Preferred Solution: How do I use a USB flash drive to store information from a document?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using a 4gb Dick Smith flash drive from New Zealand in various computers. When I put it in, the files all show, then if I press F5, or select a file, the explorer freezes, then comes back up saying there is nothing on the disk, and the properties show that it has 0 bytes available, 0 bytes used. I can copy maybe 2 files max. It has around 100 photos, a picassa .inf file, a thumbs file, and quite a few music files on it. I'm not sure how many as I can't click sub folders to see. I have tried unlocker and autorun, but neither of them see anything

Any help?

I type my document in Microsoft Word on my laptop computer and put them onto a flash drive from my laptop. When i go home I put in my flashdrive to sent the document by email and it goes through, but is all garbled on the receivers end.

Answer:word document on flash drive garbles in email

There are a lot of steps in between. Does the file open on the flash drive? What about when copied to the computer? What version of Word was it created with? Using standard fonts? Any special coding? Does the receiver have the same version of Word installed? Is the problem with just one recipient?

For some reason, FAT32 flash drive can store files with more than 8.3 characters?
I thought FAT formatted drives can only have files with names that are no longer than 8.3 characters?

Answer:FAT32 Flash drive can store files with more than 8.3 characters?

Dos was restricted to the 8.3 file name convention but I don't believe its a restriction for fat 32. I pretty sure on windows 2000 and XP if you had a fat 32 drive it saved both the long and the short (8.3) filenames in the file allocation table.

ice received a late gift, an 8GB flash drive. was wondering, can i store some files on it permanently? ive got this batch of saved files of icons from wincustomize site.. would be nice to store em, and delete the original files and freeup space...i tested it out, i was able to access files normally.

Answer:can i store files on portable flash drive permanently?

Of course you can. Flash drives are made for that. I keep many files on flash drives. Just got a 16GB drive to move my files around between my different locations. Just plug it in and use it like your disk. If you want to move e.g. Pictures or Documents or Music permanently to the flash drive, let me know. I will tell you how to setup the Start menu so it opens those on the flash drive rather than looking for them on the OS disk.

I just bought a Verbatim Store 'n' Go 1GB flash drive, and included was an application called V-Safe 100. It creates a password protected section on the flash drive, and I thought I would try it out. I made a 300MB 'Privacy Zone', but wasn't impressed so I formatted the flash drive.

Now, my flash drive is labeled 'PUBLICZONE', and is only 700MB. So the Privacy Zone is still there, I just cannot access it. No matter what I try, everything only recognises the flash drive as having 700MB of memory; Norton Partition Magic, Paragon Partition Magic, Windows XP, Linux Ubuntu, those are some I've tried so far.

I tried putting V-Safe 100 back on there, but when I try running it, it gives me the following message: "Please insert Store 'n' Go and run as privileged user".

Please help me resolve this, I really need that 300MB back

I am replacing my hard drive this week because of some viruses, I am wondering if I should also replace the RAM. Is it cleared every time there is no power going to it or does it store information all the time? I dont want to install a new Hd and there be a virus hidden on the RAM, if thats how it works.

Answer:Does RAM store any information?

Every time you shut down your computer, the RAM contents should be cleared. Instead of replacing your hard drive though, why don't you just reformat? That should wipe everything.

Answer:document contains formatting information created by another application, it will like

Is there any way to find out what the format is supposed to be? Most programs go by the file extension when they try to read it. They don't usually analyze the content. If it was .rtf then wordpad should be able to handle it. Try the free Word reader. Maybe it's an MSWord file.

I'm running WinXP-SP2, with Windows Media Player 10, on a fairly new Dell laptop.

The problem I'm running into is this: When I play an audio CD from Windows media player (store-bought, normal album- Not burned or anything), it lists the tracks on the side as "track 1, track 2..." etc, by "Unknown Artist". If I click on "Find Album Info", a window within WMP displays the correct album name, track names, album cover art, etc... I click "finish", but in the "now playing" window, nothing has changed. All the tracks are still named by track number, the artist is still "unknown artist", etc.

I've attempted checking all the "Display & Update" checkboxes in tools > options > privacy tab, as well as "retrieve additional info from the internet" in the corresponding library tab.

I've confirmed this is an issue with this machine and not the CD's, by playing them on a different computer, also with XP-SP2 and WMP-10, with identical settings, and all the information downloads and is displayed correctly.

Also, I have Musicmatch Jukebox installed on this computer, though I don't use it. I've noticed that occasionally searching for album info takes me to a Musicmatch page in WMP, but I'm not sure if it's related...

Help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:WMP doesn't store audio cd information

Here's the advice from Microsoft;

If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, do the following in Internet Explorer:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
In Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files.
- or -
Click Settings, and then increase the size of the cache.

We just had one of our main mail servers fail due to a missing log file. I was wondering if anyone had ever ran eseutil.exe before. We are currently in the process of repairing the database with this utility and it has been stuck on the "reparing database" portion for about 2 hours now. It is at the point where it says "deleting unicode fixup table". It hasn't moved for a while, but the .raw file is being written to every now and then and the process doesn't appear to be hung. Has anyone experienced this before?

PS ~ I understand that this utility generally takes a while to complete. I just want to make sure that I'm not wasting valuable time if it is hung up.

Answer:Exchange Information Store Failure

You are fine. eseutil.exe always takes awhile to complete. If you are writing the output to a log file it tends to run quicker

I work for the government, Windows 7 is approved for testing use right now but they are worried about virtual XP.
We do a lot of remediation (checking for venerabilities in the OS) and they are concerned that the software we use to re-mediate and scan(Retina) will pick up the Windows XP OS in Windows 7 because of XP mode.
I tried to articulate my point, but had no data to back it up. Windows XP mode isnt a full OS as in it takes a portion of your hard drive to use for registry and installation programs like VMware. Rather the virtualization portion emlulates only what is needed for that particular program to run, its not a full OS that would take up a portion of the HDD and would be picked up on a scan.
Can anyone answer this? If so let me know where to find that info so I can prove my point.

Answer:Where does Windows 7 store XP mode information?

XP Mode uses Microsoft Virtual PC as it's main program, with Windows XP as the guest OS. It is usually a virtual hard disk (VHD or similar) to where the XP information is stored. It is (supposedly) sandboxed from the host OS completely. XP Mode is a full OS, with the registry and all other programs installed within the virtual machine and associated virtual hard drive. The VirtualPC emulates the hardware, but it is separate from the host OS.

It does take up a portion of the HDD, only in the sense of the virtual hard drive. A single file (which is dynamically sized to fit your installation). You could install XP Mode and infect it with tons of viruses, and the host OS wouldn't pick them up, even in a virus scan. It is (like I said before: supposedly!) completely isolated from the host OS, unless you turn on the OS integration, which will allow you to drag and drop, among other things.... I am not sure if that has a vulnerability to infect the host OS or not, but I doubt it.

That is from my personal experience with Virtual machines, and from what I've scanned so far.

Hello experts, I have a word file that appears to have been corrupted. We were working on it through SharePoint and at some point the style information seems to have been corrupted. When you use the style inspector and click on a location in the text it will say the correct information. For example a level 2 heading will look and appear as a level 2 heading in the text and have the correct style attached. However, when you use the navigation pane or create a table of contents nothing is indented as it should be (level 2 is not subordinate to level 1). I have read that there are table of contents styles in Word but I don't know how to change these. Does anyone know if this would fix the issue?
I tried manually to 'reset' a few styles (highlight text and reclick 'level 2 header' ) which fixed the issue in that instance. However, this is a long document (150 pages) and I wouldn't want to do this for the whole document.
If anyone has some advice it would be greatly appreciated,

Answer:Word 2010 Document Corrupt Header/TOC information

Couple things you do, first apply guide below and second make use Word Repair Toolbox
Moreover you read next interesting threads about ms word-
The first thing you must do is copy the file from the stick to the HD. Don't make matters worse by trying to work with it from the stick. There's a possibility the document is already corrupted, but the problem you describe may not really be document corruption. It may be just an annoying little glitch occasionally seen in older versions of Word, whereby letters in a line get compacted in printing:
The conventional solution is this:
In the Print dialog, switch to another printer and then back, or close Word and delete the files you find by searching for
Then restart Word.
If that doesn't help, then, since this is Word 2003, there are a couple of other things you can try:
In Word's Open dialog, select the file, click the arrow beside Open, and choose Open and Repair.
If that doesn't help, then change the "Files of type" setting to "Recover Text from Any File." You'll get a file with a lot of "garbage" at the beginning and end and just plain text in between, but, since I'm guessing there's not a whole lot of formatting involved in this document, just reco... Office 2003 Professional suite worked fine on my old computer running Windows 7. Hard drive died. Bought new machine, also running Windows 7 and installed Office 2003 on it. Installed all system updates and upgraded to Service Pack 3. Copied my PST files out of the backup onto the new machine.

My email is stored on a POP3 internet server. The profile works to send a sample message to the online mail server, but when I launch Outlook, I get "Unable to open your default email folders. The information store could not be opened."

I have been searching for a solution for three days. I have tried every suggestion I found in various forums including creating a new profile, selecting the PST file to open, creating a new PST file. I even uninstalled Office and then reinstalled. But still no solution.

Answer:Outlook 2003 - Information store could not be opened

Create a new profile, and let Outlook create a new PST file, then "import" the one you moved over.

Hello All:

First post, I hope I am not out of line asking this.

So, here is what I am trying to accomplish. I have a workbook that has multiple sheets. One of these sheets I want to act as a data entry sheet where information will get posted/saved to another sheet in the same workbook based on a drop down selection made on the data entry sheet.

The information is basically daily operations data for multiple sites across the country. So, users will open the workbook, post their information on the data entry worksheet title Post Data and then press a button (run a macro) to post/save that information with formatting on their site's worksheet (1 of 18 choices labeled by location such as : ATL, BAL, CAM, etc.) in the next available row.

I am a HUGE novice when it comes to creating macros and appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction on how to accomplish this. Please let me know if you need more information.

Answer:Macro Needed to store information on a specified sheet

Hi welcome to the forum,
Macro's are not all the difficult, what they do is just carry our instructions as they are passed to it.
You could, if you want to learn something about macros, start by recording one.
What I suggest is you fill in the 'form sheet', once it's complete you start recording a macro and then just do what you you do manually, when completed you stop te 'recorder'.
If you open the VBa editot Alt + F11 you can see what it does, this will only owrk once but you hava a basic idea of what can be doen.
I would like to help you but then I would like you to attach a sample of the file you already have and with some dummy data.
I also suggest you mention which version of Excel you're using too, that's quite important too.

I am not very familiar with virus behavior, so I wish to ask a question: do viruses store any personal information? For instance, if you need to send (or have already sent) to third parties an infected file for scanning, how do you know it does not contain any of your personal data?
Edited: 33 views already but no answer. No one knows?

Answer:Do virus files store personal information

A Virus is a man-made program (small bits of programming code disguised as something else or buried in other codes) that causes an unexpected and usually undesirable event. A virus can replicate itself and is designed to automatically spread to other computer users. Viruses can be transmitted through email attachments, downloads or removable media such as CDs, DVDs, or USB drives. Depending on the maliciousness and skill of the virus creator, the damage caused by a virus will vary. Some viruses will spread its viral code into other programs, corrupt, modify or even erase files. Some viruses wreak their effect as soon as their code is executed while other viruses lie dormant until circumstances cause their code to be executed by the computer. Viruses are usually classified by various criteria to include origin, techniques, types of files they infect, where they hide, kind of damage they cause, etc.
All about Viruses
Viruses 101
As such, a virus will not store your personal information. On the other hand, some types of malware (i.e. Trojans) can steal your personal information.
To fully understand what a virus does, you need to understand there are many other types of malware and that they differ from each other.

We are having mega issues with backing up the Information Store on Exchange using ARCserve 2000 on Windows 2000 SBS. All the data and everything else backs up fine, apart from this, and the following error message is displayed.

E8602 Failed to read from database. (DBNAME= First Storage Group, EC= Backup Agent Error - (69) "Read/write error in named pipes")

We have tried absolutly everything! Reinstalling ARCserve, the agents, not even computer associates had an answer. The only thing I can think of is that the Exchange databases were moved from the C to the D drive a while ago to create space. But I was under the understanding that this wouldn't create any issues?!?!

Anyone come across this before, or got any ideas?

In my PC (Windows 7 Professional - 32 Bit Operatins System - Service Pack 1 installed) whenever I plug in Flash Drive, the system creates short cut for all the folders in the Flash Drive. The folders and its contents are safe.

But I am unable to Safely Dismount the Flash Drive and the system on choosing Eject the Drive will display "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." message.

If I go through My Computer - Right Click on Flash Drive and then Eject the system shows the following message

"F: is Currently in Use. Save any Open Files on this disc, and then close the files or programs
using the files before trying again. If you choose to continue, the files will be closed, which might cause data to be lost.

Cancel Try Again Continue"

If we choose Continue, system displays "Safe to Remove Hardware".

I am having a laptop with same OS and there when I plug in the flash drive it does not create any short cut and no such problems.

Both the systems are having Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.671.4971 and are upto date on Virus Siglature update.

Which flash drive is the fastest to use with Vista's page file on flash drive capability?

Answer:What flash drive is the fastest to use w/ vista's flash drive page file caching?

No no no, wrong wrong wrong. Whoa there, sonny, let's back up a bit.

Before you go preaching it's like having your pagefile on a USB drive, you need to learn more about ReadyBoost, which is the correct name for the specific technology. It's not putting your pagefile on the USB Flash device, it's just using the Flash RAM device to augment (read: add to the performance) some aspects of Vista's SuperFetch and virtual memory subsystems.

There are several threads about this feature here already; search for "readyboost" and you can learn more about it, which I STRONGLY recommend since you're getting off on the wrong foot already.

No problem with you being enthusiastic since ReadyBoost is a great feature and a nice way to improve system performance, but you need to present your posts in an accurate and meaningful way with facts and not just a bunch of statements that sound like "OMG it's the greatest thing evarrrrr..."

You're close, but do some more research here and other places to get the real scoop about ReadyBoost.

Most any USB 2.0 Flash-RAM based device should work just fine, but the cheap ones - those $10 specials at stores - might not be up to snuff for transfer speeds. If you stick one in and Vista offers to let it be used for ReadyBoost, that means Vista tested it and concluded it's up to the task.

I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Removable Flash Drive Recognized as a Local Disk and not a Flash Drive

Hello masonta. Welcome to the forum.

Let's start with this: can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window, expanded so we can read everything, with the USB stick installed?

You also might check in Device Manager to see if the stick shows up as a USB device, or a hard disk.

No there is no software that you can use

There may be no doubt that flash drives are the product of the decade - you'll be challenging pressed to discover a promotional product supplier that doesn't supply some form of memory to their client. Where can the regular customer purchase them? Virtually anywhere! USB sticks, memory sticks, flash drives, pen drives; call them what ever you want, but the UK has plethora of recent specialists attempting to capitalise on the popularity of the item, but FT Promotions had been one of the 1st to offer flash drives with printed logos to the promotional industry.
And let face it; the flash drive is absolutely now a commodity, no longer a "nice to have" product. And as with all commodities a price war has ensued. Buyers are targeted almost daily with mails of flash drive price lists issued by suppliers in an attempt to keep up with continually fluctuating price of flash memory.
Perhaps the most positive aspect of USB flash drives as a promotional gift is that they're almost universally welcomed by the recipient as something truly useful - a handy sizes piece of kit which they'll use nearly every single day. If you ask any recipient of USB flash drive what have you carried out with your USB memory stick, you will have a comparable answer, in my desk or in my pc. They're certainly not a give away that gets thrown away.
Memory capacities have increased over the years from moderate megabyte to gigabytes, making flash drives even a lot more appealing. There's also added... Read more

Our server crashed during the Backup Last night around 07:00 (in the morning). It was totally stuck when I came into the office this morning...

Now I have been busy all day finding out why the server was not starting properly. Every time the server got to the "Applying Computer Settings" Menu the server got stuck after 15-20 minutes.
I could start the server in Safe Mode. After several boots I found out that the exchange information store service is causing the server to get stuck, as soon as I start this service the server (SBS2003) hangs...

I am not really an exchange expert. How can I fix the problem....

right now I am going to use "eseutil /g" to check the databases, any other maintenance I can use??

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Solved: SBS 2003 + Exchange 2003 Information Store Problem

Problem has been solved

Step 1:
I restored the mailbox and public store from the backup including the logfiles

Step 2:
Made a backup of the Exchange Logfiles and deleted the logfiles in the original location

Step 3:
opened a commandpromt and browsed to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin
Ran: "ESEUTIL /mh on the public and private EDB (seperately)

Stap 4:
Ran "ESEUTIL /cc "LocationtoLogfiles (e.g. C:\ExchangeLog_Temp)"

The process completed succesfully and the public and private store are mounted and online again!!!!

Answer:Transferring data from 1 flash drive to another flash drive

There really isn't another way to copy them. They have to physically read from one device and write on another. Depending on size of files and how many, it can indeed take a while. The only thing that would speed up the process is if you had USB 3.0 drives. I assume you are using 2.0.

I bought a Y560 laptop October 2010 with 32GB SSD / 500GB HDD because of it's promotion of this new rapid drive technology in Hong Kong, and everything goes fine for few months. Last week, I powered my laptop normally but the windows loads to the repair screen automatically. After self-restart, "Operating System not found" is shown and no further operation. Then I tried to use Onekey recovery to rescue my OS, but after I knew all data would be initialized after using, I chose not to continue and tried to plug out the hard drive and restore my data via other computer in accordance to the Lenovo's suggestion. Unfortunately, the major partition was not readable by windows. The next day, I brought it to the service centre, and asked them how can I rescue my data. They said the same procedure that I've did that unplugging my hard drive and copying my data via other computer. Of course, I've told them I've performed the same task and still not work and asked them to demonstrate for me, but they said they haven't got any spare machine to do demonstration. After that, they tried to repair my laptop with windows installation disk, but I've questioned them there is a notice that to use Onekey recovery to perform system maintenance, they replied that is a standard procedure of repairing services. 3 Hours after, I still could not get the corresponding answer how can I rescue my data from my hard drive and got these responses: 1. So what I am trying to do is copy my original 80gb hard drive over to a bigger 250gb without having to reformat and redo everything.

So what I am doing is hooking up the 250 via a USB external case and using Norton Ghost to copy my 80gb to the 250.

After the copy has completed I install the 250 into the notebook and boot from that disk.

It tells me "can not find bootmgr". So I put the recovery DVD in and let it boot from that and let windows repair itself. It takes two reboots to repair and then it boots up fine.

Here is the trouble. Now it will boot up to the welcome/log on screen where I can select my profile or my wifes profile. I can use either one and it is the same, they are both admin profiles.

It will say "preparing your desktop" with the spinning "wait" ring next to it. It will do this for almost a minute. then it will bring me to a blank light blue desktop. There is nothing available to click on but I do have an arrow to move around. In the bottom right corner in small script it says, "this copy of windows is not genuine".

I spoke with a Microsoft tech and she gave me this solution. Windows 7 displays "Windows is not Genuine" with error code of 0x80070005

The problem with this is that I do not have access to a command prompt. The only keyboard shortcuts that are working are CTL+ALT+DEL which I have to use shut the computer down, WIN+P and WIN+L.

So should I use a different program... Read more

Answer:Problems Transfering Drive Information to a New Drive

Not sure about the Norton program as i have not used it in many years but there are alternatives, win 7 have a feature in the backup section that lets you take an image of the HDD(and the 100MB boot sector) that could be restored(via booting from win7 dvd)to another drive.
If done successfully then it should be identical on reboot as original install was.

Other option are Acronis or Paragon that have free software to do this that seem quite popular amongst other users here although acronis does not give full package for free but should be enough for what you want to do.

I would take an image of the drive to external media, then unplug old HDD plug in new one then restore image to new HDD(via booting from win7 dvd), also be sure that new drive is set as system and active partition.

Hope this helps

Well it sees pretty much everythingon the drive but whenever I try to look at her My Documents and Settings folder, there is a restriction. I'm assuming its probably because of the password she had on her machine.

This post is just to share some information. Several times I have written regarding a problem with my CD-ROM not working. I was finally advised that it sounded like my CD-ROM drive was kaput. So, I finally bought one (Best Buy $60) and installed it. Same problem. THEN I decided to take my computer to a shop. Guess what the problem was. I needed a new CONTROL CHIP. Cost $45 to replace (labor and parts). Had I known that might have been the problem, I could have saved $60 since the tech said more likely than not the old CD-Rom problem was caused by this and that the old CD-rom is probably fine. The only reason I'm writing is maybe next time someone is experiencing a cd-rom problem that, when all else fails, it might be suggested to have a tech check out the control chip before buying a new CD-ROM.

I sincerely appreciate all the help y'all have given me over the years and maybe this post will help some other frustrated CD-ROM victim!

Sorry I am a computer novice; but, I am running out of hard drive C space and I thought maybe I could put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive in order to free up drive C space.

If this is possible, can you refer me to some instructions on how to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Can you put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive to free up hard drive

To be honest a recovery drive won't give you much space (10 GB or so?). You are better off with a USB external HDD and move your less accessed data to the external.

I wonder what others will say.

My boss has a special network folder mapped only to his PC. He keeps a lot of xls and doc files that are for his eyes only. One of the xls files refuses to save, the error message states that the "file is currently in use". No one else has it open, or even has access to it's saved location.

He can still save a copy with "Save As.." but he can't even manually delete the original file afterwards.

When I build a system last year, I followed instructions on a website to move the Document folders (My Pictures, Videos, Downloads, etc.) in Win & to a different HDD (other than the SD where Win 7 was installed).

The first admin account that was created and used to make this change would not be impacted but all subsequent new accounts would have their document folders location changed. So once I created the main admin account I created a second account after making the change and used the second account from then onwards. This way all my saved documents were being physically installed on the larger capacity second HD.

Unfortunately I cant find that step by step instruction (I believe it had something to do with changing the registry??)

Anyone know where I can find that instruction again. Also, is there a better way out there to accomplish this now?

Had to replace a hard drive due to electronic failure, and the restore my dad did wasn't done quite right.

My old drive had two partitions. Only one of these was restored. I want to make a second partition before restoring down the second drive, so all the drive letter links are right...I'm not keen on having to reinstall all my software.

My dad says that the only way of really partitioning at this point is to reformat, which I don't really want to have to do.

He says there are programs like Partition Magic, but he's never been fully happy with them. Plus I don't want to have to pay for something I need only once.

Is there any free trial partition software out there that works well, or some other idea anyone has? There's plenty of space on the drive, I just need half of it to recognize a different drive letter.

Answer:Want to partition drive with information on it

I have a cracked copy of Partition Magic 8.0 & im too scared to actually use it! Only because I tried it once before on an older version & I lost everything!

Heard of PART?

I think thats free ... & it allows you to make up to 4 or 5 Primary partitions (you need xosl aswell ... probably free too). Maybe that might help you.

But if u want partition Magic (Full) I can post a link that will remain active on my friends website for 7 days & u can d/l it & try if u wanna.

Hi, 3 weeks ago I added an external hard drive, to which I transferred my My Documents folders as well as some other stuff. All worked fine, Windows was happy with the new MyDocs location etc. However yesterday I attached my camera briefly via USB and subsequent to this, Windows seems to have renamed my external harddrive to F: instead of E: and also changed my document folders to "Jamie's Documents/Picture/Music etc." instead of "My Documents"

I've managed to rename the doc folders but not the drive. I don't personally care what it calls itself, but some programs are having difficulty finding relevant files.

Any ideas whats happened and how to reverse it?

Answer:XP has renamed my hard drive and Document folders!

To change the drive letter, go into drive manager under computer manager in the control panel, right click on the drive and change drive letter and assign it E:.(Make sure nothing else is using that drive letter other wise you will not be able to see one of them).
My 5 external drives are assigned letters starting from the end of the alphabet. This way if I plug some thin else in it doesn't conflict.

I am installing some software on a laptop (Toshiba L300, Win XP pro, Dual core 2.0GHz, 2GB Ram)

I get an error message Invalid drive u: and the installation fails.

I followed an article in microsoft knowledge base to edit registry.

In shell folders there is an entry for personal which had u: in the data field.

The documents folder should be a network drive y: so I changed it to that.

The program installed but now when I try to open a document from the network documents folder it says I don't have permission.

How can I fix this?

I have been thinking about this problem.

I cloned the drive from an identical computer registered to jbloggs, then copied this clone to this laptop changed the computer name, user name and network documents folder to asmith.

Some of the registry settings and document ownership is still jbloggs.

Is there something else I should have changed somewhere?

Any help appreciated

Regards Melissa

My machine won't boot up unless I disconnect all of the Hard Drives. I still have my two SSD's (RAID 1) that have Windows 7 Professional installed still running fine.

I had one hard drive ST4000NM0023 (4TB) fail (had four of them), and so I replaced two of them with ST10000NM0096 (10TB) drives.

I had software backing up the failed drive, which was my D: (Documents & Program Files) drive. The backup drive F: (D Backup) has now been renamed my D: Drive, and I transferred all of it's files to a new F: backup drive.

I had to copy & paste everything from one folder over to another one of the same name because Windows 7 had automatically installed new folders with the proper icons on them (as per attached image). I had two of "My Pictures", "My Documents", etc.., with one having an icon and one not.

It seems like I had to move my files to the new folders or else my other programs couldn't seem to find the files they needed even though the the folders had the same name, minus the icon.

Copying files from folder to folder was very time consuming, and used all of the systems memory. I would successfully reboot the system after each successful transfer so I could restore the RAM back to 64GB.

I left the largest folder "My Documents" till last. After I successfully transferred the files in this folder over to the new "My Documents" folder with the icon on it, I tried rebooting the system and it would not work. I ... Read more

I have a worker that is not able to use windows search to find a specific text located in a file, the file is on a networked drive. They are able to get it to work on other computers just not that particular one. She has even set windows search to the correct folder the file is located on the network drive. So far I've reinstalled windows, made sure the index service was running and checked the sub folders and hidden files options in advanced search just in case, not sure what else to do, any suggestions?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help! I'm in the process of taking my ex employer to court and in the process to prove the dates that they have created certain documents I have asked them to provide me with copies of the "date and time stamps" or "property profile box" showing when they were created, I am aware that these can be tampered with so I'm not relying totally on the information.
Two of the profiles boxes they sent for two of the documents were dated exactly the same date and time and were obviously not the originals as they had been converted to pdf files. However on the 3rd document, which was supposed to be written by an individual it states the location as K:\cmm\program files\mailbox\Attach As an individual I have never saved a document to a K drive. Can someone tell me what a k drive would normally be used for and explain the location address for me please? who would create a document under the program files!!!!! Please help!!!

Answer:Employment Tribunal, K Drive & document properties!

Hi maddal1ne,

Just a guess here, going by the path name, that the file in questions was sent to someone as an email attachment and then fowarded to you. Assuming this, it is is a probable location for a mail program to save attachments.

It is unlikely that the drive letter has any significance.

I have a laptop with a crashed hard drive. I bought a USB to SATA/IDE Adapter to copy the documents from the hard drive so I can reinstall Windows. The repair option will not work. There is a user on the hard drive that was password protected, and I can't access those files. Is there any way I can gain access to those? The computer will not start so I can't get in to change the password.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Answer:Hard Drive Crashed - Document Recovery

Sometimes you can do a fresh install of Windows on a new HD, add the same user name and install the same password. Then add the second HD and try accessing the protected folder.

If windows just wont allow you to access the folder on the second drive but it wasn't password protected, booting a Linux Live CD such as Knoppix may be able to access the data.

I am running Windows 7 home premium, with school computers the same, and an Android Razr Maxx.

I have Google Drive and it seems to be sharing docs well....I see them at home, at my work, on the Android phone....however I have this continuing problem: at my work, I go to open a doc or mp3 or PP or whatever from GD. It shows up in Google docs right away....but the file - download function doesn't always work; that is, it often won't allow me to access the original document......sometimes it will just time out and i'll get the "IE was unable to load page" or whatever message that you see when you don't have an internet connection....that happens a lot actually.

Also, I have mp3's in there, and when I try to open them, no dice.

I want to be able to simply open any doc or PP or mp3 in its original form. Sometimes I can, usually I can't, so, big source of wasted time and frustration. To be clear: most of the time, I dump these files into GD from my home computer. Any help appreciated!

To be clear: my work is my classroom, where I have a laptop running Win 7.
