Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Question: Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Preferred Solution: Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

After, my computer was "cleaned" i plugged in my harddrive and and it was recongnized by Vista but when i try to move all my data back to where it belongs it wont move back. Could this be a virus problem or is my system in need off a proper virus "hunt" and a good virus "clean". i can access the files they just wont go on my computer

Could it be my hard drive infected with a virus is so tell me how to remove it

Answer:WD 250GB hard drive wont move my files

What happens when you try to transfer files? Do you get an error message? You'll need to be more specific than 'it doesn't work'

My Satellite has been going funny for the last week but today it really seems to have given up... when I boot up I get a screen which gives you the option to boot up in: Safe mode, Safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last know config and Start windows normally, yet no matter which one you select this error message appears:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system\config\system you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I have the original start disk but I cant get it to boot from the CD drive and when I press 'r' at the first screen nothing happens it just loads straight back onto this black page which tells me I have an error.

Any Help would be much appreciated, I have all the files i need backed up so I just need to know how i can reformat it from here.

Answer:My Satellite 2410 wont boot up

First of all good news: It seems it?s nothing wrong with the hardware and the new OS installation should solve the little booting problems.

And now bad news: I think you will have to format the HDD and you will lose the stored information and files.

> I have the original start disk but I can?t get it to boot from the CD drive
How did you try to boot from the CD?? Don?t press the R button but you should either press the F12 to get the boot manager or press the C button immediately after notebook starting. (The CD should be already inserted)

Hi All

I have a sick toshiba Satellite 2410-504 laptop.

When booting up it says:-

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Ive put the Windows CD in the CD drive and I've gone into the BIOS and set the CD-ROM as the first Priority but it fails to boot from CD and just continues (what appears) to boot from the HD.

When I changed the BOIS priority it came up with a

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

So after reading this error message I've check the HD is installed and disabled the net card in the BIOS but still wont boot and reverts to the error message as above.

Any other ideas? Is the HD broke?

Why wont it boot from CD?

When you do all this is there some reaction from optical disc drive? Does ODD starts to read Windows disc?

Answer:Satellite 2410-303 wont read the product Recovery CD

thats weird, is your CD-drive reading other disks? Did you tried to read your recovery cd with another computer? If the same error occurs on another computer system, then the cd is probably defective.

Just a question: I assume you want to recover your machine, don?t you?

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

I know that I can just stick any drive that will fit in, but my question is:

Can I just use the recovery CD that came with my laptop to re-install windows XP onto the new hard disk, or do I have to get a seperate copy of XP?

The model of laptop is a Satellite 2410-something, and has 30Gb and I was thinking of going for a 80-100Gb disk.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Hard Disk Upgrades on Satellite 2410

Hi James,

Your recovery CDs will work with whichever hard drive you choose to install.

With regard to your choice of drive please be careful with your choice of rotation speed. Your notebook has cooling only for the CPU heatsink so any extra heat generated by your hard drive will need to be able to dissipate naturally. The faster rotation speed on 5400 and 7200 RPM drives naturally generate more heat and this can cause problems for your notebook.

Obviously if you are not using disk intensive applications this can be lessened by allowing the hard drive to power down when not in use.

By the way I use a 5400RPM 80GB drive in my SA30 and the extra heat produced is only in evidence when I run a full virus/malware scan followed by a defrag and full image backup, and believe me the casing gets very hot indeed in the vicinity of the hard drive.

Can anyone help please? I have satellite s2410-504 (part number PS241E-6HWP1-EN) and my laptop CD drive died and I exchanged for another and now getting the IDE 1 error. I presume it's a master / slave issue and the drive has no way to change to cs etc on the drive itself.

I have been told possibly there may be a way of fixing this problem by either flashing or messing with connections on the motherboard any ideas please?

Answer:IDE 1 error with new CD drive - Satellite 2410-504

You have purchased not compatible drive. There fore the BIOS cannot recognize it because of the wrong master/slave/csel settings.
Of course in the net some gossips going around that it should be possible to flash some drives BUT I have also read that after such procedures the drive was dead and was not possible to read any medias.

I wouldn?t recommend flashing something. I assume this drive is new and you should contact the dealer and replace the drive for a new compatible one.

First of all, I'm new in this forum, I'm from Spain and my English is very bad.

Well I have a Satellite 2410-303 with a DC/DVD unit mod. TEAC DW-224E-34. This unit is crashed. I need a compatible unit or the same but I didn't find (I found one for almost $180 plus ship, very expensiveeee for me).

I need a list of compatible unit with my laptop. In the manual this information don't exits.

Thanks a lot

Answer:Satellite 2410-303 - I need a new compatible CD/DVD drive

Well, I have checked the user manual and on the first pages you can find some drives listed they are compatible with the notebook:

Matsu****a UJDA740**
TEAC DW-224E**
(** means any letters or numbers)

So if you search for a drive with Google you should find some online shops or you contact an authorized service provider to get a new drive.

Hello, I recently had a Mat****a dvd-ram UJ-831s drive installed as a replacement under my insurance policy into my Toshiba Satellite s2410-504. The drive worked fine until recently when I get the IDE #1 Error at startup and then the drive does not appear in Windows - in Win Explorer or in the device Manager. I have tried to update the firmware to the recommended: DVD+-R/+-RW/RAM Drive(UJ-831) F/W Revision: V102. But I receive the message that the drive is not connected when I am asked to open it. I should point out that I tried this update when the drive does actually appear (sometimes is just appears randomly, other times it appears after resuming from standby mode)

I have also tried 4 or 5 times reseating the drive with no luck. How can I fix my drive? I have read about master/slave issues and bridging but not too sure about this or if it is the right thing to do.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Answer:IDE #1 Error - DVD drive not recognised - Satellite 2410-504

Did this message appear AFTER you have tried to update the firmware.?
You might THINK it didn't update the drive, but maybe you HAVE successfully updated the drive to the newer Version, ... which might not be according to the specifications required for your Notebook)

Where did you get the firmware upgrade from? If you have lost physical access to the Drive due to this IDE error, than you might need to downgrade it back ON A DIFFERENT notebook that can still see it or by using an adaptor for a desktop PC.

Never do a firmware upgrade, if you are not 100% sure about the compatibility with your Laptop.

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated.

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here:

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here:

Thanks so much,

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

Answer:i wont to swap my 80gb sata hard drive for a samsung 320gb ide hard drive. i a

No the cables are not the same, SATA and IDE are very different.

So ground info is needed though....

What motherboard do you have, make and model?
If you dont know this info then Everest Free will help just tell us what is listed under Computer > Summary > Motherboard

or tell us if this PC is a OEM build as in HP, Sony, Dell etc again model and version number is needed.

These days most or majority of motherboards that employ SATA only have 1 at most IDE connections, so if your using 2 CD/DVD drives the connector capacity will be full.

If you do have a spare IDE connection, then my advice to you is to keep the SATA drive as the primary C: drive ( as they are faster in data transfer than IDE ) and use the ID drive as storage, so once the IDE drive is installed copy all your normal data/music/video/image etx files to the larger drive and just use the SATA for the OS and applications.

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me whether or not the 2410-404 is compatible with 80gb HDD's?? I've got the 1.40 bios installed.

I've seen somewhere on the internet that is selling upgrade kits including a bios upgrade... is this the 1.40 bios or another one that allows 80gb disks?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:80 GB HDD in Satellite 2410-404

There is no precise information about that. As far as I know if the BIOS don?t support the HDD with bigger capacity there is possibility to manipulate the BIOS installing different BIOS updates or even some other tools. This stuff you will not find on Toshiba download page.

Please check if some HDD supplier in your country can help you. I have found one in my country. He offers 80 GB HDDs even for old units and there is guarantee that it will work properly but it is not for free.

He tried my disk and it also works. So I guess the HDD is not wrong. I'm now confused if my BIOS supports 120 GB HDD.
I will appreciate any help.

Answer:New 120 GB HDD in Satellite 2410-304

I wonder why the HDD from your friend can be recognized on your notebook.
It's a 120GB HDD but as far as I know the notebook supports only the following four sizes of HDDs:
- 20GB
- 30GB
- 40GB
- 60GB

Usually you shouldn't be able to use an 120GB HDD.

You could use:
20GB -> IBM IC25N020ATCS04; Toshiba MQ20ksf; HITACHI DK23DA-20F
30GB -> IBM IC25N030ATCS04; Toshiba MK30kef; HITACHI DK23DA-30F; HITACHI DK23EA-30

I have a Toshiba 2410-504 P241E The 20Gb HDD is almost full and I wish to purchase another larger capacity drive to replace it.
My question is what is the maximum capacity drive and of what type of drive will this machine will support?

Note: I have the latest bios installed and the machine is running Win XP pro.

Answer:What max HDD can I use for Satellite 2410-504

Theoretically it should be possible to use a HDD up to 128GB. As far as I know the notebook has a 28bit LBA limitation and 128GB is the maximum capacity for this limitation.

So in your case I would try a HDD with 120GB. Normally it should work and if not you try it with a smaller one, 80 or 60GB for example.

I have good experience with Seagate and Western Digital HDDs but you can also buy a HDD from another manufacture. ;)

heating can be a problem because this notebook is built for slower HDDs and is not testedwith the new faster ones!

Well buddy, new BIOS doesn?t improve the maximum RAM capacity so it?s not necessary to update the BIOS.
Furthermore the Satellite 2410-303 supports up to 1GB RAM. So you have already the maximum RAM capacity.

In your case I would only update the BIOS if you have some problems with the notebook. If you can?t find a change log on the Toshiba website there is no available.
Last but not least never touch a running system. ;)

Hi Eckhard,

Try diconnecting the notebook from the AC supply and also removing the battery for a few minutes. Then re-connect the AC supply and try to power on your notebook.

If the system still does not boot then there will be a problem with your mainboard and you will need to get your notebook serviced by an authorised service agent.

Please help.

Have this old laptop with XP and the official recovery cds.
Need to format but the cd rom does not work at all.

Got in the Bios and there is no choice to boot from USB (either flash or external cd rom)
How can I boot and format the choices the Bios gives me are HDD, FDD, CDROM (notworking), LAN.

Please help me.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite 2410-303 CD ROM not working

The booting from external USB CD/DVD drive is not possible since the BIOS does not support this. The BIOS support the booting from USB FDD (diskette).

If you want to install the Windows XP on this unit without the usage of CD/DVD drive then you needs to copy the i386 folder to the HDD (i386 folder is on the Win P disk).
Then you could boot using a bootable diskette and could execute the winnt.exe which is placed in the i386 folder.
This would start the Windows XP setup and the OS installation.

in one of our notebooks we need a new harddisk. which toshiba-product are compatible to our Toshiba Satellite 2410-404?

Jan Wernecke

Answer:Satellite 2410-404: What HDD's are supported

If you want to install a non-Toshiba HDD, you can install a new one. I would not recommend going over 60GB or a speed of 4200RPM, because it could cause excess heat causing the computer to function worse, not better.

But a non Toshiba HDD you can install any 3.5inch disk you like, but my recommendation is above. Here are the originals for this machine if you like.

Part No. P000341840 HDD UNIT(30GB) MK3018GAS
Part No. P000341850 HDD UNIT(30GB) IBM HIT IC25N030ATCS04-0

In windows 7 my external hard drive does not show as a back up location.  When I go to system image, the box for what items I want to back up also has the ext drive checked. I do not want to back up the external hard drive but it will not uncheck.,
(faded lettering) I believe this is why I cannot back up my computer to it.  How do I get the back up from including the external hard drive? <input id="39f7f89d-082d-4e34-8bd3-a03da4f8d21c_attachments" type="hidden" value=""

I have had virus problems with the laptop and decided to use the recovery cd's.

At the end of the installation I get the message extraction failed and there is now no operating system on the laptop.

How can I remedy this problem?

Answer:satellite 2410: problem with recovery CD

did you checked BIOS settings? Turn the notebook on and press immediately the ESC key, load default settings and switch the DEVICE CONFIG to "Setup by OS" and try again!

Second step: Is your CD ok? Is there anywhere a scratch?

How to tighten the hinges of a Satellite 2410 please?

Answer:How to tighten the hinges of a Satellite 2410?

What hinges you mean exactly?

I think you should ask this question a notebook technician. The point is that here you can find only users here because it?s an user to user forum and I never seen anybody from Toshiba here.

By the way: It?s always interesting to speak a little bit with the technicians! ;)

I've put a new HDD in my Satellite and I recently put a disk partition on the drive (drives c: and d: ). If I run the recovery cd, will it format the entire drive as a single unit or can I set it to format just the c: partition. I don't really want to format both sections as I have a lot of irreplaceable data on my d: partition.

Cheers for any help.

Answer:Some questions about Satellite 2410 Recovery CD

yes, it?s possible to copy only to drive c:. You must choose the expert mode when starting the recovery. With this expert mode you have access to the ghost tool, where a option is specified which is called "copy image" (it sounds similar :) ). There should be some options like:

- copy image to disk
- copy image to partition

and so on. But the important option is (especially for you) "copy image to partition" which is the option to copy the data to the system drive.

I hope I could help you...

I need to restart my notebook with the recovery disc(s) but unfortunately I only have Disc 1 (don't know what has happened to disc2).

Has anyone got a copy of disc 2 they can let me borrow (I promise I will return it).
Toshiba say they do not have any in stock but can get me one within 28 days but I can't wait that long.

Thank you in anticipation.

Answer:Satellite 2410-504 - need second recovery disk

I would recommend waiting for the original disk ;)

By the way; you can also install a clean Windows OS and then you could download the drivers from the Toshiba European driver page?. There take a look into the *ARCHIVE* folder!

After installing a pcmcia card for usb 2.0 I had to realize some problems. The 2.0 wlan usb-stick didn't work properly, windowsxp sp2 hung up during new-installation of the stick, etc.
Could it be a problem of pci-usb
could it be solved by installation of new chip drivers?
In this case I would like to know, which Intel drivers I have to use...(on INTELS support-page I didn't find the drivers for i845-mp and 82801ICH3-M)

Answer:Satellite 2410 - driver update

Hi Klasus

As far as I know Toshiba doesn?t support the usage of additional hardware components and there is no guarantee that it wills works properly. Sorry but with this kind of problem you are on your own. Try to check card producer support site.

I have also bad experience with this card. If I put it into my Satellite the unit freezes and I must every time restart the unit. I was not able to solve this but now I use firewire port for my external device.
In my opinion you should use system restore tool and roll back the system at earlier time.
Before you make second try check the BIOS settings. I don?t know if this can help but set the device configuration on ?Set up by OS?.

I'm looking to upgrade the HDD on my 2410-504 but have found no information on what limitaions there are on a larger size HDD.

The thread by Sherlock for upgrading a 2410-404 suggested a capability to support upto 60Gb but the user manual for the 504 says it was only produced in 20 and 30Gb packages.

Does anyone know what is the largest capacity HDD that can be placed in a 504 and that will still be recognised by the BIOS etc?

Many thanks in advance

Answer:HDD upgrade options for Satellite 2410-504

Hello Pete

This information can give you just Toshiba service partner (responsible for hardware upgrade) or some independent hardware supplier.
I can just imagine that 60 GB HDD should not be problem but with more than that can result that HDD will not be recognized properly.

Call them and ask. Asking doesn?t cost a lot.

I have a Satellite 2410-303 (bought in 2002) with a 30Gb HD (MK3018GAS, 4200 rpm).

I would like to upgrade this hard drive with a Toshiba one with 120Gb (MK1234GAX, 5400 rpm). These HDs have the same bus type, so there should be no problem with that, but how can I know if the capacity will be recognised by the BIOS and if there will not be any heat problems?

Thank you for your answer.

Answer:Can I upgrade Satellite 2410-303 with 120GB HDD

The heat shouldn?t be a problem but the HDD size. It?s a really enormous difference between 30GB and 120GB.
In my opinion the BIOS will not recognize this HDD but I cannot say it for sure?
So I would recommend testing this HDD and please report us the results?

Some one has updates the old Satellite 1700-400 with the 80GB HDD and it works!!!
Maybe your 120GB HDD will also run successfully? finger crossed ;)

I own a very old Toshiba Satellite 2410-504, which came out and was bought in 2001/02.

Am curious whether anyone knows it's possible to USB boot in this?
I have USB key but can't boot from it.

Maybe it doesn't support USB 2.0 etc.
Am not sure.

Answer:Does Satellite 2410-504 support USB boot?

This is very old notebook model?

From my experience such old notebook series did not support booting from USB flash memory stick.
Some of the series supported booting from USB FFD drive (it?s a drive which supported diskette?. Maybe you can remember ;-) )

However, I?m quite sure the BIOS would not support the booting from USB flash memory stick

hi all,

i have had trouble with XP Pro for a while and finally decided to reinstall XP Pro - easier said than done !

My questions are :
1) How do I access the bios so it boots up from the CD ?
2) Once it reboots from the CD can I just reinstall XP ?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated !

Answer:Help ! XP and BIOS problems ! Satellite 2410

1) you can access the bios by pressing ESC repeatedly at the very beginning of the TOSHIBA-logo. You will recieve an error message. Follow the instrction and you're there.
BUT to give you maybe a better answer - Toshiba has a very nice feature called Boot Device selection menu.
At the above stated time you can either press C (short for CD-ROM) or F2.
C will temporarily give 1st boot prio to the CD Rom.
It will try to boot from it directly so if the CD is not there then you will miss the chance.
My favourite is F2. That will bring you a simple menu of bootable devices and wait for your choice.

2) From a 'real' Windows media if You have a the same type of license on the media as on the computer yes. You must go a number of steps into the installation menu before you are presented a choice to reinstall. This will take you through the same procdure as when doing the installation for the first time. You will have to decide keyboard and country-settings, name, possibly license key and so on. All windows updates downloaded will be reversed, that goes also for servicepacks.

But if you're thinking of the Recovery CD (that was shipped with the computer) then it will not only reinstall Windows. It will wipe the disk and then put the factory image back.

Good luck

I've just recently joined the "Toshiba community"; my question involves the Toshiba Satellite 2410 System Unit.

Does anyone know the maximum RAM that can be installed onto the Toshiba Satellite 2410 System Unit Model No PS241A ? It currently has 1 Gb RAM installed.

If the unit can support/have an additional 1Gb of RAM, is there a hardware/software switch/setting for the extra 1Gb of RAM to be recognised?

thank you.

Answer:Satellite 2410 PS241A - What is max supported RAM?

As far as I know this notebook (very old by the way ;) ) supports two memory slots and it seems to handle max 1GB RAM (2 x 512MB)
You could use the 512MB 266Mhz SODIMM modules.

I'm after drivers for a Satellite 2410 (PS241A-602FEP).

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite 2410 - Searching for drivers

You can download all drivers for this model on the Toshiba website: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

You have to search in *Archive* to find them. The model number is similar (PS241E) but they should still work on your model. :)

Check this!!!

These are the probs I am encountering ever since installing a webcam and SKYPE.

Toshiba Satellite 2410
Intel Brookdale i845mp
Mobile pentium 4m 2Ghz

There is no audio from the onboard speakers when playing a CD, MP3 etc. The only sound generated is a warning beep if a mistake is made.

Windows cannot execute DPVSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install.

DirectPlay Voice has encountered an error.

Since then I can no longer listen to any audio CD's and the system only makes very basic noises i.e not even the standard windows start up tune.

I have checked the sound and audio tab in the control panel which is now telling me there are no speakers available on my laptop?????? Is there a driver I can download?

I have tried to reload the drivers from the Tools CD but still having trouble

Answer:Satellite 2410: No audio when playing a CD, MP3

According to the Microsoft knowledge base article the error message appears because when you change the Audio Hardware Acceleration setting to None this removes the hardware-accelerated device from the list of possible devices. However, DSound continues to try and map to the device.

Windows cannot execute DPVSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install.

Please check this article:

i want to upgrade my toshiba Satellite 2410-404 with a new harddrive. At the moment i just have 30 gb drive and this isnt enough for me.

I checked three products of a new hard drive from toshiba.

The MK-1032GAX 100 GB model is my favorite and now my question is, if this drive works with my laptop (im going to install the drive at a technique station from toshiba, no do it myself.) or if i have to change something with my laptop, bios-update or something.

Just tell me, what i have to do for working with this drive or if my laptop isnt ready for this because it is almost three years old.

Thanks a lot.

Answer:Harddrive Upgrade Satellite 2410-404

i searched a litte bit on the Toshiba Website, but i couldn't find any information about a bigger (internal) HDD for the Satellite 2410. Toshiba sell only external HDD's as option for the Satellite 2410. You can refer to the link below. There are all options listed for the Satellite 2410: e=UK&selSeries=-1&selFamily=2326&selCategory=2319&family=2326&selP roduct=42133

Hi, when the laptop is plugged into the mains there is no power light shown on the laptop i.e. orange light. I've checked the fuse on the plug etc....

Is this possibly a power pack issue or with the laptop itself?

The Laptop now has no power, so I can't use it. When I do try and power it up the Toshiba screen appears for about 5 secs...

Answer:Satellite 2410-601 - no power on laptop

Hi Dawn,

Merry Christmas. Your problem could be with either the Ac Adaptor or with the notebook itself so you will need to check if you are getting any output current from the adapter. You will need to do this with a suitable multi-meter.

The AC adaptors can fracture the cable that connects to the notebook, usually in the vicinity of the strain connector (next to the casing of the adaptor) so carefully inspect the cable along its length and look for signs of weakness or breakage.

If all seems well with the adaptor/cable then visually check the power socket on the notebook and make sure that the socket is intact and has not been damaged in any way.

Hopefully your problem will involve just a replacement adaptor, but if you are in any doubt then it would be best to consult an Authorised Service Partner for further advice.

best wishes and Happy New Year,

I have satellite 2410-603 model of laptop. And wanted to open it for changing display hinge. So if you could help me I will be very great full. I mean just tell where i can get the hardware maintenance manual for the same model. Else is there video available so that i open the laptop........? Help me.

Answer:Service manual for Satellite 2410-603

Service manuals that you mean are not public and only for ASP?s (authorized service provider).

You can search with Google to find instructions how to disassemble this notebook. Maybe you will find something.

To be honest if you don?t have experience with notebook disassembling ask a technician for help. This is a little bit tricky.

My computer has recently crashed, initially giving the message "please insert product recovery CD-ROM" followed shortly afterwards by "HDD Password:".
I do not have a HDD password, but have the Product recovery CD-ROM, and have data on my hard drive that I would still like to salvage.

Can anyone offer a solution to my problem? Thanks.

Answer:Satellite 2410-703 requires HDD Password

I don?t know why your notebook crashed and why the HDD password is needed but fact is that if you don?t know the HDD password then the HDD is locked and not more accessible.
In such case you will need a new one...

I have a Toshiba Satellite but I can't remember what type it is.
I have the serial number and prod code which is:-

Mod: PS241e-5g7u9-eu

I had a hard drive failure and I have now re-installed XP but I have lost the driver disk,
i need to know what driver I need to download.

Answer:Re: Where to find Win XP drivers for Satellite 2410-404

Hi buddy

I took the model number PS241e and searched in google for some details and found out that this is a Satellite 2410-404.

Isn't it fantastic and clever? ;)

The drivers should be placed on Toshiba European driver page.

This is an oldie so search in Archive area.

Archive -> Satellite ->Satellite 24xx -> Satellite 2410-404 -> PS241E

Have fun :)

I have a Satelitte 2410 and I was using both Windows Xp Home and Linux. After removing Linux, I deleted the partition using Partition Magic and I think I may have erased the boot sector of Windows. I only have the 2 restauration cds from todhiba that came with the laptop and I'm not able to reach the repair utility that I've read about over the internet. I can boot Windows using a boot manager on cd-rom but I would really like to come back to normal without formatting (I did that 2 weeks ago!)

Answer:Satellite 2410 Boot problem

Unfortunately your notebook came with the Toshiba recovery discs and this means that you will not have access to the Microsoft Recovery Console which is part of the Microsoft XP install CD. Your real option is to restore your XP partition using the recovery discs.

However, if you can boot into XP using a CD boot manager then you could try obtaining a copu of 'Ultimate Boot CD'. This contains various diagnostic and repair tools which may be able to help you recover your MBR.

good luck
