Satellite P850 display turns off after only minute or two of inactivity

Question: Satellite P850 display turns off after only minute or two of inactivity

I have my Display settings set to turn off display after 1 hour when on power and 10 minutes when on battery.
I have a screen saver set up to go on after 10 minutes.

However, my display often (but not always) turns itself off after only a minute or two of inactivity.

Can anyone explain this weird behavior?
It starts up immediately I move the mouse but I just don't like things happening that I haven't scheduled.

Preferred Solution: Satellite P850 display turns off after only minute or two of inactivity

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite P850 display turns off after only minute or two of inactivity

Unfortunately I don't have some logical explanation for this behaviour, especially if this happen ?often?. Try to disable screensaver and check if this will happen again and again. Change also display settings and check if there s some difference.

I have a dual monitor setup running windows 10 home, and I have been facing the problem of my screens turning off after a minute or two of inactivity. My power setting is set to never turn off the screen, not sure what is causing this.

Answer:Screen turns black after a minute of inactivity

Check your Sleep settings. It sounds like your computer is set to sleep after a few minutes.
If not, download an updated driver for your Video card.

My display is set to go to standby (turn off) after 10mins of inactivity. I was able to turn it back on and resume working only by moving my mouse or pressing anything on the keyboard.

Recently though I can only get it back to life by pressing ctrl+alt+del. My settings have not changed, and the settings are not set to lock the account upon resume, but this problem still occurs.

It's a desktop computer running Win7 x64 Professional, graphics card is Ati Radeon 4890.

Answer:Display turns on after inactivity only on ctrl+alt+del

Right click desktop>Select Personalize>Select Screensaver>Select Advance Power Options>Select the amount of time for it to remain idle before turning off the display, or as I do, and select Never.

I have used this site before for help with my computer problems and it never failed, but now I can't find the answer, hope this thread helps

I have had my pc for 5 years now, it always worked fine.

GTX 770

Last week the monitor started to turn off every 10 minutes while watching a movie or playing music. The pc didn't shutted down, only the display turned off and the sound of the movie continued, it didnt even stuttered. So im discarding a heat up of the system. I have cheked the energy plan and they are set to never turn of the display and never put the system in suspension.

I have reinstalled drivers, chequed all conecctions of the pc, everything looks without issue so i guess is not a hardware problem.

I havent isntalled anything new, no new hardware, nothing out of the orndinary
I guess Windows somehow is not recognizing the energy plan

What can I do to resolve this issue?
Many thanks

Answer:Display turns off after exactly 10 minutes of inactivity

Welcome to the TenForums

This post is almost a exact duplicate of a post from Oct 2015 on Tom's Hardware.
Display turns off after exactly 10 minutes - [Solved] - Windows 7

Did you use it as a base to describe your issue? Did you follow the recommendations in that thread to resolve.

If this truly describes your problem and it started a week ago, Window updates were released Dec 13/16 meaning they were likely installed last week. One recommendation was to execute a system restore.

Hi all,

I have the following model of Toshiba:
Part Number: PSPKFE-00P007EN

Every time I turn on my computer, touchpad disables after seconds. What is more, I can't unblock it with the function button (F5) because it doesn't work. Other functional buttons work fine (for example sound or brightness adjustments).

Any clue what is going on?
I appreciate any help!

Hi guys

has anyone had / seen a problem (like I'm getting) where the wifi card over heats and then even turns off and is not seen in device manager / the led on the front goes out!

I turn the laptop do nothing other than leave it in windows for about 5 mins and then I firstly lose network connection (by connecting the laptop via cat5 it works fine) a few mins later the card isnt seen in windows and after a restart the led at the front goes out!

I also think the problem with the keyboard is linked as the whole of the right hand side of the laptop's keyboard doesn't work! (the number pad, the backspace key the delete key and its spreading!)

Any advice on this 1?

Answer:Satellite P850-138: WiFi turns off and is not seen in device manager

First of all the Wlan card cannot overheat.
Secondly I assume your keyboard is faulty since this cannot be caused by software problem.

I have no idea if both issues are related to each other but since this seems to be a hardware related issue, you should contact an Toshiba service to check the hardware.
The P850 is not very old, so warranty should be still valid.

I'm having an annoying problem with my new Yoga related to the display and have not seen any other posts with a similar complaint so perhaps this is a simple fix that I'm just not able to sort out on my own. My display turns off after 1 minute of inactivity. The only means for changing behavior like this that I am aware of is through the Control Panel Power Options. My settings for "turn off the display" are 10 minutes on battery and Never while plugged in (note screen shot attached). Regardless of my settings, the screen turns off after 1 minute. I've changed the settings to multiple configurations and restarted with no change in behavior. Perhaps there's some other settings area, maybe something specific to Lenovo that I'm not aware of (since this is my first Lenovo laptop). Anyone with similar problems or insight?

Answer:Yoga display turns off after 1 minute

This may be a Windows 8 issue. I finally fixed this problem by identifying the screen saver as the issue (and I wasn't using a screen saver). Type "lock the computer" into the search box after clicking the search charm, which brings up the screen saver dialog box. Mine was set to 1 minute, though I'd never set it myself. If you can't change it, choose a screen saver and you should be able to do so (and can then switch back to no screen saver). BUT, here's the problem. Other things you install (or settings within things you install) can apparently change and override whatever you type in for the delay time. Try applying your new time and exiting from the dialog box, then open it back up again. I was finding that it kept going back to 1 minute. To reset things so that you can get control again, type "user accounts" into the search box and when the dialog box comes up, choose "Reset Security Policies". Then you can go back to the screen saver dialog and successfully change the delay time. See for some detail.

My laptop has been doing this for a while now, the screen will turn off after only a minute or two of idleness. It's really annoying if I'm working on homework and I'm writing something down when the computer just goes to sleep on me. I have checked all settings, even advanced, and it's all set to at least 30-35 minutes before the computer should go to sleep. Now that I think about it, it seems to happen most often when the laptop is plugged in to charge. Sometimes restarting the computer makes it stop doing it for a while, but often it won't help. I took screen shots to show all the settings that may affect this, and that they're all as they should be. I've even tried contacting the Lenovo tech people online, and I've had someone remotely look at my computer, and they weren't able to figure out what was wrong. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I'd like to avoid sending it in for work if possible.

Hello guys. I am having difficulty with my computer. About 1 month ago I changed the power saving options to put the display to sleep after 1 minute, but when I attempted to change it back, nothing changes. I have set it to put the display to sleep after
5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, any and all minutes, but my display will not stay on for more than 60 seconds unless I move my mouse.
I have selected to reset factory settings in the same screen, I have attempted to restore a previous setup, and I have rebooted the computer multiple times (even a clean reboot), but nothing seems to work. I have also attempted to delete third party applications
that might be affecting it. Still no luck. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey all, hope someone here has a solution for this, since I'm going crazy.

I have an HP dv7 laptop connected via VGA to a second monitor. The screen(s) turn off and the computer goes to sleep after a minute despite my best efforts. I have every setting that I can find set to 'never,' including the power options, advanced power options, screen saver, etc. Any ideas of something I'm missing? I have a suspicion this is related to running 2 monitors but hopefully there's a fix. Thanks for any help!

Edit: I think I might have fixed it by adding a registry fix to allow the setting of 'System Unattended Timeout' to 0 minutes. Will continue testing, but I think I've fixed it for now!

I just buy a satellite Toshiba there two days now but the fan will turn on every minute when I go only on the web ...

Listening to music / watching videos, it is almost covered by the sound, but otherwise it's really headlock.

It blows every minute 10/20s, and force even if it is not that strong, it's really disturbing.

Is this normal?

Answer:Satellite C660 - fan turns on every minute

The fan would turn on if the CPU would be stressed.
You can check in task manager what process stresses the CPU and could check if you could disable this.

Furthermore I would recommend checking the Win 7 Power Management
There you can change the settings for cooling modules to battery optimized.

Hope this helps

I have just purchased a Satellite A200 1-AX PSA6 and install Windows XP SP2 + upgrade bios for winxp.
After 15 munutes of unactivirty (not pressing any keys or mouse move) I'm set in Power options in control panel - what Display must power OFF.
After this time display is switches off (black)!

But I'm can't wake up my notebook!
I'm press any key or move mouse, but display is still black!
But notebook work!
I can ping then by network or connect by remote acceess!

One way to solve this problem:
Close and open notebook!
A200 - in sleep mode and wake up with swithches ON display....

Answer:Display of Satellite A200 does not switch on after 15 min inactivity!

It seems that WXP does not work perfectly on new Vista designed notebooks. Before you live your notebook try to change profile in power settings (long battery life) and test the settings with this profile.
Tomorrow I will try to install WXP on my A200 and I am really interesting if I will notice the same.

The solution was to Reset the Security Polices under "User Accounts".

Hi to all and sorry for my bad english.

That's my problem: every minute of inactivity on my pc (eg: i'm watching a video) my screen becomes black (like the monitor was automatically turned off) and if i don't do anything like pressing a key or moving the mouse between a sec or two, my pc comes back at the win 7 blu screen where i can choose with wich account i want to log on to my pc.

Btw, this is the screen you reach disconnecting the user: actually, when i reach that screen my account (i'm administrator) results with the status "blocked": clicking on it, i come back to my desktop normally.

Well, i searched for all the optios in the control panel (i've also setted never for turning off the monitor o sleeping the hds - well, how can i explain, with that setting the pc couldn't shut down, never) but i still cannot resolve it. Well, everything works fine, but it's very frustrating seeing even a youtube video or reading something.

Hope i have been clear on my explanation, many thanks for any advices you can suggest to me.

I want my computer play slideshow instead of turning off screen. So i head into the change pc settings, selected a slideshow folder and clicked "When my pc is inactive, show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen". But the problem is,
this feature works only if i select screen turn off time 1 minute. After 1 minute my computer starts to playing slideshow instead of turning off screen. But if i select any other time option, my screen turn off after the time reach.

I made quick search about this but didnt find anything useful except machine inactivity limit setting. Then head to the administrative tools > local security policy > local policies > security options > "Interactive logon: Machine inactivity
limit". Then changed this to 600 seconds. But after this, my computer locks after 1 minute. I tried different values but all same, whatever i write in there (except 0), my computer locks everytime after 1 minute.

What can i do to fix them? Thank you very much

I have my laptop connected to an external monitor with HDMI. The laptop is always plugged into the A/C,and its cover is always closed, so it's used as a desktop computer.

I have noticed that the monitor often turns off very quickly, sometimes after only a few minutes of idle time. This is extremely annoying, and I don't know how to fix it. In Power Options, the "Turn off display after" setting is set to 10 minutes on battery and 30 minutes when plugged in.

Any idea what could be causing this? I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit.

I recently updated from Window 8.1 to Windows 10. The upgrade went fairly well except for my laptop monitor turning off after 1 or 2 minutes of inactivity. I have changed all power settings to appropriate times. At times, normally after a fresh restart, my screen saver kicks in correctly. However, after a few times of working correctly, my monitor begins to turn off again.

Answer:Monitor turns off after 2 minutes of inactivity

You might check the BIOS to see if there's a setting for the monitor, power saving, screen saver or something like that.

A year ago I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude E6400 through Newegg and the darn thing turned on as soon as I'd plug it in. I posted about it in sevenforums (laptop had Win7 Pro) and I was directed to go into BIOS, check for something related to that. I did that and there it was, a setting to power up when plugged in. I changed it to disabled and it fixed the problem.

That might not be the cause, but it sounds like you've set things in the OS, and BIOS would be about the only thing that would override the OS.

I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on a problem with a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 laptop that I can't seem to get to the bottom of.

The laptop has Windows XP professional installed and runs well, except for the fact that intermittently (could be 5 mins, could be 90 mins) the screen display turns what I can only describe as "blocky."

The O/S doesn't crash (I've run DOS and Diagnostic Tests when the problem has occured) as I can tell from vague mouse movements on-screen and HDD activity that the running software continues, except for the screen is unreadable with coloured blocks displayed.

Any ideas and/or suggestions as to what this issue might be, and how I might go about repairing it?

Answer:Satellite Pro 6000 display turns off sometimes

It is very strange issue.
Did you try to update the graphic driver? If not so please check this option.

Furthermore if the update doesn?t solve this issue so possibly there is something wrong with the hardware. In such cases it?s not easy to say what could be wrong.
In your case I would recommend to connect the external monitor if the problem occurs.
If the colored blocks will appear also on the external monitor so possibly the graphic card or the motherboard is corrupt.

But if the issue happens only on the internal notebook display so I would say there is something wrong with the display or FL-inverter.
In such cases you should contact the technicians for solving this problem because the guys have more experience as every common user like me and you.

good luck

My L350 laptop display switches itself off during bootup after displaying normally for about 2 seconds. I have a Satellite M300.

The display works on an external monitor.
I have tried the funtion buttons, moving the display has no effect.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite M300 display comes on then the backlight turns off

Are you able to increase the backlight using Fn + F7?
Did you check the power management option which controls the backlight for different power modes?
Please do this because the power management could decrease the backlight in order to save the battery power.

If changing theses settings will not help, then I would assume that small FL inverter malfunctions which could cause this issue.
In such case this parts needs to be replaced

This is only an option that you have to change in Windows Power Management. Go to power options and select the power profile that you are using. Edit the plan and scroll down until ?Power buttons and lid => Lid close action. Change this option to ?do nothing?. With Apply and OK you save this settings.

Now you can try it again. I must say for me it did work because I also work with external monitor. :)

I have noticed lately that while iam working on my laptop suddenly the screen display turns to one color sometimes white or at other times green one full color ... and i cannot get out of this state unless i reboot from the main switch then everything is back to normal ...
but this has been happening lately with me more than 5 times now .... can anyone tell me what could it be please????

Answer:Satellite M70-131: display turns to one color sometimes white or green

Does the same issue appear on the external monitor?
Did you test this?

If not it would be interesting to know if the same color issue happens on the second external monitor.
This would helps to clarify if this is a graphic card issue or the internal display (or FL inverter) malfunction.

If everything will appear correctly on the external monitor then it must be something wrong with the notebooks screen or as said above with the FL inverter.
In both cases the parts must be replaced!

But note; the internal display or the motherboard replacement is not cheap! Both parts are most expensive parts which are integrated in the notebook.

After my way home, when I turned notebook on, screen was only white (no other colors) and when I open it more, it turns NB off.

I guess so, that cable in display joint is damaged. Because external LCD (via VGA) works fine.

If I leave my computer alone for over 10 mins, the display turns of from non-use.

Sometimes, as usual, if you move the mouse it will turn back on normally.

Most of the time recently - and only since I got my Windows 10 update, but that may just be coincidental - when the display turns off, it seems the computer goes to sleep. If you shake the mouse, press the power button etc - it looks like its starting up again but it never completely gets there. The power up button will light up, the wifi sign will go orange and the computer will make a noise, but only for a few seconds before they stop and the lights switch back off. Then after a few seconds it tries to turn back on again, fails and repeats. I could leave it doing that for ages and it'll just be on repeat. It doesn't matter what I click, nothing helps it start up properly.

(Not sure if this matters, but if I left the Caps Lock button on before the display turns off, the light stays on no matter how many times you press the button. It's like its frozen, along with all the other buttons and screen)

The only way that I can get the computer to start up, is by holding down the power button to force a shut down and then powering back up from the start. Sometimes it'll start back up normally, othertimes it'll say "windows configurating" and sometimes it goes start to a green "restarting" screen after powering up.

It's very weird and it's getting annoying now because sometimes I've lost work that hadnt be... Read more

Last night I built a PC for the first time. I think I was pretty methodical and made all the right connections. When I turn on the computer, it seems like everything is fine. It sees the graphics card, the CPU, the RAM, and both hard drives. The dvd drive and the keyboard both work. The 4 case fans all come on. The CPU fan and the power supply fan both come on. The interior blue lights come on.

Then, after about 40 seconds, it just shuts off. No beeping, no error message... it just turns off. It doesn't matter what it's doing at the time. If I hit delete to go into the bios, while I'm in there it will just turn off. Or if I let it boot from the Vista CD, it'll be on a screen with a progress bar saying "Windows is loading files", it will get about a third of the way through the progress bar, and then shut off.

My biggest concern is that everything seems to be working perfectly and then it shuts down, and I don't know how I will find the problem. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know if this is software or hardware, sorry, reposted this since the old title wasn't not descriptive and would waste people's time reading for what the issue was.

I've had a Dell XPS M1330 on Vista 32 bit for 2.5 yrs. It's needed warranty repairs about every 6 months, usually the early generation LED screen. Nvidia 128 Geforce 8400 graphics card.

A month ago, I think the fan died. There's a chip broken off of one of the back panels. I hate Dell, and the only technician they ever send, I put off calling them for a week after the display started scrambling until it never came back. When it started, it gave messages that the display driver had quit working and repaired/reset itself. I searched Dell & Nvidia for drivers, nothing at Dell, Nvidia had lots of warnings about "get it from your manufacturer", so I didn't do it.

After hours of trouble-shooting, the Dell phone person was supposed to send a motherboard, fan and back panel. He sent a motherboard and front cover (that was fine). No fan.

Technician never re-started it, said anything else was software, there was an error that said Windows shut down improperly, repair or start normally? He never starts and tests after repairs, and always blames software.

It started. Stupidly, rather than backup, I did hours of Windows Updates. When it needed to restart, it would shut down, but not restart. It did start manually.

After that, I downloaded the update to WinASO, and ran ... Read more

Avis77, The Screen Saver is set to 1 minute, and has the "Require a Password" setting set. If you Right-Click on the desktop, a menu will pop-up. Select the Personalize option at the bottom of the menu. This will open a window. At the bottom-right is a button named "Screen Saver". Click it and make changes to the time and password settings. Hope this helps. Frank Olivio

Computer worked fine, I shut it down.  Turned it back on and when I did it stayed on for a minute and then shutdown.  It now just goes on and on at about minute intervals.  It won't boot up and F8 key brings nothing.

Answer:computer turns on and off by itself at about minute intervals, won't boot up

How far does it get in the boot process? Could be a failing (or failed) power supply.

Compaq R3000 laptop.

This laptop came to me several weeks ago with display lighting up only a few seconds after powering up, then going out.

First Attempt: I replaced the inverter and all seemed to work well for a week or more. Then the same result as above.

Second Attempt: I replaced the CCFL and it worked for about fifteen minutes, then same as above again.

Third Attempt: I replaced both the CCFL and the inverter at the same time. It worked for about ten minutes and then began a rapid on and off flashing of the screen about three- or four times a second, increasing gradually to about eight times a second. The rapid flashing lasted about a minute and then it went off completely.

I turned it off and back on and the screen worked fine for about three minutes. Then it repeats the same flashing process again.

I can see a faint image on the screen in all the above scenarios and when it is connected to an external monitor, it works fine.

All parts replacements were bought from ebay "Top Rated" sellers and all parts were advertised as new, and looked new. The CCFLs both came with pre-attached wiring harness. Parts all came from different dealers each time.

What could be causing this?

So, i got a Toshiba Satellite P850 one month ago and since 5-6 days i got a problem with my sound :/

After about 15 min, my sound stop working but if i pout my headphones, i got sound.
If i put my computer in sleep mod ( 2-3 hours) my sound back for 15 min.

I really don't know what to do

Hope you guys help me :)

Ty very much

Answer:Satellite P850 - No sound after 15 min

Really strange issue.
Did you try to uninstall / and / install the sound driver again?
Please do it.

The sound driver can be downloaded from Toshiba European driver page.
Before installing the new driver, remove the preinstalled sound driver and reboot the notebook. After that install the new downloaded sound driver.
Reboot the unit and test it.

I've recently bought a Satellite P850-12X laptop and have had problems since day one.
The hard drive sounds loose, the LAN adaptor is flaky and the system is prone to random freezing

I tried reinstalling windows and then all the drivers just in case it was software but to no avail.
Obtaining all the relevant drivers in one easy bundle was also a nightmare.

They're all available, but individually rather than as a single bundle for the product.
Perhaps I was looking in the wrong place but you'd think it would be easier.
Also done a full factory reset but no joy. Seems to be hardware related.

I've had Toshibas before and think they're great but this item just feels unstable - probably just the individual product I have rather than the whole series but as per the subject I'm not impressed at all.

Maybe I should have stuck to the reliable TECRA series which you could probably throw down the stairs and they'd still work.

Off to get a replacement/refund but may think twice about Toshiba in the future.

Answer:Satellite P850-12X - not very impressed

The driver can be downloaded from Toshiba page as a single package.
For me its not a big problem and I favor this method because I can exactly choose the driver which I need.
Even if someone would need all available drivers, it?s not really a pain to download the drivers one by one.

Regarding the HDD sound:
Well, I?ve got two notebooks: one from Toshiba and the other from another manufacturer.
The Toshiba notebook is equipped with an 250GB HDD and this HDD is really quite.
The other notebook supports 500GB HDD and this HDD is much louder?
I think this does not depends on notebook but the HDD which is built in?

However, I?m going to replace both HDDs with an SSD drive? at this time the SSD are much cheaper and I guess I will notice much better performance using the SSD drive

Hi there,

Currently my PC is the Satellite P850-31X, see specs here

It currently has a GeForce GT 640m. I was wondering if i could install a new GPU into the system. This results in the problems

1) It cannot be significantly larger in physical size
2) it cannot have a bigger current input than the one i am using currently.

Thanks in advance.

I would like to upgrade the card to a Geforce GTX 7xxm - GeForce GTX 8xxm if possible, as i've found problems converting into an AMD system.

Answer:Re: GPU upgrade for Satellite P850-31X

Such upgrade on mobile machines is not possible. Hardware upgrade on mobile systems is very limited and there are many reasons for that. Due to specific design big problem is hardware cooling system.

Dear forum,

My P850-133 has been sitting on the shelf for a while, I tried to boot it a few weeks ago and the only thing that happens is that the power button illuminates white, and the white light at the bottom of the laptop lights up for five seconds. There is no fan spin and nothing on the screen.

I have tried removing the RAM modules one by one, removing the hard drive, I tried the trick where you disconnect everything and hold the power button for 30 secs. I borrowed a charger from a store and I tried booting without the battery.

What could be the problem? The laptop is from 2012 and likely out of warranty.

Thankful for help.

Does the SATELLITE P850-132 support additional SSD drive. Close to RAM is some space and connector. Does anyone know what is for? Is it mSATA port that can be use for SSD?

Or it is just opportunity to replace DVD to the disc space with SATA?

Answer:Satellite P850-132 and additional SSD

The bay near the memory modules and the miniPCI Wlan card is designed for the miniPCI TV/3G Card module.

The point is that different P850 models were released supporting different hardware specifications.

Even if this port looks similar to mSATA port, it cannot be used to connect an additional mSATA SSD drive.

Last time I used my laptop, I shut it down, and ever since then It will not turn on.

When I plug charger in the charging light comes on, but doesn't power up with or without battery pack in the laptop.

When I try to turn on the laptop a white LED light will come on for about 10 seconds then goes off where the power symbol is indicated on the laptop.
Happens every time.

No light appears when the charger is not plugged into the laptop, literally nothing occurs when there Is no charger plugged in.

Answer:Satellite P850-138 won't start up

It looks like a serious hardware malfunction…

I think its worth to check the notebook for a RAM malfunction… I recommend using one good working module.
In case the unit would not power up even using good working module, other parts like motherboard could be affected.

I purchased a Toshiba Satellite P850-30Q a week ago, and overall I like the machine, good performance, nice design, great speakers.... BUT::::

The FAN NOISE driving me crazy? I have had many different laptops in my life, but never experienced anything like this. Normally I dont notice the fan, but this laptop I only notice the fan.

At Idle I can hear the HDD - I can live with that.
At light use, office and internet surfing and like, the fan will turn on now and then at 53% and its really noisy! - Its disturbing when I try to study?
When I play games the fan is at 53% constantly and after like 5-15 min it will increase to +80% which is really loud?! - I can live with the fan when I play games, but not when I study or use it for light use in the train or school.

Am I the only one experiencing this?

If there are no resolution I will return the produkt to the store.. Its just sad when I like the rest, and despite the fan Im happy about it.

Hope you can help.

Answer:Fan noise on Satellite P850-30Q

I have the Toshiba Satellite P850-30W....
I notice the fan too, not because its loud, but because of the fact that it turns on and off all the time...its really annoying when browsing websites and doing light work...
I prefer a fan thats on all the time on a low volume, compared to switching completely off and turning on every 10 seconds....I hope this can be improved with a bios update..
if more people report this to Toshiba, there is a bigger chance of them bothering to fix it
im using bios version 1.90

I have recently bought a new laptop Satellite P850-32Z (Windows 8) brand new only got it yesterday and now I have problem trying to boot up the laptop.

When I switch on the laptop, I get the Toshiba leading innovation screen then a message saying "preparing automatic repair", then "diagnosing your PC" followed by "attempting repairs".
Any idea how to solve this?

Answer:New Satellite P850 would not boot up

Every new notebook is offered with preinstalled OS that must be prepared for first start. Just follow the instructions on the screen and I hope first start will be prepared properly.

To be honest I don?t know why this repair message is shown on the screen but just leave it working till the end and post what will happen when this repair procedure will be finished.

I just hope you have made first start with AC power supply and without some interrupts.

Hello everyone,

my laptop is 1 month out of warranty and Windows keeps telling me my HDD is about to fail and I'm unsure on what HDD I need to buy to replace it, I'm not in the best financial situation at the moment and am looking for the most cost effective way of backing up my computer and installing a new HDD.

I've looked into buying a 2.5" HDD enclosure and was going to make a clone of the original HDD but if anyone that knows a better way if they could let me know. I have a 2tb external HDD I could use to back everything up but I'm not sure how to do it and the cloning machine just seamed the easiest as after its cloned the new HDD I just replace it in the laptop, I've found a cloning enclosure that comes with the leads and software for about $50 and a 1tb Hitachi HDD for $80 but I don't know which HDD fits my laptop.

Any help is much appreciated as I'm a little upset my $1400 laptop has such a serious problem 1 month out of warranty, cheers Jon.

Answer:Satellite P850 - 1TB HDD replacement

> I've looked into buying a 2.5" HDD enclosure and was going to make a clone of the original HDD but if anyone that knows a better way if they could let me know

This was looks good to me.
In the past I switched from HDD to SSD drive and I have also clone the HDD partitions and moved to SSD drive.
After that you will need to mark the system partition as active (on the external HDD)

Regarding the 1TB HDD:
I think the HDD should be supported because the SATA controller isn?t limited to a particular size. Therefore it should not be a big deal to get it running.

I recently purchased a Toshiba p850/049 laptop and reformatted it for windows 7 64x (from windows 8). After installing all of the Toshiba software etc everything was working fine although just recently I have noticed that the special function keys have stopped working. They definitely worked after I reformatted the computer because I remember being initially annoyed that every time I went to refresh a webpage (f5) it would switch of the trackpad as I was unfamiliar with the new configuration.

I thought the issue may be due to the 'Logitech setpoint' software I installed but I have since uninstalled that and the problems remains. I then tried uninstalling then reinstalling the value added package and the HW setup software and then checking all of the flash card/keyboard settings.

I then tried checking the BIOS setting with no luck. No matter what configuration I have it set to the special keys do not work. When I have it set to "special function keys" and press any of the function buttons, the keyboard lights up but nothing happens, in this mode if I press fn+function keys they work in their normal fashion ie spell check or refresh or full screen etc. When I have it set to "normal f1-12 function keys" the same applies in that f5 refreshes successfully but fn+f5 does nothing. I have tried playing around with the settings in accessibility and HW set up and flash cards and in BIOS with no effect (It seems that changing the setting in HW set up and bios ... Read more

Generally speaking you can do with your notebook what you want but it is strongly recommended usage of notebook manufacturer drivers only. Toshiba drivers are modified and offer some kind of ?protection?. With other words, graphic card will not forced to run on maximum level.
This will avoid overheating or hardware damage.

Stay with Toshiba drivers only.

I own a Toshiba Satellite laptop model: P850 part number: PSPKFV-00H002AR bought from United Arab Emirates.

In the beginning the laptop felt great, utilities worked as they should. the only thing that was failing from time to time was the ECO button but not a big deal. *Toshiba HDD accelerator was working flawlessly.*

I used a *free* 3rd party software called:

Before doing any of the operations I did a deep research of how windows 8 partitions and recovery work so that I don't accidentally render them useless.

Can anybody help me?
I've just upgraded to Windows 8 on my Satellite P850 and now, depending on what I'm trying to do, it sometimes says there's no Internet connection.

I've definitely got a strong connection because it works fine in the new Internet Explorer app, Norton 360 and Windows itself. But it won't work in other things on the desktop, such as iTunes, the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant, the Internet Explorer on the desktop, Safari etc.

Why is this? Obviously the most important thing is the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant, but that doesn't get very far because it needs an Internet connection.

Please help ASAP. If you need additional information, let me know.

Answer:Satellite P850 - No internet connection using Win 8

Does this happen using LAN or WLan?
If you have internet problems using WLan, I recommend checking LAN connection.

Furthermore you should ensure that your installed software and other tools don?t affect the Win 8? in some cases there could be a problem with preinstalled software which is not compatible with Win 8.

I see also that you?ve got Norton installed? check if installed security tools don?t affect internet connection!

However, if i play a game in which my laptop i fully capable of doing, the light flashes again, meaning i can't play as my laptop will die.

My advice for you: if everything works well and you don?t have some serious problems disable Tempro.

The product key at the bottom of the unit would not work!
The preinstalled Windows 8 would be activated automatically while booting and configuring the system for the first time!

Did you format the whole HDD? Did you remove the Windows 8 from the HDD?
Did you create an recovery disk or recovery flash memory stick in the past?

In such case there is only one option to get factory settings.
You will need to order the Toshiba recovery disk:

Can anyone explain to me how to remove the keyboard please, i have removed all but 3 screws on the underside of the laptop as the 3 remaining screws don?t seem to want to come out!? I can tighten them but unscrewing them seems to be the problem... are they screws that undo but don?t come out like the back plate covering?

I have removed all the hardware such as HDD, RAM, wireless card and ODD.

I need to get to the FAN as that needs replacing.

Answer:How to disassemble Satellite P850-321 notebook?

Hello Alan

Please don't understand me wrong but I just want to say that such action will cancel valid warranty so you should not do anything on your own. If warranty is still valid you should contact nearest authorized service provider and ask for help.

Anyway, to remove keyboard on this notebook model is not so easy. At first you must remove optical disc drive. After doing this you must use some smooth stick (a pick) and put it between the keyboard and the upper than slide to release the first snap. The first snap is placed near the Windows button. Then you must gently pick up the keyboard by prying up the plastic sheet from the ODD bay (Caps lock button). Next step is to release all other keyboard snap at the bottom side of the keyboard.
Please be gently and don't use force. All you do is on *your own risk* and I really hope you will not damage something.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me, please?

For the past week or so, I have been trying to upgrade my laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Despite registering for the upgrade, I have yet to receive a notification. Upon checking Windows Update, I have seen it has actually been trying numerous times to download and install the upgrade automatically but has failed. I checked the relevant Windows forum and found countless people had also had this problem and error code, suggesting various solutions. Despite having tried all these solutions repeatedly, I have still not had any success.

In the last few days, I have found out through the Windows 10 Upgrade Tool on the taskbar that (despite having previously been clear!) it was now saying two things to do with my laptop's Bluetooth functions would not be compatible with Windows 10. Is this why the upgrade's not working? I have done what I can to uninstall and deactivate the Bluetooth features as I have never used them. However, I have now seen on the Toshiba website here that my laptop is not listed in the (massive!) list of compatible devices! Surely there must be some way to make it compatible? I've only had the laptop for three years and never had any problems with upgrading it from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and then 8.1.

Anyway, I'm going to keep doing everything I can to get it to work. If anyone else can suggest something to help, I'd appreciate it. I really can't afford to buy a whole new laptop just simply t... Read more

Hi and thanks in advance :)

Had this problem since purchase but it is much worse now. Every couple of minutes I experience a sudden spike in fps. This happens more frequently in games, but still happens in low performance tasks such as YouTube videos but at a lower rate. It handles tasks very well except for this sudden drops in performance.
This problem has gotten worse over the time I have owned the laptop (just under a year) and is very infuriating. I keep all drivers and utilities up to date.

any ideas?

Thanks again

Hi there,
I have a Satellite P850 laptop which is under guarantee. I have two problems, one with the laptop, the other with Toshiba (or maybe me)

1. the screen on the laptop has developed a red line across the middle. It is always there although is more noticeable against some backgrounds than others.
It doesn't seem to appear on my TV when I use the HDMI connexion but it is still on the laptop screen image.
It doesn't matter what software I'm running and is there even on the initial screen, the one with the flying saucer on a stick? I don't know what to do about it. Any suggestions please?

2. I seem unable to contact Toshiba support to either email or phone them with this query. Therefore I don't know how to get help under my Pick up and Return Standard 1 year Warranty.

Can any one help please. Best wishes ... John N

Answer:Satellite P850 - Red Line on the screen

> It doesn't seem to appear on my TV when I use the HDMI connexion but it is still on the laptop screen image.
This would mean that graphic card isn?t the problem here?
Looks like internal display issue.

If the warranty is valid, the notebook should be fixed free of charge.
You should get in contact with the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country.
Here you could find all ASPs available worldwide:

The laptop Satellite P850-00E PSPKFC-00e004 powers off without warning as if the power plug and battery was removed at the same time.

This happened from new - after a couple of weeks of use, on cold boots before it reaches the post screens or after a few minutes.

It was sent to the depot shortly after purchase and returned with a note that the problem could not be reproduced.
When I received the laptop back - the problem started again and has progressed to the point that it happens after less than 2 minutes.

I contacted the depot who again said that it was left on for days without a problem so I contacted Toshiba customer service to directed me back to the depot.

If this is a known issue, can it be repaired?

I put this system aside since I travel a lot for business and the frustration was not needed. After returning this time, my sons laptop has died an I would like to see if this one can be fixed.

Please help.

My laptop was working fine last night, no new software installed or anything. This morning, when attempting to boot my laptop, I came across multiple blue screens for NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM & FAT_FILE_SYSTEM stuck in an infinite loop. As I could not do anything, I force shut down the laptop. When I turned it back on, it powers on but will not boot.

The first time I powered it back on, the fans were working in overdrive. I let this run for maybe 20 minutes before force shutting down again as nothing was happening.
Ever since then, powering the laptop back on works but nothing will boot. The fans are on but are not working excessively and the third light on the side does not turn on (I believe this is the hard drive light but I am unsure). I have tried fixes from the Microsoft forums such as holding the power button for 1 minute with all power sources and battery disconnected before plugging into power again, that did not work. I also cannot boot from a CD/DVD as the laptop will not let me eject the disk drive. It seems to be permanently stuck in the state between pressing the 'on' button and the appearance of the Toshiba loading screen.

I am a university student who desperately needs this laptop back ASAP, and I cannot afford expensive repairs! Please help

Answer:Satellite P850 powers on but will not boot

Sounds like the HDD may be faulty.

If you remove the HDD and connect it to another PC using a USB caddy, can you access the data?

Hi, I'm new in the forum.

I bouth a Satellite P850 last year and I'm planning to replace the cd driver by a SSD. However I wonder if the conector of the CD driver is a SATA 3 or a SATA 2 in order to maximize the writing and reading speed of the SSD.

As far as I know the chipset (intel hm76) has two SATA 3 ports. I guess one is used in the main HDD... but not totally sure as the HDD is a SATA 2.

Is there a way to know if the CD driver uses one of the two SATA 3 ports?

Answer:Where are the SATA 3 conectors in Satellite P850-12Z?

Generally speaking Toshiba doesn't support such upgrade and it is not possible to find some official statement where you can find info about 100% compatible HDD/SSD caddy.
On this forum you can find many threads where people describe own experiences with such upgrade.
Use advanced search option and check if you can find some useful info or tip that can help you.

I have a Satellite P850-12Z bought a few months ago (3 or 4).

I have noticed that if the battery is charged 100% and I switch off the computer for a couple of days, when I switch it back on the battery is nearly gone or completely gone if it takes me a while longer to restart it.

It seems quite strange to me because I have not seen something similar in any other computer I have had.

Can somebody tell me if this is normal or what could be the problem?

Thank you.

Answer:Battery discharging even if Satellite P850-12Z is OFF

This is OK and nothing unusual if some BIOS options are not disabled.
I assume the notebook supports the features like ?Wake Up on Lan? and ?USB Sleep & Charge?.
Both features requires power even if the unit is OFF.
So disable both (in BIOS) and check if it helps to avoid the battery discharging.

I bought my Satellite P850-138 from PC world and was told that it had a dedicated graphics card

but when i run dxdiag, it says that my graphics card is Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000

can anyone offer any incite?

Answer:What graphics card do I have in Satellite P850-138

I've not searched for your model spec but from what you have said it sounds like you have Intel onboard graphics and an Nvidia (guessing) graphics card - Control panel should show them both in Device Manager. If so this video may help your understanding [] .

(If you go to Nvidia web site then there is an option to detect your video card and install the latest drivers)

Hello guys

Which program is the best for making a new partition without lost my existing?

And if I make this new partition, after recovery it will be existing or not ?and I mean my files in this partition?

Answer:How to make new partition on Satellite P850?

When you buy new notebook it is preinstalled with recovery image and has ?factory settings?. So long you have original ?factory settings? you will be able to install OS using HDD recovery installation.

Please before you do and change anything create recovery DVD (recovery discs) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator tool. It can happen that after changing HDD partitions structure recovery installation will not be possible anymore.
> And if I make this new partition, after recovery it will be existing or not ?and I mean my files in this partition?
After recovery you will have absolutely the same partitions structure as you have it now. So be careful with this and before you install recovery image back-up al your data to some external device.

Best program? Best program for me was ?Partition Magic?.

Recently, I have been having issues with the battery, which means I have to plug in my AC adaptor in all the time. The battery icon on the taskbar shows that the battery is 68% and has been for the past few days. Hovering over icon says "plugged in, not charging", and the battery light on the laptop does not light up. If I unplug the AC adaptor, the laptop shuts down completely.

I have also tried the cold reset as per below instructions (from the "Solve a problem" section in support)
1. Switch off your laptop and unplug the AC adapter
2. Remove the battery from PC (for models with fixed battery please follow this instruction)
3. Then press on the power button for 30 sec.
4. Next, plug in the AC adapter, without the battery, switch on your computer and start Windows normally
5. Wait for 5 min. and then put the battery back on while your laptop is switched on

In step 4, when I switched on the laptop, the laptop starts and the battery light is on. But then after a few seconds, the battery light turns off and the laptop switches off.

Has anyone had this issue?

Hi :)

so I was recently an idiot and accidentally dropped my laptop on it's side with the headphones in. Now the jack is damaged (pressed into the computer) and there is no sound from speakers or headphones anymore.

I need to know; is the sound card attached to the motherboard? Would this be an easy/expensive fix?
Also would a usb sound card work at all for a quick fix solution?
thanks in advance for any advice :)

Hi, I recently adquired a Toshiba Satellite P850-12Z.
I am happy with it, is fast and solid like my previous Toshiba laptops.
But, I suspect that the thermal paste is not well applied in the CPU.
When doing a stress test, the temp raises from 60?C to 93-95?C in just 2 seconds.
Then it suddenly drops to 75?C, and it rises again to 95, and so on,, all this happens 3 times in 2-3 seconds.
It seems that its the on-chip thermal protection and its threshold.

I know that the cooling in a laptop usually get 80?C or more, but its gradually and not instantaneous, lets say in 15 secs at full load to reach that temperature.
The GPU goes well, it idles at 50?C and reaches 67?C after a minute.

This situation makes me believe that I'm not experiencing the full power of my core i7 3610qm, as the turbo boost won't work due that fast rising temps, and also it seems to be idling when reaching that temperatures.

What should I do? I suppose that cleaning and applying artic silver paste on the CPU will void my warranty, or not?

Answer:Satellite P850 - Temperature raising very fast

To be honest I?m fan of Toshiba P series and now I have third Satellite P notebook. It is P500 and I?m so happy with it but it will be nice to have newest Satellite P, something like P875.

Back to your issue. Of course on this virtual way it is not easy to say if described issue is related to silver paste on CPU and this should be clarified with authorized Toshiba service provider in your country.
> What should I do?
I recommend you to contact nearest ASP and ask for help or opinion.
> I suppose that cleaning and applying artic silver paste on the CPU will void my warranty, or not?
Definitely. You are not authorized to disassemble notebook and such step will void valid warranty.

Don?t make anything on your own. Call service and ask for help.

Someone know how to fix that? Is really annoying have internet cuts every 30 minutes.

I asked Toshiba and all they said is that my pc was made with windows 7,that if i installed windows 8 is my problem.

Thanks to Toshiba Spain for his big support....

Answer:Satellite P850 windows 8 several cuts of internet

I think this person was not really schooled.

I think your notebook can be found in WINDOWS 8 UPGRADE - SUPPORTED MODELS matrix

This would mean that the Win 8 is clearly supported on this unit.

You said that internet connection cuts every 30 minutes.
What connection do you mean exactly? LAN or WLan?

I've recently purchased a:

Satellite P850-31L
Part Number : PSPKFE-00P007EN

and I am quite happy with the laptop on the whole. However I'm having problems running Crysis 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 on the device.

In both cases they frequently crash to the desktop and are followed by an application event log such as:

Faulting application name: crysis3.exe, version:, time stamp: 0x02f47040
Faulting module name: d3d11.dll, version: 6.2.9200.16420, time stamp: 0x505a95af
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00068dd7

Its pretty easy to see that the problem is related to DirectX 11 on the nVidia card.

I have a lower specification HP laptop with a 230M series nVidia GeForce that runs Assassin's Creed 3 without problem (although it won't run Crysis 3 due to lack of Dx11 support).

I have attempted to update the display drivers to the current nVidia offical ones on the Satellite, but am prevented from doing so due to the soft locking used in the Toshiba hardware.

I'm currently using the December drivers from the Toshiba website.

This is not a gaming issue, this is a driver issue. The games referenced are just as good as testing tools. Please do not move this post, it obfuscates the issue. Either Tosh needs to release the driver lock or update them.

Thanks in advance,

I have a Satellite P850 with i7cpu and 16gb ram running win 7 home premium.

The wifi card seemed to give up and as it was a realtek, with no support from their site, not even drivers. I decided to swap it out and installed an Intel centrino advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 dual band mini wifi card I have finally got all the drivers installed but the intel diagnostic keeps asking to turn the mechanical switch for the wifi. I have tried the F12 and FN keys but nothing happens.

Any Ideas as to how to get this switched on???

Answer:Satellite P850 - new WIFI card cannot be switched ON

You're very proud of that card evident in giving us the entire model number compared to the Realtek whatever that you dismissed.

Whether Toshiba supports your particular card is a quest for you to determine and I'll get you started by focusing your efforts to the csd toshiba site hosting drivers for Intel WiMax devices:

I hope you haven't thrown your RealTek away, you will eventually realize a new set of problems and incompatibilities using your Intel Card while RealTek devices whether they're Atheros or RaLink chipsets are superior, flexible and accommodating of manual power adjustment for increased performance.

Intel's are incapable of such things and overly constrictive and incapable of effective control, just like the mysterious conflict you're having at this very moment.

The RealTek drivers are already included inside Windows, so are most Intel WiFi cards and these downloads are another layer of issues your forcing upon yourself.

Does anyone know why Windows 8 won't restart properly on the Satellite P850 laptop?

It seems like everytime I have to restart, especially after installing an update, it just hangs on the "Restarting" screen and I usually end up having to hold the power button down to completely shut it down and then power back up again. Sometimes I even have to do that to get it to shut down.

I think you tried to install an wrong Wlan driver.
As far as I know the Satellite P850-133 supports the new WLan chip which is Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 b/g/n known as Jackson Peak1

Check this WLan portal page:
and try to install the driver for Intel WiMax/ WiFi Link/ Wireless Adapters

Furthermore on the Toshiba European driver page you can find the Intel PROSet/Wireless Software v 7.1.64 and v v15.
I assume you need to install this too.

Hi I bought a P850-3iL today and it continually hangs and is generally slow with lots of hard drive activity

firefox lock up all the time as well as other apps, i have started downloading windows 8 updates since it didnt do it automaticaly but is there any other advice anyone could give me?

thx Simon

Answer:Satellite P850-31lL continually hangs

Every new notebook is preinstalled with many additional tools and utilities that are active in the background. Windows update is set to automatically and when you connect brand new notebook to the internet all missing updates will be installed running in the background. It is the reason for intensive HDD activity.

To change all this I recommend you to change Windows updates settings. Choose option ?Check for updates but let me choose where to download and install them? so you can start update installation when you are finished with your work.

I also recommend you to disable some applications in start-up settings. Disable Tempro and service station. Both tools are very nice but you can live without them. By the way, you can start them manually anytime you want.

From my experience preinstalled McAffe is also pretty active and slow down notebooks performance. It is trial version so maybe you should remove it from the system and install free version of Avira antivir. This application doesn?t use so much resources and works ?quiet? in the background.

Generally speaking OS configuration is very important and can make notebook performance much better.
Hanging notebook? I cannot say anything about that. What happen exactly?

I can't seem to find a way of fixing this or the cause of the problem.

Here it is:

I haven't had the laptop for that long and already thinking it is a terrible thing. When I start my laptop there is like a 70% chance of the keyboard not starting (this is up until it gets to the windows login) then around a 15% chance the touch pad wont start. If the touchpad wont start then I just shut down the whole laptop and start again but there is a chance with the laptop that if I use the on screen keyboard to login then the keyboard will start working again. (around 80% chance) I am getting sick of it.

I probably should have written this in code.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Note: I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and rollback the drivers, even searching for the most current.
