Satellite U940 - Battery Life decrease with Windows 8.1 update

Question: Satellite U940 - Battery Life decrease with Windows 8.1 update

Hi, prior to upgrading to windows 8.1 i would usually get about 4 to 5 hours of battery usage. However after updating to windows 8.1 this has significantly reduced to about 1.5 to 2 hours doing the exact same things with nothing changing . I have contacted toshiba who provided me with a replacement battery however this issue still persists. I have followed to the letter on how to update 8.1 following all instructions.

I am not really good with computers but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite U940 - Battery Life decrease with Windows 8.1 update

Huh it is not easy to say what is wrong there. In front of me I have U940-103 with Win8.1.
Three weeks ago I?ve updated original preinstalled Win8 with Win8.1 and after battery test I didn?t notice any difference.
With full battery I can watch two movies without problems so with full battery I can use my Satellite U940 up to 4 hours.

It is not easy to say if the reason for lower battery capacity Win8.1 is.
I don't know if you want to do this but it will be interesting to know if something will change if you install original recovery image again.

Has anyone else experienced a decrease in battery life after installing the creator update, and if so, are there any fixes?
(The decrease in battery life is accompanied by the fan running really fast and a high amount of memory and CPU being used).

I have had my Dell Inspiron 7000 gaming since march now, and I've loved it so far. I use it both for gaming and for school, which is why I chose it, since it has such a long battery life. But i had to roll back my intel driver a couple of days ago, since the last update gave some screen trouble when returning from sleep mode. But the battery life of my pc has decreased dramaticly since the roll back. It's decreased from cirka 9-11 hours on 100% to cirka 1-3 hours on 100%. The battery life even runs out in about 2 hours when I only use Word and Spotify.Does my driver really have such a big impact on the battery life or, if not, what can I do to bring back the long battery span which is the reason I bought this pc for?

So I just clean installed Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on my new toshiba nb305 (which has a N450 processor that supports 64-bit). I noticed that the battery life has been cut almost in half. When I first turned on with W7 starter the battery life was around 10 hours but now its around 6 hours. Should I expect it to be so low? Or should I switch to W7 ultimate 32-bit. I did notice the computer is slightly faster (though I did put 2GB in as well). Thanks,

Answer:W7 X64 on Netbook decrease battery life?

Read THIS article by Laptop Magazine. Quoted:The biggest surprise was the loss of battery life. When we ran our standard battery test on the Toshiba NB205 under Windows 7, it lost more than 3 hours. Under XP it got an amazing 9 hours and 24 minutes, but with Windows 7 it only lasted for 6 hours and 15 minutes. Installing new Win 7 drivers from Toshiba only resulted in an extra half hour or so (6:53). We also noticed a bit of a drop-off with another netbook we tested: the MSI U123. This time it was less dramatic: 8:14 in XP vs. 7:41 in Win 7Changing to Windows 7 32-bit will not produce any difference per se. It is Windows 7 itself.i_Xp/Vista/W7User

A couple months ago, I called Lenovo because my laptop would hibernate at around 40% due to low battery charge. They suggested that I update the BIOS, check to see if the battery (model 92P1141) was recalled, and perform the battery gauge reset in the Lenovo Power Manager software. It turns out my battery was not recalled, and that the BIOS update didn't help, so I ran the battery gauge reset. Afterwards, the computer still proceeded to hibernate at around 40% charge (Vista's power settings are set to do so at 4%), but the computer ran about 40% less time on battery (about an hour), and the full charge and remaining capacities dropped about 30%. The few times that I used my laptop on battery following that, the battery life continued to decrease and the laptop continued to hibernate earlier and earlier. Yesterday, the battery lasted all of 10 minutes, although it still took a few hours to recharge. Is this typical for Lenovo batteries? I usually keep the computer plugged in and the battery fully charged, which I realize isn't great for the battery, but I expected better after only 89 cycles and under 2 years of use. So I suppose my question is whether anyone else has seen this rapid a drop in battery capacity, and whether the Power Manager software actually further damaged the battery. Or am I just another cheapskate desperate to find a way out of spending $160 on a replacement battery?

Answer:Rapid Battery Life Decrease

I've had my T60p (9c battery) for about 2 years, and leave it plugged in most of the time as you do. I can still run about 4.5 hours on battery, though. Altogether, I think your battery is just messed up (to use technical terms). I also selected the "optimize for battery life span" option under "battery maintenence", as that prevents the battery from full charging some of the time. You might be spending $160 on this one.

I just want to know whether plugging in the laptop even after it is fully charged decrease the life of battery. And what is recommended while using laptop when there is availability of external power supply. And is there any battery maintenance criteria available for using laptops in such situations?

Answer:Does Plugging in the Laptop for home use decrease the life of the battery?

AFAIK, all today's notebook battery chargers prevent the battery overcharge, so you don't have to worry about it. In general, li-ion battery life depends on several factors: temperature (lower temperature - longer life), charge percent (I've read in many sources that the optimal value is ~45-50%), cycle count (max capacity decreases with each cycle). Also, there's a lot of information on this topic in the internet, if you want to know more.

Hi,

I have a month old Satellite U945-S4390 and I have started experiencing this problem after upgrading to Windows 8.1 a few days ago.

I've reverted back to windows 8 and the fan has returned to being quiet.
When I re-installed windows 8.1the fan has once again started being loud.

I'm convinced this is a Windows 8.1 issue (at least for me).

Anyone else experiencing this issue? Any suggested solution?

Answer:Satellite U940 - loud cooling fan after Windows 8.1 update

>I've reverted back to windows 8 and the fan has returned to being quiet.
>When I re-installed windows 8.1the fan has once again started being loud.

After Win 8.1 update you should install all the drivers and Toshiba Utilities like Toshiba system driver in the right order.
The Toshiba driver page provides the installation instruction for all Win 8.1supported models.
The installation of such drivers is very important regarding the good notebook functionality

Probably…

Do I have to buy a new battery?

If it’s battery malfunction, then the battery must be replaced.
But if your warranty is valid I would recommend you to ask an ASP in your country of assistance… maybe it could be replaced under warranty conditions…

Hi

I have a Satellite U940 on Windows 8.1.

My question is whether there is any relationship between battery wear and the health of the laptop on toshiba's PC health monitor.

At the moment my battery wear is at 50% of full capcacity according to BatteryBar
however on the health monitor it says that my battery health is good (full green).

I can only get about 1.5 to 2 hours of life out of my laptop and am just asking for help and information on whether I should buy a new battery or is there something wrong with my battery readings.

Thanks for reading this.

Answer:PC Health Monitor and Battery wear on Satellite U940

> At the moment my battery wear is at 50% of full capcacity according to BatteryBar
however on the health monitor it says that my battery health is good (full green).

The battery health shows you the battery health status and not the battery charging status.

> I can only get about 1.5 to 2 hours of life out of my laptop
The battery working time depends on notebook usage. What does this mean?
Well, running heavy performance software (games, video editing software, etc?), using bright display brightness or playing DVD movie would discharge the battery quickly.

1.5 - 2h of battery working time is not bad. But of course; sooner or later every battery needs to be replaced. It?s just a matter of time.

Answer:Satellite U940 - after update to Win8.1 FN key stop working

I have Satellite U940-103 and I?ve done Win8.1 successfully. Everything works perfectly.
My only solution is: Win8.1 update must be done following Toshiba Win8.1 update instructions http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/ and installation instructions document that can be downloaded from Toshiba support and download page.

Have you installed all available Toshiba specific tools and utilities?

I just upgraded my Satellite U940 PSU6VA-00S002 from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and am currently following the upgrade instructions from here . I notice that both the European and Australian Toshiba websites include a "Realtek Wireless LAN Driver" in their list of driver downloads for Windows 8.1 for the Satellite U940:
- European page
- [http://support.toshiba-tie.co.jp/windows81/drivers/PSU6V_Up_au.htm]

However, I have never noticed a Realtek wireless LAN driver on my computer, even before I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have only ever seen the following Network Adapters in Device Manager:
- Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2200
- Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller (which I believe is a wired LAN driver, not a wireless LAN driver).

So, my question is: should I download the Realtek wireless LAN driver, or is it not appropriate for my system?

Answer:Satellite U940 - Realtek Wireless LAN Driver update

As far as I know first instructions are for EU models so in my opinion you should use drivers and instructions from http://support.toshiba-tie.co.jp/windows81/drivers/PSU6V_Up_au.htm
At the bottom is list what should be uninstalled with exact explanation. If your notebook has Intel WLAN card I think you must not install Realtek card. After Win8.1 check WLAN card status in device manager. Is WLAN card installed properly (Win8.1 inbox version)?

I have updated my nokia lumia 625 to the latest version of windows. I have now a battery life of only a few hours when I used to charge my phone only every 3 days. I still use my phone the same way and I was wondering what could cause that change... Any help welcome

Answer:post windows update battery life

Updates sometimes trigger battery life issues. Sometimes they can be fixed by something as simple as a reboot or a soft reset (power off + volume down until the phone restarts). Sometimes it takes something more drastic, like a hard reset. If you haven't tried the simple fixes, do those first.

Hello, I apologizie for my English, I know it's not the best...

I did a very stupit error, and now I can not use my new Satellite U940 -103.
I updated the BIOS, from version 1.2 to version 1.3.

Unfortunately I did not do any recovery support (I'm stupid, yes!).
When I turn on the ultrabook, it say:
"Your PC need to be repaired"
error 0x0000001
Does anybody know what I can do, please?
Thx

Answer:Satellite U940 starts with error message after BIOS update

Hmm? do you see a Toshiba Splash screen while booting?
Are you abele to access the BIOS?

If not, I guess something went wrong during the update and you will need to ask service in your country for fix.

Hello

I just purchased a Satellite L775-15q and I want to know the best plan to charge my battery, so it can last as long as possible.
Should I leave the laptop always connected on the charger power cord, no matter if it has full battery or not? Should I always let the battery drop to 10% and then charge it up to 100% and then remove the cord? Or should I do that from time to time and not every day?

Thanks!

Hi,

I think the best that you can do is discharge the battery two-three times a month not everyday.

I have a Satellite U940. I have had it for more than 3 years and I like it.
Last weekend I went for the free upgrade to WIndows 10 and upgraded to it from my Windows 8.1.

It works, but now I found out (perhaps I should have read it) that the Satellite U940 is NOT a supported device for Windows 10.

Why is this?

I'm considering reverting back to 8.1, but for now the Windows 10 is working for me.

What will this mean for me long term and what do people suggest?

Many thanks!

Answer:Windows 10 not supported for Satellite U940

As you probably know it is not possible to offer full support for all notebook models. On some point Toshiba and other manufacturers must make a cut and make decision which older models will not be supported anymore.

Hello,

Just upgraded the Windows 8.1. installation to Windows 10 on my U940-100 laptop with 32GB SSD for caching.
The laptop really performed very well (fast boot etc.) until this upgrade.
It seems that the caching on the SSD doesn't work anymore.
Somebody familair with this problem? I can't find any useful information on the Toshiba site.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite U940 really slow after upgrading to Windows 10

Hello,

I had the same issue of yours on my 940-11K,

I solved it very easily just by installing the drivers for Intel Rapid Start Technology and Intel Rapid Storage drivers.

You can download the latest version from the Intel website, here's the link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...art-Technology
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/it/...-Rapid-Storage

I upgraded to Windows 10, then I installed the drivers.
After each driver installation I made a reboot.
The SSD caching should be automatically working again after these 2 steps.

You should notice an overall performance improvement right after.

Hope this will help!

Hi.

I own a Toshiba Satellite U940-12C. Due to a sequence of dreadful circumstances, i ended up with a notebook without Windows 8 and no access to the recovery partition. If there's any clue to how to access this recovery data, please tell me.

But the question is: how can i get the license code of my notebook copy of Windows 8?? Is there any way??

Thanks and bye.

Answer:Satellite U940-12C: Windows 8 license code??

If you cannot access recovery partition on regular way there is no other way to do this and recovery image saved on your notebook is useless. it is pity that you don?t have created recovery media that could be used for clean Win8 installation.

Maybe you will not believe this but license key is also useless and cannot be used for own Windows installation. This code belongs to original preinstalled version that you got with your notebook.

Best option for you is to order original recovery disc and use it for Win8 installation. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

If you have more questions you are welcome.

Also in tools, disk defragment, it shows all my partitions as being SSD drive thus I cannot defrag.
Why are they being displayed as SSD? I believe the main drive is a 500gb HHD and only a 32GB SSD is included.

Also in computer management the SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity and it is unused (all of 11.22GB free)

I've bought this m/c secondhand (production date 8th Feb 2005) and wondering if I should invest in a replacement battery. After a full charge it shows a duration of about 1hr 20min but this decreases very quickly with use and don't think I get more than an hour operation out of it.

The battery is an 8 cell Li-ion 14.8V 4300 mAh

Should/can I expect something better?

Answer:Battery Life on one charge Satellite Pro A60

Hi

I think it?s not easy to say how long the notebook should runs only with a battery.
The battery working time depends on the notebook usage. You know, it depends on the applications and devices which run on the notebook. Heavy software like games or videos needs more graphic performance as the Office software. If the drive or HDD spins all the time so the battery performance will also decreases much faster.

But you could also try to buy a battery witch better performance. On the Toshiba page I have found a battery for Satellite Pro A60 and it?s a Battery Pack Li-Ion, 9 cell, 4500mAh. As you can see this battery supports 9 cell and 4500mAh and should be better as your first old battery.

Hi All,

I've had my new notebook for 2 months now and overall I'm satisfied, the only 2 points of clarifications I need for help help are the below:

1) When I fully charge the battery and then click on the battery icon on the bottom right the battery life remaining is 1 and half hours....!
I thought the average standard was 3 hours? Does it mean my battery is faulty? If anybody else has the A300-1MC what is your barrey life?

2) When I start up the unit it takes around 1min and a half...I have uninstalled all startup applications and disabled un-needed applications in the device manager, is there anything else I can do to speed up the start up?

Any help & suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Satellite A300-1MC and Battery life

Hi, I have a P300D-13j
I have/had the same problems like yours - especially about the loading time - initially it was about 1:30 - 2 mins. What fixed it was a fresh install of the OS and manually install of all drivers and utilities.
The second problem with the battery - unsolved. I have and other problem with the display so i took it to the service - they changed the battery with a new one. The problem with the display is still the same and the battery life is about 1 hour and 20 mins.

Previous I had a one non-Toshiba notebook with 17'', 2.5GHz CPU (Intel Core 2 DUo), 3GB RAM and so on, the battery life was about 2:00 - 2:10.

P.S. the times that i write are based on the indexes of the battery indicator of the windows when i do something on the PC.
P.S. 2. Search the net, there are some programs that check the battery. Try some of them but my opinion is that a 15.4'' display (like yours) should hold for about 2:00 - 2:30 at least.
Hope I helped in some way. Have a nice day.

Sorry but I really do not understand you. 2 hours for this ?big? notebook is for me fantastic battery running time. As you know battery running time depends on notebook usage.

If you want to have longer battery running time reduce power consumption in power saver management (display brightness, CPU activity) or simply use already created power profiles.

Answer:Satellite R630-145 - Low battery life

hi,

> But battery in my notebook (i bought it 30.12.10) works for 4 hours in most economic regime

try this:

Unplug the computer from the AC adapter and turn it on. Let the computer run under battery power until the computer turns off, indicating that the battery is fully discharged.
Remove the battery pack.
Using a soft cloth, wipe off the battery packs connectors and the AC adapters connectors.
Re-insert the battery pack.
Plug the computer into the AC adapter
With the PC turned off, let the battery charge full
Unplug the AC adapter.
Remove the battery.
Wait 30 seconds and re-insert the battery.
Plug the AC adapter back in.
Let the battery recharge until the battery icon displays 100%.

This may be a stupid question but I have a Satellite L40-139 laptop and the battery only lasts for just under the hour, is this correct.
In the power plan I have selected Power saver. I used to have another mobile system and it could last 2-3hrs. Any responses would be great.

Answer:Question about battery life of Satellite L40-139

The notebook uses Vista. Am I right?
Well, I don?t wonder that you can run the notebook only for about one hour.
Vista needs more resources as an early OS. Furthermore there are some Vista bugs which have a bad influence on the battery performance!
You can search in the internet for the Vista and battery issue on notebooks and you will find many information.
The same notebook with XP runs two times longer on battery as with Vista.

If so, pls reply. Many thanks!

Answer:Satellite Pro L300-128 and Battery Life

I've got one, and I'd say that on "full power" (i.e. constant use, web surfing for example) you're looking at an hour and a half. You can improve this by using the Toshiba Power Manager function to shut down the CPU, hard disk and screen during periods of inactivity, but if you're constantly using it then 90min is about your lot.

Looking on the net, this seems par for the course - although this is with the standard 7-cell (I think!) battery; I believe you can buy a high-capacity 9-cell version.

Hope this helps.

I have recently aquired an L20 and am amazed at the incredibily short battery life of between 60 and 90 minutes which means nearly always being connected to the mains and thereby defeating the laptop's portability. Is it possible to upgrade to a longer life battery?

Answer:Satellite L20 - Short Battery Life

Hello

Well, t would be very interesting to now how old is this battery?
As far as I know you can charge the battery about 500 times. Then the battery loose performance. Furthermore you should always remove the battery from the unit if the AC adapter is plugged. If the battery is plugged and you use the AC adapter too so this procedure has a bad influence to the battery performance.

My laptop is very nice....but i can work 2 hours with te battery full-charged. Medium brightness and working with wifi.

I?ve read that should work around 3,5 - 4 hours. 2 hours seems poor for me. Is the third complete charging, from 100% to 3%.

Is this normal or should i change my laptop??

Sorry for my english...

Thanks so mach to you all for any ansewer

Answer:Satellite L755-18E life battery

> I?ve read that should work around 3,5 - 4 hours. 2 hours seems poor for me. Is the third complete charging, from 100% to 3%.

Battery working time demands on the notebook usage. So if you run high performance games or other software and use a lot of hardware performance then the battery would discharge much faster!

If you want to extend the battery working time, then you should check and change the settings in windows power management

Answer:How long is the Battery Life of a Satellite L30-113?

Hi there,

I know that machine, but primary the battery life depends on the battery capacity. Like I know there are two sizes: 2000 mAh and 4000 mAh.

If you just use it for surfing and etc. you will have a battery life of about 2 hours with the 4000 mAh.
But be warned: should you have more applications running in the background or opened, your battery life could be shorter. (more system loads means shorter battery life)

And last but not least your battery life depends also on your powersaver settings, so you will have to figure out the configuration which fits for you (performance vs. battery duration)

Hope I could help you

I have a problem: my laptop works only 1hour unplugged to electricity, so my battery is dead after 55minutes working (I mean watching photos or typing in WORD). Is it normal? How long is average battery life?
My model is SATELLITE A210/1AP (4000mAh) (my laptop is new; I bought it a week ago)
Please write how long does your battery work maximum.

Answer:Satellite A210 - question about battery life

It is not easy to discuss about this theme. With the similar activity I can use my Satellite A200 about 1 hour and 15 minutes. I do not know how you use your notebook but I recommend you to use all power settings that can make the battery life a little bit longer.

Check cooling method, power profile, reduce the display brightness, and disable WLAN if you do not use it and so on.

You must also understand that Vista needs much more resources than WXP and the battery life under Vista is not the same as using WXP.

Answer:Satellite C660-1LTD - Low battery life - only 3h

Hi

3 hours are ok?I mean the battery working time depends on the notebook usage and well, it varies.
If you want to extend the battery working time, I recommend to decrease the display brightness and changing some settings in Windows 7 power option to more ?battery friendly? level.
For example the CPU, cooling modules and GPU performance can be decreased to get longer battery working time?.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I bought my new laptop and put it to charge straight away over night without using it.
Today, when I switched it on, within 15-20 minutes, the battery life went down to 89%.

My question is, is this normal battery life?

I have already adjust power savings, brightness etc so as not to waste the battery life.
This is my first laptop, so can somebody please advise me?

Thanks!

Answer:New Satellite L850-142 - battery life very short!

10% for 20 minutes is for me OK. I presume you will be able to use your notebook up to 2 hours on battery power supply. Of course it depends on power settings and way how do you use it.

Don?t worry and just continue to test your new piece of hardware.

Hi

Do you want to extend the battery working time in order to use the notebook longer with battery power?

Well, in order to extend the battery working time you should check the Vista power settings.
There you could assign some settings like display brightness etc? which would save the battery power.

I've just bought a C650D/006 notebook and was wondering what the best way to maximise the battery life is. That is, if I am using it with the AC power cable plugged in will keeping the battery pack installed the whole time result in a reduction in the battery life or does it not make a difference?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite C650D-006 - How to maximize the battery life?

Hi buddy,

You can maximize the batter life if you always remove the battery if you don?t need e. g. at home where you can work with AC/DC adaptor.
Furthermore the battery should always be fully charged and only be charged if it?s empty.

By the way, I found a very interesting article for you in FAQ section:

I recently bought Satellite T230-11P. Once I took it out from the package I plugged the AC adapter and used it for a while and kept it until it fully charged. But life of the battery last for 4 or 5 hours. In the manual it says life of the battery last for 8 hours.

Please help me with this problem. Should I replace the battery with a new one or is it normal?

Answer:Satellite T230-11P - Battery life only 4 or 5 hours

The life of the battery will depend on the use that you make. It is not the same to be running applications like a wordprocessor or playing a computer game. The battery will last much less if you are making a demanding use of your laptop.
If your battery does not last long and the CPU and memory usages are low and you have the eco mode on... then you should worry and take your computer to the technical service.
I hope this helps.

Hello Toshiba-users,

I bought the "Toshiba Satellite M60-154" but I want to use it most of the time on AC Adaptor.

I have read the manual but they don't say anything about the battery-life for people like me who will use the laptop on AC Adaptor the most of the time.

I want to know if :

1) it's better to put the battery inside when I use the laptop on the AC Adaptor for long time (they say it's not good for the battery-life when it's full charged and when it is still charging...)

2) it's better to take the battery out when when I use the laptop on the AC Adaptor for long time and to check the battery out each week e.g. to see if it's still charged or not (they say that it's good for the battery-life when the battery is out of charge once a week)

In fact, what should I do to be sure the battery will have a long life knowing that I rather always use the laptop on Ac Adaptor.

Thanks for advices

it's normal for batteries to decrease their run time after some time of usage. But it's definitely not normal that its run time decreases from 3 hours to 30 mins in one year. So I think if you still have warranty you will get a new battery from Toshiba service.

Anyway to get a new battery (for free or not) you should contact a service partner of Toshiba.

Hi everyone!

I've been looking for this quite a bit and all I could find are conflicting answers and some confusing instructions... :)
Even the PDF file for my U405 has some conflicting tips (is it recommended to fully discharge it or not?)

Let's say that I don't want to remove it and store it with a 40% charge in a low temperature location (?) because I also want to trust it as a UPS (power failures are common where I stay).

So, in short, what is the best way to prolong my battery life to its maximum? Should I fully discharge it once a month or only half way through? Should it never be fully charged or that's actually a good thing?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom anyone can offer on this!

David

Answer:Satellite U405 - What is the best way to increases battery life

The best way would be indeed to put it out of the notebook, but you already said, you won't do this.
So, I would say to fully unload the battery once in a while and load it to a maximum.

This is all I can tell you right now, but don't know how much this will increase the battery's life.

Since I am using laptop regularly, 3hrs of battery is not enough for me. Do you all advise me to take the battery out and use AC power only? Hope to get any valuable advice here. Thanks!

Answer:Satellite A100-1011E - How to extend battery life

Hi jimmytee,
Following the available papers, bulletins and my experience, there is no need removing the battery if fully charged when working with AC plugged on. It is only recommended dis- and recharging the battery once a month, not more. You should not work with AC plugged on and removed battery!
By the way, I am struggling currently with the battery in a new unit. The battery was discharging itself very fast with the unit switched off and AC connection removed. Now the Toshiba service has changed the battery. Will see how the situation will be after few days.

Download a program called HWMonitor from cpuid.com to view the wear level of the battery.

Lithium batteries only last about 3-4 years before needing replacement. They lose about 20%-30% capacity every year.

Hi All,

My Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old (or young :P) and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of _26 minutes_ under "high performace" mode in Vista - other power modes increase the time by only 5-7 minutes.

I have tweated the system setup to:
- run as few programs at startup;
- to use as little memory in relation to graphics (as in diabled vista themes, and "fancy" operations such as show contents of window whilst dragging).
- remain on the lowest brightness level.

The programs that do run on startup are my anti virus (F-Secure), and ATI catalyst control.

I have also cleaned the registry of any conflicts and regularly virus scan.

I have used Ubuntu on this laptop as well and the battery life is not that much better, which brings me to the conclusion that the battery is nearing its end.

I was wondering if this battery life time (26 minutes max on high performace) is normal for a laptop after only 1.5 years?* (I don't remember how long it lasted when I first bought it).

Also, I have a laptop from other manufacturer of 2 years and the charge of its battery lasts a minimum of 4 hours (on Windows XP).
Both notebooks batteries are 6 cell.

Any suggestions of how to improve my battery life?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite Pro A200 - Is 26 minutes of battery life normal?

>Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of 26 minutes under "high performace" mode in Vista

The battery working time depends on different factors:

If different hardware parts like CPU, GPU, HDD, ODD, display are running with highest performance then your battery working time will decrease dramatically?
Additionally if you would lose an stronger battery (9 cell or 12 cell) then you should be abele run the notebook much longer using battery power.
Furthermore the battery loses the own performance systematically and after a long time of usage you will have to replace the battery.

However, if you want you could check the Vista Power Options in order to increase the battery working time:
Here is a nice article:

Hello everybody,

I would like to ask a few questions abou my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?

I have my laptop since august last year and I think it shouldn't be a problem of dust, because it is too "young" for that and I don't live in a "dusty" appartment...

Anyway, I think the "almost allways running fan" problem appeared about 2 months after I purchased the notebook. I have installed "Speedfan" and I see "HD0" temperature is increasing from about 30deg immediately after I start the laptop, to about 39deg after 1 hour.

But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behaviour normal???

Is the core temperature of 45-50deg normal? I am just using my laptop for Internet browsing, e-mails, etc., no complex 3d games!

The second thing is that the battery life is (and was from the beginning) not spectacular: it lasts max. 1,5 hours with wireless on, but normal use of laptop (not playing dvd's or something like this). Is this normal? If yes, is it because of the amd turion 64x2 processors?

Please help me with some advices / opinions.

> I would like to ask a few questions about my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?

I?m an owner of a Satellite A210. It?s similar to the A215. The A210 is a European model and the A215 belongs to the US notebook series.
I have noticed the same on my A210 and I think it?s normal behavior.

> But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behavior normal???
The CPU temperature of 40-60deg is nothing unusual.
The temperature could arise up to 70-80degrees while playing a game. So don?t worry about the temperature.
The cooling modules are controlled by BIOS. The fan table is stored in the BIOS and it contains informations about temperature limits and the cooling usage.
If a certain temperature level was reached the cooling module starts to rotate with a certain speed.

Now I would like to say something about the notebooks battery life time
Generally the battery life time depends on the notebooks usage.
While playing games or watching movies the battery would discharge much faster.

Anyway, your notebook was equipped with high-performance devices and as far as I know the Vista was preinstalled on this series. Both factors (high performance devices C... Read more

Hi guys,

I have a Satellite M105 and I think Im not getting good battery life out of it. I've had the machine for 1 month and I can get barely 1:50 mins on battery power, with minimum brightness and wifi on, just surfing the web and listening to mp3s. Is this the expected performance for this machine type?

It has a 1.8 Core Duo, 1 Gb RAM, 80 gb HD, x1300 ATI 14'' Any clues? I use the "long life" power saver scheme from Toshiba application. My battery wasn't affected by Toshiba voluntary exchange action.

Thanks

Answer:Satellite M105-SP381: short battery life time - about 1:50 mins

HI Juan,

Different parts of you notebook will use power at higher or lower rates. Generally any component with a mechanical action (your hard drive, optical drive, Floppy drive etc) will use somewhat more power than the CPU, RAM etc.

The effect of this is to drain the battery faster if the hard drive or optical drive is in use. So typically you would expect to get longer battery life if you were using an application such as Word or Excel where there is minimal hard drive activity unless you are constantly saving or loading documents.

In your case the playing of MP3 files will need to constantly load data from the hard drive (albeit cached to reduce the number of accesses) while you internet browsing is constantly writing pages to your Temporary Internet folder (as well as accessing your anti-virus database). All this hard drive activity will mean that the hard drive is never allowed to spin down and so will need to use battery power.

As long as you follow the usual recommendations for optimising your battery (allow it to discharge fully from time to time) I think the time you are actually getting is reasonable for the type of activity you are performing.

regards,

After 1.5 years, the battery life dropped from about 100 minutes to less than 30 minutes.

I suspected the battery was bad, but after Windows automatically shut down because it thought the battery was empty. I plugged in the power cord for about 10 seconds, started the laptop, unplugged immediately and let it run in the BIOS screen. It was running for more than 45 minutes until the laptop turned off. So

I guess the battery still has high capacity, but somehow the calibration data became invalid.

Is there a way to recalibrate the battery? I did not find such a feature in the BIOS, where all my other notebooks do have such a feature (although I never needed it for the others!)

Regards
Thomas

Answer:Satellite A100 - Battery life dropped from 100min to 20min after 1.5 years

Hi

I think you are a little bit confused regarding the battery life time and the battery performance.
But you shouldn?t be confused because this is nothing unusual.

After about 500 times of charging/discharging, the battery will start to lose the own performance.
This means that after a longer time of usage the battery performance will decrease and someday you would need to replace it.

My 7 years old notebook doesn?t run on battery anymore. The battery power lasts for about 2min even it?s fully charged. I know I should replace it but i use this notebook as ?desktop Pc?. It?s always connected to the mains.

So don?t wonder about your battery performance. It?s a normal behavior.

And the fan kicks in so often it becomes annoying. It sounds like a small strimmer, or a moped and I'm sure it'll bother students in the college campus library.

Answer:Battery life in Satellite U920T and annoying frequent buzzing fan spinup

Hi
>is there a setting I need to change?

According to the Satellite U920T specs page where the details about the battery working time are mentioned, you should be able to use the notebook up to 4 hours running with battery power.
You should know that battery working time depends on notebook usage. Very bright display settings may reduce the battery working time dramatically. Also running heavy performance applications like game or graphic editor tools would decrease the battery working time.

But the notebook seems to be very new and the battery isn?t calibrated therefore I would recommend you to calibrate the battery firstly. The calibration means charging and discharging the battery fully and to repeat this procedure several times in the row? after some days of usage and calibration, the battery should reach the full performance level.

Hello,
A week or two ago, I started seeing a pop-up appear on my Inspiron screen (I run Windows 8). The pop-up said that the AC adapter was not recognized, and therefore, the battery would not charge. It was the same 65W adapter that came with the laptop. I hit F2 at startup to check the BIOS, and it said the adapter wasn't recognized. I decided to order a new adapter. While I waited for it to arrive, the battery gradually drained down, but the laptop continued to work while plugged in.
The new adapter came today, an official Dell adapter. I plugged it in... Same error message. Adapter not recognized.
I ran a check on the battery; the system says the battery is fine. I pulled the battery, and the laptop still worked via the adapter. I jiggled and checked all the connections. Couldn't find an issue and couldn't make it work.
I checked the BIOS version and date, and it's from 2013. Time for an update! I downloaded the latest version, but here's the problem: It won't install without the battery sitting at at least a 10% charge. The battery, of course, won't charge with either adapter (it's reading at 1% now). So I can't update the BIOS without some battery life, but I can't make it recognize the adapter and charge the battery without the updated BIOS (assuming that's even the problem, but I'm hopeful that's all it is).
If anyone has any suggestions for how I might make this work, I would very much appreciate it! Thank you!!!

Answer:Catch-22: No BIOS updated without battery, no battery life without BIOS update...

Please list Dell model number and version of windows. Ex: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
If you don't know, type msinfo32 onto the search box, and then look for System model.....
In the meantime, please check the USB port, where the AC adapter is plugged into system, is loose. You could also wiggle the Adapter's end while checking it in the BIOS to see if the Adapter's type appears.

Hey all,

A couple days ago I updated my windows because it was one of those important security updates. The update is called KB2286198 and after I got done installing the update and restarted my PC, I noticed my PC's performance decreased. I mainly noticed the performance decrease in one of the games I play because the frame rate dropped. So in an attempt to get rid of the issue I tried system restoring to right before I updated. That didn't work, so I tried reinstalling the update to see if I'd have better luck with it the second time around. That also didn't work. Finally, just so the update wasn't on my comp, and until I could find a way of fixing the issue, I system restored back to before I installed the update again. Mind you before this update my comp's speed was fine.

So now my comp is still slown down and the update isn't even installed on my comp. Could it be possible that the update left remnents of itself on my comp that could be making my comp's performance suffer? If so how would I get those remnents off my comp. Or could it be that the update played with some internal settings in my windows?

I'm basically at a loss here because I keep my computer very tidy by doing defrags, cleaning up unnecessary files, cleaning my comps registry, scanning for viruses and spyware, doing a disc check, and defragging the comps registry.

If you guys have any suggestions on how I can recover my PC performance that the KB2286198 update messed with, I'd greatly appreciat... Read more

Hello

I want to change the HDD of my Sat U940-100 by a SSD.
I can make a perfect copy, but when I change the HDD by the SSD it goes wrong.
Someone can explain what I have to do?

I think it has to do with het SSD of 32 GB that is already inside?
Do I have to change something in the BIOS?

thanks in advance

dag

Answer:Satellite U940-100 - replace HDD by SSD

What do you mean it goes wrong? What have you done exactly?

In my opinion after HDD exchange with SSD you should install original recovery image and start to use your notebook with “factory settings”.

Hi everybody,

I would like to replace the HDD delivered with my new Satellite U940-120 notebook with an SSD.
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to get access to the HDD slot without breaking the cover.
I get through to the memory sticks but no further.

Any help with this is much appreciated.

Doesn't appear that any dev is being done here for drivers. I have issues with:

- wifi - have to run windows repair to get it working at times.
- backlt keyboard - sometime wont work after sleep
- battery life is poor - 3 hours max

Answer:Satellite U940 - any new drivers?

Never read about such Wlan issue. In your case I recommend checking the WLan configuration and maybe should run an short test without the usage of any Wlan encryption settings. Test also with different Wlan routers?

> backlt keyboard - sometime wont work after sleep
It looks like you already created two other threads about this issue. So follow the discussion there.

Hi guys,

Did anyone disassemble Satellite U940?

I have problems with the cooling fan loud noise, so I need to open and clean it.

I tried to do that but I was not able to reach the fan since I'm not that expert and I didn't want to break anything.

Is there anyone who did it so he can adivce me?

Answer:Disassembling Satellite U940

>... since I'm not that expert and I didn't want to break anything.
That the reason why you should not do anything. Small mistake and you can damage something. There are many small plastic holders that can be broken.

Notebook disassembling should be done by authorized personal only and following instructions from maintenance manuals.

Have you tried to reduce cooling fan activity changing settings for cooling method? You can find it n advanced power options.

Hi, I just bought an ultrabook Toshiba Satellite U940-180, and in the description of the product, in the shop's website and in the official website of the product, it says that the Satellite U940-108 has an _*illuminated keyboard*_, in order to use it in the night without light.

The problem it's that *I don't see that illuminated keyboard*, i don't know if really exists or not.

I wish you can help me with this problem, thanks.

I found this model specification and this model doesn?t have illuminated keyboard. Is this written under ?Teclado??

Have you spoken with your local dealer about that?

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Good morning,

I have a problem with my computer.
I installed a dual-boot Ubuntu/Windows 8.
I disabled the UEFI mode, in order to install Ubuntu. But now, I don't have access to Windows anymore, and I can't go to the BIOS menu to enable the UEFI mode...

I tried all the combinations possible (F2, ESC, F12, F10, F8, SUPPR, ...) and none of them open the BIOS menu.

I read on a forum that if I put my battery off, it will work, but it didn't.

How can I have access to the BIOS ? Is there any secret combination that I haven't tried yet ?

Thanks for your help.

My U940-102 will not boot today.
It was a very good notebook until I "upgraded" to Windows 10 this summer, after that the boot was slow (probably the upgrade did not take account of the SSD/HDD RAID configuration) and occasionally an update of Windows 10 would get stuck - on one occasion I saw no choice but to remove the battery, which killed the battery dead. Since then it had occasional disk glitches, then yesterday another update of Windows 10 took ages and then showed a "Recovering Disk .- may take over an hour" message. A minute later the system was up and running, but when I turned on the notebook today I got just a black screen and the fan whirring erratically plus a little disk noise, two white LEDs illuminated up front.

The good news is that:
- I have a backup of my data on an external HDU, although there are a few recent files I would like to recover from the PC
- I have a "twin" of the PC, a near identical and working U940-102 also "upgraded" to Windows 10.

So how should I proceed?
Is it likely (as I guess) that the problem is only a faulty HDU and it is worth replacing the HDU and the battery?
If it is the HDU, should I replace it with another SSD/HDD unit (which) or just a pure SSD ((which)?
Is there anything I should do or try before purchasing the new HDU?
Do I need to make an installation disk on a 16MB USB stick and if so would it be sufficient to do this from the "twin" under WIndows 10?
Am I going to have... Read more

Answer:Satellite U940-102 fails to boot

Still hoping for some help.

I created and verified a System Recovery on a flash USB stick using Toshiba Recovery Media Creator on the "twin" U940-102.
That went ok but with the flash USB stick in the faulty PC nothing happens.
Either the PC is set up to ignore USB stick during boot or I am doing something wrong.
I tried holding down the power key (after about 7 seconds the PC powers down) and then holding down zero key while
pressing power again, but it just whirs on the HDU and occasionally the CPU fan with a completely black screen.
Tried all three USB slots but no difference.

Hi there,

friend of mine bought the Toshiba Satellite U940-11L which had Windows 8 on it, due to certain reasons she wanted to have Windows 7 installed on it which was fairly easy.

The trouble came with installing the Symantec touchpad, after the installation of the drivers it worked for about 10-15 minutes but then it stopped working.

Tried to uninstall and install again but no luck, found couple of threads where it was suggested to remove all connected devices, remove battery and power cord.

Press the power button for 15 seconds then power it back on but still had no luck (I was not into restoring Bios default settings as I did not made any change there apart from disabling secure boot and changing UEFI to CSM which was required to run win 7 on it.)

Tried about 4 different sources when it comes to the drivers but still wont work. I checked the device in Dev. Manager but see no conflicts and it shows that the device operates fine but the issue still persists. Please note the drivers were specific for windows 7.

Please if you have any suggestions we would greatly appriciate it.

On another note I am not able to install the bluetooth there (HW ID shows as ACPI\TOS6205), I tried installing it few times but no luck as it still shows as Unknown device within Dev. Manager. The driver I am using is Bluetooth Filter Driver Package as FYI.

Also the computer is slower than it was with Windows 8, I suspect the reason for this is the fact that when install... Read more

Answer:Few issues after downgrade to Win 7 on Satellite U940-11L

Regarding the touchpad issue.
From my knowledge the touchpad should work even if the Synaptics touchpad driver was not installed. The Windows system contains own driver which would control the touchpad and provide some standard settings. Of course after the Synapatics driver installation you should get some additional options and some more touchpad features.

I would recommend you to download the touchpad driver from Synaptics driver page and to install it again: http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers

Regarding BT issue.
The notebook supports an Intel WLan card (Intel Wireless-N 2230) which supports the BT connectivity. The Bt driver filter package is ONLY necessary if you notebook would use a Atheros WLan card or Realtek WLan card. For Intel WLan modules such filter package is NOT necessary. To get the BT working, you have to install Toshiba BT stack!

Hi,

I just ordered a Satellite U 940-101, but didn't make the recovery USB stick.
then I couldn't entry the win 8 system.

*So I bought the recovery CDs and a external-DVD-RW.*

The problem is that I chose "*boot from the DVD-RW*", I *could not recovery the system*.

"Your PC needs to be repaired
A required device isn'y connected or cannot be accessed

*Error code oxc0000225*"

what can I do? thanks!

Answer:Satellite U940-101 can not recover using external ODD

Hi

Go to BIOS (F2) and disable the secure boot and switch from UEFI to CSM mode.
Then you could check again if you would be able to boot from external USB CD/DVD-RW drive.

To be honest I?m not quite sure if booting from external CD/DVD drive is supported by BIOS. I found just these bootable and supported devices:
USB FDD, Primary HDD, USB Memory, Network(LAN)

Hi there

My screen was broken and I need to replace it by myself but I don't even know where to start.

Are there not any screws or something? How to remove broken screen?

Answer:Satellite U940 - screen replacement

Maybe stupid question now but why do you must replace it alone. I mean this notebook model is pretty complicated for disassembling and I?m afraid it is not so good idea to do this without knowing how to do this.

What you need is step-by-step maintenance manual but such document is not a kind of public document. I really don?t know if you will be so lucky and find someone here who can help you with this. Satellite U940 is pretty new notebook. I have it too but I cannot disassemble my and help you with this.

My advice for you is: contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask if they can help you with this and how much it costs.

Hi.

I have a Satellite U940-12C netbook, really niiiiiice but i'd have some problems with the OS and initial configuration. Finally i got the Recovery DVDs free from Toshiba (as it was not my fault, but a software one), but now i have some mess here and there. So i request wisdom from you!

Initially, i tried a Recovery with the preinstalled software that didn't work, and just formatted my HDD. After that, i wrote Toshiba, that finally sended me the DVDs. But in between, i needed the PC, so i formatted all the partitions and installed a clean version of Windows 7.

Now that i have the Recovery DVDs, i want to install them. And i want my laptop to be as factory default. In order to do that, and all to work right (SSD caching, Intel Rapid, RAID...), i NEED to know what the right partitions of HDD and SSD are and how are they configurated (NTFS, primary... don't know really!).

I would be very grateful if someone with a Satellite with a HDD+SSD (32 GB) configuration could tell me. You could check this in Disk Management of Win 8 (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management)...

Also: i want to install my Windows 8 in UEFI mode. But i can't boot from a USB if i don't disable UEFI and set CSM boot mode. What are the steps to install and boot Windows 8 in UEFI mode??

All the answers will be very appreciated! Thank you very much!!

Basic
698.64GB

First partition System Reserved: 350MB NTFS Healthy (system active primary partition)

Second partition C: 698.29GB NTFS Healthy (Boot Page file, crash dump, primary partition)

29.82GB

D: 29.82GB NTFS Healthy (primary partition)

Hello!

I just bought the laptop and can't understand one thing. I heard that U-940 has keyboard backlight, but my keyboard is not illuminated. Is it a software problem or my laptop simply doesn't have keyboard illumination?
So, is Is there keyboard backlight on my Satellite U940-DPS (PSU6SR) ?
