How to change the keyboard on Portege M300-101?

Question: How to change the keyboard on Portege M300-101?

Hi,

I've got a Portege M300-101, and I'd love to find out if there are any instructions online for how to change the keyboard itself. Our unit shipped with, I think, a Belgian keyboard installed...and a US keyboard in the box. Are there instructions available for how to switch out the keyboards? Also, I'm guessing that it's a good idea to switch the keyboards before turning on the Notebook for the first time. Do you agree?

Best,

Preferred Solution: How to change the keyboard on Portege M300-101?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to change the keyboard on Portege M300-101?

Hello Danis

Unfortunately there is no public document about that. You can try to do it alone but please don?t forget that on this way valid warranty will be canceled. Basically, the keyboard replacement is not much complicated and technicians need maybe 15 minutes to do that.

In my opinion you can make a risk and pay for replacement before you lose the valid warranty. This Portege is very expensive and by hardware damage it is very risky to be without warranty.

If you still think that you will do it alone write again.

My friend has got a M300 and hes recently been intelligent enough to spill half a cup of coffee onto his laptop keyboard. The first thing is that the laptop does not power on at all even when plugged into the mains so there could be possible component failure. The wierd thing about it is that the orange light for the mains power (second from the left) keeps flashing slowly at me - any ideas on what that could mean?

I havn't tried cleaning the keyboard yet due to lacking in a small enough screwdriver to unscrew it, yet because the laptop doesnt power on anyway i think the problem could be bigger than just that. Is there anything i can do with it or is it just a case of having to buy a new laptop becaue coffee is not covered under warrenty lol

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks J

Answer:Portege M300: orange light flashing after spilling the coffe on the keyboard

Hi James

Obviously there is some problem with hardware and power supply electronic sends a blinking code. Sorry but only solution is to contact service partner because they can read the code and check if there is possible to make something.

Contact them and let them check the unit. They will tell you how much will the repair costs. Portege M300 is expensive unit and I believe that repair will not be cheap.

Good luck!

I have a Portege M300, 40Gb, Windows XP.
I just repartioned my harddisk with Norton Partition Magic.
The result is OK: I now have two drives, both 20Gb. Only one thing went not as I planned. The DVD-drive still is recognized as D: and the new partition has gotten the E: location.

It is just 'a beauty problem', but if I want to switch this, is it possible and how?

I am having Toshiba Portege M300 and trying to format my laptop. When I try to use boot CD (recovery DVD) while booting, though I select 'CD/DVD' option, it s not showing the options of 'formatting the drives', instead it s going to login window. I am having windows XP OS in my laptop.

I am not sure why this problem is coming. Please let me know the option of fixing this issue or option of formatting my laptop without recovery DVD.

Thanks in advance for your time and reply.

Answer:Portege M300 - How can I format the HDD?

Hello

To format the HDD you can use a Microsoft Windows XP CD. You must only boot from it and then you can delete all partitions.
Alternative you can use a HDD format tool. If you search with Google you should find enough results.

As you can see it?s very easy to format the HDD. :)

I would like to know if there will be any difficulty in upgrading Portege M300-101 to Vista? Regards Eiler - Oslo

Answer:Portege M300-101: Can I run Vista on it?

Hi

Portege M300 is pretty new unit and I believe there should not be any problem. Please note that Toshiba doesn?t support Vista at the moment and if you need some drivers you must search for them alone.

The same is with tools and utilities. They are designed for WXP and I really don?t know if they work under Vista.

I will also test Vista on my Satellite Pro M70 soon and see how it works.

Hi,

I'm running an M300 on Advanced Port Replicator II plus. Just recently the Fn F5 (laptop keyborad) and assigned Right Ctrl/Alt/F5 key combos have stopped diplaying the screen selection sequence Laptop/Laptop+External/External. All that happens when I press thise is that the screen toggles between the Laptop and the Laptop and External screem, but crucially the Laptop screen stays on so the Laptop gets very hot.

Two other keys are also not functining - the Presentation Button and Toshiba Assist button - could this be connected in soem way?

Can anyone advise me?

I have just bought a second hand Portege M300 with the built-in CD RW unit. I wondered if anyone has upgraded to DVD RW and which models might fit/ work. I have read somewhere (but I can't find it again!) that there is a "block" on different drives being installed (i.e. the machine won't recognise the new drive if its not factory fitted). Is this true or a cyber-myth?

I asked Technical Support this question but they didn't seem to have a useful answer...

Can I replace my CDRW drive with a DVD RW internal drive?

I know I could buy an external drive relatively cheaply on Ebay, but I would prefer an internal, carry with me type of thing!

Thanks in advance.

Are there other differences between a US-Version and a German-Version of the M700 ?

Answer:Is it possible to change keyboard at Portege M700?

It IS possible and there should be no technical difference between these keyboards. I don?t know if it?s very hard to exchange a keyboard but it shouldn?t be.
Nowadays I would recommend you to refer to an authorized service partner and order this part there. Maybe it would be good to ask them regarding the warranty conditions after replacing such an keyboard by yourself because if you damage something you could loose the warranty on your machine.

P.S.: You can find the nearest available service partner simply by visiting the official toshiba mobile computers website and check the Support section.

Hello.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I purchased a secondhand portege M300 and it's fine - however I couldn't create any recovery discs as the option was not on the Protect and Fix section on Toshiba Assist.
Now I can't play DVD's.

I assume that some kind of reinstall was done but not with the toshiba recovery discs and so I image I can neither play DVD's CD's or burn CD's. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do. Toshiba are sending me recovery discs for the machine and so I am wondering if they would be on those discs and if I should wait until they arrive.

Thank you, regards,

Rachel

Answer:Can't play DVD's on secondhand Portege M300

Hi

Does the drive support the burning function?

You can try to enter the drive properties and select the ?recording? tab.
The function ?enable the recording on this drive? should be marked.

On the Toshiba recovery CD you will find a image with the preinstalled OS and all necessary Toshiba drivers and utilities.
If you want to watch DVDs so you need special software like WinDVD or PowerDVD.
These are DVD player applications. I suppose the WinDVD should be preinstalled on the image.
To burn any CD?s you need also burning software. I would recommend using a Nero.
For me it?s one of the best burning applications.

You should try to use different medias. You should know that not all medias are compatible and supported.

You have bought this notebook as a second hand unit, so it?s possible that the drive is damage. Sometimes if the drive cannot burn or read some medias because of the lens calibration error. In such cases there is no much to do as to replace the drive.

How to install LAN driver?
This is very easy? you can install it in device manager.

First of all you need the right LAN driver.
You can find the Portege M300 drivers on the Toshiba European driver page -> *Archive*

After the LAN driver has been downloaded, you have to unzip this package.
Then access the device manger, choose the unknown device (LAN card) in Network adapters, choose install or update the driver and follow the instruction on the screen.

Hello

I reinstalled my win xp from another xp cd on a portege notebook m300 and did not burn an hdd recovery of the with the windows that thoshiba provided the computer with, its commen today that you burn your own backup instead of they sending you an original win xp cd. I want a backup cd/recovery cd now and I see that they partioned(or what its called) a seperate 2,5GB hd with the name "HDDRECOVERY".

This resulted that my windows got installed on E: cause it was a 2,5GB partioned HDspace that windows called C: and I could only pick E: to install win xp to and I didnt want to erase the 2,5gb partioned space. I toughed that I somehow could access this 2,5gb HD file but it dosen?t show in "my conputer" only in the disk managment tools windows have. You cant do anything in this manegmant tool to get it to show in "my computer". I would like to access this space and burn this HDDRecoveryfile so I can get my propriate windows that followed when I bought the computer since the win xp serial that is supplied under this cumputer did not work with my new win xp cd.

ps. How do you install windows on C: if the windows install program thinks C: is the 2,5gb partioned file? I dont want to delete it.

Answer:HDD recovery from a partition on Portege M300

Hello Andre

The situation with Portege M300 is a little bit complicated but I will try to explain you. Portege M300 (I think just in Germany) is delivered without Recovery DVD and also without Tools & Utilities CD. Both of them can be created by user but only if unit is factory preinstalled. The factory preinstalled unit with factory image contains one tool called ?Recovery Disc Creator?. Using this tool you can create both medias. Without this tool there is no way to make it.

Unfortunately this tool you can not find on Toshiba download page. Because of that you can keep this partition on the HDD but it has no sense at all. You have your own preinstalled OS without ?Recovery Disc Creator?.

There are two solutions:
1. You can format whole HDD, create own partitions and install own OS using all stuff you can find on Toshiba download page.
2. Contact please authorized service partner in your country. They can try to order original recovery DVD for you. If this recovery DVD is not available the service partner can make factory settings again but with costs.

That?s all I know about Portege M300 and preinstalled software. If you have more questions please write again.

Good luck!

Hi,

Wonder how long does your batterys last on your Portege M300? Mine lasts for about 4-4,5 h with "normal" use.

What is the difference in battery life between the standard battery and the hi capacity battery?

Answer:Battery life on Portege M300

Hi

Simple answer: The Hi capacity batteries run longer. But you should only use the original Toshiba batteries which are developed and designed for this unit. Other batteries can damage the unit!!!

There are several steps you can take to insure that you get maximum performance from the battery:
New batteries come in a discharged condition and must be fully charged before use. It is recommended that you fully charge and discharge the new battery two to four times to allow it to reach its maximum rated capacity.
Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries which do not suffer from the memory effect.
To get maximum performance from the battery, fully optimize the notebooks power management features prior to use

I have found this useful site with many informations about batteries:
http://www.batterymart.com/battery_faq.php
Pleas check this side.

Dear All,

I have a Portege M300 which i bought around 3 or 4 years ago and i am very happy with and with no problems. The laptop originally came with a 60GB and i wanted to upgrade it to one with a larger capacity, one of 160GB! My laptop has around 1.2Gb Ram and runs on windows XP SP3.

I recently bought a Samsung HD-160 (160GB) which should be compatible with my laptop. After installing it from scratch and used it for about 2 weeks, the computer suddenly stopped. The HDD stopped spinning and an ERROR#0 came up every time i tried to restart. There was NO WAY the HDD would spin again so i contacted Samsung and they replaced it. The HDD did have a slight smell of component burning, but very slight.
I replaced the malfunctioned HDD with a 2nd replacement and to my disbelief, the SAME THING happened again just after 3 hours of use!!! I contacted Samsung and once again they will be sending me a replacement, with the same type of harddisk. I have tried to get some explanation from both Toshiba and Samsung for why this is happening but so far i have no explanation.
Without hesitation i put back my original 60GB Toshiba drive that luckily still had my documents and the laptop is happy again touch wood.

What am i doing wrong? can some one help me please get to the bottom of this so i don't suffer the same problem with my 3rd replacement? I wish to have a bigger harddrive on my laptop and i believe all of them should be compatible. I did buy one that should be compatible wi... Read more

Answer:Portege M300 - HDD replacement failed

Portege M300 is pretty old notebook and maybe you should be careful with these upgrades.
According notebook specification your notebook can handle with 100GB HDDs but I am pretty sure you can use 120GB as well.

So maybe you should try to upgrade HDD with 120 GB HDD to see if everything will be OK. I also believe 120 GB is enough and you will have enough free space for data saving.
What do you think about it?

I've recently bought Toshiba Portege M300. When I opened the box I only noticed one CD titled Additional Software that contains DVD-RAM Driver and WinDVD Creator. The rest of the software is on the hard disc. There is no Windows XP CD or recovery CD. Is this a normal situation or should I have any additional CD's?

Answer:Portege M300 - included software

Hi

that's quite normal for the M300.You can make the recoveries yourself. There is a nice tool included in the installation to make the recoveries either on a DVD or a set of CD's.

There is a hidden partition on the HDD where the images of the recovery is located. You have the possibility to recover the unit also from that partition, but I would recommend to have the seperate medias as backup!

I replaced the hard disk on my Toshiba Portege M300 notebook for a larger disk last week. It was working fine for a coupe of days but when i tried plugging the original hard disk back in (to copy some data to a network share which i forgot to transfer to the new hard disk) it failed to see the disk. I tried attaching the new disk and it no longer sees this either.

I've tested the original and new hard disk on a different laptop and they work so i can only asume the Portege has a faulty ide controller or ide cable. No matter which hdd i attach the laptop trys to boot from cd, skips the hdd and trys the PXE network card. The bios also states theres no hdd attached too.

Firstly, if the cdrom still works am i correct in thinking the ide controller is still working?

Secondly could someone suggest where i can purchase an ide cable for an M300 as its a circuit printed ribbion which i've never seen before. I'm guessing its a Toshiba customised part?

Answer:Need guideline how creating a recovery CD on Portege M300

I don?t know what the problem is.
Go to the Toshiba Assist and select the Protect & Fix tab.
There you will find the option ?Recovery disk creator?

Then if you want to do ?recovery CD? and ?Tools & Utility? so you have to mark it.
(When using the CD it?s necessary to use the CDs with 80min 700MB storage capacity)

After selecting of the CD or DVD and product recovery you have simply burn the medias.

That its.

Possibly it?s only a OS issue? I mean it?s possible that your OS is muddled up and therefore some functions don?t work as it should?

At the other hand a hardware issue (i.e. HDD, memory) could be also possible.
But first of all if would be interesting to know if the notebook would functions after recovering.

Hello,

I've used the "SD Memory Card Format" utility preinstalled on my Portege M300 notebook to format a 2gb SD card (as per Toshiba's recommendation). The operation was succsesful, but the card can no longer be read (it appears to have a RAW file system). Furthermore, trying to put a FAT or FAT32 partition on it using the windows format utility results in a partition of just 1GB instead of 2GB!

The card had a 2gb FAT partition and worked flawlessly prior to using the Toshiba utility. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there anything I can do to restore the card to it's original capacity?

Thanks

Answer:Portege M300: SD card format issue - 1GB instead of 2GB

Hi

Are you 100% sure that this is a SD card and not another one like MMC for example?
The Toshiba utility supports only SD cards!
How did you format the SD card?
As far as I know there are two different format options:
Quick format - deletes only the directory structure
Full format ? the whole SD-card will be deleted
This utility formats SD memory card to the SD standard format.

The other possibility is that you have used the Toshiba SD memory Boot utility
This is a utility which can create a SD memory card to a boot disk. As far as I know this use the RAW file system.

Hi,

I have starteg getting random crashes when trying to open Word and other documents.

The Microsoft Online Crash Analaysis tells me that I should update my graphics driver. This is an Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller, and the Intel site shows updates available. Intel also warn you that some manufacturers customise this driver, so to chack before updating.

There is no driver update shown on the Tosh site.

Question: Is it safe to update from the Intel website?

Thanks, Richard

Answer:Portege M300 - Updating Graphics Driver

Well, I have checked the Toshiba driver site and the graphic driver for M300 was released at 28/01/05. The available version was 6.14.103937.

I have read many postings here in the forum about the graphic drivers and it seems that generally it?s advisable to use the Toshiba graphic drivers but I think you can also try to install the Intel graphic driver.

I have a Toshiba Portege M300 and as I understand, it came with a recovery disk creator, however I seem to have lost that program. Where am I able to get this again, as I do not see it listed on any of the Toshiba support websites?

Answer:Portege M300 Recovery Disc Creator - Where can I get it?

Hi

I?m not sure if you will be able to order it since the Portege M300 is an older series.
Usually this page should be used to get the recovery disk for Toshiba notebooks:
https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

But as mentioned above, older notebooks are not supported.

You could also ask your ASP for such disk? maybe they could help you? otherwise you will need and genuine Microsoft Windows CD and the drivers could be downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page!

PS: you have to choose Archive in driver download form!

In my opinion it should works.

But if not so you should install the drivers. As far as I know the Tools& utilities CD was delivered with the unit. Check it for the drivers.

Hi

Usually if the WLan driver was not installed then the WLan card should still appear in device manager as a unknown device?

Can you see an unknown device?
Not?

Well, for me this means that the Wlan card is not inserted or it malfunctions?

In your case I would install a hardware diagnostic tool like Everest Home Edition in order to find out if a WLan card is there.

Am I missing a driver?

Answer:Can not use Compact Flash drive on Portege M300

Hello

Is your unit preinstalled with Toshiba created recovery DVD? Do you have the same problem with SD card?

In users manuals is there is written: You can not use CF that does not confirm to CF Association specification.

Try to use different cards. If the unit is preinstalled with Toshiba image all necessary drivers are installed and it must works properly. If not it is probably because of CF card.

Hello everybody,

I'm Italian and I had some problems with a Portege M300. After Windows XP crash I made a new installation of XP but, of course, I lost every driver. I tried to install them but I can't do it 'cause there's not the Toshiba common modules installed.

I downloaded it but when I try to click on the setup icon nothing happens, and when I try to install other drivers same message appear (of missing common modules).
How can I solve this problem?

Thanks a lot

My notebook is becoming fairly slow - can I add more RAM to speed up? I am told that Norton antivirus is slowing down the computer - is this correct?

Kristian

Answer:Slow Portege M300 -> memory upgrade?

Of course? You could upgrade the memory to max 1280MB because there is only one slot upgradeable? the notebook has an internal 256MB memory and this cannot be removed.

You?re also right with the suggestion about the Norton antivirus? I have had installed this program along time ago and I was disappointed. The application made my notebook OS slow like a turtle.
Since several months I use a freeware antivirus application and I?m very satisfied.

Hi,

I am in the process of upgrading my Portege M300 with a bigger hdd, as can be seen from the Portege forum, as i posted thread after two hdd from samsung failed in the same way shortly after installing from new.

I want to simply know if the Toshiba utility HDD protection is simply made for Toshiba branded hdd or whether it can function on any other brands of hdd. As i say i want to upgrade from a 60Gb to a 160 Gb and 2 new hdd failed. I have since upgraded my bios to the latest version and am i also considering not installing this hdd protection feature just in case it will cause problems once agian with my 3rd replacement hdd of the same kind.

i appreciate any thoughts on this.
Many thanks
C

Answer:Portege M300: Is HDD protection only for Toshiba branded HDDs?

Hi

Usually it?s no matter what manufacturer it is.
If the HDD supports SMART then it should be possible to use such HDD.
The HDD protection tool checks the parameters of HDD.
But the parameters are configured by HDD manufacture? so it could be possible that the HDD will not function if the tool would not select the parameters correctly.

Answer:Portege M300 hangs after "Windows shuts down" comes up on the screen

Hi

Does it happen after the OS installation from the Toshiba recovery CD???
Did you install any further programs???

I have noticed a similar freezing on my notebook. Mostly it happened because the background process did not close and therefore the notebook could not force the shut down. In my case it was a adobe acrobat reader which could not close.

I think you should defragment you HDD and use the ?CCleaner? freeware application.
This program cleans program errors and corrects the registry entries.

Try it! Maybe it?s not a serious issue!

Answer:Portege M300 Recovery (operating system) help required

Hi there,

it?s unplausible that no recovery cd was delivered with your machine. Your machine was not one of these glorious Vista/Xp machines with an HDD recovery.
So, you better find the CD because the only choices you have is

- to pay for a new recovery by asking an authorized service partner
- to pay for a Windows XP tablet edition and download all drivers
- to pay nothing and try to work with linux
- to pay nothing because you found the CD

So, you see your choices and there are not many. Grab a hand full of luck and prey that you find the CD, otherwise you will have to pay.

Portege M300 Model PPM30A-02E001.
At some stage when a Sony Camera was installed I lost access to my hidden partition (HDDRECOVERY) from which I can make recovery disks.

I can see it in disk management tools but the link to it is missing.

Is there any way I can re establish the link? The icon for "make recovery disks" has gone as well.

Please.

Answer:Portege M300 (PPM30A) - Lost access to HDD recovery

Hi

Wait a moment, please: Why you write about HDD recovery on the hidden partition? I think you mixed up something!
On Vista and Windows 7 there is a hidden partition but it has nothing to do with the HDDrecovery option from Toshiba. This on the hidden partition is a Windows feature, also called ?Windows Recover Environment?!!!

Normally the HDDrecovery files are stored on the second partition in a folder of the same name. Can you access the second partition?

If not I think the only chance is ordering a new recovery disk. Therefore you should contact the authorized service provider in your country.

Hi,

just curious if you have any experience with creating dual boot of Windows XP on M300. (Reason is that I need second OS to boot immediately if one crashes, which happened to me).

I failed to create stable systems. There's no problem installing them separately on 2 partitions (I am aware that BIOS has 128GB boundary limit, so they are 12Gb and 221GB large, on 250GB drive). But after one or two restarts, second partition's starts to crash on blue screen, or says "Missing hal.dll" and so on.

I reinstalled it like 15 times, tried various setups, changed boot.ini, mbr code, windows recovery console, NTFS or FAT32 partitions, boot managers, recovered from Toshiba CD's, installed from I386 with windows key, but the trouble is that second windows installation last just for 2 months at maximum. Then again - "missing \system32\DRIVERS\psi.sys, missing \system32\DRIVERS\system, missing \system\DRIVERS\hal.dll"....

Any suggestion is welcomed.

Answer:Portege M300: Creating dual boot (twice Windows XP Pro)

Hi

As far as I know the Portege M300 supports the IDE ATA 6 HDD interface.
Since this interface supports LBA 48bit you should be able to use a bigger HDD sizes as 250GB.

Anyway, did you try to create a smaller partition and to reinstall the OS?
Check this.

Furthermore I've found out that this notebook supports an internal memory.
It looks like there is 256MB of internal memory...

However, I searched and little bit for some similar problems and the error messages like:
missing hal.dll or missing \system32\DRIVERS\system or missing \system32\DRIVERS\psi.sys are mostly related to a hardware issue; a faulty HDD or faulty memory could causes such issues too.

I think about bad HDD sectors or something like that...

I've recently had to reimage my M300, and have re-installed the latest version of all of the drivers, but am left with two problems.

1. Even though the Wireless Hotkey utility is installed (and the process is running in memory), when I press Fn+F8, when the wireless switch is on, nothing happens. When the switch is off and I press it I get the message "Wireless communication is disabled. Please turn on the wireless communication switch", so the driver is definitely running. I've seen a similar error in a Satellite forum indicating a change is needed to the registry.ini file. Any ideas anyone?

2. The Power Saver tool (Fn+F2) works fine until I try to change profiles using the Fn+F2 key, when it crashes the Power Saver tool with a fatal error, and it can't be restarted without rebooting. Again - any ideas?

Answer:Portege M300: FN+F8 not working & FN+F2 kills Power Saver

Hi Mark

In my opinion there is no general answer for such problems.
I assume all worked fine until you have reinstalled all the drivers. Am I right?

I think the driver installation is a key for the problem solving.
Believe me, I have installed the drivers on my Satellite many times and for the first time not all functions has worked because I have installed the drivers in the wrong order.
After new installation all was properly.

So, try to do it again? Did you download the drivers it from the Toshiba site? You should find there an installation instruction? I hope so.
Take a look into this document and try to follow this guide line

Almost every LCD monitor is using refresh rate of 60Hz. Same goes with notebooks. There's no need to for better refresh rate as it's needed with CRT monitors. Hi there.

I have a Toshiba M300 Portege that I have had from new in 2006. It has got progressively slower over the years so yesterday I thought I would use the product recovery CD to reinstall the factory settings.

Put the CD in, restarted with F12, selected the CD drive, followed the onscreen instructions, it went through the unpacking process....but once it finished and re-started you get the Toshiba welcome screen then it looks like it's going to start but it just hangs with a blank screen...nothing not even a flashing cursor.

The hard drive does not even appear to be spinning either?
I have tried this process now 6 times and am beginning to pull my hair out!!

Anyone got any ideas?

Answer:Product Recovery completed - Toshiba Portege M300 won't boot

> The hard drive does not even appear to be spinning either?
Well, it looks like a HDD is faulty.
The blinking cursor is a typical sign of HDD malfunction.
I think you should replace the HDD and should reinstall the OS once again?

Good luck

For example the infoTool can locate the malfunction.
You can also try to use the Nero Driver-CleanTool.exe and RegistryChecker.exe

However, this is a 3rd party applications and I think you should ask the Nero support for the help.

Today I found this page in Toshiba Spain website: http://es.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/generic/BATTERY_PROGRAM_2 , and my battery is affected.

I called Toshiba and surprisingly the answer has been: *Yes, your battery is included but we no longer change them. If it has worked for some time then it should not fail.*

I have read many times the information in the mentioned web page and *I can't find the established period for the change*, and the most important thing is *it encourage me to remove the battery to prevent damages.*

I was expecting something else from Toshiba.

Answer:Portege M300 battery included in Battery Program

I believe you. Customers like you and me have always right and must get everything they want.
Hey battery of my notebook was affected too and it was changed 3 years ago. At this time the whole exchange program was ongoing.

Sorry but after so long period of time I presume the whole exchange program is at the end and out of date.
If you didn't have any problems with the battery in the past I don't think you will have it in the future.
When you will notice the battery is at the end by new one and everything will be OK.

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

Answer:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Hi

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

Hi,

As we know it is very easy to change the RAM memory or SSD drive in the Portege R700-930 series.
It is a little more complicated for the Z-series.

I just wanted to know if this is at all possible for the new Z10t series??
The standard items of 4G and 128G are a little to small for my taste.

Thanks,

Answer:Change SSD or RAM in Portege Z10t??

Hi

I think the upgrade on Portege Z10T is a different story and not comparable with the other series like Portege R700.

The Portege Z10T is an mix of tablet / netbook device and mSATA SSD drive is placed within the tablet which is not user upgradable.

If 128GB are not enough for you, you can insert and use additional Memory media in the SD Card slot

I have just purchased a Portege M750 laptop which came preinstalled with Vista Business 32bit and seperate XP tablet on a recovery disc.

I am looking to resinstall with 64bit Vista business, then install the XP as part of a dual boot system to take full advantage of the 4GB already installed and further memory expansion in the future.

My question is this: Although the Toshiba drivers download page does not specifically list a Vista 64 bit OS, has anyone carried out a similar OS change on a portege/or different laptop and had any incompatabilty with the 32bit drivers and applications? If so, which drivers/features were problematic afterwards.

Does the "Toshiba" folder in the C:\ directory of laptop contain all the drivers and setup files required or would these all have to be downloaded from the website.

Thanks

Answer:Portege M750 - Change from 32-bit to 64-bit

Hi

Usually the 32bit divers are designed and created only for 32bit OS and usually they would not run on 64bit OS. But who knows, maybe some single drivers would be compatible with 64bit but this is more as questionable.

> Does the "Toshiba" folder in the C:\ directory of laptop contain all the drivers and setup files required or would these all have to be downloaded from the website.
Usually all Toshiba drivers could be downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page.
The Toshiba folder on C may contains only the installed tools and software.

Page 3 of BIOS setup: I need to change the state from JBOD to 1raid-0. I hit execute command and I get a warning that I will have to reinstall the OS. Hit spacebar to proceed and it wants me to type a key string which is written in the manual.

What is the key string that it is looking for?

Tech support could not tell me and the downloadable users guide does not describe this.

Thanks

Hi everyone,
I have a problem here with my touch pad settings.
May I know how can I change the settings of my touch pad?

Answer:How to change Touchpad settings on Portege R500

The touchpad settings can be changed in the control panel -> moue.

There you should check the single tab.
On my notebook the tab called ?device settings? provides an option to access to the touchpad Synaptic settings.

Check this!

I recently acquired a portege 3480 with xp installed.
I have searched high and low and can not find a method
for changing the display brightness. Anyone Anyone? Bueler?

Answer:Portege 3480: How to change display brightness

Hello,

did you already tried the fn-key combination? I am not sure how it is with your portege but it should be like FN-F6 and FN-F7 for changing the display brightness.
Unfortunately there are no XP-drivers (or just the sound driver) for that machine to change it manually.
You should try the FN-Key combination, there should be a sign which looks like a little "sun" with an up/down arrow in front of.

Changing the BIOS setting for Portege S100 from JBOD to RAID0, I hit space on Exectute Creation and enter the string key in the manual and press "enter".
The settings then return to existing settings and not the new RAID0 setting I selected.

I have been at this most of the day / evening looking at various posts, but I can see nothing wrong with the details entered.

It is the same as recorded in this link:-
[How to Change the RAID configuration|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB6901K60006R01.htm]

I am now at the end of my tether, I only wanted to install new WD HDD and do fresh install of XP Pro, is that too much to ask?

Answer:Portege S100: How to change the RAID in the BIOS

Did you enter "1234" as the confirmation code when you changed the RAID setting?

This code can be found in the users manual :)

I have a Port?g? R30-A-19Q, ref. PT341E-07D044FR, running under Win 10.
Trying to install a Samsung 2To SSD 850 Evo, I hit the following difficulty.

1) Samsung delivers the SSD with no cable, so I bought an Inateck USB 3.0 external casing for SSD 2,5 SATA-I II III HDD with USB3.0 cable

2) Neither the Samsung Magician software, nor Win 10 recognized the external storage device,

3) Digging further, I found that the SATA parameters need to be changed from IDE to AHCI, which normally is feasible from the BIOS screen,

4) Since my BIOS did not offer this possibility, I went to the register, in order to modifiy directly the following key :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > msahci.

5) The above key not being present in my Win 10 register, I may need to reinstall Win 10 (?).

Before I do this, I would like to know from someone who can access the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > msahci,
from his/her Win 10 register, the exhaustive list of settings/values it normally includes.
I may try and copy this into my own register and try it.

Otherwise (maybe this si where I should have started), does anybody know if the
Port?g? R30-A-19Q motherboard incudes the possibility to run SATA in AHCI mode?

Thanks,

Answer:Portg R30-A-19Q Win 10 : How to change SATA parameters from IDE to AHCI ?

What is the Boot Mode set to in the BIOS?

If its set to UEFI Boot Mode then AHCI will already be enabled.
Compatibility mode only works in CSM Boot Mode.

If you download and install the latest Intel Rapid Storage driver from www.intel.com does that resolve the problem?

Can someone tell me where can i find the changelog for BIOS update 4.50-WIN(ECB1.40)?
Thank you.

Answer:Portege R30-A Bios Update change log (4.50-WIN (ECB1.40)

Toshiba EU BIOS page does not provide any change log details.
But on Toshiba US driver page you can check such information.

The BIOS version seems to be the same:

I recently bought a Portege 3500 without any support disks etc. It does not have a CD or floppy disk. It has 2 problems I would like to fix.
a) The HDD is obviously on its way out as it is clicking at me and it shows a permanent red section on the defrag.
b) The fans are on full power all the time and the CPU is running slowly.

a) I got a new HDD which I reformatted on other notebook. I put a basic Windows XP on this HDD and transferred it to my external holder which I attached to the Portege. I used 'Transfer... Wizard' to transfer files, folders and settings to the new HDD but I do not know how to install the old Windows Tablet XP OS to it. I have the Microsoft Product Key for the OS. Any suggestions would be helpful.

b) I reckon the heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink is failing, causing the CPU to run hot and therefore slower. I previously solved the same problem with a Dell by coating the top of the CPU with Artic Silver 5 paste. I am unable however to get at the CPU in the Portege even though I have removed all screws at the bottom. Does anyone know how to split the case without causing damage?

Answer:Portege 3500 - change HDD and treat overheating CPU

Hi

a) Unfortunately but I really don?t know how you want to install the OS without using the recovery CD or windows CD.
I have searched a little bit in this forum and found these posts about OS installation on the Port?g? 3500:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=5926
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=15336&messageID=55939

Check also this FAQ:
http://support.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB6101CA000ER02.htm

b) On the Port?g? you should find the Power saver utility. This utility allows you to change the different cooling modes and the processing speed.
In my opinion you should also check if the ventilators are clean. Mostly the dust and debris inside of notebook is responsible for the not properly cooling of the CPU and other parts.

But if you want to know how to remove the covers so I would recommend checking this site. Maybe you will find something useful.

Hello

I need to change my internal SSD 225GB to a SSD 512GB!

What do I have to do on hardware and software level?
Can I take any SSD?

Thanks for help?

Regards, Florence

Answer:Portege R830-10v / i7 / Change internal SSD 225GB

The HDD or SSD drive upgrade does not require any particular changes in the software or hardware.
You need a compatible 2.5? SATA SSD drive.

Here is an nice and very useful document how to upgrade / replace the HDD or SSD drive in the Portege R830 & Satellite R830 series.

http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/CRU18037E0000R01.htm

Of course, after such upgrade, you will need to install the system again? the best choice would be the usage or recovery disk and to recover the notebook to the factory settings.

It will be interesting to know since when this problem occur. On this way it is not easy to say what the problem can be but it seems to be that your keyboard is defective. You can contact service partner and let them check the unit.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

I spilled water on the keyboard of my Portege Z30-A-10W (it's backlit) and some of the keys don't work. Where can a replacement keyboard (backlit with UK layout) be bought online?

Thanks in advance,
M

Answer:Portege Z30 - where to get replacement keyboard?

In my opinion the question is: who should exchange the keyboard?
Best option for you is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can order original keyboard for your machine and exchange it for you.

If you want to do this alone it can be risky, small mistake and you can damage something. Anyway, every keyboard at the back side has part number that can help you to find it Goolging around.

Hi.

I've just bought Portege Z30-b.

I want to replace windows with linux (fedora I think), I've made windows image using Recovery Media creator on USB stick.

So if now I will install linux i will delete all files from SSD.
Maybe in futture i would like to use windows again, can I revert back to original state using this USB stick ?

If I would install this linux, what happens with toshiba tools accessed from BIOS/UEFI ?

From where I can get windows CDkey ?

Thanks for help !

BTW: great laptop !

Answer:Portege Z30-B - Toshiba image installation after change to Linux

can I revert back to original state using this USB stick ?

Yes, recovery would set the notebook back to factory settings.

If I would install this Linux, what happens with Toshiba tools accessed from BIOS/UEFI?

I’m afraid I’m not quite sure what you mean exactly with Toshiba tools accessed from BIOS…

Toshiba tools don’t support Linux… you can install Linux but Toshiba software would not run. But you can still access the BIOS press F2 button while powering On the unit

Hi all,

Is it possible to remotely change a Toshiba Portege R700 BIOS? - More specifically change the boot order to PXE boot (instead of HDD).

I plan to deploy images to our laptops using SCCM 2007 but need a utility to change the BIOS settings. HP and Dell both allow you to do this, does Toshiba?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Portege R700 - Change boot order remotely

Hey,

As far as I know it?s not possible to change BIOS settings remotley but what you can do is using a the remote connection of Windows or another Windows based remote program and then use the preinstalled Toshiba tool ?HWsetup?. That?s Windows based BIOS configuration tool where you can change the boot order and other BIOS options.

This should work! :)

I installed the webcam driver for the M700 and each time I install it, I recieve the same error message:

"Webcam driver open fail - Please restart camera or computer."

I've reinstalled the drivers numerous times, and it still doesn't work.

Therefore, I tried the msconfig method, and disabled all start up processes, and then reenabled them.

The webcam displays the same error message, and now the screen wont change orientation when I swivel the screen.

Answer:Portege M700 wont change screen orientation

Do you try to use WXP or what? Usually every notebook is delivered with preinstalled and well configured operating system.

I put Fujitsu SATA HDD into Portege S100-s1133 than in the BIOS settings at raid array section I couldn't able to change built in hard drive form JBOD to 1RAID-0. When I made that change in BIOS it could not recognize the RAID drive so I could not install OS.

If anyone knows about this issue could you please help me?

Answer:Portege S100: Not able to change JBOD to 1RAID-0 after HDD replacement

Hi

Before you will install the OS you will have to implement the RAID driver.
The RAID driver you will find on the Toshiba driver page!!!

Download it and save it on the FDD disk. Then connect the external FDD USB drive to the notebook. During the OS installation setup will ask you for a raid driver installation. As far as I can remember you need to press the S button.

But may I ask you what CD you use??? If you use the recovery CD you don?t need to install the RAID driver additionally because this driver already exists on the CD.
It?s only needed if you will install the OS from the original Microsoft OS CD

PS: Please check also you user manual. There is everything described in the simply way ;)

Hello everybody ,

I get a Toshiba Portege R500-10J , with the keyboard QWERTY .
I want to change it with the keyboard AZERTY, because I use usually French.

But I don't find on the net the explanation or details for doing this .
Somebody get some pictures or some advice for change the keyboard of this laptop.

Thanks

Answer:How can I exchange the keyboard on Portege R500?

Do you really want to replace it by yourself and to lose the warranty validity???
The Port?g? R500 is a great business notebook and I think it?s not the cheapest one.

In your case I would not risk to lose the warranty.
Therefore ask the Toshiba service provider in your country for a compatible keyboard with the AZERY layout and for the replacement.

I think it?s safer.

Hello;

I had the keyboard pretty bad and I took it to be changed, but when I brought it back home, we realized that it was not the same as it had before. His explanation was that the original would be much more expensive ... but it does not match the volume keys or many others and also sinks a lot in the center when writing.

Anyone know how much it can cost an original keyboard of this model to replace it ??

I would like to put a claim but I want to have all the details first.

Thank you in advance for your help.
