my laptop to be able to use the program (ram, ssd, graphics' card)

or is another laptop needed?

Answer:Re: Satellite L505-13W - hardware upgrade

You can upgrade the RAM and HDD. The CPU upgrade is tricky and not supported by notebook manufacturers. Graphic card cannot be upgraded.

The Satellite L505-13W was equipped with Intel Core i5-430M 2.26 GHz (2 cores) CPU
You can also upgrade the RAM up to 8GB RAM and the HDD could be also upgraded to your favorite size.

The suggested minimum practical system requirements are very similar to the notebook hardware specifications and I think after the RAM upgrade you should be able to run the application.

Serial: no:1a511094k

The processor i have now is the i3 330

I want to upgrade to i7
Is this possible and can you link me where to buy the right one that is fitting to my laptop

Answer:Satellite L505-138 - CPU upgrade question

> Is this possible?
Maybe, in case the new CPU would be supported by chipset and BIOS, you?ve got good chances to upgrade the CPU.
But Toshiba as well as other notebook manufacturers don?t support such upgrade and therefore everything you do is your own risk!

First of all I would recommend you to get details about your chipset. On Intel ARK page you could check what CPUs would be supported by this chipset.
Fact is that this notebook series were equipped with the Intel Dual Core CPUs belonging to the Intel Arrandale CPU family. In case you want really try an new CPU, I would suggest you to choose one from this family.

But note: even if chipset would support new CPU, the BIOS might be one of the parts causing troubles. Unfortunately I did not find any information what CPUs might be supported by BIOS

Hey Diego,

If you are searching for drivers you should look on the Toshiba US page. There you can get all drivers for it:

The website shows already Windows 7 drivers and it seems that you can get all drivers from there. If not you can try the Vista drivers because the most of them are also work on Windows 7.

I wanted to install it on this laptop but there are no drivers listed under the driver page for the L505-10M 64-bit.

What was even more surprising was that there arent even any drivers available for Vista 64-bit.
Yet the laptop is sold with a preinstalled version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
So that means the drivers are there but havent been made available.

This bothers me alot. Can't get the Value Added Package and Flash Card support working.

Hope someone can clear this up for me.

The 64bit drivers are not available at this time?. I think you will have to wait until you could get the all the Win 7 drivers fro this unit?

As you said the notebook has been preinstalled with Win 7 64bit?. so why you don?t make a upgrade from Win 7 home premium to Ultimate???

I think this should function and could be good solution until the Win 7 drivers would be available?.

I have a 3 year old L505-13E pc and i'm having some problems with the fan controller. When i was watching a movie my pc shut down and it was very hot. I thought it was dust inside so i opened and cleaned it. It was very clean.

My fan is not working very good. It looks like it works by impulses, always turning on and shutting down. I have installed windows 7 with the original DVD's and the fan worked fine but when i started to install the windows updates the fan stopped working again.

Do i need a new motherboard or is it only a software problem?

Kind regards

Answer:Satellite L505-13E - Fan controller issues

Hi Jung

As far as I know cooling fan is controlled automatically and there is no some special software that controls cooling fan activity. Sensors placed on the mainboard register the temperature level and control cooling fan activity.

In advanced power settings you can find cooling method option and change options for cooling fan activity but I don?t think it will help you.

Maybe you should contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can help you with this.

I just bought the Toshiba L505-10J last week and I'm really satisfied with my choice, but when I start a game like Counter Strike Source or Risen I Have some strange Issues. The first 30-60 Minutes are Ok but then the Sound starts cracking and my Mouse (Razer Lachesis) stops moving when I'm holding a Key on the Keyboard (for example W for moving forward). When I switch to my desktop while playing this problem is gone (I opened Notepad pressed down W and moved the Mouse. No problems at all). When I Switch back it's there again. The only solution to this problem ist to reboot my Computer. Then I can play the next 30-60 min. before it starts all over.

I already reinstalled Windows 7 but the problem is still there.
When i use my Touchpad instead of my mouse it's the same. Can't play longer than 30-60 min...

This is not acceptable because I want to play games on my Notebook from time to time.

Hope someone can help me and sorry for my bad english, I'm from germany.

Answer:Satellite L505-10J - Can't play longer than 30-60 min

As I understood, this issue happens only playing games.
There is no problem using the notebook with other application.
Is it right?

hmm? how about graphic card driver update and BIOS update?
If newer versions are available then it would be advisable to update this!

Check it!

Hi guys,

recently purchased a Toshiba L505-10P and had to reinstall the OS to be able to use it in my language.
So far so good, I downloaded all the drivers and everything is working normally.

However, a question came to run the software and PC Diagnostic Tools Service Station have identified the notebook as follows:

Model: Satellite L500.

My question is: Is it right or something is wrong?
I updated the BIOS to the latest version v1.80 and it works perfectly except for doubt is.

I notice also that the Serial Number and Part confer with the label affixed to the product, only the model no.

Answer:Satellite L505-10P is identified as L500 - Why

The Satellite L505-10P belongs to the PSL3E series.
The Satellite L500 contains 6 different notebook sub models.

I have no idea why the L505 has been recognized as L500 but I would recommend downloading the drivers manually from the Toshiba European driver page and to choose the PSL3E series.

Then you would be on the safe side?

I purchased a new Satellite L505-10K laptop around a week and a half ago, and for a week it worked just fine.
During the last few days, however, I've experienced sudden BSODs many times a day.

I've tried restoring the system but that didn't solve the problem at all. Since the latests crashes, I've done the memory tests of Toshiba and Windows 7, and also run memtest86 overnight. There seem to be no problems with RAM.

Answer:Re: Constant BSOD on Satellite L505-10K

This is a Toshiba US notebook series. I searched a little bit on Toshiba US pages and I found some information that an preinstalled Win 7 on some small range of notebooks could cause a BSOD.
The solution is BIOS update.

So if you BIOS is not up to date, I would recommend updating it firstly!

Good luck

Do you have some problems with video performance?
Video drivers on mobile computers are designed for mobile usage and aren?t updates every mont like on desktop computers.

I have disk with 32 bit system recovery but my x64 partition got deleted.

I cant order recovery x64 becouse my laptop is too old and they dont have this in offer.

Maybe Toshiba Support have my version of system/ or drivers alone in archive and they can send me it ?
I would be happy with drivers alone for x64 becouse there are just few of them on website.

Almost a year after buying a Toshiba Satellite L505-13E, I started noticing temperature problems (it starts going at 70?, sometimes more, hitting 89?), even had the computer just power off (not the correct way through windows, instead, in a moment it's on, the other it's off when it hits 90?). I bought a cooling stand to maintain the computer at low temperatures, but the stand is not that good and the temperatures get levelled at 60? at best, but does solve the problem temporarily.

I usually have Skype (normally i'm not on a call so the cpu doesn't spike, but I do have the ocasional call), msn, irc, have a program to check mails regularly (thunderbird) and have firefox opened. At maximum the cpu spikes at 32% or similar with all of these opened (normally it's at 9-14% or so), so I don't think it's any problem related to massive processing of applications (but like anything else, sometimes it spikes to bigger percentages, but not that much or for so much time). I do use all of these at the same time. Because of the temperature problem, I installed an app to check regularly the state of the system.

As the problem is internally in the computer, I suppose it may be because the fan is stuck or something. I do clean the dust when it's time, but it also solves the problem temporarily (I don't open the computer case however, as it is under warranty and I don't want to void the warranty or break the computer). Answer:Satellite L505-13E - Overheat problem?

> As the problem is internally in the computer, I suppose it may be because the fan is stuck or something. I do clean the dust when it's time, but it also solves the problem temporarily (I don't open the computer case however, as it is under warranty and I don't want to void the warranty or break the computer). I'd like to find a more permanent solution without buying anything else as I don't think this is the correct solution for the problem.

The dust and debris are the main reasons why the notebook overheats. The dust inside the cooling modules prevents the fans from rotating faster which affects the cooling and leads to higher temperature.
So as you said; removing dust help you? and this should be done from time to time.

You say this is temporal solution for you? Hmm? I have no idea how you want to use the notebook is a dust free room? Only this would keep prevent dust from cooling modules.

I clean my notebook using compressed air spray. This helps and does not affect my warranty.

A month ago or so I had a problem when typing. Each time i pressed a letter it would, say K, it would come out K8, whenever i pressed back space it would present me with an =. Anyway I ended up updating the BIOS and this resolved the problem, until today. It was working fine then it started to mess about, it's not as bad as last time but it seems to be picking and choosing the keys to change at random. T

he back space did the = sign again and now thats stopped, i've managed to write this without there being a problem but i know the problem will be back. I have tried updating the BIOS but after unpacking the program I get the UEFI Winflash installer telling me that; The program will be closed, There is an error occured, please check the below items. BIOS version above 200. Battery capacity more than 10%. AC is attached.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Answer:Satellite L505 - Typing issue

Do you have this problem with preinstalled OS from Toshiba or did you make your own installation?

Regarding the BIOS:
Probably the newest version is already installed. Which one you have and what version you have found on Toshiba website?

Have you noticed the same behavior with an external keyboard?

Has anyone ever come up with a (cheap or free) solution to this? It happened to my L505-13Z a few days ago.

Sent it for service, but I'm afraid it's gonna cost me :S

Answer:Re: Satellite L505-13Z - Nothing else happens after BIOS update

Hi Cvalda,

If something went wrong during BIOS update you can do nothing to reflash the ROM module because special tools are necessary. This can only be done from an authorized service provider.

So it was good to sent it for service but let?s wait what the guys say. ;)

Hello everyone,

i got my new laptop and was totally happy with it, but there is this one problem i can't solve.
there are files on my laptop (i installed myself) that i can't delete, the system always tells me that the files are currently open or used by another system, but i have closed everything there is nothing open, can somebody help me with that?

Answer:Satellite L505 - Can't delete Files

Hi Lieselotte,

If you need help from users here you must be a little bit more detailed and exact... What files you want to delete exactly?
If you want to remove programs, use the software list in control panel > Add/Remove progams to delete the programs and files.

Furthermore make also sure that you have administrator rights.

i've some problems in my laptop

1- Fn key doesn't work with any service from Toshiba, only with the windows keys, this happened after the some windows critical updates(win 7 64 bits)
2- i didn't find my laptop' serial number or part number in Toshiba website.

please any one can help me

Answer:Satellite L505-13t - Fn key doesn't work

The FN buttons are controlled by Flash Card Support Utility.
You need to reinstall this tool.
But also the VAP (value added package) should be reinstalled.

I recommend firstly to remove the Flash Card and VAP from the system.
Then to reboot the unit and to clean the registry using CCleaner.
After that you should install both tools again; VAP and Flash Card Support Utility

I am configuring this laptop for my wife and the ouch pad fails to work in one of two ways:
1. The right button is inoperable
The scroll regions although set do not work
the pinch zoom although set does not work
The driver does not report any problem, the latest driver is installed and there are no IRQ conflicts reported
An external keyboard and mouse works fine.

2. Thescreen flashes as though the right touch pad button has been pressed and a contect menu appears
The external mouse and keyboard appear to work
The left button and navigation with the ntouchpad appear to work

I have taken care to adjust the various sensitivity parameters nd this does not alter the behaviour.

This problems seems to occure every 3 or 4 days when the lapto is used for 3 or 4 hours each day.

Re booting the lap top usually, but not always solves the problem.

I have had the lapt op for 2 weeks and it has not yet been used seriously.

Would I be correct to consider this to signify a hardware fault ?

Answer:Satellite L505-144 Touch pad malfunctions

I would like to know which operating system do you use. Is original Windows 7 preinstalled?

Anyway, test touch pad functionality properly. Normally all these additional option should have affect on touchpad functionality.

Nobody of us can say for sure that touchpad is defective and all we can do here on this forum to speculate what the problem can be.
In my opinion you should contact nearest Toshiba service provider, explain the situation and ask for help. They have diagnostic tools and can check touch pad functionality.

What do you think?

My laptop is Satellite L505-10z. I installed Windows 8 Pro and I notice that lots of drivers (especially TVAP) I downloaded from Toshiba support website (which are originally for Windows 7) not working! When will Toshiba release Windows 8 drivers? Will my model be included in the driver updates?

Answer:Satellite L505-10z - Win 7 tools are not compatible with Win 8

> downloaded from Toshiba support website (which are originally for Windows 7) not working!

Win 7 tools and utilities are made for Win 7 and not Win 8

> When will Toshiba release Windows 8 drivers? Will my model be included in the driver updates?
I think you should ask Toshiba. This is user to user community.
But I think Toshiba would start with driver support if Win 8 would be available OFFICIALLY on the market.

What's new in the BIOS Update v2.00 for Satellite l505-144

Answer:What's new in the BIOS Update v2.00 for Satellite L505-144

Hi mate

As far as I know Toshiba European driver page does not provide any details what has been changed in the BIOS.
But I found some details on Toshiba US page.
It seems that Fn+N+1/2/3/4 debug function has been removed in BIOS 2.0 to avoid keyboard abnormal behavior.

I have problems with my "FN" Button.

When I reboot my system, everythings gone alright with it but when I used about 5-10min my computer, I can't use FN any more.
I don't know why.

Anyone can helps me?

Answer:Satellite L505-13D - Can't use FN buttons after 5-10 minutes

Hi mauysz,

I also don?t know why this happens but you could try to reinstall Toshiba Value Added Package if you have Vista or Windows 7 installed. FN keys will be controlled by this tool and Flash Cards Support Utility. Everything you can download here: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

But remove the old tools firstly. Restart the notebook and then install VAP and then Flash Cards Support Utility.

I got a SATELLITE L505-13T from about one year, it was working perfect. One day i opened the laptop i found the windows not activated and i don't know why. I tried to activate it but i failed. I shut it down for one week to solve the problem. when I tried to open it again it wont open and i don't know why. It give me the toshiba logo, and then the screen goes black and gives this message:

This program contains proprietary and confidential information.
All rights reserved except as may be permitted by prior written

And freeze on this and wont start, when i press on the shut down button it closes.

Please help me in this problem,

Answer:Satellite L505 - Start up issue

Have you used original recovery image you got with your notebook or you have used own OS installation?
Do you have recovery DVD? if you install Windows using this disc you should have properly activated and valid licence and additional activation is not necessary.

I have a problem with my Satellite L505-10M.

Suddenly the fan is not starting any more and because of that the laptop gets quickly overheated and shuts down. I installed Windows 7 on it myself, already quite a lot of times, and this time it was 2 weeks ago, while it just happened tonight. I did not install anything new and neither did I do something special with it, it just doesn't start the fan any more.

I checked this forum, couldn't find anything, searched and could only find problems with Linux and the fan but not Windows (it is not starting at bios startup either).

If anyone has a thought, a similar experience or a solution it would be really helpfull

Answer:Satellite L505-10M - Fan is not starting anymore

If it is not spinning at all, then it sounds like the fan is faulty or there is a bad connection.

I'd send the laptop to an Authorized Service Center for repair.

Hi! I have problem with my keyboard. I dont know why but when i write with some keys apprear 40 with the letters and numbers. With0 the space appears the zero (0)

Can0 you help me please?

Answer:Re: Satellite L505-13N - Some keys appear when I write something

Hi buddy,

Since when do you notice this behavior and does it also happen if you use an external keyboard? Using an external keyboard you can determine if it?s hardware or software problem so I think this would be the easiest and fastest way to check what is wrong exactly.

Indicated by TEMPRO software delivered with my Satellite L505-138 I updated the BIOS version but halfway the process stopped and fan kept running at high speed and nothing happened anymore. After one hour the only option I had left was to disconnect power and remove the battery. The laptop does not do anthing anymore now and refuses to startup.

Who can advise me what to do?

Answer:Re: Satellite L505-138 - Nothing happens after BIOS update

Usually if after BIOS update the notebook doesn?t start and the update wasn?t installed successfully the ROM module must be reflashed. The problem is this can only be done from an authorized service provider because they have special diagnostic tools especially for every Toshiba notebook.

So I would recommend contacting the guys and ask for help. I believe this problem can be clarified very easy: > Support & Downloads > Find an authorized service provider

Good luck! :)

I just bought 2 months ago my first new laptop Satellite L505-141 and use Windows 7 64bit. The laptop crushes (turn off Suddenly) 3 times a day and I dont know why! After it's happen I cant turn it on unlees I plug out and conent again the electric cable.

Please help me, I dont know what cuses the laptop to crush.

Answer:Satellite L505-141 - Crash 3 times a day

Hi chen,

Do you use the preinstalled Windows version from Toshiba or your own installation?
Have you updated any drivers?

And when does it happen exactly? When you play games, surf in the Internet or something else?

To be honest it?s not easy to say something about this problem but maybe your notebook is overheating. Therefore you should clean your notebook using compressed air spray. You can do this without dissembling the computer so it takes few minutes only. :)

Someone know how to update the ATI Mobility Radeon? HD 5165 driver?
In Toshiba website we only have one driver ans it is from 05/03/10, and in the ATI website they don't have suport for Toshiba laptops!
This is really anoying... why Thoshiba laptop's can not be suported by ATI website!?
The drivers they give us is out-of-date.
If anyone have better drivers, say it. I apreciate!

Answer:Satellite L505-13E - ATI drive update

Toshiba says to use drivers from Toshiba page as they are modified to support overheating protection...
But you can try to install Ati driver from the ATI website from device manager. Go to the device manger-display adapter-update driver. Choose the downloaded file and try to install. i don't know, if you can update it as i haven't checked it myself
