Satellite L500: keyboard issue after cleaning with an duster

Question: Satellite L500: keyboard issue after cleaning with an duster

Hi Guys,

New to this Forum, can any one assist us please

Our daughter decided to give keyboard a clean with a duster but this was whilst switched on and now certain letters when keyed perform other functions e.g the letter t brings up the same function as f7. The letter o,e and l also do different things meaning you cannot do anything without huge interuption.

Any ideas chaps . . .?

Preferred Solution: Satellite L500: keyboard issue after cleaning with an duster

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

>The letter o,e and l also do different things meaning you cannot do anything without huge interuption.
Does this mean that keyboard buttons T, O, E and L don?t work as it should even you typing slowly?

I have no idea why this happened after trying to clean the keyboard but possibly some keyboard buttons are damage.
The problem is that you cannot remove/replace single buttons and it seems you will need to replace the whole keyboard.

Good luck

Hi All,

I'm having a couple of issues with the keyboard on my Satellite L500-128 - essentially; the 8,9,i,o,k,l and comma and period keys don't work at all.

All other keys are working perfectly fine (I'm using an external keyboard if people are wondering!)

I'm technically minded but wondering if its worth taking the laptop apart and having a look or if someone has had this problem with this laptop before - or if anyone has any ideas with what could fix it.

I've tried doing a reset of the laptop (battery out and pressing power button) I've re-installed the OS but the keyboard still has issues in the BIOS too.

Answer:Keyboard Issue on Satellite L500-128

I cannot say for sure but I presume keyboard is defective and it should be replaced. Keyboards are not so expensive and you can buy it on ebay too.
Problem is how to exchange it.

Do you know someone who can do this for you?
If not you should contact nearest Toshiba service and ask for help. Generally speaking keyboard exchange is not a big deal but if you don?t have experience with this you can damage some small plastic parts or plastic holders.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500-11V and over the past few months the keyboard has been getting worse (some of the keys work only when they want too) and now it has stopped working completely. I purchased another keyboard hoping it would be an easy fix however this has not solved the problem.

I did some research and updated the bios to v2.1 however it still does not work. The wierd thing I have found though is that from using an external keyboard via USB when I press caps and number on the external keyboard both the lights on the laptop keyboard come on??

I am out of ideas and this is really bugging me now. Any ideas how to sort this?

Answer:Strange keyboard issue on my Satellite L500

If new keyboard didn?t sole this than there must be some serious hardware problem, keyboard controller maybe.
I think you need professional help with this so I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can check this with diagnostic tools and tell you for sure what is wrong there.

I just saw online that cleaning a PC with a feather duster is a big "NO-NO". Well.. It's actually pretty obvious.. Static electricity and stuff.
I am always cautios about these things...
But, to be honest, I cleaned my PC's with a feather duster since 2008.. ALL of the parts.
Never had any problems..
Nothing gets the PC cleaner than a feather duster

Could have I done damage without knowing it?
I mean, even though the PC runs fine, Could I damage it somehow?

Answer:Feather duster PC cleaning

If you caused any problems with your PC, it would be obvious. The most common problems would cause hard drive failure and you would know if that was beginning to happen. My advice is just enjoy your PC and clean it in the proper manner.

Hello everyone,

So a couple months ago I bought a couple cans of Memorex AirDuster cans and they have worked well for the most part. They've lasted a while but they are starting to run out and they are out of stock on Newegg and it says they've been deactivated. I would honestly prefer to get a small compressed air gun like maybe some of you have seen in movies or whatever. Very small hand held one that can easily fit into the tight spots within a desktop or laptop. If there anything like that than I'd be fine with going with another AirDuster can as long as it is safe on electronics because I know some aren't.

I guess a couple suggestions for both would be awesome.

Also what is the best way to actually go about cleaning a laptop. I'm sorry I know that is a pretty stupid question but basically all I do right now is make sure to wipe any dust that might accumulate with a lightly damp paper towel and use the Air Dusters to spray into the keyboard, ports, and other openings within the laptop. Is that the best way to go about doing it?

Oh and one final thing I've decided to learn how to fix broken PS3s with the dreaded YLOD or Yellow Light of Death. Once you actually get the thing taken apart it is very easy to do but of course they make it as difficult as possible to open in the first place. I'd like to think about doing the same for XBox360's but I'm not sure if the RROD (Red Ring of Death) is caused by the CPUs of the systems becoming loose or disconnected ... Read more

Answer:Suggestions for Cleaning (Air Duster Type Deal) Plus Other Random Questions

Well I think I can answer one of your questions. If you would be using an air compressor with a filter on the line it would be fine I believe. Otherwise there can be water in the line. I am not 100% sure of this so you may want confirmation from another member.

I have to buy a new keyboard for my Toshiba L500-1V1.
Could somebody please tell me which keyboards are suitable for Toshiba L500-1V1?

I have to get it as soon as possible and it seems to be impossible to find an original Toshiba keyboard replacement here in Finland.

That is why I am wondering if some other brands keyboard (f.ex asus, acer, hp, samsung, lenovo) would suit my computer because they are available in stores?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Satellite L500-1V1 What keyboard can I use?

The Satellite L500 supports and is equipped with an standard black A4+10key keyboard.
Usually keyboards released for other notebook series using the same layout (A4+10key type) should be compatible.

Furthermore you can always order a compatible keyboard from Toshiba authorized service partner in your country.

I have a Satellite L500 purchased in Portugal. My daughter has filled the keyboard with sugary tea. Fortunately the computer still works, but the keys are now very sticky and do not work properly.
I want to replace the keyboard. Will a UK spec board work on the computer? I changed the keyboard settings in Windows whilst using the Portuguese board.

Failing that, can I use a usb board with the laptop?

Answer:Need new keyboard for Satellite L500

Yes. Just be sure you have right keyboard designed for L500. You can get it cheap on eBay.

I have a Toshiba L500-13w (PSLJ3E-00X01G03) problems with the keyboard. The keyboard does not work. Already tested on windows, or even to access the bios.
I bought a new keyboard, and changed. It does not work. Any way to solve this problem?

Answer:New keyboard does not work on Satellite L500-13W

What happened with the notebook exactly?
Did you spill some kind of fluid on the keyboard maybe??

The keyboard is connected to the motherboard with an flat cable?
If the keyboard controller on the motherboard has not been damaged, then new keyboard should work

For some reason my space button in my keyboard has stopped working. PS/2 keyboard driver seems to be up to date. I have tried to re-install the driver without any luck. Could somebody please help me to resolve this problem?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Keyboard is not working in Satellite L500

> I have tried to re-install the driver without any luck.
Which driver? Where you can find driver for keyboard?

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there. Start notebook in safe mode and test it again. If the same happen again and again I presume keyboard must be exchanged.

As far as I know there is no way to ?force? one single keyboard key to work again.

You didn?t post many details regarding the keyboard issue but I think there could be a simple hardware malfunction which can be solved only by replacement of internal keyboard.

Bought a Satellite L500-1XJ 32bit with Windows 7 second hand from a friend.
It worked perfectly until the Toshiba files were accidentally deleted,
Can't find them anywhere, so I assume they have been permanently deleted.

I have tried recovery to no avail.
Also the keyboard is now mixed up ie to get the @ I have to use shift 2 instead of shift '.

What can I do?

Answer:Re: Satellite L500-1XJ - keyboard layout changed

What Toshiba files do you mean exactly?
Maybe Toshiba image files?

Regarding the keyboard layout issue:
I guess the keyboard language has been changed.

Usually you can add and change the keyboard language in:
Control Panel -> Clock, Language, and Region -> Region and Language ->Keyboards and Languages -> Change keyboards.

Details: [Change your keyboard layout|]

I bought a Satellite L500-19C with Windows 7 64 bits and I'm having troubles with the configuration of the keyboard for the correct use of portuguese language.

When I try to accent a letter, par example "a", I get aside "~~" instead of the accent above the letter. I've checked all configurations from Windows and Toshiba SW and everything seems to be fine tuned to portuguese (Portugal).

Please help me in the way to correct it.

Answer:Satellite L500-19C - How to configure keyboard properly?

Normally you can change the keyboard layout if navigate to control panel > Keyboard. There you should add the keyboard layout that you want and remove all other layouts that you don?t want.

After this the keyboard should work properly.

I have Vista L500 with a dead keyboard. This machine has not been dropped or had anything spilled on it. I have plugged in external USB keyboard which works. The laptop keyboard does not. I have flashed BIOS, updated drivers, held shift key for 10 sec (read on another forum), reset computer, checked Windows Vista updates and ran 3 Virus checks.
Everything is perfect, just no Keyboard?

What else should I check? Could it be a motherboard problem?

Thanks for any help given :)

Can you enter the BIOS (F2 key) with internal keyboard?
If not the internal keyboard seems to be defective and needs replacing?

I don?t think you can do more. I mean you tried everything what is possible and if an external keyboard works the OS installation should be ok.

The keyboard can be ordered and replaced from an authorized service provider. Do you know how to contact the guys?

Hi There!

A few weeks back I bought an L500/00U, brilliant machine.

Only problem so far, last night one of the retainer clips on the keyboard broke. It was the shift key that originally broke, but seeing as I use the shift key a lot, I swapped retiner clips with the + key on the numeric pad.

Anyway, my question is, how do I go about acquiring a new retainer clip, I'd really like to avoid returning the laptop to the store, only just got all my software installed after a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate RTM x64.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite L500 - Where can I get retainer clip for keyboard?

You can get all spare parts for Toshiba notebooks from an authorized service provider: > Support & Downloads > Find an authorized service provider

But if it?s something broken on the keyboard I think the whole keyboard must be replaced. I?m not sure but an ASP can help you but don?t worry, keyboards are not expensive. ;)

Go to Clock, Language and region in Control Panel. Then, in Keyboard and Languages menu, choose Change keyboards . Now, add English (United States). I think, there is a English (united Kingdom) in your settings, you can remove it.

About a month ago I spilt pepsi on my laptop and had it sent for repair. I got it back today and it had a new keyboard installed, among other things. But, the new keyboard is not functioning correctly.

A bunch of the keys type nearby letters instead. E.g typing "a" gives "aq1", "b" gives "bgt". It seems to type the letters vertically above. Some work fine.

Is the new keyboard faulty, or does it need calibrated or something? My laptop model is L500-19X.

Wondering whether someone can help. I recently purchased a Satellite L500 and the keyboard is giving problems. Every day two or three times it starts typing giberrish - i.e I type L it will type another letter and so on - and it only fixes the problem by doing a reboot.

Any idea what may cause this problem or how it can be fixed? Its a brand new machine so I am surprised by the problem?

Many Thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite L500 - Keyboard starts typing Giberrish

Hi Partha,

> Its a brand new machine so I am surprised by the problem?
That makes no difference. Such problems or other ones can happen always even the notebook is few days old.

Regarding your problem: Have you checked the keyboard input language? I don?t know which native language you want to use but I would recommend removing all other languages.
Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Language > Details

In worst case if it would be a hardware issue, you should get a new keyboard for free from an authorized service provider due warranty.

I'm studying in Germany now and I was thinking of buying the Satelite L500-164.
The problem is, in all shops you can only buy it with German keyboard which I totally hate.

Is it possible to change it to an English(or Greek) one?
How much will it cost? How long will it take?
I thought about buying it from Toshiba directly but they don't sell it, so I guess I'm stuck with buying it and immediately sending it to service for keyboard change?

Are there any shops which sell it with English keyboard or can change it at demand?

You could try to order from some online retailers. There are enough online shops which provides Toshiba notebooks?

Hi Altone,

That?s strange but in my opinion you should try a BIOS update. Newest BIOS version for your notebook you can download from Toshiba page: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

But let me give you a word of advice: BIOS update is always a little bit risky so make sure that you are logged in as Administrator. Furthermore extract all files from zip archive and close all running programs (also AntiVirus).

By the way: Are you using preinstalled Windows 7 from Toshiba or did you make your own Windows installation?

Dear support,
I have a problem with my battery, and searched some support online.
(it says "recommended to change the battery")

My problem is that i cannot ask for support online since TOSHIBA says that my pc type doesn't exist!
Sounds odd to me.

Toshiba Satellite L500-1W5 This is what's written below my pc.
Also the serial number doesn't exist...3A467845K

Could you please show me how to do?

Shall i follow the recommendation and use it without battery?

Answer:Re: Battery issue on my Satellite L500-1W5

Of course it exists. You can check it following
Just put serial number there and you will find info about it.

Can you please tell us which kind of problem do you have and which support have you contacted?
Have you contacted official Toshiba service provider in your country or some independent IT store?

Battery exchange is not big deal. When you remove the battery you can find part number on the sticker. Use this part number for order and problem is solved.

A month ago I throw liquid on my laptop ?? Nothing happened at first, but 4 days ago I noticed that the ESC, 1, Tab, Q, CAPS LOCK, A and Z keys don't respond, don't work. In addition, when I activate the CAPS LOCK with the WIndows keyboard on screen, the CAPS LOCK's LED switches on in the real keyboard.

I've asked the TOSHIBA Technical support and they say it is a physical problem instead of electronic. What do you think?
I've though to buy a new keyboard for my laptop, but the thing is I've got a spanish/catalan keyborard and currently I'm living in UK.

Any advice? Try to order a keyboard from Spain and send it to here could be an option? But where do I get a Spanish keyboard?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Answer:Left side of Satellite L500 13N keyboard doesn't respond

When liquid spills on a keyboard it gets into the circuit and membranes of the keyboard and causes it to corrode or short. Basically you need to buy a new keyboard since it's generally not possible to repair it.

A Toshiba repair center may be able to get you a Spanish keyboard, there is an ASP list on the Toshiba website.

Unfortunately sometimes it goes in the wrong direction.

Yes, I agree with you? at this point I would also try to reinstall an fresh Windows system or the image from Toshiba Recovery disk?
Usually the new OS installation would help to determine what?s wrong here? from my point of view, it looks like the OS has been muddled up and possibly an installation of OS would solve this.

3.The lid again, Underneath the screen where the lid is mounted to the "body" off the laptop if.. it is not glued to the screen like the rest of the edges its just putted next to it you can drag in it so you can see the wires going into the screen etc
is that normal?

Answer:Satellite Pro L500-12E - Issue with CD/DVD drive and display

Hey Pedersen37,

1) Maybe your older CD?s doesn?t work properly anymore. What happens if you try the same disks in another computer?

Regarding your display/lid problem? If you mean that you can see cables they going into the screen I can?t see it on my notebook. Normally all cables are invisible and under the plastic.
It?s strange to say something about this but maybe a plastic cover isn?t installed properly or a screw is missing?

If you think something isn?t normal you have to contact your authorized service provider. They can check the notebook.

I am experiencing issues with my notebook. My Display had been casuing problems for quite a while. I had black and white lines and patterns all over the screen and always had to change the angle of the screen. I opened the notebook once and magically the situation changed for the better without me actually doing much of anything. It stayed like that for about a year.

Well, recently it got worse again and one day me screen stayed black when I tried to start the notebook. I tried an external monitor using the windows button+P and Fn+F5, but neither worked. Then I tried closing the Notebook right after pushing the power button. It worked. I had a clear image on the external monitor. Then I opened my notebook and - magically to me - had an image on the internal screen, too. It worked until - after several hours - I had to restart the notebook. Now I am back with the same issue I had before and even the once successful tactic seems to no longer work.

Long story short: I thought, I might as well try a hard power cycle ( before opening the notebook again. And anyway, I don't know if opening it will do me any good.

My questions here are:

1) Does anybody have an idea what might be going on here?

2) Will a hard power cycle leave my data on the hard drive intact? This is not the same as a factory reset, is it? (Actually this is much more about the data then about the notebook. I'd rather sacrifice the notebook than the data.)

I've found a number of threads with similar issues, but none of the solutions worked for me, so here it goes:
I have an L500-1GE, which is about 6 years old, but hasn't been used much.
Since yesterday, it won't charge when plugged in, and when I pull the plug, it immediately shuts down (everything goes black suddenly), although it shows the battery to have about 25% power.

I have just installed the newest bios (2.10) from Toshiba's official site, but I don't know if this has anything to do with the aforementioned issue.

Should I just buy a new battery, or is there something to try before that?

I have a one month old Satellite L500-19Z operating on Windows 7 64bit.
Whilst using it to edit some photographs, it began to behave strangely. It was as if someone was rapidly depressing the mouse left button. I was unable to exit any program or use the Start Menu to reboot.

After disconnecting power, and battery, I started it in Safe Mode, but the problem was still there. If I hovered over any icon it brought the window up repeatedly. By disabling the touchpad using Fn+F9, I was able to use a graphic tablet to re-boot and it works as normal. I am reluctant to use the System Recovery or the Recovery Discs that I created when I bought it due to the number of third party programs that I would lose.

Has anyone experienced this problem please? What do I do to enable the touchpad to see if it is now working properly?
Many thanks

Answer:Strange issue with touchpad on Satellite L500-19Z

Can you enable/disable the touchpad by pressing FN+F9 as usual?

In your case I would also update the touchpad driver. You can download it here: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

If an external mouse works but the touchpad still makes problems I think you should use the Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings. After this you have the same settings as on the first day where you bought the notebook.

Brand new Laptop, Windows 7, 4GB RAM, etc

Just restored it to factory condition again but to no avail.

Whenever I use the up down etc arrows, it makes letters and numbers come up, not on every key stroke but on say every second. Also the number pad tends to spit out the wrong numbers as well intermittently also, in word, excel and some other programs. The correct keyboard is chosen. The down arrow tends to make <k> come up whilst the right arrow makes a <l> come up Left arrow is <h> and up arrow seems ok.

I am baffled, any ideas?

Answer:Satellite L500 - Keyboard issues using arrows creates letters and numbers

Hi whatnani,

If you have already restored the notebook back to factory settings and checked the correct keyboard layout the case is clear ? Your keyboard is malfunctioning and it should be replaced with a new one.

Satellite L500 is a pretty new model so it should be covered by warranty. Just contact an authorized service provider and ask for that: > Support & Downloads > Find an authorized service provider

Hi all I'm new here

I have been having a overheating problem with my laptop for a while now. As with most people this usually is worst when gaming or using even 25% CPU load for any more than say 10 mins! I'm sick of it and i just got married.

Now before i lived with my wife i could run a 4x 12v xbox dc fan set-up using a 12v adapter and some soldering. A old metal amp cover was cut and used to place laptop on with fans underneath and cooling was always around or under 60 degrees even under decent load.

BUT now i live in a quiet house i realise how loud this set-up is and can rarely use it to cool the beast.
The problem has been there for a while but i want it fixed so i can use my toshie as a real laptop not a gaming system on a "life support machine".

I have opened the case to notice it had built up a fair amount of dust, this at first got me excited i thought it was an easy fix......but after cleaning it thoroughly it made absolutely no difference!

Sooo i went off to MSY brought some Arctic Silver thermo grease!!!!! Applied it and NOTHING (yes it was applied correctly) over 6 times i applied new paste and reassembled!! Still no luck..

So im here with no ideas left apart from one thing i thought of......

1.Ok so i can feel the CPU heat
2.The heat travels only say 1/2 way up the copper heat conductor (Thermal Module i think its called)
3.No heat is exhausted through the heat sink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My conclusion is the copper p... Read more

Answer:Satellite L500 PSLS9A overheats - No dust issue

Just wanted to add that at 50 degrees on my wife's similar laptop the heat exhausted through the heat sink is very warm/hot and her laptop never jumps over 50 degrees ( i did a real temp load test at 100% load for over 5 mins and it diddnt get hotter than 50 degrees!!!!!!!) at any temp on my laptop bieng 50 degrees idle or 70 degrees the exhausting air is always cold =(

The laptop has passed the warranty period as well =(

I just have a few issues with my L500.

I've only had it for 2 months and I am pedantic about it to the point that it is either always in a bag when not being used or on a desk when it is and I even clean it with a paintbrush.

Despite all this it looks like I've had it for years. There are chunks missing out of the case and scratches all over the thing and the little rubber feet either side of the webcam are coming unstuck and will eventually fall out.

The mouse pad is also doing strange things regardless of the settings I have selected for it. It sometimes will not work on the left hand side of the screen and will flick off to the right and I have to restart the machine to get it to work properly again or I have to tap it several times to get it to do anything at all or it scrolls wildly and I can't get it to stop.

Basically it's under warranty, I'm unimpressed with that fact that it is obviously made of shoddy material and is being damaged when I am taking care of it and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about it.

I'm thinking abnormal wear and tear is possibly the case here.

Hmm? strange? what to say? my L505 is some month old but it looks like purchased at the first day.
No scratches, nothing! Of course I?m careful with this notebook and use a microfiber cloth in order to clean this. I don?t use it ?on the road? and I think this is the reason why it looks so nice? the plastic covers looks like other common covers used in other notebooks models? so don?t see any big differences.

> The mouse pad is also doing strange things regardless of the settings I have selected for it. Regarding the touchpad;
I think you should take a look into touchpad configuration settings: control panel -> mouse -> device settings -> settings (or properties)
There you can configure the settings provided by Synaptics driver.
Note; touchpad uses both drivers: Alps and Synaptics?
If you have some issues then an update might be recommended.

i have L500-12T and i upgrade to WIN 7 64 bit.
After the upgrade the FN key not working and i can't turn on the wireless card .

So i can't surf with the wireless.
I download all the driver that i found on the site of toshiba and it's still not working.

What i can do ?

Answer:Satellite L500-12t: FN buttons issue after Win7 64bit upgrade

I think you didn?t install the needed Toshiba software.
You have to install the VAP (value added package) and have to install the Flash Card Support Utility!

Be aware of this

When I start up my laptop instead of the usual Toshiba logo showing I get a black screen with white writing detailing components installed & the usual instructions for pressing F buttons at the bottom.

I have had to disable my password box because it was automatically filling in the box with a load of dots which was the wrong password.

When it eventually loads I have Yahoo as my homepage it fills the search box with a line of commas without me touching anything.

My comma key is not sticking & also if I click the windows logo at the bottom to show start menu it frequently turns white & fill the search box with commas.

Any ideas would be welcome.

I don?t know why but it seems that keys are pressed and appears automatically without touching the keyboard.

I spilled a drop of lemonade onto my cursor keys, and now the down and right arrow key-contacts are stuck. This causes some of the other keys to malfunction too. When I press 'em I hear a soft "beep", which indicates something like "busy, no more keystrokes possible". So I need to clean those contacts.

How can I safely remove the keyboard to clean it?

Answer:Cleaning keyboard Satellite A50

Hi Vincento,

Rather than remove your keyboard I would suggest that you remove the keytops from the stuck keys (carefully, they are easy to break), and then spray a very small amount of electrical contact cleaner on them. You can then manipulate the key mechanism to try to free the stuck contacts. Once they are free replace the key-tops.

Do not power on your notebook until the contact cleaner has fully evaporated.

Good afternoon everybody!
I summarize how the issue object of this thread has appeared.

The internal 320 GB broke out due to fatigue. Then, I decided to replace it with a used 500 GB HDD (that is the only minimum HDD capacity found on several marketplaces). The hardware substitution was done easily following a technical tutorial found on the web.

I managed (with many troubles) to reinstalling the original OS (Windows Vista HP) using recovery disks and setting the SATA mode from ?AHCI? to ?Compatibility?. Once the installation steps were completed, I rebooted the system setting another time the ?AHCI? mode from BIOS. Entering the system there was the installation of chipset and HDD driver controllers.

Using the DVDs purchased by Toshiba, I went on performing the Windows 7 HP update. Like Windows Vista, I had to change the SATA mode from ?AHCI? to ?Compatibility? to perform the installation.

Once the installation was completed, like in Vista, I rebooted the system setting changing another time the SATA controller mode to ?AHCI? from BIOS. Now, differently from Vista, I get a blue screen with error ?STOP 0x0000007B? that I could avoid only re-changing the SATA mode to ?Compatibility?.

Other strange thing: booting OS in ?compatibility? the installed software ?Intel Matrix Storage Manager? does not load plug-ins. If I try to upgrade to the newer version downloaded from Toshiba website the installation does not start due to the error ?The computer does not meet the minimum r... Read more

Hello, I bought Toshiba L500 in January but I haven't been able to update it with Tempro since May. Towards the end of setup, setup crashes and it says the following in Turkish:

"Hata 1722. Bu Windows Installer paketi ile ilgili bir sorun var. Kurulumun bir par?as? olarak ?al??an program beklendi?i gibi sonlanmad?. Destek sorumlunuza veya paket sat?c?s?na ba?vurun."

If I translate it briefly,

"Error 1722. There is a problem with his Windows Installer package. The program working as a part of the setup didn't finish as expected. Apply your support service or package seller."

I download the Tempro setup file, but whenever I start setup, it always says so. How can I update my laptop?
Thank you for your interest and answers.

Answer:Re: Satellite L500 - Temro issue - Error 1722 Windows Installer package

If the 1722 error appears then this means that a program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected
Please check the new Tempro version here:

I installed Tempro and is functioned so I assume it?s a problem with your Windows OS.

I have an Satellite P20 that is acting strange. I've been cleaned the keyboard (removed it, took it apart and cleaned all the keys) but when i boot it up now (I have connected the keyboard) It goes *beep beep* *beep beep beep beep* on me (sounds like one of those things at the hospital). If I wait for some time it eventually boots up XP but then some keys (5%) are not responding (S and arrow down to name some).

I've tried to boot up with the keyboard disconnected and that works like a charm.

So is it the keyboard thats faulty? ( I rather not buy a new one just to get the same problem) or is it keyboard connector or me doing it wrong (I have disconnect and connected the keyboard many times)

I'm very thankful for any help or tips that I can get.

Best Regards

Answer:Satellite P20 - beeps at start up after keyboard cleaning

This is strange but maybe the keyboard is faulty as you said.
Or you don?t have the keyboard connected to mainboad correctly. Check this again.

Maybe one key is always pushed and so get the beeps. Check this.

Good morning everybody!
I have recently performed a factory default installation on the notebook object of this thread followed by Windows 7 update.
I had some problem in reinstalling all the drivers, but I solved it.

Because I always am a lucky guy , the installation of the AHCI driver has brought another undesired issue.

I have a problem in searching and installing Windows updates through, obviously, Windows Update (WU).
When I try to perform an update research, I get this error:? Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running...?.

The first thing I did was to check if WU service was running looking into the service ?tab? of control panel.
Nothing was changed accidentally and in fact the WU service was turned on as always.

The second step, suggested by some tutorials on the web, concerned into stopping the Windows Update service, deleting the ?SoftwareDistribution? folder and turning on another time the Windows Update service. This procedure did not solve the issue.

After many others attempts, I found the solution reading a thread in an Italian forum.

Briefly, the post explains that the issue (more evident on just formatted machines) is caused by an incompatibility of Intel Matrix Storage Manager with some processes of Windows Update. This causes that error appearing without any apparent reason.

The solution is uninstalling the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software and installing a newer one, for example this suggested by... Read more

Hi there,

I have the Satellite L50-A model and whilst typing today, whenever I tap one of the letters on the /eyboard (from previous word it should be easy to figure out which letter it is!) it is substituted with / (forward slash).

My computer is only a couple of months old and is very well cared for (no food or liquids allowed near it!). I have heard of many people having an issue with letters being substituted by numbers, which I believe is a num loc/ issue. I have tried this, even restored computer to factory settings but still no luc/!

Hopefully someone may be able to help me out?
Than/s :)

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite L50-A

> have tried this, even restored computer to factory settings but still no luc/!
I?m sure this is a keyboard hardware problem and I guess everything would work properly using external USB keyboard. If you did not test this in the past, I would recommend you doing this just to confirm that the usage of external keyboard wouldn?t be a problem.

I assume there is no other solution for you as to replace the internal keyboard with a new one.
I assume the warranty is still valid because the L50-A is new on the market and therefore you should contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in order to get it fixed free of charge.

A few days ago my "backspace" key starting displaying as "9" and does not respond to the "backspace" command. How do i correct this?

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite L70-A

You could try to connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook in order to check if this keyboard button behavior will appear using external keyboard.
If the USB keyboard would work properly, then the problem is caused definitely by internal keyboard malfunction. In such case you would need to replace the keyboard.

Is you warranty valid? In case it is, the replacement could be replaced free of charge.

Some time ago I spilled beer on my Satellite C50D-A-133 and as a result of this stupidity of mine as you can guess the keyboard stopped working properly. Even though I left it to dry and cleaned it, as soon as I connect it to the laptop it starts acting as if a key is constantly held down. On the back side there is sticker with exact part number. You can use this part number and try to order new one. What you can also do is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

Addresses and phone numbers you can find on

In my opinion this question is for Toshiba service and not for user-to-user forum.

Anyway I think that both keyboards are not the same and you should order 100% identical keyboard designed for your notebook model.

Question is: why do you look for keyboards for old notebook models if you can order new one for L500.
On eBay you can get it quite affordable.

I have an issue with the keyboard on my m30. It always thinks that the shift keys are pressed. The only way around it was for me to disable the two keys in the registry - using an external keyboard.

External keyboards work perfectly.

Thinking that this was a problem with my keyboard i replaced the m30 keyboard twice but still have the same problem, even after a complete wipe of my OS.

Do you think this could be a motherboard problem? It occurred after one year.

Answer:Strange keyboard issue on my Satellite M30

Hi trev

In my opinion just detailed testing can clarify the situation. In my opinion there is some hardware problem. I believe that keyboard controller is defective. Maybe I am wrong, but as far as I know the external and internal keyboard don?t use the same controller.

Try to contact service partner and ask them what the problem can be. They must know what is wrong there.

Hi all

I decided to change the keyboard for a brand new one but to no avail....

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro L300 - Keyboard issue

> The original keyboard started to act funny after i think, it was dropped.
So was the notebook dropped or not?
I think it is very important to know if the notebook was dropped or not because other hardware parts could be affected.
I mean it could be possible that motherboard or keyboard controller is affected due to the notebook drop.

I don?t think that someone here could be able to help you? if the notebook was dropped, then you should ask an technician for a hardware check? maybe there is a part which is affected and needs to be replaced but hardware needs to be checked to know this?

Hi there,

My issue is that I've spilt some fruit juice on my Satellite A30. Since then MN,. buttons on the keyboard do not respond. I believe it has to do with the fact that the juice having evaporated has left some sort of insulation below those buttons. I wonder if anyone can advise me on the following:

1.How do I remove the keyboard out of Satellite A30? The Manual doesn't give a hint on that.

2.Is it possible to remove defective buttons, clean up the surface below them, and put them back without any problem? I've heard that once removed laptop keyboard buttons can't be placed back correctly.

3.What solution do I have to use to clean up the remains of juice? My only idea is to use some sort of soap solution.

4.Would it be allright just to put the entire keyboard without taking away defective buttons into some solution and keep it there for a while until all the juice remains are washed away? Then let the keyboard thoroughly dry up and put it back? Or, may be there is a way to disassemble the keyboard in order to take out the circuit so that it can be cleaned carefree?

I hope you people help me get through this issue cause I don't want to spend a fortune on a new keyboard as the people in the service centre possibly won't bother to clean my keybard and will just get away with ordering a new one.

Ok, thanks for consideration and your ideas.

Answer:Satellite A30: Keyboard issue for inventive ones

If the only buttons not working are the 'n' and 'm' ones then you may be able to clean them adequately without having to resort to dismantling your A30.

Firstly you will need to remove the keytops from the affected buttons. Do this by carefully prising them up from the bottom edge of each button (use the space bar as a rest for a small flat blade so that you can lever the buttons upwards. Once the keytops are removed (don't lose them) you will be able to see the spring cantilever mechanism which makes the electrical contact when you press it. Carefully clean the area using a small cotton bud (or even a small brush) and plenty of isoproyl alcohol (or an electrical contact cleaning solution). Hopefully this will restore the normal function of the keys.

To replace the key tops locate the top edge first and lower the keytop into position and apply gradual pressure the the bottom of the key top until your hear/feel a 'click'.

If all else fails then you will need to replace the keyboard but luckily these are not too expensive (about ?65 as I recall).

Best of Luck

Hey Folks,

I'm a tech trying to help a friend who dumped a coke on his keyboard. Fell asleep while hacking. Anyway, I ordered a c55 keyboard before seeing the device. I had the Model number. This was an error. The original keyboard appears to be, almost an integral part of the top cover. its held in place by, , a gazillion small melted plastic "rivets". The C55 keyboards that I see on the web or that arrived at my hovel were regular ones; drop in screwed in.

Do we have to replace the top cover w/ the KB?Where can we find one?If we can extricate the KB from the underside of the top cover, where can we get on of those?

The whole thing is different, the battery has to be screwed in, the hard drive is wedged in w/ rubber wedges, there's an extra connector on the mobo (this always freaks me out on reassembly). There is no service manual available. Information is scant: trayless???

I'm a CompTIA A+ Certified Tech with a Information Systems degree and certified in Mechatronics, a formally trained and experienced Electromechanical Designer/PCB designer who's been cussing computers for almost half a century.
This is what I do. Can anyone shed some light?

The problem is that for reasons unknown to me I keep encountering a problem where the A, N and Enter keys do not work when pressed. Occasionally pressing the key repeatedly (they aren't jammed) just makes the letter come out, but I can't keep pressing the key five or six times to get one letter. Just to mention, I have not spilled anything on the keyboard.

I have done full anti-virus and spyware scans but have found no issues.
I have this evening done all of the windows updates available to me, however it doesn't seem to have done the trick.

After restarting the device following the updates all worked well for about 15 minutes, until the same three keys stopped working again. On this occasion it lasted only for a couple of minutes, and now I am writing this with the same keyboard.

Note: I am not using the original keyboard. I changed the board due to minor material damage but had it done privately.
However this was done the better part of a year ago and has worked perfectly since being installed, until this new issue occurred in the last few weeks.

If anyone has any further recommendations or suggestions as to what may be the cause or any solutions then please share them.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard issue

I think you would understand that nobody is able to say why your keyboard malfunctions.
Only if the notebook hardware has been checked/scanned, it would be possible to say what?s wrong here?
But generally speaking there is a good workaround to diagnose the problem.

You could connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook and could check if the same problems with the mentioned buttons will occur.

In case the external USB keyboard would work properly, I think that your internal keyboard is the troublemaker? in such case you would need to replace the keyboard once again.

I wonder if a Toshiba representative could help me. I recently (3 days ago!) purchased a Toshiba notebook (Satellite L555-11u), and have noticed a problem
with the keyboard. I cannot use the 'L' key at all, and hope that my hardware warranty will allow for repair of this problem.
I have verified that all drivers are installed and up to date, and that there has been no physical damage caused to the keyboard or notebook.
How can I arrange to have this problem resolved in Ireland?

Answer:Satellite L555-11u keyboard issue

Of course, the warranty will cover keyboard replacement, if needed.
In my opinion you should contact your local dealer as soon as possible. Usually you have two weeks (depends on country of purchase) time to send back your product. So try to contact your local dealer and try to get replacement. I am pretty sure you can get new notebook.

If this will not work please contact Toshiba authorized service and explain the situation.
To find address and phone number please visit Toshiba support page under > Support & Downloads > Find an ASP.

Good luck.

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite L670-10P

Hello Ismar

To be honest I didn?t understand your posting very well but if you have new and registered notebook with valid warranty you must not pay anything if the notebook or any hardware part is defective.

While warranty time all that must be done, I mean all costs, will be covered by warranty.

In case the external keyboard would work properly, the issue might be related to internal keyboard malfunction.

I wonder if there's an update facilities or error check for my laptop, maybe I have missing some file for the Toshiba utilities?

Do you use your new Satellite notebook with original preinstalled operating system that you got with it?

Have you noticed these problems from the first day or later?
What you can try is to reinstall Toshiba value added package. This package contains several tools and one of them is flash cards utility.

Last version you can find on Toshiba download page under

I have Satellite L40-17u laptop and I have had this from new for about 2 months. My keyboard now seems to do its own thing. I go to the settings to correct this. It is ok for a while then goes haywire again, thus letting some of the letters on the key board either typing numbers, some don't type at all, and not typing the keys I am pressing.

I have done a reformate and it still goes the same way.
Any ideas please?

Hi, I'm the owner of a Satellite Pro L870-173 Notebook.
During writing an email the functions of the keyboard changed.
Some keys have another meaning, here are some examples

Space lab = ?
4 =? v4v4
c =The optio? for a secodon display

What can I do?
Is the cause a defect keyboard?
Do somebody have an idea?

The system is a Win8? 6v4-bit
The settings of the keyboard is still the same: German language

Thanks a lot!

Yes, I?ve got an idea.

I?m afraid, yes.

You can confirm my idea connecting external USB keyboard to the notebook.
In case your external keyboard would work properly, the issue is related definitely to the internal keyboard.

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite L505 and for some reason one key will not work it?s the last letter of the alphabet.
I can?t type it for obvious reasons. I am staying in Saudi Arabia and use a keyboard with English and Arabic letters. I am English though so don?t require the Arabic alphabet.

Any ideas or should I return the laptop?

Hoping for a response. Thanks Vic

Answer:Keyboard Issue on Satellite L505

I don?t think that you have to return the whole laptop. Maybe it?s just a wrong setting in Windows so what keyboard input language did you set in Windows?
Are you running factory settings or another OS?

If one key or more keys don?t work you have to exchange the keyboard. There are no single keys so you have to replace the whole keyboard but it shouldn?t be so expensive. Just ask an authorized service provider to get a new one and they can exchange it too. :)

Any help appreciated.

I have recently purchased Toshiba notebook Satellite L670/055. Never had Toshiba always Compaq/HP. Trying to type with the keyboard is so frustrating. You type away, and when you look up you have missed half the letter and space. It appears to 'stick'. I have contacted Tosh and read threads and tried to download BIOS update. However I get this message:

The program will be closed:
There is an error, please check items below.
Battery capacity more than 10%. AC is attached

UEFI WinFlash

I suspect this has nothing to do with the issues but I am only using a trial of Windows 7 - any suggestions as the laptop is useless to me!!!

many thanks for any help

Hi, just hoping for a bit of insight in to what the problem may be with my Satellite A200.

It started with one key not working, then another stopped working. Then I'd press a key but it would come up with a different letter on the screen. Then it got really bad, I couldn't use the keyboard at all as random letters would appear as I typed, eventually escalating to the point where letters would continuously appear on the screen when the keyboard wasn't being touched.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling driver, didn't help. Tried a usb keyboard which was great until tonight. Neither the laptop keyboard nor usb keyboard are working when typed on, yet sometimes random letters appear on the screen.

I was willing to replace the keyboard if it was just a keyboard issue, but now I'm wondering whether it could be the motherboard. Has anyone else experienced the same or similar problem?

Nothing has been spilt on the keyboard.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite A200

This is very confusing when the USB keyboard doesn?t work too. At first I thought it must be defective keyboard but I am afraid there is some serious hardware problem and I don't think you can fix it alone.

I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and ask for help.

I'm Belgian and my English isn't perfect, so before all I want to apologise for this.

I have a Satellite M211 from China (keyboard QWERTY) and I don't know what happened but yesterday when I switched it on to use it I discovered that the keyboard has completely changed (when I tape "9" there is "39" coming, when I tape 8 there "87" coming, ...), all the keys have changed and it impossible for me to use the keyboard anymore.

I noticed that there was a light under the "F10", and this was new as when the keyboard was normal this light won?t on.
So I want to know how I can solve this problem of keyboard and switch off this light (I had already try by "Fn" "F10", it doesn't work).

Answer:Strange keyboard issue on Satellite M211

I do not know how it work on Chinese notebook models but try to use FN+F10 or maybe FN+F11. It is important to disable this LED and integrated keypad.

When activated, the keys with grey marking on their bottom edge become either numeric keypad keys (FN+F11) or cursor control keys (FN+F10).

Hello everybody,

I have a problem on a Toshiba Satellite C670-11Q with windows Seven

o gives ?

And If i use SHIFT :
e gives 3
t gives 5
u gives 7
i gives 8
o gives 9

I uncheck already the Filter keys and the problem persist. It's strange beacause it's the same with Ubuntu (also installed on this laptop).

All work as well with an usb keyboard.

The problem comes since the cat sleep on the keyboard :)

Do you have an idea ?

Sorry for my bad english

Answer:Satellite C670-11Q - "e give " keyboard issue

> All work as well with an USB keyboard.

For me it sounds like the keyboard would be faulty.
The point is that if the USB keyboard is OK then the issue cannot be related to the software settings.
So it has to be hardware fault.

Get in contact with an Toshiba ASP in your country and ask for a keyboard check and replacement

Hi there,

I need urgent assistance regarding the keyboard of my C850-F0202.
Without warning the keyboard went moot.

The only bit that seem to be unaffected are the shorthand keys for brightness(f2-f3), wireless toggle(f12) as well as those for volume(f9-f10). Furthermore, the "NUM LOCK" indicator light does comes on upon restart.

I have effected several suggestions and recommendations-system restore, uninstalling keyboard driver and restarting system, etc-all to no avail.
In one of the occasions in which I tried system restore I did get an error message: critical process died.
All attempts at "system restore" have ended up unsuccessful.

I'm dumbfounded, bar this keyboard issue, everything seems to work just fine; boot-up is smooth, no hustle.
I'm at my wits-end, I need more positive assistance.

Please help, thanks!

NB: Operating system: windows 8.1 pro.

Answer:Keyboard issue on Satellite C850-F0202.

From my personal opinion you should check whether this issue could be related to internal keyboard problem or keyboard controller issue.
Connect the external USB keyboard and check if it will work properly.

In case the connected USB keyboard would work correctly, the problem is must be related to the internal keyboard malfunction. To fix the issue, you need to replace the internal keyboard.

Bought my Satellite L100 in July last year. Problem is that I need much more pressure to press the "a" key than all the others. How can I fix this?

Can I lift the keyboard to check why it's almost jammed? I had no problems when I bought this notebook.

Answer:A keyboard button issue on Satellite L100

If you will remove the whole keyboard you will lose the warranty and I would not risk the warranty because of the single keyboard key.

But you can remove the single key cap from the keyboard and check if there is dirt or something else with a bad influence to the key mechanism.

For a keyboard replacement you have to contact the service partner in your country???

After I replaced my 40GB hard drive with a 100GB hard drive (the old drive froze), I have been having a lot of problems with my keyboard.
When I'm typing, I find that the letters 'i' with tab backward so some strange point, the letter 'u' may tab forward, other letters will do other strange things.

I tried cleaning under the keys, but that didn't work. It gets very frustrating. (While typing this, the cursor jumped to a word in the first sentence, jumped 3 characters to the left, as well as jumping to the beginning of the line, really strange).

Any ideas will be greatfully appreciated.

Answer:Satellite 5105-S501 keyboard issue

Did you install the Toshiba recovery CD?
Did this issue appear before the HDD replacing?
Maybe the new HDD with the big size has a bad influence on the keyboard.
I have read some postings in the forum and it seems that sometimes a new BIOS upgrade could solve such issues.
Please be sure that you use the right BIOS and right BIOS upgrade procedure.

The other possibility is that you have done something wrong during the HDD replacement.

Hi all,

This is my first post to forum; hope I'm keeping with protocol and I appreciate any help offered in advance!

My Satellite, as of a few hours ago, has experienced a keyboard key mismatch that doesn't affect the entire board, only a few essential keys.

The left 'Shift' no longer functions in capitalizing text or in general (the right is confirmed as functional); typing 'n' brings up the letters 'n6'; and the space bar seems to shift text one space to the right than add a space.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled my keyboard drivers, restored my laptop to an earlier date (running Vista SP2); dismantled the keyboard ribbon before re-inserting, and run multiple anti-virus programs (Kapersky, Spybot, Ad-aware).

The problem still persists.
Long story short, is there something I can do/test to confirm what the problem is (and potentially solve it) or is it something as simple as needing a new keyboard?

Again, any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated!

P.S. This post took an extreme amount of editing!

Answer:Satellite A305-S6916 Keyboard Key issue

From my point of view it could be an keyboard hardware issue.
Before replacing the internal keyboard, I would recommend connecting an external USB keyboard in order to check if the same issue still happens.
If the same keyboard problem would be available using external keyboard, then an keyboard controller issue might be possible. Otherwise it seems to be internal keyboard hardware problem?

So what to say; either you will ask some technicians for a replacement or you will try to do this yourself? anyway, you need an compatible keyboard and this can be ordered from a local Toshiba service technicians?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L450-18D, that was bought in England in May, and sent over to me in Portugal, so I chose Portuguese as the default language for my keyboard. However, for the past two weeks, I've been having this problem: ever since I installed Microsoft Office 2007 and the Office SP2 update, I've been having this curious situation with the accents - instead of seeing only 1 accent everytime I click a key, I see 2 accents (with only one click).

Something like this:
?? (1 click); ~~ (1 click); ???? (2 clicks) and so on. This is *huge*, _because we use a lot of accents in portuguese_ - for instance, I should be able to write +portugu?s+ (written in notepad) and not +portugu^^es+!!!

Now this does not happen when I use Notepad, but happens at every other program (Office, Works, OpenOffice...) and also in my internet browser (Mozilla Firefox). Is there any way that I can manually delete or manipulate the accent associated with a specific key? I've tried switching the default language to Brazilian Portuguese and uninstalling Office 2007, yet the problem remains... Could it be associated with any update regarding Office?

Thanks for your time!!

Answer:Satellite L450-18D - Keyboard language issue

To be honest that?s really strange behavior...

Interesting would be if you remove Microsoft Office if the problem still exist or not. If yes it seems to be related to Microsoft Office and therefore you must contact Microsoft for detailed answer.

Otherwise you can only check the keyboard input language. Make sure only one language is set.

I have been using a foldable keyboard and a remote keyboard and have been having problems:

1.Characters not showing when typed.
2.Cursor jumping from typing position to another place usually outside the box that I am typing in.
3.Characters repeating while typing.
4.Actions ie Backspace not operating.

These problems do not seem to happen in Gmail and are not happening as I type this.
The problems have occurred so far in Google Calendar,a text doco and login to a site.
The problem did occur with the on board keyboard once so I am wondering if it is a malfunction or a virus.

Any ideas ?.

In this forum you could find a lot threads about similar theme and the solution is easy:
You have to update the BIOS.
New BIOS version would solve the issue? this was also confirmed in the forum.
