Portege M800 - BIOS Update stucks - Windows 7 32bit

Question: Portege M800 - BIOS Update stucks - Windows 7 32bit

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem.
I downloaded the BIOS Update from the Toshiba Hompage.

The update started correctly, but at the point "Flash new BIOS" at "Processing block 26 of 33" the update stucks!
I'm waiting since almost 2 hours, but nothing happens.
My screen freezes, I can't move the cursor, the clock shows the same time.... so nothing happens...

Is that normal?
I don't think so, but it's my first BIOS-update, hence I'm not really familiar with it...

Does anyone has an idea?

It would be great to get some help!
Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

This is different not a common BIOS update process?
The BIOS update should not take a long time.

In your case is it possible that something went wrong during the flashing process and the ROM module has not been flashed properly.
I think you are in trouble and in my opinion only the ASP technician would be able to help you.

The BIOS ROM must be flashed again using an crisis procedure and this can be done only by an ASP technician.

Hello

I have an old M800-106 (model PPM81E-00K00JEN). It is good condition and has been reliable, and I don't want to scrap it. Unfortunately the Windows based BIOS update from Toshiba's website froze during it's operation, and now the laptop won't restart.

The cost of sending it to an authorised service provider to repair is significantly more than the cost of replacing the laptop, and I'd be charged even if they didn't fix it. I'm not saying it's expensive - if someone has skills and does some work they should be paid for it, but it's not what I want to spend money on for this laptop.

Environmentally it'd bad to just chuck the laptop away/take to the recycling centre.

I could strip the motherboard out and send that away to have the BIOS chip replaced or reprogrammed, but that would be time consuming and risk me damaging it.

I would like to attempt to flash the BIOS chip, using the crisis Phoenix tools that are available online, but so far haven't found a *.rom or *.wph file to use.

Where can I get the BIOS file - to be honest any version that suits this laptop would do, it doesn't need to be the most recent one.

Any helpful advice gratefully received.

Matthew

After BIOS upgrade to V4.00 LED illuminations keeps turning on during Vista booting even if LED illumination is set to DISABLED.
BIOS V1.40 worked as expected.

How to turn off LED illumination on M800 in Vista with BIOS V4.00?

Answer:Portege M800, Vista, BIOS 4.00, Cannot turn off LED illumination

The illumination can be disabled in BIOS and in HWSetup installed on your system.
If you would turn off the illumination in BIOS you should not forget to save up the changes before you would leave the BIOS settings.

Hi,

I encountered some problem with my netbook (Portege M800-10W) after updating BIOS.
The BIOS updating program seems to failed. Then my Netbook automatically restarted and now I can't start my PC anymore.
All the LEDs turns on, but the sreen remain black and after few minutes, the netbook beep 3 times (1 long, 2 short).

How can I restore the BIOS to the previous version (or factory version) ?

Thanks.

Answer:Portege M800 doesn't startup anymore after updating BIOS

I think that error code means there is a Graphical/Video problem. The Mainboard or VGA Board may need replacing, or there may be a loose connection.

I would send the notebook to an ASP for repair.

hi,

does anyone know the difference between M800-105 and M800-107?

Answer:Re: Difference between Portege M800-105 and M800-107

Hi

I don?t think that there is a big difference between both notebooks series.
The M800-105 was delivered in Germany and the M800-107 was delivered in other countries?

I think this is the main difference ;)

I am in receipt of a brand new *Toshiba Portege M800-100 Notebook*, Netherland model, but
I made a mistake when I started using and I need Your help, assistance what to do.

*1) *I just powered the Notebook and switched that on at first, without reading any instruction,
and it started to load Windows Vista, but when selecting English language without accepting that,
without pushing OK I was offered to cancel the installation. I decided to stop the installation
and looking after the User Manual. So I pushed "Cancel" and the offered "Power off". The Notebook powered off regularly.

*2) *Then I read in manuals:
*"After you turn on the power for the first time, do not turn it off until you have set up
the operating system."*

*3)* *But I did it as it was offered by the program, so that instruction was late to me.*

*4)* Pls. advice what to do, how to continue not to loose the Windows Vista, what I need
in English (I am foreigner) not in Dutch or French languages.

*5) *I have not powered the Notebook again, and waiting, expecting your instruction
what to do.

Answer:Portege M800 - I canceled the Windows installation

In your case I would start the notebook and see what it does. Maybe the installation starts again but I?m not sure. I never did this.

In worst case you must order a recovery disk from Toshiba directly or from an authorized service provider.
But try first what the notebook does.

Hi - I have the 2-disc Toshiba Windows 7 upgrade but there is no option in the installation process to select 64 bit (I currently have a 32 bit Vista Home premium on there)

I have a Portege M800-11J - which says it supports 64 bit

Any clues on how i can change this?

Answer:Portege M800 - How to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit?

Hi

Sounds like that you didn?t understand how the upgrade works.

You can?t make an upgraded from every version. For example you can?t upgrade a 32bit version of Windows to a 64bit version or upgrade from a higher edition of Windows to a lower edition.

So that means you can only make the upgrade to 32bit Windows 7. For Windows 7 64bit you have to make new installation.

Hi - I was wondering if there were any potential problems installing windows 7? I have just bought an m800 but I want to get rid of VIsta

Also can I use hardware virtualization on this machine? I need XPmode

Thanks

Answer:Installing Windows 7 Beta on Portege M800

as I can see virtualization is theme of your second posting so we can discuss about it there.

Back to Win7. Potential problems? Strange question. You know that Win7 is still not released and Toshiba didn?t start official support for it. That means there is no driver or Toshiba specific tool available for download. You can try to install some Vista stuff but mostly it will not work.

So, you can install it and see how it looks like but you will never be able to have full installed OS with all necessary components like drivers, tools and utilities.

The choice is yours. ;)

After my A100 finally broke i wanted to buy a new notebook (Portege M800). But unfortunately it is bundled with Windows Vista and some other software i do not have any use for.

As i read the licence agreement i could not agree to all conditions of it. Somewhere in the EULA there's a statement that asks me to return the licence to the dealer or manufacturer for a refund if i am not willing to sign it.

The retailer i bought this notebook from would only accept the licence plus the notebook which is unacceptable to me.
Is there a programme that enables me to buy this notebook without bundled software?
I mean this right is granted by local laws and in addition to that bundling software to a hardware device is illegal in my country.

So where can i get the promised refund?

Answer:Portege M800 - Windows Vista licence refund but how?

Hi buddy

Reading this message I had to grin a little bit? :)
The notebook comes with preinstalled Microsoft Windows OS? I think it?s Vista?

This OS is bundled with the notebook.
Of course you can install an other OS if you want? you have to buy it and can install it?
But I don?t believe you will get any Vista licence refund from anybody if you don?t want to use it?

I never heard about such thing and never met anyone who got such licence refund?

Hello,

i have notebook M800-10V protege who was under vista. I've purchase an upgrade windows seven for my m800.
first : how to re-install the tool toshiba recovery creator for backup it ?

2nd: the toshiba recovery partition is stay hide, but i don't know how or where is the luncher of this function ?

Answer:Portege M800-10V - Recovery creator after Windows 7 upgrade

Hello

The recovery disk creator can only be used on preinstalled operating system, in your case Windows Vista. After upgrade to Windows 7 you can?t use it anymore.

With other words recovery disk contains only Vista and you can create a new one with Windows 7. After using recovery disk you have to Windows 7 upgrade disk too.

I've tried all the drivers I've managed to find but no luck.

Is there anyone out there with the solution?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Portege M800 - Microphone doesn't work after upgrade to Windows 7

Just few questions:
Have you upgraded original Vista version hat you got with your notebook or you have installed clean Win7 version?
Are all hardware components properly installed and listed in device manager?
How do you test mic functionality?
Is Microphone listed in sound properties > Recording devices?
Is mic set as default device?

Hi,
I upgraded my *portege M800* bought in *Canada* to *Windows 7 64 bit*.
Everything is right excepted the keyboard. it's a canadian bilingual keyboard with 86 keys with 13 function keys and a console buttons with 6 keys(mute, cd/dvd, play, stop, previous, next).
I didn't update any drivers because it works fine with Windows 7 drivers.

The problem is:
- the hot keys (Fn + ..) don't work anymore
- the console buttons with the 6 keys (play, pause, etc) don't work anymore

What I did:
- checked the driver of the keyboard in the device manager: its a microsoft driver
- tried to update it with a toshiba driver but *I didn't find it in the driver list for windows 7 or vista on the toshiba website*: [http://support.toshiba-tie.co.jp/windows7/download/PORTEGE_M800_64_cae.htm]

So, I don't know if it's a driver problem or anything else???

Regards

Answer:Portege M800 - After Windows 7 upgrade the FN keys don't work anymore

Hey,

These special functions of FN keys and multimedia buttons have nothing to do with the keyboard driver. Furthermore for the keyboard there is no driver update. There is only the Windows standard driver that can be used.

The point is that you need Toshiba Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility. If you have bought the M800 in Canada, I assume it?s a Canadian model and therefore you can download all drivers here:

Hi A customer of ours is attempting to update the BIOS as a step in a SCCM 2012 task sequence. They are using the /sccm switch to suppress the automatic reboot after the BIOS update utility is executed as the SCCM task sequence will not continue after an unscheduled reboot. The BIOS Update utility used in conjonction with the /sccm switch requires a shutdown (not a restart) to complete the BIOS reflash and SCCM 2012 does not support shutdown in the middle of a task sequence. Does anyone know how a BIOS update can be achieved within a task sequence? Thanks Christian

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

Hi,

I recently picked up a Portege M200 and installed (via PXE - network install) Windows 7 on it. I would like to upgrade the BIOS as it's still at the original BIOS (1.1). I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install via Windows but it says my OS isn't supported. I don't have an external CD drive or FDD - how can I update the BIOS? I tried to put it on a USB drive but there doesn't seem to be an option to boot from USB.

Thanks!

Ok, I'm thinking I could use an SD card but I see it's not recognized by Windows 7 and when I put in a card, nothing happens...

Anyone know where I can find a driver for it? I do see there are 2 devices not recognized - one "Base System Device" and one "Unknown Device"...

And I see it doesn't recognize the video card either - just uses Standard VGA Graphics Adapter which seems to work fine...

Hello forum,

I recently upgraded my HP a6019h desktop from Vista 32bit to Windows 7 32bit. I've since had issues with both stuttering in my sound and a noticeable lag in my mouse movements. I read through some other forums and found that a possible reason is because my mobo's (ECS 945GCT-HM) bios is not up-to-date. I went to HP's website and found the bios update but I believe it will only run if it's in Vista. I tried installing it several times and it states that my computer does not meet the minimum requirements error 9998. I have looked everywhere for a compatible update and have not found one. If anyone can tell me how to install this update, knows of where to find a Windows 7 compatible update, or even maybe knows how to resolve my stuttering sound and lagging mouse issue please let me know. Thanks.

P.S. - I have the latest Realtek drivers and DirectX drivers.

Answer:945GCT-HM bios update needed compatible with Windows 7 32bit

DirectX is Microsoft - DX11 would have been installed with Windows 7.

Hi

The SATA drivers are placed in the Intel Matrix Storage Manager package.
The packages can be downloaded from here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/download.aspx?url=/17061/eng/f6flpy3286.zip&DwnldId=17061&ProductID=2101&lang=e ng

Download it and you could include the SATA files using the nLite.

Hi All :)

First of all, I will post my system information
Portege' M800-108 Windows Vista 32bit Service Pack1, with all the latest updates
DLink DSL G624T router no DHCP

I had my laptop connected to my router this morning with LAN cable, and all was working fine. When I returned home, I connected the laptop to the router and the LAN was not working. The LED on the router would light ON and then switch OFF, and then ON and OFF again, as if the PC is looking for a connection.
I used all the 4 ports available on the router, I used different cables, and the problem is still there.
The LAN driver is the latest available.
WLAN is working fine instead.

Any suggestion ? Is it an HW problem ?

Tnx a lot.

Answer:Portege M800-108 - LAN not working

You said that the LED?s would light on and then switch off, on and off, ?
Does this happen on all 4 ports?

Normally when this happens on a router or switch that means the router is faulty.
But you can try this:
Disconnect the AC/DC adapter from the router. Wait at least 1-2 minutes and then plug it on again.
Maybe the router works properly and if not, you should change it.

I got a Toshiba Portege M800 notebook about a year ago. Everything works great but I encountered this issue about a month ago.
Each time I start my PC, I push the power button, okay, it starts but about 3 or 4 seconds later, it automatically powers off and then restarts again and then loads Windows Vista without any problem. Toshiba has swap out the motherboard. It works about a week or so and then the Boot Twice loop starts again.

Anyone encounters this problem or any solution? If it's the motherboard's fault, why the new one still has the same problem?

Answer:Portege M800 – twice boot-up

> Toshiba has swap out the motherboard. It works about a week or so and then the Boot Twice loop starts again

According to this short info the issue didn?t appear after the motherboard replacement.
But it appeared again after a short time?
This would mean that the motherboard replacement has helped firstly but only for a short time) and the notebook didn?t boot up twice in a row.

I don?t know why it the issue appeared but I think you should contact the ASP in your country once again and should clarify this with the agents directly.

Cheers mate

I own a M800 Portege which runs on Vista. I got this 6 months ago. Everything works fine except today when I tried to play a DVD, it did not play. The driver just lighted and it sort of sounded that it was reading the disk but there was no message or anything that prompted me to play the DVD or explore or whatever. I tried an audio disk, the same thing happened, which is nothing.

Then I was surprised when I went to Computer, the DVD icon there was gone. Then I went to Device Manager, there was no DVD icon there. I checked the BIOS and there was nothing on the Optical Disk Drive. I tried to open the toshiba DVD-RAM Utility and an error box appears Device not recognised.

It just seems that the DVD drive just vanished. What is the problem?

Answer:Portege M800 DVD drive not found

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.

1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
4) Reboot.

If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).

This utility can remove the filters for you:

I bought a PORTEGE (M800-107) in 2009 and before the expiration of the 3-year-old-warranty (2012), the screen went black permanently .
I sent it to the official TOSHIBA service in Greece (called "IDEAL sa") who fixed it in about a month (and after two tries).
One and a half year later, the screen went black again. Now they ask from me 500 euros for the replacement of the monitor. Of course I'm not going to give all these money.
Portege was the 3rd Toshiba notebook I have used. I chose it because I wanted something powerful and professional. The irony is that the most expensive model went off earlier than the cheaper.
However, that was the LAST ONE from you.

PS: In order to take my notebook back (without fixing), I have to pay 30 euros, for the technicians' check!!!!!!!
Really, do you know anyone who goes to service for fun? Or am I responsible for your model's failure?

Answer:Defective screen on Portege M800

Hi

To be honest I?m really wondering you have this display problem. Portege and Tecra models are the best Toshiba business line notebooks and since years they are known as high quality products with best hardware.

Anyway, sometimes the best products have problems and make troubles. Similar things happen with all technical products. I know it is pretty pity and angry, especially in the moment when you need your notebook.

Maybe it sounds stupid now but maybe you can buy display on your own and find someone who can exchange it for you. I have done this for my friend few years ago. We bought display on eBay and we have exchanged it alone. Of course on our own risk.

Bye and good luck

Hi,

I experienced a usual crash of the Windows Vista on my Toshiba and had to shut down the computer through the power button on my keyboard since the Alt+Ctrl+Del function was not responding.
In the very first time I attempted to switch it back on, I got the usual message, warning me that the computer was not shut down properly. I chose to operate Windows in safe mode and shut it down properly.

However when I switched my laptop back on it does not respond to any commands at all. I can move my mouse on the screen but cannot do anything while on the windows environment..any ideas?

Answer:TouchPad overheat on Portege M800

Hello

You know that opinions are different and for me some issue can be normal but for you extreme negative or bad. Problem is that this small notebook has specific construction and I can imagine that the area around the touchpad is warm.

Do you use your notebook with docking station?
Do you use this notebook for ?every day? work like Internet, office or to run some complex graphic applications?

Anyway if you think it is not normal I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service. They can use diagnostic programs and check if there is some serious problem or not.

I think the DMI information needs updating. The service center should have done this when the mainboard was replaced, so take it back to them and ask them to update it.

Hi

I'm new here ...

Is it possible to upgrade to a larger internal hard drive for a Portege Tablet PC ?

I have 120 GB and it is nearly full and I have seen Western Digitals Scorpio 250 GB sata300 and also Toshiba's 320GB MK3252GSX ...

Any good ? Possible up grades ?

Another annoyance I'd like to sort at some stage is ... when I am merrily typing away ... for some reason the cursor has skipped to a different line on the page and I have been merrily typing away in the wrong place on the page ... any idea why my tablet pc does this ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi all,

Recently my girlfriend gave me her TOSHIBA M800 laptop. Enlighten me pls as to why I cannot find the model M800 in Toshiba's product support tab?

The models I see there are all 805-XXXXXX.

Is 800 supposed to mean 800 series and that in fact the laptop I am having now is one of those 805-XXXXXX?

I tried to see if any of those M805-XXXXXXX match the model number I see on my laptop but none of it matches. Mine is PPM81L.

I am just trying to find out if my laptop comes with bluetooth.

Appreciate your help on this.

Answer:Product support for Portege M800

I?m really surprised you cannot find it but I believe you search for it on wrong page. Portege 805 can be US notebook model but if you have European model use European support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

Hi,

Is it possible activate hardware virtualisation support on this notebook ?
I have latest bios (v4.80) and win7 64bit but i want use Windows XP mode fonction (virtual PC technologie)

Thanks for advance.

Answer:Portege M800-11R: Is Intel VT virtualisation possible?

Hi

Everything depends on the CPU.
If the CPU supports the VT and if the VT is enabled in BIOS then you could use it.

The M800-11R uses the Intel CORE2 DUO T6400 CPU.
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=40479&processor=T6400&spec-codes=SLGJ4

The Intel CORE2 DUO T6400 CPU does not support the VT and therefore you will not be able to use the VT,

Hy Guys!

Here is my Problem, or even a problem of a friend of mine...

My friend today bought a Toshiba Portege M800-116 - Model Nr.: PPM81E
She turned it on and forgot to plug it in, so during the installation of Vista it shut down and because she is a total noob on computer she took her recovery disk and installed XP. So the recovery image which should be on the HDD is gone...

Now i tried to install a Vista Ultimate x64 but i got a lot of problems with the drivers and i couldn't slove it yet. For example the display driver won't work and some others too. But i don't want her to use XP because it only can use 3 GB of RAM and she's got 4 GB...

So maybe u guys can help me? I don't know what to do. I try to find some solutions for my driver problems, but a recovery file for Vista also would be nice... Its Vista Buissnes which should have been installed. :)

I am from Austria if this matters. ;)

Greetings and thanks for your help.

Answer:Portege M800 - Can't recover Vista

Are you installing Vista 64bit drivers? Many 32bit drivers wont work.

I believe the PSU44E (Satellite U400) model is very similar, so try those drivers as well.

I've go Portege M800 from here in Australia, with Vista 32. I'm really getting sick of the Windows wireless software.

On my old (not Toshiba laptop) I used to use the Intel PROSET Wireless Utility. Is it possible to use this with my M800 laptop?
I tried download and installing something from the toshiba au site, called: SP300-IntelProset-120004-Vis32
However (for me) this only installs the following:
WiFi advanced statistics
WiFi manual diagnostics

No sign of the actual PROSET Wireless connection Utility from Intel.

Thanks

Answer:Portege M800 wireless question

hi ozidealists,
tried to change the wireless configuration from "use windows to configure" to "use provider"?
if you dont want to use Vista's Wireless "Zero Configuration Utility" then switch and (wireless properties if i am right) try using the Intel Utility.
i am only using xp so i cant provide you a step für step instructiion for vista.
try to update the driver sometimes this helps a lot.

Hello,

I'm french and i bought a laptop PORTEGE M800-11G with Vista Premium

I want uninstall a lot of applications, programs & windows features.

I post on this toshiba forum because i hope we can explain me what are these applications ; TRDCReminder & TRORDLauncher, both edited by TOSHIBA.

I prefer known before uninstall these applications.

Thanks for you help

Sorry for my very bad english,

kinds regards

Answer:Portege M800-11G: What is TRDCReminder & TRORDLauncher of Toshiba

Hi

I think the TRDCReminder stays for Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator Reminder and it reminds you to create the own recovery disk.
The TRORDLauncher is related to the Toshiba recovery disk creator too?.

However, both processes are developed by Toshiba and are needed or a part of for Toshiba Recovery disk creator.

Hi,

I messed up my original keyboard by flooding with water and then by hairdrying it to the point where a couple keys melted.
I know it is a stupid thing to do. But, what can I say ....

I attempted to ask an official technical center to fix it, only a few keys were not responding. Everything else works fine.
Without really looking in detail, they wanted to change the whole motherboard and a number of other parts for a price nearing that of the laptop itself.

So I bought a new keyboard on eBay. However, I am lacking instructions on how to replace it.
On the net, I found instructions for older Portege versions and couldn't find any for the M800.
Can anyone, please, help ?

Cheers,

/Numidic

Answer:Instructions on how to replace a keyboard on a Portege M800

Hi

I think you will not find detailed instructions how to disassemble a Portege M800. All what you can download is the user manual and technical manuals are not for public, I think they are only available for ASP?s.

Anyway, as far as I know you have to remove the keyboard holder and two screws they are securing the keyboard. Then you can remove it.

But to be honest I would recommend contacting a notebook technician for help. Notebook disassembling isn?t easy, it?s a little bit tricky and you have to remove a lot of screws. So you are on the safely side because M800 is pretty new notebook. ;)

I have a Portege M800 and the lights to the right of the power button will not turn off - even if the machine is completely shut down and power cable disconnected.

I have tried updating the VAP and BIOS by downloads and have used BIOS to switch off illumination LED and tried using Dimmer.EXe.

These have all switched off the Portege light itself and the light above the touchpad, but not the 6 lights to the right of the power button.

Can anybody help?

Thanks.

Answer:Re: Portege M800 - Lights wont turn off

Hi

First of all you have to ensure that latest BIOS is installed.
If you are using the latest BIOS then try this:

Please remove the battery and disconnect AC adaptor.
Then wait some time? two, three hours.
Then plug battery and AC adaptor again.

Check the BIOS settings (set it to default)
After that try to enable or disable the illumination again?

Hi all,
the LED Button, which does normally turn on/off LED Lights and LED Lights beside touchpad does not work anymore.
When pushing it flashes for about 1second and then turns off.
Thanx for replies

Answer:Portege M800 LED Button does not work anymore

May I ask you what operating system do you use?

As I?m not mistaken you mean the Toshiba Control button near the power button.
Am I right?

Depending on the M800 model you can use this button to mute the volume or to switch the illumination of the touchpad, brand logo and buttons on or off.

The M800 is not known to me but I know that some other notebook series supports an option in the BIOS called ?Illumination LED?. You can disable it and enable it.
Please enable it in the BIOS and save the settings.

Furthermore you should check the settings in the Toshiba Controls Utility. Maybe there is an option which could helps to control the button properties.

Last but not least a new driver reinstallation might solve this issue.

Hi all,

Hopefully someone here will be able to help me out with a problem. I have a brand new Portege M800-11J laptop and I am trying to use a 4GB SD card in the inbuilt reader. The laptop locks up and wont allow me to format the card or read it. If I use a USB reader it works with no problems.

I have read via Google that there can be problems with some readers and 4GB cards.

Anybody else have this problem or able to offer a solution? I have done the usual driver re-installs etc.

Thanks

Adam

Answer:SD card reader problems on Portege M800-11J

Is it an SD Card (FAT16)?

Or is it an SDHC Card (FAT 32)?

The M800 should be compatible with SDHC cards, so maybe its a driver conflict. Or maybe the pins inside the reader are damaged and causing a short.

Have you updated the BIOS?

I have recently upgraded to an Intel X25-M G2 Postville 80GB SSD and experience a 30 second lag between BIOS POST (screen turns black) and actual booting from the disk. Intel support says that it's probably a BIOS problem and that I should install the latest firmware, which I have done already (4.80).

System: Windows 7, Portege M800-127 M800-127 PPM81E.

Answer:Portege M800 - SSD, 30sec lag before boot after POST

Hi

I assume this lag will be caused due the BIOS test. After you power on your notebook it checks the internal devices like HDD/SSD, CD/DVD drive, CPU, RAM, etc. So one hardware part is causing this lag I think.

If the latest BIOS can?t solve your problem it would be interesting to know what happens with a replacement SSD. Can you check this, please?

Hi everyone,

I purchased a M800-105 and as with all laptops I bought I did a clean reinstall of the OS (in this case vista home premium) ... to my surprise there is only one driver listed when I search for vista driver fo the PPM81E model (the Bluetooth stack driver)

I downloaded the essential driver like display and Wi-Fi driver from intel.com but all the Toshiba features like FN keys, webcam, the touchpad buttons beside the power button ... etc. don?t work.

Will the driver be published for the device or is there a mirror/alternate link to the drivers?

Thanks

Answer:No Portege M800-105 (PPM81E) Vista drivers available

Portege M800 is, I believe, the newest Portege model and the drivers will be definitely offered. I think it is just a matter of time. Vista drivers are offered for all Vista preinstalled notebooks and the same will be with Portege M800.

But one thing confuses me: why you have installed your version of Vista if Portege M800 is already offered with Vista Home Premium? Have you created recovery DVD?

There you will find option ?Select your notebook model to view a list of compatible options and accessories.? Use it to find all available options for your Portege. Compatible batteries will be listed too.

Hi,

my laptop M800 always runs with fan at full speed, CPU usage runs between 50% to 100% even when no programs are running, is this normal?, seems the computer never seems to go to a resting or idle mode.

hope someone can help

Answer:Loud Portege M800 - CPU usage always at 50% or higher

Hi

Do you use your Portege with ?factory settings??

What you must do is to stop all useless processes that run in the background. This will reduce CPU usage.
By the way: change cooling method settings.
You can find it in advanced power plan settings > Toshiba Power saver > cooling method. Change it to battery optimized.
It will reduce cooling fan activity and notebook will run much quieter.

Test it please and post some feedback.

I get a "No Preview" when I first load it and "Graph Render Fail" when I go to video.

Please help me!

Answer:Portege M800 - Chicony Webcam won't work

Hi

>The only thing though is that I know the camera itself is fine because very rarely it will work on MSN messenger but it hasn't responded to any other program.

This means that more and different applications have an access to this cam. Is it right?
I think this is the issue!

In your case I recommend disabling the webcam software in msconfig -> ?StartUp? tab.
Furthermore you should disable the MSN also in msconfig. The point is that only one application which uses and shares the webcam should run in the OS background.
I think this would avoid any issues with another software?

Hello!

I have a Toshiba Portege Z930-D3S laptop. I wanted to run a system recovery and did everything exactly as in the manual http://forums.toshiba.com/tshb/attac.../1/Z930_EN.pdf page 4-24, Section System recovery Options. The tool told me that the recovery partition is empty (or something like this) and the recovery cannot be performed. I definitely did not erase it and do not how it can be. Then there was an option to erase sdd and I thought that this might help (don't ask me why) and that the tool would erase everything but the recovery partition. So, I chose it.

Now I have the frozen screen with "Toshiba Leading Innovation" and cannot enter any menu neither by pressing 0, nor by holding F8. I cannon restart the laptop, it seems that it simply fall asleep when I press the power button.

Please, help me to recover the system.

Hi,

I am using a Portege M800-116 running XP-SP3.

Problem 1:
Connecting Line-Out to a stereo and playing music w/ Winamp or WinMediaPlayer works fine on batteries.
As soon as I connect the power adapter, loud high frequency hiss and hum static disturbs the experience.

Problem 2:
Recording WAV or MP3 files with internal or external mic only produce mediocre results.
The resulting files include a high level of high frequency hiss and hum static.
Connecting power increases the problem.

Comparing playback and recording sound quality with my old trusted Portege M100:
My M800 is a not only low quality - it's plain unusable.

Problem 3:
Toshiba HWSetup does not start from Controlpanel.
Have tried un- and re-installing to no avail.

Thanks for guiding me towards a solution.

I have a Portege M800, Model PPM81C- 05C020.

My problem is that the light above my touchpad dims and then gradually goes off altogether. When this happens, I can't use the touchpad. Luckily I have an external mouse plugged in, but when the Synaptics mouse light goes off, it also slows down my computer. I'm typing this post very slowly and it still takes forever for the words on screen to catch up to what I'm typing. I've run various programs to make sure there are no registry errors, but they all come back clean.

I just got my Portege M800 weeks ago and frankly speaking, this model has been giving me much trouble. Earlier it is the heat problem at the palm rest and there is no solution to it.

Now I am facing another issue with the fingerprint login. I am running on WinXP. I set the system to be locked after 5 minutes idle. So normally after 5 minutes idle, the system will require me to scan my fingerprint to unlock the Windows. But there are times that, after scanning my fingerprint and successfully matched, the screen will just be blank (only showing the desktop wallpaper). No desktop icons, no windows task bar and nothing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del bring up nothing and no response even any key press. I tried to bring the system to hibernate by press the power button once also bring no response.

So I finally have to press and hold the power button to hard-reset the laptop.

Anybody can help or give any clue what was happening? Thanks!

I have a M800 connected to a Dynadock U docking station.
I have problems when i try and set my external monitor as the primary device and have have the laptop as the extended monitor.

I am running Windows XP.

The only options it will allow are: Clone, Extended (laptop is main and external is the extended option)

If i use the WIndows Graphic option it will not allow me to set the external monitor as the main display (i tick this option and click apply and it remains unticked)

If anyone could help that would be great.
Otherwise i would recommend not to use the dynadock

Answer:Portege M800 and external monitor with Dynadock issue

Sorry mate but I still don?t understand what you are speaking about? What problem do you have?

Fact is that Dynadock video drivers give you the option of viewing a total of three screens.
- The screen on the notebook,
- external monitor connected to the video port on the notebook (if available)
- ewxternal monitor connected to the Dynadock

Furthermore you can use Mirror Mode and Extended Mode.

Mirror Mode creates an identical display ? from your computer screen to the external monitor
Extended Mode extended Mode lets you split your display across multiple monitors.

These are the features which you can use in connection with Dynadock

Hi,

i bought a new M800 a month ago, and it is until recently that i realise, with my new Senheisser earbuds (and other earbuds too), that i can hear all the time a fricative sound.

I've tried all sorts of things, configuring microphone settings and dolby settings, upgrading sound driver, nothing seems to get the "parasite" out.
What's worse, when i open a music file, the noise actually gets amplified and i can hear a buzz sound especially when piano music is being played.

However, if i connect the laptop to a loudspeaker, the noise is negligible.

Does it mean that my sound cart has a problem? or it is the line-out jack?

Thanks a lot!!

What you can do now? If you have installed your own Windows version try it with ?factory settings?. Maybe it has something to do with the software or so? I?m not sure.

If it doesn?t work I think you will need professional help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and exchange faulty hardware parts if it?s necessary.

I have just purchased a number of new M800's (model number - PPM81A-06L01J) and all have second monitors attached.

On all of the secondary monitors there are wavy horizontal lines. The secondary monitors are all of different make and model and different sizes. They are all also set to their native resolution and refresh rates. I have also got the latest video drivers installed . Does any body have any idea as to why this is and how to fix it?

Cheers

Brad

Answer:Portege M800 - Horizontal lines on external monitor

I had a similar issue, it turned out to be the quality of the VGA Cable. Upgrading to a properly shielded quality cable fixed the problem :)

Hello,

I'm French and I bought a laptop Toshiba Portege M800-10v!

This pc is currently great! However, I noticed something disturbing.

In effect: when you start Windows Vista, I get the message "Please Wait" which remains for more than a minute! I found that I was not alone! But I can not find any information on that.

You know more?

Thank you.
PS: Excuse me for my English.

Answer:Portege M800 - At boot up message "Please wait" remains more than a minute.

If you are not alone I would like to know what other people say about this issue.
Such slow start-ups are often discussed here on this forum.
Have a look into http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947

I am pretty sure it happen because your preinstalled operating system is not optimized and right configured.

When I connect a device via a USB the system freezes. This happens with any device even something that has been used before. Example - if I switch on the printer /plug in my Blackberry to sync the .laptop just goes so slow that I have to do a restart with the devices still connected to get the system to work again. Running on Vista. Any help please?

Answer:Portege M800-106 System Freezes when I connect a device via USB port

Hi

Can you see yellow exclamation marks in device manager? Maybe a driver isn?t installed properly to the system freezes.
Furthermore I would try to remove the USB ports in device manager. After this restart your notebook and the USB ports will be recognized again.

Have you tried a BIOS update? If not you should do this. Before you start the update, close all running programs and make sure that you are logged in as administrator.

Last but not least try reinstalling Windows using Toshiba recovery disk. This takes only few minutes and then you have factory settings again! :)

I have a strange problem with my M800:
after 20 minutes of audio playing, the computer is periodically freezing for about a second and then works ok for about a minute.

The problem is the same with any audio player I am using: WMP11 or AIMP2.5. It works well for the first 20 minutes, then it is starting freezing.

If I close one player and open the other one, it works ok for 20 minutes, then the problem appears.

I have to mention that I have the latest Toshiba driver.

Answer:Portege M800 sound frezzes for 1sec using Vista 64bit

Hm, that?s really strange?

Do you hear music from CD or HDD? Maybe something want to read or write a file on the HDD, so you have the freezes.

You can try to disable the TEMPRO in msconfig
Start => run => msconfig => Startup
Here you can disable it.

Check if you have the newest chipset driver from the Toshiba website.

I?m interested in, what is the solution of this problem.

If hold my Toshiba Portege M800 by the front-left section, on the bottom side, it sometimes shuts down...

The power light (top left) is still illuminated, like it's in sleep mode but is unresponsive. The only way to get it started again is to hold the power key for several seconds and then restart

Has anyone else had this problem? Is my Laptop faulty?

Thanks

Answer:Portege M800 - Shutting down if I hold it by the front left section

It sounds like there is a loose cable or a circuit problem.

Is the laptop under warranty? You should send it to an Authorized Service Center for repair.

Answer:Portege M800-PPM81E - remote control installation issue

Hi

Remove the old remote controller software from the system.
Then visit the Toshiba European driver page and download the necessary tools and drivers.

On the Toshiba page I found the Remote Control Manager v.2.4.0.1. This driver is needed to get the Remote control work.

Hi all,

I own a Toshiba Portege M800-107, I have recently installed windows 7 (ultimate edition), which enhanced my laptop capabilities. The only problems I face are:

1) The Power Management utility, where I have install the required drivers from the official page of Toshiba, the problem is that the Value Added package is installed without the power management. For now I over come the problem by using the power options offered by Windows 7.

2) The most important problem is the HDD Protection Utility which every time I try to install the driver from the official site, it stops the installation with the reason that this "hardware is not supported by this computer"

Apart those problems the laptop is working perfectly and faster.

If any one could assist me with my problems I would be very appreciated.

Answer:Portege M800-107: Power Management & HDD Protection Utility questions!

> 1) The Power Management utility, where I have install the required drivers from the official page of Toshiba, the problem is that the Value Added package is installed without the power management. For now I over come the problem by using the power options offered by Windows 7.

There is no special Power Saver tool for Win 7. The Value added package provides some additional options which you can find in Win 7/Vista power management.

Check this HowTo:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=41

> 2) The most important problem is the HDD Protection Utility which every time I try to install the driver from the official site, it stops the installation with the reason that this "hardware is not supported by this computer"

The HDD Protection Utility using the acceleration sensor built in the computer.
The point is that there are different M800 on the market and possibly your M800 does not support the acceleration sensor. This could be the reason why you cannot install this tool.

Hi there

I have the new R700 that I am developing a Windows 7 Enterprise build for and I cannot find the driver files or correct install programs for the 32bit version of the TOSHIBA Fingerprint Utility. I found the download for the R700 on the US site, and while this installs, it does not have the 32bit driver for the Fingerprint Scanner in the R700. Can someone either direct me to the correct download, or post the x86 download on the NZ site?

BTW - the x64 download works fine if I install Windows 7 Ent x64 and install it.

Model number = PT311A-00J00Q
Component = Authen Tec Inc. AES1660
PCI Device ID = USB\VID_08FF&PID_168B

Thanks

Answer:Portege R700 - Need drivers for Windows 7 32bit

Hey,

Usually your exact model number is listed on the Australian page so it seems that you have an Australian model:
http://www.mytoshiba.com.au

The problem is I can?t find any 32bit drivers there? :(

So I checked the European page where I found a similar model, PT311E. There you can download Fingerprint Utility for Windows 7 32bit, it?s available!!!

Notebook > Portege > Portege R Series > Portege R700 > PT311E > Windows 7 32bit

Hi All

I have rebuilt a Portege R700 with Windows 7 32bit O/S. I have downloaded the drivers from Toshiba site but cannot get the only listed NIC driver to work. It seems to install ok but will not work. If I try "update driver" with device manager and point to the expanded files, it says the required software cannot be found.

Is there a driver that works and can someone tell me where it is please?

Regards

Dave

Answer:Portege R700 - Windows 7 32bit - NIC driver does not work.

Hi All

Here is a further bit of information on the problem.

The laptop is now picking up an IP address but when in device manager, there are exclamation marks at PCI Simple Communications Controller under "Other Devices" and there are 2 entries under "Network Adapters". One is Intel 82567LF - this one is ok and the other one is Intel 82577LM - this one has the exclamation mark.

I have removed them and done a "scan for hardware changes" but is just puts them all back in.

Any idea whatr NIC driver works and also, what driver I need for the PCI Simple Communications Controller?

Regards

Dave

Dear All,

My portege M700 laptop has for the most part performed reliably.
However, it used to be very sluggish resuming from sleep after a few wake-sleep iterations, taking >5min.

I have now installed Windows 7 32-bit, which is working very well. There are no longer any problems with resuming from sleep. However, about 1-2 times per day now I get a message that Explorer has crashed and must restart. About once per week, the system locks up entirely with a windows blue screen (kernel fault). Most times, in the few seconds around the time the screen freezes, I hear the fan switch on at full speed (much faster than it ever normally runs) and the case becomes quite warm.

I have installed the latest Windows 7 32-bit drivers from the Toshiba UK website.

Can anyone help me diagnose the cause of these crashes?

Many thanks,

Chris.

Answer:Portege M700 crashes after upgrading to Windows 7 32bit

Hi

It?s hard to say what could cause this strange system behavior.
But you said something about warm case and fans starts to rotate faster?

It seems that the notebooks internal temperature increases to a higher level.
Higher temperature can affect the RAM modules and this might be the reason why the system hangs and does not response.

What to say? you should check the Win 7 power management settings.
There are a lot of options which could decrease the CPU performance and could increase the cooling.
Furthermore you should check if the cooling fans are free of dust? clogged fans could not rotate properly and this would increase the temperature as well.

Hope this helps you?

I have recently bought the Portge R700 and am disappointed with the memory. I have a licenced edition of Windows 7 64-bit: what problems might occur if I upgrade? Once installed, I can then use 8Mb RAM.

Furthermore I found the website misleading reagrding the ability to use 8Mb RAM with the32-bit OS. I have 4Mb installed, ans see that only 2.86Mb is usable.

I receive 'low memory' messages and would like to know how to allocate more RAM to video.

Answer:Portege R700 - Upgrade from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit and memory question

Hi

Upgrading from 32 to 64 (which actually means installing fresh since there is no upgrade path from 32 to 64) will probably give no issues.

There are could be strange pitfalls - I think some special security software are not always fast enough to follow the major trends among consumers.
I.e. there are electonic ID's client software used to identify yourself in government and authorities. Those could be limited to 32 bit versions.
I think the Flash-plugin for your web browser used to be limited to 32 bit browsers only, but I am not sure if that issue still applies.

Apart from that You should consider if this unit is a company owned one and then discuss with your IT department if this is an OK move.
If this is just your private unit and you do not have issues with Flash (if this is still a limitation) I see no major problems going to 64 bit OS.

You will be able to adress and use all your memory except for the part allocated to video.

The low amount of memory You see currently is simply caused by the limits of the OS architecture (32 bit).

Low memory messages are a bit odd however since 2. something GB memory should be anough for daily use.
If You are not using memory hungry applications maybe you should check your software (viruses, software problems) and possibly recover the unit.

Hi!

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Answer:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

hi,
i have a portege m200 and because it doesn't have any device on it (fdd, dvd) i want to be able to boot from an sd-card. For that I need the newest bios version v1.70win, but to intall it ,it requires the Common Module. I have instaled it (there was no error, at least) but when I retry to do the update , a"missing common module" message appears. So I'm a little bit confused. I suppose that the best think to do is to erase any previous version of common module, and reintall it, but I have no ideea how should I do it.
can anyone give me clue, or maybe i'm on the wrong path!?
thanks,
daniel

Answer:Portege M200 BIOS update

Hello Daniel

As far as I know it?s not necessary to install a Common Modules if you want to update the BIOS. Nevertheless normally you can find the Common Modules in ?Add and remove programs?. If you need a whole instruction ?how to make a BIOS update? you can find it on the Toshiba website.

http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

Please go to ?Support & Downloads? then ?Knowledge Base?. There you can search for ?BIOS update?.

Hi

On the Toshiba EU driver page you can find only the win-based BIOS update version.
This means that BIOS can be updated from running system only and you need to run Windows OS in order to start the BIOS update procedure. Linux isn't supported in this case...

Hello,

I'm trying to update the BIOS of my R700 computers with a command line on Windows 7 (x86 french edition).
The BIOS version I'm trying to use is P007Bv170_EC73V140.

I have downloaded the bios-20101112151130.zip from Toshiba official website. In the zip file, there is no instruction (no Readme.txt or other help files ...).

Is there a way to silently upgrade the BIOS ?
Thank you for your help,

Hey,

You have to start the exe file that you can find in zip-archive that you downloaded. After this the BIOS update will start.

But before you do this update, unzip all files and close all running programs. Make also sure that you are logged in as Administrator.

Folks,

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

Help

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

Hello.

I have a Portege Z835, with a battery problem: don't charge. The battery indicator says "3% connected and charging" but it don't charging the battery.

Some forums says that the solution is updating the Bios. I have a Bios update v.1.60 ready for install. When I try to install, we get the message "the battery power is not enough".

My power cord is always connected. If I disconnect the power cord, laptop is off.

Please, what can I do?

Thanks.

GB.

Answer:Portege Z835 - need help with BIOS update

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?
Is warranty still valid?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for help or even their opinion.
