I plan to replace the failing CDRW/DVD-drive in my Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 (european version, it was sold as 5105 in the US and other countries).
The built-in drive is a UJDA730.
As upgrade I consider the highly regarded a Slimline DVD+/-RW drive. Unfortunately, some research on the internet revealed that upgrading a notebook's optical drive is not as straightforward as one might hope. I had no trouble removing my old drive (you only have to remove the keyboard and unscrew two screws), so I consider myself capable of putting in an new drive instead. However, two problems remain:
-mechanical compatibily: The 6500A appears to have a different front bezel layout. Its eject button and LED are in a different position than that of my current drive, so I doubt I will be able to use my old bezel with the other one. In addition, the bezel of my old drive has a recess in the lower right corner (similar to that found on some Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks), which gives room for the volume control of the notebook. So I cannot reuse the old bezel, and the NEC's bezel will probably not allow me to close the drive's tray. I wonder if some Dremel-work on the plastic parts of the NEC drive will allow me to fit it in physically. Has anybody tried that?
-electronical compatibility: notebook drives generally do not have jumpers to change their Master/Slave/cable select configuration. Instead this is set within the firmware, so changing it requires flashing a new firmware, which is not easy to come by and hard to do if your drive is not even recognized. SO I need to find out whether my notebooks needs the optical drive set to master, slave. cable select or "inverse cable select". Can anyone help me here, either by own experience or by directing me to an appropriate source on the web?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hi,
at first the CD drive in a Satellite 5100 is fixed mounted and only replaceable with the same model! So another modell could work, but as you see the bezel don't fits and perhaps the new drive doesn't fit to 100%! So you will have problems all the way!
What do you think about an external solution via USB or Firewire! This is the better way to upgrade!
Bye chris
I have a Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 (AKA 5100-503 in Europe apparently) and am replacing the HDD for a client after a hard crash.
The unit is an older model that shipped with Windows XP.
Toshiba download site lists only XP/2000 drivers but given its age that is no surprise.
Has anyone attempted to install Windows 7 on this model?
TIA!
If you google the model number + Install Win7 it isn't very encouraging.
You may have to insert the IDE controller driver if prompted so it will detect HD and install. From there it may take workarounds and coaxing, or it may install straightaway for you to test drive it to see how performance pans out.
I enjoy the challenge to make these things work. I don't know if you have the time or patience.
We're here to help if you need it.
Instruction for Satellite 5100-503 says that max. RAM capacity this notebook can works is 512 MB. This is strange for me. Why I can't upgrade memory in my notebook, this is efficency but 512 MB is too less for me. I use Windows XP Prof. with many programs, that's why I need more memory. Additional distributor of Toshiba notebooks in my country clamis that this model can works with 1GB RAM. I do not really know who has right. Help me, please.
Hi emifer,
This Machine can run up to 1024 Mb Ram (PC2100DDR-RAM) !
The Order Code for Toshiba 512 Mb Ram is PA3164U.

So your Toshiba Laptop Keyboard isn't working like it should?
Whether your keyboard problem resulted from liquid spill, a hard bump, or you simply wore it out, you don't have to worry about investing in a new laptop, you can fix your keyboard problems with a simple swap. The good news is that fixing a Keyboard does not take much technical skill. In fact, Keyboards are among the easiest laptops to repair.
Remove the bezel just above the keyboard. You will notice a tin strip of plastic located just above the keyboard. This strip is called the keyboard bezel and you remove it by gently prying the edge up with your small standard screwdriver. Work your way across the bezel lifting it as you go. The bezel is a snap in unit so be sure to be gentle, as you work your way across.
Remove the Toshiba G83C000872 Laptop Keyboards screws. With the bezel removed, you will find three or four screws at the top of the keyboard. Using your small Philips head screw driver, remove these screws and place them in a safe spot where you will not lose them.
Remove the keyboard. With the screws removed, gently lift the keyboard from top to bottom. You will notice a ribbon of wires connected from the keyboard to the laptop. Lean the keyboard forward so that you can access the ribbon wire connection.
Remove the ribbon wire. Take your standard screw driver and gently push up the bracket locks on both sides of the ribbon wire socket. These bracket locks slide up slightly as you push to r... Read more
Thanks for instruction.
1 more repliesMy 5100 notebook is running very slow and I can hear the drive being accessed very regularly and it is affecting playback of media whilst doing other tasks. Even after reimaging with the CDs that came with it it does not improve much.
I'm assuming the drive is dying, but open to suggestions. Out of interest would it make a difference if you had everything on one large partition or multiple ones?
According to Device Manager the drive is a MK6021GAS. Some questions for anyone with the expertise to answer...
1) Must I replace this with the same Toshiba drive?
2) Can I replace it with a larger drive?
3) Has anyone replaced these drives successfully?
4) Any recommendations on where to purchase?
BTW this laptop was bought in Australia if it makes any difference.
Many thanks,
Richard
Hi
1) You must not buy exactly the same HDD but it is always recommended to use compatible module.
2) Theoretically yes. . I think that 60 GB is really enough for this unit but I believe that 80 GB HDD should be recognized properly.
3) Drive replacement is very easy and you can do it alone. At the bottom side, near the battery pack, you will find HDD cover. I am not sure but it is fixed with one screw. Remove it carefully and you will see how the HDD is placed there.
4) Google a little bit. You will find a lot of offerors. You can also buy it in every PC store. eBay is also an alternative solution.
I just had my toshiba satellite 2410, pentium 4, xp-sp2, mobile processor,512 RAM, 40 gigs into the authorize warranty depot for a replacement of the mouse pad as the warranty was almost up.
It is now over. (this was May 23) I had called a week and a half earlier, however they said the parts were delayed and did not arrive until the day before my warranty was up.
I had to go in for medical surgery directly after and did not use the computer until this past week and noticed when I took the notebook down to my software techie who was removing Norton Systemworks for me as I don't how to do it cleanly, that my BIOS password was not in place.
He tried to replace it, however it would not set.
I phoned the warranty depot and I am not a tech oriented person and know little about BIOS and I should say that my software techie called them as well.
I should say that I have used this software techie since I have owned the computer and he knew that I had a BIOS password and so he discussed the issue with the warranty depot tech who replaced my mouse pad.
The tech replied that he did not touch my main board and thus it was not his fault and he told my software techie to have me call him, which I did.
I told him that I noticed that he did not boot my computer in front of me when he had me test the mousepad, that he brought out my notebook from the back room repair station and had me check out the mouse pads which worked fine and then he also mentioned that he had looked at my PCMCIA... Read more

This is a Toshiba satellite 5105 Laptop with windows xp SP3 now that installed all of the updates. Here's the problem: When you restart it, it starts up really slow, I keep changing the desktop background and when I restart it, it won't save the background it goes back to the previous background, Then there will only be the background it will take a good five minutes or more before the desktop loads. I won't save anything on IE either.
Heidi
I replaced the hd( bought it from New Egg-Great place BTW!) and it worked fine-gave back to my buddy and he tells me it's acting weird.......said when he install MS office it started this.
The problem:
1. video erratic and will not even boot to desktop.
2. while reformatting the screen looks like broken lines and snow.
3. tapping touchpad or anywhere around it seems to change this erratic colors and lines.
4. can barely read dos commands due to erratic lines
5. now video has darker blue vertical lines about 1" apart & hangs @ "please wait while windows starts" during last stage of reformatting.
6. it also does this when I hook up my 20" LCD to it.
Does this sound like a bad video board? or seems to me maybe this was dropped or something? Forgot to mention this LT also has had a charging problem but worked fine on AC. I think the B/C board is bad- could this contribut to this also??
any help on this? I'm a little miffed @ how this was working so good with XP Home SP2 with no signs of a video problem to this. then again I don't have alot of laptop expertise.
Thanks for any help with this-it is appreciated!
This is either a bad system board, or a bad video graphics card, and not uncommon on certain new models of Toshiba. But NewEgg will help you with it.
Hey all,
I have a HUGE problem with my Satellite 5100-503.
Windows XP is logging on and then it logs off straight away.
I found a fix for this at: [url]http://www.mcse.ms/message616432.html{/url}
The problem is I can't boot from a cd because the BIOS is set to boot from the hard-drive first.
I get into the BIOS. I read on a few places on the net that on Satellite 5xxx machines you can only get into the bios through windows!! BUT....windows isn't working so I can't get into the bios. I can't even use the Windows Installation CD when I boot up, because again the HD is set to boot up first.
When I press ESC while turning on the laptop and then press F1 I get the option to load the BIOS defaults. I've done that but the HD is still set to boot up first!!
What can I do....I can't re-install windows or get into regedit to fix the log on/log off problem!!
HELP!!!!!
Hi Jamie,
Normally you can select a boot device selection menu when you power on your notebook. You can do this by holding the F12 key down when you power on. keep it pressed until the notebook beeps or the device selection menu appears.
If this doesn't work then you could try the usual Toshiba short-cut which is to hold the 'C' key down during the power on which should then cause the notebook to boot from the CD drive. Obviously there has to be a bootable CD inserted first.

Hello, can anyone please tell me if i can change my celeron B820 processor with some other at least bit better processor
More repliesHi,
I have a bit of trouble with CDRW/DVD drive for Toshiba Sat 5100-503. It writes about 1 in 5 CDRs and only if I write < 400MB of data. I tried cleaning the lens - no help. Tried both Win XP writing software and NERO - no difference.
Do you know if I can replace the drive for a DVD rewriter? And if yes - what model?
Hi Piotr,
You can replace your CD re-writer with vurtually any DVD burner that is the same physical size, but you will need to make sure that the new burner has a similar configuration set-up to your current drive.
Typically the drive will be configured as Master, Slave or Cable Select (Csel), by the manufacturer and this must match the configuration of your current drive. One of the Nero tools will show you how the current drive is configured.
Unfortunately, most retailers do not show the configuration and with the slim-line drives there are no dip switches which you can use to change it.

My daughter's Toshiba A135-7404 got stepped on and broke the screen (15.4".)
I've done some searching for screens on fleabay and found new screens for sale. All of the screens say that they are for an A135 but there are many versions of the A135, i.e. my daughter's A135-7404.
Does anyone know if all the A135s use the same 15.4" screen?

If you can get the part number from the bad panel, it can be compared to the list below. You shouldn't have a problem getting the right part.

Hello
How can I know if my toshiba is brand new or used?
by checking if it came in the box sealed?
if not then its probably been used once there is no other way of checking rly.
Unfortunately my hard drive failed when I was out of town and had to have my family take it in. I had backup files I created with the spotmau program that had both the C and D drive letters. I now only have a C drive listed and am unsure what to do. I am not very experienced with the deep end of the partion stuff. I have been using the laptop for a month now and have transfered as much of the fileinfo that they were able to save. I don,t want to do a restore if it will mess up what I have now but I am concerned that I will not be able to save properly for recovery later. I am trying to get to a point that I can create a hd image to save for the next crisis. I have a 320GB HD in the Laptop and a 500GB external drive That I would like to create the image on and then set to the side for that day when I have to restore to a new HD again. I am looking for some guidance so that I will have the ability to do this stuff myself. The HD hardware is not reliable as you folks probably already know. Even with the warranty it still costs alot of money. Thanks in advance for your help. Beryla

My Toshiba satellite notebook won't boot for some reason. It lights up, but I get no screen and no hard drive activity. It won't boot even with the recovery disc in, however it will still play c.d.s'. I'm running xp with a p4. This just happened with no warning. Anyone have similar experience and resolution?
Can you enter the bios and see if your hard drive is recognized and that your cd is set as first boot device?

I have Toshiba Satellite A210-16F notebook and it doesn't want to turn off sometimes.
It gets to the "Shutting down" window, but it wont shut down and stays like that until I shut it down manually by holding the POWER button.
What could be a reason of this problem?
Inherited a Toshiba Satellite P10 Notebook. Successfully rebuilt and working fine.
However, two shortcut buttons to the right of the keyboard are inactive and i can't see anything in the manual that tells me how to activate them.
The buttons are one to connect to web and the other opens the Toshiba Console.
Any ides chaps??
These kinds of buttons usually have drivers that are downloadable from the manufacturer.
I've been received BSOD's and freezing during start-up or even during boot mode for the past two days on my toshiba laptop. It's a miracle that I'm even able to use Safe mode at the moment -- it took me like 10 tries -- so I'm trying to type this up quickly before I encounter another problem.
Here are the dumps.
The most defitive minidump error is 0x000000D3: DRIVER_PORTION_MUST_BE_NONPAGED
Basically a driver is attempting to access a higher IRQ Level as paged when it actually should be non-paged. This results in system crashes.
The driver in question is kl1.sys which belongs to your Kaspersky antivirus. Try uninstalling it via Safe Mode and reboot. Then reinstall and see if that helps.

Hi

Hi!
I have a TOSHIBA notebook Satellite P10, Windows XP.
It is a new computer, not second hand!
The problem is that it shuts down itself when I connect it to the AC adapter.
The only way I can work is charging it while it is off and then using it while on battery.
The problem appeared after 20 days I bought it.
I sent it to the TOSHIBA service, they updated the BIOS, it worked perfectly for 5 hours (connected to the AC adapter) and then the same problem appeared.
Do you have any suggestions?
I am looking forward to your replies!
Christina
Hi Christina,
Does your notebook powwer itself down suddenly or does it do a controlled shutdown ? What happens when you try to power on your notebook when the AC adapter is connected ?
Hi all, I recently purchased a used Elitebook 8570p - great machine. To my surprise, when I went to burn a CD, I found out the installed DVD ROM is a reader, not a writer. I didn't even know those existed anymore... Model is HP DVD ROM DT80N. I've never replaced a DVD drive, but I do feel comfortable making the swap. However, I am having trouble determining what drive will fit and match the look of the notebook. Any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Hi,
the drivers can be downloaded. As far as I know 5105 is an american model, so you have to look for the driver download site from Toshiba USA.

Does this laptop come with a built-in modem? It runs Win 95 and is old, so I wasn't sure.
Look for a phone jack on the side of the laptop. You can also look in Device Manager and see if a modem is listed.

1. Where can I find the service site for this notebook?
2. One memory module can be removed, how much memory can I place there? (If I buy a 512M notebook SDRAM, will it work whith it?)
3. It has a Ni-Mh Battery pack, DC9.6V and 4500mAh, it is an old one, and can not work with it for a minute... Can I replace it? Whitch models can I use? Has it any LiIon battery pack? In Hungary, where can I buy a battery pack for it?

I've had my Toshiba Sat 1900 laptop for about 1 ½ years now and I'm starting to get a few problems with it. I find that the computer is running slow, the monitor is acting weird when I scroll up and down I'm getting a wigly/wavy look from the screen (pixel problem?) and it just doesn't work as good as it did.
I've been told laptops don't last as long as a desktop pc. Is this true?

I just don't want to experiment on a friends comp. It is a HP ze5300. Also I am assuming I can just get any old disk in the same format. I plan to call them tomorrow and confirm but... it is standard right?
It depends on how well the manufacturer has designed the laptop, and its' contents. In my Toshiba Tecra A7 laptop it is the simplest I've ever seen. One screw (or 2), remove the panel, slide the drive connection apart from the hard drive and that's it.
Just check if the hard drive has an IDE or SATA connection before you buy another hard drive, as the connections are totally different.
Try EVEREST from MG at

In the Menu tab on the left, open up Storage, then click on Windows storage.
It shows SATA (Serial-ATA) in my case

Hi there, I bought for my satellite 5105-S607 a refurbished battery. Unfortunately, this battery takes more than 6 hours to charge from 3% to 100%! Morevoer, every morning when I start the PC after it has been off during the night, I found it lost 8% of its power. Somebody suggested to update the BIOS, but my PC is already having the most updated BIOS for this model(Toshiba_1510v19_Bios). Can someone help?
Hi
Sorry but I must ask you something: what is your problem now? Long recharging time or loosing 8% of capacity over night?

Dear Sir/Madam,
5 years ago I bought in Saint-Peterburg city mentioned above notebook. I am
professional programmer, geologist, geophysicist, mathematician.
Whole this time, since I bought this notebook - I am satisfied with him. Two other notebooks, that I bought in last two years, were different from Toshiba just in case
of USB-port type, but none of Dell could beat Toshiba's performance.
Last month, in my Toshiba laptop, one SODIMM 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM chip burned out and broke down. I simply can not find this type of RAM in retail and on-line stores.
Where to buy, in order to replace it.
What should I do? What can I do? I got used to my Toshiba already, and can not go along without him.
I am missing another 512 Mb RAM.
Everything the rest - satisfy me.
Truly sincerely Yours, with kind regards and best wishes.
Nikolay
Hi
The memory modules can be purchased and ordered from the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country.
What you need are the right module specifications!
You can also purchase the modules from every common notebook/computer dealer.
Google for some online offers!!!
The Satellite 5105-S901 supports 200-Pin PC2100 (266MHz) DDR SODIMM modules. Check this page!

Hi,
Lately sth strange happened to my Toshiba 5105. It was working perfectly fine till when it just crashed ( I mean hanged up), so I turned it off to restart the system (though Win XP caused it). Unfortunately my toshiba did not turn on again;/. That is all leds in front meaning power battery and cdrom are working, whereas no sign of hdd led. It just turn on but blank black screen remain all the time. I hear silent noise from speakers as usual, but nothing more, it remain dead...I heard it could be bios, i tried to reset cmos, but no result. Later on tried do remove Hdd and take it back, but still nothing. Last but not least i unscrewed all lapotop due to removal of graphic card ( seen on other forums ). I did it, happily it worked for one day, but/and previous situation repeated. Now removal of video card doens't help at all. Could somebody possibly tell me what it is, or could be. I am out off waranty so please help me. thanks
hi,
if the red Toshiba logo at power on seq. is not shown, a critical error had occured! So I think it is better to connect a Service Partner from Toshiba!

Bye Theo
My Step son brought to me this Laptop, which I've installed a new Hard drive into. However, I cannot seem to force the system hardware to boot to the CDrom without pulling the Hard disk out first. It has a rom password that has to be insterted prior to completing the boot sequence, however, with the hardrive installed, it of course cannot find an OS.
I've flashed the bios according the toshiba website by removing the HD and forcing the boot to the cd with the flash bios image.
You can forget the F12 option, although a screen initially appears while waiting for the password, there is no little line under the images that can be manipulated to change the boot source. Once the password is entered, it immediatly grabs the HD.
Help?
Hi
I assume you are talking about user or supervisor password.
Maybe this password prevents the notebook from booting any CD?.
Why you don?t delete this password firstly and try then the CD?
Usually you could delete this in BIOS.
Please check this!
Good luck
before 3 days my computer was infected wwith a virus... an i must to format it... when i format it i see the orginal HDD recivery file is delete my partion which I have on it my works. anyway I shutdown the computer and I install it from another cd and I put the serial number and everything is ok. but some programs is not working and i want to restore my computer to the orginal OS with the drivers. HDDRecovery file is in D drive and I see it it is nearly 13GB but I can install it. there is no option in repair computer to HDDRecover... which i see it at the first time...
how I can solve it...
I want recover my computer to the orginal... i see there is some problems when I work with programs... it is freeze and give me some errors...
I want to restore it to orginal...
You can install original recovery image and set notebook to ?factory settings? using two possible options:
-to use HDD recovery installation (F8 at start-up and ?repair my computer? option)
-to use recovery DVD
If I understand you right you have installed own OS in hope to use your notebook but on this way you have ?deleted? this repair my computer option so you will not be able to start installation from HDD. Your only option is usage of recovery DVD.
Now the million dollar question: have you created recovery DVD following Toshiba advice to do this?
When I have the touchpad enabled the cursor jumps around the screen when I'm typing somthing causing me grief. It also has minimized the current browser I'm in, not always but has happened.
When I disable it and connect my Logitech wheel mouse (which I'v used for 2+ years) the problem disappears but I can't highlight/select things properly. For example, normally when I double click on a word it highlights but it doesn't do that anymore. Or when I try to select a a few words it selects the entire sentence or parts of it. I have to use the shift and arrow key. Also using the vertical scroll gives me a problem as well.
I downloaded and installed the current mouse drivers, changed the USB the mouse connects to...nothing. I'm using XP Home version (i've only used the pro version before).

Hi
The user guide doesn't spell out the differences between the S5100-201 and S5100-603 models.
I can work out they are different speeds, memory and hard disk size but what about the internal bits?
I have a broken -603 model with a power control fault. Does anyone know if the systemboard from a -201 model will fit into the -603 unit?
Thanks
Pete
Hello
I am not technician but I have found info that those units have different graphic card and both can not handle with max RAM.
Satellite 5100-201:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 32 MB
- can handle with max 512 MB RAM
Satellite 5100-603:
- nVidia GeForce4 440Go 64 MB
- can handle with max 1024 MB RAM
I am not 100% sure but if you exchange the whole Mb with all hardware components I believe that other peripheral devices should work well but I don?t know how it will work with BIOS. Maybe the DMI must be rewritten.
On this forum there are few guys with very good knowledge and I hope some of them will post here and say more about that.
who has toshiba control Utilites for satellite - distributiv? I have no CD with distributiv. When i install toshiba control Utilites, which download from TOSHIBA SUPPORT, appearence message "thci.dll was not found".
Hello
I am not 100% sure but I think that you nave US model. If yes in this case visit US Toshiba download page on http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp

After I replaced my 40GB hard drive with a 100GB hard drive (the old drive froze), I have been having a lot of problems with my keyboard.
When I'm typing, I find that the letters 'i' with tab backward so some strange point, the letter 'u' may tab forward, other letters will do other strange things.
I tried cleaning under the keys, but that didn't work. It gets very frustrating. (While typing this, the cursor jumped to a word in the first sentence, jumped 3 characters to the left, as well as jumping to the beginning of the line, really strange).
Any ideas will be greatfully appreciated.
Thanks.
Hi
Did you install the Toshiba recovery CD?
Did this issue appear before the HDD replacing?
Maybe the new HDD with the big size has a bad influence on the keyboard.
I have read some postings in the forum and it seems that sometimes a new BIOS upgrade could solve such issues.
Please be sure that you use the right BIOS and right BIOS upgrade procedure.
The other possibility is that you have done something wrong during the HDD replacement.
Can't find D-link DI-524 by Wi-Fi, what I must do?
Mobile was found, but notebook no... (Have drivers, but they don't work with Windows XP)
Hi,
I really don?t understand what you need. Do you need drivers for the wireless card? But such wireless card wasn?t installed in such machine (as I know). Is this a PCMCIA card you have? If yes then you must go to the D-link website (just google for D-link) and get the drivers there.
Otherwise you should check this site for drivers which apply to your machine:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp

Please tell me were I can find utilites or drivers for this model?
On Official site I can't find it.
Hi
Try on Toshiba US support site under http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp
Bye
My 5105-s701 has suddently started to show one or two red lines vertically (from top to bottom) of the screen. They appear as I change the angle of the display and sometimes remain after moving the display. I can get rid of them by moving the display a few times. It seems to be at any angle and they show up randomly - but very often, about every second time i move the lcd or so. When I twist the screen slightly one of them always appears.
I think the two lines are always the same coloums of pixels, and the color seems constant as well. The lines go on top of what ever window is open, is most apprent on dark colors and is only barely seen on top of white color.
Could it be a contact/soldering that is becomming loose or what is going on?
Hope someone can help me.
Best regards
Simon
Hello Simon
Please test it with external monitor. It is the best way to see it this is because of defective graphic card or LCD display.
Using XP home edition
The original error was read disk error, I used the recovery cds and the system booted up. I tried using the scan disc facility and the machine would not pass the checking free space 5% checked.
It then gave the read disk error again, now for approximately 8 hours it has been sitting at erasing all data from hard disc 1.
I realise I may have to repalce the hard drive, but do I just turn the machine off or is there some special way to exit this?
Thanks
Hi Lisa,
From what you say it sounds as if your hard drive is definitely u/s so there is no point in allowing the CHKDSK to continue any further. I think you need to replace the hard drive (or have an ASP do it for you if you prefer) and then re-install your system from the recovery CDs.
regards,

Hey,
My Toshiba Satellite U500 - 1DR series notebook (Serial no . 1A058758R) is not detected by the TOSHIBA online autodetect system. When try to get notebook detected manually on the website, I fingd that the model (Satellite U500- 1DR) is listed neither in the list of available models nor in that of discontinued models. I am unable to download appropriate softwares/updates from the website.
Hello
If autoetection doesn?t work you can find it manually but not using model name but model part number. Your U500-1DR has part number PSU9ME-xxxxx so please check Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp and check for Satellite U500 with part number or short model number PSU9ME.
Can you find it?

It could be a hardware issue.
I had similar problems w/ notebook - mousepad had to be replaced.
You could try to un-install all drivers in Device Manager then re-boot. Vista will re-install. Also make sure to go to OEM site and get updated driver - if available.
Note that you will lose mouse function completely after un-install. Have USB mouse or b/c familar with CTRL-ALT-DEL that will get you to screen so you can use arrow keys to restart system

I do have some major problems with my 5105-S501
The computer is totally screwed up, with a little help of some evil virus. Well, anyway; I thought this would be a good time to format the HD and install the OS again.
Did like the manual said, put the recovery and applications cd started up. When I choose to install I get the message " wrong computer". Even thought this was the cd I recieved with the computer!
Tried to format the hard drive manually in the comand prompt, did not work. The hard drive was in use and the computer could not force it out of use.
Put an XP pro cd in to the drive and tried to install that one. I have to choose to delete the current partion in order to format the HD, then I got the message "System unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary setup files that are required to complete the instalation.
Have tried Fdisk, did not work. Same problem as above; the hard drive is in use yada yada yada!
So guys, I really need some help. What has happend, and what can I do?

Hi Peter,
I found something that can be interesting for you:
When you run the recovery cd you get the error message "wrong machine"
The Configuration Builder/Recovery CD looks for a specific DMI string
that identifies the model of computer you are using and compares it
to information on the CD. If these two do not match then the error
"wrong machine" occurs. Your Toshiba Authorized Service Provider can
fix an incorrect, corrupt or blank bios using a special diagnostics
tool to rewrite the DMI String.
If you are certain you have the correct Configuration Builder/
Recovery CD for your computer then you should contact your nearest
Toshiba Authorized Service Provider.
Maybe it can help you.
The external video's good on the 5105.
The LCD image will not give a complete picture. The bottom third is either whited out or replicates the top third of the image. I most likely see a white or grey washout. This happened upon startup, too.
I replaced the LCD with another from a defunct 5205. This time, only the top third shows an image. The bottom 2/3 seem to be blacked out.
Also, the Toshiba Spalsh screen logo does not appear upon startup (perhaps that's because it's in the blackout area).
I haven't verified the condition of the 5205 LCD. I also neglected to connect this laptop to external video when I used the
5205 LCD.
I just want to confirm the video cable needs replacing.
I would like to know how to completely detach the palm rest from the bottom chassis. I've been reading the instruction provided by the sticky thread. I get stuck at the point where the palm rest has detached except for the "top" area around the speakers. Better yet, what cables should I detach before completely detaching the palm rest?
Once that's done, I plan to replace the video cable, but I also see what looks like a metal shield in the middle of the laptop. Any thoughts on addressing that, too?

Hi
I;m afraid; this looks a little bit like a graphic card issue...
If the display replacement didn't help then the GPU could be affected.
In such case the motherboard must be replaced. This would be the worst case because a motherboard is the most expensive notebook part.
Furthermore you will not find any disassembling manual here on the Toshiba page.
Such manuals are not for public usage and created only for the ASP technicians.
But the world wide web contains many information and I would recommend to google for some details.
Help.
I broke my control key and would like to know where I can buy the one control key.
The key pad is ok otherwise.
I also would like to know where I can download drivers for my cd drive as it spins but does not read the disk.
What family is this laptop in? Other??
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi
The Satellite 5105-S501 is an US notebook.
Therefore you should search for the drivers on the Toshiba US page:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp?nav=Download
On this page you could find drivers for the US notebooks. The Satellite 5105-S501 is an oldie and therefore you should choose the option ?Show All Models? in order to display all notebooks models.
Regarding the broken buttons:
As far as I know it?s not possible to purchase only one button. In most cases you will have to replace the full keyboard.
But for details you should definitely ask the Toshiba ASP in your country.
Cheers
Hello!
I have support problems with my notebook..
When I try to get support or register my Satellite, I can find my model number/serial number on any toshiba site.
When i try to valide serial number; i get this: "Spiacenti! Il numero di serie non esiste." Why???
I need drivers and software.. but i can't find it..
Model No: L500-158
Serial No: 89434057K
Part No: PSLJ3E-028023IT

p.s. sorry for my bad English..
Hi
Are you using the Tempro tool in order to register the notebook?
If yes, then you should update this tool to the latest version v3.33
Check this:

Same with Modem, When I tried to connect internet on Dial up modem, message appeared "Dial tone not present." Actually Dial tone was present. Device manager is showing both devices as "Working Properly". Can any one suggest solution?

Hi,
I have a Toshiba M45-S359 notebook laptop. About every 20-30 seconds, the wireless connection drops off (and immediately automatically reconnects). This is not a router issue because I tried 2 different routers (Linksys and Netgear) and also the wireless connection is perfectly stable on the other laptop I have. There are no interference issues. My phone operates at a very different (5.8 GHz) frequency. Also, the issue exists even when I have the laptop sitting very close to the router. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks in advance.

Don't know if this is the correct newsgroup for this problem.
Tried to reinstall Win XP Pro on my Toshiba 5105-S702 laptop using the Recovery CDs (circa 2001) that were supplied with it, but was blocked at the start of the recovery process, with a message to the effect that the product key was not valid. I suspect this happened because the original defective motherboard on the laptop had been replaced with a new motherboard.
Luckily I had previously purchased a Retail Version XP Pro SP1 a couple years ago, so I was able to use that instead of the Recovery CDs.
However I would still like to know how to resolve this problem (using original Recovery CDs with a new motherboard), short of purchasing the retail version of Win XP Pro, in case this problem also occurs with my newer Pro M70 laptop.
Would appreciate if anyone could advise.
Thank you
AlanCB
Hi Alan
Can you please tell me where you have bought this notebook model? At first I thought it is an US notebook model but I can not find it on US support page.
Anyway, I also think that this happen because of mainboard exchange. DMI information is wrong and not identical with info on recovery media. Check please interesting and similar problem on one Qosmio thread.

I like alot about each one but there are some slight differences...
The Toshiba has a 2.5ghz duo processor, where the asus only has the same, but the asus has 4gb ram and the toshiba only has 1.
The Toshiba has a 200gb 7200rpm hdd. The asus has a 320gb hdd, but is only 5500rpm.
Toshiba has a fingerprint thing on it which i like for good security reasons, but the asus has a video in tv tuner, which is great because I would end up buying a good one anyway.
I could just buy a 7200rpm 200gb harddrive for the asus laptop and prices would be equil

Hi!

Dear all,
I have Toshiva Satellite 5105-S901 and experiencing some proplems with running latest games, perhaps because of pretty old Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go Display driver. Laptop has been bought in 2002, and since then video-drivers were not updated.
So, where can I get them?
Nvidia does not provide drivers for Go chipsets and send customers to manufacturers. But on tosiba.com I found drivers that were placed there exactly in 2002. My laptop already has these.
But where to get the new ones?
I don't believe that there in no driver-update heas been done by Toshiba for three years for Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go Display driver.
Well, need some advice.
Sincerely your's
Alex.
P.S.:Laptop still has good perfomance(P4-2Hz,2gb RAM,64Mb Video).
Hi Alexei,
I had problems with my ATI Radeon graphics not working an some games, so I contacted the TDK technical support guys who suggested I should use the latest drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/.
Sadly I could not get the ATI drivers to load on my notebook but perhaps you will have more luck with the NVIDIA ones.
I agree with you that it is a great shame that Toshiba do not update their graphics drivers.
regards,
When I bootup my Satellite 5105-S702 laptop with the Computer Associates (CA) Anti-Virus software v8.4.0.24 turned ON, I receive the following error message near the end of the bootup process:
TouchED Error
Retrieval of THotkey" failed
Occurred Part - TouchED.exe - THotkeyFindProc( )
Failed Function - FindWindow( )
Error Code - 0x00031402, 0x00000002
However, when I turn OFF the CA Anti-Virus software and reboot the laptop, I do not get the error message.
Therefore it would appear that the CA AntiVirus software is causing this error message.
Would appreciate if anyone could advise if they have experienced this problem with this model laptop, or the Satellite 5105-S701, or the equivalent European model 5100-603, and how they rectified it.
Thank you
AlanCB
Hi
I agree with you.
In my opinion the installed (CA) Anti-Virus software is not fully compatible with the Toshiba Hotkey Utility or the Anti-Virus software doesn?t recognize it correctly and cannot handle it.
CA Anti-Virus software is not known to me but maybe you could set some setting to ignore the Toshiba Hotkey Utility.
Maybe it helps? if not I would recommend contacting the Computer Associates support team.
Toshiba Corp. will start producing a 320G-byte hard-disk drive for laptop computers before the end of this year.
It is the first 2.5-inch drive to be announced at that capacity, with production to begin in the fourth quarter, according to Toshiba. Pricing was not announced.
The drive is one of a series of five that make up Toshiba's new MKxx52SX family of hard-disk drives. The 320G-byte model will contain two platters -- the circular disks on which data is recorded. Other drives in the range will offer between 80G bytes and 250G bytes of storage space. They will connect via a 3G bps (bits per second) serial ATA (SATA) interface.

I need a free low level format utility fo a Toshiba laptop drive.
Does anyone know if the Hitachi DFT tool, Maxtor Maxblast, Seagate
SeaTools, or any other software that I can use to zero out this drive?
Hi,
Two days ago my Toshiba notebook's hard drive (MK8025GAS) started making screechy noises and before I had a chance to arrange backup media, it stopped working. I had a chance to get it running three-four more times but it didn't stay up enough to boot. I have already tried the freezing and shaking method, but it no longer works. The times it came back up was after drive sat in freezer for hours and with couple shakes.
I have attached an MP3 of the sound it's now making. Can anyone tell me if this is a motor, head or logic board problem? I'm am sort of ruling out the logic board, since the original symptoms started with disturbing noises.
I have ordered two identical drives, just to compare apple to apples. I am planning to format one of the new drives, do error check, then open the drive, close it back up and error check again to see what happens. I have read about people doing this without a clean room and getting success. If the new drive doesn't go bad with couple attempts, I will open the old drive to see if anything inside got loose. If nothing is loose, then the next step is to try to see if I can swap the disks between the two new drives and see if I can still get them to work. If a few attempts work, then I will swap the disk from the old drive to one of the new drives.
Any opinions?
ur attachment is blank,
i was thinking of the head making the noises because it might be scrapping the disk in the HD
Hi everyone !
I would like to know if I can replace DVD by caddy's SSD ?
If I do it about that, Do I loose my warranty ?
Thanks.
I don?t know what notebook model you have but in most cases such replacement (ODD ? SSD) would work in case the notebook would support the slim-select bay.
This was the case in older Tecra and Portege notebook?s
I guess Satellite notebooks don?t support such upgrade but this is just an assumption..
Warranty?
Well, if you would disasemble the notebook, the warranty will be canceled
I was thinking, that in the future when lightscribe will come to slim line DVD-RW. Is it possible to remove the build-in drive that comes with the computer, with a slim-line DVD-RW. I am thinking about connection, is it standard on all slim optical drives for notebooks, or is it IDE/SATA or some thing like this????
Hi,
It is not just about the standard connection. It depends on the interface for the DVD-RW. If it is different then it will not work, and there are not alot of specifications between different models as far as the interface goes. If toshiba decides to produce this slimline for the M70 model you can sure enough order it, otherwise chances are you will not be able to connect it like a desktop computer. Portables are slightly more difficult to modify as most of the peripherals are built specifically for each model and type. Which means trying to interchange parts between portables that are not identical in build specifications will result in failure and a headache. Best bet is to wait and see if Toshiba makes this available for the M70 pro. Good luck.
Hello everybody,
I want to replace my ODD-Drive Mat****a UJ-811. My question : is this drive master or salve or cabelselect und is it compatible to NEC AD-7540A Slim?
Thanks for answer
Hi
This is not easy to say because such setting depends on the installed firmware.
I can only suggest about this settings and I think it?s a C-SEL.
Before you buy any drives devices you should be sure that this device is supported.
In this way the Toshiba service partner could provide the right info.

Or does anyone know how to remove the drive bay from this Notebook
Message was edited by: chrielli
Hi
I think the drive replacement procedure is very similar to the replacements on other notebooks.
To remove the ODD bay module follow these steps:
1. Turn the computer upside down.
2. Remove the black bind screw.
3. Turn the computer over and open the display.
4. Push out the ODD bay module.
That?s all. It?s secured only with one screw.

More repliesHello Anyone that can help me would be appreciated. I have a linksys 350N Router which links at N speeds on other equipement I have with N cards. I purchased this notebook with above noted wifi which is supposed to do N and it only gives me G speed. I have trouble shot and changed encryption method as recommended on INTEL site yet no luck getting ThinkVantage Access software to recognize n network connection. I even went so far as to download and try actual INTEL configuration software and still no luck. HELP any ideas on how to get my notebook communicating with network at N speed? Thanks
More repliesIs it possible to buy a lightscribe dvd drive for the M60 to replace a normal drive. I have a lot of videos I made plus some I bought and I am transferring them to dvds, it would also be useful to label the discs which hold backups and blueprints we use. I would prefer to print the info direct to disc rather then print labels and stick them on the disc. I can do the job myself if I get hold of the drive and driver.
There is still a lot of life plus Toshiba warranty left in the machine and I am reluctant to upgrade it. I have two other M60s in my office and they have given very good service.
Thanks Russell.
Hi,
if you take the risk that your warranty would be voided and if you find a drive which is compatible then just do it. Sorry, but if I were you I would buy an external USB-DVD/RW with lightscribe capabilities. It?s fast enough and it would support lightscribe which is needed by you.
Thats the only option that I would choose, but I would?t screw my machine during the warranty just for some "DVD-labeling" purposes..

Hello,
the DVD/combined device of my A100-692 is damaged and I want to replace it.
I did not find yet any guide how to replace the unit.
Is there anything available?
Many thanks in advance!
Hi!
As far as I know you must remove the keyboard first before you can replace the CD/DVD drive. Remove the screw on the bottom side and then you can push out the drive if you have replaced the keyboard.
It seems to be a little bit tricky?
Maybe you should ask a notebook technician for help. They can replace the CD/DVD drive for you.

Hi,
My DVD/CD Drive is not running well anymore and I want to replace it, but can't find a way how the remove the drive. Anyone able to assist me on this? Which screws do I have to remove and where? Thanks!
Hi caribman,
As far as I know ODD replacing is not so easy. The drive is secured by one screw and to remove this screw, you have to remove the keyboard and other parts as well.
In my opinion this should be done from a notebook technician because it?s a tricky procedure. This is not so easy as on desktop computers so I would contact professional help
Hello everybody. Sorry, I may write with some mistakes.
I've notebook satellite s5200-701, & some days ago, cd-rom cd-rom was break. Windows "views" device, but cd-rom can't read CD or DVD. I bue new device (TEAC DW-224E) but i can't eject old cd-rom. Can you explaine me how I can change it.
Andrew.
Hello Andrew
The drive replacement on Satellite 5200 is very complicated and almost the whole unit must be disassembled. Problem is that CD/DVD drive is fixed on the system board.
If you are not familiar with disassembling procedure please don?t do it alone. Believe me it is very complicated.
Hello
Many users seem to have problems with the Matsu****a drives in this modell. I wanted to replace my dysfunctional Matsu****a uj 810 dvd drive and the closest I found in stores is a uj 830 with the cover fitting perfectly. It is however not recognized by the system and I susptect I need to change some settings like the master slave settings which I cant, as there seems to be no fully accesably BIOS installed.
Has anyone ever replaced this drive by a more current one?
Thanks
Andrew
Hi
As far as I know all CD or DVD ROM`s in Toshiba Notebooks are preset to be slave. HDD is preset to be master.
Please remember that all CD or DVD devices can not work properly with any Toshiba Notebook and before you want to change any hardware component pick up some information from Service Partner.

Could anybody give me instruction how to replace DVD drive?
I screwed some screws off at the bottom and two under keyboard and I still can't pull it out.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark.
I found it!
This is only one screw! It is under the memory flap.
I want to replace the CD/DVD drive. How can I make this?
Any instruction or pictures how to remove the drive?
hi,
this is not sooo easy.
you have to remove the keyboard first.
1. remove battery
2. you will see three screws in a row (2x black 1x silver)
3. now you can remove the small batten on the top of the keyboard.
4. remove the two screws of the keyboard
5. now you can see on screw in the middle..remove them and you can unplug the DVD drive
you do this at your own risk...it is possible that you will lost your warranty

I have a an Acer Aspire 5102WLMi notebook that the screen just went completely white on and then upon restarting it nothing was displayed, but the computer at least seems to turn on. I've tried plugging it into an LCD monitor but there still isn't anything displayed. I should note the laptop isn't mine. This is how I received it and what I was told. Is it possible for the on-board video to go bad? Or any ideas of things I could try to pin-point the problem?
Thanks
If you have tried an external monitor (which you said you have) and nothing displayed on boot whilst plugged into the external monitor, I would say that the built-in video is bad. I would advise your friend/client/relative to purchase a new laptop or see if you can find a cheap, used mobo on Ebay to replace it because the video cannot easily be replaced (soldered onto motherboard).
My cd is defected, i have a new one but i have'nt maintenance manual.
Could you given to me the process to replace this reader?
Thanks per avdvance
Hi
The CD/DVD replacement is not really difficult.
The ODD is secured with one screw which is hidden under the keyboard.
To remove the keyboard you have to remove the thin plastic cover which is placed above the F1-F12 button row. Then you will see the screws securing the keyboard.
Remove the screws to lift up the keyboard.
Now at the left you will find a screw which secures the ODD.
Remove this screw and now you should be able to move out the drive.
But be careful ;)
I have a Satellite A100-033 PSAANE, running Windows Vista Home Basic. The hard drive is 60G. I save virtually all my data onto an external hard drive, but even so the hard drive will eventually not have enough space for the growing number of programs which I have installed, the various temporary files, etc. For example, I would like to install VirtualBox and run XP ( Ido have a copy), plus Linux, and maybe some other operating systems, within it, but that is likely to eat up more hard disc space than I have available.
Does anyone know if it is possible to take out my existing hard drive and replace it with another one of a higher capacity? Is this possible?
I would have to reinstall Vista on the new drive, from the rescue disc which came with the PC. I don't mind doing this, but will Windows Vista be "recognised" when I try to install it on the new hard drive?
Sorry if these questions sound naive, but I don't know how to put a new hard drive into a laptop, or even if this is possible. I bought the Toshiba in February 2007, which was just after Vista had been released. I wasn't given the option of XP: Vista was the only operating system Toshiba provided at that point. I was assured that a 60G hard drive would be fine for Vista, but I do have to say that I feel I was wrongly advised, and that Toshiba should never have released a 60G machine for use with Vista. Hence my wish to have a hard drive with a bigger capacity.
Yes you can install a higher capacity HDD. I believe the A100 can take any size of SATA 2.5" HDD, so you should be able to install a 250GB or 320GB successfully.
As for Windows, you can reinstall it using the Toshiba Recovery Disc that came with the laptop.
Instructions:
Remove the screw(s) from the HDD cover on the base of the laptop to access the HDD.
Slide out the HDD
Transfer the HDD cradle/mounts to the new HDD
Slide in the new HDD and screw on the HDD cover.
Turn on the laptop and press F12 to access the boot menu.
Insert your Recovery Disc and choose the CD icon to boot from it.
Follow the prompts to install Windows.
Connect your original HDD to the A100 using a USB adapter to restore your files/documents.
ps. Remember to backup your important files regularly. HDD's can fail at any time since they have delicate moving parts, even when new.
Hello,
A few days ago, I decided to replace my CD/DVD burning drive (burns DVD at 1x) with a quicker and more modern one.
The problem is that while turning on my notebook, it stops without any error message, as if it couldn't recognize the hard disk, therefore it doesn't make the boot of Windows Professional (master-slave configuration problem?).
I tried with two different burning drives and I've also upgraded the notebook BIOS to 1.40 version (date 04/17/2003) but there was no result.
Help me thanks

You guessed right,
it's a master/slave/CS issue.
Check out your old drive (the firmware ID something like 170A) and try to locate the meaning of them (current M/S/CS setting) of it through the Internet on DVD drive specific forums.
Then figure out WHAT kind of drive you need to buy to make it work on your computer (or locate the appropriate firmware to do that... you will need for this a different Laptop that DOES RECOGNIZE the DVD drive in the state it is right now).
Slimline notebook DVD-drives usually don't come with a jumper to make this setting (M/S/CS) on your own but are adjusted through the internal firmware for this. There are other means on how to get it to work (forcing a shortcut on the back of the plug) but I would not go for it if I were you.

I stil use very old Toshiba A350D. Notebook works fine with Office, internet browsing and other light task.
But last days i notice a problem with wifi connection. Well, the card constantly switches off automatically. I use Intel Wifi ProSET tool and Windows 7 system tools.
Windows 7 indicator shown no avilable connections and ProSET indicator shown wifi disabled and ask for turn on wifi with hardware switcher, when hardware switcher (mechanical slider with LED on front) is in the 'on' position and LED flashes.
When this happens, the wifi card is still detected in the Windows device manager. I reinstalled all drivers, but this didn't fix the problem.
The card can be switched on and off several times per minute, but most often when the card is turned off it is hard to activate it again.
Fn + F8 works well, if WiFi Link works properly himself.
Is there still someone who remembers this model and met with such behavior?
I have tried all methods suggested on Dell faq,s to boot xp from cd, pressing F2 only gives me the option of booting windows normally, can anyone tell me how to do a clean install , wipe the hard drive, repartition and reload XP Home.I have also tried pressing F12 to boot from cd. Please help .Thanks Andy
Hello,
This is Richard from Dell's Online Community Outreach group. The way to boot to the install cd is by pressing F12. You must do this as soon as the Dell logo screen appears which is right after pressing the power button. Pressing F12 will prompt the one time boot menu. Look for CD/DVD/CR-RW, select it by using the up/down arrows. When it is highlighted press the enter key.
When the system tries to boot off the cd-rom drive, there will be a message on screen that says, "Press any key to boot from cd". This is a confirmation that you want to boot from cd-rom instead of the hard drive, just press the space bar to acknowledge the request. Problem is that if you do not press a key within like 3 seconds the system will automatically boot from the hard drive so you must be quick to press the space bar.
This should then take you to the installation process.
Good luck,
Richard B

Got a user who has a Acer 5100-3583 notebook, the keyboard and touchpad are unresponsive after multiple reboots and standard trouble shooting yield no results.? The unit is only 14 months old and out of warranty.
Any clues?
It will read from DVD-ROM drive as it reads a DVD movie when inserted.
No USB devices such as keyboard and mouse work either.
Thanks
Greg
- in windows, press Fn+F7 (or the combination you have to activate/deactivate touchpad
- In the bios (press F2 when it appears the ACER screen when booting), be sure that the Tpad is enabled.
Purchase a usb mouse and keyboard and by pass the problem.
Restore to an earlier date to make sure the configuration wasn't dumped somewhere along the line.
Reformat the system.
Check with Acer Site under troubleshooting to see if there are any other solutions.
Last resort and if your capable open casing to check for loose connections. ( It does appear Acer has problems with touchpads frequently)
Luck to you and this is about all the thoughts I came up with right now. Let us know...Jazz
My pc just got my user name changed for "Toshiba" and I cant acess. I can not even use HD recovery because it ask for the password of "Toshiba"
More repliesHello!
Last month, after a BSOD displayed (i don't have the error message code, unfortunately) my laptop decided to not work again.
At startup he reached the boot menu and then displays a black screen... no messages, no automatic reboot... nothing. Just a weird sound coming from the the hard-drive (like a scratched cd).
I've tried to Format the drive, but with no success. After choosing the boot source, he tries to read the cd and the black screen appears again, with no messages. i've checked if the cd bay is working properly and it is. ( i think)
So i've replaced the internal hard drive in my satellite 2450. A new toshiba ide 2,5 hard drive with 30gb. But when i install the new one, the system doesn't recognize it.
The Bios setup panel says that "no hard drive" is available, and i can't change that option. (it's locked)
With the Windows Xp cd in the drive, the setup runs all properly until the " select drive " format menu, witch says that no hard-drive is recognized (with a new hard- drive in).
I really don't know what else can i do!!!!!
Is it something's missing in this process?
Thank you for the patience
Hi
The notebook did not recognize a new HDD. That?s a reason why the Win XP cannot follow the further installation steps?
I cannot say exactly why the HDD is not recognized but the IDE 30GB should be ok.
I remember that a friend of mine has had similar problem with new HDD.
Some HDDs have an jumper ( 3.5? HDD and IDE 2.5? HDD too)?
Maybe you should check if an jumper has been set to right position (slave???).
Check it? otherwise I recommend testing with another new HDD?
In worst case the HDD controller could be faulty but this would mean that an motherboard should be replaced?
