Satellite L670-153: problem with a 4Gb SONY mass storage

Question: Satellite L670-153: problem with a 4Gb SONY mass storage

I have a satellite L670-153 laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. When I conect a 4Gb SONY USB mass storage, Windows mount the USB mass storage. But after some minutes, the USB mass storage is unmount and mount and unmount indefinitely.
I update the bios and the chipset driver but I still have the problem.

Preferred Solution: Satellite L670-153: problem with a 4Gb SONY mass storage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite L670-153: problem with a 4Gb SONY mass storage

And what now?
Can you test functionality with other 4GB USB stick? Just to see if other brands will be recognized properly. Does the problem persist when you use it on other PC with the same operating system?

I have 2 SanDisk and 1 Toshiba USB stick and all of them are recognized properly on different notebooks?

"unknown device" shows in devicemanager
i restored system to factory default.. and also updated BIOS.
i tried to reset registry .. as googled down the solution.. where i set in USBSTOR the key START to 3 (to enable usb storage).
but got no luck.

I have a strange issue, at least it seems strange to me!

After having issues with my last laptop running Vista where excessive space was being used by shadow storage I immediately checked the set-up on my new Satellite Pro L670 running Win 7 64 bit. Pleasingly it was defaulted to a MAX 10gb setting which was fine as the HD is 500gb, However a few days later I found that a few gb of space had gone so checked again in vssadmin to find it was using 12Gb even though max was still at 10Gb!

I ran a resize command to size back to 10Gb max which immediately reduced the used space down to about 8Gb but couple of days later it was back at 12Gb!

How can this happen?

I've today checked in 'System Protection' from control panel which was repoorting only 4.5Gb was being used even though vssadmin list shadowstorage reported 12gb! I've reduced the MAX space using the slider in 'System Protection' to 6.99Gb and will see if Windows takes any notice this time.

Anyone had similar experience?

Hi everyone,

My laptop is SONY VAIO VGN-S67TP

I can't find the drivers of NVIDIA(Geforce Go 6400) & Fn & Mass Storage Contorller for my windows 7.

Please help me...I tried to go on Nvidia website but i couldn't find the Geforce Go 6400 driver.

I also tried some ways to fix my Fn & Mass Storage Contorller problems(ex.update), but they still don't work.

Otherwise, windows 7 OS is working very well on my laptop...

I know my laptop is a little bit old, but it's still working very good.

Please help me...

I have spent weeks trying to fix this and am ready to admit I need help that isn't anywhere online.

First of all let me make a contribution: Do not do a clean install of Windows 7 on a VAIO with built in recovery discs because they will no longer be detected and you will not ever be able to use them again.

Here's a list of my most pressing problems:

1. I use to be able to connect my laptop to a display with VGA just with the Fn key. Now I can't and there is a new Intel TV Wizard and Windows Media Center to deal with. The Wizard does not even list VGA in it's connections and the WMC does but does not detect it is connected. The funny thing is a I can connect a terrible S Video cable with the Wizard no problem.

2. CD/DVD drive is not working. I have read everything online and had remote assistance to no avail. The funny thing is I had it briefly working with a Vista drive installed in compatibility mode but then Windows blocked the driver. The drive will open from my computer and will run but the DVD will not be detected. 7 does not appear to like to detect things. I also noticed in the Device Manage the Mass Storage Controller is missing and will not update.

3. The built in recovery discs are not detected. Would have been nice to restore it to OE even with Vista at this point.

4. The built in web cam is not working.

Thanks for having this forum and I would appreciate help from anyone who can relate.

Got a 8 gb usb that doesnt show up in "my computer" in my acer netbook. It does show up in device manager as "mass storage". When I click this, it says the drivers are not installed. When I try to install or update drivers, it says "the best driver is already installed for this device" This same usb does work in other laptops, but in device manager it shows up as "usb mass storage". Other 8 gb usbs also work in this acer netbook and they also show up as "usb mass storage". For some odd reason this one 8 gb usb does not work on just the acer netbook and shows up as "mass storage" instead of "usb mass storage". Any ideas how to fix this? Everything laptop is windows 7

Answer:Difference btwn mass storage & USB mass storage Definition

"It would take a while to get 8 gb of data out of the usb"It shouldn't take too long, just make a folder on your hard disk and copy/paste the whole lot into it. Then you can format the flash drive on another computer. If it then works properly you just copy/paste the contents of the folder you saved back into the flash drive.I'm assuming we are right that this is a "flash (or pen)" drive - a small stick, as it is only 8 GB. This sort of thing: term USB is general and can mean, for example, a small USB external hard disk or just a reference to the USB socket itself.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Answer:Mass storage Vista drivers for Satellite Pro M70

Toshiba driver page does not provide any Vista drivers for the Satellite Pro M70!
Only the BIOS and the BT Vista driver are available for this notebook.

I checked the XP section and there are Cardbus Driver and Chip Set Utility available.
I assume these both applications are needed.
I?m not sure if you will be able to install these utilities on Vista but a trying is for free.

If the both applications will not run I assume you have to abstain from usage of memory card reader on Vista.

I doubt you will find a driver for "Mass Storage Device?.
Why, because such device is only supported by Vista and therefore the XP drivers don?t exist.

Check this Toshiba doc:
[No Windows XP driver for PCI Memory Controller|]

There you can find this:
+After installing Windows XP there could be a yellow exclamation mark by a "PCI Memory Controller" or *"Mass Storage Controller"* in the device manager.+
+This device is likely the Turbo Memory former Robson module.+
+This hardware will only supported by Windows Vista.+

I have a Satellite A100-680 (PSAA9E) that has been running XP Home for about two years. Very satisfied!
I decided to upgrade to Vista Business, which worked very well (actually impressed by easyness of install).

The machine works perfectly , there is only one irritating factor - under Device Manager - Other devices I have some thing called Mass Storage Controller and it does not have a driver loaded. I have been trying to locate one, but I have no idea what to look for.

Vista at some point suggested some Texas Instrument PCI device, but..... let me put it this way..... luckily I did not have to reinstall since I had made an image backup of the disks.

Can anyone give me a hint what I should look for.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Unrecognised Mass Storage Controller on Satellite A100-680

Really nice, that your Win Vista installation worked so good.
For this unrecognised device, I too think that it is the Texas Instrument card reader.

Go there:

You will be not able to find this driver on the Toshiba recovery CD because the recovery CD contains only the Image files.
The whole Windows OS, Toshiba drivers and utilities are packed in this image file but this file cannot be unzipped!

So if you need the driver please visit the Toshiba European driver page, choose your notebook series from the download form and download the right driver!

Best regards

Hi, please help.

I've just upgraded my laptop from Windows Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit.

I've managed to find all the drivers apart one: The 'Mass storage controller' driver (yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager).

I don't know where to look for this driver.

Any help would be appreciated. Al

Answer:Satellite Pro P300: Need Vista 64bit 'Mass storage controller' driver

I assume you didn?t search in forum for similar questions? Is it right?
I think I?m right because I searched in the forum and found this Toshiba FAQ doc.

+No Windows XP driver for PCI Memory Controller+

Here you can find this text passage:
After installing Windows XP there could be a yellow exclamation mark by a "PCI Memory Controller" or *"Mass Storage Controller"* in the device manager.

This device is likely the Turbo Memory former Robson module.
This hardware will only supported by Windows Vista.
Therefore there is no Windows XP driver.

Now everything should be clear ;)

Answer:Satellite A210-16G Mass Storage Controller driver for Windows Vista 32-bit

If I were you I would take look to the Drivers Download site of the Toshiba mainpage, because there you can find everything you need.
The mass storage controller can either be the HDD controller or the SD-card controller. I would download both of them.

Here?s a direct link to the Drivers page:

I have a "Toshiba Satellite A100-049" laptop which has the capability to support 4Gb memory (but came with 2Gb) and I am unable to find a few drivers for this on Tosiba's website. I have put a second hard disk into the laptop (so well away from my normal Vista 32-Bit installation) and am testing Windows 7 64-Bit. I currently have 2Gb memory. I have most drivers but need:

* Mass Storage Controller
* Unknown Device - TOS1901
* According to "Action Center" I also need to install "Intel Management Engine Interface". I suspect this is related to the Mass Storage Controller.

I've searched Intel's website but without knowing what chipset etc... my laptop uses, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

When I installed Vista 32-Bit I had to install the Value Added Package and Supervisor Password Utlity.
The trouble is while I've managed to find a Value Added Package 64-Bit I cannot find a Supervisor Password Utility 64-Bit.

I understand "Unknown Device - TOS1901" mean Supervisor Password Utility.

Where can I find 64-Bit Drivers for this and also the Mass Storage Controller?
Even if they're for another model (but install fine).

p.s - If I cannot find drivers I'll be sending a letter of complaint to Toshiba for selling a laptop capable of 4Gb Memory but absolutely no way of actually getting this. Toshiba's responce awhile ago (when I asked) was to make do with 3Gb on 32-Bit Windows. It's not exactly satisfac... Read more

Hi to all,

My notebook works under Windows XP Pro SP1 (French version) and I wished to extend its storage capacity with a USB hard disk.

I purchased a first one (80 Gb) with an external power supply which never worked properly and I discarded it.

Now I purchased a new light unit (40 Gb - USB powered) which does not install successfully.

The problem may be that in the hidden units of my configuration, I still find the old mass storage with its 3 generic volumes (partitions) which I can abslolutely not delete from the configuration (uninstall does not work).

Can anybody help me ? .... many thanks in advance.

I've run a USB Card Reader for a long time without any problems. However today I connected a USB Stick (2GB with an unusual format) and immediately lost my additional Drives for SD Cards and so on. I tried going to Device Manager and uninstalling all USB's. On a restart these were correctly recognised except for the Card Reader (reported as Unknown Device and further investigation showed no Driver was necessary). I then tried a Restore Point but that didn't work either. All my USB devices now work except for Card Readers (I've tried 2) and USB Memory Sticks.Any idea how I can recover these items?

Can anyone help me? I'm running windows xp sp 2 and a friend of mine has let me borrow his PB store&save 3500. The 3500 is an external usb, 500gb HDD. I have saved files to this external hard drive but when i plug it into my pc only some of the files show. The external drive is FAT32 and my pc is NTFS, ( im not sure whether or not that matters). Everything was ok with the Ex HDD before, it just doesn't seem to work on my pc. Can anyone help me please.

Answer:Mass Storage Problem

Have you gotten all the files you want off from the drive?

Try going to Start > Run, and typing:

At the command prompt, type:

chkdsk X: /f

where X: is the drive letter of the external drive.

If that doesn't help, try chkdsk X: /r

It makes no difference what file system it is.

hello all i have what i consider a hard problem but someone here can help me with. i puchased a usb 2.0 mass storage h/d. been using it for a while with no problems, i let a friend borrow it for loading some files, format and reload saved files. he told me that he installed what he wanted to keep, then formatted his hardrive with mine still plugged in. when he attempted to use it after the reloade windows would not allicate a drive letter for the drive. i think the hardrive just needs formatted and re-partitioned, but i can't figure out how too do it because there is no signature to the drive. i have tried usb boot drivers for dos and got an error usb target not found. the drive does show up in devise manager but i can't access from windows. i am running windows 2k pro on service pack 4 , the format was done with win xp pro corperate. all i want too no is how too resetup the drive. any answers would be appreciated. thanks THE NUT.

Yesterday, I was transfering files to my mass storage device. suddenly the sys reboot its self. After that, my mass storage device and my flash memory card are detected by window as Unknown devices. Same, problem occurs, even I plug it in other usb ports. So, I try to plug my mass storage device on another pc, it works perfectly.

what have I try so far:
(1) I try both front usb 1.1 and back usb 2.0, but neither of them work.
(2)I have reinstall my window for three times, I even try my friend's XP CD.
(3) load bios' (system optimal), then reinstall again.

The system does have usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf in the /window/inf folder, but the system does not have usbstor.sys in the /window/sys 32/driver folder. Plus I cant find usbstor folder in regedit at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\
*even though I reinstall my window(format)

possible causes:
(1)someone tells me that it is a power surge, but is that possible that all my four usb ports suffed from a power surge?
(2)is importing usbtor files to regedit a solution, if yes then how?

I know it is very strange case, can anyone help me!

Thank you all!

I plug my camera in the same usb, it recognizes it as a usb device(not as camera), but I can fix it with my camera driver.
if I plug in my usb mouse, it works perfectly.
When I plug in anything like storage (ipod,or flash memory bar, or mass storage) it reconigzes it as unknow device.

HI, I'm having a problem with my mass storage devices. I updated my bios on my Asus z87 pro motherboard and since I did any of my usb sticks or WD My Passport wont open... PC says it tries to download drivers but can't. It sees the unlock disc for WD My Passport but wont let me open it and has the yellow exclamation mark by it in the device manager. As for the usb sticks.. they don't even show up even though they do in the bios page and they make a sound when you slot one in to a usb port.. so I don't think its the ports. especially as other items like flight yoke, pedals and mouse etc all work in the various usb ports.. its just the mass storage devices. I have looked at the files you suggested might not be there (as above) and all are. so bit lost as to what to do.

Any ideas?

Answer:Having a problem with my mass storage devices

Hello, Stevey!

I think the issue you are facing is due to faulty installation of drivers.
The yellow exclamation mark in the device manager indicates that there's some kind of system or driver issue.
You mentioned you updated the bios on your motherboard, but did you update the drivers for it as well?

I suggest to take a look at these links:

In case you forgot the motherboard drivers update:
You can try running the fixit from the following Microsoft article:
Another thing you can try is running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check if it works:
Or refer to this WD article that explains how to change the drive letter of the external drive and see if it helps:

If you need further assistance, let me know.
Hope this helps.

My 4 gig Super Talent flashdrive works fine on other computers, and it USED to work on my Windows xp, but suddenly it wants me to "install" it using the Hardware Wizard. And when I do try to install it, it gives me this message:

I STOPPED Installing, because i was scared.

I've had this flashdrive for seven months and it never showed me that message the very first time I plugged it in on my computer. It was instantly recognized and it worked great.
But that message started showing up after I installed the Logitech Camera driver for my webcam. My flashdrive wont show up in "my computer" and "disc management" anymore, but it shows on device manager as "usb (with yellow exclamation point) And when I try the "Safely Remove Hardware" before plugging it out, the "mass storage device" is not even there as if my flashdrive is not even plugged.
I tried unplugging the webcam, then plugging the flashdrive then rebooting, I even unplugged my keyboard, but nothing seems to work.I tried every USB ports on my computer too.

Im thinking of uninstalling the webcam driver, but i also need the webcam. Is there anyway that i could make my flashdrive work with my webcam, if not together, then at least when my webcam is unplugged?

Please help I really need my flashdrive to work again on this computer.

Answer:USB Mass storage Device problem

Plug the Flash Drive in if you get the Hardware Wizard, let it install. If you do not get the hardware wizard and the device is not listed in My Computer, then go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In the Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers, if you have a Unknown Device, then right click it and uninstall it. Now pull the drive out and put it back in. Go through the hardware wizard if asks.

hey there,

i have a problem with my 1 G USB removable drive, I am not able to explore or open it, I tried all methods to open the device but instead it gives me (please insert a disk into drive H) which is the message usually appears when trying to open an empty CD Rom.

In My Computer the drive looks normal and the computer recognizes it as a removable disk not a CD Rm and under properties it shows it as a removable disk but both the free and used space shows zero as if it was an empty CD Rom.

I tried to format it using the original format methods and it gives me (there is no disk in drive H, insert a disk and try again), the same goes when trying to format it using Dos Command Prompt.

This problem appeared immediately when I got a new USB Hub with five USB slots and after trying the removable drive on it simultaneously with a USB modem inserted on the Hub.

Every USB device I got is working fine on that hub including an extra removable Drive that I got, except for the above mentioned drive which I tried on the Hub for the first time and did not work since then. This drive also gives me the same problem and messages on other computers that I tried to run or format the drive on them, some running with vista, others with xp.

I tried many methods to solve this problem including, changing drive letters, restarting the computer, and not using the USB Hub and others,

Any help?

I've just got a StarTech dock station for the Hard Drive (with Esata and USB 3.0 ports). When I first used it first time. The first thing I use is ESATA port and ran without a problem (run CrystalDiskInfo and CrstalDiskMark to test) and also I format the drive.

But when I try USB 3.0 port is won't response well (using express card). For example it found new hardware and open the drive - but then I ran CrystalDiskInfo or CrstalDiskMark it won't open unless I disconnect the USB then the program will open after I disconnect the USB. I've try copy a file across nope crash or stop working. So I've try using USB 2 to see if not the USB 3.0 same problem but gone back to Esata port work fine!!!

So I’ve try on another laptop to see if not the Dock problem. And USB 2 work!!!! even USB 3.0 work using Express card so it not the dock problem (The laptop is running Win XP 32 bits).

I also got WD passport and book (1tb/3tb) and they both work fine on my laptop plus the USB 3.0.

So what I'm doing wrong? I can't pin the problem on my laptop with USB issues with the dock station. Any idea?? Don't really want to re install win 7 to see if that fix it.

Any help for this one please?Windows XP service pack 2.For several months now I've been getting this message:"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive."I click on 'Cancel' each time and everthing starts OK.I took the computer to a local computer repairer and he said it was a bug in Windows and couldn't be fixed, so I've been putting up with it because it was only a small inconvenience.Today the computer takes much longer to boot up and in 'My Computer' the flash card drives don't show. However, I no longer getting the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive."It did the same thing several days ago, I tried System Restore and that didn't help. I did a registry clean up and it started working OK, but that hasn't worked this time. If I go to hardware - device manager, the USB Mass storage device shows that it is not working. I have right clicked on it and tried to update the drivers, they seem OK. I have then right clicked on it , clicked on Uninstall and then restarted the computer. It shows that a new USB device has been detected and the computer starts up slowly. But the flash card drives still don't show.If I click on USB Mass storage device properties it shows the message ?This device cannot start. (Code 10)?.

Answer:USB Mass storage device problem

Start in safe mode by pressing F8 repeatedly before the XP logo, select Safe Mode, go into Device Manager again, select View/Show Hidden Devices, delete your USB device (probably called something like USB Mass Storage Device), then all USB Root Hub entries, then any USB entries like Generic USB Hub, and reboot. If Windows still doesn't detect the device properly, do the same as before, but remove the USB Host Controller(s) too - the Root Hub/Storage Device entries must be deleted before you delete the controller entries though.

I’ve been busy with my computer. In the last week I’ve installed new monitor, have had to take out my AGP 8x card and put it back in and I’ve had to take my PC2700 512mb stick of RAM out and put it back in.

So I might have jostled something in my computer.

I have three drives on my computer, a WD 20 IDE drive in C (win98se), a 40GB Seagate IDE in D (WinXPsp2), and a USB mass storage device. The USB device is 250 GB.

My USB device has three partitions, G, H, and I.

I’ve noticed in the last couple of days some knocking coming out of my usb drive. So I’ve taken it out and put it back in. It is connected to my computer via a USB to IDE cable.

Usually this does the trick but today I had some really bad knocking. I took it out and rearranged the power supply wires.

Now my usb device doesn’t show up at all on my computer.

When I am in Win98 and plug the usb cord in, it tries to show up but I get a yellow dotted line at the top of my computer screen and then it reboots.

When I plug my usb device in WinXPsp2 my computer automatically reboots.

My usb drive is less than a year old. I purchased it in December from Tiger direct. I also purchased a three year extneded warranty. It is a WD Caviar 250.

It seems to early for the drive to wear out.

Also, something else: When I reboot my computer I see the notation on my DOS screen

Hey everyone, gotta few questions...

I'm trying to turn off my external HDD for the night and when I use "Safely Remove Hardware" I sometimes (like now, for example) get the error "The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later."

Nothing is writing to the HDD, the light is on and just solid green (blinks orange when it's being read). When I go into Safely Remove Hardware the device listed is "USB Mass Storage Device." When I click Stop I get three more choices:
(1) USB Mass Storage Device
(2) Generic volume - (H: )
(3) Maxtor 6 Y160P0 USB Device

Trying any of the three produces the same result. Does anyone know if this can be fixed from Windows or do I need to reboot and just try again whenever this happens? Also, how bad is it to just turn off an external HDD without going through Safely Remove Hardware?

Oh yeah, XP Home SP2.

Is there a way or shortcut that I can use to find which programs or windows are still using the Drive?

Will potential problems result if I just do a 'hard' close-down?, ie >Start>Switch Off button ='Closes all open Programs, Shuts down Windows, turns off Computer'.

Will the same apply if I do a >Start>Restart, close-down and restart procedure?
I have attempted to Safely Remove Drive M:\ via the Icon in the Notification Tray, and through Device Manager, but the results as shown above are the same.

Here is what I tried so far in order and I still get the same message.

Right clicked on the thumbdrive and clicked on properties - device working fine but listed the file system as raw, tried to update the drivers but no new ones available. Tried roll back of drivers and did not roll back.
Rebooted the desktop - same message.
Plugged the same thumbdrive into my labtop - works just fine on the labtop (windows XP SP2) and on the desktop I have at work (Pentium 3 windows XP SP1).
Tried different USB ports on my desktop computer. I do have a D-Link USB 1.1 hub attached. I plugged the thumbdrive directly into the USB ports in the back of the computer - same message.
Formatted the USB drive on the labtop and then plugged into my desktop.
Purchased a new USB thumbdrive Sandisk - same message.
Device manager says the device is working fine. Tried to update the drivers - told me that there isn't a better match.
Deleted the USB drivers in the Device manager, reboot, let Windows reinstall the drivers - same message.

I recently received a Western Digital 120GB Passport drive ( When I plug it into my computer running Vista Ultimate, Windows doesn't automatically identify the necessary drivers. I end up with an "Unknown Device" for which Vista can find no drivers.

I have successfully attached it to my brother's Alienware laptop (running Vista Home Premium) and it instantly recognizes it and installs the necessary drivers, which are found in c:\windows\system32\drivers. I've also had the same success on my sister's Vaio running Vista (I'm not sure which version, I don't think it's Ultimate). My version of Windows has the exact same driver files as listed on their computers, but even when I point the driver wizard to the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder, it is unable to find them.

I read a couple of reports that indicated this is a problem with the INFCACHE.1 file found in c:\windows\inf --

as well as

-- however I've attempted this fix about a dozen times without any success.

At first, I deleted INFCACHE.1 and Vista didn't regenerate it when I reinstalled another, working USB device (I tried several, including my Viewsonic built-in monitor webcam and my keyboard). I found a fix on Microsoft's support site for this:

Answer:USB Mass Storage Driver Problem (INFCACHE.1)

Hmm... it seems like the only thing that will really solve this is a reinstall of Vista. That's about the last thing I want to do.

Also, since I have a Vista Upgrade CD but not my original XP CD, will I even be able to reinstall?

This to me is the most annoying feature in Windows. Why can't Windows tell me what programs or windows are using the device so I know what to close? Many times, I have tried closing all programs and windows that might be using the device. I even closed programs and windows that I was fairly certain were not using the device just in case they were. In resource monitor, the Disk 1 (E Queue Length shows no activity and nothing is listed as using the drive in the Disk tab.

I can go into an Elevated Command Prompt and run Diskpart, select the volume associated with the USB Mass Storage Device, and run a remove dismount of the volume, and it still claims the drive is currently in use... How can it be in use if it no longer has a handle and has been dismounted?

I have reason to believe this is either the security software preventing removal of the device, or Windows itself. After some time, I am able to remove the device. This happened to me most recently on a computer with Norton 360 installed, which is supposed to stop all scanning when the system is no longer idle. Windows also was not indexing the drive for faster searches.

Any ideas what causes this behavior? Any suggestions on how to remove the drive if it happens in the future?

Answer:Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device

There are some third party Shareware Programs that identify the handles. USB Safely Remove is one such that I was using with XP but have discontinued in Windows 7. There is a provision for forced removal too but I have never used it.

Not being able to remove a pen drive is very annoying but I wait, sometimes till I have shut down the computer.

The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try Stopping the device again later.

I've tried stopping it later, and there is no data streaming off of it or being saved, but I still can't remove it, any ideas whats wrong here ?

Answer:Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device
I tried Unlocker 1.9.0. It worked.
Seems to me to be a workaround rather than a fix, but that was the best advice from Microsoft. I have noticed that after renaming devices this does not happen anymore. This could be coincidence, but has held true for several flash, cf, usb hdd devices that I have used.

More from the "I Hate Vista" department:

I'm posting this in the Vista forum because I don't remember ever having this problem, especially to this extent, when running XP or 2000.

Vista simply will not let go of my USB flash drives most of the time. I have to either log off or shut down the computer to remove it. It doesn't matter if I wait five minutes or fifty minutes; the result is the same.

I open Task Manager and shut down all running programs, I go through the disconnect procedure repeatedly and Vista just will not let go.

Is there a fix for this; it's really getting aggravating?

Answer:Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device

It may be being "Indexed" for the search options or scanned by your AV program.

After attempting to 'Eject' my flash drive (all programs closed), I got this message. I've just transferred lots of data over to it using Synctoy, and do not want to risk pulling it and potentially damaging what's on there. In the past I've pulled these drives regardless of message, but ended up with various empty (0-1KB) picture files strewn everywhere.

The drive is still plugged in, I want to learn how to remove this flash drive safely. Can someone help?

Answer:Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device

The simplest way: Restart Windows.
In closing down Windows will force an end to the writing process and "safely remove" the drive before shutting down to restart.

After a year of successful operation, I cannot get a Safe Removal Message for a Seagate Free Agent Go following a notice that the generic device cannot be stopped. Instead, I get a message to unplug the device and upon doing so to troubleshoot. Troubleshooting tells me the device is not properly working and problems with PnP devices. Even when I reboot the same thing happens. The Mass Storage Device Properties box shows it is set to quick removal. Is this a problem with the Seagate Device or the operating system or both? Would a replacement storage device have the same problem? As of now I can't safely remove.

I have an old Lumix digital DSLR camera that uses an SD card. i don't have a USB cable for the camera so I've been using a USB adapter for the SD card. I'm usually very avid about ejecting the SD card / USB drives properly, but I think I might have forgotten when I was in a hurry once.

Now I get the message that I need to format the drive before it can be read. I have already tried formatting the SD card with the camera and with the computer using the USB adapter. However, at other times I have managed to get it to copy the images. once I even got the error message "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" but I have not been able to reproduce that message.

The SD card works perfectly fine on my husband's computer with the same USB adapter.

I have also tried using a different digital camera to transfer the pictures. Now when I use this other digital camera (Sony Cybershot), it seems to be trying to mount it 3 times. The first two times I get the message that no new images were found. The last time it copies the new images just fine.

I believe it's some sort of drive recognition error rather than a problem with the SD card since it works in other camera's and computers.

I've already tried deleting the mass storage drive from devices, and setting Windows back using system restore. Other USB sticks work just fine.

I'm running Windows 7 on a 64 bit computer, with two front built in USB ports.

any ideas on how I can fix this?

So i just built my computer and i'm having issues installing Vista. I go thru setup till the point where i have to choose a mass storage device. My Hard drive is the Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM.
I get to the Where do you want to install windows page and the box under the title is empty. On the bottom there is a "No Drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation".When i Click Load Driver, i get a box stating: "To install the device driver needed to acess your hard drive, insert the installation media containing the driver files, and then click OK. Note: The Installation media can be a floppy disk, cd, dvd, or USB flash drive". There is a Browse and rescan thing on this page with the title Select the driver to be installed. When i hit browse i see :
Floppy Disk Drive(A
Local Disk(C

If i click Local Disk it says: You need to format the disk in drive C: before you can use it. Do You want to format it? Format disk - cancel

When i click format disk i get: Windows can't format C:\
Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again. For more information, search help for read only files and how to change them.

AND thats about where im at. Help plz

Answer:Problem ejecting USB Mass Storage Device - error

There are a number of different circumstances that prevent an external device from being able to be safely ejected.

First, take a look at these tutorials + 3rd party apps:
Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device – from Microsoft
Try using Process Monitor to find out what process is stopping the drive from being ejected.
Download USB Safely Remove Free Trial - USB device manager, a must have tool for active USB user - Softpedia

Then, try this method: To eject an external drive or memory stick from Windows Explorer single-click (highlight) Computer or My Computer in the left-hand column Navigation Pane so that all of the drives are displayed in the right-hand column. In the right-hand column, right-click on the drive with the memory stick and select "Safely Eject."
Give it a second or two, and the drive icon with the memory stick should 'disappear' --- allowing you to safely remove the memory stick. If there's any problem with removing it, you'll get an error message displaying the reason.

You can also set it to "Quick Removal" (in Policies), so that you do not have to worry about safe removal, but they will read/write a bit slower.

You can also enable your Group Policy - Open Device Manager, Disk drives, disk in question – Go to Policies, Write Caching Policy and check Enable Write Caching on the Device.

If you get an ERROR MESSAGE not allowing you to eject an external drive or memory stick: In Windows Explorer try removin... Read more

I have an Acer R3610 (so everything is via USB). When I plug in an I/O Magic disk drive, I get an error "Device driver software was not successfully installed".

I had earlier tried to fix this situation by going to Device Manager and deleting all drivers under USB controllers. When I rebooted everything re-installed except for USB Mass Storage Device.

So I need some new ideas.

Answer:Problem installing USB mass storage device driver

Rather implausibly I used their site search to look for an I/OMagic drive, hoping to get a listing for drivers, they have no results for it !
But depending on the model number you might try here to get an updated driver version. I/O Magic Drivers - I/O Magic Windows Drivers

Hello all,

Lately i bought 8 gb of ram for my toshiba.

its in 2 sticks 4gb, "integral" IN3V4GNYBGI , DDR3 1066 mhz SODIMM.

Bios is seeing all this ram properly, but after possibility to enter bios, laptop is freezing.

I have then black screen and "_" cursor blinking in upper left corner.

I've tried changing ram positions, but it didnt help.
Also i tried with my old sticks, and figured that it boots with 2gb old stick in main slot, but it won't boot with 4gb stick in main slot.

I've got bios update from 02.2011 , both sticks were checked with memtest and they seem fine.

any1 have ideas how to make it run on 2x 4gb sticks?

thanks for all answers

Answer:Satellite Pro L670-14P - problem with 8GB RAM

In my opinion the issue is related to comatibilty problems between RAM modules and the notebook.
You should test other modules from different manufacturers?
The Kingston modules should work properly? I upgraded two of my notebooks with Kingston modules and this worked perfectly?

I also read here in the forum that some users had problems with RAM upgrade and after switching to Kingston the problems had gone?

View Solution.

Answer:problem during install win7 missing mass storage driver

If you need drivers, please follow these steps:1. In the Run box type devmgmt.msc.2. Unknown devices would be listed as such and marked out with a yellow question mark.3. Select the unknown device or other device for which you need drivers and right click to access Properties.4. In the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id  or Hardware ID from the drop down.5. An alphanumeric string like this PCI\VEN_1217&DEV_7130&SUBSYS_012F1025&REV_01\4&6B16D5B&0&33F0 is the identification marker for the device.6. Please provide this number so that we can suggest the appropriate driver.

I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 7 64bit running.
I recently bought an DJ mixer with midi control an allen and heath xone db2. When I connect it to the usb port it works for a minute and then stops working. I tried all the usb ports and have the correct driver installed but nothing works.
Next to the mixer I have an allen and heath xone k2 midi controller and this one works fine on my Toshiba laptop.

I also have another laptop (Medion) and the mixer works fine on that laptop, so the device is not broken.
Anyone got an answer to my problem.

Answer:Satellite L670-143 - USB or midi problem

Just one question: do you have any other problems using the USB ports?
I mean do other USB devices work properly?
If you have no other problems using the USB ports in conenction with other USB devices, I don?t think that this issue is related to notebook.

However, it can be always an compatibility problem between two devices but in such case you should check midi mixer manufacturer page for some details.

From my opinion you should check if you installed the software properly.
I read the XoneDB2 user manual and it mentions some important details (page 28 PC installation).

1? Connect the XONE:DB2 to your mains electricity supply and switch on.
Do not connect the DB2 to the PC at this time.
2? Open the Drivers folder and run Setup.exe.
3? Select your preferred language
4? Select Install the driver
5? When prompted, connect the DB2 to the PC with the USB lead.
6?If this window appears, select ?Install?.
7?The USB driver will now install.
8? If this window appears, select ?Install?.
9? Reboot to complete installation.

+The installation process may differ slightly dependant upon Operating System and+
+Security Software.+
+*Note:* Always use the same USB port with your XONE:DB2. When installing on a MS+
+Windows system, the drivers will be associated with the USB port that you are currently plugged into. If you attempt to use the DB2 with another USB port, or without installing the drivers at all, the system may work but with degraded performance (XP, Vi... Read more

I bought a brand new Satellite L670-1JQ especially for the blu-ray an HDMI-out. I also have a 42" flatscreen with HDMI-in.
The meaning was to play a blu-ray on the laptop and to transfer the video to the flatscreen.
When I connect the laptop to the flatscreen, I can duplicate or extend the desktop. That's not the problem. The problem is when I move Corel WinDVD BD from my desktop to the flatscreen I see the player screen but no video and when I move the player back to my desktop the video reappears.

That's in extend mode. When I try to open WinDVD on the duplicated desktop on my flatscreen, then sometimes nothing happens at all! Am I doing something wrong? Or can the videocart not handle the flatscreen?

Answer:Satellite L670-1jQ - HDMI problem

As far as I know this with player will never work on extended display. The player will work on LCD only.
To be honest I don?t understand why you use extended desktop when you want to watch movies.
After connecting your flatscreen use FN+F5 key combination and switch to TV only. Then start BD player and movie. When the movie starts switch player to full screen mode and enjoy the movie on the TV.

Extended display will work perfectly when you work with some applications but there must be some graphic limitation and with BD player will not work.
