Preferred Solution: Re: BIOS upgrade for a Portege R500

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Re: BIOS upgrade for a Portege R500

Firstly; it?s necessary to update the BIOS?
Is something wrong with your notebook?

Secondly; the BIOS which can be found on the Toshiba European driver page can be updated only from running Windows OS.
Therefore you will have to install Windows if you want to update the BIOS.

I found my old laptop, but can't boot it - forgot BIOS password. CMOS battery disconnection didn't helped.
Local support asked me go to offline service, but they want too much money for unlocking - this laptop is now cheaper himself.
USA support asked me write here
May be somebody can help to generate unlock response code?
Model is Portege R500 PPR50E-06W012RU

Answer:Portege R500 BIOS password

BIOS protection is very important feature for protection so it cannot be discussed in public forum.
If someone writes here how you can remove BIOS password every stolen Portege R500 can be unlocked.

I know it costs a bit but this should be done by Authorized service provider.

I was looking at the 1.60-WIN BIOS update available on the download pages since 25/03/08.

Anybody know what the update does?
The explanation on the download page just says: +"This Bios Update adds increased functionality to your system."+

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Portege R500 BIOS update 1.60-WIN

The change-log on the US site says:

Version 1.60 - 2008-03-19

I've got a Port?g? R500-S5006V with a 64GB SSD installed.
Currently I've got space problems, but still so happy with this lovely computer I don't want to replace it.

Is it possible to upgrade to a larger SSD drive? What kind of drives are compatible?
Do I have to send it to Toshiba, or can a regular computer service workshop do this for me?

Answer:Portege R500 and SSD upgrade

I believe the SSD in that machine is not a standard 2.5" SATA or IDE Drive, it is 1.8" and has a ZIF connector and runs as an IDE device.

Do a google search for "SSD ZIF IDE" and you will find some drives that may be compatible. In theory they should work in the R500 but I am not 100% sure.

An ASP can install it for you for a fee.

Hello Every Body.
I have just registered on the forum and I would like to request help from the forum members.
The help that I would like to request is about adding RAM Memory to my Notebook A Toshiba Portege R500.
The main reason for this request is because today I went to a computer shop and one of the technicians attempted to install 4GB RAM memory into my Notebook but it could not be done, when the new Memory was installed my notebook would not start.

I have a PORTEGE R500 bought in 2007, SERIAL NO.48025469H.

I have obvious problems with VISTA and with WINDOWS 7. Both are not working well because it seems to have insufficient memory. I’m wondering if I can increase the memory and replace the disk with an SSD. I want to keep this notebook because it is perfect for all my needs.

Answer:Portege R500 - RAM and SSD upgrade

According notebook specification your notebook can handle with ?GB RAM but was delivered with 2GB so memory upgrade is not possible.

What to say about SSD? SSD upgrade is possible and you can use 256GB SSD for upgrade. After doing this system will be much faster and you will get definitely more performance and ?speed?.

Thought I would post a new thread as the old one seems to be dead...

I just want to know if anyone has been able to use a Portege R500 CPU virtualization extensions, whether in Linux, Windows or any other OS. I guess this will become a mainstream requirement with windows 7 now out.

If you have been able to use this, could you please post your exact laptop model (it should be on a sticker on the bottom)

This was my original post, showing that the CPU should support his:

I hav a Portege R500 (or equivalent model, bought in Japan), BIOS v 1.60 and whenever I try to use applications that support virtualisation extensions I am unable to. I am using linux as my OS, and it tells me that virtualization extensions have been disabled by the BIOS.

However, I can't find an option for this in the BIOS! According to the r500 manual (available form the toshiba support area), there should be an option, right after 'core multi-processing', which I can see:

Virtualization Technology
Virtualization Technology sets enable or disable of the Intel Virtualization
Technology installed in the CPU.
Intel Virtualization Technology is the technique that allows one machine to
operate as multiple virtual machines.
The Virtualization Technology is supported with some models.
The Disabled command does not allow use of the Intel Virtualization
The Enabled command allows use of the Intel Virtualization Technology.

Answer:No Virtualization option in BIOS with Portege R500

Are you sure there is NO Virtualization option in BIOS?
Did you check all the pages???

I found your other thread about password clearing and you said that this doesn?t work but finally it worked? maybe you should check the VT option again!

Furthermore as you said, the CPU has to support the VT in order to have a VT option in BIOS? The Intel Core 2 Duo processor ULV U7600 support VT.

As far as I know there are also some notebook series where the VT option is not available in the BIOS but if the CPU supports the VT then VT is enabled by default even than the VT option is not present in BIOS.

I want to update the bios of my Portege R500 to the 1.6 version. It's a windows-update BIOS and when I launch it under Windows 7, I get the message:
[Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsupported OS or service pack is installed.

I have to reinstall XP in order to update the Bios? File name is P0058v160.exe. Does anyone know if BIOS update works in Virtualisation mode? I would install Sunbox VM, install XP and run the BIOS update. But will it work?

Does anyone has an idea?

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

Can I upgrade proceror and RAM in my R500?
Is possible?? If yes, how procesor can i used?

Answer:Portege R500 - Upgrade procesor and RAM

hi RoboS,
first of all the modell number is needed to check which hardware is in the machine.

to upgrade ram: easy - there should be a door marked with a ram-symbol on the bottom of the machine. open up and insert more memory
make sure that the system is powerless: remove ac-adapter and battery!
make also sure that the new ram modules meets the specifications.

upgrade the cpu: much more difficult and toshiba dont support this upgrade...
search for your modeltype with a bigger cpu and check if it has a socket (should be), this cpu should go together with your machine...

but remember: double the ram isnt that expensive than upgrade cpu and you have more fun with a bigger amount auf ram than a bit faster cpu....

I have a Portege R500 model PPR50E with Vista Business pre-installed. I am wanting to move to Windows 7 and so, as a first step I want to update the BIOS from 1.5 to 1.6. I obtained the correct file from Toshiba (bios-20080325071859 containing P0058v160.exe), but when I try to run the application it fails with "This computer is not supported".
I have checked several times that I downloaded the file for the R500....

Can anyone help?

Answer:Cannot make BIOS update for Portege R500 (PPR50E)

That?s strange.
Did you change something on you installed Vista?

In different cases the BIOS cannot be updated because some essential tools like common modules for Win XP has not been installed.
If you are using vista you don?t need Common Modules but I recommend reinstalling VAP.
Then you should try to run BIOS update again.

Otherwise use the recovery disk and set the notebook back to factory settings.
After the notebook has been set to the same state like at the first day of purchase, you could run BIOS update.

I'm having problems with my R500, so thought I would update the BIOS.

I am directed to download

This contains the file P0058v160.exe

Starting that process leads to:

"install2 has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Do these BIOSes have to be installed incrementally? My r500 is an early one and currently running v1.00.

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - Bios update installer crashes

If you want to update the BIOS then you have to download the BIOS package and have to unzip it firstly.
Then execute the exe stored in the folder.

I?m not sure why the error message appears but please ensure that the Common Modules are installed on your system.

If the error will still persists then this could be a problem with the installed Windows OS and not with the BIOS software.

I think the notebook uses the Toshiba BIOS and therefore you have to press F1 immediately after the notebook has been powered up.

I've just taken delivery of an R500 with Xubuntu installed.

I need to get into the BIOS to change some settings. I know the supervisor password and I know that normall one presses ESC and then F1 to get into the BIOS. Unfortunately, I don't get the option to enter the supervisor password - it just puts me straight into the 'User' settings.

I'm also having problems getting the F12 boot device settings to work.

The manual suggests that I use the Windows Configuration utility to adjust some of the bIOS settings, however - I'm not running windows ...

Any thoughts?

Answer:Portege R500: Enter BIOS with known supervisor password

Thats far as I know you will had have windows installed to access some further bios options.

The problem is there is no other software then this windows configuration utility and the common moduls which can access the hardwarelayer.

So, if you want to change something you will have to use windows.. :/

Hint: you can use another HDD where you can install Windows. Maybe a good way to keep ubuntu on the harddisk

I'm trying to disable the admin password in the BIOS of my r500 series notebook, *and I know* the current password.

I've tried the procedure from the following post, which works for disabling the user password. It basically involves changing the password to blank.
But it doesn't work for the admin password:

I originally enabled it because I wanted to see if there were any 'hidden' options in my BIOS (long story ... was trying to get virtualization extensions to work).
Now I have to type it in every time I power up my laptop, which is quite annoying.

Anybody have any suggestions how to get around this?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Clearing admin password in BIOS of Portege R500

Do you mean the admin account password which has to be set during the OS installation?
Such password cannot be disabled in BIOS!

But if you are talking about Supervisor password then I would recommend checking the preinstalled tool called Toshiba Password Utility.
You should find it in Toshiba Utility folder.

The Toshiba Password Utility allows you to set, delete and change the user and supervisor password.

Check it!

my R500, a little older than 2 years, always restarts before booting XP into graphics mode.
It happens also booting from DVD. Accessing BIOS or XP's "F8-Menu" is no problem...

Perhaps onboard graphics chip could be broken, would you agree? Just before the problem I tried to connect a beamer to the VGA Port (what I had done several times before without a problem).

Because somewhere on ebay I spotted a device that seems to have the same problem, I have a little hope, that it may be a known problem or somebody has an idea about it?

It is a great device, but atm I wouldn't have the money to buy it a 2nd time.... :-/

Answer:Portege R500 - restarts instead of booting, only BIOS works

Hi Michael,

It?s really hard to say why this happens and theoretically everything could be the reason of this: Wrong drivers, virus, CPU, RAM, mainboard, etc.

Before you think about exchanging your hardware you should update the display driver. Therefore boot in safe mode and uninstall the display driver. After this start Windows normally and try installing the newest display driver from the Toshiba website.

You wrote that it also happens if you boot from DVD. Have you tested the Toshiba recovery disk? Normally there this shouldn?t happen.
Check this!!!

Recently I acquired a 2008 vintage Toshiba R500-11Z ultraportable laptop. It needed a new keyboard since most of the keys were dead, so I purchased a new replacement (exact same keyboard, from an eBay seller). I also decided to give it a new lease of life by installing a solid-state drive. The old keyboard was secured to the chassis with some sort of sticky back plastic which wasn't reusable, so for the new keyboard I used some strong double sided tape. Before screwing the plastic undercarriage back on I installed Windows 7, with the undercarriage loosely fitted in place. Windows install completed and all looked good. After screwing in the undercarriage I discovered that the optical drive ?its original "open-top" Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-844S? would not read discs; it just makes a noise 3 times but does not then spin up as it would normally. Drive is visible in both Explorer and Device Manager.

After unscrewing the undercarriage, reseating the optical drive, and rescrewing a number of times I haven't been able to get the optical drive to read any discs. What I have established is that the disc must be catching on the ceiling, thus signalling the drive to not spin up; by leaving the screws off that side of the undercarriage allowed me to create a gap so there is more room between the optical drive and the ceiling of the laptop. Discs will then spin up and Windows autoplay will open them. What I can't work out is what has changed in terms of how the drive is mounted an... Read more

Answer:Portege R500- after hardware upgrade ODD will not read

Just to say after a lot of head scratching I worked out the problem. I'd made a mistake in reattaching the metal mounting clip to the back of the optical drive.

I'd screwed the clip on on the outside of the orange coloured connector when it needed to be on the inside (between the optical drive and the orange connector). It seems this must have pushed the drive out of place just enough to stop it from working properly.

Answer:Portege R500 Fingerprint utility failing after Windows 7 upgrade

Seems there is an something wrong with the fingerprint registration? for me it looks like the old fingerprints are still present somewhere in the registry or on the HDD file folder?.

I think you should firstly remove the fingerprints and then should uninstall the software.
After that should clean the registry using an tool like Ccleaner.
Then reboot the unit. Install the VAP (value added package) and the fingerprint software!

Hope this helps!

Dear All,

I have upgraded the OS of my portege R500 to WIndows 7 64 bit and had the following problems:

1. At first the touchpad scroll worked fine (with no driver installed) but then it stopped working .... so I looked for a driver but
2. There are no driver for the touchpad (Alps) that is recognized as a PS compatible mouse
BTW uninstall and reinstall did not work, and I have searched a lot through the web but found no solution.

I have downloaded the drivers for VISTA 64bit, is it safe to use?

Any hints appreciated, thanks.

Yes, it?s safe? You can try to install touchpad drivers for Vista? in worst case you will get a error message that this driver is not compatible or will not work.

But listen dude? there are Win 7 Alps and Synaptics touchpad drivers for Win 7.

Check the Satellite L500 area for example?

I found Win 7 64bit drivers:
Synaptics v14.0.11.0
Alps Electric v7.x5.303.117

I have a Toshiba R100 and am trying to upgrade the BIOS from 1.20 to 1.60. However, I just get "different ROM version" when I run the update.

This version should works properly.
I assume you have tried to upgrade the BIOS with the win-version. Please check this document: IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

There you will find information how to upgrade the BIOS on the R100. You should use the trad-BIOS version.

i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

Answer:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

I see others have had this problem in past. Have file for 8.10. Create floppy disc using drive in docking station. Boot using F12 key. Undocked. No PC cards installed. Using external USB floppy. Doesnt seem to recognise the USB drive. Have to remove battery to power it off.
Hope there is an easier way to do this.

Answer:BIOS upgrade on Portege 7020CT

Notebook must be in boot mode and not resume mode and you have to remove any PC Cards.

How to make the BIOS update:
Just take a 1.4mb 3 1/2 floppy (nonbootable) and unpack the files to it.
Turn off the machine, turn it back on while holding the F12 key or for
newer machines, the key left of the space bar, and the rest is automatic.

It is best to disconnect all peripherals while doing the update.
Make sure that the machine is not in the LAN Docker. This could erase your EPROM's.

To be honest I don?t know what you mean with this.

I have just installed a new hard disk and VISTA (Missing the Toshiba HDD Recovery section - Still do not know how to create)

Anyway I have managed to successfully install VISTA. (Trick was to install the Raid Divers in the installation process)

Current BIOS 1.6

I would like to update my BIOS to version 3.80 (Latest)
I have down loaded the BIOS 3.80 files BUT it will not load.

1. I do not have a FDD :(

2. I tried burinng a CD-ROM from the ISO) Bot I could not get it to boot from the CD-ROM (I only have a Toshiba Extenal CD Rom Drive and not sure if it can boot from CD)

3. I tried to run the Launcher and install via Windows BUT received an error message "NOT SUPPORTED ON THIS COMPUTER"

I think the Launcher can only run under XP not vista.

Is there any steps I am missing... Do I need to do an incremental BIOS update and how do I install without a FDD or Bootable CD-Rom Drive?

Answer:Portege M400 - Bios 3.8 Upgrade installation (Vista)

> 1. I do not have a FDD
You don?t need a FDD because the Toshiba BIOS is win-based BIOS and not traditional BIOS and this would mean that you have to execute the BIOS update while OS is running.

> . I tried burning a CD-ROM from the ISO) But I could not get it to boot from the CD-ROM (I only have a Toshiba External CD Rom Drive and not sure if it can boot from CD)
As mentioned above this BIOS update can be executed ONLY while OS is running! It?s win-based BIOS!!

> 3. I tried to run the Launcher and install via Windows BUT received an error message "NOT SUPPORTED ON THIS COMPUTER"
Either you have chosen a BIOS update which does not support this notebook or you have to run this update using the Toshiba preinstalled Windows OS.

> Do I need to do an incremental BIOS update and how do I install without a FDD or Bootable CD-Rom Drive?
Not possible -> see point 1 and 2

If there is no optical drive bay where you can install an optical drive, then you cannot do it.

You probably need to replace the Mainboard, Base cover, Cable, and other parts. It may be cheaper selling your R500 and buying the other R500 with an ODD, or get an R600.

Unfortunately I've just dropped on the carpet.
Both the DVD drive and the SD drive have now disappeared.
There are no optical drives listed in Device Manager.

I recently installed a replacement optical drive, because it had stopped working a while back.
The SD card reader has not worked properly for a long time, but still was listed.

The new DVD drive was working fine until the bump.

What I find puzzling is that the SD drive has disappeared as well.

I've taken the thing apart and checked the cables are still connected (the DVD drive to the SD board, and the SD board to the motherboard).
All drivers are bang up-to-date.
Windows 7 is up-to-date.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Portege R500 - DVD and SD have disappeared

In my opinion it must be hardware malfunction. Device can be connected but if the controller is defective the device will not be recognized properly.

You can install original recovery image and test functionality with ?factory settings?. If the problem persists, I think, there is nothing you can do about that. New manboard is solution for you.

is it possible to change the HDD of a Portege R500 or is it something special? And wich size do I need?

Answer:Portege R500 - HDD exchange possible?

Of course you can change the HDD of the Portege R500 but this is a little bit tricky. As far as I know you must remove the completely base cover and therefore you must remove a lot of screws.

I think on this model the HDD should only be exchanged by a notebook technician.

My Portege R500 has a C2D U7700 processor, which is always operating at half it's maximum speed. And when I say always, I mean that CPU load makes no difference, battery/AC-power makes no difference, and power plan also makes no difference.

Note that I am not talking about P-states! The processor goes to 1,33GHz when I expect it to. I'm also NOT talking about the thermal throttle, because the cpu is not overheating at all. I'm talking about the *normal power saving throttle*.

How do I know this?

Well, I turned out that this CPU is actually slower than a Atom N270. That couldn't be true, so I went to investigate. I downloaded [RMclock|] and noticed that the throttle never goes higher than 50%. RMclock can also forcibly disable the throttle, and then YES my laptop is literally twice as fast (which can be seen in any CPU benchmark). But after 10 seconds or so, the throttle is back and the laptop is back to half it's maximum speed.

Alright, here's what I've tried so far:
1) In HWSetup, set Dynamic CPU Frequency Mode to "Always High". No change.
2) In Vista, enable "High performance" power plan and max out the "CPU power management" option in advnaced options. No change.
3) In RMclock, set the profile to *only* use the throttle state of 100%. No change.
4) In RMclock, disable the C1E instruction. No change.

So. How do I get the throttle to operate and 100% when I need it to? Otherwise I could... Read more

Answer:Portege R500 - CPU never goes beyond 50% (throttle)

Hello Thany

It will be interesting to know if you still use ?factory settings? with all preinstalled Toshiba stuff or you have maybe own OS installation?

What is the CPU load in idle state?
What happen if you open several applications and you expect more power?
Does CPU usage goes to 50% only and stays on this level?

Hi. Have issue of replacing, replace ssd.

I got PORTEGE R500 (version PPR50U-02M01W) with SAMSUNG_MCCOE64GQMPQ_SE805B0137. It has only 64 GB.

I contacted Toshiba service asking to replace with something bigger, they said it's impossible! HOW SO? It should be possible to replace 64GB SSD to 256GB SSD!

If somebody can give me the link to SSD, which gonna fit 100% in my existing ssd will be very thankful!

Answer:Portege R500 - Can I change the SSD?

>I contacted Toshiba service asking to replace with something bigger, they said it's impossible! HOW SO? It should be possible to replace 64GB SSD to 256GB SSD!

And why should not be this possible? Did the technician say this?
In my knowledge it should be possible to use any SSD drive since the SSD drives use the same interface like common HDDs?

As far as I know there is a SATA controller and common SSD with SATA interface should work?

That?s my opinion?

Went to the service office with it and they replaced they entire keyboard because they said it was almost burned.

SECONDLY, i remember that in the beginning, having this laptop brand new, costed me more than my monthly salary, i was pretty happy with it, i could place it on my feet and start reading and coding.

Hi there.

I have a new Portege R500 running WXP. It works really well except for one thing, when I try to add a USB device that does not install automatically.

I get the "add new hardware" wizard, which finds the drivers and starts to copy the files... but that is as far as it gets. The animation of the files copying into place goes and goes and goes, but never exits. By this point the whole machine has frozen (only the mouse pointer is responsive) it even ignores ctrl-alt-del and I have to power the machine off.

I have tried several times, with a couple of different drivers and always get the same result. The device installs fine on my old M100, also running windows XP.

If anyone knows what is going on (and more importantly, how I might fix it) I would be really grateful.

Answer:WXP and Portege R500 - Cannot add new USB hardware

To compare 4 year old M100 (designed for WXP) and newest Portege R500 (newest hardware and Vista preinstalled) is for me pretty flippant.
Can you please tell us which external device you want to use with your beautiful Portege? Maybe a printer?

One more thing: have you noticed the same issue using different USB devices?

Hi there,

Recently a colleague of mine has been experiencing issues with her portege R500 laptop. The display either turns black with white text (but the image is cutting and very blippy) or the display goes black in general. The laptop is very hot to touch when this happens and if powered off and then turned back on the power LED comes on, but no other LED such as HDD/ wireless as usual.

However, if left for a few hours it turns on fine. I decided it was overheating and was ready to RMA the machine, but when it came to me trying to repeat the heat / hardware failure with numerous stress tests the laptop performed fine for hours on end even with 90-100% load the whole time.

Could this issue be something other than overheating itself? I don't want to RMA a symptom-less machine, but at the same time it's not suitable to pass it back to her for her to do her work on. I've already taken a can of compressed air to it, so its not the venitlation / fan being faulty.

Many Thanks.

Answer:Portege R500 - Overheating?

Hi buddy,

Theoretically it could be an overheating issue but it could be another problem as well. This must be checked from a notebook technician. It?s very hard to say what is defective so you need professional help.

It?s good that you have already cleaned the fan using compressed air spray but maybe the thermal grease must be renewed. Just ask an authorized service provider if it?s necessary and if they can do it for you. :)

I got this new Portege R500 (PPR50E) and the fan noise is driving me crazy! I can't believe why the processor has to run all the time so hot even if it's not on heavy load. Even some light online surfing starts the fan rolling and the whining of it is really annoying. I tried to find software that puts the CPU to halt state, like CPU Idle, but no luck, none of the old apps work with this CPU. The temp is all the time around 60C which is quite a lot even thought I have customized the power management profile to use only the lightest load.
Does anyone have any ideas how to force the CPU to halt state?

I'm also struggling to get standard 1280x720 60Hz resolution to work for an external projector but that's another story.. DTD Calculator does not do it its magic and now I have to start hacking the registry manually...

Then sound card driver. I'd like to use two audio apps at the same time but the driver does not allow sharing of resources which means I can't use Amplitube and Media player at the same time.

The CPU is supposed to be 1,2 GHz dual core and with 2GB memory the machine should run pretty nicely. BUT Vista spoils the fun! This is the second time I use Vista on a laptop and now I'm fully convinced it's a big resource hog and no good OS. R500 should come with Win XP SP3!

I am sorry because I have to whine but I'll return this one to the dealer if there is no solution to these.

Answer:Several issues on Portege R500

Hi buddy

The machine is known to me. It?s a great small and high-performance notebook.
Fact is that the notebook was equipped with a powerful Core2 Duo CPU which produces a lot of warmness.
From my knowledge the internal temperature (not only the CPU temperature) varies and can increases and decrease at 15 degree C/hour.
Fact is also that the cooling modules are not oversized due to the small notebook size and therefore the single fan has to rotate faster to ensure a properly cooling.

It should be also known to you that the newest notebook series are delivered together with the preinstalled Vista OS and this OS needs a lot of resources.
This is no secret.

Of course you can install you own Win XP on the R500.
I think the notebook would not create such warmness using the XP and the cooling modules should run a little bit slower.

The XP installation is possible and all Win XP drivers can be found on the Toshiba European driver page!!!

Greetings mate

I'm just experiencing a HDD failure in my Portege R500.

It won't recover from the Recovery Disk so all options seem to point to a new HDD. Is this something that needs factory fitting? How much to replace (160GB)? Is there an option of a solid state drive instead? I remember this was being talked about?

Adrian Lucas (UK)

Answer:Portege R500 - HDD failure

You can use every SATA HDD, because there is no capacitiy limit. So you can buy the biggest 2,5? HDD and I think it?s a 500GB.

You can use the Product recovery disk for your new HDD and then you will have the factory settings with all drivers and tools from Toshiba.

I don?t know if its possible to use a SSD but I think it?s better to use the same technology as was integrated. So it?s sure that you have no problems with your new drive.

For the past 6 months (just out of warranty...) my R500 has been overheating after about an hour, which eventually results in it freezing. Once it's cooled down, OK for another hour etc. Can I rectify this, or is it simply a feature of very small laptops?

Answer:Portege R500 overheating

The high heat dissipation is always the biggest problem and hitch in the computer (PC & notebook) world.
The smaller notebooks provides nearly the same high performance like desktop PC?s but have no wide and large area for necessary cooling modules? so a higher temperature would be always present and noticeable on small notebooks (no matter what manufacture it is).

But despite this fact your Prot?g? should no not overheat!!!
Therefore I think there is an issue with your notebook.

I don?t know how you use the notebook but first of all you should ensure that the cooling modules are not clogged by dust and debris. In most cases the cooling module fans cannot rotate properly because of dust inside the notebook.
The compressed air spray is a great tool to get the fans free of dust!

Furthermore the cooling ventilators, grilles and the area around the notebook should be free to ensure good air circulation.

In very rare cases it?s also advisable to renew the thermal grease which is placed between the CPU and cooling module.
This should be done by an ASP technician.

I think if you would follow these hints & tips then the notebook will not overheat.

Bye mate and have a good weekend

Good morning,

I have an Toshiba Portege R500 and there is no sound.
On Device Manager I have checked drivers and hardware and it seems to be ok.
I have made test sound with Windows sound and it didn't work.
I have the sound toothed wheel in front of the laptop, no sound.
I use Windows Vista Business SP1.
Can you help me ? Should I use an specific Toshiba software ?

Answer:No sound on Portege R500

Ok, you already checked wheel in front of your notebook. Make sure it is not disabled via FN+ESC key combination.

The other thing could be, it is muted in sound options or level is set to low.
Got to control panel - sound.

Then there should be a green mark on the speaker symbol. Enter properties and go to level and set them to 100. Check that there is no red symbol over the speaker symbol.

It not only gets so hot that typing becomes uncomfortable, or wakes up suddenly while hibernating, the fingerprint sensor gets busted systematically after only a few months after purchase!!!

I read that it might be due to an Internet Explorer update so l uninstalled the updates, but the problem remains and what is worse is that it did not recognize the password either.

Someone helped me get around the written password problem, but one of the main reasons why l bought this Toshiba R500 is because of the fingerprint gadget and it is not working and Toshiba does not provide any assistance with this according to several forum users.

Can anyone tell me how to restore the fingerprint sensor? Has Toshiba ever done it for you

Thank you,

Answer:Portege R500 - How to replace SSD?

Have you tried changing the SATA Mode in the BIOS?

Maybe it needs to be in Compatibility Mode, or changed back to AHCI Mode.

If the notebook is freezing for 2 minutes on the Startup Screen, then there could be a problem with the Optical Drive or a cable or something.
This is common on many PC systems, if the BIOS cannot detect the ODD, it will hang and time out after a minute or two.

An Authorized Service Partner can repair the notebook for you (I assume the notebook is still under warrant). There is a list of ASP's on the Toshiba website.

Please check if your CD/DVD drive is recognized in the BIOS.

If the BIOS didn?t recognize the internal CD/DVD drive then hardware could be faulty.
This would mean that the whole CD/DVD drive must be replaced.

My basic problem is this - I have a Portege r500 with Vista on it. I'm trying to upgrade Vista to XP Pro, but when I put a bootable XP install CD in the drive, it spins up, seeks around for a while, and then I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor on it.

Now I've done this before, so I know that something is supposed to happen next, but nothing does. And I've tried 3 known good install CDs, so it's not a CD issue. Do I need some BIOS/firmware update to boot from CD on this thing? Or am I missing something?

Answer:Portege R500 does not boot from the XP CD

Well? usually the Portege R500 should be able to boot from the CD/DVD drive and should start the setup installation procedure from the Win XP SP2 CD.

But there is one tricky thing.
The Portege R500 needs a Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager (iMSM). This iMSM is necessary to recognize the HDD and to install the Win Xp on the HDD.

I would recommend creating a new Win XP boot CD with the software called ?nLite? and to include the Microsoft SP2 and the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (iMSM) into the Win XP.

Then you could use this CD for the installation.

Just got a Portege R500-124 and they wanted to set it up themselves...

I have looked at the manual and can see you can use F8 on boot up to go to the recovery partition and do a full re-install form there.,
but it would also be good to have a recovery media...

Is there anyway to create this from the laptop ?

This came pre-installed with Windows XP PRo.

Answer:Portege R500-124: Where to get the Reovery DVD

Where do you come from?

As far as I know the Toshiba European notebooks are equipped always with the Toshiba recovery CD.

However, try to contact the ASP in your country and ask if the recovery CD is available for you Port?g? R500.

If not then I would recommend checking your system and the installed applications.
Sometimes there is an option to create a own recovery CD/DVD.
In such case you have to burn the Toshiba image on the DVD.

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Check for Solutions does have the answer.

It's strange because there is power to the drive, when I put a disc in I hear it firing up but it doesn't become visible to the machine!

Any pointers would be useful.

Answer:Portege R500 - DVD no longer working

Standby or Hibernation problems sometimes lead to USB trouble.
I'd suggest you disable the device in the device manager (right click the device for this option), then reboot and reenable the device.

Unfortunately none of this helps understanding, why this error occurred, but maybe it solves the problem

The screen on the R500 (PPR50E-01301TEN) is fine for use for an hour or two on the go, but if I use it persistently through the day, I get a bad neck and headaches (may be the angle that you have to look at it as much as its small size). So I want to get external monitors for it at work and at home. The home one would preferably be an LCD TV.

The trouble is, Windows tells me that the supported widescreen resolutions for the external monitor are 1280x768, 1920x1080 and 1920x1200. Linux only wants to offer me 1280x800 or lower, although I might be able to fix that with a bit of tweaking. Assuming Windows is right, does anyone know of an 18-21" widescreen monitor or TV with one of the supported resolutions as its native resolution, or even as a supported resolution? I can't find anything.

It probably needs to be 1920x1xxx, because 1280x768 is going to be pretty grainy close up on a 18"+ monitor. Why aren't any of the intermediate resolutions common on widescreen monitors (e.g. 1440x900 or 1680x1050) supported? If it can do 1920x1xxx, it should be able to do them.

To test, I fully charged the battery that was delivered with the machine, selected 'Power Saver' power plan, pulled the charger cable out and leaved alone for 3 hours later, with no use of laptop whatoever, the battery was almost discharged

I noticed on the Toshiba sales site that they sell a *Li-ION 6 CELL 5800 MAH* battery for ?95 + vat, is this the same battery thats shipped with the R500-126 and is anyone else having this issue?

Answer:Portege R500-126 battery life

I found this Toshiba product website about Port?g? R500-126:

But unfortunately there is nothing about the battery life time.
There is only this;
Maximum life: currently no official Windows Vista battery benchmark result available

Fact is that the Vista needs more battery power as other OS (i.e. XP) Vista eats notebook resources and from my knowledge it needs two times more battery power as XP.
Furthermore the run time depends on hardware configuration. Stronger devices waste more battery power as the devices with a lower performance.

However, back to you question;
As far as I know the R500 was equipped with the 6cell PA3612U-1BAS/BRS battery pack.

Very important is the right installation order. Please check the installation instruction txt file placed on the page to get the right order.

By the way; the XP instillation will not cancel the warranty ;)

I have a R500 Model PPR50E that I think has built in 3G. Howevere I can find no documentation on how to insert a SIM card. One of the other model seems to suggest that the SIM is inserted behind the keyboard. Can anyone point me at some instruction documentation please?

Answer:Portege R500 with 3G - Instructions for SIM insertion

Unfortunately there is no documentation available. (Maybe in the user manual but if there is nothing then you won´t find anything)

Here are some instructions on how to exchange the SIM card on a portege R400, so I think since both machines are quite similar, the instructions should apply to the R500 too:

Perform the following steps to insert/remove the SIM-Card:

1. Shut the machine completely OFF. Make sure the POWER LED does not light.
2. Remove the AC-adapter, the battery and all attached cables/peripherals.
3. Open the Display.
4. Remove the keyboard cover by putting a small flat-blade screwdriver into the small pit on the edge of the cover and pulling it gently out.
5. Remove both screws which hold the keyboard down and turn the keyboard gently down. (Use a small cross-slot screwdriver to unscrew both screws).
6. To turn the keyboard down, take the upper end of the keyboard, pull it gently up and lay the keyboard with the keys downwards on the palm rest of your machine.

{color:#ff0000}+Do not touch the keys when turning the keyboard back. Make sure you hold the keyboard on both edges and lay it gently down on the palm rest!+
+The keyboard is connected to the machine with a flat-cable . Avoid pulling the cable out of the connector or damaging it!+
+Avoid dropping any objects (like paper clips, etc.) on the inside of the machine. A metal object could cause a short-circuit on the mainboard, which would lead to severe damage to you... Read more

I have installed XP on my Protage R500, installed all drivers from support homepage - but the hibernate mode will not occure as an option when turning the PC off.

- is there a better power management somewhere?
- is there a magical way to do the reinstall?

Answer:No Hibernate or sleep in Portege R500 with WXP

I had this problem on my desktop pc.

First go to control panel -> power options, and enable hibernation.

Then go to Start -> Shut Down, and hold the SHIFT key when you see the Shut Down Dialog.
The "Suspend" option should turn into "Hibernation"

do you know how to remove HDD password? I know current password, but if I try to remove it by changing from current password to blank password it doesn't work.
There is still current password.

Answer:How to remove the HDD passwordon Portege R500?

I hope you are using the correct and right HDD password because it?s needed to remove and to delete the existing HDD password.
If you would forget the HDD password then the HDD would be locked and you would be not able to unlock the HDD!!!

Generally the HDD password can be deleted in the BIOS.
Please ensure that other password would be removed too.

I found a useful forum thread about a similar HDD password issue:

According to the info posted by user ?jonr17? you should firstly ensure that all other passwords like BIOS, User and Supervisor passwords are removed.
Then try to remove the HDD password from the BIOS.

I recently purchased a Portege R500 125. It is excellent size wise , performance wise , specs ,weight etc. But the most important feature for me was the 3G functionality.

On opening the box and the instructions (User Manual) there was no mention about the 3G card slot at all, i had a look around the laptop and could not find a slot . I then wondered if I had indeed purchased the right laptop , looked at the box and it defeinitely said 3G.

So I came onto the support forum and picked up a thread saying that the SIM card slot was behind the battery in the Portege and Tecra range. Hey presto there it was. I thought , excellent put sim card in and fire up the mobliink software.I launched the mobilink software and it said Vodafone UK on the application GUI. clicked connect and it would start saying "connecting" and then would just go back to "Ready".

Next Step was to call Toshiba support , they told me I had to download the Novatel Wireless driver update from the download site ver 10.9 I think. In addition they said that YOU SHOULD NOT USE THE MOBILINK SOFTWARE TO CONNECT ! , I was told to use the Vodafone VISTA software to connect. So got onto the Vodafone site and downloaded the 9.3.0 software , also looked at the read me document (do not usually do this and guess what it mentions that it supports Novatel V10.9) , therefore I was well on my way I thought !. Not yet !

Downloaded the Novatel wireless driver and then installed the Vodafone software. F... Read more

My Portege R500 screen is leaking light very much in the edges and it is impossible to view anything from the sides.
Viewing videos is very difficult. Black is actually dark grey.

Do I have a faulty unit?
Is it possible to fix this screen in the garantee service?

How is your R500 screen?

Answer:Portege R500 screen issue

I'm not quite sure what could be exactly wrong. Possibly there is something wrong with the FL inverter? but this is my personal suggestion.
To get a detailed fault diagnosis an notebook check would be necessary.

>Is it possible to fix this screen in the warranty service?
If you warranty is valid everything should be done for free? Just contact the ASP in your country and ask for the further handling.

The technician from authorized service provider should be able to provide more details and should help you.

Good luck

I am having problems with my battery. The battery seems to charge OK, but sometimes recently, when I awaken the PC, the charge light flashes orange and nothing seems to work. If I take the battery out and put it back in again, it boots up OK again and the battery says it is fully charged.

Any ideas?

Angus Walker

Answer:Portege R500 - battery problems

Hi Angus Walker,

Why do you think the problem is related to battery?

Awaken the PC means it was in sleep mode?
If yes I think it?s another problem that could be software based. I mean if you take out the battery and put it in again and then the computer starts the battery is charged, your computer is able to boot with battery only so it seems to be ok.

In your posting I can?t find an information about your operating system? Which one you are using?

I would also try to load the default settings in BIOS and test it again. Make also sure that all Windows Updates are installed if you use Windows as your OS ;)

(sorry for the crosspost, this question is already in the 3G forum, but maybe this one is a bit more crowded...)

I'm struggling with an R500, equipped with the 3G module, on which I installed XP SP2 from scratch: I downloaded the Vista drivers for the 3G module, which seem to install fine, and then installed the MobiLink SW. But when I run it, the SIM card is seen fine, but then I get "Radio is turned off", while it's not...
Drivers issue?

Any idea?
Another strange thing is that the wireless hotkey does not work.

Answer:Portege R500:XP drivers for 3G module?

At the moment you won't find 3G driver for Windows XP for R500 in the web.
Try this, but it is a little bit tricky:
- Remove the Vista 3G driver (one modem device and four com-ports) from device manager. It's the best to remove the according oemXX.inf files in the \windows\inf directory, too.
- Download the M400 3G driver from
- Install the driver by setup. You will have 2 unkown com devices after installation because M400 has an older Novatel 3G module than R500.
- Extract the former Vista 3G driver and use this driver for the two unkown 3G com devices.
Now everthing is running with Windows XP.

The other thing is why your wireless hotkey utiltiy doesn't work.
1. Do you have the right wireless hotkey utility? You have to install the one WITH 3G included. If not download it from M400 , remove the old one and install this version. It wil work fine.
2. You have to add the PnP-ID of your wireless lan card to the list of switchable devices in the wireless hotkey registry. You can do this in two ways. The easiest is to download the wireless lan driver from toshiba website . In the download there is a regfile IMDGInst.reg. Add the content to your registry. Immediate after inserting the FN+F8 is working.

I have a Portege R500 which recently had an unfortunate meeting with the floor and needed a new hard drive among other things; it is therefore like new in the software aspect.

Since getting it back the touchpad does not scroll at all.
I have checked control panel, and it only gives me options for number of lines to go down per click of the scroll wheel, so it looks like it thinks its a normal mouse.

Also, there is no icon in the notification area on the taskbar showing when you touch the pad, which there used to be, and u could access lots of settings such as size of scroll area etc..
I have checked the driver and it is the same as the one offered in the downloads section so its not that, but i can find no sign of this other piece of software anywhere.

Does anyone know where i can download the icon and its accompanying settings or any other way of making it scroll?

Answer:Portege R500 - some touchpad settings are not available

It looks like you have not installed some necessary touchpad driver.
Toshiba driver page provides an Alps Electric Touch Pad Driver for the Portege R500.
Install it!!!

Then you could check the settings in control panel -> mouse -> hardware -> touchpad properties

Is it possible to install Windows 8 on a Portege R500 ? I tried and failed. I think the reason is that Windows 8 uses a GPT disk and not MBR.

Is there a BIOS update to deal with GPT disks ?

Answer:Installing Windows 8 on Portege R500

As far as I know this old Portege is not supported for Win8 and Toshiba doesn't offer any Win8 driver, tool or utility, especially not some BIOS version designed to help with Win8 installation.

I've been having a problem with my laptop for that last 6-8 weeks and it would be brilliant if anyone can suggest a possible cause/cure.

I have a 10 month old toshiba R500 protege (Core 2 Duo processors at 1.7 GHz, Intel GMA graphics, 2 GB ram, 120 GB hard disk drive, Vista)
it has been useless. I've already had 2 disc drives and a new hard drive.

The problem seems to arise every 2-3 weeks in between bouts of the laptop working fine.

What happens is the CPU will jump to a least 90-100% and stick there for between 2 and 10 minutes.
Obviously this slows the whole computer down, but never crashes it.

I have tried to narrow down what is causing it, but this will happen when either itunes. outlook or IE are open, and has happened with them all open, or just one open at a time. This has really left me stuck as to what could be the cause, and other people suggestions of either too many windows open, too much flash, etc havent been much help because of the numerous culprits.

This just happened with itunes open on its own.
This seems to be the most common cause of it, especially when playing music or syncing an ipod/iphone.
I have all my music on an external drive which could possible been a factor??? who knows?

I managed to note down the below info from the task manager:

Process Window:
Itunes was at 36 in the CPU column with 110.00k in the memory column

Performance Window:
Cpu: 100%
Memory: 1.24 (of 2g of memory)
Page file: 1815/4313

If anyone ... Read more

Answer:Portege R500 - CPU jumping and sticking at 100%

If the CPU is at 100%, but the processes in Task Manager dont add up to 100%, then its probably the Drivers that are eating the CPU cycles.

Have you installed a printer or another USB device recently? Try uninstalling the drivers for those additional devices.

Also ensure the BIOS and Toshiba drivers are up to date.

The sound volume on my R500 (R500-11c to be exact) is ridiculously low. Only with volume maxed out (100) and using headphones do I hear anything at all, and even then it's way too low to be useful. I can just make out the test sounds in the left and then right earphone when using the test sound found at Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers (there are no Headphones to be selected) -> Properties -> Advanced -> Test. Unplugging the headphones I hear nothing from the speakers, due to the (very low) sounds made by the fan and HDD. Playing music (with headphones) I can just make out that sounds are being produced, but I can't even make out what is playing.

I've tested the things mentioned in the "Satellite 5105-S901 Sound is very low (even on max volume) using supplied Toshiba driver" thread with no success (including Loudness Equalization).

I'm running Vista Business 32bit, and have tried the driver_audio_realtek26117B.exe, driver_audio_realtek_TC00157600B.exe, and Vista_Win7_R243_x86.exe driver files, and also used the util_mute_off_25847B.exe utility.

Enabling mute makes the already faint sounds go completely silent, so I don't think it's a mute issue.

Jack detection does work, I can see that in the Realtek HD Audio Manager program. Using that program's sound test (Speaker Configuration) I have to go to a completely silent room, and even then I only hear something in the right earphone. (I think; it's so darn low I could be imagining I hear it... Read more

Answer:Very low sound volume on Portege R500

According to your message, you have already tried to increase the volume using all possible options?
Did you try to increase the volume in control panel -> Realtek HD audio manager??
Check this?

You have also tried to update the Realtek sound driver?.
Did you use the one from the Realtek page directly?
Check this!

If this will not help, you could test the notebook with new recovered system?

But if this will not improve the volume, then this could be a hardware problem?

Portege R500 shuts down automatically when connected to mains power for a certain period.
Happens on both Toshiba power cable and igo juice cable. Tends to happen when it gets hot, with and without battery connected.

Yellow power light flashes 2 long, 2 short, 1 long, 3 short. Only way to reset is to take out power cable and battery.
Used to happen after being connected for a while and will only operate on mains power after a long wait.
Now happening more often, even if connection to laptop is not hot.

This is the 3rd generation of this laptop I have had over the past 10 years and with mid-life memory upgrade they seem to be very robust and this is the only fundamental problem I have come across.

Does anybody have any fixes?

Answer:Portege R500 shuts down automatically

The blinking code means that a hardware problem has been detected on the motherboard.
Therefore I think that this could be an hardware related issue and not an overheating issue?
But nothing is impossible?
You could try to clean the cooling modules/fans using an compressed air spray?
This would help you to remove the dust from the notebook cooling grilles?
This workaround is very useful if the notebooks temperature is too high and if the notebook shuts down automatically in order to prevent the hardware parts from damage?

Check and try this out?

I got a used Protege R500 and installed Windows7 Professional. But I don't have sound. If I open music, I see the green bar on the volume control in the tray rising and falling. So it plays sound but it doesn't get it out of the speakers or the headphone.

Plugging in the headphone is also well recognized by Win7. It also records sound. I tested in Skype, others can hear me, but I can't hear them. In the device manager the audio is listed with "Realtech High Definition Audio (With EC)". There is only one device in Device Manager which is not recognized (Unknown Device).

My Portege R500 shut down last night while viewing "my pictures" and I have not been able to get it to reboot back up.

I have removed the battery and am running on direct power, but when I power up I get the Toshiba page with "Intel" in the lower right hand corner and five device icons lower center.

It will not boot to Windows, I know I should know, but I "think" it runs XP.

I do not have any recovery disks, it was passed on to us from my father in law a few years ago and no support disks came along that I can find.

Can anyone help Please!

Answer:Portege R500-S5001X will not boot up

Can you check some things please?

Can you boot into safe mode? After you have powered on the notebook press F8 key to access the advanced boot menu of Windows and select mode.

If you can?t access the advanced boot menu of Windows you should check the BIOS if the HDD is recognized properly.

I have the problem.

I just tried to delete the upper/lower filters, but it didn't work.
I called Toshiba support and they suggested re-installing windows, which I am not an answer I am satisfied with.

I am running XP with SP3, and I am beginning to wonder if the issue has something to do with the driver not being compatible with SP3...
What do you guys think?

Answer:Portege R500 - CD/DVD drive does not work

If you are not satisfied with Toshiba answer the next step is to ask Microsoft what to do.
Toshiba has delivered your notebook with perfect configured hardware. Because of some reason the drive doesn?t work well. Microsoft has offered this method with filters. If this doesn?t work you have two options: to install OS again using recovery media and have ?clean? operating system again or check Microsoft Knowledge base for other possible solutions.

As far as I know this issue has nothing to do with some specific service pack and in most cases solution given by Microsoft works (the same happened to me once).

On the laptop keyboard, you can use Fn+F5 to switch the video output from the notebook screen to an externally connected one.
Is there a key press that you can use with a USB keyboard connected to the laptop that would have the same effect at Fn+F5?

We have a problem with our Portege R500's.
When the laptop is docked in the port replicator, we have an extended desktop on two monitors - a 22" screen on DVI and a 17" on VGA.
When the user takes their laptop away and uses it out of the port replicator, the display reverts to single display on the notebook screen so this means when they re-dock their laptop in the port replicator they have no display on either screen.

The work around is to open the laptop, press Fn+F5, close the laptop log on and set the display mode from saved schemes in the intel software.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Portege R500 - Can I use Fn+F5 on external keyboard?

You message described exactly how the display switch function works.
Everything is OK.

If you ask for FN + F5 function on external keyboard then I have to say that as far as I know this FN functionality is not available if the external keyboard does not support FN buttons.

But you could also check the Toshiba Mobile Extension (if you are using Win XP).
In Mobile Extension -> Display change service tab you could enable the ?Display change service? and could check how the display changes after docking and undocking the R500.

The hot keys (or function keys) no longer work on my Portege R500 although the F10 and F11 keys do work. I'm not aware of exactly when they stopped working, or if it is related to a particular event.

I have downloaded the latest Hotkeys driver however, having extracted the files, when I select tfnf5.exe and try to run it, nothing happens. I am unable to delete the file, as it tells me it is in use.

When I try to start up Toshiba Accessibility, I receive a message "The system, can not use Toshiba Accessibililty". (I don't know why there is a comma after system).

Does anyone know about the internal 3G on the R500-3G125 as I can find no detailed information anywhere?
My boss is attracted by the internal unit, having had problems with an external stick modem.

I am trying to find out if it will take our existing Vodaphone service.
They can only tell me that they only support the SIM card, and anything betond that is up to the manufacturer.

So does the R500 have a SIM card slot or how does it work, and does anyone have experience of using Vodaphone or another service provider on it?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer:Is Portege R500 3G compatible with Vodaphone?

Ok - having found the 3G part of the forum (should have looked closer before!), the answer seems to be yes it is, the sim slot is behind the battery, and there can be problems with Vodaphone sims but there are fixes available although Vista SP1 could be problematical.

Looks like we'll be getting an R500-3G to add to the fleet!

If anyone has anything to add. would still be grateful.

I have an Portege R500 series notebook with U7600 processor, and would *like to know what other users average operating temperature is for normal desktop use* i.e. word processing, watching DVDs/youtube, surfing the net, etc.

I'm asking because I've recently bought a second-hand dock (port replicator ii), and also upgraded the OS on the laptop. It seems to me that there may be a problem, because under heavy usage (compiling software) the performance seems to degrade on the machine - only solution seems to be to power off the machine and leave it off for a few minutes.
Even when I'm not doing anything heavy - such as typing this post, the CPU temp lingers in the high 80's (celcius).

I've seen on the forums that other people have had problems with overheating on this laptop model. My machine is about three and a half years old. I've opened it up and cleaned the fan with compressed air, and verified that it actually spins when powered on. However, I don't feel much airflow if I put my hand next to the exhaust when it's on.

Can someone confirm if the exhaust is supposed to s u c k or expel the air? Can you confirm your average CPU temps? Anyone know of issues with the dock that cause overheating?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all,

I've got a Portege R500 for an year now and yesterday it started to fail during POST, I presume.
The display is stuck at the power on screen, with the boot device selection icons, but no action can be taken (entering bios, selecting boot device, etc...). I've already tried to remove the battery for a couple of hours, without any result, but I assume that It would take more than a couple of hours to deplete the backup battery and reset the CMOS...
Other than the boot screen, no other information is available, so I'm thinking that this machine is dead... Does anybody had a similar problem?

Best regards,

Answer:Portege R500 fails during POST

Normally this POST screen hanging means that a hardware component can?t be recognized properly. In your case I would try removing the HDD and CD/DVD drive. Try also resetting the RAM modules.

If it doesn?t work it seems to be a BIOS problem. Therefore you should contact an authorized service provider in your country. They can try to reset the BIOS or reflash it.
