Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100-603

Question: Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100-603

The user guide doesn't spell out the differences between the S5100-201 and S5100-603 models.
I can work out they are different speeds, memory and hard disk size but what about the internal bits?

I have a broken -603 model with a power control fault. Does anyone know if the systemboard from a -201 model will fit into the -603 unit?

Preferred Solution: Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100-603

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100-603

I am not technician but I have found info that those units have different graphic card and both can not handle with max RAM.

Satellite 5100-201:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 32 MB
- can handle with max 512 MB RAM

Satellite 5100-603:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 64 MB
- can handle with max 1024 MB RAM

I am not 100% sure but if you exchange the whole Mb with all hardware components I believe that other peripheral devices should work well but I don?t know how it will work with BIOS. Maybe the DMI must be rewritten.

On this forum there are few guys with very good knowledge and I hope some of them will post here and say more about that.

I had to reinstall my notebook with the original recovery CD
on Windows XP Home. I've run the latest updates.

Since I've used several USB devices, the system tells me that
I have to connect that device to a USB 2.0 port to get fastest

I'm pretty sure I've never had these messages before.

Doesn't my 5100-603 support Enhanced USB?

Which drivers do I have to download and where?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:USB 2.0 on Satellite 5100-603?

Hey Oliver

Such messages are nothing unusual if you connect the high-speed USB 2.0 devices to a notebook with USB 1.1 ports.
Yes, as far as I know the Satellite 5100-603 supports only the USB 1.1 ports and not the USB 2.0
This is a notebook hardware limitation and it cannot be upgraded with any drivers.

I assume you didn?t get any messages in the past because the updates and Microsoft QFE was not installed.
Anyway, nothing wrong with you unit.

i know that is is a silly question ..but i really like my laptop alot and i want it to stay i get annoyed by small silly stuff like the problem i wrote ..
so if anyone can please help me ..i would be very greatfull thaaaaaaaaaanx

Answer:Question about Satellite 5100

Hello Meisoon

As far as I know under ?Toshiba controls properties? you can set what the SubLCD should show. It can be set to clock or own string. It is not known to me that you can use two different strings and that they can be displayed separately depending on switching on or off.

If you find out how it works please write again.

Instruction for Satellite 5100-503 says that max. RAM capacity this notebook can works is 512 MB. This is strange for me. Why I can't upgrade memory in my notebook, this is efficency but 512 MB is too less for me. I use Windows XP Prof. with many programs, that's why I need more memory. Additional distributor of Toshiba notebooks in my country clamis that this model can works with 1GB RAM. I do not really know who has right. Help me, please.

I have a satellite 5100-201 and yesterday evening Ad-Watch kept displaying "Registry modification detected" with the choice of ALLOW or BLOCK, I chose block then after I rebooted all my icons changed to .LNK Can anyone help fix this? I am trying to run a registry programme from a CD to see if that would fix it. I can't run internet or open a CD.
I believe that changing the bios boot sequence the the CD drive would run the registry programme - how can I acces the bios I have tried esc F2 F10 but no luck. Anyway, any fresh thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Answer:.LNK Problem on my Satellite 5100

Hi John,

This seems to be a particular problem with Ad-Watch and I have found a possible fix on the following web-site :-

Select 'File Associations' from the options under 'Win XP Fixes' and then download the '.exe' zip file. Note the use of task manager to start the RegEdit program.

I have a satellite 5100 which when I try to boot it hangs on the red toshiba screen and the small blue window at the front shows HDDPassword= I have never set a password for this. I have tried disconnecting all power sources but still no further forward any suggestions?

Answer:Satellite 5100 HDD Password

if there's really a HDD password set, it's very bad, because there's no way to remove it.

But maybe it's just some kind of failure. Try to reinstall the system or get access to the HDD from another computer.

Maximum capacity of a CD in the combo DVD reader/CD of the Satellite 5100-503 seems to be 703Mb. Is there any solution to burn 800 Mb/90 minutes CDs ?

Answer:satellite 5100-503: burning a 800 Mb CD-Rom

do you want to burn a real 800MB CD-ROM or do you want to overwrite it?

Did you checked if a new firmware is available?

My satellite had some coke for the first time, didn't like it. Got it cleaned but still warms up and shuts down. If anyone has a faulty 5100-503 with presumably ok motherboard, I'd like to bid for that.

Answer:Need motherboard for Satellite 5100-503

The new motherboard is very expensive. Motherboard and display are the most expansive notebook parts!!!
I think it make no sense to buy a new board for this oldie!
If you want you can order it from the Toshiba authorizes service provider?

But I would recommend buying a second hand Satellite 5100 or board from the Ebay.

I've recently had installed satellite broadband via the Ipstar terminal. This terminal would serve well as an air raid warning siren, the noise the fan makes. There are sites selling quiet computer fans however, before I go further, has anyone done this. Put a cooling fan making less racket in the same terminal I mean.

How do I enter the bios on a 5100-501

Answer:satellite 5100-501 bios

Hi jm,

the BIOS of the Satellite 5100-503 could only be changed with the Toshiba HWSetup in the Control panel!

When you press the power button to start the notebook you could only press ESC, when the red Toshiba logo is shown, to set the BIOS to default!

I have a Satellite 5100-503 with a GeForce4 440 Go and I recently installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 as fresh install. I tried to play a game that I had installed and played on the other operating system (XP SP1).

When I tried to run it, it sent me a ?Could not run OpenGL? message. Then I browsed your website for drivers. The only problem was that when I checked your driver archives my model was nowhere to be found.

I checked various other unofficial websites for drivers but again without success. After that I tried models that where close to my model, but they didn?t help me, then I tried various force wares with modded .inf, no success either.

All I?m here to ask you is to please send me the drivers or upload them to the internet for download. The last time (a couple of years ago) when I had installed the OS, I downloaded the drivers from your website and it worked perfectly.
I hope you can answer to my problem as soon as possible.

Also I would like to have all the drivers needed for my laptop, for Windows XP SP2.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Need WXP drivers for Satellite 5100-503

All WXP drivers you can find on Toshiba download page but under option ?Product type? choose ARCHIVE.
Install all stuff and when you are finished check for Windows updates. SP2 will be installed and it should run well.

This notebook is pretty old and tested with SP2. Some strange problems are not known to me. For me it is one of the best Toshiba notebooks.

I have a Satellite 5100-503 notebook, now I bought a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card for an external 60Gb hdd. The problem is that:
a memory key work well with pcmcia card
hdd work slow but well with usb 1.1
hdd is not recognised by pcmcia card

Anyone could help me?

Answer:PCMCIA usb 2.0 problem on my Satellite 5100-503

in my opinion this problem is related to the PCMCIA card driver!

If the PCMCIA card is recognized by the OS and there is no problem in the Device Manager, everything should be ok!

You can write us the PCMCIA card vendor and model name, bt I don't know if somebody could help you!

It will be better to connect the support of the PCMCIA vendor!

My Satellite 5100-503 shows garbled image during startup particularly when the computer is warm.
The sound also breaks.

It was diagnosed as a display card problem. The card has nVidia GeForce4 440 Go chip.
What is the equivalent card available in the market or any reliable source?

Answer:Satellite 5100-503 - I need a new graphic card

As far as I know the graphic card can not be exchanged. It?s soldered on the mainboard and so you need a new mainboard.
Are you sure that is a graphic card issue? Do you have the same issue on an external monitor? Check this!

Maybe the notebook gets to hot so try to clean it with compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust.

Hey all,

I have a HUGE problem with my Satellite 5100-503.

Windows XP is logging on and then it logs off straight away.

I found a fix for this at: [url]{/url}

The problem is I can't boot from a cd because the BIOS is set to boot from the hard-drive first.

I get into the BIOS. I read on a few places on the net that on Satellite 5xxx machines you can only get into the bios through windows!! isn't working so I can't get into the bios. I can't even use the Windows Installation CD when I boot up, because again the HD is set to boot up first.

When I press ESC while turning on the laptop and then press F1 I get the option to load the BIOS defaults. I've done that but the HD is still set to boot up first!!

What can I do....I can't re-install windows or get into regedit to fix the log on/log off problem!!

Answer:Satellite 5100-503: Not possible to boot from CD drive

Hi Jamie,

Normally you can select a boot device selection menu when you power on your notebook. You can do this by holding the F12 key down when you power on. keep it pressed until the notebook beeps or the device selection menu appears.

If this doesn't work then you could try the usual Toshiba short-cut which is to hold the 'C' key down during the power on which should then cause the notebook to boot from the CD drive. Obviously there has to be a bootable CD inserted first.

I have a Satellite 5100-201 P4-M 1.6 Ghz with 30Gb IDE HDD and 1024Mb RAM. I use my "good old" Satellite only for Music (the greatest sound found on notebooks!) but now my HDD has become a bit weak.

So my question is if there's any limitation of HDD-Size for this notebook. I would like to buy a IDE 120GB or 160GB HDD with 5400rpm and 8MB Cache. If that would not be possible I can also take the 80GB HDD (some other threads say it works), but the bigger the better!

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Satellite 5100-201 - Limitation of HDD size

Hi buddy,

I think the maximum HDD capacity would be 120GB because the notebook has a 28bit LBA limitation. That means only HDDs up to 128GB can be used so 120GB would be the maximum. 5400rpm and 8MB cache are ok.

By the way: It?s nice to read that you are still so satisfied with old Satellite 5200 :)

I had recently bought a new HDD due to problems to the previous one, so the hard disk have nothing in it. But when i thought everything was fixed, i have discovered a new problem.
Every time i turn the computer ON an try to access the boot priority to choose the CD-ROM drive (F12) so i can install the system, nothing happens.
I've already tried different combinations, C (to CD-ROM), DEL, F2, F1, ... nothing happens.
There is a weird thing however: if i turn OFF, and then ON again, with Esc key pressed, the LCD ask for password. I don't even remember if i ever set a password... I've tried many letters and words, and 'x' works; then a message appears: Press [F1] key for default setting, i press F1 and the system runs untill it reach the HDD:
Insert System Disk in the Drive
Press any key when ready...
pressing, only repeat the message

If i turn the computer ON without using Esc, and if use Esc when the TOSHIBA logo appears, don't ask for password, just for the message: Press [F1] key for default setting
and everything loops...

The new HDD its a HITACHI 160Gb and i know the problem its not from the disk

I've already did a search and i think its something about the BIOS, but i don't know for sure.
I'd really appreciate any help you could give.

Answer:Satellite 5100-503 BIOS 'locked' maybe

I don't think the 5100 has a BIOS screen. All you can do is reset the defaults.

If its saying "Insert system disk", that means the operating system has not been installed or there is a problem with the boot sector.

I don't know what the max HDD size is for the 5100, but 160GB might be too large. It may be limited to the 128GB LBA48 limitation ( ).

Anyway, holding down 'C' during POST should get it to boot from the CD. Unless the CD Drive is faulty.

I am owner of a Toshiba Satellite 5100-201. The five keys 9-O-L-.-Del on the keyboard do not work. Is it a software problem or a defect of the keyboard controller or a contact problem on the board? Has someone experience with this problem? Can it be a BIOS-problem? I have Bios 1.90.
Can someone help me?

Best regards

Answer:Satellite 5100-201: Five Keys: "9-O-L-.-Del" do not work

in most cases the problem is that there is some dirt on the contacts of the keys.
You should remove them and clean it, and check the connector of the keyboard.
If this doesn't help the keyboard probably is faulty and needs to be replaced.

My disk made some strange noises, maybe it have one foot in the grave...
Have latest bios 1.9. and original disk at 30GB.
Have an Hitachi 40GB I tried with, but notebook did not find it.
So I would like to know what disks and sizes that are supported for that model.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:What HDDs are supported for Satellite 5100-201

Very strange? did you use a compatible 40GB HDD?
In my knowledge the notebook should be able to recognize the 40GB HDD.
As far as I know the 30 GB HDD which was installed is a Toshiba MK3017GAP and the computer supports a 20, 30, 40 or 60 GB HDDs.

I think these HDD should be compatible:
Toshiba HDD2171B 40GB HDD
Toshiba HDD2183B 60GB

PS: The strange noise coming from the HDD could be the ?beginning of the end?
So make a data backup.

I have a Satellite 5100-201.
Recently, a screen problem surfaced: first images outlined get blurred, then stripes appear, usually the screen collapses to provisional modus. I noticed that the notebook gets really hot and I thought this must be a problem of overheating.

I vacuum-cleaned the notebook, I even opened it and checked that the fan turns properly. Afterwards, the notebook worked one time, the fan did run constantly and the notebook did not get heated.

The next day, the problem surfaced again and this time I got even a black screen. Now, the notebook boots normally when I turn it on, but I know that after a while it is gonna get hot again.

Ah, I also updated the driver for the graphic card, but it did not help. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Answer:Satellite 5100-201: overheating after several time

To protect from the overheating the CPU has a n internal temperature sensor. If the computer?s internal temperature rises to a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or the processing speed is lowered. Use the cooling method item of the basic setup in the Toshiba power saver.

Furthermore it is very important that you use the notebook in the right position. The area near to the cooling module grilles must be free because the fan must ?take a breath?.
It?s important for the fresh air circulation.

There it stopped working.
What I did: Closed the notebook after work (everything ok) and leaved it alone for a while. When I opend the notebook again to continue working nothing happend.
Only the small frontdisplay showed me a spinning CD (no CD inserted) and the battery status display. After pressing the on-button the on-sign appeared but nothing happened again. Pressing the button again (for some seconds) made the on-sign dissapear. No display, no fan, no harddisk noise in any case (ono/off). Inserting an audio CD and pessing the play-button works! Soundsystem is working well.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?
any questions? more infos necessary? please ask!

did you tried to remove the battery pack for about 5 to 10 minutes! It seems that the notebook can't start the hibernation file to boot windows. You can also try to push the start button for 5 seconds.

I was given an I-pod for Christmas but when I connect it up am told that I need a Hi-Speed USB port which this model doesn't feature. Message comes up saying that I need to get a Hi-Speed USB Host Controller - any advice on which would be the best one for the job gratefully received.

Answer:I need a Hi-Speed USB port on Satellite 5100-503

I am not sure if your Laptop supports USB version 2.0. Sometimes there are USB 1.0 AND USB 2.0 ports available on notebooks. Try to change to a different port and see if the "Hi speed USB..." message will show up again.

In case your Laptop is only fitted with USB 1.0 ports, then you can still use your I-pod on those USB ports. The only disadvantage is the slow speed for the File-transfer and the message that pops up telling you "This device can run faster...blablabla". If you can live with this, your problem is solved.

A better solution would be to buy a USB 2.0 adaptor for PCMCIA. These adaptors plug on the side of your notebook and provide you two or four additional USB 2.0 ports. You can find such an adaptor in every proper computershop or through ebay:

As I said, I am NOT sure if your Laptop has USB2.0 support. Cause if it does, then you might be missing some drivers.

Good luck

My harddisk in my Satellite 5100 broke down and I want to change it.

According to various messages in the forum, it is not possible to boot the 5100 from a CD when there is a (new) harddisk in the machine. And the only way to change the boot sequence is via Windows - which does not work anymore - there is no other way to change BIOS parameters than inside Windows.

I have looked in the manual - I cannot find any mentioning of pressing F12 or C or any other combination to change boot sequence (I have of course tried nevertheless to no avail). The only thing one I have found possible is to press ESC + F1 to _restore_ default BIOS settings. And powering up pressing the key left of the space bar gives me the possibility of flashing a new BIOS.

Is it really so? Since that would mean I'm stuck. And in that case I'll simply save the money for the new harddisk and throw out my laptop... (and probably by another brand next time - but I sincerely hope it isn't so...)

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Answer:Satellite 5100-503: Changing HDD and booting questions

Oookay. So after pressing F12 at boot time I have to use the _cursor_ keys to move the thin line that looked like an error symbol beneath the graphical symbols, I should have guessed that...

Anyway. I'm now booting from the CD and I'm installing windows on my new HDD, happy happy.

a friend of mine has ruined his Toshiba Satellite 5100.
He erased all partition on the hard drive while the laptop still using the default setting,
so I couldn't boot from cd or enter the BIOS.
Is there any solution for this??

Answer:Can not enter BIOS or boot from CD - Satellite 5100

Hi Veenone,

Erasing the partition on the hard drive would have the same effect as formatting, but you should still be able to boot as far as loading the BIOS (this is normally where the Toshiba screen appears with the boot options), before you see an error along the lines of "HDD:0 .....", although this error may be different according to boot options etc.

You should be able to re-install Windows from a recovery CD.

Could you tell us any error messages you are seeing or any other screens or options etc?

When you bought your Satellite notebook didn?t you get a remote control? If not then the unit is not prepared to use remote control. You can also check the user?s manuals.

As far as I know all units that have remote control have installed a small application called ?Controls?. Check in control panel if you can find something like that.

I once had downloaded a whole bunch of fixes for the Satellite 5100, but through bad circumstance I lost the files.

When I search for Satellite 5100 fixes now I can find only ONE for the Bluetooth stack. The whole download search hasn?t been really working for YEARS now. Thanks a lot,

Answer:PCMCIA Low Level Control - Satellite 5100

In my opinion the only thing that you can do is BIOS settings check but I am not sure if you can do it on this unit. If this not help than I don?t believe that you will be able to control it on low level with this unit.

I have a bit of trouble with CDRW/DVD drive for Toshiba Sat 5100-503. It writes about 1 in 5 CDRs and only if I write < 400MB of data. I tried cleaning the lens - no help. Tried both Win XP writing software and NERO - no difference.
Do you know if I can replace the drive for a DVD rewriter? And if yes - what model?

Answer:Need suggestion about optical drive for Satellite 5100-503

Hi Piotr,

You can replace your CD re-writer with vurtually any DVD burner that is the same physical size, but you will need to make sure that the new burner has a similar configuration set-up to your current drive.

Typically the drive will be configured as Master, Slave or Cable Select (Csel), by the manufacturer and this must match the configuration of your current drive. One of the Nero tools will show you how the current drive is configured.

Unfortunately, most retailers do not show the configuration and with the slim-line drives there are no dip switches which you can use to change it.

Hi there!
I own a 5 years old Sat. 5100-201 which worked just fine until today.
Now I experiance problems with the graphic card as I guess, the screen is flickering and distorted and then I mosztly get a blue screen which tells that the graphic
card drivers is running into a loop.

I have a dual boot system, so I checked it on both win xp installations and it's the same problem on both, so it seems to be a real hardware prob.!
So I think I have a graphic card problem, but as far as I know, the chip is fixed on the motherboard and is not replacable, is that right?
Is there any workaround which I can do to make sure what the problem is?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello out there,
this is a german calling...
I need an update for the graphic driver of a laptop toshiba satellite 5100-503, the nvidia geforce4 440 Go, which you cannot get on the nvidia site, where are no mobile systems to get.
My Laptop is quite slow. I just want to accelerate its performance.
Thanks outthere

Answer:Driver update for Satellite 5100-503 with NVIDIA geforce4 440 Go

This old notebook model is definitely not supported anymore and on Toshiba support page you cannot find any update. What you can do is to search around to find notebook with the same graphic card but maybe with newer driver and try to install it.

Can you please tell us why you need more graphic performance? For gaming?

I have a Toshiba S5100 201 which performed well and the very annoying problem with the Nvidia graphics driver. After much searching on the web, it would appear that a fix to the problem has not been found. If anyone has had better luck than me, please post a message.

When reporting the error to Microsoft an automatic replies states that there are no reported faults, therefore no solution. I searched the Toshiba website and they only have the original driver from 2002.

There are many posts concerning graphics problems with my particular model and several other Toshiba models but no word from Toshiba or Nvidia on the subject. This problem means that I have to shutdown and reboot many times, and often it just packs up without any notice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Toshiba and Nvidia are also included in this request.

Ps I have tried a couple of drivers and am currently using GeForce 4 440

Answer:Nvidia graphics driver problem on my Satellite 5100

Hi John

Usually you should always use the Toshiba graphic driver because only these drivers are designed for the notebook usage. The NVIDIA graphic driver you can use on the desktop PC.
Well, I found on the Toshiba download site a display driver update version 28.46. I don?t know if you have tried it but please check it.
Furthermore you can also check other Toshiba notebooks with the same graphic card if there is a latest version of the graphic driver.

But I?m not 100% sure if it?s graphic driver problem. Did you check if the recover procedure can solve this issue? If not, well, I think you should check also this possibility.

Hi, I hope that someone will help me out of this problem.

After unmounting the satellite top cover the lcd screen that doesn't turn on anymore but I guess the system works properly because I can hear the windows access "jingle". I think I reconnected all the cables (green and white connectors for the video card) but I'm not sure about the brown/white/black thin cables from the lcd panel. That's it

Answer:Satellite 5100 - LCD screen doesn't turn on anymore

Hi stefano88,

Why you have disassembled the LCD?

To be honest I don?t know what cables you mean have you also connected the FL inverter to LCD display? This is necessary because FL inverter controls the backlight of your display.

Can you post a picture of the cables that you mean?

I'm experiencing trouble with video on a Satellite 5100/201. It seems that when I press on the left side above the graphics card or press a key on the keyboard on that side, the screen starts to be scrambled and vertical lines appear. At the end windows XP resets giving a critical error on the device and the video passes to 640x480. Same thing occurs when running Linux Suse 9.0.

My doubt is what is the cause: the graphics card corrupted or overheating due to the fan not as efficient as originally (my laptop is almost two years old. Did someone succed in finding the cause and resolved the problem, also with the Toshiba assistance?
Any help welcome.

Answer:Satellite 5100/201: trouble with video card or overheat?

i think the problem at your Notebook depends on the Fan.

A colleague on mine has an 5100-603 and had similar problems.

The Service Station changed the Fan.

I have just replaced a dead main board of a satellite 5100-603 with a new main board which I could get from ebay (Toshiba System-Board FNZSY2 - Part-No. P000341750 A5A000160010). If I boot with a XP installation DVD it starts up but hangs with the message "unexpected error (536674392) in line 1768 in D:\xpspi\base\boot\set-up\arcdisp.c"

I realized that there are different bios versions for different satellite 5100 models. I think I have to flash the latest 5100-603 bios to solve this problem.
Is this correct? (booting with BART-PE from CD or BART-PE from harddisk triggers the same error msg text in a differnt look)

Answer:Mainboard replacement on Satellite 5100-603 - Is BIOS update necessary?

to get your mainboard to work you have to write the UUID (Universal Unique Identifier) on it.
As far as I know you can get the UUID write tool from a service partner of Toshiba.

I stil use very old Toshiba A350D. Notebook works fine with Office, internet browsing and other light task.
But last days i notice a problem with wifi connection. Well, the card constantly switches off automatically. I use Intel Wifi ProSET tool and Windows 7 system tools.
Windows 7 indicator shown no avilable connections and ProSET indicator shown wifi disabled and ask for turn on wifi with hardware switcher, when hardware switcher (mechanical slider with LED on front) is in the 'on' position and LED flashes.
When this happens, the wifi card is still detected in the Windows device manager. I reinstalled all drivers, but this didn't fix the problem.
The card can be switched on and off several times per minute, but most often when the card is turned off it is hard to activate it again.
Fn + F8 works well, if WiFi Link works properly himself.
Is there still someone who remembers this model and met with such behavior?

I got this computer and unfortunatly I do not have access to the cd that came with the computer because my cousin lost them. I tried to install Windows XP Professional that I bought and when the first installation of Windows XP is about to begin i get this blue screen of death message: 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC63C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

The Computer was working before but but it was extremly slow and the dvd-rom was not recognizable by windows. I tried all the known windows corrections related to missing cd-rom drives but nothing made it work. I can boot from the cd in windows boot cd. and i even updated then bios to 1.90 from 1.60.

Must I have the Toshiba installation CDs? There is no other way to install Windows XP Pro?? Must I use the Toshiba Recovery CD?

Answer:Satellite 5100-201 Problems Installing Windows XP (Blue Screen)

Before you start the installation you should to format the whole HDD or partition. Then you can install your OS with the original Microsoft Windows XP CD. After this action you can install the Toshiba drivers. All necessary drivers you can find on the Toshiba website.

I have a Satellite 5100-501 which uses the NVIDIA GeForce 440 Go display adaptor.

Without changing any settings, the display stopped working about two weeks ago. Many other users have had the same problem (see, but nobody has yet been able to explain nor fix the problem. The best that can be done is to disable the driver, which means that the "suspend" function on the laptop no longer works, and leaves me with interference on the screen.

One theory is that a Windows Update has caused the problem. Reinstalling any number of drivers (including those recommended by NVIDIA and Toshiba) doesn't work.

This is a very irritating problem... can anyone help?

Hi all

After I accidentally served some coke for my satellite 5100-503, it went totally dead. My bro managed to clean it up, and it started. But soon after that it turned itself of, and just gave this error message by flashing the front power led: 4x SHORT, 1x LONG, 3x SHORT

I managed to interpret that by the help of certain web site. It is a hex-code 10h, and means: "AC Adaptor output voltage is more than 16.5 V."

And here is what they recommend to do, if AC adapter is ok (and it is, I have checked):

After checking the connection, perform the following:
Check 1
Replace the AC adaptor with a new one. If the AC adaptor is still not functioning properly, perform Check 2.
Check 2
Use a multimeter to make sure that the F8800 fuse on the System board is not blown. If the fuse is not blown, go to Check 3. If the fuse is blown, go to Check 6.
Check 3
Use a multimeter to make sure that the F1000 fuse on the Battery board is not blown. If the fuse is not blown, go to Check 4. If the fuse is blown, replace the Battery board with a new one following the instructions in Chapter 4.
Check 4
Make sure that the Battery board cables are firmly connected to PJ8820 and PJ8821 on the System board and to PJ1000 and PJ1001 on the battery board. If they are connected firmly, go to Check 5.
Check 5
The Battery board or System board may be damaged. Replace it with a new one following the instructions in Chapter 4.

The Satellite 5100 was delivered with Toshiba BIOS!
Please note that different BIOS provide different error codes.
That means that the error code 10h means on Phoenix BIOS something different as on Toshiba BIOS!

I plan to replace the failing CDRW/DVD-drive in my Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 (european version, it was sold as 5105 in the US and other countries).
The built-in drive is a UJDA730.
As upgrade I consider the highly regarded a Slimline DVD+/-RW drive. Unfortunately, some research on the internet revealed that upgrading a notebook's optical drive is not as straightforward as one might hope. I had no trouble removing my old drive (you only have to remove the keyboard and unscrew two screws), so I consider myself capable of putting in an new drive instead. However, two problems remain:

-mechanical compatibily: The 6500A appears to have a different front bezel layout. Its eject button and LED are in a different position than that of my current drive, so I doubt I will be able to use my old bezel with the other one. In addition, the bezel of my old drive has a recess in the lower right corner (similar to that found on some Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks), which gives room for the volume control of the notebook. So I cannot reuse the old bezel, and the NEC's bezel will probably not allow me to close the drive's tray. I wonder if some Dremel-work on the plastic parts of the NEC drive will allow me to fit it in physically. Has anybody tried that?

-electronical compatibility: notebook drives generally do not have jumpers to change their Master/Slave/cable select configuration. Instead this is set within the firmware, so changing it requires flashing a new firmware, which is not ea... Read more

Answer:Replace my notebook drive in a Toshiba Satellite 5100/5105 - Experience?

at first the CD drive in a Satellite 5100 is fixed mounted and only replaceable with the same model! So another modell could work, but as you see the bezel don't fits and perhaps the new drive doesn't fit to 100%! So you will have problems all the way!

What do you think about an external solution via USB or Firewire! This is the better way to upgrade!

I've got Satellite 5100-603. There have been some dead pixels on display. I don't know is it really dead pixel problem or not because the black area seems to be behind the screen. When i move left and right sides, the black area moves left and right sides too (as if the black area is behind the screen pixels)! And i can tell that all pixels are working OK when i look from the right and left sides of the display (because the pixels that seems to be dead, changes at different looking angles).

Are there really dead pixels or is it some other problem?
Is there anything that i can do about it?

For info, i am using my laptop for 2,5 years and there is no warranty of course...

Thanks for any help..

Answer:Satellite 5100 - Question about dead pixels. Is it really dead pixel problem?

Due to your description it is not easy to give you a proper answer. On my old notebook I had two dead pixels and it was easy to see them at the boot up process. At the beginning you can see Toshiba welcome screen and dead pixels are usually green (background is black).

Sorry but there is nothing to do. You must live with it because exchanging the display is very expensive.

Sadly the newer the printer is the less likely it will have drivers for the older Windows versions like W2K, you could try the XP drivers as XP is based off W2K and some W2K drivers did work in XP ok.

Also when installing right click the setup file and choose Properties > Compatability and choose Windows 2000 and see if that works, but very likely your out of luck I'm afraid.

Question: Intel 5100 AGN

I have an ASUS U81A laptop (Win 7 Home) with the Intel 5100 AGN wireless chip in it. Two days ago the wireless refused to turn on. The hotkeys to turn it on display the usual "tower" icon for the wireless but wont turn it on. In the last day I have completely reset my computer with the F9 reset and I have also reinstalled all the drivers for the chip as well as the ASUS wireless console 3 utility and the ATK driver for the hotkeys. As recommended in another post by another member I installed the Xirrus WiFi Inspector. When trying to hit the enable button it says it enables it but the card is still not on and won't detect networks. Also the device manager recognizes that the card is there. I'm at a loss of what to do next. I heard that some people have had luck covering pin 20 on the card with clear tape (supposedly that is the pin that controls the on/off capability forcing the card always on). Has anyone had luck with this?

I notice that there are a number of posting in regards 64-bit drivers for Canon printers but no other posting for the Canon LBP 5100. I purchased this printer around 12 months ago and simply love it, mainly due to the auto duplex that make printing out PDF such an easy task.

I intend building a new computer in the coming months and have more or less decided on installing Windows 7 Home Premium or Pro (Retail) 64-bit. The only major problem I can see with the 64-bit is with the Canon Printer LBP 5100, the canon website shows a 32-bit driver for Vista but no 64-bit versions. Contacting Canon NZ I received a reply stating that as far as they can ascertain there will be no 64-bit drivers for this printer unless Canon Japan decides different.

Questions please: I have been told that Windows 7 will come with a driver for the Canon LBP 5100 but can't find any information in regards this, so my question is does Windows 7 come with a driver for this printer?
If it does will the auto duplex still work?

Anyone knows how to contact Canon Japan (in English) about a 64-bit driver for this printer?

Had anyone that uses this printer come across a work around for a 64-bit driver for this printer.

Answer:Canon LBP 5100 64-bit Driver

Their is a similar post above yours for the lpb 5000. And from their question I can ascertain that windows 7 doesn't come with a driver for your printer since they can't be theirs to work. Even if W& did cone with a driver it would be a printer driver (just basic ) and most likely wouldn't include the applications needed for duplex. Sorry but after 7 is released on the 22 nd maybe with enough inquiries cannon will get with the program. But from their point of view i assume they would just rather sell you a newer model printer. Recently my Dell Inspiron 5100 stopped charging the battery when it was plugged in. After the battery power was drained completely, I couldn't use it anymore because I wouldn't get power at all. When I plug in the AC adapter into the rear DC jack, on the front I have two lights (power and battery) that flash really quickly and short at the same time as long as the power is plugged in. Sometimes when I wiggle around the plug at the back, these flashing lights can speed up or slow down. Yet, I still get no power when I press the power button. BUT, when I have an external monitor plugged in and after I plug in the AC power, the power and battery lights light up solid and then go out within a quarter to half a second. Basically, I'm getting no power what so ever to boot up the comoputer and the battery is also not charging. I've tried multiple batteries, and a second AC adapter but I still have the same problem. I know that there is a common related problem like this on these laptops. I know I can get it to work again via an external battery charger, but are there any alternatives I can try to get it to work again via the AC/DC power?

Answer:Acer Aspire 5100

You may have caused a little video probleme but your main probleme is that you completely screwed your boot partition.

Using partitionning tool like Partition Magic or Gparted to modify partition that have boot sector on it is not a great thing to do, you may damage some systeme file and crash your systeme.

The only solution i see is to try to back-up your file with another computer and reinstall Windows.

Answer:Bios Error 5100

Can't really find anything related to an error like that nor do I understand why you would get a BIOS error when exiting Windows.Do you by chance have an HP 5100 printer?

I have this laptop that starts to load vista and get a blue screen, however it instantly reboots and i cannot read the stop error message. I tried to use vista startup repair but the operating system is not list. I don?t believe the hard drive should require drivers to be loaded, however i did check and could not locate any on acers website. I would simply reinstall but the guy doesn?t have any cd's for it. I do have my personal vista installation cd, but i can?t use his install serial #. I remember on another computer vista detected there was already an activated operating system and was asking for another code. Could i install vista using my serial number, and then enter his number when prompted?.... only thing would be i have ultimate and his is home premium. any thoughts?? let me know if you need any information.

Answer:Aspire 5100 Vista....

I do believe using serial keys that aren't his are violating the copyright law. ( I am assuming you are repairing this vista installation for a customer/friend )

Your best guess would beg et your hands on home premium disks and reinstall.

just bought the SL500 and am not sure why the connection speed is so shotty. i'm connecting to a LINKSYS WRT54GX4 802.11g @2.4ghz. the max i'm getting outta this connection is 54Mbps but usually much less...20Mbps or less. this router is capable of 100Mbps on 802.11g 2.4ghz and i connect at this speed with my wireless PCI adapter (same make and model) 5 floors away in my desktop. am i limited to these speeds on 802.11g?? thanks...m

Answer:Intel AGN 5100 thru-put on SL500

My connection speed problems are far far worse. I have an old Buffalo bg AP, and it's very strange. I get good responsiveness on accessing web pages, but speeds of 2.5kbps on downloading files. Any clues? I tried disabling n, I tried a whole bunch of different settings on the WLAN device, but I can not get anywhere close to reasonable download speeds. Is it a conflict between Access Connections, and Windows Network Control? It kind of feels that way, but I'm not done investigating yet.

New problem with my laptop
I accidently set up a password on my acer e-lock
more like I have forgotten my password and now all my drivers are locked
Is there anything I can do to access them or will I have to take it to a technician?
... and I accidently deleted my sound drive what can I do to fix that?
Sorry for the trouble I'm just not very good with computers.

Answer:Help! (again) Acer ASpire 5100

Likely need to chat with ACER support in your country as manual for that app does mention you need to take to a Acer Customer Service Center. I have an ACER laptop and that app was one of the first I deleted as the potential to lock yourself out was too easily done, just thinking aloud and iirc e-lock was run from boot, so get yourself StartupCPL and look for anything called elock in the startup lists and disable, "may" give you back use of the drives temporarily, but you would still need to speak to ACER as e-lock would not be working if disabled from startups.

As for sound drivers, how long ago did you accidently delete them? Was thinking a system restore back to before you deleted them may work, but easy option is to download and install them again from here (XP is Audio and Vista its Audio Realtek)

Question: Aspire 5100 Bios

I found an Acer Aspire 5100 in the dumpster. I would like to wipe the hard drive and start fresh. HOWEVER, the optical drive is not selectable to boot from (as if it is not being recognized). I read somewhere else that this is a known issue with the Aspire 5100 and that it is usally fixed by updating the bios. HOWEVER, there is a password on the vista administrator account, so I can't log in to do this.

This is what I've tried so far:

1. moving the hard drive to another computer with a working CD-ROM and using NT offline password tool to remove the password. This method does not find the registry files.

2. installing another hard drive with another installation of windows, which will only boot to safe mode because it was installed on another computer. WinPhlash (the bios updater) will not work in safe mode.

The F12 boot menu only gives these two options:

SATA : Hitachi HTS . . . . (hard drive)
PCI BEV: Realtek Boot Agent

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work around this?

i have win xp and my printer does not work with it. I have tried many drivers but none work. I tried downloading the windows 2000 driver and then running bjc the printer angel but my trail for printer angel had expired. Where can I find a working windows xp dirver for canon bjc 5100?

Answer:Canon bjc 5100 driver

XP doesn't list it in it's normal set of drivers? Odd!! Try a Canon driver for a printer that is similar to yours in the defalt set of XP drivers. If you don't see an XP driver on Canon's web site they don't have one.

The computer will not power up after a proper shut-down:

Front panel ON/OFF button/switch is not illuminated and does not initiate power ON
NO diagnostic lights or beeps available
Green light on MB is solid ON

Checked front panel I/O card:

ON/OFF switch actuates and makes contact all the way to the ribbon connector @ pin 11 (or 21 depending on counting scheme) relative to any ground/common pin [e.g. 17 (or 33)]

Pin 1

Pin 40

Pin 11

Pin 1

Pin 40

Pin 11

Checked voltages on MB 24-pin PSU connector:

Pin 9, VSB, at 5V
Pin 16, PS_ON, at ~4V - no change when pressing ON/OFF switch, or when shorting pin 11 of ribbon cable to gnd
Pin 8, Power_OK, at ~0v - no change when shorting PS_ON to gnd

Question before spending money - Is it PSU or MB?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Dimension 5100 won't power up

As the power button LED and none of the diagnostic lights are lite and there are no 'beeps', suspect power supply failure, try installing a different PSU, as a 'know' working power supply is needed to check the motherboard.
The 5100 does not use a Dell proprietary power supply, most standard ATX power supplies with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with, or without, the on/off switch can be used, a power supply with two SATA power connectors is needed.
You should be able to buy a replacement power supply from a local or online computer store.
The instructions for replacing the power supply are HERE.

I have a Speedstream DSL modem i need access to, its the 5100 model.

I have no idea what IP the modem have, so i am having a hard time getting access to the web interface.

This is my routing table when i am connected to the speedstream through ethernet cable:

IPv4 Route Table
Active Routes:
Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric On-link 306 On-link 306 On-link 306 On-link 276 On-link 276 On-link 276 On-link 306 On-link 276 On-link 306 On-link 276

I have no idea how to get access to the modem when i dont know the IP.
I have also tried with a RJ45 to Serial cable, but i am getting no output in Hyper terminal.

Any help wouldt be greatly appriciat... Read more

Answer:Access to Speedstream 5100?

Do an IPCONFIG /all from a command prompt and look for the gateway address. You are not getting an IP address via DHCP so you will probably never get the correct IP address.

I have an old sff 5100 hp desktop, which is running a pentium 4.

To some this might seem like junk already but i actually like tweaking some older hardware and working with it.

What video card can i put on this that will allow me to put dual display and possibly hdmi? i had some spare video cards but this motherboard uses even older video cards

I didn't really want to spend more than 20ish for the video card, the psu is only 240 watts.

I had some older spare memory and a ssd so i was thinking of using this machine as a linux machine and not really for windows. Hopefully if someone does recommend a video card it can be compatible with linux mint 17 or zorin 9 lite.

Would an asus ASUS AH3450 work on my pc?

Answer:WHat video card can i add to a sff 5100

If you're looking to run *nix on that machine, then I'd suggest an Nvidia card, simply for the drivers and support.

What kind of expandability does that machine have? The most I could get out of a web search was that it had a 1x PCIe slot. I remember when I used P4 HP workstations (I had a d530 microtower), and it had an AGP slot, and a few legacy PCI slots.

Since my kitty was kind enough to bite thru the power supply cable on my HP printer, I'm going to hook up my spare printer, a Kodak 5100, until I can get a new cable. The Kodak website doesn't list this model as being compatible with Windows 7 & I'd rather not waste time trying to install it if it won't even work. PS... no kitties were harmed snacking on my cable.

Answer:Kodak all-in-one 5100 compatible?

There isn't a driver for 7 (yet...) but that doesn't mean it won't work

Downloads and Upgrades

Download the file and run the installer as an Administrator: Run as Administrator

Hello !

I have a Toshiba Satellite 5100-201 with 256+128 mb PC2100 Ram.
Now i want to remove the 128mb Ram and replace it with a 512 mb one.
But Toshiba support tells me that 2x256 mb are the maximum for this model.
So it is really impossible to use 512mb modules or is it only "not official recommented" ?

Hope u can help me out, the new memory is already paied and on its way to me..... :-(

Answer:5100-201 Memory upgrade ?

Well, as far as I know these modules you can use:

PC2100 128MB (PA3126U-1M12)
PC2100 256MB (PA3127U-1M25)

And how you said the unit supports max 512MB (2x256MB). This is information which I found. If you want you can try to put the 512 module. But I don?t think that you unit supports this.

I have a problem in that my laptop lcd is garbled with verticle lines, I cannot reset the video resolution. The screen is always garbled except when the Windows XP splash screen is displayed which displays perfectly. I updated the bios and video drivers to v2.8.4.6. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Answer:5100-603 Video Problem

that sounds strange!

Are these vertical lines also there, short time after push the power button (Black screen and red Toshiba letters) or does that only occure when you loading your profile and the desktop is show?

Did you updated your XP to SP2? Since when did it occure for the first time? Did you change aything before the error occure?

Bye Antoni
