Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite 1110-Z14

Question: Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite 1110-Z14

my satellite 1110-z14 has an intel mobile celeron @ 1,5 ghz. The cpu is based on p4 architecture - it should be a northwood-256.
Is there any chance to upgrade the cpu?

The 1110-z20 is powered by the mobile celeron @ 2,0 ghz - all other technical specs except the harddisc are the same... (ati radeon mob m6 with 16mb, usb 1.1 and so on...).

What do you think, can i upgrade the cpu?
Which cpu's can i use?

thx for your answers!

Preferred Solution: Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite 1110-Z14

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite 1110-Z14

As far as I know the 1110 series computer is equipped with an Intel 845MZ system controller.
I found on the Intel page some details about the Intel 845MZ chip set. It should handle the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor - M with 400 MHz FSB
On the Intel page you can find the whole CPU family.

But generally the CPU replacement and upgrade is not advisable and nobody can say if the OS will run stable after such upgrade? Therefore be careful.

I have just accquired this notebook, is it possible to install a second hard drive for back-up purposes? and is there a wireless card available I can install for internet network etc.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite 1110-Z15: Question about a second HDD and WLan

As far as I know there is no expansion slot for the second HDD. In this case you can not install a second HDD but you can create a partition on you first HDD.
You can use the second partition for a backup image or other important files.

Ii have also checked the information about the wireless existing and the wireless card is not available on this unit. In this case you can use a USB wireless stick or a wireless PCMCIA card.

Good day!

I want set a larger HDD in my notebook, but I don't know what limit have motherboard.
Can I buy 160Gb HDD and its work properly ?
And I must to buy PATA HDD or SATA ?

Help me please.

Answer:Re: What HDD I can use in my Satellite 1110

160 GB HDD on this old notebook?
Are you kidding?

According notebook specification you can upgrade it with 30 GB HDD (MK3018GAP).
Maybe more I don't know. There is no public document about upgrade limits.

My personal opinion is that you can try to upgrade it with 60 GB HDD.
Is this not enough for this oldie?

I am looking to updrage the G620 CPU in my S5-1110 Slimline. Looks like I can use most of the Sandy Bridge CPU's. My power supply is 220W. Should I stick with a 65W CPU, or can I go with 95W without upgrading the power supply? If I stick with 65W, it would either be i3-2120 or i5-2400s. Are the low power i5's noiticeby faster/better than the i3? Also, I've never done a CPU swap. Is this just plug n' play? Will the new CPU be recognized and funtion properly with no other changes, or do I need to change any settings? Windows 7 Home 64 Bit CPU's compatable with the Motherboard are listed here

What I did:

So I really hope someone can help me!

Answer:Satellite 1110-Z15 change HD

Hello Tim

I don?t know exactly how you must do it but as far as I know you must remove the cover. On the bottom side there are 9 screws and after removing a keyboard there are 6 screws that must be removed. Before you remove the top cover the TouchPad must be disconnected.

Removing HDD is on this unit very complicate procedure and if you don?t have much experience it will be much better to contact some technician or service partner to do this for you. The notebook architecture is very complicated and also sensible and some hardware components can be damaged. Please be careful if you do it alone.

I want to open my Satellite 1110 - but how? I removed the two screws behind the display and now I should remove the small panel in top of the keyboard - but how!?!? there are four small slots - the both are ok to open, but the fixing of the panel at the left and the right sides are hard to open... also I can not find any other screws there...

Can anybody help?

Kind regards

Answer:How to open Satellite 1110

The Satellite 1110 is an oldie. That?s fact and I assume the warranty is not valid?
I asked it because any own reparation attempts would cancel the warranty.
Do you have any notebook reparation experiences? If not I would recommend asking an technician for the details and advice how to open the notebook and how to remove the covers.

But I have googeld a little bit in the net and found these two useful and interesting sites!

What is the Maxx HDD-Size in a Satellite 1110-Z16?
Is it possible to install a 120Gig Hdd(2,5")?
Is there any description for 1.50-TRAD Bios Update?

Answer:Max HDD-Size on a Satellite 1110-Z16

I don?t think that this notebook and the BIOS will recognize the 120GB HDD.
According to some information provided in the internet the notebook supports HDD up to 40GB.
The problem is that Toshiba does not provide official information about max HDD sizes.
It seems you have to test it?

I have Toshiba Satellite 1110 PS111E and I want complite reinstall of my system becouse there is many errors and unstable work.
I have disc XP SP2 Home edition, same as installed on Toshiba.

Can I make complete reinstall and how (like on standart computer?)

And one more question: Does System restore the same?

Answer:How to reinstall Win XP on Satellite 1110

Yes, the procedure is nearly the same as for a standard computer. Insert operating system installation disc and boot from it.
After successful installation you just need to install all needed drivers and utilities.

All what you need can be found here:

But I don't know what you mean by "Does System restore the same?"
Programs you want to use again, you have to install first to use them. And you should backup important data, before reinstalling Windows.

I have a toshiba satellite 1110, the laptop pretends to be writing the CDs but doesnt. I can play cds and dvds without any problem though.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

Answer:CD burning on Satellite 1110

Which CDs did you want to burn?
As far as I know this drive supports only CD-R or CD-RW.
In this case if you want burn files on other CD medias so it should be not possible.
Please check that. Furthermore try to use Nero burning software. I use this burning tool and I?m very satisfied.

Have a problem with my laptop. It appears to be getting very hot, particularly in the back right hand corner. If it is left without use, then it crashes.
Can then only be reset by removing power lead and battery. Once it comes back up, it has a system32 error and does a disk check.
Could this be the laptop cooling fan or PCU heatsink not working properly. The model is Toshiba Satellite 1110-Z14/Z15.

Answer:Satellite 1110 overheating

Overheating is common notebook problem. If the cooling process is not good enough the unit shuts down on its own. This is a kind of protect mechanism. Before the hardware parts can be damaged the unit switches off.

The problem occurs because dust and debris is sucked into the cooling fan grills. I recommend you to clean up the unit. I am not pretty sure if you can do it on your own. You can try to do this using dry compressed air aimed into the heat sink grille.

Hello there...

...and at 1st excuse my bad english pls ;o)

I own a Satellite 1110. The original HDD (TOSHIBA MK3018GAP) are for th trash since yesterday (more than 40% bad cluster *grumpf*) so I have to replace it.
I also like to have a bigger HDD so it's the best time to replace the broken one with a 80GB drive.
I belive I will use a SAMSUNG MP0804H.

But now my Q:
Any problems known while using a HDD bigger than the original HDD? Is the BIOS, Bridge, ... ok to drive this HDD? Will the BIOS see the new one? Have anybody do the same before?

BTW: Unscrew and replacement are not the problem for me...

Thx a lot

Answer:Bigger HDD in a Satellite 1110

it's hard to say if you will have problems with the BIOS because there are no infos available! But normally it should work! You should try it and unless it works you can bring the HDD back to your dealer!

Hi i need help with the sounds from my satalitte 1110 model no. ps111e z14

The driver is recent, a while back the sound went on and off. Now there is nothing.

Can anyone supplay a manual to take the speakers out and test them or somthing

Answer:Satellite 1110-Z14: Sound went ON and Off

You should firstly check the device manager if there is a yellow exclamation mark near to the sound card. If not so I assume the sound card works and the driver are pretty installed.

Try different audio sources (e.g. an audio CD and digital music file) to determine whether the fault is in the speaker system or not. If not all sources could have sound problems, the problem could be in the source devices.
Connect a set if earphones or external speakers. If they do not function correctly, the system board may be defective or damaged.

I think in such case you should contact the Toshiba service partner for a further help.

Answer:Dark screen at Satellite 1110

Looks like an FL inverter malfunction.
If your display icons appears and looks like behind a haze then in all probability it?s a dead FL inverter.
This part is not expensive and the service provider could replace it

at first you should check your Power Saver settings.

It could be that in Power Saver "Monitor Power Off" is setted to a small value and your Monitor will be switch off!

Did you checked the small switch. It must be in the middle and may not touch the cover! Look if the switch is damaged!

I have had a Toshiba Satellite 1110 for about 1 1/2 years and just recently the screen has gone dark, it appears the backlight has broken or come loose. It seems this might be a problem with the LCD inverter (as a google search shows) and I was curious if my model would be accepted despite not being on this: list?

If not would this problem be considered under the Component exchange programme? The model is listed but the symptoms are not the same as mine link:

Edit: I live in the UK if that makes any difference

Any help would be great, thanks

Hi all,

I have a problem with a Satellite 1110. It has worked fine for years, but I am currently working elsewhere and the power is from a generator (this could be important).

My laptop keeps having a display crash that resets the display to 640 x 480 from 1024 x 768.

At this stage you have to reboot and you can view the error report that suggests hardware or software failure.

This says:
BCCode : ea BCP1 : 814F15F0 BCP2 : 81B418B8 BCP3 : 819AA310
BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 768_1

I have reloaded the graphics driver but it makes no difference.

However, run the laptop on batteries and it works fine.

Any ideas?

Answer:Display crashes to 640 x 480 on Satellite 1110

Unfortunately, I don?t know what this error message (code) means.
But it would be very interesting to know if you use the original AC adapter which was delivered with the notebook.
Did you try to reinstall the OS with the recovery CD?
If this issue occurs after the recovering procedure so it could be a hardware fault.
In this case the notebook should be checked by service partner

I have a Satellite 1110 notebook. It came with 256 Mb Ram which I increased recently to 512 Mb by adding another memory module in one empty slot. The specifications of the machine say that I can increase the Ram to a maximum of 512 Mb so I am already using the capacity.

Is there any way I could increase the Ram by using the PCM/CIA port or USB ports? Or is the capacity linked to the motherboard and I could only increase it to the given limit only?

On this way it is not easy to say why this happen. In my opinion you should check all settings in mouse properties and try to reinstall the driver. If there is no success it can be some hardware malfunction.

Hi there,

Firstly some questions: You have a dualboot system installed? And now my favorite questions: Which burning software do you have installed? Did you installed more then one burning application?

If yes, which one. Another thing could be if you have Nero then there could be a plugin which is known to make problems with recognising cd-drives or medias.

Please give some more information, perhaps we can figure out where the problem lies.

Hello there!

On a Satellite 1110-Z20, the screen suddenly might become dark. Fumbling around at the display-blank-button (the one pressed when you close the lid) will bring it back to life again. All energy saving settings are set to "off", still the display is blanked out sometimes.

As the display is all fine when it works (like bright enough and so on) I don't think it's the inverter, but I'm no expert on that ;-) I always thougt the inverter either works or doesn't, but not that it switches itself off suddenly.

So, what do you think?

Answer:Screen gets dark on Satellite 1110-Z20

Hi Steffen

On my old Tecra notebook I have had similar issue. From time to time the display started to flicker. One day after standby mode the display was completely dark. I was able to se that there is some open window but there was no background light.

In my case the display was replaced. Now I have new display and I am very happy. Now there is much more brilliance and I can work better than before.
To honest I am not a technician but I presume very soon you can expect totally display malfunction.

whats the best way to remove the dust on this model...

Answer:Satellite 1110 - how to remove the dust ?

The easiest way of removing dust and debris is with a domestice vacuum cleaner hose. This requires no dismantling and is therefore reasonable safe. The important thing is not to try to extract the dust through the outlet grille on your notebook. Doing so will probably compact any debris into the grilles of the heatsink. Always remove the dust through the fan intake grilles.

please help with this problem as im very desperate for any ideas.the problem started out when the comp began saying an appropriate dvd decoder was not installed and it wouldnt play dvds.then the driver for my dvd drive 'stopped' working or dissapeared as when i tried to open the drive it could not find the right file to do so.

probably because of my attempt at fixing it. i tried to fix this by reinstalling the win dvd program i got with the laptop but i got a 'serious error' message + 'this is not a qualified toshiba machine' + '16 bit ms-dos subsystem'(next line) 'C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe' (next line) 'C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and window applications'. Ive gotten the 16 bit ms-dos subsystem error before a while back when trying to install something else but thought it was because of program compatibility.
any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:16 bit MS-DOS subsystem error on Satellite 1110

normally your Satellite 1110 has no hardware DVD decoder, so your system wants a software decoder like WinDVD.
Your problem seems to be that your OS is not the Toshiba Recoverz OEM version because the delivered WinDVD CD would only work with it!

The easiest way to solve your problems is to recover the notebook and install the Toshiba WinDVD, but before you will do this save all your important data because it will be deleted!

After that procedure your system should work stable and fast!

On this unit are 2 slots available and you can use PC1600 SDRAM.
Furthermore these ram modules are compatible:

PC2100 128MB (PA3126U-1M12)
PC2100 256MB (PA3127U-1M25)

You will be very lucky if someone can give you this info. Anyway, for hardware upgrade is Toshiba service partners responsible. If someone knows which drive compatible is, than service partners.

Other solution is to use external burner. It allows you to use the newest one who burns all available formats on the market. The problem is that your unit has USB 1.0 only and no firewire port.

I'm trying to run the recovery CD on on a Satellite 1110. I just want to install Windows fresh. The neccessary files are supposed to be on the Toshiba recovery CDs that came with it.

So I did what the booklet said and booted the laptop up with the correct CD in the drive whilst pressing "C". The laptop ignored the CD ROM and loaded Windows as usual. I repeated this three times, each time the CD ROM whirs a bit but does not boot, and Windows loads as normal. I substituted "C" for F12, picked the CD ROM drive from the list, and repeated the process a few times. Again it would not boot from the CD ROM.

I looked at the contents of the CD ROM. One single 447MB .GHS file. The icon for the file is that generic "Windows doesn't know what program this icon is for" type deals.

Google reckons this is a Ghost file and needs Ghost installed to run it. The damn thing never came with Ghost.

Anyone here know a remedy to this problem?

(NB - I've tried Windows own System restore option but it only takes me back to September this year. Theres no option going back to earlier in the laptops lifespan)

I am in the UK and the machine is a UK machine if this makes a difference.

Hello Micha

Does your ODD works properly with running operating system?

I really don?t know what happen exactly there but please be sure you start with recovery CD number 1/2 and not 2/2. The recovery installation you can just start with first recovery CD. Try also please to set CD-ROM as firs booting device in BIOS.

Help threads on the Toshiba support site do not list the Salellite 1110 as a supported model for Win SP2. Does anyone know if this means (a) SP2 won't work on the 1110, (b) it works but is not supported, (c) it may work but no ones tried it, or (d) other ?

Has anyone actually tried to install SP2 on a Satellite 1110 ?

Answer:Satellite 1110 - Windows Service Pack 2

That's Windows XP SP2 !

Hello Friends.
I have a Problem with the change the HDD on my Notebook.

Can me give a construction plan from the Book?

Thank You and forgive me my English :-)

Homer J.

Answer:Need construction plan for HDD changing on Satellite 1110

I don?t think that you will find any ?construction plans? for this notebook.
The maintance manuals are not public documents and only the authorized service provider has an access to such documents.
But wait? in my knowledge the HDD slot cover is placed at the bottom of the unit.

The simply remove the HDD cover and you should see the HDD.

what is the maximum voltage rating for the motherboard in the Satellite 1110 please?
Because my current cpu (1.5ghz celeron) is 1.025 volts and i would like to change the cpu
to something faster (cooling will be dealt with btw XD)
The only problem being that the new cpu needs 1.3 volts to run.

Any info wud b much appreciated

Answer:What is the max voltage rating for motherboard on Satellite 1110?

I had the same machine years ago and I suggest you no to do this, because nothing will happen.
We tried to put a another CPU onto Mainboard and it simply didn?t boot. I don?t know why it didn?t work, but luckily the machine started after that with the old CPU on the board again. I assume that the chipset is not giving enough power to CPU. I assume, when you?re putting the wrong CPU on the Board then you, in the worst case, seriously damage your Mainboard.

I have an older Satellite 1110. It is a dual boot machine with linux and windows XP. The boot manager is grub.
When I allow the machine to boot into the default OS without touching the keypad at the grub stage, about 70% of the time when the machine finishes booting both the keypad and mousepad will be non-functional. On the other hand if I use the up and down arrows at grub stage, 100% of the time both keypad and mousepad work correctly when the machine finishes booting.

I'm trying to understand why this would be so. It does not seem to relate to the OS involved, just the physical manipulation of the keypad. Is this a bad connection, failing chip, bios or other software issue?

Answer:Unresponsive keypad/mousepad on Satellite 1110

Are you sure that the touchpad is enabled?
Check it using the Fn + F9 key combination. If this combination would not function, try to find the on/off functionality in the control panel -> mouse
By the way; did you test if the touchpad driver reinstallation would help to solve this?

my Toshiba Satellite 1110 - Z14 notebook has developed a fault which means it keeps
cutting out leaving a blank screen. If I open and shut it quickly it comes back for while and then goes again. It is uneconomical to repair and I have connected another monitor and now I am fine. I would like to remove the the lid/screen and am finding it difficult.

I removed the two screws but still could not remove it, the 2 hinges dont seem to move--can anybody help ?

Answer:Removing closing lid/screen on my Satellite 1110-Z14

To remove the display assembly, follow the steps

1. Remove two screws from the rear panel securing the strip cover
2. Open the display panel fully so that it is lying flat
3. Remove the strip cover by lifting from the left edge
4. Remove the following screws securing the display assembly:
- Two screws securing the hinges
- One screw securing the right hinge bracket
- One screw securing the left hinge bracket
- One screw securing the display cable
5. Disconnect the display cable by pulling up on the attached cord.
6. Open the display assembly so that it is perpendicular to the computer and lift off.

Good luck and be careful.

I am looking for a new DVD/CDRW combo drive for the Satellite 1110-Z20.
Which firmware is needed?
Which drive do you recommend?
Is it easy to replace?
Thanks a lot

Answer:New DVD/CDRW Combo Drive for Satellite 1110 - Z20

Why you ask for the firmware?? I don?t think that the drive firmware has something to do with the drive compatibility.
Fact is that not every drive will run on the notebook because of the tricky master/slave and c-sel settings.

On the drives for desktop PC you can change these settings by changing the jumper but on the notebook drives it?s not possible to change the settings.

In my user manual I have found the compatible drive for my notebook. Maybe it?s also listed in you user manual.
If not so contact the Toshiba service partner in your country to order the compatible and supported drive. The guys can give you a exactly info about the supported drive.

I would like to upgrade the memory in my Satellite 1110-Z15 laptop and have been trying to find a list of approved memory manufacturers from toshiba, with no luck.

Does anyone know of any approved manufacturers for toshiba laptops as i cannot find the type of memory required on the toshiba electronic components site?

Answer:Memory expansion for Satellite 1110-Z15 laptop

Hello Sherbert

I have found information that your notebook can handle with 512 Mb max. I suppose that your unit has 256 MB already. You can use second 256 MB module and put it in a second slot.

Part number for 256 MB memory module is PA3127U-1M25.

I have had to replace my hard drive after failure but cannot install WXP (Home) from the recovery CD. I have followed the instructions on the CD case but nothing happens, just a flashing cursor on the top left of the screen. If I try installing XP from a disc (which I cannot complete because it is already registered) then the installation begins as it should. A windows 2000 disc also installs successfully.

I realize that it could be the disc itself but it does seem the disc is not bootable. I shall be grateful for suggestions.

Answer:Cannot install OS using Product Recovery CD-ROM on Satellite 1110

Hello Simon

Delivered recovery CD is definitely bootable. If I am remembering well you should have 2 recovery CDs (1/2 and 2/2). It sounds stupid but you can try to start installations procedure using CD 2/2. Few months ago I have read one topic where one forum member reported about wrong CD labeling.

Anyway to cut a long story short i tried to rebuild the system using a windows xp version which was succesful, problem is i have now found the original recovery discs, but without the use of the inboard cd drive i have resorted to using a freecom external cd drive,i hold down the c key on boot, but nothing is happening, can anyone help urgently
PS: I made the changes in Bios to boot from the cd drive

Answer:Satellite 1110-Z15: problem with Recovery-CD and DVD-drive

Hi nichollsr,

in our company we also have 2 Satellite 1110-Z15 and there is a tricky hint for recovery.

Toshiba had made a small mistake and printed the false order onto the CDs. You have only do change the order of the Recovery CDs. No. 1 is No. 2 and vice versa.

Insert the disk No. 2, hold the "C" key pressed and the recovery should start. If your Notebook doesn't identify the external Freecom CD-Drive try to hold the "U" key for booting from USB.

I have found a FAQ on the Toshiba UK site

You have to click on Support / Download, then to Knowledgebase and search for a FAQ called

There is a detailed explanation about this issue.

I have a toshiba satellite 1110. I recently partitioned the hard drive and have been having problems were it keeps crashing. Is suspect that my ram is too small i only have 128 and it runs on windows XP. However my problem is that when i start up the computer it stops when it gets to a page showing the toshiba logo and i have to press F1 for it to continue and start up.

I have gone to bios and reloaded the default setting
I have reformated the hard drive containing the operating system

But i still have the problem

Please HELP!!!

Answer:Toshiba Satellite 1110: I have to press F1 for it to startup

Toshiba Satellite 1110 Wont boot up without pressing F1!

It could be a Problem with your CMOS battery which is the date/time battery for the BIOS to keep the date/time correct. I had an Iridium Starbook 200 Notebook and it had the same problem and what I usually did was go into the BIOS and reset the clock and save the changes and it would be fine afterwards but I dont know if you are experiencing the same problem. I too have a Toshiba Satellite 1110 Laptop but I have no problems with it!

The spare parts cost more than 300EUR (by Toshiba Servicepartner), would give it the possibilities of a "fair-trading" completion.

In my opinion you can check in the web for cheaper parts or a second hand parts.
Furthermore the other possibility is Ebay.

I wonder why you want to disassemble the whole notebook to upgrade the HDD? ?:|

This notebook is an oldie but I?ve found some useful details about this series.

It looks like the notebook?s HDD bay can be reached from the notebooks? bottom.
There should be a HDD slot which is secured with a plastic cover.

I assume the cover is fixed only with one screw (maybe two screws). Remove the screw and then you should be able to remove the HDD bay cover.

As you see you don?t need to disassemble the notebook. You need to remove only one screw ;)

Best regards

Probably just the ?mountings? must be right placed.

I have reformatted the hard drive a few times on my Satellite 1110. The laptop is also now running at about 1/4 of the normal speed at best.

Answer:Satellite 1110: HDD slow: Is this due to repeated reformatting

I don't think that your notebook runs slowly because of the HDD formatting.
I don't know which applications you have installed but generally the OS runs slowly because of many processes which are running in the background.

You can try to run the defragmentation on the HDD. This procedure arranges the files on the HDD. Additional you can check the task manager for the background processes. Also Antivirus applications which are running on the OS could make the OS slowly.

I have a satellite 1110
Connecting a second display monitor - does not work

Tried all normal things - does monitor work? Yes etc
I am running XP professional could this be corrupt or is it more likely to do with my laptop

please someone help - new monitor for Christmas - just cant get it to work

Answer:Satellite 1110: Secondary display does not work

Hello Nick

According to your description you can not write that the second display doesn?t work. Obviously you have activated the option called ?Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor?. In this case you can remove all windows from the notebook display to external monitor.

If you work with more different windows on this way your work will be more comfortable. I presume that you don?t want this and it will be interesting to know how you want to use secondary display:
- just secondary display
- both but with the same view?

Remove extended option and use FN+F5 key combination and choose which display you want to use.

If I remember your unit has three USB ports and they are definitely 1.1. There is no way to make them faster. One solution is to use USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.

I have a Satellite 1110 and something has gone wrong with my DVD/CDRW and it will not read any CDs. It is reported as a MAT****A UJDA730 DVD/CDRW but the device status comes up as:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device but the error just returns. I cannot find a driver for it either on the manufacturer's web site or Toshiba's. I don't want to use the Product Recovery CD-ROM as it implies I will lose all software and data on the hard drive.

Firstly you don?t any driver for the CD/DVD drive. The drive uses the standard Windows OS driver and it?s not necessary to install it additional.

We have several laptops from the 1110 series (Z14 and Z20) and one of them refuses to start up properly. Everything works perfectly for 12 seconds and then it powers itself down. Every time at exactly 12 seconds.

Does anyone have any suggestion where I should start looking?

I have already replaced everything that comes loose (up to the CPU), but without any result. It seems to be something inside the BTK20 motherboard.

Answer:Satellite 1110 series only works for 12 seconds, then powers down

Seems so? if you have replaced the common parts like RAM, HDD and the CPU then the last part would be the motherboard?

But what do you think about an overheating issue?
I mean the notebook could shut down because of the higher temperature?
I would recommend checking this? maybe the thermal grease should be renewed, clean the ventilators and check again?

The CD-Rom player of my Toshiba Satellite 1110-Z12 (bought 01/2003 in Holland) goes completely berserk when I insert a CD that is protected by 'Copy Controlled' (IFPI). And by berserk, I mean it revs up to a incredible spinning speed --very loudly-- and am afraid it will break down.

These are mainly EMI productions like:
- Norah Jones: Feels Like Home
- Joss Stone : The Soul Sessions.

I know those copy protection systems may never interrupt or damage the usage on CD players (standalone or computer).

How can this be fixed? I never found firmware upgrades for the CD player on the Toshiba site.

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite 1110 laptop. Everything works well apart from the hard drive, which frequently spins down after only 30 seconds of inactivity regardless of the Power Management settings. After a short while the HDD must spin back up, which causes a 2 second pause in whatever I'm doing. This can get quite annoying especially when the pauses occur when typing or flicking through menus (not to mention playing DVDs). This can occur dozens of times a day.

All settings in PM are set to never switch off the HDD. I've tried uninstalling Toshiba's PM software and used WinXP Home's but this made no difference. It also makes no difference if the machine is clean from a fresh install from the recovery CDs, or running with Service Pack 1a and all the latest drivers and updates.

There are no PM settings in the BIOS.

The spin up/down problem is more likely to happen when running the machine on battery power, or after bringing it home and running it on AC while the battery is charging. Even after the battery is full the HDD will keep spinning down. The spin up/down problem occurs for 2 or 3 days but then the next day may be fine with no occurences. I can't pick a pattern to it.

Toshiba tech support and technicians in Australia first claimed the problem didn't exist (it doesn't always happen, therefore demonstrations are a bit difficult), and later when they did witness the problem they just installed a new BIOS (which was alr... Read more

I would like to upgrade the standard HGST HDD to a faster Seagate SSHD, and the problem is that in this model L50-A-19N there is no HDD cover, the whole laptop bottom must be removed like in this Link: [Video|]

My question is can I upgrade the Disk by Myself and if not what can I do to replace the Disk not losing the warranty. I read the manual for this model and there is nothing about HDD upgrades there.

Answer:Satellite L50-A-19N HDD upgrade question

Usually on most notebook models HDD is placed at the bottom and access to it is not complicated. As you can see on your notebook model it is not so easy and HDD exchange is not supported. With other words it should not be done by notebook owner.

Valid warranty is very important so please don't do anything on your own. HDD exchange in your case can be done by authorized service provider. If they do this warranty will not be cancelled.

Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. Addresses and phone numbers you can find on

Good luck

I want to upgrade my notebook with a new CPU.
The (hardware) socket ist a 479. But when I ask Intel about my current CPU, it tells my that it is a 478.
The Chipset is an Intel 852/855 GM/GME, after Intel ChipsetUtility.

I am a little confused about the different data about the socket.
With CPUs will fit?

Answer:Satellite A10: CPU Upgrade question

I?m not sure about the CPU socket in the Satellite A10 but I use the tool called ?Everest home edition? and this tool provides all necessary information about the kind of socket and another important CPU info.

But as far as I know the Satellite A10 and Pro A10 was delivered with different hardware specifications and different CPU?s.
It seems the Intel Pentium 4-M and the Mobile Intel Celeron CPU are compatible:

Mobile Intel Pentium 4-M model
A 1.80/1.90/2.00/2.20GHz Pentium 4 processor with a 1.80/1.90/2.00/2.20/1.20GHz internal clock, 400MHz bus and 1.30/1.20V core operation
Mobile Intel Celeron model
A 1.80/2.00/2.20GHz Celeron processor with a 1.80/2.00/2.20GHz internal clock, 400MHz bus and 1.30V core operation

But I really don?t recommend the CPU upgrade.
As far as I know the microcode must be updated after the CPU and motherboard replacement. If you don?t update the microcode the CPU will run only at 600Mhz.

Be careful!

I am having a Toshiba Satellite A60 S-131 bought 2 years ago.
I want to know whether it is possible for me to upgrade the 40GB HDD to a higher capacity HDD(internal) and to upgrade my RAM from 512MB to higher.

Also I had already inserted a 256MB DDR RAM in the empty memory slot almost 1 year ago.

Help will be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite A60-131: Question about HDD and RAM upgrade

Hi Pranjal,

You can definitley upgrade your hard drive to a larger capacity version. You should find that an 80Gb or 100Gb will work just fine. You will need to make sure that you obtain a new drive with the same physical characteristics as you existing one. The following link will help you to remove the hard drive.

You may also wish to get a new hard drive with a faster rotational speed (5400rpm or even 7200rpm).

I believe the maximum RAM for the A60 is 1.25Gb which comprises 1 X fixed module (I presume yours is 256Mb which means that you can install one further module of up to 1Gb capacity. RAM modules are available in 256Mb, 512Mb, and 1Gb capacities.

You can use only the CPUs which are supported by chipset and BIOS.
As far as I know the Satellite L40/EQUIUM L40/Satellite Pro L40/Satellite L45 computer is equipped with an Intel Pentium Duo Processor or Intel Celeron M Processor.

These processors were built in:

Pentium Duo Processor (533MHz) 1.6GHz (T2060) /1.73GHz (T2080)/1.86GHz (T2090)/1.86GHz (T2130)

Celeron M Processor (533MHz) 1.73GHz (430) /1.86GHz

I think you can use these CPUs.

I have found out how easy it is to remove the current DVD Writer on my Satellite S70-A (10 seconds) so no problems there.

I see that there is a small lug at the back of the writer allowing the writer to be locked in place by the small bolt that holds the HDD/RAM cover in place

Can I buy a Blu Ray player which has this lug already fitted or I can I fit the lug afterwards?

Can anyone suggest a suitable Blu Ray player to buy as a direct replacement.

Answer:Question about Blu-ray upgrade on Satellite S70-A

Most of S70-A notebooks are offered with DVD-multi optical disc drives. Just few of them are offered with 9.5MM BD-ROM. Unfortunately I don't know which model of BD-ROM is this exactly.
It is not easy to find any information which model can be used on your machine.

I’m not 100% sure but it could be UJ162 UJ-162.

Let’s see if someone else can find exact info about that.

Anyway, in worst case you can order it and test it. if there is some problem simply send it back.

Hello, just wanted to update my laptop, and just interesting. Is this laptop supporting 160 gb ?
Maybe even, what the biggest HDD support this computer ?
Because i am thinking on 120gb or better 160gb... And dunno what to do :)
Satellite A10...
Thanks for any advices

Answer:Question about HDD-upgrade on a Satellite A10

Hey there,

I think you should try it, because I think that machine was shipped with a maximum of 80GB, but I am not sure. You have the following options:

1. Buy a HDD with about 120GB. Test it, you cannot damage anything. If the drive would not be recognized then bring it back to the shop and try a HDD with less memory (100GB). Repeat the procedure, if the drive was recognized, hold it. :)
2. Buy a 80GB HDD, which is known to work in that machine. Thats the "secure" way.
3. Do nothing and buy a external USB-HDD. ;)

I hope I could give you some thoughts on your way.

I've recovered my son's old A40 from Virus and spyware infections. Now I want to upgrade.

At present, I still have the old Bios and a 30GB 4200RPM IDE disk. (model n PSA45E-007N1-EN)
Is it like the A10 that accepts maximum 60GB drive or can I go bigger ?

One supplier suggests I stay at 4200RPM but to ask Toshiba what they recommend, so far no reply.
Any suggestions ?

Many thanks

Answer:Satellite A40: Question about HDD upgrade

How did you try to ask Toshiba??? As far as I know you can ask the authorized service provider in your country for information but not a Toshiba directly.

However, I have investigated a little bit here in the forum and found this thread:

and this one

It seems there are no official informations but the user ?henrivdw? has upgraded the A30 (similar to A40) with the 80GB HDD successfully.

Good luck

Hi there people.

I have upgraded the memory on my gf's quite old a60 laptop, but want to upgrade the cpu as well now as she is running the celeron 2.8.
The laptop manual says i can have the followng cpu's:

Intel celeron up to 2.8ghz (which i currently have)
Mobile intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.06 ghz
Mobile intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.2 ghz supporting htt

other processors may be introduced and a level 2 cache from 128kb to 1mb

I am trying to work out whether this means i can have the northwood 130nm 3.2ghz or whether i can have the prescott 90nm 3.2ghz.

If I could have the prescott, would I not be able to get the 3.46 ghz prescott?
As these cpus are quite hard to find, i am just checking to see if i can have any of these..., also how easy is it to get in and change the chip inside the laptop :D

While I am asking, is it worth upgrading the hard drive from 40gb 4200 rpm to a 7200 rpm one?

Many thanks for your time people

Answer:Satellite A60 - CPU upgrade question

I wouldn't install a Prescott, they get very hot! The cooling fan may not be able to keep the CPU cool.

Installing a Northwood would be the best option. Looking in google, it appears this laptop can definitely accept Northwood CPU's.

The jump from a Celeron to a Northwood is a big step. But from Northwood to Prescott is only a small step.

I would choose this one:

As for the HDD, 7200RPM drives can get hot and are noisy, and are not that much faster than a 5400RPM drive. A 5400RPM HDD would be the smart choice.

I want a bigger hard drive but xp home edition is pre installed. If i change the hdd i dont think the recovery disk would work to re install xp. How do i do this without buying a new version of windows? Oh it is a notebook satellite pro spa10.

Answer:Satellite Pro A10: Question about HDD upgrade

Sorry but why you suggest the Recovery CD will not recognize the new HDD?
Fact is if the BIOS will recognize the new HDD then you will not have any problems with recovering and the OS installation.

If you want to upgrade the HDD you have to use an compatible one. Then simply boot-up from the recovery CD and the OS will install on the new HD drive.

My Satellite A30-104 has recently come to the end of its warranty, and having had to open up the heatsink for cleaning and seeing that the CPU was accessible, I wonder if there is any (likely) scope for upgrading it.

The processor is a Celeron (Northwood) 2.6GHz. I'm not looking for more grunt, I'd prefer a lower-power chip, though the much larger L2 cache of a Pentium 4 is also desirable. I'd be very grateful if anyone could advise whether any upgrades are likely available, and if so which chips would be appropriate? If I can give any more useful spec information, please ask.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite A30-104?

Generally it?s not advisable to upgrade the CPU on the notebooks because nobody can say if the notebook will run properly and stable after the upgrade.
The heat and high temperature inside the notebook could be a serious problem.

Anyway, I think the notebook supports an Intel 852GME chipset.

The Intel 852GME chipset is optimized for the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor, features a 533 MHz system bus and up to 2 GB of high-speed DDR 333/266/200 memory.

But I?m not sure about the socket? it?s either 479 or 478

Helo everybody,
I need a major upgrade so i wanted to know if it's posssible to upgrade the processor. I am already playing Doom 3 at ulra high with 4X Ati, and 1024X768.
Giving me 46 fps,with 2gb ddr 533.

Can i upgrade the Satellite P100-188 T2400 processor to T2500 or T2600 and can i use ddr2 667mhz Ram?

Any suggestions how much performance increases if you upgrade hdd from 5400rpm to 7200 with 8mb cache?

Answer:Satellite P100-188: Question about Ram and CPU upgrade

The CPU can not be replaced. But you can extend the memory with those modules:
PA3499U-1M25(DDR2-667 256MB Memory Kit)
PA3511U-1M51(DDR2-667 512MB Memory Kit)
PA3512U-1M1G(DDR2-667 1GB Memory Kit)
PA3513U-1M2G(DDR2-667 2GB Memory Kit)

DDR2-533 256MB (PA3389U-2M25)
DDR2-533 512MB (PA3412U-2M51)
DDR2-533 1GB (PA3411U-2M1G)

The max memory that you can use on this unit is 4GB.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-138

Parts no :psls9e-00u00wg3
Serial: no:1a511094k

The processor i have now is the i3 330

I want to upgrade to i7
Is this possible and can you link me where to buy the right one that is fitting to my laptop

Answer:Satellite L505-138 - CPU upgrade question

> Is this possible?
Maybe, in case the new CPU would be supported by chipset and BIOS, you?ve got good chances to upgrade the CPU.
But Toshiba as well as other notebook manufacturers don?t support such upgrade and therefore everything you do is your own risk!

First of all I would recommend you to get details about your chipset. On Intel ARK page you could check what CPUs would be supported by this chipset.
Fact is that this notebook series were equipped with the Intel Dual Core CPUs belonging to the Intel Arrandale CPU family. In case you want really try an new CPU, I would suggest you to choose one from this family.

But note: even if chipset would support new CPU, the BIOS might be one of the parts causing troubles. Unfortunately I did not find any information what CPUs might be supported by BIOS

Who are you? Ttime for some upgades for this great laptop and some few questions and I will be pleased to answer to me.

1.Is there any empty space to install a second hard drive SSD?

2.If there is not can I put off the DVD hard drive and in the empry space to fit a ssd drive? I will need something like that? ----> fb4d
This is an adapter.

3.How much max memory RAM support the Satellite L500D? I have already installed 2GB and I have an extra socket and I want to install a single 4GB RAM and total 6GB RAM

Its sounds this idea good to you? Thank you very much and have a nice day

Answer:Satellite L500D - SSD and RAM upgrade question

As you can see on bottom side of the notebook it doesn?t support a second HDD because there is no second HDD bay on bottom side.
The adapter that you posted is not an official one so nobody can say if it?s compatible part or not. As far as I know for Satellite notebooks there is no CD/DVD bay adapter but you can ask an authorized service provider for further details.

The maximum RAM capacity is depending on your exact notebook model. L500D was delivered with different hardware so you must post your exact notebook model number.

Just want to know, can i change my 250GB, 8MB, 5400rpm SATA HDD in my laptop with this one
HDD 500.0 GB WESTERN DIGITAL Scorpio Blue 5000BEVT, SATA, 8MB c., 5400 rpm

Will it work, or should i better ask, will my laptop recognize it??

Answer:Re: Satellite A300-1mt - HDD upgrade question

I think the notebooks BIOS should recognize the new HDD.
The new HDD is a SATA HDD and this is most important thing.

You need a SATA 2.5? HDD!
The size and the speed are not really important because the new SATA controller should handle such HDD trouble free.

Thank you

Answer:Question about HDD upgrade on Satellite Pro U200-128

Hi there,

yes it?s possible to upgrade to 250GB since that size probably the chipset (ICH7-M) can handle. Feel free to put such big drive in your machine and be happy. :)

If you need more information on your chipset then check this site:

Hello Thomas

Your notebook has an Intel Dual Core T3400 processor and 667Mhz FSB and 1MB cache only. And you are in Vista 32 bit. Your DDRII RAM is of 800 MHz. All this does not allow you to speed up your system.

If you want to upgrade to speed up your system, you need:
- Either change your processor by a more powerful dual-core (1066 MHz FSB as P300-20E eg with a 3MB cache).
- Or place your system on a 250 GB SSD drive (I recommend the Samsung 850 EVO 250 Gb), the migration of your HDD to the SSD software is included in the Samsung box). Modified the price is less than € 100.

I think for a beginner computer the most effective solution is the latter, especially since it is not easy to find a P8600 processor to replace your T3400.

Take the opportunity to buy a dry air bomb to remove the dust from the ventilation of your laptop.

Good luck and good Christmas holidays.

Answer:Question about RAM upgrade on Satellite U400-138

In my opinion you should follow Toshiba and not Intel specification. Toshiba?s info is based on own tests and facts.
So, following Toshiba specification for GM45 Chipset there is clearly written:

Min(on board)/Max Capacity - DDR2 800MHz 0MB/8GB max
Type of Expansion Memory - DDR2 800MHz 1GB/2GB/4GB
Module type - SO-DIMM

So if Toshiba write about 800 MHz modules you should use them and not faster modules.
You can maybe use faster too but they will not work with maximum speed but will goes down to 800 MHz only.

If you want to use max RAM amount use recommended and tested 2 x 2GB DDR2-800 (PA3669U-1M2G).
As compatible RAM it is listed 4GB DDR2-800 (PA3670U-1M4G).

I have Toshiba Satellite L300-1A3.
Its performance good.
But the futre if i change cpu, how is supported Core2Duo series?

Thank you very much.

Answer:Satellite L300-1A3 - CPU upgrade question

The CPU upgrade is not supported by Toshiba and nearly all other notebook manufacturers.
Generally you should know that the notebooks components like CPU or GPU are not upgradeable.

In most cases the graphic card is soldered on motherboard. The CPU upgrade is more complicated and tricky because of different reasons.
The main reason would be the heat dissipation. The stronger CPU produces more warmness which can affect the notebook functionality.
In other case the CPU could be not supported by BIOS and in worst case the notebook would not boot up?.

So if you want to upgrade the computer components in the future with new CPU or better graphic chip then you shouldn?t buy a notebook but a desktop PC!

That?s my personal opinion

Hi all,

I am looking for some information on how to upgrade the RAM for my SATELLITE S3000-X4 (120MB RAM, 14GB HD I think!). Heres a little background...

This laptop is approx 5 years old, and I am hoping to speed it up a little. I dont not want to buy a new computer as it generally serves my needs.

I have cleared out my hard drive of unwanted programs and files. And I have run Jv16 Power Tools to clean the registry and minimise start up processes.

It is still a little slow and so I am considering upgrading the RAM as I believe I can do this for around ?50. My questions are:

What type of RAM upgrade should I look at buying? (Does this laptop have 2 RAM 'plug ins' or just one?)
What size of RAM upgrade is the maximum a S3000-X4 could cope with?
Could a novice like myself fit the upgrade DIY style?!

Thanks for any help you can offer!!

Answer:Satellite 3000-X4: Question about RAM upgrade

Hi Gabrielle

It is pretty old unit. I have searched some info but unfortunately I didn?t find much. The unit can use 512 MB of RAM and you can use two memory modules. I am not 100% sure but I think you can use module with follow part number PA3086U-1M25.

The unit is not known to me but please check bottom side. On most units there you can find memory cover.

Hi, new to this forum.
I tried to find a direct contact to ask this, but could not locate any email options on the website, only phone numbers, which aren't an option right now as I have other obligations during business hours at the moment.

I'm a computer technician of 30 years and have today purchased a new Satellite Pro R50-C PS566A-004001 with an i7-5500U, 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD Notebook for a customer of mine. He has requested an additional 8GB of RAM, which I purchased at the same time from my wholesaler. On opening the box I discovered there is no access to the memory slots or the Hard Drive. The Toshiba Website states in the specs that the RAM is expandable to 16GB, but it appears the back cover has to be fully removed to gain access. I would like to check if I remove the back cover will this void the warranty. The specifications on the Toshiba website do not state that it is not user accessible to change the RAM, where as from the research I did for the customer, other cheaper models do state this. I have sold Toshiba and other brands Notebooks in the past and have always ensured that the specifications for the laptop did not say the RAM was non user accessible, and as such that I would be able to upgrade the RAM as customers request.

As above, I just wish to check that upgrading the RAM on this laptop will not void the Toshiba warranty, since the specifications do state that the laptop is expandable to 16GB of RAM, and do not state that it is not user accessible/u... Read more

If I upgrade my Satellite A40 processor to hyper threading technology to 3.00Ghz, the problem s does not pass my chipset to hypo threading, should I have a problem to my notebook conditions?.......

Answer:Satellite A40 - question about processor upgrade

If you open your notebook and make something on your own you will lose your warranty.

Just for info; the processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturisation and heat dissipation. As far as I know because of this connection method the CPU upgrade is not possible.

Good luck!

2- what's the maximum Ram Sizes & Busses that can my laptop deal with it ?

Message was edited by: Matrix Lover

Answer:Satellite A110-195 Ram upgrade question

What does the user manual say about the RAM upgrade?
Usually such info is always mentioned in user manuals?

But generally you have to know that RAM upgrade depends on the chipset.
The chipset FSB (front side buss) is important for RAM speed.
If the FSB supports only 533Mhz then your RAM modules would run max with 533Mhz speed even than the RAM modules would support a faster speed; ie 667Mhz.

ich have a Satellite Pro 2100 with a harddrive capacity of 40GB. Now I want wo upgrate it with a 100GB or 120GB HDD. Is it supported? Where is the upper limit of supported capacity? Is there something I have to look out? Are there special attributes which I have to look for?

forward thanks for your support

Answer:Satellite Pro 2100: Question about HDD Upgrade

It's very improbable that the 100 or 120GB HDD will work.
I assume the BIOS will not recognize these HDDs.
I don't found any officials documents about the supported HDDs but I think the 60GB HDD is biggest HDD which would works on the Satellite Pro 2100.
