Satellite U840-10M irregularly dead for one minute

Question: Satellite U840-10M irregularly dead for one minute

My one year old *U840-10M* on Windows 7 _irregularly stops functioning_ for one or two minutes.

This may happen either during regular operation or right after awakening from sleep.
Whether it really stops is not clear, as neither keyboard nor mouse nor touchpad react.
Hence Ctrl-Alt-Delete to check what is happening is no option.
After one minute of deadly silence activities are resumed as normal.

All drivers are up to date. Notebook is used primarily for email and surfing, hence problem appears while using Chrome and/or Outlook 2007.

Any suggestion how to prevent this erratic behaviour is very much appreciated.
Equally welcome are suggestions how to analyse this notebook in order to find out what forces this stop of activity..

Preferred Solution: Satellite U840-10M irregularly dead for one minute

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite U840-10M irregularly dead for one minute

Notebook is one year old but it will be interesting since when have you noticed such behaviour. Maybe some background activity blocks your notebook.

On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen. What you can do is to back up all your data and reinstall OS using recovery media. It will be interesting to know if the same problem happens when notebook has ?factory settings?.

Hi there, I'd like to ask this:

I have Toshiba Satellite A210-16f (since october 2007).
I irregularly hear short (ca 1sec) beep coming out of right part of my notebook (close to right speaker, del key or DC in...).

I can hear it very irregularly - sometimes twice a day, sometimes once in two weeks.

Does anybody know what is it?

Answer:Irregularly short beep on Satellite A210-16f

To be honest this issue is not known to me. If nobody posts here about this issue I recommend you to contact authorized service partner in your country. Make a call and ask if something like this is known or not.

BTW: Is your notebook preinstalled with original recovery image (factory settings)?

This just delivered 14" Ultrabook has an SSD and a Hard Disk.

Looking at the SSD with Disk Management I see it is not being used (no drive letter, 100% free).

Why not? Surely it is there for some kind of fast start, so why isn't it in use?

Should the hibernation file be on it? If so how do I move it?

Someone tell me what I've missed please.

I was wondering the exact same. Why does the SSD not show up as an available disk drive?

I have just bought a Satellite U840-10X and i can't find a case that would hold the laptop firmly without adding too much height.

I found some cases for 14" laptops but they all have 4cm of space inside, which lets it move inside.
The size of the U840 is 34,2 x 23,2 x 1,99 cm.

Anyone found a good one?

Thanks !

I am currently having a problem on my computer (Satellite U840-10R R?f?rence : PSU4WE-00E017FR).

The SSD part (32go) of my hard drive seems to be broken. I can't enable the SSD fonction in the Intel software or I experience big troubles so I disabled it. However, I still can use my computer because the HDD part (500go) is ok and has the system on it.

My question: is it possible to take the whole drive out of my computer and put a new SSD one instead ?

How does it look ? Is the whole thing looking like a classic 2.5 HDD ?

Which kind of interface would I find inside ? (Sata 3 ???)

Thank you

Answer:HDD replacement on Satellite U840-10R

I don't know how old your machine is but if the warranty is still valid I think you should contact Toshiba service and ask for replacement. Valid warranty will cover the costs.

Anyway, this 32GB SSD is with mSATA slot type Multi-level cell (MLC). On Google you can see how it looks like. Generally speaking replacement should not be problematic but if don't have experience with notebook disassembling you should not do it alone.

Fact is that SSD is placed directly under the cover and placed between RAM and WLAN card.

I have a Satellite U840 and recently it wouldn't load into windows - I have tried to recover it with the boot disk procedure (ie holding down 0 and press the power button) the system starts to do a reload as described in other posts (loading windows files - starting windows) but I don't get the warning screen and other prompts, it simply stops at the black screen with the mouse pointer.

Any suggestions?

Referring to following link for U840 BIOS update, after I follow BIOS instruction, my BIOS version still 1.6 instead of 6.2.
I would like to know on anyone who have successfully upgraded BIOS into 6.2 for Toshiba U840.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what wrong it is?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

For CD-ROM BIOS updates in Windows 7 models: (1) Boot from the BIOS CD-ROM. (2) Type BIOS at the C:\ prompt then press Enter.
For all updates: The BIOS update will force the computer to shut down or restart. Please make sure to save all work in progress before starting BIOS updates.
Power on the computer if it is off.
While the "TOSHIBA" logo is displayed, press the F2 function key to start BIOS Setup.
Check the version of BIOS and press the F9 function key then Enter to load setup defaults.
Press the F10 function key then Enter to save settings and exit. The computer will automatically reboot.

I don't know if I'm in the right place because all the other threads are videos with an answer and this is a question. But if I'm not, please point me to the right place.

I have a Toshiba Satellite U840 10M with 4GB of RAM and I want to upgrade to 8GB. Can anyone tell me where I can find information on how to install an extra memory module?

Thank you,

Answer:Satellite U840 10m - Memory Upgrade

You can use DDR III SDRAM 4GB 204-pin SO-DIMM memory modules
You can use DDR3 1333MHz or 1066Mhz modules?
But the memory speed depends on FSB (front side bus)
If FSB would support only 1066Mhz, the 1333Mhz modules would be clocked down.

The upgrade is little bit tricky because the whole plastic cover at the bottom of the unit needs to be removed. Its secured by 13 screws. So you need to remove all the 13 screws to be able to remove the cover and to get access to the memory.
As far as I know you could loose the warranty removing the cover? so would ask a service guy to do this job for you.

Yesterday i went to turn on my Satellite U-840 ultrabook and nothing happened when i pressed the power button. I had left the laptop plugged in and with an external hard drive connected (and switched on) as i had many times before.

The LED comes on when the laptop is connected to power supply, and turns off when it is not.

On checking this problem on google, most advice says to unplug the laptop, take out the battery and hold the power button down for 30 seconds or more, then replace battery and power and it should work.

However, with this ultrabook it is not possible to take the battery out.

Is there an alternative fix for this?

Answer:Satellite U840 wont power up

Unfortunately? this mentioned workaround does not work always and helps only if the notebook?s hardware is not affected.
As an alternative ?workaround? disconnect the AC adaptor and leave the notebook disconnected for a longer period of time? but I guess this will not be very helpful?

I think the warranty should be valid so in such case you should not wait for some?magic? self cure but you should contact the service technician to check the hardware.

You had to create own recovery disk in the past!
Such recovery disk allows you to install the Toshiba image after the HDD died or has been replaced.

In case you did not create such disk, there is a possibility to order such medium:

Using the Ultrabook I prepared an "emergency" Ubuntu USB boot image (used LinuxLive to transfer a downloaded .iso to a USB device) on an SD card in a USB-SD adaptor (so the card is in a USB socket, not the SD slot).

This worked fine.

But when I restart the Ultrabook using F12 to see the Boot Menu there is no text next to the USB option on the boot menu (and if I select it as the boot option I see Windows boot as normal).

If I select the Bios option on the F12 boot menu to go to the Boot menu in the Bios setup I still don't see any text on the USB line.

If I now re-power and use F12 I now do see "Mass Storage Device" (or something equivalent, can't remember) on the USB line and the machine now boots Ubuntu from it (and I can see the file system on the hard disk).

As far as I can tell, you need to go into the BIOS Setup but not do anything) before you use the F12 Boot menu if you want to boot from a USB device (well this one at least).

This would seem to be a BIOS bug? BIOS Version is 1.4

Answer:Satellite U840-111 - USB Boot option not seen unless

Not quite sure if it?s a bug or not.

From my knowledge the USB boot option would not appear in F12 menu until an USB compatible and bootable device would be plugged in.
This means that you have to connect an USB bootable device to the notebook and then have to power up the unit and press F12 to get the menu.

I read also that not all devices might be fully compatible? so it would be really interesting to know if the same issue appears using an USB bootable flash memory stick? You have tried an combination of USB ?SD adapter? I could be possible that this is the problem here.

Hi Guys,

my Satellite U840-10V display hinge on the right hand side broke when i accidentally dropped the laptop. This happened almost 2 years ago and today it came out, separating the window from the screen. I had this temporarily fixed from a nearby repair shop and was advised to contact toshiba to replace monitor head. my warranty expired in 2013 and I did not extend it.

Can anyone advise the best course of action to replace the screen? i live in ealing, London and am able to go to a service provider close by who would be able to replace this. I really like this laptop and I would like to replace the screen asap instead of dishing out money on another new laptop.

Answer:Satellite U840-10V screen replacement

If you want to fix this alone you need new parts and maintenance manuals. Can you obtain all this?

As far as I know maintenance manuals is not a public document and without step by step explanation how to disassemble the notebook this can be very risky.
What do you think about that?

Does somebody knows how to replace the keyboard to a satellite u840-u by myself? It looks to be just glued but don't know for sure. Also, my keyboard is not backlit, does it would be if replaced by one of the U series backlighted?

Answer:Satellite U840-10U - keyboard replacement

As far as I know some Satellite U840 models has been equipped with backlight keyboard.
But from my knowledge the backlight keyboard requires additional power connector (CN20).

I guess not all U840 motherboards would support such connector and therefore the backlight keyboard upgrade would not be possible.

Regarding the keyboard removal:
Yes I think the keyboard is pasted to top case by double adhesive. If you would disassemble the keyboard from the top case, the keyboard would deform and could not be used again.

In my opinion you should not try to remove anything. You would void the warranty and could damage other parts. I think such disassembling procedure should be done by authorized service engineer.

> Original driver here on page TOSHIBA ... is too old.... and driver from AMD mae this problem...

I don?t know how to help you buddy? the point is that the graphic card driver which is available on the Toshiba driver page is modified for the mobile usage and its recommended by Toshiba.
Usually you should use this driver to ensure the proper notebook functionality.

Of course you can try to use the other graphic card drivers but in some cases different version could lead to small different issues: in this case ?> brightness control problem.

However, you could try to install the AMD/ATI graphic driver from Toshiba EU driver page but check the driver released for other notebook series. Maybe you will get a newer driver version.

Last but not least similar brightness issues could be by Value Added Package update (for Win 7) as well as BIOS update (if available)

i'm gonna to do a clean install of win8 in my laptop. However i wanna ask 2 things:

1- Is the SRS Sound driver available for 8 ?

2- For formatting purposes, i know that i will need to put hdd drivers into a usb and load them during the initial phase of win8 install, right ? otherwise, hdd wont show up in the list.. right ? And.. what about the partitions ?

2.1 HDD - I wont touch in 14.29GB Partition, as it is toshiba recovery image right ?

2.2 HDD - the other partitions i will delete and create new ones for win8.

2.3 SSD - do i need to setup anything for SSD Cache ? (i.e: intel rapid center config ?? ) or win8 will automatically recognize it and setup it? i'm afraid of this part, because i saw users trying to config SSD trough intel rapid center, and the end in messing up the SSD = solution was only RMA.

I've just bought a new Toshiba Satellite u840-10n ultrabook. It has built-in WIndows 7 Home Premium 320GB HHD + 32GB SSD.

Even if I prefer Linux, i need Windows because of Microsoft Visual Studio. I've downloaded Visual Studio(legally throught but it looks like it has some problems. In particular I cannot create any project.

After searching the web a lot for this problem, I've decided to try to reinstall Windows, hoping this will solve the issue, and here is the point.

Windows 7 installation process doesn't find any drive. I've looked throught the web a lot to solve even this problem, without figuring it out.

I've read that many other people had the same problem. I've tried different ways and I'm about to throw the laptop out of the window.

Is there anybody how can help me?

I recently purchased a toshiba Satellite U840-10Q ultrabook with Windows 7 installed.
I was wondering if it is possible to be able to see the sound level while I am changing it through the keyboard keys (F9 and F10 for lowering or rising respectively).

The volume level does indeed change but I cannot see in which level it is at any time while I am performing the volume change.

Only if I check the speaker icon in the right side of the taskbar.
I searched a lot how I can do it but I didn't find anything.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite U840 - sound indicator is not visible using F9 and F10

When you change sound level using F keys will be changed trough Toshiba specific tool designed for this purposes. As far as I know there is no some kind of ?graphic sound level indicator?. I have the same situation on my machine.
In the past under WXP the situation was the same but in the middle of the screen such level indicator was shown. Since Vista and later with Win7 such graphic sound level indicator is not there.

Don't waste your time searching for some options. It doesn't exist.

My U840-113 had a hard drive failure, and I did not make any backups of the system image.
I've installed a new hard drive (no problems), but am going crazy trying to get Windows 7 to reinstall.

Here is what has happened....
-Installed Windows 7 (service Pack 1) via external CD/DVD, accidentally installed 32 bit version. No problem, but as I began to wade through finding all the drivers from the Toshiba website, I noticed some 32 bit options were missing.
-Tried to install 64 bit version - Note, from my original Windows 7 release, so prior to service Pack 1)
-Initially got error messaging indicating that CD/DVD drivers were required to continue. Really?
-After researching, downloaded drivers to a CD to use as needed. Did not get this message again as I moved the CD/DVD to a different USB port (one which had previously given this message!)
-Got though the entire installation, and I get a "hardware not compatible" message. What?!?!?!
-Tried again, same message.
-Removed the Raid on the SSD more Raids on anything!
-Tried again, same message.

So I'm pretty sure this issue has to do with the Raid drivers.

What exactly is the "trick" to do a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit on this machine!??!?!?!!?!

I'm going to see if I can get a 64 bit Service Pack 1 version (on USB!) to try for my next attempt.

I left this PC at work, so that I wouldn't stay up all night trying to get this to work.

Thank you!

Answer:Satellite U840 - clean Windows 7 installation

I have checked specification for your notebook and it was delivered with preinstalled Win7 64bit Home Premium so I recommend you to install Win7 64bit again. It is fully supported and all necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can find and download from Toshiba download page -
Please note you need drivers for Satellite U840 ? PSU4SE.

There you can also download ?RAID driver? that you must load before you start Win7 installation. I presume without this driver HDD will not be visible. Download it and save it on USB stick.
Generally speaking Win7 installation on this machine should not be some big deal. I have done it on U940 without any problem.
When external ODD is connected start notebook and press F12. Choose CD/DVD as first bootable device and confirm it with enter. I presume you use original Microsoft Win7 installation disc, right?

Disc should be read and installation should start. When you will see that disc drive is not recognized load SATA/RAID driver and continue with installation. Create partition C and choose it as place for OS installation. I cannot imagine you will have some problems with it. On my machine it worked perfectly.

When Win7 is fully installed you must start with drivers, tools and utilities installation. All stuf install as follow:
Windows 7 Win7 SP1
Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility
Intel Management Engine Interface
Intel Display Driver
AMD Display Driver
Intel R... Read more

This just delivered 14" Ultrabook is giving me mid electric shocks (they feel more like a vibration when you just brush against the metallic case either side of the touchpad).

This happens only when the PSU is plugged in, and both whether the machine is running or not.

So this suggests a leaky PSU to me, I see there are scattered reports of this happening to Toshiba and other laptops. Just thought I'd record it for reference.

Before deleting anything from the HDD, I recommend creating recovery disk.
The recovery disk allows you to set the system back to factory settings.
After such disks have been created, you can do everything what you want :)

Battery Management Software Like Sony VAIO'sI need software that lets you cap your battery charge at 50%, 80%, 100% (default), or custome.Capping it at 50% increases battery lifetime. i own a U840-10V laptop and i have a little problem with my screen brightness from the first day that i got it.
The fn keys are working fine. When i press the Fn button +F2 or F3 i can see the small panel for brightness adjustment but the values 1,2,3,5,6 and 7 (except 4) appear to have the same brightness level (the 4th is darker).

(i had problem with my backlit keyboard as well but when i reset the default settings to bios it worked perfect...)

so does anybody knows how can i fix this?

i have reinstalled the TVAP to a newer version which was suitable for my laptop and windows7-64bit, from toshiba support site but i didn't worked out.

so if anyone can help me i would be pleased...

That?s really strange.
Does it work properly when you change brightness level in power plan settings directly?

However, after all drivers installed I'm still not able to open intel rapid storage software to configure it, because right after installing it, it doesn't appear in programs or any place else.

I have been using a Satellite U840 - 110 laptop since Dec 2012 on a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. Recently, the laptop was left on standby for a couple of days. When I tried to start the computer, it initially froze. So I forced reboot by pressing the on/off button. After repeating this for a couple of times, it first showed a blue screen. After which when the computer was restarted, it showed a black screen with the following message

'Windows Error Recovery
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
Launch Startup Repair or
Start windows normally'

I have tried both these options a few times and everytime at the end of the process, it would come back to these same screen. I have also tried to press F8 and used Advanced Boot Options and tried 'last know good configuration'.

None of it seems to work and I have not been able to load Windows. I have not got any backup of my data and may end up losing a lot of vital information.

Is there anyway I can sort out the problem and get the computer to work again?

Is there any way to retrieve the data from the hard disk.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer:Satellite U840-110 - Windows 7 doesn't start - looped boot

Is there any way to retrieve the data from the hard disk.

You can remove the HDD from the notebook and could connect it to another computer using USB-to-SATA caddy.

After that you could insert the HDD into the notebook again and could try to perform the Toshiba HDD recovery.

I really hope someone can help me.

My wife's laptop is stuck in a boot loop that is continuous.

When the power button is pressed, the Toshiba logo appears, then it moves to the BIOS screen with the following info displayed;

"The operating system did not shutdown cleanly.
Reconstructiong Cache Metadata.
Please do not interrupt this process.

Reading Packed Metadata into memory...Done.
Processing Delta Log Record............1"

...and then it dies, returns to the Toshiba logo, and repeats. Ad nauseum.

I have tried to boot into safe mode by pressing Fn + F12., to no avail. I took the base off the laptop to try and remove the battery but I'm no PC hardware expert, and I didn't want to mess it up.

The full specs are; Toshiba Satellite U840
Part no. PSU4SA - 015005
Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium.

I have Linux Mint installed on a USB Drive. I would like to boot from the USB (no CD/DVDRW in this ultrabook) to recover data if possible.

Should I remove the HDD and SSD?!?! I have read some forums that say that often having Windows 7 on the SSD can cause this problem.

Answer:Satellite U840 PSU4SA stuck in infinite Boot Loop

Try this workaround:
Power up the unit and press F8 button
Now the Advanced boot menu should appear where you could choose between different options.
I would recommend you to try the option ?Last known good configuration?.
If this will not work, try the option: ?Repair my Computer?.
Here choose the first option above.

Of course booting from the Linux live USB flash memory stick would allow you to get the access to the data and to backup the important files.

I have a Satellite U840-10M, Windows 7, 64bit

Earlier this week I had to boot in safemode due to some problems with McAfee. Since then, the drivers for the mousepad and the keyboard were messed up.
I have been able to find/download the drivers for the mousepad, so that works again as it should.

But i cannot find the driver for the keyboard. So at this time, the backlight doesn't work and the FN keys don't work.

In addition, Since then i can't use/access Toshiba Accessibility.

Please give the link to download Toshiba accessibility or the appropriate keyboard driver.

Hope I can get a hand to fix my most unhappy notebook. Prob started about a week ago I left my computer for 10mins and came back it had crashed. Upon restart flashed a BSOD and restarted unable to start in Safe mode. Since tried reformat both by restoring factory image and by clean reformat reinstall of Xp pro. caught BSOD during XP pro install - Driver IRQL not less or equal message with no specifics - tried resetting pagefile, unsucessfully. System remains stable until any software or hardware is installed and upon reboot will stall again but I am able to start in Safe mode now and problems are solved if I restore windows.
Specs are Compaq N1020v notebook 2.0g P4, 512mb, 20g hdd, Ati Rs200 video.

So far I have tried:
Factory image with Sp1a
Factory image with Sp2 (didn't that would work but I was desperate)
Clean install with Sp1
Clean install with Sp1a

I also have upgraded my bios, reset pagefile, deleted the minidump folder, ran antivirus, reseated ram, performed diagnostic scan and tomorrow i am replacing the system battery.

I would appreciate any suggestions or solutions as I have racked my brain and the net and I dunno what to do next .

Feel free to ask an questions as I am sure I have left heaps out.

I've got Satellite 5100-603. There have been some dead pixels on display. I don't know is it really dead pixel problem or not because the black area seems to be behind the screen. When i move left and right sides, the black area moves left and right sides too (as if the black area is behind the screen pixels)! And i can tell that all pixels are working OK when i look from the right and left sides of the display (because the pixels that seems to be dead, changes at different looking angles).

Are there really dead pixels or is it some other problem?
Is there anything that i can do about it?

For info, i am using my laptop for 2,5 years and there is no warranty of course...

Thanks for any help..

Answer:Satellite 5100 - Question about dead pixels. Is it really dead pixel problem?

Due to your description it is not easy to give you a proper answer. On my old notebook I had two dead pixels and it was easy to see them at the boot up process. At the beginning you can see Toshiba welcome screen and dead pixels are usually green (background is black).

Sorry but there is nothing to do. You must live with it because exchanging the display is very expensive.

Satellite M40x-175.

I have updated its BIOS to the latest version (1.60) and since then the hard drive keeps falling asleep after one minute regardless of Windows Power settings or Toshiba Power Saver settings.

Is Toshiba going to release an updated BIOS soon?

Please help.

Answer:HDD keeps falling asleep after one minute on my Satellite M40

I don?t think that it?s a BIOS malfunction. As far as I know in BIOS you can change settings for HDD. Please check it. Furthermore Toshiba Power Saver disabled the Windows Power settings. Did you check the modes settings of Power Saver?

I'm using a Satellite L30 laptop. One thing I am finding annoying is that the fan kicks in quite loudly every minute or so, then quietens down for a while. Using a temperature monitor it looks like the fan kicks in when the temperature rises above about 50, then slows down as it falls. When the temperature is below 45 the fan stops altogether which causes the temperature to quickly rise back above 50.

I want to change the power management settings so that the fan stays on quitely at lower temperatures. I have a desktop computer where it is possible to change the fan settings in the BIOS, but I can't find anything like this on the laptop. Can anyone suggest where I should look - are there any open source or shareware tools which will do this?

Answer:Fan kicks quite loudly every minute on Satellite L30

did you already updated your bios to the latest version? If not, then hurry and check if a newer version is available since most bios updates are correcting some issues like powermanagment settings (ACPI :)) and some other stuff.

Another idea would be to clean up your ventilation system of your machine because a fan which is clobbed with dust, doesn?t work quietly and accurately . A can with compressed air from any electronic market does the trick. :)

I just buy a satellite Toshiba there two days now but the fan will turn on every minute when I go only on the web ...

Listening to music / watching videos, it is almost covered by the sound, but otherwise it's really headlock.

It blows every minute 10/20s, and force even if it is not that strong, it's really disturbing.

Is this normal?

Answer:Satellite C660 - fan turns on every minute

The fan would turn on if the CPU would be stressed.
You can check in task manager what process stresses the CPU and could check if you could disable this.

Furthermore I would recommend checking the Win 7 Power Management
There you can change the settings for cooling modules to battery optimized.

Hope this helps

My USB sockets went intermittant on Sunday night for no reason. 1 min they were working the next they are not. They seem to work when I turn on the laptop then they stop for no reason.

I have

1 removed and reintalled drivers in Driver Manager
2 installed latest chipset update
3 rebooted PC

Any one know why this would happen, the slots are secure, sometimes they work then they just stop for no reason!

Answer:Satellite C650 - USB slots working for 1 minute only

What operating system is installed at the moment?

Usually such problems with USB ports can be solved due a chipset driver update and removing the USB ports in device manager but it seems that you have done this already?

Do you see something unusual in Windows event viewer?

In your case I would also loading the default settings in BIOS (press F9 key). Have also a look on Toshiba website if there is a newer BIOS version available.

My guess is the shutdown delay is caused either by the ethernet or wireless boards because while shutting down Fuduntu it locks on the "Shutting down NetworkManager:_" routine before resuming the shutdown sequence.

This happens in both windows and Linux.

Who knows which applications are preinstalled?

Obtain second HDD for testing purposes, put it in your notebook, install original recovery image that you got with your notebook and test t with ?factory settings?. If the same happen again and again then we can say: OK there is maybe some software related issue or anything else.

Hi! I need your help! Whenever I switch to battery power, suddenly, one minute later, my laptop turns off for no reason! The battery is fully charged. What do you think the problem is? My laptop is 4 years old.
It's a Satellite 1400.
Thanks a lot!

Answer:After one minute on battery power my Satellite 1400 switches off

Hello Krissy

In my opinion everything that happens has some reason. According to your description I believe that battery is at the end and must be replaced.

It can be that battery status is full but there is no enough power. I have similar problem with Tecra 9000. Unit is also about 4 years old. On battery it runs maybe 10 min but after that this time it switched down suddenly.

However, my display often (but not always) turns itself off after only a minute or two of inactivity.

Can anyone explain this weird behavior?

Unfortunately I don't have some logical explanation for this behaviour, especially if this happen ?often?. Try to disable screensaver and check if this will happen again and again. Change also display settings and check if there s some difference.

When I turn on the computer about twenty minutes is quiet. Than fan starts like a hurricane, slows down and stops. It lasts few seconds. The fan works in this way regularly with one minute intervals.
Is there any possibility to switch the fan on continuous work in slow motion?

Answer:Satellite L20-182: fan doesn't work properly - one minute intervals

If you go to toshiba power saver you should be able to turn your up or down. Once you open this program from control panel, you have the option to change how much your processor runs as well as how much your cooling modules work. Turning either one down will make the fan not come on as much. Then you might want to try and use a vacuum cleaner to suck the air intake grills to clean any dust that could be clogging it up. Dust can make the fan run more because the lack of cool, fresh air entering the system to cool the cpu. Hope this helps.

Hi there.  I've had my lenovo laptop for a good two years now and have been pretty happy with it until recently.  About four months ago it got infected with the nuqel.e virus and I spent a good two weeks making sure the thing was gone and dead.  However, it hasn't left my laptop the same.  The USB Driver does not respond to new USB devices (However my phone charger and tablet seem unaffected by it), and, even more irritating, the computer itself has taken to shutting down every so often afterawhile.  The irregular shut downs vary from high activity on the computer to simply transporting it in sleep mode to somewhere else.  It shuts down both while plugged in and running on battery power.  Generally I can get a good four hours on my computer before the problem occurs, but afterwards it will refuse to operate for more than a few minutes at a time, sometimes shutting down in the middle of me starting it back up.  The computer is no hotter than normal, however the CPU usage jumps from 22% to 100% to back down again frequently. In a boredom fit, I tried restarting it over and over again after the problem occurred at school and got several error messages and finally, the BSoD.  The two failed to initialize error messages I caught were: (0xc0000189), (oxc0000009); and at the BSoD: (c000021a), (0xc0000001) - (0x001007fc) If I don't keep the computer off for a couple of hours after the problem it will not operate for the first ext... I run my DSL connection through a phone port in the master bedroom. After having the connection for about a month, the connection now only works either at night, or when someone calls. The provider ran tests and says when the DSL is active I have a good connection, but when I get no signal they can't see the modem. It seems that other plugs in the house works. Would a a new phone jack help?

Answer:DSL Works Irregularly

A phone jack may or may not help. It depends on what is causing the problem.

Carefully open the existig jack and make sure wires are fully secured to the screws inside jack.

Try to use a differt phone cable between the jack and the modem

At the service internace or where they spliced the main phone wire and branched off to the jacks in that bedroom and other locations, check the wires, make sure they are in good shape and secure.

Why is it only working at night? Anything to do with expansion and contractions or wires and other stuff causing make or breaks depending on that? Who know....

Push comes to shove, you may want to think about chaning the location of the modem and plug it into the jack the works. Then use wirless or run cable to connect to the computer in the bedroom

I have Vista Home Premium on two PC's and the network between them has been running fine for well over a year but for some reason, the 2nd. PC keeps disconnecting for no obvious reason.

Weird thing is that it will run perfectly for a week or so then start disconnecting several times or maybe only once, then run OK for another few days etc. etc.

What could be causing this annoying problem?

Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

I have read 'XP freezes a bit to often' dated 16 Feb, but the suggestions do not help. The freeze can occur any time, any program, sometimes not for a day or two, sometimes within a few minutes of startup. The only thing to do is switch off, as neither keyboard nor mouse do anything. I have saved all data, and reinstalled XP, which included reformating the hard disc, only reinstalling the programs I actually need, in case there was a software conflict. Things ran OK for a few days before the problem came back. I have run memtest, which reached about 8000% with no errors when the machine froze again.I have a Presario 2541EU, and entering setup to look at the BIOS (Phoenix), on the tools tab there is a hard disc self check test. I have run this, which it says should take about 40 mins., but after about 1 min. it stops with the message #1-07 fail. What does this mean? Could a faulty sector on the HD be causing the trouble? Any ideas?

Its totally unpredictable, suddenly the PC restarts.
I hope i'm able to make some sense, sorry, if i don't!.

This has been going on atleast for past one month, but now its just not possible to ignore this as my entire work gets hit badly & I fear i could end up getting some hardware fried in this process.

Pl let me know what other details you would require, to investigate this.

Also, i thought of getting a format/reinstall done but i just don't feel like.
I tried doing a "Startup Repair" from System Recovery Options, as somebody suggested here on the forum, but when i click on the same it says - no errors found!

Kindly help!

I mean, it can run at a stretch for say, 3-4 hrs & then the screen blacks out & suddenly

restarts, whereas sometimes it just restarts-reach the desktop-& restarts again!

I try to fix my grandma's pc.

The problem is that the monitor blacks out for a few seconds now and then.

I put up a clean install from windows 7 ultimate. So all software problems are solved with this.

The motherboard has been replaced 2 months ago (Asrock FM2A55M-DGS). She uses the onboard video card.

The processor is an AMD A4-5300.

When i was testing and installing the windows updates at home, the problem occured maybe 2x in 4 hours this morning.

When i got to her house putting the computer to use (as i thought it was fixed tho), the screen blacks out again like 1x in about 10 mins, sometimes it happens multiple times in 5 minutes too.

I now think it might be the psu giving just enough/just not enough power to the motherboard, and the first thing that would shut down would sound logically as the monitor to me.

Also when the monitor is black and you are typing something, when the monitor is back, the text you typed is there. So the system itself does constantly have enough power.

Does anyone have ideas to help me out with this?

thanx in advance!

Answer:lenovo 3000n200 irregularly freezing at shutdown

Not sure what is the problem as there can be hardware as well as software issues. Check if you had any recent upgrades (e.g. RAM) / new installations that you think might be the cause.what OS do you have on your laptop - vista/xp?what model / type of n200? Dh.

Greetings, As the subject describes, my laptop screen flickers quickly and at irregular intervals.  I notice it once every 3-5 minutes or so but it could be more frequent, perhaps at times when I am not concentrating on the screen or it is too light to notice.  It is quite irritating and noticable though.  The flickering started about 3 weeks ago and doesn't seem to be getting much worse.  I spend time in both Fedora 24 linux and Windows 10.  It occurs in both operating systems, but seems to occur more frequently in Fedora.   I had the original screen replaced by a repair shop last year for an unrelated issue.   The flickering is not like the problem posted here: Any advice is appreciated.  I am afraid my laptop is no longer under warranty, so I will be stuck paying to repair this issue.  If so, I would probably disassemble and replace the effected part myself since I have the tools and some experience doing this.   Thanks

The internet comes and goes. I'll have pages load instantly for a minute or so and then the next click the pages times out. A minute of page refreshing and more time outs and then I'm back to blazing speeds again. This repeats again and again. Restarting the computer, cable modem and router seems to make no difference. I've tried IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari, and again, no difference. I have 4 computers on my home network. This happens on all of them but for the sake of troubleshooting this I have physically disconnected 3 of them from the network. I've reset and reconfigured the router. I've removed the router and connected straight to the modem. No problems. Blazing connection. Added the router back in the loop, reboot and problem occurs immediately. So router problem, right? Had a similar problem in September and had to do factory format. Starts with Error code of "Windows Delayed Write failed" affecting config/SysEvent.Evt. Was just reading a page on Net. Soon as error status shows - system freezes and have to manually shut down. Restarting puts me at Compaq logo screen with the options for Boot Menu, Set Up or Recovery... only can access set-up occasionally, other options don't work.

Unplugged computer, discharged excess power and waited several hours, rebooted and same option page hangs. Repeated, waited one day, rebooted and computer booted up normally although slower. Went to earlier restore point (11/12/007). Was deleting some files and checking to see if corruption coming from another place. Checked Music files (hadn't added any since reformatting) and I've got DLL16.DLL, DLL32.DLL files in it. Tried to open and got warning notice. o.0

Have AVG antivirus, spybot S&D, Spyblaster, A-sqared 3.0 - all recently used for scanning with no problems. Did notice after reformatting my D-drive, FAT32 has only 6% space left, while C drive has 85%.

What on earth is going on????

Hi, this is my first topic.

I bought my notebook in December 2009 and now I've got a very nervy problem:
The notebook freezes sometimes without any reason. When I'm playing any games or listening to music it freezes, I can't do anything and the speekers give a loud noise, like scratching!

The only solution is to hold the power button for about 5 seconds and to reboot the system.
But the problem happens also, when the system is in normal windows-mode. But it happens very irregular.

I had BIOS-version 1.4 and there I had the problem. Today, I upgraded it to 1.9 but it didn't help.
Is there an other solution? Please help me...

Answer:Qosmio X500-10U freezes very irregularly! Only reboot helps

This ?sometimes? issues are not easy to understand.
You must also understand that every of us has own operating system configuration and favourite applications.
You got notebook with ?factory settings? and clean preinstalled operating system. All installed stuff cannot be responsible for these freezing issues. Who knows what you have installed last two months and which processes are running in the background.
Maybe some Microsoft updates block something.

Sorry but I think it will not be easy to find final answer why this happen.
What do you think?

So I've been having on and off issues with my computer for a while that became really bad after I set up my XBOX 360 as an Extender a couple of weeks ago (I have since undone that), Windows Media Player started to regularly crash and I'd noticed that every now and again my network adapter would just drop the connection, only to instantly reconnect. Ran MBAM a few times over and used eset's online scanner. Spybot S&D and MSE as well.

Found a few win32/opencandy, a couple of listings for boaxxe.g trojan and BELIEVE I've cleaned it out. I should mention my MBAM is now the pro edition in an attempt to help with this.

So I've cleaned out several infected files over the past few days and I just can't seem to fix this last bit, and it's really starting to interfere in regular life.

Defogger has already been run.

Hello all,

As far as I know the U840-10U has a 4Gb DDR3 (1600MHz) memory module. It also has an extra socket for an extra memory module. Am I right?

Does this model have the dual-channel memory technology? I mean, if I add a new extra module of 4Gb DDR3 (1600MHz) would the computer be able to access them parallely? I'm going to do it through a oficial Toshiba SAT in order to not losing the warranty.

Thank you in advance,

This seems to be correct? the U840 supports two memory slots.
The unit supports the DDR3 1600MHz (PC3-12800) 4GB SO-DIMM and it support dual channel.

The other day, my Satellite M30, which I bought in September 2004, suddenly turned off for no apparent reason. Since then, when I try to turn it on, the power button LED comes on for a split second before turning off, and the power light (the leftmost one) on the front starts to blink yellow.

I've tried removing and replacing the battery or running it with no battery, just the adaptor, but it refuses to start up. It's unlikely anything inside could have fried, as I use a surge protector. I fear the worst - that I'll have to get my data off the drive and throw the laptop in the bin - but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I can't believe that computers these days only last a year...

Answer:Dead Satellite M30 - what can i do?

Well if the DC IN led blinking yellow it means that there is a power supply error.
In this case it?s possible that the AC adapter has a fault or there is something wrong with the power supply electronic.
You should contact the ASP, because I don?t think that you are able to solve this problem alone.

Friend's Satellite A30-514 is sitting here in front of me:

1. the power button does nothing; pushing or holding down.
2. Every six seconds a motor runs for one second
3. In the six second gaps the disk and CD lights flash briefly and there is a faint click
4. Then the disk and CD lights blink just before the motor runs
5. The screen shows nothing
6. I've tried to get to the BIOS (Esc, F1, F2, Del, F12) - nothing.
7. A bootable CD in the drive does nothing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Tom

Answer:Satellite A30-514 looks very dead

I believe there is nothing you can do alone. The notebook must be checked with special diagnostic tools. Ask your friend what he has done last days with this notebook.

Maybe BIOS update?

I think it is stuck in cd player mode, anyone know of this problem?

Right then,

I have been given this because it died. Os disappeared off hdd and never worked again. I have been looking into it myself. Have tries installing windows xp, windows 7 and two
Versions of Linux To try and make it work. One Linux worked once out of numerous tries but ran very slowly
But neither windows will work. Both freeze at same point through installation. Today won't even boot up, power connected and turned on lights come on but hdd light and screen stay off. Hdd light and screen have occasionally come on but usually after turning on and off a few times. I am pretty sure given the circumstances of the failure.

And subsequent attempts of installing operating system that the hdd is dead, does this sound about right?

Answer:Satellite A300-2C4 is dead

I also think the HDD is troublemaker and reason why you cannot install OS properly so I agree with you 100%.
Exchange the HDD with new one or other one and test OS installation. I recommend you usage of Win7 on this machine. I use it too on my A300 and it runs perfectly.

Hi all, hope you can help.

I have a Satellite Pro A60. I shut down as usual the other night, when I turned the machine on the next morning, it made all the usual noises, but no screen - just blank (black). I can link to an external screen and it's working perfectly, so I know it's just the screen.

I took it to a local repairs place and they asked if I'd dropped it and said it needed a new screen, ?180 please. Thought I'd take some advice first. It certainly hasn't been dropped or has suffered any trauma, in fact it hardly moves away from my workplace.

Could it be a fuse or something similar, or do screens just die and I'll need a new one? If it does need a new screen, where can I buy one and is it easy to fit/connect?

Many thanks,

Answer:Satellite Pro A60 - 'Dead' screen

Are they sure its the screen?

Can you see a faint image on the screen? Maybe its just the inverter that powers the light in the screen.

Or it could be a fuse on the mainboard that has blown.

Model & Specs: Satellite S50-A, Model # PSKKEC-00G007 - Intel i5 - Geforce GTX 740m - 1TB A-SATA.

2 yrs old..since purchase the laptops been pretty flawless, I've done regular up keep defrags mal-ware/anti virus scans and every quarter I ran it through a advanced system care sweep.. all was well.

The only games I pretty much play on this laptop is Counter-Strike Global Offensive and H1Z1..... about a week ago I was on teamspeak and it said I had a driver error and told me to restart, I did... and that's where it went all down hill..

I had a bunch of errors, missing desktop etc, tried to do a pc reset, wouldn't reset also tried attempting a system restore to no avail.. hard drive started vibrating and making a "writing" sound (like the disc was actively writing insanely fast..) it was so mangled i couldn't back up any recent stuff.. Is there a way to fix this problem with a software(something that really works not some bedtime stories)?

Well, it is not a common problem of the Toshiba notebooks.
But it is possible that some dead pixel occur on your LCD monitor.

Unfortunately, I don?t know if this issue is covered by warranty.
About the guidelines please check this Toshiba document.

I hope someone can help me. My laptop just died!!
It is a Toshiba Satellite L40 machine. It suddenly went off and when I tried to put it back on in the morning Nothing!!

I have tried it without the battery, with the battery. I have checked the original charging adapter with multimeter and working fine. All I get is a green battery light on the laptop itself when plugged into the power source with the battery in. I have checked the motherboard no signs of loose connections or discolouration.

I was thinking it could be the battery which has died. Does the laptop need to use the battery as part of the power circuit? I would like to know if anyone has had this issue before I spend out on a new battery.

I hope someone out there can help me please!!

Answer:Satellite L40 is dead - cannot boot up

Notebook does not need batter as part of the power circuit and you can use it with AC power supply only. if you cannot start your notebook with AC power supply without battery I am afraid there is some serious hardware problem. Probably with power supply electronic.

Such hardware malfunction is pretty complicated and it should be repaired by authorized personal only. So contact nearest service as soon as possible and ask for help.

I would appreciate any advice for my dead satellite 4030cdt, it is totally dead no response to the power button at all, the psu is working fine the main battery and cmos battery have a small voltage on them,i have stripped the laptop right down and checked all connections, the 15v dc is present on the motherboards power jack socket, all internal fuses i can see have been buzzed out, the fault i would say is related to power and i just wondered if there were any known power faults with this model, i really don't want to bin this much cherished piece of kit and any replacement parts i buy could end up costly if i buy in error, also does anyone know if the laptop should behave normally with the battery removed as this would be the most obvious fault.

Sorry if that was all a bit much to start with but i am scratching my head on this one, any suggestion greatly appreciated

Answer:Satellite 4030cdt dead

Unfortunately, it?s not easy to say what?s wrong on your notebook.
If the AC adapter works properly so I assume there must be something wrong with the motherboard or with the CPU.
In this case you should contact the Toshiba service because he can start some diagnostic test and can give you a precise answer about the fault.

About the battery: Yes you can use your notebook without the battery if the AC adapter is plugged in. It?s advisable to remove the battery if you use the notebook with AC adapter.

Hi all.

On friday of last week, my laptop started beeping and it was making noises that sounded an awful lot like Hard drive failure. As I was getting ready to transfer data, I realized that the fan hadn't come on at all. It does kick on, but barely, stench of motor failure gets all over the place though.

Sorry to ramble, but do any of you know how I'd go about replacing the fan?

Replacing fan is not complicated procedure but requires some skills. If you decide to replace it yourself, this site can assist you

Note, if you don't find exact model, look to others. Most of them are similar. Also, be careful with disassembly, will better if you use protective gloves.

A friend asked me to see what I could do with a laptop given to him by his daughter. She bought it from her work when they did an upgrade. She decided to get a new machine and gave this one to her Dad. She said she was starting to have trouble with it. My friend got it set up the way he wanted it before it started with blue screen stuff. I got it to boot one time, then nothing. In desperation, I removed the hdd and tried to run a virus scan on it. The first attempt stopped at 18%. The second attempt stopped at 10%. Now I can't detect the drive. I put the drive back in the laptop and checked to see if the bios can see the drive. It can. It runs but it's loud. No clunking or any other sounds...just louder than usual. If I lift one side of the machine as it sets on a table, the drive noise changes.

It is as follows

Toshiba Satellite A45-S121 Laptop
Serial # 24133611H
Intel Celeron 2.80 GHz
40 Gb hdd
500 meg memory
XP Home
The bios sees the hdd
It will not boot
It will not boot in a different machine
GParted does not see the hdd
Machine will not boot with XP installation disc

There is no support CD or DVD with this machine. Toshiba offers recovery discs for some machines. They say this machine is too old.

I tried another 40 gig hdd. It does not recognize it.

What can I do with this machine?

Thanks for helping if possible

I have a Satellite A300-1B9.
The old battery was not working so I thought I should be able to fix the pc with a new one. Bought a PA3534U on ebay and tried. But the pc still don't find any battery. At least it wohn't charge. So now I don't know what to try.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Answer:Dead battery on Satellite A300?

In my opinion there is a still open question if you purchased a good working battery.
I?m not quite sure if you got an orginal part even if the part number seems to be correct.

As far as I know two 6 cell batteries with the part number: PA3534U-1BAS and PA3534U-1BRS should be compatible with this A300 series and I think you should simply try a new original battery.

Many different dealers sell non-original parts from China and from time to time such parts could not be fully compatible with different systems.

No, the dead pixels cannot be repaired.
Only a display replacement can help you but the warranty would cover this only if your display would show more dead pixels.

I googled a little bit and found this Toshiba document:

I've just bought a Toshiba Satellite U500-10z from, and when booting it up i saw the bright green pixel .
I've had stuck pixels before, but they have been faint so i've lived with them - but this one is very bright and causes problems when watching films/i-player.

I've tried the pixel unsticking programs, the massaging, tapping, pressing, everything- but nothing works.
Is there anything i can do, and although i believe toshiba need 8 stuck pixels for a return, will comet be kinder.

As well as the stuck pixel there is a bright white glow (think it's backlighting problem) or another stuck pixel.

Any help/advice is welcome- thanks

Answer:Satellite U500-10z - dead pixel

I doubt the ASP will replace the display under warranty.
I found this Toshiba FAQ:

Information on screen technology and pixel failure tolerance for LCD displays

The dead pixel sum depends on the screen resolution.
So you will need 8 dead pixels for a replacement using a 1400x1050 resolution.

But maybe the notebook dealer could replace the notebook? ask the guy in the shop!

My ac adapter doe not seem to does not get warm, it is not powering up my computer, which has run out of juice completely and now cannot be switched on. I had altered my power settings so that I would always have a fair amount of battery power left, but now nothing.

Do these ac adapters die? I have had it for around 3 years.

Do I have to buy another adapter? Can I fix this one?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite P300-20H - AC adapter is dead

You cannot fix it. Order new one. On AC adapter you will find sticker with part number (PAxxxxxx) so please order exact the same model. It must be 19V AC adapter.
You can also buy one on eBay. I found also one for my old Satellite P20 and it costs few euros only.
