Preferred Solution: PCMCIA usb 2.0 problem on my Satellite 5100-503

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: PCMCIA usb 2.0 problem on my Satellite 5100-503

Hi,

in my opinion this problem is related to the PCMCIA card driver!

If the PCMCIA card is recognized by the OS and there is no problem in the Device Manager, everything should be ok!

You can write us the PCMCIA card vendor and model name, bt I don't know if somebody could help you!

It will be better to connect the support of the PCMCIA vendor!

Sorry

Answer:PCMCIA Low Level Control - Satellite 5100

Hi

In my opinion the only thing that you can do is BIOS settings check but I am not sure if you can do it on this unit. If this not help than I don?t believe that you will be able to control it on low level with this unit.

Hi,

I have a satellite 5100-201 and yesterday evening Ad-Watch kept displaying "Registry modification detected" with the choice of ALLOW or BLOCK, I chose block then after I rebooted all my icons changed to .LNK Can anyone help fix this? I am trying to run a registry programme from a CD to see if that would fix it. I can't run internet or open a CD.
I believe that changing the bios boot sequence the the CD drive would run the registry programme - how can I acces the bios I have tried esc F2 F10 but no luck. Anyway, any fresh thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Answer:.LNK Problem on my Satellite 5100

Hi John,

This seems to be a particular problem with Ad-Watch and I have found a possible fix on the following web-site :-

http://www.dougknox.com/

Select 'File Associations' from the options under 'Win XP Fixes' and then download the '.exe' zip file. Note the use of task manager to start the RegEdit program.

Hi

The user guide doesn't spell out the differences between the S5100-201 and S5100-603 models.
I can work out they are different speeds, memory and hard disk size but what about the internal bits?

I have a broken -603 model with a power control fault. Does anyone know if the systemboard from a -201 model will fit into the -603 unit?

Thanks
Pete

Answer:Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100-603

Hello

I am not technician but I have found info that those units have different graphic card and both can not handle with max RAM.

Satellite 5100-201:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 32 MB
- can handle with max 512 MB RAM

Satellite 5100-603:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 64 MB
- can handle with max 1024 MB RAM

I am not 100% sure but if you exchange the whole Mb with all hardware components I believe that other peripheral devices should work well but I don?t know how it will work with BIOS. Maybe the DMI must be rewritten.

On this forum there are few guys with very good knowledge and I hope some of them will post here and say more about that.

I stil use very old Toshiba A350D. Notebook works fine with Office, internet browsing and other light task.
But last days i notice a problem with wifi connection. Well, the card constantly switches off automatically. I use Intel Wifi ProSET tool and Windows 7 system tools.
Windows 7 indicator shown no avilable connections and ProSET indicator shown wifi disabled and ask for turn on wifi with hardware switcher, when hardware switcher (mechanical slider with LED on front) is in the 'on' position and LED flashes.
When this happens, the wifi card is still detected in the Windows device manager. I reinstalled all drivers, but this didn't fix the problem.
The card can be switched on and off several times per minute, but most often when the card is turned off it is hard to activate it again.
Fn + F8 works well, if WiFi Link works properly himself.
Is there still someone who remembers this model and met with such behavior?

Hi,

I have a Toshiba S5100 201 which performed well and the very annoying problem with the Nvidia graphics driver. After much searching on the web, it would appear that a fix to the problem has not been found. If anyone has had better luck than me, please post a message.

When reporting the error to Microsoft an automatic replies states that there are no reported faults, therefore no solution. I searched the Toshiba website and they only have the original driver from 2002.

There are many posts concerning graphics problems with my particular model and several other Toshiba models but no word from Toshiba or Nvidia on the subject. This problem means that I have to shutdown and reboot many times, and often it just packs up without any notice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Toshiba and Nvidia are also included in this request.

Ps I have tried a couple of drivers and am currently using GeForce 4 440

[Edited by: admin]

Answer:Nvidia graphics driver problem on my Satellite 5100

Hi John

Usually you should always use the Toshiba graphic driver because only these drivers are designed for the notebook usage. The NVIDIA graphic driver you can use on the desktop PC.
Well, I found on the Toshiba download site a display driver update version 28.46. I don?t know if you have tried it but please check it.
Furthermore you can also check other Toshiba notebooks with the same graphic card if there is a latest version of the graphic driver.

But I?m not 100% sure if it?s graphic driver problem. Did you check if the recover procedure can solve this issue? If not, well, I think you should check also this possibility.

hi,

i'm trying to use a Express Card ExpressCard/34 To PCMCIA Cardbus Adapter. When i plug it in to my Satellite Pro L40 Windows 7 32bit, installs it as a texas instruments cardbus, cant find a driver then indicates a problem.
Ive downloaded latest drivers from this site for the card reader but no joy.

What should I do?

Answer:Satellite Pro L40 - ExpressCard/34 to PCMCIA indicates a problem

You will need to use Vista drivers (or Win7 drivers if you can find them). Have you tried that?

Also try running WindowsUpdate. It may find a suitable driver.

Hi,

(Sorry for my English)
I've tried to install Windows Vista on my Satellite M40-135. (I've added 512Mb RAM).

But, as all users I've the problem with pcmcia.sys. Vista starts successfully when I remove pcmcia.sys file.
But I've a problem: I've a PCMCIA TV Card and I couldn't use it without the pcmcia.sys file...

So I wondered if Toshiba will upload new drivers for Windows Vista... This laptop is "Vista capable" according to the Microsoft system requirements...

Waiting for your help...

Answer:pcmcia.sys problem with Vista on Satellite M40-135

The notebook is Vista Capable if Toshiba has it on their list for Vista Capable Notebooks. Thats the problem. I think you can wait long for drivers, or forever :(

Hi,

I've got Satellite 5100-603. There have been some dead pixels on display. I don't know is it really dead pixel problem or not because the black area seems to be behind the screen. When i move left and right sides, the black area moves left and right sides too (as if the black area is behind the screen pixels)! And i can tell that all pixels are working OK when i look from the right and left sides of the display (because the pixels that seems to be dead, changes at different looking angles).

Are there really dead pixels or is it some other problem?
Is there anything that i can do about it?

For info, i am using my laptop for 2,5 years and there is no warranty of course...

Thanks for any help..

Answer:Satellite 5100 - Question about dead pixels. Is it really dead pixel problem?

Hello

Due to your description it is not easy to give you a proper answer. On my old notebook I had two dead pixels and it was easy to see them at the boot up process. At the beginning you can see Toshiba welcome screen and dead pixels are usually green (background is black).

Sorry but there is nothing to do. You must live with it because exchanging the display is very expensive.

Hi,

I had to reinstall my notebook with the original recovery CD
on Windows XP Home. I've run the latest updates.

Since I've used several USB devices, the system tells me that
I have to connect that device to a USB 2.0 port to get fastest
connections.

I'm pretty sure I've never had these messages before.

Doesn't my 5100-603 support Enhanced USB?

OR

Which drivers do I have to download and where?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Oliver.

Answer:USB 2.0 on Satellite 5100-603?

Hey Oliver

Such messages are nothing unusual if you connect the high-speed USB 2.0 devices to a notebook with USB 1.1 ports.
Yes, as far as I know the Satellite 5100-603 supports only the USB 1.1 ports and not the USB 2.0
This is a notebook hardware limitation and it cannot be upgraded with any drivers.

I assume you didn?t get any messages in the past because the updates and Microsoft QFE was not installed.
Anyway, nothing wrong with you unit.

I've recently had installed satellite broadband via the Ipstar terminal. This terminal would serve well as an air raid warning siren, the noise the fan makes. There are sites selling quiet computer fans however, before I go further, has anyone done this. Put a cooling fan making less racket in the same terminal I mean.

Answer:Satellite 5100 HDD Password

Hi,

if there's really a HDD password set, it's very bad, because there's no way to remove it.

But maybe it's just some kind of failure. Try to reinstall the system or get access to the HDD from another computer.

I have a Satellite 5100-503 with a GeForce4 440 Go and I recently installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 as fresh install. I tried to play a game that I had installed and played on the other operating system (XP SP1).

When I tried to run it, it sent me a ?Could not run OpenGL? message. Then I browsed your website for drivers. The only problem was that when I checked your driver archives my model was nowhere to be found.

I checked various other unofficial websites for drivers but again without success. After that I tried models that where close to my model, but they didn?t help me, then I tried various force wares with modded .inf, no success either.

All I?m here to ask you is to please send me the drivers or upload them to the internet for download. The last time (a couple of years ago) when I had installed the OS, I downloaded the drivers from your website and it worked perfectly.
I hope you can answer to my problem as soon as possible.

Also I would like to have all the drivers needed for my laptop, for Windows XP SP2.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Need WXP drivers for Satellite 5100-503

All WXP drivers you can find on Toshiba download page but under option ?Product type? choose ARCHIVE.
Install all stuff and when you are finished check for Windows updates. SP2 will be installed and it should run well.

This notebook is pretty old and tested with SP2. Some strange problems are not known to me. For me it is one of the best Toshiba notebooks.

As far as I know under ?Toshiba controls properties? you can set what the SubLCD should show. It can be set to clock or own string. It is not known to me that you can use two different strings and that they can be displayed separately depending on switching on or off.

If you find out how it works please write again.

I had recently bought a new HDD due to problems to the previous one, so the hard disk have nothing in it. But when i thought everything was fixed, i have discovered a new problem.
Every time i turn the computer ON an try to access the boot priority to choose the CD-ROM drive (F12) so i can install the system, nothing happens.
I've already tried different combinations, C (to CD-ROM), DEL, F2, F1, ... nothing happens.
There is a weird thing however: if i turn OFF, and then ON again, with Esc key pressed, the LCD ask for password. I don't even remember if i ever set a password... I've tried many letters and words, and 'x' works; then a message appears: Press [F1] key for default setting, i press F1 and the system runs untill it reach the HDD:
Insert System Disk in the Drive
Press any key when ready...
pressing, only repeat the message

If i turn the computer ON without using Esc, and if use Esc when the TOSHIBA logo appears, don't ask for password, just for the message: Press [F1] key for default setting
and everything loops...

The new HDD its a HITACHI 160Gb and i know the problem its not from the disk

I've already did a search and i think its something about the BIOS, but i don't know for sure.
I'd really appreciate any help you could give.

Answer:Satellite 5100-503 BIOS 'locked' maybe

I don't think the 5100 has a BIOS screen. All you can do is reset the defaults.

If its saying "Insert system disk", that means the operating system has not been installed or there is a problem with the boot sector.

I don't know what the max HDD size is for the 5100, but 160GB might be too large. It may be limited to the 128GB LBA48 limitation ( http://www.48bitlba.com ).

Anyway, holding down 'C' during POST should get it to boot from the CD. Unless the CD Drive is faulty.

Hey all,

I have a HUGE problem with my Satellite 5100-503.

Windows XP is logging on and then it logs off straight away.

I found a fix for this at: [url]http://www.mcse.ms/message616432.html{/url}

The problem is I can't boot from a cd because the BIOS is set to boot from the hard-drive first.

I get into the BIOS. I read on a few places on the net that on Satellite 5xxx machines you can only get into the bios through windows!! BUT....windows isn't working so I can't get into the bios. I can't even use the Windows Installation CD when I boot up, because again the HD is set to boot up first.

When I press ESC while turning on the laptop and then press F1 I get the option to load the BIOS defaults. I've done that but the HD is still set to boot up first!!

What can I do....I can't re-install windows or get into regedit to fix the log on/log off problem!!

HELP!!!!!

Answer:Satellite 5100-503: Not possible to boot from CD drive

Hi Jamie,

Normally you can select a boot device selection menu when you power on your notebook. You can do this by holding the F12 key down when you power on. keep it pressed until the notebook beeps or the device selection menu appears.

If this doesn't work then you could try the usual Toshiba short-cut which is to hold the 'C' key down during the power on which should then cause the notebook to boot from the CD drive. Obviously there has to be a bootable CD inserted first.

My Satellite 5100-503 shows garbled image during startup particularly when the computer is warm.
The sound also breaks.

It was diagnosed as a display card problem. The card has nVidia GeForce4 440 Go chip.
What is the equivalent card available in the market or any reliable source?

Answer:Satellite 5100-503 - I need a new graphic card

As far as I know the graphic card can not be exchanged. It?s soldered on the mainboard and so you need a new mainboard.
Are you sure that is a graphic card issue? Do you have the same issue on an external monitor? Check this!

Maybe the notebook gets to hot so try to clean it with compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust.

Hi,

I have a Satellite 5100-201 P4-M 1.6 Ghz with 30Gb IDE HDD and 1024Mb RAM. I use my "good old" Satellite only for Music (the greatest sound found on notebooks!) but now my HDD has become a bit weak.

So my question is if there's any limitation of HDD-Size for this notebook. I would like to buy a IDE 120GB or 160GB HDD with 5400rpm and 8MB Cache. If that would not be possible I can also take the 80GB HDD (some other threads say it works), but the bigger the better!

Thanks for your help!

greetings,
fab

Answer:Satellite 5100-201 - Limitation of HDD size

Hi buddy,

I think the maximum HDD capacity would be 120GB because the notebook has a 28bit LBA limitation. That means only HDDs up to 128GB can be used so 120GB would be the maximum. 5400rpm and 8MB cache are ok.

By the way: It?s nice to read that you are still so satisfied with old Satellite 5200 :)

Answer:Satellite 5100-201: Five Keys: "9-O-L-.-Del" do not work

Hi,

in most cases the problem is that there is some dirt on the contacts of the keys.
You should remove them and clean it, and check the connector of the keyboard.
If this doesn't help the keyboard probably is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Answer:What HDDs are supported for Satellite 5100-201

Hi

Very strange? did you use a compatible 40GB HDD?
In my knowledge the notebook should be able to recognize the 40GB HDD.
As far as I know the 30 GB HDD which was installed is a Toshiba MK3017GAP and the computer supports a 20, 30, 40 or 60 GB HDDs.

I think these HDD should be compatible:
Toshiba HDD2171B 40GB HDD
HITACHI G8BC00009110 40GB HDD
Toshiba HDD2183B 60GB

PS: The strange noise coming from the HDD could be the ?beginning of the end?
So make a data backup.

Hi

I was given an I-pod for Christmas but when I connect it up am told that I need a Hi-Speed USB port which this model doesn't feature. Message comes up saying that I need to get a Hi-Speed USB Host Controller - any advice on which would be the best one for the job gratefully received.

Thanks
Ju

Answer:I need a Hi-Speed USB port on Satellite 5100-503

I am not sure if your Laptop supports USB version 2.0. Sometimes there are USB 1.0 AND USB 2.0 ports available on notebooks. Try to change to a different port and see if the "Hi speed USB..." message will show up again.

In case your Laptop is only fitted with USB 1.0 ports, then you can still use your I-pod on those USB ports. The only disadvantage is the slow speed for the File-transfer and the message that pops up telling you "This device can run faster...blablabla". If you can live with this, your problem is solved.

A better solution would be to buy a USB 2.0 adaptor for PCMCIA. These adaptors plug on the side of your notebook and provide you two or four additional USB 2.0 ports. You can find such an adaptor in every proper computershop or through ebay:
http://search.ebay.de/pcmcia-USB

As I said, I am NOT sure if your Laptop has USB2.0 support. Cause if it does, then you might be missing some drivers.

Good luck

I have a Satellite 5100-201.
Recently, a screen problem surfaced: first images outlined get blurred, then stripes appear, usually the screen collapses to provisional modus. I noticed that the notebook gets really hot and I thought this must be a problem of overheating.

I vacuum-cleaned the notebook, I even opened it and checked that the fan turns properly. Afterwards, the notebook worked one time, the fan did run constantly and the notebook did not get heated.

The next day, the problem surfaced again and this time I got even a black screen. Now, the notebook boots normally when I turn it on, but I know that after a while it is gonna get hot again.

Ah, I also updated the driver for the graphic card, but it did not help. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite 5100-201: overheating after several time

To protect from the overheating the CPU has a n internal temperature sensor. If the computer?s internal temperature rises to a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or the processing speed is lowered. Use the cooling method item of the basic setup in the Toshiba power saver.

Furthermore it is very important that you use the notebook in the right position. The area near to the cooling module grilles must be free because the fan must ?take a breath?.
It?s important for the fresh air circulation.

There it stopped working.
What I did: Closed the notebook after work (everything ok) and leaved it alone for a while. When I opend the notebook again to continue working nothing happend.
Only the small frontdisplay showed me a spinning CD (no CD inserted) and the battery status display. After pressing the on-button the on-sign appeared but nothing happened again. Pressing the button again (for some seconds) made the on-sign dissapear. No display, no fan, no harddisk noise in any case (ono/off). Inserting an audio CD and pessing the play-button works! Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Do you know if I can replace the drive for a DVD rewriter? And if yes - what model?

Answer:Need suggestion about optical drive for Satellite 5100-503

Hi Piotr,

You can replace your CD re-writer with vurtually any DVD burner that is the same physical size, but you will need to make sure that the new burner has a similar configuration set-up to your current drive.

Typically the drive will be configured as Master, Slave or Cable Select (Csel), by the manufacturer and this must match the configuration of your current drive. One of the Nero tools will show you how the current drive is configured.

Unfortunately, most retailers do not show the configuration and with the slim-line drives there are no dip switches which you can use to change it.

Hi,

I'm currently owner of a Toshiba Satellite 5100-603. The problem is the video card. But i can't find a new or second hand video card for this laptop anywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to look for this card or perhaps has one spare or with the problem i described a few lines back (lines and flickering in your screen).

Answer:Satellite 5100-603: Where to find a new graphic card?

Try on eBay. There you can find many notebook parts. Google a little bit. For new parts is no problem to find them but second hand parts??

Is it possible to upgrade the processor in my satellite 5110,its a p4 1.8m and i would like to put somthing faster in.If so does anyone know the maximum speed it might take, and which type/model of pentium it will need.I guess intel only made a couple of mobile m processors back then??
Mine is a '5110' from australia.

Answer:Satellite 5110/5100 series - Can I upgrade the CPU?

Hi

Generally the CPU upgrade is not possible because of different connection to the mainboard. I really don?t know the details of your unit but if you have time you can call service in your country and pick up some info.

By the way: in the case that something like that is possible are you able to do this alone?

I once had downloaded a whole bunch of fixes for the Satellite 5100, but through bad circumstance I lost the files.

When I search for Satellite 5100 fixes now I can find only ONE for the Bluetooth stack. The whole download search hasn?t been really working for YEARS now. The selection doesn?t stay on the selected product and some time ago you got all kinds of product- and OS-unrelated stuff. Nowadays you get almost nothing for older products.

I bought a 2GB micro-SD-card with SD adapter and the 5100 canīt handle it. (I intentionally sticked with 2Gigs and avoided a SDHC card)

I know there was a driver update for the card reader!!!
HEEELP!!!

Answer:Satellite 5100 SD-card-reader -> new drivers!?

Hey buddy,

wheres the problem?? I took a look on the driver site and the drivers (SD-Card Host Controller, etc.) are full available.

I choosed on the driver site Archive -> Satellite -> Satellite 51xx and then everything was there.

Please take a look and if your model has nothing then go to another model of the 5100 series because they are all similar machines.

My harddisk in my Satellite 5100 broke down and I want to change it.

According to various messages in the forum, it is not possible to boot the 5100 from a CD when there is a (new) harddisk in the machine. And the only way to change the boot sequence is via Windows - which does not work anymore - there is no other way to change BIOS parameters than inside Windows.

I have looked in the manual - I cannot find any mentioning of pressing F12 or C or any other combination to change boot sequence (I have of course tried nevertheless to no avail). The only thing one I have found possible is to press ESC + F1 to _restore_ default BIOS settings. And powering up pressing the key left of the space bar gives me the possibility of flashing a new BIOS.

Is it really so? Since that would mean I'm stuck. And in that case I'll simply save the money for the new harddisk and throw out my laptop... (and probably by another brand next time - but I sincerely hope it isn't so...)

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Thomas

Answer:Satellite 5100-503: Changing HDD and booting questions

Oookay. So after pressing F12 at boot time I have to use the _cursor_ keys to move the thin line that looked like an error symbol beneath the graphical symbols, I should have guessed that...

Sigh. I liked the old text approach better.

Anyway. I'm now booting from the CD and I'm installing windows on my new HDD, happy happy.

Hi,

a friend of mine has ruined his Toshiba Satellite 5100.
He erased all partition on the hard drive while the laptop still using the default setting,
so I couldn't boot from cd or enter the BIOS.
Is there any solution for this??

Thanks

Answer:Can not enter BIOS or boot from CD - Satellite 5100

Hi Veenone,

Erasing the partition on the hard drive would have the same effect as formatting, but you should still be able to boot as far as loading the BIOS (this is normally where the Toshiba screen appears with the boot options), before you see an error along the lines of "HDD:0 .....", although this error may be different according to boot options etc.

You should be able to re-install Windows from a recovery CD.

Could you tell us any error messages you are seeing or any other screens or options etc?

Hi there!
I own a 5 years old Sat. 5100-201 which worked just fine until today.
Now I experiance problems with the graphic card as I guess, the screen is flickering and distorted and then I mosztly get a blue screen which tells that the graphic
card drivers is running into a loop.

I have a dual boot system, so I checked it on both win xp installations and it's the same problem on both, so it seems to be a real hardware prob.!
So I think I have a graphic card problem, but as far as I know, the chip is fixed on the motherboard and is not replacable, is that right?
Is there any workaround which I can do to make sure what the problem is?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello

When you bought your Satellite notebook didn?t you get a remote control? If not then the unit is not prepared to use remote control. You can also check the user?s manuals.

As far as I know all units that have remote control have installed a small application called ?Controls?. Check in control panel if you can find something like that.

I have also tried pressing esc to enter the bios. When I press esc I get asked for the password I created along time ago. When I have entered the password all that shows on the screen is "Press F1 to enter normal setup" or something like that, so I don't seen to be able to enter the bios.

Does anyone know a solution to my problem? I need to change the boot sequence

I need an update for the graphic driver of a laptop toshiba satellite 5100-503, the nvidia geforce4 440 Go, which you cannot get on the nvidia site, where are no mobile systems to get.

This old notebook model is definitely not supported anymore and on Toshiba support page you cannot find any update. What you can do is to search around to find notebook with the same graphic card but maybe with newer driver and try to install it.

Why you have disassembled the LCD?

To be honest I don?t know what cables you mean have you also connected the FL inverter to LCD display? This is necessary because FL inverter controls the backlight of your display.

Hello,
I have just replaced a dead main board of a satellite 5100-603 with a new main board which I could get from ebay (Toshiba System-Board FNZSY2 - Part-No. P000341750 A5A000160010). If I boot with a XP installation DVD it starts up but hangs with the message "unexpected error (536674392) in line 1768 in D:\xpspi\base\boot\set-up\arcdisp.c"

I realized that there are different bios versions for different satellite 5100 models. I think I have to flash the latest 5100-603 bios to solve this problem.
Is this correct? (booting with BART-PE from CD or BART-PE from harddisk triggers the same error msg text in a differnt look)

to get your mainboard to work you have to write the UUID (Universal Unique Identifier) on it.
As far as I know you can get the UUID write tool from a service partner of Toshiba.

Hy,

I'm experiencing trouble with video on a Satellite 5100/201. It seems that when I press on the left side above the graphics card or press a key on the keyboard on that side, the screen starts to be scrambled and vertical lines appear. At the end windows XP resets giving a critical error on the device and the video passes to 640x480. Same thing occurs when running Linux Suse 9.0.

My doubt is what is the cause: the graphics card corrupted or overheating due to the fan not as efficient as originally (my laptop is almost two years old. Did someone succed in finding the cause and resolved the problem, also with the Toshiba assistance?
Any help welcome.

I am not 100% sure but I think that your unit has no LAN card and you must use some other solution like PCMCIA card.

As far as I know your unit is delivered with Windows ME and I really don?t believe that hardware configuration is not the best one for WXP (not much RAM) and I believe that unit will be very slow.

I plan to replace the failing CDRW/DVD-drive in my Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 (european version, it was sold as 5105 in the US and other countries).
The built-in drive is a UJDA730.
As upgrade I consider the highly regarded a Slimline DVD+/-RW drive. Unfortunately, some research on the internet revealed that upgrading a notebook's optical drive is not as straightforward as one might hope. I had no trouble removing my old drive (you only have to remove the keyboard and unscrew two screws), so I consider myself capable of putting in an new drive instead. However, two problems remain:

-mechanical compatibily: The 6500A appears to have a different front bezel layout. Its eject button and LED are in a different position than that of my current drive, so I doubt I will be able to use my old bezel with the other one. In addition, the bezel of my old drive has a recess in the lower right corner (similar to that found on some Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks), which gives room for the volume control of the notebook. So I cannot reuse the old bezel, and the NEC's bezel will probably not allow me to close the drive's tray. I wonder if some Dremel-work on the plastic parts of the NEC drive will allow me to fit it in physically. Has anybody tried that?

-electronical compatibility: notebook drives generally do not have jumpers to change their Master/Slave/cable select configuration. Instead this is set within the firmware, so changing it requires flashing a new firmware, which is not ea... Read more

Hi all

After I accidentally served some coke for my satellite 5100-503, it went totally dead. My bro managed to clean it up, and it started. But soon after that it turned itself of, and just gave this error message by flashing the front power led: 4x SHORT, 1x LONG, 3x SHORT

I managed to interpret that by the help of certain web site. It is a hex-code 10h, and means: "AC Adaptor output voltage is more than 16.5 V."

And here is what they recommend to do, if AC adapter is ok (and it is, I have checked):

After checking the connection, perform the following:
Check 1
Replace the AC adaptor with a new one. If the AC adaptor is still not functioning properly, perform Check 2.
Check 2
Use a multimeter to make sure that the F8800 fuse on the System board is not blown. If the fuse is not blown, go to Check 3. If the fuse is blown, go to Check 6.
Check 3
Use a multimeter to make sure that the F1000 fuse on the Battery board is not blown. If the fuse is not blown, go to Check 4. If the fuse is blown, replace the Battery board with a new one following the instructions in Chapter 4.
Check 4
Make sure that the Battery board cables are firmly connected to PJ8820 and PJ8821 on the System board and to PJ1000 and PJ1001 on the battery board. If they are connected firmly, go to Check 5.
Check 5
The Battery board or System board may be damaged. Replace it with a new one following the instructions in Chapter 4.

I have a Satellite 5100-501 which uses the NVIDIA GeForce 440 Go display adaptor.

Without changing any settings, the display stopped working about two weeks ago. Many other users have had the same problem (see http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=5&t=49116), but nobody has yet been able to explain nor fix the problem. The best that can be done is to disable the driver, which means that the "suspend" function on the laptop no longer works, and leaves me with interference on the screen.

One theory is that a Windows Update has caused the problem. Reinstalling any number of drivers (including those recommended by NVIDIA and Toshiba) doesn't work.

This is a very irritating problem... can anyone help?

Hi

First of all the M4 I don?t understand why there is a conflict between the PCMCIA drivers and Vista!
The drivers are included in the Vista OS so how did you remove such drivers and how did you install the Vista on this notebook?

Furthermore the notebook supports the PC card slot and you can use the PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card 16(multi-function card) and PCMCIA 32bit cards. The BIOS controls this slot.

Maybe you have to update the BIOS before you will install the Vista on this unit!!!

Furthermore you can check in the BIOS the option ?PC card?. Try to change the controller mode to ?PCIC Compatible? or ?CardBus/16 bit? and try to boot from the PCMCIA card again.
To change these settings you have to change firstly the ?Device Config? to ?All devices?

Hi

Hope someone can help. Girl friend was a little careless and broke the PCMCIA eject button off when putting her Satellite A30 away.

Can't get a card to go into the slot anymore so it looks like a replacement is needed.

So the question is how do I go about replacing the PCMCIA mechanism? I tried removing all the cover screws but there must be some well hidden fixings as I couldn't get the casing off to expose it.

Any suggestions for where I could source a replacement part in the UK? Likely cost?

Cheers
Steve

Answer:PCMCIA slot broken Satellite A30

It?s very pity to hear that.
The PCMCIA slot is ?hidden? inside the notebook and it?s not easy to replace it for someone without any experience.
So I think you should really ask someone with more notebook experience for fixing.

It?s a little bit risky to change anything on the motherboard and you know a common user like me or you could damage something.

Therefore contact a ASP in your country or an notebook service point and ask for the costs. Don?t think it?s much expensive.

Hello

I have been given a TOSHIBA Satellite 1730 CDT computer ; it is impossible to read an USB key or a external storage harddisc (excuse my english, I am French and do not know all the specific terms in data processing) the system does not recognize the material

What have I to do ? the computer is dating from 2003
Furthermore, would you please be kind enough to tell me where I can buy PCMCIA card for this kind of equipment ?
Thank you very much for your help

Monique

Answer:PCMCIA card for Satellite 1730CDT needed

Hi

According to this page the Toshiba Satellite 1730CDTsupports the PC Card Slots: 2 Type II or 1 Type III CardBus PC Card slots
http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=223&product=1552

I recommend searching in internet for some online stores which provide a PCMCIA card Type II (16bit) or Type III CardBus PC Card (32bit).

According to your USB issue:
I recommend reinstalling the chipset driver for this notebook.
The chipset controls the USB ports so usually the driver installation should help.

I recently picked a A200-1A9 from London and currently using it in India. And i realise that i cannot use my wireless PCMCIA card from the mobile operators for the internet connectivity.

There is no option for the card to slide in.
Am i missing something? Or is this a simple matter of not_ enough_search_before_buy scenario? Help.

Hi

If you don?t see any PCMCIA slots then there is no slot present!!!
Very simply? ;)

?.. but you are right. This notebook series does not support PCMCIA slot. There should be only a slot for the express cards.

Sorry but there is nothing to do!

Hi all,

I have an old SP 4360.
Does anyone know if a BIOS upgrade to 2.70 will allow me booting off a SSD inserted into the Cardbus pc card slot?
Right know the Bios only recognizes DVD, HDD and FLOPPY as boot devices.

Second issue:
I have confllicting info about max. RAM size. Some sources say 320mb max while the (online) manual states 576mb max. Someone know if 576mb is really supported?

Answer:Satellite Pro 4360 - Booting from SSD via Cardbus (PCMCIA) possible?

Hi

Please check this threads:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=82016

Please note that memory upgrade depends on the notebook?s chipset.
You can check the chipset of the Sat Pro 4360 notebook and could search for details on the Intel page (I assume it?s Intel chipset).

Regarding booting from SSD;
I doubt a BIOS update would allows booting from external SSD? usually such old notebook were able to boot from CD, HDD or FDD only?

WE HAVE AN SATELLITE 4060XCDT LAPTOP WITH WINDOWS 98SE WE HAD A LAPTOP ADAPTER WHICH WAS TAKEN OUT FOR SAFETY, WHEN WE TRIED TO PUT IT BACK FOUND AN ERROR 28. BELIEVE THIS MEANS DRIVER/S MISSING ON LOOKING IN DEVICE MANAGER UNDER PCMCIA SOCKET THERE IS A PCIC COMPATIBLE PCMCIA CONTROLLER WITH AN EXCLAMATION MARK IN YELLOW.

NOT VERY TECHNICALLY MINDED OK ON THE BASICS SO NOT SURE IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT COULD BE CORRECTED WITH DRIVERS, OR WHETHER IT'S SOMETHING MORE SERIOUSLY WRONG. THERE ARE NO INSTALLATION DISCS TO TRY AS SOFTWARE ALREADY INSTALLED & WINDOWS 98 SE IS OLD & NOT SUPPORTED ANYMORE BY MICROSOFT.

WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR ADVICE ON WHETHER THERE IS A WAY OF CORRECTING THIS & HOW TO REPAIR IF POSSIBLE & IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT WE COULD DO TO GIVE THE LAPTOP A LONGER LIFE.

Which adapter? AC adapter? Safety? What are you writing about?
Is this notebook preinstalled with Toshiba recovery disc or you have installed OS on your own?
Have you installed all drivers from Toshiba download page?

I have checked Toshiba page and Win98 drivers are available?

Hi

The PCMCIA Controller on my Satellite A100-326 laptop is from Texas instruments but I can't find the exact model or the Toshiba drivers for it.
It says the driver is from Microsoft. I would like to try the one from texas.

I'm trying this because I bought a PCMCIA - parallel card and I must change the port address for the lpt1, because I have software that writes to the physical address of 0378 of the lpt1 port.

Since vista doesn't let me do this, I thought about use vmware but when I try to install the PCMCIA card it asks for drivers I don't have...

Thank you

Ricardo

Answer:Satellite A100 - Which drivershould I install for PCMCIA?

Hello

Separate driver for PCMCIA slot does not exist and if you install right chipset driver the port should work properly and be ready for use. That also means that PCMCIA entries in device manager should be listed as ?properly installed?. That?s the fact.

So if you have bought some PCMCIA card and can not use it, please be sure you have right driver for this card and for any further problem contact PCMCIA card manufacturer.

Hi guys. One question.

In a Toshiba Satellite M40X-105 which has a Type II pcmcia card slot, will this wireless card ZYXEL Wireless Lan Card G-170S 802.11g CardBus, work? CardBus card is only compatible with type II 32bit card slots right?

Does the laptop have a 32 or 16 bit card? Thanks

Answer:Satellite M40x-105 - PCMCIA wireless LAN card

Hey,

Generally speaking I don?t see a reason why it should not work? PCMCIA slot = PC card slot.
Only express cards don?t work because express card is the successor of PCMCIA.

Alternative you can buy an USB stick with WLAN functionality if you prefer this way. ;)

Good day all,

I have an old Old Toshiba Satellite Pro 460CDX that belongs to my dad and bought him a DLink 32bit PCMCIA LAN card (model# DFE-690TXD), the laptop won't recognize it. After speeking with DLink and Toshiba, I got several suggestions, none have worked. I upgraded the BIOS and Win95 with the available downloads from Toshiba's support section. They think that the laptop doesn't support 32bit., but they were not positive.

Is there something anyone knows that I can try ?

I heard that there some 3rd party software that might do the trick ...

Thanks to all.

Answer:Satellite 3000-504: PCMCIA card does not work

Hi,

did you installed all chipset drivers properly? Usually the PCMCIA bridge gets it driver automatically from windows, but I guess that there mut be some additional drivers be installed.
Check the [Drivers Download site|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp]
from the Toshiba website and check for some driver updates or drivers you don?t have installed.

Another good idea would be to update your BIOS if not already did and set everything to default. Maybe theres just some false setting..

Would appreciate to hear some feedback from you regarding your problem...

OK i have a problem with my Satellite Pro A120's (xp service pack 2) cardbus.

I use the cardbus slot to add firewire conections via a IEEE 1394 cardbus card and have been doing this a long time. The other night my comp went into hibernate with the card still in the slot and still in use and when i tried to use it the next day the card was not working at all.
So i thought the had died on me and brought another one, this one to be exact [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839314003] .

When i plug the new card into the slot windows starts the installation add new hardware thing but does not find the driver, there is none on the provided CD and it does not conect to windows update to find one ethier. So the new card does not work and does not get installed, it just shows up with ! next to pci device.

I have looked everywhere on the internet to find the driver, read the manual etc.I even did a fresh install of windows so it might find the drivers but nope.
The only thing i can think of is the slot does not except 32 bit cardbus but in my manual it says this:

"The computer is equipted with a pc card slot that can accomedate a type II card. Any pc card that meets industry standards can be installed. The slot supports 16 bit pc cards, including pc cards 16 multifunction card and cardbus pc cards. Cardbus supports a new standard of 32 bit pc cards."

Any help please

Thanks

Hi

Try to change some settings in the BIOS.
In the configuration area you can set the option ?device config? to ALL Devices.
Furthermore in the area ?PC card? you can try to change the option to PCIC compatible or CardBus/ 16-bit.

Play around with these settings and check if one of this will enable the card.

Hi there

I have an SPA40 and it appears that the PCMCIA slot has stopped working.
I had a Netgear WN511b wireless network adapter plugged into and working fine.
Came back to the laptop after a couple of hours and everything had frozen up. Rebotted and got a *IDE 1 error* and since then the card has not worked.

I have tested the card in another laptop and it seems to function fine and therefore assume the slot has become faulty. I have looked at the device manger and everything appears t be working fine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could try to solve this problem.

Many thanks, in anticipation.

Answer:PCMCIA slot has stopped working on Satellite Pro A40

Hi

I wonder about the error message.
The error message IDE #1 says that the device connected to IDE #1 controller has not been recognized by BIOS.
In most cases the CD/DVD drive is connected to such IDE controller and therefore your CD/DVD drive should not be recognized.

In your case I would recommend accessing the BIOS and then to set the BIOS settings back to default.

But I?m not quite sure if this would help you because in most cases such issue appears due to a hardware problem?. And in most cases the affected hardware part must be replaced.

I have problems with my pcmcia compact flash adapter. The actual speed of reading is only 700kb\sec. That is very slow.

How can I speed it up?

Answer:Pcmcia read speed with Satellite U-series

Hi eugene,

try to reinstall the drivers for the chipset of your machine and the drivers for the adapter (if some are available, must not be!!!).

Otherwise try a another PCMCIA/Cardbus card where you can measure the speed. If the speed is the same after reinstalling all drivers and so, then try a biosupdate.
Btw, you can make the biosupdate regardless if you try the adapter or something else.

Good luck

It should work OK that way, but I don't think that is your original problem. Be careful you could end up with a broken computer. Perhaps you should email your service provider for help.

If you have ran Recovery to reinstall Windows back to its factory state, and you have installed the latest BIOS, then its likely to be a hardware problem. Perhaps the Southbridge on the mainboard has failed.

If this card needs some driver you will not find it on notebook manufacturer download page. You must check card producer site.

Like you know in the world of computers there are defined different standards. Very often cheap products are not designed for those standards and you can have different problems. I recommend you to use high quality product.
