Satellite 1800-921: How do I reset a messed up machine?

Question: Satellite 1800-921: How do I reset a messed up machine?

Hi,
I made the stupid mistake of deleting files and programs on my laptop trying to create more space (I eventually got an external hard drive) but I have now messed up my machine.
I have tried to reinstall the Toshiba programs using the tools & utilities cd but I am having programs. For example when I try to reinstall the WinDVD program I get the error message -

'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe. C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microdoft Windows applications.' and then a

"Severe Error has occured" message pops up and then a message saying

"This is not a qualified Toshiba Machine" !!

What have I done?! I have tried 'System Restore' but there are no system restore points on my computer which I can back to.
Can anyone tell me how I can wipe everything off my computer and start again? I'm thinking this is going to be the only way.

Any help would be really appreciated.
Thank you
Nikki

Preferred Solution: Satellite 1800-921: How do I reset a messed up machine?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

the best way would be to use the recovery disc. But you should backup your data before reinstalling the system (everything will be deleted).

Answer:I need a new HDD for my Satellite 1800-100

Hi

Yes, you can purchase a HDD from different manufacture but you should take a look on the HDD size. As far as I know the unit supports max 30GB HDD with 4.200rpm
Usually the unit should supports the 10GB/15GB/20GB and 30GB HDD?s

Hey people,

Just got me a second hand 1800-400 but finding it a little slow. I've order more RAM(256) to go with the 128 it already has. Hopefully this will help.
But I was thinking, What other/faster CPU's can this little machine handle? I can get a P3 1Ghz cpu from ebay cheap but would the system run it?

Cheers
Sym

Answer:Satellite 1800-400, what cpu?

Hi,

I have looked at the specs of some other Satellite 1800 models and found out that they are using different processors. Most of them are using Celeron 1.0GHz and 1.1GHz. I also found a model with P3 1.0GHz (1800-804). But I think it is using another chipset, so I'm not sure if you can use a P3.
By the way I don't think that a little better CPU will increase the performance so much. Upgrading RAM is more effective.

Hi

If you check user`s manuals for Satellite 1800 you will see that this unit is delivered with different drives. One of them is SD-R2002. Google a little bit around. You will find a lot of online shops where you can order one. Other solution is Toshiba service partner.

Hi

Satellite 1800 is pretty old notebook... I have a little bit searched using Google and it seems that you need PC100 SDRAM SODIMM for it but you can also choose PC133 modules, they will also run with lower PC100 speed.

I?m not sure how much RAM it supports but I think 512MB would be maximum for this oldie?

I want to upgrade the HD from 15GB to 40GB or more. What with digital camera images etc., exisitng HD getting rather full. I have done this several times with desktops, but might a laptop be more of a problem??

What's the maximum size HD that will be recognised? Will any make 2.5" wide 9.5mm high laptop HD fit and be recognised? Any need for special connector adaptors? How do I remove the exisiting HD?

Any help much appreciated.

Geoff

Answer:HD upgrade on Satellite 1800-400

Hi

You should (no guarantee!!) be able to use up to 60GB in that model. That comes from the fact that there are a few 'borders' that the BIOS must be able to cross and one is around 8GB I think and the next is around 64GB.

In computers numbers aren't as straightforward as in human life, so to be as safe as possible I'd go for a HDD not bigger than 60GB. However, I want to emphasize that I cannot guarantee that a 60GB disk will work!

So my recommendation, try to buy the disk it with a full refund if it turns out it does not work with the BIOS!

You theoratically could use any diskmanufacturer as long as the physical format is as you suggested, 2,5" and 9,5mm high and using Parallell ATA (in contrast to Serial ATA).

Even then, there are different variants that you should know about.
Disks come in 4200rpm, 5400rpm and even 7200rpm (I think...or at least 7000-something rpm). Anyway, the higher the RPM, the higher the performance of the disk (and the price normally).
So that would tell us to go for the 7000-something disk if we can afford it.
BUT! the higher the RPM the hotter the disk. And the space for the disk is not big.
That means that you could run into heat-problems for the disk if you buy a 5400 or 7000-something disk.
So what I am saying is - stick to the 4200rpm disks. Ok, they are slower but they will probably last longer and the specs of your machine would not gain from such a fast disk anyway.

You won't need any special connector. The disk ... Read more

Hi all.

I have a Toshiba satellite 1800-814 which has a SD-C2502 dvd-rom drive. This drive fails reading CD's more and more every day. The question is: Can I repace it for a cheap dvd or dvd/rw clone or do I have to stick with toshiba parts ?

And a second question. This laptop comes with a HITACHI DK23CA-20 hard disk. Which would be the biggest HDD size I could go for ?

Thanks.

Can anyone confirm this ?
Thanks a lot.

Answer:Satellite 1800-814 - Replacement ODD and HDD

Hello

If you can get on eBay the same drive, it will work with your notebook. Alternative check the user manual. There you can find a list of compatible replacement drives and don?t forget that not all drives are compatible with all notebooks. But the listed drives in user manual are compatible.

As far as I know for older notebooks with IDE interface there is a 28bit LBA limitation. That means you can use HDDs up to 120GB.
But in worst case you can only use a 40/60GB model.

Anybody managed a satisfactory upgrade of a Satellite 1800-400 or similar (384MB RAM, 20GB HD, 800 MHz Celeron)from Win ME?

Would prefer to Upgrade to XP Pro, but clean install 2nd choice.

If I format HD for clean install, would an Upgrade version of XP recognise the Toshiba recovery CD as a legit copy of ME - I heard there may be problems?

I intend to upgrade BIOS and collect all available Drivers for this model offered by Toshiba for XP, but will there still be problems with any of the hardware?

Do the Toshiba Drivers need to be loaded in a special order, and is that during or after the XP install?

Is XP likely to be faster/slower/about the same as ME, with above hardware specification??

Any advice welcome, as I haven't upgraded operating system on a laptop before, and the potential problems seem greater than with desktops.

Geoff

Answer:Upgrade Satellite 1800-400 from ME to XP Pro ??

Hi

I don?t see any reason why WXP should not work on your unit properly. On this forum I have read many topics where users reports about WXP on older units as yours.

Please check Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp and there you will find drivers for WXP.

After WXP installation install display and sound driver at first. After that install other hardware drivers. The next step is Toshiba stuff installation:
? Common modules
? Controls
? Power saver
? Utilities.

It is important to install common modules as first.

I'm trying to upgrade an old laptop (S1800-814) to work on a wireless network.
As far as I know, the laptop does not have a wireless card inside, and I believe that it can't support a wirless card.

Can anyone confirm that?

Is there other ways to get the laptop wireless?
I've heard of a USB dongle that allows the transmition of data to and from a wireless router.

Any suggestions about that?

Answer:How to use the WLan on Satellite 1800-814?

The S1800 has no capability for internal wireless lan.
You can connect a usb wireless lan card or a pcmcia based one.

The usb version of the sat 1800 is 1.1. That means a usb wireless lan card will work but the usb 1.1 interface is a bottleneck.
The other solution using a pcmcia wireless interface is quite expensive but you can expaect full wireless speed if you are using a 32 bit card.

My Satellite S1800-514 is now more than seven years old. I never had any problems with it. But I'm a little bit concerned now about the CPU cooling fan. It is basically running permanently since I bought the notebook.

I'm more a "maintenance" guy than a "repair after failure" guy. On the other side, there is truth in "Don't open a running system".

Should I replace or let replace the fan (cost?; risk?) after 7 years nonstop working or wait until break-down?
Should I open the notebook and clean the fan and cooling unit?

Anybody here with experience?
Thank you

Answer:Satellite 1800-514 - CPU Cooling Fan

You're totally right with the "Never touch a running sytem" ;)
And if you don't encounter any problems so far, well leave it.

But what you could do is, cleaning the fan and cooling modules with some kind of compressed air spray to get rid of dust.

Try this and good luck with your notebook. Seems to be a pretty solid and tough unit.

Answer:How to connect Satellite 1800-400 on TV?

Hello Kevin

As far as I know you don?t need to install a secondary video adapter. The notebook has got Video-out jack output to transfer the NTSC or PAL data to external devices (TV).
If you want to activate the TV output function, please go to ?Display Properties? then click on ?Advanced?. Please click now on ?Display Device? tab.

There you can set the settings to TV and in the ?Multi-Monitor Devices? section to LCD/TV. Don?t forget the TV-Standard (PAL or NTSC).
Nevertheless with the key combination FN+F5 you can choose between the LCD and TV.

All I get is the Toshiba Welcome message..in red text....the nothing...blank screen.

Even If I try to boot into Safe Mode or any other via the Windows Advanced Option screen I get nothing.

I can get to the cmd propmt and I have searched and seen that my data and documents are all still there in the My documents folder, as well as the 'System' and 'System32' files but i cannot see the i386 folder...

I am trying the commands like 'chkdsk' but they are not being recognised as I'm getting the message 'Bad command or file name'

Would a BIOS update help me...

Any other ideas.....will be greatly appreciated...

Answer:My Satellite 1800-911 won't reboot

Hmmm ?. Really stupid situation. As far as I know BIOS update has nothing to do with this problem and it will not help at all. I really do not know what you can try.

Before you do anything you should remove HDD and connect it on other PC as external one and back up all your important data. If you have some time please check this page
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20To%20Determine%20If%20XP%20was %20Activated

following some tips there you can try to repair preinstalled OS. If nothing helps I am afraid you must install OS again.

Got a Satellite 1800-814 laptop. More often than not, the machine fails to start at power-up. Have taken unit apart and the fan starts to rotate when the power button is pressed but nothing else. No HDD activity. Only lights on front of unit are AC, Power amd battery.

Am thinking m/c is probably terminal but can't remember how long I've had it to know if it's still in warranty or not (think it's around 18-24 months).

On the VERY odd occasion it does fire up (we're talking one in ten attempts and usually when it's been left unplugged overnight) then it fires up fine but locks up after around an hour or so.

If anyone's got any suggestions would be grateful to know.

Answer:Satellite 1800-814 failure?

European guarantee is two years but if you have taken your notebook apart I am afraid that there is no guarantee anymore. Did you use this opportunity to remove all dust inside your notebook? Believe me that can be very useful. Notebook works soften and much better.

Can you see Toshiba logo at the beginning or come inside BIOS settings? At the end it can be some hardware problem. When notebook starts again is there some strange noice by HDD activity?

Hi Darek

Thanks for being here ;)
It would be very interesting to know the detailed name of your unit because there are many Satellites 1800-xxx with different hardware configurations.
But nevertheless without to know your detailed unit I have to say that it?s not possible to upgrade the CPU on the notebook. The processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturization and heat dissipation.

Answer:CPU upgrade on Satellite 1800-100

Hello

As far as I know processor upgrade is not possible. A long time ago one user has tried the same thing and the new processor has damaged whole unit because it was not cooled properly.

Please be careful about that.

Question: Messed Up Machine

I have a Win7 64 bit machine that I can't get online. The person who gave it to me admitted to watching porn, which is probably where her malware came from. It would pop up messages about threats, but the program producing the message didn't identify itself.

I've gone through and removed all the tool bars and junk programs I could find and have run Ccleaner.

I've renamed and installed Malwarebytes and updated the database manually. I hit scan, it gets 4 seconds in and terminates. I get a message that the threat scan was cancelled. I've tried running MB by double clicking and as an admin with the same results.

Where do we go from here?

As always, I appreciate all of you who spend your time helping myself and others here on this forum.

Answer:Messed Up Machine

Welcome to the Malware Removal forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode
If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. This girl from Romania tried but apparantely doesn't have the experience to fix MY problem. I removed IE8 and then installed IE9 from the microsoft website. The same problem occurs in IE9 about the browser timing out. Something is preventing it from waiting for a page to complete its task. It's always losing the connection and timing out. I do not have the time out problem in Firefox of Chrome. What could be causing this problem in IE and not the other browsers?

Answer:Since May 20, Machine is messed up

What version of Windows?

System manufacturer and Model?

<<What could be causing this problem in IE and not the other browsers?>>

Any number of possibilities...other than the connection itself.

Does your email work properly on IE?

Why did you remove IE 8?

Exact wording of any onscreen error messages?

Aside from "messed up"...can you give some descriptive narrative of what led to your seeking assistance from the unknown, unamed "Romanian girl"?

Yesterday I've got an Toshiba Satellite S1800-514. I've install the OS (WinXP Home) new.
The notebook display turns off every few seconds. When I press the small button above the power switch (sensor for closing laptop) there is a beep and the display awakes again.
After few seconds (5-50 sec) same procedure starts again.

Is there someone who can explain what's happend and/or how to solve this problem?
The problem exists in all modes (setup/bios dialog, DOS prompt, WinXP startup, WinXP running)!

Thanx!

Answer:Satellite 1800-514 - Display is off every few seconds

Hi!

It?s not easy to say what causes the problem, it could be the FL inverter, graphic chip, LCD, ...

In your case you should test first an external monitor. If the external monitor doesn?t work properly it?s a problem of the graphic chip or mainboard. If the monitor does work it?s a problem of the FL inverter or LCD.

Hello,

I want to upgrade the RAM of my 1800-712.
Actually, i have an SDRAM PC133 256 MB.
It's strange as the bus on this type of machine seems to be at 100 Mhz !

I want to install a Kingston Memory in the second slot.
So, is it mandatory to install the KTT SO100/256 memory (compatible as the Kingston configurator shows), or can i put the KTT SO133/256 ?
As the second is cheaper, i would want to install it ?
Can you confirm the compatibility ?

Thank you.

Answer:Memory Upgrade on a Satellite 1800-712

Hi

It is recommended to use the module with the same bus speed. Probably it will work but in my opinion you should not look at the money just on compatibility and be sure that upgrade parts will not be damaged.

I have a Satellite 1800-921 running Windows XP. It boots up and runs fine but as soon as I put anti-virus software on it slows to a crawl. I want to improve it's performance but have the Maximum recommended system memory of 512MB. Can I increase this in any way to make the laptop run quicker?

The hard disk has been defragged and has 8 of it's 20GB free.

Is there anything else I can do?

Answer:Satellite 1800-921 - Maximum Expandability

It will be interesting to know which antivirus you have installed on your machine.
In my opinion best antivirus is ?AVIRA antivir?. It doesn?t need many resources and runs perfectly on WXP.

Back to your question.
I know for sure that Satellite 1800-911 can be upgraded up to 1 GB RAM so I think that your Satellite can be upgraded to 1 GB too.

According to Windows the new driver isn't newer, so it won't let me update it. And when i try to unistall the display driver, I have to reboot before it takes effect, and wile rebooting it automaticly installs the standard driver again.

Can anybody help me?

Due to poor system performance I bought 256MB RAM to put in with the 128MB the notebook came with. When I opened the cover for the RAM slots I realized both slots were already in use. I got the notebook from my brother and he told me that he had bought 256MB also, a couple of years back, and he claims they worked and the notebook ran with 384MB.

The notebook has a slot A and a slot B. When I put any of the 3 rams (128,256,256) in slot A they are recognised by BIOS and the notebooks runs fine. However, if I put any of them in slot B I turn the notebook on and noting happens, I can?t even get into BIOS.

When I put in 2x256MB (A and B) the notebook also only works with 256MB. So I assume that slot B is somehow broken? Is this assumption correct? How would I have to go about to fix this?

Thanks a ton for any and all comments/ answers

Answer:Satellite 1800-100 - is RAM slot B broken?

Hello

Yes it looks like that there is a RAM slot faulty. This happens not often but sometimes I read about his.
There is no way to fix it. The only way I know is to exchange the complete mainboard. Maybe you can get a second hand mainboard from eBay.

Good luck!

Hi,

had to reinstall WXP on my Satellite 1800-712, unfortunately have not the recovery disk otherwise it would all be ok.

Now I cannot get onto internet, I have downloaded new LAN drivers, installed them ok, LAN is set for auto detect, USB wireless dongle drivers installed all ok.

In my tray (bottom right) icon shows networks but with red cross... I get a message saying wireless networks are within range, click to see networks... when I click , sunscreen comes up saying no networks in range..... aarrrgggh.
What can I do, please?

Answer:Cannot connect to the Internet with my Satellite 1800-712

Hi

First of all you have to check if the WLan card appear in the device manager (expand Network controllers).
If the Wlan card is listed there and if there are no yellow exclamation marks then this means that the WLan card was installed properly.
Now you have to enable the Wlan using the switch (somewhere at the notebooks side) and the key combination FN+F8.

Now the Wlan is enabled and you should be able to configure it.
You can use an 3rd party Wlan tool for configuration or the Win XP own settings.

Check it!!

Answer:Satellite 1800-712 - can the processor be upgraded?

Hello Inge

The CPU upgrade is not possible. The processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturization and heat dissipation. The only thing that you can do is memory expansion. On this way the unit will be ?briskly?. ;-)

If you need info about compatible memory module please write again.

I visit the offical Toshiba driver pages via support home page, but like this link and Satellite 1800-100 drivers are listed wrong with OS compatibility:
I selected and download drivers for Windows XP but none of the drivers can be installed under XP due to these messages:

http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/Satellite/s1800-ps181e/win-xp/irda-xp-41019995.zip - this infrared driver cannot be installed because of this message: "INF style is different" - it's made for Win ME.

Also "Aladding Cyberblade - Trident" display driver for XP cannot be installed, the message: "Not compatible driver with XP".

Why are there wrong drivers on Toshiba support pages for Satellite 1800-100?

Also how can i run "Wireless Link" for infrared connection, whatever i do, i cannot open "Wireless Link icon in control panel", i click on it but it does not open without any alert.

Please help.

Thanks.

When I connect it to my usb port it doesnt register with the computer at all. The green light comes on so there is power to the hard disk drive. The usb ports have recognised other devices fine (a modem and memory stick)

I have tryed the external hard disk on a desk top pc and it is working fine.

I have downloaded all the window xp service pack updates and updated my bios. Dont what to do now.

Please help and many thanks in advance!!

Answer:Satellite 1800-712 won't recognise my usb external HDD

Hi

Well as far as I know sometimes the OS is not able to recognize the external USB device because the external USB device (HDD) uses more power than 500mA.
The USB ports provide 500mA power and if the device need more power so it?s not possible for Windows OS to recognize the external device.
Did you have a external power supply for this USB HDD? You should use it.

We have an old Toshiba Satellite 1800-314 that the CD-ROM drive seems to be failing - it often will not recognise a CD, or run applications from one.

First, the CD-ROM drive is not removable, so the laptop needs to be opened. I'm quite familiar with opening up laptops, but as a hardware or service manual seems not to be available, I thought I'd ask if there is anything to be aware of, such as parts springing out, when I open the case?

I also want to use this opportunity to replace the old CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM drive. But I read that there is an issue with a possible IDE bus conflict:
[REPLACE CD-ROM DRIVE WITH DVD OF TOSHIBA SATELLITE 1800-314|http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/page-28372_20_0.html] (Their caps, not mine ;) )

Apart from "shorting pins 45 and 47" on the connector, are there any other suggestions?

The laptop belongs to my little girl, who will give me +hell+ if it is out of commission for too long, or worse, breaks... X-( So I would like to fix this in one go.

thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite 1800-314 - CD-ROM drive replacement

Hello

The fact is that every optical disc drive cannot be used on every notebook. you are right and it is nothing but compatibility issue. The pin assignment is not the same for all drives and ODDs and because of that you should use compatible drives only.

The good thing is that Toshiba has listed 6 compatible optical disc drives that can be used with this old Satellite notebook.
All of them are listed in ?User?s manuals? document. Check it out.

I tried installing a 256MB Samsung M464S3323BN0-L1L in my S1800-204 laptop. This didn't work very well I'm afraid :) The power light comes on but nothing else happens.

The original memories were one Toshiba THLY64N11A80 (64MB) and one Samsung M464S0924BT1-L1H (64MB). Using one of the old ones together with the 256MB modules makes the computer beep a long and a short beep when started.

I wonder if the reason is that the memory I got is CL3 while the old ones are CL2? Maybe the computer only supports CL2 memory.

If I could get a PC100 CL2 memory, would that work or does it require some special row/column organization too?

Answer:Satellite 1800-204 beeps - I use CL3 & CL2 RAM modules together

HI

Toshiba recommend using these memory modules:
PC100 256MB (PA3069U-1M25)
PC100 128MB (PA3005U)
PC100 64MB (PA3004U)

The PA3069U-1M25 is a Kingston memory module - 256 MB - SO DIMM 144-polig - SDRAM - 3.3 V ? no ECC.
In my opinion you should use memory modules with the same properties.
Furthermore it?s advisable to use similar modules in the both banks.

Hi,

I have a toshiba satellite 1800 which I've been using for the past 6 mths and it has started to turn itself of randomly. I can't seem to find the problem I've tried new ram, but it still turns of. I've even tried reinstalling windows XP home, but when I do it, it gets to the part of the installation when it has just loaded the drivers and at the very beginning before you choose the options it turns off. The last thing on screen when trying this is when it says loading windows. It should ask me if I want to install windows or repair an existing installation, but it just turns off. It only has SP1 installed when I try to install SP2 it turns off midway through.

This is starting to get annoying. It happens very randomly. I can surf the web and watch video clips and play music for several days before it happens again and it will then take 6-7 boots before I can get into windows as it turns off just as it gets into windows. Sometimes turns off before the desktop appears and some times when all the icons appear. It's very random.

Any Ideas ?????

Regards,

Paul

I need to enable it to become wireless compatible and also update the RAM.

Also are they easy to do?

Thanks

Answer:Hardware updates on Satellite 1800-921

The RAM update is possible. You could update it to max 1024MB max and these modules could be used:
PC100 256MB (PA3069U-1M25)
PC100 128MB (PA3005U)
PC100 64MB (PA3004U)

The situation with the Wlan is a little bit different. The notebook does not support any WLan minPCI card and therefore the internal upgrade is not possible.
But you could use an USB WLan stick or a PCMCIA Wlan card.

Answer:How can I increase video RAM on Satellite 1800?

Hmm, may I?m wrong but as far as I know this notebook supports only 8MB sheared memory graphic card. I did not found anything about 32MB.
Anyway, if the BIOS does not contain any option for sheared memory increasing then either it?s not possible or you have to check the graphic card advanced properties.
There you should check the ?performance? tab.

But as I said above, it?s possible that the graphic card supports only 8MB

QUESTION:

I have a Satellite 1800-700. Will the SD-R6472 DVD-RW drive be compatable with this model and will the program: www.movies-to-dvd.com/toshiba.html work?

Thank you

Leon

Answer:Satellite 1800-700 and SD-R6472 DVDRW

Hi,

I think if the drive works in the 1800-100, it should also work in the 1800-700. There are only some different specs, that should not have an effect on this.

This is my first time using the Forum.
I need some help to increase the memory on my Wifes Satellite 1800-712.
It's currently got 256MB in one of the two slots, so I assume it can take another 256MB in the other slot?
I've tried Crucial but they cannot help.

Answer:Satellite 1800-712 Extra Memory

Hi Kevin

Welcome to our ?little? community ;) nice to have new enthusiasts to share knowledge and to solve and discuss problems.

Now to your question:
Yes, you can use another 256MB module. This satellite should be able to handle 2 256MB memory modules and you could upgrade the memory up to 512MB.

But you have to use compatible one.
Visit this useful website for more details. There you will find the right modules

hope I could help..

Thanks for any help!

Answer:Resume from standby - Satellite 1800-514

Maybe have you a possible with a reinstall from the Toshiba Power management. Write your application.
A develop from a new Application is not supported from Toshiba. A Change from the application is your risk.

Answer:Compatible motherboards for a Satellite 1800

Hi,

motherboards for notebooks are specially designed for one model. So you can only replace it with the same board. Sorry that's not so easy like it is with desktops.

I have got a toshiba S1800-400 laptop with a 13 GB hard disk. Can i upgrade to a 40 GB or 60 GB hard disk? Will the bios support this? (I have never done an BIOS upgrade, so it is still using the version of 2001 i think)

Answer:Maximum HDD capacity for Satellite 1800-400

Hi,

there is a newer BIOS version available: 2.20
Unfortunately there is no documentation, so you can't see what HD capacity will be accepted.
You should ask Toshiba service about this.

I am trying to troubleshoot my Satellite 1800:
With correct DC-voltage applied to the motherboard (I measured 15V dc on board) the DC IN indicator is off. The cooling fan smells a bit burnt (doesn?t work) and so I would like to know if it is possible that the led is off in case of a damaged cooling fan? Is it possible that the laptop would not even boot up if the cooling fan is damaged?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Satellite 1800 DC IN indicator off (ac adapter ok)

Hi

I think the laptop should boot up but after a short time the notebook should shuts down.
The unit support an overheating sensor and if the CPU temp increases to the critical level so the notebook should shuts down.
Sometimes a message appears that the cooling module doesn?t work properly and therefore you should shut down the notebook to prevent from the damage.

The other possibility is that the CPU doesn?t work and therefore the fan will not start to rotate and the notebook will not boot up.

Hi -

I have a Satellite 1800-412 that is getting very slow so I'm planning to upgrade the memory. I've been hunting around a few different sites to see what I can buy and there seem to be differing opinions about which memory will actually fit my laptop:

Kingston's website says that I'll need their KTT-SO100/256
...but another site suggested the KTT-S0815/256

Both websites claim that this is the chip that will work.

I also looked on the Toshiba website and found the part number PA3069U-1M25 is the one that I'm looking for, but the chips I've found for sale online recommended for my laptop have different Toshiba part numbers...

Help! I'm confused!
What exactly do I need to buy? Are there actually several different chips that would work, or are some of these sites trying to sell me the wrong one?

Thanks for your help,

Morag

Answer:Memory upgrades for Satellite 1800-412

Hello

I have found info that your unit can handle with 1024 MB max. Compatible memory module is PC100 256MB (PA3069U-1M25). This module is tested and it will be recognized properly.

I recommend you to use right and tested one as cheaper but maybe not tested one.

Hope someone can help.
I recently had my Satellite 1800-314 (Windows XP)re-formatted, and now when I close the lid it won't go into standby.... the power light flashes amber, when I open the lid again, Windows shuts down and then restarts. I have tried installing Toshiba power settings, setting "when I close the lid, standby", to no avail.

Have then uninstalled Toshiba power settings and set ordinary power settings in Control Panel to "standby", etc, but it STILL won't go back to standby.
I'm frazzled now.
Is there a simple solution that I'm missing?

Grateful in advance for any help!

Answer:Satellite 1800-314: When I close the lid it won't go into standby

Hi

You should know that it is very important to install the drivers in the right order.
The installation of common modules at the beginning is important because some Tosh drivers need this application for properly working.
If the power saver was installed on the OS the windows power settings will not work.
The Toshiba settings overwrite the Microsoft settings.

Furthermore please check your preinstalled BIOS. Compare the version with the BIOS on the page. If your unit uses the older version so try to upgrade it.
But be careful. You have to use the right BIOS and the right upgrades procedure.

Hi,
My notebook Toshiba S1800-100 need CMOS battery replaced, i'm suspicious of dying battery as today i've found out that the Windows Time is back about 15 days than current day, however my notebook has no battery, battery has died and only AC power feeds it but it was unplugged for a long time because i was away for a long time.

So, is there a step-by-step disassemble guide of S1800-100 or where can i obtain it from?

Also i'm waiting advices about techniques of changing CMOS battery as i'm senstive for searching disassemble guide in order not to damage mobo.

Thanks...

Answer:I need disassemble guide of Satellite 1800-100

Hello

CMOS battery exchange is pretty complicated and the notebook must be disassembled. Maintenance Manual is not public document and I do not believe you will be able to find it for download.

Only thing I have found is follow link http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba1800/satellite1800_1.htm

Check it please but if you will try to do something you will do this on your own risk.

Good luck!

good day to all!

I have a Toshiba Satellite L40-1800 with model No. PSL4CE-00H00GAR. Recently i just reformat my laptop due to window malfunction. The problem is I don't have the CD driver installer, through a friend he helped me find the drivers through the internet except for the display adapters. Please help me find this drivers for the standard VGA Graphics Adapter and Video Controller. Thanks.

I also have a problem with my other laptop its a IBM R50e model this one is totally damaged i guess. I looked everywhere and asked everyone i know to fix its problem but most of them told me that its a hard drive problem since its an obsolete model i can't find a hard drive that could replace it. Every time i open the laptop a message "ERROR, 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0, Press <F1> to Setup" appears. what could this mean? Is it really about the hard drive?

Thanks. Hope you could help me.

I have installed Windows XP Professional (not using Toshiba installation disk) and since then the display is very slow in refreshing when scrolling. It takes about 30 seconds to scroll one page down in Word for instance. I have tried to install the latest display driver but installation hangs. Installation of the driver in safe mode works, but then the computer hangs at start up and I needed to uninstall the driver. The notebook now seems to use a standard VGA driver of XP.

Answer:Display is very slow on Satellite 1800-412

Hi

If you install the OS from the original Microsoft CD you need Toshiba drivers. These drivers should be installed in the right order. Very important is to install the chipset driver at first and common modules if they are available. Please also check which graphic card you have and install a right driver.

Does anyone know where I can get parts for my DVD ROM. My lad has rammed a dvd into the drive and broken the catch so that it no longer clicks into place. I don't want to buy a new drive as the drive itself is fine. Please help me!!!!!

Answer:Satellite 1800 400 broken dvd drive

Hi Darren,

I think it is unlikely that you will be able to find a replacement catch since the DVD-ROM is normally sold as a complete unit.

You could, of course, try to get a faulty drive from a nearby repairer so that you could remove the parts that you want and fit them into your drive. Try giving your nearest Authorised Service Partner a call and see if they can help.

best of luck,

Hello

I have Sattelite s1800-854 laptop, and i have "BIOS(block1) is damaged" error.
I'm trying to follow this topic:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19801&messageID=72625
but after downloading bios, i've found only three files inside:
BIOFC72T.COM
CHGBIOSA.EXE
readme for Sat 1800.pdf

I can't found BIOS *.bin file.

I was trying to put those files on fdd, but CHGBIOS (v4.24) display only "BIOS file not found on diskette"

Could someone give me a link for bin file, or send it to my mail ([email protected])?
Thank you.
Best regards.

P.S. Sory for my english.

I replaced the heatsink component on my laptop because it suddenly freezed during operation. Now everything seems to be better but one final question is left. How to measure the temperature of the CPU?

HMon does only display HDD temp and the profile in MBM for 1800-224 displays both case and cpu. But can I use this profile? Any other ideas how to meausre CPU temp?

MBM shows me about 40 to 49C for the cpu. Is this normal or too high just for running windows?

Thanks in advance

Greetings
