Portege M400 - Vista - External Monitor + internal tablet functionality

Question: Portege M400 - Vista - External Monitor + internal tablet functionality

Hi All,

I have a 24" Wide screen monitor connected via the docking station on my M400. My question is, is it possible to also use the internal LCD and it's tablet functionality when using my 24" monitor.

The 24" display is fine but the internal LCD display is rotated 90 degrees giving a black border top and bottom (portrait way up) but the digitizer is working in landscape mode. So if I move the pen down it moves to the right on the screen :)

It is so close to being right I hope that this can be achieved. It would be great to work off of the 24" monitor and to have the Windows Journal open for writing notes on the tablet screen.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Portege M400 - Vista - External Monitor + internal tablet functionality

Hmmm? if you want to change the screen orientation I would suggest to checking the Toshiba Tablet options.
There you should find the Tool called ?Rotation Utility?.

This Utility provides some option to change the screen orientation in the PC mode and in the Tablet mode.
When the notebook was set to Tablet mode you can choose between Primary portrait, primary landscape, secondary landscape and secondary portrait.

Check it simply

I have a Portege M400-s5032x tablet and a pa3680u docking station. I would like to get a bigger external monitor for use with the dock, what is the biggest monitor I can use?

I have a 18.5 widescreen on there now and would like to go up to a 20 or 22 inch widescreen.

Answer:What is the largest external monitor that I can use with Portege M400?

As far as I know there is no limitation. You can use whatever you want.
Only thing that can be problematic is screen resolution.

Has docking station DVI port?

Can the Portege M400 SXVGA (i.e. 1400x1050) support 1400x1050 via analogue to external monitor? I ask this because I can't get it to! The largest it is happy delivering, even though the monitor is a TFT 1400x1050 screen, is 1280x1024.

I have downloaded the latest Intel drivers, and screen drivers, and although the O/S is reporting the screen as being happy to show 1400x1024, it is not an option when selecting resolutions.

Is this a known problem?
Is it rectified by using digital?
Am I being stupid?!

The maximal resulution on the external display with the Chipset used in the M400 is 1024x768

I would like to be able to use the laptop screen as a tablet whilst viewing an external monitor. The problem is that when using the laptop in its tablet configuration (the screen rotated and clipped in on top) the external monitor shows the image upside down. If I rotate the output for the screen image then I have to use the tablet upside down which is impossible when docked. Is there anyway of independently setting the screen rotation for the tablet and that of the external monitor?
If anyone could help me with this I would be grateful as at the moment I have to undock the tablet and use upside down or not use the external monitor.

I am using Windows tablet SP on a Portege M400 and an external 22" LCD monitor

I am unable to use the extended deasktop feature with my m400. I installed the latest video drivers. When I go to the intel graphics media accelerator driver under display properties and choose extended desktop I can't use my external monitor as the primary monitor.

Answer:Cannot use external monitor as the primary monitor with Portege M400

Maybe is it technical limitation of Intel graphic card. I know for example that on Portege M200 it is not possible to set the external monitor as primary device and the internal screen as secondary device. No way.

Maybe some M400 owner post own experience about that.

Answer:Portege M400 - What tablet utilities I need?

Have you already checked the Toshiba page? If not, do it please: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

As you can see there are no Windows 7 downloads for this model available. :(

You can only try the Vista drivers. Some Vista drivers are also work on Windows 7.
Therefore you can find the ?installation instructions? document. Use this list as a recommended driver installation order.

I have a Toshiba Portege z830.
I am using my laptop in "extended desktop" mode, with an external monitor, which is the primary display.
In this mode both displays are always on, but I want the built-in LCD to be open only when i use it.

Is this possible?

Answer:Portege Z830: I want to disable internal LCD and use only external monitor

In my opinion this is not possible.
In extended mode, you are using and internal display but extended and the extended part is visible on the external monitor.
In such case its no matter that your external monitor is set as primary display.

If you want to use external monitor only, you can output the video signal to external monitor only be pressing FN + F5

Where can I get a set of Product Recovery DVD-ROM discs for my Portege M400 Tablet please?

Answer:Portege M400 Tablet Product Recovery DVD-ROM

Usually you can order the recovery disk using this page:

But this page provides recovery disk only for the newer notebook series.
I?m not quite sure if you will be able to order the recovery disk because of the age of M400?

Anyway, the other possibility would be the ASP. You can get in contact with your authorized service partner and could ask for such disk?

In worst case you will need to use an own Windows disk and the Toshiba drivers are downloadable from driver page.

My company have three M400's and we all have the same problem. We are running XP professional. At least 50% of the time the screen freezes when viewing web pages. To unfreeze, I have to minimize and maxim\ise the page and the I can enter data. A typical scenario would be that I didn't realise the page has frozen until I click on a hyperlink and, although I hear the hyperlink click, nothing happens on the screen until I minimise and maximise. Once the screen has unfrozen, I can see that the PC has already jumpedto the new page but couldn't display it.

This seems to suggest a problem with the graphics dislpay hardware/softare.

Any thoughts as to what is going on? Anyone else had this problem? This is very annoying as our customer software is mostly web-based.

Answer:Webpages freeze on Portege M400 tablet PC

First remove the Intel Proset Utility in system management -> Add remove Programs
Second start msconfig and look for the Adobe Faststart for the Acrobat Reader (Sorry, but I don't remember the exact name). Deactivate it.
Now your system hangs should be gone.

Hi guys,

just had a question regarding my Toshiba Portege R700 as the screen went blank and i couldnt see the display or sometimes i could and it was very dark!

however the laptop would boot up as nomal and i could use it normally through an external display!

i subsequently replaced the screen and it started working again (happy days!)
However a few weeks down the line the same problem again the screen apparantly dies.

So i take it apart again and disconnect and reconnect the screen just to see if it would solve the problem and it did, its back and working again. I even tried the old screen i swapped out and that works too!
So i paid ?140+ for a new screen i didn't need, my question is what is the problem?

Cant find anything else on this topic so would appreciate any help thanks

Answer:Portege R700 internal screen very dark but can use external monitor

It difficult to say what could be wrong here? usually dark screen can be related to an faulty FL inverter.
But the notebook?s display supports an Led backlight so FL inverter should not be a problem here?
Maybe some loose contacts caused this?

I am using my Toshiba M400 in the port replicator.
The port replicator has two display outputs, one DVI and one external analog output.

I would like to use both monitors at the same time under Windows Vista RC1.
The port replicator manual mentions this should be possible depending on the computer connected to it.

"Depending on the computer connected to the port replicator, you may be able to connect external monitors to the DVI port and the external monitor port and display screens on both monitors at teh same time."

Does someone knows it the M400 supports that? I only get the DVI OR external monitor to work.
(It used to work with my old other and that function was just great).

Thanks a lot in advanced.

Answer:Portege M400: Port replicator using DVI Monitor and analog monitor

I am not 100% sure but pretty sure that you can not connect two external displays at the same time because of notebook graphic card restriction. You can extend you?re your desktop to two displays (internal and external one) or have the same picture on notebook LCD and external TFT connected to DVI or RGB port.

If I read carefully the sentence you posted I have understood that you can use both ports (depending on notebook) and use both displays screens on the same time (notebook display and external one).

All available modes to switch display to external one you can check with FN+F5 key combination or in ?Display Change Service? tab in Toshiba mobile extension tool.

Hi folks,

I just installed a Portege M400 with an external monitor from other manufacture. This monitor optimal resolution is 1680x1050. I installed the latest available Intel drivers from the toshiba web site together with the monitor drivers from display manufacture. I can't get this combination in its optimal resolution. Can someone of you help me with this issue please ?

One thing you should know : the monitor works perfect on an other portable... so it has nothing to do with the monitor itself...

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Portege M400: Resolution 1680x1050 on external display not available ?

Hi Steve

I think you are not able to use this resolution because it?s not available in the graphic card properties.
In my knowledge the graphic card driver doesn?t support different resolutions. Some of the resolutions are disabled or not listed in the graphic card driver.

Some users have solved such issue by using a different graphic driver but this was only possible on units with the nVidia or ATI graphic cards.
Unfortunately, I think there is nothing to do.

I'm trying to get an external LCD TV with native resolution 1360x768 connected to the external VGA port of my Toshiba Portege M400. This only works with an external resolution of 1024x768. Wide screen resolutions are just not available in the graphics options. I tried this also using Powerstrip, but I did not manage to get it to 1360x768. With another laptop I did.

According to the specifications of the Intel 945GM chipset, it should support wide screen resolutions. It seems to be just a shortcoming of the Toshiba drivers. Is there any solution to this problem?

Answer:Portege M400: no wide screen external resolution (1360x768)

Hi Marijn

I saw the other posting where you have posted about the same theme and unfortunately; there is nothing to do!
It seems that the driver doesn?t support this resolution. Not every screen resolution is listed in the graphic drivers.
If the graphic driver doesn?t support your favorite resolution so you have no much possibilities. You have to choose and to use a available screen resolution.

I've recently upgraded my M400-146 to Vista Ultimate (32-bit) and Vista runs ok, but not quite as well as expected. If I compare Vista Experience Indexes across a few systems, the M400 compares pretty poorly.

On the M400 (Core 2 Duo 2GHz + 2 x 1GB PC-5300) I get an experience index of:-

Overall Score = 2.6, CPU=3.9, Memory=2.6 (other values seem ok)

On a desktop system (Core 2 Duo E6600 + 2 x 1GB PC-6400 (DDR2 1066), integrated Intel graphics) I get:-

Overall=3.8, CPU=5.3, Memory=5.6 (limited by integrated graphics)

On one non-Toshiba laptop (PM-1.8GHz, 2x1GB):-

CPU=3.8, Memory=4.0

So the laptop with a much slower CPU and RAM that's much slower than the M400 scores better for Memory and just about the same for CPU.

One thing I have seen is that Vista describes the experience index as 'Unrated'. If I run WinSAT manually always see errors about 'RDTSC to QPC delta is too high'.

Has anyone else seen the RDTSC to QPC delta error? What Experience indexes do you get?

I should also say that I've compared the performance of the M400 with SiSoft Sandra running both XP & Vista, under Vista Sandra reports just under half the performance of XP on every measure!

Answer:Portege M400: Vista performance

Hello Mike

What to say? Many people are disappointed with Vista performance. I must be honest to you and say that this fact does not wonder me at all.

I do not have this small and nice notebook but you should try to optimize OS on your own needs and also disable all stuff you don?t need for your work. Maybe you should not be focused on this score shown by Vista but try to optimize the system to run stabile and fast enough for you.

BTW: have you updated BIOS to latest version 3.20?

Hi there!

I've got a problem with my Toshiba Portege M400 (don't know if this is a topic for the vista board or the portege support board, anyway). I've installed the Vista Express Upgrade some month ago and everything worked fine for some time.
But during the last 4 weeks, my laptop seems to have a problem when shutting down. It doesn't matter if it just hibernates or shuts down completely, the computer automatically turns itself on after being off for about 5 seconds.
I have to use the power switch to turn it off again (and then it stays off). Any ideas? I haven't changed anything and it might be a hardware problem but my guess is that it has something to do with Vista ;)

Answer:Shutdown problems under Vista with a Portege M400

did you installed some software or tools/applications/updates? Sometimes a little update can disturb the whole system and preventing it from proper function. So, just check what was installed and maybe it would be useful to install the newest bios, maybe update all drivers etc.. to make sure everthing is updated and actual.

M400 (*_VISTA_* with most recent utilities for power model) FAN permanently blows very noisy regardless of real cooling need.

Even with zero job loaded, under 1% activity (flat curve), 50 % processor speed in the power model and all power parameters at the minimal value, FAN does not reduce speed. After a restart, for a short time, the noise is supportable, we can conclude that the FAN seems to be capable of low speed.

Hi Guys.. I seek your help.

I have downloaded all the new Vista related drivers avaiable from Toshiba to support the new install of Vista Business on my old Portege M400, which came preloaded with XP Tablet version and kept them ready on a CD.

I have also upgraded the ACPI BIOS version to the latest available 3.80.

I insert the first CD of Vista Business and do a boot. ( I also have a n upgrade Vista Business CD but I want to do a clean install).
I go past initial steps and choose Install.
I am confronted with an error message " No drives were found. Click load driver to provide a mass storage device for installation"

Seems like Vista is not able to see the onboard IDE Hard Disk and it's a driver issue.

I hit the 'Rescan' button available on the Install windows and another message pops up: " No Device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers and then Click OK!!"

On the currently loaded XP: The Device Manager shows the currently loaded IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers as: " Intel (R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers and Primary IDE Channel.

Disk Drives shown are: Toshiba RAID LD0 SCSI Disk Device

Pls advise, as to which new drivers from the available downloads of Vista drivers for my ML 400 Model PPM40E, should I choose here so that my Vista install recognises the available hard disk?

Answer:Cannot install Vista Business on Portege M400 - IDE issues

It?s very easy to solve this issue.
If you would look on the Toshiba European driver page (Portege M400 section), then you would notice that an RAID driver is available for this notebook model.

The Vista cannot be installed because it cannot find the HDD due to missing RAID driver!

You have to install firstly the RAID driver and then you could follow with the Vista Setup.
As far as I know the Vista setup accept the USB flash stick so you could use such stick in order to include the RAID driver.

Hope I could provide some useful hints?.

Cheers mate

I have upgraded an M400 which came with XP to Vista Business. Launching the Toshiba Recovery Disk utility delivers a message "not HDD partition found". The management console shows a recovery partition - though it probably still has the XP recovery info.

Anybody got ideas on how to transfer in a Vista recovery image into this partition? Is this available from Toshiba somewhere in the world? I can get my tech support people to chase it if we know it exists....

From Australia

Answer:Creating Vista Recovery disk on Portege M400

maybe you should properly format the drive and remove ALL partitions with an external program (like UBCD -> "Ultimate Boot CD") and then try it again.

It can be that the XP recovery partition is blocking the new recovery/installation process.

If I were you I would try this format-thingy.

Otherwise grab another HDD and try it with this. ;)

I have owned a Portege M400 for a 3-4 months now, and I'm just wondering if there's even one single person out there who has succeeded to get this laptop work under vista 64bit.

I finally got bluetooth drivers to work, after drivers came avaiable. But the next list doesn't work or I havent found drivers that work.

-Buttons under the LCD screen
-Accelometer (and all the utilites like rotating display or doing something while tilting machine)
-HDD protection utility ( I installed Vista drivers, but they totally destroyed the machine and I had to restore system. windows didn't start after installation)
-Fingerprint reader

And I could live if I just could get buttons and accelometer to work, but still it would be great that the whole laptop would work.

I am starting to lose hope and I am already considering to install pirate Vista 32bit into that laptop... Because it seems that It was a mistake to buy 64bit ultimate. some Toshibas drivers state they are "vista" drivers but they still don't work with 64bit version, that's bit frustating...

Anyway if anyone could help me I would appreciate it a lot! Because i'm slowly getting frustated with this issue with 64bit vista.

Thanks in advance

I have a toshiba portege m400.
It has windows xp proffessional SP3 installed (the previous owner replaced it with this from the xp tablet edition - i want to upgrade to vista so i can have the tablet abilities back!)

Anyway, I've got a version of vista - a home premium upgrade version.
When i try installing it it comes up with the error:

+'This computer is not compliant with the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) standard. Windows must be installed onto a computer that supports ACPI. Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS update or install Windows on an ACPI-compliant computer.'+

When i try and boot from the cd it gets up to when i type in the product key, but then it tells me i should run this from my current operating system.

I've tried to update the BIOS (it's currently 1.8 and I've heard vista needs 2.0 at least). I tried to install the latest driver from the Toshiba website - BIOS version 3.2.8 but it tells me 'this computer is not supported' even though i went through the procedure of choosing my laptop's kind and spec and the driver came up on it's list.
Now i'm pulling my hair out.

Can someone please help me!
Would getting a full version of vista work (not an upgrade version) and boot it from the cd since it seemed to get further that way?

Answer:Portege M400: How to configure control buttons under Vista

On the Toshiba European driver page you will find all necessary Vista drivers for a Portege M400.
There is also an ?Button Support? driver and this driver allows you to customize and preset TOSHIBA special button settings.
There is also an Tablet PC Extension Package for Vista available!!!
This driver package installs a range of important utilities and contains this apclations:

TOSHIBA Rotation Utility: Set the default screen orientation you want the system to use when switching from PC to Tablet mode, or vice-versa.

TOSHIBA Tablet PC Buttons Driver: You can dedicate tablet buttons to performing common tasks so that you can easily operate your tablet computer when you're away from your workstation. For example, you can dedicate a button to open a program or to change your screen orientation.

TOSHIBA Accelerometer Utilities: These Utilities are a set of hardware utilities that work with the motion sensors built into you machine. With the Accelerometer, your machine will be able to detect the way you are holding it at any given moment. You can set the machine to perform a specific function when the unit is quickly tilted to the left or right, or to the front or back. You can also take control of the cursor in some applications and make it move by leaning the PC in a certain direction

I'm a owner of a Portege M400 (PPM40E) and recently upgraded my operating system to Vista. All new drivers work fine except the one for the *TPM*. Here's what happens.

The installation of the Security Platform goes fine. I can create a Personal Secure Drive (PSD), load and unload it until the first time I turn off my computer.
After each attempt of loading the PSD is replied by a crash. Two seconds after the password submission I get a blue screen which informs me the source of the problem: *PFN_LIST_CORRUPT*, a memory dump file is created and the system restarts.

Did anyone else experience this problem? Does anyone know how to restore the data from a manually created backup of the PSD? The restore dialog doesn't accept the **.fsb* file.

It would be great if someone could help me with this one as I have no "unencrypted" backup of the files I had stored on the PSD.

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Portege M400 and Vista - PSD load ends with crash

I have googled a little bit and found some details about PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error message.
The PFN means Page Frame Number and it describes the division of single frames of main memory where the application commands or driver running.
If an driver or application exceed such frame then a BSOD will appear.

Here are some hints and proposals to solve such issue which I found on some external webpage:
- update the BIOS and set it to the default settings
- reinstall and update the display driver, sound driver, LAN driver, etc?
- reinstall the Security Assist,
- update the Windows OS

In worst case this issue could be caused by RAM malfunction and in such case the RAM modules should be replaced.

Sorry but I didn?t find more infos regarding such issue.

I have just installed a new hard disk and VISTA (Missing the Toshiba HDD Recovery section - Still do not know how to create)

Anyway I have managed to successfully install VISTA. (Trick was to install the Raid Divers in the installation process)

Current BIOS 1.6

I would like to update my BIOS to version 3.80 (Latest)
I have down loaded the BIOS 3.80 files BUT it will not load.

1. I do not have a FDD :(

2. I tried burinng a CD-ROM from the ISO) Bot I could not get it to boot from the CD-ROM (I only have a Toshiba Extenal CD Rom Drive and not sure if it can boot from CD)

3. I tried to run the Launcher and install via Windows BUT received an error message "NOT SUPPORTED ON THIS COMPUTER"

I think the Launcher can only run under XP not vista.

Is there any steps I am missing... Do I need to do an incremental BIOS update and how do I install without a FDD or Bootable CD-Rom Drive?

Answer:Portege M400 - Bios 3.8 Upgrade installation (Vista)

You don?t need a FDD because the Toshiba BIOS is win-based BIOS and not traditional BIOS and this would mean that you have to execute the BIOS update while OS is running.

> . I tried burning a CD-ROM from the ISO) But I could not get it to boot from the CD-ROM (I only have a Toshiba External CD Rom Drive and not sure if it can boot from CD)
As mentioned above this BIOS update can be executed ONLY while OS is running! It?s win-based BIOS!!

> 3. I tried to run the Launcher and install via Windows BUT received an error message "NOT SUPPORTED ON THIS COMPUTER"
Either you have chosen a BIOS update which does not support this notebook or you have to run this update using the Toshiba preinstalled Windows OS.

> Do I need to do an incremental BIOS update and how do I install without a FDD or Bootable CD-Rom Drive?
Not possible -> see point 1 and 2

Hi All

I've upgraded from XP to Vista on my M400 and want to get Ulead Movie Factory going. The only download I can see is for a patch but I don't have the original anymore. Does anyone know where I can download the original from?

Answer:Where to download Ulead Movie Factory for Portege M400 & Vista

Did you find the Ulead Movie Factory software on the preinstalled Toshiba image?

If yes then I assume this program was bundled with the notebook and cannot be installed separately.
Either you will use the Toshiba recovery CD and would reinstall the notebook to use this program or you will buy a full version.

Best regards

I have installed Vista Ultimate on a brand new Portege M400.
The mouse cursor doesn't stop flickering.

It changes briefly about 2 times a second form the usual arrow to the "blue circle" indicating a context change.
Any idea why and how I could solve this "feature" ?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Vista on Portege M400: mouse doesn't stop flickering

To be honest, I have no idea why your cursor flickers.
But one is sure? this notebook was delivered with Win XP and I presume the mouse worked properly on installed XP. Am I right?

Well, in such case it must be something wrong with the software.
Maybe you have installed the whole Toshiba drivers in the wrong order or some drivers are missing. Maybe the graphic driver must be updated. Who knows ?:|
Such issues are uncommon and it?s necessary to investigate!

Please install all drivers like mentioned in the Toshiba installation instruction txt file which can be found on the driver page.
Then update the Vista to the latest state!!!

Notebook M400-170 with Vista OS and latest Toshiba downloads.

If you open the Toshiba specific property sheet of the Vista power manager (Tree entry =>"TOSHIBA Power Settings V8.02.00") you will see a property called ""Cooling method" - very interesting.

But, what is the difference between the two values "Battery optimized" and "Cooling optimzed" ?

After some tests, interest decrease because regardless of the value of that parameter, even after a sufficient time for stabilization, *the FAN behaviour remains unchanged : it blows useless and extracts only cold air ...*

Answer:Portege M400 - Vista specific power managment V8.02.00 parameters

Hm, did you installed the latest BIOS? Maybe the powersaver software needs the latest version, I guess.

Another thing would be to close some programs which run in the background and throttle some functions (e.g. graphical stuff) down to see if it stops blowing.

Can you please give a short feedback? Would appreciate it.

Toshiba Flash Cards crashes on Vista when windows is set to use the "windows standard" colour scheme under appearance settings, (for your information, I prefer to use this mode as vista runs quicker, uses less battery power and less system ram in this mode).

However it does not crash immediately, instead it seems to crash whenever I rotate the screen (which happens quite often as I?m using a tablet pc) with the previous version of the software it crashed on boot however that seems to have been rectified with this version although not completely, however when it crashes it will not fully close even if i force task manager to end the process (rather than just the task).

I have spent several hours working through the Vista Upgrade only. Upon a reboot as part of the process I now get a BSOD reporting a page fault error. Microsofts advice was to back out the upgrade and try again. Helpfully (or not) this has resulted in the same scenario second time around. The office is now closed for the weekend, presumably because no-one gets issues late Friday/over the weekend?!

There is a Kb on (kb 939720) which alludes to a similar problem and a hotfix, but you can't download it - you have to phone them. Have any other Portege users had the same issue and how have they resolved them?

Answer:Portege M400 : Upgrade from XP to Vista causes page fault in non paged area

just a little question: did you already installed the Vista compatible BIOS on your machine?? It?s one of the most important steps before installing the "wonderful" Vista on your harddisk (I cannot understand why you need it but OK it?s your machine... ;) )

If not already did, go to the Toshiba Driver Download site and download the latest BIOS for machine (Vista compatible) which is absolutely essential if you decided to put Windows Vista on your machine.

Here?s the link:

Would appreciate any feedback from you regarding your situation.

If you install Vista on the R20 tablet - do you get the functionality to write on the screen ?

Answer:Satellite R20: Can it run the tablet functionality under Vista?

Well, I?m not a R20 owner and have not installed the Vista but it seems the necessary drivers are available and the tablet functionality should works with Vista.
On the Toshiba Vista driver page I have found the Satellite R20 (PSR20) and the Tablet PC Extension Package for Vista.
The TOSHIBA Tablet PC Extension package installs a range of important utilities.

TOSHIBA Rotation Utility: Set the default screen orientation you want the system use when switching from PC to Tablet mode, or vice-versa.

TOSHIBA Tablet PC Buttons Driver: You can dedicate tablet buttons to performing common tasks so that you can easily operate your tablet computer when you're away from your workstation. For example, you can dedicate a button to open a program or to change your screen orientation.

TOSHIBA Accelerometer Utilities: The TOSHIBA Accelerometer Utilities are a set of hardware utilities that work with the motion sensors built into you machine. With the Accelerometer, your machine will be able to detect the way you are holding it at any given moment. You can set the machine to perform a specific function when the unit is quickly tilted to the left or right, or to the front or back.
You can also take control of the cursor in some applications and make it move by leaning the PC in a cert.

WE've juste purchased 2 Protege M400 and 20" Wide (1680x1050) monitors to go with it. Thr problem is that the current driver provided by Toshiba doesn't seem to have this resolution. The graphic hardware is perfectly capable of handling though, since it goes up to ~2000x1500 and is compatible with wide screen displays and digital TV.

This is a high end laptop with all the latest technology.
I'm quite sure it's a driver issue, I've tried several from Toshiba and Intel without luck.

Any ideas ?

Answer:M400 cannot output 1680x1050 to external 20" Wide monitor

I agree with you. According the users manuals this resolution is not supported (Appendix B ? Display Controller and Modes). Sorry but if the original Intel driver can not help I don?t see there other solution.

Have a lot of fun with this nice unit!!!

We have a Portege R500-11Z running XP and want to use Skype with an external desk microphone and the internal speakers.

When we plug the mic into the MIC socket on the Portege, the built-in speakers cut out!

How do we use an external mic and still hear the internal speakers?

Answer:Portege R500-11Z: How can use external mic and hear internal speakers

> When we plug the mic into the MIC socket on the Portege, the built-in speakers cut out!
Are you sure you used the Mic port and not headphone port?

Did you check your Skype Audio settings?
There is an option called ?Ring through the Speaker too? or something like that.

Please check also the Realtek HD audio manager in control panel.
There is a tab called Audio I/O.

Usually you can change the connector settings clicking on the small tool/key icon.
Disable the option called ?Mute the rear panel output when front headphone plugged in?

As you see it?s called ?headphone? and not microphone and therefore I?m a little bit confused why the speakers are off when connecting an external mic.

By the way; there is also an tab called Microphone.
Check if both options which reduce the echo and noise are OFF

My TOSHIBA (ex-laptop) Portege(Z930) board burned out with hot water. I removed the tiny SSD and now need to transfer the data with a USB to another PC.

I borrowed from a friend a SATA to USB adapter with 2 interfaces and even the small connectors for SATA was not small enough for TOSHIBA's SSD. Apparently I need a special SATA to USB adapter which fits to TOSHIBA Portege's mSata.

The reason I wrote here is because there are many SATA USB adapters in internet advertised but it seems they have bigger connectors. So TOSHIBA calls the SSD mSATA labeled on it, but many people call mSATA for one size bigger SSD.

I don't want to order something doesn't fit again. Is there anyone who already removed SSD from Portege?
Could you provide me a link for such adapter?

Answer:Portege Z930 - need external controller for internal SSD drive

The notebook was equipped with an HM77 Intel Panther Point chip and with the launch of this chip Intel allowed the notebook manufacturers to integrate the mSATA (micro SATA) SSD form factor.

There is also an difference between the mSATA form factors?
Since the mSATA is limited to four (NAND) chips only, Intel has developed a new standard of mSATA which is called m.2 or mSATA2.

In many cases this is called also NGFF (New Generation Form Factor)
This m.2 standard is longer and has a lower profile?

I'm not quite sure if this Portege Z930 supports mSATA or mSATA2 but you check the internal SSD drive where this information should be available

Well, I've finally had it. I've had my 6365 CTO X60 tablet pc for over a year now and last Monday I lost pen functionality in tablet pc mode in the afternoon after working fine in the morning. It works fine, even now after rotating the screen back to laptop mode. As soon as the screen is rotated back to tablet pc mode, no pen functionality but the mouse still works fine so I know it's functional in laptop mode but rotate back, all ok!  I did uninstall the Wacom drivers, restart, and then downloaded the tablet pc, windows xp version drivers from the site as instructed in a previous post. Unfortunately, the digitizer pen is still disabled in tablet pc mode and works fine when rotated back to laptop mode. I've called Lenovo tech support in Atlanta four times now and they've been totally useless. I wiped out my X60 tablet last Friday and used Rescue and Recovery to reinstall the operating system back to it's factory settings. I went back and unistalled and reinstalled the Wacom driver. Nothing. Since that didn't work either I've requested the box to ship this back to the Memphis Depot. Hopefully, I'll just get a new replacement machine that works but I'm so angry and frustrated w/ Lenovo's support because it's obvious that the people on the phone are not tech specialists and they couldn't even point me in a direction to get this fixed. It's cost me over a week now wo... Answer:X60 tablet pc digitizer pen functionality disabled in tablet pc mode

Problem solved! While the support folks weren't able to fix the problem over the phone, they did overnite me a prepaid return box which I sent back that day. Two days later they overnited my X60 tablet back fixed with a note saying 'LCD enabled'. I'm impressed how quickly they got my tablet pc back up and running. I'm glad I got that 3-yr. support warranty because I usually opt out of those things. This totally paid for itself. I just wish I hadn't been so reluctant to send back my laptop because I do need it for work and I figured I wouldn't get it back for at least a week or longer. I was so frustrated and pessimistic that I forgot sometimes these problems do get fixed in a very satisfactory manner. It's too bad the initial steps that led to sending it back were so painful. Bottom line: Lenovo fixed my pc quickly, no questions asked. Thanks!

I know this is a common problem but it doesn't seem solveable on my Toshiba M400.

I have upgraded to 4GB RAM (2x2GB) and am running a 64-bit OS, yet the OS can only see ~3.3GB of the 4GB installed. The BIOS shows 4G. I understand some machines have a BIOS option to enable the OS to use all 4GB. Am I missing something, this feature doesn't seem to be available in the M400 BUIS.

Which 64bit OS? If its Vista, try Service Pack 1.

The screen on the R500 (PPR50E-01301TEN) is fine for use for an hour or two on the go, but if I use it persistently through the day, I get a bad neck and headaches (may be the angle that you have to look at it as much as its small size). So I want to get external monitors for it at work and at home. The home one would preferably be an LCD TV.

The trouble is, Windows tells me that the supported widescreen resolutions for the external monitor are 1280x768, 1920x1080 and 1920x1200. Linux only wants to offer me 1280x800 or lower, although I might be able to fix that with a bit of tweaking. Assuming Windows is right, does anyone know of an 18-21" widescreen monitor or TV with one of the supported resolutions as its native resolution, or even as a supported resolution? I can't find anything.

It probably needs to be 1920x1xxx, because 1280x768 is going to be pretty grainy close up on a 18"+ monitor. Why aren't any of the intermediate resolutions common on widescreen monitors (e.g. 1440x900 or 1680x1050) supported? If it can do 1920x1xxx, it should be able to do them.

Answer:Need external monitor for Portege R500

If I get the Port Replicator for my Portege R500 (PPR50E-01301TEN) and connect external monitor via DVI, will that widen the range of supported resolutions?

I was excited to receive my new toshiba portege m400 today, but the fan noise is quite bad.
The problem is that it always runs 100% -- I tried the Toshiba power save properties to
set the fan speed but to no avail, it has no effect at all. Furthermore, I tried to set
all three bios power options (low, full power, user) but that has no effect either.
Worst of all, the cpu temperature is very cool, just 29 degrees, and there is no need
at all to run the fan at full speed. I guess the power save utilities are bugged and I wonder
if Toshiba will come out with a new version of their tools? Is there anything I can do?

-- Daan.

ps. bios version 1.30, toshiba power save tools 7.08.00. Cpu speed is dynamic, usually at 1 ghz and
the temprature is very low.

Hi to everybody :)

I have a Portege M400 with a T2300 and I would like to know If is possible to make a cpu's upgrade
If yes, which cpu are compatible and with which version of bios?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Portege M400: Is it possible to upgrade CPU

Usually the CPU upgrade or replacement on the notebooks is not possible or very difficult and risky. It could be possible that the notebook will not boot or will not run stable after the CPU upgrade. The overheating could be one of the biggest problems!!!

So I really not recommend upgrading the CPU!!! It?s not worth to risk the damage only to get a tiny CPU performance increase.

But if you want to know what CPU are supported by the chipset? so here is the list ;)

The M400 computer is equipped with an Intel Core Duo Processor or Intel Core Solo Processor. These processors incorporate a math co-processor, a 2MB L2 cache memory.

The M400 comes in with one of the following speeds:

_Intel Core Duo Processor_
- 1.66GHz (Processor Number : T2300)
- 1.83GHz (Processor Number : T2400)
- 2.00GHz (Processor Number : T2500)
- 2.16GHz (Processor Number : T2600)

_Intel Core Solo Processor_
- 1.66GHz (Processor Number : T1300)

Hope I could helps!

Regards and cheers buddy :)

I've been actively using my Portege M400 for almost 2 years. Few months
ago it has started becoming less and less easier to start up the
laptop. When I turn it on, the following happens:
* The screen remains black and doesn't display anything
* The power LED either blinks yellow or lights green
* The HDD LED blinks just one time for a 1/10 second and remains off, or doesn't light up at all
* Sometimes the fan starts working quite actively and loudly
The only thing I can do with it is to turn the laptop off and try
again. Sometimes it starts up after the first attempt, but sometimes I
have to try up to 10 times.
Here is a video showing the behaviour described above:

Any ideas what is this all about? Perhaps, I should cleap up the laptop inside, particularly the fan?

I am having problems calibrating my tablet pen.
A few weeks ago my pc was sent to Toshiba to have some work on the screen. I do not know if it was cleaned or replaced. Since then I have been unable to calibrate my pen in either landscape or portrait.
The pen works perfectly well at other times, but when the calibration screen appears I can't "click" in the spots. I can click the cancel button and I can right click too during calibration but not normal "click".
Although not a huge problem I would like to adjust the calibration slightly.
Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks,

Answer:Portege M400 Pen Calibration

Maybe it?s only a problem with the distance between the stylus and the screen.
But of course we shouldn?t exclude the fact that the ASP has worked on this notebook and maybe the technicians have forgotten something.

For example; if the system board was replaced on a notebook with accelerometer sensor it?s necessary to recalibrate this accelerometer with the Test & Diagnostics Software.
For example if the sensor is not calibrated the correct switching between landscape and portrait mode will not work.

Maybe a similar issue could be responsible for the pen calibration problems.
So I think it would be a good idea to contact the ASP again and ask for some details and what was changed on the notebook.

I recenlty purchased a Portege M400 and this completely freezes and requires a hard reboot at least once a day - any ideas on how to fix this?

Answer:Portege M400 keeps freezing

Do you use the Toshiba preinstalled image or did you install the OS manually?
Do you use any 3rd party software?

I don't know if it helps but sometimes a high temperature could be responsible for the notebook freezing.
In most cases the cooling modules cannot work properly because of bad air circulation.
Please be sure that you have enough space around the notebook and the fans are clean.

Furthermore you could check the Power saver settings which allow you to change the CPU processing speed and cooling method.

If it doesn't help so I would recommend asking the Toshiba service partner for the further help and diagnostic.
I assume the Portege M400 is a new unit and the warranty should be valid.

I have a new Portege M400. The fan runs continuously even when the computer is booted from cold. The CPU is definitley not running hot enough to need the fan. None of the settings in the TOSHIBA Power Saver cause the fan to turn off, even the Long Life setting. Is this a BIOS problem? Or a hardware failure? Or what?

Answer:Portege M400 fan noise

Did you use the Toshiba image?
I have found information that on some units the BIOS update benefits the Toshiba Power Saver features. What you can do is to check the installed BIOS version on the unit and compare it with the available version on the Toshiba page.

However, I would recommend also reinstalling the power saver. Check if new version is available. You can also try to clean the fans. Mostly this procedure helps.

Hello all,

im having heat problems with my second hand M400. Now the previous owner told me Toshiba changed the mainboard once.

Since the temps are high and the fan runs almost all the time even when theres no cpu usage and its throttled down im thinking the might have made a mistake at toshibas while reassembling the unit. Maybe they forgot the thermal grease or dindn't screw down the heatsink properly or therelike. And the fan dosent sound very healthy compared to my other, older M400.

Has any of you ever disassembled an M400? How do you get to the heatsink, from top or bottom of the unit? any fragile or tricky parts i should look out for? Is there a even a How-to with pictures out there in the depths of the internet? :D

I've built and repaired a lot of desktops, so im quite computer savvy, but on laptops i've only changed RAM so far. so im really greatful for all your tips.

thank you

Answer:Portege M400 - How can I disassemble it?

I think the best way is you contact the ASP again.

Disassembling a notebook is a little bit tricky. You must remove a lot of screws and parts and so this should only be done from a notebook technician.

Maybe you can find a workaround by using Google but a notebook technician can help you more.

I have a Portege M400 running XP SP2, and during normal use the temperature usually lies between 55 and 65 degrees celcius. At load the temperature is consistently above 60 degrees, between 60 and 75 degrees celsius.
I wondered if this is a normal temperature range - or perhaps I have been so unlucky as to have gotten a defective CPU.

Answer:Portege M400 - Temperature?

I am pretty sure you know that CPU temperature depends on CPU usage and also of notebook position (on the desk or on the knees) and how the unit can be cooled down.

In my opinion there is no reason to be worried. Now while typing this message and listening online radio (without much activity) CPU temperature is 63 degrees Celsius.

Running Ubuntu Linux on the M400 and it seems almost all BIOS versions prior 3.60 are broken because there are APIC quirk errors on the CPU. Maybe Microsoft could work around the broken APIC tables for a while but with Linux things are a bit cumbersome. Microsoft asked Toshiba for a BIOS update to deal with these issues and starting from 3.50 it seems to be fixed.

see here

Even in Linux no more APIC errors are seen. :-) But after updating to 3.60 BIOS the boot screen stays active and is preventing me to select an option for a multi boot entry (grub). When the OS is already starting the boot screen turns white at first and then gives finally control to the OS. Are others seeing this as well?

I am able to select something in my boot menu but it's more guessing because the boot screen is still on top. Very annoying this :-(

Another issue I have is that sometimes the system freezes for a couple of seconds and then goes on, nothing to be seen in logs when using Ubuntu or WXP tablet. So could be a bug in BIOS once again. Again looking for confirmation, are other experiencing this as well.

Did reflash 3.60 a couple of times but seeing this behaviour over and over again.

Although there seems to be some fan control in 3.60. It doesn't fire like a DC9 but still not as silent as the 1.80W or 2.10N BIOS versions were. Love to see these fan noise changes incorporated in 3.60 and later?

Hi Robert

I know you will hate me but the fact is that Portege M400 has sticker near the keyboard and there is written something like ?Designed for Microsoft ??. With short words: Linux OS is not supported.

If you need some help with Linux on Toshiba notebooks please check

Issue about freezing is very strange and if you want to check it properly install recovery image without any additional software. In this case you will have ?factory settings? and clean preinstalled OS. If you will notice some exceptional issues you should contact authorized service partner and clarify this.

Furthermore I would try to update the display driver and BIOS. Both you can find on the Toshiba website: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

Following up a recent post about using an external monitor with the M400, I have a query about using one with the M200. I realise that the M200 uses the Nvidia graphics adapter rather than the Intel graphics adapter in the M400 - is this better as far as using an external display is concerned? The M200 manual says it will support up to 1600 x 1536 resolution on an external display. I want to use my M200 in a docking station with an external monitor on extended desktop.

What would be the best resolution to go for with the external? Should I go for 1400 x 1050 to match the M200 LCD display? Or could I go for a 1600 x 1200 which the graphics adapter should (!) be able to cope with? Or, finally, if I went for a 1680 x 1050 widescreen, how would the Nvidia adapter cope? Would the display be as clear as with the 1600 x 1050 screen?

What are the chances of it working at all? I see in the M400 manual that it is supposed to support 2048 x 1536 on an external monitor but this seems to be a problem judging from the other post.

Any help appreciated - thanks

Answer:Portege M200 with external monitor - what's the best resolution?

Well, the screen resolution depends firstly from the graphic card.
If you want to use any display resolution the graphic card must support it. Furthermore the graphic card driver is important. If the graphic card will support the screen resolution BUT the resolution is not listed in the graphic card driver so you will be not able to choose this value.

In my knowledge if you use the docking station you will get supported display resolutions like on the notebook.
The external display resolution depends also on the external monitor. If the monitor hardware will not support the resolution so you will be not able to get any pictures on the external monitor.

I think the best way is to test what resolution is the best. Some people prefers the high resolution with small icons and other ?blind man? ;) loves the low resolutions (1024x768) because of the big icons

I was trying today to connect my Toshiba M800 Laptop to another CRT Monitor with no success.

I am using the Fn + F5 keys, but nothing is happening, I mean a small window pops up that shows me the options LCD, LCD + CRT , CRT, LCD+TV etc, but nothing happens when I choose CRT or LCD + CRT.
I am using a VGA cable, that is ok becouse the same monitor and the same cable works fine when I use my Acer Laptop.

I even downloaded the latest Intel display driver and the latest BIOS update but again nothing...
Any ideas will be most welcome. :)

Hello everybody

On my Portege R500 with Win XP SP3 there is no picture on the external monitor.
The monitor seems to receive the signal but the monitor stays black.

Did someone know a solution for this problem?
Sorry for my bad english.

Thank you.

Answer:Portege R500 - No picture on external monitor

How did you try to output the display on external monitor?
Usually you should use the key combination FN+F5.
This allows you to switch between the both screens; notebook + external screen.

I had a problem displaying an video on the external monitor because the video was running already?. You have to switch to the external display before you would start the movie, etc?

Very annoying problem - every now and then the monitor blacks out for 2 seconds and comes back.

Monitor is powered all the time.
HDMI cable changed twice and does not solve the problem.

Seems like a change of resolution or a reset - can the problem be in the graphic card? Otherwise maybe the HDMI port itself detecting strange stuff?

Please help I'm getting crazy as I work 90% of the time on external monitor.

Answer:Portg Z30-A-1E1 - External monitor blacks out randomly

Two points would be interesting:

1) Notebook model/name
2) Preinstalled system

Furthermore it would be interesting to know if whether the external monitor works properly in connection with another notebook…
Please check it because it could be possible that your external monitor could be affected.

But if it’s not the external monitor issue, I would recommend you to reinstall the graphic card driver as well as to check the monitor functionality using different screen resolutions.

I have an M400 with Vista SP1 installed. Occasionally and seemingly at random the display will become totally corrupted, flickering madly. This has been a 'feature' since before SP1. We have this on more than one individual PC so we're guessing software rather than hardware.

Usually 'sleeping' the PC and waking it back up cures this but it's incredibly frustrating. Has anyone come across this or better still cured it. We think we have latest graphics card drivers but would be willing to try newer ones if known.

Answer:Portege M400 - flickering display

If this issue appears on different computers then it?s definitely a software issue!

Do you have an Intel graphic card? If yes, then remove the installed Intel driver and choose the one from the Toshiba European driver page!

If it doesn?t help then it could be worth to try a graphic driver from the Intel page!

By the way; The Vista SP1 is not supported fully by all drivers. Therefore it?s possible that a SP1 affects the graphic driver and the performance.

I have a Portege M100 - and the Cd Rom drive is not working.

Whenever I put in a disc I can just hear the motor spinning the drive but the computer is not picking up the disc. Device Manager picks up no faults.

There doesn't seem to be any firmware for sorting this (or am I wrong).

I saw a DVD drive for an M400 on ebay and wondered if that would fit my M100.

Before I buy it I wondered if anyone knew if it would be compatible. It seems to be correct dimensions wise, but wondered if my XP Portege M100 would be able to use it.

The description for the drive that I'd like to put into the M100 is below:

I just got myself a lovely used M400 -- shame they don't make displays like that anymore in the new models.

Anyway, it comes with the original German recovery CD. Anyone who still has an English one he would be willing to swap in return for my German one or sell / lend me the CD so that I can make an English basic install? That would be fantastic!

Answer:Portege M400 - Need english recovery CD

Yes, properly someone will change the recovery disk with yours but let me give you a word of advice:

If you need a new recovery disk, contact your local authorized service provider. The guys can get in contact with Toshiba and order such a disk for you. Just ask the guys, it?s always interesting to talk with them a little bit ;)

Alternative you can start XP installation from a normal Microsoft disk. All drivers and tools you will find on Toshiba page.

Hi there,

Last year I've bought the M400 with XP Tablet on it, but though I give my notebook proper maintenance it's become so slow, that only a clean install will work.
So I put the recovery CD in the drive, boot from the cd, choose whatever language (all languages give same error), and want to start the recovery, but then it says that my harddrive is inaccessable/can't find it.

But when I reboot (off the hdd), everything works fine (except it's very slow). I've checked the hdd for errors using HD-tune, no errors. I've deleted all the passwords and fingerprint passwords etc. but nothing seem to help..

Does anyone know how what to do next?

Answer:Re: Portege M400 - Cannot recover - HDD is inaccessable

Did you try to reinstall the OS from Toshiba recovery CD???

Prot?g? M400 supports the RAID.
The RAID needs the RAID driver and without the RAID driver the HDD is not visible for OS setup.

So if you use a clean Windows installation the RAID driver must be included firstly.

Please check also the user manual -> RAID

Recently my laptop has been getting very hot - so have installed speedfan to monitor the temperature.
Currently it is registering :
Temp 1 : 75C
Core1 : 64C
Core2 : 69C

This is under low load and just turned on.
It usually sits arounf 70-80C and all temps have been known to hit 100C.

I presume this is abnormal - what can I check for faults - is it possible to get to the fans or is it likely to be BIOS or Operating System.

Thanks for any help,

Answer:Re: Question about temperature on Portege M400

The CPU temperature of 64C ? 69C is not unusual. The CPU temp can arise up to 100C if the CPU is stressed and works with full performance.
Usually this happen if ?high-performance? application is running.

At the other hand the temperature increases to a higher level because the notebook?s cooling modules don?t run with full performance due to the dust and debris inside the notebook. The dust can affect the notebook?s cooling.

So what to do? the cleaning of cooling modules could help.
You could use a compressed air spray for such jobs? the compressed air spray is a professional cleaning tool which can be purchased from a computer/notebook dealer.

From my own personal experience this helps to get rid of dust and debris and could helps to get a better cooling performance.

My new M400 has come with 512Mb of RAM. According to it can be expanded to 2Gb. I can see how to replace the HDD, but not the memory.
Is it under the keyboard?

Many Thanks.

Answer:How to upgrade the memory on Portege M400?

The memory slots you will find under the keyboard.
Before you will start the upgrade procedure you should shut down the notebook and remove the AC adapter cable and the battery.

1.) Slip you finger under a notch at the end of the keyboard brace and lift up to relase latches and remove the keyboard brace.
2.) Remove the two screws securing the keyboard
3.) Lift up the back of the keyboard, rotate it toward you and lay in face down on the palm rest. (do not touch the keys)
4.) Remove two screws and take off the memory module cover.
5.) Fit the memory modules connectors into the socket at about 45 degree angle and push down until latches on either side snap into place. Align thenotch of the memory modules with that of the memory slot and gently insert the module into the slot.

I have exactly the same problem with a Portege M400.

After an hour or 2 the the fan becomes extremely noisy and the PC freezes. The base of the PC becomes too hot to touch and in fact the Tochiba/Microsoft and barcode stickers on the base have turned brown due to the heat.

The only way to fix the problem seems to be to turn the PC off for 15 minutes of so and reboot.
When this happens I am usually only running outlook, Norton and a browser!!!

This hs been happening for about 6 months. I've cleaned out the fan but this has made no difference - anyone know a fix?

Answer:Portege M400 freezes due to overheating

If you have cleaned the cooling modules and if this didn?t help, then you should get in contact with an local ASP technicians.
Possibly the notebook must be disassembled completely and should be cleaned inside.
This is very tricky procedure! Furthermore the thermal grease which I placed between the CPU and the cooling modules should be renewed.
After a long time of usage, thermal grease becomes dry and cannot channel the warmness created by CPU.

Last but not lease you should use your notebook always on a table. Do use it in bed or lying on the knees. In such case the cooling ventilator would not get enough air and this leads to a higher temperature.

I'm having a problem with CPU temperature in my M400 (Vista OS). When I power up computer, initial temperature is around 35C, but after about 15 minutes of work it jumps to 60C and stays there.

Last night reached 80C and that really concerned me. I tried anything from upgrading BIOS (v3.6) to changing power options in Vista.

I don't know if this is actually funny, but a few days ago I placed a pack of chocolate next to cooler (about 10 centimeters away) and after 5 minutes I noticed it started to melt. :(

Please help! Any suggestion is welcome!

Answer:Portege M400 - High CPU temperature

> I'm having a problem with CPU temperature in my M400 (Vista OS). When I power up computer, initial temperature is around 35C, but after about 15 minutes of work it jumps to 60C and stays there.
60C are nothing unusual. My CPU temperature goes up to 70-90C while gaming or watching DVDs.

Does your notebook shut down automatically? If not then you shouldn?t be worried.
The notebooks support an overheating protection. If the notebook would overheat then the notebook would shut down automatically to prevent the hardware from damage.

At the other hand it would be interesting to know if your cooling modules can run wit full performance. Sometimes the ventilators are clogged and cannot cool the CPU and GPU.

From time to time I clean my ventilators to ensure that the cooling is good enough.

Maybe you should clean the fans too.

Hello here my Problem,

I have bought an older Portegre M400 E, without an HDD. So I buy a new Samsung 400GB. I looked in the Bios (ACPI BIOS Version 3.40) and ok there it is. It shows me the HDD by Built in Assign LD-0 Status Online, Size 400Gb so it seems to be nice. Changed the Raid Array, discribed in the mauel, to Create State 1Raid-0
Then I want to Boot from the Windows XP CD, not recovery my own one.

Windows started up and after a short time the installation ends with the message that there isnt any HDD. This I try sometimes :-( Hope someone can help me.
Remember I didnt have any HDD with dates of the Laptop.

Hi everybody!

I have had this Portege M400 for almost 2.5 years and never encountered such problem.

When I press Power button *HDD led light turns on, then WiFi and then suddenly HDD goes off* and stays that way :(. Optionally, Toshiba logo displays in the mean time. I thought that was HDD problem just to find out that after tilting my laptop 90 degrees HDD led started flashing again. Eventually, when Windows loading animation started it would be "safe" to return to normal position and Windows would start.

Sooo, I assume that the problem is somehow connected to accelerometer, is it? I don't get such freeze-ups after Windows boots. Currently I have BIOS 3.8 version and Windows 7 Pro installed ...

This thing really starts to annoy me - people watch me strangely as I tilt my laptop 90 degrees :-)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Maybe this has something to do with the notebooks HDD?
Maybe the HDD head cannot move properly and the vertical position helps to get the HDD head moving again?
Unfortunately, I have never seen such strange notebook behavior and therefore I can provide just some personal suggestions?.
In my opinion the HDD should be checked at first? maybe the issue could be solved by HDD replacement?

I seem to have misplaced my Recovery CD for Portege Tablet PC. As I understand, the PC came loaded with Windows XP Tablet PC edition.

I only have a CD of XP Pro SP2, will it work if I download and install all the other tools and utilities for this Model from the website?

I have heard that local guys charge extra for giving the CD, isn't it available from a link for download?

Pls advise!!

Answer:Lost Recovery CD of Portege M400

unfortunately you will need the XP Tablet Edition, because there are some features implemented which are needed for tablets (like the support for the tablet screen/stylus pen input, some other tablet related functions) and can not be installed afterwards trough some drivers.

The other thing is, since everybody has to take care of the stuff shipped with the machine you will have to pay for it, if you want a new CD.

That?s like you buy a car and lost the keys, it?s not covered under the warranty and you will have to get a new set of keys.
Regarding the download, I don?t think they place a Windows XP on the website to download. When you buy a toshiba then you buy the windows which is with the machine. So if the place it for download on their site, then people which didn?t purchased such windows will get a windows for free and this is not in the "sense of the inventor" when you know what I mean.

My new M400-103 seems slow. I previously had a other unit & even though it was a solo processor it still compares favourably in speed for instance in booting up to my new machine.
I've seen that part of the problem may lie with all of the util programs that Toshiba load as standard at start-up but surely with the dual-core processor the notebook should still be faster.

I have set power management to FULL POWER etc but this does not make a major difference. I see some of the comments posted mention removing of the Toshiba OS & re-installign Windows XP but I would prefer not to do this & rather tweak the existing OS if possible.

Has anyone else had similar experience. Also the touchpad on the M400 seems more finicky than the other touchpads, maybe I still need to get used to it?

Answer:Portege M400-103 boots up very slow

As you already mentioned in you posting the Toshiba notebooks uses a lot of own applications to control all the features on the notebook.
If you want to use all the notebook features so you need all the applications. That is fact.

In my knowledge the Port?g? supports a lot of ?new generation? applications like rotation utility, Toshiba tablet software, protect suite, HDD protection and so on ?

Of course if you will not use this features you can remove it. I think then the notebook would boot up much faster.
Furthermore on many notebooks the Norton Anti virus is enabled and this utility slows down the booting procedure. This issue appears on my notebook too. The loading of the antivirus application take about 45sec.

Ok, you notebook uses a Dual Core CPU but this is no really a reason for much faster booting.

PS: Do you know a application called ?bootvis? or something like that? This application monitors the booting procedure and is able to make it faster.

I recently tried to upgrade my Portege M400 laptop from the original 512 Mb of ram to 2 Gb (which seems to be possible according to the user's manual.

After I tried to replace the original memory back into the computer the hard drive also failed to recognise that and the laptop had to be restored to the factory settings before windows would load again.

Answer:Portege M400 - Windows 7 doesn't see the HDD

Hi Radzik,

I think Windows doesn?t see the HDD due missing RAID drivers? Windows needs such RAID drivers before you can install it because it doesn?t contain such drivers so the HDD is not recognized. You can download the RAID driver on Toshiba website.

Then you can create a new installation disk using nLite with the drivers or you copy the drivers on an external floppy drive. After booting from Windows XP you have to press F6 key to load the drivers from FDD.

Check this!!!
