Preferred Solution: AT SHUTDOWN the unit Satellite 2400 lock up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: AT SHUTDOWN the unit Satellite 2400 lock up

The base system device is usually the PCMCIA slot or card reader or both. Some laptop manufactures bundle a set of drivers and call it "Chipset" even though it includes more than the chip set.
I assume that you didn?t install the chipset driver or you have install it but in the false order. The chipset driver should be installed at first.

Well, the windows want shut down because some background processes are running or because of a OS malfunction. I assume that this problem doesn?t occur with the Toshiba recovery CD because all drivers are installed properly.

About the BIOS procedure:
Please check this Toshiba page. There you will find a instructions how to update the BIOS. IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

But please note: The wrong BIOS or a wrong procedure can damage the mainboard. Firstly you should check if the clean installation with the Recovery CD will solve the problem before you start the BIOS update!!!

Hi There,

I have used the instructions on the post on the virus named in the subject of this post and have still be unable to unlock the desktop. I used the flashdrive method and it seemed to work and remove things afrer several attempts(originally the computer kept starting up the startup repair stuff and not the HitmanPro application) but after using this application. I restarted and its still there. I still can't use any form of safe mode, so if you have any otherhelp, suggestions advice I'd be most grateful!

PS none of the scans worked but had to click something to get this message posted!

I have a Satellite C660 which was working fine this morning. When I returned from work and powered it on, the entire keyboard is not working and therefore cannot enter my login details.
The Num lock and Caps lock are lit.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Answer:Satellite C660 - keyboard is not working but Num lock and Caps lock are lit

Are you able to disable the CapsLock and NumLock?
Can you access the BIOS pressing F2 while powering up the unit?

If this does not work, I would recommend checking an external USB keyboard.
If the USB keyboard would functions, then this means that the internal keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Hi, everyone
I am new here and looking for some advice.

I have a broken A30, I am wondering if i can use its CPU (P4 2.8GHz)and internal wireless card for my Satellite 2400(PS240C-00UJXP) which is P4 1.6GHz?

I checked the wireless slot on my 2400, but didn't find the two cables(W&B) that mentioned on the service manual. So does this mean it cannot be upgrade?

many thanks!

> I checked the wireless slot on my 2400, but didn't find the two cables (W&B) that mentioned on the service manual. So does this mean it cannot be upgrade?
This means that your Sat 2400 doesn?t support a WLan antenna and therefore you will be not able to use the internal WLan card.

> have a broken A30, I am wondering if i can use its CPU (P4 2.8GHz) and internal wireless card for my Satellite 2400(PS240C-00UJXP) which is P4 1.6GHz?
I doubt this is possible? I read several threads here in the forum and mostly a CPU upgrade is not possible due to a overheating issues and due to a BIOS compatibility issues.

i am trying to replace the dvd-rom drive of my satellite s2400-103 but i can't get the old one out of the laptop. I already tryied to remove all screws at the bottom of the laptop but the drive was still fixed. How can I get the old dvd-rom out of my computer?

Answer:Satellite 2400-103 - how to replace DVD-ROM?

Are you sure that you have removed all necessary screws which were placed at the bottom of the unit?
In my opinion the drive is secured with a further screw which is placed inside but I?m not 100% sure.
You can also ask the service partner how to replace the drive because he has detailed documents and informtions about these procedures.

where can I find a efficient driver for the graphic on Satellite A210-1CF for WIN XP
Also I need a driver XP for SM Bus???

Anybody a idea...?

Answer:Need Win XP ATI 2400 graphic driver for Satellite 210-1CF

Hi mate

I had the same problem in the past? Have installed the XP on my machine and needed a GPU driver.

I?ve checked the whole Toshiba driver page and it seems that there are different series which were equipped with the same GPU chip.

You could use the XP ATI driver which was released for the following series:

Equium A210 PSAENE
Equium P200 PSPB8E
Equium A200 PSAE8E
Satellite A200 PSAE6E
Satellite P200 PSPB6E

I?m not quite sure what device is SM BUS? maybe it?s your card reader. So you could try to install the card reader driver released for another A210 series.

Hi all.
New here.

Does anyone know what the maximum hard disk size is for a Satellite 2400-103? This laptop has a 30GB HDD which is full at the moment and I am trying to upgrade to a 160GB unit.

Have used disk cloning software - DiskCopy - to clone the orignal 30GB to the new 160GB. This creates a partition on the new disk that is the same size as the original (around 28GB). If the new hard disk is fitted to the laptop at this point the laptop will start-up OK. If I then use a partition manager - Partition Magic - to resize the partition to the full size of the new disk (around 150GB) then the laptop will not start up.

Could this be because there is some limit on the size of hard disk supported by this laptop?
If so, what is the limit?

Thanks and regards.

Answer:Satellite 2400-103 - What is the maximum HDD size?

The Satellite 2400 is very old notebook so I think it has a 28bit LBA limitation. That means you can only use up to 128GB disk space so the maximum HDD capacity would be 120GB. So I think this is the reason why the notebook can?t start successfully with 160GB model.

In your case I would bring the 160GB model back to the computer shop and ask for another 120GB one. This should normally work?

Dear All,

I try boot from PCMCIA-CD ROM because my DVD ROM is not working. After press the power and press F12, I choose PCMCIA but nothing happen. should I change something in the BIOS first?

My laptop is Satellite 2400.

thank you...

Answer:Satellite 2400: How to boot from PCMCIA-CD ROM?

I have found this Toshiba FAQ document about the booting form the PCMCIA drive.
This article describes a booting on a Prot?g? unit but it?s useful and you should check it.

Furthermore you can check in the BIOS the option ?PC card?. Try to change the controller mode to ?PCIC Compatible? or ?CardBus/16 bit? and try to boot from the PCMCIA card again.
To change these settings you have to change firstly the ?Device Config? to ?All devices?

I have a toshiba am and when I tried the recoery cd, a prompt comes out saying that the recovery cd is only for toshiba M30...which is what I have!
The cd came with the laptop and I have used it before without problem.
Can someone tell me what is wrong with my laptop?

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite M30: Cannot use the Recovery CD - it's not for my unit?

Hmm? possibly the DMI contains the wrong notebook name.
In such case the recovery cannot be installed because the notebook ?thinks? the Recovery CD is for another notebook.

In such case you should ask the service point for DMI update

I had to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 to keep my Windows up-to-date. Unfortunately, my sound device does not function anymore because XP considers it as a potential threat.
When I first installed SP2 last year and saw that I had no sound on my PC anymore, I just unistalled it because I did not know what to do for my sound card.
Now that I must install it, I have to do something about this sound card (as a music lover, I'm dying not to be able to listen to it).

Could you please tell me if Toshiba created a code for this problem? The devices' dialog box tell about a Code 48. Shall I contact Yamaha?
Thank you a lot ofr your answers.

Answer:Satellite 2400 -103: sound not working after SP2 installation

Did you check the Toshiba driver page for the sound driver update?
If not, so do it!
I have visited this website and found a sound driver from Yamaha. The update release is from 14/01/05 and the all other drivers are from 2002. So I assume the sound driver was updated on the page.

Therefore download the driver and install it on your notebook!

Good luck

I have a satellite 2400 laptop, running XP professional. Since a couple of weeks, the powersaver is not working anymore. When I leave the computer for a minute or more, it goes into hibernation.
When I click on Power Saver in control panel, nothing happens. If I click on Power Options, a window tells me that "to adjust power management settings...use Toshiba Power Saver". Then Power Options Properties opens up, but nothing is highlighted on it (ie. I cannot change anything).

I have tried reinstalling the power saver driver from the original installation CD, but a message comes up saying: "C:\windows\system32\ - the system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows application". Then I get a choice of "ignore' or "continue". Whatever I choose, I get the same message: "The installation is failure. Please make sure its reason then retry installation."

Any help would be appreciated.

There must be something wrong with the Windows OS. Bad registry entries or something like that. I would recommend to use the system restore tool of Win XP.
You can roll back the OS to the early point.
This should works.

I'm trying to restore my satellite 2400. I'm getting an error msg

"Toshiba Recovery and Applications
Section: 8
Key: DescriptionFile
Can't read from description file E:|COMPS\a24bdb38\text\desc.txt"

the folder a24bdb38 changes every time i try to re-run the install from the disk. there are 39 folders in the "COMPS" folder, all have a text folder with a .txt document in them. The desc.txt file is accessible and readable when i simply explore the cd and open it. All desc.txt files are descriptions of applications or features on the computer, each of the 39 different letter\number folders is for a different application or feature.

any idea how i can make this work properly, simply would like to restore the computer to factory settings.

sorry for edit. more info.

tried to restore from safe mode. Computer won't allow it. Got an error msg there also though saying something to the point of the description of the computer was missing and i would need to input it correctly so the cd would work on the computer. Was never given an option to input the model of machine as it then prompted me that this could not be done in safe mode.

thanks again.

Answer:Satellite 2400 - Can't restore from boot disc

Why do you try to restore factory settings from safe mode? As far as I know you have to boot from the Toshiba disk to restore factory settings. Therefore boot from this disk and follow the screen instructions.

Otherwise you could try to install Windows from a Microsoft disk. Maybe your recovery disk is scratchy and can?t be read properly. After installing Windows from a Microsoft disk you can download all drivers and tools from the Toshiba website. :)

Good luck!

Answer:Satellite Pro 2100: My unit is very slow

Of course the memory upgrade will increase the performance of your notebook.
Well, if your notebook OS runs since 3 years without new installation so it would be a really nice idea to recover the unit. The fact is that after new fresh OS installation the notebook runs quickly.
If you decided to recover your unit I would recommend to make a back up of your important stuff. In this case you can use a Ghost software.

About the memory upgrade:
As far as I know it?s possible to upgrade the memory to max 1024 MB and these memory modules are supported:
PC2100 128MB (PA3126U-1M12)
PC2100 256MB (PA3127U-1M25)
PC2100 512MB (PA3164U-1M51)

I am desperately trying to find a screen for the following
Satellite S2410-504, part number PS241E-5G7U9-EN

I have spent hours looking on ebay and google and so far havent managed to find one. I cant even find out what connection type I need so I could try another screen in there.

Basically the screen on my laptop died and sometimes comes back on very very faintly in a dark brown colour but mostly doesnt. I have been told this is the light..?

Also looking on here, it looks as if this model is a "special" edition toshiba did which doesnt help matters.

1) do i have to get a complete new screen to solve it?

2) where can i get a screen from?

Who knows what the problem can be display itself or even FL inverter?

In my opinion you should not dissemble it alone if you have no experience. The part can be ordered by service partner in your country or check if some notebook parts offeror can order one for you.

I have found out that display for Satellite 2410 has number P000347380 but please check it again before you order one.

What does this flashing light mean? (should I replace the CMOS bat?)
Thanks for Youre help.

Answer:Satellite 2400-103 - power indicator is flashing orange!

This is a microcode and it appears mostly if a motherboard error was detected.

The short blinking mean 0 and long blinking means 1.
In your case it; 0100 0011 due to the lowest bit you have to read it from behind 1100 0010.

>Should I replace the CMOS bat?
Unfortunately, it?s not known to me what this error code could mean exactly.
But as far as I know only the ASP could help you. And you shouldn?t replace the CMOS battery because you don?t know what the code means and if the replacing would help.

I want to rescue this beauty I found but I have one problem: after entering Bios Password Windows XP starts immediately, no POST no nothing.

I have tried the method that theoretically works: "Esc" key while Toshibe logo shows up and then "F1" when prompted, by laptots restarts when I hit F1. Also I cannot get to start from CD. I've read that you can boot from cd while you press "C" but it doesn't work. Can it be a CMOS problem?

Someone can help me? Tx and sorry for my bad english.

Answer:Satellite 2400-103 does not show BIOS or Boot Menu

This with ESC is right. If you want to enter BIOS settings you must use ESC only.
Start your notebook and press ESC only. I hope you will be asked to enter BIOS password and after doing this you should be able to enter BIOS settings.

In my opinion you should remove BIOS password and set it to default settings again. After doing this I believe usage of CD drive as bootable device should not be the problem anymore.

The Satellite 2400-S251 was deigned for US market.
Maybe the sound driver from the Toshiba US site will help you to get the sound back?

Check this page:

and choose you unit.

After sound driver installation you should also check all the sound controls in the control panel -> sound and audio devices
They must be set to a higher level

What I did: I first the start order set for USB with the F12 key, then click F10 pressed and start again. Next, did not begin the installation, but returned after the boot just to back the existing installation. Then I made a few more attempts, unfortunately without results. I have a Satellite M70-165 equipped with a DVD unit MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-841S (driver version 5.1.2535.0).
After 1 and half years without any problem, few days ago I restore the OS (Windows XP Home) through the Toshiba reboot DVD.

Since then the CD/DVD unit can read audio CD or movies DVD but when I'm going to open a data DVD (software DVD) it says that "it is not possible to access D:\." and something like "function not correct" (I am using an Italian version of Win XP so I have to
translate messages in English).

All drivrs are regularly installed and it should, theoretically, work fine.

I am an entry level user and I don't really know what to do. I've been attending every single forum on the matter for the last few days but no one
could help me.

I would be extremely grateful if someone could help.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Answer:Satellite M70-165: CD/DVD unit can't read data DVD - "not possible to access D:"

This error message was documented on the Microsoft knowledge website:

[Error message when you access the CD drive or DVD drive after you upgrade to Windows XP: "Incorrect function"|;EN-US;315350 ]

The documentation said that this problem may occur if the CD recording program from Roxio Easy CD Creator is installed on the computer, and if the version of the CD recording program is incompatible with Windows XP.

Please take a look into this Forum thread too:

One user solved this removing some video capture software which had a DIY DVD option.
Such programs can change the registry entire values and causes such annoying issues.

Please check if you have installed such programs

Suddenly, after 15 months, my dvd-cd unit is not able to read or burn any disc. I tried over 10 different cd?s and dvd?s and used the fix-tool from windows, restarted the laptop and uninstalled this drive many times, but it seems to be a mechanical problem. The unit is visible and get?s electricity, but can?t read information from any cd or dvd. There is no "read-sound" after I put a cd or dvd inside. What can I do next? My warranty is over. I only used this drive a few times to burn some cd?s, so I don?t know what happened.

I have Toshiba S1410-902 and I would like to make this computer work in wireless LAN. I'm concidering buying wifi card for miniPCI slot, not PCMCIA card. That's why I have some questions:

1. Does this model (s1410-902) have "build-in" antenna around LCD? Buying miniPCI wifi card may be not sensible if the answer is "no".

2. Is there any comatibilty list of miniPCI wifi cards? If so - where? Does BIOS block ability to use wifi cards of non compatibile cards (like CD-ROMs)?
Can I buy wifi card of any producer?

Answer:Satellite 1410-902: Does this unit has a WiFi antenna?

According the specification this unit is ?WiFi ready? and the antenna should be there. I don?t know exactly where is the WiFi antenna slot but it must be placed somewhere under the keyboard. it is very easy to remove the keyboard (fixed with three screws) and you can check if you can find the slot. There must also be the antenna (white and black cables).

Unfortunately I can not give you precise info about compatible WiFi cards but you can contact service partner in your country. I am pretty sure that they can help you.

I want to format my old Toshiba Satellite 2400-S201, but I lost the original disk that came with it.

Do you know of any site where I could get the necessary files to do this. I already tried the toshiba site, but I could only find updates and not the original system files.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite 2400-S201 WinXP format files

Which disk are you referring to? If you need a disc to install Windows from, you cannot download it on the internet anywhere legally, not even for a fee. You must purchase a physical CD. If the PC has a product key sticker, you can borrow a friends disc if it is the same version of Windows shown on the sticker. You should be able to get recovery discs from Toshiba for a discount. A friend of mine had a similar problem with his HP desktop. He had registered it with HP when he bought it and his name and the serial number were on file with HP. He sent them an email and they supplied a secure link where he entered his name, serial number, and credit card information, and 3 days later he had a full set of recovery discs: the Windows XP install CD, a driver CD, and an applications/utilities CD with stuff like Norton, MS Works, WinDVD, etc.... He only had to pay for expedited shipping, and a small handling fee; the actual discs were free. All in all, it was about $32 and a totally painless experience.

Need help. I updated my Windows system of my Satellite 2400-103 for security purposes through the SP pack. However, once done the Yamaha AC-XG WDM Audio device driver is not compataible. Therefore I need to download another compatabile sound driver. Help please...

Answer:Satellite 2400-103, Problem with the Yamaha AC-XG WDM Audio device driver

I think you are talking about the Service Pack2, do you ?

Microsoft regards the Yamaha AC-XG sound driver as being unstable and may compromise system stability. When Service Pack 2 is installed, Windows will disable the sound driver.

You may try to install generic sound drivers but it may not work with your system.

If sound does work you will not be able to use a volume control on your task bar when using the generic driver.

Dear Forum Users,

The original HDD in my notebook has reached its life cycle so I have to replace it.

I would like to know which purchasable HDD units are available for this particular notebook model?

Could I use any SATA 2.5'' notebook HDD as a replacement drive or the Toshiba branded ones are suitable exclusively?

Answer:HDDs suitable as a replacement unit for Satellite Pro L300-1B9?

> Could I use any SATA 2.5'' notebook HDD as a replacement drive or the Toshiba branded ones are suitable exclusively?

Yes, usually all SATA 2.5? HDDs should be compatible since the SATA controller is downwards compatible and even if you would use an SATA II or SATA III HDD, the notebook should be able to handle such device.
But of course the performance would be limited to SATA I

Every so often my power (PA2521E - 2AC3) unit starts beeping and stops the power reaching the computer, forcing it to use up the battery.
It is been happening for several weeks now and sometimes it stops of its own accord, but other times I have to turn my supply off for hours, and keep checking it to see if the beeping has stopped.
It does not overheat as I only have it on for about 30 minutes before it starts beeping.
If I turn the supply off the beeping continues for a good couple of seconds before fading out.

What is it and should I send it back?

Answer:Power unit of Satellite P100-240 does not work properly

I never heard that the AC adaptor would make some sounds or would start beeping?
In my opinion it?s not normal and the AC adaptor should be checked.

You should definitely contact the ASP (authorized service provider) in your country for a check and maybe this part must be replaced?

I think the warranty is valid at this time and the replacement should be done for free?

good luck

Hi, I have my Toshiba Sat p30 and will only run on Battery. Does this unit run on mains or solely on the battery as after period of time get the warning and then closes down. The orange light fades on and off but seems it will only fully charge when unit is completely off.

I have only just got this unit so bit of a novice.

Answer:Satellite P30 seems to fully charge the battery only when unit is completely off

normally the battery should charge always until it is full when the power supply is connected.
If you have a blinking orange light, that means something is wrong. Maybe your battery is faulty or something else. This should be checked by a service guy.

I have just bought a Satellite P200-17c. The ati mobility radeon HD 2400 grafic card was said to be 895MB.
However I have since found out the card only has 128MB of dedicated video memory.

Can i upgrade this and if so with what?

Answer:Satellite P200-17C: How to upgrade the dedicated video memory of Radeon HD 2400

You cannot upgrade the memory of the onboard ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2400 which has 128MB of dedicated video memory (that's memory on the card), but by using a chunk of the 2GB of RAM when required, the video memory can be increased to 895MB.

Hi can anyone tell me what kind of graphic card I have?

It says ATI Radeo HD2400, but those drivers not working when i download WXP Catalyst drivers from ATI.
So there must be more, a chipset, etc. I have PC Wizard, but not telling me much.

I downloaded the drivers in this thread from Rapidshare user and they did not work as well. Any help appreciated.

Note: I am not being difficult, but I need Windows XP for my work only. If i didn't I would accept Vista and not go through much trouble...

Please make XP drivers or at least point us in right direction.
I have spent more than 8 hours trying to get this to work and had to buy external wireless NIC because could not get Atheros to work....
And while we are at it, maybe you can tell me where to d/l Realtek ALC268 sound drivers. doesn't have it. :(

Answer:Satellite A210-106 PSAELE: Need WinXP Radeon HD 2400 driver that work

Hi mate,

did you already tried these sites:

There you should find the drivers, otherwise you should wait since XP support is a little bit ..... when you know what I mean.

Regarding the realtek driver: Try these one from a Satellite A200. But I cannot guarantee that they work. But firstly uninstall the previous drivers and make sure all chipset drivers/tools are installed.

Hello, (I poor speak English ;p )

I have problem with my Toshiba A200 (PSAE6E). My Graphic card Ati MR HD 2400 in system Win XP display 256MB Ram, but in Settings Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 only 64MB Ram !!

Toshiba a200-1QT
Procesor Core2Duo T5550
2GB Ram
Ati MR HD2400

In benchmark 3DMark06 HD2400 exceeded my oldest card x2300, but in Setting PES it displayed 128MB.

Everything there would be ok, but I can't change resolution and other setups?

On Vista is identically.

Thanx for any help!

Answer:Satellite A200: VRAM 64GB or 256GB in Ati Mobility Radeon HD 2400

The notebook supports the Mobility Radeon X2400 code name: M72
It supports [email protected] Local Cache.
Total video/graphic memory is sum of local cache and Hyper Memory.

For example Hyper Memory depends on the installed RAM.
You would get 256MB of hyper memory if system RAM would be 1024MB
Using 2GB RAM the hyper memory should be higher? I think something about 300MB.

So the total graphic memory would be 64MB local cache + ~300MB hyper memory = ~364MB of graphic ram

I have a Satellite M30X-102 laptop and about one and a half months ago it started suddenly turning off. It first looked like an overheating problem, but it also turned off directly after i pressed the power button, and sometimes it worked 10 hours without any problems, also, when it turned off, the power LEDs flickered until I un-and replugend the power cable. If the battery was in, it was instantly discharged.

I sent it to repairs. They only cleaned the cooler and changed the heat-conducting paste and for a few days the laptop worked normally, but about a half of hour ago, it happened again. I am convinced now that this is a power problem, possibly the power cabel.

Do you have any sugestions of what I could do, or should I send it back along with a note that it is a power problem?

Thank you

[Edited by: admin on 23-Mar-06 06:56]

Answer:Satellite M30X-102: Power issue - unit suddenly turning off

If you have the equipment, plug in the power cable, and use a voltmeter to test it and see if it is getting the required voltage, should be 15V for that model. After that, if it works, plug it into the computer and see if the LEDS light up. If they do, move the cable around while its plugged in, and see if the lights turn off. If so there is a false contact on the motherboard and it needs to be changed.

I have a complicated problem I'll explain.

I have a Satellite 3000 X-11 that unfortunately has a dead motherboard, I have a good knowledge of Desktop hardware and having never operated on a laptops hardware I thought I would have a go, I took the laptop apart succsefully only to find that a number of IC chips had departed from the motherboard and it was pretty clear that I needed a new motherboard. I know that there are different models of motherboard for the S3000 series and after rigorous searching I found a ATL02 from a S3000-514 which is a silght upgrade.

After Installing the new motherboard of which everthing went well and fitted with a slight case modifiycation for the firewire port. I attempted to boot the system and the laptop powered but didn't display anything then 3 secs later the speakers beeped three times and then the system sits with the power light on and does nothing concered by the beeping which I know is a warning imediately pulled the power, I have re-stripped the laptop and re-built component by component to see wether I missed something and It apears that the motherboard won't accept the Processor.

The Hardware installed onto the motherboard is what would normally be installed in a X-11. 1.066 Mhz Celeron, 256 Mb Ram 133Mhz FSB VGA Board and everthing else standard.

After a extensive search I found that the processor is supposed to be a 1Ghz Pentium 3 Taulatin and I am going to buy a used processor.

Answer:Satellite 3000-X-11: After motherboard replacing unit doesn't boot

Hi Christopher

The disassembling procedure is very dangerous if you don?t have enough knowledge about that. Many pc users think that it is the same like on desktops but like you can see it is much more complicated. By disassembling procedure you must always use antistatic surface to protect electronic parts. Did you use it?

Believe me on this way it is not easy to say what the problem can be. Be careful with hardware components and their compatibility. Maybe you should contact service partner in your country. Talk with them. They can give you precise information about hardware compatibility.

It is very sensitive area and you should pick up the info from 100% safe source and not from one forum. Can you be sure that the info here are 100% right?

I bought a W520 in January, and in an accident, it got severely damaged. I had purchased the 4year Protection with onsite coverage, and the machine Was replaced with a W530 that I just recieved. The warranty I purchased is still attached to the old machine, after I was assured it would transfer over. How to I get it transferred to my new machine so I can keep my coverage.

Answer:Warranty Transfer from broken unit to replacement unit

I would e-mail your Lenovo rep or the person that handled the replacement. If you don't have e-mail for that person, I would call. I have a feeling that what they will do is cancel & refund the warranty on the W520 and then start a "new" warranty on the W530.

I wish to take the Athlon XP2400 processor out of the one I'm going to sell and put in into the one I'm keeping.

i'm the owner of a satellite pro 4600 notebook, worked fine until some days back. I've reinstalled xp pro, it was running fine until I changed some settings in my bios concerning the battery) then it stopped
if I push the powerbutton only the on led is burning i hear a little click from the floppy and that's it when the laptop is pluged in the on led the adaptor led and the battery led burns.
if I hold the powerbutton while removing the battery and put it back while pressing the button the fans come on the screen lights up without logo or text.
I've found a lot on forums of this problem with this model but no solution

anyone an idea ?

Answer:Satellite Pro 4600 - unit doesn’t start after some BIOS settings are changed

It?s very strange because in my opinion a changing of some battery settings in the BIOS don?t induce such issues.
In the battery area in the BIOS you can change the settings like processing speed, cpu sleep mode, cooling method, etc?
What you can do is set the BIOS to default values. In this case you have to use the ?HOME? button.
But if after this procedure the notebook doesn?t work so I assume that there is something wrong with the hardware. In this case you have to contact the service.

I've now looked at 9 of this series with a variety of chip and HD specs.  All share the same problem - random screen freeze-up, no operation of keyboard,  mousepad or mouse, often, but not always  followed by  involuntary machine switch off. Because they are all well out of warranty, no help has been available from HP.  All the geek sites have provided useful info, from hardware checks - Speedfan etc., updating drivers for everything including the  AMD graphics cards, cleaning out dust, but none have provided a cure. Both the 500 series and b27SA models are involved. Has HP ever put out any advisories other than what I've already done? Joxter  (TIA)

Got a new comp recently, 660S, it has the annoying habit of lighting the Num. Lock on my (wired, USB) Keyboard at Shutdown only way so far to switch off the light is to unplug the keyboard which is becoming boring!
BTW the light would remain on even though the comp. is shut down until it is restarted - then it goes out!

Think I found the answer, I removed my k/b from the USB Hub that I was using and plugged it directly into the computer (only available port was USB3) now the light comes on when shutting down but goes off when the comp completely shuts down! It comes back on again at start up but goes out when OS finishes loading - I can live with that!

Answer:Satellite P200-17c: Radeon HD 2400 grafic card has only 128MB of dedicated video memory

> The ati mobility radeon HD 2400 graphic card was said to be 895MB
Where did you find this information? A link would be helpful.

I think you are a little bit confused and not cleared up.
The Mobility Radeon X2400 supports an external memory with TurboCache.

*Local cache* -> 64MB/128MB/256MB

*HyperMemory* -> [email protected] RAM 512MB
-> [email protected] RAM 1024MB

The _total_ video memory is *sum* of _local cache_ and _Hyper Memory_.
Therefore the total memory varies.

For some reason I have not got the shutdown options within the Lock Screen. They are only in the login but I want to have them in the Lock Screen as I may find myself unable to access login screen sometime in the future. I would like to have that functionality.

I have confirmed the option in my Security Policies is set to disabled but I'm guessing this is not the correct setting. Please advise, as I know it's possible but cannot find the option at the moment. I'm guessing it is most likely in the registry somewhere but have not checked there as yet. Thanks!

Answer:No shutdown option from within Lock Screen

Press and hold the power button. Or set the power button option, in Advanced Power Options, to Shut Down the system for both AC powered and Battery powered.

Not sure why you wouldn't be able to access the login screen. No need to actually Log In. That option is available from the Log In screen where you type in your password.

I am having problems with this computer shutting down, booting and even sometimes while surfing the internet. It locks up about 50% of the time shutting down, and locks up while booting maybe 25% of the time. Sometimes while on the internet a web page will just freeze and upon pressing cntrl/alt/delete once I get the message that Internet Explorer is not responding.
When I choose *End Task* it freezes the system and I have to hit the reset button on the case.

These problems started when I installed my MSI G4 MX440 card a few weeks back. I have updated to the newest drivers for the video card but that has not made any difference.

Should I reinstall Win98SE on top of itself to get the drivers and software back to normal or will that work?

My system is a 400 MHz Celeron, Super Micro P6SBA Mobo, 256MB Micron RAM, WD 80 GB HDD, MSI G4MX440 video card, Diamond Monster Sound MX 300 sound card.

I appreciate any help

Have all available windows updates been done? If not I would try that first.

I seem to have a problem with my paths in windows xp pro. I'm not too sure what it is that has caused the problem, but it is hindering my use of my computer quite badly.

Whenever I run command line prompts such as ping or net, I get an error saying

'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The most recent cause is when I'm trying to run a development MySQL server on my machine and the command line prompt is C:\>NET START MYSQL, to begin the instance. Its the same for any ping commands I run, which means I can't network the PC with anything either. I can temporarily solve the problem by going into the windows registry and navigating to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control \SessionManager\Environment

and changing the path entry 'type' from REG_SZ to REG_EXPAND_SZ. However, whenever I shut down the PC, the path entry goes back to REG_SZ. Is there some way I can lock this change in the registry values, so it stays the way I instruct in the future, and I don't have to keep changing it every time I want to connect my computer to just about anything?

Hi Experts,When we want to lock the computer we do the following:Ctrl Alt Del(A dialog box appears)Lock computerWhen we want to unlock the computer we do the following:Ctrl Alt Del(A dialog box appears)Key in passwordEnterIs there any possibility in the registry (or somewhere) of XP Professional menu to:1.      automate the above,2.      automate a shutdown at specified time? Thanks.

Answer:Auto lock, unlock and shutdown

1) What do you want to automate? Lock? Well, you can use also the windows key+L (the L key). To unlock, you have to press ctrl+alt+del and enter the username and password (username, in case you want to log off the user which locked the computer). You can't automate this -- but you can disable the lock option (why do you want to do it?). Are you in a domain? Then talk to network administrator/system administrator. It's your home computer? Then use the simple logon options, without passwords.A simple way to lock the computer it's to set the computer to lock when enters in screen saver mode.2) For shutdown at a specified time: you may create a bat file, which should contain a line like:shutdown -s -f -t 60(see shutdown command in windows)And then, add a new scheduled task which runs that bat file at the specified time.

After trying to register at their forum, I finally gave up and hope to get help here.

This may be a stupid question, but Slawdog Smart Shutdown has an option to lock the computer. What does this mean? If I lock it, how do I get it unlocked?

I'm thinking this might be a good feature to use for a 16 year old grandson who gets up after we go to bed and gets on my computer. If I could lock it so he couldn't use it without my input, that would be great. Am I on the right track here, or does it mean something totally different?

Answer:Slawdog Smart Shutdown - lock

You really dont need anything to lock him out. Try giving your account a password and when done on the pc simply log out and he cannot get on unless you let him on. Also you can set up to prompt for a password at the screensaver settings screen.

I've just a simple questions (maybe): I recognized, that pressing the NUM LOCK key causes the LED of that key to flash on, ok thats`s normal, but also the CAPS Lock key LED turns on weak.

Now, when I'm pressing the CAPS Lock the LED gets brighter.
Switching off NUM Lock turns off the LED, thats ok, the CAPS LOCK is still burning bright (because it was pressed as well).
Pressing CAPS LOCK again turns the LED off.

Funny thing is: Pressing the CAPS Lock forces the LED of it and the LED of the NUM LOCK to turn on.....

Any ideas or hints?

I was trying to help a friend w/ his laptop w/ Vista (which I have not used before) and when we shut it down, I accidently hit the LOCK icon and closed the lid. When he tried to restart, the system appears to come back up, but then the screen goes black. I tried CTL-ALT-DEL, but nothing happened, still black screen, but there is lots of disk activity going on. We did a hard shutdown (holding power button down) and rebooted, getting an error screen and then booting in safe mode. Can do that, but don't know what to modifiy or try and change. He says he never created a password, has only one account on the computer which is an administrator account. When we reboot into std OS, same old thing, black screen after just a flash of the main screen. HELP????

Hi all,Over the past few months I've been using an X200 Tablet with Windows 7.  Since I've had it I've noticed problems with it not 'sleeping' properly and the ability to Lock, Restart or Shutdown the computer going missing. I?ve done some troubleshooting and narrowed down a scenario where I can repeat the problem 100% of the time.  -       Setup computer with USB device (a keyboard and mouse will do)-       Boot and logon-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Sleep the computer-       Wake the computer-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Unplug any of the USB devices At this point the computer can?t be locked, and if you send it to sleep it will essentially crash meaning you have to do a hard shutdown (or as has happened a few times, wait for the battery to run out in your laptop bag...).  I?ve tried different USB ports on the computer and different mice.  I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers, I've even rebuilt it from the Windows DVD.  Is something anyone else has experianced?  If you have a X200 tablet does the same thing happen to you? T

Answer:Help - Repeatable X200T USB, Sleep and Lock/Restart/Shutdown crashes

Out of the blue, I happened to install this Microsoft hotfix (, and today was the first day that, upon docking, I was able to lock my laptop, and I assume it will go to sleep at the end of the day when I take it home. In checking this forum, I see that this fix was suggested here some time ago: Hope this helps.

I have an X201 Tablet (3113-W4M) that came preloaded with Windows XP SP3.  I blew away the XP image and reloaded with Windows 7 Enterprise and obtained all Windows 7 drivers from the Lenovo website. The issue is that after the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernate *and* I plug in a USB mouse or USB mouse/keyboard combo, I am unable to lock, shutdown, restart, or hibernate the system.  Additionally, anything that invokes UAC fails to display.  If I look at Processes under Task Manager, I see where consent.exe is running (called when a UAC approval prompt should be displayed).  Sometimes it is running multiple times corresponding to multiple events that should have displayed the prompt (e.g. running RegEdit).  Turning off UAC is a workaround to this issue but does not address the root cause and does not address the lock/shutdown/etc. issue. After extensive troubleshooting that included 2 full OS reloads, process monitoring, and deep log reviews, I have narrowed my issue to the following steps: 1) Boot tablet with no USB mouse and/or keyboard attached2) Attach USB mouse and/or keyboard>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both function as expected.3) Hibernate tablet (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)4) Resume from hibernate (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both fail I discovered this as I move my system from work (Logitech S510 keyboard/mouse c... Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock lights no longer function

Hi everyone!

I've a problem with the Num Lock LED. Although the num lock is on, LEDs do not indicate this. This interferes me at work, a bit.

Any Ideas?

Answer:Satellite A660 - Num Lock LED not on

Hi buddy,

So you can use the number pad but just the LED is not on?!

Well, theoretically the LED could be faulty so it?s not on. That?s the only explanation I have. I mean if the num pad works it?s no hardware malfunction of keyboard itself so it must the LED?

Do you use the preinstalled Windows version?

If your notebook is under warranty you can get a new keyboard for free. Just get in contact with an authorized service provider and explain the situation. The guys will help you to get rid of this :)

For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

Answer:Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking)

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

I have been using my P10-792 even since I bought it 3 year ago. There?s been a battery waning box that pops up on my screen (sometimes) saying that I should replace the wrong inserted battery and restart my computer. There?s also a mouse touch pad issue. It touchpad doesn?t respond well to my commands while trying to move the pointer.

The battery-warning message usually comes along with the touch pad malfunction. I have to press ?esc? several times to restore the touchpad back to normality and close the process application ?Btrychkr.exe? under the CTRL+ALT+DEL menu to make the waning box go away.

But the major and most recently problem are the lockups, especially when running programs that require high video processing such as 3D games and DVDs. The screen freezes for several seconds before it comes ?back to life?. This is sometimes followed by a sudden shut down.

Finally, when I try to turn it on, it doesn?t even get to load windows before it shuts down again, and so on. So I have to wait several minutes before pushing the ?on? button again. Now we have reached a critical situation where the computer won?t last more than 10 minutes before it automatically shuts down without any previous notice. There are no error messages so I cannot see what the cause of the problem is. (Battery? Overheating?)

It?s also important to notice that a friend of mine with a P10 series also had these same problems and eventually had to buy a new one because the laptop got just ou... Read more

Answer:Satellite P10-792 lock ups / crashes and battery

You use you notebook since 3 years. Did you replace the battery during this 3years?
No? I think it would be a nice idea to change the battery.
Usually after about 500 times of charging and discharging procedures the battery performance going down and the life time decreases?

Additional during these 3 years the notebook should be cleaned. The fans suck the dirt and dust and sometime the cooling modules cannot rotate with full performance and cannot cool the CPU and other devices.
Of course, the overheating could be a reason for your shut down problems?

It sounds like you haven?t much experience? so I think someone with more experience (technician) should clean the notebooks cooling modules?

We have about 60 Satellite Pro L20s on a network. When the user starts the computer sometimes they start with the number lock on. Its seems to be worse on some that others. This is very annoying as it causes problems with logons.

Is there any way of disabling the number lock function on these laptops?

Answer:Number Lock Problem on Satellite Pro L20

I am a little bit confused. I thought that SP L20 has no ?Num lock? key.
Is there maybe activated a green lamp under F11 button?

Hi Guys,

I have a Satellite A40 and it has become a pain. First the caps lock keys didn't work, that didn't matter. Then i realised if i pressed ctrl+C the caps work come on, now ctrl c z x c m and v all make the caps go on or off.

You can't use it!

Am going to use an external keyboard which i think will work. Have tried a few downloads form this web-site but it isn't changing.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

PS i have no games on it.

Answer:Satellite Pro A40 Caps Lock on and off with many keys

Well, it?s not easy to say why this malfunction occurs.
You can try to use the ?System Restore? tool. This can help to set the OS to the early point.

Furthermore if it doesn?t help, I would recommend to recover the OS with the delivered Recovery CD. (Please make a backup of your files.) If the problem still the same after this procedure so I think it?s a hardware malfunction and you should contact the service agents for scrutiny.

I have this laptop:

In the specs it says there is a slot for a kensington cable lock, but under the compatible options tab I can't find a lock to buy.
Searching generally on the Toshiba website for cable locks, none of them are listed as being compatible with my particular model.

Can you help me find the right kind please?

Answer:Which cable lock to buy for Satellite Pro P200?

I am not 100% sure but such cables are not designed for each notebook brand separately and you should visit nearest PC store. I am pretty sure you will find this cable there.

Ask your local dealer about this.

Why can I not get my 'caps lock' to make ANY sound!? I have clicked 'Toggle Keys' and nothing happens. It doesn't matter whether the box is ticked or not ticked. This is a frustrating situation. I have a NEW L30 series laptop with MS Vista home edition.

Grateful for any assistance.

Answer:Caps lock without sound - Satellite L30

Should a sound appear during using the ?Caps Lock? button???
This is not known to me and I didn?t notice something like that on any notebook series!

My second notebook is a Satellite L30 with Vista and something like that does not appear on this notebook.

But to tell the truth I don?t know why this is so important!
In my opinion it doesn?t matter if the ?caps lock? sound will appear or not.
