Missing BIOS file for Satellite Pro 4280

Question: Missing BIOS file for Satellite Pro 4280

Downloading the BIOS files for the Satellite Pro 42xx series (specifically the 4280 in my case), I get a nice zip download. Which has the two executables for performing the BIOS load, and a readme in PDF. But no BIOS binary.
Anyone got any idea where to obtain this file?

Preferred Solution: Missing BIOS file for Satellite Pro 4280

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have also downloaded this BIOS and found the CHGBIOSA.EXE and files.
I don?t know why you need the BIOS binary file but the two files in the folder should allow you to create a BIOS FDD which is needed to update the BIOS!

OK, so I found my old SP4280 buried in the loft, and found everything works (except the hard drive, but I've ordered an identical replacement).
I want to install ubuntu on it as I have no windows OS avaliable, but it needs more RAM and a BIOS update.

Will it only take old, now N/A toshiba ram of will it take other brands of RAM with the correct spec? (low density, 100mhz, CL2) And I can't find the BIOS update anywhere on Toshiba's site. Could someone please direct me to it or upload it for me? Thanks.

Quick answers appreciated!

Answer:Re: RAM and BIOS upgrade on Satellite Pro 4280

The info you can get from Toshiba about RAM is that your notebook can handle with max 320 MB RAM.
Compatible RAM is PA3005U-1M12 > 128MB.
This RAM is tested.

Of course you can use other brands. Just be sure you use high quality product and also the same RAM specification.

For BIOS update visit
For Satellite Pro 4280 you can find there BIOS 2.70-TRAD

I decided to revive my old laptop Toshiba SP 4280 but can't get to the system because it is asking me a passowrd at the beginning.
I've tryied to take out a battery from the Moser Board for 24h - but it has not helped.
I've tryed some backdoor passwords, like Toshiba,toshy99 but it has not helped.
I've sucessfully upgraded BIOS to the newest one 2.70-TRAD but it is still asking me for a password.

Could you help me please with this problem?
What can I do ?

BTW I can't enter to BIOS setup and select the source to load (Hard, FD or CD) because I have to enter a password at first.

Thanks a lot!

Answer:Satellite Pro 4280 - Problem with BIOS password

Unfortunately I think only an authorized service provider can help you to get rid of the password because they have special tools to do this and know how to do it. Maybe some jumpers must be set but I don?t know?

On the Toshiba website you can find a list of ASPs? Give them a call and ask for help, that?s all! ;)

My Windows XP has broken down. I can not start up even in safe mode. That's no problem for me. Now I'm trying to start the computer with the Win XP disc but the computer does not boot from cdrom/dvd player.

Big problem is also that I can't access BIOS to change boot sequence. How can I get in to BIOS settings or how do I get the file in WXP that is missing in to the computer?

Answer:How to enter BIOS settings or get missing WXP file on Satellite 1400?

HI Mikael,

The normal way of accessing the BIOS boot sequence is top press the PF12 key during the initial power on sequence until the boot sequence is displayed.

You may also be able to force the notebook to boot from the CD-ROM by holding down the 'C' keyt during power on.

can anyone help me in telling me where i can buy ram for my laptop plz

Answer:Satellite Pro 4280: Where can I buy RAM?

I've found RAM upgrades for your model at Toshiba and at Offtek. These are UK sites. I presume that's what you're after.

On the Toshiba website you have these 3 options. Part numbers PA3003U, PA3004U and PA3005U. I haven't found any info on max memory size here.

Offtek have them slightly differently priced, and say the max memory is 320MB. I presume that is with 64MB built in and 2 slots for additional RAM of 128MB each.
They mention 2 models of the laptop; the Pro 4280XDVD and the Pro 4280ZDVD but they both use the same RAM types.

Hope that suits you.

I have just acquired a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4280 laptop computer. According to the manual it should have a 6.0Gb hard disk but in My Computer it is shown as only having a capacity of 1.34Gb.

PS I formatted the disk to remove all the previous owner's data and operating system and have installed Windows 98SE

[Edited by: admin]

Answer:Satellite Pro 4280 - What is the HDD size?

The Satellite Pro 428Xcdt was definitely delivered with the 6GB HDD.
Are you sure you checked the HDD size correctly???

I assume the 1.34GB is free space on the HDD.

I have a SP 4280 and the original Hard Drive on it failed a while ago. I purchased a Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 40Gb replacement but I can't seem to get it to work. FDisk recognises the drive as a 40Gb drive, and seems to format the drive. However, attempting to write anything to the drive results in an 'invalid media' error message.

Using XP Pro installation to format the drive gives me an error message along the lines of 'Windows cannot format the drive'.

I've attached the drive to my PC using a 2.5" adapter cable and it seems to work fine. I'm also running the latest BIOS version on my laptop. There aren't any jumper settings other than 'cable select' and device 0/1 on the drive.

Anyone know what's wrong, or what I might not be doing or got any suggestions for getting my drive up and running?

Cheers in advance

Answer:Satellite Pro 4280 HDD Replacement

Hi Tony

I think that the BIOS cannot handle the drive correctly.
Therefore you get theese strange problems.

Some drivemanufacturers make a driver to overcome the limit of BIOS. I'm not sure how this driver would work for you but you could try it out.
I'll look for them and edit my post here with links.

Check this place, it might help!

Hi there,

I'm a bit new to all this malarky and could do with some help.

I have a Pro 4280 running 98SE and today tried to upgrade to XP Professional. It all seems to have gone ok but the display is awful!!

I have tried to change the screen res in the control panel but with no success.

Is it just a case of updating the display driver or is there something else that I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite Pro 4280 - display driver?

If you install the OS graphic card uses just Standard driver installed by OS. If there is no possibility to change the resolution you should try to install the right driver. Your unit has "S3 Savage IX" graphic chip installed. Please check producer download site and check if there is possible to download the right driver.

I don't know where the problem is with the windows 2000 installation, but you can try to get a recovery CD for this model from a Toshiba service partner. On this CD is an image which contains an OS and all needed drivers and software from Toshiba.

Whilst updating the BIOS the system froze at step 7 of replacing the BIOS code, needless to say the laptop will not boot as the BIOS is now corrupt.

I have the BIOS.BAK but need advice on how to restore the BIOS. I copied the BIOS.BAK to a usb stick and plugged this into the laptop and then powered on the system (I've tried holding down F, F2 and together). I can see that the usb stick flickers initially but clearly does not progress with the restore.

I hope someone might be able to advise how to use the BIOS.BAK file to restore the BIOS.

As far as I know the BIOS package downloaded from the Toshiba US driver page contains the WinRAR 32-bit self-extracting ZIP file which includes both Windows-based and diskette based BIOS update installation options.

Did you try to update the BIOS using Win-based BIOS?

What OS do you use?

computer won't boot saying missing NTLDR file missing. Down loaded from Nortons a bios update program, said to disable bios virus, it came up I disabled it. now nothing xp

Answer:Missing NTLDR file, This must be a BIOS file

NTLDR is the boot loader for NT-based operating systems (NT, 2K, XP, Vista, 7). What your machine is trying to tell you is that it can't find the bootloader, either due to a defective hard drive, misconfigured BIOS setting, or possibly something as simple as a floppy/CD/DVD inadvertently left in the drive. You'll need to determine which, but if there's no disc in the CD/DVD drive, it's a distinct possibility your hard drive is going bad."Channeling the spirit of jboy..."

I have a strange problem with a Satellite C660-18C, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

This is a friend's laptop that crashed a little while ago. He appears to have tried to reinstall an operating system, although not using the recovery media, which he never made when the notebook was new. He has not managed to do this, so asked me to take a look.

The hard disk is still the original Toshiba disk that shipped with the laptop, although it has been removed and replaced. This was done to do some basic testing on the hard disk, which showed no errors.

If you boot the laptop from a USB stick with a Windows 7 Pro installation image, you get as far as choosing a partition to install Windows on to. It shows "Disk 0 Unallocated Space 232.9GB"

However, it reports "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I have looked in the Bios and I can see no trace of the hard disk. For instance, if you look under "Boot", this list only shows, CD/DVD, FDD, LAN and USB.

It seems to make no difference whether the SATA mode is set to "AHCI" or "Compatibility"

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Satellite C660-18C HDD missing from BIOS

Usually good working HDD should be listed in BIOS (first BIOS page).
There you should see the HDD name and the size.

If first BIOS page does not provide any details about the HDD, then the HDD was not recognized by BIOS and in most cases this means that the HDD is faulty.

If you are 100% sure that this HDD isn?t faulty (for example it works in connection with another notebook), then an HDD controller malfunction could cause the problem?

But I guess it?s an HDD issue?

Hey everyone,

I use my Satellite C660 Notebook for some music production and I try to get my extern Presonus Audio Interface working. All is well so far except some occasional cracking noises in the AudioInterface. After fixing some things in Windows 7 that were recommended by tech support from Presonus these noises were still there.
So Tech support then gave me the following advice:

+"There are some power options that can be tweaked in your BIOS that may be causing the noise you are experiencing.+

+CPU Settings Section - Intel SpeedStep set to normal.+
+CPU Settings Section - Turbo Mode set to normal not turbo mode.+
+CPU Settings Section (if applicable) - Processor Operation Mode will have 3 settings, Normal, Fast, Extreme (??). Set it to 'Normal'+

+Power Settings: - C1E Support+
+Power Settings: - C3E Support (if it's there)+

+Save BIOS and restart.+

+Typically overclocking CPU's like the iSeries can cause the CPU power to fluctuate causing issues with noise on your audio devices, it is a new find and we are writing a FAQ that will be available on our knowledge base that will have a detailed description on the reasons why this occurs on over clocking CPU's.+

+Make sure any overclocking settings have been set to normal."+

*So for the first Time I entered BIOS only to find that none of these settings can be made on this Toshiba Satellite c660.*

Or can they somehow still be made? Are there tools, programs,...?

Answer:Missing BIOS Settings Satellite C660

If the settings are not available in BIOS, you will not be able to change it or to appear it within the BIOS.

Mostly the Phoenix BIOS would be used by different manufacturers but the BIOS is always modified by manufacturers and configured for each notebook series.
Therefore particular settings are not always available in each BIOS.

I read in the presonus forum about crackling sound using dual core CPUs.
One guy could solve this using another USB port.

So maybe you should test all available USB ports.

Another option could be the usage of external USB hub connected to external power source?now quite sure if this would help to get rid of such noises but its worth a test.

Last but not least you could test this with connected and disconnected AC adapter

Bought a Satellite C660-22v on ebay which seems to work fine except none of the Tosh utilities are present.

I was going to reload the OS and downloaded the manual which say I need to set the BIOS to default. The previous owner has set the password on it and has told me what it is. What I want to know is, can I do the system restore without resetting the BIOS or how do I get the Tosh utilities?

Answer:Satellite C660 - missing utilities, BIOS not in default

To be honest I don?t understand what do you mean with these missing utilities. Fact is that this notebook was delivered with original preinstalled Win7 home premium. If you have recovery disc reinstall OS and start to use notebook with ?factory settings? that includes all Toshiba tools and utilities. If you want to install some of them additionally you can download them from

Generally speaking you can do system restore without changing BIOS settings but now when you want to use notebook from other person I think best thing is to remove BIOS password, set BIOS to default settings, reinstall OS and start to use notebook with original ?factory settings?. Later you can configure notebook and change the settings.

I've been looking around for about an hour now, reading other threads and searching manually through the driver database, but I'm unable to find any usefull information.

As you can see from the following screenshot...
...I'm missing a driver.

I'm pretty sure the driver is listed, but it might also be listed under another name. This is not something I'm infamiliar of, having searched a lot on other sites (Acer, HP, etc...) for drivers for other computers as a part of my job.

The reason this driver is missing on my *Satellite A100-680* is that my antivirus detects it as a keylogger. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I can easilly restore it from the virus vault if I wish to. However, this is something I don't actually wish to do.

This problem has also occured with some of my sound drivers earlier, as well as the driver associated with the TOSHIBA Hotkey functions. (Solved.)

In order to verify for myself whether my antivirus detects a false positive or not, I wish to find the driver and install it.
If after that my antivirus doesn't detect it as a keylogger, it was right all along.
If it does detect it as a keylogger, I will treat the result as a false positive and add it to the whitelist.

My Toshiba is a Satellite A100-680, running Win XP Home edition.

Did you try to remove this device from the device manager list and reboot the notebook?
Try this! After new reboot the OS should search for the driver and should reinstall this device automatically.

By the way: Satellite A100-680 belongs to PSAA9E series.
The Toshiba European driver page provides the BIOS 6.00-WIN update for this unit?
Would recommend installing the Common Modules for XP and updating the BIOS.

Does anyone know the BIOS version this laptop came with to downgrade? Also, If I reinstall windows will I get a new bios version or wlll it be unaffected?

Answer:Satellite Pro L670-18F - Drivers missing after BIOS update

Did you download and install the correct BIOS version for your notebook? Satellite Pro L670-18F belongs to PSK3FE series as far as I know so did you choose the BIOS for this model series?

Furthermore I would recommend loading the default settings in BIOS. Just press F9 key if you are in BIOS setup.

If you reinstall Windows, the BIOS will not be affected. BIOS and Windows are different, you will always have the current version even you change operating system.

So, i have a toshiba satellite p200 1jy i upgrade the bios version ( bios pheonix ) to 2.70 but when i upgrade up i i don't have the sata option ahci mode or ide i don't have this option but i had it before upgrade,
so please what can i do to switch to ahci mode or ide mode, can i downgrade the bios version

Thanks you so mmuch

Answer:Satellite P200 - missing SATA option after BIOS update

I have P200 too but until now I didn?t change BIOS version so I cannot confirm that.
As I can see on Toshiba BIOS download page there are two versions:
2.70 and 5.40 designed for user who want to install WXP.

I don't know which operating system do you use but if you use Vista or Win7 you don't need this option in BIOS. By default SATA controller mode it will be set to AHCI mode so your HDD will run with full speed.
In my opinion there is no reason for panic.

Hi Spencer,

I presume that you gave tried to re-install your system from the recovery CDs. If so then the system should boot correctly. If it does not and it still reports a missing SYSTEM file then I think your hard drive may be suspect.

If you can boot the unit into 'SAFE' mode try running a check of the hard drive to see if it reports any bad sectors.

Answer:Satellite A40 laptop: missing windows file at boo up

that's not at all easy!
To be able to reinstall single files you need the real installation media or the file from a friend with the same WinXP version as You have.
Furthermore, it's very unlikely that replacing the file will help.

The recovery you have contains a compressed installed WinXP so it's not so easy to get the file from there.

If You don't want to use the recovery (it will erase everything on your disc) I'd suggest that you check with your friends if they have the same WinXp version as you have. Probably WinXP Home English? Which servicepack? SP1 or 2?
Then copy that file from their machine to your machine.
Hopefully this will help but probably not.

Good luck!

Could use all the help available for this problem.
I have an A200/J06 Core 2 Duo laptop currently running Windows XP Pro (or not runnning anymore).
The problem is that when the machine attempts to start up, I get the following:

"Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt :

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

The machine did not come with a setup disc. It does however have Recovery discs for XP and Vista.
My problem is that if i try to use the XP recovery disc, it wants to wipe the hard drive partitions as part
of the process. Without being able to start up the machine, i am not able backup the data before starting
this recovery process.

Any solutions please?

Answer:Satellite A200 - missing system file

As you said; Toshiba Recovery disk doesn?t contain the Repair console but only the original Windows XP from the Microsoft CD.

So either you will take a Windows XP (buy it or borrow it) and will repair the OS or you will recover the whole notebook using the Toshiba disk.

These two options are available. Now it?s your choice?.

Hi everyone,

I downloaded the BIOS driver and tried to install it through an external CD drive, but it did not work out.
Could you please help me at all?

Look forward to hearing from you

Answer:Portege 3500: system32 file missing - BIOS update?

I can?t believe that and virus can damage the BIOS!!!
I think you have updated the BIOS with the wrong procedure!!!
Did you check the document how to update the BIOS?

Anyway, the system32 fault has nothing to do with BIOS and I don?t understand why you started the BIOS update.

The Portege 3500 does not support an internal drive and therefore if you want to install the OS you have to use a compatible external PC-card drive.
I assume you use such drive for booting.

If some error messages appear during the installation procedure, you should firstly format the whole HDD and delete all partitions and then try again to boot from the recovery CD!

Toshiba EU driver page provides only Win-based BIOS version.
This means that BIOS update can be executed from running Windows system.

But I found on Toshiba US driver page BIOS packages which contain both versions.

But the point is that you will not find an European notebook model on Toshiba US driver page.
So in such case you have to find an Satellite C855 US model equivalent to your European model.

I?m from Ukraine. My friend bought laptop Satellite C655-S5507. After a week he got a black screen while turning on laptop. Laptop was bought in USA, and there is no possibility to send it in an official service center.
It seems to be that BIOS crashed. I have an experience in laptop repairing, and I?m sure that this is problem with BIOS.

I went on an official Toshiba web-site on support page, to get BIOS file (I'd like to use USB programmer, to flash the BIOS), but there are no such a model (C655-S5507). I've read that this model was produced for some stores in USA, and there are no official drivers for it and also bios file.

Please send it (BIOS file) there or on email ([email protected]) , because laptop without it will be sold by parts, and there are no possibility to repair it without original BIOS file :( .

Answer:Need BIOS file for Satellite C655-S5507

You are right. This is US notebook model. Problem is that I cannot find anything on this US support page.

My advice is to post this on US Toshiba forum and hopefully someone there will be able to help.

Hello everyone and Greetings from Germany,

I crashed my BIOS due to an power failure during the Flashing-Process.
The Laptop can be started in Recovery-Mode (Fn + B) and it accesses the floppy disk drive! I just need an BIOS.WPH or Platform.bin (for the 2.50a-Bios) to reflash it with the Phoenix Crisisrecovery-Disk...

Can anybody help me with that? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite X200-251 - Need BIOS file for recovery

On the Toshiba website you can only download the Windows based update. The traditional update (DOS) is not available for newer notebooks anymore.

What you can do is contacting nearest authorized service provider. Maybe the guys can send you the traditional BIOS update and then you can start the update process again. Just give them a call and ask for that. ;)

But don?t forget BIOS recovery is a risky procedure and you could destroy the whole ROM module. Alternative this should be done from an ASP, they can do this for you.

I got a Toshiba Satellite Pro A300, that says the System32\hal.dll file is corrupt or missing.

Is there some way to repair the file by a recovery by the laptop self, or do I have to get a copy of Windows Vista to boot on and do it that way?

Hope to get some possible answers to what to do.

thanks Christian

Answer:Satellite Pro A300 - System32\hal.dll file is corrupt or missing

I read some threads in different forums and in most cases the new OS installation could solve this. The HAL.dll in placed in C:\Windows\system32 so maybe you could solve this by copy this file from Vista CD to this folder?

You could boot up the unit using a bootable Live CD (linux or windows lice CD called PartBe or WinPE)?
But the easiest solution would be the recovery procedure?

Ive got the above laptop and its been working fine since purchased in december. The other day though as i was installing a program it crashed and now when i try to start it up it keeps coming up with a error message saying "file missing or corrup. system32\driver\ntfs.sys" and to fix this by using the original windows xp disk.

The windows was already pre-installed on the lap-top and i have no such disk, ive run the recovery disk but that hasnt fixed the problem. Ive even tried to create a boot disk using nero burner but you need a windows xp disk to do that.

Is there anywere round this without sending it away to be fixed or going out and buying windows xp?

Answer:Satellite A60: Boot up problem (file missing or corrupt)

Try doing a low level format of the disc before running the recovery CD.

Hi, I have a problem which I hope someone will be able to help me out on.

My laptop (satellite) suddenly couldn't boot anymore, saying that the following file was missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system.

After doing some research I accessed the recovery console (using an xp cd) and tried to replace it. Making a back up of the original and replacing it from c:\windows\repair\system.bak

Now, the computer starts to boot, it shows the XP Home edition loading screen, but then the screen goes blank. And nothing happens. When I try to access the recovery console again, it asks me for the Administrator password when I try to log on to the windows installation. I then ran a program that can find the admin password and discovered that there was no admin password. However, just pressing return is denied!

I am now stuck. If anyone could offer any tips or ideas about how I can fix this, without a complete re format, as there are some important files on the laptop, that would be great!!

Cheers. I'm going crazy!

Answer:My Satellite doesn’t start any more – missing or corrupt file

Hello Philip

I really don?t believe that you will be able to solve your problem. In my opinion you should connect your HDD to other unit as external device and try to back up your data.

If you can do this reinstall the OS using recovery CD. Check also this interesting topics

I have the above laptop, and I had a problem with a virus on it.
I put in the Toshiba recovery disk, and when it goes through the reformatting process, it says that there is a problem finding the '' file.

I have NO idea how to solve this problem, I have searched the internet endlessly trying to find the file.
I have 2 recovery disks, and they both do the same thing, so I think its generally a problem with my laptop.

The operating system is Windows XP.

Any ideas guys? Thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite A100-225 - Cannot recover - missing file

Did you try to install the windows using the original Microsoft CD?
This would be helpful to find out if the Recovery disks are damage or if there is something wrong with the notebooks hardware.

If the XP installation from Win XP CD would be successful then you could install the Toshiba drivers from the driver website

Why you need the full name of the BIOS file 3.9?
It?s not on the download page anymore because a newer BIOS version has been uploaded?
Even you would know the full file name you would be not able to download it?

Only the newest BIOS versions are ready for download!

I've just bought two new Satellites an L655-1EM and a L655-17V (I think - the pink one and the red one). Anyhow I've been trying to burn some recovery media - which I find a bit cheapo, making us do it ourselves!

During the process it tells me there is a missing file and crashes out. I tried this on both machines and the same result. I'm using dual layer discs. Any ideas? Do Toshiba shell out a recovery disc under such circumstances - I've already got three DL frisbees lol.
I'm more than a little concerned as if something bad happens I've no confidence that I'll be able to recover.

Any advise/tips ?
Thanks in advance :)

Help needed, I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D-11V laptop which when turned on gives the message that a system registry file is missing or corrupt.

My problem is that when on very first setup I did not back up the recovery files onto DVD in case of such problems like this, my questions are, is there any way around this without the recovery disk to reinstall Vista from hardrive?

I cant find a way to do this or will Toshiba provide a recovery disk or software to download (free or to buy) and is this the only option that is available to solve my problem?

The laptop is still under warranty for another 11 months am I covered for hardware/software in this situation having taken it back to the shop I bought it from they said they could not do anything without the recovery disk.

Help, many thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite L300-11V - System registry file is missing or corrupt

You can reinstall Vista without the recovery disks. If want to repair your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer"
and follow the menue instructions).

Normally you had should burn the recovery disk at the first startup. There is a reminder that pop ups from time to time to burn the disk.
So Toshiba does not offer a software to download, it?s all preinstalled on the notebook.

After the reinstalling, please create the recovery disk. If you need one and didn?t burn such, you have to pay.

I have a SatA105 without a recovery disc, but there is a utility on it called Recovery Disc Creator. But when I try to start it, it gives me an error message that the rdc_info.ini is missing or corrupt.
It is there, so I opened it, and it's looking for a file at Z:\giinfo.ini which is not being found!

What does that mean? Can I not make a recovery disc? or can I get a copy of it from some one, and then will it work? Or is the recovery disc info not one the computer any more?

What can I do now?

Answer:Satellite A105: Cannot create Recovery CD - missing rdc_info.ini file

Hello Jim

Unfortunately I don?t have an US notebook model and really don?t know what is wrong there. Usually there should not be problems if you use preinstalled Recovery Disc Creator. The image is stored on hidden partition.

Please be sure you do it on right way. How it works exactly you can read HERE

Otherway you should contact service partner in your country. I am pretty sure they can help you or maybe create one recovery media for you.

My DVD is brand new, without any scratches.
Also while creating the recovery discs, there was no issue, it got 100% successful.

What can i do now?
I need the laptop in my studies very urgent and its .....
I left message on 1-800- Toshiba also, but got no response :-(

Answer:PREINST2.SWM file is missing while recovery procedure on Satellite A300

Did you try to use the HDD recovery procedure (if possible)???

Press F8, while notebook powering up. Choose repair my computer.
Then a new window will open. Then you could start the recovery from HDD.
But this would be possible if the HDD recovery folder has not been changed.

If HDD recovery is not possible, I recommend formatting the HDD using an Windows XP CD.
Then try to boot from the Toshiba Recovery DVD again.

Hi pkerk,

Why the BIOS update crashed and why you did an update?

Anyway, everything what you can download on Toshiba website is newest BIOS version with Windows based update program. I never saw other BIOS versions only and it would be useless because newest version is most stable and fixes the most problems.

Maybe you can get the original BIOS file from an authorized service provider so get in contact with the guys.
Normally they can also reflash the ROM module for you because they have professional tools. :)

I have a power problem that is sending me nuts. To begin with the mains light, front left LED, remained on with the mains lead disconected but battery light kept blinking in orange.
Accidently shorted the mains pin in the back of the unit, which stopped that happening but now the battery will not power the laptop. Battery is still good, tried it in a collegues unit and it was fine. Laptop still works fine with mains but I would like to resolve the battery problem.

It is possible that the pins are now to short and there is no contact at all. Unfortunately it is not easy to make any kind of diagnostic on this way and in my opinion you should contact the technicians and explain them the situation. I am pretty sure that they can give you a good advice.

I am unable to burn CD on my notebook. This previously has never been a problem, however recently no matter what type of burn software I use I cannot burn to cd. I am currently using ITunes version 6 and after the cd burning process starts my computer ejects the cd and I get error 4280.

I have read a few different posts on this on other forums which suggest using different CD to re-installing an older version of Itunes ( I am currently using v6), however the most interesting one seemed to come from Hewlett Packard's support site. They suggest opening the cd configuration folder and editing the file gcdrtype.cfg. This was applicable for a certain type of compaq presario desktop pc and goes on to advise to edit a line in the narrative, save and reboot and voila. The problem should be solved. Where to start? I run Windows XP Professional, recent problems with the WINLOGON.EXE file missing meant a full re-format of the drive and I lost tons of work. During the course of many other re-boots, re-formats and re-instalations the error moves. It eventually settled on missing WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file.

After many adventures I got it running but it has come back!!!

Researching this on the web I tried using the recovery console and copied the file from the CD to the disk using:-
c:cd system~1\_resto~1\rp4\snapshot> copy _registry_machine_system c:windows\system32\config\system

Feeling cocky I restarted the PC only to find the missing file has moved again to system32driverspci.sys

Having spent the last three weeks trying to fix this I am at my wits end and the PC needs to be fixed or grow wings as it will be flying out the window shortly. I am no PC wizard but can follow instructions. I have read each error but no report on this type of series of errors. I thought a reinstallation and keeping the PC off line would fix it - but it only lasts for a day or two.

Help please?

When you go to the following link: and scroll about 3/4 of the way down the webpage, it says that there is a v1.41 version of the BIOS (as shown below), and it also says that v1.41 is the current version of the BIOS, however there is no link to download v1.41 of the BIOS or the accompanying readme.txt file like there is say for v1.40 of the BIOS - see below: Package | UEFI BIOS              | ECP                             |    Release1.41        | 1.41 (8BET61WW) | 1.36 (8AHT42WW)    | Current Release 1.40        | 1.40 (8BET60WW) | 1.36 (8AHT42WW)    | 8buj19us.exe                                                  | 8buj19us.txt Also at the very top of the same webpage, it says that v1.42 is the current version of the BIOS NOT v1.41.  If you look at the Readme.txt file, it indicates that there was indeed a v1.41 of the BIOS released, however version 1.41 of the BIOS is ... Need To Access BIOS through Windows. System is a DELL 520 Desktop. The F2 message is missing at startup so rebooting doesn't work. Somehow, the "boot order" has been changed and it is skipping my C: drive and CD Rom, so even a bootable CD doesn't work. In other words, windows doesn't startup because it's skipping over the operating system. If I can get into the BIOS I can put the boot order back to how it should be.

Answer:F2 BIOS menu missing on start up, need a way to enter BIOS

How do you expect to access the BIOS through Windows, even if it could, if the system wont boot? There is only one way to get into the BIOS and that is at start up.What do you get on the screen if anything? The boot order doesn't change by itself. I suspect there is something else wrong. If you insert a bootable CD in to the CD drive and everything else is working it will boot from that if everything else fails.Failing that you should gt a message to insert a bootable disc or reference to PXE Boot ROM failure. If you get non of these then it is something more than the boot order.Stuart

Answer:Windows 7 64bit unable to file missing file in Hijackthis log file

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

Hi All ! Excuse my poor english because i'm french.

A friend gives me his Notebook (a Satellite 4090CDS exactly) because he had a probleme.
In fact, the problem is that when I switch on the computer, i have one and only one message(not even the red toshiba logo) which is "Ready for BIOS update. Place the BIOS update diskette in the drive, and press any key when ready to proceed."

So I go on french toshiba website, in the BIOS download, i find that i have to download this update:

Ok, i download and unzip it to a diskette and i boot the notebook with the disjette, it said that the update was made successfully and automatically reboot.
This time, the red toshiba logo appears, but next i have a black screen with a message:

**** Bad check sum (CMOS) ****
Check system. Then press [F1] key.

And after that, i can't do anything, not even press F1. If i reboot the notebook, i meet myself one more time with the first message "Ready for BIOS update..." and it is still and still the same.

If anyone could help me to understand what is the problem, it would be very nice.

Answer:Satellite 4090 BIOS issue - "Ready for BIOS update..." message appears

It sounds as if your CMOS chip has a problem. It?s possible that the CMOS battery has failed and your BIOS settings are being lost.
Maybe the RTC battery is empty. In this case you should plug the AC adaptor to charge the RTC battery.
Please note that the RTC battery (CMOS battery) will charge after the notebook main battery was fully charged. In this case the charging procedure could take several hours.

But if after this long charging procedure this message appears again so I assume the battery is dead.
I suggest you contact your nearest ASP to get your notebook checked.

My last BIOS update has failed and now my laptop Satellite PrU400 PSU45E is out of order.
I want to use the Crisis Recovery Disk with an USB floppy drive but I don't know the key combination to run the boot-block.
Is anybody can help me?

Best regards

Answer:Satellite Pro U400 BIOS update failed - What is BIOS Boot-block access

I wondering what Crisis Recovery Disk do you have ?:|
In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

Well, I have used the BIOS updater listed on the drivers/bios updates section of Toshiba website, on Windows vista x64 and offcourse I have used the x64 executable.
Strangely, when I reboot it, it requests a bios password that I have never inserted. So I suppose the update inserted a password automatically. Now I can't boot from any device so I cant use the laptop.

What do you have to say about this?

Answer:After Vista x64 BIOS update Satellite A200-1KB PSAE6 requests BIOS password

Hello MC

Have you founded some answers? Nobody offered here real explanation what can be wrong there. Have you maybe contacted authorized service partner in your country. They have contact with Toshiba and I am pretty sure they can help you about that.

If you will find out something regarding this password issue please let us know.

My Sat M30 laptop start with an bios error. The error says "Resource conflict, edit bios setting or boot" If select "boot" computer hangs before windows completely starts. I remove the wi-fi and the modem module and the same error appears. I can't upgrade the bios because the windows don't start. The bios version is 1.7. The laptop is UK version. If select "edit bios", bios start but I can't find any resource management.

(sorry for my english, I am from Spain)

Answer:Satellite Pro M30 Bios error Resource conflict - Edit bios setting or boot

I think the error ?edit bios setting? means that you should access the BIOS and should set the BIOS back to the default settings.

Please do this, save the settings and try to boot up!

Like a complete idiot I upgraded my bios (to 1.80) for Satellite A30 (PSA30E). I've noticed two problems.

a) during boot I no longer get any welcome screen, and cannot access the bios or boot from other devices - so if I want to boot from CD now I can't - e.g. impossible to reinstall OS in the future

b) the battery suddenly wasn't fully charged and hangs persistently on 99% (apparently)

c) who knows what else could be going wrong

I'd dearly love to undo what I've done, but it doesn't seem possible. How on earth do I fix this, since clearly the bios update is flawed. Can I find an earlier bios update file (and how to use it)? Can I fix this one?

Anyone any thoughts?

Answer:Bios update Satellite A30 - can't access bios and no full charge light

Firstly may to ask why you have updated the BIOS. If everything works the BIOS update is not necessary.

Ok, how did you try to access the BIOS? Usually the F2 button should be pressed immediately after notebook starting. You can try to press several times.

But you can boot from ODD on different ways. You can press C button and the notebook will activate the booting from the drive or you will press F12 and you will choose the ODD as booting source.

I don?t know why the battery power freezes at 99% but you could try to remove the battery and wait several times. Then connect it again and check the battery status.

I have a Satellite Pro A120 laptop. Has long been asking me for a password when starting.

The BIOS password prompt:
ALERT: System protection failure!
Password =

I found somewhere that is the problem of the BIOS and should be updated. The Official ASP toshiba costs ? 67 plus shipping for resetting the BIOS. Somewhere I found that pressing CTRL, TAB, CTRL and ENTER Response Code asks.
The ASP can provide this code for free?

To be honestly, I have no idea about these codes. Try to contact Asp ask them if they provide this code, Don't think if anyone can response this issue in this forum.

Hello, I have updatet BIOS of my notebook sattelite A100.

After updating I cannot start my notebook and BIOS doesn't start.

Answer:Satellite A100 - Windows and BIOS doesn't start after BIOS update

Do you see the Toshiba logo?

Was there a power failure when you updated the BIOS?

Try removing the battery and AC Adapter, and leaving it for a couple of hours. You could also try reseating the RAM.

If that doesn't help, you may need to send it to an Authorized Service Center for repair.

Toshiba 5205 - Serviceman / Call Bios - Need some help.

I flashed my bio's and the laptop locked up in windows and didn't shut off after the flash.

Now when I turn the laptop on, I get no picture and the front of the laptop has a remote lcd display that says: Serviceman / Call BIOS.

I have already remove the laptop's battery and let it sit a full day to killthe bios, but I get the same error and still no picture.

How can I fix this? The bio's should be dead by now. Am just using the ac-power pack for power. I tryed plugging the battery pack back in and I have also put the bio's battery back in. and I get the samething error message on the remote lcd.

There must be a way to get around this, if anyone knows please let me know.

Answer:Satellite 5205 - After Bios update - Serviceman / Call Bios message

Hi Jim,

Unfortunately removing the battery will not reset your BIOS. The BIOS is maintained by a separate battery on your motherboard (the CMOS or RTC battery) and you will need to dismantle your notebook to access this battery. Even removing the CMOS battery will not reset your BIOS since it will be held in a non-volatile area of the CMOS chip.

You will need to take your notebook to a Toshiba Authorised Service Agent to have the chip reflashed with a new BIOS.

Hello all,

I have a Satellite P850/040 and after updating BIOS to the new version 1.50 I have checked that a BIOS user password has been configured, though I can boot the operating system.

This is incredible. I'm very disappointed with Toshiba.

How can I remove that password? Maybe with any JCMOS jumper?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Re: Satellite P850 sets a BIOS user password after updating to BIOS 1.50

Unfortunately something like this will not work. Best thing you can do now is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

You must not be disappointed. I know it is stupid situation now but make a call, explain the situation and the guys will help you.

Can you find phone number?

I'm having trouble flashing my bios.
I have a Satellite Pro L40-15A.

The Toshiba winflash tool that comes with the bios file tells me that the 'Old BIOS can't recognise EEPROM'

I was recommended to use AFUDOS on another forum but that tells me the bios has an invalid boot block.

AMI flas for dos tells me the flash rom is write-protected??? There is no option in bios to disable it and I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to put a hardware Bios protect jumper on a laptop.

Please help

Answer:BIOS update issue on Satellite Pro L40-15A - Old BIOS can't recognise EEPROM

Dear Bruce

Can you please tell me what you want to do and please explain to us your steps to update BIOS on your Satellite Pro notebook?

I have done BIOS update over 20 times last month and I am really wondering what you want to say with terms like EEPROM or AFUDOS. Which BIOS update version you want to use? I presume 5.10. am I right?

Hello all,

I used Toshiba's BIOS update utility on this machine. It was working fine before, now it gets stuck with the Toshiba splash logo. Pressing F2 and/or F12 do not work. Pressing esc. Gives the following error. No TPM or TPM has problem. Everything else seems as normal. It show Bios 6.00 which is what I'd in theory flashed it to.

I'm guessing the flash went bad. Is there an emergency recovery procedure for this?

I have a Satellite A110, I was doing a flash upgrade using the utility from Phoenix inside windows XP. The Upgrade flash my desktop, I needed to unplug the battery to be abble to reboot the Notebook. After that every time that I try to power on the notebook it ask me a password on the BIOS but I never has put a password inside the BIOS.

How can I do please ?

Answer:Satellite A110 - BIOS password after BIOS upgrade interruption

If the BIOS settings were corrupted, the system may think there is a password.

Basically you need to get the password removed professionally. An ASP can do it for you, I dont know if they will charge you unless its something they will cover for free.
