Creating Recovery disks without the possibility to boot -Satellite L300

Question: Creating Recovery disks without the possibility to boot -Satellite L300

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-139 (Vista, 160GG, 2GB memory).

Hard disk has been damaged (when booting Vista, systems does not start at all, and every time only a blank screen with the mouse arrow is shown --> tried all choices + PE boot etc. but there is no access to the Recovery Console) and there is no possibility to run CHKDSK to fix this problem.

No recovery disks were created when the computer was new.

I removed the laptop hard disk and plugged it in to my desktop computer, but 2 partitions out of 3 were damaged and I managed to recover some data including:

c:\program files\TOSHIBA

Recovery of the data was done by using and external USB hard disk.

I copied all the data to the USB disk and started the TRORDCLauncher program (run as Administrator). All it does it removes my DVD-drive from vista and then fails with error (rough translation):
"Other process is using the drive or there is no drives available. Check the drive status. [OK]"

It seems that Recovery Images have been created with Windows PE Tools 2.0 (Imagex), but as the data is spreaded around the folders I have not been able to create the recovery disks manually.

Any Ideas and knowledge how to create the recovery disks with this data what I have or do I have to order the DVD's and wait for couple of weeks before getting the system up again?

If someone knows a nice solution for executing Microsoft CHKDSK to my computer I would be pleased! Tried: PE boots (both xp and Vista versions) + all recovery methods which were available in my computer... a Simple boot with sata support and run CHKDSK ISO image would be nice!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry but there is no chance you can create recovery DVD. Recovery DVD can be created if you use ?Toshiba Recovery creator? tool only and unfortunately there is no way to get it.

HDD recovery procedure using F8 can work only if the HDD configuration is not changed (new OS installed), the HDD recovery folder must be placed on second partition.
So with short words, you can do this just if the notebook has ?factory settings?. Now you cannot do anything but order new original recovery DVD for this notebook model.

If you want to do this you can order it under

I was just wondering about this.
Could i make ISO images of my recovery disks, i know i could just make some more copies, but i am learning how to create ISO images.
But i was a bit worried what would happen when i put a disk in the drive.....

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-1BV - creating ISO images of your recovery disks

This with recovery image is a little bit complicated and something like this is not possible.
All you can do is to create recovery DVD using Toshiba recovery disc creator or start recovery from HDD directly using Toshiba recovery option (F8).

You can do with this what you want but how you want to start installation later?
Sorry but I think it will not work.

Dear All

I wish to find out how many recovery disks my L300-1AQ (Model No PSLB8E) laptop requires.

I have a disk that I made when I bought the computer but I cannot start using it untill I make sure that only one disk is required (if more than one disk is required and I start the recovery process I believe I will render the computer unusable). I know that recent Toshibas come with multiple DVDs so it's definitely worth my checking before I do anything.

Oh and the recovery partition is gone due to an "aggressive" installation of linux, so that's not an option for us (it's new user is a windows user).

I cannot find this information on the internet or in the manual so I would be grateful if anyone out there has this information.

Best wishes to all

Answer:Satellite L300-1AQ - How many recovery disks required?

Hi DiodePrridge51b,

If Toshiba recovery disk creator required 1 disk only, you need only 1 recovery disk to restore factory settings.

It?s always depending on the notebook model and OS how much disks you need but if only 1 disk was required it?s enough and you start recovery installation. :)

I have a Satellite L300 and have made a few sets of recovery disks as from what I read some makes work and some dont and so far none have.

Insert disk 1, press power on button and hold F12 down until the option for boot comes up.
Select CD/DVD then dos type box appears with X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe - startnet.cmd
and in the box Waiting for ODD to become available...

You can add as many dots after that as nothing proceeds further - hence three sets of recovery disks on three different brands of DVD any advice would be pleaseing!

Answer:Re: Satellite L300 - Recovery disks made but wont run

According to your description, the system recovery procedure does not start up and the ODD cannot read the disk.

In your case I would recommend recover the notebook using the Toshiba HDD recovery.
You can start the procedure from HDD; press F8, choose repair my computer, Toshiba HDD recovery.
Now the system restore should proceeds?

After the notebook has been set to the factory settings, check if there is a firmware update for this ODD (CD/DVD drive). If yes -> update the firmware.
I know you have tried three different DVD brands but you should still try to create a recovery disk using another DVD disk? I?m using TDK DVD ?R and had good experience using it. A friend of mine uses Verbatim DVD?R and never had any problems?

Well, for the first time in 8 years I had to do a system recovery using the disks i created when i first bought my l300-13s using the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.
I had inadvertantly deleted the HDD Recovery partition when i set out to do a clone using a bigger HDD.

What I want to find out is instead of making recovery disks to DVD can i make a recovery USB flash drive?

Answer:Satellite L300-13S - Recovery USB instead of Recovery DVD Disks?

When you open Toshiba recovery media creator you can see options which media can be created. I?m not 100% sure but I think on old L300 there was option for recovery DVDs only so I think you cannot create recovery USB.

I have a problem creating recovery disks for the Satellite L500-126.

I am using the Toshiba recovery disk creator.

The 1st disk is ok.
When I try to make the 2nd disk, the systems stops exactly at 50% of the 2nd disk. and no more reaction from the disk creator.

I tried 2x, and each time i had to abort and throw away the dvd's.

any suggestions?

Answer:Problem creating recovery disks for the Satellite L500-126

You should try another DVD from different manufacturers?
It?s nothing unusual that some DVDs are not fully compatible and that the CD/DVD drives cannot write the data properly?
I had such issue in the past and could solve this testing and using different DVDs.

I bought Satellite A500 yesterday and now I am trying to create the recovery disks before anything else.
However, towards the end of the 1st DVD, I get an error message saying "Faile dto open the following file. e:\boot\bcd (Error code 0201123-F1-00000000)" and then when I click 'OK', the DVD is ejected giving a message 'failed to create recovery media 1'. Upon physical examining I have noted the DVD is written to almost full.

Any advise on this? Also, in the interface, it does show a USB option and says to insert a USB media with more than 7GB free. Can I use this to create the recovery disk? If so, when I reinstall windows 7, can this be used as a bootable disk?

Would greately appreciate any help on this issue. If it is malfunctioning, I want to return it ASAP.

Answer:Satellite A500 - problems with creating the recovery disks

As far as I know you cannot use external device for recovering so it is very important to create recovery DVDs.

Try to create recovery disc using DVD-R media only. Use high quality medias like TDK or Verbatim.
Last month I created recovery discs on Satellite A500-157 and everything went well.

The disks are not scratched and after going through 5-6 disks am wondering if something is wrong with the optical drive & not the disks.

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

Can anyone help please?

I own a Satellite L350-20F running Vista
After suffering a blow to the laptop it stopped working. (no surprise)
Have used recovery disks to try to restore unit, but nothing happens it just reboots to the running ants with microsoft corporation written underneath, then check disk starts reporting no bad sectors, after this fins it reboots to running ants again.

Am getting blue screen error message every now and again, then goes to windows recover screen to either launch startup reapir (done this lots times still no progress) or start windows normally.
Tried to repair but just keep going through the stages of putting disks in and going through disk repair.

Is it easy to change HDD inside (i know how to on PC but no clue in laptop)(out of warranty))
I also own a satellite L300-25H is it poss to network them together and do a full format of broken one to see if that helps?
The only thing is will i be able to reformat new HDD with recovery disks to put back on Vista or will i need to pay out for a new OS?

Many Thanks

Answer:Satellite L350-20F - Recovery Disks work to a certain point, still no boot

Yes it is easy to replace the HDD, just unscrew the two screws in the HDD Panel on the Base.

If there is a HDD chassis/bracket on the drive, you will need to transfer the bracket to the new HDD.

If you have no Recovery Discs, you can order the discs from the Toshiba website for a small fee.

Nearly new Win 8 laptop in the office.  From time to time it has suggested I create recovery disks.  I finally managed to buy some DVD-R disks (that involved driving more than 100 miles).  What to do instead of waiting for the next prompt?
I tried Control Panel -> Recovery -> Create Recovery Drive
It then asks Copy Recovery Partition?  If yes, it offers only the option of creating a recovery drive (using a flash drive of at least 16 GB capacity).  If no, you have the option of creating disks instead ... but it created only a single disk, using only about 1/3 the capacity of the disk (to judge by the visible writing trace).  I had been given to understand that "recovery disks" would require 3 to 5 disks.  So is this not the same thing as the recovery disk set that would be created if I accepted the prompt?  and if so, how to generate that prompt without waiting (an unknown number of days) before it appears again?

Answer:Creating recovery drive/disks

Oops, think I may have found the answers to this in the links posted in the thread "Do you need a clean install of windows 8 to make recovery disc?"

My two vista recovery disks.
Can i make "ISO" images out of these using "imgburn" i really just thought it would be a good idea to have the two recovery disks that i have as "ISO" images, so i can have these on my other computer as a backup copies...

I have been learning about the "imgburn" program, and thought it would be a good idea to get some practice on creating some ISO images.

So if this is fine and ok to do, what would normally happen when i inserted the first disk, would i just cancel out anything that pops up...

Ok, I have no problem with creating these, I did this so that my hp recovery partition will be on disks, instead of on my computer, so i can use that partition that it is on for storage.

So before i created these disks, I had around 34gigs of hard drive space on my c:/ drive. The way creating these disks worked for me, was I clicked on recovery disk creation in recovery manager, and that apparently saved the recovery files, to my c:/ drive. Because after I did this, my hard drive space went down to 22gigs, and my recovery partition says that it is around 11gigs, so these numbers do make sense.

I have the disks created, and I dont know why it saved the files to my computer before burning the discs, but it did. Either way, my disks are done, and now I want to find where these recovery files saved to my c:/ drive so that I can delete them.

Does anyone know where I could find these and what the folder name might be?

I want to delete them off of the hard drive, as well as delete them off of the recovery partition, so that I can use that space for other stuff.

Creation du disque 1 sur 3 r?ussie
Reinserez le disque que vous venez de creer et fermez le plateau du lecteur.

which means:

disk 1 of 3 successfullly created
Insert the disk you just created and close the drive tray.

I did that, but nothing happens, the program will do nothing and does not proceed to ne next step; the creation of disc 2.

OneKey is an Idea tool typically.  It's done with ThinkVantage tools on Windows 7 Think machines.
IIRC it varied a little over the years.  Sometimes it was an option in Rescue and Recovery, other times there was a direct start menu link, and sometimes it was in tools as above.

Greetings -

Recently purchased a Lenovo X220i laptop, which came with Win7
Home Premium 64 installed, but no separate media.

The laptop has Lenovo's Factory Recovery Disks utility, which I ran.
It created one CD-ROM of just under 300MB, containing:
BOOTMGR file (375KB)
WINRE.WIM file (288.5MB)
a 17MB BOOT folder.

Given that the C:\Windows directory alone has 14GB in it, the CD contents
strike me as being enough to perhaps boot the laptop, but not enough to
recreate Windows on another disk if & when the factory hard drive goes south
(or I decide to replace it with an SSD).

Is there perhaps a Windows7 utility backup that I should be using to create
a fully restorable Windows install package (excluding, of course, additional
programs that I've installed from original media) and, if so, what is it?

Insight welcome.

Thanks kindly,

- Richard

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows7 and no where in the setup process was i instructed to create system recovery disks. I have now loaded all of my programs, printer, scanner etc and thought perhaps I better take care of creating the system recovery disks before I forgot. When I started the process, the first thing I saw was a statement"

It is important to create the system recovery disks before using your computer

Just how important is that step? I have had the computer for one week so of course have used it to register software, create some documents etc.

What will happen if I go ahead and create the disks and then need to use them in the future sometime?

Answer:Solved: Creating System Recovery Disks W7

The typical recovery discs made using the computer manufacturer's software wiil restore the computer hard drive to fresh from the factory conditions. Any software you installed and files you saved after purchasing the computer will not be recovered. There is third party software available that can create a snapshot of the current hard drive contents and burn it to CDs or DVDs. You can then use those disc to restore all contents as they were they day you made the discs.

If you do not make the backup discs, you will have problems getting the computer running if you ever have the need to replace the hard drive or a virus trashes the hard drive contents. At that point, you would either need to purchase recovery discs from the manufacturer, if still available, or purchase and install a full version of Windows and then hunt down the hardware drivers.

I?m not quite sure why this error appears but some users here in the forum reported about the errors while recovery disk creation. In most cases the usage of other and different DVDs has helped to sort out this issue.

I was trying to make a set of of system recovery disks(Win7) but was unable to finish the last 2 out of 3 disks needed due to write errors on low quality DVD's. When I got a new set of DVD-R disks to finish the job, I found that the Recovery Disk Creation program starts off where it ended. I need to be able to start the disk creation from the beginning but the disk creation program won't let me do this. Is there a way?

I have just bought a T520 Laptop with Win7 pre-installed. I setup all the software and I want to create the factory recovery disks. I open the ThinkVantage Tools, select Factory Recovery and it it brings up a small dialog box to create media. The drop down box is empty, there is no dvd drive listed. (I certainly have one, I've loaded software from it)
I go to my computer, system properties, device manager and there is no DVD/CD device listed! I right click on the computer and 'Scan for hardware changes'. Eventually it comes back and says it cannot find the DVD drive!
How do I create recovery disks if Lenovo / Win 7 don't recognize the DVD drive?
Is there something else I need to install?
Is the DVD drive broken?
Thanks for any help

Ok, so first thing I do when I get a new PC...1.  Charge Battery2.  Start initially, go through any wizards to get into Windows for the first time3.  Reboot once4.  Log in to Windows5.  CREATE RECOVERY DISKS I mean I don't know how long ago but the trend has been vendors put either a recovery partition or provide imaging software to image the HD as is and this be your recovery disks... no problem... So I start the creating recovery disks process, and naturally it fails on the 3rd Disk... but it says to put in another blank disk and goes on... Now after I create a recovery disk I always put them to use and make sure they work... naturally it doesn't... results in a Blue Screen of Death.  No problem because I already knew I could reinstall from the Recovery Partition provided (I didn't do a complete HD recovery wiping out the recovery partition) I managed to recover just fine and tried to make a new set of Recovery Disks.......... now here's the kicker: I get a message saying "You can have only one copy of the Microsoft Windows operating system.  The Product Recovery Media Creator will exit now."  LOL Wouldn't be too much of an issue if they would have provided Windows 7 recovery disks w/ purchase instead of XP Pro only.  That I don't understand at all. So anyone know of how to reset the Recovery Media so I can created a NEW set of recovery disks?

Lenovo'ers I just got my ThinkPad a week ago. It could not complete its Windows Updates, seems there was corruption in the Windows Update registry (google 'windows update error 643', seems to be common). I tried a few Microsoft support tools to correct it, but in the end I was wasting too much time so decided to restore my laptop to factory state. I went to the ThinkPad tools from the Start Menu, where there was a tool to create system restore disks. I went through that process, and created "Boot" and "Data" recovery disks. I rebooted my laptop with the boot DVD, and it started the recovery. I opted to do a full factory reset. It started going through the process, but then stopped and asked  for the "Application and Drivers Disk 1". What? The disk creation process only produced a "Boot" and "Data" disk. I tried using the Data disk for Disk #1, and was relieved when that worked. Sadly, the process continued until it stopped again and asks for Application and Driver disk #2. Sadly, the 'Data' disk  does not work for this, and the restore process refuses to continue. I am stuck. My machine is now in a completely unusable state. The original parition has been wiped out, and the OS is not installed. Two questions: 1) what is wrong with the recovery process? Seems like a major problem with the tool producing 'Boot' and 'Data' disks, while the reinstaler expects different disks. How can this be?2) how can I restore my machine to factory s... Read more

Answer:T530 Recovery Process Broken, I have Boot and Data disks not Application and Drivers disks 1 and 2

Hello and welcome,
Sorry to hear about this
Your recovery partition is probably already wiped out by the aborted restore, but what happens if you press the "Think" button during boot?  (or whatever it's called these days)  That might have given you a factory restore option _before_ you tried the DVDs.
Failing that, give support a call and explain the situation.  They can send you a DVD set.  They normally charge for these, but in a situation like yours they are often provided free.  I can't speak for Lenovo - that's just my personal experience.

The new brand machine should support 2 partitions and on E partition you should see an HDD recovery folder which would contains the image files which are needed to create an Recovery disk!

It?s strange but I think you cannot create an recovery disk because there is no recovery folder on E partition

I just spent the better part of a whole day trying to create backups for my newly acquired Lenovo laptop.  I am sure there must be instructions somewhere but I could not find them. For the Lenovo Recovery Disk set, you find it under System and Security.... What I discovered by trial and error was that when prompted to insert a clean disk, it means a factory-fresh, never-written-to disk.  Use an unFormatted disk.  When a fresh disk is inserted, a dialog box appears with two choices. Nothing says it must be configured as "Mastered", but that is what is needed.  DO NOT choose "Live File System".  Since the Live File System choice presents first, not knowing any better, I selected that.  Bad choice... kept getting demand to erase the disk, but there are no options to choose "erase".  If you push it, it will just report back error code rc=31. After having ruined several DVDs, I figured out I needed to choose "Mastered" and everything went smoothly from there on out.  I would advise that you use a CD for the first disk of the recovery set, though, as the small file created wastes a DVD.  Use DVDs for the remaining disks.  In my case, I ended up with a 3 disk set.  Once done, you can't go back and create another boot disk using a CD, because only one set is allowed, so my set is 3 DVDs, the first one only holding 244Mb of data.  Disk one is the "boot" disk, but the prog... j have a Thinkpad T410 . about 4 months ago i used paragon partiton manager because i wanted to create a drive with 400 Gigabyte and  i reduced drive c to 50  Gigabyte, and windows seven didnt allow me. after i did that i had trouble starting windows for 2 days and i still dont know how  i got it i want to restore my laptop to its factory settings. i have drive Q and i have the files in it. but i cant make the disks. it says "unable to find files for recovery media".I did make a recovery disk before i used the paragon program but now it doesnt work either. so i want to have another one. what should i do?

Answer:Creating Recovery Disks & unable to restore my laptop to its factory settings

You are in trouble if you try to make drive C to 50G in the first place. Anyway if you still have Drive Q, there may be hope. You will need to restore your laptop to the factory settings from the thinkvantage blue button. Before you do it, backup ALL the data that you have. Then reboot the laptop and press the Thinkvantage button, go through the restoration to factory settings. After completed, you should use some cloning software like Norton Ghost or Acronis Home or even the default window 7, it has a great backup software build it. Backup and create an image of the system too. In the future, if you need to restore to factory standard, just use the cloned backup. Another obscure way is to google or search in this forum, there is a settings that can changed the backupstate of lenovo form 1 to 0 which allows you to create another set of recovery discs. I have heard of it, some says it work, some don't

Hi there,

Can anybody help me please.

My satellite pro L300 laptop crashed which I have had repaired.
Unfortunately I have no recovery disks for the operating system eg Windows Vista.

I can not find how to get these disks from the Toshibe website or to be honest what these disks are correctly refered as.

Any help would be appreciated..

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - Where to get the Recovery DVD

The notebook supports the HDD recovery option. This means that you can reinstall the Toshiba image without using the Recovery DVD. You have to boot notebook and press the F8 button. The advanced boot menu will appear and there you should choose the first option ?Repair my computer?. Then choose Toshiba recovery (last option) and start the installation.

After this installation you could use the Toshiba preinstalled burning software called ?TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator? to create a own recovery DVD

But if you have formatted the HDD the repair option will not work because the recovery folder was also deleted. In such case you will be not abele to create the own Recovery DVD.

But you could order it from here:

And my hard disk was single partition and Microsoft office was not working on this notebook and I used that CD to fix these problems.

But I lost my previous Windows 7.

Now it is Windows Xp SP 3 on my computer.
But I am not satisfied with XP want Windows 7.

How can i get it again for free?

Please let me know that what is right Recovery CD for "Toshiba Satellite L300". ?

Answer:What is right Recovery CD for Satellite L300?

>I recently bought "Toshiba Satellite L300" which had Windows 7 operating system but the Recovery CDs had Windows XP.

Hmm? this is strange? I have no clue what Satellite L300 this is but usually an L300 series was preinstalled with Vista Home Premium

So I?m wondering why Win 7 was preinstalled and why you get Win XP recovery disk?

Usually the L300 should be equipped with an HDD recovery partition which would contain the Toshiba image.
It should be able to recover the new notebook using the HDD recovery and this should help you reinstall the Vista OS.

In my opinion you should talk with your dealer? maybe the notebook was a replacement device????
Who knows?

Problem's with SATELLITE L300-13R, fails to start Vista.
Pressing F12 with recovery dvd, starts loading from dvd, then stops after about 30 second leaving a blank screen.

We also have seen the following message

INFO: An unexpected I/O error has occured

There is also an explanation that it may be due to an external device that has not been disconnected properly or a hardware error.

The recovery discs worked fine a few weeks ago.

Any other ideas?

I have a question about the recovery for a Tosihba Satellite L300-1AY with Windows Vista pre-installed.
I wanted to recover my laptop and when I pressed F8 during start-up I could choose the restore my computer.

But after that part I got a message-box (System Recovery Options) telling me that the installed programs could not start and the only option I had was press OK so the computer would turn off.

I was wondering if there was any way this could be fixed or if there's another way to recover my computer.

Answer:Satellite L300-1AY recovery not working

You could recover the notebook using the Recovery DVD which you have hopefully created before this issue happened?
Did you create such recovery DVD?

If not then only the HDD recovery option can be used.
For this you have to press F8 after notebook has been powered up.
Then choose ?Repair my Computer?.
Then a new window will appear and then you could choose Toshiba Recovery.

If this procedure will not start up and if you will be not able to use the HDD recovery then you need a Toshiba recovery DVD.

If you didn?t create the recovery DVD then you could order it from here:

I doubt this is possible?

What you could do is to start the Toshiba HDD recovery procedure pressing the F8 button.
Then a boot menu should appear and there you should choose the first option called ?Repair my Computer?.
Then a new window should open providing a option called Toshiba recovery.
Choose it and usually the HDD recovery should start.

But this procedure is possible only if the second partition and the HDD recovery folder have not been changed

I don?t think that your A100 recovery disk will run on L300.
Both notebooks are completely different and were equipped with different hardware specifications and therefore the drivers which are on the A100 will be not compatible with L300.

Furthermore I doubt that you will be able to perform the Recovery setup using the A100 disk on L300. Usually you should get an error message.

I'm needing to restore to factory settings and have SOMEHOW managed to delete my recovery partition...
After some little playing around and reading i figured it best to just order a recovery CD from the Toshiba backup media thingy.

Now, while reading around there were quite a few people who said that their recovery CDs didn't work because they had no recovery partition.

So, before i start throwing ?30 around i figure it best to ask :

*Will the recovery CD restore my laptop back to it's factory settings WITHOUT the recovery partition?*

Thanks for any help :D

Answer:Satellite L300 - Recovery CD question

If you have the recovery DVD then you could use it in order to restore the notebook to factory settings.
Many people deleted the HDD recovery image on the second partition and were NOT able to create the recovery disk. But if you have such disk then the HDD recovery files are not needed to perform the recovery procedure.

I need help using system restore.

I have a Toshiba L300 1A3 wines. vista.

The system fell, tile lack of recovery. Attempting to repair through F8 initially went, everything was going according to the directions and suddenly the computer turns off after a few seconds to turn on and nothing.

Nothing works, None, F8,, 0 '' and others.

There are only F2 and F12. After pressing any key is only a sound signal and nothing works.
Is there a chance to revive it or is it better to give somewhere to the site?

Answer:Satellite L300-1A3 - recovery problem

First of all: this is English language community - Please post in English!

Now some questions:
Is HDD recognized by BIOS (first BIOS page)?
If not, the HDD is dead and you would need to replace the HDD.
After that you would need to use Toshiba recovery disk in order to install the system again.

If you don?t have such disk, you will need to use Microsoft Windows CD to install the OS.
Essential drivers are available on Toshiba EU driver website.

By the way: such questions were posted many times in this forum. Go through singles threads and read the recommendations.

Purchased laptop 3 months ago, my son has homework on it (40 pages). Laptop suddenly stopped working. When I try and boot it up it tries to start laptop in repair mode, loads files, goes to load up vista then I get grey screen saying (System recovery options) installed programme cannot start turn off computer.

Gone through every single f8 routine and the only one of interest is disable auto restart on system failure where I get error message : Stop oxoooooo24 (ox00190444,ox85a6bdeo,oxc0000102,0x00000000).

Didn't create recovery disc so phoned Toshiba have received put in and loaded file up It eventually comes to a point where to continue it will erase all data on disc. Which is what I don't want. Then took disc out, but it had loaded enough drivers to enable me to have a look in dos. When I look for the C drive, come back with a messagesaying unreadable. When I look in the D drive there are files including one saying HDD recovery. (i assume vista automatically partitions disc)

Anyway any suggestions? There is one file I need which is a works document (wps). Is there anyway I can recover from the d drive in HDD recovery through dos? any suggestions?
If I run the recovery disc will it delete both partitions or just work on C: and then through D: I maybee able to recover document?

Answer:Question about HDD recovery on Satellite L300

As I can see you have tested all options using F8.
Does it mean you have tested ?safe mode??
Can you start notebook in ?safe mode??

If your work is saved on partition D you can start recovery installation (F8 ? Repair my computer) and Vista will be installed again but all data saved on partition D will be there again.
- When you use HDD recovery option - partition C will be deleted only.
- When you use recovery DVD the whole HDD will be formatted.

Hi all!

Have tried numerous places and can't find the answers I'm looking for, so here I am.

My nephew has a Toshiba Satellite L300 - 149 that won't boot up past the Windows Vista log in screen.

I want to do a full system restore on it (ie. back to factory settings) .

Now, it was shipped without recovery discs as seems to be the norm these days so, after much seraching I found the directions for pressing either the F8 and the zero key on boot up.

Now.... F8 brings up a menu (zero key does nothing) but the menu (Advanced Options or something) DOES NOT include the option to repair the system. It brings up a list of other things including....

There are a couple of other options too, but not a one that offers a complete recovery.

Can anyone shed light on how I can do a full restore via the HDD, or whether this model even supports the option? (There's been absolutely no tampering with the OS since it was purchased.) Failing that, where can I get restore discs from?

Hello Andy

Unfortunately there is no some kind of ?magic solution?. Either recovery installation works or not and there is no way to get it work somehow.

All you can do is to start recovery installation again, if possible. Please do this and send some feedback.

To be honest I don?t understand why you didn?t create recovery DVDs following Toshiba?s advice. If something goes wrong with HDD or HDD recovery image cannot be used you will be able to use recovery DVDs for OS installation.

I hope you can help.
I want to restore a L300 laptop back Factory Defaults, (XP).

I'm not able to boot to Last known good config or any Safe Mode anymore after several viruses infected the laptop and the restore points failed after antivirus packages identified them as infected and removed them among other items.

I have the Original Toshiba Recovery Disk and it loads fine and goes through the motions of unpacking...

...Finishing on 'Remove Media', and I click OK. Lastly clicking exit on the recovery application.
The laptop powers off.

I turn the laptop back on, and screen flickers a couple of times, shows windows logo and reboots. This repeats.

Run out of ideas....

F2 Bios setting look ok.

What can I do?

Answer:Recovery does not complete on Satellite L300

Not sure what could cause this but I think you should start with HDD check.
I use very nice freeware software called Drive Fitness Test. Use this software in order to check the HDD for malfunction.

If the tool would detect some HDD problems, then you should replace the software.

By the way: are you able to boot the notebook using an Live CD lie Knopix Live CD (Linux) or an Windows live environment WinPE or BartPE? Check this.
Usually the live cd does not need any installation? you boot simply from the CD in order to load the OS.

You cannot download this.
The Toshiba Recovery disk creator is preinstalled and you should always create the recovery disk BEFORE changing the OS or something on the HDD.
Saving the recovery files on another partition will not help you because the Toshiba Recovery disk creator will not recognize this?

Now, you will need to order the Recovery disk if you want get back the notebook?s factory settings.

Hi buddy,

What OS you have installed now? If the preinstalled OS from Toshiba is still installed, you can create a Toshiba recovery disk if you start the ?Toshiba recovery disk creator?. This tool is preinstalled on your computer in start > all programs > Toshiba.

If you don?t have the original OS anymore, you can order a recovery disk from Toshiba directly:

The disk is already formatted succesfully, but the procedure stops when following error appears "File creation error - Data error <cyclic redundancy check>. Copying of Recovery Base files failed! Prees any key to continue...".
Then everything in DOS stops: X:\windows\system32>_
How can I proceed, with what DOS-commands?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Recovery failed on Satellite L300-19F

When the recovery procedure starts everything runs automatically and if there is no problem with recovery image, DVDs you?ve created or HDD the whole recovery procedure will run properly.

You cannot have any influence on this and you cannot put some DOS commands to continue recovery procedure.
Do you use recovery DVDs on machine they are created for?
Have you changed anything on the notebook like HDD upgrade?

You can?t download the Toshiba recovery disk but you can order a new one here:

By the way: If the preinstalled OS from Toshiba is still installed you can also use the HDD recovery option. Therefore go in advanced boot menu and select ?repair my computer?. After this you have factory settings again and you can create a new recovery disk.
But remember: It?s only possible on preinstalled OS. I assume it was Vista?!

I normally use DBAN to wipe my disks, however, I'm interested in doing this on a laptop without destroying the recovery partition.

Basically on a Satelitte L300 I would like to wipe the HDD using DBAN (Darik's Boot & Nuke) (but preserve the recovery partition) and then do a clean install of Windows 7. Is this possible or do I need to look at another alternative?

Answer:Re: Satellite L300 - Keep recovery partition when using DBAN

I don?t use DBAN and cannot give you proper answer but one thing I must say: create recovery DVD using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery disc creator? and after doing this you can do whatever you want.

If something goes wrong you can install OS using these discs.
Please note: when you install own Win7 using non-Toshiba disc saved recovery image has no sense anymore because you will not be able to start HDD recovery anymore. To get factory settings again you must use Toshiba recovery DVDs.

Yesterday my Laptop L300-20D completely crashed.
When I restarted it, it wouldn't load up so i switched it off and it took me to recovery.

When the recovery was finished it restarted again and started to boot up, but after a few seconds it blue screened. I tried safe mode. Nothing. I went back to recovery and it told me that recovery wasn't working.

I have no idea why it crashed bacause i hadn't dropped or banged it.
I remember it making this weird click sound, like it would click repeatedly 8 times really fast, and then stop for a second and do it again.

I have no idea what is wrong with it??

Answer:Satellite L300-20D crashed - BSOD after recovery

> I remember it making this weird click sound, like it would click repeatedly 8 times really fast, and then stop for a second and do it again.
This sounds like a HDD issue and I think the HDD is crashing so it causes this weird click sound.

In your case I would check the HDD using a special diagnostic tool like Drive Fitness Test. Use Google to find this tool or another one. It?s freeware and easy to use. If you download the iso-image it creates a bootable disk where you can start this test from.

Alternative you can try the Toshiba recovery disk. Normally the recovery disk works always.

My son has a Satellite L300-1AQ running vista. Suddenly the laptop will no longer load and the auto repair options fails too. There is a blue screen appearing but only for a second when I try the repair option - then the laptop shuts down. We do not have any recovery disks.

I also have a Satellite laptop L300D-13S which works ok and presume I could obtain a recovery disk from that - but prob diff drivers etc.

Can anyone advise me how best to my sons laptop (Im not concerned about data recovery as all backed up already) but do want to get it back to factory settings incl Vista. Not sure whether using a recovery disk from my laptop is an option to consider - instinctively it isnt as never that simple.

Any advice welcome please.

Answer:Satellite L300-1AQ - Can I use the recovery disk from L300D?

Hi mate,

I can?t imagine that the recovery disk from Satellite L300D will work on Satellite L300. The hardware platform is different because one machine is equipped with Intel CPU and the other one with AMD CPU so there is a big difference.

Furthermore in worst case it could be a hardware issue and in this case the recovery disk would not work?

What you can do now? I think you have to options: Either you install Vista from a Microsoft disk or you order a Toshiba recovery disk:

After the installation from the Microsoft disk you can download all drivers on the Toshiba website. Then you will get also ?factory settings? back but it takes longer as recovery disk because it contains an image where already all drivers and tools are included/installed.

I hope I could help you a little bit. :)

My laptop started giving problems (slow booting & hanging inbetween) so I tried to re-instal with recovery disk but whaile installation it ask for lang. & confirmation data deletion and after minutes installation stoped & turn to Dos mode (Admin to X:).

When I restarted labtop it shows Bootmgr failed.

Then I contact service center & they replaced the HDD with new, but still the same problem.

I even tried to instal XP SP2, after copying files it shows HDD not found.

Pls help

L300 - 10Q series

Pls advice also how to check Windows XP is of 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks again

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-10Q - Can't install with the recovery disk and XP SP2

If you try to install your notebook with the Microsoft installation disk you need the SATA drivers. You can find it on the Toshiba website.
You must load the drivers from an external FDD or you integrate it in a new CD with nLite (

For the recovery disk you don?t need such drivers because they are already on the disk.
If you get the same problem with the recovery disk you should check your HDD with Drive Fitness Test (Google is your friend).

I bought a Toshiba Satellite L300 and erroneously I deleted the HDD recovery folder located in the partition E, now I cannot anymore make a recover of my system in the case something goes wrong. I am wondering how to reinstall HDD recovery disk creator.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Recovery folder deleted

If you have deleted the HDD recovery folder you can?t create a recovery disk anymore.
You are also not able to reinstall Windows without disk.

Reinstalling the Toshiba Recovery Disk creator will not solve this problem. This is only the program that doesn?t contain the files for recovery.

So in your case you need a recovery disk. You can get one from a local ASP or you order here a new one from Toshiba directly:

I have today taked delivery of a bright, shiny, brand new recovery disk, direct from Toshiba. I was under the impreession it would wipe everything from the hdd and recreate a factory install with HDD recovery partition (which is what I want) but it fails every time at the same place with the following error message:-

[WARNING] W\:sources\boot.wim [uncompress File: (seq. 90) -> file corrupted in block at offset 024D8020

Any ideas how to solve this or have I waited 2 weeks for a dud CD??

Ta, Fred

Answer:Satellite L300 - Fails during recovery installation

I have also Satellite L300 but never had a problem with the Toshiba recovery disc.

What happens if you install Windows using a Microsoft disc? Does it work or do you get an error message too? If yes it might be a hardware issue, HDD, RAM or something else.

Furthermore I did read here in forum that it?s sometimes useful to format the whole HDD before using Toshiba recovery disc.
Check this!

I'm trying restore to factory settings but not having any luck.

I have tried pressing F8 when toshiba logo comes up, it goes to the advance boot screen and I select repair computer and it starts windows. I don't get the recovery options.
I have also tried pressing zero when powering up the laptop just beeps at me.

What im I doing wrong?

its a L300-149 running vista

Answer:Cannot recover Satellite L300 using HDD recovery option

As I can see all you do is right.
Switch your notebook ON and press F8 several times and you will enter Advanced Boot options

The first option should be ?Repair your computer? and after two or three steps you should see System Recovery Options and last option there must be ?Toshiba recovery?.

Have you used this recovery options in the past or you try to use it for the first time?

However I know want to make a recovery disk as I forgot to to do that before. I have downloaded the Recovery disk creator but no longer have the recovery partition as they wiped everything when windows was reinstalled.

Any ideas on what is best to do?

Thanks :)

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-1G5 - Where to get Toshiba recovery disk?

That's the point that you had to do it when bought your laptop. Now, you can't make it as it's not available anymore on your laptop. Installing Ubuntu you wiped it.
Now, you can:

1 Order [Recovery disk|] from Toshiba for money
2 Get windows copy disk to install. All drivers you can find on the [European Toshiba Driver Page|]

We have a Satellite L300-149.
Was running really slowly so wanted to reset it to factory settings.

Did the 'press F12 when starting, put disk in' etc etc BUT have a horrible feeling that I put a disk in that actually belonged to a different Toshiba we used to use a U300.
The 'give away' was that the user manual for the U300 is now on the desktop on the Satellite :-/

I hoped that this wouldn't be a major problem BUT the F8 key has now disappeared making it impossible to connect to the internet.

I looked online and read that the L300 sometimes doesn't come with a disk as the info is kept on a separate part of the hard drive so hoped I could reset it back to factory settings again but when I click F2 on start up and go to the option to restore it, noting happens.

Can anyone please help??????

Answer:Help needed with system recovery Satellite L300-149

Forget the HDD recovery now?
You have recovered the system using another disk and this has deleted the HDD recovery image files. So this option is NOT possible!

You are right? the L300 and all other notebooks are not delivered with Recovery disks.
The recovery disk has to be created using the preinstalled software called Recovery Disk Creator. But this is also NOT possible because you removed the preinstalled system and the files which are needed for such recovery disk are not available anymore!

But if everything work properly except of the WLan FN + F8 key, then I would recommend to install only the Wlan driver. I think the key does not work because the right WLan driver is not installed.

I think the Satellite L300-149 supports the Wlan Realtek RTL8187B chip.
So install the right Wlan driver which you can find here:

Okay, so I've lost all my disks for my laptop (story tl;dw) and then it dies. I order a new recovery disk image from Toshiba and start running repairs from it.

Firing it up, I press F12, select CD/DVD from the Boot Menu and press Enter.
It gives me a message 'Windows is loading flies..." and a progress bar.
Progress bar completes, clears the screen, then there's about thirty seconds of the 'Microsoft thinking bar' animation, the computer stops making hard drive/CD drive noises.

Nothing happens.

For ten minutes, nothing happens.

Except a chunk of my electricity bill is consumed by the blank backlit screen.

Any words of advice, support, etc. greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite L300-147 Recovery disk problem

At first I can say that recovery disc cannot be used for repairs. You can use it for clean OS installation only.
Described behaviour is definitely not OK and you should be able to see menu with listed language options.

What you can do?
I?m afraid not much. Set BIOS to default settings and try several times to see if you will be lucky and recovery installation will starts properly.
For testing purposes you can try to obtain Microsoft installation disc and see if operating system installation will starts properly.

Hello everybody,

I have reinstall my Windows Vista, the last score before reinstaling Vista is 3,2, but after reinstall and download driver software from official web site I have score 3,1. I think there's something wrong ???
So by default when i buy my laptop, I don't recive any disc's with drivers or Vista.

I have two questions.

1. Can I request disc with drivers for my model by Toshiba support?
2. If I reinstall my Vista, can I lose my Warranty?

Thank you a lot!

I have a Satellite L300 1AS Laptop running Vista and I want to restore back to factory settings as when bought.

I created the 2 DVD restore discs when first setup.
When I boot from DVD drive with restore discs I get to choose language then that's it. When I click 'next' I can't go any further. I can move mouse but that's it. I have tried booting up then pressing F8 and then repair Windows but only get a black screen and nothing else.

Is there anything else I can try to format my drive back to factory settings

Answer:Satellite L300 - Nothing happens if I start the recovery disk

What is the reason you want to run Recovery in the first place? Was it not booting properly? Was it giving a BSOD?

Can you hear noises from the Hard Disk?

Test the Hard Disk for errors by using DFT.
DFT Download:

Download the ISO File and burn it to a CD-R Disc (There is also a Floppy Disk version if that's easier).
If you dont know how to burn an ISO file, read this guide:
Restart your laptop and boot from the DFT Disc.
Choose the "Advanced" Test and let it run (it may take an hour or so).
If you see a red message box, the HDD is faulty.
An error od 0x70 means there are bad sectors and the HDD needs replacing.

Also test the RAM for errors.

I was using system recovery. It got half way through and it stopped.
Now the laptop won?t do anything. It is a Vista preload

Any help would be great.

Answer:Recovery load stopped at Satellite L300

Try to start the HDD recovery again.
Press the F8 button immediately after notebook has been powered up.
Then choose ?Repair my Computer? and choose Toshiba Recovery in new window.

The HDD recovery should start and should reinstall the Windows Vista again.

Check it out!

I'm in desperate need of assistance, hope someone can help me here.
On booting up laptop one day I got the dreaded ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM.

So I bought a recovery disk from the media shop for my laptop.

Now, I've tried all the F8 stuff but this doesn't work for some reason on this laptop.

Anyways, disk arrived and did exactly what it said on the back:
Insert disk and powerdown machine
Press F12 on boot up and select Optical Drive.

Right now when it powers back up, I get the WINDOWS IS LOADING FILES.
Then the MICROSOFT CORPORATION (with the bar above it), once this goes on a few seconds the CD/DVD drive stops and then get a black screen.

It doesn't go any further than that.
Tried restarting laptop without disk in, and all that is coming up then is
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

What do I do?????
Can I get hold of the Media Shop and tell them that the disk doesn't work? if so what is their e-mail address?????

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Recovery disk stops

In my opinion it?s really hard to say what the reason is for this. It could be also an issue with the CD/DVD drive or the HDD.
So have you tested a Microsoft installation disk? You can try it with a XP or Vista disk from Microsoft. If you have booted from it try to format the HDD. Sometimes it?s necessary to format the HDD before you can use the Toshiba recovery disk. On this way you can also test if your CD/DVD drive is working.

If the Microsoft disk is also not working it could be a problem of the HDD. You can check the HDD with a diagnostic tool like Drive Fitness Test. Google is your friend to find it ;)

Good luck and if you have more questions, please let us know!

Mate has an L350 which is completely knackered and unfortunately has no recovery disks. Could I use my recovery disks for my L300 model or will that just make things worse?

Answer:Satellite L350 - Can I use the recovery disk from the L300?

You could try but it may be missing Drivers or it may BSOD depending on the hardware differences.

Can you run Recovery from the HDD? Press F8 when Windows starts and choose the Repair/Recovery option.

Otherwise you would need to buy a replacement recovery disc from Toshiba.

As far as I know Satellite L300 was delivered without recovery DVD and only with HDD recovery so I presume it is not original recovery DVD.

So I got cocky and didn't install any anti-virus software and ended up getting drowned in spyware so instead of going through the hassle of trying to remove each one whilst they slowed the computer to a halt I decided to reset to factory condition.

It seemed easy but now after the first part (a command window with a percentage) it told me that the HDD recovery had failed.
What can I do now as I cannot use my computer, I don't have a Vista disk because Toshiba claimed I could recover from the harddrive I could use XP if there is no quick fix as I have a disk for that but how easy is it to find and install all the drivers, by the way it's an Satellite L300.

I have no idea why the recovery partition isn't working as well, so what do you guys recommend I should do?

Thanks, Guy.

Did you try to start the HDD recovery again?
Simply press the F8 button after notebook powering up and choose ?Repair my Computer?.

Usually this should help to start the HDD Recovery again.

If this will not be possible then you will not be able to recover the notebook without the Toshiba Recovery disk.
It?s really stupid situation if you didn?t create the recovery disk before this issue happened :(

Well, your last chance would be this website:

Following Mark's suggestion in the shipping thread I thought I'd get this started here.  I noticed a couple of people talking about making recovery disks, and then someone else jumped in and said that a bootable disk and maybe a few others should have come with the machine.  Can someone clarify?  Were we supposed to get (for example) an XP boot/install CD with the machine, or not?  I got nothing with mine, but I have a whole bunch of extra stuff on the hard drive.Damien

Answer:Recovery disks, boot disks etc

Generally no recovery cds/dvds are included in the box. It would appear that sometimes there have been XP recovery sets included with some Vista TPs, but this is not the "rule". Sets can be ordered from Lenovo and may be liable to cost something. It is up to the user to create his/her own recovery set using the tool provided in -Start - Programs - Think Vantage - Create Recovery Media. Be sure to create a set, lower part of the window, and not just a boot cd, upper part of the window.
