.LNK Problem on my Satellite 5100

Question: .LNK Problem on my Satellite 5100

I have a satellite 5100-201 and yesterday evening Ad-Watch kept displaying "Registry modification detected" with the choice of ALLOW or BLOCK, I chose block then after I rebooted all my icons changed to .LNK Can anyone help fix this? I am trying to run a registry programme from a CD to see if that would fix it. I can't run internet or open a CD.
I believe that changing the bios boot sequence the the CD drive would run the registry programme - how can I acces the bios I have tried esc F2 F10 but no luck. Anyway, any fresh thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: .LNK Problem on my Satellite 5100

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: .LNK Problem on my Satellite 5100

Hi John,

This seems to be a particular problem with Ad-Watch and I have found a possible fix on the following web-site :-

Select 'File Associations' from the options under 'Win XP Fixes' and then download the '.exe' zip file. Note the use of task manager to start the RegEdit program.

I have a Satellite 5100-503 notebook, now I bought a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card for an external 60Gb hdd. The problem is that:
a memory key work well with pcmcia card
hdd work slow but well with usb 1.1
hdd is not recognised by pcmcia card

Anyone could help me?

Answer:PCMCIA usb 2.0 problem on my Satellite 5100-503

in my opinion this problem is related to the PCMCIA card driver!

If the PCMCIA card is recognized by the OS and there is no problem in the Device Manager, everything should be ok!

You can write us the PCMCIA card vendor and model name, bt I don't know if somebody could help you!

It will be better to connect the support of the PCMCIA vendor!

The user guide doesn't spell out the differences between the S5100-201 and S5100-603 models.
I can work out they are different speeds, memory and hard disk size but what about the internal bits?

I have a broken -603 model with a power control fault. Does anyone know if the systemboard from a -201 model will fit into the -603 unit?

Answer:Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100-603

I am not technician but I have found info that those units have different graphic card and both can not handle with max RAM.

Satellite 5100-201:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 32 MB
- can handle with max 512 MB RAM

Satellite 5100-603:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 64 MB
- can handle with max 1024 MB RAM

I am not 100% sure but if you exchange the whole Mb with all hardware components I believe that other peripheral devices should work well but I don?t know how it will work with BIOS. Maybe the DMI must be rewritten.

On this forum there are few guys with very good knowledge and I hope some of them will post here and say more about that.

I stil use very old Toshiba A350D. Notebook works fine with Office, internet browsing and other light task.
But last days i notice a problem with wifi connection. Well, the card constantly switches off automatically. I use Intel Wifi ProSET tool and Windows 7 system tools.
Windows 7 indicator shown no avilable connections and ProSET indicator shown wifi disabled and ask for turn on wifi with hardware switcher, when hardware switcher (mechanical slider with LED on front) is in the 'on' position and LED flashes.
When this happens, the wifi card is still detected in the Windows device manager. I reinstalled all drivers, but this didn't fix the problem.
The card can be switched on and off several times per minute, but most often when the card is turned off it is hard to activate it again.
Fn + F8 works well, if WiFi Link works properly himself.
Is there still someone who remembers this model and met with such behavior?

I have a Toshiba S5100 201 which performed well and the very annoying problem with the Nvidia graphics driver. After much searching on the web, it would appear that a fix to the problem has not been found. If anyone has had better luck than me, please post a message.

When reporting the error to Microsoft an automatic replies states that there are no reported faults, therefore no solution. I searched the Toshiba website and they only have the original driver from 2002.

There are many posts concerning graphics problems with my particular model and several other Toshiba models but no word from Toshiba or Nvidia on the subject. This problem means that I have to shutdown and reboot many times, and often it just packs up without any notice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Toshiba and Nvidia are also included in this request.

Ps I have tried a couple of drivers and am currently using GeForce 4 440

[Edited by: admin]

Answer:Nvidia graphics driver problem on my Satellite 5100

Hi John

Usually you should always use the Toshiba graphic driver because only these drivers are designed for the notebook usage. The NVIDIA graphic driver you can use on the desktop PC.
Well, I found on the Toshiba download site a display driver update version 28.46. I don?t know if you have tried it but please check it.
Furthermore you can also check other Toshiba notebooks with the same graphic card if there is a latest version of the graphic driver.

But I?m not 100% sure if it?s graphic driver problem. Did you check if the recover procedure can solve this issue? If not, well, I think you should check also this possibility.

I've got Satellite 5100-603. There have been some dead pixels on display. I don't know is it really dead pixel problem or not because the black area seems to be behind the screen. When i move left and right sides, the black area moves left and right sides too (as if the black area is behind the screen pixels)! And i can tell that all pixels are working OK when i look from the right and left sides of the display (because the pixels that seems to be dead, changes at different looking angles).

Are there really dead pixels or is it some other problem?
Is there anything that i can do about it?

For info, i am using my laptop for 2,5 years and there is no warranty of course...

Thanks for any help..

Answer:Satellite 5100 - Question about dead pixels. Is it really dead pixel problem?

Due to your description it is not easy to give you a proper answer. On my old notebook I had two dead pixels and it was easy to see them at the boot up process. At the beginning you can see Toshiba welcome screen and dead pixels are usually green (background is black).

Sorry but there is nothing to do. You must live with it because exchanging the display is very expensive.

I had to reinstall my notebook with the original recovery CD
on Windows XP Home. I've run the latest updates.

Since I've used several USB devices, the system tells me that
I have to connect that device to a USB 2.0 port to get fastest

I'm pretty sure I've never had these messages before.

Doesn't my 5100-603 support Enhanced USB?

Which drivers do I have to download and where?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:USB 2.0 on Satellite 5100-603?

Hey Oliver

Such messages are nothing unusual if you connect the high-speed USB 2.0 devices to a notebook with USB 1.1 ports.
Yes, as far as I know the Satellite 5100-603 supports only the USB 1.1 ports and not the USB 2.0
This is a notebook hardware limitation and it cannot be upgraded with any drivers.

I assume you didn?t get any messages in the past because the updates and Microsoft QFE was not installed.
Anyway, nothing wrong with you unit.

I have a satellite 5100 which when I try to boot it hangs on the red toshiba screen and the small blue window at the front shows HDDPassword= I have never set a password for this. I have tried disconnecting all power sources but still no further forward any suggestions?

Answer:Satellite 5100 HDD Password

if there's really a HDD password set, it's very bad, because there's no way to remove it.

But maybe it's just some kind of failure. Try to reinstall the system or get access to the HDD from another computer.

My satellite had some coke for the first time, didn't like it. Got it cleaned but still warms up and shuts down. If anyone has a faulty 5100-503 with presumably ok motherboard, I'd like to bid for that.

Answer:Need motherboard for Satellite 5100-503

The new motherboard is very expensive. Motherboard and display are the most expansive notebook parts!!!
I think it make no sense to buy a new board for this oldie!
If you want you can order it from the Toshiba authorizes service provider?

But I would recommend buying a second hand Satellite 5100 or board from the Ebay.

I've recently had installed satellite broadband via the Ipstar terminal. This terminal would serve well as an air raid warning siren, the noise the fan makes. There are sites selling quiet computer fans however, before I go further, has anyone done this. Put a cooling fan making less racket in the same terminal I mean.

I have a Satellite 5100-503 with a GeForce4 440 Go and I recently installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 as fresh install. I tried to play a game that I had installed and played on the other operating system (XP SP1).

When I tried to run it, it sent me a ?Could not run OpenGL? message. Then I browsed your website for drivers. The only problem was that when I checked your driver archives my model was nowhere to be found.

I checked various other unofficial websites for drivers but again without success. After that I tried models that where close to my model, but they didn?t help me, then I tried various force wares with modded .inf, no success either.

All I?m here to ask you is to please send me the drivers or upload them to the internet for download. The last time (a couple of years ago) when I had installed the OS, I downloaded the drivers from your website and it worked perfectly.
I hope you can answer to my problem as soon as possible.

Also I would like to have all the drivers needed for my laptop, for Windows XP SP2.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Need WXP drivers for Satellite 5100-503

All WXP drivers you can find on Toshiba download page but under option ?Product type? choose ARCHIVE.
Install all stuff and when you are finished check for Windows updates. SP2 will be installed and it should run well.

This notebook is pretty old and tested with SP2. Some strange problems are not known to me. For me it is one of the best Toshiba notebooks.

Answer:Question about Satellite 5100

Hello Meisoon

As far as I know under ?Toshiba controls properties? you can set what the SubLCD should show. It can be set to clock or own string. It is not known to me that you can use two different strings and that they can be displayed separately depending on switching on or off.

If you find out how it works please write again.

I have a Satellite 5100-201.
Recently, a screen problem surfaced: first images outlined get blurred, then stripes appear, usually the screen collapses to provisional modus. I noticed that the notebook gets really hot and I thought this must be a problem of overheating.

I vacuum-cleaned the notebook, I even opened it and checked that the fan turns properly. Afterwards, the notebook worked one time, the fan did run constantly and the notebook did not get heated.

The next day, the problem surfaced again and this time I got even a black screen. Now, the notebook boots normally when I turn it on, but I know that after a while it is gonna get hot again.

Ah, I also updated the driver for the graphic card, but it did not help. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Answer:Satellite 5100-201: overheating after several time

To protect from the overheating the CPU has a n internal temperature sensor. If the computer?s internal temperature rises to a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or the processing speed is lowered. Use the cooling method item of the basic setup in the Toshiba power saver.

Furthermore it is very important that you use the notebook in the right position. The area near to the cooling module grilles must be free because the fan must ?take a breath?.
It?s important for the fresh air circulation.

I have a Satellite 5100-503 and was really satisfied until yesterday.
There it stopped working.
What I did: Closed the notebook after work (everything ok) and leaved it alone for a while. When I opend the notebook again to continue working nothing happend.
Only the small frontdisplay showed me a spinning CD (no CD inserted) and the battery status display. After pressing the on-button the on-sign appeared but nothing happened again. Pressing the button again (for some seconds) made the on-sign dissapear. No display, no fan, no harddisk noise in any case (ono/off). Inserting an audio CD and pessing the play-button works! Soundsystem is working well.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?
any questions? more infos necessary? please ask!

Please help

did you tried to remove the battery pack for about 5 to 10 minutes! It seems that the notebook can't start the hibernation file to boot windows. You can also try to push the start button for 5 seconds.

I was given an I-pod for Christmas but when I connect it up am told that I need a Hi-Speed USB port which this model doesn't feature. Message comes up saying that I need to get a Hi-Speed USB Host Controller - any advice on which would be the best one for the job gratefully received.

Answer:I need a Hi-Speed USB port on Satellite 5100-503

I am not sure if your Laptop supports USB version 2.0. Sometimes there are USB 1.0 AND USB 2.0 ports available on notebooks. Try to change to a different port and see if the "Hi speed USB..." message will show up again.

In case your Laptop is only fitted with USB 1.0 ports, then you can still use your I-pod on those USB ports. The only disadvantage is the slow speed for the File-transfer and the message that pops up telling you "This device can run faster...blablabla". If you can live with this, your problem is solved.

A better solution would be to buy a USB 2.0 adaptor for PCMCIA. These adaptors plug on the side of your notebook and provide you two or four additional USB 2.0 ports. You can find such an adaptor in every proper computershop or through ebay:

As I said, I am NOT sure if your Laptop has USB2.0 support. Cause if it does, then you might be missing some drivers.

Good luck

My disk made some strange noises, maybe it have one foot in the grave...
Have latest bios 1.9. and original disk at 30GB.
Have an Hitachi 40GB I tried with, but notebook did not find it.
So I would like to know what disks and sizes that are supported for that model.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:What HDDs are supported for Satellite 5100-201

Very strange? did you use a compatible 40GB HDD?
In my knowledge the notebook should be able to recognize the 40GB HDD.
As far as I know the 30 GB HDD which was installed is a Toshiba MK3017GAP and the computer supports a 20, 30, 40 or 60 GB HDDs.

I think these HDD should be compatible:
Toshiba HDD2171B 40GB HDD
Toshiba HDD2183B 60GB

PS: The strange noise coming from the HDD could be the ?beginning of the end?
So make a data backup.

I am owner of a Toshiba Satellite 5100-201. The five keys 9-O-L-.-Del on the keyboard do not work. Is it a software problem or a defect of the keyboard controller or a contact problem on the board? Has someone experience with this problem? Can it be a BIOS-problem? I have Bios 1.90.
Can someone help me?

Best regards

Answer:Satellite 5100-201: Five Keys: "9-O-L-.-Del" do not work

in most cases the problem is that there is some dirt on the contacts of the keys.
You should remove them and clean it, and check the connector of the keyboard.
If this doesn't help the keyboard probably is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Hey all,

I have a HUGE problem with my Satellite 5100-503.

Windows XP is logging on and then it logs off straight away.

I found a fix for this at: [url]{/url}

The problem is I can't boot from a cd because the BIOS is set to boot from the hard-drive first.

I get into the BIOS. I read on a few places on the net that on Satellite 5xxx machines you can only get into the bios through windows!! isn't working so I can't get into the bios. I can't even use the Windows Installation CD when I boot up, because again the HD is set to boot up first.

When I press ESC while turning on the laptop and then press F1 I get the option to load the BIOS defaults. I've done that but the HD is still set to boot up first!!

What can I do....I can't re-install windows or get into regedit to fix the log on/log off problem!!

Answer:Satellite 5100-503: Not possible to boot from CD drive

Hi Jamie,

Normally you can select a boot device selection menu when you power on your notebook. You can do this by holding the F12 key down when you power on. keep it pressed until the notebook beeps or the device selection menu appears.

If this doesn't work then you could try the usual Toshiba short-cut which is to hold the 'C' key down during the power on which should then cause the notebook to boot from the CD drive. Obviously there has to be a bootable CD inserted first.

I had recently bought a new HDD due to problems to the previous one, so the hard disk have nothing in it. But when i thought everything was fixed, i have discovered a new problem.
Every time i turn the computer ON an try to access the boot priority to choose the CD-ROM drive (F12) so i can install the system, nothing happens.
I've already tried different combinations, C (to CD-ROM), DEL, F2, F1, ... nothing happens.
There is a weird thing however: if i turn OFF, and then ON again, with Esc key pressed, the LCD ask for password. I don't even remember if i ever set a password... I've tried many letters and words, and 'x' works; then a message appears: Press [F1] key for default setting, i press F1 and the system runs untill it reach the HDD:
Insert System Disk in the Drive
Press any key when ready...
pressing, only repeat the message

If i turn the computer ON without using Esc, and if use Esc when the TOSHIBA logo appears, don't ask for password, just for the message: Press [F1] key for default setting
and everything loops...

The new HDD its a HITACHI 160Gb and i know the problem its not from the disk

I've already did a search and i think its something about the BIOS, but i don't know for sure.
I'd really appreciate any help you could give.

Answer:Satellite 5100-503 BIOS 'locked' maybe

I don't think the 5100 has a BIOS screen. All you can do is reset the defaults.

If its saying "Insert system disk", that means the operating system has not been installed or there is a problem with the boot sector.

I don't know what the max HDD size is for the 5100, but 160GB might be too large. It may be limited to the 128GB LBA48 limitation ( ).

Anyway, holding down 'C' during POST should get it to boot from the CD. Unless the CD Drive is faulty.

My Satellite 5100-503 shows garbled image during startup particularly when the computer is warm.
The sound also breaks.

It was diagnosed as a display card problem. The card has nVidia GeForce4 440 Go chip.
What is the equivalent card available in the market or any reliable source?

Answer:Satellite 5100-503 - I need a new graphic card

As far as I know the graphic card can not be exchanged. It?s soldered on the mainboard and so you need a new mainboard.
Are you sure that is a graphic card issue? Do you have the same issue on an external monitor? Check this!

Maybe the notebook gets to hot so try to clean it with compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust.

I have a Satellite 5100-201 P4-M 1.6 Ghz with 30Gb IDE HDD and 1024Mb RAM. I use my "good old" Satellite only for Music (the greatest sound found on notebooks!) but now my HDD has become a bit weak.

So my question is if there's any limitation of HDD-Size for this notebook. I would like to buy a IDE 120GB or 160GB HDD with 5400rpm and 8MB Cache. If that would not be possible I can also take the 80GB HDD (some other threads say it works), but the bigger the better!

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Satellite 5100-201 - Limitation of HDD size

Hi buddy,

I think the maximum HDD capacity would be 120GB because the notebook has a 28bit LBA limitation. That means only HDDs up to 128GB can be used so 120GB would be the maximum. 5400rpm and 8MB cache are ok.

By the way: It?s nice to read that you are still so satisfied with old Satellite 5200 :)

I once had downloaded a whole bunch of fixes for the Satellite 5100, but through bad circumstance I lost the files.

When I search for Satellite 5100 fixes now I can find only ONE for the Bluetooth stack. The whole download search hasn?t been really working for YEARS now. The selection doesn?t stay on the selected product and some time ago you got all kinds of product- and OS-unrelated stuff. Nowadays you get almost nothing for older products.

I bought a 2GB micro-SD-card with SD adapter and the 5100 canīt handle it. (I intentionally sticked with 2Gigs and avoided a SDHC card)

I know there was a driver update for the card reader!!!

Answer:Satellite 5100 SD-card-reader -> new drivers!?

Hey buddy,

wheres the problem?? I took a look on the driver site and the drivers (SD-Card Host Controller, etc.) are full available.

I choosed on the driver site Archive -> Satellite -> Satellite 51xx and then everything was there.

Please take a look and if your model has nothing then go to another model of the 5100 series because they are all similar machines.

As far as I know all units that have remote control have installed a small application called ?Controls?. Check in control panel if you can find something like that.

You can replace your CD re-writer with vurtually any DVD burner that is the same physical size, but you will need to make sure that the new burner has a similar configuration set-up to your current drive.

Typically the drive will be configured as Master, Slave or Cable Select (Csel), by the manufacturer and this must match the configuration of your current drive. One of the Nero tools will show you how the current drive is configured.

Unfortunately, most retailers do not show the configuration and with the slim-line drives there are no dip switches which you can use to change it.

Hi to all,

I've an important question, my PC (Satellite 5100-503) does not works properly for PCMCIA slot when I want to controll it at low level by means Jungo Drivers (writing and reading of a particular address space for Compact Flash Card device), for others LAP TOP PC (HP) my program works properly.
The question is: do you know if this is a known problem and what driver or ather solutions you propose to solve my problem?

Thanks a lot,

Answer:PCMCIA Low Level Control - Satellite 5100

In my opinion the only thing that you can do is BIOS settings check but I am not sure if you can do it on this unit. If this not help than I don?t believe that you will be able to control it on low level with this unit.

I'm currently owner of a Toshiba Satellite 5100-603. The problem is the video card. But i can't find a new or second hand video card for this laptop anywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to look for this card or perhaps has one spare or with the problem i described a few lines back (lines and flickering in your screen).

Answer:Satellite 5100-603: Where to find a new graphic card?

Try on eBay. There you can find many notebook parts. Google a little bit. For new parts is no problem to find them but second hand parts??

a friend of mine has ruined his Toshiba Satellite 5100.
He erased all partition on the hard drive while the laptop still using the default setting,
so I couldn't boot from cd or enter the BIOS.
Is there any solution for this??

Answer:Can not enter BIOS or boot from CD - Satellite 5100

Hi Veenone,

Erasing the partition on the hard drive would have the same effect as formatting, but you should still be able to boot as far as loading the BIOS (this is normally where the Toshiba screen appears with the boot options), before you see an error along the lines of "HDD:0 .....", although this error may be different according to boot options etc.

You should be able to re-install Windows from a recovery CD.

Could you tell us any error messages you are seeing or any other screens or options etc?

My harddisk in my Satellite 5100 broke down and I want to change it.

According to various messages in the forum, it is not possible to boot the 5100 from a CD when there is a (new) harddisk in the machine. And the only way to change the boot sequence is via Windows - which does not work anymore - there is no other way to change BIOS parameters than inside Windows.

I have looked in the manual - I cannot find any mentioning of pressing F12 or C or any other combination to change boot sequence (I have of course tried nevertheless to no avail). The only thing one I have found possible is to press ESC + F1 to _restore_ default BIOS settings. And powering up pressing the key left of the space bar gives me the possibility of flashing a new BIOS.

Is it really so? Since that would mean I'm stuck. And in that case I'll simply save the money for the new harddisk and throw out my laptop... (and probably by another brand next time - but I sincerely hope it isn't so...)

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Answer:Satellite 5100-503: Changing HDD and booting questions

Oookay. So after pressing F12 at boot time I have to use the _cursor_ keys to move the thin line that looked like an error symbol beneath the graphical symbols, I should have guessed that...

Sigh. I liked the old text approach better.

Anyway. I'm now booting from the CD and I'm installing windows on my new HDD, happy happy.

Hi there!
I own a 5 years old Sat. 5100-201 which worked just fine until today.
Now I experiance problems with the graphic card as I guess, the screen is flickering and distorted and then I mosztly get a blue screen which tells that the graphic
card drivers is running into a loop.

I have a dual boot system, so I checked it on both win xp installations and it's the same problem on both, so it seems to be a real hardware prob.!
So I think I have a graphic card problem, but as far as I know, the chip is fixed on the motherboard and is not replacable, is that right?
Is there any workaround which I can do to make sure what the problem is?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I'm experiencing trouble with video on a Satellite 5100/201. It seems that when I press on the left side above the graphics card or press a key on the keyboard on that side, the screen starts to be scrambled and vertical lines appear. At the end windows XP resets giving a critical error on the device and the video passes to 640x480. Same thing occurs when running Linux Suse 9.0.

My doubt is what is the cause: the graphics card corrupted or overheating due to the fan not as efficient as originally (my laptop is almost two years old. Did someone succed in finding the cause and resolved the problem, also with the Toshiba assistance?
Any help welcome.

Answer:Satellite 5100/201: trouble with video card or overheat?

i think the problem at your Notebook depends on the Fan.

A colleague on mine has an 5100-603 and had similar problems.

The Service Station changed the Fan.

Hello out there,
this is a german calling...
I need an update for the graphic driver of a laptop toshiba satellite 5100-503, the nvidia geforce4 440 Go, which you cannot get on the nvidia site, where are no mobile systems to get.
My Laptop is quite slow. I just want to accelerate its performance.
Thanks outthere

Answer:Driver update for Satellite 5100-503 with NVIDIA geforce4 440 Go

This old notebook model is definitely not supported anymore and on Toshiba support page you cannot find any update. What you can do is to search around to find notebook with the same graphic card but maybe with newer driver and try to install it.

Can you please tell us why you need more graphic performance? For gaming?

Hi, I hope that someone will help me out of this problem.

After unmounting the satellite top cover the lcd screen that doesn't turn on anymore but I guess the system works properly because I can hear the windows access "jingle". I think I reconnected all the cables (green and white connectors for the video card) but I'm not sure about the brown/white/black thin cables from the lcd panel. That's it

Answer:Satellite 5100 - LCD screen doesn't turn on anymore

Hi stefano88,

Why you have disassembled the LCD?

To be honest I don?t know what cables you mean have you also connected the FL inverter to LCD display? This is necessary because FL inverter controls the backlight of your display.

Can you post a picture of the cables that you mean?

I have just replaced a dead main board of a satellite 5100-603 with a new main board which I could get from ebay (Toshiba System-Board FNZSY2 - Part-No. P000341750 A5A000160010). If I boot with a XP installation DVD it starts up but hangs with the message "unexpected error (536674392) in line 1768 in D:\xpspi\base\boot\set-up\arcdisp.c"

I realized that there are different bios versions for different satellite 5100 models. I think I have to flash the latest 5100-603 bios to solve this problem.
Is this correct? (booting with BART-PE from CD or BART-PE from harddisk triggers the same error msg text in a differnt look)

Answer:Mainboard replacement on Satellite 5100-603 - Is BIOS update necessary?

to get your mainboard to work you have to write the UUID (Universal Unique Identifier) on it.
As far as I know you can get the UUID write tool from a service partner of Toshiba.

I got this computer and unfortunatly I do not have access to the cd that came with the computer because my cousin lost them. I tried to install Windows XP Professional that I bought and when the first installation of Windows XP is about to begin i get this blue screen of death message: 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC63C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

The Computer was working before but but it was extremly slow and the dvd-rom was not recognizable by windows. I tried all the known windows corrections related to missing cd-rom drives but nothing made it work. I can boot from the cd in windows boot cd. and i even updated then bios to 1.90 from 1.60.

Must I have the Toshiba installation CDs? There is no other way to install Windows XP Pro?? Must I use the Toshiba Recovery CD?

Answer:Satellite 5100-201 Problems Installing Windows XP (Blue Screen)

Before you start the installation you should to format the whole HDD or partition. Then you can install your OS with the original Microsoft Windows XP CD. After this action you can install the Toshiba drivers. All necessary drivers you can find on the Toshiba website.

Hi all

After I accidentally served some coke for my satellite 5100-503, it went totally dead. My bro managed to clean it up, and it started. But soon after that it turned itself of, and just gave this error message by flashing the front power led: 4x SHORT, 1x LONG, 3x SHORT

I managed to interpret that by the help of certain web site. It is a hex-code 10h, and means: "AC Adaptor output voltage is more than 16.5 V."

And here is what they recommend to do, if AC adapter is ok (and it is, I have checked):

After checking the connection, perform the following:
Check 1
Replace the AC adaptor with a new one. If the AC adaptor is still not functioning properly, perform Check 2.
Check 2
Use a multimeter to make sure that the F8800 fuse on the System board is not blown. If the fuse is not blown, go to Check 3. If the fuse is blown, go to Check 6.
Check 3
Use a multimeter to make sure that the F1000 fuse on the Battery board is not blown. If the fuse is not blown, go to Check 4. If the fuse is blown, replace the Battery board with a new one following the instructions in Chapter 4.
Check 4
Make sure that the Battery board cables are firmly connected to PJ8820 and PJ8821 on the System board and to PJ1000 and PJ1001 on the battery board. If they are connected firmly, go to Check 5.
Check 5
The Battery board or System board may be damaged. Replace it with a new one following the instructions in Chapter 4.

I have a Satellite 5100-501 which uses the NVIDIA GeForce 440 Go display adaptor.

Without changing any settings, the display stopped working about two weeks ago. Many other users have had the same problem (see, but nobody has yet been able to explain nor fix the problem. The best that can be done is to disable the driver, which means that the "suspend" function on the laptop no longer works, and leaves me with interference on the screen.

One theory is that a Windows Update has caused the problem. Reinstalling any number of drivers (including those recommended by NVIDIA and Toshiba) doesn't work.

This is a very irritating problem... can anyone help?

I plan to replace the failing CDRW/DVD-drive in my Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 (european version, it was sold as 5105 in the US and other countries).
The built-in drive is a UJDA730.
As upgrade I consider the highly regarded a Slimline DVD+/-RW drive. Unfortunately, some research on the internet revealed that upgrading a notebook's optical drive is not as straightforward as one might hope. I had no trouble removing my old drive (you only have to remove the keyboard and unscrew two screws), so I consider myself capable of putting in an new drive instead. However, two problems remain:

-mechanical compatibily: The 6500A appears to have a different front bezel layout. Its eject button and LED are in a different position than that of my current drive, so I doubt I will be able to use my old bezel with the other one. In addition, the bezel of my old drive has a recess in the lower right corner (similar to that found on some Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks), which gives room for the volume control of the notebook. So I cannot reuse the old bezel, and the NEC's bezel will probably not allow me to close the drive's tray. I wonder if some Dremel-work on the plastic parts of the NEC drive will allow me to fit it in physically. Has anybody tried that?

-electronical compatibility: notebook drives generally do not have jumpers to change their Master/Slave/cable select configuration. Instead this is set within the firmware, so changing it requires flashing a new firmware, which is not ea... Read more

Answer:Replace my notebook drive in a Toshiba Satellite 5100/5105 - Experience?

at first the CD drive in a Satellite 5100 is fixed mounted and only replaceable with the same model! So another modell could work, but as you see the bezel don't fits and perhaps the new drive doesn't fit to 100%! So you will have problems all the way!

What do you think about an external solution via USB or Firewire! This is the better way to upgrade!

Ok, so I tried to replace the memory in this Dell Insipron 5100 laptop. It just starts flashing the num and scroll lock 10 times then shuts down. (No signs of POST failing or passing) I have upgraded to the most recent Bios from the Dell site (a32 from a21), but to no avail. Here is my memory info:

Old Memory: Hynix PC2100 256mb DDR 266mhz CL 2.5

New Memory: Hynix PC2100 512mb DDR 266mhz

(By the way I am just putting in 1 stick of Ram at a time. The old 256mb will start the computer fine. Also, I have tried just sticking the ram in Slot B instead of Slot A.)

I am at a stand still....any ideas?

I have two questions:
1) Is it possible to just install the drivers for the printer without having to download a whole 210 MB of Kodak Easyshare program which I don't need.

2) There is a problem with the black ink. It prints faint and with black lines. I have tried the following:

a) calibrating
b) cleaning the nozzles (not manually of course)
c) taking out and reseating ink cartridges

None of the cartridge lights are on and it tells me that there is 80% ink in there. Actually it says 80%/50% but not sure which is the one I should be worried about. However, no low ink lights are on or flashing.

I was given the printer from a friend so I inherited the problem. They said it was working fine until he downloaded the latest version of firmware; now it's like this.

It is less than a year old, but my friend has lost the paperwork from Best Buys!!

Has anyone had this problem? Did you solve it? If so, how?

Answer:Kodak 5100 AIO printer problem

it appears that if you want the drivers, you need the big download.

Did you ask why he installed firmware? I never install firmware if something is working with no problem. I suspect it might not have been working properly and he installed firmware hoping to fix it.

Hello! I have a R500 Series ThinkPad with the Intel 5100 AGN WiFi adapter. The driver for the card has been updated as of today (September 7, 2010). I have a D-Link DIR 655 WiFi router (replacing an old Linksys 54g WiFi router). The firmware of the router has also been updated today. I'm running the router under the WPA-2 standard with AES cipher type, channel width of 40 Mhz on 802.11n mode only with auto channel scan (just as Intel is recommanding). I also followed Intel indications for the WiFi card. Problem is : the laptop just can't connect to the WiFi network...? I tried all sort of things, but to no avail. Answer:Serious Intel Wifi 5100 problem

Hey, welcome to Vista Forums!
Assuming the wireless card is removable, you could try re-seating the wireless card, also, you could take the card out, and boot, then shut down, and put the card back in, then boot and see if it made any difference.

If it's not removable, check to make sure any wireless switches are turned on.

Please post back with what you have tried, or even if you managed to fix the problem and how!
Hope this helps,

1) You are saying that the laptop's built-in mouse (touchpad?) and keyboard don't work? (fyi, if applies in your case, some laptops have a switch near the touchpad that turns them on/off) Check your user documentation

2) If 1 above is true, then you certainly need at minimum an external mouse / keyboard to even just diagnose/try to fix your problem. However, you mention needing a PCMCIA/USB card.. Any reason for you to believe the USB ports on the laptop aren't working either?? Just try plugging a USB mouse into the laptop's USB port?

Ok I have a Asus G60VX thats less than a year old running windows 7. On Friday (three days ago) the system was working fine, I could connect to the internet and everything. Tonight when i turned on my laptop it showed that i couldn't connect to the internet. So i rebooted both my computer and router thinking it was my brother playing Xbox live. It still didn't work. So i tried the usual suspects: deleted the saved file and made a new one, went into the device manager and made sure there weren't any problems (there weren't), i even tried doing a system restore but to no avail. I tried the Fn combo on my keyboard and the switch on the front but this still didn't work. After three hours searching for a solution on my desktop (which can access the internet fine) I kinda want to take a sledge hammer to the thing. :) So at this point i'm begging for a solution! thanks!

Answer:Problem with Intel WiFi link 5100?

Did you install any iTunes or Apple software before this happened?

For now, try resetting the network protocol tcp/ip stack. In an elevated command prompt, copy and paste this then hit enter:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Then do the same for this command:

netsh winsock reset
Reboot and test the connection. If still no good, go into Internet Explorer.

Tools | Internet Options | Connection | Lan Settings

and make sure there are no checked boxes. Then ok your way out a few times. Reopen IE and test.

If still no good, please respond about the Apple, iTunes software and/or do you have mdnsresponder.exe in the task manager?

I get this msg when i try to use webcam in my OFFICE computer:

"Sorry, you appear to be behind a firewall and are currently unable to use the Yahoo! Webcam service "

I have disabled the firewall in my computer. But i am able to connect only with the option " firewall with no proxies" option turned on in ymsngr.
I know my office comp is connected to a lan. but i dont know what router (if at all) is used. i dont have any other information regarding the lan system. i have checked through websites that even ports like 80 show as closed for my ip.

so how do i open port 5100, if at all its possible. or shud i try some proxy. i have tried http and sock proxy but without any success due to my llimited knowledge.

Answer:Yahoo webcam port 5100 problem

You cant do anything on your computer to resolove this issue. It is on the firewall (DMZ) for your whole network. It has that port closed, most likely for streaming video so you bandwith wont get bogged down. So i dought your It dept will open it for your webcam. Even thought you remove the proxies all traffic from your network is still routed threw a firewall.

My computer is running on Windows 7 Professional 32bit. It has worked fine for the last 2 years. But recently, my wifi card has started me giving me problems. It detects the wireless networks but connects to them only for around 10-15 minutes after which the connection is not even visible in the list. Then after 30-40 minutes, it can connect but the same problem is there.

Also, I tried to make my own ad-hoc connections and saved them. These connections do work and my friends are able to connect to it and the connection remained active for hours. I did it to check whether the Wifi card is working or not. It does work but only with the outgoing connections that are made by my computer. The networks that in range and are giving problem with my wifi card are working fine for my friends. So, I guess it is not the network's problem.

When I tried troubleshooting it, it gave the problem 'Problem with wireless adapter or access point'. I also tried installing all different driver versions and rollbacking to the default version for my wireless card but the same problem is there. Although in device manager, It says the device is working properly.

Please help me in solving this problem. Exact name of WiFi Card in Device Manager- Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN

Answer:Intel 5100 AGN WiFi Card problem

The same complaints and problems with this 5100AGN adaptor has been around for a long time.

There are countless threads about this on the internet. It seems that disabling the 802.11n Only setting in the routers settings and running in mixed wireless mode can help. Updating the drivers can also help, try the Intel site. > Intel? Driver Update Utility

There are plenty of long threads about this ongoing problem with some possible solutions, so your not alone.

Hi, for a long time now I have been having problems with my wireless.  Every now and then, my wireless connection will just completely drop but only for a second or two.  This disrupts anything that I am trying to do (webpage loading, games, messenger applications, job application processes, etc) and I can't seem to isolate the problem.  Other people at home haven't told me of any sudden, short internet drops. I have the newest drivers according to the device manager and have updated most of the relevant drivers from the Lenovo website.  I am running windows 7 64 bit. Thanks if anyone can suggest where the problem is coming from

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop with a Radeon Mobility 7500 video card and a Sigma Tel Audio sound card.

A few months ago there was a little bit of beer spilled onto the keyboard and soaked into who knows what. It seemed to have no effect for a few weeks and the computer worked fine. Then it started acting strange when I would try to play games on it, stuttering mostly. This laptop has been through alot and has never had a fresh Windows install and a format so I decided to do it hoping that it would clear up whatever problem it was having.

I have done a fresh install with all of the drivers and Windows SP3 etc., and it seems the problem still exists. CPU usage is all over the place and the laptop runs very slow in general. I want to say maybe it is a hardware problem from the beer that is causing this although I should say a few things I've learned. I run winamp with the milkdrop visualization, and it runs PERFECT. But it cannot run Unreal Tournament 1, I used to run this at full speed months ago with no hitches so this GPU has enough power. I also have trouble running even a Nintendo emulator with my backup NES roms, it stutters. Also apparently I can run DVD movies from a disk on the laptop without a hitch, but when I go to youtube to watch videos, it stutters constantly and seems to struggle. I have done a Norton virus scan, Ad Aware scan, Spybot scan...and nothing.

The last thing I can say is that the Windows boot screen comes up everytime which never happened b... Read more

Most people who are clicking on this thread and who also have a I5100 with this same problem, have probably already read the 270-post thread on this subject.  If you have not read this, and if you are looking for answers as to why you perfectly new (or just a few month old) laptop is shutting down at-will, then know that you are probably dealing with an overheat issue, and you need to start by reading through all, or almost all, of the posts in the following thread:  Or you can simply read below for a summary of the advice given in that thread. The reason I'm writing this post is that I'm hoping that we can try to group together, amongst ourselves, a few "techies" to properly diagnose this problem, SINCE dell is apparently not doing that for us, but rather, they are just replacing our motherboards, sometimes bi-monthly, until our individual warranties expire.  They might have the luxury of unlimited cash; but most likely, the majority of us do not.  And as soon as our warranties expire, we will be stuck with a perhaps useless laptop. As such, hopefully with your help, we can figure out this problem and then make a final thread on this forum so future purchases of this product will not go through the same turmoil.  .....perhaps a lofty goal, but most of us would like to keep our laptop for computing use after our warranties expire, as opposed to us... Answer:Inspiron 5100 shuts down automatically because of well-known overheating problem

I apologize for not reading your entire post. It's a quite lengthly and I just wanted to throw in some suggestions.
About your first question when the screensaver comes on, try to quickly access the task manager and find out what program is causing your cpu usage to be at 100%. This will pinpoint the program/service/etc. that is causing your computer to heat up when the computer is idle.
Another thing that I would do is scan for any viruses. Make sure that you update your virus scanner before you do the scan.
Make sure that nothing is blocking your fan vents and that your laptop is placed on a smooth surface. Preferably a table surface where nothing is blocking the vents in any way.

I am new here. I'm not even sure if this question is in the correct forum (I hope so). I have a Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop that I purchased a few months ago. In the last month, the wireless connection has been dropping like mad ! And more recently, when it drops, it says it can't find any wireless networks. I then have to perform a hard shut off (by holding the power button till it powers down) and wait a few minutes to turn it back on. I have uninstalled the wireless adapter and then reinstalled it and that didn't work either. Also, all the drivers are up to date. I am very frustrated at this point and don't know what to do. Any help that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks !!

It is always a VERY good idea to check the microfilters (if using ADSL) which are fitted into your phone sockets and make certain that you have microfilters in any socket in the house. Microfilters are very cheap to get hold of and its worth having a few spare.

About 2 hours ago it was working perfectly. I disconencted it because I re-arranged the room the router was in. I plug it back in and I get not internet connection. Whats the deal!?

I've Tried doing a restart by pressing the Restart Button for 6 seconds (10 to be sure) and all I get is the 'Sys' light flashing when it should be a solid green. I don't know what else to do. I usually have my PS3, voip and wireless connected to it but at the moment just the computer so it doesn't get confused or something, I don't know =/

So what can I do? =( its been like this for an hour!

Help mee!! I have 2 problems...
I've just rebuilt an Acer Aspire 5100 with X1300 graphics and SATA hdd.
I've updated to the latest BIOS v3.13, reinstalled Windows XP Media Center edition and have all the drivers except for one "Unknown device" which may be the modem - the modem socket is cracked so would this explain why the device is "not found" by any driver software?

The second problem is XP stalls during boot-up after the Windows XP logo screen - it goes to a black screen and then hangs. I can only get XP booting to proceed by inserting an USB drive and then taking it out again! It's as though the laptop is waiting to test the USB ports before it can continue. Is this a software problem or a drive configuration problem - SATA HDD shows as "PM" (-?primary master) and the IDE DVD-RW drive as "SM" (-secondary master) on the configuration screen in BIOS, but as "S1" and "PM" on the Boot Order List in the BIOS. I just need this to boot reliably without having to stick in and take out a flash drive!!

Answer:XP Media Center Boot problem on Acer Aspire 5100

I have found the problem is the ENE card reader driver. If I don't install this, then Windows boots as normal. Uninstalling the drivers is not straightforward either - I'm having to do a System Restore each time to get things working....

Any ideas?

i slapped on vista ultimate 32, the intel 5100 will be in device manager without any problems.  the only for me to get the blue led to light up again is to do a uninstall in device manager and reboot.  vista will then detect new hardware and reintall the wifi all over again.  this does work but to do it every week suck.  i dont want to buy a new internal or external card either.  this happen to anyone else?

To clarify, the wireless works, but the blue LED doesn't and the fix you described only temporarily fixes it?  Have you installed all the other drivers as well; the ones located on the d:/ drive?

Hello everyone,

It is my first thread on this forum and I want to thank you because you indirectly help me so many times.

I just installed new bios 1.25 on my notebook because of usb issues. Everything works fine but suddenly my wifi device stops working on windows 7.
It is well installed, the connection under Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections is enabled, but It doesn't see any WiFi spot.

It is not a device hardware problem because it works under ubuntu.

I tried all the usual ways: reinstall drivers etc but nothing happens.

I don't want to reinstall my OS because I'll have too many settings to restore after.

Is there anyone experiencing the same problem? Anyone who fixed it?

Then I wonder if Lenovo 3000 N500 4233 series supports N network with the following network card Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN.When I linked up with Rauter with N, so I got a speed of about 65 Mbps, but far away from thespeed of 100-130 Mbit/s +.I have spoken to Lenovo and received a reply to update drivers on all that goes too uppdate and see if it works. If I do not find them at Lenovo, I would go to Intel and Microsoft homepage to see if there were any new drivers.Slowly and soil, I made it and found newer drivers for the network card but to no avail.I spoke with Lenovo again and got the answer that it could not do more because the card was 65 Mbps, which is certain to N working. In other words, nothing is broken can not be repaired, even if it onlyperforms 1/4 of what it should be!I was still unhappy, I could go back to the medamarkt and return the machine.I wonder how somone can say something like that when intel WiFi Link 5100 AGNshall work up to 300 Mbps while It can't get more then 65 Mbits/s.For if I have 65 then I am on N linkage because the G only goes up to 54 Mbit/s.The most strange is that not only was the serier of Lenovo 3000 N500, having problems with Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGNnot performing as it should. The answer I got was to either leave or wait until someone will solve the problem (Lenovo,Intel or Microsoft).Plus I have age machinery that works good in 130 Mbits/s without problems while a new can not?Strange thinking about this.So what do you do?Someone who knows ... Question: Acer 5100

hi all,I have an acer aspire 5100, the laptop does not seem to recognise the dvd/cd, even in safe mode it isn't there. It was working up until now I installed a new printer at the beginning of June, although I have had this problem before and I am sure the acer helpline told me to download something but this time around all they do is keep on telling me to do a recovery which I don't want to have to do, especially if it is going to happen again. I found somewhere some advice telling someone to delete lower and upper filter which I have done but it made no difference. Many thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:Acer 5100

sounds like the drive itself has failed, i had the same issue with mine within 2 weeks of buying it (mines a 5920G). Does it show in the BIOS.When you get to the acer splash screen press F2 and you will be sent to the BIOS, then go to the boot screen and see if the drive is listed there. If it isn't then it has failed so either buy a new drive and install it or if its in warrenty send it to acer to fix.

Question: Intel 5100 AGN

I have an ASUS U81A laptop (Win 7 Home) with the Intel 5100 AGN wireless chip in it. Two days ago the wireless refused to turn on. The hotkeys to turn it on display the usual "tower" icon for the wireless but wont turn it on. In the last day I have completely reset my computer with the F9 reset and I have also reinstalled all the drivers for the chip as well as the ASUS wireless console 3 utility and the ATK driver for the hotkeys. As recommended in another post by another member I installed the Xirrus WiFi Inspector. When trying to hit the enable button it says it enables it but the card is still not on and won't detect networks. Also the device manager recognizes that the card is there. I'm at a loss of what to do next. I heard that some people have had luck covering pin 20 on the card with clear tape (supposedly that is the pin that controls the on/off capability forcing the card always on). Has anyone had luck with this?
