PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

Question: PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

I am thinking to use one PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port. The program that i need to use is running under DOS and needs two serial ports. My question is what i need to run the program and the serial port to be recognized by the system. I have a 4200 satellite pro series laptop.

Thank you

Preferred Solution: PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

Why on earth should you want that ?
Your laptop has a serial port hasn't it ?

Well for serial ports are standard supported under Windows. In a Dos-box this should be no problem.

But pure Dos could be a problem.
I guess you also need DOS-drivers for your PCMCIA-card...

Well, I think so. Just do some google image search on "Serial port" and see if that's you mean.

Since installing SP3 to my Windows XP Pro system my RS232 serial port no longer works. I have a Hyperpen tablet that has an RS232 connection so it no longer functions. Is there a converter that I can attach to the male RS232 so I can connect via a USB port? I have seen a USB 2.0 to RSB (male) serial adapter dongle but that is of no use. I'd appreciate any suggestions towards resolving this.

Answer:RS232 serial port not working

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it is working there , or if there any conflicts . It won't have just broken , it must be a software problem as it occurred as you loaded SP3 , it might just need reconfiguring , what does the tablet need in terms of port speed etc. , data bits , flow control etc. ? Hi - here's an idiot question for you. I need to know whether or not my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200) has something called an RS232 serial port. I think it probably doesn't, as I couldn't find it mentioned in System Information. But I'd like to know for sure before I fork out £30 for a USB adapter, which is what I'm told I'll need if there is no RS232 port. It's needed for a programme called DesignaKnit 7 - details of which can be found at http://www.softbyte.co.uk/dk7.htm, if anyone is interested. So, can anyone tell me how to find out for certain whether or not I have this port? Thanks v much, Helen

Answer:Do I have an RS232 serial port for cable link?

You do not have an RS-232 port on that laptop. Note that the site in question has specific recommendations for the RS-232 <-> USB link device, and I'd pick one of their recommendations: http://www.softbyte.co.uk/usb_conv.htm

There are several USB -> RS232 solutions available from different suppliers. You could also use an ExpressCard adapter on the system itself.

Need some advice a quick as possible.

Windows XP Pro
ofc had a built in serial port go bad, it was hooked to a charicter generator (don't no how to spell charicter) for a tv channel.
Installed a Controller Card with two serail ports PCI Multi I/O Controller Card, it didn't show up in the device manager was having problems getting the driver to work. says to load driver first then put in the pci card. Anyway it wouldn't work. The port that was built in (that went bad was on com 1) When the new card didn't work I used a usb with a serial adaptor and it went in fine and showed up in the divice manager and it said it was working and it started out on com 3, I no each time you plug the adaptor into a different usb port it goes to a different com port. That isn't a problem cause it would stay in the same port. Anyway device manager said it was working we changed the charicter generator to com 3 but it wouldn't work. We no the cables are good. I then got a PCI Card with one serial port instead of two and installed it and it show right up in the device manager and said it was working and I for get what comport it was on but changed it to com 1. that port didn't work either. Finally brought in another windows xp computer and hooked everhthing to it and it works. The xp computer I brought in had no serial port so used the same usb to serial adaptor that we had used and it work the first time. Show up in the device manager just like on the first comp... Hey guys, how are ya?

I just had one question. I have a firewire audio interface and it needs a 6pin to power the device. My laptop only had a 4 pin and I didn't want to use the power adapter as it was quite cumbersome.
I bought a compaq 2 port firewire card last night but it doesn't seem to provide power to the interface. Is it just this card? or would it be possible with any card bus to power up my interface?
thanks!

I have purchased a usb to serial adapter but the drivers are not functional.

Every time I plug the cable inside my computer i get a USB device not recognized message. Under device management > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Unknown Device.

The drivers that i have is called "PL-2303 Driver Installer". Even after installing this driver, I still have no luck. I know it is possible to update the driver but the driver format would have to be in a .INF file. In this case the driver is a .exe file so i have no idea what to do.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated also the drivers are available @ http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If the device is functional and installed, it should be under the COM ports in device manager but like i said before it is not and is listed as "Unknown Device".

I did a SEARCH for this issue and all I could find was a suggestion that the card in THAT thread wasn't compatible and they should try a different one. That is hardly helpful.

So if the card I have ISN'T compatible, what IS compatible?

I recently purchased a PCMCIA wireless card for my Satellite A300-177 laptop and when i went to fit it found out that they use the express card now.

Just wondering would this converter fit http://www.roalan.com/expresscard_to_pcmcia_cardbus.htm.
I know this might seem a bit obivous but with companies nowadays you never know if the conections are the same even though they share the same name.

Answer:How can I use PCMCIA card in Satellite A300-177?

Hello

Is your notebook delivered without WLAN card or you want to use faster WLAN card?

The adapter compatibility can confirm the manufacturer itself. They must offer specification for own product.

Anyway, I think your notebook has WLAN on board and I don't see the reason to have this big additional part. Sorry but it looks awesome for me. I can understand you must to have it because the notebook is without WLAN but .... I don't know.

Hi all,

I hope someone can help with this problem. I recently bought a PCMCIA card with additional USB ports for my Satellite L30-10y laptop. It runs on Vista basic, anyhow I pushed the card into the slot and let windows load the drivers, problem is it will not load them; I get an error message saying that the MDT-0002 device did not load.

Is this a Vista problem or Toshiba thing?
Thanks for any help on this one
Regards Ciaran

Answer:PCMCIA card will not install on Satellite L30-10y

Hi

I doubt that this could be a Toshiba issue.
I googled a little bit for this MDT-0002 device error and this error appears using some PCMCIA cards on different notebooks from different manufacturers running Vista OS.
Someone said that the Pcmcia.sys (PCMCIA driver) must be updated.

I would also recommend contacting the PCMCIA card manufacturer support to get more details about some issues with Vista OS.

Hello!

I have an old model of Satellite and I need to connect it with a machine that has old fashioned entrences, with pins (mother and father) and was told that I need a replicator (serial and paralell).

Now, I'm very confused because I'm not technical so please advise me on two things: is there something that does such thing? (usb to old fashion pins) and if there is I really need to buy it (so please pusrchase details).

Sorry if I've been so bad at describing what I need. I'm an electronist and am working with big machines therefore I need to connect my laptop to the machine;s software.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite M45-S169 PSM43U: need to connect to a serial & parallel port

Hmm?. The new-age generation notebooks don?t support the serial or parallel ports?
Therefore you?ve got not many possibilities to connect a older devices to a notebook which was not equipped with the serial or parallel port.

As far as I know there are some USB-to-serial or USB-to-parallel port adapters.

Google a little bit and I?m sure you will find some good offers.
But note; I read somewhere that not all adapters work properly? you will have to investigate a little bit.

Good luck

I'm planning to add a new USB PCI card to my 6 year old motherboard (ASUS A7N266-C...for the whole story see my recent thread "HELP - Should I mess with my old computer's BIOS?" here in the Hardware Forum).

I opened up the computer to check out the PCI slots on the motherboard, and it looks like the only room I've got is if I remove what I think is my Com1 or Com2 serial port.

My question is: Do I need a serial port on my computer? I'm not using it - not sure if I ever did. Plus, it looks like I have another (also unused) serial port in a bit higher up.

See the 4 attached photos for a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Please excuse my ignorance about these things - Any opinions?

Answer:Can I remove my Serial Port to make room for a PCI Card?

Well it does look like a serial port. However, I think that you have a Creative sound card in your system and they were supplied with an add-on card for use with game controller (which I think this is). Look in device manager under Sound and see if you have an entry called 'Game Port'.

In theory removing the existing hw ie the add-on card is not likely to be problematic. Installing the USB add-on card may cause IRQ issues. Depends on whether slot 3 shares it's IRQ eg with any other slot.

Why not also consider an external powered usb hub as a possible alternative.

Good Luck

PS. I also just noticed that you have 2 other pci cards that you may well consider as candidates for removal. A modem and what appears to be a pci card with firewire ports (which appear to be unused).

PPS. Also noticed that if you remove the add-on card to which you refer, then you will be using pci slot 1 (adjacent to the vga card). Slot 1 invariably shares an IRQ with the vga slot so in this case I think installing a usb add-on card will create issues. Heat issues may also be another side effect even if your usb add-on card did work.

OK i have a problem with my Satellite Pro A120's (xp service pack 2) cardbus.

I use the cardbus slot to add firewire conections via a IEEE 1394 cardbus card and have been doing this a long time. The other night my comp went into hibernate with the card still in the slot and still in use and when i tried to use it the next day the card was not working at all.
So i thought the had died on me and brought another one, this one to be exact [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839314003] .

When i plug the new card into the slot windows starts the installation add new hardware thing but does not find the driver, there is none on the provided CD and it does not conect to windows update to find one ethier. So the new card does not work and does not get installed, it just shows up with ! next to pci device.

I have looked everywhere on the internet to find the driver, read the manual etc.I even did a fresh install of windows so it might find the drivers but nope.
The only thing i can think of is the slot does not except 32 bit cardbus but in my manual it says this:

"The computer is equipted with a pc card slot that can accomedate a type II card. Any pc card that meets industry standards can be installed. The slot supports 16 bit pc cards, including pc cards 16 multifunction card and cardbus pc cards. Cardbus supports a new standard of 32 bit pc cards."

Any help please

Thanks

Hi guys. One question.

In a Toshiba Satellite M40X-105 which has a Type II pcmcia card slot, will this wireless card ZYXEL Wireless Lan Card G-170S 802.11g CardBus, work? CardBus card is only compatible with type II 32bit card slots right?

Does the laptop have a 32 or 16 bit card? Thanks

Answer:Satellite M40x-105 - PCMCIA wireless LAN card

Hey,

Generally speaking I don?t see a reason why it should not work? PCMCIA slot = PC card slot.
Only express cards don?t work because express card is the successor of PCMCIA.

Alternative you can buy an USB stick with WLAN functionality if you prefer this way. ;)

Answer:Satellite 3000-504: PCMCIA card does not work

Hi,

did you installed all chipset drivers properly? Usually the PCMCIA bridge gets it driver automatically from windows, but I guess that there mut be some additional drivers be installed.
Check the [Drivers Download site|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp]
from the Toshiba website and check for some driver updates or drivers you don?t have installed.

Another good idea would be to update your BIOS if not already did and set everything to default. Maybe theres just some false setting..

Would appreciate to hear some feedback from you regarding your problem...

In the configuration area you can set the option ?device config? to ALL Devices.
Furthermore in the area ?PC card? you can try to change the option to PCIC compatible or CardBus/ 16-bit.

Play around with these settings and check if one of this will enable the card.

Hello

What have I to do ? the computer is dating from 2003
Furthermore, would you please be kind enough to tell me where I can buy PCMCIA card for this kind of equipment ?
Thank you very much for your help

Monique

Answer:PCMCIA card for Satellite 1730CDT needed

Hi

According to this page the Toshiba Satellite 1730CDTsupports the PC Card Slots: 2 Type II or 1 Type III CardBus PC Card slots
http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=223&product=1552

I recommend searching in internet for some online stores which provide a PCMCIA card Type II (16bit) or Type III CardBus PC Card (32bit).

According to your USB issue:
I recommend reinstalling the chipset driver for this notebook.
The chipset controls the USB ports so usually the driver installation should help.

My new card is not working. The CD that came with it doesn't even recognize my new PCI card. It's a DVI, and I have a DVI dual to VGA piece where it can turn the DVI output into VGA. I thought perhaps it had arrived DOA from e-bay, until....I went into Device Manager. Problem is, in my Windows 7 Device Manager, under OTHER DEVICES? My PCI Serial Port has a yellow question mark next to it. I learned from Windows XP that this means there's a problem with my component. Hence my new card won't work until my PCI Serial Port is straightened out. I've tried to click on it and update it, but when I do that, Windows 7 says UPDATING...and then it says DEVICE did not update successfully. So it seems this is something I can't do through Windows update, or something Windows update won't do itself. Anyone else had this issue? Seems to be driver related.

I wasn't sure where to put this.

The MB (Foxconn N570SM2AA0) already has a serial port built in. I was having issues with the XP driver (nothing else available), so I purchased a PCIe serial port card and installed it. I did disable the on board port first.

I have two bootable drives and this happens with the orginal drive and the 2nd drive that I reloaded the O/S after I added the card. The O/S hangs 45 seconds, then continues to boot. I'm sure it's this serial card. Again this is with or w/o the driver installed running XP Pro w/sp2

The other possible related issue is com ports 1 & 2 are not available with the on board port disabled. Where in the registry can I regain these port numbers?

Hope this made sense.

Answer:Hangs durning booting w/ additional serial port card

Do this:
1)Press [Windows][Break] to open the System Properties dialog box.

2)On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section.

3)In the Startup And Recovery dialog box, select the Edit button in the System Startup section.

4)The Boot.ini file will open in Notepad; locate the line that ends with the /fastdetect switch.

5)Position your cursor right after the parameter, press the spacebar, and add the /SOS switch.

6)Save the Boot.ini file, and close Notepad.

7)Click Cancel to close both the Startup And Recovery dialog box and the System Properties dialog box.

8)Restart the system.

When the system restarts, the splash screen will no longer appear. You can observe some of the operations that Windows XP performs during the startup stage.

To revive the splash screen, simply repeat the above steps to edit the Boot.ini file and remove the /SOS switch.

I wasn't sure where to put this.

The MB (Foxconn N570SM2AA0 already has a serial port built in.

Ok, I uninstalled the drivers, removed the card then rebooted. No change.
I disabled the 2nd SATA channels and the ethernet and firewire ports and still no change.

It still hangs on the "Windows is starting up" screen for 45 seconds.

Any ideas

I want to use UMTS on a Toshiba Stellite Pro 4600. I got a PCMCIA Card from Vodafone and installed with all updates.

But if I want to use UMTS and, that means start the application and connect to Vodafone, Windows shuts down with a Bluescreen:
DRIVER_IRQL_not_less_or_equal STOP 0x0...D1, 0x0...00, 0x0...02, 0x0...00, 0x0...00.

I think the IRQ allocation is not that good : http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/7151/toshibamw0.jpg

I have noticed that the Vodafone card causes the BSOD on some notebooks with P4 CPU?s and enabled hyper threading technology.

But there could be also a problem with the Vodafone card firmware.

Hello!

I am using the Toshiba Satellite Pro 4320 (SP 4320). With the very old (first) BIOS versions 1.0 the system worked well on LINUX (Ubuntu) and Windows XP. Then I found the BIOS update (last version on toshiba website). I made the update from BIOS version 1.0 to BIOS version 2.7.

Now, I can't use any PCMCIA-Card.
Everythings works fine, but I can't use the two PCMCIA-Slots.
Cards will be recognized but the system says there is a ressource-conflict.
The PCMCIA-Cards (WLAN/WiFi-adapter) was working fine with the old BIOS version 1.0, but now it doesn't work.

Windows XP says: "ressource conflict" and Ubuntu/Linux says after typing dmesg: "pccard gives bad answer, e.g.".

Please, help me!

Does anyone has got an older BIOS version?
My idea is, to "downgrade" the BIOS back to BIOS version 1.0 or to version 1.x.

I have to downgrade the BIOS at least to 2.6.

bye,
Martin

Hi everyone,

I have 2 Satellite Pro 4340, running Win2K, SP4. I purchased a PCMCIA Networkcard 10/100MB from Ultron (more or less no name :-) )

When inserting the card, Win2k recognizes the card but when the I plug the Network cable to it, it doesn't recognise the connection. Cable is fine. It appears that there is no power on the PCMCIA card. I read in some forums there is a problem with the driver Topic100 Card Bus and the voltage. I can find that lots of people have the problem but no where to find the driver to fix the problem :-/ On the toshiba support site I could not find such a driver. A

nyone have an idea, or better a link where I can download this driver? Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance for your help support and replies.

If this card needs some driver you will not find it on notebook manufacturer download page. You must check card producer site.

Like you know in the world of computers there are defined different standards. Very often cheap products are not designed for those standards and you can have different problems. I recommend you to use high quality product.

Any ideas to fix it ?

Answer:Satellite A60 - BSOD when surfing with wireless PCMCIA card

Hi

I think this BSOD is related to software issue.
I mean the missing QFE or update could be responsible for this BSOD.

I assume you have installed your OS manually.
How about Toshiba recovery CD? It would be very interesting to know if the same happens with the OS from the Recovery CD.

As far as I can remember on the Recovery CD some QFEs are preinstalled which fixes some bugs. Possibly one or more fails on your OS.

I have a need for an RS232 port probably PCI, but I see such a wide diversity of prices. Which should I choose? Some have a UART and some do not. Do I need a UART? Thanks, Jim

P.S. I'll be using it with ham radio software called Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) and a ham radio transceiver Yaesu FT-950

Answer:Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

I have a CyberPower USB to RS232 adapter. From the research I have done this should create a Com Port in my "Device Manager" so that programs
are then able to use it. I have researched this specific device and there are apparently problems with how it works on WIndows 8.1 but I have not been able to find a solution. The driver for the device was installed by WIndows plug-and-play controls. It decided
that the "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" driver version 6.3.9600.16384 was appropriate, however there is no Com Port in the "Device Manager" and instead a "USB Input Device" appears corresponding to the adapter each time
it is plugged in. Under the "Devices and Printers" the "Unspecified" device "CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS" shows up.

When I attempt to use drivers from a different source (the manufacturer of the USB to RS232 adapter), the plug-and-play ignore the new drivers and use the ones from above.

How can I get the Com Port created so that I can use the adapter properly?

Is there a way to circumvent the plug-and-play and use the driver from the manufacturer?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS - not creating Com Port

Hi,
Regarding current situation, let?s try to manually install the driver by following these steps:

Device manager -> Right click the device and choose update driver -> Browser my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device driver? -> Have disk -> choose the driver manually to install.

Then let me know whether this device can work fine.

I've been given an A60 to upgrade for a friend and one of the things needed is a wireless card.

I got a 32bit cardbus card but when I insert it into the laptop nothing happens. XP doesn't recognise it, the lights oo the card don't come on.
First I thought it was a faulty card but I tried other cards and get the same results and I've reinstalled XP and all drivers but nothing.

I've seen other posts about changing the mode in the BIOS but there's no mention of the CardBus in the BIOS.
The laptop is using BIOS version 1.9. I just want to check is there something I'm missing or is the CardBus slot just not working?

Good morning. It is my first time on a forum, and my English is poor.
I have tried to install a PCMCIA card with 4 USB-2 ports (hw & sw) on my Satellite 2410-413 in order to use a DTV dongle (hw & sw).

It will not work: The ports seem to be declared all right in the computer but in effect, a simple 64 MB USB-2 memory key [a Sony "micro-vault" key), will not work, and neither will the Winfast DTV dongle.

Paradoxically, both the mem key will work on any of the three USB-1 ports, and the DV dongle will light up on any USB-1 port. The PCMCIA card with 4 USB-2 ports is new. I cannot locate the origin of the problem.

Would any one help me with this question?
Thank you in aadvance for your reply. Here is (maybe ?)
Another way of formulating the question: how are USB ports managed by the system?

Hello Rasta

Sorry but I think that this question should be the right one for PCMCIA producer. Try to visit their support page. Maybe you will find some answers.

I have a Satellite A100-259 which I've had for about a year without any problems.... until now, the PCMCIA Card slot reader appears to have stopped working.

When I insert a PCMCIA SD Card reader the laptop find the hardware as a "PCMCIA UNKNOWN_MANUFACTURE" and subsequently can't find any drivers for it. I have tried a couple of different PCMCIA devices and get the same issue each time, I've also double checked that the card reader works by trying it in the wife's non-Toshiba laptop.

The PC is a duel boot XP/Vista setup and I get the same issue under each operating system. I also think that this may have started after I installed the BIOS update to 2.20.

Any suggestions would b greatly appreciated,
Regards.

Answer:Satellite A100-259 and PCMCIA Card Reader stopped working

Try to access the BIOS and set it to the default settings.
Don?t forget to save the settings after the change.

By the way; do you try to reinstall the PCMCIA driver?
Access the device manager and remove the PCMCIA slot from the system.
Then reboot the notebook and check if the Windows recognizes and installs the removed slot.

Good luck

I just recently purchased the Belkin PCMCIA USB card FSU222 card to upgrade my 1900-303 to USB 2.0, as I have an external USB 2.0 DVD/RW drive. I am running XP pro SP2, I plugged in the card and install it without any errors, and when I plug in the Dvd/Rw drive, it installs without any problems.

The DVD burner reads DVDs with no problem and very fast, but when I insert a blank DVD to record, the drive reacts really slow. I let it sit there for 150 min and no progress and my pc freezes. With my web cam plugged in to the card, it?s even worst! It freezes my pc immediately! I downloaded the most recent driver from the Belkin website but problem is still not resolved.

I read in other forums, people with same problem as me! Is anyone with problems here? Is there a more compatible card to upgrade my pc?

Many thanks

Answer:PCMCIA USB card doesnít work properly with Satellite 1900-303

Hello

It is really not easy to say what the problem is but I assume that there is some problem with PCI-Cardbus. In my opinion ypou can try to make a BIOS update or even try to check if chip set utility update is available for your unit.

One guy at other forum recommends using a small tool called ?chipinfodemo1.1.5?. This tool allows cardbus identification and you can try to reinstall the cardbus controller driver.

Sorry but I have no other idea.

Does this notebook support USB2.0?
How can i make it work?

Answer:Satellite 105-S157: USB2.0 via PCMCIA card doesn't work

Hi

This is a very new Toshiba model and I assume it supports the high speed USB 2.0.
Sometimes the OS cannot recognize the external USB devices because of the power limitation. The fact is that the USB port provides the 500mA. This is a standard value.
If the USB device need more power the OS cannot recognize and enabled the device.
In this case the external power supply is necessary. Other possibility is to use the USB hub with a external power supply.

This morning my Satellite Pro A40 (Celeron 2.6) fell down some 40 cm. It fell down right on the WLAN card that was inserted. That card is still alive and so is the rest of the laptop, but the PCMCIA slot is kind of damaged. I can insert PC Cards almost completely, just the last bit (where the pins are) doesn't go.

I removed the cover near the CPU and there I could see the PCMCIA-slot from the inside; I could see the main part and the last part where the pins are. That little part is like pushed upwards, as you can see on the pics.

I think I'd be able to fix that PCMCIA slot myself, but I can't remove it. I've removed all screws on the back plate, but it is still stuck.

Pics:

PCMCIA slot

The PCMCIA slot; on the left you see the part with the pins, which is pushed upwards. That's also what I see when I look at the pins through the PCMCIA slot; they are like pushed down, but I don't think they are bent.

Does anyone have an idea how I can remove the back plate, or another way to remove the PCMCIA slot and fix it?

On a box running Server 2003 the application needs to talk out a serial port to an OPTO-22 I/O system. The Optoscan program from the manufacturer works just fine. Portmon is a utility that should be able to tell you the name of the process that is accessing the port: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/portmon.mspx

I use it at work as a RS-232/RS-422 protocol analyzer.

This sounds like a problem with the PCMCIA (pc card) drivers.
They are not assigning the correct system resources to the card to make it work.

Try deleting them and let the system reload them next boot. Try to install the newest PCMCIA driver.

The machine works perfectly in every respect. Recently tried to add a wireless Avaya Silver card to the system.

Somehow the system has issues with the driver provided. I redownloaded the driver from the support site (now on version 7.62, the driver should support the card as a "Avaya Wireless PC Card".) I therefore do have the latest driver available.

Since the machine runs Windows 2000, with SP4 and all the fixes available, and I have not yet had issues on installing a card such as this on a Windows 2000 machine before, I'm a bit confused about what may be causing the issue.

The card is detected properly, and the driver is recognized. When installed the device manager keeps depicting a yellow exclamation mark on the Avaya card. When investigating this the error depicts that Windows 2000 cannot load the drivers on an error code 31.

I've found that Code 31 refers to possible support hardware that's giving issues. So I turned my attention to the CardBus controller (ToPIC100 according to the device manager). The version used is Microsoft, 06/20/2003, 5.00.2195.6717.

Appearantly there is a newer driver (5.1.2600.0) but I've not been successful in getting that one downloaded. Seems it's only available through Windows Update, which doesn't show the update as being available for the machine.

So... Anyone know how to get the Avaya Silver Wireless PCMCIA card active on a Satellite Pro 4320? Would I need a newer driver, or can't it be done at all?

Hello Neko

I can not give you exact explanation what you can do but in my opinion everything you done was right. The only thing that may be is that you must install the driver at first and then put the card in PCMCIA slot. If there is any possibility check the installations order.

A system we use at work requires us to run gps's to serial ports. On occasion, after rebooting, windows detects the activity on the serial port as a serial mouse....then all hell breaks loose with the mouse....it jumps all over the screen left and right clicking as it pleases! It's actually quit funny...

The way we handle this...is bye killing power to the gps....which instantly calms the pointer down....then going into device manager and disableing the phantom serial mouse. It works....but the problem allways pops up again sooner of later.

I doubt many have had experience with this, but can anyone think of a way to prevent it?

Thanks for the help.

Answer:gps detected as serial mouse on serial/comm port

Check the bios settings to make sure that the Com Port is not set to WAKE-On setting, along with the fact that the serial port is set at Com2.

It also sounds like the Com Port setting in WinXP is set wrong for the Serial port, which I would check.

I have several laptops without legacy RS232 Serial connectors. I have bought 2 different USB to RS232 cables but I cannot make them work (XP reports them installed and enabled but the Serial device on the end of the cable isn't recognised).I have Siemens and Nokia phone that connect via their respective cables and they seem to use the same driver as the USB/RS232 cable (Prolific Serial Device). I can only make the Siemens SF65 work and have to connect the Nokia via IR.I'm assuming each device is trying to claim preference over the Prolific driver and the Siemens is winning! However is their any way I can make the other devices work? I've tried connecting each to different USB ports (directly and via a hub) and installing the driver each time but that doesn't work either.Any ideas what I do next?

Answer:USB to Serial / PCMCIA to Serial

I've taken the plunge and reinstalled XP Pro and SP2 on one of my laptops. Then I installed the Prolific Serial Cable Driver before anything else. The RS232 to USB cable now works! However I now have to have a laptop for each USB RS232 device! I will load the rest of my usual software (less any other known user of the same driver) and see how I get on. I'm currently downloading an enormous number of XP updates (40 at the last count)!

This is a technical limitation and the PS/2 Mouse port, PS/2 Keyboard port, Serial port, i-Link port (Firewire), and DVI port will not be supported when Portege M200 is docked on the Advanced Port Replicator III. :(

have a laptop w/ Vista with no serial port. Purchased a USB to serial adaptor and that works just fine but I have an application that has to be configured to a particular serial port and if you unplug the device and plug it back in or turn off and turn back on after setting the particular port, Vista (and maybe XP as well?) assigns the ports and it is not always the same com port. I then either have to go in through device manager or the application software to change COM port setting.

Is there a way to configure Vista to always assign a port to a particular device?

Hello

Do you have some problem with notebook functionality?
Are all ports working well?

Have you installed driver given on driver disk? If I understood it right you need this driver for virtual COM port creation.

Bu the way: which notebook model do you have?

Question: PCMCIA Port

I have problems when I try to insert an NETGEAR Wireless PC Card onto PCMCIA port. This only goes a 30% long inside. Someone knows the solution for this problem?

Answer:PCMCIA Port

Chances are you have an Express Card slot not a PCMCIA slot. If that is tru,  PCMCIA cards will never fit.  Terry

Hi, I am about to purchase a desktop from a well known store...hopefully all boxed up and sealed. My problem is, i currently have a laptop and access the internet through a mobile datacard via the pcmcia slot. Seeing as the desktop will not have one of these ports, is is possibly to buy some sort of adaptor, eg usb, to provide the pcmcia port? I know they can be fitted internally but dont really want people messing about with it.....Thanks.

Answer:desktop and pcmcia port

Assuming your using something like a Vodafone 3G card this is an expensive way to connect to the Internet.Your new desktop is almost certain to have USB and Ethernet ports, It would be much cheaper to access broadband with one of the many ISPs offering deals.ISP review click here

Hi there!

I need a USB port to attach a web cam - don't have one
The machine runs Windows98SE.

When I started surfing for info ... I ran into some selection choices that I have no knowlwedge of:

I don't know what PCI or PCMCIA means

I don't know whether I need USB version 1.0 or 2.0

Can you help me with this?

... also any suggestions on brand?

many many thanks
cheers
Louise

Answer:USB Port for webcam - what do I need PCI or PCMCIA

You need the PCI card for desktop, PCMCIA for a laptop.

Get 2.0, it's backward compatible........if you get 1.0 and end up with 2.0 devices, they will go at the slower speed.

As for brands, I would think they are pretty much equal....shop for price.....

After reinstalling the XP operating system on my T42p, I ran the automatic driver installer. I stick my wireless pcmcia card in the slot and it doesn't work (the internal wireless card bit the dust a few months ago). When I look at the Device Manager, under PCMCIA Adapters, it shows two "Texas Instruments PCI-4250 Cardbus" controllers. I don't know if I trust the automatic installer that Lenovo is providing! Does anyone know if the TI adapters are the right ones? I don't remember seeing that adapter in previous instances of my Windows installation; but then again I didn't have problems with the slot before. Thanks in advance for any assistance on how to get some wireless functionality.

Answer:pcmcia port problem

You can try removing the devices from device manager, then letting windows scan for new hardware. They should work with windows default drivers, but I've never seen lenovo system update install the wrong driver for such a basic pc part, so I suspect something else is up here. Perhaps the problem you were attempting to fix with the reinstall of windows was hardware based? (speculation). What I can do, if it would help is send you an Intel Pro wifi ag card, a genuine Lenovo so it won't be rejected by your bios. I can't promise you it will fix your problem, but if your system board is good and your current wifi card is bad, then it will work. I have several of them and $5 plus the cost of postage would be all I'd ask for, if you want to try it, or if you want to continue to get your PCcard (new name given to pcmcia) to work, try as I suggested and report. Some other regular members should be by soon to offer suggestions too.

Hello all,

Now you are all going to laugh at this but I own a very crusty Toshiba Tecra 720 CDT laptop running windows 98 OS. to do the business accounts etc but I am paying for a seperate ISP connection for it.

I recently setup a wireless network around my house and a friend gave me a wireless Adapter for the PCMCIA port. I installed the software for the hardware as per instruction and inserted the card into one of the PCMCIA ports however in control panel and the PCMCIA utility both ports are reading "empty" ie not detecting the card.

I have gone through all the usuals like running Add new Hardware etc etc and it refuses the drivers manually.

But it is like my PCMCIA port is not enabled or broken. I have never used it until now.

I took the wireless adapter to a friends house to run on his laptop which runs XP and XP detected it no problems. The card says it is able to run with windows 98 etc but being a newbie to all of this stuff I am not really sure what to do next as their obviously isnt a problem with the card adapter itself.

Can anyone help me out here?

Would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Answer:My antique Tecra PCMCIA port

Hi,

at first you shold check your BIOS settings. There is the possibility to change the settings of the PCMCIA slots.

There you can change it from PC-CARD (16BIT) to CARDBUS (32Bit).

Your wireless card is a 32 Bit Cardbus PCMCIA Card.

If you have changed it, the card should be detected and the suitable W98 drivers can be installed!

Bye Bob

I have a Satellite Pro L300. It does not have a Firewire (iLINK) port, which I need to capture video footage from my Sony Handycam.

I am wanting to purchase a Firewire Express Card. Does anyone know what model is compatible with my laptop which is running on Windows Vista (and where I can purchase it)?

I did buy a Belkin Firewire Notebook Adaptor but it is not compatible with Windows Vista and it does not seem to fit. It appears to be too big for the express card slot.

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - Which express card with firewire port?

Hi

Usually all Express Cards should be compatible.
You should google for firewire EpressCard.
You will get more many hits...
I found also some nice offers on amazon page?

Hi all

I've got a Tecra at the moment, and have happily used a GPRS / WiFi card via PCMCIA for some time.

However, all of a sudden the status lights on the card itself have started going crazy. The device itself doesn't support much logging, but from what I determined the PCMCIA had become confused.

Specifically, it looks like the actual hardware needed to be reinstalled.

I have done a complete software reinstall for both the card and the O/S (WinXP) itself, but to no avail.

Whilst there are still a few devices left uninstalled by default, there is clearly an "unkown" PCMCIA there that requires drivers.

Any idea where I can get these? I can't find them on the main downloads page. This might be me looking with elbows or a case of rtfm, if so, my apologies.

Thanks in advance.
[email protected]

Answer:On my Tecra M PCMCIA Port is shown as 'unknown'

It would be useful to know what model of GPRS / Wifi PCMCIA card you are using and the name of the client software.

Having worked on a well-known UK mobile network connection utility, I can say that these devices can get tempermental, especially when another set of PCMCIA drivers has been installed before or since.

You seem to have tried the obvious course of action, so you may want to google around to see if anyone has had a similar experience and possible solution.

I have a Portege 3010CT that has a Port 24x PCMCIA CD-ROM. The old hard drive is toast and I have installed a new (completely blank) hard drive, onto which I am trying to install Windows 2000. I have updated the Bios to the latest available from Toshiba (8.00) and set the PC Card Controller Mode to PCIC Compatible.

I have created a diskette to boot with drivers for the CDROM from Targus.com(they handle old Port/Noteworthy peripherals) and I keep getting the following error:

PCCARD CDROM Driver 2.27 - (C) Archos 94-98
No Unit Found: driver dumped

A:\>A:\mscdex /D:MSCD001
Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'.
No Valid CDROM device drivers selected.

The CD-ROM has power, the light is on, the cd spins, and the cd tray opens when the button is pushed. Any suggestions?? Or if it is easier, is there a way to create a boot disk to allow me to connect to our network, so I can access the CD-ROM from a share? Thanks.

Hi Everybody,
I've used a Satellite P200 laptop for about 6 years with Vista o.s.
I recently installed Windows 8 with reasonal good result.
Only the Card Reader port doesn't work.
It seems to be "dead"; even the indicator doesn't light up when an SD-card is placed in the port.

I suppose the Card Reader Controller is disappeared,
however, I don't now the name for it and, if needed, where I can find it.
Please help me. Thank you.
Tristan Koomen.

Answer:Satellite P200 - Card Reader port dead after Win 8 installation

I don?t think that port is death. It is just unusable due to missing driver.
>... however, I don't now the name for it and, if needed, where I can find it.
Drivers for Win8 nowhere. Do you really believe that Toshiba or any other notebook manufacturer will offer Win8 support for 6 years old machine? Definitely not.

All you can try now is to install driver offered for Win7 and hope this will help. If not I presume you can live with it.
> I recently installed Windows 8 with reasonal good result.
That?s good thing so be happy that Win8 runs good on this old machine.

Hi,

I am probably going to buy a second hand laptop for my student daughter and an ex-company Toshiba, which we found via a friend, seems like a good prospect.

I don't have full system specs but I believe it will come with 98SE, Intel CPU of unknown speed, possibly 550Mhz, 64MB RAM and 5.5 GB HDD, enough for her word processing needs (we have a legitimate copy of Word) but not good enough for her to play 'Pride and Prejudice' on DVD!

I understand that this is a discontinued model from 2000 or earlier so we may have trouble with spares etc. but the risk seems worth taking to save her a very long walk from her rented house to her university's nearest computer room. It won't be used online so I don't have to worry about security, except for infected floppies, so what I am interested in is the experiences anyone has had with Toshiba laptops in general and the 4200 series in particular.

I would particularly like to know if anyone has the 444KB Pdf user manual, (which is no longer available on the Toshiba site) and if anyone knows for definite if it is possible to connect a mouse to this model. TIA.
