Equium A100-338 - memory upgrade question.

Question: Equium A100-338 - memory upgrade question.

first post here. I just got myself an A100-338 and it comes with 2 x 512mb sticks of pc2-4300 ddr2 memory and I want to add a further 1gb. Do I need to buy 2 x 512mb sticks or can I buy 1 x 1gb stick? Does it make any difference if you mix different sizes of memory?

Preferred Solution: Equium A100-338 - memory upgrade question.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Equium A100-338 - memory upgrade question.

Hi Jonathan

What do you want to do?
Do you want to upgrade the memory to 2GB?

How do you want to upgrade the memory to 2GB using 512MB modules? ;) 4 x 512MB???
Sorry but something like that is not possible.

The notebook supports only 2 memory slots
Therefore you have to use 2 x 1024MB memory module. Are you agree?

Hello there.

The time has come to upgrade my laptop, but I'm not sure how to get the full 4 GB RAM in to it.

Toshibas page for this computer says I can have 4 GB but also that its two memory slots will only cope with maximum 1024 MB cards. Is the extra only achievable through vista ready boost or something??

It currently has two '512mb pc5300 667mhz' cards in it.

Please help me....... I am looking to order these items very soon and I do not want to buy something that wont work.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Equium A100-02L: Question about memory upgrade to 4GB

Is there nobody who can shed any light on this problem for me ?

Toshiba page.

standard : 1,024 (512+512) MB
maximum expandability : 4,096 MB
technology : DDR2 RAM (667 MHz)
expansion module sizes : 256, 512, 1,024 MB

The information is there. How is it interpreted ?

Hi there,

I have an Equium A100-027 notebook with 2 x 512 MB RAM installed. I'd like to add extra memory.

I have used Crucial's ( website to scan my system and recommend memory modules. According to Crucial the A100-027 will support 2 x 2 GB modules giving 4 GB in total.

However a quick search using Google suggest I can only install 2 x 1 GB (2 GB in total) modules.

Can anyone clarify please.

Thanks in advance,

I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive on my A100-549 as 40GB isn't enough.

Anybody know what sort of drive I need to buy?

Have looked on Ebuyer and there are some Toshiba 2.5" hard drives, but want to make sure that I buy one that will be compatiable with my laptop.

Any ideas?

Answer:Equium A100-549: Question about HDD upgrade

you have to use a HDD with Enhanced IDE (ATA-6) interface.
The BIOS should detect all capacities.
The height of the drive should be not more than 9.5mm.

I would like to upgrade the RAM on my A100-306 to make use of the full capability of win 7 64bit. I have been looking around, I know I need PC-4200 (533MHz) 200 Pin SODIMM modules but I am not clear on whether they need to be paired. Ideally, I would like to buy a single 2GB module now, and then get a second one in the future. My questions are:

1) Is it ok to have a single 2GB module?
2) Can I leave in one of the current 512GB modules to give me 2.5GB?
3) To what extend does the second module need to match the first if is purchased and added at a later time?

I look forward to any advice.

Answer:Equium A100-306 memory upgrade to from 2x512 to 4GB for Windows 7 64bit

The A100-306 supports the Mobile Intel? 945GM Express Chipset.
This chipset supports max 4GB RAM.
This means that you can use 2x 2GB modules.

Yes, you can use 512Mb and 2GB RAM? this should be possible?

Usually it?s recommended to use the modules with the same specifications?
I mean the modules should use the same speed (Mhz)? if one of the module will be slower then the faster module would be clocked down and both modules would run at the lower speed?

I'm about to open up my A100 to drop in a new Core 2 Duo but what i also want to know is does this model have the capacity to take a graphics card.
Also does toshiba offer this model with a better graphics GPU than the GMA950?

I didn't purchase this for gaming but i might upgrade it if possilbe.

Please dont post on here to tell me that this model is not for gaming as i am very aware of this fact already.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Answer:Equium A100-147: Question about graphics upgrade

I presume you didn?t search in this forum for some similar thread about graphic and CPU replacement. Am I right?

I would recommend doing this because then you will find useful information about the graphic card upgrade and finally a statement that GPU upgrade is not possible.

Furthermore you will find many threads and advices that it?s inadvisable to disassemble the notebook and to upgrade the CPU?

I purchased a Equium A100-306 in November prior to deploying on operations as I am in the forces and was unable to upgrade before this.

I have just returned and have found out I can no longer get my Vista upgrade as I have missed the deadline. I have E-mailed ModusLink with no response. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or could help me resolve this problem.

I feel I should not miss out on the free upgrade due to circumstances out of my control. Looking through the documentation I received with my laptop there was no deadline stated it is only on the internet the deadline is made clear but I was unable to check this out.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Equium A100-306 Question about ModusLink Vista Upgrade

Hi Greg

What to say. The whole upgrade program is controlled by ModusLink Company and every misunderstanding you must try to clarify with them. I think end of the March was ?deadline? for Vista upgrade program.

Sorry but you are alone and try to talk with them about the whole situation.

I have a Equium A100-027 with 1GB RAM (2x 512MB modules)

Answer:Question about RAM and Graphics card upgrade on Equium A100-027

Hi there,

regarding your upgrade question:

RAM -> you need 200-pin DDR2 RAM:

Graphics card -> upgrade is not possible, since the graphics card is soldered on the mainboard of your notebook which means it?s "hardwired"

Hi, I want to upgrade my memory. I wanted to add a 1gb memory on the extra slot but I wanted to be sure what I'm looking for, I don't know much about this and I want to make sure I buy one that is compatible with everything. If anyone knows anything about this please answer.

Answer:Equium A60-692: memory upgrade question

Well, you are first time here in the forum ;) Welcome!

Now to your question. As far as I know the Equium A60-692 was delivered with a 256 MB internal memory. This module cannot be removed.
Additional one memory slot is available and you can upgrade the memory to max 1280MB (256MB + 1024MB) In this case you can use a 1024MB module.

You have to use PC2100 DDR-RAM memory modules.
Furthermore I have found one which you can use without any problems. The part number is: PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G)

Hope it helps

I've had the misfortune to get 2 KVR667D2S5/1G sodimms for my Toshiba Satellite A100-551 laptop which don't work by themselves either as a single sodimm or as a pair, it doesn't matter which slot they go into - they don't work.

However when the orignal 512Mb sodimm is put back into one of the slots - it doesn't matter which - either of the kvr etc sodimms work giving a total of 1.5Gb of ram.
Please help me to solve this problem.

Also is it poss. to upgrade cpu ie is cpu socketed. I've already upgraded many a laptop cpu when thay had socketed cpus, so I'm aware of the problems involved
Thanking you all for your kind help in this matter.

It?s clear -> modules seems to be not compatible ;)

> However when the original 512Mb sodimm is put back into one of the slots - it doesn't matter which - either of the kvr etc sodimms work giving a total of 1.5Gb of ram.

Cannot believe that! As far as I know this notebook was delivered only with one 512MB DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) 200-PIN SODIMM module.
Of course you can upgrade the memory up to 2GB using two 1024MB modules.

The compatible memory can you find here:

> Also is it poss. to upgrade cpu ie is cpu socketed. I've already upgraded many a laptop cpu when they had socketed cpus, so I'm aware of the problems involved
Well, what to say, the CPU is socked? you can find out it easily using an hardware diagnostic program like ?Everest?. It would provide many useful information about your notebooks hardware.

But to be honest, I?m very skeptical about CPU upgrade on the notebooks.
If you have already changed several CPUs on the notebooks then you should know that this is not very easy and more tricky like the CPU upgrade on the desktop PCs.

I have the Equium L350-10L. Is it possible to upgrade the memory on my laptop. At the moment it has 2GB (2x1GB).

Answer:Equium L350-10L - Memory upgrade question

Of course you can upgrade the RAM.
Did you take a look into the user manual which was stored on the notebook?
I think you should do this? there you can did many details, pictures and further information regarding the RAM upgrade.

Check chapter 8 ? optional devices ? memory expansion.

Furthermore you should know that if you would upgrade the RAM to 4GB then your Windows 32bit system will see ONLY 3.2GB.
So if you want to use full 4GB you will need to change the OS to 64bit.

In my opinion 3GB RAM are more as enough?

Also I currently have 512 MB ram fitted. Can I increase this?

Answer:Equium M50-244: Question about Wlan card and memory upgrade

Hi cora,

Of course you can upgrade the memory to a higher value.
This notebook should support 2 memory slots and it should be possible to increases the memory to max 2048MB. In this case you can use 2 x 1024MB module.

I have also found a information that this notebook accept this modules:
DDR2-400/533 256MB (PA3389U-1M25)
DDR2-400/533 512MB (PA3412U-1M51)
DDR2-400/533 1GB (PA3411U-1M1G)

I don?t know if you known the Toshiba options & accessories site but if not so visit this: SHOP

I have a Tosh Equium A100-549 (PSAA4E). It's getting a bit old now but still a good machine, I've read various reports on what the max memory is for this laptop.

I bought 2 x 2GB 200 pin SODIMM's, PC2-5300 (667) but when I install them the laptop does not start up. I get the power and keyboard LED's and the fan but not screen output.

If I mix one of the old 512mb modules with a new 2GB (in any order on the banks) then the laptop does work, although I only get 1.87GB showing in XP Home Ed.

I have updated to the latest BIOS but still the same.

Is it more a case of 2GB not supported or is it the speed? Do I need 2x 2GB PC2-4200?

Answer:Equium A100-549 4GB of memory?

Hi mate,

the machine does not support def. more than 2GB RAM. You should use modules with 533Mhz and not with 667.

Hello folk

This is my first post. I've searched through but can't find my question answered previously.
I recently purchased a s/h Equium 100-027.

The display failed on me soon after. With the help of your useful forum I discovered that one of my memory slots was defective and I could only operate with one good memory slot.

As I now only have 512mb to run my Windows 7 I was wondering if I could upgrade the one remaining slot to 2gb which is the maximum the laptop will tolerate or can I only upgrade to 1gb for the one remaining good slot.

I don't want to replace the mobo if I don't have to.

Answer:Equium A100-027 - memory distrubution

I?ve Googled a bit and found info that your old Equium can be upgraded up to 4 GB.
For upgrade you must use compatible RAM modules:
512MB (PA3412U-2M51)
1GB (PA3411U-2M1G)
2GB (PA3513U-1M2G)

It is your decision what to do now. ;)

I currently have an Equium A100 (PSAAQE), and was wondering what the maximum memory is for a 32-bit XP OS.

I've currently got two 512mb sticks (PC2-5300) and was wanted to check that if I buy a further 2gb (PC2-5300) stick, to go anlongside one of my current sticks that would work....

I'm thinking this:

Would someone please comment on whether this is ok? ...and confirm that won't exceed the OS or hardware max.

Answer:Equium A100 - Maximum Memory

The maximum amount of your notebook would be 4GB. 32Bit OS can only use 3GB.

The recommended memory specifications are DDR2 SO-DIMM 533mhz.

677 maybe work, but to be sure take the above mentioned.

The problem is that the T2250 is 32bit instead the T7700 is a 64bit.
The Socket is compatible but i don't now if the motherboard is compatible too.

Have someone of you tryed this upgrade?

The question is if my motherboard supports the new CPU 64bit.
Thanks to all for the answers, if there will be.

Answer:Upgrade on Equium A100-060

What chipset is used in this notebook?
You have to check if the chipset would be able to handle the new CPU.
If the socket is compatible and if chipset is able to handle the new CPU then you would have good chances to upgrade the CPU.

Answer:Is it possible to upgrade the CPU on Equium A100-27?

Hi there,

so you are using "PC Wizard" and you trust it? "PC Wizard" is in my opinion not a program which will find out which CPU fits in your system.

1.) Which CPU do you have? Intel CoreDuo, CoreSolo, PentiumM (every of these CPU?s has the Yonah-Core).
Did PC-Wizard tell you this fact? If not try "WCPUID" or "CPU-Z", to find out which CPU is in your system. (These programs are btw. professional tools for Hardware developers and overclockers)

2.) Supported voltage 3.3 Volt???? The maximum CPU voltage for such CPU which is in your system is about (legal and verified) 1.6 -1.7 Volts in normal state. So a second evidence that your nice "PC-Wizard" is lying to you.

3.) The maximum speed really depends on the architecture in your machine. The highest CoreDuo version has 2.33 Ghz, but the CoreSole just 1.66 Ghz. If you really want to do it, then be REALLY SURE which CPU you have.

4.) Think about the cooling system. Are you sure that the cooling system for the actual CPU in your system fits on CPU with higher speeds?? And where to get such information? This information just belongs to hardware developers of toshiba and not to normal freaks like us. :)

5.) Since every new Intel CPU needs a flash of the CPU-register (called DMI-write) you will have the next problem, because such tools are just given to toshiba technicians and are not available for public!! So if you REALLY can install the CPU (did you forget the Co... Read more

I?m afraid the 2GB RAM ist the most possible memory value which is supported by Equium A100-027. I this the chipset limitation.

The HDD upgrade should be possible since the SATA controller isn?t limited to an certain size.
Therefore I think that 750GB should be possible?

Hi, I have an Equium A100-147 with the standard 1gb RAM (512mb + 512mb of pc-4200) running XP Professional.

I would like to upgrade, and wondered whether it would be ok to replace one of the 512mb sticks with a single 2gb pc-5300 stick. Ram would then be 2gb pc-5300 plus 512mb pc-4200 = 2.5gb in total.

Or would it be better to buy 2 x 1GB sticks of pc-5300 and sell or throw the existing memory?

Will I see any appreciable increase in speed over the existing Ram configuration?

Any advice appreciated.

It would be better to run 2x 1GB Modules. When you use the same modules, they run in Dual Channel Mode, which may boost performance in memory intensive applications.

Hi I purchaed an Equium A100-233 laptop.
In the spec it states that the intergrated display memory can be up to 128MB.
The problem is the driver states 64MB max.
As the memory is shared with the system memory I assumed that I must need a larger DIMM, so I've put a 1GB DIMM in it now, but it still says 64MB max.
So is there some setting I need to change to make it 128MB?

Answer:Display memory size on Equium A100-233

Hi there, I'm having difficulty finding your laptop model on the Toshiba homepage, are you sure about the model number I know there's a Satellite A100 233. Do you have a link to a page with regards to the specs??
Unfortunately it appears you have been provided inaccurate information the memory allocated to the integrated display is controlled by the driver/chipset. If the maximum it can offer is 64Mb then adding more RAM will not change this limitation.
Unless you are a hard-core gamer you really don't need anymore than 64Mb for graphics.

My wife and I are both pensioners on a limited budget and cannot afford to change the above machine and we would like to change to Vista from XP. Is it better to upgrade or reformat and install the full programs? Also will I need to get updates for other programs that are there?

Thank you in advance

Answer:Re: Vista upgrade on Equium A100-147

Do you really need to change to Vista? It is reckoned to be more resource-intensive than XP (e.g. recommendation is for a minimum 2GB of RAM) and there may be device and printer driver problems if your machine was not really designed for Vista (early 'Vista Ready' PCs are not necessarily compatible, but I don't know the status of A100-147).

Although XP will soon be dropped from sale, its support should continue for quite a while, e.g. a new service pack is due to come out in a few months.

HI Folks :-)

Can i change the HDD drive in my Equium a100 027 for one with a 7200rpm speed ?

If not whats the biggest size of HDD i can put into it ?

Also is it worth getting a big one to do a dual boot with Vista and XP or have one wiht Vista and the other Drive with XP

Can anyone also point me in the direction of where to purchase the correct type of drive with the correct connection...its SATA i believe

Thanks on advance for your help

Answer:Need information about HDD upgrade on Equium A100-027

In my opinion you can use the HDD with the 7200rpm speed. I really don?t see any reasons why this should be not possible!

It?s important that you buy an HDD with the supported interface and the HDD size.

You are right; the Equium A100 supports SATA HDD interface.
You have to use SATA HDDs and not IDE!!!

According to some internet sites the notebook was delivered with the 80GB HDD.
I presume you should be able to upgrade the HDD up to 120GB but this is only a suggestion because Toshiba does not provide any official informations about the max HDD size.

Answer:Re: Equium A100-027: Upgrade questions

In your case I would take some kingston RAM and upgrade to 2GB because everything above 2GB does not help you really and you won?t recognize it even if you work on really big pictures in CoredDraw.
Regarding the HDD?s: A HDD with 7200RPM would speed up your machine, so just check the Toshiba drives out, they?re really fast. You can also check the H itachi drives because they?re reliable and fast, too. (Like the Tosh drives)

If you got still some questions: just ask ;)

The maximum RAM capacity is depending on your chipset that you have. The Toshiba website shows a maximum capacity of 4GB RAM but don?t forget you need a 64bit OS to use the full capacity. Otherwise you are only able to use ~3GB.

You can buy every modules that you want but I made good experience with Kingston modules. The Kingston memory search shows compatible modules for your notebook:

128Megs for Graphics should be enough. I tried and had no problems. The problem will be the RAM. You should upgrade to 2 gb. Since I have two GB it runs very well. How do I go about using the card reader? It says it's compatible with the memory stick, but it seems too small to fit into the card reader. Do I need an adapter?
Help please!!!

Thank you.

Answer:Using a memory stick (pro duo) in the card reader of Equium A100-027

Hi there,

to use the pro duo in a normal memory stick slot, you have to purchase such adapter (e.g. in a electronic market or shop):

If you just put the mem stick duo in the existing slot, you will get heavy problems when you recognize that you are not able anymore to
remove it or something else.
So, it was good to ask this here, just get such adapter and you can use the stick without problems.

Yes. It is possible to upgrade your Equium up to 2GB but you must use compatible memory modules.
Compatible 1GB module for your old Equium has part number PA3411U-1M1G.

I'm considering buying an A100-147. Does anyone know if the hard disk is SATA or IDE.

I'm also looking at the Satellite A100-207. It's ?70 more expensive, but does have a larger (120Gb) SATA disk and a slightly faster processor (1.73 vs 1.6). Firstly, is there really any difference between the Equium and Satellite ranges other than the badge, e.g. build quality? Secondly, am I likely to notice any practical difference between the two models? If not, I'll save the money!

Thanks in advance

Hello all!

I am new to the forum but have been lurking for a while and thought it about time I said 'Hello'.

That and the fact I have a question about my Equium A100-027 laptop.
The hard drive on my notebook appears to be split into three partitions = Vista (C:) / Data (E:) / WinRE (D:) with the WinRE (D:) being quite small but the other quite large.

My C drive is down to 3GB free with around 35GB free on the Data (E:) is it possible to merge these two to give me one large drive? And if so how?
Please excuse my ignorance but I seem unable to 'get my head around' this split hard drive thing and would just like the one large hard drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and once again, hello all.

Hey guys and gals
I'll get to the point.

I am looking to upgrade the RAM in a Toshiba Equium A100 laptop. It was supplied with 1GB (2x512 modules) Providing i find the correct DDR 2 memory modules.
Does anyone know if there is a limit as to how much i can increase the RAM?

I would also like to replace the HDD module as the 80GB just doesn't cut it, any advice or direction on that would be greatly received.

Any information on a processor upgrade would also be appreciated.

I know it's asking a lot but you guys know better than me.

Answer:Equium A100: Need some details about upgrade possibilities

At first I must say, it will be interesting to know which Equium A100 you have exactly (A100-xxx).
RAM upgrade is very easy and you can do it at first. According notebook specifications your notebook can handle with 4 GB max and compatible RAM modules is DDR2-533 1GB (PA3411U-2M1G). To check the list of all compatible modules visit Toshiba support page under

About HDD upgrade there is no public document but I am pretty sure you can upgrade HDD up to 250 GB without any problems.

CPU upgrade is not supported and you should think about it. Believe me with maximum RAM you do not need CPU upgrade. Upgrade RAM to maximum and optimize operating system.

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 but since then have no sound.
I have checked that all devices are enabled and not muted.
I have visited the Realtek and Toshiba sites and have downloaded the latest software recommended by Toshiba, but still no sound.

I have seen other postings relating to a similar issue - can you advise how I can sort this, please?

Answer:Equium A100 upgrade to Windows 7, but now no sound

Do you hear sound via the Headphone socket?

Try muting then unmuting the main volume. Sometimes it can get stuck in Mute mode.

I recently received an Equium A100-027 for my birthday. Overall I'm extremely pleased with it, however the only problem I have is with the graphics card. I am a gamer, and the graphics card just can't handle most modern games.

I am looking into how to upgrade it, how much it will cost etc. However I don't wanna buy a graphics card just to realise that the inside is locked down. Since it's only a week old I also don't want to take a hammer to it just yet ;-)

Can anyone tell me how hard it is to upgrade the graphics card? Is it locked down, or easily accessible?

Answer:Equium A100-027: Is it possible to upgrade the graphic card?

Hi E?monn

Unfortunately, the graphic card upgrade is not possible. I don?t know if you are familiar with the notebook technology but you should know that the graphic cards installed on the notebook motherboards are not same like the GPU?s for desktop PC?s.

The card a fixed and there is no way for an upgrade!!!
You can upgrade the memory modules or the HDD on the notebooks but not the graphic card!!!

I?m also an gamer and I?m a notebook owner but I don?t use this unit for gaming but for usual usage like internet, programming, mps, etc?
I have a second gaming machine and it?s a desktop PC. It?s support a water cooling module and a really great graphic card? but I will change it to the newest one ? NVIDIA which supports the directX10.
This is a future and all newest games will need this DrectX10!!!

I have a brand new Equium A100-337 which came with Vista as standard.

No games work properly (yes I've tried the emulator). The sound is dreadful and DVD's are virtually inaudible. The firewall switches itself off or crashes constantly. I keep on getting the message that Toshiba flash cards arent working - I don't even know what they are!

Is all this normal?
Would the XP installation solve my problems?

Answer:Equium A100-337: bad Vista performance - should I upgrade to XP?

How about RAM upgrade. According to specification this notebook model is delivered with 512 MB of RAM. Very interesting is that graphic card is shared one and use RAM for graphic operations. I can imagine that performance is not the best one.

This notebook model can handle with 4GB of RAM and I recommend you to upgrade RAM with additional 1GB module.

I am pretty sure the performance will be much better. 512 MB is for me definitely not enough. The same is with WXP when unit has 256MB RAM only.

Does Equium A100 - 147 HDD have the same anti shock mechanism of the A120 series?

Answer:Question about HDD anti shock on Equium A100-147

Sorry but the Equium A120 is not known to me. Where did you found the information about this notebook and the HDD anti shock mechanism?

I have found some info about the new feature called Toshiba EasyGuard.
Hard disk drive (HDD) protection a feature of Toshiba EasyGuard is designed to prevent the damage to the hard disk drive as well as to data disks incurred as a result of shock, fall or vibration.
This feature can be found in the ?device manager? under ?system devices? section as Toshiba HDD protection ? shock sensor driver.
But unfortunately, I don?t found anything similar on the Equium A100

I have had my Toshiba Equium A100-338 laptop for over 2 years now and the other day I upgraded the RAM to 4GB from 1GB, I have noticed that the battery level is poor and I can only get at max 30-40 mins out of the battery. It has usually has 1hr 30mins to 2hrs of life on a fully battery until now

I thought that adding more RAM would make the battery last longer, though I don't know that it?s the RAM that?s done it

Any help appreciated, thank you!

Answer:After RAM upgrade Equium A100-338 runs on battery 30 mins only

In my opinion RAM upgrade cannot be responsible for this lower battery capacity. I have upgraded/ downgraded memory on my notebooks and I didn?t notice something like this.

Does it mean when you use 1 GB RAM again you can use battery so long as before?

My hard drive is only 60gb with 2gb of ram. Does any body know if it is possible to upgrade the hard drive to, say 120gb or more on this model .

Answer:Question about hard drive replacement on Equium A100-147

I don?t see any reasons why the 120GB HDD should not function.
The A100 series is one of the newest notebook series and the BIOS & HDD controller should support such size.

But very important is that you use the HDD with the compatible and supported interface.
As far as I know the notebook supports the SATA HDD.

I have a Equium A100-027,

Do I go for the 32 or 64 bit version - unsure if I need one over the other based on the processor?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Equium A100-027 - Question about Win 7 fresh installation: 32bit or 64bit

Windows 7 32bit supports max 3.2GB RAM
In case you want to upgrade the RAM up to 4GB RAM, I would recommend choosing the Windows 7 64bit in order to use the full 4GB of RAM

The CPU is an Intel Pentium T2060 which supports 32bit but the Physical Address Extensions is 32-bit feature that enables x86 processors to access more than 4 GB of physical memory

I recieved an Equium L20 as a gift last year. Pretty much a month after getting it going, it has been very, very sluggish. It turns out it was sold to me with only 256Meg RAM - not even enough for XP to perform!!

I'm based out in the states now, and have been sent THREE different upgrades by a 'reputable on line memorystore' none of which have fit correctly..

The L20 forum claims that I need:

PC 4200 DDR2 - 533 SO DIMM

Is that correct?! I'm pretty sure the existing memory reads PC2700..

The problem seems to be that although the memory card lines up OK, the lateral grooves on each side that hold it in place do not line up with the arms in the memory slot.

Can anyone help? Please!!

Answer:Memory upgrade on Equium L20

According the specification you can upgrade RAM with max 2GB. One slot is empty and there you can put additional RAM module. Maybe the better solution is to put module with more capacity in slot A and 256 MB RAM into slot B. Compatible modules are:
DDR2-400/533 256MB (PA3389U-1M25)
DDR2-400/533 512MB (PA3412U-1M51)

I currently have Toshiba Equium A60-155 with standard 192mb of RAM and was thinking of upgrading or purchasing a new laptop and I am seeking advice.

I use my computer for music production mainly as well as simple tasks such as browsing internet and the odd game (mainly number crunching, data games with less emphasis on graphics etc)

Basically all I want to know is wether purchasing 1GB of RAM would be worthwhile upgrade as performance at the moment is sluggish to say the least. Would this make a great deal of improvement to my laptop or would I be better of saving for a few months and purchasing a new laptop all together?

Thanks guys :)

Answer:Equium A60-155 - memory upgrade

Hi Claire,

Increasing the RAM in your A60 from its current 256Mb will definitely be beneficial although I suspect the improvement will not be exactly breath-taking.

I would suggest using the task monitor (available from the Task Manager, while running some of your applications to see just what you memory usage actually is.

You currently have 64Mb of your existing RAM allocated for graphics use, and you may be able to reduce this to 32Mb or even 16Mb to give you some extra RAM capacity in the advanced Display options.

The real gain from adding extra RAM will come if you want to run several concurrent applications.

Hi there

I have an Equium L20-264 which is "dying" and been advised to upgrade memory. Spec below.

Equium L20-264 Part Number : PSL2ZE-00500CAV Key Features - Intel® Celeron® M processor 360
- Windows® XP Home Edition
- 60 GB Hard Disk Drive
- 256 MB DDR2 RAM
- 15" TFT colour display
- DVD Super Multi (Double Layer) drive

1. How do I remove existing memory? Is there a user guide on doing this?

2. How many slots does it have?

3. What is the max memory per slot?

4. Can I buy memory from Toshiba direct?

This is quite urgent and would appreciate a quick response.

Many thanks in advance

Answer:Memory upgrade for Equium L20-264

Hi mate.

As far as I know your notebook supports two memory slots.
They should be placed at the bottom of the unit.
If you don?t know how to change this then I would recommend checking the user manual!
The manual can be downloaded from the Toshiba European page.
I think the notebook can be upgraded to 2GB RAM?. So you could use 1GB RAM in one slot.

PS: you have to use the PC2-4200 DDR2 RAM - 200pin modules

I own a Satellite a100-912 and I want to upgrade its memory!
As it seems, this model supports only PC2-4200 DDR2 SODIMM modules (533 Mhz). Before bying a memory module that might regret, I want to know if there will be any compatibility issues if I use to this laptop PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM module (800 Mhz).

Answer:Memory upgrade on a Satellite A100-912

As far as I know the FSB is able to handle 667Mhz modules.
You can use lower modules (533Mhz) without any problems but modules with higher Mhz will not run with full speed due to the limited FSB.

So I don?t recommend buying 800Mhz modules. Firstly they are not supported and secondly it?s waste of money!

I want to be as sure as I can be, I have already bought memory from Crucial - it doesn't I want to be sure I get it right next time.

Satellite A100-232, currently has 512 Mb - I believe I can go up to 2 Gb and understand that 2 x 1 GB is better than 1 x 2GB - is this true ?

Next - WHICH?? memory - based on a search on their website I bought 2 x 1GB sticks from Crucial, they advised DDR2 PC2 5300 and it did not work. Despite repeated emails they insist that these sticks are the 'replacement' for DDR2 PC2 4200 (which is now strongly indicated to me from my recent research as the correct memory - part # PA3411U -1M1G).

If I now buy 2 x 1 Gb - DDR2 PC2 4200 (from a different supplier of course) will I be doing the right thing ?????????? Assuming the new memory works, I'll be getting in touch with Crucial for some money (of course).

>Satellite A100-232, currently has 512 Mb - I believe I can go up to 2 Gb and understand that 2 x 1 GB is better than 1 x 2GB - is this true ?

You can upgrade the RAM up to 2GB and usually you should use 2 x 1GB RAM 533Mhz.
In my case one big module was not recognized. I had to use 2 x 1GB RAM? but I don?t have this model.

I recommend using brand name modules; Kingston is good and provides good quality modules.
Different manufacturers provide cheaper modules but the performance and the quality is not really good.

Hi All,

Can you also tell me what is SODIMM and if this make a difference ?

Answer:Satellite A100 memory upgrade

the machine can be upgraded to a maximum of 4GB of main memory, and if it´s worthy can by no one be answered, but only by yourself.

Do you really need it? I think the best would be that you upgrade to 2GB since you´re not a graphics designer which has larger pictures (which can be some gigabytes tall :) ).

As a normal user under vista/XP you only need 2GB. You won´t even recognize the jump from 1GB to 2GB of RAM or more.

Regarding the modules FSB frequency: it doesn´t matter which frequency you use, you really won´t gain any performance when using the 667mhz modules, so just obtain a fine pair of 2x2GB sticks with 533Mhz and just enjoy the "speed".

Here´s a little explanation for S0-DIMM:

have fun ;)

Just got an A100-596 laptop & keeps locking up on me. I think I need to upgrade the memory as it only has 512MB.

Question is what sort do I need? I know it DDR2 RAM (533MHz) but what voltage. The Toshiba website info doesn't help much & Crucial's system scanner doesn't list the laptop model.

Answer:Satellite A100-596 - I need to upgrade memory

The voltage is not very important.
You can use the DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) 200-PIN SODIMM modules

The notebook supports the FSB 533Mhz and therefore it does not make sense to upgrade the memory with a 667Mhz modules.

So take the PC2-4200 200-PIN SODIMM and you are on the safe side ;)

For driver updates you must only check the Toshiba website. I can find your notebook and you too? => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Notebook => Equium => Equium P Series => Equium P200D => PSPBNE

Furthermore the notebook can be upgraded to 4GB but you can find this information in the user manual. ;)

there is no relation between usb stick and laptop memory. You can use it to store some data it, it's external storage device.

Is there something I need to alter for all the memory to show ?

Answer:Memory upgrade on Equium U300-15I

The case is clear buddy?

You are using the 32bit Vista and generally the 32bit OS (no matter what OS) can recognize and use only max 3.2GB RAM
That?s simply 32bit limitation.

If you want known more about this issue, check the Microsoft website for details!

Memory upgrade

I have an Equium M40X-230, most documentation indicates that it is expandable to 2 GBytes of RAM.
On the underside it has one memory expansion slot that will take a 1 Gbyte SODIMM, giving me a total of 1.5 G bytes of RAM.

Is there a way to add the other 500 Mbytes. (I am experimenting with Virtual Machines and databases)

Answer:Equium M40X-230 Memory Upgrade

In case anyone is interested!

There is a 500MByte memory module located on the top side of the motherboard. Unfortunately this is mounted internally within the case.
It is located underneath and slightly to the right of the centre of the keyboard.
However the top cover moulding of the Notebook covers the electronics and so it cannot be accessed by simply removing the keyboard. the top cover has to be lifted which also involves removing the screen.

Otherwise the module is mounted in exactly the same socket type as the one underneath the machine.

Good day,

The reason for the question is that Rectron in South Africa says that the A100-599 is supplied with 2x512mb Memory modules and not with 1x1Gb as indicated on the Toshiba site. Rectron advices to purchase 2 x 1Gb memory but will not refund for the 2x512mb memory, thus leaving you pay 2x for what you are actually going to use.

Please just confirm whether the A100-599, sold in South Africa, are indeed with 2x512mb or 1gb as indicated on the site.

Thank you,

Answer:Question about Memory on Satellite A100-599

The A100-599 seems to be sold in European, Middle East and Africa.
I think the notebook was delivered with the 1GB memory module in one slot.
The second memory slot should be free.

your notebook has only this two memory slots. So if you want to upgrade you can't use the 512MB modules.

Ran diagnostic on laptop and was sent the module a needed.or so i thought....... wrong 1 or 1s as i bought 2 x 1G modules in order to " double up".....

Answer:Satellite A100 shuts down after memory upgrade

PC4200 is the speed of the RAM. PC4300 sounds incorrect, maybe its a misprint being confused with PC5300?

Anyway you can generally mix RAM speeds, the system will simply run both Modules at the lowest speed.

Note that some systems cannot run with RAM only in Slot B, so ensure at least one module is in slot A

I've just bought a 1 Gb RAM memory to upgrade my Satellite from 2*512 to 1*1024 + 1*512.
The memory brand is Crucial.

Wherever I put my memory (1 Gb in slot 1, 512 Mb in slot 2 or the opposite), my computer only recognize 1 Gb.

Some ideas about this concern ?
Do I have to put the same size of memory in each slot, may be ?

Thx in advance for your help.

Answer:Satellite A100-551 recognizes only 1GB RAM after memory upgrade

Do you run in Windows Vista?
Some days ago I put an extra 1GB in my mom's laptop and it showed only 800 MB instead of 1.5GB of RAM. It seems that Vista is taking some memory for itself (that's what I've been told).

If that is not the problem, are you sure you bought RAM memory compatible with your laptop? Does it use DDRI or DDRII? I am asking for you didn't write anything about the memory except for the manufacturer.

I have ordered a 1GB stick of memory from Crucial and decided to have a trial run accessing the memory slot. The single Philips head screw retaining the memory cover is easily unscrewed but does not lift out of the cover. The cover then seems to be reluctant to lift off. Does anyone have any info on this seemingly simple task as I do not want to damage the lappy?

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Pro A100 memory upgrade

and the memory cover comes off without too much trouble. Make sure the screw is fully undone, and then gently lever off the cover using a screwdriver or knife under the small tab.The cover has two smaller tabs on the sides, and these click into (and out of) slots.Just take it gently but firmly, and I'm sure the cover will come off.

I have a friend visiting me who has a Equium A60 that is very unstable when she is running multiple applications. I checked and it only has 192 MB RAM memory. Can that be increased and if so by how much. How many slots are there on this machine?

She is currently in the USA and I have checked on the Toshiba USA site and cannot find this PC listed so it must be sold in Europe only. It would be so helpful if someone could tell me what kind of memory it takes so I could look for it here. She is a student and in dire need of a stable computer for her studies.

Thanks so much for any help in advance.

Answer:Equium A60 runs unstable - How can I upgrade the memory?

Of course you can upgrade the memory.
I assume you have only 192MB of main memory because the notebook was delivered with 256MB internal memory and the 64MB are shared by graphic card! Therefore only 192MB are free.

Anyway, as I said the notebook was delivered with 256MB internal memory and this memory is not removable.
Therefore only one slot is upgradeable!
So you can upgrade the memory to max 1280MB (256MB + 1024MB)

You can use these modules:
PC2700 256MB (PA3311U-1M25)
PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-1M51)
PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G)

Do you know where to find the slot???

The slot is placed at the bottom of the unit! The cover is secured with one screw.
Remove this screw and you will be able to open the slot and to upgrade the memory.

PS; I think the memory upgrade is described in the Toshiba user manual which was preinstalled on the notebook.
You can also download such manual from the Tosh page

I'd like to buy A100-906 notebook. It has 1024Mb DDR2 533mGz memory but I want to rise DDR2 memory upto 2Gb. So my question is:
Are these 1024Mb the single DDR2 1024Mb plate in one DDR2 slot and the second DDR2 slot is empty or they are the couple of 512Mb DDR2 plates and both DDR2 slots are occupied?

Answer:Question about DDR2 memory on Satellite A100-906

In my knowledge the notebook was delivered only with one 1024MB module and the second bank is free.
So it should be no problem with a memory upgrade to 2048MB

Form Factor: DIMM 200-pin
Memory Speed: 667Mhz (PC-5300)
CAS Latency:555-12
1.8v (+/- 0.1v)

I do not know who the manufacturer from this RAM module is but I hope you use high quality product. Unfortunately I can not test it with my Satellite A100 but I believe you can use this RAM module.

According some reports here on the forum, maybe you will have problem to get it work together with one old RAM module. Test it please and please let us know how it works.

Anyway, I think you should use 100% compatible module. If you want check it here

Hi guys,

I have a Satellite A100-158, model code PSAA9E-01700VPT. It came with an 80 Gb 5400 rpm S.M.A.R.T. hard drive and 1 Gb DDR2 RAM (533 MHz).

I think my computer is slowing down to a crawl as a result of maybe the hard drive being old and memory low for recent programas so I was thinking of upgrading the hard drive and the memory.

Would a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 rpm 16 mb 2,5 inch fit ? They say it spins at 7200 with the power consumption of a 5400 rpm drive (maybe just bad marketing).

And would a Kingston Memory module 2 GB DDR2 800 MHz work ? It has a higher frequency than my current ram but then I suppose it can fall back to the max allowed by the motherboard ? I assume that would be 533 Mhz like my factory memory module. I can also buy a 2 GB module from the same exact maker DDR 2 as well but 667 MHz instead.. still higher than my current memory module.

Thanks a lot for any tips... hopefully this will bring my A100 more into today's standards without going for a new laptop :)

Answer:Satellite A100 - Memory and hard drive upgrade

Generally speaking a HDD with more rpm isn?t a problem but it needs a little bit more power and produces more heat but it should work.
It?s depending on your applications that you run. For normal usage 5400rpm should be ok.

Also RAM modules with higher specification are no problem because it?s downgrade compatible to lower speed (533 MHz).
Kingston is always recommendable, I never had a problem with these modules. :)

DDR2-533 1GB (PA3411U-2M1G)

Answer:Satellite A100-785 can i upgrade vedio memory from bios

No, you cannot increase RAM of graphic card.
The graphic card memory is always controlled by graphic card driver?.
This means that if additional memory would be necessary, then the graphic card driver would add a part from main memory to graphic card memory?

The whole process runs automatically and you cannot assign anything manually.

Hi all,

I have had my Equium L100-186 for over a year now and have decided to upgrade the memory as the current 256MB is pretty poor.

I purchased 2x1GB sticks and put them in with no problem. Unfortunately it now doesn't boot up. I had returned two sticks, presuming 1 was faulty, but having received the new sticks with the same problem, I presume it isn't.

I have tried both stick in on their own and they work. They both work in each of the clips as well.

Has anyone come across this problem before, or does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Equium L100-186 - Memory Expansion Question

Hmm?. Very strange? if you use right and same modules then both should run without any problems.
The notebook is able to handle max 2GB (2 x 1024MB) modules.

What you could do is to test both memory slots separately. Maybe one slot is faulty?
What do you think?

However, I found some information about the compatible and recommended modules and it seems that the DDR2-533 1GB (PA3411U-2M1G) module should run!
You need exactly a DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) 200-PIN SODIMM modules?

Check this!

The notebook should recognize both without any problems?

Hey there,

I've just added a new 512 DDR SO-DIMM to my laptop, and i wanted to know if it was possible to increase the allocation of the memory.

I Currently Have an ATi Radeon Mobility with 64Mb, but wanted to increase this to 128 or 256Mb. I read through previous posts regarding this topic, and they all say that i should use something called UMA in the Bios.

I've checked both pages of the Bios and there is nothing that relates to this. I've tried to update my Bios but i cant get the .ISO file onto a DVD using any of the recommended prgrams.

If anyone can help me, i'd be cery grateful.

Answer:Equium EA60-199 Graphics Memory Question

Hi Richard,

The UMA (Unified Memory Architecture) setting is shown in the BIOS set-up first page (assuming a Phoenix BIOS). The normal range of allocations is 16Mb, 32Mb, 64Mb (default) ans 128Mb.

Check which BIOS provider you have on your A60. The UMA allocation may be called something else or may be fixed at 64Mb.

I have purchased 2 x 1gb memory modules for my Equium L100-186 and on removing the cover find it looks

professionally ? <<Mike

Answer:Equium L100-186: How to remove & upgrade the memory modules

Usually the memory modules upgrade is not very difficult but a little bit tricky.
A common user should be able to upgrade the memory but please don?t use force but be always gently and careful!!!

In the user manual you should find a detailed description how to remove and how to insert the modules.
Check this ;)

But note; If you have no experience and don?t know how to do this then contact an technician for the help. In such case you are always on the safe side?
